Ariana Grande becomes British heroine with Manchester concert LOS ANGELES - U.S. pop star Ariana Grande, hardly a household name in Britain before a suicide bomber killed 22 people at her Manchester concert in May, has emerged as a national heroine there following an emotional televised benefit performance. In the days following Grande’s sold-out show on Sunday, which raised some $3 million for a victims fund and became the UK’s most-watched TV broadcast of the year, Britons have embraced the 23-year-old singer. They have called for her to be formally honored by Queen Elizabeth and the city of Manchester. At the One Love Manchester concert, Grande hugged a weeping schoolgirl as they performed her hit “My Everything” before a crowd of 55,000 people. The tiny performer ended the show alone on stage, singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in tears. Her team is working to release that emotional final number as a single to raise even more
money for victims, the UK’s Independent newspaper reported on Tuesday. The concert served as a catharsis for many in Manchester and all of Britain, moving British tabloid journalist Piers Morgan to write Grande a lengthy public apology for doubting her courage. “By coming back to Manchester so soon, shrugging off the latest attack in London, standing on that stage and performing with such raw emotion and power, you showed more guts, resilience, strength of character and ‘Blitz spirit’ than every sniveling, pathetic ISIS coward put together,” Morgan wrote in the Daily Mail. Grande was herself a survivor of the May 22 bombing, still inside Manchester Arena when an explosion ripped through the lobby area following her encore. LOS ANGELES - Amal Clooney on Tuesday gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, the first children for the international human rights lawyer and her movie star spouse. “This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine,” George Clooney’s publicist Stan Rosenfield said in an email. He added cheekily, “George is sedated and should recover in a few days.” Amal Clooney, 39, and the 56year-old Oscar-winning star of films like “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Three Kings” married in Italy in 2014, making them one of the world’s biggest celebrity couples. Rosenfield did not say where the twins were born but the couple appear to have been spending much of their time recently in England, where they have one of several homes. The couple adopted a low profile
during the pregnancy, keeping the news private for months before it was confirmed in February by the actor’s close friend, Matt Damon. Attackers bomb Iran parliament and mausoleum at least 12 dead - Iranian media
LONDON - Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked Iran’s parliament and the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran on Wednesday morning, killing at least 12 people in a twin assault at the heart of the Islamic Republic, Iranian officials and media said. Islamic State claimed responsibility and released a video purporting to show gunmen inside the parliament building and one man, who appeared wounded, on the floor. The rare attacks were the first claimed by the hardline Sunni Muslim militant group inside the Shi’ite Muslim country. Iran is one of the powers leading the fight against Islamic State militants in neighbouring Iraq and, beyond that, Syria. Attackers dressed as women burst through parliament’s main entrance in central Tehran, deputy interior minister Mohammad Hossein Zolfaghari said, according to the semiofficial Tasnim news agency. “One of them was shot dead and another one detonated his suicide vest,” he said. About five hours after
the first reports, Iranian news agencies said four people who had attacked parliament were dead and the incident was over. At least 12 people were killed by the attackers, the head of Iran’s emergency department, Pir-Hossein Kolivand, was quoted as saying by state broadcaster IRIB. “I was inside the parliament when shooting happened. Everyone was shocked and scared. I saw two men shooting randomly,” said one journalist at the scene, who asked not to be named. Soon after the assault on parliament, another bomber detonated a
suicide vest near the shrine of the Republic’s revered founder, Ayatollah Khomeini, a few kilometres south of the city, Zolfaghari said, according to Tasnim. A second attacker was shot dead, he said. THIRD ATTACK FOILED - MINISTRY The Intelligence Ministry said security forces had arrested another “terrorist team” planning a third attack, without giving further details. The attacks took place less than a month after the re-election of President Hassan Rouhani, a
moderate, whose landslide victory defeated candidates supported by the hardline clergy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is responsible for national security. “The atmosphere is tense. It is a blow to Rouhani. How can four armed men enter the parliament, where a very tight security has always been in place,” said a senior official, who asked not to be named. The Intelligence Ministry called on people to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement. Despite unconfirmed reports of a hostage situation, state television said parliament had resumed, and broadcast footage of what it said was the opening session proceeding normally. “Some coward terrorists infiltrated one of the buildings of parliament.
They were confronted. It was not a major issue. Our security forces have taken necessary steps,” parliament speaker Ali Larijani said in an open session broadcast live by state TV. Attacks are highly rare in Tehran and other major cities though a Sunni militant group named Jundallah and its splinter group Ansar al Furqan have been waging a deadly insurgency, mostly in more remote areas, for almost a decade. Less ritual paraphernalia on sale at minimarkets
DENPASAR - Mushrooming minimarket or modern market gradually makes merchants in traditional markets go bankrupt. Moreover, their presence has reached directly the community like the implementation of cheap bazaar. Surely, this presence will grab the segment of merchants in traditional markets. Therefore, the drafting plan that forbids minimarkets from entering settlement by the ministry of economic affair coordinator is welcomed by the market management. Chairman of the Denpasar Market Chief Forum, I Nyoman Suwarta, when met on Monday (Jun 5) stated if the regulation will be really made, it will be good because there is partiality of the government to traditional market. It is okay for people to make business, but if they make the SME and small merchants go bankrupt, certainly it is not good for economic equity. “Do not disguise by organizing bazaar during feast days by selling particular products at cheaper prices. If willing to help the SMEs and small merchants, they (minimarkets) may be able to provide stocks of goods so that they can be cheaper in traditional market. They should never come down to invade the existence of traditional market with the excuse of helping the community,” he said. Nevertheless, Suwarta, who is also Chief of Pasar Agung of Peninjoan customary village, appealed to traditional market to make improvement. Arranging the market, improving sanitation and providing training for merchants have become a daily agenda. Secretary of Market Management Forum who is also Chief of Pulakerti Market, I Wayan Agus Indrawan, added that as the market management he welcomes it, but it needs to be followed up with lower rules such as regional bylaw (Perda) and mayoral regulation.
