Cardi B announces split from rapper husband Offset

NEW YORK - US rapper Cardi B on Wednesday announced the end of her 15-month marriage to Offset, the rapper and father of her daughter, dropping a video with the news on Instagram.

“It’s nobody’s fault it’s just like I guess we grew out of love,” says the 26-year-old, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar.

“We’re not together anymore. I don’t know, it might take time to get a divorce.”

Earlier this year, she confirmed reports that the pair had secretly married in September 2017. Their daughter, Kulture, was born in July.

The separation revelation comes two days before Cardi B is due to appear in a New York court over assault and reckless endangerment charges. She had been expected to appear Monday, but failed to turn up.

The case stems from an August strip club brawl, which celebrity website TMZ said Cardi B ordered to target two bartenders -- sisters who accuse her of harboring a grudge because one of them slept

with Offset.

“We’ve got a lot of love for each other but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time,” says Cardi B in the video.

“I’m going to always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father.”

Cardi B was in the Queens strip club on August 29 while Offset was performing in the hard-living hip hop trio Migos when someone in her group lobbed furniture, bruising an employee in the legs.

Cardi B has become one of the biggest new stars in US music since the runaway success last year of her song “Bodak Yellow,” which touches on her former life making ends meet as a stripper.

A Bronx native, she is the first female rapper to have had multiple No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

She was also involved in a fracas with fellow rapper Nicki Minaj at New York Fashion Week in September, later taking to Instagram to say that the older Minaj had questioned her parenting skills. (afp)

NEW YORK - Pop star Ariana Grande’s sugary new music video for the hit “Thank U, Next” is now the fastest to rack up 100 million views on YouTube, the platform told AFP Wednesday.

After dropping Friday, the clip needed little more than three days to eclipse South Korea’s Psy, whose video for “Gentleman” took a few hours longer to hit 100 million views in 2013.

Grande, 25, had teased the video -- which recreates scenes from several 2000s-era teen films including “Mean Girls” and “Legally Blonde” -- for weeks after releasing the break-up anthem on November 5.

“Thank U, Next” also broke the record for most views in the 24 hours after its YouTube release with 55.4 million, smashing the previous record of 45.9 million views held by Korean boy band BTS for “IDOL.” In the song, Grande reflects on former loves including rappers Big Sean and Mac Miller -- who committed suicide in September -- as well as the comedian and actor Pete Davidson, with whom she had a brief but heavily publicized engagement.

The track earned Grande, who launched her career acting in a series for the youth network Nickelodeon, her first number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, a music industry standard chart based on sales along with online streaming and radio play.

The confirmed deaths, believed to be of construction workers, mark the deadliest bout of violence in years to hit a region wracked by a low-level independence insurgency.

The bodies will be evacuated to the town of Timika from the remote district of Nduga, a mountainous region where the attack happened Sunday, local military commander Binsar Panjaitan said. “The latest information is that 16 bodies have been found,” Panjaitan told reporters in Papua.

The dead had not been identified and the military did not supply de-

tails about how they were killed.

An earlier eyewitness account supplied by the military detailed the killing of at least 19 people, including in execution style shootings or having their throat slit. Previous local media reports put the number of dead between 24 and 31.

On Thursday, the military warned that it was not yet clear whether all the dead worked for a state-owned contractor that has been building bridges and roads as part of efforts to boost infrastructure in the impoverished region.

Another 15 people -- including seven employees of the contractor

-- have been evacuated from the area. Many in Papua view Indonesia as a colonial occupier and its building work as a way to exert more control over a region that shares a border with Papua New Guinea, an independent nation.

Police and military teams sent to the area have come under rebel gunfire with one soldier killed and two wounded since Monday, according to authorities.

On Wednesday, the military supplied an account from one survivor identified by his initials “JA” who claimed about 50 rebels entered the workers’ camp on Saturday and led

them away with their hands tied behind their backs.

The following day, the rebels shot dead a group of workers, while some tried to escape, the account said. The attackers allegedly recaptured six workers and slit their throats, according to the uninjured witness, who said at least 19 employees had been killed in all.

A Facebook account purportedly run by the National Liberation Army of West Papua (TPNPB) said the armed group had killed 24 workers on the orders of regional commander Ekianus Kogoya.

Indonesia routinely blames separatists for violence in Papua and foreign media need permission to report there, making it difficult to

obtain reliable information.

Papua declared itself an independent nation from the Dutch in 1961, but neighbouring Indonesia took control of the resource-rich region two years later on the condition it hold an independence referendum. Indonesia to hold 11th Bali Democracy Forum

During the two-day meeting, participants will hold discussions and share experiences with regard to democratic practices, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a written statement posted on its official website on Wednesday.

The theme of the BDF this year is also aimed at encouraging stakeholders to understand and answer the challenges to create prosperity through democracy.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi will open the forum on Thursday morning (Dec 6). The forum will comprise two panel discussions themed “Making Democratic Institutions and Inclusive Prosperity Sustainable” and “Technology, Innovation, and the Future of Prosperity.”

Balinese cultural heritages overseas soon to be repatriated

DENPASAR - In the Bali Culture Congress III on Tuesday (Dec. 4), Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, did not only state that he immediately makes a regulation to protect Balinese culture. After the regulation is made, he will also repatriate the Balinese cultural heritage overseas. This includes the remains of Puputan Badung.

Related to this, the humanist I Made Bandem stated the repatriation should restore Balinese cultural objects remaining kept overseas whether they are movies, music, or other relics. Repatriation is important for sources of docu-

mentation, research and sources of art creation. However, there are usually difficulties encountered in terms of maintenance.

“Now, since there is digitalization, the important thing is that we can return it via digital format.

Digital items and then other objects having less value can be upgraded to make it have good quality,” he said.

Bandem gave an example of a record whose sound had been damaged because it was taken in 1928. With digitalization through sophisticated technology, the sound can be made better than the original one. Similar method can be applied to films. Like

last year, there was a film from Trunyan that will be returned to Bali but the film is watery where if opened it will blister and completely turn damaged. “There is laser technology used to illuminate, while the object can be returned to be intact and the film has been here now,” he added.

According to Bandem, the cultural heritage having been returned so far includes a 6-hour movie and 113 music records. Actually, there is still a 2-hour movie, but it hasn’t been excavated from Trunyan, Bangli, Buleleng, and Tabanan.

Paul Smith has launched a tuxedo collection inspired

IT’S just a humble collection, isn’t it?” says Paul Smith of his new womenswear tuxedo collection. “I think it’s exactly what people want at the moment – just nice, easy-to-wear, no-nonsense clothing.”

“Humble” actually equates to a 15-piece eveningwear collection of classic tuxedos, coats, silk blouses and accessories. The capsule was inspired by close (read: iconic) friends of the brand, including Patti Smith, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Rampling and Grace Coddington, who championed Smith’s burgeoning menswear offering in the ’70s as something women could also wear, and prompted Smith to launch his womenswear collection in 1998.

But, Smith muses, he has always been a fan of the tux for women. “When Mr Saint Laurent came up with the idea of a women’s trouser suit, I was 21 and living in Paris – I was actually there!” he remembers. “I’ve always thought it was a great piece of clothing for a modern girl – there’s movement, pockets…”

As you’d expect from a man whose brand is built on tailoring, the cuts of his new suits are precise – and flattering. “I like to respect the female form, so that means jackets that are slim through the ribcage with sharp shoulders and high armholes,” says Smith. “There are a lot of pretend tuxedos out there – which are normally just the style with a satin lapel – but ours use a fabric called barathea. It’s substantial and full of energy.”

It was at night school in his hometown of Nottingham that Smith learnt about the material. The tailoring skills he learned there were focused on ceremonial dress for the armed forces, rather than office or red carpet-wear.

“It’s really interesting, because those suits were all about making a person look powerful, strong and slim,” he shares. “So, the cut of these tuxedos makes you look important.”

The day the collection dropped, the brand sold five suits straight away. Who are these female customers who make up 25 per cent of Paul Smith sales? “Generally speaking, my clothes are worn by people who are not seeking attention,” he offers. “A lot of designers’ clothes are very confrontational. Mine are discreet, laid-back and wearable.”

Like the gentleman he is, Smith worries about the brands who splash shouty logos on their wares. “My prediction is that in five years time, these labels won’t be as important as they are now, because they’ve gone down the obvious route. I think one of the reasons we’re still doing OK is because we’ve never really worked on logos.”

