‘7th Heaven’ actor accused of child molestation Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Two cable television networks said Tuesday they would not broadcast scheduled re-runs of veteran TV actor Stephen Collins’ beloved family series “7th Heaven.”

The networks, UP TV and TV Guide, announced the cancellations after details of molestation allegations against Collins were reported by celebrity website TMZ. New York police confirmed Tuesday they have an open investigation into allegations the actor molested a teenage girl in the early 1970s.

New York Police Department spokesman Stephen David said the complaint was filed in 2012 accusing Collins of forcing a then-14-year-old girl to commit a lewd act in the actor’s Manhattan apartment in 1972. David says the case remains open and is being handled by Special Victims Division detectives, but no charges have been filed.

Prosecutors will make a determina-

tion about whether any charges should be pursued.

Collins’ lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, and talent agent, Mark Teitelbaum, did not return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

Hollywood trade publications reported Tuesday that Collins lost a role in the film “Ted 2” and resigned his position from the acting guild SAG-AFTRA. Pamela Greenwalt, a spokeswoman for SAG-AFTRA, declined comment on Collins’ departure from its national board. The actor’s name had been removed from lists of current board membership by Tuesday afternoon.

The actor’s estranged wife, Faye Grant, wrote in a sworn court declaration in Los Angeles last year that her

husband had disclosed he molested at least three young girls. Grant wrote in the November 2012 declaration in the couple’s divorce case that she reported abuse to Los Angeles police, who said they are not actively investigating the actor, but could not offer details on any previous investigations. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said it did not have records of a case being presented to prosecutors.

“Stephen admitted that he has engaged in a long-term pattern of sexually abusing minor children, including sexually molesting three young girls over a decade ago,” Grant wrote in the sworn declaration, which was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in November.

Grant and Collins separated in February 2012, roughly two weeks after the actress said she learned of her husband’s abuse in therapy sessions, according to her declaration. Collins filed for divorce three months after the separation.

NEW YORK - Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken publicly for the first time after naked pictures of her were hacked and posted online, angrily slamming the leak as a “sex crime.”

Speaking exclusively to Vanity Fair, the rising siren of the silver screen said she felt violated and was afraid how the

hacked photographs would affect her career.

“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this,” she told the November issue of the magazine, which will be available online Wednesday.

“It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of

world.”

Hackers dumped nude photos of more than a dozen Hollywood celebrities on social media last month after snatching them from Apple’s iCloud in what the tech giant called a “targeted attack.”

“It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime,” the 24-year-old actress told Vanity Fair.

“It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these websites are responsible.

“Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside.”

She told Vanity Fair she had sent the photographs to her then boyfriend while they were in a long distance relationship. She was initially tempted to write a statement, but said: “Every single thing that I tried to write made me cry or get angry.

“I started to write an apology, but I don’t have anything to say I’m sorry for. I was in a loving, healthy, great relationship for four years. It was long distance, and either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he’s going to look at you.”

“Freight delivery in August 2014 reached 1,518,031 kg. This figure is down 10.13 percent compared to the condition of freight delivery in the previous month which reached 1,689,114 kg,” said the Head of BPS Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar.

According to him, the main destination country of the freight

delivery was Australia with the amount of 454,202 kg or an increase of 7.38 percent compared to the previous month reaching 423,001 kg. The largest increase in the freight delivery was to China as much as 49.95 percent compared to the previous month, namely from 6,437 kg to 9,652 kg.

“Delivery to China showed an

increase, not only in terms of the freight alone. However, as a whole it has increased in comparison to the condition in the previous month,” he said.

He explained that freight delivery by sea port at Benoa Harbor Denpasar showed an increase in August 2014 by 0.16 percent compared to the previous month, namely from 58,842 tons to 58,939 tons. Meanwhile, the shipment from other than Benoa Harbor Denpasar also increased 1.60 percent, namely from 97,411 tons to 98,974 tons.

“The number of baggage and

domestic air freight from the Ngurah Rai airport in August 2014 amounted to 4,517,775 kg for baggage, or an increase of 41.19 percent from the previous month reaching 3,199,825 kg, while the freight amounted to 145,211 kg or a decrease of 32.29 percent compared to the previous month, reaching 214,464 kg,” he said.

Further, he explained that in terms of flight departure, the baggage and freight delivered to the main destination showed an increase and decrease. Delivery of baggage to the five main flight destinations increased respectively

“Meanwhile, the freight delivery to the five main destinations, only the delivery to Lombok Praya showed an increase compared to the previous month namely reaching 102.07 percent, while the other destinations decreased respectively to Jakarta/Soekarno Hatta 44.33 percent, Surabaya (36.40 percent), Bandung (27.99 percent) and Yogyakarta (49.64 percent),” he said. Drug users proliferate to Jungut Batu Bali Post

SEMARAPURA - Klungkung Police Narcotics Unit arrested another drug (crystal meth) users with the suspect I Made Yudiana aka Dek Udi, 32, Monday (Oct 6). The resident having profession as security guard was arrested at his home at Kangin hamlet, Jungut Batu village, Nusa Penida subdistrict, around 5:30 p.m.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Tobacco use linked to HPV, oral cancers Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - Cigarettes and other tobacco products increase the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted virus linked to mouth and throat cancer, according to a study released Tuesday.

Oral human papillomavirus type 16, or HPV16, is found in 80 percent of throat cancers and is transmitted by oral sex. Tumors related to the virus have increased by 225 percent in the United States in the past two decades.

“The practice of oral sex is common, but this cancer is rare,” said Gypsyamber D’Souza, epidemiology professor at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“There must be cofactors in the process that explain why some people develop persistent HPV16 infections and HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers when most other people don’t.”

Researchers found that HPV16 infections are more common among people who smoke or use tobacco products, regardless of their sexual practices, though nonsmokers are also at risk, according to the study in the Journal of the

American Medical Association.

“It appears that tobacco exposure increases the likelihood of having oral HPV16 infection, and although we do not yet know why, we suspect that the virus may not be cleared from the body as easily in people who use tobacco,” D’Souza said.

The study examined data from 6,887 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the United

States.

Among the group, 2,012 participants smoked or used tobacco products at the time of the study.

Researchers detected the virus in participants by administering a mouth wash that collected mouth and throat cells.

Participants’ blood and urine samples were tested for chemicals related to tobacco usage, namely cotinine and NNAL, a tobacco­r elated carcinogenic metabolite.

Subjects with elevated levels of tobacco-related chemicals in their blood or urine had a higher risk of having HPV16 DNA, while those without detectable traces of the

Their apparent effect is quite small. But variations in such genes may modify coffee’s effect on a person’s health, and so genetic research may help scientists explore that, said Marilyn Cornelis of the Harvard School of Public Health.

She led the research.

