LOS ANGELES - U.S. comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will host the 2017 Oscars ceremony in February, organizers said on Monday, taking on one of the trickiest jobs in show business.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed that Kimmel had been chosen after it was first reported by Hollywood trade publication Variety. Kimmel, 49, who hosts ABC television’s “Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel,” will be a first-time host of the Oscars, the most prestigious night in the movie industry. He previously hosted the 2016 Emmy Awards for television and is a past host of the American Music Awards show. The 2017 Oscars ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, and will be broadcast domestically on ABC. “Yes, I am hosting the Oscars. This is not a prank. And if it is, my revenge on @TheAcademy will be terrible & sweet,” Kimmel tweeted on Monday. The Academy was unusually late in announcing who will host the 2017 ceremony, a deal which is normally sewn up by November. The job is a difficult balancing act with competing goals of entertaining hundreds of A-list stars at the venue, as well as a worldwide TV audience, and moving along presentations for some 20 awards. Kimmel follows Chris Rock, a black comedian who hosted the 2016 Oscars amid a controversy over the all-white acting nominee lineup and the wider lack of diversity in the industry. Deadly magnitude 6.5 earthquake hits Aceh in Indonesia

An earthquake off Indonesia’s northern Aceh province has killed at least 97 people, say local military officials. The magnitude 6.5 quake struck just off the north-east coast of Sumatra island, where dozens of buildings have collapsed and many people are feared trapped under rubble. “So far, 97 people have been killed and the number keeps growing,” Aceh military chief Tatang Sulaiman said in a live TV interview. In 2004, a huge undersea quake off the coast of Aceh caused a tsunami that killed more than 160,000 people in Indonesia alone. There was no tsunami after Wednesday’s tremor, which the US Geological Survey said struck just offshore at 05:03 local time (22:03 GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 8km.A spokesman for Indonesia’s national disaster agency said more than 200 shops and homes had been destroyed, along with 14 mosques. A hospital and school were also badly damaged. “We estimate the number of casualties will continue to rise

as some of the residents are still likely [to be] under the rubble of the buildings. The search and rescue operation is still underway,” said Sutopo Nugroho, who also said thousands of rescuers, including soldiers, had been deployed. Maj Gen Tatang Sulaiman said four people had been rescued alive from the rubble and he believed there might be four or five more still buried, though he did not say whether they were alive. “Hopefully we would be able to finish the evacuation from the rubble before sunset,” he said.Said Mulyadi, deputy district chief of Pidie Jaya, the region hit hardest by the quake, told the BBC’s Indonesian service earlier in the day that the death toll was likely to rise.

He also told the AFP news agency that several children were among the dead and that local hospitals had been overwhelmed. Heavy equipment is being used to search for survivors, but Puteh Manaf, head of the local disaster management agency, told the BBC’s Mehulika Sitepu that more people were needed to help because some staff were busy helping their own families.Pidie Jaya is along the north coast of Aceh, and has a population of about 150,000. It is about 110 km (68 miles) from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh. The quake shook Banda Aceh and prompted many people across the region to flee their homes. Many are said to be reluctant to go back indoors, amid a number of aftershocks. BADUNG - The phenomenon known as a demographic bonus refers to a spike in the number of people of productive age who could potentially contribute significantly to economic growth. In Indonesia alone, there will be a demographic bonus up until 2030. However, this also poses a great challenge globally as the increasing number of young people will also mean higher rates of unemployment.

“Indeed this is a big challenge for Indonesia, even though our unemployment rate is decreasing. Given that the number of people of productive age will continue to increase until 2030, we really need to set up a system that addresses this”, said Indonesia’s Minister of Manpower, Hanif Dhakiri, who sat as a chairman of the 16th Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting of the International Labor Organization (ILO) at the BNDCC in Nusa Dua, on Tuesday (Dec. 6). There needs to be a way to make sure that productive age people are truly able to access quality jobs, said Hanif. This can be achieved by improving professional skills and training. The government of Indonesia is now encouraging this and is also collaborating with other countries. “The role of the business community also needs to be included in order to increase the skills of prospective employees”, he added. In the ILO Meeting, Hanif expressed his desire to encourage all member countries to cooperate in skill development and competency integration. “This integration is important so that labour working in Indonesia for example can be considered qualified by employers here. The same is true for Indonesian labour working in other countries, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Mobility should not be hindered by lack of skills,’ he explained. However, added Hanif, competency has become a global issue in terms of the transnational labour force. Actually, by increasing competency and skills, gives prospective employees a better chance in the job market allowing them to have better working conditions and increased prosperity. (kmb32)

