Blues legend B.B. King hospitalized

LOS ANGELES - American blues legend B.B. King has Hall of Fame, and has been been hospitalised, The Los Angeles Times reported Monday, ranked among the greatest guitar citing representatives for the singer but giving no details about players of all time.

He has lived with Type II diahis condition.

sippi-born Riley B. King is a member of the Rock and Roll

Representatives gave no information about where King

was being treated, the Times said.

NEW YORK — Giuliana Rancic isn’t making any promises that she’ll return to “Fashion Police” in the fall.

The E! Entertainment personality appeared on the “Today” show Monday to promote her new book, “Going off Script.”

And she also seemed to go off-script at the interview’s conclusion, when host Savannah Guthrie asked if Rancic “will be there” when “Fashion Police” airs again in September.

Hedging, Rancic said only, “We’ll see.”

The show, formerly hosted by the late Joan Rivers, has recently been in turmoil with the abrupt departures of panelist Kelly Osbourne and new host Kathy Griffin.

Before that, Rancic took heat for a wisecrack about actress Zendaya’s dreadlocks that some viewers, including the actress-singer, deemed racist.

But Rancic repeated her explanation that the joke was misinterpreted after editing removed the context. (ap)

Daniel Craig has knee surgery during break on Bond filming

LONDON — James Bond may be indestructible, but the actors who play 007 are not. Daniel Craig has had arthroscopic knee surgery in between filming the latest Bond flick “Spectre.”

Producers say he underwent a “minor

procedure” during the Easter production break. He is believed to have suffered the injury while filming action scenes for “Spectre” in Mexico.

Eon Productions said Monday Craig will rejoin the production when it resumes

DENPASAR - Given the significant role and far reaching effects that tourism plays on the island, the government of Bali has begun drafting a master plan for the development of tourism over the next 15 years. Tourism has become the main thread that weaves together life in Bali but these threads have become quite tangled. The plan to untangle these knots is outlined in the Draft of a Regional Bylaw concerning the masterplan for regional tourism development for the Province of Bali between 2014 and 2029.

According to Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, the regional bylaw draft referred to as the Bali Tourism Development Masterplan 2014-2029 is mandated by Law No.10/2009 on tourism, wherein each province and county must have a regional tourism development masterplan.

In essence, the drafted plan addresses issues related to human resource management, tourism destination development, marketing and other aspects of tourism. “The regional bylaw draft is important so that there is a clear direction for tourism development in Bali,” said Pastika.

He added that part of the future tourism development plan, includes maintaining the uniqueness of Bali, including local customs and culture to avoid them being eroded. He insists that investments in tourism should be done selectively and carefully filtered so as not to damage the customs, culture nor the environment.

“Investments in tourism development must not damage the environment, customs or culture of Bali.

They should be based on the Tri Hita Karana concept although it is not easy,” said Pastika.

Deputy Chairman of the Bali House, Nyoman Sugawa Korry, said that a strategic tourism development plan for Bali is indeed required for the long term so that clear directives and rules can prevent sporadic, temporary and haphazard development. “Tourism is important as the principle economy of Bali, so we should arrange for, plan and provide support with appropriate regulations and regulatory bodies,” he said.

He added that there are a few important points that should be addressed in the regional bylaw draft of the Bali Tour-

ism Development Masterplan 20142029. For example, tourism supporting infrastructure such as roads, diversification of tourism products, objects or tourist destinations and human resources. “Most importantly, there must be a variety of tourism products and proper landscaping.

Also, these should not be jumbled into South Bali. The development of future tourism should be focused on East and North Bali and must be supported by adequate infrastructure,” added Sugawa Korry.

In connection to the recent tourist visa exemptions for a number of countries such as Japan, China, Russia and South Korea, Sugawa Korry believes that there will be a surge in tourists arriving from these countries. Our human resources should anticipate this and be ready to face the situation, tour guides who can speak the languages of these countries in particular should be made available. “We have to prepare and add the number of tour guide who can speak Korean, Russian, Japanese and Chinese in order to optimize the services extended to these travelers,” he concluded. SINGARAJA - The lack of attention to existing drainage infrastructure in the Lovina tourist area, means that there is flooding every time it rains hard, causing residents and tourist alike to complain.

As the heart of tourism in North Bali, Lovina should receive special attention from relevant agencies in addressing the drainage problems there.

The impact of neglect is made clear when even a few hours of rain consistently causes flooding in certain areas. Flooding recently occurred at a five-way intersection in Lovina, near Binaria Beach, but the most severe flooding happened at the intersection Kalibukbuk and Anturan where flood water inundated the streets and caused sever traffic jams.

Made Tama, a motorist from Gerokgak, was forced to push his motorcycle when its motor died from being submerged in the murky water. All he could do was hope that the government would do take action to help prevent future flooding in the Lovina area. “My motorcycle suddenly broke down after being submerged in the flood water. I expect the government to ensure that drainage systems in Lovina function properly,” he said.

A legislator from Commission IV of the Buleleng House,

Made Mangku Ariawan, acknowledged improvements must be made to a number of the drains at intersection in Lovina so as to prevent such flooding during the rainy season. The Public Works Agency was urged make immediate repairs to the tourist area of Lovina’s drainage systems.

“I urge the Buleleng Public Works Agency to act quickly and find a solution. Due to flooding, congestion occurred along nearly four kilometers of the road leading to Lovina Beach,” he said. (kmb34)

DENPASAR - Police in cooperation with immigration officials, are still working to identify the 39 people from China and Taiman involved in an international fraud syndicate. The Bali Immigration Office have processes three suspects.

The remaining suspects are being held at Villa Wayan on Jalan Sekar Sari Gang Nusa Indah No. 12, East Denpasar.

Since the immigration office does not have sufficient space to accommodate them, they are temporarily being held at the villa and are heavily guarded by police. “The letter of handover has been issued,” said spokesperson for the Bali Police Heri Wiyantoto.

Police are also investigating their involvement in the beatings that occurred at Vila Kasa Bumbak on Jalan Bumbak Dauh, North Kuta.

“The Criminal Investigation Unit is still coordinating with relevant parties to uncover their identities.

Our personnel are still checking into the matter,” said the Chief of Badung Police, Tony Binsar.

The police have yet to receive any reports regarding their involvement in the case of the beatings. “If any evidence emerges, we will surely process it. We are still awaiting the results of the investigation,” he said.

As Spokesman for Bali Police, stated, evidence is required to determine one’s involvement in a case.

“Evidence is still being sought. If the suspects are not found to have violated any Indonesian crimes, they will be returned to their home country.

If they are found to be involved in such violations, we will coordinate with the immigration office and the case will be processed here (Bali— Ed),” he said.

Meanwhile, the villa owner, Dewa Putu Sudarsana, 45, said that he suspects that the culprits of the beatings are among the captives being held at the villa. He already reported his suspicions to Immigration Supervision and Enforcement of Class I Denpasar. “Allegedly one of the culprits secured here (Immigration Supervision and Enforcement—Ed) was involved. Having seen photos of the offenders that are being held on Jalan Sekar Sari, I am confident that some of them were involved in the

beatings. I am still coordinating with police and immigration,” he said.

Immigration Division Head of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights of Bali Province, T. Sabaru, accompanied by the Head of Information and Immigration Communications, Saroha Manulang, confirmed that they are waiting from word from the police as these departments will not take action before the police process is complete. “In principle, they are clearly foreigners which means that part of the task of processing them lies within the authority of the Immigration Office. We have only received three people so far, while the remaining people are still being handled by the police,” he said.

The three people are being examined related to their presence in Bali and undergoing interrogation regarding their travel documents, residence permits and their activities in Bali.

“We are still in the process of enquiry, one of them, a Taiwanese citizen, remains silent,” said Sabaru.

Only 32 of the 39 suspects’ passports have been secured. Their date of arrival is not the same though they all received a Visa on Arrival.

“Allegedly they are broke the law by doing non-travel related activities while holding this visa,” he said.

As for the alleged offenders who are not carrying passports, Sabaru asserted that any foreigner coming into Indonesia must have a passport.

If they do not show their passport, possibly it is hidden, dumped or deposited. If they really do not hold a passport at all they will have to contact their respective governments. “The examination is meant to identify the purpose of their visit to Bali. Each residence permit has a specified purpose of visit, such as working, investment, travel, running a business and social visit. If they have committed violations, sanctions will be imposed,” he added.

As previsouly reported, a joint team involving Chinese Police, Indonesian Police Headquarters, Bali Police, Denpasar Police and East Denpasar Police raided Villa Wayan on Saturday (Apr. 4). The officers arrested 38 people at the villa and another was arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban. They were allegedly involved in cases of fraud and blackmail. (kmb36)

DENPASAR - The Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana - harmony among fellow human beings, harmony towards God, and harmony with the environment, all of which if really adhered to are the mainstays of life, forms the basis of an award given annually to a small variety of institutions here in Bali.

Begawan Foundation, on April 1st, was the proud recipient of a Tri Hita Karana Nugraha Awards for 2015. The award, containing universal values whose concept and implementation does not discriminate in terms of ethnic group, race, ancestry and religion, was given by a selection committee, led by Bali Travel News (BTN).

There were only eight recipients, mostly tourism oriented.

Learn to swim with an Olympian

From her first holiday to Bali over three years ago, Luisa Striani developed a love affair with the island and, after subsequent biannual treks back to Bali for longer each time, she decided to move here permanently in July 2014.

“I love the culture, the food, the people, the way of life and the energy it gives you!”

From Montesarchio, a small city in the province of Benevento, Southern Italy, it was clear Luisa was to follow a career that kept her feet wet! Finishing school in 1996 she went on to hold a position on the Italian National Swim Team from 1997 to 2004, earning multiple bronze and silver medals in numerous world championships with a career highlight as finalist for Italy in the Sydney 2000 Olympics! She holds national records for freestyle and is ten times Italian champion for Freestyle and Butterfly.

