CANNES - British acting legend Dame Diana Rigg said Friday that women must be “finally paid their due” after decades of screen sexism and lower pay.

The 80-year-old, who played the hard-nosed Lady Olenna Tyrell in “Game of Thrones”, revealed that she protested when she found out that she was earning less than the cameraman on “The Avengers”, the cult 1960s British television series that made her famous.

“I had nothing against the cameraman but I complained and made a fuss of it,” she told AFP at the Canneseries TV festival in the French Riviera resort, where she is receiving an icon award.

“I was called all sorts of things, and nobody supported me,” she added, in what she called her first big battle with “male authority”.

Her co-star Patrick Macnee looked the other way, she said.

“Patrick was a dear and sweet but wanted a quiet life. And I was trouble,” Rigg said.

In keeping with Emma Peel, the fearless spy she played in the series, the actress did not take it lying down.

“I made a bit of a song and dance and demanded more... but there was no sisterhood” to help.

Mick Jagger says ‘on the mend’ after medical procedure

NEW YORK - Legendary Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger said Friday he is “on the mend” after reportedly undergoing heart valve replacement surgery in New York -- news that gave his legions of fans a fright.

Less than a week ago, the band announced they would postpone the North American leg of their upcoming tour so the 75-year-old Jagger could receive medical treatment.

Industry tracker Billboard said late Thursday that doctors successfully performed a minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve

replacement, allowing the artist to avoid major surgery that would open his chest.

“Thank you everyone for all your messages of support, I’m feeling much better now and on the mend - and also a huge thank you to all the hospital staff for doing a superb job,” Jagger tweeted.

The British rocker was resting in the hospital, according to Billboard, citing anonymous sources who said he must lay low for four to five days so he can heal.

Explore economic potential by improving forex trading

DENPASAR - Bali’s economy with its major income acquired from tourism sector should be able to grow even higher. Particularly, it can do if the payment transaction or foreign currency exchange is well managed. There are no illegal money changers in Bali disrupting the image of Bali tourism. This has been happening for years but there are no significant solution.

An economist from Udayana University, Prof. Wayan Ramantha, stated that one of the completeness of tourism is currency.

“We rely heavily on our tourism from foreign tourists, from various countries. Thus, they have a variety of currencies. After arriv-

ing here, they certainly look for rupiah, our currency. They need a money changer to exchange theirs into rupiah, certainly the legal ones,” he said in the public discussion at The Vasini Hotel Ballroom, Denpasar, recently.

Even though we are quite

proud of the current tourism conditions, we also need to compare with other countries such as Singapore, Malaysia et cetera.

“Actually, there are still many potentials we need to explore,” he said. One of the ways to explore them is by improving the money

changer, improving our foreign currency market, and eliminating illegal money changers.

In addition, among legal money changers, there must be provisions, standards as well as coaching so as not to disrupt the image of our institution which ultimately damages the image of tourism. “So, we improve this in order to actually improve and increase our economic growth,” he added.

With the presence of illegal money changers, tourists will be reluctant to come to Bali. They need a sense of security and comfort, not only physically safe from being spoofed but also safe in the matter that they are not lied to about rates and so on. When there are other choices in other countries, they will find comfort and safety to the countries. In many countries, especially in developed countries and countries of the origin of Bali tourists, there are no illegal money changers. This is one of Bali’s weaknesses needing to be improved that ultimately is expected to increase tourism in Indonesia and Bali.

Chairperson of the Money Changer Association (APVA) of Bali, Hj. Ayu Astuti Dhama, stated that every money changer entrepreneur must be proactive in reporting anything suspicious to the Financial Transaction Reporting Center (PPATK). Each money changer company must apply the practice of Know Your Costumer (KYC). If there is a suspicious

transaction, immediately report it to the PPATK. “Get to know customers that will be transacting. We anticipate that currently illegal money changers in Jakarta, Bali, Aceh and Kalimantan are doing a lot of business transaction of foreign exchange, but do not have permission,” he said.

In accordance with regulations of Bank Indonesia (BI), licensed money changers are prohibited from transacting with illegal money changers. Although the money changers are scattered throughout Indonesia, there are still many money changer companies having no license or legality.

Ayu revealed, currently there are still many money changers making transactions by using personal account or employees’ account, not using a company’s account. “This must be avoided.

Well, if you find something like that, please immediately report it because this action is a very fatal crime,” he explained.

Division Head of Payment System, Service and Administration of Bali Representative Office of BI, Teguh Setiadi, stated that BI only supervised legal KUPVA (money changers) because the illegal ones are beyond its authority. “We regularly supervise the legal ones by offsite method through their reports. However, on site we are also shifting because so far the number of KUPVA in Bali has 124 headquarters and more than 500 branch offices,” he affirmed. (kmb42)

Hundreds of millennial generation attend creative classes, MANGUPURA - The increasingly intense global competition requires the young generation to be creative and highly competitive. To that end, hundreds of millennial generations consisting of pupils, college students and people with disabilities had the opportunity to take part in the Creative Class held by ITDC at Hotel Haris, Kuta, on Friday (Apr. 5).

The creative class held in a series of the 21st anniversary of the StateOwned Enterprise (BUMN) presented a number of creators and young entrepreneurs from Bali. Among them, there were Dewandra Djelantik

(Photographer), Windu Segara Senet (Founder of Mangsi Coffee & Grill), Ratna Katarina (Owner of Paulina Katarina) and Puja Astawa (Content Creator). They were presented to share experiences and inspiration in an effort to motivate millennial generations.

Director of Construction and Operations of Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) organizing the event, AA Ngurah Wirawan, stated the provision of the creative class is expected to be a good start in making creative efforts for millennial generation

having high value in the future.

“This activity is in the context of the 21st SOE Anniversary, the real work program of SOE presented for the country. Hopefully, this effort can increase the motivation and enthusiasm of young people in order to be able to become the engine of creativity and innovation in various fields,” he said.

The SOE Creative Class, said Wirawan, is an insight and skill debriefing program for the millennial generation. It is meant to prepare themselves to face global competition through life-based learning.

There are 30 SOEs participating in the event by holding similar activities throughout Indonesia with a total target of 6,000 participants. “We at the ITDC are entrusted to hold the Creative Class in the Bali Province,” he added.

This SOE Creative Class Program is also part of the company’s social responsibility program to the surrounding community, especially in terms of providing comprehensive education on the important role of younger generation in commitment and the spirit of the SOE is Present for the Country, chiefly in dealing

with current global competition. He admitted it is also in line with the vision and mission of the Ministry of SOE prioritizing the strategic role of SOEs as a pillar of national development.

Managing Director of the ITDC Nusa Dua, IGN Ardita, added that his management always provides opportunities for young entertainers to be able to perform in Nusa Dua. Two fun reasons to visit the village of Cassel in Flanders, France

THE village of Cassel in France’s Nord department region with its cobbled streets, quiet atmosphere and traditional Flemish buildings feels like a romantic relic of a bygone era.

Though it was originally created by the Romans on top of a prominent hill (Mont Cassel) overlooking the lush rolling pastures of French Flanders, the rulers of Flanders picked up the pieces after the demise of the Roman Empire and the Flemish influence is still evident.

Though many a holiday-maker has driven or worse – bypassed altogether – Cassel on their way to Lille or Paris, we offer two fantastic reasons to stop and stare.

Musée de Flandre Musée de Flandre (Flanders Museum) is located in a stunning 17th century Flemish building on the main street of Cassel, with foundations dating back to the medieval period.

You will find some of the finest Flemish artworks and paintings

in the world here. Currently they are hosting a special exhibition of Fêtes et Kermesses au temps des Brueghel until July 14th (€6 adult entry).

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (also spelt “Brueghel”) is renowned for his Dutch and Flemish Renaissance paintings. Many of them feature imaginative, joyful and sometimes barmy renditions of parties and celebrations. Sadly his own works are not here but you can see them in The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. However, the good news is that works based on his paintings are here in abundance.

Eleven room showcase these and as well as artworks created by his two sons, Jan I and Pieter II. Most of the paintings depict the poorest of society, and they provide an important social commentary on

life in the Renaissance period.

More than 100 paintings and engravings depict fairs, weddings and other community events that took place in 16th and 17th centuries, some with incredibly funny and strange depictions. Almost every painting contains a stupidlydressed “fool”, who is a visual representation of excess and naughtiness. Men projectile vomit after glugging too much mead, couples embrace passionately behind trees and brawlers throw punches with gay abandon.

