“In case anyone is interested … $3.7m at the coal face and around $350k of conversations ongoing … and a bunch of stuff I didn’t really want to sell coming home … not a bad hourly rate for a 5 hour shift . Hope you are happy and busy,” Crowe tweeted early Saturday morning.

That $3.7 million he mentioned went to the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, which provides free, long-term music programs and instruments to disadvantaged and Indigenous children across Australia. (net)

She looked as beautiful as ever; however, discerning fans noticed one thing: She posed in profile, showing only half of her face. So, what was on the other side?

Underwood herself had told fans that she “might look a bit different” following the accident, which she said resulted in a whopping 40 to 50 stitches to her face, so it stands to reason there’d be speculation that she was still trying to hide her scars.

On Friday, Underwood quieted those rumors by finally posting a photo that revealed her entire face while she was rehearsing in the studio with her band.

It’s not a close-up shot. Still, even without zooming in, she appears pretty much the same as pre-accident, with no scarring to be seen. Whether this can be credited to makeup or talented plastic surgery (or perhaps just time and TLC) remains unknown.

What also remains unknown is why exactly she’s rehearsing, with no immediate live dates on her calendar. A likely guess is that she will be making an appearance at the April 15 Academy of Country Music Awards, where she is nominated in two categories, including Female Vocalist of the Year. If this is the case, fans will likely be hungry for news of a new album as well, since she has been posting shots of her time in the studio.

Underwood has also hinted that

she might have some “surprises” up her sleeve in conjunction with husband Mike Fisher’s NHL team, the Nashville Predators, at whose games she has performed in the past.

Regardless of her motives, it’s good to see the singer looking happy and healthy again. Since her November accident, in which she also broke her wrist, Underwood had slowed down considerably on social media, only posting photos of herself that obscure her face with strategic poses, scarves, or other accessories. Germany still clueless about motive for fatal van attack

Prosecutors said Sunday they still have no indication why a 48-year-old German man drove a van into a crowd of people in the western German city of Muenster, killing two and injuring 20 before shooting himself to death inside the van. “As of now, we don’t have any leads regarding a possible background for the deed,” prosecutor Martin Botzenhardt wrote in a joint statement with police. “The investigations are being led under high pressure in all possible directions.”

A car drove into a group of people in the western German city of Muenster

Authorities have identified the two fatalities of Saturday’s crash as a 51-year-old woman from Lueneburg County and a 65-year-old man from Broken County. Their names weren’t given as is customary in Germany.

Local media have identified the perpetrator as an industrial designer living in Muenster who had been suffering from psychological problems, but police wouldn’t confirm those details. All three bodies were taken from the crash scene in front of the well-known Kiepenkerl pub early Sunday night. The silvergrey van was hauled away hours

later, after explosives experts had thoroughly checked it.

“The van is not at the crime scene anymore, all kinds of objects have also been removed, waste of course, as well as evidence that we’ve found on the ground,” police spokeswoman Susanne Dirkorte told The Associated Press.

Inside the van, police found illegal firecrackers which were disguised as a fake bomb, a fake pistol and the gun that the perpetrator used to kill himself. Inside the man’s apartment, which was nearby the crash scene and raided late Saturday, police found more

firecrackers and a “no longer usable AK-47 machine gun.”

Police said some of the 20 injured persons were still in lifethreatening condition, but did not release further details on their identities.

Child rehabilitation safe house urgently needed in Denpasar

DENPASAR - Legal cases involving children are getting more and more. The efforts to rehabilitate victims as well as child perpetrators need a representative place. One of them is the existence of safe house. Until now, the districts and municipality in Bali do not yet have a safe house. Therefore, if there are children needing to get handled at safe house is quite difficult and even has to leave them to Lombok.

Chief Executive Officer of the Integrated Service Center for Women and Children Empowerment (P2TP2A) of Denpasar, Luh Putu Anggreni, said in her office on Friday (Apr. 6) that the safe house is very important to provide adequate place for children involved in legal cases. Currently, it is difficult for her if there are children that must be rehabilitated because there is no safe house that can accommodate them.

He said if any children to be entrusted, her center often entrusts them to one of the orphanages in Tabanan. However, the obstacles will arise in the fulfillment of daily needs, such as food as the orphanage does not have a lot of budget. In addition, her center also had left to Lombok because Lombok has already established as safe house center.

Anggreni said that all parties should take care of child protection. There is no reason that can be a justification when dealing with children involved in sexual cases. All parties should avoid legal contact with children because the threat of punishment is quite severe. Various efforts have been made to minimize child cases. One of them is by establishing a Child Protection Taskforce.

Agung evacuees submitted to Karangasem Much damaged and expired SEMARAPURA - Remaining logistics of Mount Agung evacuees having been long stored in tennis courts of Swecapura Stadium, Gelgel village, Klungkung subdistrict and Shooting Square Building, Paksebali village, Dawan subdistrict, were delivered to Tanah Ampo command post, Karangasem on Friday (Apr. 6). Many have been damaged, either due to fleas or mice. Some products are also expired.

Putu further said that some

4,000 volunteers involved in the cleaning of the garbage including civil servants, personnel of the military and police, and senior high school students, adding that the activity was entitled “Kuta Beach clean without plastic waste”.

According to Putu, the garbage cleaning also reflected the spirit of

Badung community in welcoming the International Monetary FundWorld Bank Annual Meeting, which will take place in the Nusa Dua area.

Putu Eka Merthawan also said that the garbage cleanup filled 10 trucks with 20 tons of garbage, dominated by plastic waste. “We

Govt urged to maximize clean water service at three villages

SEMARAPURA — Difficulty to get clean water faced by a number of villages in Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung district, gets the highlight from the legislative.

Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the Klungkung House of Representatives, Gede Gita Gunawan, encouraged the government to give maximum attention. Moreover, the archipelago plays an important role in supporting tourism of Klungkung as well as Bali.

“Clean water needs has been handled by the government. However, until now it has not reached the whole villages, especially those having tourism potential. This needs a balanced step between tourism, infrastructure and water,” he said on Friday (Apr. 6).

To meet the needs of the toilets, the government has utilized the Guyangan and Penida water sources. However, both springs have not been able to resolve the existing problems. Seeing such condition, there should be short-term handling efforts, where one of them is by adding the intensity of water delivery by the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM). “If for example we make reservoir in some locations, it seems that we think backwards.

The water is not utilized properly.

It’s better to do delivery services on a regular basis, directly channeling the water to settlements,” said this Golkar politician.

I Nyoman Renin Suyasa, claimed to have placed two tank trucks in Nusa Penida to handle the problem.

It is ready to deliver clean water if there is a request from the public.

“If the two trucks are considered inadequate, we will bring another to handle the water difficulty there,” he said.

As reported previously, the difficulty of clean water is faced by Pudukutan, Tanglad and Sekartaji village. The condition having going on for years has not been handled to the fullest. On that account, one hundred percent program of clean water services targeted by central government to be realized in 2019 is threatened. In addition, it hampers physical development of the community, one of which is the tourist accommodation.

Head of the Klungkung Public Works Agency, I Gusti Nyoman Supartana, said the plan of continued handling by utilizing Guyangan and Penida water sources has not got signal from provincial government, while the existing program is only the construction of well by district government.

However, it is located at Batukandik village. Indeed, a similar program is proposed to be realized at Bungamekar and Sekartaji village. Limited budget caused it to be delayed. “We are working on the steps of handling and this requires a considerable budget,” he said. (kmb45)

DENPASAR — Who does not know Ubud?

This tourism village is famous in Indonesia even in the world. Before the independence of Indonesia, around the decades of 1920-1930 Ubud has been visited by people from various countries. There were painters, sculpture artists, archaeologists, statesmen, actors and actress from all over the world. Their arrival was greeted with Balinese food.

The owner of Casa Luna Restaurant, I Ketut Suardana, 60, also witnessed the history on the development of Ubud. He said that Ubud community, especially royal family, at that time presented Balinese food as the serving to special guests.

After the independence, around the 1960s, tourists started coming. They came with new ideas, especially in terms of food. “They brought tacos, Indian food and yoghurt, and these were adopted by food stalls and developed into a restaurant,” he said. The food of Ubud in the 1967s becomes the milestone of culinary development in the Ubud area.

In the 1980s, Ubud began to change. Aside from the emergence of new foods, there were also the arrangements of tourist supporting facilities including the appearance of restaurants. At that time, there were 5 to 10 restaurants emerging. “In the 1990s, the number of restaurants in Ubud could still be counted on fingers,” he said.

After the 2000s, the restaurant in Ubud began mushrooming. “Now, perhaps there have been approximately 600 restaurants,” he added. He tried to remember the first restaurant established in Ubud. They are Murni’s Restaurant, Okawati and Candri. The restaurants are owned by local residents.

“Murni’s restaurant is owned by foreigner but married with local resident,” he said. His restaurant, Casa Luna, was established in the 1990s. Meanwhile, the Balinese menus that began to be introduced to foreigners include mixed rice, roasted suckling pig and steamed chicken.