Now as if that’s not enough in achievements or accolades, Luisa has

also graduated from Naples University with first class honours in Motor Sciences, has been awarded “Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana” from the Italian president (my Italian is hopeless but from what I can gather, it’s a very prestigious award!) and is an accredited senior coach with the Italian Swimming Federation. Judging from that long list of credentials I am pretty confident my kids are in safe and very qualified hands.

Fortuitously, several months ago, The Canggu Club was in the market for an internationally qualified coach and I would guarantee that Luisa more than fit the bill. She teaches swim classes from 3 month olds and school age through to adults and also offers one on one tuition for those wishing to hone their skills in the water. Her classes focus on developing the correct technique but for the kids there is also a need to

If there are hindrances and obstacles, solutions are found and the programme goes forward. The most recent releases by Dr Jane Goodall in June 2014 and Ban Ki Moon in August 2014 at Sibang are a vindication that the foundation is on the right track, and that its goals are achievable.

A not-for-profit organization, Begawan Foundation relies on donations to assist its important work. Funding to support and expand existing programs, monitor and engage local communities and schools in conservation and preservation of the environment, along with developing and maintaining its breeding site in Sibang Kaja is always welcome.

Luisa enjoys teaching at The Canggu Club because it is a melting pot of nationalities. Despite the obvious obstacles language barriers can create, she feels she can transmit her love for the water and passion for swimming.

“It’s like a universal language!” Judging from the fun my kids seem to be having in the pool, I’d say they are definitely feeling the love.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PALO ALTO - The world has only touched the surface of technological progress and computers may soon be able to transmit the complexities of human personalities, a prominent inventor says.

Sebastian Thrun, who founded the Google X laboratory where the Internet search giant has developed Google Glass and driverless cars, said it was often difficult to grasp concepts before they come to fruition.

But he said that, much like data is now routinely transmitted via computers, the same may soon be true for full personalities.

“Perhaps we can get to the point where we can outsource our own personal experiences entirely into a computer -- and possibly our own personality. Maybe we’re going to have a demo at some point where the computer runs ‘Sebastian,’” he told a symposium Thursday evening at Stanford University.

“It’s maybe unimaginable but it’s not as far off as people think.

It’s very doable,” said the Germanborn computer scientist, who remains a fellow at Google.

“I do believe that in all these technologies we have just scratched the surface. Almost everything interesting hasn’t been invented yet,” he said.

Google added the option to convert its popular navigation service into the Pac-Man video game on Tuesday morning, around the same day the calendar turned to April 1 in Asia. That ushered in a day when Google shows off its playful side by injecting more frivolity into its services.

The gag on Google Maps enables

visitors to click on a Pac-Man symbol in the lower left of the screen to play the video game on whatever location is listed in the address bar.

As has been happening for nearly 35 years, Pac-Man eats blinking dots while trying to elude four “ghosts” — Pinky, Blinky, Inky and Clyde.

The game can be played in Google Maps on desktop computers or mobile devices that have the latest app update for Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android software.

Peer-to-peer lending surges in US, challenging traditional banks

Relations between Jokowi and Megawati have lately soured over the president’s decision to not install Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the new National Police chief.

The president cancelled the candidacy of Budi Gunawan due to strong public protests after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Budi a corruption suspect.

The party and the Parliament, which already approved Budi’s candidacy, had insisted that the president should install the three-star police general as new police chief.

Budi is known to be close to Megawati as her former bodyguard during her tenure as president.

Leo said a meeting between Jokowi, Megawati, and other party leaders at the congress could be an important moment to knit synergy for the best interest of the party.

The public will witness whether Jokowi will appear at the congress as a president or as a party cadre, he added. (ant)

42 Indonesian citizens evacuated from Yemen transit in Bali

KUTA - A total of 42 Indonesian citizens from restive Yemen arrived at Ngurah Rai airport in Bali for transit before continuing their journey to their own regions.

On Monday the citizens left Yemen through Doha by Qatar Airlines with flight number QR-962 and arrived in Bali at about 5.09 p.m. local time.

The Indonesian citizens who consist of men, women and children, then left the Ngurah Rai airport at 8.00 p.m. local time after dealing with Immigration and conducted their daily prayer.

According to the Evacuation Coordinator of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Gatot Abdullah Mansour, majority of the citizens who arrived from the conflict-torn country are students and their families who come from three areas in the country.

In the meantime, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi said in Jakarta that as many as 89 Indonesians are still in Aden, Yemen, and cannot be evacuated yet due to unfavorable conditions.

“We are concerned about our citizens in Aden because they cannot be taken out of the city to a nearby seaport yet,” she stated at a press briefing here on Monday.

The minister added that the Indonesian Evacuation Task Force had provided a ship to evacuate the citizens near the seaport, but a change in circumstances resulted in them failing to reach the location.

As part of efforts to evacuate the citizens in Yemen, Marsudi has discussed the situation with some parties, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Saudi Arabian Minister of Defense. (ant)

Harvest season arrives, farmers complain as grain unsold

TABANAN - Rice of some regions such as Kerambitan and Kediri is ready to be harvested.

Unfortunately, amid the harvest season and the increase in grain basic purchasing price (HPP), according to Head of Tabanan Agriculture, Foodstuffs, and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana, there are still problems experienced by farmers where their grain has not been sold.

Budana revealed his party gets a complaint from some subak leaders regarding the fate of farmers because so far their grains have not been purchased. “Therefore, we will check it first to Perpadi,” he said. He continued that Perpadi has an obligation to buy the grain of farmers in the region in accordance with the basic purchasing price (HPP) set by the government.

The increase in basic purchasing price at IDR 3,700 at farmer level and IDR 3,750 at milling plant level has been disseminated to farmers.

Budana expected the Perpadi or harvesters not to purchase the grain of farmers under the basic purchasing price. If there is a purchasing price less than the basic price, there will be sanction imposed to Perpadi especially in the case of allocation of the rural economic venture agency (LUEP) fund. “If Perpadi purchases grain under the basic purchasing price, it can have an impact on the termination of LUEP fund they receive in the coming years,” said Budana. He also appealed if there are people purchasing grain from farm-

ers under the basic purchasing price set by the government, they can be reported to the Agriculture Agency to be tackled immediately.

Though the increase in the basic price of grain itself was disseminated, it has not been evenly distributed. As evidence, some farmers in Tabanan do not know if there is an increase in the basic purchasing price of grain. The leader of Subak Timan Agung, Dewa Putu Suara, admitted that he does not know about the increase in the basic purchasing price of dry grain. At his subak area,

harvest has not been carried out by the entire area.

“There has been harvester purchasing the grain. Every 100 square meters of paddy is valued at IDR 200,000 to IDR 225,000 depending on the quality of rice. In our subak area, some farmers sell their grains, while some others do not because they keep it for self-consumption.

So far, we do not get the selling price of dry grain whether there is a price increase,” he explained.

According to the Chairman of the National Farmers Contact (KTNA) of Tabanan, Nengah Mawan, the basic purchasing price of grain at IDR 3,700 at farmer level has great potential to be sold below the basic price in line with the harvest season.

“Today, it is still traded in accordance with the basic purchasing price.

Possibly, the price will go down as the peak of harvest occurs late April,” he said. He explained the opportunities for the declining price of grain at farmer level is quite large because the increasing production from normal condition will result in the suppression to the selling price in the market.

Moreover, the current price of grain at farmer level has touched the limit of the basic purchasing price so that it will likely move down.

“If this happens it needs to make coordination with local government to address the problem so that the income of farmers can meet their expectation in the middle of current harvest season,” he said. (kmb24)

Urban park in Gianyar overrun by vendors

GIANYAR - Random peddling by street vendors in Ciung Wanara urban park every afternoon, seems to become a common practice.

In fact the number of vendors is steadily increasing and sat rating to disturb traffic in the area as well as damage the park itself.

Initially, there were only three people selling their goods around

Ciung Wanara park.

However, due to negligence in enforcing regulations more and more vendors have set up shop there, resulting in a chaotic and crammed atmosphere in a place that was meant to be relaxing. Chief of the Gianyar Municipal Police, Gede Daging, confirmed on Monday (Apr. 6) that the police are aware

of the situation and explained that despite having already made arrests, many stubborn vendors have simply returned to the park. “We are going to intensify our actions,” he said.

The merchants sell their wares in the park staring in the evening and into the night, and although police officers have been monitoring the

situation, the last few days have called the officers to other matters so the park was left unsupervised.

Daging said that in order to keep an eye out for rogue street vendors around the Ciung Wanara urban park, municipal police officers bring their own chairs to sit wait for the vendors to arrive at which point the officers step in.

In the future, along with other renovations vent made to the park, two police posts will be set up so that officers can oversea activities in the park assuring that it remains beautiful and comfortable without the disturbance of street vendors.

“For now we will intensify our afternoon inspections and surveillance,” he said. (kmb16)

Opposition strike shuts down Nepal; protesters, police clash

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Opposition protesters clashed with police and set vehicles on fire in Nepal’s capital on Tuesday, as they enforced a nationwide general strike that crippled life throughout the country.

The alliance of 30 opposition parties is demanding the Himalayan nation’s new constitution draft be passed by a national consensus. The ruling coalition has been attempting to get the draft approved through a vote in parliament after negotiations with the opposition failed.

Protesters and police clashed in Kathmandu, the capital, on the first day of the three-day strike. Riot police fired tear gas shells, while

the protesters retaliated by throwing stones. The demonstrators also set a taxi and a motorcycle on fire.

Taxi driver Niraj Vaidya told reporters that the protesters poured gasoline on his taxi and set it on fire while he was still inside the vehicle.

