Renee Zellweger slams media speculation about plastic surgery
LOS ANGELES - Actress Renee Zellweger criticized media outlets for discussing her appearance, and said she did not have any surgery to alter her face, in an essay published on Friday. Zellweger, 47, whose appearance has led to widespread speculation in various media outlets in the past year, said she wanted to “make some claim on the truths of my life,” in a blog post entitled “We Can Do Better” on Huffington Post. S h e was also critical “that tabloid speculations become the subject of mainstream news reporting.”
“Not that it’s anyone’s business, but I did not make a decision to alter my face and have surgery on my eyes,” the actress said. “This fact is of no true import to anyone at all, but that the possibility alone was discussed among respected journalists and became a public conversation is a disconcerting illustration of news/entertainment confusion and society’s fixation on physicality.” Zellweger, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for “Cold Mountain” and will be reprising the titular role in the third “Bridget Jones’ Diary”

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress lost its grip on local government in Tshwane, home of the South African capital Pretoria, as results on Saturday gave the opposition Democratic Alliance a second big win in the ANC’s worst election since the end of apartheid. The results of Wednesday’s voting have reshaped the political landscape in South Africa, where the ANC has ruled virtually unopposed since it ended white-minority rule in 1994, led by Nelson Mandela. Unemployment, economic stagnation and scandals around President Jacob Zuma led voters to punish the ANC, changing the outlook for national elections in 2019 and potentially emboldening Zuma’s rivals within the ANC to
challenge him. Saving some pride, the ANC won in Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic and financial hub, taking 45 percent of the vote to the DA’s 38 percent, but will have to form a coalition to govern. Wins in Tshwane and in Nelson Mandela Bay, which includes the manufacturing hub Port Elizabeth, are a watershed for the DA, which also held Cape Town, a municipality that it has
controlled since 2006. Dewa Made Merta Kota, a Balinese culinary practitioner, said the rise of Balinese cuisines must obtain an accommodation from the government so that they can prevail on track. For example, it can be realized through the establishment of Balinese culinary community. Aside from helping the marketing aspect, it can also boost the Balinese culinary creativity in order to remain popular. Komang Sugiantara, another Balinese culinary practitioner, also has great expectations seeing the revival of the Balinese culinary treasures. According to him, currently Balinese cuisines have great potential to become the economic strength of the community. “Balinese cuisines may not be let lose in the competition against the people coming here (to Bali) and starting businesses and selling,” he said recently. Revival of Balinese cuisines even takes part in the tourism
development of Bali as a culinary destination. Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, Director of the Master Program of Tourism Studies at Udayana University, said that cuisine plays important role in the development of sustainable tourism. Many communities get appreciation through their business in Balinese cuisines. He said it must be continued to motivate the Balinese culinary businesses. In academic circles, the research on Balinese cuisines specifically featured by women has not much been done whereas Balinese cuisines play a very large role in tourism. “Actually many women entrepreneurs that I name the heroine of Balinese cuisine have a major role in tourism,” he said. Headman of Batukaang, Kintamani, I Nyoman Yudana, said on Saturday (Aug. 6) that the drop in the price of tangerines has been happening since the beginning of the harvest season this year. For Mandarin orange, the selling price currently reaches around IDR 4,000 per kilogram. In the meantime, the price of Slayer orange can only be sold by farmers for IDR 1,500 per kilogram. Allegedly one of the reasons causing the current drop in the price of oranges is the ever-expanding population of orange so that it leads to over-production during the harvest season. Yudana said that with the price of orange at IDR 4,000 per kilogram, a lot of farmers suffered great losses. The selling price is considered incomparable to production cost that must be incurred by farmers over the years. Related to the condition, Yudana also hoped the government can intervene by looking for a breakthrough after the harvest. Besides, the government is expected to help farmers by providing subsidized fertilizer and pesticide to reduce losses. “With the help, I have confidence that tangerine farmers can produce comfortably,” he said. Pennsylvania’s first Mormon temple to open in Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA — The Mormon church is offering the general public a rare opportunity to tour its 152nd temple, a first of its kind in Pennsylvania and prominent addition to downtown Philadelphia. Public tours of the granite temple will run between Wednesday and Sept. 9 near Logan Circle, an openspace park in the city’s center, after which it will be dedicated and only church members in good standing will be permitted to walk its halls. “We do not build temples all of the time. To visit is a once in a generation or two experience,” said Larry Wilson, executive director of the Mormon church’s temple department. Some 80,000 have already registered to tour the space, and Wilson expects to see that number double. Regional membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints has grown to more than 40,000 in parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland, which prompted church leadership in 2008 to announce plans for the temple. The faithful travel to Mormon
temples, which are called “houses of the Lord,” to participate in and receive sacred ordinances, or rituals, such as marriage ceremonies or baptisms for deceased family members. Philadelphia’s temple will significantly lessen the commute for people like Corinne Dougherty, a church spokeswoman for the Philadelphia region. She and a car full of elderly women from her congregation currently travel nearly seven hours roundtrip to the Washington, D.C., temple every other month. Church officials have not released the cost of temple constructions, but with some of the finest building materials — from Swarovski crystal to Italian marble — the temples are not cheap. Elaborate finishes spread across each of the Philadelphia temple’s four levels leave the facility in stark contrast to the much simpler meeting houses church members use for weekly worship. A massive crystal chandelier hangs in the center of the third floor’s “celestial room,” inviting visitors to enter and meditate. Each level, more adorned than the previ-
