Kevin Spacey due in court over sex assault claims

NEW YORK - Actor Kevin Spacey was due in court Monday to appear before a judge on the tony destination island of Nantucket, Massachusetts over accusations he sexually assaulted a teenager in 2016.

The “House of Cards” star had asked that his lawyers represent him at the hearing, but Judge Thomas Barrett declined, forcing Spacey to appear before him at 11:00 am (1600 GMT). he formal charges come more than 13 months after the complaint was filed, and is part of the latest chapter in the #MeToo movement after the sentencing of actor Bill Cosby and the indictment against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Some modern stores stop using plastic bags Head of the Tabanan Environment Agency, A.A Raka Icwara, explained that he had inspected several modern stores such as Alfamart, Indomaret and Minimarket around Tabanan. He also visited KFC located on Jalan Bypass Soekarno. “Indomaret has no longer used plastic bag. But it sells bags worth IDR 5,000. Some buyers have already bought and used these bags,” said Raka.

Meanwhile, Alfamart is still using a plastic bag and in the future will apply the same thing as Indomaret. “KFC and Minimarket are going to spend existing plastic bags. After that they will not provide plastic bags if there are buyers shopping,” explained Raka.

Sidestepping trade war, Musk breaks ground on Tesla Shanghai plant

SHANGHAI - Tesla boss Elon Musk presided Monday over the ground-breaking for a Shanghai factory that will allow the electriccar manufacturer to dodge the China-US tariff crossfire and sell directly to the world’s biggest market for “green” vehicles.

The plant in a Shanghai suburb is Musk’s biggest overseas move yet and will eventually have an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles, Tesla says, dramatically increasing the California-based company’s output.

“China is becoming the global leader in electric vehicle adoption, and it is a market that is critical to Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” Musk said, according to a statement released by the manufacturer.

Musk had hinted recently at an upcoming Shanghai trip to break ground for the plant but Monday’s event was not publicly announced until the Tesla CEO broke the news in a series of tweets earlier in the day.

In typically iconoclastic style, the 47-year-old Musk changed his Twitter profile picture around the time of the ceremony to one showing his face with an exaggerated handlebar moustache drawn on it.

The Shanghai government later posted photos on social media showing Musk and officials from Tesla and the city on a large stage at a launch ceremony at the site, located on Shanghai’s distant outskirts.

No investment figures were given but the cost of the project has been estimated by analysts at up to $5 billion.

The Shanghai venture comes as US companies face pressure from President Donald Trump to keep manufacturing jobs at home, and as Beijing and Washington wage a trade spat that has seen both sides levy tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of products.

Analysts say production in China would allow Tesla to side-step such measures, which have already

caused a spike in the price of the cars the company now imports to the Chinese market.

But construction of the plant -- the subject of stopstart negotiations between Tesla and Shanghai for well over a year -- gets under way just as the outlook for China’s consumer market has turned worrisome.

Apple sparked global alarm over the prospects for the world’s second-largest economy last week when it cut its revenue forecast, citing slowing demand in China and the trade war.

Domestic and foreign automakers have been racing to grab shares of China’s electric-vehicle sector -- already the world’s biggest and expected to continue to grow as the Chinese government pushes clean technologies.

But the pace of growth is expected to slow along with China’s economy.

The Shanghai factory will be Tesla’s first production line outside the United States.

Musk tweeted earlier Monday that Tesla was “aiming to finish initial construction this summer, start Model 3 production end of year & reach high-volume production next year”.

The Shanghai plant would supply the “Greater China region” with “affordable versions” of the Tesla Model 3 -- the carmaker’s first mid-price, mass-market vehicle -- and its planned Model Y, Musk tweeted.

The Model S, Model X and “higher cost versions” of the 3 and Y would continue to be made in the United States for the global market, including China, he added.

Despite its relative affordability compared to other Tesla models, the price of a US-made Model 3 now starts at about $50,000, but Musk has said he aims to get that down to $35,000. He provided no price figures for China-made cars.

China typically requires foreign automakers to forge joint ventures with domestic firms when establishing manufacturing plants, which means sharing profits and technology with local partners.

LAS VEGAS - The robot breadmaker came to Las Vegas this week, aiming to bring some freshness to a sector that may be ready for disruption.

Wilkinson Baking Company unveiled its BreadBot at the Consumer Electronics Show, a machine that mixes and bakes up to 235 loaves a day.

Chief executive Randall Wilkinson said the device can lower costs and produce fresher breads than are available in most American supermarkets.

“Consumers want the freshest thing possible, but when they go into the store they don’t know when that bread was baked,” said Wilkinson, a member of the family-owned firm in Walla Walla, Washington.

Wilkinson said the machine, which takes up as much room as a mid-sized car, has more automation technology than bread factories, and can produce at a far lower cost.

He noted that using in-store robotic machines could eliminate

the need for truck delivery, which accounts for as much as 45 percent of the cost of most bread.

This means profits could get a rise.

The company is in talks with major supermarket chains and also plans to deliver the robots to the US military for making buns on carrier fleets, Wilkinson said.

The bread robot -- which was at a startup showcase Sunday and will be on the show floor from Tuesday -- joins a line of devices aimed at disrupting the food industry, including pizza-making robots and robotic baristas.

The current generation of BreadBot is designed for standard kinds of loaves but Wilkinson said the robots can be adapted for customized breads, even French baguettes.

“At some point you will be able to order a special loaf on your phone -- you can add sunflower seeds, use less salt or whatever -- and pick it up in an hour,” he said. (afp)

Not the other way around, tourism moves forward quickly and leaves the farm behind. If this condition occurs, it means that tourism and agriculture are separate life. In other words, the tourism marginalizes agriculture. Certainly this may not happen.

Therefore, tourism and agriculture must go hand in hand and be empowered and synergized as a strategy in building the economy of Bali in order to improve the welfare of the community, especially farmers, fishermen, players and activists of local industry in Bali.