He was able to escape, but said he lost his taxi in the fire.

General strikes are a common tactic for the opposition in Nepal, and it is common for protesters to attack vehicles, shops and businesses that defy the calls to strike.

Schools were closed and markets shuttered across the country. Highways were deserted, with protesters allowing only emergency vehicles on the roads. (ap)

TEHRAN — Iran’s official news agency says about 200 hardliners staged a protest against the framework deal struck last week between Iran and the six world powers on limits on Tehran’s nuclear program.

IRNA says Tuesday’s gathering took place in front of the parliament in the Iranian capital without prior permission from authorities.

The rally coincided with a closed session of parliament during which Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad

Zarif appeared before lawmakers to explain the framework agreement.

The deal, to be finalized by June 30, has been overwhelmingly backed by Iran’s establishment, including President Hassan Rouhani but Iranian hard-liners have denounced it as a disaster for Iran.

The deal is to curb Iran’s bombcapable technology while giving Tehran quick access to bank accounts, oil markets and financial assets blocked by international sanctions. (ap)

The Prevention of Terrorism Act bill was passed by Parliament’s lower house in the wee hours of the morning after hours of debate, with 79 votes in favor and 60 against.

The law allows authorities to detain suspects indefinitely without trial, with no court challenges permitted.

The government said the measure was needed because dozens of Malaysians have been arrested since 2013 for suspected links to the Islamic State group. Authorities on Sunday arrested 17 people, including an Indonesian militant, accused of planning to rob banks and attack police stations and army camps to obtain weapons.

Critics said the new law was a revival of the Internal Security Act, which was repealed in 2012. New

York-based Human Rights Watch called it a “giant step backwards for human rights” in Malaysia, and said it raised concerns that the government will once again use the law to intimidate and silence vocal critics.

“By restoring indefinite detention without trial, Malaysia has re-opened Pandora’s Box for politically motivated, abusive state actions that many had thought was closed when the abusive Internal Security Act was revoked in 2012,” the group’s deputy Asia director, Phil Robertson, said in a statement.

Home Minister Zahid Hamidi, however, said the new law was crucial to curb the rise of Islamic militants. “This is a real threat, and prevention measures are needed,”

he said during the debate. It will take weeks before the bill becomes law, as it needs approval from the upper house and royal assent by the king, but those are considered formalities.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said the 17 people, aged from 14 to 49, were arrested during a secret meeting Sunday to plot attacks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s biggest city, and in the administrative capital of Putrajaya.

The group was planning to kidnap several high-profile individuals, rob banks for money, raid police stations and army camps for weapons, and procure more firearms from another terror group in a neighboring country, Khalid said in a statement Tuesday. (ap)

BUSINESS Samsung Electronics flags 30.5 percent on-year drop in Q1 profit

While annual inflation has continued to rise to levels last seen in 2002, month-on-month inflation has slowed so far this year to 1.2 percent in March, down from 2.2 percent in February and 3.9 percent in January.

Inflation of food prices remained above the overall rate of inflation, with 23 percent growth year-onyear in March and 1.6 percent against February’s prices. Russia’s government has banned food imports from the European Union and

other Western countries since August in response to sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Russia’s central bank expects the country’s gross domestic product to contract by between 3.5 and 4 percent this year. (ap)

SEOUL - Samsung Electronics flagged Tuesday better-thanexpected profits for the first quarter, with rising demand for memory chips helping offset slumping smartphone sales.

The South Korean electronics giant -- the world’s top mobile producer -- estimated an operating profit of 5.9 trillion won ($5.4 billion) for the January-March period.

The forecast was down 30.5 percent from a year ago, but beat average analyst expectations of around 5.5 trillion won, and was up 11.5 percent from the previous quarter.

Sales would likely reach 47 trillion won, down 12.4 percent from a year ago, Samsung said in its quarterly earnings estimate, which came days ahead of the much-anticipated launch of its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6.

Samsung hopes the new model will re-establish it as the clear global smartphone market leader over arch-rival Apple, which has enjoyed booming sales of its iPhone 6.

Several market trackers had Apple and Samsung tied in worldwide smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2014, while at least one suggested Apple had regained the throne it lost to Samsung back in 2011.

Samsung has seen profits sag since late 2013 due to heightened competition in the increasingly saturated smartphone market.

It has faced a double challenge from Apple in the high-end market and rising Chinese firms like Xiaomi and Lenovo in the mid- and low-end market.

NEW YORK — Americans hunting for a bargain on a new Beemer, bottle of Chateau Margaux or Hermes handbag thanks to the sliding euro should put away their gold cards. European luxury goods sold in the U.S. still carry luxurious price tags.

The European currency has fallen 10 percent against the dollar this year. In theory, car dealer-

ships, department stores and other companies that sell goods from Europe could pass on the savings to their American customers, said Ira Kalish, chief global economist at Deloitte, the consulting and accounting firm.

“But what would be the point of doing that?” Kalish asked. Demand for anything made in Europe is so strong that they have little trouble

moving merchandise. “From their perspective, it’s better to leave the price unchanged and pocket the profit.”

The euro has been in a long tailspin. Last April, it was trading just shy of $1.40. Since then, it sank as low as $1.04 in March before bouncing back to $1.10 on Monday.

In other words, you used to have to pay $1.40 to buy a single euro;

today, you pay just $1.10.

So where are the bargains?

There’s no reason to think that prices for Italian shoes and French red wines will fall along with the euro, analysts said. Part of the reason is that most European consumer products sold in the U.S. aren’t aimed at most consumers.

Russia inflation hits 16.9 percent in March

MOSCOW — Russia’s consumer price inflation hit 16.9 percent in March as the country heads for recession, the state statistics agency Rosstat said Monday.

Tuesday’s estimate, which comes ahead of audited results to be released later in the month, did not provide a net income figure.

It also gave no breakdown of divisional earnings, but analysts attributed the better-than-expected performance to profits from highmargin chip sales, which helped cushion the downturn in its overgrown mobile sector.

The company -- which produces a range of electronics products from chips to household appliances -- saw profits in its semiconductor division jump 35.7 percent on-year in the fourth quarter.

The firm’s newly upgraded chipmaking plants also helped cut production costs, Song MyungSup, analyst at HI Investment & Securities.

“Sales hovered below analysts’ expectation but profits rose, meaning the firm boosted profit by spending less rather than selling more,” Song said.

South Korea’s top firm by value saw its share price fall 0.54 percent on the Seoul stock market on Tuesday, with analysts saying the quarterly estimate had already been largely factored in.

Nam Dae-Jong, analyst for Seoulbased Hana Daetoo Securities, said the new Galaxy S6 smartphone would help turn things around for Samsung after the much-criticised Galaxy S5 flopped last year.

“I estimated the second-quarter operating profit at 6.4 trillion won but plan to raise it,” Nam said.

Blocking of alleged radical websites should be selective

SEMARANG - Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin has emphasized that any effort to block alleged radical websites should be carried out selectively.

Of the 19 websites recently blocked by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics at the request of the Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), in fact, not all of them were promoting radical ideology, and therefore, some of them lodged protests, the minister noted on Monday.

They protested because they have, so far, normally preached Islamic teachings to Indonesian Muslims, he remarked.

He stated that the freedom of expression should be respected.

“Therefore, we are grateful that the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has improved the blocking mechanism,” he affirmed.

Before deciding to block a website, the authorities must focus on two areas, according to Lukman.

First, the authorities must ensure whether the content is against the state ideology, and second, whether the procedure does not violate the law, he noted.

On March 29, 2015, the ministry blocked at least 19 websites, at the request of the BNPT in its letter number 149/K.BNPT/3/2015, stat-

ing that the online media sites promoted radical ideologies and were sympathizers of radicalism.

“We asked Internet service providers to block the websites this morning at the request of the BNPT. The agency analyzed the sites and found them spreading radicalism.

So, we blocked them after we received a request,” a spokesman for the ministry, Ismail Cawidu, stated on March 30, 2015.

The sites are arrahmah.com, voa-islam.com, ghur4ba.blogspot. com, panjimas.com, thoriquna. com, dakwatuna.com, kafilahmujahid.com, an-najah.net, muslimdaily.net, hidayatullah.com, salamonline.com, aqlislamiccenter.com, kiblat.net, dakwahmedia.com, muqawamah.com, lasdipo.com, gemaislam.com, eramuslim.com, and daulahislam.com.

The Indonesian police claimed that they had appealed to the BNPT to block the websites. The BNPT then put forth the suggestion to the Ministry of Communication and Informatics that later blocked the sites.

“We only made an appeal, following which the BNPT suggested it (the blocking) to the Communication and Informatics Ministry,” spokesman for the National Police (Polri) Brig. Gen. Anton Charliyan remarked at the Police Headquarters on April 1, 2015. (ant)

Badrodin Haiti’s bid revealed at House’s plenary session

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo’s letter bearing the nomination of Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as Indonesia’s new national police chief was read during the House of Representatives’ (DPR’s) plenary session on Tuesday.

“One of the agenda items of the House’s plenary meeting is reading President Joko Widodo’s letter. We shall also listen to the Supreme Audit Agency’s (BPK’s) report,” House Speaker Setya Novanto remarked.

The House’s plenary meeting was held a day after President Joko Widodo presided over a consultative meeting with the House leaders, including Setya Novanto, for talks about Badrodin Haiti’s nomination as the

country’s police chief and the 2015 revised state budget on Monday.

According to DPR Deputy Chairman Agus Hermanto, the president and lawmakers would not intervene in the decisionmaking process regarding the appointment of the figure to fill the deputy police chief’s post.

The final decision about that matter would be disclosed to the police institution, he noted.

din Haiti has become the country’s acting police chief to replace General Sutarman, whose term as national police chief was cut short prior to his official retirement in October 2015 by President Joko Widodo on January 16, 2015.