ous, is believed to draw you closer to God, Wilson said. In the temple’s highest level, members get married in ceremonies that the religion believes seals families for eternity. There, natural light breaks through large windows and stained-glass in soft white, beige and blue. “Standing here we are in the world, but we are always striving for greater holiness for ourselves and our families,” Wilson said. The temple’s interior and exterior designs are as purposeful as they are ornate. Sweeping Pennsylvania countryside landscapes cover the walls of the lower rooms with depictions of the Susquehanna and Delaware rivers. Designers also made a “conscious effort” to blend mention of the nation’s founding with church history. Two crossed quills embellish moldings and wooden rails as reminders that the church’s founder translated its sacred text — the Book of Mormon — in Pennsylvania and the founding fathers’ signed the Constitution in Philadelphia. framed depictions of Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith, the Mormon church’s founder. “If you look around you will see that there are not many flaws. And if a flaw exists, we fix it,” Wilson said. Out of respect, the church intentionally built the towering 208-foot, 2-inch temple a little shorter than the neighboring Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The golden trumpeting Angel Moroni, standing at just more than 21 feet on the temple’s eastern spire, marks the temple’s highest point. The signature angel statue will stand atop each of the church’s new temples. Plans have most recently been announced in Ecuador, Zimbabwe, Brazil and Peru. Wilson expects the Philadelphia temple to spark some interest in Mormonism, calling the church’s expansion to more than 15 million members worldwide in 2015 “remarkable.” “We’ve gone from those two members in the Pennsylvania wilderness to tens of thousands in the region and even more globally,” he said. SINGARAJA — Banana sheath crafts get appreciation from local and foreign buyers. This potential is developed by Ambengan village, Sukasada, by processing raw materials of simple banana sheathes into high-valued products. A number of people since the past few years have developed photo frames and photo album crafts. The making is still carried out manually and traditionally. Crafter community collects the quality banana sheath as the raw material. All the materials are sorted and cut, and then they are formed according to the desired size. Additional variations are using butterfly leaf as the accessories to make the products look appealing. “At Ambengan village, many home industries produce photo frames and albums. The material of banana sheath is combined with cardboard. The making of banana sheath crafts has been running since 1995. We take advantage of the uniqueness owned by the banana sheaths into various products,” said Ketut Rasio, an artisan, not long ago. He said the craft potential at Ambengan village needs to be aggressively developed. Moreover, the production of innovative craft is able to improve the local economy. The marketing has reached some countries like Italy, Greece, Jamaica and Hawaii. “The development of banana sheath craft begins to experience ups and downs. In the past, almost all villagers made photo frame crafts. Due to global crisis, craftsmen declined slightly, but generally some people are still making the crafts,” he added. He added that the banana sheath craft business involves ten laborers and was pioneered by his brother-in-law. Currently, many foreign guests order his products as decoration with high aesthetic value put in the rooms. “We expect the handicraft business at Ambengan to continuously grow and be demanded by the market. Besides, the sales condition gradually improves,” he said. Marketing to foreign countries is offered at affordable price where the small size is sold for IDR 11,000 per piece and the largest one for IDR 35,000 per piece. Each month craftsmen can deliver at least 200 to 250 pieces to some buyers. “The products are made and delivered in accordance with consumer demand. We have no stock of craft products. The main raw material used to make various types of Pokemon souvenirs is albizia wood. Widiastuti said that since the Pokemon-themed souvenir is a relatively new product made by wood artisans at Malet Kuta Mesir, it has not been widely marketed to souvenir shops. Only a few types of souvenirs have been ordered by travelers. “We have marketed a small number of products because we are still new. To these days, the marketing is also still assisted by instructor that has trained us how to finish wooden souvenirs,” she said. Nevertheless, she has already planned to market the Pokemon-
themed souvenirs in an exhibition. The price set for this wooden souvenir will vary ranging from IDR 30,000 to IDR 50,000. In the meantime, hamlet chief of Malet Kuta Mesir, Ketut Redam, said that the number of citizens getting involved in the wooden souvenir making in the area is quite a lot. Moreover, nearly 90 percent of the local residents at his village work as craftsmen of wooden souvenir. He said that there are no problems for crafters in terms of process and availability of raw materials. However, they often find problems related to marketing. “Wooden souvenir products made by our citizens are often bought at cheap price. But the reselling price is more expensive. Thais vote for first time since 2014 coup in charter referendum
BANGKOK - Voters in Thailand headed to the polls on Sunday in a referendum on a new junta-backed constitution that would pave the way for a general election in 2017 but require future elected governments to rule on the military’s terms. The ballot is the first major popularity test for the junta led by Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha, who has suppressed political activity during the two years since he seized power in a 2014 coup. Ahead of the referendum, polls suggested a small lead in favour of accepting the new constitution, but most voters were undecided. Preliminary results were expected at around 8.00 p.m. (1300 GMT). The junta has said the constitution is designed to heal more than a decade of divisive politics in Thailand that has dented growth and left scores dead in civil unrest. Critics, among them major political parties, say it aims to enshrine the military’s political role for years to come. Prayuth has said he will not resign if Thailand rejects the