The project analyzed the results of about two dozen previous studies with a combined total of more than 120,000 participants. Those participants had described how much coffee they drink a day, and allowed their DNA to be scanned.

The new work looked for minute differences in their DNA that were associated with drinking more or less coffee.

Researchers found eight such variants, two of which had already been linked to coffee consumption.

The report, authored by 30 experts, was released at a conference in Pyeongchang of the CBD, an offshoot of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. The 102-page document, based on a review of hundreds of published studies, said the ocean’s pH level was falling -- a benchmark of rising acidity -- and the consequences would be enduring.

The instruction to the local people to not fly kites is aimed to avoid any form of aerial disruption due to a previous incident when the string of a flying kite got stuck in a military helicopter while it was patrolling during APEC 2013.

“We have coordinated and cooperated with the territorial officers to restrict kite flying in the airspace of Nusa Dua area,” Sugiharto remarked.

Four of the six new variants implicate genes that are involved with caffeine, either in how the body breaks it down or in its stimulating effects, the researchers said in a paper released Tuesday by the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

The two other newly implicated genes were a surprise because there’s no clear biological link to coffee or caffeine, Cornelis said.

They are instead involved with cholesterol levels and blood sugar.

Marian Neuhouser, a nutrition researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and study co-author, said identifying genes related to consumption may one day help doctors identify patients who need extra help in cutting down on coffee if recommended. For example, pregnant women are advised to consume only moderate amounts of caffeine because of risk of miscarriage and preterm birth, she said.

None of the identified genetic variants was related to how intensely a person tastes coffee, and Cornelis said that surprised her.

She doesn’t drink coffee, she said, because she can’t stand the stuff.

The scientists pointed to a mysterious mass extinction from natural causes called the Paleo-Eocene Thermal Maximum, which occurred around 56 million years ago.

The fossil record suggests it took around 100,000 years for calcifying organisms to recover from the acidification shock.

The experts sounded a special warning for tropical coral reefs, whose health is already affected by warmer seas.

The risks “are of great concern,

since the livelihoods of around 400 million people depend on such habitats,” they said.

The report said ocean acidification was as complex as it was important, yet there were many knowledge gaps.

It pointed to likely changes in the ecosystem as some species benefitted from the change while others were hit, and shifts in the ocean’s chemistry that, in turn, may even add to warming above the surface.

An Australian climber gets slipped on Mt. Agung

It’s not clear how effective quarantine would be, since infected dogs don’t show symptoms and it’s not known how long the virus can last in them, or how long tests would have to be done to check for it.

Dr. Peter Cowen, a veterinarian at North Carolina State University who has advised global health experts on animal infection disease risks, says killing the dog is “clearly an overreaction.”

“I think it’s very unfortunate they are thinking of euthanizing that dog. They should really study it instead,” he said. “Ebola has never been documented to be spread by a dog,” and that’s clearly not a major route of spread in the outbreak in Africa, he said.

Consumer borrowing up $13.5 billion in August Associated Press

WASHINGTON — U.S. consumers increased their borrowing in August in the category that covers auto loans and student loans but cut back on their credit card borrowing. ment rate down to a six-year low of 5.9 percent last month.

The August increase in total borrowing put it 6.8 percent above a year ago. Auto and student loans are up 8.2 percent from a year ago while credit card debt has risen a smaller 3.2 percent.

The large increase in student debt has raised concerns that young Americans are being saddled with student loans that will keep them from buying homes or spending as previous generations have after college.

Student loans have soared since the recession ended, topping $1.1 trillion in the second quarter of this year. That’s up from $700 billion in 2009.

The New York Federal Reserve reported that demand for auto loans reached the highest level in eight years this spring with more people with checkered credit histories obtaining the loans.

That has raised worries about the potential for defaults down the road.

The Federal Reserve’s monthly credit report does not cover mortgages or any other loans that are backed by real estate.

German economic outlook dims as industry slides Associated Press

BERLIN — Concerns are growing that Germany’s economy may not rebound as expected in the third quarter, weighing on the already-fragile eurozone, after data Tuesday showed the biggest monthly drop in industrial production in five years. The 4 percent drop in industrial output in August was far bigger than the 1.5 percent decline expected in markets and the sharpest slide since early 2009. It follows a string of other weak data — a 5.7 percent monthly decline in factory orders in August, led by falling demand for Germany’s exports, as well as a drop in business confidence indicators since the spring.

The data has analysts saying that Europe’s largest economy might not recover from a weak second quarter as hoped — an outcome that bodes ill for the broader 18-country eurozone.

Germany, which relies heavily on its industrial sector and high-value exports, is suffering from weak demand for its goods from the rest of Europe and China, where growth is also slowing.

It is also getting hit by fears over the potential economic impact of the sanctions on Russia triggered by the crisis in Ukraine.

SAO PAULO - The International Monetary Fund slashed its 2014 economic growth forecast for Brazil by a full percentage point Tuesday, to 0.3 percent, blaming weak investment and a consumer funk.

Brazil, Latin America’s biggest economy and the world’s seventh-largest, entered recession in the first half of the year, a painful reversal of the rapid growth it posted in the 2000s.

“Weak competitiveness, low business confidence, and tighter financial conditions (with interest rate hikes through April 2014) have constrained investment, and the ongoing moderation in employment and credit growth has been weighing on consumption,” the IMF said.

Inflation has also reached the government target maximum of 6.3 percent, as reported by the IMF and the Central Bank of Brazil.

The IMF said the situation was being exacerbated by political uncertainty created ahead of a presidential run-off poll on October 26 between leftist incumbent Dilma Rousseff, who topped Sunday’s first-round vote, and business favorite Aecio Neves.

“A moderate pick-up in activity is expected for 2015, with growth rising to 1.4 percent as the political uncertainty surrounding this year’s presidential election dissipates,” it said.

Between the BRICS countries (Brazil,

Russia, India, China, and South Africa), only Russia, with 0.2 percent, is currently performing worse than the Latin American giant.

After the Kertagosa has been left porous for long time, the Klungkung government finally took proactive measure to restore the existence. Due to limited budget, local government could not perform overall restoration to Kertagosa because the restoration approximately needed tens of billions of budgets.

Meanwhile, this year the local government could only allocate the budget worth IDR 704 million for the restoration of the roof.

The Head of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Sujana, previously recognized that quite a lot of protests were revealed by travelers after the Kertagosa was dismantled. However, he asserted, the roof repair was the most urgently needed at this time amid the budget constraints owned by local government. Captain apologizes for leaving doomed Korean ferry

SEOUL — The captain of a doomed South Korean ferry on Wednesday apologized for abandoning passengers but said he didn’t know his actions would lead to the deaths of more than 300 people, news reports said.

Capt. Lee Joon-seok and three other crew members from the ferry Sewol were indicted on homicide charges alleging they were negligent and failed to protect passengers when the ferry sank in April.