President held limited meeting on illegal fishing

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a limited meeting at his office on Tuesday to discuss illegal fishing, including sustainable ways to address the issue.

“We are going to discuss illegal fishing and the achievements we have made in the area of law enforcement against it,” President Jokowi remarked while opening the meeting.

Besides law enforcement against illegal fishing, the president also sought cooperation among relevant institutions to ensure the successful handling of fish theft and smuggling.

He stated that the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry should coordinate with the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (INTRAC) to uncover data about illegal fishing and to take action in accordance with the existing data.

“We want to maintain a serious outlook and continue to combat illegal fishing,” the president affirmed at the meeting, which was attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Marine and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Environment Indroyono Susilo, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasona H. UN agency says at least 74 children killed in Yemen fighting

SANAA — Saudi-led coalition jets bombed a military installation in southern Yemen Tuesday as local tribes battled with forces loyal to the Shiite rebels in the area, forcing them out and seizing their makeshift camp and weapons, military officials said. The fighting in Ibb comes as the U.N. children’s welfare agency warned that more than 100,000 people have fled their homes in different provinces in Yemen seeking safety from the violence. According to UNICEF, at least 74 children have also been killed since the fighting between Yemeni rivals intensified and the coalition airstrike campaign began two weeks ago.

A medical volunteer in the Maytam district in southern Ibb province said the airstrike on a Republican Guards camp left at least 25 military men wounded. The military unit is loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is allied with the Shiite rebels in their bid to grab power in Yemen.

Residents say the camp was close to a school. The rebel television station, known as al-Masirah, said three children were killed in the airstrike. The medical volunteer, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, could not verify the deaths. About 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the camp, local tribes battled with rebel fighters who had set up a makeshift camp in the area, driving the rebels away and seizing their weapons, a local resident said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.

Civilians have paid a heavy toll for the violence that mushroomed from an internal power struggle into a regional war drawing in neighboring Saudi Arabia and its allies. Children

have been especially vulnerable, said UNICEF’s Yemen representative, Julien Harneis.

“They are being killed, maimed and forced to flee their homes, their health threatened and their education interrupted,” Harneis said in a statement, released Monday in Amman, Jordan. Warring factions have also increased their recruitment of children under the age of 18. The agency said at least 74 children have been killed and 44 wounded since March 26, when the Saudi-led air campaign began.

Last week, the U.N. said more than 500 civilians have been killed in the last two weeks. Comprehensive casualty figures are difficult to collect and verify because of the ongoing violence. The fighting pits allies of the country’s embattled president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, against the rebels known as Houthis and their allies — military units loyal to Hadi’s predecessor, Saleh.

The Saudi-led military campaign, which supports Hadi, is in its 13th day, and has so far failed to stop the

Houthis advance on Aden — Yemen’s second-largest city, which was declared a provisional capital by Hadi before he fled the country.

Humanitarian groups say they are running out of supplies. They have called for a temporary halt to the fighting to allow medical teams and fresh medical supplies to arrive in the country and for residents to identify and bury their dead.

UNICEF said the violence has disrupted water supplies in areas of southern Yemen and that sewage is overflowing in some locations, raising the risk of disease outbreak. Water systems have been repeatedly damaged in Aden and two other areas, UNICEF said, adding that it is providing fuel for water pumps.

Hospitals are struggling to treat large numbers of wounded with insufficient supplies and some medical facilities have come under attack, the agency said. At least three health workers, including an ambulance driver, have been killed in attacks in Aden and another southern city. (ap)

Supporters commemorate Russian politician’s murder MOSCOW — Several hundred people gathered Tuesday just outside the Kremlin walls to commemorate 40 days since the killing of a Russian opposition politician that shook the country. Boris Nemtsov was shot dead late evening on Feb. 27 as he was walking just outside the Kremlin. It remains unclear who organized the attack.

The bridge where Nemtsov was gunned down was packed Tuesday morning with his supporters, who brought flowers and candles to the spot where he was killed. Passing cars were honking their horns at 11 a.m. local time (0800GMT), a designated moment of commemoration.

Some drivers put up pictures of Nemtsov in the windshield as they drove by. Tuesday marked the 40th day since the politician’s killing and is regarded as the final commemorative date in Orthodox Christian tradition.

Nemtsov’s killing triggered one of the largest opposition protests in years, with people blaming the Kremlin for fostering a climate of hatred in the country as President Vladimir Putin rallies his support base against what he describes the hostile West.

The politician’s close friend and ally, Ilya Yashin, argued Tuesday that Nemtsov’s killing was orchestrated in order to “instill fear into that dissenting segment of the society, that segment that does not support the president’s policies.” “We want to show that they will not make us scared,” Yashin told reporters on the bridge. “We want to show

that we will manage to turn Russia into the country that Nemtsov was fighting for, that he died for in the end and that he would not feel ashamed of.”

Five suspects, all from the predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya, have been detained.

Supporters of Nemtsov, however, believe that by casting blame on Islamic extremists, investigators are attempting to shift responsibility away from the government and onto a minority with a controversial reputation.

Chechnya suffered two intense wars over the past two decades between Russian forces and separatist rebels increasingly under the sway of fundamentalist Islam.

That has reinforced the stereotype among many Russians of Chechens as violent extremists.

The key suspect, Zaur Dadaev, told a court last week that he had been beaten and pressured to confess. Dadaev had been an officer in the Chechen police troops, supervised ultimately by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. Yashin told The Associated Press that investigators may have found the man who pulled the trigger but the mastermind is still on the loose.

“Those people directly responsible for organizing the murder are now in Chechnya under protection of Kadyrov and his militia,” Yashin said. “If the people who ordered the killing are not sent to prison, they will believe in their own impunity and their right to solve problems in any way they please.” (ap)

2004 Olympic hurdles champ Liu Xiang confirms retirement

BEIJING — Former Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang confirmed his retirement on Tuesday, citing age and injuries 2 1/2 years after his last race. The 31-year-old Liu wrote in a lengthy statement on his microblog titled “My Track, My Hurdle” that he was “truly unwell and old and can no longer run and jump with you.”

“Although it’s sad, although it’s painful, I really have no other choice,” Liu wrote. Liu became the first Chinese man to win Olympic gold in athletics at the 2004 Athens Games in the 110-meter hurdles, in a then-world record time. He set another world record in 2005, and won at the world championships in 2007.

The Shanghai native hasn’t competed since withdrawing at the London Olympics in 2012 after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

He pulled out of the 2008 Beijing Games with a similar injury, and years of treatment have apparently failed to fix the problem.

Given his experiences at the Beijing and London Games, Chinese sports officials said Liu would not return to competition before making a full recovery.

However, Achilles injuries are difficult to heal, and many sprinters never return to their previous best. In his statement, Liu said

he hoped to recover after London, but “my foot told me no again and again, and there was no way it was going to be able to handle intense training and competition.

“I hate my foot, I love my track and my hurdle so much, and if I hadn’t injured my foot ... but then there are no ‘ifs’ in this world, I injured myself, and can only accept it silently.”

Over his career, he became one of China’s highest-earning sports stars, joining the elite ranks of former NBA star Yao Ming and tennis champion Li Na. Liu’s plans to retire had been long expected, and were reported by a Shanghai newspaper last week.

Regarding his future, Liu, who began hurdling at age 13, said he planned to “begin a new journey” by completing his education, and hoped to contribute to Chinese sports development, and increase China’s international influence in the athletics world.

Liu had already announced he did not expect to compete at the world championships in Beijing in August, although he said he hoped to “take part in the event in another role.” Last month, he appeared at a promotional event for the competition but left without speaking to the media. (ap)

“Talking doesn’t do much,” point guard Russell Westbrook said after Sunday’s loss to Houston. “You’ve got to play. You’ve got to come out and play.”

The Thunder normally are a lock for the postseason, having reached the playoffs five straight years. They’ve played in the Western Conference Finals three of the past four years and the NBA Finals once, but injuries to reigning Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant (right foot surgery), forwards Serge Ibaka (right knee surgery) and Nick Collison (left ankle sprain) and shooting guard Andre Roberson (left ankle sprain) have taken their toll.

Westbrook has been the focus of the offense with so many players out injured. Since Durant’s last game on Feb. 19, Westbrook is averaging 30.6 points, 10.6 assists and 9.1 rebounds per game with nine triple-doubles. Despite heavy minutes — 40 per game in the past five — coach Scott Brooks isn’t worried about Westbrook slowing

down.

“He understands that the rest is important to come back with a full tank every night, and he has done that,” Brooks said. “He’s a special player, and he’s at a high level in that regard. He has the energy that can fill an entire arena, and he’s done a good job of recharging his batteries night in and night out.”

The Thunder have allowed 112 points per game and 52 percent shooting in their last three games, losing to Dallas, Memphis and Houston by a combined 15 points.

“I think our effort’s been there these last few games, but we just came up short in some departments down the stretch,” Thunder guard Anthony Morrow said. “We’ve just got to continue to work on those things.” The injury news isn’t getting much better. Durant has been declared out for the season, and Collison and Ibaka did not participate in practice on Monday.

Some good news has emerged for the Thunder in the second half

of the season. Turkish center Enes Kanter also has provided a spark, averaging 18.4 points and 11.6 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field in 21 games since being traded from the Utah Jazz.

Morrow has seen an increase in playing time and has taken advantage by making 18 of 31 3-pointers in his past five games. He is averaging 18 points and shooting 55 percent from the field during that stretch.

Still, the defense has been ragged, and Westbrook’s shooting percentage has dropped as he has logged more minutes. Morrow expects a difficult path to the playoffs ahead, starting with the defending NBA champion Spurs.