constitution and that an election will take place next year no matter what the outcome. “I urge everyone to come out and vote... to decide on the future of the country,” Prayuth told reporters after casting his vote at a polling station in northwest Bangkok early on Sunday. Voting through mid-afternoon had been trouble-free, said Police Major General Piyaphan Pingmuang. “There have been no incidents to indicate protests or any political movement today,” he said. “Everything is smooth.” Around 200,000 police were deployed for the vote. Of 21 cases of voters tearing ballot papers, some were deliberate and others accidental, said Boonyakiat Rakchartcharoen, deputy secretary-general of the

The junta, formally known as the National Council for Peace and Order, forbid debate about the constitution and banned campaigning ahead of the vote. The authorities have detained and charged dozens of people who have spoken against it, including politicians and student activists. Amnesty International said on Friday the junta had created a chilling climate ahead of the vote through pervasive human rights violations. The vote comes against the back-drop of concern about the health of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 88. MANILA — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte publicly linked more than 150 judges, mayors, lawmakers, police and military personnel to illegal drugs Sunday, ordering them to surrender for investigation as he ratcheted up his bloody war against what he calls a “pandemic.” Duterte promptly relieved members of the military and police he named from their current posts and ordered government security personnel to be withdrawn from politicians he identified in a nationally televised speech. He also ordered gun licenses of those named revoked. “All military and police who are attached to these people, I’m giving you 24 hours to report to your mother unit or I will whack you. I’ll dismiss you from the service,” Duterte said in the speech at a military camp in southern Davao city. He said that the list of politicians, judges and law enforcers given to him by the military and police might or might not be true, but that he had a duty to disclose to the public how the drug problem had become so pervasive. “There is no due process in my mouth,” Duterte said. “You can’t stop me and I’m not afraid even if you say that I can end up in jail.” The list of names, which Duterte said included some friends, has been validated by authorities but did not contain details of the officials’ alleged involvement to the drug trade or offer any evidence. Some names were incomplete, while others had no rank or government position. They included eight judges, as well as five retired and current generals. The rest were mostly town mayors and police officers. One retired general, Vicente Loot, has been previously named in public by Duterte and has denied any wrongdoing. “It’s a pandemic,” said Duterte, a former mayor of Davao, where he built a reputation for his crime-busting style that allegedly involved extrajudicial killings. Duterte’s latest salvo ups the ante in his war on drugs, which has already left more than 400 suspected dealers and pushers dead and more than 4,400 arrested in more than a month since he took office. BUSINESS French tourism minister says hotel stays down 10 pct in July due to attacks -paper PARIS - The number of nights spent in French hotels by foreign tourists fell 10 percent in July compared to last year as visitors from outside Europe were deterred by recent Islamist militant attacks, the tourism minister was cited as saying on Sunday. France’s tourism industry, an important driver of its economy, has suffered since Islamic State gunmen killed 130 people in an attack in Paris last year. It was dealt further blows in July when a militant killed 85 people by ramming a truck into crowds in the Riviera city Nice. Two weeks later, two men killed a priest in a small town in Normandy. High-spending visitors from the United States, Asia and the Gulf in particular had been discouraged by the attacks, Matthias Fekl said in an interview with Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. Tourists from other European countries, who make up about 80 percent of visitors, were still coming to France, he said. The first six
months of the year had also seen a 10 percent decline in the number of stays compared to a year ago, Fekl told the newspaper. Ecuador appeals to tourists to return as earthquake hits economy

NEW YORK - Almost four months after a devastating earthquake hit Ecuador, a leading government minister has appealed to tourists to return to the financially-struggling Andean country. Nearly 700 people were killed and about 6,200 injured on April 16 in the strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador in almost four decades, leaving about 8,650 people living in government shelters, according to government figures. Maria Duarte, Ecuador’s Minister of Urban Development and Housing, said she was “totally” optimistic about the pace of reconstruction with the repair or rebuilding of 26,000 homes in the works or planned. Longer term she said the government had to improve the construction of buildings in Ecuador which is prone to earthquakes. Two tremors struck the northwest coast again in May, leading to one death in the same region as the April quake. But for now she appealed to tourists to return to Ecuador to help put the country back on track. “We have several types of victims, not all are victims due to the destruction of their homes,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a interview during a visit to New York City. “There are people who remain
without jobs and whose only form of sustenance was tourism, which momentarily is nonexistent.” The strongest quake in Ecuador since 1979 has tested the country’s resilience at a time of economic difficulties due to low oil prices in this small member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Some $3.3 billion will be required to rebuild affected areas, according to authorities. President Rafael Correa has announced a raft of measures to finance the emergency with funding sources ranging from loans from the International Monetary Fund and other multilateral lenders to plans to sell assets and increase some taxes. But he also described many ill-built constructions in Ecuador as “death traps” built as such to “save a few pennies” and has urged residents to push mayors to enforce construction standards. Duarte said municipal building requirements were rarely respected or enforced in remote areas of the country and in the disaster’s aftermath

President urges for expediting development