To top the entertainment off are the amusing holographic jesters that pop-up while stories of peasant parties during the Baroque period unfold.

Amid all this are numerous depictions of brides: sobbing brides, bored brides and drunken brides all

make an appearance. There is also an interesting selection of sartorial hat choices including a beehive, a crown made of vegetables and a hat that looks like a butter churner.

One inebriated bride even wears a colander on her head as her terrified husband looks on with pure terror.

My personal favourite was ”Village festival” by Jan I Bruegel, which forms part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Collection.

The painting contains an incredible level of detail and expression, portraying dozens of “Lilliputian” characters dancing in celebration.

Whether or not you are a Bruegel fan, the exhibition is brilliantly curated and great fun. The exhibition is family friendly and we saw several groups of children who genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves.

The gardens at Mont des Récollets The Jardins du Mont des Récollets (a 5-minute drive from Musée

de Flandre) are part of an old, converted farm and will open to the public on 10 April 2019 (€6 adult entry). As with any typical Flemish farm, you enter the gardens though the orchard, and first impressions are of a small, lovingly tended garden.

However, as you weave through various hedges, nooks and corridors a magnificent garden with more and 20 themed “rooms” appears. These include the “embroidery room” with hedges designed to look like a knitting pattern and the “Berlingots room” with hedges groomed to look like sweets.

The farmhouse is almost as idyllic as the gardens, and overlooks the stunning Flemish countryside.

It has since been converted into a restaurant filled with old pots and pans and hand-made wooden tables and chairs.

This is a perfect spot for a traditional Flemish lunch or a cup of tea before you move on. (net)

Steel wool photography

STEEL WOOL photography is actually one of the applications of light painting photography using steel wool as a medium or object to be photographed. Steel wool is a neatly rolled iron fiber strand commonly used for carpentry or furniture. In light painting (painting with light), we will create by using a slow shutter speed, so that the camera can record light trails making a variety of unique light patterns in accordance with the wishes of photographers. This technique is mainly to illuminate several areas or points on the object so that only the illuminated area is recorded in the photo.

In steel wool photography, we will make a photo shoot with a slow shutter speed technique and apply steel wool burned and rotated in such a way. Sparks of the rotated steel wool will produce very attractive lines of light.

Aside from steel wool, in this

photo shoot we also need matches or batteries to light steel-wool, ropes measuring around 1.5 meters and egg beaters or other objects used to tie steel wool so that it does not come loose when rotated. A sturdy tripod is also very necessary to minimize shocks when the camera

shutter is pressed because we use a slow shutter speed. Apply a wide lens to cover a large enough area.

Ensure security After that, set the camera to manual mode with an aperture of around f/8 - f/16 depending on the shutter speed requirement. Apply

a low ISO (ISO 100-200) with a shutter speed adjusted to exposure.

For example, utilize 10-20 seconds shutter speed at ISO 200 and F/11.

Of course, it is strongly recommended to change the camera settings until the maximum results are obtained. Use tungsten white balance to make the sky bluer and it is highly recommended to take pictures with RAW format for ease of post processing or photo processing Last but not least, make sure safety when shooting. Do not take photos at home, keep away from children, dry grass or other flam-

mable objects such as gasoline, LPG and the like. Adjust the distance of shooting with the object so that it is not exposed to a spark of steel wool. Meanwhile, people who help rotate steel wool need to be protected by using protective clothing or raincoats, hats or helmets.

Keep in mind, the primary key to getting good and attractive steel wool photos is to be creative and never tired of trying and exploring. The more often you try, the quality of the resulting photo will be certainly getting better. Happy painting with lights! (ian)

Kutuh village to develop special elderly tourism

BANGLI - Kutuh village in Kintamani having been established as tourism village since 2015 by the Bangli district plans to develop tourism specifically for the elderly.

To realize this plan, the local village government has now prepared a piece of land that can be developed into a tourism area for the elderly.

To work on the development, the village will make cooperation with investors.

Headman of Kutuh, Wayan Pasek, stated on Friday (Apr. 5) the idea to make the tourism for the elderly was inspired by the tourists visiting Bangli just last for a relatively short time, namely 1 to 2 days. He wanted the tourists will visit and stay longer. Pursuant to the results of a survey, it is known that tourists that can make a visit and settle for a long time are mostly the elderly.

Pasek also added that he is interested in making tourism for the elderly, after having met with a professor. The professor said to have several room facilities in Mengwi area rented specifically for the elderly tourists. Moreover, the elderly tourists staying there have been willing to sign a contract in order to be able to stay longer.

According to Pasek, the natural condition of Kutuh village remaining beautiful and natural is very supportive and appropriate for tourism development targeting the

elderly. With the presence of a special tourism for the elderly at Kutuh village later, it will indirectly bring in more tourists, such as relatives of the elderly tourists. Presence of the elderly special tourist is believed to increase the economy and will open employment opportunities for the local village community. “The elderly tourist will really bring along their money here. They come to buy comfort, tranquility and attention. They do not just buy food and natural beauty,” he said.

To realize the special tourism for the elderly, Pasek said that his authority had prepared the land owned by residents that can be rented and developed, one of which is for the construction of tourist accommodation. The land has been prepared and blocked, and it offers a beautiful natural landscape, namely the view of the sea and mountains from a distance. Considering to need for large amount of funds, the village plans to make cooperation with investors.

In the near future, he is going to meet the regent to ask for the assistance of road making as the access to the special tourist attraction for the elderly. “Two years ago, we prepared the roads through village fund along 2.5 km. The investor came yesterday and asked if the road can be soon improved.

The tradition of mass wedding at Pengotan village was carried out at the Penataran Agung Temple of local village. It becomes one of the traditions remaining to be carried out and preserved by residents of Pengotan village since hundreds of years ago.

Chief of Pengotan customary village, Jero Kopok, said that of the 17 couples participating in the mass wedding tradition, nine couples are native to Pengotan village, while eight other couples are residents from outside Pengotan marrying to women from Pengotan village.

“Even though they have status to have come out of Pengotan village, the bride will still attend this mass wedding ceremony. If they do not take part in the ceremony, they will not be allowed to attend any prayers in the ceremony at held Bale Agung Temple later on,” he explained.

Jero Kopok explained the tradition of mass wedding is held twice a year, namely at sasih kapat (October) and sasih kadasa (April).

This tradition is carried out with the aim to ease the burden of residents.

To follow this tradition, someone wishing to get married first conveys to the customary apparatus of each hamlet. Furthermore, the customary apparatus from all the hamlets at Pengotan customary village will hold a meeting to discuss the implementation plan of the mass wedding. This event is usually carried out if the participant reaches at least ten couples.

The mass wedding tradition is filled with a number of processions started with a wedding meeting. In the meeting, chief of customary village conveyed the identity of the couples to the Pengotan villagers.

Then, it is resumed by slaughtering a cow having been purchased by all the couples together. After slaughtering the cow, it is resumed with peserah procession. In the procession, the couples participating in the mass wedding hand over five kilograms of white rice to customary figures. “This rice is used as kawas, which is then distributed to 206 nuclear villagers,” he explained.

If the couple’s house is on the west side of the road, they are not allowed to go to the house on the east side of the road and vice versa.

“After three days, then from Purusa (groom) to Predana (bride) brought a tipat bantal or cake oblations indicating the end of the mass wedding procession, and then the women follow to stay at their husband’s residence,” explained Jero Kopok. (kmb40)

The staple menu item at Giang Cafe in Hanoi’s pulsating Old Quarter is made with ice cold beer topped with creamy egg yolks whipped with sugar and a touch of butter to boost richness.

Owner Nguyen Chi Hoa said he came up with the recipe in 1999, curious how the combination might turn out.

“I made egg beer just for myself ... I thought it was good, so I decided to give it a try to see if anyone agreed,” he told AFP in his packed terracotta-tiled cafe.

The creamy beer concoction wasn’t such a dramatic departure from his most popular menu item: Vietnamese coffee topped with sweetened egg froth, now enjoyed in cafes across Hanoi among locals and tourists alike.

Hoa claims it was his father who came up with the recipe in 1946 as an affordable alternative to the cappuccinos sipped by French colonial occupiers, who made them with cow’s milk -- a luxury ingredient for most Vietnamese under French rule.

“Poor people could also drink egg coffee because they had lots of chickens, so they

just cracked an egg, added sugar and mixed it together -- then we had egg coffee,” he said in the cafe where black-and-white photos of his family hang on the walls.

Hoa didn’t stop at coffee and beer, and he also offers frothy eggs drinks made with rum, matcha, chocolate and even Coca Cola.