“It’s a challenge, and you have to accept the challenge,” he said. “We know what we are up against with the injuries and all that, we know how we are right now, but we just have to embrace it and just enjoy the joy of the challenge and embrace it every night.” (ap)

Sao Paulo coach Ramalho leaves club citing health reasons SAO PAULO — Sao Paulo coach Muricy Ramalho says he is leaving the struggling Brazilian club because of health reasons.

Ramalho met with Sao Paulo officials on Monday and announced he was leaving because he needs time “to take care of my health.”

The 59-year-old Ramalho reportedly has been nursing a stomach problem and also needs surgery to remove his gallbladder.

The announcement came a day after Sao Paulo lost 2-0 to Botafogo

in the Sao Paulo state championship, the latest disappointing result in recent weeks. Fans had already been calling for Ramalho’s dismissal.

Sao Paulo coach Ramalho leaves club citing health reasons SAO PAULO — Sao Paulo coach Muricy Ramalho says he is leaving the struggling Brazilian club because of health reasons.

Ramalho met with Sao Paulo officials on Monday and announced he was leaving because he needs time “to take care of my health.”

The 59-year-old Ramalho reportedly has been nursing a stomach problem and also needs surgery to remove his gallbladder.

The announcement came a day after Sao Paulo lost 2-0 to Botafogo

in the Sao Paulo state championship, the latest disappointing result in recent weeks. Fans had already been calling for Ramalho’s dismissal.

Despite having some of Brazil’s top squads, the six-time national champion is in danger of not advancing past the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.

2004 Olympic hurdles champ Liu Xiang confirms retirement

BEIJING — Former Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang confirmed his retirement on Tuesday, citing age and injuries 2 1/2 years after his last race. The 31-year-old Liu wrote in a lengthy statement on his microblog titled “My Track, My Hurdle” that he was “truly unwell and old and can no longer run and jump with you.”

“Although it’s sad, although it’s painful, I really have no other choice,” Liu wrote. Liu became the first Chinese man to win Olympic gold in athletics at the 2004 Athens Games in the 110-meter hurdles, in a then-world record time. He set another world record in 2005, and won at the world championships in 2007.

The Shanghai native hasn’t competed since withdrawing at the London Olympics in 2012 after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

He pulled out of the 2008 Beijing Games with a similar injury, and years of treatment have apparently failed to fix the problem.

Given his experiences at the Beijing and London Games, Chinese sports officials said Liu would not return to competition before making a full recovery.

However, Achilles injuries are difficult to heal, and many sprinters never return to their previous best. In his statement, Liu said

he hoped to recover after London, but “my foot told me no again and again, and there was no way it was going to be able to handle intense training and competition.

“I hate my foot, I love my track and my hurdle so much, and if I hadn’t injured my foot ... but then there are no ‘ifs’ in this world, I injured myself, and can only accept it silently.”

Over his career, he became one of China’s highest-earning sports stars, joining the elite ranks of former NBA star Yao Ming and tennis champion Li Na. Liu’s plans to retire had been long expected, and were reported by a Shanghai newspaper last week.

Regarding his future, Liu, who began hurdling at age 13, said he planned to “begin a new journey” by completing his education, and hoped to contribute to Chinese sports development, and increase China’s international influence in the athletics world.

Liu had already announced he did not expect to compete at the world championships in Beijing in August, although he said he hoped to “take part in the event in another role.” Last month, he appeared at a promotional event for the competition but left without speaking to the media. (ap)

“Talking doesn’t do much,” point guard Russell Westbrook said after Sunday’s loss to Houston. “You’ve got to play. You’ve got to come out and play.”

The Thunder normally are a lock for the postseason, having reached the playoffs five straight years. They’ve played in the Western Conference Finals three of the past four years and the NBA Finals once, but injuries to reigning Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant (right foot surgery), forwards Serge Ibaka (right knee surgery) and Nick Collison (left ankle sprain) and shooting guard Andre Roberson (left ankle sprain) have taken their toll.

Westbrook has been the focus of the offense with so many players out injured. Since Durant’s last game on Feb. 19, Westbrook is averaging 30.6 points, 10.6 assists and 9.1 rebounds per game with nine triple-doubles. Despite heavy minutes — 40 per game in the past five — coach Scott Brooks isn’t worried about Westbrook slowing

down.

“He understands that the rest is important to come back with a full tank every night, and he has done that,” Brooks said. “He’s a special player, and he’s at a high level in that regard. He has the energy that can fill an entire arena, and he’s done a good job of recharging his batteries night in and night out.”

The Thunder have allowed 112 points per game and 52 percent shooting in their last three games, losing to Dallas, Memphis and Houston by a combined 15 points.

“I think our effort’s been there these last few games, but we just came up short in some departments down the stretch,” Thunder guard Anthony Morrow said. “We’ve just got to continue to work on those things.” The injury news isn’t getting much better. Durant has been declared out for the season, and Collison and Ibaka did not participate in practice on Monday.

Some good news has emerged for the Thunder in the second half

of the season. Turkish center Enes Kanter also has provided a spark, averaging 18.4 points and 11.6 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field in 21 games since being traded from the Utah Jazz.

Morrow has seen an increase in playing time and has taken advantage by making 18 of 31 3-pointers in his past five games. He is averaging 18 points and shooting 55 percent from the field during that stretch.

Still, the defense has been ragged, and Westbrook’s shooting percentage has dropped as he has logged more minutes. Morrow expects a difficult path to the playoffs ahead, starting with the defending NBA champion Spurs.

“It’s a challenge, and you have to accept the challenge,” he said. “We know what we are up against with the injuries and all that, we know how we are right now, but we just have to embrace it and just enjoy the joy of the challenge and embrace it every night.” (ap)

UN agency says at least 74 children killed in Yemen fighting

SANAA — Saudi-led coalition jets bombed a military installation in southern Yemen Tuesday as local tribes battled with forces loyal to the Shiite rebels in the area, forcing them out and seizing their makeshift camp and weapons, military officials said. The fighting in Ibb comes as the U.N. children’s welfare agency warned that more than 100,000 people have fled their homes in different provinces in Yemen seeking safety from the violence. According to UNICEF, at least 74 children have also been killed since the fighting between Yemeni rivals intensified and the coalition airstrike campaign began two weeks ago.

A medical volunteer in the Maytam district in southern Ibb province said the airstrike on a Republican Guards camp left at least 25 military men wounded. The military unit is loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is allied with the Shiite rebels in their bid to grab power in Yemen.

Residents say the camp was close to a school. The rebel television station, known as al-Masirah, said three children were killed in the airstrike. The medical volunteer, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, could not verify the deaths. About 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the camp, local tribes battled with rebel fighters who had set up a makeshift camp in the area, driving the rebels away and seizing their weapons, a local resident said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.

Civilians have paid a heavy toll for the violence that mushroomed from an internal power struggle into a regional war drawing in neighboring Saudi Arabia and its allies. Children

have been especially vulnerable, said UNICEF’s Yemen representative, Julien Harneis.

“They are being killed, maimed and forced to flee their homes, their health threatened and their education interrupted,” Harneis said in a statement, released Monday in Amman, Jordan. Warring factions have also increased their recruitment of children under the age of 18. The agency said at least 74 children have been killed and 44 wounded since March 26, when the Saudi-led air campaign began.

Last week, the U.N. said more than 500 civilians have been killed in the last two weeks. Comprehensive casualty figures are difficult to collect and verify because of the ongoing violence. The fighting pits allies of the country’s embattled president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, against the rebels known as Houthis and their allies — military units loyal to Hadi’s predecessor, Saleh.

The Saudi-led military campaign, which supports Hadi, is in its 13th day, and has so far failed to stop the

Houthis advance on Aden — Yemen’s second-largest city, which was declared a provisional capital by Hadi before he fled the country.

Humanitarian groups say they are running out of supplies. They have called for a temporary halt to the fighting to allow medical teams and fresh medical supplies to arrive in the country and for residents to identify and bury their dead.

UNICEF said the violence has disrupted water supplies in areas of southern Yemen and that sewage is overflowing in some locations, raising the risk of disease outbreak. Water systems have been repeatedly damaged in Aden and two other areas, UNICEF said, adding that it is providing fuel for water pumps.

Hospitals are struggling to treat large numbers of wounded with insufficient supplies and some medical facilities have come under attack, the agency said. At least three health workers, including an ambulance driver, have been killed in attacks in Aden and another southern city. (ap)

Supporters commemorate Russian politician’s murder MOSCOW — Several hundred people gathered Tuesday just outside the Kremlin walls to commemorate 40 days since the killing of a Russian opposition politician that shook the country. Boris Nemtsov was shot dead late evening on Feb. 27 as he was walking just outside the Kremlin. It remains unclear who organized the attack.

The bridge where Nemtsov was gunned down was packed Tuesday morning with his supporters, who brought flowers and candles to the spot where he was killed. Passing cars were honking their horns at 11 a.m. local time (0800GMT), a designated moment of commemoration.

Some drivers put up pictures of Nemtsov in the windshield as they drove by. Tuesday marked the 40th day since the politician’s killing and is regarded as the final commemorative date in Orthodox Christian tradition.

Nemtsov’s killing triggered one of the largest opposition protests in years, with people blaming the Kremlin for fostering a climate of hatred in the country as President Vladimir Putin rallies his support base against what he describes the hostile West.

The politician’s close friend and ally, Ilya Yashin, argued Tuesday that Nemtsov’s killing was orchestrated in order to “instill fear into that dissenting segment of the society, that segment that does not support the president’s policies.” “We want to show that they will not make us scared,” Yashin told reporters on the bridge. “We want to show

that we will manage to turn Russia into the country that Nemtsov was fighting for, that he died for in the end and that he would not feel ashamed of.”

Five suspects, all from the predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya, have been detained.