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has called for expediting the development efforts to make use of the momentum of economic growth and optimism by taking credible steps. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said at the presidential palace compound here on Friday that the President wished to accelerate the development efforts in view of a number of economic indicators. “I have seen the economic indicators. We will continue this momentum of improvement and optimism. The development could be expedited by taking certain cred-

“They had hatched a plan to attack Singapore by firing a rocket from Batam,” head of the national polices public information bureau, Brigadier General Agus Rianto, said here on Friday. He informed that GRD was to execute the plan in cooperation with Bahrun Naim, an ISIS fighter from Indonesia. “The plot was likely hatched before BN (Bahrun Naim) left for Syria,” he added. GRD is also believed to have planned a number of bombings at busy locations and police stations. Agus pointed out that GRD is the leader of a terrorist group, named “Kitabah Gonggong Rebus.” The polices anti-terrorist Densus 88 squad arrested GRD and five other KGR members in Batam on Friday. “We arrested six terror suspects who were members of the Kitabah Gonggong Rebus from Batam on Friday morning,” he said. They were caught from different locations. GRD (31), Tar (21) and ES (35) were nabbed from the Batam Center while TS (46) was caught in Nagoya and HGY (20) and MTS (19) from Batu Aji. Intense fighting as Syrian rebels break through Aleppo siege
BEIRUT - Syrian rebels broke through to besieged opposition-held areas in eastern Aleppo on Saturday in an assault on a major government military complex meant to end a monthlong siege, insurgents and a monitoring group said. Pro-government media outlets denied the siege had been broken and a U.S. State Department official said the situation was “too fluid” to comment. The heavy fighting and air strikes reported from the area seemed to indicate any passage that may have been opened would be far from secure enough for civilians to travel through. Rebels have been trying to break through a thin strip of governmentcontrolled territory to reconnect insurgent areas in western Syria with their encircled sector of eastern Aleppo, in effect breaking a government siege begun last month. The offensive against the government’s Ramousah military complex, which contains a number of
military colleges, began on Friday. Taking control of Ramousah and linking up with eastern Aleppo would isolate government-held western Aleppo by cutting the southern route out toward the capital Damascus. It would also give rebels access to armaments stored in the base the Syrian army has used in the five-year conflict as a strategic platform from which to shell opposition targets. BRUSSELS - A machetewielding man yelling “Allahu Akbar!” (God is greatest) injured two female police officers before being fatally shot in the Belgian city of Charleroi on Saturday, in what the prime minister said appeared to be a terrorist act. The attacker was shot by a third officer and subsequently died of his wounds, but the police officers were out of danger, police said. “Initial indications clearly point towards terrorism,” Prime Minister Charles Michel told the television channel RTL. Public broadcaster VRT said the attacker had taken out a machete when two officers asked to search him at a checkpoint set up outside the city’s police headquarters as part of security measures imposed after major Islamist attacks in the last nine months in Belgium and neighbouring France. One young man told the television station VTM that he and his friends heard five to six shots fired in rapid succession, then, 30 seconds later, three more shots. There was no immediate indication of the man’s identity;

Museum Gedong Kirtya
SINGARAJA - Gedong Kirtya is a manuscript museum in Singaraja, north Bali, which houses a vast collection of thousands of old Balinese manuscripts inscribed on lontar palm-leaves. These lontar books cover subjects of literature, mythology, history and religious works and are some of the oldest written works on the island. The manuscripts record ancient knowledge and wisdom of older Balinese generations and are historical references of all Balinese daily activities, rituals and art. Singaraja houses this only lontar museum in the world. Formerly it was referred to as the Liefrinck van der Tuuk library, named after its Dutch founders. The lontar derives its name from the local word for the Asian Palmyra palm, or Borassus flabellifer, which grows in dry regions. The leaves are further dried and used as pages upon which writings are carved into by the aid of a special sharp-tipped blade called a temutik. Gedong Kirtya was built in 1928 as a repository of these manuscripts with collections coming from various islands other than from Bali itself. The volumes are kept in special wooden boxes and sorted under different categories, from Vedic renditions and mantra hymns, religion, wariga or Balinese astronomy, itihasa or epic tales and poems, babad or Balinese genealogy, to tantri or folklore. RIO DE JANEIRO - Unflappable American teenager Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Saturday, holding her nerve against two Chinese Olympic champions to clinch the women’s 10m air rifle event. The 19-year-old U.S. college champion edged out China’s Du Li, gold in Athens in 2004, with an Olympic-record score of 208 in the sport’s new finals format. Competing in her first Olympics, Thrasher, as the first champion of the 2016 Games, was awarded her medal by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach and said the achievement was beyond her wildest dreams. The youngest of the eight finalists by several years, Thrasher established an early lead after battling with the Russian shooter Daria Vdovina, who stumbled midway through the competition and finished fifth. “About halfway through when I took the lead it kind of became clear to me that I was in contention for a medal, but I quickly pushed that thought away and focused on breathing and taking one shot at a time,” Thrasher said. while hunting deer with her grandfather when she was in eighth grade. “I got my first deer and I liked the adrenaline of pulling the trigger,” she said. BELO HORIZONTE — Love her or hate her, Hope Solo’s dominance as a goalkeeper is undeniable. Solo came up big in her 200th international appearance as the United States fought off France 1-0 on Saturday in an Olympic group match at Mineirao Stadium. And she did it while facing boos from Brazilian fans still riled up about her social media posts about the Zika virus. “What’s important to me is that I played the