He considered that proliferation of the markets does not directly affect the existence of traditional markets especially when the economic condition is sluggish. Agus observed that market activity began to be rather sluggish since 2017. Fortunately, minimarket has not sold various kinds of ritual paraphernalia and its ingredients. “So far, they still sell consumer goods like foods and snacks. Hopefully, the regulation can govern about it, so the type of merchandise can be limited,” he hoped. Traditional market is characterized by remaining presence of bargaining to merchandise on sale like ritual paraphernalia. “Hopefully, this ritual paraphernalia will not be on sale in the minimarkets so that the cultural existence can still go on,” he added. In the meantime, Acting Managing Director of PD Pasar Denpasar, I Made Westra, has a different opinion. The presence of minimarkets has no direct impacts on traditional markets because the core business is different and so are their customers. Traditional markets sell cane works, ritual paraphernalia and worship tools including canang (oblation) and others. “In other words, it has no impact. However, if there are traditional markets selling the necessities as sold in minimarkets, this may have an impact. Moreover, the minimarket is located next to traditional markets,” he explained. It is discernible from the turnover of the merchants, income of PD Pasar and the number of visits to traditional markets continues to grow. “There is an increase every year as indicated by the amount of parking vehicles,” he said. Annually, the number of visit increases by 5 to 10 percent. Moreover, during feast days the increase can reach 40 percent. (kmb42)

Excessive water consumption due to no supervision
DENPASAR - The rule on the use of underground water has actually existed. The problem is the absence of supervision by the licensing agency. As a result, water consumption becomes excessive and triggers the decrease of water quantity and quality. “The licensing agency should do supervision. If there is a violation, the municipal police will move to enforce the regional bylaw. Now, the enforcement is not strict. They will be panic when a problem rises. Supervision needs to be improved and continuous,” said the Head of the Bali Environment Agency, Gede Suarjana, in Denpasar, on Tuesday (Jun 6). Suarjana added that licensing agency is also obliged to provide coaching or should not leave its responsibility at all considering there has been indeed a decrease in the quantity and quality of water. Water discharge of rivers, lakes and other springs decreases. In addition, groundwater is also subject to pressures that can affect the quantity. In terms of quality, some parameters have increased such as the BOD, COD, nitrate and coli. “Excessive use of water also causes seawater intrusion. Environmentally, I have objection. There has been brackish water in some places due to the entry of seawater into mainland. It also needs the commitment of all parties,” he added. According to Suarjana, the pressure on water cannot be separated from the population growth that continues to increase reaching about 300,000 people per year. Based on the data of the WHO, everyone needs 150 liters of water per day for drinking, toilet and others. It is supported by excessive consumption pattern, less friendly lifestyle and increasingly smaller land cover rates. “We have to control water consumption, recycle water and make at least ten bio-pores in one house belonging to 80 square meters type,” he added. Suarjana also asked the industry, especially tourism, to do the same considering that most of the tourism industry utilizes underground water. Then, the bottled drinking water companies that also suck up the underground water are expected to contribute to the upstream area through their CSR program. “Formerly, the regulation on the underground water lies in the district government. With the presence of Law No.23/2014, the underground water is under authority of the province. The regulation of underground water has legal instrument in the province and district, including levies with a progressive system. The energy and mineral resources (ESDM) agency had once mapped the prone areas of underground water, including where there are substantial underground water reserves,” he said. Secretary of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said that Bali should start to utilize surface water and limit the use of underground water considering that surface water in Petanu and Unda River is still much wasted because of not being maximally exploited. In addition, there should be a clear regional bylaw stipulating that people are not allowed to use underground water more that certain capacity. More importantly, Bali must make a blue print so that development should not be over capacity with limited natural resources. “We have to start how to save water resources especially in the upstream area such as in lakes and rivers. Then, a technology should be made so that surface water like in the river will no longer be wasted,” he said. Kariyasa added that water should be used wisely. Therefore, the government needs to pay more attentions to rescue the upstream areas chiefly the lakes supplying the clean water. This PDI-P politician exemplified that there are water lettuces in Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan, silting and transfer of vegetation function. “Hard plants like coffee have now been replaced with crops such as cabbage, green mustard that causes sedimentation and landslides. There should be a protection. To avoid land conversion, the government should provide with subsidies. At the same time, there should be a dredging program and maintenance of the lake,” he said. two new bee hives each with a queen and some 10,000 busy bees making sustainable ‘Four Seasons Wild Sayan Honey’. Of the species apis cerana indigenous to Indonesia, the bees live in a secluded location only accessible by staff, surrounded by virgin jungle on a bank of the Ayung River amidst coconut palms and wild flowers. Their ‘villa’ hives have thatch-roofs and roof-top entries, mimicking the award-winning below-ground design of the resort’s pool villas. The hives are part of Indonesia’s first bee conservation and community enterprise program, Plan Bee Indonesia, a grassroots initiative launched in Bali to combat colony collapse disorder, the well-documented global threat to bees. Plan Bee has set up bee centres in remote West and North Bali, bringing together farmers and forest honey gatherers to join the fight. Through the co-operative, Plan Bee connects the farmers with new customers for their sustainably-harvested honey, engages in knowledge and skills sharing to minimize use of pesticides in farming, and installs new hives to increase the bee population. It offers the opportunity for businesses and individuals to sponsor hives and support the farmers, and has been endorsed by the Indonesian Beekeepers’ Association. Even moderate drinking linked to changes in brain structure, study finds
LONDON - Drinking even moderate amounts of alcohol is linked to changes in brain structure and an increased risk of worsening brain function, scientists said on Tuesday.
In a 30-year study that looked at the brains of 550 middle-aged heavy drinkers, moderate drinkers and teetotallers, the researchers found people drank more alcohol had a greater risk of hippocampal atrophy - a form of brain damage that affects memory and spatial navigation. People who drank more than 30 units a week on average had the highest risk, but even those who drank moderately - between 14 and 21 units a week - were far more likely than abstainers to have hippocampal atrophy, the scientists said. “And we found no support for a protective effect of light consumption on brain structure,” they added. The research team - from the University of Oxford and University College London - said their results supported a recent lowering of drinking limit guidelines in Britain, but posed questions about limits recommended in the United States. U.S. guidelines suggest that up to 24.5 units of alcohol a week is safe for men, but the study found increased risk of brain structure changes at just 14 to 21 units a week. A unit is defined as 10 millilitres (ml) of pure al-
cohol. There are roughly two in a large beer, nine in a bottle of wine and one in a 25 ml spirit shot. Killian Welch, a Royal Edinburgh Hospital neuropsychiatrist who was not directly involved in the study, said the results, published in the BMJ British Medical Journal, underlined “the argument that drinking habits many regard as normal have adverse consequences for health”. “We all use rationalisations to justify persistence with behaviours not in our long term interest. With (these results) justification of ‘moderate’ drinking on the grounds of brain health becomes a little harder,” he said. The study analysed data on weekly alcohol intake and cognitive performance measured repeatedly over 30 years between 1985 and 2015 for 550 healthy men and women with an average age of 43 at the start of the study. Brain function tests were carried out at regular intervals, and at the end of the study participants were given a MRI brain scan. After adjusting for several important potential confounders such as gender, education, social class, physical and social activity, smoking, stroke risk and medical history, the scientists found that higher alcohol consumption was associated with increased risk of brain function decline. Drinking more was also linked to poorer “white matter integrity” - a factor they described as critical when it comes to cognitive functioning. (rtr)

