Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan win big at country music awards NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Singer Miranda Lambert won four Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday, and Luke Bryan took home the top honor as entertainer of the year as U.S. politics and the absence of Taylor Swift played supporting roles in the televised ceremony.

Lambert, 30, who led all nominees with nine nods, earned her record fifth female vocalist of the year award.

“I don’t know what to say. I can’t believe I’m standing here. I can’t believe this is my life,” an emotional Lambert said accepting the award she has won five consecutive years. “Damn it!

I cry every time.”

The Texan also won CMA Awards for album of the year for “Platinum,” single of the year for the wistful “Automatic” as well as sharing the musical event of the year award with Aussie singer Keith Urban for “We Were Us.” Bryan, 38, earned his first CMA on the back of five hits from his 2013 album “Crash My Party.”

“I have long sought to have one of these in my hands,” Bryan told reporters.

The 48th annual CMA awards show, which competes with the springtime’s Academy of Country Music Awards for prestige and television audience, is one of the top promotional events on the country music calendar. Winners are chosen by the CMA’s 6,000 members.

Blake Shelton, Lambert’s husband, also won his fifth consecutive male vocalist of the year award.

Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow” won the songwriters’ award song of the year, sharing the award with fellow songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.

Noted for its gay-friendly message and references to marijuana, “Follow Your Arrow” is a thematic outlier in the conservative-leaning country music world.

LOS ANGELES - Forty-nine year-old “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr has welcomed a second child with his wife Susan, a baby girl named Avri, he announced Wednesday.

“After 9 months of intensive development, Team Downey is pleased to announce our 2014 fall/winter project,” the A-list star joked on his Facebook page, adding that she was born early Tuesday.

“Principal photography commenced 11-14 and will continue until she says, ‘Dad! You are embarrassing me...I’m 30, this has gotta stop,’” the veteran actor added.

Her full name is Avri Roel Downey, she weighs seven pounds, spans 20 inches and “is accompanied by a variety of Susan’s traits that have seemingly overwritten my ‘junk DNA,’” he wrote.

“I’ll post pics here + there when I’m not too busy staring,” Downey Jr quipped.

The new arrival is the couple’s second child, joining two-and-a-half year-old Exton Elias. Downey Jr also has a 21-year-old son, Indio, from a previous marriage.

Downey Jr, Hollywood’s highestpaid actor, is currently starring in “The Judge,” in which he plays a lawyer who returns to his hometown to lay his mother to rest but also to bury the hatchet with his father.

Economy slows down to 2.78 percent in Q3

DENPASAR - The Balinese economy in the third quarter of 2014 grew at a slower pace than in the previous quarter, contracting 0.03 point to 2.78 percent.

The third-quarter growth was fueled by all sectors, with the service sector recording the highest growth of 8.05 percent, chief of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) office in Bali

province Panusunan Siregar said.

The agricultural sector meanwhile grew by 0.03 percent, which is the lowest among other sectors.

The third-quarter economic

growth expanded by 6.53 percent year-on-year, fueled by all economic sectors, he said.

The construction sector recorded the highest growth of 10.61 percent

and the agricultural sector posted the lowest growth of 1.86 percent.

Cumulatively, the Balinese economy grew by 6.08 percent till the third quarter of 2014.

Panasunan said the nominal value of Bali’s regional gross domestic product (PDRB) reached Rp27.10 trillion based on the current prices in the third quarter of

2014, and Rp9.40 trillion based on the constant prices of 2000.

On the component use side, household consumption and exports still contributed the greatest chunk of the PDRB in the third quarter of 2014.

He said the economic slowdown in the third quarter was caused by low household and government consumption.

SEMARAPURA - After the fire hitting the SMPN 3 Banjarangkan junior high school, the equipment of the Klungkung Fire Brigade and safety equipment of the personnel reaped a public criticism. Many people judged the equipment and personnel protection while on duty were very minimal whereas the risk of working in the field was very high.

More seriously, the risk assurance of fire brigade personnel was not available.

Even, local community should help clog the leaks from the base to another tip of the hose. Cherry trees withered due to drought Bali Post

Section Head of the Fire Brigade, Wayan Toya, admitted the matter, Wednesday (Nov 5).

When being on duty to extinguish fire at the SMPN 3 Banjarangkan, many people had a pity on the firefighters of Klungkung. Amidst the spirit of the personnel, the existing fire truck was very limited. Even, a local resident claimed that it was in agony. The Klungkung Fire Brigade only had three fire trucks.

Even, one of them was still out of order and being repaired. “For the time being, only two trucks can be operated,” he said.

As a result, when a fire occurred they could not do much.

Sometimes it was forced to ask for a help from the fire brigade of Gianyar, Bangli and Karangasem.

When extinguishing fire, the hose used to spray water got a lot of leaks. Thus, the spray of water from the hose to the hotspots was not optimal.

AMLAPURA - Evidently the endeavor of Karangasem County to plant cherry trees is in vain. Dozens of cherry trees planted in line 11 or Jalan Veteran have been withered due to drought. Even, some of them dried up and died without any leaves. Allegedly the different climatic condition of Karangasem from Japan has caused the death of the cherry trees.

When asking for confirmation about the cherry tree, the Head of Karangasem Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, I Made Suama, admitted that some cherry trees planted in the Jalur Sebelas had been withered or dead. He reasoned the poor condition of the cherry trees planted by the government occurred due to different weather condition from its natural habitat.

“Probably it is not appropriate with the weather in Indonesia. So, most of the cherry trees died,” said I Made Suama.

Due to many cherry trees died, Suama admitted that his party had withdrawn some of them. On that account, his party asserted that some pots indeed contained no cherry trees. However, it did not necessarily disappear, but had been withdrawn.

“Some cherry trees were indeed withdrawn because they died,” said I Made Suama.

As condition in the field, a number of cherry trees fenced in by bamboo pieces looked dry, like unkempt. “It has always been like that. I often passed here, but the flowers remained like that. They did not want to grow, and the leaf is rare. Probably they lack for water so that they indicated such a growth,” said a resident of Jalan Untung Suropati, I Ketut Sulendra, Thursday. The leaves of cherry tree planted two years ago did not grow and only the stems looked to line. Even, some of them already disappeared. (dwa)

Buleleng Police arrest subsidized fuel trafficker Bali Post

SINGARAJA - Within the past few days, the fuel scarcity in Buleleng was taken advantage of by individuals to get profits by breaking the law related to subsidized fuel. The Criminal Investigation Unit of Buleleng Police detained a suspect of subsidized fuel trafficking.

The suspect was prooven to be guilty of misusing the transportation of the subsidized fuel and fuel transport activities without being equipped a transportation business permit.