The existence of homestay in Ubud helped boost the development of restaurant in the vicinity. Guests staying in homestay will find lunch or dinner so they stop by the restaurants. Later, the homestays also started serving simple menus such as toast, salad, et cetera.

Gradually, food trends are also developing in Ubud.

Ubud is synonymous with spiritual tourism developing healthy food, such as vegetarian food. This healthy food is estimated to have been famous in the 1990s until the 2000s although currently the healthy food is still popular among some circles.

Furthermore, coffee began to be popular especially among young people. Coffee shops have sprung up, not only in Ubud but also in Denpasar and the other parts of Bali.

Currently, he said the trend of food favored by visitors is spicy food with several levels. On that account, the challenge of eating spicy food with a certain level becomes the main attraction.

An observer of culinary tourism, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra said the development of Ubud tourism has made Ubud into a culinary destination. It is proved by the crowds and the bestselling of some local foods in Ubud which incidentally serves Balinese food. For instance, chicken rice of Kedewatan becomes the icon of Ubud.

There are also roasted suckling pig of Bu Oka, Dirty Duck and Bebek Tepi Sawah. “There is no area as rich as Ubud in Bali visited for culinary purposes,” he said.

Ubud does not only show off the development of Balinese food, but also restaurants that become a tourist destination because of its expensive price. “Moreover, the most expensive restaurant in the world is in Ubud. It is called upscale or fine dining restaurant. For example, there are Swept Away, Locavore and Mosaic. In Sanur, there is only one or two but there are many in Ubud,” he said.

Culinary tourism has become a new attribute to Ubud destination as in the book he has written entitled the Wisata Kuliner, Atribut Baru Destinasi Ubud (literally, Culinary Tourism, the New Attribute to Ubud Destination). In the book, he writes that cuisines provide a new attraction for Ubud.

Originally, Ubud was a cultural tourist destination.

Formerly, Ubud was famous for its fine arts, and then performing arts, but now it has shifted. “Today, they remain to exist, but then comes culinary tourism that gives new attraction,” he added.

The market has been famous since long time ago, not only in Klungkung district but also in other regions. Located at Semarapura Klod village, this market can be said to be the center for Eastern Bali trade. Various types of goods are sold here starting from ritual paraphernalia, vegetables to fruits.

They are supplied from a number of regions in Bali. Every day, thousands of people come here to transact. The crowd is not only seen from the morning to evening. When a number of merchants have closed, by the evening dozens of collectors of various types of commodities come in. By using a pickup truck, they crowd the parking lot and noisy atmosphere is inevitable.

Apparently, looking for a gap to walk is quite difficult let alone be driving a car.

From the top of the car, a number of collectors hawk their goods.

Other peddlers are also dropping their goods and putting them in the remaining places. This adds to the busy impression. In one of the cars, a collector is seen noting her sales. Amid the situation, some residents are also busy pushing carts containing various types of vegetables such as tomatoes, green vegetables and long beans. They push it with quick steps to the wholesale lot on the eastern side.

It is done repeatedly and pouring sweat is inevitable. They look tired.

Occasionally, it is just removed with the arm. Take a break. Not long after, they move again.

They are not buyers but only a porter. Of the existing porters, Kadek Apel is one of them. This man from Cegeng hamlet, Kerta Bhuana village, Sidemen subdistrict, admitted that he has been doing the work for several years.

The need for money to support his family is the cause. He comes to the market at 17:00 and come back home around 22:00. From such work, at least he can earn IDR 50,000. “This is the wage given per basket,” he said on Thursday night (Apr. 5).

Relying on life is not just to such work. From the morning to noon, he spends time as a farmer. The results are not much and often uncertain. Though being heavy, he is still grateful. He considered it more fortunate than others who have trouble in finding work. “Many people do this kind of work from the same village, reaching dozens of people,” he added.

Similar profession is also pursued by another Sidemen resident, Ni Nengah Wali. Instead, she works longer namely from 17:00 to 02:00 in the morning. Her efforts are directly proportional to the income.

The wages she earns can reach IDR 200,000. “She used to be a farm worker and maximally earns IDR 50,000 per day. The current work is better and the wage is bigger,” she said.

While dropping long beans, this woman who has not had a child told briefly at the beginning of working as a market porter. Several times she got sick due to frequent working overnight. Moreover, she should consult to a doctor. However, after a long time, she got recovered. “This work has been running for only a year,” she said. (sos)

Japan launches Marines unit amid China’s growing presence

TOKYO - Japan’s military on Saturday launched its first Marines unit, tasked with defending remote islands in the face of China’s growing maritime presence in the region.

Chief Executive of Integrated Service Center for Women and Children Empowerment (P2TP2A) of Denpasar, Luh Putu Anggreni, said on Friday (Apr. 6) that she was surprised by the many cases of domestic violence, as well as legal cases involving children. Actually, her center has disseminated the threat of high penalties to the perpetrators of domestic violence.

However, the cases of domestic violence still occur.

Of the several cases handled so far, domestic violence is caused by various factors. The main factor is the presence of a third person in the family. Husband or wife often quarrels due to suspecting its partner of having an affair. “Many of these

cases trigger domestic violence,” she said.

In addition to these problems, family economic condition also often triggers domestic violence.

Miscommunication and parenting are also factors causing domestic violence. “What has been seen is quite a lot, while more people may be hiding their domestic violence cases because the character of our society is more reluctant to reveal its own shame. Therefore, they will not report the cases,” said Anggreni.

A tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft: Japan’s new Marine unit will be equipped with them.

The Self-Defence Forces’ amphibious fighting unit staged an exercise with US Marines at Sasebo in western Japan following the inauguration ceremony.

The 2,100-member brigade, based in Sasebo, will be responsible for defending remote islands and retaking them if they are invaded.

“Defending remote islands is a pressing task at a time when security surrounding our country is getting more severe,” vice defence minister Tomohiro Yamamoto told the ceremony.

Japan has a longstanding dispute with China over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. These are administered by Japan, which calls them the “Senkakus”, but also claimed by China, which knows them as the “Diaoyus.”

Chinese coastguard vessels have routinely travelled close to the disputed islands since relations worsened in 2012, when Tokyo’s government took over some of them.

The new amphibious operations unit is expected to grow into a 3,000-member force, using V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and amphibious assault vehicles for storming beaches, Kyodo News said.

Japan had long been reluctant to create an amphibious fighting unit in light of its pacifist constitution, which bans the country from using force to settle international disputes. (afp)

Dozens reported killed in suspected Syria gas attack; Damascus denies BEIRUT - A chemical attack on a rebelheld town in eastern Ghouta killed dozens of people, a medical relief organization and a rescue service said, and Washington said the reports - if confirmed - would demand an immediate international response.

A joint statement by the medical relief organization Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and the civil defense, which operates in rebel-held areas, said 49 people had died.

The Russian-backed Syrian state denied government forces had launched any chemical attack as reports began circulating on Saturday night. The government said rebels in the eastern Ghouta town of Douma were collapsing and spreading false news.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports. The lifeless bodies of around a dozen children, women and men, some of them with foam at the mouth, were shown in one video circulated by activists. “Douma city, April 7 ... there is a strong smell here,” a voice can be heard saying.

The U.S. State Department said reports of mass casualties from an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma were “horrifying” and would, if confirmed, “demand an immediate response by the international community”.

President Bashar al-Assad has won back control of nearly all of eastern Ghouta in a Russian-backed military campaign that began in February, leaving just Douma in rebel hands. After a lull of a few days, government forces began bombarding Douma again on Friday.

The offensive in Ghouta has been one of the deadliest of the seven-year-long war, killing more than 1,600 civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory said it could not confirm whether chemical weapons had been used in the attack on Saturday. Observatory Director Rami Abdulrahman said 11 people had died in Douma as a result of suffocation caused by the smoke from conventional weapons being dropped by the government. It said a total of 70 people suffered breathing difficulties.

Medical relief organization SAMS said a chlorine bomb hit Douma hospital, killing six people, and a second attack with “mixed agents” including nerve agents had hit a nearby building.

Basel Termanini, the U.S.-based vice president of SAMS, told Reuters another 35 people had been killed at the nearby apartment building, most of them women and children. SAMS operates 139 medical facilities in Syria where it supports 1,880 medical personnel, according to its website.

“We are contacting the U.N. and the U.S. government and the European governments,” he said by telephone.

The joint statement from SAMS and the civil defense said medical centers had received more than 500 cases of people suffering breathing difficulties, frothing from the mouth and smelling of chlorine.

One of the victims was dead on arrival, and six died later, it said. Civil defense volunteers reported more than 42 cases of people dead at their homes showing the same symptoms, it said.

Syrian state news agency SANA said the rebel group in Douma, Jaish al-Islam, was making “chemical attack fabrications in an exposed and failed attempt to obstruct advances by the Syrian Arab army,” citing an official source.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauret recalled a 2017 sarin gas attack in northwestern Syria that the West and the United Nations blamed on Assad’s government.