BOSTON - Public health policies have the potential to reduce heart disease in the U.S. and save nearly 250,000 lives over 15 years, researchers say. The kinds of policies they’re talking about would lower the price of fruit and vegetables, help lower-income families make better choices, impose taxes on sugary drinks and launch media campaigns, according to a report in the journal PLoS Medicine. “I think what our study does is highlight the potential power of food policies to reduce cardiovascular mortality and disparities in the U.S.,” said lead author Jonathan Pearson-Stuttard, of Imperial College London. Pearson-Stuttard and colleagues say large disparities exist along social and economic lines when it comes to diet and heart disease. While past research found policies could influence diets, the measurable effects on heart disease in the U.S. are unknown. “The key question we’re trying to answer overall is which policies are best buys for policymakers to consider,” said co-senior author Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston. Using a computer model, the researchers estimated what various policies might mean for heart disease in the U.S. between 2015
and 2030. Those national policies included a media campaign and a 10 percent tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The researchers also analyzed the effect of subsidizing the cost of fruits and vegetables, by 10 percent in general and by 30 percent for people on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. A national 10 percent subsidy on fruits and vegetables would be the most beneficial policy, with approximately 150,500 lives saved from deaths by heart disease over the 15-year study period, the authors estimate. A 30 percent subsidy for SNAP participants would likely save 35,100 lives, and a 10 percent soda tax would save 31,000 lives, they calculate. A year-long mass media campaign was estimated to save 25,800 lives. Mozaffarian said it’s interesting that a national soda tax would save only about a fifth of the lives saved by a national 10 percent subsidy of fruits and vegetables. “That’s not something that would be obvious without doing the analysis,” he said. The estimates also suggested that a targeted subsidy for SNAP participants, which has been tested in Massachusetts, would narrow the gap in heart disease rates between low-income and higher-income people by 8 percent. Accompanied by the Head of the Negara Environment Agency, I Ketut Kariadi Erawan, Regent Artha stated the way to keep the environment green and not-polluted should be carried out by waste management from the source. “When talking about garbage, it is certainly not inexhaustible. Therefore, I hope it could be started from the source (upstream) to downstream. Our officers on duty are assigned to take the garbage at residents’ home put in their trash can to be further transported to landfill. After that, the garbage will be sorted to be further transported to Peh landfill,” he explained. In addition, the cleanup program from the upstream is also carried out by empowering the waste banks having spread at villages through cooperation with village-owned enterprises (BUMDes) at each village so that the burden of Peh landfill will slightly reduce. Hopefully, the waste so far known as the source of problem can even become a blessing for society if managed properly. In the meantime, the handling from downstream sector by encouraging all elements of society is held through cleanup implementation in the mountains by preserving nature as well as in the river and beach area by cleanup activities. “Welcoming the Environment Day falling every June 5, we will prepare mass movement by involving all the elements of society to carry out environmental cleanup action. 70 percent of mothers experience excessive cholesterol
DENPASAR — Of the pregnant women, 70 percent are predicted to have excessive cholesterol. This condition is very hazardous for pregnancy as well as the mother. Excessive cholesterol can cause eclampsia (pregnancy intoxication) and at risk of maternal and infant death. In Bali, approximately 20 percent of maternal deaths are caused by preeclampsia (high blood pressure and protein in the urine). Not long ago, a researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Dr. Anak Agung Ngurah Jaya Kusuma, just completed his dissertation on sterol regulatory elementbinding protein (SREBP 2). It is a disrupted fat regulatory factor so that many pregnant women experience cholesterol increase. The hazardous cholesterol belongs to low-density lipoprotein (LDL). This cholesterol causes blockage of blood flow in placenta and causes the placenta to be deprived of oxygen (hypoxia) and further causes the release of harmful free radicals for endothelial cells. Damaged endothelial cells throughout the body cause organ failure. If untreated, it can cause mother and the baby to be at risk of death. High cholesterol in pregnant women is very hazardous
because it indicates there is damage in the regulator, namely the SREBP 2 and it results in blockage of blood vessels called acute atherosis. “The problem is that not all pregnant women check their cholesterol and have not been borne by BPJS health insurance because it is not included in a screening policy,” he said. This former director of medical and nursing affairs of Sanglah Hospital found that high fat content is a risk factor for preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is one of the causes to death of pregnant women. “So far, there are many theories about the cause of preeclampsia that are difficult to prove,” he said. The study also opened new insights about the importance of diet for pregnant women. They should eat with a balanced composition of nutrients consisting of 50 percent or 60 percent of carbohydrates, 30 percent or 40 percent of fat and the remaining is protein. The fat to be reduced and that can be eaten is essential fat consisting of omega 3 and omega 6. “They are important to prevent preeclampsia and very important to stimulate nervous cells of the brain, baby’s eyes and its intellectual development,” he explained. Many studies have showed that children whose mothers
do not get omega 3 and 6 intake during pregnancy, they will have disorder of brain nervous, eye and intellectual in their children. He himself began focusing on the research of preeclampsia since 2003. “My research is reinforcing that fatty foods should be reduced in number and the quality is improved with those containing omega 3 and 6,” he said The substance can also be obtained if the mother consumes one to two pieces of fish such as tuna, et cetera containing omega 3 and 6. “Do not consume ferocious and predatory fish such as shark and the like because they contain a lot of mercury,” he added. Durian is also said to contain cholesterol, although it is good cholesterol. “But if the bad cholesterol is higher, it remains risky,” he concluded. However, there is no scientific evidence that durian raises bad cholesterol. “I am currently developing how to detect early that a pregnant woman will have preeclampsia. The name of the method I develop is the multivariable predictive model. It is under development. This method will be able to detect early preeclampsia so that it is easy to handle,” he concluded. GIANYAR - Following the raid of drug dealer at Akasaka Karaoke with the evidence of 19,000 ecstasy pills, Chief of Bali Police, Peter R. Australia flags tougher parole laws in wake of Melbourne siege
SYDNEY - The Australian government signalled a drive to reform parole laws on Wednesday, including a ban on parole for violent offenders who have any links to extremism, after a deadly siege claimed by the Islamic State group. Police shot dead gunman Yacqub Khayre, who they said had a long criminal history, on Monday night after he killed a man in an apartment block in Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, and held a woman hostage for several hours. Attorney-General George Brandis said it was clear that Khayre, 29, who was granted parole in November after being convicted over a violent home invasion, should never have been released from prison. “I think the public are entitled to expect that people who present that level of danger to the public, and who have a terrorism background, there should be a presumption against bail or parole except in a very clear case,” Brandis told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio on Wednesday.
Brandis and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull both launched stinging criticism of state governments, which are responsible for parole laws, in the wake of the Melbourne attack. Police are treating the siege as an “act of terrorism” after Islamic State claimed one of its fighters was responsible. Senior officials said Khayre had been acquitted of a plot to attack a Sydney army base in 2009. He was also accused of travelling to Somalia, where he was born, to seek a religious ruling in support of the planned 2009 attack. MARAWI CITY - Philippines troops thwarted an original plan drawn up by the Islamist militants now holed up in Marawi City to “spread terror” in a rampage of violence that would have given them full control of the southern town, the military said on Wednesday. “There was indeed a bigger plan and it was supposed to wreak more havoc,” military spokesman Restituto Padilla told a news conference as aerial bombing resumed against fighters who have sworn allegiance to the ultra-radical Islamic State. Philippine senators said members of the upper house were last week shown a video of the militants, led by a group known as Maute, plotting a far more sophisticated siege of Marawi City than the attack they launched there on May 23. “It was clear that these terrorists, the Maute group, their end goal is to make Marawi ... independent, or to separate from the republic,” Senator JV Ejercito told Reuters. “With a plan like this, this is already rebellion and a threat to national security, so declaration of martial law is justified,” he said, referring to the martial law declared by President Rodrigo Duterte across the southern island of Mindanao when the siege began. The Associated Press (AP) first reported on the seized video footage, which showed Isnilon Hapilon - proclaimed last year by Islamic State as its “emir” of Southeast Asia - and others planning to take hostages from a school, seal off roads and capture a highway.

SLOUGH - British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday she would be willing to weaken human rights protections to make it easier to deport or curb the movements of suspected militants who there is not enough evidence to prosecute.