The suspect is named Made Putu Artawan aka MPA, 60, from Kanginan hamlet, Menyali village, Sawan subdistrict. The suspect was arrested by police on Sunday (Nov 2) around 3:30 a.m. The arrest of the suspect was based on public information obtained by police which staed that the petrol station on Jalan Ahmad Yani Singaraja often sold subsidized diesel fuel and gasoline to someone using a pick-up truck which did not have the required paper work.

The Chief of the Buleleng Police Criminal Investigation Unit, I Ketut Adnyana TJ, along with the consent of the Buleleng Police Chief Benny Arjanto said that based on field investigatios, police found the pickup truck with license plate DK 9609 UY coming from the East to the West.

Thhe truck pulled into the petrol station to look for Pertamax and Premium fuel. The suspect MPA was known to have purchase 104 liters of subsidized diesel fuel worth

IDR 577,500. which were put into four jerrycans. Then, the suspect bribed the petrol station attendant for IDR 15,000 to allow this illegal trasaction to take place.

The total amount of money spent by the suspect reached IDR 592,500. At the scene the suspect could not escape and was immediately escorted to the Buleleng Police station for further investigation.

“The suspect was unable to present a permit for the fuel purchase, so we brought the suspect to the police station for further investigation. The suspect planned to first collect and then sell the fuel, taking advanttage of fuel price hike,” said Adnyana TJ. This middle-aged man was arrested by police and the evidence consisting of eight jerrycans with 240 liters of Premium fuel, four jerrycans with 105 liters of diesel fuel, a unit of Suzuki pickup truck with license plate DK 9609 UY, key, vehicle registration and two receipts of purchase we seized. “I bought fuel by using jerrycan to put in my car and often bought at the petrol station on Jalan Ahmad Yani and Jalan Gajah Mada. I bought every week and it was also allowed by the petrol station attendants,” said the suspect MPA. For his action, the suspect was charged with the Article 55 of the Law No.22/2001 about Oil and Gas, with the sanction of imprisonment for six years and a maximal fine of IDR 60 billion, or a maximal punishment of four years and a maximal fine of IDR 40 billion. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAO PAULO — A bevy of top Brazilian models lent their star power to day three of Sao Paulo fashion week, but Wednesday’s uncontested catwalk sensation was Darth Vader.

It’s not every day the black capeclad “Star Wars” villain struts his stuff on the runway, flanked by two stormtroopers packing serious firepower.

The “Star Wars”-themed fallwinter 2015 collection at Triton was the ostensible reason behind Vader’s catwalk cameo, with models sporting

black hooded Obi-Wan Kenobi capes over their mini dresses and leggings fitted with lozenge-shaped appliques that evoked an urban take on a stormtrooper’s plastic armor.

Despite the “Star Wars” star power at Triton, the most applauded collection of the day, clothes-wise, was Iodice’s tribal chic, floppy little dresses

that quivered with fringe and swam in graphic prints. The Santa Fe sophisticate look at Sacada was another winner, with its pastel hued cocoon coats covered in geometric, vaguely Native American designs.

Sao Paulo’s fashion week, the most important sartorial event in Latin America, continues Thursday.

NEW YORK — From Hillary Rodham Clinton to Hugh Jackman to Mikhail Baryshnikov, luminaries of the fashion, entertainment and media worlds packed a Manhattan church on Monday for the private funeral of legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta.

Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, joined actors Jackman and Matthew Broderick, newswomen Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer (with husband Mike Nichols) and Andrea Mitchell, dance great Baryshnikov, and designers Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Donna Karan and Tommy Hilfiger at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, along with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, photographer Annie Leibovitz, and supermodel Karlie Kloss.

De la Renta died on Oct. 20 at his Connecticut home at the age of 82, following a battle with cancer.

Jerry and Syd Shaw, who attended the funeral, said de la Renta worked

until the end.

“That was his life. He loved it. He loved working. He loved people,” Jerry Shaw said following the service.

The funeral, Syd Shaw said, truly reflected de la Renta’s life. “I think he would be overwhelmed because he had all kinds of people from all parts of his life,” she said.

The Dominican-born designer, famous for glamorous garments that combined intricate workmanship with luxurious materials, was as admired on Hollywood red carpets as he was at socialites’ soirees. Most recently, Amal Alamuddin wore a de la Rentadesigned dress when she married George Clooney at a lavish wedding in Venice.

Monday’s service lasted about one hour. According to the printed program, honorary ushers included the designer’s son, Moises de la Renta; TV newsman Charlie Rose, and singer Julio Iglesias. Readings were to be given

SAO PAULO - Stella McCartney on Wednesday launched an exclusive range for Brazilian consumers at Sao Paulo Fashion Week, saying she was targeting a “cool and sexy” market.

“For me, Brazilian women are cool and sexy I have to say, and they are definitely aware when it comes to fashion,” the 43-year-old designer said.

“I think they’re very much at the forefront of fashion,” said McCartney, daughter of Beatles legend Paul, as she launched the apparel for C&A. She added she was driven by a desire to take a sustainable and responsible approach to her work -- values she said came from her parents.

“I grew up in the countryside, on an organic farm, so I was very aware of the seasons of nature.

“So for me, when I went into fashion, I wanted to be responsible, and have a different take on luxury fashion, where I would not work with fur or leather,” said McCartney, adding she wanted her collection to be affordable options for the buying public at large.

“I try to approach what I do in fashion in a sustainable and a responsible way, so not only in the materials that I use, but the way that I source and manufacture my product,” she said of a range priced between $35 and $150 and made from fabrics including cotton, viscose, lame and lace.

Working on collaborations such as her current one with the C&A chain

meant “pausing fast-fashion, just slowing it down for a moment, so that the consumer who maybe can’t afford our clothes can come and have a different experience with C&A.” McCartney said she saw her range as “quite timeless, so it’s fast-fashion -- but it’s meeting luxury in a way that you will have these garments, I hope, in the way they’re designed, in the way which we’ve sourced the highest (quality) materials we could with C&A. “I think what we have done here is a good example of what we can do with fast fashion. I think they will last you longer than normal fast-fashion,” said McCartney, adding she was “emotionally attached to everything I create.”

She told reporters fashion was “not just about luxury,” hence her collaboration with a high street store.

“I also worked with a lot of sustainable and environmentally friendly fabrics in this collaboration, so for me, it’s about doing fast-fashion in a way that just slows it down a little bit,” McCartney explained.

“C&A is an incredible brand. It’s been really exciting as we’ve worked together once before.

Much, but not all, of the collection is Brazil-made, with some items produced in Asia -- primarily China and India -- C&A vice president Paulo Correa said.

Correa noted McCartney had launched an exclusive Brazil range in 2011 “and it was very successful.”

Bali to host world pneumonia day campaign Antara

DENPASAR - Bali will host the World Pneumonia Day campaign on Friday (Nov. 7), at Niti Mandala Renon Field, Denpasar, to urge the people and government agencies to be heedful of the dangers of the disease.