Eleven other crew members were indicted on less serious charges.

The 15 crew on trial were among the first group of people to leave

when the ship began badly listing.

Lee told the trial at the Gwangju District Court in southern South Korea that he will continue to pray for the souls of the dead people until he dies, according to South Korean media including Yonhap news agency.

“I committed a grave sin. I’m sorry,” Lee was quoted as saying.

But 68-year-old Lee said he had no intention of killing any of his passengers. “I know I cannot get out of prison, but I must not let my children and grandchildren live being called family members of a murder,” he was quoted as saying.

Court officials couldn’t immediately confirm Lee’s comments but said the court is expected to issue

its ruling on him and the 14 other crew members next month.

Asked by prosecutors in court whether he issued an evacuation order to passengers, Lee said he definitely did so, according to Yonhap.

Many survivors have said they were repeatedly ordered by loudspeaker to stay on the sinking ship and they didn’t remember any evacuation order being given before they helped each other flee the vessel.

About six months after the sinking, 294 bodies have been recovered but 10 others are still missing.

Most of the dead were high school students who were travelling to a resort island for a school trip.

“We have a very serious situation at hand right now,” said Shantmanu, an Indian administrator in the area who uses one name. He said there was panic among people living close to the border. Tens of thousands have fled homes on both sides since the violence erupted Sunday night. In total, nine civilians on the Pakistani side and seven on the Indian have been killed in the last three nights of fighting, officials said.

“We fail to understand why the Indians are targeting Pakistani civilian populations,” said Maj. Gen. Khan Javed Khan of the Pakistani paramilitary border force. Indian officials have made similar comments, accusing the Pakistanis of focusing on civilian settlements.

Since Sunday night, the violence has spread to more points along the 200-kilometer (125-mile) border between Pakistan’s Punjab province and the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir. That lower-altitude border, guarded by paramilitary border forces, is lined on both sides by ancient villages and agricultural fields.

Pakistan also controls a part of Kashmir farther north, marked by a U.N.-monitored Line of Control where there were also exchanges of fire overnight. With the skirmishes spreading, Indian authorities moved to government shelters another 5,000 people Tuesday night in the worsthit Samba sector, said Indian police officer K. Rajendra. Pakistan’s Khan said 12,000 villagers had been

evacuated since Monday.

“It’s the most serious violation of the 2003 cease-fire,” Rajendra said.

That agreement was brokered between India and Pakistan after several years of almost-day border battles.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Kashmir since they won independence from Britain in 1947.

Still, some Indian officials downplayed the seriousness of the latest flare-up. “I don’t know whether this can be called a war-like situation. The firing is going on, and we are giving a strong reply,” said D. K. Pathak, the director-general of India’s Border Security Force.

The U.N. Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan plans to visit the area, the Pakistani military said Tuesday after lodging a protest with the group alleging that Indian troops had fired first.

“We call upon the Indian government to immediately cease fire and shelling and help us preserve tranquility,” said a statement from Sartaj Aziz, the national security adviser to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

India has accused Pakistan of starting this week’s skirmishes, saying it wants to create a distraction to help separatist militants infiltrate into Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Pakistan has repeatedly denied this.

Several insurgent groups have been fighting since 1989 for Kashmir’s independence from India or its merger with Pakistan.

Anti-graft commission questions Deputy Tourism Minister over Wacik’s case

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned Deputy Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar as witness for former energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik who was named suspect in an extortion case.

“I am here not as a witness but as a discussion partner to the KPK investigators,” remarked Sapta, who admitted that he was questioned about the standard operational

money given to the ministers.

On September 3, the KPK had named Jero Wacik, the former energy and mineral resources minister and a senior politician from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democrat party, as suspect in an extortion case where he allegedly amassed a total of Rp9.9 billion during his ministerial term in 20112012.

According to the anti-graft body’s investigation, Jero is believed to have ordered his staff to generate additional funds for

the minister’s operational costs.

Jero’s staff then carried out fictitious activities, which were funded by sponsors from private parties.

Jero allegedly extorted money from various parties as he was of the viewpoint that the operational budget set aside for the energy and mineral resources minister for the 2011-2013 period was lesser than the amount allocated during the 2004-2001 period when he held the post of minister of tourism and creative energy.

Aman Abdurrahman, an influential Islamist cleric, is Indonesia’s main translator for IS and has been able to disseminate information online from inside a maximum-security prison, including the group’s recent call on Muslims to kill Westerners indiscriminately.

Their oaths were followed by a wave of IS pledges by large radical groups, as well as by 23 inmates imprisoned with Bashir, according to Jakarta-based think-tank, the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC).

The government’s deradicalisation schemes remain so ad-hoc and poorly targeted that they barely make up a

programme at all, critics say.

Irfan Idrus, head of deradicalisation at the national counterterrorism agency, admitted there was no system in place to identify those who have developed extremist views and need post-release monitoring.

When Haris Amir Falah was freed after serving three years for terrorism offences, he went straight back to his Bashir-led extremist group.

Falah was convicted of funding a militant training camp that was planning gun attacks on “enemies of Islam”, including the president.

Before that he had fought with JI in parts of Indonesia during bouts of religious conflict, a source with knowledge of his case told AFP. Falah claims he went to give aid.

Just three deradicalisation sessions were held during his time in prison, involving dialogue with moderate Islamic clerics. “It was interesting enough, but it didn’t change anything about the way I think,” he said.

Falah is now a senior figure of another offshoot group, and says that while IS is “too extreme” he supports jihad in Syria and backs the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front.

“There have not been useful programmes on a national scale inside the prisons that you can point to clear impact,” said IPAC director Sidney Jones, adding that Indonesia’s deradicalisation drive was “vague” and a “bit of a mess”.

She pointed to a programme to educate convicted terrorists about the “Pancasila” -- Indonesia’s fivepoint state ideology that celebrates “unity in diversity” -- to inculcate a sense of nationalism in them.

JAKARTA - The looming release of hundreds of militants from Indonesia’s prisons, hotbeds of radicalism where influential Islamists openly preach extremist ideology, is ringing alarm bells and raising fears some will join forces with the Islamic State group.

More than a decade after Indonesia vowed to dismantle terrorist networks to stem a series of attacks, neglect of jails has allowed top detainees to promote their views behind bars, and even beyond thanks to smartphones and laptops.

About 200 convicted militants are due for release in the next two years, and experts say inadequate deradicalisation efforts mean many will leave jail with their ideology intact.

“Prisons are still the epicentre of terrorism in Indonesia. The most dangerous militants are behind bars and recruitment is going on,” said terrorism expert Taufik Andrie from the Jakarta-based Institute for International Peace Building.

