LONDON - Say You’ll Be There: Best-selling 90s girl band the Spice Girls promise to give fans what they really, really want on a UK reunion tour next year.

The band -- minus pop star-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham -- released details of a comeback tour, which will see them play Wembley Stadium, Britain’s biggest venue.

In a video shared on the band’s newly created Twitter account, the four remaining members staged a mock news broadcast to confirm rumours of the tour. Beckham, also known as Posh Spice, later posted a photo of the foursome on social media alongside a statement.

“I won’t be joining my girls on stage again but being in the Spice Girls was a hugely important part of my life and I wish my girls so much love and fun as they go back on tour,” she wrote on Instagram.

The pop phenomenon’s announcement sparked celebration from fans on social media, including from British singer Adele who shared a throwback childhood photo of herself posing excitedly in front of magazine posters of the band on her bedroom wall.

“This is how I feel right now! I am ready,” she added on Instagram.

The band’s official Twitter account, which promised a “new generation of girl power” was flooded with a frenzy of posts from nostalgic fans.

“The Spice Girls performing in my home town!

I need to sit down. I can’t breathe!!” tweeted Wez from Sunderland.

“I’m already packing my Union Jack dress and platform shoes, see you there,” another fan, Vicky, added. Jessica Morgan joked on Twitter: “My life depends on successfully purchasing a Spice Girls ticket.”

The tour will take in six British cities next year, including Manchester on June 1, the Scottish capital Edinburgh a week later and culminating at Wembley on June 15.

Ahead of the announcement, Melanie Brown (also known as Mel B and Scary Spice) left the door open to Beckham’s possible involvement.

“It’s just the four of us that are fully confirmed, but you know, Vic might join us at some point,” she told Britain’s ITV network.

“She’s got a full-on life with all of her work commitments and her fashion line and her kids, so, she’s just kind of not committing just yet,” Brown added.

The group stormed to worldwide fame in 1996 after the release of their first single “Wannabe”, spreading their message of girl power, eventually going on to sell 85 million albums worldwide. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - Idris Elba has received an “ego boost” after being named the sexiest man alive by US celebrity magazine People.

The British actor and star of The Wire, Luther and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom tweeted a picture of the front cover and said he was “honoured and thankful”, while also urging people to vote in the midterm elections.

Elba, who was revealed as the winner on Monday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, follows in the equally sexy footsteps of previous winners including David Beckham, Mel Gibson and

Hundreds of grieving relatives prayed Tuesday at the spot where a Lion Air jet plunged into the sea as revelations over the jet’s malfunctioning air speed indicator raised fresh questions about the cause of the accident.

Tearful mourners aboard a pair of Indonesian navy vessels tossed bouquets and scattered flower petals into the Java Sea off the country’s north coast where the brand new jet crashed last week, killing all 189 people on board.

Search teams have filled some 164 body bags with remains found after the devastating crash, but only 27 victims have been identified so far, police said.

The Boeing 737-Max 8, one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes, crashed on October 29 just

12 minutes into a one-hour flight from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city on Sumatra island.

Flight JT610 sped up as it suddenly lost altitude and then vanished from radar shortly after takeoff. Divers have retrieved the flight data recorder but are still hunting for the plane’s cockpit voice recorder. There is still no answer as to what caused the crash, with a preliminary report expected at the end of the month.

But the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee said Monday that flight recorder

data has so far revealed the plane’s air speed indicator was not working properly on its last four journeys, including the fatal flight.

The glitch had been repeatedly serviced and Lion Air’s technical team declared the plane to be airworthy.

“The technical problems on the three previous flights should have been treated as a repeat problem that cannot be fixed the same way each time,” aviation expert Alvin Lie told AFP. A more thorough check should have been done followed by a test

flight before the plane was put back into service, he added. “The air speed indicator is a part of vital flight instruments. If it’s broken then it’s a ‘no-go’ for the plane,” Lie said. Gerry Soejatman, another aviation analyst, said finding the cockpit voice recorder was critical for knowing how the crew reacted to the malfunction and what role it played in the crash.

“The air speed indicator plays a very important role, but (that) alone is not enough to cause a plane to crash,” he said.

It is not clear how much training the Lion pilots had on the new jet -- which only went into service in August -- or whether the problems could affect other Boeing 737

MAX planes.

Budget carrier Lion has been plagued by safety concerns and customer complaints over unreliable scheduling and poor service.

The carrier has been involved in a number of incidents including a fatal 2004 crash and a collision between two Lion Air planes at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport. Road recycle asphalt

UTILIZATION of the road asphalt recycle is very important to be applied in Bali. It is considering the overlay technique having been applied so far greatly impacts on the height of the road. In addition, the engineers in Bali face difficulties in the matters of land.

On that account, this recycling method is expected to be a solution for future green construction. “This should be done in the future. In Bali, the last recycling method was ever conducted in 2010 for the Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra at Kusamba,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Road Development Association (HPJI) of Bali Chapter, Nusakti Yasa Wedha, amid the seminar related to road development technology in Wisma Bima, Kuta, on Monday (Nov. 5).

His organization through APJI has not been able to target how many ways can apply this recycle method in Bali. All this time, there

has been no target for recycling.

For Bali, Nusakti regretted if this recycling method will not be implemented. The road section in urban areas whose land is already minimal will certainly make buildings and shops sink or lower than the road if recycling method is not applied.

Actually many people have owned the knowledge on this recycling method, but it has not been implemented yet. He admitted there are very few managers and contractors having this recycling equipment. “In Indonesia, this method has been widely applied.

But in Bali it indeed has not. So far the average road sections in Bali are still quite good, and only a few roads have been damaged,” he said.

Scooter firm Bird pushes for law change with London trial

ZUHAI - China unveiled on Tuesday a replica of its first permanently crewed space station, which would replace the international community’s orbiting laboratory and symbolises the country’s major ambitions beyond Earth.

The 17-metre (55-foot) core module was a star attraction at the biennial Airshow China in the southern coastal city of Zhuhai, the country’s main aerospace industry exhibition.

Outside, China’s J-10 fighter jet and J-20 stealth fighter wowed spectators as they zoomed across Zhuhai’s sky. Back inside, the country displayed its fleet of drones and other military hardware.

Crowds gathered around the cylindrical space station module representing the living and working quarters of the Tiangong -- or “Heavenly Palace” -- which will also have two other modules for scientific experiments and will be equipped with solar panels.

Three astronauts will be permanently stationed in the 60-tonne orbiting lab, which will enable the crew to conduct biological and microgravity research.

Assembly is expected to be completed around 2022 and the station would have a lifespan of around 10 years.

The International Space Station -- a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan -- has been in operation since 1998 but is due to be retired in 2024.

China will then have the only space station in orbit, though it will be much smaller than the ISS which weighs 400 tonnes and is as large as a football pitch.

- Billions spent -

The country announced in May

that the lab would be open to “all countries” to conduct science experiments.

“There is no doubt that China will use its station in a similar way as the ISS partners are using their outpost: research, technology and as a stepping-stone for deep-space exploration,” said Chen Lan, analyst at GoTaikonauts.com, a website specialised in the Chinese space programme.

Research institutes, universities, and public and private companies have been invited to propose projects.

Some 40 plans from 27 countries and regions have been received, according to state media.

The European Space Agency has sent astronauts to China to receive training in order to be ready to work inside the Chinese space station once it is launched.

“I’m sure over time China will be successful developing partnerships,” said Bill Ostrove, space analyst with US-based Forecast International consultancy.

“Many countries, and increasingly private companies and universities, have space programmes, but cannot afford to build their own space station,” he said.

“The ability to put payloads and experiments on a human spaceflight platform is extremely valuable.”

Beijing is pouring billions into its military-run space programme, with plans to send humans to the Moon in the near future.

Citing China as a threat, US President Donald Trump has launched plans to create a new “Space Force” to give his country dominance over rivals in space.

- Diverse space market -

But China’s space programme has encountered some glitches.

A space lab dubbed Tiangong-1 disintegrated as it plunged back to Earth in early April, two years after it ceased functioning.

Chinese authorities denied that the lab -- which was placed in orbit in September 2011 as a testing ground for the permanent station -- was out of control.

A second lab, the Tiangong-2, was launched into orbit in 2016.

“Despite a lot of talk of the opposite, the United States remains the most dominant power in space right now,” Ostrove said.

“The most likely scenario for the future is that China will emerge as one of the major space powers,” he said.

But Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan and India will continue to play “major roles” in space exploration, while private firms are becoming increasingly important in the sector, Ostrove added.

“The space market is becoming more diverse,” he said, “so it will be difficult for one or two countries or companies to dominate the field in the way the US and Soviet Union did during the Cold War.” (afp)

THE Californian electric scooter business Bird is launching a pilot service on London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

It is illegal to ride powered scooters on public roads or pavements in the UK but Bird hopes to get the law changed within 12 months.

The company, which operates in around 40 American cities, believes that its pilot scheme - on private land - will demonstrate the usefulness of this hop on, hop off form of transport and its environmental benefits.

The scooters are unlocked with an app, and will only be available between 07:00 and 21:00.

They will then be collected and charged overnight, and Bird says that will mean that the problems with theft, vandalism - and latenight drunks - which have afflicted some bike-sharing schemes, will be avoided.

I had a go and after a wobbly start found the scooter an easier ride than expected, though rounding a corner presented a challenge.