Supporters of Nemtsov, however, believe that by casting blame on Islamic extremists, investigators are attempting to shift responsibility away from the government and onto a minority with a controversial reputation.

Chechnya suffered two intense wars over the past two decades between Russian forces and separatist rebels increasingly under the sway of fundamentalist Islam.

That has reinforced the stereotype among many Russians of Chechens as violent extremists.

The key suspect, Zaur Dadaev, told a court last week that he had been beaten and pressured to confess. Dadaev had been an officer in the Chechen police troops, supervised ultimately by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. Yashin told The Associated Press that investigators may have found the man who pulled the trigger but the mastermind is still on the loose.

While annual inflation has continued to rise to levels last seen in 2002, month-on-month inflation has slowed so far this year to 1.2 percent in March, down from 2.2 percent in February and 3.9 percent in January.

Inflation of food prices remained above the overall rate of inflation, with 23 percent growth year-onyear in March and 1.6 percent against February’s prices. Russia’s government has banned food imports from the European Union and

other Western countries since August in response to sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Russia’s central bank expects the country’s gross domestic product to contract by between 3.5 and 4 percent this year. (ap)

SEOUL - Samsung Electronics flagged Tuesday better-thanexpected profits for the first quarter, with rising demand for memory chips helping offset slumping smartphone sales.

The South Korean electronics giant -- the world’s top mobile producer -- estimated an operating profit of 5.9 trillion won ($5.4 billion) for the January-March period.

The forecast was down 30.5 percent from a year ago, but beat average analyst expectations of around 5.5 trillion won, and was up 11.5 percent from the previous quarter.

Sales would likely reach 47 trillion won, down 12.4 percent from a year ago, Samsung said in its quarterly earnings estimate, which came days ahead of the much-anticipated launch of its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6.

Samsung hopes the new model will re-establish it as the clear global smartphone market leader over arch-rival Apple, which has enjoyed booming sales of its iPhone 6.

Several market trackers had Apple and Samsung tied in worldwide smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2014, while at least one suggested Apple had regained the throne it lost to Samsung back in 2011.

Samsung has seen profits sag since late 2013 due to heightened competition in the increasingly saturated smartphone market.

It has faced a double challenge from Apple in the high-end market and rising Chinese firms like Xiaomi and Lenovo in the mid- and low-end market.

The European currency has fallen 10 percent against the dollar this year. In theory, car dealer-

ships, department stores and other companies that sell goods from Europe could pass on the savings to their American customers, said Ira Kalish, chief global economist at Deloitte, the consulting and accounting firm.

“But what would be the point of doing that?” Kalish asked. Demand for anything made in Europe is so strong that they have little trouble

moving merchandise. “From their perspective, it’s better to leave the price unchanged and pocket the profit.”

The euro has been in a long tailspin. Last April, it was trading just shy of $1.40. Since then, it sank as low as $1.04 in March before bouncing back to $1.10 on Monday.

In other words, you used to have to pay $1.40 to buy a single euro;

today, you pay just $1.10.

So where are the bargains?

There’s no reason to think that prices for Italian shoes and French red wines will fall along with the euro, analysts said. Part of the reason is that most European consumer products sold in the U.S. aren’t aimed at most consumers.

Russia inflation hits 16.9 percent in March

MOSCOW — Russia’s consumer price inflation hit 16.9 percent in March as the country heads for recession, the state statistics agency Rosstat said Monday.

Tuesday’s estimate, which comes ahead of audited results to be released later in the month, did not provide a net income figure.

It also gave no breakdown of divisional earnings, but analysts attributed the better-than-expected performance to profits from highmargin chip sales, which helped cushion the downturn in its overgrown mobile sector.

The company -- which produces a range of electronics products from chips to household appliances -- saw profits in its semiconductor division jump 35.7 percent on-year in the fourth quarter.

The firm’s newly upgraded chipmaking plants also helped cut production costs, Song MyungSup, analyst at HI Investment & Securities.

“Sales hovered below analysts’ expectation but profits rose, meaning the firm boosted profit by spending less rather than selling more,” Song said.

Blocking of alleged radical websites should be selective

SEMARANG - Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin has emphasized that any effort to block alleged radical websites should be carried out selectively.

Of the 19 websites recently blocked by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics at the request of the Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), in fact, not all of them were promoting radical ideology, and therefore, some of them lodged protests, the minister noted on Monday.

They protested because they have, so far, normally preached Islamic teachings to Indonesian Muslims, he remarked.

He stated that the freedom of expression should be respected.

“Therefore, we are grateful that the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has improved the blocking mechanism,” he affirmed.

Before deciding to block a website, the authorities must focus on two areas, according to Lukman.

First, the authorities must ensure whether the content is against the state ideology, and second, whether the procedure does not violate the law, he noted.

On March 29, 2015, the ministry blocked at least 19 websites, at the request of the BNPT in its letter number 149/K.BNPT/3/2015, stat-

ing that the online media sites promoted radical ideologies and were sympathizers of radicalism.

“We asked Internet service providers to block the websites this morning at the request of the BNPT. The agency analyzed the sites and found them spreading radicalism.

So, we blocked them after we received a request,” a spokesman for the ministry, Ismail Cawidu, stated on March 30, 2015.

The sites are arrahmah.com, voa-islam.com, ghur4ba.blogspot. com, panjimas.com, thoriquna. com, dakwatuna.com, kafilahmujahid.com, an-najah.net, muslimdaily.net, hidayatullah.com, salamonline.com, aqlislamiccenter.com, kiblat.net, dakwahmedia.com, muqawamah.com, lasdipo.com, gemaislam.com, eramuslim.com, and daulahislam.com.

The Indonesian police claimed that they had appealed to the BNPT to block the websites. The BNPT then put forth the suggestion to the Ministry of Communication and Informatics that later blocked the sites.

“We only made an appeal, following which the BNPT suggested it (the blocking) to the Communication and Informatics Ministry,” spokesman for the National Police (Polri) Brig. Gen. Anton Charliyan remarked at the Police Headquarters on April 1, 2015. (ant)

Badrodin Haiti’s bid revealed at House’s plenary session

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo’s letter bearing the nomination of Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as Indonesia’s new national police chief was read during the House of Representatives’ (DPR’s) plenary session on Tuesday.

“One of the agenda items of the House’s plenary meeting is reading President Joko Widodo’s letter. We shall also listen to the Supreme Audit Agency’s (BPK’s) report,” House Speaker Setya Novanto remarked.

The House’s plenary meeting was held a day after President Joko Widodo presided over a consultative meeting with the House leaders, including Setya Novanto, for talks about Badrodin Haiti’s nomination as the

country’s police chief and the 2015 revised state budget on Monday.

According to DPR Deputy Chairman Agus Hermanto, the president and lawmakers would not intervene in the decisionmaking process regarding the appointment of the figure to fill the deputy police chief’s post.

The final decision about that matter would be disclosed to the police institution, he noted.

din Haiti has become the country’s acting police chief to replace General Sutarman, whose term as national police chief was cut short prior to his official retirement in October 2015 by President Joko Widodo on January 16, 2015.

President held limited meeting on illegal fishing

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a limited meeting at his office on Tuesday to discuss illegal fishing, including sustainable ways to address the issue.

“We are going to discuss illegal fishing and the achievements we have made in the area of law enforcement against it,” President Jokowi remarked while opening the meeting.

Besides law enforcement against illegal fishing, the president also sought cooperation among relevant institutions to ensure the successful handling of fish theft and smuggling.

He stated that the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry should coordinate with the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (INTRAC) to uncover data about illegal fishing and to take action in accordance with the existing data.

“We want to maintain a serious outlook and continue to combat illegal fishing,” the president affirmed at the meeting, which was attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Marine and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Environment Indroyono Susilo, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasona H. Harvest season arrives, farmers complain as grain unsold

TABANAN - Rice of some regions such as Kerambitan and Kediri is ready to be harvested.

Unfortunately, amid the harvest season and the increase in grain basic purchasing price (HPP), according to Head of Tabanan Agriculture, Foodstuffs, and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana, there are still problems experienced by farmers where their grain has not been sold.

Budana revealed his party gets a complaint from some subak leaders regarding the fate of farmers because so far their grains have not been purchased. “Therefore, we will check it first to Perpadi,” he said. He continued that Perpadi has an obligation to buy the grain of farmers in the region in accordance with the basic purchasing price (HPP) set by the government.

The increase in basic purchasing price at IDR 3,700 at farmer level and IDR 3,750 at milling plant level has been disseminated to farmers.

Budana expected the Perpadi or harvesters not to purchase the grain of farmers under the basic purchasing price. If there is a purchasing price less than the basic price, there will be sanction imposed to Perpadi especially in the case of allocation of the rural economic venture agency (LUEP) fund. “If Perpadi purchases grain under the basic purchasing price, it can have an impact on the termination of LUEP fund they receive in the coming years,” said Budana. He also appealed if there are people purchasing grain from farm-

ers under the basic purchasing price set by the government, they can be reported to the Agriculture Agency to be tackled immediately.

Though the increase in the basic price of grain itself was disseminated, it has not been evenly distributed. As evidence, some farmers in Tabanan do not know if there is an increase in the basic purchasing price of grain. The leader of Subak Timan Agung, Dewa Putu Suara, admitted that he does not know about the increase in the basic purchasing price of dry grain. At his subak area,

harvest has not been carried out by the entire area.

“There has been harvester purchasing the grain. Every 100 square meters of paddy is valued at IDR 200,000 to IDR 225,000 depending on the quality of rice. In our subak area, some farmers sell their grains, while some others do not because they keep it for self-consumption.

So far, we do not get the selling price of dry grain whether there is a price increase,” he explained.