Smith’s legions of loyal followers who rely on Paul Smith tailoring for its classicism – and rather fabulous silky inners – will attest otherwise. Plus, the fact that Smith stands proud as the owner of one of Britain’s few independent brands that enjoy international success is also testament to his understanding of what it takes to endure in an industry searching for newness. “It’s a business, you have to give 100 per cent or nothing,” he opines. “You can’t muck about.”

His parting comment about how to wear his tuxedo collection this party season is equally to the point. “Just wear it,” he concludes. “The great thing about it is that you can wear it in any way you want. Jane [Birkin] would wear it with Converse. Patti [Smith] would wear it with an old Joy Division T-shirt. So, just play with it.” (IBP/net)

Chanel sheds crocodile and snake skin

PARIS - Chanel has become the first luxury fashion house to turn its back on exotic animal pelts such as lizard, crocodile and snake skin, in a move hailed by animal rights groups Tuesday.

Its head of fashion Bruno Pavlovsky declared that it “would no longer use exotic skins in our future creations”, saying it was becoming more difficult to source high-quality pelts ethically.

Handbags, coats and shoes made from snake, alligator and stingray skin command premium prices, with Chanel handbags made from them reportedly selling for up to 9,000 euros ($10,300).

Python skin bags were removed from Chanel’s website Tuesday, although secondhand bags were still on sale from more than 5,500 euros from online resale sites.

Animals rights groups cheered the move, with the PETA and the Humane Society International (HSI) claiming that the iconic house founded by Coco Chanel was also renouncing the use of fur.

But in a statement Chanel did not mention fur, saying it would no longer use crocodile, lizard, snake and stingray to make coats, bags and shoes.

Its veteran designer Karl Lagerfeld had earlier told the industry bible Women’s Wear Daily that Chanel used fur so rarely that he could not remember the last time it featured on the catwalk.

He said the brand had chosen to drop exotic skins rather than having it “imposed on us. We did it because it’s in the air.

“It’s a free choice,” he added.

Animal rights groups hailed

Chanel as giving a lead to other luxury brands.

By turning its back on exotic skins, “Chanel is saving countless crocodiles, lizards, snakes and stingrays from suffering,” said HSI director Claire Bass.

“The growth in fabulous luxury and eco-friendly fibres that don’t involve animals suffering and dying is helping to drive forward this new era of ethical fashion.

“Fur-using brands such as Fendi (for which Lagerfeld also designs), Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton need to take heed and embrace this fur-free future,” she added.

PETA also piled the pressure on Vuitton, which is owned by fashion giant LVMH. “It’s clear that the time is now for all companies, like Louis Vuitton, to follow Chanel’s lead and move to innovative materials that spare countless animals a miserable life and a violent, painful death,” it said.

Although top fashion brands have been under heavy pressure to renounce fur, with Gucci, Armani, Versace and John Galliano all deciding to go fur free, Chanel’s decision to stop using exotic skins came out of the blue.

It said that it was now concentrating on developing a new generation of “ultra luxurious” products to replace them from its famous design studios.

Animal rights campaigns against the use of crocodile and snake skin products have not got the same traction with the public as similar crusades against fur, with some luxury brands even investing in reptile farms so they can guarantee that skins are sourced ethically. (afp)

BANGLI - Various efforts have been made by the Bangli district government to break the chain of the spread of the rabies virus. However until this year, rabies cases are still found.

Moreover, the spread of rabies increased. In 2017, the rabies cases were only found at nine villages, but throughout 2018 they have been found in 17 villages.

Section Head of the Bangli Animal Health Service at the Bangli Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Agency (PKP), Made Armana, stated on Wednesday (Dec. 5) the 17 villages where rabies cases found are the Songan A, Songan B, Sukawana, Suter, Batur Tengah, Siakin, Selulung, Kedisan, Buahan, Kintamani, Serai, Sulahan, Tiga, Abuan, Kayubihi, Tamanbali and Jehem village. The villages are now in the rabies red zone category. At the 17 villages were found 24 cases of rabies positive dogs.

“Two or three cases were found at one village. As at Songan, if I am not mistaken, three cases were found, three other cases at Suter and Batur Tengah,” he said.

When compared to 2017, Armana admitted there is an increase in the spread of rabies.

Last year, rabies cases in Bangli district were only found at nine villages. The increase in rabies cases, he said, does not only occur in Bangli district, but also

at several other districts. There is even a district that once had zero case, but now found a rabies case.

According to him, many factors can influence the increase in rabies cases. The main factor is the existence of wild dogs.

Armana admitted that from year to year stray dogs are difficult to control. “Wild dogs are very difficult to be vaccinated and eliminated, especially in areas with difficult terrain. This is one of the reasons because the wild dog is the source of rabies transmission,” he explained.

He added if only the number of stray dogs can be reduced and entirely vaccinated, he is confident the rabies cases in Bangli can be eliminated. To suppress rabies cases, his agency is very much expecting the participation of the entire community, namely by carrying out proper maintenance of dogs such as being tied or strapped. Even though this appeal had often been conveyed, his agency still finds many people keeping dogs in a way that is left behind, especially in the countryside. He admitted this condition often makes his agency difficult to vaccinate pet dog. “If people want to participate by binding or holding their dogs, we believe the handling of rabies cases can be maximized,” he said. BANGLI — Having an imperfect physique sometimes makes someone easy to despair and give up fighting for life. But this condition does not apply to I Ketut Salin, a resident of Pengotan village, Bangli. Even though he can’t see like other people in general, this 55-year-old man still attempts to undergo activities and work like most normal people do.

Armed with talents and abilities in synchronizing gamelan tones, Salin supports himself and his family by working as a gamelansmith. Moreover, amid the limitations of his vision, he often shares knowledge of playing gamelan with a number of groups or community groups.

When met at his workplace on Wednesday (Dec. 5), Salin said to have been blind since his birth. All this time, he can only see a bit of image from his eyes.

Because of his condition, he claimed to never know how people look, animal shapes, and other beautiful things in the world.

Although he is unable to see, since the age of five he had an interest in learning traditional Balinese music arts. His willingness to learn makes him finally skilled and adept at recognizing the types of tones. “I then joined a joged art troupe and play gamelan,” he explained.

Because of his proficiency in playing gamelan, around 2003, he was invited by one of the residents at Pengotan to work as a gamelansmith. He was invited to

He admitted that with the limitations of his vision, he faced many difficulties in working. He must be extra careful, especially when forging iron plates to be harmonized. Otherwise, the hammer used to forge the iron plate can hurt his hand or chainsaw can hurt him when cutting bamboo. MEXICO CITY - Marytrini Aguilar, a 43-year-old Mexican woman with a stable marriage and two grown children, may not be what most people have in mind when they think of the word “sexting.”

GIANYAR - Gianyar district government continues to improve the development at the Gianyar Botanical Garden (KRG) such as the improvement of a number of infrastructures. After completing the construction, the government held an animating or penguripan ceremony on Wednesday (Dec. 5).

Head of the KRG, Made Raka Adnyana, explained that his management carried out the building animation after completing the construction of candi bentar (split gates), gayor, lobby and circular variation in the KRG. In addition, the KRG has also prepared a parking area spreading across 6,000 square meters.

But she is proud to be part of a small but enthusiastic group of women shedding their clothes -- and their taboos -- to explore their sexuality and spice up their relationships by sharing racy selfies snapped on their cell phones.

“Sexting makes me feel free to express my sensuality. It flatters my vanity and makes me feel secure. It pleases me to please the person I’m sending the picture to,” Aguilar says.

Aguilar joined seven other women recently for a workshop in Mexico City on sexting safely and responsibly.

Sponsored by the Mexican government, the free workshop -- organized by women’s rights group Luchadoras -- is called “I sext, do you?”

It encourages participants to view sexting as a form of freedom of speech and sexual liberation, but also to be aware of the dangers.

“I haven’t told anyone about it yet,” says Aguilar, who takes pride in subverting the stereotype of a 40-something Mexican mom.

“I think (my friends) do it too, but they would never admit it. They see it as something for young women. Why would a married mother of two do it?” says the tattooed businesswoman, who has a 22-year-old son and 21-year-old daughter, and enjoys sexting with her husband.