And while I was happy enough tootling along a path across the park, I’m not so sure I’d enjoy sharing one of London’s busy highways with lorries, cars and bikes - nor I suspect would they be too tolerant of a swarm of scooters.

But Bird’s UK and Nordics chief Richard Corbett says that in Paris and Amsterdam, where it is already operating, the scooters have quickly found a place in the urban transport mix and shown they can

be safe.

By making a big noise about this small pilot scheme the Californian company hopes to build momentum towards getting the law changed, so that it can start a commercial operation on London’s streets.

Mr Corbett seems certain that the regulators and lawmakers will move fast:”It’s a journey that we have to start and today’s the first step, but I’m confident that within the next 12 months we should have regulations changing.”

That seems very optimistic.

Having tangled with Uber and its “move fast and break things philosophy”, London’s regulators are likely to be cautious about this latest impatient American tech firm.

Then there is the question of the business model.

Users will pay £1 ($1.30) to unlock a scooter and then 20p per minute. That will be reasonably cheap for the short distances in the Olympic Park, albeit more costly than the free shuttle bus taking people to Stratford station.

If it does get approval to operate in London, users may baulk at paying £5 for a 20-minute ride.

Still, Bird can afford to lose money for quite a while. This summer it raised $300m (£230m) at a reported valuation of $2bn.

Maybe it is the future of short hop transport - or perhaps the Silicon Valley venture capitalists have lost touch with the reality of how ordinary mortals move across cities. (IBP/net)

Alleged to be Chinese mafia syndicate

Municipal police ask entrepreneurs to make statement

MANGUPURA — The Badung Municipal Police ordered businessmen alleged to belong to Chinese mafia syndicate to make a statement. In the letter, the judicial team asked if they will be found to employ foreign workers without permission they must be ready to close their business premises.

Head of the Badung Municipal Police, IGAK Suryanegara, stated that of the 12 businesses netted, ten of them are asked to make a statement. Meanwhile, two other businesses are given first reprimand letter because they do not have permission.

“Two business premises do not have complete permits. We provide them with first reprimand letter.

These businesses are located on Jalan Sunset Road and Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. “Both are required to submit licensing and asked not to open the stores before the permit is obtained,” said IGAK Suryanegara when confirmed Monday (Nov. 5).

Although the ten businesses have obtained complete permits, IGAK Suryanegara emphasized if during the inspection they are found to employ foreign workers without permit, they should be ready to close their business premises.

According to him, even though they only rename the business, the entrepreneurs must keep reporting to the government and submitting the permit. Moreover, the items sold are different. “One management and network must still make a reporting because the goods sold are different,” he said.

Previously, IGAK Suryanegara gave them a chance to complete their licensing as long as the permit has not yet been issued, and all the business activities at the location had to be suspended. If after the provision of time limit

they still do not submit their permit at all, according to the SOP, they will be given the first reprimand with the validity of seven days. If this reprimand is not addressed, the second reprimand will be issued having the period of seven days. If this reprimand is still ignored as well, the third reprimand will be issued with validity for three days.

“If within three days there is no intention (for submitting the permit), then we will file this case to judicial session to make a decision for sealing the business premises,” he explained.

MANGUPURA — Two Australian citizens, namely Mohamad Said, 31, and Ahmed Elgammal, 28, were beaten by four people in a taxi so they were battered in front of a restaurant on Jalan Raya Seminyak, Kuta, on Friday (Nov. 2). In addition, the victims claimed to have lost their goods.

“The victim suffered bruising, torn wounds all over the body and fractured left hand. The actions were allegedly committed by local people and foreigners. The victims lost goods and money,” said a source on Sunday (Nov. 4).

Chronologically, the two victims had an argument with tourists at the crime scene on Friday at 03:15. At that time, the victims called a taxi and would return to hotel where they stayed on Jalan Legian, Kuta.

The fight became increasingly heated when the unidentified tourist and his friends immediately attacked the victims.

“When the taxi arrived, the victim tried to save himself into the taxi. However, the perpetrators continued to attack him. Moreover, according to information, the perpetrators carried a hammer and

wheel lock. After the victim were helpless, the perpetrators fled,” said the source asking for anonymity.

As a result of the incident, Said suffered a torn wound on the head, arm, broken bone of left hand and torn wound on right hand. DENPASAR - Traditional games are almost extinct. Current children prefer to play with their gadgets. Actually, Bali has several types of traditional games. The data in the Denpasar Culture Agency indicate that Bali has at least 300 traditional games.

Today, the Denpasar municipality continues to explore the existence of traditional games because it is inseparable from the values of character education.

This topic was raised in a traditional game workshop at Bindu River on Monday (Nov. 5). It was opened by Chairman of the Indonesian Society for Recreational Sports Federation (FORMI) who is also the Head of the Denpasar Culture Agency, IGN Bagus Mataram. This workshop presented I Made Taro as a guest speaker.

“Mayor of Denpasar, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, mandated to preserve traditional games and make this activity a very appropriate moment in the human resource development through empowerment and improvement of achievement,” said IGN Bagus Mataram.

Bagus Mataram said the implementation of the workshop is a measure to initiate sincere care for cultural heritage, where one of which is traditional games. Teachers in the Denpasar City that participated in this workshop must disseminate to their students. “Results of this workshop must be disseminated to students because in the future the traditional games we have will be contested,” he said.

According to him, the Denpasar municipality continues to play an active role in developing achievement sports, educational sports and recreational sports. Definitely, this traditional games or sports growing and developing in the community must be continuously preserved,” he added.

SYDNEY - A man has died after being mauled by a shark in the third such attack in two months at a popular tourist site on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, authorities said Tuesday.

Rescue workers said the man suffered serious wounds to his legs and one arm in the attack Monday afternoon in the Whitsunday islands off Queensland state.

The 33-year-old died after being airlifted to a mainland hospital, the national broadcaster ABC said.

The attack came less than two months after an Australian woman and a 12-year-old girl were bitten and seriously hurt by sharks within 24 hours of each other in the same area.

Those attacks in one of Australia’s most well-known tourist areas led authorities to set out baited lines to capture and kill several sharks.

Shark attacks are rare in the Whitsundays -- a collection of spectacular tropical islands at the heart of the Barrier Reef -- with the last encounter reported to be eight years ago, according to the ABC. (afp)

DENPASAR - The draft Regional Regulation on Balinese Traditional Cultural Attractions is still under discussion of the committee in the Bali House of Representatives. In simple terms, this regulation is made to protect cultural attractions and distinguish between sacred and profane cultural attractions. In this case, only the profane culture can be performed for tourism.

“Then, there are dimensions of space and time. In other words, every activity related to cultural attractions, at temple for instance, only applies within the temple area,” said Chairman of the Special Committee for the Regulation of the Balinese Traditional Cultural Attractions, I Wayan Gunawan, amid the discussion of the regional regulation draft in the parliamenta-

ry building on Monday (Nov. 5).

Gunawan exemplified that tabuh rah (cockfighting) is currently still being formulated whether it is classified into a habit, tradition or customs considering it has been indeed inherent in religious ceremonies so it needs to be preserved. Of course, it will be eliminating the element of gambling or tajen.

BEIJING - As one of the world’s richest men and most active philanthropists, Bill Gates usually has his hands full. Just not with poop.

So it came as a surprise when the founder of Microsoft brandished a jar of human waste at a forum on the future of the toilet in Beijing on Tuesday.

The stunt was an effort to draw attention to a problem affecting developing countries around the world: not enough toilets.

“In places without sanitation you have got way more than that,” Gates said, pointing to the feces inside the clear canister resting on a table.

“And that’s what kids when they are out playing, they are being exposed to all the time, and that’s why we connect this not just with quality of life, but with disease and death and with malnutrition,” he told attendees.

The billionaire said more than half of the world’s population suffers without clean, comfortable sanitation facilities.

“When you think of things that are basic right up there with health and enough to eat, you think that having a reasonable toilet certainly belongs on that list,” Gates said.

Gates has previously used shock tactics to draw attention to his disease-battling efforts.

In 2009, he loosed mosquitoes at a Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) Conference in California to make a point about the deadly sting of malaria -- waiting a minute or so before assuring the audience the liberated insects were disease-free.

Gates was in Beijing on Tuesday for the “Reinvented Toilet Expo”, a forum hosted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation showcasing various cutting edge toilet technology in lieu of sewers, making them easier and cheaper to install the devices.

The world’s number two economy is in the midst of a drive to improve its notoriously malodorous bathrooms, a campaign President Xi Jinping has dubbed the “toilet revolution.”

“China has made great progress in improving health and sanitation for millions of people,” Gates said.

“China has an opportunity to launch a new category of innovated non-sewered sanitation solutions that will benefit millions of people worldwide.”

According to UNICEF, 892 million people worldwide have no choice but to defecate in the open.

India’s government says its public health drive has slashed the number of people in the country forced to defecate in the open from 550 million in 2014 to less than 150 million today. (afp)

‘Miracle’ as New Zealand baby rescued from sea

WELLINGTON - A New Zealand baby was plucked from the ocean as he floated past a fisherman in a rescue hailed as “miraculous” by water safety experts, who warned the accident could easily have ended in tragedy.

Gus Hutt was preparing for an early morning fish when he saw what appeared to be a doll bobbing past him in a rip current at Matata Beach in the North Island’s Bay of Plenty.