“The Assad regime and its backers must be held accountable and any further attacks prevented immediately,” she said.

“The United States calls on Russia to end this unmitigated support immediately and work with the international community to prevent further, barbaric chemical weapons attacks,” Nauert said in a statement.

The Syrian government has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons during the conflict. (net)

The stakes aren’t as high, but this cold trade war could be very destructive

During the cold war, the US and the Soviet Union had the potential to obliterate each other with their nuclear arsenals.

Both sides knew a conflict was unwinnable, and that explained why the missiles remained in their silos. It was known as mutually assured destruction.

The closest the world came to MAD was the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, which ended with the Kremlin backing down over its decision to base nuclear weapons 90 miles from the Florida coast.

More than half a century later, memories of the cold war have come flooding back as the US and China lock horns over trade. Financial markets have gyrated as Washington and Beijing display their protectionist hardware. The rhetoric has become increasingly bellicose. Khrushchev and Kennedy were playing for much higher stakes, but the principle is the same: the missile-laden ships are getting ever closer to the shore.

Serious trade trouble between the US and China has been in the offing ever since Donald Trump won the presidential election in 2016. In that year, America ran a trade deficit of about $30bn a month with China, but Trump said it was only that big because Beijing was playing dirty.

Unlike previous presidents who talked tougher than they acted, Trump has kept the promises he made about China while running for president. With strong backing from corporate America, he launched an investigation into China’s alleged theft of US intellectual property. Last Tuesday, US trade representative Robert Lighthizer announced that, as a result of that probe, the US would release a list of some 1,300 products that could be targeted with a 25% tariff – worth a total of $50bn – unless China changes its ways.

The following day, Beijing announced that it would fight fire with fire. China published a list of US imports, again worth $50bn, on which it would levy a 25% tariff. China’s hit list was smaller but carefully targeted to hurt sensitive US sectors, such as soya bean farming and the aerospace industries.

Larry Kudlow, Trump’s chief economic adviser, tried to calm things down by insisting that the US and China would be able to sort out their problems without a trade war. The conciliatory atmosphere did not last, however, because late on Thursday Trump said he had asked Lighthizer to consider imposing tariffs on another $100bn of Chinese imports. Beijing responded by saying it would fight the US “at any cost”.

For now, this is still a cold trade war. Neither side has yet imposed its threatened tariffs, and there is plenty of time for a negotiated settlement. What ought to happen is simple.

China should recognise that there is some merit in Trump’s argument. US firms have essentially been forced to cede intellectual property rights to gain access to the big and growing Chinese market. If Beijing announced an end to that practice, Trump could remove his threat of tariffs and both sides could then disarm.

But the White House needs to create the conditions under which Beijing can do this. China is the world’s second biggest economy and an emerging superpower. It demands to be treated as an equal rather than as a developing country that has no option but to do Washington’s bidding.

In a tit-for-tat tariff war, the Chinese would come off worse – because they export more to the US than they import. But Beijing has other weapons, including its massive holding of US Treasury bills. Any move to dump these government bonds would be mutually assured destruction with a vengeance. But that’s the danger with cold wars: in the wrong hands, they can turn hot. (afp)

Richest 1% on target to own two-thirds of all wealth by 2030

World leaders are being warned that the continued accumulation of wealth at the top will fuel growing distrust and anger over the coming decade unless action is taken to restore the balance.

An alarming projection produced by the House of Commons library suggests that if trends seen since the 2008 financial crash were to continue, then the top 1% will hold 64% of the world’s wealth by 2030. Even taking the financial crash into account, and measuring their assets over a longer period, they would still hold more than half of all wealth.

Since 2008, the wealth of the richest 1% has been growing at an average of 6% a year – much faster than the 3% growth in wealth of the remaining 99% of the world’s population. Should that continue, the top 1% would hold wealth equating to $305tn (£216.5tn) – up from $140tn today.

Analysts suggest wealth has become concentrated at the top because of recent income inequality, higher rates of saving among the wealthy, and the accumulation of assets. The wealthy also invested a large amount of equity in businesses, stocks and other financial assets, which have handed them disproportionate benefits.

New polling by Opinium suggests that voters perceive a major problem with the influence exerted by the very wealthy. Asked to select a group that would have the most power in 2030, most (34%) said the super-rich, while 28% opted for national governments.

In a sign of falling levels of trust, those surveyed said they feared the consequences of wealth inequality would be

rising levels of corruption (41%) or the “super-rich enjoying unfair influence on government policy” (43%).

The research was commissioned by Liam Byrne, the former Labour cabinet minister, as part of a gathering of MPs, academics, business leaders, trade unions and civil society leaders focused on addressing the problem. The actor Michael Sheen, who has opted to scale back his Hollywood career to campaign against high-interest credit providers, was among those supporting the calls.

The hope is to create pressure for global action when leaders of the G20 group of nations gather for a summit in Buenos Aires in November. Byrne, who organised the first OECD global parliamentary conference on inclusive growth, said he believed global inequality was “now at a tipping point”.

“If we don’t take steps to rewrite the rules of how our economies work, then we condemn ourselves to a future that remains unequal for good,” he said. “That’s morally bad, and economically disastrous, risking a new explosion in instability, corruption and poverty.”

In a sign of the concern about the accumulation of wealth in the hands of so few, the move has gained support from across the political divide.

George Freeman, the Tory MP and former head of the prime minister’s policy board, said: “While mankind has never

seen such income inequality, it is also true that mankind has never experienced such rapid increases in living standards. Around the world billions of people are being lifted out of poverty at a pace never seen before.

But the extraordinary concentration of global wealth today – fuelled by the pace of technological innovation and globalisation – poses serious challenges.

“If the system of capitalist liberal democracy which has triumphed in the west is to pass the big test of globalisation – and the assault from radical Islam as well as its own internal pressures from post-crash austerity – we need some new thinking on ways to widen opportunity, share ownership and philanthropy. Fast.”

Demands for action from the group include improving productivity to ensure wages rise and reform of capital markets to promote greater equality.

Danny Dorling, professor of geography at the University of Oxford, said the scenario in which the super-rich accumulated even more wealth by 2030 was a realistic one.

“Even if the income of the wealthiest people in the world stops rising dramatically in the future, their wealth will still grow for some time,” he said.

“The last peak of income inequality was in 1913. We are near that again, but even if we reduce inequality now it will continue to grow for one to two more decades.” (afp)

Caruk, a Rare and Sacred Gamelan

An old gamelan instrument called Caruk made its first appearance at the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) this year. The Caruk gamelan troupe from Pau Village, Banjarangkan performed music that is rarely heard, on the Amgsoka stage of the Denpsar Art Center. “The caruk gamelan instrument is estimated to have originated in the fifteenth century and this is the fifth generation of this particular gamelan troupe” explained art coordinator of Pau customary village, Nengah Sukirta. Pau Village and Tangkas Village are the only places in Klungkung where caruk gamlean can be found, said Sukirta adding that they are only played for Deva Yajna and Pitri Yajna religious cermonies.

“For Pitri Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played during the cremation ceremony during menek tumpang salu, menek bea and mapurwadaksina rites that culminate in the nyekah ritual. For Dewa Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played dur-

ing the mamungkah rite. It is played at the peak of the ritual when the deities circle the offerings clockwise –known as murwa daksina” he elaborated.

endra, said that this gamelan instrument is a rare and sacred instrument.

Caruk gamelan consists of two small xylophones and one saron that are always played together. “We also have an extra player so for the BAF performance there were four musi-

cians” he Suendra. Suendra added that nine different caruk gamelan compositions were handed down by the ancestors, however because the palm-leaf manuscripts on which they were written are hard to read, only five of the compositions are played. All five were performed at this year’s BAF: the Tabuh Ririgan, Tabuh Rejang, Tabuh Ombak Segara, Tabuh Panji Marga and Tabuh Manu Kaba.

“For a very long time only five of the compositions can be played because of the difficulty in reading

the lontars, but we are determined to find a way to read the others so that we can perform them in next year’s BAF”, explained Suendra.

Currently, there are only four people in Pau customary village who are actively involved playing gamelan so Suendra is eager to encourage younger people to learn to play. “The notation for caruk gamelan music is different than other gamelan so it is harder to learn. It takes many years to master. After the BAF we will start to teach young children, which may take even longer”, he said. (kmb)

This village has a Kendang Mebarung art troupe with the member of 25 people.

Mebarung art, so that the typical art of Jembrana will not go extinct in harmony with the time changes. The coaching includes the technique of beating, creating sounds, drinking carakan water and mebetenan (foot toss). 1 killed in fire at Trump Tower in New York

NEW YORK — A raging fire that tore through a 50th-floor apartment at Trump Tower on Saturday killed a man inside and sent flames and thick, black smoke pouring from windows of the president’s namesake skyscraper.

New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the cause of the blaze is not yet known but the apartment was “virtually entirely on fire” when firefighters arrived after 5:30 p.m.

“It was a very difficult fire, as you can imagine,” Nigro told reporters outside the building in midtown Manhattan. “The apartment is quite large.”