May used one of her final speeches in an election campaign which has turned into a debate about national security to step up her rhetoric against Islamist extremism, pledging to ensure security services had the powers they needed. It comes days after Britain’s third major terror attack this year, in which seven people were killed when militants ploughed a van into pedestrians and then started stabbing people and slitting throats in a busy area of central London. May said authorities needed to be able to do more, including to restrict the movements of suspected militants when police had enough evidence to suspect they presented a threat, but not enough to prosecute them. “If our human rights laws stop us from doing it,
we will change the laws so we can do it,” she said to cheers and applause at an election rally. May, a former interior minister, has previously been criticised for scrapping house arrest rules known as ‘control orders’, which were coming under regular legal challenge. In Tuesday’s speech, she also called for longer prison sentences for people convicted of terrorist offences, and to make it easier to deport foreign suspected militants. In an interview with the Sun newspaper, May said she would consider extending to 28 days the length of time police can hold people they suspect to be terrorists for questioning. It was reduced to 14 days in 2011. May has promised that if she wins Thursday’s election, Britain would remain a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights until 2022, but Tuesday’s remarks signal she would look at ways around the rules if necessary. WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump took sides in a deep rift in the Arab world on Tuesday, praising Middle East countries’ actions against American ally Qatar over Islamist militants even though the tiny Gulf state hosts the largest U.S. air base in the region. Trump wrote on Twitter that his recent trip to the Middle East was “already paying off” and cast an antiIslamist speech he made in Saudi Arabia as the inspiration for a decision by Arab powers to sever ties with Qatar in protest at what they say is the Gulf nation’s support for terrorism. “So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off. They said they would take a hard line on funding extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!” Trump wrote on Twitter. Qatar vehemently denies the accusations. Trump later spoke by phone with Saudi King Salman and stressed the need for Gulf unity, a senior White House official said. “His (Trump’s) message was that we need unity in the region to fight extremist ideology and terrorist financing. It’s important that the Gulf be united for peace and security in the region,” the senior official told Reuters. U.S. officials were blindsided by Saudi Arabia’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Qatar in a coordinated move with Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), current and former officials in Washington told Reuters. The United States was not informed of the decision until just before it was announced, the State Department said. Even as Trump applauded the Arab countries’ move, the Pentagon on Tuesday renewed praise of Qatar for hosting U.S. forces and its “enduring commitment to regional security.” Some 8,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed at al Udeid in Qatar, the largest U.S. air base in the Middle East and a staging ground for U.S.-led
strikes on the Islamic State militant group that has seized parts of Syria and Iraq. U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis spoke on Tuesday by phone with his Qatari counterpart, a Pentagon spokesman said, without disclosing the details of their discussion. Trump’s tweet appeared at odds with comments from U.S. officials who had said on Monday that the United States would quietly try to calm the waters between Saudi Arabia and Qatar because Qatar is too important to U.S. military and diplomatic interests to be isolated. Qatar has for years parlayed its enormous gas wealth and media strength into broad influence in the region. But Gulf Arab neighbours and Egypt have long been irked by its maverick stances and support for the Muslim Brotherhood, which they regard as a political enemy. Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that Qatar needed to take several steps, including ending its support of Palestinian militant group Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, to restore ties with other key Arab states, which also cut transport links. “We’ve decided to take steps to make clear that enough is enough,” Adel Al-Jubeir told journalists in Paris. He said the “fairly large cost” on Qatar’s economy would convince it to change its policies. The campaign to isolate Qatar disrupted trade in commodities from crude oil to metals and food, and deepened fears of a possible shock to the global natural gas market, where it is a major player. House supports government`s approach to resolve Arab-Qatar issues
JAKARTA - The House of Representatives Commission I fully supports the Indonesian governments stance that encourages seven Arab countries, which have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, to employ the mechanism of dialog and reconciliation to solve problems. “Dialog and reconciliation is the best avenue in resolving this issue and in maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East region,” Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives Abdul Kharis Almasyhari stated in a press release received in Jakarta on Wednesday. Based on Indonesias free and active foreign policy commitment, dialog and reconciliation to solve problems in the Middle East is viewed as being an appropriate step towards friendly countries, Almasyhari noted. As earlier reported, seven countries in the Arab Gulf region have severed diplomatic ties with Qatar following political tensions between Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The governments of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, and the Maldives have severed diplomatic ties with Qatar. According to Almasyhari, the diplomatic relations were cut due to Qatars relations with Iran and the alleged support of both countries to terrorist groups, which are believed to be working to disrupt the Gulf region. Saudi Arabia has accused Qatar of supporting Iranian-backed terrorist groups, such as the Ikhwanul
Muslimin group, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and Al-Qaeda. Almasyhari, who is a member of the House of Representatives from the PKS faction, expressed concern and hoped political tensions in the Middle East region would soon subside and be resolved. “In the month of Ramadhan, we want peace. Tensions in the Middle East are a concern. Hopefully, the tensions can be immediately brought under control,” he noted. Almasyhari also expressed full support to the Indonesian governments stance, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the hope that all countries would uphold the principles of international relations, such as respecting each countrys sovereignty and not interfering in the internal affairs of other nations. “I think Indonesia and Turkey can serve as mediators in the reconciliation process,” he said. According to Almasyhari, Qatar has a strategic role, both as a source of foreign exchange through Indonesian labor and as having a strategic role in resolving the conflict in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue. Almasyhari also reminded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take immediate steps to anticipate the fate of Indonesian citizens in Qatar and Indonesian minor hajj (umroh) pilgrims who have taken Qatar Airways flights since seven countries have severed diplomatic relations with Qatar and have closed access to the Gulf state, either by land, air, or sea. BUKITTINGGI - Mount Marapi, which is located between Agam District and Tanah Datar District of West Sumatera Province, has erupted 45 times since Sunday (June 4), with volcanic dust reaching various heights. According to the officer of Volcanic Monitor Post in Marapi, Hartanto, here on Tuesday, the latest eruptions occurred five times on Tuesday from 00.01 am to 06.00 am. The officer noted that the mount erupted six times last Sunday and 34 times on Monday. “The Marapi erupted and spurted volcanic dust as well as caused volcanic earthquake. The status is at level II,” Hartanto remarked. Hartanto stated that the eruption was still in medium alert.
He added that Marapi had been under alert since Aug 2011, and it showed a lot of shallow volcanic activity for the past two months. “We ask people to refrain from any activity at a radius of 3 kilometers till the peak. We warn the climbers too,” Hartanto revealed. The officer noted that there were no residents who lived within the radius of 3 kilometers to the peak. Additionally, the Head of West Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency Nasridal Patria remarked that at least four districts and cities have prepared to handle the eruption. Qatar’s unifying World Cup vision erodes as nations cut ties
Qatar’s bid for the 2022 World Cup was based on a powerful vision that soccer could unite the Middle East. “Just think together of what we can achieve together,” Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the wife of the Qatar’s then-ruler, told FIFA voters in 2010. She ambitiously forecast a “culture of peace across our region through football,” With five years until kickoff, that optimism is rapidly disintegrating after Arab neighbors severed ties on Monday with the tiny nation that turned to sports to buttress its global status.