To keep up with demand for his whipped delights his daughter cracks 1,000 eggs every morning to be beaten by machine throughout the day. Though many of Hoa’s customers have never heard of egg beer, he said he has won most over -- especially those from beer-guzzling Germany -- and sells up to 20 mugs a day.

“It’s very special, it tastes like dessert, plus the beer,” said Malaysian visitor ST Lim. In a city better known for its ubiquitous open-air beer markets called “bia hoi”, Hoa said his unique beer beverage is still met with scepticism by some.

But he’s hoping to sway them -- even beauty-conscious drinkers: “This is very good for your skin, bright skin,” Hoa said with a smile. (afp)

SINGAPORE - Tech giants have reacted with horror after Singapore proposed laws against “fake news” allowing authorities to order the removal of content and impose hefty fines, in what critics say is an assault on free speech.

The government unveiled a bill last week containing tough measures, including powers for ministers to order social media sites like Facebook to put warnings next to posts authorities believe to be false and in extreme cases take them down.

If an action is deemed mali-

cious and damaging to Singapore’s interests, companies could be hit with fines of up to Sg$1 million ($740,000). Individuals could face jail terms of up to 10 years.

Authorities in the tightly-controlled country -- long criticised for restricting civil liberties -- insist the measures are necessary to stop the circulation of falsehoods which could sow divisions in the multiethnic city-state.

“As the most far-reaching legislation of its kind to date, this level of overreach poses significant risks to freedom of expression and speech,” said the Asia Internet Coalition, an industry association whose members include Facebook, Google and Twitter.

Simon Milner, Facebook’s vice president of public policy in AsiaPacific, said the social media giant was concerned about potentially being compelled to remove content.

“Giving people a place to express themselves freely and safely is important to us and we have a responsibility to handle any government request to remove alleged misinformation carefully and thoughtfully,” he said in a statement.

The internet is a relatively free space in Singapore and there are some local alternative news sites, which are typically more critical of the authorities than the traditional, progovernment newspapers and TV. Singapore is among several countries pushing legislation to fight fake news, and the government stressed ordering “corrections” to be placed alongside falsehoods would be the primary response, rather than jail or fines.

A government decision can also be appealed to the courts.

But there were already signs of tensions with tech companies as the government prepared to unveil the laws. During parliamentary hearings last year about tackling online falsehoods, Google and Facebook urged the government not to introduce new laws.

In November, Facebook refused a request to remove an article linking Singapore to a financial scandal in Malaysia which the government said was untrue -- prompting the law ministry to say the firm “cannot be relied upon to filter falsehoods”.

Critics say one of the most worrying aspects of the new legislation is that it is up to authorities to decide what is false and what is not.

While authorities insist decisions can be appealed, Kirsten Han, the Singapore-based editor of regional

news site New Naratif, said most people do not have the resources or will to fight the government.

“Even if you are convinced that your Facebook post is in the right, how many average Singaporeans would appeal to the minister, and then spend thousands of dollars to hire a lawyer and file an application in the court?” she told AFP. Human Rights Watch has described the bill as “sweepingly broad” while critics note Singapore already has tough laws against sedition, defamation and disturbing racial harmony, that can be used to police the web.

But it is not yet clear how the legislation -- which is likely to pass easily through the ruling party-dominated parliament -will be used in practice, and some believe authorities will wield it cautiously.

“I think that the government will be very careful in their implementation of the law,” said Professor Ang Peng Hwa, from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information in Singapore.

“I think, in general, there’s a very high level of trust in the government and its institutions by foreign entities, and so I don’t see them... being too trigger-happy about the implementation of this bill.” (afp)

BUSINESS German economy forecast to slow sharply

BERLIN - A group of leading German economic research institutes slashed their growth forecast for the country on Thursday, warning that if Britain leaves the European Union without a deal, it could get even worse.

In a joint statement, the five institutes said they were reducing their autumn forecast of 1.9% growth for Europe’s largest economy downward to 0.8% after concluding “political risks have further clouded the global economic environment.”

The new assessment is in line with that issued last month by the German government’s panel of independent economic advisers, and lower than the government’s own 1% prediction.

The institutes, DIW, ifo, IfW, IWH and RWI, said they reached their conclusion March 29, “when it still seemed that a hard Brexit would be avoided.”

“This has now become less likely, but is still possible,” they said. “However, if a no-deal Brexit occurs, economic growth this year and the next is likely to be significantly lower than indicated in this forecast.”

More than the political risks, the report concluded the economic slump in the second half of 2018 was “primarily due to obstacles to production in industry.”

“The long-term upswing of the German economy has come to an end,” says Oliver Holtemoeller, vice president of the IWH institute.

Data released by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday underlined those concerns, showing industrial orders dropped 4.2% in February, following a revised 2.1% drop in January from December, according to seasonally and calendar adjusted figures.

Domestic orders dropped 1.6% in February, while foreign orders fell 6%. Of the foreign orders, those from inside the eurozone dropped 2.9% and those outside dropped 7.9%.

Ngrebeg Has Three Meanings, What Are They?

Ngerebeg tradition or better known as makotek held every Tumpek Kuningan (ten days after Galungan) at Munggu customary village, Mengwi, Badung, has the meaning as a tribute to the heroes, repellent of negative things and a means to unite the citizens. This was confirmed by chief of Munggu customary village, I Made Rai Sujana, amid the ngerebeg procession at the local Desa and Puseh Temple of local village, Saturday (Jan. 5).

He explained the meanings of the procession starting from the Mengwi kingdom headquartered at Munggu with the king named Ida Cokorda Nyoman Sakti Munggu.

When defending his territory in Blambangan, East Java, before the Mengwi troops named goak selem or black crow troops left the kingdom, right on the Tumpek Kuningan Day, the king of Mengwi performed a meditation at Dalem Kahyangan Wisesa Temple, Munggu. The king got a revelation from his meditation.

The return of his troops with victory or success in the war was then commemorated with the tradition of ngerebeg. “Therefore, on Tumpek Kuningan, the tradition of ngerebeg continues to be commemorated at Munggu customary village as a tribute to the victory of Mengwi’s royal war, as the respect for the heroes,” he explained.

Related to the tradition as disaster repellent, he told that it was initially carried out with a spear. Then, during the Dutch colonial period the tradition was banned because it was thought to be a rebellion. As a result, this tradition had not been organized for several times. Then, outbreaks of disease or plague attacked villagers, even many people died.

This condition made some customary and religious leaders negotiate with the Dutch

administration and finally the tradition was allowed to be held again. However, the facilities used are not spears, but replaced with pulet wooden stick. “Since then, the tradition of ngerebeg formerly used spears was replaced with a pulet wooden stick, with the length of 3.5 meters. Based on such belief, the ngerebeg tradition serves as catastrophe repellent or keeps away from negative

things,” he explained.

The third meaning of the tradition is as a means to unite citizens. This tradition is followed by almost all men aged 14 years and over from 12 hamlets at Munggu customary village. They mutually mingle while carrying wooden sticks and walking around the village area. When they arrive in several places such as road intersection they gather and unite the

end of the stick to form the pyramid.

Once in a while, a young man will climb up the pile of the sticks. “So, this tradition is to unite young people from 12 hamlets across the Munggu customary village. By carrying out the ngerebeg tradition, they will definitely do positive things and strengthen the sense of unity among the youth,” he concluded. (kmb)

Bolsonaro struggles in first 100 days as Brazil leader

RIO DE JANEIRO - Since taking power on a pledge to trash corrupt “old politics,” Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s first months have been marred by chaos and blunders that have eroded support for the far-right leader and put the brakes on his reforms.

The brash ex-army captain -- nicknamed the “Trump of the tropics” for his admiration of the US president -- is struggling to make good on his key election promises to kickstart Latin America’s biggest economy and stamp out corruption.

“It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that the president’s performance to date has been disappointing,” s a i d Thomaz Favaro of the political risk consultancy Control Risks.

“There was a misperception that he was coming in with a very strong support

base and I think we’re now beginning to see that maybe that support wasn’t strong.”

Condemned by opponents as racist, sexist and homophobic before the ballot, Bolsonaro’s message of toughness and an end to business-as-usual politics resonated with voters fed up with violence and industrial-scale graft.

But Bolsonaro, who was better known for making insults rather than policy during his decades as a congressman, is finding that his uncompromising style and penchant for Twitter are not working in Congress where he lacks a rulingparty majority to push through legislation.