A 67-year-old man who was in the apartment was taken to a hospital and died a short time later, the New York Police Department said. His name was not immediately released. Officials said four firefighters also suffered minor injuries.

Shortly after news of the fire broke, Trump, who was in Washington, tweeted: “Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” Asked if that assessment was accurate, Nigro said, “It’s a well-built building. The upper floors, the residence floors, are not sprinklered.”

Fire sprinklers were not required in New York City high-rises when Trump Tower was completed in 1983.

Subsequent updates to the building code required commercial skyscrapers to install the sprinklers retroactively, but owners of older residential high-rises are not required to install sprinklers unless the building undergoes major renovations.

Some fire-safety advocates pushed for a requirement that older apartment buildings be retrofitted with sprinklers when New York City passed a law requiring them in new residential highrises in 1999, but officials in the administration of then-mayor Rudy Giuliani said that would be too expensive.

Nigro noted that no member of the Trump family was in the 664-foot tower Saturday.

Trump’s family has an apartment on the top floors of the 58-story building, but he has spent little time in New York since taking office. The headquarters of the Trump Organization is on the 26th floor.

Nigro said firefighters and Secret Service members checked on the condition of Trump’s apartment. About 200 firefighters and emergency medical service workers responded to the fire, he said.

Some residents said they didn’t get any notification from building management to evacuate.

Lalitha Masson, a 76-year-old resident, called it “a very, very terrifying experience.”

Masson told The New York Times that she did not receive any announcement about leaving, and that when she called the front desk no one answered.

“When I saw the television, I thought we were finished,” said Masson, who lives on the 36th floor with her husband, Narinder, who is 79 and has Parkinson’s disease.

She said she started praying because she felt it was the end.

“I called my oldest son and said goodbye to him because the way it looked everything was falling out of the window, and it reminded me of 9/11,” Masson said. (net)

Puerto Rico to shutter 283 more schools this Summer as education crisis deepens SAN JUAN - In another bleak development for Puerto Rico’s decimated education system, the island’s Department of Education announced Thursday that it would close an additional 283 schools this summer, a 25 percent reduction in the current number of public schools.

Puerto Rico Education Secretary Julia Keleher said a sharp decline in student enrollment and the territory’s ongoing economic crisis, especially since the devastation of Hurricane Maria, had prompted the closures.

Almost half of all schools are at less than 60 percent of enrollment capacity, Keleher said, with nearly 39,000 fewer students than a year ago. Officials have said several thousand more students are expected to leave the island for the mainland to continue their education in the coming years.

“We know it’s a difficult and painful process,” Keleher said of the impending closures, according to The Associated Press. “Our children deserve the best education that we are capable of giving them, taking into account Puerto Rico’s fiscal reality.”

The closures are expected save the education department about $150 million, said Keleher. She stressed, however, that no teachers would be laid off but some would be transferred between schools.

Hurricane Maria, which devastated the U.S. territory in September, dealt a major blow to Puerto Rico’s education system, which had already been suffering from an enrollment slump.

Last summer, 179 public schools on the island were shuttered and 150 more were closed from 2010 to 2015.

Following the new spate of closures, just 828 public schools will

remain open, AP reported.

Teachers and parents have reacted with fury and frustration to the new closures.

“This is like killing 300 communities,” Aida Díaz, president of Puerto Rico’s Association of Teachers, told Education Week. “We’re going to have communities that are not going to have any schools. The only place they have to meet is the school.”

The association said the school closures would affect 60,000 students and 6,000 teachers, reported Puerto Rico’s El Nuevo Dia newspaper.

Díaz estimated that 4,000 non-tenured teachers would leave their jobs regardless of the Education Department’s no-layoffs promise.

“I don’t even know where the schools they’re being located to are,” Haydee Del Valle, whose 12-year-old son will need to transfer, told NBC News on Friday. “I don’t know if they’re too far away from us or if the school bus they take now will be able to take them there.”

“This makes me sad because this is a great school,” she added.

Díaz criticized the Education Department for not being transparent about how it decided which schools to close, noting that 45 of the schools had been recognized as schools of “excellence.”

Thursday’s closure announcement comes on the heels of a controversial education reform bill signed in March by Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. The bill aims to introduce a charter school pilot program and private school vouchers for 3 percent of students.

Thousands of teachers went on strike on March 19 to protest the bill.

Flash floods submerge hundreds of homes in Cianjur, W Java CIANJUR- Flash floods hit Cianjur city and the sub-districts of Cianjur, Cugenang, Pacet, and Cipanas in Cianjur District, West Java Province, on Sunday, submerging hundreds of homes.

More than 10 houses were seriously damaged after being swept away by flooding in Cianjur sub-district, according to information from the Cianjur disaster mitigation office.

Landslides also struct Mangunkert village in Cugenang subdistrict, and Batulawang village in Cipanas sub-district.

New Zealand climber found dead

SEMARANG - A New Zealander named Andrey Voytech was found dead after going missing while climbing Mount Merbabu, Central Java, at 8:40 am local time on Saturday.

“The body of the climber was found in the river allegedly after falling off the cliff,” Zulhawary Agustianto, a spokesman of the National Search and Rescue Agency of Central Java, noted here on Saturday.

According to Agustianto, the victim allegedly fell off an eightmeter-high cliff. He revealed that the body of the deceased was taken through the Chuntel ascent to the Salatiga District General Hospital for an autopsy. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained, pending the police’s autopsy.

Earlier, Andrey Voytech, a New Zealand climber, was reported missing by his friend, who was staying at a hotel in Magelang. The victim`s friend confirmed that Voytech was on his way to Merbabu via Cunthel of Semarang District on Friday (Mar 30). (ant)

“If you know the game, everyone is accepting of that,” the Cleveland Cavaliers star and three-time NBA champion told reporters on Thursday, according to ClutchPoints reporter Nikki Goel.

Much like the three other major U.S. sports leagues and their counterparts across the world—such as England’s Premier League, Australia’s National Rugby League and the Spanish and Italian main soccer leagues—the NBA does not have any female head coaches.

James said talent and experience, as opposed to gender, are the key ingredients for a successful head coach.

“It’s the same thing with players,” he said. “You have different walks and shapes and lives of players, but if you can play, you can play. You always accept it. You can’t play, you can’t play. If you know the game, you’re always ac-

cepted. If you don’t know the game, it’s all about your knowledge of the game. It shouldn’t matter if you’re a male or a female.”

James pointed to the number of female commentators and journalists in the NBA—singling out ESPN’s Doris Burke, who will be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in September—as proof that women are as knowledgeable about the game as men.

“Listen, we have so many female reporters now that know the game, and they cover the game,” James said, according to USA Today. “I mean, you look at Doris Burke, she’s one of the greatest that we have in our game. She knows the game, so it doesn’t matter.”

Not just on the track for the Stewart-Haas Racing driver but also in terms of building a star athlete into a transcendent brand whose boundless popularity can carry a sport.

After qualifying second Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway, Harvick was asked who could be the next driver to “move the needle” like a Tiger Woods in golf.

He said there was one active driver who could, and one former driver who had the chance but didn’t.

“The guy that has the most potential is Chase Elliott with the traditional NASCAR fans,” Harvick said. “There’s a difference between a superstar and an megastar. In the past, a superstar wasn’t a megastar because of the fact that he didn’t win enough. Chase Elliott is the next guy that can be a megastar, but you have to win.

“When you have a guy like Tiger Woods, he’s won and won and won and won and won and won. Danica (Patrick) had a personality. She didn’t perform well. She could have been a megastar as well. Danica didn’t perform well. In the end, performance trumped superstar to megastar. And if you want to be a megastar you have to perform and win. That’s the effect that a guy like Tiger Woods has.”

Patrick was Harvick’s SHR teammate for the past four seasons before retiring after this year’s Daytona 500.

It isn’t the first time Harvick has spoken out about the need for popularity to be linked to winning.

Last year, he said Dale Earnhardt Jr. had “stunted” NASCAR’s growth because he lacked a championship (Earnhardt recently said the comment still stung).

Harvick clarified some of his

position Friday, explaining that neither he nor seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson could become megastars because they lacked the necessary pedigree.

“It’s something that when you look at a guy like Jimmie Johnson — and Jimmie and I have had this conversation — we don’t have that capability from that traditional, roots family standpoint that you can be that guy,” he said. “There’s only a few people that come through the sport that can be that guy. Jeff Gordon came through, but he won a lot in the beginning. He was that young guy that kept winning and won championships and had that immediate impact as far as catching everyone’s attention.

“After you get in here for a few years and don’t catch everyone’s attention you just kind of wind up being one of the guys unless you end up winning a lot.”

Harvick said it would help if there were a few more natural rivalries among the younger set.

“I think when you look at the dynamic between Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, that’s the dynamic that we have the potential to have right now with the group of young racers that have come in,” he said.

“But somebody has to step up and be that winner. Who’s the young winner? Who’s going to be the guy that’s going to go against (Martin) Truex (Jr.) and challenge him for the championship that he’s defending and win races?