“Let us save our children from the dangers of pneumonia and suppress the number of child death cases caused by the disease. As of now, pneumonia is still ranked fifth for the reason behind child deaths in the world,” Dr Putu Siadi Purniti, the chairman of the World Pneumonia Day Committee, stated.

The campaign urges parents to immediately bring their children who are suffering pneumonia to medical centers for further treatment.

DENPASAR - The Institute of National Aviation and Space (Lapan) said Indonesia needs space technology of remote sensing that could draw the map of the country’s marine potentials altogether and systematically.

“In order to back development of the maritime sector a technology is needed that could monitor the entire sea territory systematically,” Chief spokesman of Lapan Jasyanto said.

Jasyanto said remote sensing technology using satellite service would be effective to monitor and detect marine natural resources.

The technology could be used to spot ridges of rock and in planning development of the marine potentials for economy and tourism, he cited.

He added, with the remote sensing technology, the physical and biological aspects of the sea such as surface temperature and chlorophyll content could be detected.

Those elements are important to locate the potential fishing ground in the sea through the Indonesian fish catching potential zone (ZPPI).

“With the ZPPI, fishermen would be easy to find a location where there are many fishes,” he said.

Remote sensing is also important to get information about islands in outer areas for security purposes, he said.

“Monitoring of natural resources and sea security would be more efficient and effective as satellite could give information with wide coverage,” he said.

Development of remote sensing technology would be discussed in an international conference titled “Pan Ocean Remote Sensing Conference” (PORSEC) to be held by Lapan in cooperation with the state Udayana University in Denpasar from Nov. 4-7.

PORSEC is an organization dedicated to helping developing countries

to promote science especially in the application of remote sensing technology in the sea.

The conference which is held every two years attended by 400 participants from Indonesia and other countries -all professional in their remote sensing and representatives of space agencies like Lapan, JAXA (Japan), and NASA (the United States).

“Indonesia is a big maritime country. The condition forces the country to give much attention to marine and maritime affairs in line with one of the big visions of President Joko Widodo,” he said.

TANAUAN, Philippines — The Saavedras waited for death as Typhoon Haiyan tore their roof, knocked down walls and unleashed torrents of seawater below them.

All they could do was pray, say “I love you” one last time and take a picture. David Saavedra raised his cellphone in the chaos to snap a group selfie to record their final moments. He took it for his eldest sister in Manila, hoping to show that at the end, her family was together — even serene.

That explains his smile, incongruous against the wind-ripped scene and the terror-stricken faces of his younger sister, Veronica, and their mother. The picture was intended to go on top of David’s coffin, but instead it is a reminder of the family’s immense luck, and of the obligation they feel to help neighbors who weren’t nearly as fortunate when the massive typhoon hit Nov. 8, 2013.

More than 7,300 people died or went missing when Haiyan slammed the central Philippines, including the Saavedras’ laidback farming town of Tanauan, as one of the most ferocious typhoons ever to hit land. The monster storm displaced about 4 million people and turned a large swath of densely populated regions into a wasteland.

“I said ‘I love you’ to my parents because I felt at that time that it

was our last day alive,” Veronica Saavedra said in an interview in the family’s old house, now partially cleaned up and repaired. “I was so afraid I was trembling and I said, ‘Lord, if this is my last day, forgive me for everything.’”

The 21-year-old college student said even while praying, she was terrified by the loud hissing of the wind, and memories of the rising water hounded her sleep for months. The Saavedras — David, Veronica, their brother JR, their mother and their father — all survived. Three other siblings were in Manila, and one was in Kuwait.

Many other families had much different fates. In a nearby village, all but two members of a 45-member clan are buried in a mass grave.

When the rain and wind finally subsided hours after the storm hit, David, a 26-year-old accountant, left the cramped hallway on the second floor of the wood-and-concrete home where he and his family were huddled while hell broke loose. He saw bodies floating on the street outside. The next-door neighbors were drenched and shuddering on the second floor of their house, its walls gone. One paraplegic neighbor was clinging to a post near the roof of his house. Others were crying, many in shock.

“In just one click, everything can be snatched from you,” David said, tears welling in his eyes. “But the feeling that you are still alive after that is really overwhelming.”

CANBERRA, Australia — Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Thursday that he remained determined to secure a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to demand full cooperation in the investigation into the shooting down of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine.

“Once again it is clear from our audit just how much of that spending is not in compliance with the rules.”

The European Commission, the powerful executive branch of the 28nation EU, said the report showed its efforts to tackle misspending were “starting to pay off”.

The watchdog said the two most error-prone spending areas were regional policy, with a misspending rate of 6.9 percent, and rural development, on 6.7 percent, the auditor said.

It cited mistakes including a company claiming funds as a small business

when it was actually owned by a large firm; the managers of an airport project adding to a contract without letting other firms bid; and a farmer claiming a subsidy for grassland that was partly covered by bushes and trees.

The EU’s focus on a “use it or lose it” approach, instead of checking how well money was spent, is a “fundamental flaw in the design of much of the EU budget,” it added.

It said however that the figures were “not a measure of fraud, inefficiency or waste” but examined how EU money was not spent within the bloc’s rules.

Caldeira called for “more incentives to improve performance and to deliver value for money.”

The EU’s budget is a perennial source of debate at a time when the continent’s economy is in the doldrums and many member states face tough decisions on austerity.

The European Commissioner for the budget, Kristalina Georgieva, said the commission would do more to stop spending errors but said they had to be seen in “context”.

“I am pleased that the court’s audit findings show that last years’ trend of increasing error rates has been stopped,” she said.

She said the EU had to work with member states to improve the situation “without adding more costs and bureaucracy.”

At that time, the resident was breaking the abstinence prevailing at the temple,” she said.

Actually, explained Sutami, the resident was already aware of the abstinence, but he still spoke.

Shortly afterward he died in the temple area whereas he was not talking about bad things. What happened to her resident, said Sutami, did not just happen at that moment.

At least, the incident already happened about twice. “Such incidents made the local residents adhere to the abstinence prevailing at the temple,” she said.

Other than the abstinence to speak, local people also had another belief related to the Dalem Umbalan Temple. tently left her tray inside the temple.

When the owner tried to take it back into the temple area, the owner was made very surprised. Her tray made of woven palm leaf was seen to transform into a curled snake.

Suddenly, she was frightened and

did not dare to take it back.

Another story told that a housewife wanted to take back her left item in the innermost courtyard of the temple in the next morning.

MYIN HLUT, Myanmar — The small wooden boats leave the shores of western Myanmar nearly every day, overloaded with desperate Rohingya Muslims who are part of one the largest boat exoduses in Asia since the Vietnam War. Helping them on their way: Myanmar’s own security forces, who are profiting off the mass departure of one of the world’s most persecuted minorities by extracting payments from those fleeing. A report to be released Friday by the Bangkok-based advocacy group Fortify Rights, and reporting by The Associated Press, indicate the practice is far more widespread and organized than previously thought, with Myanmar naval boats going so far as to escort asylum seekers out sea, where larger ships operated by transnational criminal networks wait to pick them up.