The alarming trend in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country comes despite authorities’ growing concern about Islamic militancy and in particular Islamic State (IS), which has declared an “Islamic caliphate” across swathes of Syria and Iraq.

Authorities say about 60 Indonesians are believed to have joined IS, although most analysts believe the true figure is up to 200, and concerns are mounting that they could return and revive sophisticated militant networks.

On October 20, the MPR speaker is scheduled to inaugurate new Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Vice President M Jusuf Kalla. “Let’s make the inauguration a success, for the sake of the nation and NKRI,” he stated.

The Red and White Coalition (KMP) led by former general Prabowo Subianto, was victorious again in the election for the MPR leaders, after a sweeping victory in earlier election for the parliamentary leaders.

The process of election from Tuesday night until early in the morning on Wednesday ended with the winning coalition was favored with 347 votes against the Great Indonesia Coalition supporting president elect Joko Widodo that garnered 330 votes.

Osman Sapta, the only candidate from DPD in the election, was named candidate for speaker by the defeated coalition, but he was also named one of the deputy speakers of the winning coalition.

MPR, which is one of the country’s highest institutions, is made up of the whole members of the Parliament and DPD with the authority to amend and make the Constitution.

Formula 1’s top teams rejected a move by the FIA last year to introduce closed cockpits because they felt the structures would make cars look ‘shockingly’ ugly.

While Jules Bianchi’s accident at the Japanese Grand Prix has served to re-open the debate about drivers having better head protection, it has emerged that FIA efforts on improving safety in this area were put on the backburner nearly 12 months ago.

After work on closed cockpits by the FIA ramped up during 2012, the governing body came up with the idea of a roll structure solution in front of the driver.

However, AUTOSPORT has learned that last October, during a meeting of F1’s Strategy Group, the FIA made clear that if it was to

continue expensive work on making closed cockpits a reality then it needed the support of teams.

According to the minutes of the meeting that was distributed afterwards, leading F1 figures involved in the discussion - including Bernie Ecclestone, Red Bull boss Christian Horner, then McLaren chief Martin Whitmarsh and then Mercedes boss Ross Brawn were all against it.

While accepting there were safety benefits from having an extra roll structure around the driver, they all agreed that the looks were not fitting for F1.

Horner was quoted as saying the cars looked ‘shockingly bad’ while Whitmarsh said they were ‘shockingly ugly’.

The teams agreed that F1 was about open-cockpit racing and the roll

hoop solution - which Whiting said was the only closed cockpit concept that the FIA believed could work was not an avenue that they wanted grand prix racing to go down.

The minutes of the meeting noted: “It was agreed that the project should be discontinued.” While a roll cage solution is beneficial in certain situations - especially in deflecting objects heading towards the driver - it is unclear how much of a help it would have been in the kind of impact that Bianchi suffered.

Bianchi’s car speared off the track and ran head first underneath the overhang at the rear of a heavy recovery vehicle.

The French driver’s family issued a statement from Japan on Tuesday revealing that he had suffered a diffuse axonal injury.

Lopez played in only 17 games last season and was the Nets’ leading scorer before breaking his right foot in December. He had surgery to repair that injury and later another procedure on his left ankle. He shot 8 of 12 Tuesday while playing into the fourth quarter.

“It was great to be back on the floor,” Lopez said. “I felt so giddy when we first got on the floor, standing on the court, getting shots up.

To be back out with the guys was a fantastic feeling.” Williams made it through last season but struggled with ankle problems for a second straight campaign. He had surgery on both ankles during the offseason.

“They are an integral part of our team and having them both back and both healthy and playing at the highest level, that’s the key for us to succeed,” forward Andrei Kirilenko said.

Joe Johnson scored 14 points, and Kirilenko and Mirza Teletovic each added 13 for the Nets. Kevin Garnett started his 20th NBA season with six points and five rebounds.

SHANGHAI - Rafa Nadal will play in this week’s Shanghai Masters despite being diagnosed with appendicitis which will require a surgery, the world number two said on Tuesday.

The Spaniard went to hospital on Sunday after complaining of stomach pains and was given antibiotics which seem to have worked as the 28-year-old, after two days of resting in his hotel room, had a 45-minute practice at the Qizhong Tennis Center.

“I was in the hospital on Sunday,” said Nadal who begins his Shanghai campaign against compatriot Feliciano Lopez on Wednesday.

“Yesterday the nurse came to my room to give me the treatment again. Today I was at the hospital in the morning again. I had again the antibiotics. It seems like everything is under control now.

“I’m not going to go for surgery.

That’s great news for me today.

That’s why I’m here practising for 45 minutes and trying to play tomorrow. But obviously I am not in my best condition.

“The positive thing is I am feeling better today than yesterday. Yesterday I felt a little bit better than the day before. I hope tomorrow I will feel better than today.” Nadal said he would consult his doctors back in Mallorca before deciding when to remove his appendix.

“I have to talk with my doctors when I get back home. It is true that the doctor here told me that (eventually) I have to take it out.

STOCKHOLM - With captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely to miss Sweden’s crucial Euro 2016 home qualifier against Russia through injury on Thursday, the battle to replace him offers a gloomy outlook for the future of Erik Hamren’s side.

Sweden’s record goalscorer is struggling with a tendon injury in his heel that has sidelined him for Paris St Germain. Unlike his club side, however, the Scandinavians do not possess an Edinson Cavani to shoulder the burden of his absence.

Even worse, it is an early sign of what is to come if the 33-year-old Ibrahimovic does retire after the Euro 2016 finals in France, leaving an enormous pair of international boots to fill.

Les Ferdinand appointed head of football at QPR Reuters

LONDON - Former Queens Park Rangers striker Les Ferdinand has been appointed the club’s head of football operations, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

Ferdinand, who played for a number of English Premier League sides including QPR and coached at Tottenham Hotspur under current Rangers manager Harry Redknapp, will be in charge of overseeing the footballing structure.

“Football has changed considerably in recent years, and I firmly believe there is a role at every football club for this kind of position,” QPR Chairman Tony Fernandes told the club website (www.qpr.co.uk).

Ferdinand, who won 17 England

caps, told the website: “The club holds a special place in my heart.

Everyone knows what it means to me, so when the opportunity to return here in this role came up, I jumped at the opportunity.”

Redknapp, whose contract at the Premier League’s bottom club

UEFA bans FIGC president for 6 months for racism Associated Press

NYON, Switzerland — UEFA banned Italian football federation president Carlo Tavecchio for six months on Tuesday following a racist comment during his election campaign. Tavecchio, a long-standing executive in Italian football, was elected president in August despite causing a stir over a reference to bananas when discussing the presence of foreign players in Italy.

“Mr. Tavecchio will be ineligible for any position as a UEFA official for a period of six months starting from the communication of this decision,” UEFA said in a statement. “Mr. Tavecchio will not participate in the next UEFA Congress scheduled for 24 March 2015.”