She says the workshop -- taught in three four-hour sessions -- made her feel empowered.

“We learned we’re all the same, that we all have things to share, to keep exploring our sexuality and sensuality, and that everyone can be sensual,” she says.

Hackers have also made a twisted hobby of breaking into people’s phones and stealing

their intimate photographs.

In 2014, the problem drew worldwide attention when hackers leaked pictures of celebrities including actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Kirsten Dunst, model Kate Upton and singer Rihanna.

In Mexico, a country with a long history of machismo and alarming levels of violence against women -- seven women and girls are killed here every day, according to the United Nations -- eight states have outlawed revenge porn.

“It really is an attack and an invasion of privacy, and it is widespread throughout the country, on a massive, organized level,” says Lulu Barrera, the founder of Luchadoras and leader of the workshop.

She is adamant that women should not be the ones who are shamed in such cases.

“This idea that women who sext... have to be careful, that they shouldn’t express themselves sexually... what it does is make them the guilty party and re-victimizes them,” she says. (afp)

BANGUI - The line of parents waiting to see doctors stretches back outside the hospital into the dusty courtyard. Mums and dads carrying weak, starving children.

Many hanging limply in their arms like half empty sacks of rice.

The scene at the paediatric complex in Bangui, capital of Central African Republic, is not dissimilar to a war zone. And as conflict tears through the country, people here are desperately fighting another deadly foe: hunger.

protruding out above her skinny legs. A few metres away another malnourished girl sits barefoot, joints protruding, with shoulder blades poking out of her skin like blades, a baggy top the only clothing to cling to her perished frame.

“Central African Republic is one of the most difficult countries to be a child,” Donaig Le Dru, UNICEF spokesperson in CAR, told AFP. The statistics underline the horrors that stalk childhood in the country.

Infant mortality in CAR is the highest in the world, according to

the UN. One in 24 children die in the first 28 days of life.

The number of children with severe or acute malnutrition rose from around 32,000 to 43,000 between 2014 and the end of 2018.

And two out of three children -1.5 million youngsters in total -- are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to UNICEF. The UN’s World Food Programme warned last month that CAR was facing the worst situation of food insecurity in four years, with nearly two million people in urgent need of food aid. (afp)

Asian markets tumble, China tech hit after Huawei arrest

Shares across Asia plunged Thursday, with technology firms in Hong Kong and Shanghai battered after the arrest of a top executive at Chinese telecoms giant Huawei that has also fuelled fears about the recent China-US trade deal.

As Donald Trump and Xi Jinping’s tariffs ceasefire last weekend -- which sparked a one-day rally -- fades to a distant memory, investors are back in selling mood as they fret over a range of issues including the state of the world economy, oil prices and Brexit.

The chances of trade peace between the US and China took a blow Thursday as it emerged Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou had been held in Canada and faces extradition to the United States over alleged Iran sanctions breaches by the firm.

Meng is also the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese People’s Liberation Army engineer.

The company had been investigated by US intelligence, who deemed it a national security threat.

However, the arrest drew a swift response from China, which said it “firmly opposes and strongly protests” the move, adding it had urged Canada and the US to “immediately correct the wrongdoing”.

The news sent shudders through Hong Kong and Shanghai markets, where tech firms were hammered.

Hong Kong-listed ZTE, which was subject to a US banning order earlier his year over security fears before that was reduced to a massive fine, was 5.9 percent down. Market heavyweight Tencent was 3.6 percent lower and AAC Technologies was six percent off. Sunny Optical, which supplies Huawei, plunged 6.2 percent.

- ‘Significant’ And in Shanghai, Wingtech Technology was down by its daily limit of 10 percent, Raisecome Technology sank 3.8 percent and Fujian Raynen Technology lost 3.2 percent.

Taipei-listed tech firms were also hurt. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company lost 2.4 percent and Hong Hai Precision was 3.2 percent lower.

There were also losses for other tech firms in the region, with Sony down three percent in Tokyo and Samsung almost two percent lower. The sector was already under pressure from concerns about future growth and following a surge in recent years.

“This headline is quite significant as the US government is attempting to persuade allies to stop using Huawei equipment due to security fears,” said Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trade at OANDA. “Recall that over 100 Chinese companies traded limit down (last month) when news broke the US urged allies to blacklist Huawei?” Broader markets, which have also been hit by worries that the US economy is showing signs of slowing, were well down.

Hong Kong shed 2.6 percent by lunch while Shanghai lost 1.3 percent and Tokyo slipped 2.5 percent.

Taipei was 2.2 percent off, while Manila and Jakarta also dived. Sydney fell 0.5 percent, while Singapore and Seoul each gave up 1.3 percent. (afp)

UK’s key services sector barely growing amid Brexit concern

LONDON - Britain’s hugely important services sector is struggling in the face of Brexit, a closely watched survey showed Wednesday, as Prime Minister Theresa May strives to get the support of Parliament for her deal with the European Union.

In a monthly survey of a sector that accounts for around 80 percent of the British economy, financial information firm IHS Markit and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply found activity levels at their lowest since July 2016, just after the country voted to leave the European Union.

The sector barely grew during November according to the survey. The so-called purchasing managers’ index, a gauge of business activity, fell to 50.4 points in November from 52.2 the previous month.

That means the index is just above the 50point level that separates expansion from contraction on a 100-point scale.

“A sharp deterioration in service sector growth leaves the economy flat-lining in November as Brexit concerns intensified,” said Chris Williamson, chief business

economist at IHS Markit.

Optimism in the sector was also at its lowest level since the Brexit vote, again because of an intensification of anxieties related to the exit from the EU. Although the British economy managed to avoid falling into a recession after the Brexit vote, as many forecasters predicted, it has slowed significantly.

Business investment has been particularly weak as executives wait for clarity as to Britain’s future economic relationship with the EU. Many economists think this year’s economic growth will be the lowest since 2009, when the economy was in recession following the global financial crisis. With Brexit day looming — March 29, 2019 — and May struggling to get support from lawmakers for her agreement with the EU, concerns have grown that Britain

could crash out of the EU with no deal.

That could result in tariffs on British exports, restrictions on workers’ movements and onerous and costly border controls.

The Bank of England warned last week the British economy could shrink by 8 percent in a matter of months if the country crashes out of the EU with no deal and no transition period to new trading arrangements with the EU. May’s deal with the EU, which involves maintaining close ties for trade in goods, faces defeat on Dec. 11, and that’s likely to further stoke uncertainty. Several alternatives have been mooted in Parliament but it’s unclear whether any other proposal would win enough support.

One of the worries is that consumers could start to become cautious, too, especially in the run-up to the crucial Christmas trading period.

Wayang Lemah to Conquer the Times

Day puppet or wayang lemah performance is considered sacred and usually staged during the day and always associated with the execution of religious ceremony.

Puppet performance can only be staged by puppeteers who have undergone spiritual initiation through ceremony.

This puppet show is without using a screen and blencong oil lamp.

In playing the puppet, the puppeteer leans the puppets on a white thread of about half to one meter tied to an

erythrina wooden stick placed on a banana trunk on both sides of the puppeteer. The gamelan accompaniment is a gender puppet with a fivetone scale. Puppet show of this ceremony is very dependent on the time of the implementation of the religious ceremonies to be followed.

Supporting artists of this show are at least 3 to 5 people consisting of a puppeteer and one or two pairs of gender gamelan players.

As ritual arts, the day puppet show usually takes place around the

venue of ceremony without using a special stage. The storyline is adapted to the ceremony performed. If the staging is performed in Deva Yadnya, the play will feature Kunti Yadnya, Marisuda Bumi and others. Meanwhile, at the bhuta yadnya ceremony, the play will feature Bima Dadi Caru and so do the other ceremonies. They must be adjusted to the type of ceremony taking place. In the Balkans, winter cheer is darkened by a toxic smog

SARAJEVO - Winter is here and coal is burning, enveloping the Balkans in a toxic smog and turning its cities into some of the most polluted on the planet.

As hundreds of nations gather in Poland for the UN’s COP24 climate summit this week, residents in this corner of Europe are wondering when their governments will do anything to address an annual plague that is killing thousands.

The pollution levels reached alarming heights in early December.

On Tuesday, the Macedonian capital Skopje was ranked the third most polluted city in the world, while Sarajevo was fifth, according to the monitor AirVisual.