Inundated by overflowing water of Ijogading NEGARA - Since the river embankment broke, dozens of hectares of paddy fields in Subak Mertasari, East Loloan, are threatened with crop failure. The paddy field located along the river bank of Ijogading are always flooded when the river overflows. Moreover, the subak (irrigation cooperative) pathway on the edge of the river is almost entirely

eroded. As seen on Tuesday (Dec. 6), the impact of the erosion almost cut off the subak access. The flow of the river has changed a lot, and people’s lands have disappeared, eroded by the river water. According to residents, they are most severly flooded by the river at gigh tide. Currently farmers are worried because they just planted rice.

I Ketut Suderken, 50, a local subak member said that the river embankment broke down around a month ago and both road access and irrigation channels have collapsed. “We are worried that the rice paddy firleds will be flooded with ocean tides”, he said. To prevent the erosion form getting any worse, residetns have installed bamboo logs and

woven bamboo walls along the river. They hope the river channel embankment will be repaired or that a permanent one will be installed. Indeed there had been talk about straightening the river channel of Ijogading, so that it no longer passes through this area. But so far, such a plan has not been realized. GIANYAR - Residents of Ubud were surpised by the action of naked tourist running amok at a mini market on Jalan Tjampuhan Ubud, on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 6). The woman claiming to that her name wsa Miss Briam was not carrying her identity card. The woman who is alleged to be suffering from depression was escorted by the ranks of the Ubud Police to the Denpasar Immigration detention house. Chief of the Ubud Police, Nyoman Wirajaya, explained that he received a report regarding a foreigner running amok on Tuesday afternoon around

1 pm. “We happened to be in the catus pata (central intersection) area of Ubud with a number of security guards when we received the report, so I immediately assigned my personnel to the location”, he explained. When the officers arrived at the scene, the foreigner was found naked and running amok, slamming the seats of the the mini market on Jalan Tjampuhan. Other foreingners in the vicinity appeared to be distrubed by the behaviour of the naked women with a stalky frame. “Naked, she ran amok throwing charis. Thankfully she did not attack the other travellers”,

explained Wirajaya. Seeing the commotion, the officers immediately took the naked tourist into the patrol car to be further transported to the Ubud Police station. The officers also purchased a house dress fro her to put on. “After giving her clothes, I tried to communicate with her for nearly two hours, but her answers never made any sense, and she did not seem to remmebr why she had been naked nor could she remmeber her identity. She just said that her name was Briam”, he said. Wirajaya added that after communicating with her for two hours,

he saw no signs that she was drunk or on drugs. He finally concluded that the foregin citizen was experiencing a depression or other mental disorder. “If she had been drunk or on drugs, she would have changed after a few hours, but in fact she did not. She just kept talking nonsense”, he explained. Based on these findings, the chief of Ubud Police directly coordinated with all the owners of accommodations in Ubud, but no one said that they had a guest with such characteristics. Residents around Jalan Tjampuhan also did not know where the foreigner

had come from.. “No one saw her at the location because it was drizzling, then suddenly she appeared in naked condition and ran amok”, he said. Chief of the Ubud Police then contacted the immigration monitoring section of enforcement for the Denpasar Immigration Office who suggested that the woman be commended to the the custody of the Denpasar Immigration Office located in Jimbaran, Nusa Dua. “Now, we have delivered the foreigner to the detention house of the Denpasar Immigration Office to be further dealt with there”, he said. Gazyva is used with the chemotherapy drug bendamustine to treat follicular lymphoma (FL) and Roche is counting on it to help mitigate the impact of biosimilars on Rituxan, whose patents expired this year.. Roche failed to find a follow-up drug to its Avastin blockbuster this year and faces competition from rivals including Novartis whose Sandoz generics unit is hot on Rituxan’s heels. An analysis released at the weekend meeting of the American Society of Hematology found that for patients with previously untreated FL, those getting Gazyva and bendamustine showed a 94 percent overall survival rate at three years. That compares with 92 percent overall survival among those getting Rituxan and chemotherapy,