best quality of football that I can play, and that hopefully our team makes it to the final,” Solo said. “If they (the fans) are having fun, great. I like a loud stadium. But it really doesn’t mean anything to me.” Solo became the first goalkeeper, male or female, to reach the 200-cap mark in international play. She also became just the 11th U.S. player to reach that number of appearances. The U.S. women, winners of last year’s World Cup and ranked No. 1 in the world, are vying for their fourth straight Olympic gold medal. Along with the tournament-opening victory over New Zealand, the United States is in good position for the quarterfinals. France, ranked No. 3, was considered the Americans’ biggest rival in the group. And they proved a tenacious foe. The deal with a Chinese investor group, which includes the participation of a Chinese state investment fund, values the club at 740 million euros (around $820 million) and requires the investors to spend 350 million euros over three years on improvements, Berlusconi’s investment arm Fininvest said in a statement on Friday. The deal is to be finalized by the end of the year. Berlusconi owns 99.93 percent of the club. The three-time former premier and billionaire businessman has been negotiating for over a year to sell a stake in the club, failing to reach a deal for a 48percent stake with Thai investors last year before opening talks in May with the then-unnamed Chinese investors, initially for a 70 percent stake. The deal comes a month after Chinese retail giant Suning bought a majority 70-percent stake in Inter Milan, which shares the San Siro Stadium with AC Milan, and the same day that another group of Chinese investors — Yunyi Guokai (Shanghai) Sports Development Limited — reached a deal to buy out English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion subject to approval. The 75-year-old soccer great said this week he had been invited to light the cauldron, though that was not confirmed by Rio organizers. “I’m not physically able to attend the opening of the Olympics,” Pele said in a statement on Friday. Pele had hip surgery recently
and often walks with a cane. His absence — in any role — will be a huge disappointment to fans and organizers. He is easily Brazil’s most recognizable athlete — or former athlete — though he stopped playing almost 40 years ago. “Only God is more important than my health,” he wrote. “In my life I’ve had fractures, surgeries, pain, hospital stays, victories and defeats. And I’ve always respected those who admire me.” He said pulling out was “my own decision.”
Pele’s role in the opening ceremony has never been clear. He had said earlier that a commitment to a sponsor would force him to travel the day of the ceremony. “If I manage to change (the travel plans), I would like to have the honor to light it,” he said. Museum Gedong Kirtya
SINGARAJA - Gedong Kirtya is a manuscript museum in Singaraja, north Bali, which houses a vast collection of thousands of old Balinese manuscripts inscribed on lontar palm-leaves. These lontar books cover subjects of literature, mythology, history and religious works and are some of the oldest written works on the island. The manuscripts record ancient knowledge and wisdom of older Balinese generations and are historical references of all Balinese daily activities, rituals and art. Singaraja houses this only lontar museum in the world. Formerly it was referred to as the Liefrinck van der Tuuk library, named after its Dutch founders. The lontar derives its name from the local word for the Asian Palmyra palm, or Borassus flabellifer, which grows in dry regions. The leaves are further dried and used as pages upon which writings are carved into by the aid of a special sharp-tipped blade called a temutik. Gedong Kirtya was built in 1928 as a repository of these manuscripts with collections coming from various islands other than from Bali itself. The volumes are kept in special wooden boxes and sorted under different categories, from Vedic renditions and mantra hymns, religion, wariga or Balinese astronomy, itihasa or epic tales and poems, babad or Balinese genealogy, to tantri or folklore. American teenager Thrasher wins first gold of Games
RIO DE JANEIRO - Unflappable American teenager Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Saturday, holding her nerve against two Chinese Olympic champions to clinch the women’s 10m air rifle event. The 19-year-old U.S. college champion edged out China’s Du Li, gold in Athens in 2004, with an Olympic-record score of 208 in the sport’s new finals format. Defending Olympic champion Yi Siling, also of China, took the bronze medal. Competing in her first Olympics, Thrasher, as the first champion of the 2016 Games, was awarded her medal by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach and said the achievement was beyond her wildest dreams. The youngest of the eight finalists by several years, Thrasher established an early lead after battling with the Russian shooter Daria Vdovina, who stumbled midway through the competition and finished fifth. “About halfway through when I took the lead it kind of became clear to me that I was in contention for a medal, but I quickly pushed that thought away and focused on breathing and taking one shot at a time,” Thrasher said. Thrasher learned to love shooting
while hunting deer with her grandfather when she was in eighth grade. “I got my first deer and I liked the adrenaline of pulling the trigger,” she said. She then joined her high school air rifle team and was recruited by West Virginia University, where she became a national collegiate champion as a freshman this year. With her non-nonsense style, Thrasher seemed unfazed by her seasoned field and consistently scored in the 10 points target area over the 20 rounds. Afterwards, she noted that she had not attended the Olympics’ opening ceremony Friday night and had instead gone to bed early for her Olympic debut. Like all American shooters, Thrasher faced the inevitable question of what she thinks about gun control in the United States, a hotbutton issue in this election year. Intense fighting as Syrian rebels break through Aleppo siege
BEIRUT - Syrian rebels broke through to besieged opposition-held areas in eastern Aleppo on Saturday in an assault on a major government military complex meant to end a monthlong siege, insurgents and a monitoring group said. Pro-government media outlets denied the siege had been broken and a U.S. State Department official said the situation was “too fluid” to comment. The heavy fighting and air strikes reported from the area seemed to indicate any passage that may have been opened would be far from secure enough for civilians to travel through. Rebels have been trying to break through a thin strip of governmentcontrolled territory to reconnect insurgent areas in western Syria with their encircled sector of eastern Aleppo, in effect breaking a government siege begun last month. The offensive against the government’s Ramousah military complex, which contains a number of