“I’m happy with where I’m at.

We’re winning races and gaining momentum and doing all the things we need to do. If we keep winning you’ll keep gaining that same momentum with the fans and hopefully we can keep doing that. … I love to talk about it because it’s very interesting.” (net)

What followed was extraordinary. Manchester United scored, then added another and, finally, a third to complete an improbable feat of escapology against the Premier League’s champions-inwaiting. From 2-0 down to 3-2 up in the space of 16 second-half minutes - the game had been turned upside down and City will have to wait a little longer before the coronation.

It was an wild, eccentric comeback after a calamitous first-half performance from José Mourinho’s team. Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan had both scored for City and it was difficult to keep count of the number of other chances for the home side to start the celebrations early.

United certainly rode their luck, in particular when Ashley Young’s studs-up lunge on the substitute Sergio Aguero should have resulted in a penalty and a red card. Yet this was a tremendous recovery from the team in red, and if Guardiola’s players defend this way in the return leg of their Champions League tie against Liverpool on Tuesday, their chances of reaching the semi-final will be non-existent.

That is the match that really counts for Guardiola. City’s manager even took the calculated gamble here of putting Kevin de Bruyne on the bench. Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker were also rested with Tuesday’s assignment in mind and Guardiola resisted any temptation to fast-track the fit-again Aguero into the starting line-up.

For United, the indignities would have been considerable and it might have been a rout if Raheem Sterling had not endured one of those days in front of goal. Sterling had two golden chances during that spell in the first half when the goals arrived and City’s supporters must have felt like the blood in their veins had been transformed into red wine. “If you know the game, everyone is accepting of that,” the Cleveland Cavaliers star and three-time NBA champion told reporters on Thursday, according to ClutchPoints reporter Nikki Goel.

Much like the three other major U.S. sports leagues and their counterparts across the world—such as England’s Premier League, Australia’s National Rugby League and the Spanish and Italian main soccer leagues—the NBA does not have any female head coaches.

James said talent and experience, as opposed to gender, are the key ingredients for a successful head coach.

“It’s the same thing with players,” he said. “You have different walks and shapes and lives of players, but if you can play, you can play. You always accept it. You can’t play, you can’t play. If you know the game, you’re always ac-

cepted. If you don’t know the game, it’s all about your knowledge of the game. It shouldn’t matter if you’re a male or a female.”

James pointed to the number of female commentators and journalists in the NBA—singling out ESPN’s Doris Burke, who will be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in September—as proof that women are as knowledgeable about the game as men.

“Listen, we have so many female reporters now that know the game, and they cover the game,” James said, according to USA Today. “I mean, you look at Doris Burke, she’s one of the greatest that we have in our game. She knows the game, so it doesn’t matter.”

Not just on the track for the Stewart-Haas Racing driver but also in terms of building a star athlete into a transcendent brand whose boundless popularity can carry a sport.

After qualifying second Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway, Harvick was asked who could be the next driver to “move the needle” like a Tiger Woods in golf.

He said there was one active driver who could, and one former driver who had the chance but didn’t.

“The guy that has the most potential is Chase Elliott with the traditional NASCAR fans,” Harvick said. “There’s a difference between a superstar and an megastar. In the past, a superstar wasn’t a megastar because of the fact that he didn’t win enough. Chase Elliott is the next guy that can be a megastar, but you have to win.

“When you have a guy like Tiger Woods, he’s won and won and won and won and won and won. Danica (Patrick) had a personality. She didn’t perform well. She could have been a megastar as well. Danica didn’t perform well. In the end, performance trumped superstar to megastar. And if you want to be a megastar you have to perform and win. That’s the effect that a guy like Tiger Woods has.”

Patrick was Harvick’s SHR teammate for the past four seasons before retiring after this year’s Daytona 500.

It isn’t the first time Harvick has spoken out about the need for popularity to be linked to winning.

Last year, he said Dale Earnhardt Jr. had “stunted” NASCAR’s growth because he lacked a championship (Earnhardt recently said the comment still stung).

position Friday, explaining that neither he nor seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson could become megastars because they lacked the necessary pedigree.

“It’s something that when you look at a guy like Jimmie Johnson — and Jimmie and I have had this conversation — we don’t have that capability from that traditional, roots family standpoint that you can be that guy,” he said. “There’s only a few people that come through the sport that can be that guy. Jeff Gordon came through, but he won a lot in the beginning. He was that young guy that kept winning and won championships and had that immediate impact as far as catching everyone’s attention.

“After you get in here for a few years and don’t catch everyone’s attention you just kind of wind up being one of the guys unless you end up winning a lot.”

Harvick said it would help if there were a few more natural rivalries among the younger set.

“I think when you look at the dynamic between Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, that’s the dynamic that we have the potential to have right now with the group of young racers that have come in,” he said.

“But somebody has to step up and be that winner. Who’s the young winner? Who’s going to be the guy that’s going to go against (Martin) Truex (Jr.) and challenge him for the championship that he’s defending and win races?

“I’m happy with where I’m at.

We’re winning races and gaining momentum and doing all the things we need to do. If we keep winning you’ll keep gaining that same momentum with the fans and hopefully we can keep doing that. … I love to talk about it because it’s very interesting.” (net)

1 killed in fire at Trump Tower in New York

NEW YORK — A raging fire that tore through a 50th-floor apartment at Trump Tower on Saturday killed a man inside and sent flames and thick, black smoke pouring from windows of the president’s namesake skyscraper.

New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the cause of the blaze is not yet known but the apartment was “virtually entirely on fire” when firefighters arrived after 5:30 p.m.

“It was a very difficult fire, as you can imagine,” Nigro told reporters outside the building in midtown Manhattan. “The apartment is quite large.”

A 67-year-old man who was in the apartment was taken to a hospital and died a short time later, the New York Police Department said. His name was not immediately released. Officials said four firefighters also suffered minor injuries.

Shortly after news of the fire broke, Trump, who was in Washington, tweeted: “Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” Asked if that assessment was accurate, Nigro said, “It’s a well-built building. The upper floors, the residence floors, are not sprinklered.”

Fire sprinklers were not required in New York City high-rises when Trump Tower was completed in 1983.

Subsequent updates to the building code required commercial skyscrapers to install the sprinklers retroactively, but owners of older residential high-rises are not required to install sprinklers unless the building undergoes major renovations.

Some fire-safety advocates pushed for a requirement that older apartment buildings be retrofitted with sprinklers when New York City passed a law requiring them in new residential highrises in 1999, but officials in the administration of then-mayor Rudy Giuliani said that would be too expensive.

Nigro noted that no member of the Trump family was in the 664-foot tower Saturday.

Trump’s family has an apartment on the top floors of the 58-story building, but he has spent little time in New York since taking office. The headquarters of the Trump Organization is on the 26th floor.

Nigro said firefighters and Secret Service members checked on the condition of Trump’s apartment. About 200 firefighters and emergency medical service workers responded to the fire, he said.

Some residents said they didn’t get any notification from building management to evacuate.

Lalitha Masson, a 76-year-old resident, called it “a very, very terrifying experience.”

Masson told The New York Times that she did not receive any announcement about leaving, and that when she called the front desk no one answered.

“When I saw the television, I thought we were finished,” said Masson, who lives on the 36th floor with her husband, Narinder, who is 79 and has Parkinson’s disease.

She said she started praying because she felt it was the end.

“I called my oldest son and said goodbye to him because the way it looked everything was falling out of the window, and it reminded me of 9/11,” Masson said. (net)

Puerto Rico to shutter 283 more schools this Summer as education crisis deepens SAN JUAN - In another bleak development for Puerto Rico’s decimated education system, the island’s Department of Education announced Thursday that it would close an additional 283 schools this summer, a 25 percent reduction in the current number of public schools.

Puerto Rico Education Secretary Julia Keleher said a sharp decline in student enrollment and the territory’s ongoing economic crisis, especially since the devastation of Hurricane Maria, had prompted the closures.

Almost half of all schools are at less than 60 percent of enrollment capacity, Keleher said, with nearly 39,000 fewer students than a year ago. Officials have said several thousand more students are expected to leave the island for the mainland to continue their education in the coming years.

“We know it’s a difficult and painful process,” Keleher said of the impending closures, according to The Associated Press. “Our children deserve the best education that we are capable of giving them, taking into account Puerto Rico’s fiscal reality.”

The closures are expected save the education department about $150 million, said Keleher. She stressed, however, that no teachers would be laid off but some would be transferred between schools.

Hurricane Maria, which devastated the U.S. territory in September, dealt a major blow to Puerto Rico’s education system, which had already been suffering from an enrollment slump.

Last summer, 179 public schools on the island were shuttered and 150 more were closed from 2010 to 2015.

Following the new spate of closures, just 828 public schools will

remain open, AP reported.

Teachers and parents have reacted with fury and frustration to the new closures.

“This is like killing 300 communities,” Aida Díaz, president of Puerto Rico’s Association of Teachers, told Education Week. “We’re going to have communities that are not going to have any schools. The only place they have to meet is the school.”