raising concerns among analysts that Roche will have trouble differentiating Gazyva. “A few physicians we spoke to were unimpressed... which could make it more difficult to replace Rituxan with Gazyva,” Jeffrey Holford at Jefferies said in a note to investors. Roche said the trial had shown Gazyva to be superior to the current standard of care and the improvement was “meaningful”. “People with this disease need better initial treatment options that delay their cancer getting worse, since the disease is incurable and becomes more difficult to treat with each relapse,” a Roche spokesman said in an emailed response. Roche shares gained 1 percent, in line with Swiss stocks. Analysts on average expect Gazyva to reap $1.7 billion in 2020,

according to consensus forecasts compiled by Thomson Reuters, and in May, Roche raised hopes for the drug by releasing initial findings showing it met its main goal of superior progression-free survival compared to Rituxan, which in some markets is known as Mabthera. In the more-detailed analysis released at the U.S. meeting this weekend, Roche said Gazyva improved progression-free survival by 34 percent among 1,202 patients in the study. But analysts said three-year-old Gazyva’s safety profile in combination with bendamustine was a concern, with the rate of severe, life-threatening and fatal adverse events 74.6 percent with Gazyva, versus 67.8 percent with Rituxan. “The data presented was critically perceived by haematologists, as the favored combination with bendamustine appears relatively too toxic,” Bank Vontobel analyst Stefan Schneider said. “It will take a strong effort from Roche to achieve a broad switching.” (rtr)

Even with one cigarette a day, odds of early death are higher

MARYLAND - Smokers who go through much less than a pack of cigarettes a day still have a higher risk of an early death than nonsmokers, a new study suggests. “There is no safe level of cigarette smoking,” said lead study author Maki Inoue-Choi, a researcher at the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland. “Even smokers who consistently smoked less than one cigarette per day were more likely to die in our study than never smokers,” InoueChoi said by email. Tobacco smoking poses a major public health challenge and claims about five million lives each year worldwide, researchers note in JAMA Internal Medicine. A growing number of smokers tend to be “light” smokers, going through less than half a pack of cigarettes a day, the authors write. This used to be how people cut back gradually on the path to quitting, but it’s increasingly a pattern that smokers follow for years at a time. To get a better picture of the health effects of light smoking, researchers tracked more than 290,000 adults aged 59 to 82, including more than 22,000 current smokers and more than 156,000 former smokers, who completed surveys in 2004 and 2005.

By 2011, compared to people who never smoked, adults who consistently smoked at least part of one cigarette a day were 64 percent more likely to have died of any cause, researchers report in JAMA Internal Medicine. Smoking one to 10 cigarettes a day was associated with 87 percent higher odds of dying from all causes during the study than not smoking at all. Lung cancer deaths in particular were much more likely among light smokers than non-smokers. The odds of death from lung cancer were more than nine times higher with a habit of even one cigarette a day, while smoking up to 10 cigarettes a day was associated with almost 12 times the risk of death from lung cancer. Former smokers fared better when they quit at younger ages. For example, ex-smokers of one to 10 cigarettes a day who kicked the habit after age 50 had a 42 percent higher risk of death from all causes during the study period, compared to those who kicked the habit at younger ages. One limitation of the study is that researchers relied on participants to accurately recall and report on how often they smoked even may years in the past, the authors note. (rtr)

BANGLI - Bangli’s Culture and Tourism agency is aiming to increase the number of both foreign and domestic tourists in 2017 and are therefor seeking to improve tourist attractions in the district. The Head of the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Adnyana, recently said that they aim to have 1.2 million visitors next year. Last year there was a total of 800,000 visitors. “The numbers tend to go up every year as tourism develops” he said. Increasing the number of visitors automaticaly means an increase in revenue from levies. This year they amounted to IDR 20 billion and the aim is to reach 2.2 billion in 2017. IN order to achieve this target, Adnyana said that the management of existing tourist attractions needs to be improved by intensifying their development. “ We have quaite a lot of attractions . They need to be managed