military colleges, began on Friday. Taking control of Ramousah and linking up with eastern Aleppo would isolate government-held western Aleppo by cutting the southern route out toward the capital Damascus. BRUSSELS - A machetewielding man yelling “Allahu Akbar!” (God is greatest) injured two female police officers before being fatally shot in the Belgian city of Charleroi on Saturday, in what the prime minister said appeared to be a terrorist act. The attacker was shot by a third officer and subsequently died of his wounds, but the police officers were out of danger, police said. “Initial indications clearly point towards terrorism,” Prime Minister Charles Michel told the television channel RTL. Public broadcaster VRT said the attacker had taken out a machete when two officers asked to search him at a checkpoint set up outside the city’s police headquarters as part of security measures imposed after major Islamist attacks in the last nine months in Belgium and neighbouring France. One young man told the television station VTM that he and his friends heard five to six shots fired in rapid succession, then, 30 seconds later, three more shots. BUSINESS French tourism minister says hotel stays down 10 pct in July due to attacks -paper PARIS - The number of nights spent in French hotels by foreign tourists fell 10 percent in July compared to last year as visitors from outside Europe were deterred by recent Islamist militant attacks, the tourism minister was cited as saying on Sunday. France’s tourism industry, an important driver of its economy, has suffered since Islamic State gunmen killed 130 people in an attack in Paris last year. It was dealt further blows in July when a militant killed 85 people by ramming a truck into crowds in the Riviera city Nice. Two weeks later, two men killed a priest in a small town in Normandy. High-spending visitors from the United States, Asia and the Gulf in particular had been discouraged by the attacks, Matthias Fekl said in an interview with Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. NEW YORK - Almost four months after a devastating earthquake hit Ecuador, a leading government minister has appealed to tourists to return to the financially-struggling Andean country. Nearly 700 people were killed and about 6,200 injured on April 16 in the strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador in almost four decades, leaving about 8,650 people living in government shelters, according to government figures. Maria Duarte, Ecuador’s Minister of Urban Development and Housing, said she was “totally” optimistic about the pace of reconstruction with the repair or rebuilding of 26,000 homes in the works or planned. Longer term she said the government had to improve the construction of buildings in Ecuador which is prone to earthquakes. Two tremors struck the northwest coast again in May, leading to one death in the same region as the April quake. But for now she appealed to tourists to return to Ecuador to help put the country back on track. “We have several types of victims, not all are victims due to the destruction of their homes,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a interview during a visit to New York City. “There are people who remain
without jobs and whose only form of sustenance was tourism, which momentarily is nonexistent.” The strongest quake in Ecuador since 1979 has tested the country’s resilience at a time of economic difficulties due to low oil prices in this small member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Some $3.3 billion will be required to rebuild affected areas, according to authorities. President Rafael Correa has announced a raft of measures to finance the emergency with funding sources ranging from loans from the International Monetary Fund and other multilateral lenders to plans to sell assets and increase some taxes. But he also described many ill-built constructions in Ecuador as “death traps” built as such to “save a few pennies” and has urged residents to push mayors to enforce construction standards. Duarte said municipal building requirements were rarely respected or enforced in remote areas of the country and in the disaster’s aftermath

President urges for expediting development
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has called for expediting the development efforts to make use of the momentum of economic growth and optimism by taking credible steps. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said at the presidential palace compound here on Friday that the President wished to accelerate the development efforts in view of a number of economic indicators. “I have seen the economic indicators. He informed that GRD was to execute the plan in cooperation with Bahrun Naim, an ISIS fighter from Indonesia. “The plot was likely hatched before BN (Bahrun Naim) left for Syria,” he added. GRD is also believed to have planned a number of bombings at busy locations and police stations. Agus pointed out that GRD is the leader of a terrorist group, named “Kitabah Gonggong Rebus.” The polices anti-terrorist Densus 88 squad arrested GRD and five other KGR members in Batam on Friday. “We arrested six terror suspects who were members of the Kitabah Gonggong Rebus from Batam on Friday morning,” he said. They were caught from different locations. GRD (31), Tar (21) and ES (35) were nabbed from the Batam Center while TS (46) was caught in Nagoya and HGY (20) and MTS (19) from Batu Aji. He added that the banana sheath craft business involves ten laborers and was pioneered by his brother-in-law. Currently, many foreign guests order his products as decoration with high aesthetic value put in the rooms. “We expect the handicraft business at Ambengan to continuously grow and be demanded by the market. Besides, the sales condition gradually improves,” he said. Marketing to foreign countries is offered at affordable price where the small size is sold for IDR 11,000 per piece and the largest one for IDR 35,000 per piece. Each month craftsmen can deliver at least 200 to 250 pieces to some buyers. “The products are made and delivered in accordance with consumer demand. We have no stock of craft products. So far, the Pokemon-themed souvenirs having been made by her and other artisans include pencil case, wall decoration, business card case and wall clock. The main raw material used to make various types of Pokemon souvenirs is albizia wood. Just as the making of animal-themed souvenirs or any others, the Pokemon souvenir is also made through a process of manual engraving and finishing. “Before the booming of Pokemon Go game, we usually make wooden souvenirs of animal