“I thought he was just a doll,” Hutt told the Whakatane Beacon of the incident on October 26. “So I reached out and grabbed him by the arm, even then I still thought it was just a doll.

“His face looked just like porcelain, with his short hair wetted down, but then he let out a little squeak and I thought ‘oh God this is a baby and it’s alive’.”

It turned out the “doll” was 18-month-old Malachi Reeve, who had opened the zip of his sleeping parents’ tent, then made his way out of a beachside campsite and into the water, where a current caught him.

Hutt, a local, said he had altered his usual routine slightly and was about to cast off about 100 metres (110 yards) from his normal spot on the shoreline when the object floated by.

“He was floating at a steady pace with a rip in the water. If I hadn’t been there, or if I had just been a minute later I wouldn’t have seen him,” Hutt said.

“He was bloody lucky, but he just wasn’t meant to go. It wasn’t his time.”

Malachi’s parents were alerted and rushed to the camp reception, where mother Jessica Whyte found her boy “purple, cold and looking smaller than usual”.

But after treatment from paramedics he was given the all clear and Whyte said he was unaffected by his ordeal.

“He’s himself. Maybe he’ll be more aware of water, not run into beaches. But he’s definitely himself,” she told the Stuff news website.

She said the toddler had been fascinated by the sea the previous day and must have woken up early to explore.

Water Safety New Zealand chief executive Jonty Mills said Malachi’s case may have ended happily but it showed the dangers children face around water.

“This is a pretty miraculous survival story,” he told AFP. “It really is just a matter of luck that the fisherman was in the right place at the right time and was able to pull the child out of the water.”

He said seven pre-schoolers drowned last year in New Zealand and there had been three fatalities involving children under five so far in 2018.

“It takes less than a minute for a child to drown,” he said.

“The only way to keep babies and toddlers safe around water is constant active adult supervision at all times.” (afp)

BUSINESS US services firms’ growth slipped in Oct. after record Sept.

WASHINGTON - U.S. services firms expanded at a slightly slower rate in October, after achieving a record pace in September in a sign of the economy’s strength and endurance.

The Institute for Supply Management, which is composed of purchasing managers, reported Monday that its services index dipped to 60.3 in October, down from 61.6 in September. Readings above 50 point to further growth. Services companies have been expanding for 105 months, or nearly nine years.

“I was surprised it came in as strong as it did,” said Anthony Nieves, chair of the ISM’s services survey committee.

Seventeen services industries said that they grew last month, with just educational services saying they contracted.

The U.S. economy has been energized this year after the deficit-funded tax cuts signed into law by President Donald Trump at the end of 2017. Economic growth has accelerated with an annualized gain of 3.5 percent in the third-quarter and 4.2 percent in the second-quarter. Employers added a solid 250,000 jobs in October as the unemployment rate held at a half-century low of 3.7 percent.

The business activity and employment components of the index fell in September, although they still registered growth and suggest the expansion — already the second longest in U.S. history — will continue.

Multiple companies surveyed for the index said they’re experiencing strong demand, but several firms also warned that tariffs could weigh on their businesses in the coming months. Private services companies account for more than 70 percent of U.S. nonfarm jobs. (ap)

South Korean companies that export to Iran: The U.S. also agreed to uphold a special transaction system set up in October 2010 after discussions between Washington and Seoul that essentially allows South Korea to take Iranian oil as payments for its goods.

With the U.S. upholding the transaction system, South Korean companies will be able to continue exporting non-sanctioned items to Iran, officials said.

India has a similar arrangement whereby Iran can use crude oil to pay for food and other necessities.

For both Japan and China, Iran

is a significant but not huge supplier. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Qatar and Kuwait export more crude oil to Japan than Iran. China is the singlelargest importer of crude oil, at about 9 million barrels a day, and also of Iranian oil, so cutting off all shipments could have jolted global markets.

But China has diversified and relies on Iran for less than 10 percent of its total crude oil imports, with Saudi Arabia, Angola, Russia, Oman and Iraq providing more than half, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. (ap)

days and practiced for 2.5 hours a day. They know the Kakul Mas Dance Studio from his father, the late I Ketut Kantor. One of their lecturers had learned mask dance directly from the late I Ketut Kantor.

Their lecturer then sent the students to get the fundamentals of Balinese classical dance from the successor of the late I Ketut Kantor.

These students did not only learn to dance, but also tried to express themselves by learning to dance, make a mask and know more about Balinese life. In practicing the dance, they are trained directly by Ketut Wirtawan, Wayan Artawa, Nyoman Juniati, Tut Nik and Wayan Darmawan.

The class of making a mask is provided by Ketut Wirtawan.

“Although the schedule is held by their campus, there are also students attending the program repeatedly on their personal account,” he said.

A machine makes water out of air - Watergen’s atmospheric water generator

Drinking water for homes, buildings and whole villages

Watergen’s medium scale generator GEN-350 can produce an average of 600 liters of clean drinking water per day. It comes with a built-in reservoir and a water treatment system. In Vietnam, with its high air humidity, the machine can extract even more water, says Watergen President Michael Mirilashvili: “Here in Vietnam, in the three locations where we tested the technology, it performed even better than we expected.”

A large scale unit can extract up to 5000 liters per day. It is designed

to provide water to approximately 2500 people per day, and it can be installed on a rooftop and connected directly to the building’s water grid. A small generator, GENNY, can provide drinking water for homes and offices, it generates 25 to 30 liters per day. The machines only need electric infrastructure to operate, and can be installed anywhere.

Watergen wants to take its technology even further: “Our scientists already developed the technology that implements the Watergen core technology inside cars, busses, trains and all kinds of transportation”, Mirilashvili says. The running vehicle will generate the power for the atmospheric water generator, to provide drinking water on the go anywhere at any time. Mirilashvili also points out that the use of atmospheric water generators could drastically reduce plastic waste.

Access to safe water during droughts

In Vietnam, a country still suffering from water shortages and

poor water quality, the demand for clean water solutions is increasing, says Ambassador of Israel to Vietnam, Nadav Eshcar: “Vietnam is one of the countries most affected by global warming, suffering from droughts in the South and Central region in recent times. In Israel, we already have solutions, which we are introducing here”.

Watergen’s generator has already been in use in numerous countries around the globe, in India, the United States, Latin America, China, Russia and several African countries, to name a few.

Qatar warns of ‘long-lasting’ impact of Gulf crisis DOHA - Qatar’s ruler said Tuesday “crises pass” but warned of “long-lasting” scars from a diplomatic dispute that has seen Doha isolated by Saudi Arabia and its allies for more than a year.

In an annual address to the nation, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani pointedly called on other Gulf states to respect Qatar’s sovereignty and not “interfere” in other countries’ affairs.

“History teaches us that crises pass, but their mismanagement may leave behind long-lasting effects,” Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said.

Once allies, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have imposed a near-total embargo on Qatar since June 2017 over allegations the emirate supports radical Islamist groups and seeks closer ties with Riyadh’s arch-rival Tehran.

Qatar denies the charges, accusing its neighbours of seeking regime change.

The emir said the Qatari economy had not been damaged by the boycott, adding that the country would retain its position as the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.

“Our oil and gas exports have not been affected by the blockade,” he said.

“The state has been keen on fulfilling all its obligations under the existing contracts and has concluded several long-term contracts, the latest of which was with Petro China.”

The crisis has thrown into the spotlight Qatar’s preparations for the 2022 World Cup, which have been plagued with allegations of labour rights violations.

Sheikh Tamim said the preparations were “not easy” but the state was continuing to provide funding for international football’s showpiece tournament.

JAKARTA — The “black box” data recorder from a crashed Lion Air jet shows its airspeed indicator malfunctioned on its last four flights, investigators said Monday, just hours after distraught relatives of victims confronted the airline’s co-founder at a meeting organized by officials.

National Transportation Safety Committee chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono said the problem was similar on each of the four flights, including the fatal flight on Oct. 29 in which the plane plunged into the Java Sea minutes after taking off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

Erratic speed and altitude on the plane’s previous flight, from Denpasar on Bali to Jakarta, were widely reported and “when we opened the black box, yes indeed the technical problem was the airspeed or the speed of the plane,” Tjahjono told a news conference.

“Data from the black box showed that two flights before Denpasar-Jakarta also experienced the same problem,” he said.

“In the black box there were four flights that experienced problems with the airspeed indicator.”

Indonesian investigators, the plane’s manufacturer, Boeing, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board are formulating a more specific inspection for Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes related to the airspeed problem, Tjahjono said.

“If there are urgent findings to be delivered, we will convey them to the operators and to the manufacturer,” he said.

Lion Air has said a technical problem with the jet was fixed after problems with the Bali to Jakarta flight.

Investigator Nurcahyo Utomo said investigators need to review maintenance records, including what problems were reported, what repairs were done including whether components were replaced, and how the repairs were tested before the 2-month-old plane was declared airworthy. “Currently we are looking for the cause of problem,” he said “Whether the trouble came from its indicator, its measuring device or sensor, or a problem with its computer. This is what we do not know yet and we will find it out,” he said.

At the meeting with family members, Tjahjono had said that information downloaded from the jet’s flight data recorder was consistent with reports that the plane’s

speed and altitude were erratic after takeoff on its final flight. Searchers are still trying to locate the cockpit voice recorder.

