Rob Kardashian’s Instagram account disappears after outburst LOS ANGELES — Rob Kardashian says Instagram shut down his page on Wednesday following his flurry of posts attacking his former fiancée. Kardashian then brought his tirade to Twitter, accusing fellow reality star Blac Chyna of infidelity, promiscuity and drug use. Earlier in the day, he posted explicit photos of Chyna on Instagram. She responded on Snapchat with a claim that Kardashian had beaten her. The post has since been deleted. Both were top trending topics worldwide on Twitter. Attempts to reach representatives for Kardashian and Chyna were unsuccessful. Instagram released a statement saying: “We value maintaining a safe and supportive space for our community and we work to remove reported content that violates our guidelines.” Kardashian and Chyna announced their engagement in April 2016 and starred in an E! reality show about their relationship. The couple split up a month later. Their daughter, Dream, was born last November. (ap)

“War for the Planet of the Apes” sees motion-capture performance specialist Andy Serkis return in his role as Caesar, leader of a super-intelligent band of apes who take on an army led by Woody Harrelson’s ruthless colonel in a postapocalyptic setting. Serkis said the conflict between apes and humans at the film’s core was a warning against supremacist ideologies. “If you think your species is better, if you think your type of people or your type of religion or anything that your
set of beliefs is better than someone else’s, then that is the road to ruin,” he said. Serkis’s on-screen antagonist Harrelson, who has experience in dystopian cinema from his role in the “Hunger Games” films, said that he had been a fan of the renewed series before being asked to appear in it. “It was a privilege to be asked to do it. I don’t think it’s that I’m drawn to that (dark sci-fi films), I’m just drawn - some things make sense. Some things you
can’t say no to.” “War” follows on from “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”, and is to be the final instalment of this series, but not the end of the franchise altogether, said the film’s director and co-writer Matt Reeves. The original “Planet of the Apes” spawned a five-film series that ran from 1968 to 1973. The first film, an arresting science fiction classic that starred Charlton Heston, won an Oscar for its prosthetic make-up effects and was a critical and commercial hit, but the subsequent movies struggled to replicate the original’s success. Venezuelan lawmakers beaten, besieged in latest violence
CARACAS - Pipe-wielding government supporters burst into Venezuela’s opposition-controlled congress on Wednesday, witnesses said, attacking and besieging lawmakers in the latest flare-up of violence during a political crisis. The melee, which injured seven opposition politicians, was another worrying flashpoint in a traumatic last three months for the South American OPEC nation, shaken by opposition protests against socialist President Nicolas Maduro.
At least 90 people have died in the unrest, with fighting and barricades frequently blocking cities across Venezuela. National Assembly president Julio Borges said more than 350 politicians, journalists and guests to the Independence Day session were trapped in the siege that lasted until dusk. “There are bullets, cars destroyed including mine, blood stains around the (congress) palace,” he told reporters. “The violence in Venezuela has a name and surname: Nicolas Maduro.” The crowd had gathered just after dawn outside the building in downtown Caracas, chanting in favor of Maduro, witnesses said. In the late morning, several dozen people ran past the gates with pipes, sticks and stones and went on the attack. Several injured lawmakers stumbled bloodied and dazed around the assembly’s corridors. Some journalists were robbed. After the morning attack, a crowd
of roughly 100 people, many dressed in red and shouting “Long Live The Revolution!”, trapped people inside for hours, witnesses said. Some in the crowd outside the legislature brandished pistols, threatened to cut water and power supplies, and played an audio of former socialist president Hugo Chavez saying “Tremble, oligarchy!” Fireworks were thrown inside. The worst-hurt lawmaker, Americo De Grazia, was hit on the head, fell unconscious, and was eventually taken by stretcher to an ambulance. Militant Arts: spirit of the land speaks through its children
Although Bali is world-renown for its highly developed artistic traditions that are rooted in religious expressions of the powers of nature, art on the island has been silently flourishing in recent decades. Before the 1930’s nearly all art not the island was created for specifically religious purposes and as many people know, radical changes in techniques, materials and approaches were then brought about by contact with foreign artists, access to new materials and perhaps most importantly to the new concept of art as commodity that tourism encouraged. What fewer people are aware of is that the initial changes that influenced the production of art in Bali have led to all kinds of new approaches to art -many of which remain none the less rooted in ancestral practices. From the widely popular artisanal art works that remain essentially traditional in the sense of not particularly expressing an individual artist’s vision to the rise of recognized artists to group art movements and all manner of exploration in between, art in Bali has been undergoing a renaissance. Partly due to information technology which makes images, techniques, philosophy and styles easily accessible to artists in Bali, partly due to the unending stream of foreign artists who come to work in Bali and partly due to Balinese artists themselves visiting other parts of the archipelago (and the world) and becoming exposed to new ways of looking at the practice of art, a whole new kind of art movement has been developing in recent years. Art movements or groups of artists have been a part of the Balinese art landscape for some time, yet due to the sociocultural particularities of Bali, they have for the most part remained somewhat isolated and some might argue stagnant.