Pristina, the capital of Kosovo which relies on two coal-fired plants for more than 95 percent of its electricity, was not far behind.

“In three decades of teaching, I have never seen so many children cough and get sick,” said Vesna Delevska, a 56-year-old teacher in Skopje.

“On the worst days, many parents don’t even send their children to school,” she told AFP, describing the conditions as “unbearable”.

Lignite-fired power plants across the region, many of which are old and pollute heavily, plus the burning of coal to warm individual homes, pump the air with toxins.

In Skopje and Sarajevo, a ring of mountains helps trap the hazardous air in valleys where residents live, shrouding them in a grey fog.

An October UN report said fossil fuel emissions must be slashed by half in the next 12 years to limit global temperature rises.

But Balkan governments are bucking the European trend by boosting their investment coal, with plans to build new power plants across the region.

Rupiah falls in value in opening trade on Thursday

JAKARTA - The Indonesian currency rupiah fell in value against the U.S. dollar in the opening of inter-bank transaction here on Thursday morning.

The currency traded at 14,511 per dollar losing 121 points from earlier level of 14,390 per dollar.

Senior analyst of CSA Research Institute Reza Priyambada said the rupiah fall followed the regional trend.

“A number of Asian currencies also suffered under pressure facing the U.S. dollar,” Reza said. In addition there were limited positive sentiment in the country, he said. (ant)

The effects are plain to see. Five Balkan cities with coal or lignite-based industries are among Europe’s top ten most polluted cities, according to a 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) report.

They include Tuzla (Bosnia), Pljevlja (Montenegro), Skopje, Tetovo and Bitola (Macedonia).

The only ones benefiting from the pollution are those selling air purifiers, which one vendor in Macedonia’s capital said are flying off the shelves “like hot cakes”.

“People are emptying their wallets to breathe clean air,” said Vanco, who runs a store in Skopje and declined to give his last name.

An air purifier costs about 400 euros ($450) -- close to the average monthly salary in Macedonia and several of its Balkan neighbours.

But residents are digging into their savings, “even borrowing to buy the purifiers”, said Vanco. “Especially families with children,” he added.

The economic and human costs are high in a poor region with little extra cash to spare.

According to a WHO study, pollution cost the Western Balkans countries more than $55 billion in 2010.

It also caused more than 36,000 premature deaths that year across the region, which is home to 23 million people -- a proportion six times higher than in a country like France.

Since then, there have been no major efforts to curb pollution.

This winter the Macedonian Ministry of Health has announced the distribution of masks to 43,000 chronically ill people.

But Jane Dimeski, an activist with the citizen group “STOP air pollution”, sees it as a “short-term response...more than a serious fight against pollution”. (afp)

Extinction warning for Australia’s truffle-eating ‘rat kangaroo’

SYDNEY - A truffle-eating Australian marsupial known as the rat kangaroo has suffered a dramatic population decline and could become extinct without urgent action to save the species, a report warned Thursday.

The World Wildlife Fund said only two populations of the northern bettong remained in the wet coastal tropics of northern Queensland state, numbering at most 2,500 individuals, down 70 percent in the past 30 years.

The nocturnal, rabbit-sized bettongs are at risk from feral cats, land-clearing and wildfires, which have become more frequent and fierce in Queensland due to climate change.

“We know particularly with climate change a massive wildfire could be just around the corner,” said Tim Cronin, WWF’s senior manager for species conservation in Australia.

“Any situation where you have one population isolated and that’s all you have in the wild, it puts you at a really high risk.”

Cronin said it was critical to establish an “insurance population” of the northern bettong, protected from pests and fire, and consider raising the species’ status from “endangered” to “critically endangered”.

“It’s not too late for the northern bettong, but our window of opportunity for action is closing fast,” he said.

The northern bettong is one of the main animals which eat truffles, dispersing truffle spores across its habitat and maintaining a delicate ecological balance.

“It plays a really unique role in maintaining ecological function in the vegetation. So if we lose it -and other species like it -- we could be looking at ecological collapse,” Cronin said. (afp)

Survivors of Papua terror attack evacuated to Timika

TIMIKA - Eight survivors of a terror attack committed by armed criminal group members in Nduga District, Papua, arrived in Timika, Mimika District, Papua Province, on Thursday.

The survivors comprise seven men and one child. One of the men was rushed to Mimika regional public hospital for treatment of his injuries.

An Army helicopter evacuated the survivors from Nduga to Timika. The helicopter landed at Mozes Kilangin airport in Timika on Thursday at 10:50 a.m. local time.

Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Deputy Chief of the Indonesian Police (Polri) Commissioner General Ari Doni Sukmanto personally greeted the survivors upon their arrival at the airport.

A TNI and Polri joint team has found the location of 16 bodies of construction workers murdered by the armed criminals. The bodies would be evacuated today.

The officers have fully taken control of Mount Kabo area, where tens of workers of PT Istaka Karya were butchered while they were building bridges and roads expected to improve connectivity in the country`s eastern most province.

Com Gen Ari Dono Sukmanto confirmed on Wednesday that 22 people had been killed in an attack by an armed criminal group in Nduga.

He said 21 of the victims were civilians who were workers of Kali Yigi bridge construction from PT Istaka, while another one was a military member, Second Sergeant Handoko. (ant)

Indonesia rescues 20 Muslim Rohingya adrift off Aceh

KUALA IDI — Indonesian fishermen rescued a wooden boat carrying 20 hungry, weak Rohingya Muslims on Tuesday after it was found adrift off Indonesia’s northernmost province of Aceh, an official said.

The group of men and boys was discovered on the rickety boat about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) off the coast, said Syahrial, the head of East Aceh’s local disaster mitigation office.

Syahrial, who goes by a single name, said it

wasn’t clear where the group had traveled from or where they were heading.

An outbreak of violence that began in 2012 prompted thousands of Rohingya to flee Myanmar by sea to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. A fresh crisis last year sent hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fleeing by land to Bangladesh.

The people who were found Tuesday were brought ashore and placed in a navy shelter house in the Kuala Idi fishing port of East Aceh district while awaiting identification by

Indonesian immigration officials.

The group, ranging in age from 14 to 28, were weak from hunger and dehydration after a 15-day voyage, Syahrial said, adding that villagers donated clothes, food and drinking water.

“We could not yet communicate much with them as none of them speak English or Malay,” Syahrial said.

Some 300 Rohingya are still being sheltered in Aceh. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, is a strong supporter of the Rohingya cause. (ap)

The 41-year-old underwent surgery after the Saturday fight, and “his situation is still stable under the circumstances, but critical,” said doctor Alexis Turgeon.

Curry carries Warriors over Cavs, Thunder roar back

LOS ANGELES - Stephen Curry scored 42 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 129105 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday in an NBA Finals rematch in name only.

From dream to nightmare: Afghan ‘Little Messi’ forced to flee

Murtaza Ahmadi moved the world with his love for footballer Lionel Messi in 2016. His dream of meeting the Argentinian came true, but now the seven-year-old boy is living a nightmare as one of thousands of Afghans displaced by war.

Murtaza and his family abandoned their home in southeastern Ghazni province in November, along with hundreds of others fleeing intense fighting after the Taliban launched an offensive in the previously safe area.

Now they are among the thousands of similarly uprooted people struggling to get by in Kabul, and also living with the fear that the Taliban are hunting for their famous son.

The image of Murtaza sporting a makeshift Messi jersey -- made of a blue and white striped plastic bag and with Messi’s name and famous number 10 written carefully on the back in felt-tip pen -- flooded media and social networks in 2016.

The media hype drew the football superstar’s attention, and that year Murtaza met his idol in Qatar, where he walked out onto the pitch clutching Messi’s hand as a mascot for a Barcelona friendly.

Messi, a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, also gave his tiny fan an autographed jersey and a football. But the moment of happiness has quickly dissipated.

AFP met with the family recently in the cramped room in Kabul they are renting from another impoverished family, where Murtaza’s mother Shafiqa told how they had fled their home district of Jaghori in the night after hearing gunshots.

“We couldn’t take any of our belongings, we left only with our lives,” she said, her face half hidden by a scarf.

The family belongs to the Shiite-denominated Hazara ethnic group, who were targeted by the Sunni Taliban in their November operation in Ghazni.

The UN says up to 4,000 families fled, with witnesses describing “absolute terror” to AFP. Hundreds of civilians, soldiers, and insurgents were killed in the fighting.