Rusdi Kirana, Lion Air’s co-founder, was not invited to speak by Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, who moderated the meeting between relatives and the officials who are overseeing the search effort and accident investigation.

But he stood and bowed his head after angry and distraught family members demanded that Kirana, who with his brother Kusnan Kirana founded Lion Air in 1999, identify himself. “Lion Air has failed,” said a man who identified himself as the father of passenger Shandy Johan Ramadhan, a prosecutor in a district on the island where the flight was headed.

“I want Mr. Rusdi Kirana and his team to pay attention,” he said. “Since the time of the crisis, I was never contacted by Lion Air. We lost our child, but there was no empathy that Lion Air showed to us.”

After the meeting, Kirana left in a hurry, avoiding questions from reporters.

Many families face an agonizing wait for missing relatives to be identified.

Police medical experts have received nearly 140 body bags of human remains and have identified 14 victims.

Relatives questioned why the plane had been cleared to fly after suffering problems on its Bali to Jakarta flight on Oct. 28 that included a rapid descent after

takeoff that terrified passengers.

“Lion Air said the problem was fixed, is it true the problem was cleared?” asked Bambang Sukandar, whose son was on the flight. “If not, technicians in charge must be responsible,” he said. “The law is absolute, because they have stated that the plane was cleared to take off again.

These bad technicians must be processed by law to prevent plane accidents from continuing in Indonesia.”

Tjahjono said the large amount of small debris and the relatively small area the debris was found in showed the plane hit the water at a very high speed.

“The plane was intact when it plunged to the sea, it did not explode in the air, and the aircraft engine was running when it touched the water at high RPM — it’s marked by the loss of all blades of the turbine,” he said.

The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 on board. Lion Air is one of Indonesia’s youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fastgrowing region of more than 600 million people. (ap)

This central farmer’s is conveniently located halfway along the western side of the BaturitiSingaraja route, and between two of Bedugul’s landmark attractions, namely the Beratan Lake with its iconic Ulun Danu Beratan lakeside temple, and the Eka Karya Botanic Gardens.

The baby-faced southpaw with a blond quiff, who is only a few months out of his teens, was barely known outside his home country before the shock announcement of his New Year’s Eve fight with the unbeaten Mayweather.

But the 20-year-old from Chiba near Tokyo is considered something of a prodigy in Japanese fighting circles and began learning karate at the tender age of five.

Like Mayweather, he has never been beaten, boasting a 27-0 record as a professional kickboxer with 20 wins by knockout. He has four wins out of four in mixed martial arts.

Nasukawa won the world junior karate championship when he was a fifth grader and shifted to kickboxing a year later, according to his official website.

He made his professional kickboxing debut at the age of 16 and became bantamweight oriental rules world champion a year later.

Promoters RIZIN said that Nasukawa -- or “Ninja Boy” as they dubbed him -- had “become one of the most popular fighters in Japan, and perhaps the best combat sports prospect the country has ever seen.”

There are still no details as to under what rules the fight will be held -- whether kicks will be

allowed, for example -- but Nasukawa claimed after the bout was announced he had “a punch that boxers don’t have”.

“I don’t care what the rules are.

I want to be the man who changes history. I’ll do that with these fists, with one punch -- just watch,” said Nasukawa.

- ‘Gym rat’ Even Mayweather acknowledged that Nasukawa was “an unbelievable talent”, praising his lithe, “gym rat” physique.

“He’s very special, he’s fast, he’s strong. I’m older now and when it comes to experience, I have it on my side. He has youth on his side and he’s going to bring a lot of excitement,” said the 41-year-old American.

Nasukawa now weighs 56.8 kilogrammes and is also giving four inches away in height to Mayweather, who won world titles in five different weight classes.

“Our weight class is different, but it means nothing to me,” said Nasukawa.

According to his official site, Nasukawa is good with his hands in other areas than punching, saying he is a fan of knitting and sewing -- as well as indulging in traditional Japanese “sento” baths.

LOS ANGELES - Klay Thompson scored 27 points as the Golden State Warriors stretched their winning streak to eight games with a 117-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.

Thompson was one of five Warriors players in double-digits as the NBA champions overcame a sluggish start to wrap up a comfortable victory at Oracle Arena.

After an evenly contested first half finished at 58-58, the Warriors produced a breathless burst of scoring in the third quarter to pull clear.

They outscored the Grizzlies by 34 points to 15 in the third, effectively killing off the game going into the fourth.

The victory leaves the Warriors on top of the Western Conference with a 10-1 record.

Kevin Durant had 22 points for the Warriors while Stephen Curry had 19.

In Denver, the Nuggets maintained

their hot streak with Jamal Murray scoring 48 points in a 115-107 win over the Boston Celtics.

Point guard Murray drained five three-pointers in his points haul while laying on four assists and hauling down five rebounds.

The victory saw Denver improve to 9-1 to keep pace with the Warriors in the West.

Boston’s scoring was led by Kyrie Irving with 31 points while Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum chipped in with 15 points apiece.

Irving meanwhile was incensed by Murray’s late attempt at a three-pointer as the clock ran out in the fourth quarter, grabbing the ball and hurling it into the stands in disgust at the 21-year-old’s perceived lack of respect.

Sanchez gives Man United options at Juventus

Madrid were drifting towards a 0-0 draw at their Santiago Bernabeu home and, searching for inspiration, it was Bale´s number 11 that came up.

He departed to whistles from the fans even if Solari, perhaps deliberately, spared him being being replaced directly by Vinicius Junior. Nevertheless, the 18-year-old came on two minutes later and made the difference, his shot deflecting in to give Madrid the lead. “Another day, Gareth will score,” Solari said. “And everyone will celebrate.”

But those quickest to criticise Bale are circling again ahead of the trip to Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Wednesday. Support for Vinicius has been intense and Bale is seen as the one standing in the way. “Vinicius puts Bale in trouble,” read the frontpage of AS on Monday.

One week into his still-temporary tenure at Real, Solari is confronting the familiar problem of how to get the best out of Bale, now the team´s most potent threat.

This season, free of both injury and Cristiano Ronaldo, he started well, posting four goals and two assists from his first six games.

But an adductor problem last month, combined with the team´s crash under Julen Lopetegui, disrupted his rhythm. He has returned but is still not fully fit. His performances have lacked edge.

Still, the number of times Bale has been substituted has been a surprise, not least because his with-

drawals have often come in the moments when Madrid should need him most.

In his last nine matches, Bale has been taken off seven times, five of those when his team were chasing a goal. Once, with the game at 0-0 against Atletico Madrid, he was replaced due to injury. The other four - while level with Athletic Bilbao and Valladolid, and trailing Barcelona and Alaves - the reasoning was less obvious.

Those calling for Vinicius to take Bale´s spot perhaps overlook the Welshman´s 24 goals in 41 appearances last season. Two of them won Real Madrid the Champions League final in May. Vinicius, signed from Flamengo for 45 million euros in the summer, is a precocious talent but he has fewer appearances for Real in his career than Bale has goals since August.

“Footballers cannot fight against what goes on around them,” Solari said. “The media, the fans, they are excited about Vinicius and that is fantastic, but his virtues are as evident as his weaknesses and his age. He has had almost no time to mature.”

If Solari believes the excitement around the teenager is worth harnessing, perhaps the Brazilian could slot into a front three alongside Bale, rather than instead of him.

Benzema´s early form has also dipped but he plays the role of an attacking pivot as well as anyone. Marco Asensio, who started against Valladolid, has been quiet while Isco is still regaining fitness after appendix surgery.

Finding the right combination, and extracting more from Bale, is likely to be top of Solari´s priorities. Discounting the Copa del Rey win over Melilla, who play in Spain´s third tier, four of Madrid´s last five goals have come from their left-back, central defender and an own-goal. “It’s a very bad patch we’ve gone through,” said Sergio Ramos on Saturday.

Club president Florentino Perez could yet be tempted into the transfer market in January, particularly after UEFA abolished their rule on players being cup-tied in European competitions. Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski or Eden Hazard are no longer restricted like before.

But for Solari, the time is now. Beat Plzen on Wednesday and even a draw away to Celta Vigo this weekend might earn him the job until the end of the season.

A lack of alternatives means Perez would do well to look again in the summer, as long as Solari can keep them ticking over in the meantime. To do it, he will need goals, and Bale. (afp)

Alexis Sanchez has endured a torrid start to his Manchester United career but hinted at better things to come with an impressive display in a central role ahead of the Champions League match against Juventus.

The injured Romelu Lukaku missed the 2-1 win at Bournemouth on Saturday and Marcus Rashford started on the bench as Jose Mourinho opted for a three-man forward line, with Anthony Martial and Juan Mata deployed either side of Sanchez.

The former Arsenal man was instrumental in United’s first-half equaliser, setting up Martial, and will be disappointed to have been substituted towards the end of the game.

The match, won by substitute Rashford in injury time, was a rare high point for the Chile international, who has struggled to find his feet since arriving at Old Trafford in January -- it was his first league start since September 22.

Following the much-needed win against Bournemouth, Mourinho praised Sanchez and spelt out his

preferred system, saying he did not need a traditional centre-forward to lead his attack.

“The way I like to play is with three attacking players where there is not a clear definition of the winger as a winger,” he said, adding that he likes wide men with a striker’s appetite.

“And I always had that in my team, with the wingers scoring a lot of goals, sometimes even more goals than the striker,” he said.

