Joss Stone deported from Iran ahead of 200th world tour gig LONDON - British singer Joss Stone said she was “gutted” after being deported from Iran ahead of the latest leg of a world tour that has already taken her to Syria and North Korea. She was held shortly after arriving at Kish airport, according to a post on her Instagram account, as authorities suspected she was planning to play a public gig. Women have been banned from singing solo in public in Iran since the Islamic revolution of 1979. “We were aware there couldn’t be a public concert as I am a woman and that is illegal in this country,” she wrote, without specifying where or how she had hoped to play. “So close yet so far, this moment broke a little piece of my heart,” she wrote it the post, below a picture of herself wearing a headscarf. Iran confirmed it had denied
entry to the singer. “Joss Stone and her entourage were refused entry to the territory for lack of required documents in accordance with the rules,” Iran’s state news agency IRNA quoted police officials as saying. The gig in Kish would have been the 200th of the “Total World Tour” she embarked on five years ago, she wrote in another post before departing for Kish. That tour is an ambitious project to perform in every country on Earth and has seen her play in wartorn Libya, South Sudan as well as an “unofficial” gig in the capital of North Korea. However she described the Iranian immigration officials as “genuinely nice kind people that felt bad that they couldn’t override the system,” and that they had refused her entry “with a heavy heart”. NEW YORK - The Russian collective Pussy Riot will perform in Alabama on Thursday, a sold-out concert to raise money for women’s rights groups in light of the state’s recent passage of a near-total ban on abortion.
Proceeds from the Birmingham benefit will go to Planned Parenthood and the Yellowhammer Fund, a group that gives assistance to women seeking abortions at one of the southern US state’s three clinics. In May, Alabama lawmakers triggered outrage after pushing through legislation making abortion a felony -- even in cases of rape or incest, unless the mother’s health is at risk -- punishing doctors with up to 99 years in prison for providing the procedure. “It is ridiculous to me that it’s still a question in 2019 whether women can have an abortion,” Pussy Riot co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova told AFP ahead of the performance. “We want to come to Alabama and support women who are in quite a critical and vulnerable position right now,” she said. “Many Americans, they believe that Russia is a patriarchal country -- it’s true in a lot of ways, but when it comes to abortion rights, it’s not questionable.” The Soviet Union in 1920 became the first state in the world to legalize abortion, though it

An anti-abortion movement does exist in Russia, with activists seizing on the country’s declining population as reason for a ban, but according to Tolokonnikova it is only “insane, crazy freaks who claim that women don’t have right to have an abortion” there. Though she feels “the US going backwards” the 29-year-old said she sees progress “because activism is blooming and the feminist

movement is stronger than any time.” “The feminist movement today is so strong that it will be able to overcome these obstacles,” the Moscow-based activist said. “Those white, male dudes who are voting against abortion rights, they’re part of the history. They’re not really relevant.” She sees legislation like that signed in Alabama as evidence of politicians who are “angry, and desperate, because they feel that their time (in power) is about to end.” (afp)

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro holds the Copa America trophy as members of the Brazilian national team celebrates after winning the title by defeating Peru in the final match of the football tournament at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 7, 2019.
Brazil win Copa America despite Jesus dismissal
Ten-man Brazil held on to win the Copa America on home soil despite Gabriel Jesus’s dismissal with a 3-1 victory over Peru on Sunday. Jesus scored the decisive goal after a penalty from Peru captain Paolo Guerrero canceled out Everton’s opener for hosts Brazil at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium. A last minute penalty from substitute Richarlison sealed a win for Brazil which handed the South American giants their ninth Copa triumph and first since 2007. Jesus’s evening went sour 20 minutes from time as he was sent off for a second booking. The Manchester City striker was in tears as he left the field, making obscene hand gestures, angrily kicking a water bottle and almost knocking over the VAR booth. Brazil’s players rallied after the
dismissal however to claim a battling victory. “It’s really special because we built something together,” enthused captain Dani Alves. Earlier, after a minute’s silence was held for bossa nova legend Joao Gilberto -- who died on Saturday -- underdogs Peru made a confident start and didn’t appear overawed by either their opponents or the occasion. But it quickly became apparent that they were up against more ac-
complished players. “It was a game in which they took advantage of our mistakes and turned them all into goals,” said Peru’s Edison Flores. Peru coach Ricardo Gareca had said on Saturday they needed to prevent Brazil from dominating possession, but that was easier said than done. - Individual brilliance Brazil started to stroke the ball around commandingly, and as they did that, they looked dangerous. Their opening goal came from a piece of individual brilliance by Jesus, whose drag back fooled two defenders, creating space for him to cross for the unmarked Everton to
drill home at the back post on the quarter hour. Brazil were in control and playing like champions elect as Roberto Firmino found space on the left and crossed for Philippe Coutinho to stab wide. Left-winger Everton was clever with his movement in dragging the athletic right-back Luis Advincula out of position and Brazil’s leftback Alex Sandro found acres of space to put in a deep cross that Firmino headed over. Just as it looked as if Brazil would stroll to victory, Peru went on the attack and a Christian Cueva cross hit the arm of a sliding Thiago Silva, giving Peru a penalty that was confirmed after a VAR review.
Guerrero sent goalkeeper Alisson the wrong way from 12 yards and Peru were back in it just before half-time. But they paid for their lack of guile and experience with almost the last kick of the half as Arthur was allowed to drive at the defence from midfield following a slip from Renato Tapia that left him space to attack.