The fear felt by the Ahmadi family was ratcheted up when they learned that the Taliban were searching for the small Murtaza by name. “(They) said if they capture him, they will cut him into pieces,” Shafiqa said, her eyes horrified.

Sports were rarely tolerated under the 1996-2001 Taliban regime, and the Kabul football stadium was a well-known venue for stonings and executions.

Shafiqa said she hid her famous son’s face with a scarf to prevent him from being recognised as they fled.

They took refuge first in a mosque in Bamiyan, before arriving in Kabul six days later. Among their belongings left behind are the football and jersey signed by Messi.

“At night we would sometimes see unknown men, watching and checking our house, and then the calls.

During the days, we wouldn’t dare let him outside home to play with other children.”

The family have already fled once before, to Pakistan in 2016, where they sought asylum in “any safe country”.

They returned reluctantly to Jaghori after their money ran out, Shafiqa said.

Murtaza’s father Arif remains in Jaghori working as a farmer while his family lives in Kabul under precarious conditions, with inadequate shelter, food, water or sanitation available to the refugees.

They are among the more than 300,000 Afghans -- 58 percent of whom are under the age of 18 -- who have fled their homes due to violence since the beginning of this year alone, according to the most recent tally by the UN’s agency for humanitarian affairs.

Homayoun, Murtaza’s eldest brother who made him his plastic jersey, says that even in Kabul he is afraid. “We are worried something bad will happen if they know who Murtaza is,” he said. Little Murtaza, meanwhile, says he misses his football and his jersey from Messi. “I want them back so I can play,” he told AFP. “I miss Messi,” he added.

“When I meet him, I will say, ‘Salaam’ and ‘How are you?’ Then he will reply saying thank you and be safe, and I will go with him to the pitch where he will play and I will watch him.” (afp)

Although Afghan security forces have beaten back the Taliban in Jaghori, the family says it no longer feels safe.

“The danger of the Taliban coming back is high, going back is not an option,” Shafiqa said. The attention they received as a result of Murtaza’s fame has added to their fears, she continued.

“Local strongmen were calling and saying, ‘You have become rich, pay the money you have received from Messi or we will take your son’,” she said.

Icardi eyes Ronaldo match-up as Inter bid to halt Juventus

Mauro Icardi said he was relishing the chance to measure himself against Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time as Inter Milan travel to Turin on Friday looking to inflict the first defeat of the season on Italian champions Juventus and keep the Serie A title race alive.

Gvozdyk, who won an Olympic bronze medal for Ukraine at the London 2012 Games, claimed the belt in his first shot at a major title.

Curry carries Warriors over Cavs, Thunder roar back

LOS ANGELES - Stephen Curry scored 42 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 129105 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday in an NBA Finals rematch in name only.

Curry drained nine three-pointers and Kevin Durant added 25 points on nine of 16 shooting as the Warriors pulled away in the second half against a Cleveland team that bears little resemblance to the LeBron James-led Cavs that battled the Warriors in the last four championship series.

In the Balkans, winter cheer is darkened by a toxic smog

SARAJEVO - Winter is here and coal is burning, enveloping the Balkans in a toxic smog and turning its cities into some of the most polluted on the planet.

As hundreds of nations gather in Poland for the UN’s COP24 climate summit this week, residents in this corner of Europe are wondering when their governments will do anything to address an annual plague that is killing thousands.

The pollution levels reached alarming heights in early December.

On Tuesday, the Macedonian capital Skopje was ranked the third most polluted city in the world, while Sarajevo was fifth, according to the monitor AirVisual.

Pristina, the capital of Kosovo which relies on two coal-fired plants for more than 95 percent of its electricity, was not far behind.

“In three decades of teaching, I have never seen so many children cough and get sick,” said Vesna Delevska, a 56-year-old teacher in Skopje.

“On the worst days, many parents don’t even send their children to school,” she told AFP, describing the conditions as “unbearable”.

Lignite-fired power plants across the region, many of which are old and pollute heavily, plus the burning of coal to warm individual homes, pump the air with toxins.

In Skopje and Sarajevo, a ring of mountains helps trap the hazardous air in valleys where residents live, shrouding them in a grey fog.

An October UN report said fossil fuel emissions must be slashed by half in the next 12 years to limit global temperature rises.

But Balkan governments are bucking the European trend by boosting their investment coal, with plans to build new power plants across the region.

Rupiah falls in value in opening trade on Thursday

JAKARTA - The Indonesian currency rupiah fell in value against the U.S. dollar in the opening of inter-bank transaction here on Thursday morning.

The currency traded at 14,511 per dollar losing 121 points from earlier level of 14,390 per dollar.

Senior analyst of CSA Research Institute Reza Priyambada said the rupiah fall followed the regional trend.

“A number of Asian currencies also suffered under pressure facing the U.S. dollar,” Reza said. In addition there were limited positive sentiment in the country, he said. (ant)

The effects are plain to see. Five Balkan cities with coal or lignite-based industries are among Europe’s top ten most polluted cities, according to a 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) report.

They include Tuzla (Bosnia), Pljevlja (Montenegro), Skopje, Tetovo and Bitola (Macedonia).

The only ones benefiting from the pollution are those selling air purifiers, which one vendor in Macedonia’s capital said are flying off the shelves “like hot cakes”.

“People are emptying their wallets to breathe clean air,” said Vanco, who runs a store in Skopje and declined to give his last name.

An air purifier costs about 400 euros ($450) -- close to the average monthly salary in Macedonia and several of its Balkan neighbours.

But residents are digging into their savings, “even borrowing to buy the purifiers”, said Vanco. “Especially families with children,” he added.

The economic and human costs are high in a poor region with little extra cash to spare.

According to a WHO study, pollution cost the Western Balkans countries more than $55 billion in 2010.

It also caused more than 36,000 premature deaths that year across the region, which is home to 23 million people -- a proportion six times higher than in a country like France.

Since then, there have been no major efforts to curb pollution.

This winter the Macedonian Ministry of Health has announced the distribution of masks to 43,000 chronically ill people.

But Jane Dimeski, an activist with the citizen group “STOP air pollution”, sees it as a “short-term response...more than a serious fight against pollution”. (afp)

Extinction warning for Australia’s truffle-eating ‘rat kangaroo’

SYDNEY - A truffle-eating Australian marsupial known as the rat kangaroo has suffered a dramatic population decline and could become extinct without urgent action to save the species, a report warned Thursday.

The World Wildlife Fund said only two populations of the northern bettong remained in the wet coastal tropics of northern Queensland state, numbering at most 2,500 individuals, down 70 percent in the past 30 years.

The nocturnal, rabbit-sized bettongs are at risk from feral cats, land-clearing and wildfires, which have become more frequent and fierce in Queensland due to climate change.

“We know particularly with climate change a massive wildfire could be just around the corner,” said Tim Cronin, WWF’s senior manager for species conservation in Australia.

“Any situation where you have one population isolated and that’s all you have in the wild, it puts you at a really high risk.”

Cronin said it was critical to establish an “insurance population” of the northern bettong, protected from pests and fire, and consider raising the species’ status from “endangered” to “critically endangered”.

“It’s not too late for the northern bettong, but our window of opportunity for action is closing fast,” he said.

The northern bettong is one of the main animals which eat truffles, dispersing truffle spores across its habitat and maintaining a delicate ecological balance.

“It plays a really unique role in maintaining ecological function in the vegetation. So if we lose it -and other species like it -- we could be looking at ecological collapse,” Cronin said. (afp)

Survivors of Papua terror attack evacuated to Timika

TIMIKA - Eight survivors of a terror attack committed by armed criminal group members in Nduga District, Papua, arrived in Timika, Mimika District, Papua Province, on Thursday.

The survivors comprise seven men and one child. One of the men was rushed to Mimika regional public hospital for treatment of his injuries.

An Army helicopter evacuated the survivors from Nduga to Timika. The helicopter landed at Mozes Kilangin airport in Timika on Thursday at 10:50 a.m. local time.

Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Deputy Chief of the Indonesian Police (Polri) Commissioner General Ari Doni Sukmanto personally greeted the survivors upon their arrival at the airport.

A TNI and Polri joint team has found the location of 16 bodies of construction workers murdered by the armed criminals. The bodies would be evacuated today.