Some people blame the busy ceremonial schedules of Balinese Hindus, the generally insular mentality of the people of this island and the taboos around being overtly critical, for the lack of sustained effort towards building a critical discourse around art. Whatever the reason, there appears to have been a lack of cohesion amongst artists in Bali that might allow for the wealth of talent here to become known to a wider audience. Militant Arts has taken the bold stance of trying to create such cohesion. With 31 members, this artist collective is made up of artists from various different art groups who have been active in producing promoting particular aesthetic and conceptual styles as well as younger artists. They have come together under a single banner with the express purpose of representing the diverse yet unified spirit of contemporary Balinese art. There most recent project: A.T.U.H (Art The Universal Habit), involved some of the members of Militant Arts taking a three day trip to the neighbouring island of Nusa Penida to “refresh their spirits and get some perspective”. Starting with the popular traditional pastime of tirta yatra which is to visit far away temples as a group , Militant Arts prayed together at Pura Dalam Ped, Nusa Penida’s famous temple where Balinese Hindus like to go to get inspiration from the destructive yet renewing spirit of the ocean. They then continued on to Pura Giri Putra located inside a cave up a hill. Nyegoro-gunung or “ocean-mountain” is a concept in Bali that is used to refer to the the cycle that water (as the source of life) goes through from the clouds that form on the ocean, rain down on the mountains, filling the rivers that then flow to the sea. This concept is embodied in various ceremonial practices. Militant Arts’ refreshing journey then continued to Atuh beach which has recently become a popular tourist attraction.

Here they descended a steep cliff to create a 10 foot long painting together on a high precipice under the midday sun. This group-painting, representing the spirit of togetherness that informs their artistic vision, was carried across the island to a beach in town where it was tied like a cape around one of the artists who performed an artistic offering to the sea. The group then brought this painting to an open space where it was set ablaze in a kind of impromptu ritual representing the culmination of their inspirational journey together, a kind of death of this group art work to be born again in the individual arts works of each of the artists present. Their whole journey could be read as a kind of performance art piece that speaks of the development of Balinese art from purely religious, to still community oriented but informed by tourism, to struggling to maintain a connection to the source of life, to becoming devoid of meaning or even existence and then born again in the individual art works displayed in a gallery in Sanur. This journey speaks of the reality that despite great changes to art in Bali, these artists nonetheless remain informed by and expressive of something they feel to be essentially Balinese. Although the art works on display are not cohesive in terms of aesthetics, style, technique, or content, they are however held together by a conceptual framework based on a common process and point of reference: the particular natural setting experienced and the cultural context that inspires and informs the works of these Balinese artists. Militant Arts are militant in their devotion to maintaining their individual artists practices, promoting a distinctly Balinese style of contemporary art and in their determination to reach to the far horizons physically, emotionally and conceptually. A.T.U.H will be on display at Gallery Santrian (Jl. Danau Tamblingan, Sanur) starting July 7th at 19:00 until September 5th, 2017. (kmb)

Chanel aims high with starry ‘Eiffel Tower’ Paris show

PARIS — The ever-audacious Karl Lagerfeld proved he is still nimble when it comes to putting on a fashion show. The 83-year-old had a 46-ton Eiffel Tower recreated inside the Grand Palais for the pleasure of his Chanel couture celebrity guests.

The 38-meter (125-foot) replica of Paris’ most iconic monument that greeted Chanel’s couture guests seemed to extend past the famed hall’s glass roof thanks to the illusion of swirling clouds created by steam. Back at ground level, celebrities including Julianne Moore, Katy Perry, Kristen Stewart, Pharrell Williams and Tilda Swinton were shown to metal seats in real sand and gravel. “It’s extraordinary to come into the Grand Palais, which is awesome at the best of any time, but to stand under the tour Eiffel is extraordinary. Only Chanel,” Swinton said. The wood-and-steel tower, which took workmen six weeks to make, was a stunning piece of craftsmanship. It copied nearly beam for beam the columns and metal twists of the edifice made by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Universal Exhibition.
CHANEL GOES TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY
The dawn of the 20th century — the period following the Eiffel Tower’s construction — was the creative touchstone for Chanel’s wintery-looking couture. The first model strode out in sunlight filtered by wroughtiron columns to set the tone of the graphic, steel-colored collection. She wore a wide-hipped, charcoal gray coat with exaggerated leg-of-mutton arms — styles that harkened to the Belle Epoque period. This clever historic musing continued with flattened bowler hats and black patent lace-up ankle boots popular before World War I. Flourishing bouquets of plumes then shot out from wrists, ankles and shoulders in evening wear. “In this collection, there are feathers treated like fur,” Lagerfeld explained. But the designer relied on myriad references for a show whose one unifying theme might have been simply the Parisienne. “It’s a vision of a revived Parisian woman. It is all about cut, shapes, silhouettes,” he added. Signature tweed jackets were reimagined as long tunics, or cropped and double-breasted. Then it got arty. Mechanical Art Deco motifs gave a 1920s flair to black froufrou gowns that evoked the paintings of Robert Delaunay. Their frothy, flower embellishments at the hem gave the silhouette a vibrant dynamic. Mini-dresses in tweed, retro bateau collars and bows under the bust mixed in a dash of the 1960s. Thigh-high boots added a hint of contemporary provocation.