“Therefore, the Bali provincial government issued a strategic policy in the form of Gubernatorial Regulation No. 99/2018 concerning the marketing and utilization of local agricultural, fisheries and industrial products of Bali consist-

ing of 14 chapters and 30 articles,” said Koster.

He explained the implementation of the gubernatorial regulation aims to provide certainty and continuity in the marketing and utilization of local agricultural, fishery and industrial products of Bali, provide assurance of selling prices as well as regulate trade systems that favor Balinese people, increase the quantity, quality and continuity of production, increase employment, economic growth and improve people’s welfare. The types of products regulated are agricultural products including food crops, horticulture, plantations and fisheries; fishery products; and local industries in Bali including food, textile, and various industries.

In this regulation, the governor requires supermarkets to buy and sell food, horticulture and plantation and fishery product at least 60 percent of the total volume of products marketed. In addition, there are also local Bali food products and local Bali industries at least 30 percent of the total volume of the products marketed.

In running the business activities, every hotel, restaurant and catering company is also required to prioritize the utilization of food crop, horticulture and plantation products at least 30 percent of the volume of products needed; at least 30 percent of livestock products for hotel and restaurant needs; and at least 10 percent for the needs of the processing / meat processing industry. This determination must be interpreted as a commitment and collective responsibility that the presence of entrepreneurs and economic players running business activities in Bali should not be solely to gain corporate profits, but also partly give dedication to building Bali for Balinese people’s welfare and happiness,” he said.

He added that to ensure the marketing and utilization of Bali local agricultural, fishery and industrial products to run well, the provincial government will provide guidance and supervision by establishing a team whose members are the elements of vertical agencies, provincial and district / municipal authorities, academician and associations. As scheduled, the land owner will

return to Singaraja this February 2019,” he explained.

According to Suparta Wijaya, the land acquisition committee then sent a compensation fund for the land to the Singaraja District Court by consignment. In accordance with the calculation results of the appraisal team, the value of the land compensation is IDR 477 million.

Because one year has passed, the budget allocated a year ago was returned to the Regional Treasury

TOKYO - A Japanese tabloid magazine apologised Tuesday for an article ranking women’s universities on how easy it is to convince students to have sex at drinking parties.

The list appeared in the December 25 issue of the weekly magazine “Spa!” and prompted outrage, particularly online where one woman launched a campaign seeking an apology and suspension of sales of the offending issue.

Her petition on the change. org platform accused the article of “sexualising, objectifying and disrespecting women” and had collected support from more than 28,000 people by Tuesday.

“We would like to apologise for using sensational language to appeal to readers about how they can become intimate with women and for creating a ranking... with real university names... that resulted in

a feature that may have offended readers,” the magazine’s editorial department said in a statement obtained by AFP. The article was about a practice the magazine described as “gyaranomi” or drinking parties that male participants pay women to attend.

It said the parties are popular among female college students and interviewed the developer of an app intended to help men and women find potential attendees.

The magazine said its list was based on information from its interview with the developer.

“On issues that involve sex, we will do what we can as a magazine to listen to various opinions,” the

statement said.

There was no indication that the offending issue would be taken off the shelves. Japan ranks bottom of the G7 countries on female representation in politics and business, and campaigns like the #MeToo movement have struggled to take off in the country.

Last year, a leading medical university admitted it had routinely lowered the scores of female applicants to keep the number of women in the student body at around 30 percent.

MEXICO CITY — President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador launched an ambitious plan Saturday to stimulate economic activity on the Mexican side of the U.S.Mexico border, reinforcing his country’s commitment to manufacturing and trade despite recent U.S. threats to close the border entirely.

Mexico will slash income and corporate taxes to 20 percent from 30 percent for 43 municipalities in six states just south of the U.S., while halving to 8 percent the value-added tax in the region.

Business leaders and union representatives have also agreed to double the minimum wage along the border, to 176.2 pesos a day, the equivalent of $9.07 at current exchange rates.

Lopez Obrador, who took office on Dec. 1, said the idea is to stoke wage and job growth via fiscal incentives and productivity gains.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained that low wages in Mexico lure jobs from the U.S. Mexico committed to boost wages during last year’s negotiations to retool its free trade agreement with the U.S. and Canada.

Speaking from Ciudad Juarez, a manufacturing hub south of El Paso, Texas, Lopez Obrador said Saturday he agrees with Trump that Mexican wages “should improve.”

Apple is not among the exhibitors at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, but that didn’t prevent the iPhone maker from sending a message to attendees on a large billboard.

“What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone,” Apple says in the message to be seen by tens of

thousands attending the Las Vegas tech show.

The message comes as gadget makers are concerned about data protection scandals and in many cases looking to make their own point about respect for privacy.

Some companies are offering better ways of protecting internet

routers or services without a need for an internet connection -- reducing the potential for data leaks and breaches. Dutch startup Scalys is showing its Trustbox, a router that aims to protect the user’s connection as well as devices using it.

Another router from Chicago-based Winston stops tracking and surveil-

lance and can also block ads and geolocation.

The data scandals “are like Christmas presents for us,” by prompting more consumers to look for better security, said Winston founder Richard Stokes.

“As we see more things being connected I think that you’ll

definitely hear people talk about security more and really looking at how would you secure the data,” said analyst Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies.

Various unique and interesting traditions can be found in North Bali. One of them is a tradition characterized by vivacious heroism remaining to exist in the community until these days.

The ‘War of Rattan’ or better known as gebug ende can be found at Patas village, Gerokgak subdistrict. Actually, this tradition comes from the lava land (nickname of Karangasem, precisely from Seraya village).