The officers have fully taken control of Mount Kabo area, where tens of workers of PT Istaka Karya were butchered while they were building bridges and roads expected to improve connectivity in the country`s eastern most province.

Com Gen Ari Dono Sukmanto confirmed on Wednesday that 22 people had been killed in an attack by an armed criminal group in Nduga.

He said 21 of the victims were civilians who were workers of Kali Yigi bridge construction from PT Istaka, while another one was a military member, Second Sergeant Handoko. (ant)

Indonesia rescues 20 Muslim Rohingya adrift off Aceh

KUALA IDI — Indonesian fishermen rescued a wooden boat carrying 20 hungry, weak Rohingya Muslims on Tuesday after it was found adrift off Indonesia’s northernmost province of Aceh, an official said.

The group of men and boys was discovered on the rickety boat about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) off the coast, said Syahrial, the head of East Aceh’s local disaster mitigation office.

Syahrial, who goes by a single name, said it

wasn’t clear where the group had traveled from or where they were heading.

An outbreak of violence that began in 2012 prompted thousands of Rohingya to flee Myanmar by sea to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. A fresh crisis last year sent hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fleeing by land to Bangladesh.

The people who were found Tuesday were brought ashore and placed in a navy shelter house in the Kuala Idi fishing port of East Aceh district while awaiting identification by

Indonesian immigration officials.

The group, ranging in age from 14 to 28, were weak from hunger and dehydration after a 15-day voyage, Syahrial said, adding that villagers donated clothes, food and drinking water.

“We could not yet communicate much with them as none of them speak English or Malay,” Syahrial said.

Some 300 Rohingya are still being sheltered in Aceh. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, is a strong supporter of the Rohingya cause. (ap)

Asian markets tumble, China tech hit after Huawei arrest

Shares across Asia plunged Thursday, with technology firms in Hong Kong and Shanghai battered after the arrest of a top executive at Chinese telecoms giant Huawei that has also fuelled fears about the recent China-US trade deal.

As Donald Trump and Xi Jinping’s tariffs ceasefire last weekend -- which sparked a one-day rally -- fades to a distant memory, investors are back in selling mood as they fret over a range of issues including the state of the world economy, oil prices and Brexit.

The chances of trade peace between the US and China took a blow Thursday as it emerged Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou had been held in Canada and faces extradition to the United States over alleged Iran sanctions breaches by the firm.

Meng is also the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese People’s Liberation Army engineer.

The company had been investigated by US intelligence, who deemed it a national security threat.

However, the arrest drew a swift response from China, which said it “firmly opposes and strongly protests” the move, adding it had urged Canada and the US to “immediately correct the wrongdoing”.

The news sent shudders through Hong Kong and Shanghai markets, where tech firms were hammered.

Hong Kong-listed ZTE, which was subject to a US banning order earlier his year over security fears before that was reduced to a massive fine, was 5.9 percent down. Market heavyweight Tencent was 3.6 percent lower and AAC Technologies was six percent off. Sunny Optical, which supplies Huawei, plunged 6.2 percent.

- ‘Significant’ And in Shanghai, Wingtech Technology was down by its daily limit of 10 percent, Raisecome Technology sank 3.8 percent and Fujian Raynen Technology lost 3.2 percent.

Taipei-listed tech firms were also hurt. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company lost 2.4 percent and Hong Hai Precision was 3.2 percent lower.

There were also losses for other tech firms in the region, with Sony down three percent in Tokyo and Samsung almost two percent lower. The sector was already under pressure from concerns about future growth and following a surge in recent years.

“This headline is quite significant as the US government is attempting to persuade allies to stop using Huawei equipment due to security fears,” said Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trade at OANDA. “Recall that over 100 Chinese companies traded limit down (last month) when news broke the US urged allies to blacklist Huawei?” Broader markets, which have also been hit by worries that the US economy is showing signs of slowing, were well down.

Hong Kong shed 2.6 percent by lunch while Shanghai lost 1.3 percent and Tokyo slipped 2.5 percent.

Taipei was 2.2 percent off, while Manila and Jakarta also dived. Sydney fell 0.5 percent, while Singapore and Seoul each gave up 1.3 percent. (afp)

UK’s key services sector barely growing amid Brexit concern

LONDON - Britain’s hugely important services sector is struggling in the face of Brexit, a closely watched survey showed Wednesday, as Prime Minister Theresa May strives to get the support of Parliament for her deal with the European Union.

In a monthly survey of a sector that accounts for around 80 percent of the British economy, financial information firm IHS Markit and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply found activity levels at their lowest since July 2016, just after the country voted to leave the European Union.

The sector barely grew during November according to the survey. The so-called purchasing managers’ index, a gauge of business activity, fell to 50.4 points in November from 52.2 the previous month.

That means the index is just above the 50point level that separates expansion from contraction on a 100-point scale.

“A sharp deterioration in service sector growth leaves the economy flat-lining in November as Brexit concerns intensified,” said Chris Williamson, chief business

economist at IHS Markit.

Optimism in the sector was also at its lowest level since the Brexit vote, again because of an intensification of anxieties related to the exit from the EU. Although the British economy managed to avoid falling into a recession after the Brexit vote, as many forecasters predicted, it has slowed significantly.

Business investment has been particularly weak as executives wait for clarity as to Britain’s future economic relationship with the EU. Many economists think this year’s economic growth will be the lowest since 2009, when the economy was in recession following the global financial crisis. With Brexit day looming — March 29, 2019 — and May struggling to get support from lawmakers for her agreement with the EU, concerns have grown that Britain

could crash out of the EU with no deal.

That could result in tariffs on British exports, restrictions on workers’ movements and onerous and costly border controls.

The Bank of England warned last week the British economy could shrink by 8 percent in a matter of months if the country crashes out of the EU with no deal and no transition period to new trading arrangements with the EU. Tanah Lot attraction indeed deserves to be the most favorite tourist destination. When making a visit, tourists can witness uniqueness. Wayang Lemah to Conquer the Times

Day puppet or wayang lemah performance is considered sacred and usually staged during the day and always associated with the execution of religious ceremony.

Puppet performance can only be staged by puppeteers who have undergone spiritual initiation through ceremony.

This puppet show is without using a screen and blencong oil lamp.

In playing the puppet, the puppeteer leans the puppets on a white thread of about half to one meter tied to an

erythrina wooden stick placed on a banana trunk on both sides of the puppeteer. The gamelan accompaniment is a gender puppet with a fivetone scale. Puppet show of this ceremony is very dependent on the time of the implementation of the religious ceremonies to be followed.

Supporting artists of this show are at least 3 to 5 people consisting of a puppeteer and one or two pairs of gender gamelan players.

As ritual arts, the day puppet show usually takes place around the

venue of ceremony without using a special stage. The storyline is adapted to the ceremony performed. If the staging is performed in Deva Yadnya, the play will feature Kunti Yadnya, Marisuda Bumi and others. Meanwhile, at the bhuta yadnya ceremony, the play will feature Bima Dadi Caru and so do the other ceremonies. They must be adjusted to the type of ceremony taking place. GIANYAR - Gianyar district government continues to improve the development at the Gianyar Botanical Garden (KRG) such as the improvement of a number of infrastructures. After completing the construction, the government held an animating or penguripan ceremony on Wednesday (Dec. 5).

Head of the KRG, Made Raka Adnyana, explained that his management carried out the building animation after completing the construction of candi bentar (split gates), gayor, lobby and circular variation in the KRG. In addition, the KRG has also prepared a parking area spreading across 6,000 square meters.

The visits are dominated by study groups learning about the types of plants. “Most visits are to the education module to know about various ritual plants, thematic parks and research,” said Raka Adnyana.

But she is proud to be part of a small but enthusiastic group of women shedding their clothes -- and their taboos -- to explore their sexuality and spice up their relationships by sharing racy selfies snapped on their cell phones.

“Sexting makes me feel free to express my sensuality. It flatters my vanity and makes me feel secure. It pleases me to please the person I’m sending the picture to,” Aguilar says.

Aguilar joined seven other women recently for a workshop in Mexico City on sexting safely and responsibly.

Sponsored by the Mexican government, the free workshop -- organized by women’s rights group Luchadoras -- is called “I sext, do you?”

It encourages participants to view sexting as a form of freedom of speech and sexual liberation, but also to be aware of the dangers.