The German-born Lagerfeld was awarded Paris’ highest honor — the “La Medaille Grand Vermeil” — by Mayor Anne Hidalgo for service to the city he’s called home for seven decades. And there was perhaps no better site for such an award than beneath a replica of the Eiffel Tower. “Paris gives you its thanks and its love through this Grand Silver Gilt medal ... which is our city’s highest award,” Hidalgo said in front of a celebrity audience, including models Claudia Schiffer and Cara Delevingne. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Paris loves you. You are Paris.” Lagerfeld, a contemporary of the late fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent, has been at the forefront of Paris fashion since the 1960s, designing for Chloe before taking over Chanel in 1983. Although he doesn’t see himself as French, the designer professed his love for the City of Light. “I am a foreigner and I intend to stay a foreigner because foreigners see Paris and France through a different eye,” he said, accepting the award. “And when you are not French, you look without nationalism or patriotism... TABANAN — Tanah Lot seems unwilling to be outdone by the implementation of Jatiluwih Agriculture Festival held last June. At the beginning of this July, it also organized an event named as the Tanah Lot Kreatifood and Art Festival 2017. Unmitigatedly, the budget allocated for this event reaches IDR 1.4 Billion. The event to be held for three days on July 7-9 will be filled in with various Tabanan tourism promotion activities such as art performances, gebogan parades, exhibitions and Tabanan culinary festival showcasing entil cake, bamboo shoot, lawar klungah, lawar kuwir and others by involving more than 20 local culinary businesses in Tabanan district as well as the involvement of vocational schools. Moreover, metropolis Chef Juna will be participating in the event through cooking demonstration based on Muscovy duck. “Although it has become a major tourist destination, this event is further expected to increase the number of tourists visit as well as become a medium for cultural development and preservation in Tabanan,” said Operations Manager of Tanah Lot attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, on Tuesday (Jul. 4). In art performances, the event featuring the theme Luhuring Segara Rasa lan Raksa will involve the artists from various regions, so they are not only from Kediri subdistrict such as gong kebyar performance, children rindik gamelan music, gong kebyar and contemporary dance,
legong dance, prembon, bondres and others. “Approximately 20 art troupes with more than 100 artists will be involved in this art performances displayed in two locations, namely in the area of wantilan hall and exhibition,” he said. Meanwhile, the gebogan parade will also display 1,150 pieces of gebogan accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music from 23 customary villages in Kediri subdistrict. Then, the exhibition in Tanah Lot Kreatifood and Art Festival 2017 will display the SME products of Tabanan district. 76,400 children in Tabanan get JE vaccination
TABANAN — Central government through the ministry of health held the campaign of Japanese encephalitis (JE) immunization. Implementation of this campaign was first performed in the areas of JE endemic or JE-positive where one of which is Bali province. In Tabanan, a total of 76,400 children ranged in the age of 9 months to 15 years are targeted to get this vaccination in October to November 2017.