By and large, this tradition is played when dry season arrives. At that time, people of Seraya have a religious cultural tradition to beg for rain. This tradition is played by two men, where the player hits each other with a rattan whip of two meters long. It is accompanied with a piece of shield with a diameter of 60 cm made of dry cowhide tied to wooden frame. Other than the players, in the arena of the game there are also two people serving as referee or pakembar.

Even though their body is hit by rattan, they are still happy and dance with joy. Meanwhile, the sound of the baleganjur gamelan music is played as a companion to heat up the atmosphere of “the war.” At the same time, the audience keeps cheering to give support to the one on one fight.

This gebug ende attraction is generally performed on the side-

lines of breaks in the fields at noon or evening. It is commonly held prior to the planting season in the field.

A coach of gebug ende for children Wayan Nadi said that during dry season the tradition is held to appeal to God in order to bring down a rain. “This tradition is habitually held during dry seasons. If the rain late long in the season, gebug ende will be held. Originally this tradition comes from the Seraya village, Karangasem,” he said.

A senior figure of Patas village, Ketut Koroh, said that if one of the players bleeds due to the blow of rattan stick, there is a possibility to rain. In short, according to the belief of Seraya people, the gebug game is held at this village to appeal to God for rain for the sake of agricultural purposes.

Apparently this tradition is not just to beg for rain. “If something bad happens, this gebug tradition

can be held. For example, there is uncontrollable pest attack, this gebug is the repellent. After holding the gebug, by degrees the bad things will disappear and be back to normal as before. Whatever bad things are, if neutralized by this gebug game then it will certainly be destroyed. It is according to public belief,” he said.

This attraction usually takes place in public places by inviting opponents at the village. Gebug game is played by two small children, adults and parents. Amid the current advancement of technology, the gebug tradition having existed in the Bali Aga era is already almost extinct. So, we as the heir of the culture should duly boast and preserve its existence.

Encouraged by the intention to manage less productive paddy fields, Wayan Dika, a farmer from Marga, successfully establishes an agrotourism drawing visitors from Tabanan and outside Tabanan. His paddy fields are often dry during dry season so they cannot be planted. Ultimately, it was transformed into a sunflower garden becoming an appropriate place to take pictures or just recreation.

This resident of Batannyuh hamlet, Belayu, Marga, Tabanan, stated that originally the making of the agrotourism was driven by his intention to cultivate his family’s unproductive paddy fields when entering dry season. “Every dry season, it cannot be planted with rice because there is not enough water. So, it can only be planted with rice during rainy season,” he said not long ago.

Originally he did not think about opening an agrotourism but aimed to plant the land with cut flowers so that the harvest yield can be sold to hotels. One of his friends suggested planting sunflowers. When planting the sunflowers in the area of ??1,000 square meters, Dika claimed to learn much from social media. And he started the cultivation four months ago.

Unexpectedly, this effort draws many people to come. Moreover, when looking at the overlay of sunflowers growing and starting to bloom makes it suitable into a selfie spot. Through social media, the sunflower park has become well known and crowded with visitors.

”Actually I have not dared to open agrotourism, but since it has been at issue on social media and many visitors come, I finally decided to make it a tourist destination,” he explained. At the moment, Dika and his friends are managing this agrotourism.

He continued that visitors to the sunflower garden are mostly younger generation who come from Badung, Denpasar to Jembrana. On average, there are 250-500 visitors each day. He said that other than wishing to see the beauty of sunflowers, many visitors also came to only capture images of blooming sunflowers in an area of ??1,000 square meters or take selfie with sunflower plants. “This garden spreads across the area of 1,000 square meters. Eighty percent of the land is planted with flowers while the remaining is planned for facilities,” he said.

The price of admission ticket to this agrotourism is only set at IDR 5,000 per person. Result of the ticket sales are used for flower garden maintenance and preparation of facilities. Currently, he is preparing an entrance gate, toilet and ticket counter. In the future, Dika planned to expand its agrotourism land. “There is an additional area of ??3,500 square meters. We are not only going to plant sunflowers, but also other types such as chrysanthemum, tuberose and marigold.

Attacker wounds 20 children at Beijing school BEIJING - Twenty children were wounded in an attack at an elementary school in Beijing Tuesday with three suffering serious injuries, local authorities said, as state-run media reported that the assailant used a hammer.

A male suspect was brought “under control” and the wounded pupils were admitted to hospital, the Xicheng district government said, without elaborating on how or why the man carried out the attack.

According to a tweet by state-run tabloid Global Times, the suspect used a hammer to carry out the assault.

Beijing police did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.

Violent attacks targeting schoolchildren are not uncommon in China, which has seen a slew of deadly incidents over the past few years, usually involving knives.

In April last year, a 28-year-old man killed nine middle-school students as they were returning home in one of the country’s deadliest knife attacks in recent years.

The killer, who said he had been bullied when he attended the school in northern China’s Shaanxi province, was executed in September.

Later in 2018, a knife-wielding woman injured 14 children at a kindergarten in Sichuan province.

The 39-year-old assailant slashed students while they were returning to the classroom after morning exercises.

Bangladesh’s 4,500 textile and clothing factories exported more than $30 billion worth of apparel last year, making clothing for retailers such as H&M, Walmart, Tesco, Carrefour and Aldi.

Police said more than 5,000 workers blocked a national highway at Hemayetpur outside the capital Dhaka and clashed with them for hours after they walked out of their factories.

“At least 12 policemen were injured after they threw rocks at our officers. We fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. Twelve factories were shut down,” police official Sana Shaminur Rahman told AFP. The online edition of the Manabjamin newspaper said at least 50 protesters were injured in waves of clashes, which also spread to garment factory hubs in Dhaka, Ashulia and Uttara involving thousands more workers.

The protests are the first major test for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since winning a fourth term in December 30 elections marred by violence, thousands of arrests and allegations of vote rigging and

intimidation.

Bangladesh raised the minimum monthly wage for the garment sector’s four million workers by 51 percent to 8,000 taka ($95) from December.