UEFA also said Tavecchio will

have to “organize a special event in Italy aimed at increasing awareness ... against racism.”

Tavecchio, who has a UEFA role as a member of its youth and amateur football committee, will continue as head of the FIGC. The FIGC announced it will not appeal.

Using a hypothetical name, Tavecchio had said: “In England they select players based on professionalism, whereas we say that ‘Opti Poba’ is here, he was eating bananas before and now he’s starting for Lazio and that’s OK.” The Italian federation’s internal prosecutor dropped his inquiry over the comment but UEFA, following an investigation, opened disciplinary proceedings against Tavecchio on Sept.

BARCELONA - Barcelona would not be allowed to play in La Liga if Catalonia broke away from Spain, the country’s football league chief Javier Tebas said as tensions mounted in the region over the possibility of an independence referendum next month. Politics have been interwoven with the football club almost since it was formed and is summed up by the team’s motto: ‘more than a club’.

Barca’s role in pushing the Catalan nationalist cause varies depending on the board in power, but it always plays a central role in cultural life. The present board, first under president Sandro Rosell and now Josep Maria Bartomeu, have taken a back-seat role in the heated debate currently taking place in the region about whether to hold an independence referendum on Nov. 9.

Catalan independence would clearly impact on the future of Barca, who, along with Real Madrid, are the major powerhouses of the Spanish game with support throughout the country.

In the event that Barca did leave La Liga then it would severely weaken the image of the competition at home and abroad.

Similarly it would be hard to imagine Barca and local rivals Espanyol competing in a Catalan league, which would have many semi-professional teams.

“If Catalonia became independent, taking into consideration the Sports Law that would be enforced by the rest of Spain, Barcelona wouldn’t be allowed to play,” Tebas, the president of the LFP, told a sports conference in Barcelona. “There would have to be a change in the law made in the Spanish Parliament. “Clearly if it happened then it would be detrimental for Spanish football to lose Barca who are an historic club.

“I can’t imagine the LFP without Barca. In the same way as I can’t imagine Catalonia without Spain, I can’t see La Liga without Barca. Also if it did happen what would you call the league: the Spanish League or the Iberian League?” Barca supporters aligned with former-president Joan Laporta are calling on the club to be more vocal in support of the referendum.

Laporta, who was president from 2003 to 2010, wanted the club to be at the forefront of Catalan nationalist politics, which angered many fans, particularly those from other parts of Spain who felt alienated. The present

board though are less committal.

“It is a sensitive subject and the club won’t get involved but the president is considering making a statement in the coming days,” said a Barca spokesman.

Xavi and Gerard Pique, however, are among the Barca players who have come out in support of a referendum, following a September rally in Barcelona in favour of the vote, attended by 1.8 million people according to the police. “We have all the right in the world to vote. We need to vote, we need the people to show their opinions and I am in favour of the referendum obviously,” Xavi told a news conference.

Both he and Pique were or currently are Spain internationals and the latter says that he still gives his all when playing for La Roja. “I am Catalan and I wanted to take part in the rally. I went with friends to have a good time with the other 1.8 million that were there,” Pique told a news conference.

“There is no need to doubt me. I have played for the national team for 11 years and it is something different to be in favour of a referendum which is democratic.

People should have the right to vote and this has nothing to do with the other.”

Flooding forces Montpellier anniversary cancellation Reuters

STOCKHOLM - With captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely to miss Sweden’s crucial Euro 2016 home qualifier against Russia through injury on Thursday, the battle to replace him offers a gloomy outlook for the future of Erik Hamren’s side.

Sweden’s record goalscorer is struggling with a tendon injury in his heel that has sidelined him for Paris St Germain. Unlike his club side, however, the Scandinavians do not possess an Edinson Cavani to shoulder the burden of his absence.

Even worse, it is an early sign of what is to come if the 33-year-old Ibrahimovic does retire after the Euro 2016 finals in France, leaving an enormous pair of international boots to fill.

Against Russia, coach Hamren will most likely turn to Johan Elmander, a striker who failed to sparkle during two spells in England’s Premier League and is now plying his trade at Brondby in Denmark.

Another option is Ola Toivonen, who also plays in France, but any similarities with Ibrahimovic end there.

He and Elmander both possess a tremendous work ethic, but lack the flashes of genius that Ibrahimovic has made his trademark, especially at the Friends Arena.

Surprisingly, Hamren resisted the temptation to call up Manchester City striker John Guidetti, who has got off to a flying start at Celtic since moving to the Scottish club on loan. Guidetti will instead join up with Sweden’s Under-21 side.

Often credited by Ibrahimovic for turning him into a goal-scoring machine when they worked together at Juventus, Russia coach Fabio Capello arrives in Sweden knowing that, in the absence of his protege, the biggest threat they face might come from the poor pitch at the Friends Arena.

F1 teams rejected “ugly” closed cockpit solution in 2013

Formula 1’s top teams rejected a move by the FIA last year to introduce closed cockpits because they felt the structures would make cars look ‘shockingly’ ugly.

While Jules Bianchi’s accident at the Japanese Grand Prix has served to re-open the debate about drivers having better head protection, it has emerged that FIA efforts on improving safety in this area were put on the backburner nearly 12 months ago.

After work on closed cockpits by the FIA ramped up during 2012, the governing body came up with the idea of a roll structure solution in front of the driver.

However, AUTOSPORT has learned that last October, during a meeting of F1’s Strategy Group, the FIA made clear that if it was to

continue expensive work on making closed cockpits a reality then it needed the support of teams.

According to the minutes of the meeting that was distributed afterwards, leading F1 figures involved in the discussion - including Bernie Ecclestone, Red Bull boss Christian Horner, then McLaren chief Martin Whitmarsh and then Mercedes boss Ross Brawn were all against it.

While accepting there were safety benefits from having an extra roll structure around the driver, they all agreed that the looks were not fitting for F1.

Horner was quoted as saying the cars looked ‘shockingly bad’ while Whitmarsh said they were ‘shockingly ugly’.

The teams agreed that F1 was about open-cockpit racing and the roll

hoop solution - which Whiting said was the only closed cockpit concept that the FIA believed could work was not an avenue that they wanted grand prix racing to go down.

The minutes of the meeting noted: “It was agreed that the project should be discontinued.” While a roll cage solution is beneficial in certain situations - especially in deflecting objects heading towards the driver - it is unclear how much of a help it would have been in the kind of impact that Bianchi suffered.

Bianchi’s car speared off the track and ran head first underneath the overhang at the rear of a heavy recovery vehicle.

The French driver’s family issued a statement from Japan on Tuesday revealing that he had suffered a diffuse axonal injury.