themes. One of them is owl souvenir,” said the woman who is also a group leader of Tunjung Sari wood crafter, Friday (Aug. 5). Widiastuti said that since the Pokemon-themed souvenir is a relatively new product made by wood artisans at Malet Kuta Mesir, it has not been widely marketed to souvenir shops. Only a few types of souvenirs have been ordered by travelers. “We have marketed a small number of products because we are still new. To these days, the marketing is also still assisted by instructor that has trained us how to finish wooden souvenirs,” she said. Nevertheless, she has already planned to market the Pokemon-
themed souvenirs in an exhibition. The price set for this wooden souvenir will vary ranging from IDR 30,000 to IDR 50,000. In the meantime, hamlet chief of Malet Kuta Mesir, Ketut Redam, said that the number of citizens getting involved in the wooden souvenir making in the area is quite a lot. Moreover, nearly 90 percent of the local residents at his village work as craftsmen of wooden souvenir. He said that there are no problems for crafters in terms of process and availability of raw materials. However, they often find problems related to marketing. “Wooden souvenir products made by our citizens are often bought at cheap price. But the reselling price is more expensive. BANGKOK - Voters in Thailand headed to the polls on Sunday in a referendum on a new junta-backed constitution that would pave the way for a general election in 2017 but require future elected governments to rule on the military’s terms. The ballot is the first major popularity test for the junta led by Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha, who has suppressed political activity during the two years since he seized power in a 2014 coup. Ahead of the referendum, polls suggested a small lead in favour of accepting the new constitution, but most voters were undecided. Preliminary results were expected at around 8.00 p.m. (1300 GMT). The junta has said the constitution is designed to heal more than a decade of divisive politics in Thailand that has dented growth and left scores dead in civil unrest. Critics, among them major political parties, say it aims to enshrine the military’s political role for years to come. Prayuth has said he will not resign if Thailand rejects the
constitution and that an election will take place next year no matter what the outcome. “I urge everyone to come out and vote... to decide on the future of the country,” Prayuth told reporters after casting his vote at a polling station in northwest Bangkok early on Sunday. MANILA — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte publicly linked more than 150 judges, mayors, lawmakers, police and military personnel to illegal drugs Sunday, ordering them to surrender for investigation as he ratcheted up his bloody war against what he calls a “pandemic.” Duterte promptly relieved members of the military and police he named from their current posts and ordered government security personnel to be withdrawn from politicians he identified in a nationally televised speech. He also ordered gun licenses of those named revoked. “All military and police who are attached to these people, I’m giving you 24 hours to report to your mother unit or I will whack you. I’ll dismiss you from the service,” Duterte said in the speech at a military camp in southern Davao city. He said that the list of politicians, judges and law enforcers given to him by the military and police might or might not be true, but that he had a duty to disclose to the public how the drug problem had become so pervasive. “There is no due process in my mouth,” Duterte said. “You can’t stop me and I’m not afraid even if you say that I can end up in jail.” The list of names, which Duterte said included some friends, has been validated by authorities but did not contain details of the officials’ alleged involvement to the drug trade or offer any evidence. Some names were incomplete, while others had no rank or government position. They included eight judges, as well as five retired and current generals. The rest were mostly town mayors and police officers. One retired general, Vicente Loot, has been previously named in public by Duterte and has denied any wrongdoing. “It’s a pandemic,” said Duterte, a former mayor of Davao, where he built a reputation for his crime-busting style that allegedly involved extrajudicial killings. Duterte’s latest salvo ups the ante in his war on drugs, which has already left more than 400 suspected dealers and pushers dead and more than 4,400 arrested in more than a month since he took office. Nearly 600,000 people have surrendered to authorities, hoping to avoid getting killed. The crackdown has been one of the biggest and bloodiest in the Philippines’ recent history and has alarmed human rights groups and the dominant Roman Catholic Church. But Duterte has dismissed their concerns and has openly threatened to kill crime suspects, assuring law enforcers that he would defend them if they face lawsuits while battling criminality. (ap)

Pennsylvania’s first Mormon temple to open in Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA — The Mormon church is offering the general public a rare opportunity to tour its 152nd temple, a first of its kind in Pennsylvania and prominent addition to downtown Philadelphia. Public tours of the granite temple will run between Wednesday and Sept. 9 near Logan Circle, an openspace park in the city’s center, after which it will be dedicated and only church members in good standing will be permitted to walk its halls. “We do not build temples all of the time. To visit is a once in a generation or two experience,” said Larry Wilson, executive director of the Mormon church’s temple department. Some 80,000 have already registered to tour the space, and Wilson expects to see that number double. Regional membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints has grown to more than 40,000 in parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland, which prompted church leadership in 2008 to announce plans for the temple. The faithful travel to Mormon