The association said the school closures would affect 60,000 students and 6,000 teachers, reported Puerto Rico’s El Nuevo Dia newspaper.

Díaz estimated that 4,000 non-tenured teachers would leave their jobs regardless of the Education Department’s no-layoffs promise.

“I don’t even know where the schools they’re being located to are,” Haydee Del Valle, whose 12-year-old son will need to transfer, told NBC News on Friday. “I don’t know if they’re too far away from us or if the school bus they take now will be able to take them there.”

“This makes me sad because this is a great school,” she added.

Díaz criticized the Education Department for not being transparent about how it decided which schools to close, noting that 45 of the schools had been recognized as schools of “excellence.”

Thursday’s closure announcement comes on the heels of a controversial education reform bill signed in March by Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. The bill aims to introduce a charter school pilot program and private school vouchers for 3 percent of students.

Thousands of teachers went on strike on March 19 to protest the bill.

New Zealand climber found dead

SEMARANG - A New Zealander named Andrey Voytech was found dead after going missing while climbing Mount Merbabu, Central Java, at 8:40 am local time on Saturday.

“The body of the climber was found in the river allegedly after falling off the cliff,” Zulhawary Agustianto, a spokesman of the National Search and Rescue Agency of Central Java, noted here on Saturday.

According to Agustianto, the victim allegedly fell off an eightmeter-high cliff. He revealed that the body of the deceased was taken through the Chuntel ascent to the Salatiga District General Hospital for an autopsy. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained, pending the police’s autopsy.

Earlier, Andrey Voytech, a New Zealand climber, was reported missing by his friend, who was staying at a hotel in Magelang. The victim`s friend confirmed that Voytech was on his way to Merbabu via Cunthel of Semarang District on Friday (Mar 30). (ant)

The stakes aren’t as high, but this cold trade war could be very destructive

During the cold war, the US and the Soviet Union had the potential to obliterate each other with their nuclear arsenals.

Both sides knew a conflict was unwinnable, and that explained why the missiles remained in their silos. It was known as mutually assured destruction.

The closest the world came to MAD was the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, which ended with the Kremlin backing down over its decision to base nuclear weapons 90 miles from the Florida coast.

More than half a century later, memories of the cold war have come flooding back as the US and China lock horns over trade. Financial markets have gyrated as Washington and Beijing display their protectionist hardware. The rhetoric has become increasingly bellicose. Khrushchev and Kennedy were playing for much higher stakes, but the principle is the same: the missile-laden ships are getting ever closer to the shore.

Serious trade trouble between the US and China has been in the offing ever since Donald Trump won the presidential election in 2016. In that year, America ran a trade deficit of about $30bn a month with China, but Trump said it was only that big because Beijing was playing dirty.

Unlike previous presidents who talked tougher than they acted, Trump has kept the promises he made about China while running for president. With strong backing from corporate America, he launched an investigation into China’s alleged theft of US intellectual property. Last Tuesday, US trade representative Robert Lighthizer announced that, as a result of that probe, the US would release a list of some 1,300 products that could be targeted with a 25% tariff – worth a total of $50bn – unless China changes its ways.

The following day, Beijing announced that it would fight fire with fire. China published a list of US imports, again worth $50bn, on which it would levy a 25% tariff. China’s hit list was smaller but carefully targeted to hurt sensitive US sectors, such as soya bean farming and the aerospace industries.

Larry Kudlow, Trump’s chief economic adviser, tried to calm things down by insisting that the US and China would be able to sort out their problems without a trade war. The conciliatory atmosphere did not last, however, because late on Thursday Trump said he had asked Lighthizer to consider imposing tariffs on another $100bn of Chinese imports. Beijing responded by saying it would fight the US “at any cost”.

For now, this is still a cold trade war. Neither side has yet imposed its threatened tariffs, and there is plenty of time for a negotiated settlement. What ought to happen is simple.

China should recognise that there is some merit in Trump’s argument. US firms have essentially been forced to cede intellectual property rights to gain access to the big and growing Chinese market. If Beijing announced an end to that practice, Trump could remove his threat of tariffs and both sides could then disarm.

But the White House needs to create the conditions under which Beijing can do this. China is the world’s second biggest economy and an emerging superpower. It demands to be treated as an equal rather than as a developing country that has no option but to do Washington’s bidding.

In a tit-for-tat tariff war, the Chinese would come off worse – because they export more to the US than they import. But Beijing has other weapons, including its massive holding of US Treasury bills. Any move to dump these government bonds would be mutually assured destruction with a vengeance. But that’s the danger with cold wars: in the wrong hands, they can turn hot. (afp)

Richest 1% on target to own two-thirds of all wealth by 2030

World leaders are being warned that the continued accumulation of wealth at the top will fuel growing distrust and anger over the coming decade unless action is taken to restore the balance.

An alarming projection produced by the House of Commons library suggests that if trends seen since the 2008 financial crash were to continue, then the top 1% will hold 64% of the world’s wealth by 2030. Even taking the financial crash into account, and measuring their assets over a longer period, they would still hold more than half of all wealth.

Since 2008, the wealth of the richest 1% has been growing at an average of 6% a year – much faster than the 3% growth in wealth of the remaining 99% of the world’s population. Should that continue, the top 1% would hold wealth equating to $305tn (£216.5tn) – up from $140tn today.

Analysts suggest wealth has become concentrated at the top because of recent income inequality, higher rates of saving among the wealthy, and the accumulation of assets. The wealthy also invested a large amount of equity in businesses, stocks and other financial assets, which have handed them disproportionate benefits.

New polling by Opinium suggests that voters perceive a major problem with the influence exerted by the very wealthy. Asked to select a group that would have the most power in 2030, most (34%) said the super-rich, while 28% opted for national governments.

In a sign of falling levels of trust, those surveyed said they feared the consequences of wealth inequality would be

rising levels of corruption (41%) or the “super-rich enjoying unfair influence on government policy” (43%).

The research was commissioned by Liam Byrne, the former Labour cabinet minister, as part of a gathering of MPs, academics, business leaders, trade unions and civil society leaders focused on addressing the problem. The actor Michael Sheen, who has opted to scale back his Hollywood career to campaign against high-interest credit providers, was among those supporting the calls.

The hope is to create pressure for global action when leaders of the G20 group of nations gather for a summit in Buenos Aires in November. Byrne, who organised the first OECD global parliamentary conference on inclusive growth, said he believed global inequality was “now at a tipping point”.

“If we don’t take steps to rewrite the rules of how our economies work, then we condemn ourselves to a future that remains unequal for good,” he said. “That’s morally bad, and economically disastrous, risking a new explosion in instability, corruption and poverty.”

In a sign of the concern about the accumulation of wealth in the hands of so few, the move has gained support from across the political divide.

George Freeman, the Tory MP and former head of the prime minister’s policy board, said: “While mankind has never

seen such income inequality, it is also true that mankind has never experienced such rapid increases in living standards. Around the world billions of people are being lifted out of poverty at a pace never seen before.

But the extraordinary concentration of global wealth today – fuelled by the pace of technological innovation and globalisation – poses serious challenges.

“If the system of capitalist liberal democracy which has triumphed in the west is to pass the big test of globalisation – and the assault from radical Islam as well as its own internal pressures from post-crash austerity – we need some new thinking on ways to widen opportunity, share ownership and philanthropy. Fast.”

Demands for action from the group include improving productivity to ensure wages rise and reform of capital markets to promote greater equality.

Danny Dorling, professor of geography at the University of Oxford, said the scenario in which the super-rich accumulated even more wealth by 2030 was a realistic one.

“Even if the income of the wealthiest people in the world stops rising dramatically in the future, their wealth will still grow for some time,” he said.

“The last peak of income inequality was in 1913. We are near that again, but even if we reduce inequality now it will continue to grow for one to two more decades.” (afp)

An old gamelan instrument called Caruk made its first appearance at the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) this year. The Caruk gamelan troupe from Pau Village, Banjarangkan performed music that is rarely heard, on the Amgsoka stage of the Denpsar Art Center. “The caruk gamelan instrument is estimated to have originated in the fifteenth century and this is the fifth generation of this particular gamelan troupe” explained art coordinator of Pau customary village, Nengah Sukirta. Pau Village and Tangkas Village are the only places in Klungkung where caruk gamlean can be found, said Sukirta adding that they are only played for Deva Yajna and Pitri Yajna religious cermonies.

“For Pitri Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played during the cremation ceremony during menek tumpang salu, menek bea and mapurwadaksina rites that culminate in the nyekah ritual. For Dewa Yajna rituals, caruk gamelan is played dur-

ing the mamungkah rite. It is played at the peak of the ritual when the deities circle the offerings clockwise –known as murwa daksina” he elaborated.

Caruk gamelan consists of two small xylophones and one saron that are always played together. “We also have an extra player so for the BAF performance there were four musi-

cians” he Suendra. Suendra added that nine different caruk gamelan compositions were handed down by the ancestors, however because the palm-leaf manuscripts on which they were written are hard to read, only five of the compositions are played. All five were performed at this year’s BAF: the Tabuh Ririgan, Tabuh Rejang, Tabuh Ombak Segara, Tabuh Panji Marga and Tabuh Manu Kaba.