Embattled Bayern hunt Thiago replacement

Bayern Munich are struggling to fill the creative hole left by Thiago Alcantara’s injury as they host AEK in the Champions League on Wednesday trying to secure a last 16 berth with trouble brewing for head coach Niko Kovac.

Bayern can reach the knockout stages if they beat the Greek champions AEK at Munich’s Allianz Arena and Benfica lose at Ajax in the other Group E match.

However, Bayern have been struggling for creativity since Thiago tore ankle ligaments ten days ago and Joshua Kimmich, usually a right-back, has struggled to replace him in the central midfield role.

Kimmich lost 14 of his 16 challenges for the ball and several passes went astray in Saturday’s lethargic 1-1 draw against Freiburg, which left Bayern third in the league table, four points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Kovac has other central midfield options to replace Thiago against AEK in James Rodriguez, Renato Sanches or Leon Goretzka.

However, bigger problems are brewing off the pitch with pundits warning Kovac is in danger of losing his dressing room. “The coach is measured by results and not everyone is behind Niko Kovac,” ex-Bayern and Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaeus told Sky. “That is dangerous.” German magazine Kicker on Monday claim senior players Thomas Mueller, Mats Hummels, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are all unhappy with Kovac’s coachings style.

The main problem seems to be rotating Bayern’s star-studded squad, leaving Mueller and Hummels discontented with their amount of playing time.

Robben was left fuming after being taken off in Saturday’s draw against Freiburg, the eighth time he has been taken off in 13 matches this season. Bayern’s attack is failing to fire and Kovac seems to be at a loss for words how to fix the problem.

“We lack the power to punch forward. We can’t break through at the moment as defences are closing us down,” he lamented.

“Things also seem difficult in the middle. “It’s clear to me that from a playing perspective, this is not what we expected. “Everything is now being questioned (by the media) - which I can understand.”

League defeats to Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach have seen Bayern take just 20 points from the first 10 league games -- their worst haul since the 2010/11 season, when Dortmund won the title.

Kovac is clearly not the only senior figure feeling the heat. “Don’t ask me such stupid questions,” fumed director of sport Hasan Salihamidzic, who then stormed off when reporters asked if Kovac’s job will be safe if Bayern lose at Dortmund on Saturday.

time Rashford, Lukaku, Alexis for example. But today Romelu was not available and we thought that Alexis could do what he did.

“What he did, he had a good assist, he had some mobility, he created some problems but then in the second half I knew that by having the two brothers on the bench, Rashford and (Jesse) Lingard, I knew that the brothers could come in and also make an impact.”

United now travel to Juventus for another date with former favourite son Cristiano Ronaldo, two weeks after they were outplayed during a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford that left them five points adrift of the Italian champions in Group H. Despite Mourinho’s stated preference for a multi-dimensional attack, keeping Lukaku out of the starting line-up will be tricky, with the manager proving loyal to his muscular front man.

The Belgium international, who has not found the net for the club since mid-September, is not

the only United forward who has gone off the boil, with Rashford also struggling despite his goal at the weekend.

Martial’s goals have been papering over the cracks during United’s recent mini-recovery, with the Frenchman earning the manager’s trust at last.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Rashford should be given a run in the starting line-up, even though he said it is not clear what his best position is yet.

“You look at Lukaku. Lukaku’s goalscoring record is up there, it’s fantastic, he scores goals,” added the TV pundit. “But in the best teams you need more than that.

“You need to be able to bring other people into play, you need to be able to complement other players in your team, things have to be set up off you.

“At the moment, I see in a Man Utd shirt that some things break down in Lukaku. And that affects other players in the team, like (Paul) Pogba and Lingard, who want to play off people.” (afp)

Embattled Bayern hunt Thiago replacement

Bayern Munich are struggling to fill the creative hole left by Thiago Alcantara’s injury as they host AEK in the Champions League on Wednesday trying to secure a last 16 berth with trouble brewing for head coach Niko Kovac.

Bayern can reach the knockout stages if they beat the Greek champions AEK at Munich’s Allianz Arena and Benfica lose at Ajax in the other Group E match.

However, Bayern have been struggling for creativity since Thiago tore ankle ligaments ten days ago and Joshua Kimmich, usually a right-back, has struggled to replace him in the central midfield role.

Kimmich lost 14 of his 16 challenges for the ball and several passes went astray in Saturday’s lethargic 1-1 draw against Freiburg, which left Bayern third in the league table, four points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

However, bigger problems are brewing off the pitch with pundits warning Kovac is in danger of losing his dressing room. “The coach is measured by results and not everyone is behind Niko Kovac,” ex-Bayern and Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaeus told Sky. “That is dangerous.” German magazine Kicker on Monday claim senior players Thomas Mueller, Mats Hummels, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are all unhappy with Kovac’s coachings style.

The main problem seems to be rotating Bayern’s star-studded squad, leaving Mueller and Hummels discontented with their amount of playing time.

Robben was left fuming after being taken off in Saturday’s draw against Freiburg, the eighth time he has been taken off in 13 matches this season. Bayern’s attack is failing to fire and Kovac seems to be at a loss for words how to fix the problem.

“We lack the power to punch forward. We can’t break through at the moment as defences are closing us down,” he lamented.

“Things also seem difficult in the middle. “It’s clear to me that from a playing perspective, this is not what we expected. “Everything is now being questioned (by the media) - which I can understand.”

League defeats to Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach have seen Bayern take just 20 points from the first 10 league games -- their worst haul since the 2010/11 season, when Dortmund won the title.

Kovac is clearly not the only senior figure feeling the heat. “Don’t ask me such stupid questions,” fumed director of sport Hasan Salihamidzic, who then stormed off when reporters asked if Kovac’s job will be safe if Bayern lose at Dortmund on Saturday.

The baby-faced southpaw with a blond quiff, who is only a few months out of his teens, was barely known outside his home country before the shock announcement of his New Year’s Eve fight with the unbeaten Mayweather.

But the 20-year-old from Chiba near Tokyo is considered something of a prodigy in Japanese fighting circles and began learning karate at the tender age of five.

Like Mayweather, he has never been beaten, boasting a 27-0 record as a professional kickboxer with 20 wins by knockout. He has four wins out of four in mixed martial arts.

Nasukawa won the world junior karate championship when he was a fifth grader and shifted to kickboxing a year later, according to his official website.

He made his professional kickboxing debut at the age of 16 and became bantamweight oriental rules world champion a year later.

Promoters RIZIN said that Nasukawa -- or “Ninja Boy” as they dubbed him -- had “become one of the most popular fighters in Japan, and perhaps the best combat sports prospect the country has ever seen.”

There are still no details as to under what rules the fight will be held -- whether kicks will be

allowed, for example -- but Nasukawa claimed after the bout was announced he had “a punch that boxers don’t have”.

“I don’t care what the rules are.

I want to be the man who changes history. I’ll do that with these fists, with one punch -- just watch,” said Nasukawa.

- ‘Gym rat’ Even Mayweather acknowledged that Nasukawa was “an unbelievable talent”, praising his lithe, “gym rat” physique.

“He’s very special, he’s fast, he’s strong. I’m older now and when it comes to experience, I have it on my side. He has youth on his side and he’s going to bring a lot of excitement,” said the 41-year-old American.

Nasukawa now weighs 56.8 kilogrammes and is also giving four inches away in height to Mayweather, who won world titles in five different weight classes.

“Our weight class is different, but it means nothing to me,” said Nasukawa.

According to his official site, Nasukawa is good with his hands in other areas than punching, saying he is a fan of knitting and sewing -- as well as indulging in traditional Japanese “sento” baths.

LOS ANGELES - Klay Thompson scored 27 points as the Golden State Warriors stretched their winning streak to eight games with a 117-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.

Thompson was one of five Warriors players in double-digits as the NBA champions overcame a sluggish start to wrap up a comfortable victory at Oracle Arena.

After an evenly contested first half finished at 58-58, the Warriors produced a breathless burst of scoring in the third quarter to pull clear.

A machine makes water out of air - Watergen’s atmospheric water generator

Drinking water for homes, buildings and whole villages

Watergen’s medium scale generator GEN-350 can produce an average of 600 liters of clean drinking water per day. It comes with a built-in reservoir and a water treatment system. In Vietnam, with its high air humidity, the machine can extract even more water, says Watergen President Michael Mirilashvili: “Here in Vietnam, in the three locations where we tested the technology, it performed even better than we expected.”

A large scale unit can extract up to 5000 liters per day. It is designed

to provide water to approximately 2500 people per day, and it can be installed on a rooftop and connected directly to the building’s water grid. A small generator, GENNY, can provide drinking water for homes and offices, it generates 25 to 30 liters per day. The machines only need electric infrastructure to operate, and can be installed anywhere.

Watergen wants to take its technology even further: “Our scientists already developed the technology that implements the Watergen core technology inside cars, busses, trains and all kinds of transportation”, Mirilashvili says. The running vehicle will generate the power for the atmospheric water generator, to provide drinking water on the go anywhere at any time. Mirilashvili also points out that the use of atmospheric water generators could drastically reduce plastic waste.

Access to safe water during droughts

In Vietnam, a country still suffering from water shortages and

poor water quality, the demand for clean water solutions is increasing, says Ambassador of Israel to Vietnam, Nadav Eshcar: “Vietnam is one of the countries most affected by global warming, suffering from droughts in the South and Central region in recent times. In Israel, we already have solutions, which we are introducing here”.