better. Something unique needs to be offered and so we try to motivate such innovations”, he added. So far, most visitors to Bangli go to Kintamani and so in order to prevent a slump in visitors in 2017, the area of Penelokan will have an attraction with international standards will be arranged with a budget of some IDR 26 billion. In terms of tourism villages, most visitors go to Penglipuran village. “We plan to make Penelokan more attractive, with a liveier atmosphere and a stage for performances”, he explained. When asked about realizing the targeted number of visitors this year, he said that as of October they had reached 75% of their goal, most of whom were fomr Europe and Japan. He added that he was confident that they will reach their target by the end of the year. “We believe that the target for this year and next year

can be reached”, he said. Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, expressed similar views. Improvements will be ongoing in order to reach the target set. IN addition to developing the area of Penelokan, there are also plans to develop water tourism on Lake Batur. The Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya, was consutled on the matter some time ago. “We are going to develop water tourism so that visitors will be able to enjoy the beuaty of Lake Batur. We have the support of ITS”, he said. The pier at Bali’S largest lake will also be repaired so that visitors boarding at Kedisan Pier will be able to go to Trunyan village but also to Toya Bungkah. “We want Kintamani’s tourist attractions to be really good by 2018”, he concluded. A Unique Pendet Pasepan Dance The pendet dance perfromed for the piodalan of the Dalem Temple of Setra Batununggul customary village in Nusa Penida, is both sacred and unique. Although the form of this pendet dance resembles other pendet dances, here, supporting devotees of the temple perform the pendet while holding small bowls of fire -known as pasepan, in their hands as they dance. This sacred dance is performed after supporting devotees of the temple express their genuine devotion and gratitude for the blessings that have been bestowed, through the melasti or purificatory rite procession for Ida Bhatara (deities). Dance coordinator I Dewa Gede Rai Sudiarta explained that the form of this pendet is the same as other pendet dances exept that instead of holding flower offerings, the dancers carry the pasepan. “The concept of

this sacred dance has to do with generating an aura of spiritual purity. The means used is called agni hotra”, he said. The Pendet Pasepan Dance is a calssical Balinese ritual that is particular to Nusa Penida and is filled with spiritual nuances. The number of dancers involved is not determined, but depends on how many people are able to carry it out. It is categorized as a sacred dance because it is closely related to spiritual arts and ritual traditions . “It is danced with sincerity by young women who want to devote themselves sincerely and flexibly”, said Rai Sudiarta. This pendet dance is accompanied by terompongan gamelan instruments that carry classical spiritual meaning. The first week of November, when a thick blanket of toxic haze covered the city, did much to hasten that awareness. As the noise and smoke from millions of firecrackers from the Hindu festival of Diwali died down, the city woke up Nov. 1 to soaring levels of PM2.5 — pollution particles so tiny they can get deeply embedded in the lungs. Levels in the Indian capital averaged well over 900 micrograms per cubic meter, more than 36 times the level the WHO considers acceptable and 15 times the Indian norm. Manufacturers and importers of air purifiers and pollution masks say late 2016 is the first time they’ve had a serious number of Indian families inquiring about and buying their products. “It’s only in 2016 that we’ve started to get through to the middle class,” said Barun Aggarwal, who heads Breathe Easy, a company that assesses homes and offices in New Delhi for pollution and provides