Lopez played in only 17 games last season and was the Nets’ leading scorer before breaking his right foot in December. He had surgery to repair that injury and later another procedure on his left ankle. He shot 8 of 12 Tuesday while playing into the fourth quarter.

“It was great to be back on the floor,” Lopez said. “I felt so giddy when we first got on the floor, standing on the court, getting shots up.

To be back out with the guys was a fantastic feeling.” Williams made it through last season but struggled with ankle problems for a second straight campaign. He had surgery on both ankles during the offseason.

“They are an integral part of our team and having them both back and both healthy and playing at the highest level, that’s the key for us to succeed,” forward Andrei Kirilenko said.

Joe Johnson scored 14 points, and Kirilenko and Mirza Teletovic each added 13 for the Nets. Kevin Garnett started his 20th NBA season with six points and five rebounds.

Jeremy Pargo finished with 27 points, seven assists, six rebounds and a thunderous dunk in the final minutes for Maccabi, the Euroleague champions who had plenty of crowd support in Barclays Center, with Israeli flags all around the arena.

Nadal to play in Shanghai despite appendicitis

SHANGHAI - Rafa Nadal will play in this week’s Shanghai Masters despite being diagnosed with appendicitis which will require a surgery, the world number two said on Tuesday.

The Spaniard went to hospital on Sunday after complaining of stomach pains and was given antibiotics which seem to have worked as the 28-year-old, after two days of resting in his hotel room, had a 45-minute practice at the Qizhong Tennis Center.

“I was in the hospital on Sunday,” said Nadal who begins his Shanghai campaign against compatriot Feliciano Lopez on Wednesday.

“Yesterday the nurse came to my room to give me the treatment again. Today I was at the hospital in the morning again. I had again the antibiotics. It seems like everything is under control now.

“I’m not going to go for surgery.

That’s great news for me today.

That’s why I’m here practising for 45 minutes and trying to play tomorrow. But obviously I am not in my best condition.

“The positive thing is I am feeling better today than yesterday. Yesterday I felt a little bit better than the day before. I hope tomorrow I will feel better than today.” Nadal said he would consult his doctors back in Mallorca before deciding when to remove his appendix.

“I have to talk with my doctors when I get back home. It is true that the doctor here told me that (eventually) I have to take it out.

Because when you have it once, the normal thing is that it is going to come back. Sooner or later I have to take it out.”

Captain apologizes for leaving doomed Korean ferry

SEOUL — The captain of a doomed South Korean ferry on Wednesday apologized for abandoning passengers but said he didn’t know his actions would lead to the deaths of more than 300 people, news reports said.

Capt. Lee Joon-seok and three other crew members from the ferry Sewol were indicted on homicide charges alleging they were negligent and failed to protect passengers when the ferry sank in April.

Eleven other crew members were indicted on less serious charges.

The 15 crew on trial were among the first group of people to leave

when the ship began badly listing.

Lee told the trial at the Gwangju District Court in southern South Korea that he will continue to pray for the souls of the dead people until he dies, according to South Korean media including Yonhap news agency.

“I committed a grave sin. I’m sorry,” Lee was quoted as saying.

But 68-year-old Lee said he had no intention of killing any of his passengers. “I know I cannot get out of prison, but I must not let my children and grandchildren live being called family members of a murder,” he was quoted as saying.

Court officials couldn’t immediately confirm Lee’s comments but said the court is expected to issue

its ruling on him and the 14 other crew members next month.

Asked by prosecutors in court whether he issued an evacuation order to passengers, Lee said he definitely did so, according to Yonhap.

Many survivors have said they were repeatedly ordered by loudspeaker to stay on the sinking ship and they didn’t remember any evacuation order being given before they helped each other flee the vessel.

About six months after the sinking, 294 bodies have been recovered but 10 others are still missing.

Most of the dead were high school students who were travelling to a resort island for a school trip.

“We have a very serious situation at hand right now,” said Shantmanu, an Indian administrator in the area who uses one name. He said there was panic among people living close to the border. Tens of thousands have fled homes on both sides since the violence erupted Sunday night. In total, nine civilians on the Pakistani side and seven on the Indian have been killed in the last three nights of fighting, officials said.

“We fail to understand why the Indians are targeting Pakistani civilian populations,” said Maj. Gen. Khan Javed Khan of the Pakistani paramilitary border force. Indian officials have made similar comments, accusing the Pakistanis of focusing on civilian settlements.

Since Sunday night, the violence has spread to more points along the 200-kilometer (125-mile) border between Pakistan’s Punjab province and the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir. That lower-altitude border, guarded by paramilitary border forces, is lined on both sides by ancient villages and agricultural fields.

Pakistan also controls a part of Kashmir farther north, marked by a U.N.-monitored Line of Control where there were also exchanges of fire overnight. With the skirmishes spreading, Indian authorities moved to government shelters another 5,000 people Tuesday night in the worsthit Samba sector, said Indian police officer K. Rajendra. Pakistan’s Khan said 12,000 villagers had been

evacuated since Monday.

“It’s the most serious violation of the 2003 cease-fire,” Rajendra said.

That agreement was brokered between India and Pakistan after several years of almost-day border battles.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Kashmir since they won independence from Britain in 1947.

Still, some Indian officials downplayed the seriousness of the latest flare-up. “I don’t know whether this can be called a war-like situation. The firing is going on, and we are giving a strong reply,” said D. K. Pathak, the director-general of India’s Border Security Force.

The U.N. Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan plans to visit the area, the Pakistani military said Tuesday after lodging a protest with the group alleging that Indian troops had fired first.

“We call upon the Indian government to immediately cease fire and shelling and help us preserve tranquility,” said a statement from Sartaj Aziz, the national security adviser to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

India has accused Pakistan of starting this week’s skirmishes, saying it wants to create a distraction to help separatist militants infiltrate into Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Pakistan has repeatedly denied this.

Several insurgent groups have been fighting since 1989 for Kashmir’s independence from India or its merger with Pakistan.

Anti-graft commission questions Deputy Tourism Minister over Wacik’s case

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned Deputy Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar as witness for former energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik who was named suspect in an extortion case.

“I am here not as a witness but as a discussion partner to the KPK investigators,” remarked Sapta, who admitted that he was questioned about the standard operational

programme at all, critics say.

Irfan Idrus, head of deradicalisation at the national counterterrorism agency, admitted there was no system in place to identify those who have developed extremist views and need post-release monitoring.

When Haris Amir Falah was freed after serving three years for terrorism offences, he went straight back to his Bashir-led extremist group.

Falah was convicted of funding a militant training camp that was planning gun attacks on “enemies of Islam”, including the president.

Before that he had fought with JI in parts of Indonesia during bouts of religious conflict, a source with knowledge of his case told AFP. Falah claims he went to give aid.