Nariana continued that JE immunization campaign activity is an attempt to break the chain of the JE transmission. JE is a disease caused by viruses transmitted through mosquitoes. JE virus infec-
tion itself in Tabanan had occurred in the region of Pupuan. Why JE immunization campaign is needed? Nariana said this disease has no medicine so far. All this time, the treatment is only carried out by curing the symptoms such as the handling of fever, gastrointestinal illness or other symptoms. cause death. “The only step to deal with JE is prevention through vaccination,” he explained. JE immunization campaign will take place from October to November 2017. While in November, the vaccinations will be conducted at integrated toddler service post (Posyandu) targeting children aged 9 months to 15 months. A crystal meth smuggler arrested
DENPASAR — Joint team of the Directorate of Narcotic Investigation Unit of Bali Police and the Taskforce of Contra Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC) combed Gilimanuk Harbor on Wednesday (Jun. 28). As a result, the team could arrest the suspect Agus S, 40, in the area of passenger dropping off at Post 2 of Gilimanuk Harbor and a total of 239 grams of crystal meth could be seized. According to Deputy Director of Narcotic Investigation Agency of Bali Police, Sudjarwoko, accompanied by Subdivision Head of Public Information, Ayu Kusuma Dewi, said that on Tuesday (Jul. 4) that disclosure of this case was based on the investigation for a few days earlier. “We
get information there is delivery of crystal meth in large quantities to Bali by land. So, we immediately comb the entrance of Bali,” said Sudjarwoko. At that time, the suspect from Sumedang, West Java, was driving a Daihatsu Xenia car with license plate of DK 793 BH. a place according to the order of the drug dealer. “The goods are taken from Jakarta and brought to Bali by land. The suspect admitted to have been given by someone unknown,” he said. When examined, Agus claimed to have smuggled drugs to Bali for three times. He received IDR 5 million for once delivery of crystal meth to Bali. “For the first and second delivery, the weight of crystal meth is almost the same as the current one, namely on the average of 2.5 ounces,” said Sudjarwoko. At least three hurt, 11 missing as heavy rain pounds Japan
TOKYO - One man was dug out of a landslide without any signs of life and two women were injured as record rains battered southwestern Japan for a second day on Thursday, with flooded rivers forcing 400,000 from their homes, officials and media said. At least 11 people were missing or could not be reached, including a child. Parts of Fukuoka prefecture on the southwestern island of Kyushu were hit by 774 mm (30.5 inches) of rain in nine hours on Wednesday, about 2.2 times the amount of rain that falls in a normal July, NHK national television said. Some 7,500 rescuers, including police, firefighters and soldiers from Japan’s Self Defence Forces, were mobilised to help with evacuations and search for the missing. Officials said the military presence could be expanded up to 5,000 people and 50 helicopters if needed. Landslides were reported in several areas. One man was dug out from a landslide in cardiopulmonary arrest and without signs of life, a standard phrase used in Japan until death is confirmed by a doctor, NHK said. Residents spent a worried night at evacuation centres set up at schools and government buildings on high ground amid reports of landslides and flooded roads. “I heard this tremendous rumbling noise and then the house exploded. A tree burst through the

A schoolboy sitting with his family told NHK: “I haven’t heard from some of my friends, and I’m really worried.” There were no immediate reports of major transportation problems, but television footage showed a railway line left broken and twisted and roads eaten away by floodwaters. KUALA SIN - Prime Minister Najib Razak won Malaysia’s last general election, despite losing the popular vote. Since then, he has been embroiled in a corruption scandal that has been investigated in a half-dozen countries. Yet the avuncular leader with an aristocratic pedigree was still expecting to cruise to another election victory in polls due by mid-2018, maintaining his coalition’s record of unbroken rule since independence in 1957. Now, all bets are off. That’s because his former mentor and prime minister for 22 years, Mahathir Mohamad, who turns 92 next week, has agreed to join a fractured opposition alliance and head the government again if it wins. He would be the world’s oldest prime minister if that happened. Mahathir, along with Najib’s former deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin - fired last year for questioning his boss about the scandal - have formed a new party called Bersatu (Unite). It has opened branches in 165 of parliament’s 222 constituencies, Muhyiddin told Reuters, a feat few opposition parties have managed. During his 1981-2003 rule, Mahathir championed modernisation by switching Malaysia’s focus from plantations and mining to a diversified high-tech manufacturing base on the back of foreign investment. A considerable fan base is excited about his comeback. “I was still young when Mahathir was prime minister. Mahathir also dealt ruthlessly with opponents, jailing his former deputy - and now alliance partner - Anwar Ibrahim on corruption and sodomy charges in the late 1990s. One is around the state’s 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) strategic development fund that Najib, 63, founded after taking power in 2009. Its murky transactions through overseas front companies and Middle Eastern partners, many of them exposed by foreign media reports, have bewildered the public over the past two years. Najib insisted he did nothing wrong when it leaked to the media that $700 million wound up in his bank account before the 2013 election. BUSINESS EU, Japan seal free trade in signal to Trump