His signature policy to overhaul Brazil’s unsustainable pension system, which he has warned would bankrupt the country if changes are not adopted, has stalled following a spat with key political allies and raised doubts about his ability to do the job.

“Over the last few weeks we’ve really seen the side people

feared about Bolsonaro,” said William Jackson, an economist at London-based Capital Economics.

“His lack of governing experience, showing up in deteriorating relations with Congress, and his struggles to keep his coalition together seem to have led to a paralysis in policymaking.”

Bolsonaro appears to have adopted a more conciliatory tone in recent days, holding meetings with the leaders of several parties.

He may have finally accepted the “give and take” of Brazilian politics, said David Fleischer, a political science professor at the University of Brasilia.

“It’s a make or break,” Fleischer warned. If the pension reform bill fails then Bolsonaro “doesn’t get any tax reform, which is another important thing on the table, and his government will just drift along until 2022.”

- Walking a tightrope Bolsonaro has scored some wins since his January 1 inauguration, including the relaxation of gun ownership laws and the sale of concessions to 12 airports, which was seen as test of foreign-investor confidence in his ability to privatize

state-owned companies.

But more contentious policies are going to be tough to push through the lower house of Congress where Bolsonaro’s ultraconservative Social Liberal Party only holds around 10 percent of the 513 seats.

That means he is relying on ad-hoc alliances with lawmakers in various parties who are part of his evangelical, pro-agribusiness, pro-gun base.

Further complicating Bolsonaro’s task is the chaos within his own government, where competing factions, including the military, right-wing ideologues and his own sons -- are jostling for influence over policy.

“It’s a tightrope he will be constantly trying to tread,” said Favaro.

“Bolsonaro’s strategy depends on his political capital to create a viable coalition in Congress and that’s tricky because we’re now seeing the president’s approval rating decline.”

Bolsonaro’s approval rating plunged to 51 percent in March from 67 percent in January -- the worst reading recorded by a firstterm president in the three months after taking power. (afp)

Dutchman ends ‘world’s longest electric car trip’ in Australia

SYDNEY - A Dutchman completed an epic 95,000 kilometre (59,000 mile) journey by electric car in Sydney Sunday in a bid to prove the viability of such vehicles in tackling climate change.

Wiebe Wakker drove his retrofitted station wagon nicknamed “The Blue Bandit” across 33 countries in what he said was the world’s longest-ever journey by electric car.

The trip from the Netherlands to Australia took just over three years and was funded by public donations from around the world, including electricity to charge the Bandit, food and a place to sleep.

Wakker drove across a variety of countries and environments including Turkey, Iran, India, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia, with the route determined by the offers he received on his website.

“I wanted to change people’s opinions and inspire people to start driving electric by showing the advantages of sustainable mobility,” Wakker said.

“If one man can drive to the other side of the world in an electric car, then EVs (electric vehicles) should definitely be viable for daily use.”

Wakker said before the car was modified, it would have used 6,785 litres (1,800 US gallons) of petrol to complete the journey.

The modified vehicle can travel 200 kilometres on a single charge, with Wakker saying he spent just US$300 on electricity, much of it in the remote desert Outback of Australia. (afp)

JAKARTA - Opinion surveys two weeks ahead of presidential and legislative elections in the world’s third-largest democracy show Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his ruling coalition maintaining a large lead over the rival camp.

Four nationwide surveys conducted in the second half of March show Widodo between 13 and 20 percentage points ahead of former special forces general Prabowo Subianto, though undecided voters are as high as 20%.

The race has tightened modestly since late last year, but pollsters say Widodo, who has had a commanding lead for months, especially in populous East and Central Java, is headed for victory in the April 17 election.

Widodo, the first Indonesian president from outside the Jakarta elite, has campaigned on progress in upgrading inadequate infra-

structure and reducing poverty. He narrowly defeated Subianto in the 2014 president election.

Far behind in the polls, Subianto and his team have recently resorted to questioning the integrity of the upcoming vote, apparently setting the groundwork for a repeat of his unsuccessful challenge to the 2014 results.

Subianto’s ultra-nationalistic campaign has focused on what he sees as Indonesia’s weakness in the world relative to its vast land area rich in natural resources and population of more than 260 million.

He has highlighted significant problems facing the country includ-

ing poverty and particularly the tragedy of stunting — malnutrition in children younger than 5 that causes lifelong physical and mental impairment.

But the government has been able to show progress in alleviating those long-standing crises.

The U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization and other international agencies said earlier this week that the percentage of Indonesian children suffering from stunting fell to 30.8% from nearly 38% between 2013 and 2018.

During the same period, the reduction in the number of hungry and malnourished people,

including children, has come to a standstill in many other parts of Asia, according to the agencies that included UNICEF, the World Health Organization and World Food Program.

Meanwhile, the Pew Research Center, in research released Thursday, said Indonesians are increasingly optimistic about their country’s current and future economic situation.

As of last summer, two thirds of Indonesians said the economy was doing well compared with almost the same number saying it was doing poorly before Widodo was elected in 2014.

The March opinion surveys showed the coalition of parties that has coalesced around Widodo since his election would gain about 60%

of the vote compared with 37% for the parties allied with Subianto.

Religion has not figured in the election campaign as prominently as expected in the predominantly Muslim nation. Widodo at least partially neutralized criticism he is insufficiently Muslim by naming a conservative cleric, Ma’ruf Amin, as his running mate.

Personality differences also appear to have worked in Widodo’s favor.

Subianto, an elite figure linked to human rights abuses during the Suharto dictatorship, is a powerful speaker but has often appeared volatile and emotional during the campaign. Widodo has cultivated a friendly common man persona that has roots in his lower middle-class background.(ap)

JAKARTA - The rupiah continued its rally against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank market over the weekend, strengthening 50 points to close at Rp14,133 against the previous Rp14,183 per dollar.

The lingering US-China trade dispute which is expected to

end soon has offered a positive catalyst for the rupiah, PT Garuda Berjangka President Director Ibrahim Assuaibi said here on Friday.

“The trade war between the world’s largest economies has posed a hindrance to the money market in the past year, with risky

assets being hit amidst worries over business expansion and the impact of the conflict,” he said.

US President Donald Trump said earlier that the two countries have come close to a trade agreement, which can be announced in four weeks.

The declining global crude

prices also helped sentiments toward the rupiah. If the crude prices tumbled, pressure on the current account would decline accordingly.

“The current account is an essential foundation for the rupiah because it reflects the flow of foreign exchange earnings from

the export and import of goods and services. When it (the current account) improves, the rupiah still has room to strengthen,” he said.

The rupiah traded at Rp14,180 per dollar on Friday morning.

LOS ANGELES - Joe Harris sank the go-ahead threepointer with 84 seconds left as the Brooklyn Nets’ playoff push got a boost with a 133-128 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday.

The Nets used a balanced attack to beat the shorthanded Bucks as eight players scored in double figures. They also drained 19 threepointers.

Brooklyn improved to 40-40 on the NBA season to move into a tie with the Orlando Magic for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Detroit is a half game behind at 39-40. But the Nets have tiebreakers against both the Magic and the Pistons.

D’Angelo Russell had 25 points and 10 assists, Caris LeVert scored 24 points and Jared Dudley collected 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

Milwaukee played without star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was out with a left calf injury.

BERLIN - Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, said his test with Ferrari this week was an important stepping stone in his fledgling racing career.

“It was very emotional, not just for me, but for all those who were there,” the 20-year-old Schumacher told AFP subsidiary SID on Friday.

“There are doors which open.

It gives me opportunities to work with the Ferrari F1 engineers at Ma-

ranello. I can learn very important things there for my future, and that I can already use in F2.”

On Tuesday European Formula 3 champion Schumacher, who is taking part in the Formula 2 championship this season, drove 56 laps for Ferrari at Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit.

“I’ve been very direct and very open in my feedback that I gave, to show where I still saw potential for improvement,” said Schumacher, whose father won five world titles with Ferrari.

“Even if it’s difficult, as you still don’t properly know the car and you don’t yet know where your limits are. The speed in the turn is really fascinating, the car moves as if on rails.”

Following two seasons in F4 and then F3, Schumacher said he didn’t have any particular timetable for a move into the top category.

“I raced my first weekend in F2, now I’m going to see how it goes.

Barca a ‘little closer’ to La Liga title after beating 10-man Atletico

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi scored twice in two minutes as Barcelona broke the resistance of 10-man Atletico Madrid on Saturday to go 11 points clear of their La Liga title rivals.