“Myanmar authorities are not only making life so intolerable for Rohingya that they have to flee, but they’re also complicit in the process — they’re taking payments and profiting off their exodus,” said Matthew Smith, director of Fortify Rights.

Obama, who has repeatedly pointed to democratic reforms in Myanmar as a foreign policy bright spot, called President Thein Sein recently by telephone to express concerns about recent backslides.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation of 50 million that is still struggling to emerge from half a century of military rule, has an estimated 1.3 million Rohingya, and most are considered stateless.

Though many of their families arrived from Bangladesh generations ago, almost all have been denied citizenship by Myanmar and Bangladesh. In the last two years, attacks by Buddhist mobs have left hundreds dead and 140,000 trapped in camps where they live without access to adequate health care, education or jobs.

CAIRO — A bomb blast aboard a train traveling in the Nile Delta north of Cairo killed four people and wounded nine, security officials said on Thursday. They said the blast took place shortly before midnight on Wednesday and that two policemen were among those killed.

Also late Wednesday, three people were wounded when a homemade bomb went off aboard a commuter train in the Cairo suburb of al-Marg, said the officials. On Thursday morning in Cairo, a woman was slightly injured when a homemade explosive device went off near one of the city’s presidential facilities, the infrequently used alQuba palace, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for planting any of the three bombs, but the attacks bore the hallmarks of Islamic militants fighting the government of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, a generalturned-politician who took office in June, nearly a year after he led the military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Authorities have for years battled Islamic militants in the Sinai Peninsula, but the unrest there has escalated into a full-fledged insurgency since Morsi’s ouster in July last year. The attacks, mainly targeting security forces, have spread to the Nile Delta and Cairo itself.

The attacks in Cairo have mainly involved small, homemade bombs that cause few casualties. But they have still revealed meticulous planning and execution by the militants and exposed the inefficiency of the police.

One such attack involved three homemade bombs that went off less than 20 meters (yards) away from the walls of Cairo’s presidential Ittihadiya palace, where el-Sissi conducts business on daily basis. Two senior police officers were killed, one of whom was trying to defuse a bomb while in civilian clothes and without wearing protective gear.

NATO leader in Afghanistan vows continued support Associated Press

KABUL — The head of NATO paid an unannounced visit to Kabul on Thursday, where he vowed that the Western alliance would continue supporting the country after foreign combat troops withdraw at the end of the year.

“We are ending the combat mission and are starting a new chapter in which the future of Afghanistan is in the hands if the Afghan people,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

NATO has committed to continued funding for Afghan national forces of $4.1 billion annually and to an open-ended training and support mission to help the government combat a still-potent Taliban insurgency. Stoltenberg, who took over as the head of the alliance on Oct. 1, also visited a training center for Afghan special forces.

President Ashraf Ghani, who assumed office earlier this year following a protracted election dispute, accepted an invitation to attend a NATO ministerial meeting on Dec. 2. He said cooperation with the international community would focus on a wide range of non-security issues, including women’s rights, governance and environmental protection. “Give us a break,” he said, referring to the challenges facing his one-month-old government.

NATO and the United States are withdrawing combat forces from Afghanistan at the end of the year, after 13 years of fighting the Taliban. A residual force of up to 12,000 U.S. and NATO forces will remain to provide training and backup for Afghanistan’s 350,000 security forces.

The Taliban remain an imposing force in much of the country and continue to carry out near-daily attacks mainly targeting security forces. On Thursday police in the eastern Paktia province received the bodies of 10 civilians who had been shot dead, according to provincial police chief Gen. Zalmai Huryakhil. He said police did not know when or why the people were killed.

The bodies were brought to the police by local village elders because the security forces cannot operate in the area where the bodies were found.

INDONESIA Jokowi plans Rp1.2 trillion investment to revitalize cocoa plantations Antara

MAMUJU - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he would set aside Rp1.2 trillion for the revitalization of the country’s cocoa plantations.

The revitalization is in a bid to support the country’s ambition to become the world largest cocoa producer, Jokowi said during his visit to West Sulawesi, on Thursday.

“The revitalization is expected to take three to four years starting 2015,” he told cocoa farmers in Saletto in the district of Mamuju, West Sulawesi.

The president asked Minister of Agrarian affairs Ferry Mursidan to immediately prepare the certificate for the people’s plantations.

He also asked banks to help with credits for cocoa plantations.

He said he would encourage development of cocoa processing industry in cocoa production

centers.

He said in three years Indonesia should be the world’s largest producer of cocoa.

Currently the country is the third largest producer after the Ivory Coast and Ghana in Africa.

“For that purpose the farmers need to work the harder,” he said.

Earlier Jokowi inspected irrigation system in Beru-Beru, Mamuju and symbolically distributed the Healthy Indonesian cards, Smart Indonesian cards and Prosperous Family cards to a number of the villager. Coordinating Economic Minister Sofyan Djalil has submitted his wealth disclosure forms to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Thursday verifying that his total wealth is Rp52.8 billion and US$580,000.

Sofyan Djalil became the fourth minister who submitted their wealth disclosure forms to the KPK after Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi, Health Minister Nila Djowita Moeloek and Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman.

Djalil said that he had debt totaling Rp3.5 billion when recently buying a house located in Central Jakarta’s Menteng Dalam area but he refused to detail his wealth.

“I do not want to announce this. The KPK will do that. This is a publicly-accessible document. Please wait until the KPK processes and announces it. For your information, I have reported my wealth disclosure forms for five times,” he said.

JAKARTA - An Iranian oil and gas company said it is ready to supply crude oil to feed Indonesian oil refineries, an official said on Thursday.

Care taker Oil and Gas Director General Naryanto Wagimin said the Indonesian government welcomes the offer. “We will discuss that matter further in a working group,” Naryanto said after accompanying representative of the Iranian Energy Ministry to a meeting with the Energy and Mineral Resource Minister Sudirman Said.

He said the Iranian embassy said crude oil from Iran meets the specifications needed by the Cilacap oil refinery of the state oil and gas company PT Pertamina.

He said Iran also wants to renew talks on cooperation to build an oil refinery, negotiations on which halted recently. Under the scheme the refinery would be built in cooperation with Indonesia company with crude oil to be supplied from Iran.

“The minister is enthusiastic with the plan to build the refinery.

Therefore a working group would be formed,” he said.

As for the incentives asked by the

investor, discussion would be held further, he added.

“I have heard about an Indonesia investor wanting to build an oil refinery, but there was no progress made so far,” he said.