According to the Chairman of the National Farmers Contact (KTNA) of Tabanan, Nengah Mawan, the basic purchasing price of grain at IDR 3,700 at farmer level has great potential to be sold below the basic price in line with the harvest season.

“Today, it is still traded in accordance with the basic purchasing price.

Possibly, the price will go down as the peak of harvest occurs late April,” he said. He explained the opportunities for the declining price of grain at farmer level is quite large because the increasing production from normal condition will result in the suppression to the selling price in the market.

Moreover, the current price of grain at farmer level has touched the limit of the basic purchasing price so that it will likely move down.

“If this happens it needs to make coordination with local government to address the problem so that the income of farmers can meet their expectation in the middle of current harvest season,” he said. (kmb24)

Urban park in Gianyar overrun by vendors

GIANYAR - Random peddling by street vendors in Ciung Wanara urban park every afternoon, seems to become a common practice.

In fact the number of vendors is steadily increasing and sat rating to disturb traffic in the area as well as damage the park itself.

Initially, there were only three people selling their goods around

Ciung Wanara park.

However, due to negligence in enforcing regulations more and more vendors have set up shop there, resulting in a chaotic and crammed atmosphere in a place that was meant to be relaxing. Chief of the Gianyar Municipal Police, Gede Daging, confirmed on Monday (Apr. 6) that the police are aware

of the situation and explained that despite having already made arrests, many stubborn vendors have simply returned to the park. “We are going to intensify our actions,” he said.

The merchants sell their wares in the park staring in the evening and into the night, and although police officers have been monitoring the

situation, the last few days have called the officers to other matters so the park was left unsupervised.

Daging said that in order to keep an eye out for rogue street vendors around the Ciung Wanara urban park, municipal police officers bring their own chairs to sit wait for the vendors to arrive at which point the officers step in.

In the future, along with other renovations vent made to the park, two police posts will be set up so that officers can oversea activities in the park assuring that it remains beautiful and comfortable without the disturbance of street vendors.

Opposition strike shuts down Nepal; protesters, police clash

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Opposition protesters clashed with police and set vehicles on fire in Nepal’s capital on Tuesday, as they enforced a nationwide general strike that crippled life throughout the country.

The alliance of 30 opposition parties is demanding the Himalayan nation’s new constitution draft be passed by a national consensus. The ruling coalition has been attempting to get the draft approved through a vote in parliament after negotiations with the opposition failed.

Protesters and police clashed in Kathmandu, the capital, on the first day of the three-day strike. Riot police fired tear gas shells, while

the protesters retaliated by throwing stones. The demonstrators also set a taxi and a motorcycle on fire.

Taxi driver Niraj Vaidya told reporters that the protesters poured gasoline on his taxi and set it on fire while he was still inside the vehicle.

He was able to escape, but said he lost his taxi in the fire.

General strikes are a common tactic for the opposition in Nepal, and it is common for protesters to attack vehicles, shops and businesses that defy the calls to strike.

Schools were closed and markets shuttered across the country. Highways were deserted, with protesters allowing only emergency vehicles on the roads. (ap)

TEHRAN — Iran’s official news agency says about 200 hardliners staged a protest against the framework deal struck last week between Iran and the six world powers on limits on Tehran’s nuclear program.

IRNA says Tuesday’s gathering took place in front of the parliament in the Iranian capital without prior permission from authorities.

The rally coincided with a closed session of parliament during which Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad

Zarif appeared before lawmakers to explain the framework agreement.

The deal, to be finalized by June 30, has been overwhelmingly backed by Iran’s establishment, including President Hassan Rouhani but Iranian hard-liners have denounced it as a disaster for Iran.

The deal is to curb Iran’s bombcapable technology while giving Tehran quick access to bank accounts, oil markets and financial assets blocked by international sanctions. (ap)

The Prevention of Terrorism Act bill was passed by Parliament’s lower house in the wee hours of the morning after hours of debate, with 79 votes in favor and 60 against.

The law allows authorities to detain suspects indefinitely without trial, with no court challenges permitted.

The government said the measure was needed because dozens of Malaysians have been arrested since 2013 for suspected links to the Islamic State group. Authorities on Sunday arrested 17 people, including an Indonesian militant, accused of planning to rob banks and attack police stations and army camps to obtain weapons.

Critics said the new law was a revival of the Internal Security Act, which was repealed in 2012. New

York-based Human Rights Watch called it a “giant step backwards for human rights” in Malaysia, and said it raised concerns that the government will once again use the law to intimidate and silence vocal critics.

“By restoring indefinite detention without trial, Malaysia has re-opened Pandora’s Box for politically motivated, abusive state actions that many had thought was closed when the abusive Internal Security Act was revoked in 2012,” the group’s deputy Asia director, Phil Robertson, said in a statement.

Home Minister Zahid Hamidi, however, said the new law was crucial to curb the rise of Islamic militants. “This is a real threat, and prevention measures are needed,”

he said during the debate. It will take weeks before the bill becomes law, as it needs approval from the upper house and royal assent by the king, but those are considered formalities.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said the 17 people, aged from 14 to 49, were arrested during a secret meeting Sunday to plot attacks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s biggest city, and in the administrative capital of Putrajaya.

The group was planning to kidnap several high-profile individuals, rob banks for money, raid police stations and army camps for weapons, and procure more firearms from another terror group in a neighboring country, Khalid said in a statement Tuesday. (ap)

PALO ALTO - The world has only touched the surface of technological progress and computers may soon be able to transmit the complexities of human personalities, a prominent inventor says.

Sebastian Thrun, who founded the Google X laboratory where the Internet search giant has developed Google Glass and driverless cars, said it was often difficult to grasp concepts before they come to fruition.

But he said that, much like data is now routinely transmitted via computers, the same may soon be true for full personalities.

“Perhaps we can get to the point where we can outsource our own personal experiences entirely into a computer -- and possibly our own personality. Maybe we’re going to have a demo at some point where the computer runs ‘Sebastian,’” he told a symposium Thursday evening at Stanford University.

“It’s maybe unimaginable but it’s not as far off as people think.

It’s very doable,” said the Germanborn computer scientist, who remains a fellow at Google.

“I do believe that in all these technologies we have just scratched the surface. Almost everything interesting hasn’t been invented yet,” he said.

The party and the Parliament, which already approved Budi’s candidacy, had insisted that the president should install the three-star police general as new police chief.

Budi is known to be close to Megawati as her former bodyguard during her tenure as president.

Leo said a meeting between Jokowi, Megawati, and other party leaders at the congress could be an important moment to knit synergy for the best interest of the party.

42 Indonesian citizens evacuated from Yemen transit in Bali

KUTA - A total of 42 Indonesian citizens from restive Yemen arrived at Ngurah Rai airport in Bali for transit before continuing their journey to their own regions.

On Monday the citizens left Yemen through Doha by Qatar Airlines with flight number QR-962 and arrived in Bali at about 5.09 p.m. local time.

The Indonesian citizens who consist of men, women and children, then left the Ngurah Rai airport at 8.00 p.m. local time after dealing with Immigration and conducted their daily prayer.

According to the Evacuation Coordinator of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Gatot Abdullah Mansour, majority of the citizens who arrived from the conflict-torn country are students and their families who come from three areas in the country.

In the meantime, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi said in Jakarta that as many as 89 Indonesians are still in Aden, Yemen, and cannot be evacuated yet due to unfavorable conditions.

“We are concerned about our citizens in Aden because they cannot be taken out of the city to a nearby seaport yet,” she stated at a press briefing here on Monday.

The minister added that the Indonesian Evacuation Task Force had provided a ship to evacuate the citizens near the seaport, but a change in circumstances resulted in them failing to reach the location.

As part of efforts to evacuate the citizens in Yemen, Marsudi has discussed the situation with some parties, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Saudi Arabian Minister of Defense. (ant)

SINGARAJA - The lack of attention to existing drainage infrastructure in the Lovina tourist area, means that there is flooding every time it rains hard, causing residents and tourist alike to complain.

As the heart of tourism in North Bali, Lovina should receive special attention from relevant agencies in addressing the drainage problems there.

The impact of neglect is made clear when even a few hours of rain consistently causes flooding in certain areas. Flooding recently occurred at a five-way intersection in Lovina, near Binaria Beach, but the most severe flooding happened at the intersection Kalibukbuk and Anturan where flood water inundated the streets and caused sever traffic jams.

Made Tama, a motorist from Gerokgak, was forced to push his motorcycle when its motor died from being submerged in the murky water. All he could do was hope that the government would do take action to help prevent future flooding in the Lovina area. “My motorcycle suddenly broke down after being submerged in the flood water. I expect the government to ensure that drainage systems in Lovina function properly,” he said.

Made Mangku Ariawan, acknowledged improvements must be made to a number of the drains at intersection in Lovina so as to prevent such flooding during the rainy season. The Public Works Agency was urged make immediate repairs to the tourist area of Lovina’s drainage systems.

DENPASAR - Police in cooperation with immigration officials, are still working to identify the 39 people from China and Taiman involved in an international fraud syndicate. The Bali Immigration Office have processes three suspects.

The remaining suspects are being held at Villa Wayan on Jalan Sekar Sari Gang Nusa Indah No. 12, East Denpasar.

Since the immigration office does not have sufficient space to accommodate them, they are temporarily being held at the villa and are heavily guarded by police. “The letter of handover has been issued,” said spokesperson for the Bali Police Heri Wiyantoto.

Police are also investigating their involvement in the beatings that occurred at Vila Kasa Bumbak on Jalan Bumbak Dauh, North Kuta.

“The Criminal Investigation Unit is still coordinating with relevant parties to uncover their identities.

Our personnel are still checking into the matter,” said the Chief of Badung Police, Tony Binsar.