Just three deradicalisation sessions were held during his time in prison, involving dialogue with moderate Islamic clerics. “It was interesting enough, but it didn’t change anything about the way I think,” he said.

Falah is now a senior figure of another offshoot group, and says that while IS is “too extreme” he supports jihad in Syria and backs the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front.

“There have not been useful programmes on a national scale inside the prisons that you can point to clear impact,” said IPAC director Sidney Jones, adding that Indonesia’s deradicalisation drive was “vague” and a “bit of a mess”.

She pointed to a programme to educate convicted terrorists about the “Pancasila” -- Indonesia’s fivepoint state ideology that celebrates “unity in diversity” -- to inculcate a sense of nationalism in them.

“Prisons are still the epicentre of terrorism in Indonesia. The most dangerous militants are behind bars and recruitment is going on,” said terrorism expert Taufik Andrie from the Jakarta-based Institute for International Peace Building.

The alarming trend in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country comes despite authorities’ growing concern about Islamic militancy and in particular Islamic State (IS), which has declared an “Islamic caliphate” across swathes of Syria and Iraq.

Authorities say about 60 Indonesians are believed to have joined IS, although most analysts believe the true figure is up to 200, and concerns are mounting that they could return and revive sophisticated militant networks.

The process of election from Tuesday night until early in the morning on Wednesday ended with the winning coalition was favored with 347 votes against the Great Indonesia Coalition supporting president elect Joko Widodo that garnered 330 votes.

Osman Sapta, the only candidate from DPD in the election, was named candidate for speaker by the defeated coalition, but he was also named one of the deputy speakers of the winning coalition.

MPR, which is one of the country’s highest institutions, is made up of the whole members of the Parliament and DPD with the authority to amend and make the Constitution.

Consumer borrowing up $13.5 billion in August Associated Press

WASHINGTON — U.S. consumers increased their borrowing in August in the category that covers auto loans and student loans but cut back on their credit card borrowing. ment rate down to a six-year low of 5.9 percent last month.

That has raised worries about the potential for defaults down the road.

The Federal Reserve’s monthly credit report does not cover mortgages or any other loans that are backed by real estate.

SAO PAULO - The International Monetary Fund slashed its 2014 economic growth forecast for Brazil by a full percentage point Tuesday, to 0.3 percent, blaming weak investment and a consumer funk.

Brazil, Latin America’s biggest economy and the world’s seventh-largest, entered recession in the first half of the year, a painful reversal of the rapid growth it posted in the 2000s.

“Weak competitiveness, low business confidence, and tighter financial conditions (with interest rate hikes through April 2014) have constrained investment, and the ongoing moderation in employment and credit growth has been weighing on consumption,” the IMF said.

Inflation has also reached the government target maximum of 6.3 percent, as reported by the IMF and the Central Bank of Brazil.

The IMF said the situation was being exacerbated by political uncertainty created ahead of a presidential run-off poll on October 26 between leftist incumbent Dilma Rousseff, who topped Sunday’s first-round vote, and business favorite Aecio Neves.

“A moderate pick-up in activity is expected for 2015, with growth rising to 1.4 percent as the political uncertainty surrounding this year’s presidential election dissipates,” it said.

Between the BRICS countries (Brazil,

It’s not clear how effective quarantine would be, since infected dogs don’t show symptoms and it’s not known how long the virus can last in them, or how long tests would have to be done to check for it.

Dr. Peter Cowen, a veterinarian at North Carolina State University who has advised global health experts on animal infection disease risks, says killing the dog is “clearly an overreaction.”

“I think it’s very unfortunate they are thinking of euthanizing that dog. They should really study it instead,” he said. “Ebola has never been documented to be spread by a dog,” and that’s clearly not a major route of spread in the outbreak in Africa, he said.

Tobacco use linked to HPV, oral cancers Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - Cigarettes and other tobacco products increase the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted virus linked to mouth and throat cancer, according to a study released Tuesday.

Oral human papillomavirus type 16, or HPV16, is found in 80 percent of throat cancers and is transmitted by oral sex. Tumors related to the virus have increased by 225 percent in the United States in the past two decades.

“The practice of oral sex is common, but this cancer is rare,” said Gypsyamber D’Souza, epidemiology professor at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“There must be cofactors in the process that explain why some people develop persistent HPV16 infections and HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers when most other people don’t.”

Researchers found that HPV16 infections are more common among people who smoke or use tobacco products, regardless of their sexual practices, though nonsmokers are also at risk, according to the study in the Journal of the

American Medical Association.

“It appears that tobacco exposure increases the likelihood of having oral HPV16 infection, and although we do not yet know why, we suspect that the virus may not be cleared from the body as easily in people who use tobacco,” D’Souza said.

The study examined data from 6,887 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the United

States.

Among the group, 2,012 participants smoked or used tobacco products at the time of the study.

Researchers detected the virus in participants by administering a mouth wash that collected mouth and throat cells.

Participants’ blood and urine samples were tested for chemicals related to tobacco usage, namely cotinine and NNAL, a tobacco­r elated carcinogenic metabolite.

Subjects with elevated levels of tobacco-related chemicals in their blood or urine had a higher risk of having HPV16 DNA, while those without detectable traces of the

NEW YORK — How much coffee do you drink every day?

One cup in the morning? Or do you gulp it all day? Scientists have long known that your DNA influences how much java you consume. Now a huge study has identified some genes that may play a role.

Their apparent effect is quite small. But variations in such genes may modify coffee’s effect on a person’s health, and so genetic research may help scientists explore that, said Marilyn Cornelis of the Harvard School of Public Health.

She led the research.

The project analyzed the results of about two dozen previous studies with a combined total of more than 120,000 participants. Those participants had described how much coffee they drink a day, and allowed their DNA to be scanned.

The new work looked for minute differences in their DNA that were associated with drinking more or less coffee.

Researchers found eight such variants, two of which had already been linked to coffee consumption.

Sugiharto remarked that kite flying must be prohibited in the airspace within a radius of 32 nautical miles around the Ngurah Rai International Airport and Nusa Dua. The instruction to the local people to not fly kites is aimed to avoid any form of aerial disruption due to a previous incident when the string of a flying kite got stuck in a military helicopter while it was patrolling during APEC 2013.

“We have coordinated and cooperated with the territorial officers to restrict kite flying in the airspace of Nusa Dua area,” Sugiharto remarked.

The annual foreign ministerial meeting, BDF VII, to be held in Nusa Dua area of Badung District will be attended by four leaders from Southeast Asian countries to discuss the current situation of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region.

Four of the six new variants implicate genes that are involved with caffeine, either in how the body breaks it down or in its stimulating effects, the researchers said in a paper released Tuesday by the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

The two other newly implicated genes were a surprise because there’s no clear biological link to coffee or caffeine, Cornelis said.

They are instead involved with cholesterol levels and blood sugar.