European soccer players back Italian following racial abuse MILAN - A black player for Italy’s most popular soccer club won support from other European players Wednesday, a day after he was subjected to a torrent of racist abuse from an opposing team’s fans.

Juventus forward Moise Kean scored his team’s second goal against Cagliari late in the 2-0 victory Tuesday and stood in front of the home fans with his arms outstretched. That seemed to trigger a furious and openly racist outcry from the fans.

One of his teammates, Leonardo Bonucci, added fuel to the fire by saying Kean was partly to blame for the angry response.

That prompted players on other teams to rush to Kean’s defense.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, who is black, ridiculed the remark: “Leonardo Bonucci ... All you can do now is laugh.” He also posted a screenshot on Twitter.

“I support every fight against racism, we’re all equal,” Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba wrote in an Instagram post of Kean celebrating his goal. The Frenchman, who used to play for Juventus, then added, in Italian: “Good Italians wake up, you can’t let a small group of racists talk for you.”

Kean, a 19-year-old Italian whose parents are from Ivory Coast, was insulted by home fans during much of Tuesday’s game in Cagliari. He received a yellow card for faking an injury in the first half.

His goal and ensuing celebration seemed to push the home fans over the edge.

Cagliari captain Luca Ceppitelli tried to protect Kean, rushing to his side and pleading with the fans to stop. Instead, Ceppitelli was almost hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the stands.

In his comments partially blaming Kean, Bonucci said: “There were racist boos after Kean’s celebration and (Blaise) Matuidi got angry but I think the blame is 50-50.”

He added: “Kean made a mistake and the fans made a mistake.” Matuidi, who is also black and won the World Cup with France last year, was subjected to racist abuse in Cagliari last year.

The incident involving Kean is but the latest example of racism in soccer this season. Last week, several England players were targeted with monkey chants during the team’s 5-1 victory in Montenegro.

Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, a four-time African player of the year from Ivory Coast, said players who are being targeted should walk off the field.

“Yeah, let’s do this,” Toure said at a UEFA conference on

diversity in soccer. “When something like that happens we have to send a strong message.”

As criticism mounted Wednesday, Bonucci backtracked on his comments in an Instagram post.

“After 24 hours I want to clarify my feelings,” he wrote.

“I was interviewed right at the end of the game, and my words have been clearly misunderstood, probably because I was too hasty in the way I expressed my thoughts. Hours and years wouldn’t be enough to talk about this topic. I firmly condemn all forms of racism and discrimination. The abuses are not acceptable at all and this must not be misunderstood.”

Another teammate from both Juventus and Italy’s national team, Giorgio Chiellini, defended Kean in a story posted on the club’s website, calling him “a positive figure of Italian football.”

“The only thing he did wrong today was the simulation (faking injury), that he surely won’t repeat, but he’s here to learn,” Chiellini said. “He’s a very positive figure and he certainly didn’t deserve the insults he received.”

Kean, who scored in both of Italy’s qualifying matches for the 2020 European Championship, also won backing from Mario Balotelli — another black Italian born to African parents and who played for the country’s national team.

“And tell Bonucci that his luck is that I wasn’t there,” Balotelli wrote on Instagram. “Instead of defending you he does this?

BERLIN - Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, said his test with Ferrari this week was an important stepping stone in his fledgling racing career.

“It was very emotional, not just for me, but for all those who were there,” the 20-year-old Schumacher told AFP subsidiary SID on Friday.

“There are doors which open.

It gives me opportunities to work with the Ferrari F1 engineers at Ma-

ranello. I can learn very important things there for my future, and that I can already use in F2.”

On Tuesday European Formula 3 champion Schumacher, who is taking part in the Formula 2 championship this season, drove 56 laps for Ferrari at Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit.

“I’ve been very direct and very open in my feedback that I gave, to show where I still saw potential for improvement,” said Schumacher, whose father won five world titles with Ferrari.

“Even if it’s difficult, as you still don’t properly know the car and you don’t yet know where your limits are. The speed in the turn is really fascinating, the car moves as if on rails.”

Following two seasons in F4 and then F3, Schumacher said he didn’t have any particular timetable for a move into the top category.

“I raced my first weekend in F2, now I’m going to see how it goes.

Bolsonaro struggles in first 100 days as Brazil leader

RIO DE JANEIRO - Since taking power on a pledge to trash corrupt “old politics,” Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s first months have been marred by chaos and blunders that have eroded support for the far-right leader and put the brakes on his reforms.

The brash ex-army captain -- nicknamed the “Trump of the tropics” for his admiration of the US president -- is struggling to make good on his key election promises to kickstart Latin America’s biggest economy and stamp out corruption.

base and I think we’re now beginning to see that maybe that support wasn’t strong.”

Condemned by opponents as racist, sexist and homophobic before the ballot, Bolsonaro’s message of toughness and an end to business-as-usual politics resonated with voters fed up with violence and industrial-scale graft.

But Bolsonaro, who was better known for making insults rather than policy during his decades as a congressman, is finding that his uncompromising style and penchant for Twitter are not working in Congress where he lacks a rulingparty majority to push through legislation.

His signature policy to overhaul Brazil’s unsustainable pension system, which he has warned would bankrupt the country if changes are not adopted, has stalled following a spat with key political allies and raised doubts about his ability to do the job.

“Over the last few weeks we’ve really seen the side people

feared about Bolsonaro,” said William Jackson, an economist at London-based Capital Economics.

“His lack of governing experience, showing up in deteriorating relations with Congress, and his struggles to keep his coalition together seem to have led to a paralysis in policymaking.”

Bolsonaro appears to have adopted a more conciliatory tone in recent days, holding meetings with the leaders of several parties.

He may have finally accepted the “give and take” of Brazilian politics, said David Fleischer, a political science professor at the University of Brasilia.

“It’s a make or break,” Fleischer warned. If the pension reform bill fails then Bolsonaro “doesn’t get any tax reform, which is another important thing on the table, and his government will just drift along until 2022.”

- Walking a tightrope Bolsonaro has scored some wins since his January 1 inauguration, including the relaxation of gun ownership laws and the sale of concessions to 12 airports, which was seen as test of foreign-investor confidence in his ability to privatize

state-owned companies.

But more contentious policies are going to be tough to push through the lower house of Congress where Bolsonaro’s ultraconservative Social Liberal Party only holds around 10 percent of the 513 seats.

That means he is relying on ad-hoc alliances with lawmakers in various parties who are part of his evangelical, pro-agribusiness, pro-gun base.

Further complicating Bolsonaro’s task is the chaos within his own government, where competing factions, including the military, right-wing ideologues and his own sons -- are jostling for influence over policy.

“It’s a tightrope he will be constantly trying to tread,” said Favaro.

“Bolsonaro’s strategy depends on his political capital to create a viable coalition in Congress and that’s tricky because we’re now seeing the president’s approval rating decline.”

Dutchman ends ‘world’s longest electric car trip’ in Australia

SYDNEY - A Dutchman completed an epic 95,000 kilometre (59,000 mile) journey by electric car in Sydney Sunday in a bid to prove the viability of such vehicles in tackling climate change.

Wiebe Wakker drove his retrofitted station wagon nicknamed “The Blue Bandit” across 33 countries in what he said was the world’s longest-ever journey by electric car.

The trip from the Netherlands to Australia took just over three years and was funded by public donations from around the world, including electricity to charge the Bandit, food and a place to sleep.

Wakker drove across a variety of countries and environments including Turkey, Iran, India, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia, with the route determined by the offers he received on his website.

“I wanted to change people’s opinions and inspire people to start driving electric by showing the advantages of sustainable mobility,” Wakker said.

“If one man can drive to the other side of the world in an electric car, then EVs (electric vehicles) should definitely be viable for daily use.”

Wakker said before the car was modified, it would have used 6,785 litres (1,800 US gallons) of petrol to complete the journey.

The modified vehicle can travel 200 kilometres on a single charge, with Wakker saying he spent just US$300 on electricity, much of it in the remote desert Outback of Australia. (afp)

JAKARTA - Opinion surveys two weeks ahead of presidential and legislative elections in the world’s third-largest democracy show Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his ruling coalition maintaining a large lead over the rival camp.

Four nationwide surveys conducted in the second half of March show Widodo between 13 and 20 percentage points ahead of former special forces general Prabowo Subianto, though undecided voters are as high as 20%.

The race has tightened modestly since late last year, but pollsters say Widodo, who has had a commanding lead for months, especially in populous East and Central Java, is headed for victory in the April 17 election.