BRUSSELS - Japan and the European Union agreed on Thursday to a free trade pact, creating the world’s biggest open economic area and signalling resistance to what they see as U.S. President Donald Trump’s protectionist turn. Signed in Brussels on the eve of meetings with Trump at a summit in Hamburg, the “political agreement” between two economies accounting for a third of global GDP is heavy with symbolism. It leaves some areas of negotiation still to finish, though officials insist the key snags have been overcome. “Ahead of the G20 summit tomorrow, I believe Japan and the EU are demonstrating our strong political will to fly the flag for free trade against a shift toward protectionism,” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a joint news conference with EU institutional chiefs Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker. “It is a strong message to the world.” In the works for four years, it has been pushed over the line towards a final treaty signature in the coming months by the election of Trump and his moves to ditch a Pacific trade pact that included Japan and leave talks with the EU in limbo. “Although some are saying that the time of isolationism and disintegration is coming again, we are demonstrating that this is not the case,” European Council President Tusk said. “There is no protection in protectionism,” added Juncker, the president of the executive European Commission, who played down any suggestion there would be further negotiating problems and said he hoped the treaty could go into effect early in 2019. Fears of cheaper import competition for European carmakers and Japanese dairy producers were among the thorniest issues, but officials said the two sides were driven by a shared alarm at Trump’s apparent shift away from multilateral open trading systems towards an aggressive “America First” policy. Britain’s finance industry faces ‘tipping point’ over Brexit
LONDON - Britain will lose its status as Europe’s top financial centre unless it keeps borders open to specialist staff, improves infrastructure and expands links with emerging economies, TheCityUK said in a report published on Thursday. The report from Britain’s most powerful financial lobby group said continental Europe might eventually become the preferred destination for banks, insurers and asset managers as they relocate business there to retain access to the EU single market. Although companies may begin by initially shifting a small number of jobs to Europe this may begin
to accelerate when property leases expire, they carry out business reviews, or when the cost of capital becomes uneconomical. “Shifts out of the UK may gradually erode the ‘cluster effect’ of the financial ecosystem, with the threat of a tipping point in the ecosystem being reached,” the group said in a 83-page document outlining how the industry can thrive over the next decade. Securing a favourable deal for financial services from the Brexit negotiations is one of the biggest challenges for the British government because it is its largest export sector and biggest source of corporate tax. Britain’s finance industry could
lose up to 38 billion pounds ($49 billion) in revenue in a so-called “hard Brexit” that would restrict its access to the EU single market, according to some estimates. The report said the government must ensure businesses can recruit people to fill skill gaps and must simplify the process of getting a visa. Brexit has already made it harder to attract people to Britain and the government is introducing policies making immigration more restrictive and expensive, the report said. It said the cost of hiring an employee on a five-year visa has risen by 250 percent to 7,000 pounds over the last year and the minimum sal-

U.S. prepared to use force on North Korea ‘if we must’ -U.N. envoy
UNITED NATIONS - The United States cautioned on Wednesday it was ready to use force if need be to stop North Korea’s nuclear missile program but said it preferred global diplomatic action against Pyongyang for defying world powers by test launching a ballistic missile that could hit Alaska. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told a meeting of the U.N. Security Council that North Korea’s actions were “quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic solution” and the United States was prepared to defend itself and its allies. “One of our capabilities lies with our considerable military forces. We will use them if we must, but we prefer not to have to go in that direction,” Haley said. She urged China, North Korea’s only major ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang. Speaking with his Japanese counterpart on Wednesday, U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis underscored the “ironclad commitment” of the United States to defending Japan and providing “extended deterrence using the full range of U.S. capabilities,” Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in a statement. Mattis’ assurances to Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada came during a phone call to discuss the North Korean test, the statement said. Taking a major step in its missile program, North Korea on Tuesday test launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that some experts believe has the range to reach the U.S. states of Alaska and Hawaii and perhaps the U.S.

We can restrict the flow of oil to their military and their weapons programs. We can increase air and maritime restrictions. We can hold senior regime officials accountable,” Haley said. Diplomats say Beijing has not been fully enforcing existing international sanctions on its neighbor and has resisted tougher measures, such as an oil embargo, bans on the North Korean airline and guest workers, and measures against Chinese banks and other firms doing business with the North. “Much of the burden of enforcing U.N. sanctions rests with China,” Haley said. In a speech during a military parade for Independence Day, Maduro condemned the “strange” violence in the assembly and asked for an investigation. But he also challenged the opposition to speak out about violence from within its ranks. In daily protests since April, young demonstrators have frequently attacked security forces with stones, homemade mortars and Molotov cocktails, and burned property. They killed one man by dousing him in gasoline and setting him on fire. “I want peace for Venezuela,” Maduro said. “I don’t accept violence from anyone.” FOREIGN CONDEMNATION