In 2007, Iran through its oil and gas state company National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) indicated interest in building an oil refinery with a processing capacity of 300,000 barrels of crude oil per day to cost around US$6 billion.

The plan dated back to a meeting between former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and former Iranian President Ahmadinejad.

The project was to be built in Bojanegara, Banten, in cooperation with Pertamina with NIORDC to have a 40 percent stake, Pertamina 40 percent and Malaysian Petrofield 20 percent.

The refinery would be operated by a joint venture company named PT Banten Bay Refinery. The project was already approved by the Oil and Gas Directorate General on 27 May, 2008 and the Capital Investment Coordinating Board on 27 November 2008.

Mercedes, Red Bull say small team rebellion would only hurt F1

Radical action from Formula 1’s small teams over Bernie Ecclestone’s failure to address cost issues would do more harm than good, insist leading team bosses. After a United States Grand Prix weekend where the smaller outfits whipped up talk of a strike - even though they never actually threatened it openly - there is pressure on Ecclestone to address the matter.

Talks between Ecclestone and Sauber, Force India and Lotus were scheduled for this week, amid hopes that an agreement could be reached by the Brazilian GP. Red Bull boss Christian Horner and Mercedes chief Toto Wolff have urged Ecclestone to prevent the current problems dragging on, and ensure the wild idea of a boycott does not become real. Wolff said: “I’m not into strikes - it’s kept me stranded with Air France and Lufthansa before. “So I don’t think a strike is what you do these days, and threatening to strike even less.

“I don’t think it would be good for Formula 1. That wouldn’t help

the smaller teams either. “It’s about sitting around the table, clearing the air, saying this is what we think should happen and then discussing it with the commercial rights holder.”

Horner believes a protest by the three teams would achieve nothing, and suggested that even talking about the idea was hurting F1’s reputation. “They are here to compete,” he said. “Force India is trying to beat McLaren. If they are sitting in the garage, they are not going to be going anywhere. That doesn’t work.

“And doing it publicly is the wrong way to do it. “What F1 has done during the last couple of weeks with the public slanging matches that have gone on are not good for the sport, because the sport should be focusing on what we have seen in America: good racing, wheel to wheel racing.

“The politics and the fiscal issues should be dealt behind closed doors, with the commercial rights holder, and get sorted.”

Second Romanian player gets 16-match ban Reuters

BUCHAREST - FC Viitorul Constanta centre back Alin Seroni has been banned for 16 matches for a reckless foul in a domestic match, the Romanian football federation’s (FRF) said late on Wednesday.

The punishment came a few hours after the FRF decided to ban FCM Targu Mures midfielder Gabriel Muresan for 16 matches following a violent tackle during his team’s 1-0 league win over champions Steaua Buchrast on Oct. 26.

Targu Mures’s general director Daniel Stanciu reacted angrily to Muresan’s punishment, saying other players had committed bad fouls but escaped serious bans.

Seroni was handed the heavy punishment following a poor challenge on Universi-

tatea Craiova’s Nicusor Bancu during a Romanian Cup match on Oct. 29.

Bancu suffered an ankle fracture in the first period of extra-time with referee Florin Miron immediately showing Seroni a second yellow card. Universitatea won the round of 16 match 2-1 and will meet Steaua in the quarter-finals.

The 28-year-old defender, who joined Viitorul from Poli Timisoara earlier this year, will not return on the field before April.

Viitorul, who are 11th in the league standings, are expected to announce whether they’ll appeal the sanction later on Thursday.

Viitorul were founded by former Romania great Gheorghe Hagi in 2009 and won promotion to the top flight only three years later.

MARIBOR, Slovenia — Eden Hazard had a late penalty saved as Chelsea missed a chance to advance from Group G in the Champions League on Wednesday, drawing 1-1 with Maribor.

Unrecognizable from the side that was crushed 6-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, Maribor took a deserved lead in the 50th minute when Agim Ibraimi’s superb curling shot beat Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

Chelsea, which leads the group with eight points, equalized in the 73rd minute through Nemanja Matic who latched onto a John Terry header to score from close range.

Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho felt his side had become complacent in what many expected would be another straightforward victory over the Slovenians.

“Many times surprises happen when people are not fully focused, when they believe the game can’t be a difficult one,” Mourinho said.

“Only when Maribor scored did the players realize the game was in danger. After that, a fantastic reaction.

We deserved to win, clearly.”

Mourinho reacted to a poor first-half showing by his side at

the Stadion Ljudski vrt by making a double substitution at halftime, introducing striker Diego Costa and Oscar. Luka Zahovic missed a fine chance to double the advantage and enhance Maribor’s claims of inflicting Chelsea’s first defeat of the season, before Matic’s effort 17 minutes from time saved the Blues’ blushes.

Messi scored his 70th Champions League goal in the 36th minute with a soft header after Ajax failed to clear a free kick and linked with substitute Pedro Rodriguez for his second on the night in the 76th.

The win assured Barcelona of qualification for the knockout stage of Europe’s top club competition as Paris Saint-Germain beat APOEL Nicosia 1-0 to stay top of Group F. Ajax played the last 20 minutes with 10 men after defender Joel Veltman was sent off for his second yellow card.

Veltman also was red carded last year when Ajax beat Barcelona 2-1 in Amsterdam.

SANTIAGO - Midfielder Jorge Valdivia, who backtracked on his decision to quit the Chile team after the World Cup, has been recalled for this month’s friendlies against Venezuela and Uruguay. Coach Jorge Sampaoli’s decision follows Alexis Sanchez’s request after last month’s 2-2 draw at home to Bolivia that he needed an attacking midfielder like Valdivia or Matias Fernandez to link up with.

Arsenal’s Sanchez often dropped back during that match looking for the ball and was berated by Arturo Vidal for complicating his task as playmaker.

Valdivia, who last played for Chile in the last 16 at the World Cup where they lost to hosts Brazil on penalties, has been in fine form for Palmeiras in the Brazilian championship.

Mercedes, Red Bull say small team rebellion would only hurt F1

Radical action from Formula 1’s small teams over Bernie Ecclestone’s failure to address cost issues would do more harm than good, insist leading team bosses. After a United States Grand Prix weekend where the smaller outfits whipped up talk of a strike - even though they never actually threatened it openly - there is pressure on Ecclestone to address the matter.

Talks between Ecclestone and Sauber, Force India and Lotus were scheduled for this week, amid hopes that an agreement could be reached by the Brazilian GP. Red Bull boss Christian Horner and Mercedes chief Toto Wolff have urged Ecclestone to prevent the current problems dragging on, and ensure the wild idea of a boycott does not become real. Wolff said: “I’m not into strikes - it’s kept me stranded with Air France and Lufthansa before. “So I don’t think a strike is what you do these days, and threatening to strike even less.

“I don’t think it would be good for Formula 1. That wouldn’t help

the smaller teams either. “It’s about sitting around the table, clearing the air, saying this is what we think should happen and then discussing it with the commercial rights holder.”