But senior workers say their raise was less than this and unions, which warn the strikes may spread, say the hike fails to compensate for price rises in recent years.

“The wages were hiked after five years. But in the five years the cost of living has increased more than the wage hike,” Babul Akhter, head of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, told AFP Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest garment maker after China.

But despite the industry’s role in transforming the impoverished nation into a major manufacturing hub, garment workers are some of the lowest paid in the world.

The industry also has a poor workplace safety record with the collapse of a Rana Plaza garment factory complex killing more than 1,130 people in 2013 in one of the world’s worst industrial disasters.

Following the disaster, major retailers formed two safety groups to push through crucial reforms in the factories, prompting manufacturers to plough in more than a billion dollars in safety upgrades. (afp)

DILI — Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta has urged Indonesia’s government to hold talks with the Papuan independence movement to help end a decades-long insurgency in the country’s easternmost region.

Ramos-Horta, joint recipient of the 1996 Nobel prize for efforts to bring independence and peace to East Timor, which suffered a brutal Indonesian occupation for nearly a quarter century, said he believes the Papua region’s future is within Indonesia, not as a separate state.

“Talk to the Papuans, the OPM (Free Papua Organization), but as brothers of Indonesia,” Ramos-Horta said in an interview last week. “The Papuans, they have to feel that the government, the people in Java, really care about them.”

The conflict between Indonesia and the rebels, who number perhaps just several hundred, flared again last month when armed separatists in Nduga killed at least 17 people working on a trans-Papua highway construction site that’s a key part of President Joko Widodo’s efforts to bring development to the impoverished region.

The government has said accusations that the military fired at villages with white phosphorous projectiles, a banned chemical weapon, in retaliation are “totally baseless, nonfactual and gravely misleading.” At least four people were killed in the security operation. Wiranto, the top security minister, has rejected the idea of talks.

Police have arrested then released hundreds of suspected independence supporters and raided offices of the West Papua National Committee, a civilian group that advocates for self-determination. In Timika, police occupied the committee’s secretariat, graffitied it with slogans such as “Indonesia Forever” and demolished symbols of the independence move-

ment.

Ramos-Horta, East Timor’s president from 2007 to 2012, said restraint is needed on both sides.

“So first, they must give up on armed attacks on Indonesian civilians or military authorities, but at the same time the Indonesian military also have to restrain themselves from not cracking down, attacking ... people every time they demonstrate,” he said.

An independence movement and an armed insurgency have simmered in the formerly Dutch-controlled region since it was annexed by Indonesia in 1963. Indonesian control was formalized in 1969 with a referendum known as the “Act of Free Choice” held in an atmosphere of heavy intimidation in which only 1,026 Papuans were allowed to vote.

Nowadays, indigenous Papuans, largely shut out of their region’s economy, are poorer, sicker and more likely to die young than people elsewhere in Indonesia. Decades of Indonesian military brutality and impunity have contributed to deep resentment of Indonesian rule.

Ramos-Horta, however, said the situation in Papua is not comparable to East Timor’s independence struggle and there’s no role for the U.N. in the conflict.

East Timor, Ramos-Horta said, was a Portuguese colony for more than 400 years before Indonesia invaded in 1975, whereas Papua was part of the Dutch East Indies empire that was the basis for the borders of modern Indonesia.

He believes Widodo, who is seeking a second five-year term in elections due April, is committed to ending the conflict without revising Indonesia’s borders.

“He will make every effort to engage the brothers and sisters in Papua in dialogue to find a resolution for the conflict,” he said. (afp)

At least 32 people were killed by a landslide in Indonesia on New Year’s Eve, authorities said Monday as they ended a week-long search for missing victims.

Rescuers who have been pulling bodies from mountains of mud called off the search with one person still unaccounted for after heavy rains triggered the deadly slides in West Java province.

Several others were injured in the December 31 disaster. “The search has wrapped up,” said West Java

police chief Agung Budi Maryoto.

“Just one victim has not yet been found and the family has accepted it.” Landslides are common in Indonesia, a vast tropical archipelago prone to natural disasters and torrential downpours.

More than 20 people died in October when flash floods and landslides hit several provinces on Sumatra island, western Indonesia.

Australian Open: History beckons as Serena shoots for Slam history

MELBOURNE - Serena Williams is back in Melbourne as hot favourite to repeat her 2017 Australian Open win and claim a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam with rivals, including defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, battling health issues and poor form.

Williams won her 23rd title and seventh at Melbourne Park while eight weeks pregnant two years ago, and now attempts to match Margaret Court’s mark of 24 singles majors on the Australian’s home soil.

The 37-year-old enters the tournament ranked 16 in the world but has proved in the past that such numbers mean little to her, despite fresh memories of her meltdown in losing the US Open final to Naomi Osaka in September.

Her 2017 triumph Down Under gave Williams the outright open era record for singles majors ahead of Steffi Graf’s 22, leaving only Court’s tally of 24 titles -- 13 of which were earned in the amateur era before 1968 -- for Williams to chase.

Williams missed her first chance to match Court when losing last year’s Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber, and said ahead of the Australian Open that she was taking nothing for granted.

“It’s something that I clearly want but I have to be able to get

there and beat a lot of good players to get it,” the American said.

Regarding the controversial final against Osaka at Flushing Meadows -- when she raged against umpire Carlos Ramos who imposed three code violations, the final one resulting in the loss of a game -- Williams said she had put it put behind her and intended to “move on to bigger and better things”.

Bookmakers in Australia have installed Williams as a short-priced favourite for the title with her US Open conqueror Osaka -- the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam -- next in the betting.

LOS ANGELES - Young stars Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball answered Los Angeles coach Luke Walton’s call for more fire on Monday, leading the Lakers to a 107-97 NBA victory over the Mavericks in Dallas.