Numerous foreign nations repudiated Wednesday’s events. “I condemn the grotesque attack on the Venezuelan assembly,” tweeted UK ambassador John Saville. “This violence, perpetrated during the celebration of Venezuela’s independence, is an assault on the democratic principles cherished by the men and women who struggled for Venezuela’s independence 206 years ago today,” the U.S. State Department said. Venezuela’s opposition is demanding general elections to end socialist rule and solutions to the OPEC nation’s brutal economic crisis. The government says its foes are seeking a violent coup with U.S. support. Earlier, a Venezuelan police officer who staged a helicopter attack on government buildings in Caracas last week appeared in an internet video vowing to continue fighting. “Once again we are in Caracas, ready and willing to continue our struggle for the liberation of our country,” police pilot Oscar Perez said in the video, wearing a military uniform and wool cap, with a Venezuelan flag and rifle behind him. Perez had not been seen since he hijacked a helicopter last week and flew through Caracas pulling a “Freedom” banner. He opened fire and dropped grenades on the Interior Ministry and Supreme Court but nobody was injured. Maduro, 54, the successor to Hugo Chavez, called that attack a terrorist assault to overthrow him and lambasted Western nations for not condemning it. But many government critics doubt the official version, and some even suggested it may have been staged to divert attention from the country’s economic and political crises. In the video, Perez said the attack was “perfectly achieved” with no collateral damage “because it was planned, because we are not murderers like you, Mr. Nicolas Maduro.” Perez said he had staged an emergency landing on the Caribbean coast following the attack, and returned to the capital after hiking through mountains. The Information Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Perez, who has portrayed himself as a James Bond-cum-Rambo figure on social media, also is an actor who starred in a 2015 movie about the rescue of a kidnapped businessman. Although he has claimed wider support within the security forces, Perez’s actions so far appear to be a rogue stunt organized by a small group of disaffected policemen. Venezuela’s opposition says Maduro is seeking to consolidate control through a Constituent Assembly, a superbody that will be elected at the end of July. The opposition has promised to boycott the vote, which it says is rigged in favor of the ruling Socialist Party. Before the attack on them, opposition lawmakers held a session denouncing the president as a “dictator” and approving a plebiscite that the opposition is organizing for July 16, asking Venezuelans what they think of Maduro’s plans. Singapore repatriates two “radicalised” maids to Indonesia - minister SINGAPORE - Singapore has repatriated two Indonesian maids who were “radicalised” by Islamists using social media, bringing the total number of such cases to 9 since 2015, the second minister for home affairs has said. Authorities in the city-state said last month they had detained the first Singaporean for suspected Islamist radicalism as concern grows about the spread of the Islamic State group in Southeast Asia. The government has reiterated over the past year that the small, wealthy island nation is a target for Islamist groups and has urged the public to be alert. Minister Desmond Lee told parliament on Tuesday the two maids, aged 25 and 28, did not have plans to carry out any violence in Singapore and were not known to have influenced their friends in the country. “Similar to the earlier cases,
both of them were ISIS supporters, radicalised through social media,” Lee said after lawmakers asked for an update on the threat posed by radicalised foreigners in Singapore. Singapore said late last year it had deported nearly 70 foreigners, including five maids, for suspected radicalism over the previous two years. Authorities in neighbouring Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, said last year they had arrested six Indonesian suspects with links to Islamic State who were plotting an attack on Singapore. Worries over the rise of Islamic State were heightened by the capture of Marawi City in the southern Philippines island of Mindanao by Islamist militants in May. Police investigate Indonesian president’s son for blasphemy
JAKARTA — Indonesian police are investigating allegations of blasphemy and hate speech against the youngest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
Police plan to summon Kaesang Pangarep for questioning after receiving a complaint about a video uploaded to YouTube in May, Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono said Thursday. However, local media quoted the deputy national police chief, Syafruddin, as saying on Thursday that there appeared to be no criminal offense involved and the case should be dropped. The nearly three-minute video entitled “Ask Daddy for a Project” — a reference to children of politicians who seek business favors — includes criticism of Indonesians who during recent sectarian tensions in the Muslim-majority nation declared they would refuse
funeral rites for those who supported non-Muslims as leaders. Rights groups have frequently called for Indonesia’s draconian blasphemy law to be repealed. It allows for sentences of up to five years in prison and is often used to attack minorities and political foes. The former governor of Jakarta, a minority Christian, is serving a two-year prison sentence for blasphemy after being sentenced in May following months of protests against him by Islamic hardliners. The complainant, Muhammad Hidayat, a resident of Jakarta satellite city Bekasi, said in his report to police that Kaesang also humiliated villagers by describing those he criticized for intolerant attitudes as “countrified.” Kaesang, 22, is currently in Germany with his father who is on an official visit. This weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix will show if the rift between the fiercely competitive multiple world champions has really been healed, or whether the pressure of race day could bring it back out into the open on Sunday. Vettel, who has four world titles to Hamilton’s three, escaped further punishment from the FIA this week after they ordered a review of his deliberate collision with Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix two weeks ago. An irate Vettel swerved into Hamilton, albeit at slow speed, because he thought the British driver had slammed his brakes on recklessly late, right in front of him, seconds earlier. It was another incident that underlined how, despite 45 Grand Prix wins, the vastly experienced Vettel is prone to moments of uncontrolled volatility. Yet Hamilton, for all his brilliant driving, retains a steely edge to his driving that