“For a very long time only five of the compositions can be played because of the difficulty in reading

the lontars, but we are determined to find a way to read the others so that we can perform them in next year’s BAF”, explained Suendra.

Currently, there are only four people in Pau customary village who are actively involved playing gamelan so Suendra is eager to encourage younger people to learn to play. “The notation for caruk gamelan music is different than other gamelan so it is harder to learn. It takes many years to master. After the BAF we will start to teach young children, which may take even longer”, he said. (kmb)

Kendang Mebarung or drum competition as one of the arts originating in Jembrana should still be preserved to the posterity. In each performance, the art troupe is expected to play in compliance with the existing pattern. On that account, this art can be maintained through generations. It is emphasized to a number of sacred art troupes during the recent coaching held by the office of the Jembrana Religious Affairs, Sunday (Jun. 5) at meeting hall of Dangin Tukadaya village. This village has a Kendang Mebarung art troupe with the member of 25 people.

Side job as porter in Galiran Market to compensate farming income GALIRAN Market in Klungkung has been the center for the economy of the community since long time ago. Here, people do not only do buying and selling activities. However, there are also activities for some people to earn a fortune as market porter. They take advantage of this opportunity to earn rupiah as additional income for working as farm laborers and others.

The market has been famous since long time ago, not only in Klungkung district but also in other regions. Located at Semarapura Klod village, this market can be said to be the center for Eastern Bali trade. Various types of goods are sold here starting from ritual paraphernalia, vegetables to fruits.

They are supplied from a number of regions in Bali. Every day, thousands of people come here to transact. The crowd is not only seen from the morning to evening. When a number of merchants have closed, by the evening dozens of collectors of various types of commodities come in. By using a pickup truck, they crowd the parking lot and noisy atmosphere is inevitable.

Apparently, looking for a gap to walk is quite difficult let alone be driving a car.

From the top of the car, a number of collectors hawk their goods.

Other peddlers are also dropping their goods and putting them in the remaining places. This adds to the busy impression. In one of the cars, a collector is seen noting her sales. Amid the situation, some residents are also busy pushing carts containing various types of vegetables such as tomatoes, green vegetables and long beans. They push it with quick steps to the wholesale lot on the eastern side.

It is done repeatedly and pouring sweat is inevitable. They look tired.

Occasionally, it is just removed with the arm. Take a break. Not long after, they move again.

They are not buyers but only a porter. Of the existing porters, Kadek Apel is one of them. This man from Cegeng hamlet, Kerta Bhuana village, Sidemen subdistrict, admitted that he has been doing the work for several years.

The need for money to support his family is the cause. He comes to the market at 17:00 and come back home around 22:00. From such work, at least he can earn IDR 50,000. “This is the wage given per basket,” he said on Thursday night (Apr. 5).

Relying on life is not just to such work. From the morning to noon, he spends time as a farmer. The results are not much and often uncertain. Though being heavy, he is still grateful. He considered it more fortunate than others who have trouble in finding work. “Many people do this kind of work from the same village, reaching dozens of people,” he added.

Similar profession is also pursued by another Sidemen resident, Ni Nengah Wali. Instead, she works longer namely from 17:00 to 02:00 in the morning. Her efforts are directly proportional to the income.

The wages she earns can reach IDR 200,000. “She used to be a farm worker and maximally earns IDR 50,000 per day. The current work is better and the wage is bigger,” she said.

While dropping long beans, this woman who has not had a child told briefly at the beginning of working as a market porter. Several times she got sick due to frequent working overnight. Moreover, she should consult to a doctor. However, after a long time, she got recovered. “This work has been running for only a year,” she said. (sos)

Japan launches Marines unit amid China’s growing presence

TOKYO - Japan’s military on Saturday launched its first Marines unit, tasked with defending remote islands in the face of China’s growing maritime presence in the region.

However, the cases of domestic violence still occur.

cases trigger domestic violence,” she said.

In addition to these problems, family economic condition also often triggers domestic violence.

Miscommunication and parenting are also factors causing domestic violence. “What has been seen is quite a lot, while more people may be hiding their domestic violence cases because the character of our society is more reluctant to reveal its own shame. Therefore, they will not report the cases,” said Anggreni.

A tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft: Japan’s new Marine unit will be equipped with them.

The Self-Defence Forces’ amphibious fighting unit staged an exercise with US Marines at Sasebo in western Japan following the inauguration ceremony.

The 2,100-member brigade, based in Sasebo, will be responsible for defending remote islands and retaking them if they are invaded.

“Defending remote islands is a pressing task at a time when security surrounding our country is getting more severe,” vice defence minister Tomohiro Yamamoto told the ceremony.

Japan has a longstanding dispute with China over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. These are administered by Japan, which calls them the “Senkakus”, but also claimed by China, which knows them as the “Diaoyus.”

Chinese coastguard vessels have routinely travelled close to the disputed islands since relations worsened in 2012, when Tokyo’s government took over some of them.

The new amphibious operations unit is expected to grow into a 3,000-member force, using V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and amphibious assault vehicles for storming beaches, Kyodo News said.

Japan had long been reluctant to create an amphibious fighting unit in light of its pacifist constitution, which bans the country from using force to settle international disputes. (afp)

Dozens reported killed in suspected Syria gas attack; Damascus denies BEIRUT - A chemical attack on a rebelheld town in eastern Ghouta killed dozens of people, a medical relief organization and a rescue service said, and Washington said the reports - if confirmed - would demand an immediate international response.

A joint statement by the medical relief organization Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and the civil defense, which operates in rebel-held areas, said 49 people had died.

The Russian-backed Syrian state denied government forces had launched any chemical attack as reports began circulating on Saturday night. The government said rebels in the eastern Ghouta town of Douma were collapsing and spreading false news.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports. The lifeless bodies of around a dozen children, women and men, some of them with foam at the mouth, were shown in one video circulated by activists. “Douma city, April 7 ... there is a strong smell here,” a voice can be heard saying.

The U.S. State Department said reports of mass casualties from an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma were “horrifying” and would, if confirmed, “demand an immediate response by the international community”.

President Bashar al-Assad has won back control of nearly all of eastern Ghouta in a Russian-backed military campaign that began in February, leaving just Douma in rebel hands. After a lull of a few days, government forces began bombarding Douma again on Friday.

The offensive in Ghouta has been one of the deadliest of the seven-year-long war, killing more than 1,600 civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory said it could not confirm whether chemical weapons had been used in the attack on Saturday. Observatory Director Rami Abdulrahman said 11 people had died in Douma as a result of suffocation caused by the smoke from conventional weapons being dropped by the government. It said a total of 70 people suffered breathing difficulties.

Medical relief organization SAMS said a chlorine bomb hit Douma hospital, killing six people, and a second attack with “mixed agents” including nerve agents had hit a nearby building.

Basel Termanini, the U.S.-based vice president of SAMS, told Reuters another 35 people had been killed at the nearby apartment building, most of them women and children. SAMS operates 139 medical facilities in Syria where it supports 1,880 medical personnel, according to its website.

“We are contacting the U.N. and the U.S. government and the European governments,” he said by telephone.

The joint statement from SAMS and the civil defense said medical centers had received more than 500 cases of people suffering breathing difficulties, frothing from the mouth and smelling of chlorine.

One of the victims was dead on arrival, and six died later, it said. Civil defense volunteers reported more than 42 cases of people dead at their homes showing the same symptoms, it said.

Syrian state news agency SANA said the rebel group in Douma, Jaish al-Islam, was making “chemical attack fabrications in an exposed and failed attempt to obstruct advances by the Syrian Arab army,” citing an official source.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauret recalled a 2017 sarin gas attack in northwestern Syria that the West and the United Nations blamed on Assad’s government.

“The Assad regime and its backers must be held accountable and any further attacks prevented immediately,” she said.

“The United States calls on Russia to end this unmitigated support immediately and work with the international community to prevent further, barbaric chemical weapons attacks,” Nauert said in a statement.

The Syrian government has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons during the conflict. (net)

Govt urged to maximize clean water service at three villages

SEMARAPURA — Difficulty to get clean water faced by a number of villages in Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung district, gets the highlight from the legislative.

Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the Klungkung House of Representatives, Gede Gita Gunawan, encouraged the government to give maximum attention. Moreover, the archipelago plays an important role in supporting tourism of Klungkung as well as Bali.

“Clean water needs has been handled by the government. However, until now it has not reached the whole villages, especially those having tourism potential. This needs a balanced step between tourism, infrastructure and water,” he said on Friday (Apr. 6).

To meet the needs of the toilets, the government has utilized the Guyangan and Penida water sources. However, both springs have not been able to resolve the existing problems. Seeing such condition, there should be short-term handling efforts, where one of them is by adding the intensity of water delivery by the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM). “If for example we make reservoir in some locations, it seems that we think backwards.