Horner believes a protest by the three teams would achieve nothing, and suggested that even talking about the idea was hurting F1’s reputation. “They are here to compete,” he said. “Force India is trying to beat McLaren. If they are sitting in the garage, they are not going to be going anywhere. That doesn’t work.

“And doing it publicly is the wrong way to do it. “What F1 has done during the last couple of weeks with the public slanging matches that have gone on are not good for the sport, because the sport should be focusing on what we have seen in America: good racing, wheel to wheel racing.

“The politics and the fiscal issues should be dealt behind closed doors, with the commercial rights holder, and get sorted.”

In the last two years, attacks by Buddhist mobs have left hundreds dead and 140,000 trapped in camps where they live without access to adequate health care, education or jobs.

CAIRO — A bomb blast aboard a train traveling in the Nile Delta north of Cairo killed four people and wounded nine, security officials said on Thursday. They said the blast took place shortly before midnight on Wednesday and that two policemen were among those killed.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for planting any of the three bombs, but the attacks bore the hallmarks of Islamic militants fighting the government of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, a generalturned-politician who took office in June, nearly a year after he led the military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Authorities have for years battled Islamic militants in the Sinai Peninsula, but the unrest there has escalated into a full-fledged insurgency since Morsi’s ouster in July last year. The attacks, mainly targeting security forces, have spread to the Nile Delta and Cairo itself.

The attacks in Cairo have mainly involved small, homemade bombs that cause few casualties. But they have still revealed meticulous planning and execution by the militants and exposed the inefficiency of the police.

One such attack involved three homemade bombs that went off less than 20 meters (yards) away from the walls of Cairo’s presidential Ittihadiya palace, where el-Sissi conducts business on daily basis. Two senior police officers were killed, one of whom was trying to defuse a bomb while in civilian clothes and without wearing protective gear.

President Ashraf Ghani, who assumed office earlier this year following a protracted election dispute, accepted an invitation to attend a NATO ministerial meeting on Dec. 2. He said cooperation with the international community would focus on a wide range of non-security issues, including women’s rights, governance and environmental protection. “Give us a break,” he said, referring to the challenges facing his one-month-old government.

NATO and the United States are withdrawing combat forces from Afghanistan at the end of the year, after 13 years of fighting the Taliban. A residual force of up to 12,000 U.S. and NATO forces will remain to provide training and backup for Afghanistan’s 350,000 security forces.

The Taliban remain an imposing force in much of the country and continue to carry out near-daily attacks mainly targeting security forces. On Thursday police in the eastern Paktia province received the bodies of 10 civilians who had been shot dead, according to provincial police chief Gen. Zalmai Huryakhil. He said police did not know when or why the people were killed.

The bodies were brought to the police by local village elders because the security forces cannot operate in the area where the bodies were found.

MAMUJU - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he would set aside Rp1.2 trillion for the revitalization of the country’s cocoa plantations.

The revitalization is in a bid to support the country’s ambition to become the world largest cocoa producer, Jokowi said during his visit to West Sulawesi, on Thursday.

“The revitalization is expected to take three to four years starting 2015,” he told cocoa farmers in Saletto in the district of Mamuju, West Sulawesi.

The president asked Minister of Agrarian affairs Ferry Mursidan to immediately prepare the certificate for the people’s plantations.

He also asked banks to help with credits for cocoa plantations.

He said he would encourage development of cocoa processing industry in cocoa production

centers.

He said in three years Indonesia should be the world’s largest producer of cocoa.

Currently the country is the third largest producer after the Ivory Coast and Ghana in Africa.

“For that purpose the farmers need to work the harder,” he said.

The project was to be built in Bojanegara, Banten, in cooperation with Pertamina with NIORDC to have a 40 percent stake, Pertamina 40 percent and Malaysian Petrofield 20 percent.

The refinery would be operated by a joint venture company named PT Banten Bay Refinery. The project was already approved by the Oil and Gas Directorate General on 27 May, 2008 and the Capital Investment Coordinating Board on 27 November 2008.

The watchdog said the two most error-prone spending areas were regional policy, with a misspending rate of 6.9 percent, and rural development, on 6.7 percent, the auditor said.

It cited mistakes including a company claiming funds as a small business

when it was actually owned by a large firm; the managers of an airport project adding to a contract without letting other firms bid; and a farmer claiming a subsidy for grassland that was partly covered by bushes and trees.

The EU’s focus on a “use it or lose it” approach, instead of checking how well money was spent, is a “fundamental flaw in the design of much of the EU budget,” it added.

It said however that the figures were “not a measure of fraud, inefficiency or waste” but examined how EU money was not spent within the bloc’s rules.

Caldeira called for “more incentives to improve performance and to deliver value for money.”

The EU’s budget is a perennial source of debate at a time when the continent’s economy is in the doldrums and many member states face tough decisions on austerity.

The European Commissioner for the budget, Kristalina Georgieva, said the commission would do more to stop spending errors but said they had to be seen in “context”.

“I am pleased that the court’s audit findings show that last years’ trend of increasing error rates has been stopped,” she said.

She said the EU had to work with member states to improve the situation “without adding more costs and bureaucracy.”

“Efficiency can be reflected in the budget absorption and accumulation of income because everything will use the online system. Other than the use of technology, communication from the leadership to staff will also be faster,” he said.

In establishing the Tabanan Smart Regency, the government of Tabanan also invited an expert in

this field, namely the Director of PT Lima Titik Satu, Aditya, to provide exposure to the technology. According to Aditya, the current users of internet technology hadsreached 35 percent of the global population or 2 billion of the 7 billion world population. Meanwhile, the population of Indonesia is 251 million, with about 15 percent or 38 million people using the internet.

“In terms of these data, Indonesian people have more than one phone on average,” he said. To implement the technology in the government, then there were a few main things that should be implemented namely a common vision as well as online collaboration to make the communication run efficiently and transparently so that the data processed were valid without being easily modified.

The Tabanan Smart Regency itself would be implemented gradually. Chairman of the Commission II of the Tabanan House, Putu Eka Nurcahayadi, said that the implementation of the e-Government was certainly welcomed and should be handled seriously. Australian leader determined to meet Russia leader

TANAUAN, Philippines — The Saavedras waited for death as Typhoon Haiyan tore their roof, knocked down walls and unleashed torrents of seawater below them.

All they could do was pray, say “I love you” one last time and take a picture. David Saavedra raised his cellphone in the chaos to snap a group selfie to record their final moments. He took it for his eldest sister in Manila, hoping to show that at the end, her family was together — even serene.

That explains his smile, incongruous against the wind-ripped scene and the terror-stricken faces of his younger sister, Veronica, and their mother. The picture was intended to go on top of David’s coffin, but instead it is a reminder of the family’s immense luck, and of the obligation they feel to help neighbors who weren’t nearly as fortunate when the massive typhoon hit Nov. 8, 2013.