Ingram scored 29 points, Ball added 21 and the Lakers erased a 13-point halftime deficit to halt a three-game skid and post just their second victory in seven games since superstar LeBron James suffered a groin injury in a Christmas Day victory over two-time defending champions Golden State.

Walton had called out Ingram and Ball after a disappointing 108-86 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.

Although the Lakers again found themselves in an early hole in Dallas, Walton said he saw more energy from the opening tip off, and when his team played smarter in the second half they were able to turn things around.

“I was actually very pleased with our competitive spirit in that first half,” Walton said. “I thought guys were giving it their all.”

Walton said he urged his players to “mentally turn it up” in the second half, and they responded by outscoring the Mavericks 3213 in the third quarter.

“We knew that was our mis-

Thon Maker scored a seasonhigh 15 points off the bench for the Bucks, who trailed by three going into the fourth quarter.

Klopp defends changes as Wolves dump Liverpool out of FA Cup

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes an early injury to defender Dejan Lovren highlighted why he chose to name a second-string side in bowing out of the FA Cup 2-1 to Wolves on Monday.

Klopp made nine changes to the side that lost narrowly for the first time in the Premier League this season to Manchester City on Thursday, with Lovren one of only two players to retain their place.

Manchester United’s legendary former manager Alex Ferguson delivered a rousing call to arms to the players, insisting they could make the club successful again, a source close to the Premier League team told The Sun. The 77-year-old Scot -- who guided United to numerous trophies including two Champions League titles during his 27-year reign -has played an increasingly prominent role since former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became interim manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

The latest intervention from Ferguson, who has made a remarkable recovery from the brain haemorrhage he suffered last May, came at the behest of Solskjaer and took place at the training ground.

The squad are presently in Dubai for a training camp ahead of Sunday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur which represents a real test

for Solskjaer to maintain his perfect record of five wins in five matches.

“He (Ferguson) told the lads that this group will make United dominant and successful again,” the source told The Sun. “He said that he believes in them and he wants them to enjoy themselves and to fight hard for each other and leave everything on the pitch.”

Ferguson told the players that in Solskjaer -- who has put a smile back on the players faces since the departure of the volatile Mourinho -- they could look forward to happier times.

Solskjaer and Ferguson know each other well as the Norwegian played under him for 11 years, accruing many trophies including six Premier League titles and the 1999 Champions League trophy.

“He also told them that the club is in good hands and he promised them that it will become bigger and better in the years to come and they

will be part of this success,” the source said. “The players believe that there are some good times ahead.”

Although Solskjaer has been appointed as a stop gap till the end of the season -- Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino remains the bookmakers favourite for the fulltime post -- the players are keen according to the Daily Mirror he gets the job.

Solskjaer could do himself no end of good in pursuit of the job by landing a trophy this term with United still involved in the Champions League and the FA Cup, though, they were drawn away to Premier League rivals Arsenal in Monday’s fourth round draw.

Manchester United’s legendary former manager Alex Ferguson delivered a rousing call to arms to the players, insisting they could make the club successful again, a source close to the Premier League team told The Sun. The 77-year-old Scot -- who guided United to numerous trophies including two Champions League titles during his 27-year reign -has played an increasingly prominent role since former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became interim manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

The latest intervention from Ferguson, who has made a remarkable recovery from the brain haemorrhage he suffered last May, came at the behest of Solskjaer and took place at the training ground.

The squad are presently in Dubai for a training camp ahead of Sunday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur which represents a real test

for Solskjaer to maintain his perfect record of five wins in five matches.

“He (Ferguson) told the lads that this group will make United dominant and successful again,” the source told The Sun. “He said that he believes in them and he wants them to enjoy themselves and to fight hard for each other and leave everything on the pitch.”

Ferguson told the players that in Solskjaer -- who has put a smile back on the players faces since the departure of the volatile Mourinho -- they could look forward to happier times.

Solskjaer and Ferguson know each other well as the Norwegian played under him for 11 years, accruing many trophies including six Premier League titles and the 1999 Champions League trophy.

“He also told them that the club is in good hands and he promised them that it will become bigger and better in the years to come and they

will be part of this success,” the source said. “The players believe that there are some good times ahead.”

Although Solskjaer has been appointed as a stop gap till the end of the season -- Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino remains the bookmakers favourite for the fulltime post -- the players are keen according to the Daily Mirror he gets the job.

Solskjaer could do himself no end of good in pursuit of the job by landing a trophy this term with United still involved in the Champions League and the FA Cup, though, they were drawn away to Premier League rivals Arsenal in Monday’s fourth round draw.

Australian Open: History beckons as Serena shoots for Slam history

MELBOURNE - Serena Williams is back in Melbourne as hot favourite to repeat her 2017 Australian Open win and claim a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam with rivals, including defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, battling health issues and poor form.

Williams won her 23rd title and seventh at Melbourne Park while eight weeks pregnant two years ago, and now attempts to match Margaret Court’s mark of 24 singles majors on the Australian’s home soil.

The 37-year-old enters the tournament ranked 16 in the world but has proved in the past that such numbers mean little to her, despite fresh memories of her meltdown in losing the US Open final to Naomi Osaka in September.

Her 2017 triumph Down Under gave Williams the outright open era record for singles majors ahead of Steffi Graf’s 22, leaving only Court’s tally of 24 titles -- 13 of which were earned in the amateur era before 1968 -- for Williams to chase.

Williams missed her first chance to match Court when losing last year’s Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber, and said ahead of the Australian Open that she was taking nothing for granted.

“It’s something that I clearly want but I have to be able to get

there and beat a lot of good players to get it,” the American said.

Regarding the controversial final against Osaka at Flushing Meadows -- when she raged against umpire Carlos Ramos who imposed three code violations, the final one resulting in the loss of a game -- Williams said she had put it put behind her and intended to “move on to bigger and better things”.