Marian Neuhouser, a nutrition researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and study co-author, said identifying genes related to consumption may one day help doctors identify patients who need extra help in cutting down on coffee if recommended. For example, pregnant women are advised to consume only moderate amounts of caffeine because of risk of miscarriage and preterm birth, she said.

None of the identified genetic variants was related to how intensely a person tastes coffee, and Cornelis said that surprised her.

She doesn’t drink coffee, she said, because she can’t stand the stuff.

The scientists pointed to a mysterious mass extinction from natural causes called the Paleo-Eocene Thermal Maximum, which occurred around 56 million years ago.

The fossil record suggests it took around 100,000 years for calcifying organisms to recover from the acidification shock.

The experts sounded a special warning for tropical coral reefs, whose health is already affected by warmer seas.

The risks “are of great concern,

since the livelihoods of around 400 million people depend on such habitats,” they said.

The report said ocean acidification was as complex as it was important, yet there were many knowledge gaps.

It pointed to likely changes in the ecosystem as some species benefitted from the change while others were hit, and shifts in the ocean’s chemistry that, in turn, may even add to warming above the surface.

He observed that most land conversions were functioned for tourism facilities such as hotels, restaurants, villas and residential development, offices, industries and others. In addition, the land conversion also occurred in the plantation area or moor and forestry plantations. This happened due to structural policies and the shifting in socio-economic values that had resulted in a must and compulsion for farmers to sell their lands. “The excessive development of the tourism sector, industry, trade and the others has become the lion’s share on the compulsion,” he said.

Drug users proliferate to Jungut Batu Bali Post

SEMARAPURA - Klungkung Police Narcotics Unit arrested another drug (crystal meth) users with the suspect I Made Yudiana aka Dek Udi, 32, Monday (Oct 6). The resident having profession as security guard was arrested at his home at Kangin hamlet, Jungut Batu village, Nusa Penida subdistrict, around 5:30 p.m.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘7th Heaven’ actor accused of child molestation Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Two cable television networks said Tuesday they would not broadcast scheduled re-runs of veteran TV actor Stephen Collins’ beloved family series “7th Heaven.”

The networks, UP TV and TV Guide, announced the cancellations after details of molestation allegations against Collins were reported by celebrity website TMZ. New York police confirmed Tuesday they have an open investigation into allegations the actor molested a teenage girl in the early 1970s.

New York Police Department spokesman Stephen David said the complaint was filed in 2012 accusing Collins of forcing a then-14-year-old girl to commit a lewd act in the actor’s Manhattan apartment in 1972. David says the case remains open and is being handled by Special Victims Division detectives, but no charges have been filed.

tion about whether any charges should be pursued.

Collins’ lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, and talent agent, Mark Teitelbaum, did not return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

Hollywood trade publications reported Tuesday that Collins lost a role in the film “Ted 2” and resigned his position from the acting guild SAG-AFTRA. Pamela Greenwalt, a spokeswoman for SAG-AFTRA, declined comment on Collins’ departure from its national board. The actor’s name had been removed from lists of current board membership by Tuesday afternoon.

The actor’s estranged wife, Faye Grant, wrote in a sworn court declaration in Los Angeles last year that her

husband had disclosed he molested at least three young girls. Grant wrote in the November 2012 declaration in the couple’s divorce case that she reported abuse to Los Angeles police, who said they are not actively investigating the actor, but could not offer details on any previous investigations. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said it did not have records of a case being presented to prosecutors.

“Stephen admitted that he has engaged in a long-term pattern of sexually abusing minor children, including sexually molesting three young girls over a decade ago,” Grant wrote in the sworn declaration, which was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in November.

Grant and Collins separated in February 2012, roughly two weeks after the actress said she learned of her husband’s abuse in therapy sessions, according to her declaration. Collins filed for divorce three months after the separation.

NEW YORK - Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken publicly for the first time after naked pictures of her were hacked and posted online, angrily slamming the leak as a “sex crime.”

Speaking exclusively to Vanity Fair, the rising siren of the silver screen said she felt violated and was afraid how the

hacked photographs would affect her career.

“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this,” she told the November issue of the magazine, which will be available online Wednesday.

“It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of

world.”

Hackers dumped nude photos of more than a dozen Hollywood celebrities on social media last month after snatching them from Apple’s iCloud in what the tech giant called a “targeted attack.”

“It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime,” the 24-year-old actress told Vanity Fair.

“It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these websites are responsible.

“Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside.”

She told Vanity Fair she had sent the photographs to her then boyfriend while they were in a long distance relationship. She was initially tempted to write a statement, but said: “Every single thing that I tried to write made me cry or get angry.

“I started to write an apology, but I don’t have anything to say I’m sorry for. I was in a loving, healthy, great relationship for four years. It was long distance, and either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he’s going to look at you.”

“Freight delivery in August 2014 reached 1,518,031 kg. This figure is down 10.13 percent compared to the condition of freight delivery in the previous month which reached 1,689,114 kg,” said the Head of BPS Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar.

According to him, the main destination country of the freight

delivery was Australia with the amount of 454,202 kg or an increase of 7.38 percent compared to the previous month reaching 423,001 kg. The largest increase in the freight delivery was to China as much as 49.95 percent compared to the previous month, namely from 6,437 kg to 9,652 kg.

“Delivery to China showed an

increase, not only in terms of the freight alone. However, as a whole it has increased in comparison to the condition in the previous month,” he said.

He explained that freight delivery by sea port at Benoa Harbor Denpasar showed an increase in August 2014 by 0.16 percent compared to the previous month, namely from 58,842 tons to 58,939 tons. Meanwhile, the shipment from other than Benoa Harbor Denpasar also increased 1.60 percent, namely from 97,411 tons to 98,974 tons.

“The number of baggage and

domestic air freight from the Ngurah Rai airport in August 2014 amounted to 4,517,775 kg for baggage, or an increase of 41.19 percent from the previous month reaching 3,199,825 kg, while the freight amounted to 145,211 kg or a decrease of 32.29 percent compared to the previous month, reaching 214,464 kg,” he said.

Further, he explained that in terms of flight departure, the baggage and freight delivered to the main destination showed an increase and decrease. Delivery of baggage to the five main flight destinations increased respectively

to Jakarta/Soekarno Hatta (52.31 percent), Surabaya (36.41 percent), Lombok Praya (31.19 percent), Bandung (58.06 percent) and Yogyakarta (17.83 percent).

“Meanwhile, the freight delivery to the five main destinations, only the delivery to Lombok Praya showed an increase compared to the previous month namely reaching 102.07 percent, while the other destinations decreased respectively to Jakarta/Soekarno Hatta 44.33 percent, Surabaya (36.40 percent), Bandung (27.99 percent) and Yogyakarta (49.64 percent),” he said.