“I haven’t told anyone about it yet,” says Aguilar, who takes pride in subverting the stereotype of a 40-something Mexican mom.

“I think (my friends) do it too, but they would never admit it. They see it as something for young women. Why would a married mother of two do it?” says the tattooed businesswoman, who has a 22-year-old son and 21-year-old daughter, and enjoys sexting with her husband.

She says the workshop -- taught in three four-hour sessions -- made her feel empowered.

“We learned we’re all the same, that we all have things to share, to keep exploring our sexuality and sensuality, and that everyone can be sensual,” she says.

Intimate messages and photos are leaked online by erstwhile partners so often a term has been coined for it -- revenge porn. Various governments around the world have outlawed it, including 40 US states and countries from Britain to Japan.

Hackers have also made a twisted hobby of breaking into people’s phones and stealing

their intimate photographs.

In 2014, the problem drew worldwide attention when hackers leaked pictures of celebrities including actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Kirsten Dunst, model Kate Upton and singer Rihanna.

In Mexico, a country with a long history of machismo and alarming levels of violence against women -- seven women and girls are killed here every day, according to the United Nations -- eight states have outlawed revenge porn.

“It really is an attack and an invasion of privacy, and it is widespread throughout the country, on a massive, organized level,” says Lulu Barrera, the founder of Luchadoras and leader of the workshop.

She is adamant that women should not be the ones who are shamed in such cases.

“This idea that women who sext... have to be careful, that they shouldn’t express themselves sexually... what it does is make them the guilty party and re-victimizes them,” she says. (afp)

BANGUI - The line of parents waiting to see doctors stretches back outside the hospital into the dusty courtyard. Mums and dads carrying weak, starving children.

Many hanging limply in their arms like half empty sacks of rice.

The scene at the paediatric complex in Bangui, capital of Central African Republic, is not dissimilar to a war zone. And as conflict tears through the country, people here are desperately fighting another deadly foe: hunger.

In a doorway, a young girl stands with the round shape of her belly

protruding out above her skinny legs. A few metres away another malnourished girl sits barefoot, joints protruding, with shoulder blades poking out of her skin like blades, a baggy top the only clothing to cling to her perished frame.

“Central African Republic is one of the most difficult countries to be a child,” Donaig Le Dru, UNICEF spokesperson in CAR, told AFP. The statistics underline the horrors that stalk childhood in the country.

Infant mortality in CAR is the highest in the world, according to

the UN. One in 24 children die in the first 28 days of life.

The number of children with severe or acute malnutrition rose from around 32,000 to 43,000 between 2014 and the end of 2018.

And two out of three children -1.5 million youngsters in total -- are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to UNICEF. The UN’s World Food Programme warned last month that CAR was facing the worst situation of food insecurity in four years, with nearly two million people in urgent need of food aid. (afp)

Paul Smith has launched a tuxedo collection inspired

IT’S just a humble collection, isn’t it?” says Paul Smith of his new womenswear tuxedo collection. “I think it’s exactly what people want at the moment – just nice, easy-to-wear, no-nonsense clothing.”

“Humble” actually equates to a 15-piece eveningwear collection of classic tuxedos, coats, silk blouses and accessories. The capsule was inspired by close (read: iconic) friends of the brand, including Patti Smith, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Rampling and Grace Coddington, who championed Smith’s burgeoning menswear offering in the ’70s as something women could also wear, and prompted Smith to launch his womenswear collection in 1998.

But, Smith muses, he has always been a fan of the tux for women. “When Mr Saint Laurent came up with the idea of a women’s trouser suit, I was 21 and living in Paris – I was actually there!” he remembers. “I’ve always thought it was a great piece of clothing for a modern girl – there’s movement, pockets…”

As you’d expect from a man whose brand is built on tailoring, the cuts of his new suits are precise – and flattering. “I like to respect the female form, so that means jackets that are slim through the ribcage with sharp shoulders and high armholes,” says Smith. “There are a lot of pretend tuxedos out there – which are normally just the style with a satin lapel – but ours use a fabric called barathea. It’s substantial and full of energy.”

It was at night school in his hometown of Nottingham that Smith learnt about the material. The tailoring skills he learned there were focused on ceremonial dress for the armed forces, rather than office or red carpet-wear.

“It’s really interesting, because those suits were all about making a person look powerful, strong and slim,” he shares. “So, the cut of these tuxedos makes you look important.”

The day the collection dropped, the brand sold five suits straight away. Who are these female customers who make up 25 per cent of Paul Smith sales? “Generally speaking, my clothes are worn by people who are not seeking attention,” he offers. “A lot of designers’ clothes are very confrontational. Mine are discreet, laid-back and wearable.”

Like the gentleman he is, Smith worries about the brands who splash shouty logos on their wares. “My prediction is that in five years time, these labels won’t be as important as they are now, because they’ve gone down the obvious route. I think one of the reasons we’re still doing OK is because we’ve never really worked on logos.”

Smith’s legions of loyal followers who rely on Paul Smith tailoring for its classicism – and rather fabulous silky inners – will attest otherwise. Plus, the fact that Smith stands proud as the owner of one of Britain’s few independent brands that enjoy international success is also testament to his understanding of what it takes to endure in an industry searching for newness. “It’s a business, you have to give 100 per cent or nothing,” he opines. “You can’t muck about.”

His parting comment about how to wear his tuxedo collection this party season is equally to the point. “Just wear it,” he concludes. “The great thing about it is that you can wear it in any way you want. Jane [Birkin] would wear it with Converse. Patti [Smith] would wear it with an old Joy Division T-shirt. So, just play with it.” (IBP/net)

Chanel sheds crocodile and snake skin

PARIS - Chanel has become the first luxury fashion house to turn its back on exotic animal pelts such as lizard, crocodile and snake skin, in a move hailed by animal rights groups Tuesday.

Its head of fashion Bruno Pavlovsky declared that it “would no longer use exotic skins in our future creations”, saying it was becoming more difficult to source high-quality pelts ethically.

Handbags, coats and shoes made from snake, alligator and stingray skin command premium prices, with Chanel handbags made from them reportedly selling for up to 9,000 euros ($10,300).

Python skin bags were removed from Chanel’s website Tuesday, although secondhand bags were still on sale from more than 5,500 euros from online resale sites.

Animals rights groups cheered the move, with the PETA and the Humane Society International (HSI) claiming that the iconic house founded by Coco Chanel was also renouncing the use of fur.

But in a statement Chanel did not mention fur, saying it would no longer use crocodile, lizard, snake and stingray to make coats, bags and shoes.

Its veteran designer Karl Lagerfeld had earlier told the industry bible Women’s Wear Daily that Chanel used fur so rarely that he could not remember the last time it featured on the catwalk.

He said the brand had chosen to drop exotic skins rather than having it “imposed on us. We did it because it’s in the air.

“It’s a free choice,” he added.

- ‘Ethical fashion’ -

Animal rights groups hailed

Chanel as giving a lead to other luxury brands.

By turning its back on exotic skins, “Chanel is saving countless crocodiles, lizards, snakes and stingrays from suffering,” said HSI director Claire Bass.

“The growth in fabulous luxury and eco-friendly fibres that don’t involve animals suffering and dying is helping to drive forward this new era of ethical fashion.

“Fur-using brands such as Fendi (for which Lagerfeld also designs), Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton need to take heed and embrace this fur-free future,” she added.

PETA also piled the pressure on Vuitton, which is owned by fashion giant LVMH. “It’s clear that the time is now for all companies, like Louis Vuitton, to follow Chanel’s lead and move to innovative materials that spare countless animals a miserable life and a violent, painful death,” it said.

Although top fashion brands have been under heavy pressure to renounce fur, with Gucci, Armani, Versace and John Galliano all deciding to go fur free, Chanel’s decision to stop using exotic skins came out of the blue.

It said that it was now concentrating on developing a new generation of “ultra luxurious” products to replace them from its famous design studios.

Animal rights campaigns against the use of crocodile and snake skin products have not got the same traction with the public as similar crusades against fur, with some luxury brands even investing in reptile farms so they can guarantee that skins are sourced ethically. (afp)

BANGLI - Various efforts have been made by the Bangli district government to break the chain of the spread of the rabies virus. However until this year, rabies cases are still found.

Moreover, the spread of rabies increased. In 2017, the rabies cases were only found at nine villages, but throughout 2018 they have been found in 17 villages.