Widodo, the first Indonesian president from outside the Jakarta elite, has campaigned on progress in upgrading inadequate infra-

structure and reducing poverty. He narrowly defeated Subianto in the 2014 president election.

Far behind in the polls, Subianto and his team have recently resorted to questioning the integrity of the upcoming vote, apparently setting the groundwork for a repeat of his unsuccessful challenge to the 2014 results.

Subianto’s ultra-nationalistic campaign has focused on what he sees as Indonesia’s weakness in the world relative to its vast land area rich in natural resources and population of more than 260 million.

He has highlighted significant problems facing the country includ-

ing poverty and particularly the tragedy of stunting — malnutrition in children younger than 5 that causes lifelong physical and mental impairment.

But the government has been able to show progress in alleviating those long-standing crises.

The U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization and other international agencies said earlier this week that the percentage of Indonesian children suffering from stunting fell to 30.8% from nearly 38% between 2013 and 2018.

During the same period, the reduction in the number of hungry and malnourished people,

including children, has come to a standstill in many other parts of Asia, according to the agencies that included UNICEF, the World Health Organization and World Food Program.

Meanwhile, the Pew Research Center, in research released Thursday, said Indonesians are increasingly optimistic about their country’s current and future economic situation.

As of last summer, two thirds of Indonesians said the economy was doing well compared with almost the same number saying it was doing poorly before Widodo was elected in 2014.

The March opinion surveys showed the coalition of parties that has coalesced around Widodo since his election would gain about 60%

of the vote compared with 37% for the parties allied with Subianto.

Religion has not figured in the election campaign as prominently as expected in the predominantly Muslim nation. Widodo at least partially neutralized criticism he is insufficiently Muslim by naming a conservative cleric, Ma’ruf Amin, as his running mate.

Personality differences also appear to have worked in Widodo’s favor.

Subianto, an elite figure linked to human rights abuses during the Suharto dictatorship, is a powerful speaker but has often appeared volatile and emotional during the campaign. Widodo has cultivated a friendly common man persona that has roots in his lower middle-class background.(ap)

Rupiah continues its rally against dollar over weekend

JAKARTA - The rupiah continued its rally against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank market over the weekend, strengthening 50 points to close at Rp14,133 against the previous Rp14,183 per dollar.

The lingering US-China trade dispute which is expected to

end soon has offered a positive catalyst for the rupiah, PT Garuda Berjangka President Director Ibrahim Assuaibi said here on Friday.

“The trade war between the world’s largest economies has posed a hindrance to the money market in the past year, with risky

assets being hit amidst worries over business expansion and the impact of the conflict,” he said.

US President Donald Trump said earlier that the two countries have come close to a trade agreement, which can be announced in four weeks.

The declining global crude

prices also helped sentiments toward the rupiah. If the crude prices tumbled, pressure on the current account would decline accordingly.

“The current account is an essential foundation for the rupiah because it reflects the flow of foreign exchange earnings from

the export and import of goods and services. When it (the current account) improves, the rupiah still has room to strengthen,” he said.

The rupiah traded at Rp14,180 per dollar on Friday morning.

Throughout the day, the rupiah was in the range of Rp14,130 to Rp14,180 per dollar.(ant)

BUSINESS German economy forecast to slow sharply

BERLIN - A group of leading German economic research institutes slashed their growth forecast for the country on Thursday, warning that if Britain leaves the European Union without a deal, it could get even worse.

In a joint statement, the five institutes said they were reducing their autumn forecast of 1.9% growth for Europe’s largest economy downward to 0.8% after concluding “political risks have further clouded the global economic environment.”

The new assessment is in line with that issued last month by the German government’s panel of independent economic advisers, and lower than the government’s own 1% prediction.

The institutes, DIW, ifo, IfW, IWH and RWI, said they reached their conclusion March 29, “when it still seemed that a hard Brexit would be avoided.”

“This has now become less likely, but is still possible,” they said. “However, if a no-deal Brexit occurs, economic growth this year and the next is likely to be significantly lower than indicated in this forecast.”

More than the political risks, the report concluded the economic slump in the second half of 2018 was “primarily due to obstacles to production in industry.”

“The long-term upswing of the German economy has come to an end,” says Oliver Holtemoeller, vice president of the IWH institute.

Data released by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday underlined those concerns, showing industrial orders dropped 4.2% in February, following a revised 2.1% drop in January from December, according to seasonally and calendar adjusted figures.

Domestic orders dropped 1.6% in February, while foreign orders fell 6%. Of the foreign orders, those from inside the eurozone dropped 2.9% and those outside dropped 7.9%.

Ngrebeg Has Three Meanings, What Are They?

Ngerebeg tradition or better known as makotek held every Tumpek Kuningan (ten days after Galungan) at Munggu customary village, Mengwi, Badung, has the meaning as a tribute to the heroes, repellent of negative things and a means to unite the citizens. This was confirmed by chief of Munggu customary village, I Made Rai Sujana, amid the ngerebeg procession at the local Desa and Puseh Temple of local village, Saturday (Jan. 5).

He explained the meanings of the procession starting from the Mengwi kingdom headquartered at Munggu with the king named Ida Cokorda Nyoman Sakti Munggu.

When defending his territory in Blambangan, East Java, before the Mengwi troops named goak selem or black crow troops left the kingdom, right on the Tumpek Kuningan Day, the king of Mengwi performed a meditation at Dalem Kahyangan Wisesa Temple, Munggu. The king got a revelation from his meditation.

The return of his troops with victory or success in the war was then commemorated with the tradition of ngerebeg. “Therefore, on Tumpek Kuningan, the tradition of ngerebeg continues to be commemorated at Munggu customary village as a tribute to the victory of Mengwi’s royal war, as the respect for the heroes,” he explained.

Related to the tradition as disaster repellent, he told that it was initially carried out with a spear. Then, during the Dutch colonial period the tradition was banned because it was thought to be a rebellion. As a result, this tradition had not been organized for several times. Then, outbreaks of disease or plague attacked villagers, even many people died.

This condition made some customary and religious leaders negotiate with the Dutch

administration and finally the tradition was allowed to be held again. However, the facilities used are not spears, but replaced with pulet wooden stick. “Since then, the tradition of ngerebeg formerly used spears was replaced with a pulet wooden stick, with the length of 3.5 meters. Based on such belief, the ngerebeg tradition serves as catastrophe repellent or keeps away from negative

things,” he explained.

The third meaning of the tradition is as a means to unite citizens. This tradition is followed by almost all men aged 14 years and over from 12 hamlets at Munggu customary village. They mutually mingle while carrying wooden sticks and walking around the village area. When they arrive in several places such as road intersection they gather and unite the

end of the stick to form the pyramid.

Once in a while, a young man will climb up the pile of the sticks. “So, this tradition is to unite young people from 12 hamlets across the Munggu customary village. By carrying out the ngerebeg tradition, they will definitely do positive things and strengthen the sense of unity among the youth,” he concluded. (kmb)

The tradition of mass wedding at Pengotan village was carried out at the Penataran Agung Temple of local village. It becomes one of the traditions remaining to be carried out and preserved by residents of Pengotan village since hundreds of years ago.

Chief of Pengotan customary village, Jero Kopok, said that of the 17 couples participating in the mass wedding tradition, nine couples are native to Pengotan village, while eight other couples are residents from outside Pengotan marrying to women from Pengotan village.

“Even though they have status to have come out of Pengotan village, the bride will still attend this mass wedding ceremony. If they do not take part in the ceremony, they will not be allowed to attend any prayers in the ceremony at held Bale Agung Temple later on,” he explained.

Jero Kopok explained the tradition of mass wedding is held twice a year, namely at sasih kapat (October) and sasih kadasa (April).

This tradition is carried out with the aim to ease the burden of residents.

To follow this tradition, someone wishing to get married first conveys to the customary apparatus of each hamlet. Furthermore, the customary apparatus from all the hamlets at Pengotan customary village will hold a meeting to discuss the implementation plan of the mass wedding. This event is usually carried out if the participant reaches at least ten couples.

The mass wedding tradition is filled with a number of processions started with a wedding meeting. In the meeting, chief of customary village conveyed the identity of the couples to the Pengotan villagers.

Then, it is resumed by slaughtering a cow having been purchased by all the couples together. After slaughtering the cow, it is resumed with peserah procession. In the procession, the couples participating in the mass wedding hand over five kilograms of white rice to customary figures. “This rice is used as kawas, which is then distributed to 206 nuclear villagers,” he explained.