Soccer’s world governing body, FIFA, is hoping the regional rifts are healed long before there’s any need to contemplate any change of host, a move that would deal a heavy blow to Qatar’s reputation and economy as it is investing more than $150 billion on infrastructure to handle the World Cup. For now, FIFA is predictably sidestepping detailed questions about the impact of the decision by Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to cast Qatar adrift diplomatically. Qatar’s Gulf neighbors have accused Qatar of supporting terror groups, interfering in the sovereign affairs of Arab countries and backing groups that undermine political stability. FIFA has reiterated that it maintains regular contact with Qatar. “One thing is certain, the world’s football community should agree that large tournaments cannot be played in countries that actively support terror,” said Reinhard Grindel, president of the German football federation and a member of FIFA’s ruling council. Qatar denies funding extremists, but that hasn’t stopped its neighbors from implementing punitive measures that impact people and businesses across
the region, including soccer fans. FIFA was dragged into the backlash against the 2022 World Cup host nation on Tuesday when Qatar’s state-funded broadcaster beIN Sports appeared to be blocked in the UAE. With beIN holding the broadcasting rights to FIFA events across the Middle East and North Africa, the ongoing Under-20 World Cup in South Korea will now be unavailable for viewers in the UAE. FIFA said it was in contact with the broadcaster and was monitoring the situation. FIFA is also in partnership with Qatar’s flagship carrier. Qatar Airways, which signed up as a World Cup sponsor last month , has been forced to reroute journeys over Iranian and Turkish airspace after Saudi Arabia and Egypt blocked Qatari flights from using their airspace. A soccer sponsorship has already been affected, with Saudi club Al-Ahli terminating its deal with the airline. The escalation of the crisis in the Persian Gulf will have underscored to FIFA just how precarious the region is, and the geographical weakness of oil-and-gas rich Qatar. The desert nation is heavily reliant on food imports , predominantly through its border with Saudi Arabia, where hundreds of trucks transporting food and construction materials have now been stopped from entering. A sustained blockade could hit the construction boom required to transform the sparse nation. An entire city is being built to stage the final. Not a single stadium was ready at the time of bidding, and only one venue has so far been completed as Qatar prepares to welcome the 32 teams. Qatar has long been heavily reliant on a massive workforce of migrant laborers from Asia to expand its infrastructure. The Philippines has temporarily suspended the deployment of Filipino workers to Doha, but said there is no plan yet to repatriate the more than 200,000 existing members of the labor force. Being handed the World Cup made working, living con-
ditions and employment rights in Qatar a global concern. Practices such as the “kafala” sponsorship system that binds workers to their employer are in place across the region, but activists have largely only shone the spotlight on Qatar and the human cost of hosting the World Cup. Qatar has responded to the pressure by compelling companies to adopt labor reforms . It’s one of the consequences of hosting a major sporting event that Qatar did not seem to anticipate amid the joy of beating the United States, Australia, Japan and South Korea in the 2010 vote. Qatar has the global attention, but it’s largely been unwelcome. From the moment then-FIFA President Sepp Blatter pulled Qatar’s name out of the envelope in Zurich, the whiff of corruption has hung over Qatar’s bid, coupled with concerns about heat that forced the tournament to be shifted into the heart of the European season in November-December 2022. Despite being exonerated by FIFA’s ethics investigators, speculation about Qatar being stripped of the hosting rights or being boycotted by some countries has persisted, without the call coming from any authoritative soccer body or government. Significantly, the federation of World Cup holder Germany is not endorsing such an extreme move. “There are still five years before the World Cup kicks off,” Grindel said. “Political solutions must take precedence over threats of boycott in this time.” Not all the countries currently embroiled in the dispute with Qatar are World Cup regulars, so there is slim chance of the entire bloc qualifying for the 2022 tournament. But Qatar will be hosting athletes from across the region when it stages the world track and field championships in 2019. “We are talking to our teams in the region to properly understand the implications for both the short term and long term,” the IAAF said. Qatar’s unifying World Cup vision erodes as nations cut ties
Qatar’s bid for the 2022 World Cup was based on a powerful vision that soccer could unite the Middle East. “Just think together of what we can achieve together,” Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the wife of the Qatar’s then-ruler, told FIFA voters in 2010. She ambitiously forecast a “culture of peace across our region through football,” With five years until kickoff, that optimism is rapidly disintegrating after Arab neighbors severed ties on Monday with the tiny nation that turned to sports to buttress its global status.
Soccer’s world governing body, FIFA, is hoping the regional rifts are healed long before there’s any need to contemplate any change of host, a move that would deal a heavy blow to Qatar’s reputation and economy as it is investing more than $150 billion on infrastructure to handle the World Cup. For now, FIFA is predictably sidestepping detailed questions about the impact of the decision by Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to cast Qatar adrift diplomatically. Qatar’s Gulf neighbors have accused Qatar of supporting terror groups, interfering in the sovereign affairs of Arab countries and backing groups that undermine political stability. FIFA has reiterated that it maintains regular contact with Qatar. “One thing is certain, the world’s football community should agree that large tournaments cannot be played in countries that actively support terror,” said Reinhard Grindel, president of the German football federation and a member of FIFA’s ruling council. Qatar denies funding extremists, but that hasn’t stopped its neighbors from implementing punitive measures that impact people and businesses across
the region, including soccer fans. FIFA was dragged into the backlash against the 2022 World Cup host nation on Tuesday when Qatar’s state-funded broadcaster beIN Sports appeared to be blocked in the UAE. With beIN holding the broadcasting rights to FIFA events across the Middle East and North Africa, the ongoing Under-20 World Cup in South Korea will now be unavailable for viewers in the UAE. FIFA said it was in contact with the broadcaster and was monitoring the situation. FIFA is also in partnership with Qatar’s flagship carrier. Qatar Airways, which signed up as a World Cup sponsor last month , has been forced to reroute journeys over Iranian and Turkish airspace after Saudi Arabia and Egypt blocked Qatari flights from using their airspace. A soccer sponsorship has already been affected, with Saudi club Al-Ahli terminating its deal with the airline. The escalation of the crisis in the Persian Gulf will have underscored to FIFA just how precarious the region is, and the geographical weakness of oil-and-gas rich Qatar. The desert nation is heavily reliant on food imports , predominantly through its border with Saudi Arabia, where hundreds of trucks transporting food and construction materials have now been stopped from entering. A sustained blockade could hit the construction boom required to transform the sparse nation. An entire city is being built to stage the final. Not a single stadium was ready at the time of bidding, and only one venue has so far been completed as Qatar prepares to welcome the 32 teams. Qatar has long been heavily reliant on a massive workforce of migrant laborers from Asia to expand its infrastructure. The Philippines has temporarily suspended the deployment of Filipino workers to Doha, but said there is no plan yet to repatriate the more than 200,000 existing members of the labor force. Being handed the World Cup made working, living con-
ditions and employment rights in Qatar a global concern. Practices such as the “kafala” sponsorship system that binds workers to their employer are in place across the region, but activists have largely only shone the spotlight on Qatar and the human cost of hosting the World Cup. Qatar has responded to the pressure by compelling companies to adopt labor reforms . It’s one of the consequences of hosting a major sporting event that Qatar did not seem to anticipate amid the joy of beating the United States, Australia, Japan and South Korea in the 2010 vote. Qatar has the global attention, but it’s largely been unwelcome. From the moment then-FIFA President Sepp Blatter pulled Qatar’s name out of the envelope in Zurich, the whiff of corruption has hung over Qatar’s bid, coupled with concerns about heat that forced the tournament to be shifted into the heart of the European season in November-December 2022. Despite being exonerated by FIFA’s ethics investigators, speculation about Qatar being stripped of the hosting rights or being boycotted by some countries has persisted, without the call coming from any authoritative soccer body or government. Significantly, the federation of World Cup holder Germany is not endorsing such an extreme move. “There are still five years before the World Cup kicks off,” Grindel said. “Political solutions must take precedence over threats of boycott in this time.” Not all the countries currently embroiled in the dispute with Qatar are World Cup regulars, so there is slim chance of the entire bloc qualifying for the 2022 tournament. But Qatar will be hosting athletes from across the region when it stages the world track and field championships in 2019. “We are talking to our teams in the region to properly understand the implications for both the short term and long term,” the IAAF said. May said authorities needed to be able to do more, including to restrict the movements of suspected militants when police had enough evidence to suspect they presented a threat, but not enough to prosecute them. “If our human rights laws stop us from doing it,