Watergen’s generator has already been in use in numerous countries around the globe, in India, the United States, Latin America, China, Russia and several African countries, to name a few.

It is also being listed as one of the Technology Pioneers in 2018 by World Economic Forum.

The water generator presented at the event “Israel in the heart of Hanoi” is a gift from Watergen to the Hanoi People’s Committee.

It will be on display in Ly Thai To square in the city center for a month, allowing Hanoi’s citizens to take a sip from the sky.

Qatar warns of ‘long-lasting’ impact of Gulf crisis DOHA - Qatar’s ruler said Tuesday “crises pass” but warned of “long-lasting” scars from a diplomatic dispute that has seen Doha isolated by Saudi Arabia and its allies for more than a year.

In an annual address to the nation, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani pointedly called on other Gulf states to respect Qatar’s sovereignty and not “interfere” in other countries’ affairs.

“History teaches us that crises pass, but their mismanagement may leave behind long-lasting effects,” Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said.

Once allies, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have imposed a near-total embargo on Qatar since June 2017 over allegations the emirate supports radical Islamist groups and seeks closer ties with Riyadh’s arch-rival Tehran.

Qatar denies the charges, accusing its neighbours of seeking regime change.

The emir said the Qatari economy had not been damaged by the boycott, adding that the country would retain its position as the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.

“Our oil and gas exports have not been affected by the blockade,” he said.

“The state has been keen on fulfilling all its obligations under the existing contracts and has concluded several long-term contracts, the latest of which was with Petro China.”

The crisis has thrown into the spotlight Qatar’s preparations for the 2022 World Cup, which have been plagued with allegations of labour rights violations.

Sheikh Tamim said the preparations were “not easy” but the state was continuing to provide funding for international football’s showpiece tournament.

JAKARTA — The “black box” data recorder from a crashed Lion Air jet shows its airspeed indicator malfunctioned on its last four flights, investigators said Monday, just hours after distraught relatives of victims confronted the airline’s co-founder at a meeting organized by officials.

National Transportation Safety Committee chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono said the problem was similar on each of the four flights, including the fatal flight on Oct. 29 in which the plane plunged into the Java Sea minutes after taking off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

Erratic speed and altitude on the plane’s previous flight, from Denpasar on Bali to Jakarta, were widely reported and “when we opened the black box, yes indeed the technical problem was the airspeed or the speed of the plane,” Tjahjono told a news conference.

“Data from the black box showed that two flights before Denpasar-Jakarta also experienced the same problem,” he said.

“In the black box there were four flights that experienced problems with the airspeed indicator.”

Indonesian investigators, the plane’s manufacturer, Boeing, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board are formulating a more specific inspection for Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes related to the airspeed problem, Tjahjono said.

“If there are urgent findings to be delivered, we will convey them to the operators and to the manufacturer,” he said.

Lion Air has said a technical problem with the jet was fixed after problems with the Bali to Jakarta flight.

Investigator Nurcahyo Utomo said investigators need to review maintenance records, including what problems were reported, what repairs were done including whether components were replaced, and how the repairs were tested before the 2-month-old plane was declared airworthy. “Currently we are looking for the cause of problem,” he said “Whether the trouble came from its indicator, its measuring device or sensor, or a problem with its computer. This is what we do not know yet and we will find it out,” he said.

At the meeting with family members, Tjahjono had said that information downloaded from the jet’s flight data recorder was consistent with reports that the plane’s

speed and altitude were erratic after takeoff on its final flight. Searchers are still trying to locate the cockpit voice recorder.

Rusdi Kirana, Lion Air’s co-founder, was not invited to speak by Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, who moderated the meeting between relatives and the officials who are overseeing the search effort and accident investigation.

But he stood and bowed his head after angry and distraught family members demanded that Kirana, who with his brother Kusnan Kirana founded Lion Air in 1999, identify himself. “Lion Air has failed,” said a man who identified himself as the father of passenger Shandy Johan Ramadhan, a prosecutor in a district on the island where the flight was headed.

“I want Mr. Rusdi Kirana and his team to pay attention,” he said. “Since the time of the crisis, I was never contacted by Lion Air. We lost our child, but there was no empathy that Lion Air showed to us.”

After the meeting, Kirana left in a hurry, avoiding questions from reporters.

Many families face an agonizing wait for missing relatives to be identified.

Police medical experts have received nearly 140 body bags of human remains and have identified 14 victims.

Relatives questioned why the plane had been cleared to fly after suffering problems on its Bali to Jakarta flight on Oct. 28 that included a rapid descent after

takeoff that terrified passengers.

“Lion Air said the problem was fixed, is it true the problem was cleared?” asked Bambang Sukandar, whose son was on the flight. “If not, technicians in charge must be responsible,” he said. “The law is absolute, because they have stated that the plane was cleared to take off again.

These bad technicians must be processed by law to prevent plane accidents from continuing in Indonesia.”

Tjahjono said the large amount of small debris and the relatively small area the debris was found in showed the plane hit the water at a very high speed.

“The plane was intact when it plunged to the sea, it did not explode in the air, and the aircraft engine was running when it touched the water at high RPM — it’s marked by the loss of all blades of the turbine,” he said.

The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 on board. Lion Air is one of Indonesia’s youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fastgrowing region of more than 600 million people. (ap)

BUSINESS US services firms’ growth slipped in Oct. after record Sept.

WASHINGTON - U.S. services firms expanded at a slightly slower rate in October, after achieving a record pace in September in a sign of the economy’s strength and endurance.

The Institute for Supply Management, which is composed of purchasing managers, reported Monday that its services index dipped to 60.3 in October, down from 61.6 in September. Readings above 50 point to further growth. Services companies have been expanding for 105 months, or nearly nine years.

“I was surprised it came in as strong as it did,” said Anthony Nieves, chair of the ISM’s services survey committee.

Seventeen services industries said that they grew last month, with just educational services saying they contracted.

The U.S. economy has been energized this year after the deficit-funded tax cuts signed into law by President Donald Trump at the end of 2017. Economic growth has accelerated with an annualized gain of 3.5 percent in the third-quarter and 4.2 percent in the second-quarter. Employers added a solid 250,000 jobs in October as the unemployment rate held at a half-century low of 3.7 percent.

The business activity and employment components of the index fell in September, although they still registered growth and suggest the expansion — already the second longest in U.S. history — will continue.

Multiple companies surveyed for the index said they’re experiencing strong demand, but several firms also warned that tariffs could weigh on their businesses in the coming months. Private services companies account for more than 70 percent of U.S. nonfarm jobs. (ap)

The waiver also is a relief for

South Korean companies that export to Iran: The U.S. also agreed to uphold a special transaction system set up in October 2010 after discussions between Washington and Seoul that essentially allows South Korea to take Iranian oil as payments for its goods.

With the U.S. upholding the transaction system, South Korean companies will be able to continue exporting non-sanctioned items to Iran, officials said.

India has a similar arrangement whereby Iran can use crude oil to pay for food and other necessities.

For both Japan and China, Iran

is a significant but not huge supplier. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Qatar and Kuwait export more crude oil to Japan than Iran. China is the singlelargest importer of crude oil, at about 9 million barrels a day, and also of Iranian oil, so cutting off all shipments could have jolted global markets.

But China has diversified and relies on Iran for less than 10 percent of its total crude oil imports, with Saudi Arabia, Angola, Russia, Oman and Iraq providing more than half, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. (ap)

DENPASAR - Traditional games are almost extinct. Current children prefer to play with their gadgets. Actually, Bali has several types of traditional games. The data in the Denpasar Culture Agency indicate that Bali has at least 300 traditional games.

Teachers in the Denpasar City that participated in this workshop must disseminate to their students. “Results of this workshop must be disseminated to students because in the future the traditional games we have will be contested,” he said.

According to him, the Denpasar municipality continues to play an active role in developing achievement sports, educational sports and recreational sports. Definitely, this traditional games or sports growing and developing in the community must be continuously preserved,” he added.

SYDNEY - A man has died after being mauled by a shark in the third such attack in two months at a popular tourist site on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, authorities said Tuesday.

Rescue workers said the man suffered serious wounds to his legs and one arm in the attack Monday afternoon in the Whitsunday islands off Queensland state.

The 33-year-old died after being airlifted to a mainland hospital, the national broadcaster ABC said.

The attack came less than two months after an Australian woman and a 12-year-old girl were bitten and seriously hurt by sharks within 24 hours of each other in the same area.

Those attacks in one of Australia’s most well-known tourist areas led authorities to set out baited lines to capture and kill several sharks.

Shark attacks are rare in the Whitsundays -- a collection of spectacular tropical islands at the heart of the Barrier Reef -- with the last encounter reported to be eight years ago, according to the ABC. (afp)

In simple terms, this regulation is made to protect cultural attractions and distinguish between sacred and profane cultural attractions. “Then, there are dimensions of space and time. In other words, every activity related to cultural attractions, at temple for instance, only applies within the temple area,” said Chairman of the Special Committee for the Regulation of the Balinese Traditional Cultural Attractions, I Wayan Gunawan, amid the discussion of the regional regulation draft in the parliamenta-

ry building on Monday (Nov. 5).

BEIJING - As one of the world’s richest men and most active philanthropists, Bill Gates usually has his hands full. Just not with poop.