The police have yet to receive any reports regarding their involvement in the case of the beatings. “If any evidence emerges, we will surely process it. We are still awaiting the results of the investigation,” he said.

As Spokesman for Bali Police, stated, evidence is required to determine one’s involvement in a case.

“Evidence is still being sought. If the suspects are not found to have violated any Indonesian crimes, they will be returned to their home country.

If they are found to be involved in such violations, we will coordinate with the immigration office and the case will be processed here (Bali— Ed),” he said.

Meanwhile, the villa owner, Dewa Putu Sudarsana, 45, said that he suspects that the culprits of the beatings are among the captives being held at the villa. He already reported his suspicions to Immigration Supervision and Enforcement of Class I Denpasar. “Allegedly one of the culprits secured here (Immigration Supervision and Enforcement—Ed) was involved. Having seen photos of the offenders that are being held on Jalan Sekar Sari, I am confident that some of them were involved in the

beatings. I am still coordinating with police and immigration,” he said.

Immigration Division Head of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights of Bali Province, T. Sabaru, accompanied by the Head of Information and Immigration Communications, Saroha Manulang, confirmed that they are waiting from word from the police as these departments will not take action before the police process is complete. “In principle, they are clearly foreigners which means that part of the task of processing them lies within the authority of the Immigration Office. We have only received three people so far, while the remaining people are still being handled by the police,” he said.

The three people are being examined related to their presence in Bali and undergoing interrogation regarding their travel documents, residence permits and their activities in Bali.

“We are still in the process of enquiry, one of them, a Taiwanese citizen, remains silent,” said Sabaru.

Only 32 of the 39 suspects’ passports have been secured. Their date of arrival is not the same though they all received a Visa on Arrival.

“Allegedly they are broke the law by doing non-travel related activities while holding this visa,” he said.

As for the alleged offenders who are not carrying passports, Sabaru asserted that any foreigner coming into Indonesia must have a passport.

If they do not show their passport, possibly it is hidden, dumped or deposited. If they really do not hold a passport at all they will have to contact their respective governments. “The examination is meant to identify the purpose of their visit to Bali. Each residence permit has a specified purpose of visit, such as working, investment, travel, running a business and social visit. If they have committed violations, sanctions will be imposed,” he added.

As previsouly reported, a joint team involving Chinese Police, Indonesian Police Headquarters, Bali Police, Denpasar Police and East Denpasar Police raided Villa Wayan on Saturday (Apr. 4). The officers arrested 38 people at the villa and another was arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban. They were allegedly involved in cases of fraud and blackmail. (kmb36)

Begawan Foundation received THK Nugraha

DENPASAR - The Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana - harmony among fellow human beings, harmony towards God, and harmony with the environment, all of which if really adhered to are the mainstays of life, forms the basis of an award given annually to a small variety of institutions here in Bali.

Begawan Foundation, on April 1st, was the proud recipient of a Tri Hita Karana Nugraha Awards for 2015. The award, containing universal values whose concept and implementation does not discriminate in terms of ethnic group, race, ancestry and religion, was given by a selection committee, led by Bali Travel News (BTN).

There were only eight recipients, mostly tourism oriented.

Begawan Foundation are pleased to be acknowledged by the Balinese themselves for the work undertaken over the past 16 years by Bradley and Debbie, who were referred to as ‘pioneers’ in the work of saving the Bali Starling.

Learn to swim with an Olympian

From her first holiday to Bali over three years ago, Luisa Striani developed a love affair with the island and, after subsequent biannual treks back to Bali for longer each time, she decided to move here permanently in July 2014.

“I love the culture, the food, the people, the way of life and the energy it gives you!”

From Montesarchio, a small city in the province of Benevento, Southern Italy, it was clear Luisa was to follow a career that kept her feet wet! Finishing school in 1996 she went on to hold a position on the Italian National Swim Team from 1997 to 2004, earning multiple bronze and silver medals in numerous world championships with a career highlight as finalist for Italy in the Sydney 2000 Olympics! She holds national records for freestyle and is ten times Italian champion for Freestyle and Butterfly.

Now as if that’s not enough in achievements or accolades, Luisa has

also graduated from Naples University with first class honours in Motor Sciences, has been awarded “Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana” from the Italian president (my Italian is hopeless but from what I can gather, it’s a very prestigious award!) and is an accredited senior coach with the Italian Swimming Federation. Judging from that long list of credentials I am pretty confident my kids are in safe and very qualified hands.

Fortuitously, several months ago, The Canggu Club was in the market for an internationally qualified coach and I would guarantee that Luisa more than fit the bill. She teaches swim classes from 3 month olds and school age through to adults and also offers one on one tuition for those wishing to hone their skills in the water. Her classes focus on developing the correct technique but for the kids there is also a need to

Begawan Foundation adopted a professional approach to the project of breeding and conservation of the Bali Starling, and between 1999 and 2005, the Foundation’s captive population grew from four to 97 birds.

Releases of Bali Starlings in 2006, 2007, 2012 and 2014 show that Begawan Foundation has kept to its goal of bringing back the Bali Starling from the edge of extinction. If there are hindrances and obstacles, solutions are found and the programme goes forward. The most recent releases by Dr Jane Goodall in June 2014 and Ban Ki Moon in August 2014 at Sibang are a vindication that the foundation is on the right track, and that its goals are achievable.

A not-for-profit organization, Begawan Foundation relies on donations to assist its important work. Funding to support and expand existing programs, monitor and engage local communities and schools in conservation and preservation of the environment, along with developing and maintaining its breeding site in Sibang Kaja is always welcome.

Luisa enjoys teaching at The Canggu Club because it is a melting pot of nationalities. Despite the obvious obstacles language barriers can create, she feels she can transmit her love for the water and passion for swimming.

“It’s like a universal language!” Judging from the fun my kids seem to be having in the pool, I’d say they are definitely feeling the love.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Blues legend B.B. King hospitalized

LOS ANGELES - American blues legend B.B. King has Hall of Fame, and has been been hospitalised, The Los Angeles Times reported Monday, ranked among the greatest guitar citing representatives for the singer but giving no details about players of all time.

NEW YORK — Giuliana Rancic isn’t making any promises that she’ll return to “Fashion Police” in the fall.

The E! Entertainment personality appeared on the “Today” show Monday to promote her new book, “Going off Script.”

And she also seemed to go off-script at the interview’s conclusion, when host Savannah Guthrie asked if Rancic “will be there” when “Fashion Police” airs again in September.

Hedging, Rancic said only, “We’ll see.”

The show, formerly hosted by the late Joan Rivers, has recently been in turmoil with the abrupt departures of panelist Kelly Osbourne and new host Kathy Griffin.

Before that, Rancic took heat for a wisecrack about actress Zendaya’s dreadlocks that some viewers, including the actress-singer, deemed racist.

But Rancic repeated her explanation that the joke was misinterpreted after editing removed the context. (ap)

Daniel Craig has knee surgery during break on Bond filming

LONDON — James Bond may be indestructible, but the actors who play 007 are not. Daniel Craig has had arthroscopic knee surgery in between filming the latest Bond flick “Spectre.”

Producers say he underwent a “minor

procedure” during the Easter production break. He is believed to have suffered the injury while filming action scenes for “Spectre” in Mexico.

Eon Productions said Monday Craig will rejoin the production when it resumes

filming at the famed Pinewood Studios in England on April 22. Craig is making his fourth appearance as the suave secret agent. He follows Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and others in the role. (ap)

Bali drafts 15 years tourism development masterplan

DENPASAR - Given the significant role and far reaching effects that tourism plays on the island, the government of Bali has begun drafting a master plan for the development of tourism over the next 15 years. Tourism has become the main thread that weaves together life in Bali but these threads have become quite tangled. The plan to untangle these knots is outlined in the Draft of a Regional Bylaw concerning the masterplan for regional tourism development for the Province of Bali between 2014 and 2029.

According to Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, the regional bylaw draft referred to as the Bali Tourism Development Masterplan 2014-2029 is mandated by Law No.10/2009 on tourism, wherein each province and county must have a regional tourism development masterplan.

In essence, the drafted plan addresses issues related to human resource management, tourism destination development, marketing and other aspects of tourism. “The regional bylaw draft is important so that there is a clear direction for tourism development in Bali,” said Pastika.

He added that part of the future tourism development plan, includes maintaining the uniqueness of Bali, including local customs and culture to avoid them being eroded. He insists that investments in tourism should be done selectively and carefully filtered so as not to damage the customs, culture nor the environment.

“Investments in tourism development must not damage the environment, customs or culture of Bali.

They should be based on the Tri Hita Karana concept although it is not easy,” said Pastika.

Deputy Chairman of the Bali House, Nyoman Sugawa Korry, said that a strategic tourism development plan for Bali is indeed required for the long term so that clear directives and rules can prevent sporadic, temporary and haphazard development. “Tourism is important as the principle economy of Bali, so we should arrange for, plan and provide support with appropriate regulations and regulatory bodies,” he said.

He added that there are a few important points that should be addressed in the regional bylaw draft of the Bali Tour-

ism Development Masterplan 20142029. For example, tourism supporting infrastructure such as roads, diversification of tourism products, objects or tourist destinations and human resources. “Most importantly, there must be a variety of tourism products and proper landscaping.

Also, these should not be jumbled into South Bali. The development of future tourism should be focused on East and North Bali and must be supported by adequate infrastructure,” added Sugawa Korry.

In connection to the recent tourist visa exemptions for a number of countries such as Japan, China, Russia and South Korea, Sugawa Korry believes that there will be a surge in tourists arriving from these countries. Our human resources should anticipate this and be ready to face the situation, tour guides who can speak the languages of these countries in particular should be made available. “We have to prepare and add the number of tour guide who can speak Korean, Russian, Japanese and Chinese in order to optimize the services extended to these travelers,” he concluded.