we will change the laws so we can do it,” she said to cheers and applause at an election rally. May, a former interior minister, has previously been criticised for scrapping house arrest rules known as ‘control orders’, which were coming under regular legal challenge. In Tuesday’s speech, she also called for longer prison sentences for people convicted of terrorist offences, and to make it easier to deport foreign suspected militants. In an interview with the Sun newspaper, May said she would consider extending to 28 days the length of time police can hold people they suspect to be terrorists for questioning. It was reduced to 14 days in 2011. May has promised that if she wins Thursday’s election, Britain would remain a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights until 2022, but Tuesday’s remarks signal she would look at ways around the rules if necessary. Trump wrote on Twitter that his recent trip to the Middle East was “already paying off” and cast an antiIslamist speech he made in Saudi Arabia as the inspiration for a decision by Arab powers to sever ties with Qatar in protest at what they say is the Gulf nation’s support for terrorism. “So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off. They said they would take a hard line on funding extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!” Trump wrote on Twitter. Qatar vehemently denies the accusations. Trump later spoke by phone with Saudi King Salman and stressed the need for Gulf unity, a senior White House official said. “His (Trump’s) message was that we need unity in the region to fight extremist ideology and terrorist financing. It’s important that the Gulf be united for peace and security in the region,” the senior official told Reuters. U.S. officials were blindsided by Saudi Arabia’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Qatar in a coordinated move with Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), current and former officials in Washington told Reuters. The United States was not informed of the decision until just before it was announced, the State Department said. House supports government`s approach to resolve Arab-Qatar issues
JAKARTA - The House of Representatives Commission I fully supports the Indonesian governments stance that encourages seven Arab countries, which have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, to employ the mechanism of dialog and reconciliation to solve problems. “Dialog and reconciliation is the best avenue in resolving this issue and in maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East region,” Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives Abdul Kharis Almasyhari stated in a press release received in Jakarta on Wednesday. Based on Indonesias free and active foreign policy commitment, dialog and reconciliation to solve problems in the Middle East is viewed as being an appropriate step towards friendly countries, Almasyhari noted. As earlier reported, seven countries in the Arab Gulf region have severed diplomatic ties with Qatar following political tensions between Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The governments of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, and the Maldives have severed diplomatic ties with Qatar. Almasyhari also expressed full support to the Indonesian governments stance, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the hope that all countries would uphold the principles of international relations, such as respecting each countrys sovereignty and not interfering in the internal affairs of other nations. “I think Indonesia and Turkey can serve as mediators in the reconciliation process,” he said. According to Almasyhari, Qatar has a strategic role, both as a source of foreign exchange through Indonesian labor and as having a strategic role in resolving the conflict in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue. Almasyhari also reminded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take immediate steps to anticipate the fate of Indonesian citizens in Qatar and Indonesian minor hajj (umroh) pilgrims who have taken Qatar Airways flights since seven countries have severed diplomatic relations with Qatar and have closed access to the Gulf state, either by land, air, or sea. BUKITTINGGI - Mount Marapi, which is located between Agam District and Tanah Datar District of West Sumatera Province, has erupted 45 times since Sunday (June 4), with volcanic dust reaching various heights. According to the officer of Volcanic Monitor Post in Marapi, Hartanto, here on Tuesday, the latest eruptions occurred five times on Tuesday from 00.01 am to 06.00 am. The officer noted that the mount erupted six times last Sunday and 34 times on Monday. “The Marapi erupted and spurted volcanic dust as well as caused volcanic earthquake. The status is at level II,” Hartanto remarked. Hartanto stated that the eruption was still in medium alert.
He added that Marapi had been under alert since Aug 2011, and it showed a lot of shallow volcanic activity for the past two months. “We ask people to refrain from any activity at a radius of 3 kilometers till the peak. We warn the climbers too,” Hartanto revealed. The officer noted that there were no residents who lived within the radius of 3 kilometers to the peak. Additionally, the Head of West Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency Nasridal Patria remarked that at least four districts and cities have prepared to handle the eruption. Australia flags tougher parole laws in wake of Melbourne siege
SYDNEY - The Australian government signalled a drive to reform parole laws on Wednesday, including a ban on parole for violent offenders who have any links to extremism, after a deadly siege claimed by the Islamic State group. Police shot dead gunman Yacqub Khayre, who they said had a long criminal history, on Monday night after he killed a man in an apartment block in Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, and held a woman hostage for several hours. Attorney-General George Brandis said it was clear that Khayre, 29, who was granted parole in November after being convicted over a violent home invasion, should never have been released from prison. “I think the public are entitled to expect that people who present that level of danger to the public, and who have a terrorism background, there should be a presumption against bail or parole except in a very clear case,” Brandis told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio on Wednesday.
Brandis and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull both launched stinging criticism of state governments, which are responsible for parole laws, in the wake of the Melbourne attack. Police are treating the siege as an “act of terrorism” after Islamic State claimed one of its fighters was responsible. MARAWI CITY - Philippines troops thwarted an original plan drawn up by the Islamist militants now holed up in Marawi City to “spread terror” in a rampage of violence that would have given them full control of the southern town, the military said on Wednesday. “There was indeed a bigger plan and it was supposed to wreak more havoc,” military spokesman Restituto Padilla told a news conference as aerial bombing resumed against fighters who have sworn allegiance to the ultra-radical Islamic State. Philippine senators said members of the upper house were last week shown a video of the militants, led by a group known as Maute, plotting a far more sophisticated siege of Marawi City than the attack they launched there on May 23. “It was clear that these terrorists, the Maute group, their end goal is to make Marawi ... independent, or to separate from the republic,” Senator JV Ejercito told Reuters. “With a plan like this, this is already rebellion and a threat to national security, so declaration of martial law is justified,” he said, referring to the martial law declared by President Rodrigo Duterte across the southern island of Mindanao when the siege began. The Associated Press (AP) first reported on the seized video footage, which showed Isnilon Hapilon - proclaimed last year by Islamic State as its “emir” of Southeast Asia - and others planning to take hostages from a school, seal off roads and capture a highway.

Even moderate drinking linked to changes in brain structure, study finds
LONDON - Drinking even moderate amounts of alcohol is linked to changes in brain structure and an increased risk of worsening brain function, scientists said on Tuesday.