The procession is then continued by summoning the couples to

attend a ceremony in the middle courtyard (madya mandala) of Agung Temple of Pengotan village and resumed to the temple innermost courtyard. There, the couples sit down at the wedding pavilion separately to eat betel together. Local community names it the petemuan or rendezvous. It means the couples have taken a new life or upgraded to be community members. Next, the couples take leave by saying prayers first at sanggara agung gelagah. After the procession, the couples will undergo abstinence procession, where they are not allowed to cross the customary road for the next three days. If the couple’s house is on the west side of the road, they are not allowed to go to the house on the east side of the road and vice versa.

“After three days, then from Purusa (groom) to Predana (bride) brought a tipat bantal or cake oblations indicating the end of the mass wedding procession, and then the women follow to stay at their husband’s residence,” explained Jero Kopok. (kmb40)

The staple menu item at Giang Cafe in Hanoi’s pulsating Old Quarter is made with ice cold beer topped with creamy egg yolks whipped with sugar and a touch of butter to boost richness.

Owner Nguyen Chi Hoa said he came up with the recipe in 1999, curious how the combination might turn out.

“I made egg beer just for myself ... I thought it was good, so I decided to give it a try to see if anyone agreed,” he told AFP in his packed terracotta-tiled cafe.

The creamy beer concoction wasn’t such a dramatic departure from his most popular menu item: Vietnamese coffee topped with sweetened egg froth, now enjoyed in cafes across Hanoi among locals and tourists alike.

Hoa claims it was his father who came up with the recipe in 1946 as an affordable alternative to the cappuccinos sipped by French colonial occupiers, who made them with cow’s milk -- a luxury ingredient for most Vietnamese under French rule.

“Poor people could also drink egg coffee because they had lots of chickens, so they

just cracked an egg, added sugar and mixed it together -- then we had egg coffee,” he said in the cafe where black-and-white photos of his family hang on the walls.

Hoa didn’t stop at coffee and beer, and he also offers frothy eggs drinks made with rum, matcha, chocolate and even Coca Cola.

To keep up with demand for his whipped delights his daughter cracks 1,000 eggs every morning to be beaten by machine throughout the day. Though many of Hoa’s customers have never heard of egg beer, he said he has won most over -- especially those from beer-guzzling Germany -- and sells up to 20 mugs a day.

“It’s very special, it tastes like dessert, plus the beer,” said Malaysian visitor ST Lim. In a city better known for its ubiquitous open-air beer markets called “bia hoi”, Hoa said his unique beer beverage is still met with scepticism by some.

But he’s hoping to sway them -- even beauty-conscious drinkers: “This is very good for your skin, bright skin,” Hoa said with a smile. (afp)

SINGAPORE - Tech giants have reacted with horror after Singapore proposed laws against “fake news” allowing authorities to order the removal of content and impose hefty fines, in what critics say is an assault on free speech.

The government unveiled a bill last week containing tough measures, including powers for ministers to order social media sites like Facebook to put warnings next to posts authorities believe to be false and in extreme cases take them down.

If an action is deemed mali-

cious and damaging to Singapore’s interests, companies could be hit with fines of up to Sg$1 million ($740,000). Individuals could face jail terms of up to 10 years.

Authorities in the tightly-controlled country -- long criticised for restricting civil liberties -- insist the measures are necessary to stop the circulation of falsehoods which could sow divisions in the multiethnic city-state.

Simon Milner, Facebook’s vice president of public policy in AsiaPacific, said the social media giant was concerned about potentially being compelled to remove content.

“Giving people a place to express themselves freely and safely is important to us and we have a responsibility to handle any government request to remove alleged misinformation carefully and thoughtfully,” he said in a statement.

The internet is a relatively free space in Singapore and there are some local alternative news sites, which are typically more critical of the authorities than the traditional, progovernment newspapers and TV. Singapore is among several countries pushing legislation to fight fake news, and the government stressed ordering “corrections” to be placed alongside falsehoods would be the primary response, rather than jail or fines.

A government decision can also be appealed to the courts.

In November, Facebook refused a request to remove an article linking Singapore to a financial scandal in Malaysia which the government said was untrue -- prompting the law ministry to say the firm “cannot be relied upon to filter falsehoods”.

Critics say one of the most worrying aspects of the new legislation is that it is up to authorities to decide what is false and what is not.

While authorities insist decisions can be appealed, Kirsten Han, the Singapore-based editor of regional

news site New Naratif, said most people do not have the resources or will to fight the government.

“Even if you are convinced that your Facebook post is in the right, how many average Singaporeans would appeal to the minister, and then spend thousands of dollars to hire a lawyer and file an application in the court?” she told AFP. Human Rights Watch has described the bill as “sweepingly broad” while critics note Singapore already has tough laws against sedition, defamation and disturbing racial harmony, that can be used to police the web.

But it is not yet clear how the legislation -- which is likely to pass easily through the ruling party-dominated parliament -will be used in practice, and some believe authorities will wield it cautiously.

“I think that the government will be very careful in their implementation of the law,” said Professor Ang Peng Hwa, from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information in Singapore.

“I think, in general, there’s a very high level of trust in the government and its institutions by foreign entities, and so I don’t see them... being too trigger-happy about the implementation of this bill.” (afp)

Two fun reasons to visit the village of Cassel in Flanders, France

THE village of Cassel in France’s Nord department region with its cobbled streets, quiet atmosphere and traditional Flemish buildings feels like a romantic relic of a bygone era.

Though it was originally created by the Romans on top of a prominent hill (Mont Cassel) overlooking the lush rolling pastures of French Flanders, the rulers of Flanders picked up the pieces after the demise of the Roman Empire and the Flemish influence is still evident.

Though many a holiday-maker has driven or worse – bypassed altogether – Cassel on their way to Lille or Paris, we offer two fantastic reasons to stop and stare.

Musée de Flandre Musée de Flandre (Flanders Museum) is located in a stunning 17th century Flemish building on the main street of Cassel, with foundations dating back to the medieval period.

You will find some of the finest Flemish artworks and paintings

in the world here. Currently they are hosting a special exhibition of Fêtes et Kermesses au temps des Brueghel until July 14th (€6 adult entry).

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (also spelt “Brueghel”) is renowned for his Dutch and Flemish Renaissance paintings. Many of them feature imaginative, joyful and sometimes barmy renditions of parties and celebrations. Sadly his own works are not here but you can see them in The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. However, the good news is that works based on his paintings are here in abundance.

Eleven room showcase these and as well as artworks created by his two sons, Jan I and Pieter II. Most of the paintings depict the poorest of society, and they provide an important social commentary on

life in the Renaissance period.

More than 100 paintings and engravings depict fairs, weddings and other community events that took place in 16th and 17th centuries, some with incredibly funny and strange depictions. Almost every painting contains a stupidlydressed “fool”, who is a visual representation of excess and naughtiness. Men projectile vomit after glugging too much mead, couples embrace passionately behind trees and brawlers throw punches with gay abandon.

To top the entertainment off are the amusing holographic jesters that pop-up while stories of peasant parties during the Baroque period unfold.

Amid all this are numerous depictions of brides: sobbing brides, bored brides and drunken brides all

make an appearance. There is also an interesting selection of sartorial hat choices including a beehive, a crown made of vegetables and a hat that looks like a butter churner.

One inebriated bride even wears a colander on her head as her terrified husband looks on with pure terror.

My personal favourite was ”Village festival” by Jan I Bruegel, which forms part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Collection.

The painting contains an incredible level of detail and expression, portraying dozens of “Lilliputian” characters dancing in celebration.

Whether or not you are a Bruegel fan, the exhibition is brilliantly curated and great fun. The exhibition is family friendly and we saw several groups of children who genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves.

The gardens at Mont des Récollets The Jardins du Mont des Récollets (a 5-minute drive from Musée

de Flandre) are part of an old, converted farm and will open to the public on 10 April 2019 (€6 adult entry). As with any typical Flemish farm, you enter the gardens though the orchard, and first impressions are of a small, lovingly tended garden.

However, as you weave through various hedges, nooks and corridors a magnificent garden with more and 20 themed “rooms” appears. These include the “embroidery room” with hedges designed to look like a knitting pattern and the “Berlingots room” with hedges groomed to look like sweets.

The farmhouse is almost as idyllic as the gardens, and overlooks the stunning Flemish countryside.

It has since been converted into a restaurant filled with old pots and pans and hand-made wooden tables and chairs.