solutions such as air purifiers and indoor plants. When Aggarwal started his business in 2013, he had no customers for months. Later that year the World Health Organization report describing Delhi as the world’s dirtiest city was released. “In the last four months (of 2013) we finally managed maybe 50 customers,” he said, adding that those first customers were almost entirely foreigners living in the Indian capital who came from cities with much cleaner air. This year he expects to hit close to 5,000 customers, with more local residents looking for solutions, Aggarwal said. Other businesses show similar numbers. SmartAir, a company that started selling low-cost air purifiers in China in 2013, set up shop in India in early 2015 and sold 1,000 pieces of its basic do-it-yourself model that year. This year it sold about 500 pieces in the first week of November alone. Hundreds of people queued up outside the Vogmask store in a posh shopping area to spend as much as 2,000 rupees ($29) on high-end pollution masks manufactured by the California-based company. Environmentalists are concerned that the 22 billion Australian dollar ($16 billion) project will damage the nearby Great Barrier Reef. Indian resource billionaire Gautam Adani’s corporation has most of the government approvals needed to proceed with the project that has been planned for six years and fought by environmentalists in the courts. But the investment decision is not yet final and the company is seeking a cheap loan from the Australian government to build the rail infrastructure. Adani announced Tuesday that the project’s regional headquarters would be the north Queensland city of Townsville. JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) sent his chief presidential staff Teten Masduki to Aceh to observe the aftermath of the earthquake disaster that hit Pidie Jaya District on Wednesday morning. “I have ordered everyone to act according to their respective authorities. The chief of the presidential staff will also leave for Aceh,” President Jokowi said at the State Palace on Wednesday. The president noted that he had received a report on the earthquake: “An earthquake occurred in Aceh. I have received a report on it.” The head of state said he would continue to follow the developments of the crisis. “We will continue to follow the developments in Aceh. We hope there will be no victims.” The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has reported that 14 buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquake, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. “Ten shophouses and four houses collapsed. Several electricity poles in Pidie Jaya also crumpled, and one resident was injured,” BNPB chief of the information data center and public relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated. He pointed out that the BNPB command post had confirmed to the agencys regional office that the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami. WASHINGTON — Whether by accident or design, President-elect Donald Trump is signaling a tougher American policy toward China, sparking warnings from both the outgoing Obama administration and Beijing. On Monday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said progress with the Chinese could be “undermined” by a flare-up over the sovereignty of Taiwan, the selfgoverning island the U.S. broke diplomatic ties with in 1979. That split was part of an agreement with China, which claims the island as its own territory, although the U.S. continues to sell Taiwan billions in military equipment and has other economic ties. Trump broke protocol last week by speaking with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, and then took to Twitter to challenge China’s trade and military policies. “It’s unclear exactly what the strategic effort is,” Earnest said. “I’ll leave that to them to explain.” So far, Trump’s advisers have struggled to explain his action, sending mixed messages about whether the conversation with Taiwan’s leader was a step toward a new policy or simply a congratulatory call. WELLINGTON - At least three senior ministers joined the race to replace New Zealand Prime Minister John Key on Tuesday, a day after Key stunned the nation by resigning to spend more time with his family, with his deputy Bill English seen as the front-runner. SINGARAJA - No-one knows the name of this small wooden boat, even if it had one, or what brought it to the area. The wreck is actually named for the anchor that still lies about 6-8M from the surface. You follow the anchor chain down the steep slope to the flattened remains of the shipwreck (35-50M), which lie across about 60M of sand. This is the deepest dive site, we believe that the good visibility and calm conditions mean that it will present no problems to experienced divers. Following the anchor chain down to 32M, there is a second (coral-covered) anchor at the point where the site becomes a sand slope. It is here that you see the first parts of the wreck, dark against the white sand. Across the site you will find copper sheeting and bottles, the boat’s cargo (artefacts, not for souvenirs). There are still some parts of the boat which remain out of the sand, and which are covered in gorgonians, a sure sign of little or no currents at the site. The wall to the west, at 5-10M, is rich with many overhangs, cracks and caves. A good idea for an extended safety stop after this dive. (IBP/net)

CALIFORNIA - Under Armour Inc signed a 10-year contract with Major League Baseball to be its official uniform supplier, the sportswear maker’s first such deal with a professional league. The company will become the exclusive provider of all onfield uniform components including jerseys, game-day outerwear and year-round training apparel for all 30 MLB clubs beginning in the 2020 MLB season, replacing Majestic Athletic. “This is a watershed moment for the Under Armour brand,” Chief Executive Kevin Plank said in a statement. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The No. 2 U.S. sportswear maker has sponsorship contracts with nearly 400 athletes in the league, most notably 2015 National League MVP Bryce Harper. It has partnered with the MLB previously, becoming the official baselayer supplier to MLB in 2000 and its performance footwear partner in 2011. Under Armour’s deals with other professional leagues include outfitting NFL players with its workout gear at the NFL Combine each year since 2009. Fanatics, the largest online seller of sports merchandise in the United States, will be granted rights to produce and sell customized Under Armour and Fanatics merchandise at retail. Sp rt Real Madrid aiming to add Club World Cup title to honors