More than 7,300 people died or went missing when Haiyan slammed the central Philippines, including the Saavedras’ laidback farming town of Tanauan, as one of the most ferocious typhoons ever to hit land. The monster storm displaced about 4 million people and turned a large swath of densely populated regions into a wasteland.

“I said ‘I love you’ to my parents because I felt at that time that it

was our last day alive,” Veronica Saavedra said in an interview in the family’s old house, now partially cleaned up and repaired. “I was so afraid I was trembling and I said, ‘Lord, if this is my last day, forgive me for everything.’”

The 21-year-old college student said even while praying, she was terrified by the loud hissing of the wind, and memories of the rising water hounded her sleep for months. The Saavedras — David, Veronica, their brother JR, their mother and their father — all survived. Three other siblings were in Manila, and one was in Kuwait.

Many other families had much different fates. In a nearby village, all but two members of a 45-member clan are buried in a mass grave.

When the rain and wind finally subsided hours after the storm hit, David, a 26-year-old accountant, left the cramped hallway on the second floor of the wood-and-concrete home where he and his family were huddled while hell broke loose. He saw bodies floating on the street outside. The next-door neighbors were drenched and shuddering on the second floor of their house, its walls gone. One paraplegic neighbor was clinging to a post near the roof of his house. Others were crying, many in shock.

“In just one click, everything can be snatched from you,” David said, tears welling in his eyes. “But the feeling that you are still alive after that is really overwhelming.”

CANBERRA, Australia — Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Thursday that he remained determined to secure a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to demand full cooperation in the investigation into the shooting down of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine.

In a joint news conference with Abbott, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte revealed that investigators had retrieved more human remains this week from the rebel-held site in eastern Ukraine where Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down on July 17 with the loss of 298 lives, mostly Dutch and including Australians.

He announced recently that a team of Dutch, Ukrainian and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe rescue workers last week safely reached the area where the Boeing 777’s wreckage is scattered and retrieved an unspecified number of human remains. The tragedy was at the top of the agenda in meetings Thursday among Rutte, Abbott and the Australian Cabinet.

Abbott said he would hold a bilateral meeting with Putin as soon

as possible either at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ summit in Beijing on Nov. 9-10 or a week later in the Australian city of Brisbane where Australia will chair a G20 meeting of leaders of wealthy and developing countries.

“One way or another, I will take the chance to speak to the Russian president sometime over the next week or so,” Abbott told reporters.

Russian officials ridiculed Abbott’s threat last month to “shirtfront” Putin — using an Australian football term for a head-on shoulder-charge to an opponent’s chest — and insisted that Abbot would have no opportunity since no bilateral meeting had been scheduled.

Abbott said Thursday that he and Rutte were united in expecting full Russian cooperation with the Dutch-led investigation. “We don’t

want the investigation ridiculed; we don’t want the investigation compromised or sabotaged,” Abbott said.

Rutte said he gave Putin a similar message on the sidelines of an AsiaEurope Meeting, or ASEM, summit last month in Milan, Italy.

“I used the opportunity again to tell him that I expect him to do everything he can to put pressure on the separatists to allow unhindered access to the crash site,” Rutte said.

During the meeting with Putin, Rutte said he compared the disaster to the Russian nuclear submarine K-141 Kursk which sank with the loss of all 118 lives aboard in the Barents Sea in 2000 and was salvaged by a Dutch consortium. Rutte said Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak would also try to meet Putin during the APEC summit.

SAO PAULO - Stella McCartney on Wednesday launched an exclusive range for Brazilian consumers at Sao Paulo Fashion Week, saying she was targeting a “cool and sexy” market.

“For me, Brazilian women are cool and sexy I have to say, and they are definitely aware when it comes to fashion,” the 43-year-old designer said.

“I think they’re very much at the forefront of fashion,” said McCartney, daughter of Beatles legend Paul, as she launched the apparel for C&A. She added she was driven by a desire to take a sustainable and responsible approach to her work -- values she said came from her parents.

“I grew up in the countryside, on an organic farm, so I was very aware of the seasons of nature.

“So for me, when I went into fashion, I wanted to be responsible, and have a different take on luxury fashion, where I would not work with fur or leather,” said McCartney, adding she wanted her collection to be affordable options for the buying public at large.

“I try to approach what I do in fashion in a sustainable and a responsible way, so not only in the materials that I use, but the way that I source and manufacture my product,” she said of a range priced between $35 and $150 and made from fabrics including cotton, viscose, lame and lace.

Working on collaborations such as her current one with the C&A chain

meant “pausing fast-fashion, just slowing it down for a moment, so that the consumer who maybe can’t afford our clothes can come and have a different experience with C&A.” McCartney said she saw her range as “quite timeless, so it’s fast-fashion -- but it’s meeting luxury in a way that you will have these garments, I hope, in the way they’re designed, in the way which we’ve sourced the highest (quality) materials we could with C&A. “I think what we have done here is a good example of what we can do with fast fashion. Indonesia needs sea remote sensing technology

DENPASAR - The Institute of National Aviation and Space (Lapan) said Indonesia needs space technology of remote sensing that could draw the map of the country’s marine potentials altogether and systematically.

“In order to back development of the maritime sector a technology is needed that could monitor the entire sea territory systematically,” Chief spokesman of Lapan Jasyanto said.

Jasyanto said remote sensing technology using satellite service would be effective to monitor and detect marine natural resources.

The technology could be used to spot ridges of rock and in planning development of the marine potentials for economy and tourism, he cited.

He added, with the remote sensing technology, the physical and biological aspects of the sea such as surface temperature and chlorophyll content could be detected.

Those elements are important to locate the potential fishing ground in the sea through the Indonesian fish catching potential zone (ZPPI).

“With the ZPPI, fishermen would be easy to find a location where there are many fishes,” he said.

Remote sensing is also important to get information about islands in outer areas for security purposes, he said.

“Monitoring of natural resources and sea security would be more efficient and effective as satellite could give information with wide coverage,” he said.

Development of remote sensing technology would be discussed in an international conference titled “Pan Ocean Remote Sensing Conference” (PORSEC) to be held by Lapan in cooperation with the state Udayana University in Denpasar from Nov. 4-7.

PORSEC is an organization dedicated to helping developing countries

to promote science especially in the application of remote sensing technology in the sea.

The conference which is held every two years attended by 400 participants from Indonesia and other countries -all professional in their remote sensing and representatives of space agencies like Lapan, JAXA (Japan), and NASA (the United States).

“Indonesia is a big maritime country. The condition forces the country to give much attention to marine and maritime affairs in line with one of the big visions of President Joko Widodo,” he said.