Section Head of the Bangli Animal Health Service at the Bangli Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Agency (PKP), Made Armana, stated on Wednesday (Dec. 5) the 17 villages where rabies cases found are the Songan A, Songan B, Sukawana, Suter, Batur Tengah, Siakin, Selulung, Kedisan, Buahan, Kintamani, Serai, Sulahan, Tiga, Abuan, Kayubihi, Tamanbali and Jehem village. The villages are now in the rabies red zone category. At the 17 villages were found 24 cases of rabies positive dogs.

“Two or three cases were found at one village. As at Songan, if I am not mistaken, three cases were found, three other cases at Suter and Batur Tengah,” he said.

When compared to 2017, Armana admitted there is an increase in the spread of rabies.

Last year, rabies cases in Bangli district were only found at nine villages. The increase in rabies cases, he said, does not only occur in Bangli district, but also

at several other districts. There is even a district that once had zero case, but now found a rabies case.

According to him, many factors can influence the increase in rabies cases. The main factor is the existence of wild dogs.

Armana admitted that from year to year stray dogs are difficult to control. “Wild dogs are very difficult to be vaccinated and eliminated, especially in areas with difficult terrain. This is one of the reasons because the wild dog is the source of rabies transmission,” he explained.

He added if only the number of stray dogs can be reduced and entirely vaccinated, he is confident the rabies cases in Bangli can be eliminated. To suppress rabies cases, his agency is very much expecting the participation of the entire community, namely by carrying out proper maintenance of dogs such as being tied or strapped. Even though this appeal had often been conveyed, his agency still finds many people keeping dogs in a way that is left behind, especially in the countryside. He admitted this condition often makes his agency difficult to vaccinate pet dog. “If people want to participate by binding or holding their dogs, we believe the handling of rabies cases can be maximized,” he said. BANGLI — Having an imperfect physique sometimes makes someone easy to despair and give up fighting for life. But this condition does not apply to I Ketut Salin, a resident of Pengotan village, Bangli. Even though he can’t see like other people in general, this 55-year-old man still attempts to undergo activities and work like most normal people do.

Armed with talents and abilities in synchronizing gamelan tones, Salin supports himself and his family by working as a gamelansmith. Moreover, amid the limitations of his vision, he often shares knowledge of playing gamelan with a number of groups or community groups.

When met at his workplace on Wednesday (Dec. 5), Salin said to have been blind since his birth. All this time, he can only see a bit of image from his eyes.

Because of his condition, he claimed to never know how people look, animal shapes, and other beautiful things in the world.

Although he is unable to see, since the age of five he had an interest in learning traditional Balinese music arts. His willingness to learn makes him finally skilled and adept at recognizing the types of tones. “I then joined a joged art troupe and play gamelan,” he explained.

Because of his proficiency in playing gamelan, around 2003, he was invited by one of the residents at Pengotan to work as a gamelansmith. He was invited to

work as a gamelan tuner namely synchronizing tunes of gamelan instruments such as gangsa, kantil and jegog. “It is to harmonize the gamelan tones to make it pleasant to hear,” he said.

He admitted that with the limitations of his vision, he faced many difficulties in working. He must be extra careful, especially when forging iron plates to be harmonized. Otherwise, the hammer used to forge the iron plate can hurt his hand or chainsaw can hurt him when cutting bamboo. He must do it carefully. “So far, I’ve been working on feeling because of being unable to use vision,” said Salin.

Even though it is quite risky, he does them all carefully. He claimed to be the backbone of his family. All this time, he had to work to meet his needs and his two teenage daughters. To him, limited vision is not an obstacle to fighting for life.

He even advised those who are in the same boat to keep on trying and working by utilizing all the strengths and skills possessed. Likewise, those with normal physical conditions, he reminded to take advantage of the time and advantages possessed for work. “A man like me can work let alone the normal people. They have a chance. The most important is diligence,” said Salin.

Aside from being a gamelansmith since 2000, he has also been active in teaching gamelan art. Other than at his home village, he even frequently teaches community groups to get to the Kintamani subdistrict. (kmb40)

Cardi B announces split from rapper husband Offset

NEW YORK - US rapper Cardi B on Wednesday announced the end of her 15-month marriage to Offset, the rapper and father of her daughter, dropping a video with the news on Instagram.

“It’s nobody’s fault it’s just like I guess we grew out of love,” says the 26-year-old, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar.

“We’re not together anymore. I don’t know, it might take time to get a divorce.”

Earlier this year, she confirmed reports that the pair had secretly married in September 2017. Their daughter, Kulture, was born in July.

The separation revelation comes two days before Cardi B is due to appear in a New York court over assault and reckless endangerment charges. She had been expected to appear Monday, but failed to turn up.

The case stems from an August strip club brawl, which celebrity website TMZ said Cardi B ordered to target two bartenders -- sisters who accuse her of harboring a grudge because one of them slept

with Offset.

“We’ve got a lot of love for each other but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time,” says Cardi B in the video.

“I’m going to always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father.”

Cardi B was in the Queens strip club on August 29 while Offset was performing in the hard-living hip hop trio Migos when someone in her group lobbed furniture, bruising an employee in the legs.

Cardi B has become one of the biggest new stars in US music since the runaway success last year of her song “Bodak Yellow,” which touches on her former life making ends meet as a stripper.

A Bronx native, she is the first female rapper to have had multiple No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

NEW YORK - Pop star Ariana Grande’s sugary new music video for the hit “Thank U, Next” is now the fastest to rack up 100 million views on YouTube, the platform told AFP Wednesday.

After dropping Friday, the clip needed little more than three days to eclipse South Korea’s Psy, whose video for “Gentleman” took a few hours longer to hit 100 million views in 2013.

Grande, 25, had teased the video -- which recreates scenes from several 2000s-era teen films including “Mean Girls” and “Legally Blonde” -- for weeks after releasing the break-up anthem on November 5.

“Thank U, Next” also broke the record for most views in the 24 hours after its YouTube release with 55.4 million, smashing the previous record of 45.9 million views held by Korean boy band BTS for “IDOL.” In the song, Grande reflects on former loves including rappers Big Sean and Mac Miller -- who committed suicide in September -- as well as the comedian and actor Pete Davidson, with whom she had a brief but heavily publicized engagement.

The track earned Grande, who launched her career acting in a series for the youth network Nickelodeon, her first number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, a music industry standard chart based on sales along with online streaming and radio play.

The confirmed deaths, believed to be of construction workers, mark the deadliest bout of violence in years to hit a region wracked by a low-level independence insurgency.

The bodies will be evacuated to the town of Timika from the remote district of Nduga, a mountainous region where the attack happened Sunday, local military commander Binsar Panjaitan said. “The latest information is that 16 bodies have been found,” Panjaitan told reporters in Papua.

The dead had not been identified and the military did not supply de-

tails about how they were killed.

An earlier eyewitness account supplied by the military detailed the killing of at least 19 people, including in execution style shootings or having their throat slit. Previous local media reports put the number of dead between 24 and 31.

On Thursday, the military warned that it was not yet clear whether all the dead worked for a state-owned contractor that has been building bridges and roads as part of efforts to boost infrastructure in the impoverished region.

Another 15 people -- including seven employees of the contractor

-- have been evacuated from the area. Many in Papua view Indonesia as a colonial occupier and its building work as a way to exert more control over a region that shares a border with Papua New Guinea, an independent nation.

Police and military teams sent to the area have come under rebel gunfire with one soldier killed and two wounded since Monday, according to authorities.

On Wednesday, the military supplied an account from one survivor identified by his initials “JA” who claimed about 50 rebels entered the workers’ camp on Saturday and led

them away with their hands tied behind their backs.

The following day, the rebels shot dead a group of workers, while some tried to escape, the account said. The attackers allegedly recaptured six workers and slit their throats, according to the uninjured witness, who said at least 19 employees had been killed in all.

A Facebook account purportedly run by the National Liberation Army of West Papua (TPNPB) said the armed group had killed 24 workers on the orders of regional commander Ekianus Kogoya.

Indonesia routinely blames separatists for violence in Papua and foreign media need permission to report there, making it difficult to

obtain reliable information.

Papua declared itself an independent nation from the Dutch in 1961, but neighbouring Indonesia took control of the resource-rich region two years later on the condition it hold an independence referendum.