The water is not utilized properly.

It’s better to do delivery services on a regular basis, directly channeling the water to settlements,” said this Golkar politician.

It is ready to deliver clean water if there is a request from the public.

As reported previously, the difficulty of clean water is faced by Pudukutan, Tanglad and Sekartaji village. The condition having going on for years has not been handled to the fullest. On that account, one hundred percent program of clean water services targeted by central government to be realized in 2019 is threatened. In addition, it hampers physical development of the community, one of which is the tourist accommodation.

Head of the Klungkung Public Works Agency, I Gusti Nyoman Supartana, said the plan of continued handling by utilizing Guyangan and Penida water sources has not got signal from provincial government, while the existing program is only the construction of well by district government.

DENPASAR — Who does not know Ubud?

This tourism village is famous in Indonesia even in the world. Before the independence of Indonesia, around the decades of 1920-1930 Ubud has been visited by people from various countries. There were painters, sculpture artists, archaeologists, statesmen, actors and actress from all over the world. Their arrival was greeted with Balinese food.

The owner of Casa Luna Restaurant, I Ketut Suardana, 60, also witnessed the history on the development of Ubud. He said that Ubud community, especially royal family, at that time presented Balinese food as the serving to special guests.

After the independence, around the 1960s, tourists started coming. They came with new ideas, especially in terms of food. “They brought tacos, Indian food and yoghurt, and these were adopted by food stalls and developed into a restaurant,” he said. The food of Ubud in the 1967s becomes the milestone of culinary development in the Ubud area.

In the 1980s, Ubud began to change. Aside from the emergence of new foods, there were also the arrangements of tourist supporting facilities including the appearance of restaurants. At that time, there were 5 to 10 restaurants emerging. “In the 1990s, the number of restaurants in Ubud could still be counted on fingers,” he said.

After the 2000s, the restaurant in Ubud began mushrooming. “Now, perhaps there have been approximately 600 restaurants,” he added. He tried to remember the first restaurant established in Ubud. They are Murni’s Restaurant, Okawati and Candri. The restaurants are owned by local residents.

“Murni’s restaurant is owned by foreigner but married with local resident,” he said. His restaurant, Casa Luna, was established in the 1990s. Meanwhile, the Balinese menus that began to be introduced to foreigners include mixed rice, roasted suckling pig and steamed chicken.

The existence of homestay in Ubud helped boost the development of restaurant in the vicinity. Guests staying in homestay will find lunch or dinner so they stop by the restaurants. Later, the homestays also started serving simple menus such as toast, salad, et cetera.

Gradually, food trends are also developing in Ubud.

Ubud is synonymous with spiritual tourism developing healthy food, such as vegetarian food. This healthy food is estimated to have been famous in the 1990s until the 2000s although currently the healthy food is still popular among some circles.

Furthermore, coffee began to be popular especially among young people. Coffee shops have sprung up, not only in Ubud but also in Denpasar and the other parts of Bali.

Currently, he said the trend of food favored by visitors is spicy food with several levels. On that account, the challenge of eating spicy food with a certain level becomes the main attraction.

An observer of culinary tourism, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra said the development of Ubud tourism has made Ubud into a culinary destination. It is proved by the crowds and the bestselling of some local foods in Ubud which incidentally serves Balinese food. For instance, chicken rice of Kedewatan becomes the icon of Ubud.

There are also roasted suckling pig of Bu Oka, Dirty Duck and Bebek Tepi Sawah. “There is no area as rich as Ubud in Bali visited for culinary purposes,” he said.

Ubud does not only show off the development of Balinese food, but also restaurants that become a tourist destination because of its expensive price. “Moreover, the most expensive restaurant in the world is in Ubud. It is called upscale or fine dining restaurant. For example, there are Swept Away, Locavore and Mosaic. In Sanur, there is only one or two but there are many in Ubud,” he said.

Culinary tourism has become a new attribute to Ubud destination as in the book he has written entitled the Wisata Kuliner, Atribut Baru Destinasi Ubud (literally, Culinary Tourism, the New Attribute to Ubud Destination). In the book, he writes that cuisines provide a new attraction for Ubud.

Originally, Ubud was a cultural tourist destination.

Formerly, Ubud was famous for its fine arts, and then performing arts, but now it has shifted. “Today, they remain to exist, but then comes culinary tourism that gives new attraction,” he added.

Child rehabilitation safe house urgently needed in Denpasar

DENPASAR - Legal cases involving children are getting more and more. The efforts to rehabilitate victims as well as child perpetrators need a representative place. One of them is the existence of safe house. Until now, the districts and municipality in Bali do not yet have a safe house. Therefore, if there are children needing to get handled at safe house is quite difficult and even has to leave them to Lombok.

Chief Executive Officer of the Integrated Service Center for Women and Children Empowerment (P2TP2A) of Denpasar, Luh Putu Anggreni, said in her office on Friday (Apr. 6) that the safe house is very important to provide adequate place for children involved in legal cases. Currently, it is difficult for her if there are children that must be rehabilitated because there is no safe house that can accommodate them.

He said if any children to be entrusted, her center often entrusts them to one of the orphanages in Tabanan. However, the obstacles will arise in the fulfillment of daily needs, such as food as the orphanage does not have a lot of budget. In addition, her center also had left to Lombok because Lombok has already established as safe house center.

Anggreni said that all parties should take care of child protection. There is no reason that can be a justification when dealing with children involved in sexual cases. All parties should avoid legal contact with children because the threat of punishment is quite severe. Various efforts have been made to minimize child cases. One of them is by establishing a Child Protection Taskforce.

out this action as part of a series of Badung`s commitments to help in the success of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting 2018, which will be held in October this year,” said Putu Eka Merthawan, head of Badung`s Environment and Hygiene office.

Putu further said that some

4,000 volunteers involved in the cleaning of the garbage including civil servants, personnel of the military and police, and senior high school students, adding that the activity was entitled “Kuta Beach clean without plastic waste”.

According to Putu, the garbage cleaning also reflected the spirit of

Badung community in welcoming the International Monetary FundWorld Bank Annual Meeting, which will take place in the Nusa Dua area.

Putu Eka Merthawan also said that the garbage cleanup filled 10 trucks with 20 tons of garbage, dominated by plastic waste. “We

Underwood herself had told fans that she “might look a bit different” following the accident, which she said resulted in a whopping 40 to 50 stitches to her face, so it stands to reason there’d be speculation that she was still trying to hide her scars.

On Friday, Underwood quieted those rumors by finally posting a photo that revealed her entire face while she was rehearsing in the studio with her band.

It’s not a close-up shot. Still, even without zooming in, she appears pretty much the same as pre-accident, with no scarring to be seen. Whether this can be credited to makeup or talented plastic surgery (or perhaps just time and TLC) remains unknown.

What also remains unknown is why exactly she’s rehearsing, with no immediate live dates on her calendar. A likely guess is that she will be making an appearance at the April 15 Academy of Country Music Awards, where she is nominated in two categories, including Female Vocalist of the Year. If this is the case, fans will likely be hungry for news of a new album as well, since she has been posting shots of her time in the studio.

Underwood has also hinted that

she might have some “surprises” up her sleeve in conjunction with husband Mike Fisher’s NHL team, the Nashville Predators, at whose games she has performed in the past.

Regardless of her motives, it’s good to see the singer looking happy and healthy again. Since her November accident, in which she also broke her wrist, Underwood had slowed down considerably on social media, only posting photos of herself that obscure her face with strategic poses, scarves, or other accessories. Germany still clueless about motive for fatal van attack

Prosecutors said Sunday they still have no indication why a 48-year-old German man drove a van into a crowd of people in the western German city of Muenster, killing two and injuring 20 before shooting himself to death inside the van. “As of now, we don’t have any leads regarding a possible background for the deed,” prosecutor Martin Botzenhardt wrote in a joint statement with police. “The investigations are being led under high pressure in all possible directions.”

A car drove into a group of people in the western German city of Muenster

Authorities have identified the two fatalities of Saturday’s crash as a 51-year-old woman from Lueneburg County and a 65-year-old man from Broken County. Their names weren’t given as is customary in Germany.

Local media have identified the perpetrator as an industrial designer living in Muenster who had been suffering from psychological problems, but police wouldn’t confirm those details. All three bodies were taken from the crash scene in front of the well-known Kiepenkerl pub early Sunday night. The silvergrey van was hauled away hours

later, after explosives experts had thoroughly checked it.

“The van is not at the crime scene anymore, all kinds of objects have also been removed, waste of course, as well as evidence that we’ve found on the ground,” police spokeswoman Susanne Dirkorte told The Associated Press.

Inside the van, police found illegal firecrackers which were disguised as a fake bomb, a fake pistol and the gun that the perpetrator used to kill himself. Inside the man’s apartment, which was nearby the crash scene and raided late Saturday, police found more

firecrackers and a “no longer usable AK-47 machine gun.”

Police said some of the 20 injured persons were still in lifethreatening condition, but did not release further details on their identities.