Bookmakers in Australia have installed Williams as a short-priced favourite for the title with her US Open conqueror Osaka -- the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam -- next in the betting.

LOS ANGELES - Young stars Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball answered Los Angeles coach Luke Walton’s call for more fire on Monday, leading the Lakers to a 107-97 NBA victory over the Mavericks in Dallas.

Ingram scored 29 points, Ball added 21 and the Lakers erased a 13-point halftime deficit to halt a three-game skid and post just their second victory in seven games since superstar LeBron James suffered a groin injury in a Christmas Day victory over two-time defending champions Golden State.

Walton had called out Ingram and Ball after a disappointing 108-86 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.

Although the Lakers again found themselves in an early hole in Dallas, Walton said he saw more energy from the opening tip off, and when his team played smarter in the second half they were able to turn things around.

“I was actually very pleased with our competitive spirit in that first half,” Walton said. “I thought guys were giving it their all.”

Walton said he urged his players to “mentally turn it up” in the second half, and they responded by outscoring the Mavericks 3213 in the third quarter.

“We knew that was our mis-

Attacker wounds 20 children at Beijing school BEIJING - Twenty children were wounded in an attack at an elementary school in Beijing Tuesday with three suffering serious injuries, local authorities said, as state-run media reported that the assailant used a hammer.

A male suspect was brought “under control” and the wounded pupils were admitted to hospital, the Xicheng district government said, without elaborating on how or why the man carried out the attack.

According to a tweet by state-run tabloid Global Times, the suspect used a hammer to carry out the assault.

Beijing police did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.

Violent attacks targeting schoolchildren are not uncommon in China, which has seen a slew of deadly incidents over the past few years, usually involving knives.

In April last year, a 28-year-old man killed nine middle-school students as they were returning home in one of the country’s deadliest knife attacks in recent years.

The killer, who said he had been bullied when he attended the school in northern China’s Shaanxi province, was executed in September.

Later in 2018, a knife-wielding woman injured 14 children at a kindergarten in Sichuan province.

The 39-year-old assailant slashed students while they were returning to the classroom after morning exercises.

DHAKA - Bangladeshi police Tuesday fired rubber bullets and tear gas as thousands of striking workers in the South Asian country’s huge garment industry staged protests for a third day demanding wage hikes.

Bangladesh’s 4,500 textile and clothing factories exported more than $30 billion worth of apparel last year, making clothing for retailers such as H&M, Walmart, Tesco, Carrefour and Aldi.

Police said more than 5,000 workers blocked a national highway at Hemayetpur outside the capital Dhaka and clashed with them for hours after they walked out of their factories.

“At least 12 policemen were injured after they threw rocks at our officers. We fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. Twelve factories were shut down,” police official Sana Shaminur Rahman told AFP. The online edition of the Manabjamin newspaper said at least 50 protesters were injured in waves of clashes, which also spread to garment factory hubs in Dhaka, Ashulia and Uttara involving thousands more workers.

The protests are the first major test for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since winning a fourth term in December 30 elections marred by violence, thousands of arrests and allegations of vote rigging and

intimidation.

Bangladesh raised the minimum monthly wage for the garment sector’s four million workers by 51 percent to 8,000 taka ($95) from December.

But senior workers say their raise was less than this and unions, which warn the strikes may spread, say the hike fails to compensate for price rises in recent years.

“The wages were hiked after five years. But in the five years the cost of living has increased more than the wage hike,” Babul Akhter, head of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, told AFP Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest garment maker after China.

But despite the industry’s role in transforming the impoverished nation into a major manufacturing hub, garment workers are some of the lowest paid in the world.

The industry also has a poor workplace safety record with the collapse of a Rana Plaza garment factory complex killing more than 1,130 people in 2013 in one of the world’s worst industrial disasters.

Following the disaster, major retailers formed two safety groups to push through crucial reforms in the factories, prompting manufacturers to plough in more than a billion dollars in safety upgrades. (afp)

DILI — Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta has urged Indonesia’s government to hold talks with the Papuan independence movement to help end a decades-long insurgency in the country’s easternmost region.

Ramos-Horta, joint recipient of the 1996 Nobel prize for efforts to bring independence and peace to East Timor, which suffered a brutal Indonesian occupation for nearly a quarter century, said he believes the Papua region’s future is within Indonesia, not as a separate state.

“Talk to the Papuans, the OPM (Free Papua Organization), but as brothers of Indonesia,” Ramos-Horta said in an interview last week. “The Papuans, they have to feel that the government, the people in Java, really care about them.”

The conflict between Indonesia and the rebels, who number perhaps just several hundred, flared again last month when armed separatists in Nduga killed at least 17 people working on a trans-Papua highway construction site that’s a key part of President Joko Widodo’s efforts to bring development to the impoverished region.

The government has said accusations that the military fired at villages with white phosphorous projectiles, a banned chemical weapon, in retaliation are “totally baseless, nonfactual and gravely misleading.” At least four people were killed in the security operation. Wiranto, the top security minister, has rejected the idea of talks.

Police have arrested then released hundreds of suspected independence supporters and raided offices of the West Papua National Committee, a civilian group that advocates for self-determination. In Timika, police occupied the committee’s secretariat, graffitied it with slogans such as “Indonesia Forever” and demolished symbols of the independence move-

ment.

Ramos-Horta, East Timor’s president from 2007 to 2012, said restraint is needed on both sides.

“So first, they must give up on armed attacks on Indonesian civilians or military authorities, but at the same time the Indonesian military also have to restrain themselves from not cracking down, attacking ... people every time they demonstrate,” he said.

An independence movement and an armed insurgency have simmered in the formerly Dutch-controlled region since it was annexed by Indonesia in 1963. Indonesian control was formalized in 1969 with a referendum known as the “Act of Free Choice” held in an atmosphere of heavy intimidation in which only 1,026 Papuans were allowed to vote.