So it came as a surprise when the founder of Microsoft brandished a jar of human waste at a forum on the future of the toilet in Beijing on Tuesday.

The stunt was an effort to draw attention to a problem affecting developing countries around the world: not enough toilets.

“In places without sanitation you have got way more than that,” Gates said, pointing to the feces inside the clear canister resting on a table.

“And that’s what kids when they are out playing, they are being exposed to all the time, and that’s why we connect this not just with quality of life, but with disease and death and with malnutrition,” he told attendees.

The billionaire said more than half of the world’s population suffers without clean, comfortable sanitation facilities.

“When you think of things that are basic right up there with health and enough to eat, you think that having a reasonable toilet certainly belongs on that list,” Gates said.

Gates has previously used shock tactics to draw attention to his disease-battling efforts.

In 2009, he loosed mosquitoes at a Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) Conference in California to make a point about the deadly sting of malaria -- waiting a minute or so before assuring the audience the liberated insects were disease-free.

Gates was in Beijing on Tuesday for the “Reinvented Toilet Expo”, a forum hosted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation showcasing various cutting edge toilet technology in lieu of sewers, making them easier and cheaper to install the devices.

The world’s number two economy is in the midst of a drive to improve its notoriously malodorous bathrooms, a campaign President Xi Jinping has dubbed the “toilet revolution.”

“China has made great progress in improving health and sanitation for millions of people,” Gates said.

“China has an opportunity to launch a new category of innovated non-sewered sanitation solutions that will benefit millions of people worldwide.”

According to UNICEF, 892 million people worldwide have no choice but to defecate in the open.

India’s government says its public health drive has slashed the number of people in the country forced to defecate in the open from 550 million in 2014 to less than 150 million today. (afp)

‘Miracle’ as New Zealand baby rescued from sea

WELLINGTON - A New Zealand baby was plucked from the ocean as he floated past a fisherman in a rescue hailed as “miraculous” by water safety experts, who warned the accident could easily have ended in tragedy.

Gus Hutt was preparing for an early morning fish when he saw what appeared to be a doll bobbing past him in a rip current at Matata Beach in the North Island’s Bay of Plenty.

“I thought he was just a doll,” Hutt told the Whakatane Beacon of the incident on October 26. “So I reached out and grabbed him by the arm, even then I still thought it was just a doll.

“His face looked just like porcelain, with his short hair wetted down, but then he let out a little squeak and I thought ‘oh God this is a baby and it’s alive’.”

It turned out the “doll” was 18-month-old Malachi Reeve, who had opened the zip of his sleeping parents’ tent, then made his way out of a beachside campsite and into the water, where a current caught him.

Hutt, a local, said he had altered his usual routine slightly and was about to cast off about 100 metres (110 yards) from his normal spot on the shoreline when the object floated by.

“He was floating at a steady pace with a rip in the water. If I hadn’t been there, or if I had just been a minute later I wouldn’t have seen him,” Hutt said.

“He was bloody lucky, but he just wasn’t meant to go. It wasn’t his time.”

Malachi’s parents were alerted and rushed to the camp reception, where mother Jessica Whyte found her boy “purple, cold and looking smaller than usual”.

But after treatment from paramedics he was given the all clear and Whyte said he was unaffected by his ordeal.

“He’s himself. Maybe he’ll be more aware of water, not run into beaches. But he’s definitely himself,” she told the Stuff news website.

She said the toddler had been fascinated by the sea the previous day and must have woken up early to explore.

Water Safety New Zealand chief executive Jonty Mills said Malachi’s case may have ended happily but it showed the dangers children face around water.

“This is a pretty miraculous survival story,” he told AFP. “It really is just a matter of luck that the fisherman was in the right place at the right time and was able to pull the child out of the water.”

He said seven pre-schoolers drowned last year in New Zealand and there had been three fatalities involving children under five so far in 2018.

“It takes less than a minute for a child to drown,” he said.

“The only way to keep babies and toddlers safe around water is constant active adult supervision at all times.” (afp)

ZUHAI - China unveiled on Tuesday a replica of its first permanently crewed space station, which would replace the international community’s orbiting laboratory and symbolises the country’s major ambitions beyond Earth.

The 17-metre (55-foot) core module was a star attraction at the biennial Airshow China in the southern coastal city of Zhuhai, the country’s main aerospace industry exhibition.

Outside, China’s J-10 fighter jet and J-20 stealth fighter wowed spectators as they zoomed across Zhuhai’s sky. Back inside, the country displayed its fleet of drones and other military hardware.

Crowds gathered around the cylindrical space station module representing the living and working quarters of the Tiangong -- or “Heavenly Palace” -- which will also have two other modules for scientific experiments and will be equipped with solar panels.

Three astronauts will be permanently stationed in the 60-tonne orbiting lab, which will enable the crew to conduct biological and microgravity research.

Assembly is expected to be completed around 2022 and the station would have a lifespan of around 10 years.

The International Space Station -- a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan -- has been in operation since 1998 but is due to be retired in 2024.

China will then have the only space station in orbit, though it will be much smaller than the ISS which weighs 400 tonnes and is as large as a football pitch.

The country announced in May

that the lab would be open to “all countries” to conduct science experiments.

“There is no doubt that China will use its station in a similar way as the ISS partners are using their outpost: research, technology and as a stepping-stone for deep-space exploration,” said Chen Lan, analyst at GoTaikonauts.com, a website specialised in the Chinese space programme.

Research institutes, universities, and public and private companies have been invited to propose projects.

Some 40 plans from 27 countries and regions have been received, according to state media.

The European Space Agency has sent astronauts to China to receive training in order to be ready to work inside the Chinese space station once it is launched.

“I’m sure over time China will be successful developing partnerships,” said Bill Ostrove, space analyst with US-based Forecast International consultancy.

“Many countries, and increasingly private companies and universities, have space programmes, but cannot afford to build their own space station,” he said.

“The ability to put payloads and experiments on a human spaceflight platform is extremely valuable.”

Beijing is pouring billions into its military-run space programme, with plans to send humans to the Moon in the near future.

Citing China as a threat, US President Donald Trump has launched plans to create a new “Space Force” to give his country dominance over rivals in space.

- Diverse space market -

But China’s space programme has encountered some glitches.

A space lab dubbed Tiangong-1 disintegrated as it plunged back to Earth in early April, two years after it ceased functioning.

Chinese authorities denied that the lab -- which was placed in orbit in September 2011 as a testing ground for the permanent station -- was out of control.

A second lab, the Tiangong-2, was launched into orbit in 2016.

“Despite a lot of talk of the opposite, the United States remains the most dominant power in space right now,” Ostrove said.

“The most likely scenario for the future is that China will emerge as one of the major space powers,” he said.

But Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan and India will continue to play “major roles” in space exploration, while private firms are becoming increasingly important in the sector, Ostrove added.

“The space market is becoming more diverse,” he said, “so it will be difficult for one or two countries or companies to dominate the field in the way the US and Soviet Union did during the Cold War.” (afp)

THE Californian electric scooter business Bird is launching a pilot service on London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

It is illegal to ride powered scooters on public roads or pavements in the UK but Bird hopes to get the law changed within 12 months.

The company, which operates in around 40 American cities, believes that its pilot scheme - on private land - will demonstrate the usefulness of this hop on, hop off form of transport and its environmental benefits.

The scooters are unlocked with an app, and will only be available between 07:00 and 21:00.

They will then be collected and charged overnight, and Bird says that will mean that the problems with theft, vandalism - and latenight drunks - which have afflicted some bike-sharing schemes, will be avoided.

I had a go and after a wobbly start found the scooter an easier ride than expected, though rounding a corner presented a challenge.

And while I was happy enough tootling along a path across the park, I’m not so sure I’d enjoy sharing one of London’s busy highways with lorries, cars and bikes - nor I suspect would they be too tolerant of a swarm of scooters.

But Bird’s UK and Nordics chief Richard Corbett says that in Paris and Amsterdam, where it is already operating, the scooters have quickly found a place in the urban transport mix and shown they can

be safe.

By making a big noise about this small pilot scheme the Californian company hopes to build momentum towards getting the law changed, so that it can start a commercial operation on London’s streets.

Mr Corbett seems certain that the regulators and lawmakers will move fast:”It’s a journey that we have to start and today’s the first step, but I’m confident that within the next 12 months we should have regulations changing.”

That seems very optimistic.

Having tangled with Uber and its “move fast and break things philosophy”, London’s regulators are likely to be cautious about this latest impatient American tech firm.

Then there is the question of the business model.

Users will pay £1 ($1.30) to unlock a scooter and then 20p per minute. That will be reasonably cheap for the short distances in the Olympic Park, albeit more costly than the free shuttle bus taking people to Stratford station.

If it does get approval to operate in London, users may baulk at paying £5 for a 20-minute ride.

Still, Bird can afford to lose money for quite a while. This summer it raised $300m (£230m) at a reported valuation of $2bn.

Maybe it is the future of short hop transport - or perhaps the Silicon Valley venture capitalists have lost touch with the reality of how ordinary mortals move across cities. (IBP/net)

Municipal police ask entrepreneurs to make statement

MANGUPURA — The Badung Municipal Police ordered businessmen alleged to belong to Chinese mafia syndicate to make a statement. In the letter, the judicial team asked if they will be found to employ foreign workers without permission they must be ready to close their business premises.