some — such as Vettel and Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg over the last three years — consider overly provocative. Despite the view that he was in the wrong in Baku, Vettel effectively escaped with a slap on the wrist. Having met with Vettel and Ferrari’s team principal Maurizio Arrivabene at its headquarters in Paris, and with the addition of an apology from the German driver on his personal website, FIA president Jean Todt deemed that the time penalty given to Vettel during the race was sufficient punishment. Hamilton, scheduled to attend a news conference later Thursday in Spielberg, may feel that Vettel got away lightly considering that the difference in points remains the same. Vettel leads him by 14 points after eight races, so the apology arguably makes little difference in terms of the standings. Hamilton’s Mercedes team, cu-
riously restrained in its criticism of Vettel two weeks ago, is trying to tackle different issues. “Every great Formula One season is marked by a great rivalry,” Mercedes’ head of motorsport Toto Wolff said. “As calm as it started, it was only a matter of time until the rivalry would eventually become more fierce and controversial. “We have moved past that moment now and it is a closed chapter,” Wolff continued. “Our focus since Baku has been on our own shortcomings, reviewing both the design and procedures around our headrest which cost Lewis the win two weeks ago.” The heated clash took the spotlight away from the fact that Hamilton arguably missed out on victory — finishing one spot behind fourth-place Vettel — because he had to change his car’s faulty headrest at the same time Vettel was in the pit lane serving out his time penalty. MANCHESTER — Manchester United is looking to sign striker Romelu Lukaku after the club agreed on a fee of 75 million pounds ($97 million) with Everton, a person familiar with the deal said on Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of a transfer that is yet to be completed. The 24-year-old Lukaku will have to finalize personal terms and undergo a medical examination before a transfer can be completed to United, where he would be linking with manager Jose Mourinho for a second time. Mourinho was Chelsea manager when Lukaku was sold to Everton in 2014 after the Belgium international failed to establish a first-team place and had to spend most of his time on loan at West Brom-
wich Albion and Everton. English Premier League champion Chelsea has also reportedly been trying to re-sign Lukaku in this summer transfer window. Lukaku, a powerfully built, 6-foot-3 (1.90-meter) forward, played only a few games under Mourinho at Chelsea. But strengthening the strike force has been a priority for Mourinho ahead of his second season in charge at United after Zlatan Ibrahimovic was released. Lukaku was the second highest scorer in the Premier League last season, netting 25 as Everton finished seventh in the standings. United was a place higher up but still qualified for the Champions League by winning the Europa League. Facebook Inc, Twitter Inc and Snap Inc are seeking online rights to video highlights from Twentyfirst Century Fox Inc for next year’s soccer World Cup, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The companies have offered tens of millions of dollars for rights to video highlights for the Russia-hosted tournament that air in the United States, Bloomberg reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. Social media companies have beefed up their focus on signing live-streaming sports deals as young audience increasingly rely on the internet to watch sports, ditching the traditional cable services. Fox Sports said last month it partnered with Facebook to live-stream UEFA Champions League matches during the 2017-18 season. Social media’s growing interest in video, including sports, gives Fox a potential new source of revenue for the games as well as a tool to promote its coverage, Bloomberg said. KOBE — Japanese club Vissel Kobe rolled out the red carpet for German striker Lukas Podolski on Thursday, hoping the high-profile signing will improve their fortunes in the JLeague. Arriving by charter at Kobe Airport, Podolski was greeted by a large group of Kobe supporters eager to get a glimpse of the World Cup-winning striker. “The first target is to fight for the first three places (in the J-League) and to qualify for the (Asian) Champions League,” Podolski said. “I think as well it is a nice challenge for me to see other countries and play against other big teams.” Podolski has moved from Turkish giant Galatasaray after signing a deal with Kobe estimated to

Facebook Inc, Twitter Inc and Snap Inc are seeking online rights to video highlights from Twentyfirst Century Fox Inc for next year’s soccer World Cup, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The companies have offered tens of millions of dollars for rights to video highlights for the Russia-hosted tournament that air in the United States, Bloomberg reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. Social media companies have beefed up their focus on signing live-streaming sports deals as young audience increasingly rely on the internet to watch sports, ditching the traditional cable services. Fox Sports said last month it partnered with Facebook to live-stream UEFA Champions League matches during the 2017-18 season. Social media’s growing interest in video, including sports, gives Fox a potential new source of revenue for the games as well as a tool to promote its coverage, Bloomberg said. KOBE — Japanese club Vissel Kobe rolled out the red carpet for German striker Lukas Podolski on Thursday, hoping the high-profile signing will improve their fortunes in the JLeague. Arriving by charter at Kobe Airport, Podolski was greeted by a large group of Kobe supporters eager to get a glimpse of the World Cup-winning striker. “The first target is to fight for the first three places (in the J-League) and to qualify for the (Asian) Champions League,” Podolski said. “I think as well it is a nice challenge for me to see other countries and play against other big teams.” Podolski has moved from Turkish giant Galatasaray after signing a deal with Kobe estimated to