Nowadays, indigenous Papuans, largely shut out of their region’s economy, are poorer, sicker and more likely to die young than people elsewhere in Indonesia. Decades of Indonesian military brutality and impunity have contributed to deep resentment of Indonesian rule.

Ramos-Horta, however, said the situation in Papua is not comparable to East Timor’s independence struggle and there’s no role for the U.N. in the conflict.

East Timor, Ramos-Horta said, was a Portuguese colony for more than 400 years before Indonesia invaded in 1975, whereas Papua was part of the Dutch East Indies empire that was the basis for the borders of modern Indonesia.

He believes Widodo, who is seeking a second five-year term in elections due April, is committed to ending the conflict without revising Indonesia’s borders.

“He will make every effort to engage the brothers and sisters in Papua in dialogue to find a resolution for the conflict,” he said. (afp)

More than 20 people died in October when flash floods and landslides hit several provinces on Sumatra island, western Indonesia.

MEXICO CITY — President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador launched an ambitious plan Saturday to stimulate economic activity on the Mexican side of the U.S.Mexico border, reinforcing his country’s commitment to manufacturing and trade despite recent U.S. threats to close the border entirely.

Mexico will slash income and corporate taxes to 20 percent from 30 percent for 43 municipalities in six states just south of the U.S., while halving to 8 percent the value-added tax in the region.

Business leaders and union representatives have also agreed to double the minimum wage along the border, to 176.2 pesos a day, the equivalent of $9.07 at current exchange rates.

Lopez Obrador, who took office on Dec. 1, said the idea is to stoke wage and job growth via fiscal incentives and productivity gains.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained that low wages in Mexico lure jobs from the U.S. Mexico committed to boost wages during last year’s negotiations to retool its free trade agreement with the U.S. and Canada.

Speaking from Ciudad Juarez, a manufacturing hub south of El Paso, Texas, Lopez Obrador said Saturday he agrees with Trump that Mexican wages “should improve.”

Apple is not among the exhibitors at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, but that didn’t prevent the iPhone maker from sending a message to attendees on a large billboard.

“What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone,” Apple says in the message to be seen by tens of

thousands attending the Las Vegas tech show.

The message comes as gadget makers are concerned about data protection scandals and in many cases looking to make their own point about respect for privacy.

Some companies are offering better ways of protecting internet

routers or services without a need for an internet connection -- reducing the potential for data leaks and breaches. Dutch startup Scalys is showing its Trustbox, a router that aims to protect the user’s connection as well as devices using it.

Another router from Chicago-based Winston stops tracking and surveil-

lance and can also block ads and geolocation.

The data scandals “are like Christmas presents for us,” by prompting more consumers to look for better security, said Winston founder Richard Stokes.

“As we see more things being connected I think that you’ll

definitely hear people talk about security more and really looking at how would you secure the data,” said analyst Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies.

The ‘War of Rattan’ or better known as gebug ende can be found at Patas village, Gerokgak subdistrict. Actually, this tradition comes from the lava land (nickname of Karangasem, precisely from Seraya village).

By and large, this tradition is played when dry season arrives. At that time, people of Seraya have a religious cultural tradition to beg for rain. This tradition is played by two men, where the player hits each other with a rattan whip of two meters long. It is accompanied with a piece of shield with a diameter of 60 cm made of dry cowhide tied to wooden frame. Other than the players, in the arena of the game there are also two people serving as referee or pakembar.

Encouraged by the intention to manage less productive paddy fields, Wayan Dika, a farmer from Marga, successfully establishes an agrotourism drawing visitors from Tabanan and outside Tabanan. One of his friends suggested planting sunflowers. When planting the sunflowers in the area of ??1,000 square meters, Dika claimed to learn much from social media. Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, in the dissemination and inauguration of the Gubernatorial Regulation No. 99/2018 last Monday at Pengotan village said that to realize the vision of Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali and the mission of achieving food independence, increasing added value and competitiveness of agriculture, fisheries and handicraft industries, arrangements are needed to synergize the tourism sector with agriculture, fisheries and handicraft industry sectors.

In this connection, tourism must be a locomotive for agriculture, fisheries and local industries so that tourism and agricultural sector can grow and develop together.

Not the other way around, tourism moves forward quickly and leaves the farm behind. If this condition occurs, it means that tourism and agriculture are separate life. In other words, the tourism marginalizes agriculture. Certainly this may not happen.

Therefore, tourism and agriculture must go hand in hand and be empowered and synergized as a strategy in building the economy of Bali in order to improve the welfare of the community, especially farmers, fishermen, players and activists of local industry in Bali.

“Therefore, the Bali provincial government issued a strategic policy in the form of Gubernatorial Regulation No. 99/2018 concerning the marketing and utilization of local agricultural, fisheries and industrial products of Bali consist-

ing of 14 chapters and 30 articles,” said Koster.

He explained the implementation of the gubernatorial regulation aims to provide certainty and continuity in the marketing and utilization of local agricultural, fishery and industrial products of Bali, provide assurance of selling prices as well as regulate trade systems that favor Balinese people, increase the quantity, quality and continuity of production, increase employment, economic growth and improve people’s welfare. The types of products regulated are agricultural products including food crops, horticulture, plantations and fisheries; fishery products; and local industries in Bali including food, textile, and various industries.

In this regulation, the governor requires supermarkets to buy and sell food, horticulture and plantation and fishery product at least 60 percent of the total volume of products marketed. In addition, there are also local Bali food products and local Bali industries at least 30 percent of the total volume of the products marketed.

In running the business activities, every hotel, restaurant and catering company is also required to prioritize the utilization of food crop, horticulture and plantation products at least 30 percent of the volume of products needed; at least 30 percent of livestock products for hotel and restaurant needs; and at least 10 percent for the needs of the processing / meat processing industry. The list appeared in the December 25 issue of the weekly magazine “Spa!” and prompted outrage, particularly online where one woman launched a campaign seeking an apology and suspension of sales of the offending issue.