YOKOHAMA — Real Madrid will be seeking to keep alive its chances of a unique quadruple title haul when it travels to Japan for the Club World Cup from Dec. 8-18. Madrid is trying to become the first team to win the Champions League, Spanish league, Spain’s Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup in the same season. It leads the Spanish league, is through to the knockout stage of the Champions League and is alive in the Copa del Rey. The tournament kicks off on Thursday in Yokohama with newlycrowned J-League champions Kashima Antlers facing Oceania champion Auckland City for a chance to advance to the second round. Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid side hasn’t been defeated since April at Wolfsburg in the quarterfinals of last season’s Champions League. They return to the competition with 13 of the players who lifted the Clubs World Cup title in 2014, where they beat San Lorenzo in the final. Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Keylor Navas are all

expected to participate, but the biggest absence will be Gareth Bale, who recently underwent ankle surgery. European teams have been the most successful in the tournament, with eight titles, although it is not considered as high on the priority list for European clubs as it is for the South Americans. Madrid’s main rival for the title will be Copa Libertadores champions Atletico Nacional who will travel to Japan with a strong team but is dealing with the trauma of the recent tragedy that caused the cancellation of the Copa Sudamericana final. Atletico was to play Brazilian club Chapecoense in the final but the plane carrying the Brazilian team to the game crashed, killing almost all on board. The Colombian club features goalkeeper Franco Armani, who did not concede a single goal during the group stage of Copa Libertadores, as well as captain Alexis Henriquez and striker Miguel Borja.

Atletico opens its campaign in the semifinals on Dec. 14 in Osaka. Real Madrid’s first match is the following day in Yokohama. In addition to Kashima and Auckland City, Mexican side Club America, South Korea’s Jeonbuk Motors and African champions Mamelodi Sundowns will all be looking for a chance to pull off an upset against the favorites. Club America will be making its third appearance in the tournament, and will feature 16 players with previous experience. Paul Aguilar is recovering from a cruciate ligament tear in his right knee, but Moises Munoz and Oribe Peralta will be available. Recently-crowned Asian champions Jeonbuk Motors will pin their hopes on veteran striker Lee Dong-gook and the Brazilian duo Leonardo and Edu. LISBON - Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens sent Napoli into the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-1 win at Benfica on Tuesday while the Portuguese champions scraped through after rivals Besiktas were thumped by Dynamo Kiev. Callejon broke clear and dinked the ball over Benfica goalkeeper Ederson in the 60th minute and substitute Mertens sealed a convincing win for the Serie A side in the Group B match with a superb individual effort. Raul Jimenez pulled back a late goal for a disappointing Benfica who were rescued by previously winless Dynamo Kiev as the Ukrainians thrashed Besiktas 6-0 in the other group game. Napoli, who reached the last 16 for the second time, topped the group with 11 points followed by Benfica on eight and Besiktas on seven. Dynamo, already eliminated, finished with five points. Benfica, unbeaten at home in all competitions since they lost to Porto last February, started the game needing a win while Napoli needed a draw to qualify without depending on the Besiktas result. However, a Besiktas defeat meant both sides would go through whatever happened in Lisbon and the match lost its edge as the Turkish champions went 3-0 down after little more than half an hour. “We weren’t really looking at

what was happening in Kiev,” said Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri. “We wanted first place to make a little piece of history for Napoli who have never won a Champions League group.” Benfica coach Rui Vitoria was relieved his team had qualified. “We wanted to win but we made sure of our place,” he said. “It was an even match and they were more efficient.” Napoli were the more dangerous side and Manolo Gabbiandini had a goal disallowed for offside while Ederson made good saves to deny Callejon and then Gabbiadini. BUENOS AIRES — Argentine football referees have called off a threatened strike for this weekend that was jeopardizing the country’s ‘superclasico’ between Buenos Aires rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors on Sunday. Referees had threatened the strike following a brutal attack on a match official after he did not award a penalty in a key regional match last Sunday. The labor ministry on Tuesday ordered the strike called off and instead ordered mandatory negotiations between the referees’ representatives and the sport’s officials. The violence broke out Sunday when referee Claudio Elichiri waved away penalty claims by home team Sarmiento during a decisive regional league game against Sansinena. Sansinena then scored a goal right away, taking a 2-1 lead. Irate fans invaded the field and the referee sent off several protesting Sarmiento players and suspended the game, enraging local fans and players. Elichiri was besieged by fans

and later told local radio he suffered a cut under his left eye that required stitches, as well as several bruises,