In a 30-year study that looked at the brains of 550 middle-aged heavy drinkers, moderate drinkers and teetotallers, the researchers found people drank more alcohol had a greater risk of hippocampal atrophy - a form of brain damage that affects memory and spatial navigation. People who drank more than 30 units a week on average had the highest risk, but even those who drank moderately - between 14 and 21 units a week - were far more likely than abstainers to have hippocampal atrophy, the scientists said. “And we found no support for a protective effect of light consumption on brain structure,” they added. The research team - from the University of Oxford and University College London - said their results supported a recent lowering of drinking limit guidelines in Britain, but posed questions about limits recommended in the United States. U.S. guidelines suggest that up to 24.5 units of alcohol a week is safe for men, but the study found increased risk of brain structure changes at just 14 to 21 units a week. A unit is defined as 10 millilitres (ml) of pure al-
cohol. There are roughly two in a large beer, nine in a bottle of wine and one in a 25 ml spirit shot. Killian Welch, a Royal Edinburgh Hospital neuropsychiatrist who was not directly involved in the study, said the results, published in the BMJ British Medical Journal, underlined “the argument that drinking habits many regard as normal have adverse consequences for health”. “We all use rationalisations to justify persistence with behaviours not in our long term interest. With (these results) justification of ‘moderate’ drinking on the grounds of brain health becomes a little harder,” he said. The study analysed data on weekly alcohol intake and cognitive performance measured repeatedly over 30 years between 1985 and 2015 for 550 healthy men and women with an average age of 43 at the start of the study. Brain function tests were carried out at regular intervals, and at the end of the study participants were given a MRI brain scan. After adjusting for several important potential confounders such as gender, education, social class, physical and social activity, smoking, stroke risk and medical history, the scientists found that higher alcohol consumption was associated with increased risk of brain function decline. Drinking more was also linked to poorer “white matter integrity” - a factor they described as critical when it comes to cognitive functioning. (rtr)

The kinds of policies they’re talking about would lower the price of fruit and vegetables, help lower-income families make better choices, impose taxes on sugary drinks and launch media campaigns, according to a report in the journal PLoS Medicine. “I think what our study does is highlight the potential power of food policies to reduce cardiovascular mortality and disparities in the U.S.,” said lead author Jonathan Pearson-Stuttard, of Imperial College London. Pearson-Stuttard and colleagues say large disparities exist along social and economic lines when it comes to diet and heart disease. While past research found policies could influence diets, the measurable effects on heart disease in the U.S. are unknown. “The key question we’re trying to answer overall is which policies are best buys for policymakers to consider,” said co-senior author Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston. Using a computer model, the researchers estimated what various policies might mean for heart disease in the U.S. between 2015
and 2030. Those national policies included a media campaign and a 10 percent tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The researchers also analyzed the effect of subsidizing the cost of fruits and vegetables, by 10 percent in general and by 30 percent for people on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. A national 10 percent subsidy on fruits and vegetables would be the most beneficial policy, with approximately 150,500 lives saved from deaths by heart disease over the 15-year study period, the authors estimate. A 30 percent subsidy for SNAP participants would likely save 35,100 lives, and a 10 percent soda tax would save 31,000 lives, they calculate. A year-long mass media campaign was estimated to save 25,800 lives. Mozaffarian said it’s interesting that a national soda tax would save only about a fifth of the lives saved by a national 10 percent subsidy of fruits and vegetables. “That’s not something that would be obvious without doing the analysis,” he said. The estimates also suggested that a targeted subsidy for SNAP participants, which has been tested in Massachusetts, would narrow the gap in heart disease rates between low-income and higher-income people by 8 percent. Accompanied by the Head of the Negara Environment Agency, I Ketut Kariadi Erawan, Regent Artha stated the way to keep the environment green and not-polluted should be carried out by waste management from the source. “When talking about garbage, it is certainly not inexhaustible. Therefore, I hope it could be started from the source (upstream) to downstream. Our officers on duty are assigned to take the garbage at residents’ home put in their trash can to be further transported to landfill. After that, the garbage will be sorted to be further transported to Peh landfill,” he explained. In addition, the cleanup program from the upstream is also carried out by empowering the waste banks having spread at villages through cooperation with village-owned enterprises (BUMDes) at each village so that the burden of Peh landfill will slightly reduce. Hopefully, the waste so far known as the source of problem can even become a blessing for society if managed properly. In the meantime, the handling from downstream sector by encouraging all elements of society is held through cleanup implementation in the mountains by preserving nature as well as in the river and beach area by cleanup activities. “Welcoming the Environment Day falling every June 5, we will prepare mass movement by involving all the elements of society to carry out environmental cleanup action. 70 percent of mothers experience excessive cholesterol
DENPASAR — Of the pregnant women, 70 percent are predicted to have excessive cholesterol. This condition is very hazardous for pregnancy as well as the mother. Excessive cholesterol can cause eclampsia (pregnancy intoxication) and at risk of maternal and infant death. In Bali, approximately 20 percent of maternal deaths are caused by preeclampsia (high blood pressure and protein in the urine). Not long ago, a researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Dr. Anak Agung Ngurah Jaya Kusuma, just completed his dissertation on sterol regulatory elementbinding protein (SREBP 2). It is a disrupted fat regulatory factor so that many pregnant women experience cholesterol increase. The hazardous cholesterol belongs to low-density lipoprotein (LDL). This cholesterol causes blockage of blood flow in placenta and causes the placenta to be deprived of oxygen (hypoxia) and further causes the release of harmful free radicals for endothelial cells. Damaged endothelial cells throughout the body cause organ failure. If untreated, it can cause mother and the baby to be at risk of death. High cholesterol in pregnant women is very hazardous
because it indicates there is damage in the regulator, namely the SREBP 2 and it results in blockage of blood vessels called acute atherosis. “The problem is that not all pregnant women check their cholesterol and have not been borne by BPJS health insurance because it is not included in a screening policy,” he said. This former director of medical and nursing affairs of Sanglah Hospital found that high fat content is a risk factor for preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is one of the causes to death of pregnant women. “So far, there are many theories about the cause of preeclampsia that are difficult to prove,” he said. The study also opened new insights about the importance of diet for pregnant women. They should eat with a balanced composition of nutrients consisting of 50 percent or 60 percent of carbohydrates, 30 percent or 40 percent of fat and the remaining is protein. The fat to be reduced and that can be eaten is essential fat consisting of omega 3 and omega 6. “They are important to prevent preeclampsia and very important to stimulate nervous cells of the brain, baby’s eyes and its intellectual development,” he explained. Many studies have showed that children whose mothers
do not get omega 3 and 6 intake during pregnancy, they will have disorder of brain nervous, eye and intellectual in their children. He himself began focusing on the research of preeclampsia since 2003. “My research is reinforcing that fatty foods should be reduced in number and the quality is improved with those containing omega 3 and 6,” he said The substance can also be obtained if the mother consumes one to two pieces of fish such as tuna, et cetera containing omega 3 and 6. “Do not consume ferocious and predatory fish such as shark and the like because they contain a lot of mercury,” he added. Durian is also said to contain cholesterol, although it is good cholesterol. “But if the bad cholesterol is higher, it remains risky,” he concluded. However, there is no scientific evidence that durian raises bad cholesterol. “I am currently developing how to detect early that a pregnant woman will have preeclampsia. The name of the method I develop is the multivariable predictive model. It is under development. This method will be able to detect early preeclampsia so that it is easy to handle,” he concluded. Less ritual paraphernalia on sale at minimarkets
DENPASAR - Mushrooming minimarket or modern market gradually makes merchants in traditional markets go bankrupt. Moreover, their presence has reached directly the community like the implementation of cheap bazaar. Surely, this presence will grab the segment of merchants in traditional markets. Therefore, the drafting plan that forbids minimarkets from entering settlement by the ministry of economic affair coordinator is welcomed by the market management. Chairman of the Denpasar Market Chief Forum, I Nyoman Suwarta, when met on Monday (Jun 5) stated if the regulation will be really made, it will be good because there is partiality of the government to traditional market. It is okay for people to make business, but if they make the SME and small merchants go bankrupt, certainly it is not good for economic equity. “Do not disguise by organizing bazaar during feast days by selling particular products at cheaper prices. If willing to help the SMEs and small merchants, they (minimarkets) may be able to provide stocks of goods so that they can be cheaper in traditional market. They should never come down to invade the existence of traditional market with the excuse of helping the community,” he said. Nevertheless, Suwarta, who is also Chief of Pasar Agung of Peninjoan customary village, appealed to traditional market to make improvement. Arranging the market, improving sanitation and providing training for merchants have become a daily agenda. Secretary of Market Management Forum who is also Chief of Pulakerti Market, I Wayan Agus Indrawan, added that as the market management he welcomes it, but it needs to be followed up with lower rules such as regional bylaw (Perda) and mayoral regulation.