Her petition on the change. org platform accused the article of “sexualising, objectifying and disrespecting women” and had collected support from more than 28,000 people by Tuesday.

“We would like to apologise for using sensational language to appeal to readers about how they can become intimate with women and for creating a ranking... with real university names... that resulted in

a feature that may have offended readers,” the magazine’s editorial department said in a statement obtained by AFP. The article was about a practice the magazine described as “gyaranomi” or drinking parties that male participants pay women to attend.

It said the parties are popular among female college students and interviewed the developer of an app intended to help men and women find potential attendees.

The magazine said its list was based on information from its interview with the developer.

“On issues that involve sex, we will do what we can as a magazine to listen to various opinions,” the

statement said.

There was no indication that the offending issue would be taken off the shelves. Japan ranks bottom of the G7 countries on female representation in politics and business, and campaigns like the #MeToo movement have struggled to take off in the country.

Last year, a leading medical university admitted it had routinely lowered the scores of female applicants to keep the number of women in the student body at around 30 percent.

Sidestepping trade war, Musk breaks ground on Tesla Shanghai plant

SHANGHAI - Tesla boss Elon Musk presided Monday over the ground-breaking for a Shanghai factory that will allow the electriccar manufacturer to dodge the China-US tariff crossfire and sell directly to the world’s biggest market for “green” vehicles.

The plant in a Shanghai suburb is Musk’s biggest overseas move yet and will eventually have an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles, Tesla says, dramatically increasing the California-based company’s output.

“China is becoming the global leader in electric vehicle adoption, and it is a market that is critical to Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” Musk said, according to a statement released by the manufacturer.

Musk had hinted recently at an upcoming Shanghai trip to break ground for the plant but Monday’s event was not publicly announced until the Tesla CEO broke the news in a series of tweets earlier in the day.

In typically iconoclastic style, the 47-year-old Musk changed his Twitter profile picture around the time of the ceremony to one showing his face with an exaggerated handlebar moustache drawn on it.

The Shanghai government later posted photos on social media showing Musk and officials from Tesla and the city on a large stage at a launch ceremony at the site, located on Shanghai’s distant outskirts.

No investment figures were given but the cost of the project has been estimated by analysts at up to $5 billion.

The Shanghai venture comes as US companies face pressure from President Donald Trump to keep manufacturing jobs at home, and as Beijing and Washington wage a trade spat that has seen both sides levy tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of products.

Analysts say production in China would allow Tesla to side-step such measures, which have already

caused a spike in the price of the cars the company now imports to the Chinese market.

But construction of the plant -- the subject of stopstart negotiations between Tesla and Shanghai for well over a year -- gets under way just as the outlook for China’s consumer market has turned worrisome.

Apple sparked global alarm over the prospects for the world’s second-largest economy last week when it cut its revenue forecast, citing slowing demand in China and the trade war.

Domestic and foreign automakers have been racing to grab shares of China’s electric-vehicle sector -- already the world’s biggest and expected to continue to grow as the Chinese government pushes clean technologies.

But the pace of growth is expected to slow along with China’s economy.

The Shanghai factory will be Tesla’s first production line outside the United States.

Musk tweeted earlier Monday that Tesla was “aiming to finish initial construction this summer, start Model 3 production end of year & reach high-volume production next year”.

The Shanghai plant would supply the “Greater China region” with “affordable versions” of the Tesla Model 3 -- the carmaker’s first mid-price, mass-market vehicle -- and its planned Model Y, Musk tweeted.

The Model S, Model X and “higher cost versions” of the 3 and Y would continue to be made in the United States for the global market, including China, he added.

Despite its relative affordability compared to other Tesla models, the price of a US-made Model 3 now starts at about $50,000, but Musk has said he aims to get that down to $35,000. He provided no price figures for China-made cars.

China typically requires foreign automakers to forge joint ventures with domestic firms when establishing manufacturing plants, which means sharing profits and technology with local partners.

Wilkinson Baking Company unveiled its BreadBot at the Consumer Electronics Show, a machine that mixes and bakes up to 235 loaves a day.

Chief executive Randall Wilkinson said the device can lower costs and produce fresher breads than are available in most American supermarkets.

“Consumers want the freshest thing possible, but when they go into the store they don’t know when that bread was baked,” said Wilkinson, a member of the family-owned firm in Walla Walla, Washington.

Wilkinson said the machine, which takes up as much room as a mid-sized car, has more automation technology than bread factories, and can produce at a far lower cost.

He noted that using in-store robotic machines could eliminate

the need for truck delivery, which accounts for as much as 45 percent of the cost of most bread.

This means profits could get a rise.

The company is in talks with major supermarket chains and also plans to deliver the robots to the US military for making buns on carrier fleets, Wilkinson said.

The bread robot -- which was at a startup showcase Sunday and will be on the show floor from Tuesday -- joins a line of devices aimed at disrupting the food industry, including pizza-making robots and robotic baristas.

The current generation of BreadBot is designed for standard kinds of loaves but Wilkinson said the robots can be adapted for customized breads, even French baguettes.

“At some point you will be able to order a special loaf on your phone -- you can add sunflower seeds, use less salt or whatever -- and pick it up in an hour,” he said. (afp)

Kevin Spacey due in court over sex assault claims

NEW YORK - Actor Kevin Spacey was due in court Monday to appear before a judge on the tony destination island of Nantucket, Massachusetts over accusations he sexually assaulted a teenager in 2016.

The “House of Cards” star had asked that his lawyers represent him at the hearing, but Judge Thomas Barrett declined, forcing Spacey to appear before him at 11:00 am (1600 GMT). he formal charges come more than 13 months after the complaint was filed, and is part of the latest chapter in the #MeToo movement after the sentencing of actor Bill Cosby and the indictment against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