Although the ten businesses have obtained complete permits, IGAK Suryanegara emphasized if during the inspection they are found to employ foreign workers without permit, they should be ready to close their business premises.

According to him, even though they only rename the business, the entrepreneurs must keep reporting to the government and submitting the permit. Moreover, the items sold are different. “One management and network must still make a reporting because the goods sold are different,” he said.

Previously, IGAK Suryanegara gave them a chance to complete their licensing as long as the permit has not yet been issued, and all the business activities at the location had to be suspended. If after the provision of time limit

they still do not submit their permit at all, according to the SOP, they will be given the first reprimand with the validity of seven days. If this reprimand is not addressed, the second reprimand will be issued having the period of seven days. If this reprimand is still ignored as well, the third reprimand will be issued with validity for three days.

“If within three days there is no intention (for submitting the permit), then we will file this case to judicial session to make a decision for sealing the business premises,” he explained.

Moreover, Suryanegara added if his authority found any foreign workers having no permit of Foreign Worker Employment (IMTA), his authority with the Industry and Labor Agency will hand over the case the Immigration Office for further processing.

“The measure taken can be in the form of repatriation or deportation to their home country,” he concluded.

As reported, there are 12 businesses having been checked for completeness of their licenses when following up the issue of Bali destination sold cheaply in China. The businesses are located on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Nusa Dua, Jalan Parigata, Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai Kedonganan, and Jalan Sunset Road, Jalan Dewi Sri, Jalan Sunset Road, Benoa Square, and Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. MANGUPURA — Two Australian citizens, namely Mohamad Said, 31, and Ahmed Elgammal, 28, were beaten by four people in a taxi so they were battered in front of a restaurant on Jalan Raya Seminyak, Kuta, on Friday (Nov. 2). In addition, the victims claimed to have lost their goods.

“The victim suffered bruising, torn wounds all over the body and fractured left hand. The actions were allegedly committed by local people and foreigners. The victims lost goods and money,” said a source on Sunday (Nov. 4).

Chronologically, the two victims had an argument with tourists at the crime scene on Friday at 03:15. At that time, the victims called a taxi and would return to hotel where they stayed on Jalan Legian, Kuta.

The fight became increasingly heated when the unidentified tourist and his friends immediately attacked the victims.

“When the taxi arrived, the victim tried to save himself into the taxi. However, the perpetrators continued to attack him. Moreover, according to information, the perpetrators carried a hammer and

Related to this matter, Wayan Wijana, Operations Manager of the Uluwatu Temple Courtyard Attraction, confirmed the presence of the dance and gamelan class on Sundays at the Wantilan of Uluwatu Temple organized by the Uluwatu customary village ashram. With such activities, if there are tourists wishing to take part in the class, they will be facilitated.

KEDONGANAN is a coastal village on the southern tip of the Island of Bali being very well known as fish producing village. However, in the past ten years this region has developed into one of the tourist resorts getting very popular for its seafood.

Kedonganan village has two coasts with their respective attractions, namely Kedonganan Beach, white sand and the west coast sunset as well as the beauty of mangrove forests on the east coast.

MANGUPURA - In order to preserve local customs, culture and the arts through the ashram activities, young people of Pecatu customary village are taught the arts like Balinese dance and gamelan music. These activities are regularly carried out in the outermost courtyard of the Uluwatu Temple on Sundays.

Other than becoming a tourist attraction, this kind of activity is also expected to be able to educate or provide understanding for visitors.

So far, tourists only know Balinese dance through the performance, but the process from the beginning they don’t understand. For this reason, they will see in person the process how children are learning to dance and play gamelan. They will understand how Balinese culture looks like. “Dancing starts from this process. Road recycle asphalt

UTILIZATION of the road asphalt recycle is very important to be applied in Bali. It is considering the overlay technique having been applied so far greatly impacts on the height of the road. In addition, the engineers in Bali face difficulties in the matters of land.

On that account, this recycling method is expected to be a solution for future green construction. “This should be done in the future. In Bali, the last recycling method was ever conducted in 2010 for the Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra at Kusamba,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Road Development Association (HPJI) of Bali Chapter, Nusakti Yasa Wedha, amid the seminar related to road development technology in Wisma Bima, Kuta, on Monday (Nov. 5).

His organization through APJI has not been able to target how many ways can apply this recycle method in Bali. All this time, there

has been no target for recycling.

For Bali, Nusakti regretted if this recycling method will not be implemented. The road section in urban areas whose land is already minimal will certainly make buildings and shops sink or lower than the road if recycling method is not applied.

Actually many people have owned the knowledge on this recycling method, but it has not been implemented yet. He admitted there are very few managers and contractors having this recycling equipment. “In Indonesia, this method has been widely applied.

But in Bali it indeed has not. So far the average road sections in Bali are still quite good, and only a few roads have been damaged,” he said.

By applying this recycling method, cost savings can be reduced to reach 33 percent when compared to other methods. Indeed, this method should be continuously talked about. (edi)

The event will last for two days from Saturday (Nov. 17) to Sunday (Nov. 18) entitled “Coastal Area of Kedonganan.”

LONDON - Say You’ll Be There: Best-selling 90s girl band the Spice Girls promise to give fans what they really, really want on a UK reunion tour next year.

The band -- minus pop star-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham -- released details of a comeback tour, which will see them play Wembley Stadium, Britain’s biggest venue.

In a video shared on the band’s newly created Twitter account, the four remaining members staged a mock news broadcast to confirm rumours of the tour. Beckham, also known as Posh Spice, later posted a photo of the foursome on social media alongside a statement.

“I won’t be joining my girls on stage again but being in the Spice Girls was a hugely important part of my life and I wish my girls so much love and fun as they go back on tour,” she wrote on Instagram.

The pop phenomenon’s announcement sparked celebration from fans on social media, including from British singer Adele who shared a throwback childhood photo of herself posing excitedly in front of magazine posters of the band on her bedroom wall.

“This is how I feel right now! I am ready,” she added on Instagram.

The band’s official Twitter account, which promised a “new generation of girl power” was flooded with a frenzy of posts from nostalgic fans.

“The Spice Girls performing in my home town!

I need to sit down. I can’t breathe!!” tweeted Wez from Sunderland.

“I’m already packing my Union Jack dress and platform shoes, see you there,” another fan, Vicky, added. Jessica Morgan joked on Twitter: “My life depends on successfully purchasing a Spice Girls ticket.”

The tour will take in six British cities next year, including Manchester on June 1, the Scottish capital Edinburgh a week later and culminating at Wembley on June 15.

Ahead of the announcement, Melanie Brown (also known as Mel B and Scary Spice) left the door open to Beckham’s possible involvement.

“It’s just the four of us that are fully confirmed, but you know, Vic might join us at some point,” she told Britain’s ITV network.

“She’s got a full-on life with all of her work commitments and her fashion line and her kids, so, she’s just kind of not committing just yet,” Brown added.

The group stormed to worldwide fame in 1996 after the release of their first single “Wannabe”, spreading their message of girl power, eventually going on to sell 85 million albums worldwide. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - Idris Elba has received an “ego boost” after being named the sexiest man alive by US celebrity magazine People.

The British actor and star of The Wire, Luther and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom tweeted a picture of the front cover and said he was “honoured and thankful”, while also urging people to vote in the midterm elections.

Families hold mass prayer at sea for Indonesia jet crash victims

Hundreds of grieving relatives prayed Tuesday at the spot where a Lion Air jet plunged into the sea as revelations over the jet’s malfunctioning air speed indicator raised fresh questions about the cause of the accident.

Tearful mourners aboard a pair of Indonesian navy vessels tossed bouquets and scattered flower petals into the Java Sea off the country’s north coast where the brand new jet crashed last week, killing all 189 people on board.

Search teams have filled some 164 body bags with remains found after the devastating crash, but only 27 victims have been identified so far, police said.

The Boeing 737-Max 8, one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes, crashed on October 29 just

12 minutes into a one-hour flight from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city on Sumatra island.

Flight JT610 sped up as it suddenly lost altitude and then vanished from radar shortly after takeoff. Divers have retrieved the flight data recorder but are still hunting for the plane’s cockpit voice recorder. There is still no answer as to what caused the crash, with a preliminary report expected at the end of the month.

But the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee said Monday that flight recorder

data has so far revealed the plane’s air speed indicator was not working properly on its last four journeys, including the fatal flight.

The glitch had been repeatedly serviced and Lion Air’s technical team declared the plane to be airworthy.

“The technical problems on the three previous flights should have been treated as a repeat problem that cannot be fixed the same way each time,” aviation expert Alvin Lie told AFP. A more thorough check should have been done followed by a test

flight before the plane was put back into service, he added. “The air speed indicator is a part of vital flight instruments. If it’s broken then it’s a ‘no-go’ for the plane,” Lie said. Gerry Soejatman, another aviation analyst, said finding the cockpit voice recorder was critical for knowing how the crew reacted to the malfunction and what role it played in the crash.

“The air speed indicator plays a very important role, but (that) alone is not enough to cause a plane to crash,” he said.

It is not clear how much training the Lion pilots had on the new jet -- which only went into service in August -- or whether the problems could affect other Boeing 737

MAX planes.

Budget carrier Lion has been plagued by safety concerns and customer complaints over unreliable scheduling and poor service.

The carrier has been involved in a number of incidents including a fatal 2004 crash and a collision between two Lion Air planes at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport.