He considered that proliferation of the markets does not directly affect the existence of traditional markets especially when the economic condition is sluggish. Agus observed that market activity began to be rather sluggish since 2017. Fortunately, minimarket has not sold various kinds of ritual paraphernalia and its ingredients. “So far, they still sell consumer goods like foods and snacks. Hopefully, the regulation can govern about it, so the type of merchandise can be limited,” he hoped. Traditional market is characterized by remaining presence of bargaining to merchandise on sale like ritual paraphernalia. “Hopefully, this ritual paraphernalia will not be on sale in the minimarkets so that the cultural existence can still go on,” he added. In the meantime, Acting Managing Director of PD Pasar Denpasar, I Made Westra, has a different opinion. The presence of minimarkets has no direct impacts on traditional markets because the core business is different and so are their customers. Traditional markets sell cane works, ritual paraphernalia and worship tools including canang (oblation) and others. “In other words, it has no impact. However, if there are traditional markets selling the necessities as sold in minimarkets, this may have an impact. Moreover, the minimarket is located next to traditional markets,” he explained. It is discernible from the turnover of the merchants, income of PD Pasar and the number of visits to traditional markets continues to grow. “There is an increase every year as indicated by the amount of parking vehicles,” he said. Excessive water consumption due to no supervision
DENPASAR - The rule on the use of underground water has actually existed. The problem is the absence of supervision by the licensing agency. As a result, water consumption becomes excessive and triggers the decrease of water quantity and quality. “The licensing agency should do supervision. If there is a violation, the municipal police will move to enforce the regional bylaw. Now, the enforcement is not strict. They will be panic when a problem rises. Supervision needs to be improved and continuous,” said the Head of the Bali Environment Agency, Gede Suarjana, in Denpasar, on Tuesday (Jun 6). Suarjana added that licensing agency is also obliged to provide coaching or should not leave its responsibility at all considering there has been indeed a decrease in the quantity and quality of water. Water discharge of rivers, lakes and other springs decreases. In addition, groundwater is also subject to pressures that can affect the quantity. In terms of quality, some parameters have increased such as the BOD, COD, nitrate and coli. “Excessive use of water also causes seawater intrusion. Environmentally, I have objection. There has been brackish water in some places due to the entry of seawater into mainland. It also needs the commitment of all parties,” he added. According to Suarjana, the pressure on water cannot be separated from the population growth that continues to increase reaching about 300,000 people per year. Based on the data of the WHO, everyone needs 150 liters of water per day for drinking, toilet and others. It is supported by excessive consumption pattern, less friendly lifestyle and increasingly smaller land cover rates. “We have to control water consumption, recycle water and make at least ten bio-pores in one house belonging to 80 square meters type,” he added. Suarjana also asked the industry, especially tourism, to do the same considering that most of the tourism industry utilizes underground water. Then, the bottled drinking water companies that also suck up the underground water are expected to contribute to the upstream area through their CSR program. “Formerly, the regulation on the underground water lies in the district government. With the presence of Law No.23/2014, the underground water is under authority of the province. The regulation of underground water has legal instrument in the province and district, including levies with a progressive system. The energy and mineral resources (ESDM) agency had once mapped the prone areas of underground water, including where there are substantial underground water reserves,” he said. Secretary of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said that Bali should start to utilize surface water and limit the use of underground water considering that surface water in Petanu and Unda River is still much wasted because of not being maximally exploited. In addition, there should be a clear regional bylaw stipulating that people are not allowed to use underground water more that certain capacity. More importantly, Bali must make a blue print so that development should not be over capacity with limited natural resources. “We have to start how to save water resources especially in the upstream area such as in lakes and rivers. Then, a technology should be made so that surface water like in the river will no longer be wasted,” he said. Kariyasa added that water should be used wisely. Therefore, the government needs to pay more attentions to rescue the upstream areas chiefly the lakes supplying the clean water. This PDI-P politician exemplified that there are water lettuces in Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan, silting and transfer of vegetation function. “Hard plants like coffee have now been replaced with crops such as cabbage, green mustard that causes sedimentation and landslides. There should be a protection. To avoid land conversion, the government should provide with subsidies. At the same time, there should be a dredging program and maintenance of the lake,” he said. two new bee hives each with a queen and some 10,000 busy bees making sustainable ‘Four Seasons Wild Sayan Honey’. Of the species apis cerana indigenous to Indonesia, the bees live in a secluded location only accessible by staff, surrounded by virgin jungle on a bank of the Ayung River amidst coconut palms and wild flowers. Their ‘villa’ hives have thatch-roofs and roof-top entries, mimicking the award-winning below-ground design of the resort’s pool villas. The hives are part of Indonesia’s first bee conservation and community enterprise program, Plan Bee Indonesia, a grassroots initiative launched in Bali to combat colony collapse disorder, the well-documented global threat to bees. Plan Bee has set up bee centres in remote West and North Bali, bringing together farmers and forest honey gatherers to join the fight. Through the co-operative, Plan Bee connects the farmers with new customers for their sustainably-harvested honey, engages in knowledge and skills sharing to minimize use of pesticides in farming, and installs new hives to increase the bee population. It offers the opportunity for businesses and individuals to sponsor hives and support the farmers, and has been endorsed by the Indonesian Beekeepers’ Association. two hives is supplemented with honey from the Plan Bee farmers’ co-operative for use throughout the resort in food and cocktail recipes as a sweetener, at breakfast, cooking classes, and Sacred River Spa. “The beauty of our Wild Sayan Honey is that you will never get two batches the same due to the variety of plants and flowers the bees pollinate,” said Liam. “In general, the honey has a beautiful light scent resembling young coconut and palm as the two main sources of nectar, with a subtle floral fragrance of frangipani. LOS ANGELES - Amal Clooney on Tuesday gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, the first children for the international human rights lawyer and her movie star spouse. “This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine,” George Clooney’s publicist Stan Rosenfield said in an email. He added cheekily, “George is sedated and should recover in a few days.” Amal Clooney, 39, and the 56year-old Oscar-winning star of films like “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Three Kings” married in Italy in 2014, making them one of the world’s biggest celebrity couples. Attackers bomb Iran parliament and mausoleum at least 12 dead - Iranian media
LONDON - Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked Iran’s parliament and the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran on Wednesday morning, killing at least 12 people in a twin assault at the heart of the Islamic Republic, Iranian officials and media said. Islamic State claimed responsibility and released a video purporting to show gunmen inside the parliament building and one man, who appeared wounded, on the floor. The rare attacks were the first claimed by the hardline Sunni Muslim militant group inside the Shi’ite Muslim country. Iran is one of the powers leading the fight against Islamic State militants in neighbouring Iraq and, beyond that, Syria. Attackers dressed as women burst through parliament’s main entrance in central Tehran, deputy interior minister Mohammad Hossein Zolfaghari said, according to the semiofficial Tasnim news agency. “One of them was shot dead and another one detonated his suicide vest,” he said. About five hours after
the first reports, Iranian news agencies said four people who had attacked parliament were dead and the incident was over. At least 12 people were killed by the attackers, the head of Iran’s emergency department, Pir-Hossein Kolivand, was quoted as saying by state broadcaster IRIB. “I was inside the parliament when shooting happened. Everyone was shocked and scared. I saw two men shooting randomly,” said one journalist at the scene, who asked not to be named. Soon after the assault on parliament, another bomber detonated a
suicide vest near the shrine of the Republic’s revered founder, Ayatollah Khomeini, a few kilometres south of the city, Zolfaghari said, according to Tasnim. A second attacker was shot dead, he said. THIRD ATTACK FOILED - MINISTRY The Intelligence Ministry said security forces had arrested another “terrorist team” planning a third attack, without giving further details. The attacks took place less than a month after the re-election of President Hassan Rouhani, a
moderate, whose landslide victory defeated candidates supported by the hardline clergy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is responsible for national security. “The atmosphere is tense. It is a blow to Rouhani. How can four armed men enter the parliament, where a very tight security has always been in place,” said a senior official, who asked not to be named. The Intelligence Ministry called on people to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement. Despite unconfirmed reports of a hostage situation, state television said parliament had resumed, and broadcast footage of what it said was the opening session proceeding normally. “Some coward terrorists infiltrated one of the buildings of parliament.
They were confronted. It was not a major issue. Our security forces have taken necessary steps,” parliament speaker Ali Larijani said in an open session broadcast live by state TV. Attacks are highly rare in Tehran and other major cities though a Sunni militant group named Jundallah and its splinter group Ansar al Furqan have been waging a deadly insurgency, mostly in more remote areas, for almost a decade.
