LOS ANGELES - “Black Panther,” the first black standalone Marvel superhero movie, won rave reviews on Tuesday with critics praising both its adventure and its portrayal of a majestic Africa. Directed by Ryan Coogler and featuring a predominantly black cast including Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong‘o and Angela Bassett, “Black Panther” was hailed by the Daily Beast as “a love letter to every black person” and “a correction for years of diversity neglect” by Rolling Stone. The Disney movie, opening worldwide next week, tells the story of T‘Challa, the newly crowned king of the fictional, technologically advanced African nation Wakanda, who is challenged from factions within his own country.

The movie arrives after years of criticism about the under representation of actors and filmmakers of color in Hollywood, including the #OscarsSoWhite campaign that prompted the Academy of Motion Pictures to increase diversity in its predominantly while, male membership. It got a rare 100 percent rating from review aggregator RottenTomatoes.com and analysts REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni expect it to bring in some $150 million at the Cast member Lupita Nyong’o poses for a portrait while promoting the movie North American box office on its opening “Black Panther” in Beverly Hills, California, U.S., January 30, 2018. Tarantino says Thurman movie car crash among ‘biggest regrets’

Director Quentin Tarantino (L) and actress Uma Thurman pose on the red carpet they arrive for the screening of the film “Sils Maria” (Clouds of Sils Maria) in competition at the 67th Cannes Film Festival in Cannes May 23, 2014.

LOS ANGELES - Director Quentin Tarantino said a car crash that seriously injured Uma Thurman on the set of “Kill Bill” was one of “the biggest regrets of his life,” but denied that he forced the actress to carry it out. Thurman, who appeared in three Tarantino movies, told the New York Times in a Saturday article that she felt Tarantino had tried to kill her in the 2003 crash, which crushed her knees and left her with a concussion. Thurman also released video of the crash from the set of the martial arts movie, leading to harsh criticism of Tarantino on social and mainstream media. Tarantino, responding in an interview with Hollywood web-

site Deadline.com on Monday, said Thurman’s car crashed because there was an unseen curve in the road. “Watching her fight for the wheel. ... remembering me hammering about how it was safe and she could do it. Emphasizing that it was a straight road, a straight road. ... the fact that she believed me, and I literally watched this little S curve pop up. And it spins her like a top,” Tarantino said. “It was heartbreaking. Beyond one of the biggest regrets of my career, it is one of the biggest regrets of my life,” he added. Tarantino denied ignoring Thurman’s anxiety about driving but acknowledged he had been mistaken

about the safety of the road. “I didn’t force her into the car. She got into it because she trusted me,” he said. Tarantino said he and Thurman reconciled years ago and had talked since the New York Times story was published. “Uma was in turmoil about the uprising against me this weekend. ... She never meant this to roll over onto me,” he told Deadline. The Oscar-winning director also said that incidents when he spat on Thurman and choked her with a chain were part of the filming process for “Kill Bill” and were carried out with her consent to make the scenes realistic. Rescue workers are seen by a damaged building after an earthquake hit Hualien, Taiwan February 7, 2018.

At least five killed, 60 missing after quake rocks Taiwan tourist area

HUALIEN - Rescuers combed through the rubble of collapsed buildings on Wednesday, as they searched for about 60 people missing after a strong earthquake killed at least five near the popular Taiwanese tourist city of Hualien overnight. The magnitude 6.4 quake, which hit near the coastal city just before midnight (1600 GMT) on Tuesday, also injured 243 people and collapsed four buildings, officials said. Hualien Mayor Fu Kun-chi said the number of people missing was now close to 60, although an exact figure was not provided. As many as 150 were initially feared missing. Many of the missing were believed to be still trapped inside buildings, some of which were tilting precariously, after the quake hit about 22 km (14 miles) northeast of Hualien on Taiwan’s east coast. At the city’s Marshal Hotel, rescuers trying to free two trapped Taiwanese pulled out one alive, but the other person was declared dead, the government said. Among the injured were mainland Chinese, Czech, Japanese, Singaporean and South Korean

nationals.Aftershocks with a magnitude of at least 5.0 could rock the island in the next two weeks, the government said. Smaller tremors rattled nervous residents throughout the day. Residents waited and watched anxiously as emergency workers dressed in fluorescent orange and red suits and wearing helmets searched for residents trapped in apartment blocks. Hualien is home to about 100,000 people. Its streets were buckled by the force of the quake, with around 40,000 homes left without water and around 1,900 without power. Water supply had returned to nearly 5,000 homes by noon (0400 GMT), while

power was restored to around 1,700 households. DAMAGE, PANIC Emergency workers surrounded a badly damaged 12-storey residential building, a major focus of the rescue effort. Windows had collapsed and the building, which is around 17 years old, was wedged into the ground at a roughly 40degree angle. Rescuers worked their way around and through the building while residents looked on from behind cordoned-off roads. Others spoke of the panic when the earthquake struck. “We were still open when it happened,” said Lin Ching-wen, who

operates a restaurant near a damaged military hospital. “I grabbed my wife and children and we ran out and tried to rescue people,” he said. A Reuters video showed large cracks in the road, while police and emergency services tried to help anxious people roaming the streets. A car sat submerged in rubble as rescue workers combed through the ruins of a nearby building. President Tsai Ing-wen went to the scene of the quake early on Wednesday to help direct rescue operations. “The president has asked the cabinet and related ministries to immediately launch the ‘disaster mechanism’ and to work at the fastest rate on disaster relief work,” Tsai’s office said in a statement. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world’s largest contract chipmaker and major Apple supplier, said initial assess-

ments indicated no impact from the earthquake. Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China considers part of its territory, lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck nearby on Sunday. More than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and some Taiwanese remain scarred by a 7.6 magnitude quake that was felt across the island and killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