temples, which are called “houses of the Lord,” to participate in and receive sacred ordinances, or rituals, such as marriage ceremonies or baptisms for deceased family members. Philadelphia’s temple will significantly lessen the commute for people like Corinne Dougherty, a church spokeswoman for the Philadelphia region. She and a car full of elderly women from her congregation currently travel nearly seven hours roundtrip to the Washington, D.C., temple every other month. Church officials have not released the cost of temple constructions, but with some of the finest building materials — from Swarovski crystal to Italian marble — the temples are not cheap. Elaborate finishes spread across each of the Philadelphia temple’s four levels leave the facility in stark contrast to the much simpler meeting houses church members use for weekly worship. A massive crystal chandelier hangs in the center of the third floor’s “celestial room,” inviting visitors to enter and meditate. Each level, more adorned than the previ-
ous, is believed to draw you closer to God, Wilson said. In the temple’s highest level, members get married in ceremonies that the religion believes seals families for eternity. There, natural light breaks through large windows and stained-glass in soft white, beige and blue. “Standing here we are in the world, but we are always striving for greater holiness for ourselves and our families,” Wilson said. The temple’s interior and exterior designs are as purposeful as they are ornate. Sweeping Pennsylvania countryside landscapes cover the walls of the lower rooms with depictions of the Susquehanna and Delaware rivers. Designers also made a “conscious effort” to blend mention of the nation’s founding with church history. Two crossed quills embellish moldings and wooden rails as reminders that the church’s founder translated its sacred text — the Book of Mormon — in Pennsylvania and the founding fathers’ signed the Constitution in Philadelphia. Out of respect, the church intentionally built the towering 208-foot, 2-inch temple a little shorter than the neighboring Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. The golden trumpeting Angel Moroni, standing at just more than 21 feet on the temple’s eastern spire, marks the temple’s highest point. The signature angel statue will stand atop each of the church’s new temples. Plans have most recently been announced in Ecuador, Zimbabwe, Brazil and Peru. Wilson expects the Philadelphia temple to spark some interest in Mormonism, calling the church’s expansion to more than 15 million members worldwide in 2015 “remarkable.” “We’ve gone from those two members in the Pennsylvania wilderness to tens of thousands in the region and even more globally,” he said. For example, it can be realized through the establishment of Balinese culinary community. Aside from helping the marketing aspect, it can also boost the Balinese culinary creativity in order to remain popular. Komang Sugiantara, another Balinese culinary practitioner, also has great expectations seeing the revival of the Balinese culinary treasures. According to him, currently Balinese cuisines have great potential to become the economic strength of the community. “Balinese cuisines may not be let lose in the competition against the people coming here (to Bali) and starting businesses and selling,” he said recently. Revival of Balinese cuisines even takes part in the tourism
development of Bali as a culinary destination. Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, Director of the Master Program of Tourism Studies at Udayana University, said that cuisine plays important role in the development of sustainable tourism. Many communities get appreciation through their business in Balinese cuisines. He said it must be continued to motivate the Balinese culinary businesses. In academic circles, the research on Balinese cuisines specifically featured by women has not much been done whereas Balinese cuisines play a very large role in tourism. “Actually many women entrepreneurs that I name the heroine of Balinese cuisine have a major role in tourism,” he said. Women play significant role in culinary tourism of Bali such as roasted suckling pig of Bu Oka, Kedewatan chicken rice of Bu Mangku, Warung Made in Kuta and Seminyak and Men Tempeh. Headman of Batukaang, Kintamani, I Nyoman Yudana, said on Saturday (Aug. 6) that the drop in the price of tangerines has been happening since the beginning of the harvest season this year. For Mandarin orange, the selling price currently reaches around IDR 4,000 per kilogram. In the meantime, the price of Slayer orange can only be sold by farmers for IDR 1,500 per kilogram. Allegedly one of the reasons causing the current drop in the price of oranges is the ever-expanding population of orange so that it leads to over-production during the harvest season. Yudana said that with the price of orange at IDR 4,000 per kilogram, a lot of farmers suffered great losses. The selling price is considered incomparable to production cost that must be incurred by farmers over the years. Related to the condition, Yudana also hoped the government can intervene by looking for a breakthrough after the harvest. Besides, the government is expected to help farmers by providing subsidized fertilizer and pesticide to reduce losses. “With the help, I have confidence that tangerine farmers can produce comfortably,” he said. LOS ANGELES - Actress Renee Zellweger criticized media outlets for discussing her appearance, and said she did not have any surgery to alter her face, in an essay published on Friday. Zellweger, 47, whose appearance has led to widespread speculation in various media outlets in the past year, said she wanted to “make some claim on the truths of my life,” in a blog post entitled “We Can Do Better” on Huffington Post. S h e was also critical “that tabloid speculations become the subject of mainstream news reporting.”

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress lost its grip on local government in Tshwane, home of the South African capital Pretoria, as results on Saturday gave the opposition Democratic Alliance a second big win in the ANC’s worst election since the end of apartheid. The results of Wednesday’s voting have reshaped the political landscape in South Africa, where the ANC has ruled virtually unopposed since it ended white-minority rule in 1994, led by Nelson Mandela. Unemployment, economic stagnation and scandals around President Jacob Zuma led voters to punish the ANC, changing the outlook for national elections in 2019 and potentially emboldening Zuma’s rivals within the ANC to
challenge him. Saving some pride, the ANC won in Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic and financial hub, taking 45 percent of the vote to the DA’s 38 percent, but will have to form a coalition to govern. Wins in Tshwane and in Nelson Mandela Bay, which includes the manufacturing hub Port Elizabeth, are a watershed for the DA, which also held Cape Town, a municipality that it has
controlled since 2006.
