Madonna asks for leniency at Russian rockers trial Associated Press Writer

MOSCOW — Madonna has voiced hope that three feminist Russian rockers on trial for performing a “punk prayer” against Vladimir Putin are released soon. The pop star told the AP during her concert tour of Russia that she supports freedom of speech and hopes the judge will show leniency. “I’m against censorship, so I

hope that the judge is lenient with them and that they are freed soon,” she said. Two weeks before Putin’s return to the presidency in March’s election, the three members of the Pussy Riot band high-kicked and danced in Moscow’s main cathedral while singing “Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!” The three were arrested, and have spent five months in custody on charges of hooliganism. European crisis spreads, its tourist visit slumps

DENPASAR - The arrival of foreign tourists from European countries in Bali is estimated to decline. This condition is triggered by the widespread economic crisis hitting the countries. Chairman of the Indonesia Employers Association (Apindo) of Bali Chapter, Panudiana Kuhn, said the percentage of decline in the tourist visit due to widespread

economic crisis in Europe could not be predicted for sure. Nevertheless, the decrease in tourist visits of the market to Bali could still be covered by the increase in domestic tourist visit to Bali predicted to grow virtually 20 percent in 2012. “Despite the arrival of European tourists is estimated to be slightly down, but expenditure of the European tourists belonging to middle class and above holidaying in Bali remains constant,” said, Panudiana

Kuhn. According to him, to get out of the crisis it would take the European countries at least 2 years. The most severe economic crisis in Europe was experienced by Greece. “The number of tourists from Greece, Portugal and Spain holidaying in Bali is very small. Conversely, the tourists from Germany, France and the Netherlands are still quite large,” he said. He said the economic crisis in

Europe was similar to the economic crisis hitting Indonesia in 1997 and 1998. Similarly, such crisis also happened to the United States in 2008 and 2009. When Indonesia faced the economic crisis, the exchange rate of a US dollar rose from IDR 1,800 to IDR 10,000. “European tourists remain to choose star hotel for their accommodation in Bali. Five and four star hotels are still appropriate for the

European market,” he said. Meanwhile, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali noted that amount of tourist visit during the period of January-May 2012 reached 1.15 million people, rising 9.31 percent over the same period last year coming to 1.05 million people. Most of them came by air transport landing at Ngurah Rai Airport and only 31,432 people through seaport by cruise ships.
