Rafsanjani, Iran leader whose life mirrored nation’s, dies

TEHRAN — Iran’s former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died Sunday after a decades-long career in the ruling elite, where his moderate views were not always welcome but his cunning guided him through revolution, war and the country’s turbulent politics.

‘La La Land’ wins big at Golden Globes, Meryl Streep gets political

BEVERLY HILLS - La La Land danced off with seven Golden Globes on Sunday on a night marked by upsets and a stinging indictment of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump by Hollywood favorite Meryl Streep. La La Land, a romantic musical about a struggling actress and a jazz pianist trying to make it in Hollywood, took home Globes for best comedy/musical and for its stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, as well as for director Damien Chazelle, screenplay, score and original song. But the evening’s most dramatic

moments came from 67-year-old Streep, the most respected actress of her generation, while accepting her lifetime achievement award. Although the three-time Oscar winner never mentioned Trump’s name, she said the most heartbreaking performance of the year came “when the person asking to sit in the

most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter.” “I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life,” Streep said. Streep wasn’t the only celebrity to get political at the Globes. Firsttime host Jimmy Fallon opened the three-hour ceremony by calling the awards show “one of the few places left where America still honors the popular vote” - a dig at Trump’s victory despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton. The political survivor’s life spanned the trials of Iran’s modern history, from serving as a close aide to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini during the 1979 Islamic Revolution to acting as a go-between in the Iran-Contra deal. He helped found Iran’s contested nuclear program, but later backed the accord with world powers to limit it in exchange for sanctions relief. Rafsanjani, who showed ruthlessness while in power but later pushed for reforms, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack, state media reported. He was 82. Iranian media said he was hospitalized north of Tehran earlier Sunday, where doctors performed CPR in vain for nearly an hour and a half before declaring him dead. A female state newscaster’s voice quivered as she read the news. Rafsanjani, “after a life full of restless efforts in the path of Islam and revolution, had departed for lofty heaven,” she said. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Rafsanjani an “old friend and comrade” and said his loss is “difficult and lifedecreasing.” The government an-

nounced three days of mourning, and a funeral was expected to be held on Tuesday. Rafsanjani served as president from 1989 to 1997, during a period of significant changes in Iran. At the time, the country was struggling to rebuild its economy after a devastating 1980s war with Iraq, while also cautiously allowing some wider freedoms, as seen in Iran’s highly regarded film and media industry. He also oversaw key developments in Iran’s nuclear program by negotiating deals with Russia to build an energy-producing reactor in Bushehr, which finally went into service in 2011 after long delays. Behind the scenes, he directed the secret purchase of technology and equipment from Pakistan and elsewhere.

BAHRAIN The foreign minister of the tiny island nation, which long has accused Iran of meddling in its internal affairs, simply said “God bless” Rafsanjani in a post on Twitter. A separate condolence from King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Iran said he was “praying to almighty God for his soul to rest in peace and inspire Iran’s president, its people and his family.”

IRANIAN EXILED OPPOSITION Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the political arm of the Iranian opposition group Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, said in a statement that she hoped the Islamic Republic would fall apart with Rafsanjani’s passing. “With the death of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of the two pillars and key to the equilibrium of the religious fascism ruling Iran has collapsed and the regime in its entirety is approaching overthrow,” she said.

KUWAIT Kuwait’s ruling emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, sent condolences over Rafsanjani, saying he “prayed to Allah the almighty to bestow blessings on the deceased.”

TURKEY Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu offered his condolences over Twitter, saying he was “deeply saddened” by Rafsanjani’s death.

LEBANON The secretary-general of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, called Rafsanjani “a great man” and a “protector and supporter” of modern political Shiism in the Middle East. He lamented Rafsanjani’s passing as a loss to the Muslim world. Hezbollah, which is also a leading political party in Lebanon.