AMLAPURA - Evidently the endeavor of Karangasem County to plant cherry trees is in vain. Dozens of cherry trees planted in line 11 or Jalan Veteran have been withered due to drought. Even, some of them dried up and died without any leaves. Allegedly the different climatic condition of Karangasem from Japan has caused the death of the cherry trees.

When asking for confirmation about the cherry tree, the Head of Karangasem Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, I Made Suama, admitted that some cherry trees planted in the Jalur Sebelas had been withered or dead. He reasoned the poor condition of the cherry trees planted by the government occurred due to different weather condition from its natural habitat.

“Probably it is not appropriate with the weather in Indonesia. So, most of the cherry trees died,” said I Made Suama.

Due to many cherry trees died, Suama admitted that his party had withdrawn some of them. On that account, his party asserted that some pots indeed contained no cherry trees. However, it did not necessarily disappear, but had been withdrawn.

“Some cherry trees were indeed withdrawn because they died,” said I Made Suama.

As condition in the field, a number of cherry trees fenced in by bamboo pieces looked dry, like unkempt. “It has always been like that. I often passed here, but the flowers remained like that. They did not want to grow, and the leaf is rare. Probably they lack for water so that they indicated such a growth,” said a resident of Jalan Untung Suropati, I Ketut Sulendra, Thursday. Buleleng Police arrest subsidized fuel trafficker Bali Post

SINGARAJA - Within the past few days, the fuel scarcity in Buleleng was taken advantage of by individuals to get profits by breaking the law related to subsidized fuel. The Criminal Investigation Unit of Buleleng Police detained a suspect of subsidized fuel trafficking.

The suspect was prooven to be guilty of misusing the transportation of the subsidized fuel and fuel transport activities without being equipped a transportation business permit.

The suspect is named Made Putu Artawan aka MPA, 60, from Kanginan hamlet, Menyali village, Sawan subdistrict. The suspect was arrested by police on Sunday (Nov 2) around 3:30 a.m. The arrest of the suspect was based on public information obtained by police which staed that the petrol station on Jalan Ahmad Yani Singaraja often sold subsidized diesel fuel and gasoline to someone using a pick-up truck which did not have the required paper work.

The Chief of the Buleleng Police Criminal Investigation Unit, I Ketut Adnyana TJ, along with the consent of the Buleleng Police Chief Benny Arjanto said that based on field investigatios, police found the pickup truck with license plate DK 9609 UY coming from the East to the West.

Thhe truck pulled into the petrol station to look for Pertamax and Premium fuel. The suspect MPA was known to have purchase 104 liters of subsidized diesel fuel worth

IDR 577,500. which were put into four jerrycans. Then, the suspect bribed the petrol station attendant for IDR 15,000 to allow this illegal trasaction to take place.

The total amount of money spent by the suspect reached IDR 592,500. At the scene the suspect could not escape and was immediately escorted to the Buleleng Police station for further investigation.

“The suspect was unable to present a permit for the fuel purchase, so we brought the suspect to the police station for further investigation. The suspect planned to first collect and then sell the fuel, taking advanttage of fuel price hike,” said Adnyana TJ. This middle-aged man was arrested by police and the evidence consisting of eight jerrycans with 240 liters of Premium fuel, four jerrycans with 105 liters of diesel fuel, a unit of Suzuki pickup truck with license plate DK 9609 UY, key, vehicle registration and two receipts of purchase we seized. “I bought fuel by using jerrycan to put in my car and often bought at the petrol station on Jalan Ahmad Yani and Jalan Gajah Mada. I bought every week and it was also allowed by the petrol station attendants,” said the suspect MPA. For his action, the suspect was charged with the Article 55 of the Law No.22/2001 about Oil and Gas, with the sanction of imprisonment for six years and a maximal fine of IDR 60 billion, or a maximal punishment of four years and a maximal fine of IDR 40 billion. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan win big at country music awards NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Singer Miranda Lambert won four Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday, and Luke Bryan took home the top honor as entertainer of the year as U.S. politics and the absence of Taylor Swift played supporting roles in the televised ceremony.

Lambert, 30, who led all nominees with nine nods, earned her record fifth female vocalist of the year award.

“I don’t know what to say. I can’t believe I’m standing here. I can’t believe this is my life,” an emotional Lambert said accepting the award she has won five consecutive years. “Damn it!

I cry every time.”

The Texan also won CMA Awards for album of the year for “Platinum,” single of the year for the wistful “Automatic” as well as sharing the musical event of the year award with Aussie singer Keith Urban for “We Were Us.” Bryan, 38, earned his first CMA on the back of five hits from his 2013 album “Crash My Party.”

“I have long sought to have one of these in my hands,” Bryan told reporters.

The 48th annual CMA awards show, which competes with the springtime’s Academy of Country Music Awards for prestige and television audience, is one of the top promotional events on the country music calendar. Winners are chosen by the CMA’s 6,000 members.

LOS ANGELES - Forty-nine year-old “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr has welcomed a second child with his wife Susan, a baby girl named Avri, he announced Wednesday.

“After 9 months of intensive development, Team Downey is pleased to announce our 2014 fall/winter project,” the A-list star joked on his Facebook page, adding that she was born early Tuesday.

“Principal photography commenced 11-14 and will continue until she says, ‘Dad! You are embarrassing me...I’m 30, this has gotta stop,’” the veteran actor added.

Her full name is Avri Roel Downey, she weighs seven pounds, spans 20 inches and “is accompanied by a variety of Susan’s traits that have seemingly overwritten my ‘junk DNA,’” he wrote.

“I’ll post pics here + there when I’m not too busy staring,” Downey Jr quipped.

The new arrival is the couple’s second child, joining two-and-a-half year-old Exton Elias. Downey Jr also has a 21-year-old son, Indio, from a previous marriage.

DENPASAR - The Balinese economy in the third quarter of 2014 grew at a slower pace than in the previous quarter, contracting 0.03 point to 2.78 percent.

The third-quarter growth was fueled by all sectors, with the service sector recording the highest growth of 8.05 percent, chief of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) office in Bali

province Panusunan Siregar said.

The agricultural sector meanwhile grew by 0.03 percent, which is the lowest among other sectors.

The third-quarter economic

growth expanded by 6.53 percent year-on-year, fueled by all economic sectors, he said.

The construction sector recorded the highest growth of 10.61 percent

and the agricultural sector posted the lowest growth of 1.86 percent.

Cumulatively, the Balinese economy grew by 6.08 percent till the third quarter of 2014.

Panasunan said the nominal value of Bali’s regional gross domestic product (PDRB) reached Rp27.10 trillion based on the current prices in the third quarter of

2014, and Rp9.40 trillion based on the constant prices of 2000.

On the component use side, household consumption and exports still contributed the greatest chunk of the PDRB in the third quarter of 2014.

He said the economic slowdown in the third quarter was caused by low household and government consumption.