This is a perfect spot for a traditional Flemish lunch or a cup of tea before you move on. (net)

Steel wool photography

STEEL WOOL photography is actually one of the applications of light painting photography using steel wool as a medium or object to be photographed. Steel wool is a neatly rolled iron fiber strand commonly used for carpentry or furniture. In light painting (painting with light), we will create by using a slow shutter speed, so that the camera can record light trails making a variety of unique light patterns in accordance with the wishes of photographers. This technique is mainly to illuminate several areas or points on the object so that only the illuminated area is recorded in the photo.

In steel wool photography, we will make a photo shoot with a slow shutter speed technique and apply steel wool burned and rotated in such a way. Sparks of the rotated steel wool will produce very attractive lines of light.

Aside from steel wool, in this

photo shoot we also need matches or batteries to light steel-wool, ropes measuring around 1.5 meters and egg beaters or other objects used to tie steel wool so that it does not come loose when rotated. A sturdy tripod is also very necessary to minimize shocks when the camera

shutter is pressed because we use a slow shutter speed. Apply a wide lens to cover a large enough area.

Ensure security After that, set the camera to manual mode with an aperture of around f/8 - f/16 depending on the shutter speed requirement. Apply

a low ISO (ISO 100-200) with a shutter speed adjusted to exposure.

For example, utilize 10-20 seconds shutter speed at ISO 200 and F/11.

Of course, it is strongly recommended to change the camera settings until the maximum results are obtained. Use tungsten white balance to make the sky bluer and it is highly recommended to take pictures with RAW format for ease of post processing or photo processing Last but not least, make sure safety when shooting. Do not take photos at home, keep away from children, dry grass or other flam-

mable objects such as gasoline, LPG and the like. Adjust the distance of shooting with the object so that it is not exposed to a spark of steel wool. Meanwhile, people who help rotate steel wool need to be protected by using protective clothing or raincoats, hats or helmets.

Keep in mind, the primary key to getting good and attractive steel wool photos is to be creative and never tired of trying and exploring. The more often you try, the quality of the resulting photo will be certainly getting better. Happy painting with lights! (ian)

Explore economic potential by improving forex trading

DENPASAR - Bali’s economy with its major income acquired from tourism sector should be able to grow even higher. Particularly, it can do if the payment transaction or foreign currency exchange is well managed. There are no illegal money changers in Bali disrupting the image of Bali tourism. This has been happening for years but there are no significant solution.

An economist from Udayana University, Prof. Wayan Ramantha, stated that one of the completeness of tourism is currency.

“We rely heavily on our tourism from foreign tourists, from various countries. Thus, they have a variety of currencies. After arriv-

ing here, they certainly look for rupiah, our currency. They need a money changer to exchange theirs into rupiah, certainly the legal ones,” he said in the public discussion at The Vasini Hotel Ballroom, Denpasar, recently.

Even though we are quite

proud of the current tourism conditions, we also need to compare with other countries such as Singapore, Malaysia et cetera.

“Actually, there are still many potentials we need to explore,” he said. One of the ways to explore them is by improving the money

changer, improving our foreign currency market, and eliminating illegal money changers.

In addition, among legal money changers, there must be provisions, standards as well as coaching so as not to disrupt the image of our institution which ultimately damages the image of tourism. “So, we improve this in order to actually improve and increase our economic growth,” he added.

With the presence of illegal money changers, tourists will be reluctant to come to Bali. They need a sense of security and comfort, not only physically safe from being spoofed but also safe in the matter that they are not lied to about rates and so on. When there are other choices in other countries, they will find comfort and safety to the countries. In many countries, especially in developed countries and countries of the origin of Bali tourists, there are no illegal money changers. This is one of Bali’s weaknesses needing to be improved that ultimately is expected to increase tourism in Indonesia and Bali.

Chairperson of the Money Changer Association (APVA) of Bali, Hj. Ayu Astuti Dhama, stated that every money changer entrepreneur must be proactive in reporting anything suspicious to the Financial Transaction Reporting Center (PPATK). Each money changer company must apply the practice of Know Your Costumer (KYC). If there is a suspicious

transaction, immediately report it to the PPATK. “Get to know customers that will be transacting. We anticipate that currently illegal money changers in Jakarta, Bali, Aceh and Kalimantan are doing a lot of business transaction of foreign exchange, but do not have permission,” he said.

In accordance with regulations of Bank Indonesia (BI), licensed money changers are prohibited from transacting with illegal money changers. Although the money changers are scattered throughout Indonesia, there are still many money changer companies having no license or legality.

Ayu revealed, currently there are still many money changers making transactions by using personal account or employees’ account, not using a company’s account. “This must be avoided.

Well, if you find something like that, please immediately report it because this action is a very fatal crime,” he explained.

Division Head of Payment System, Service and Administration of Bali Representative Office of BI, Teguh Setiadi, stated that BI only supervised legal KUPVA (money changers) because the illegal ones are beyond its authority. “We regularly supervise the legal ones by offsite method through their reports. However, on site we are also shifting because so far the number of KUPVA in Bali has 124 headquarters and more than 500 branch offices,” he affirmed. (kmb42)

Hundreds of millennial generation attend creative classes, MANGUPURA - The increasingly intense global competition requires the young generation to be creative and highly competitive. To that end, hundreds of millennial generations consisting of pupils, college students and people with disabilities had the opportunity to take part in the Creative Class held by ITDC at Hotel Haris, Kuta, on Friday (Apr. 5).

having high value in the future.

“This activity is in the context of the 21st SOE Anniversary, the real work program of SOE presented for the country. Hopefully, this effort can increase the motivation and enthusiasm of young people in order to be able to become the engine of creativity and innovation in various fields,” he said.

The SOE Creative Class, said Wirawan, is an insight and skill debriefing program for the millennial generation. It is meant to prepare themselves to face global competition through life-based learning.

There are 30 SOEs participating in the event by holding similar activities throughout Indonesia with a total target of 6,000 participants. “We at the ITDC are entrusted to hold the Creative Class in the Bali Province,” he added.

This SOE Creative Class Program is also part of the company’s social responsibility program to the surrounding community, especially in terms of providing comprehensive education on the important role of younger generation in commitment and the spirit of the SOE is Present for the Country, chiefly in dealing

with current global competition. He admitted it is also in line with the vision and mission of the Ministry of SOE prioritizing the strategic role of SOEs as a pillar of national development.

Managing Director of the ITDC Nusa Dua, IGN Ardita, added that his management always provides opportunities for young entertainers to be able to perform in Nusa Dua. CANNES - British acting legend Dame Diana Rigg said Friday that women must be “finally paid their due” after decades of screen sexism and lower pay.

The 80-year-old, who played the hard-nosed Lady Olenna Tyrell in “Game of Thrones”, revealed that she protested when she found out that she was earning less than the cameraman on “The Avengers”, the cult 1960s British television series that made her famous.

“I had nothing against the cameraman but I complained and made a fuss of it,” she told AFP at the Canneseries TV festival in the French Riviera resort, where she is receiving an icon award.

“I was called all sorts of things, and nobody supported me,” she added, in what she called her first big battle with “male authority”.

Her co-star Patrick Macnee looked the other way, she said.

“Patrick was a dear and sweet but wanted a quiet life. And I was trouble,” Rigg said.

In keeping with Emma Peel, the fearless spy she played in the series, the actress did not take it lying down.

“I made a bit of a song and dance and demanded more... but there was no sisterhood” to help.

Mick Jagger says ‘on the mend’ after medical procedure

NEW YORK - Legendary Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger said Friday he is “on the mend” after reportedly undergoing heart valve replacement surgery in New York -- news that gave his legions of fans a fright.

Less than a week ago, the band announced they would postpone the North American leg of their upcoming tour so the 75-year-old Jagger could receive medical treatment.

replacement, allowing the artist to avoid major surgery that would open his chest.

The British rocker was resting in the hospital, according to Billboard, citing anonymous sources who said he must lay low for four to five days so he can heal.

Prabowo optimistic of winning presidential election

JAKARTA - Presidential candidate number 02 Prabowo Subianto has expressed optimism that he would be able to win 2019 presidential election.

“Brothers and sisters, i am very optimistic that we will win the presidential election,” Prabowo Subianto said during a grand campaign at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) here on Sunday.

Prabowo underlined that he focused on working and fighting for the people of Indonesia when advancing in the 2019 Presidential Election.

By 03.00 a.m. on Sunday, tens of thousands of people have packed the soccer field at the stadium.

The 2019 presidential election was followed by two pairs of candidates, Jokowi-Ma`ruf and Prabowo-Sandiaga.