be worth $5.3 million. Kobe lost 5-0 to Kawasaki Frontale last weekend and is in 11th place at the halfway stage of the season, 13 points behind leaders Kashima Antlers. Podolski has scored 48 goals for Germany and played in three World Cups. He is the highest-profile J-League import since Uruguay striker Diego Forlan, who played for Cerezo Osaka from 2014-15. Kobe had hoped Podolski would leave Galatasaray early and join them in the J-League before the spring transfer window closed on March 31. But he stayed put until the end of the Turkish season. This weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix will show if the rift between the fiercely competitive multiple world champions has really been healed, or whether the pressure of race day could bring it back out into the open on Sunday. Vettel, who has four world titles to Hamilton’s three, escaped further punishment from the FIA this week after they ordered a review of his deliberate collision with Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix two weeks ago. An irate Vettel swerved into Hamilton, albeit at slow speed, because he thought the British driver had slammed his brakes on recklessly late, right in front of him, seconds earlier. It was another incident that underlined how, despite 45 Grand Prix wins, the vastly experienced Vettel is prone to moments of uncontrolled volatility. Yet Hamilton, for all his brilliant driving, retains a steely edge to his driving that
some — such as Vettel and Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg over the last three years — consider overly provocative. Despite the view that he was in the wrong in Baku, Vettel effectively escaped with a slap on the wrist. Having met with Vettel and Ferrari’s team principal Maurizio Arrivabene at its headquarters in Paris, and with the addition of an apology from the German driver on his personal website, FIA president Jean Todt deemed that the time penalty given to Vettel during the race was sufficient punishment. Hamilton, scheduled to attend a news conference later Thursday in Spielberg, may feel that Vettel got away lightly considering that the difference in points remains the same. Vettel leads him by 14 points after eight races, so the apology arguably makes little difference in terms of the standings. Hamilton’s Mercedes team, cu-
riously restrained in its criticism of Vettel two weeks ago, is trying to tackle different issues. “Every great Formula One season is marked by a great rivalry,” Mercedes’ head of motorsport Toto Wolff said. “As calm as it started, it was only a matter of time until the rivalry would eventually become more fierce and controversial. “We have moved past that moment now and it is a closed chapter,” Wolff continued. “Our focus since Baku has been on our own shortcomings, reviewing both the design and procedures around our headrest which cost Lewis the win two weeks ago.” The heated clash took the spotlight away from the fact that Hamilton arguably missed out on victory — finishing one spot behind fourth-place Vettel — because he had to change his car’s faulty headrest at the same time Vettel was in the pit lane serving out his time penalty. U.S. prepared to use force on North Korea ‘if we must’ -U.N. envoy
UNITED NATIONS - The United States cautioned on Wednesday it was ready to use force if need be to stop North Korea’s nuclear missile program but said it preferred global diplomatic action against Pyongyang for defying world powers by test launching a ballistic missile that could hit Alaska. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told a meeting of the U.N. Security Council that North Korea’s actions were “quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic solution” and the United States was prepared to defend itself and its allies. “One of our capabilities lies with our considerable military forces. We will use them if we must, but we prefer not to have to go in that direction,” Haley said. She urged China, North Korea’s only major ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang. Speaking with his Japanese counterpart on Wednesday, U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis underscored the “ironclad commitment” of the United States to defending Japan and providing “extended deterrence using the full range of U.S. capabilities,” Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in a statement. Mattis’ assurances to Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada came during a phone call to discuss the North Korean test, the statement said. Taking a major step in its missile program, North Korea on Tuesday test launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that some experts believe has the range to reach the U.S. states of Alaska and Hawaii and perhaps the U.S.

The missile test is a direct challenge to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has vowed to prevent North Korea from being able to hit the United States with a nuclear missile. Haley said the United States would propose new U.N. sanctions on North Korea in coming days and warned that if Russia and China did not support the move, then “we will go our own path.” She did not give details on what sanctions would be proposed, but outlined possible options. “The international community can cut off the major sources of hard currency to the North Korean regime. We can restrict the flow of oil to their military and their weapons programs. We can increase air and maritime restrictions. We can hold senior regime officials accountable,” Haley said. Diplomats say Beijing has not been fully enforcing existing international sanctions on its neighbor and has resisted tougher measures, such as an oil embargo, bans on the North Korean airline and guest workers, and measures against Chinese banks and other firms doing business with the North. “Much of the burden of enforcing U.N. sanctions rests with China,” Haley said. The United States might seek to take unilateral action and sanction more Chinese companies that do business with North Korea, especially banks, U.S. officials have said. (rtr)

In a speech during a military parade for Independence Day, Maduro condemned the “strange” violence in the assembly and asked for an investigation. But he also challenged the opposition to speak out about violence from within its ranks. In daily protests since April, young demonstrators have frequently attacked security forces with stones, homemade mortars and Molotov cocktails, and burned property. They killed one man by dousing him in gasoline and setting him on fire. “I want peace for Venezuela,” Maduro said. “I don’t accept violence from anyone.” FOREIGN CONDEMNATION
Numerous foreign nations repudiated Wednesday’s events. “I condemn the grotesque attack on the Venezuelan assembly,” tweeted UK ambassador John Saville. “This violence, perpetrated during the celebration of Venezuela’s independence, is an assault on the democratic principles cherished by the men and women who struggled for Venezuela’s independence 206 years ago today,” the U.S. State Department said. Venezuela’s opposition is demanding general elections to end socialist rule and solutions to the OPEC nation’s brutal economic crisis. The government says its foes are seeking a violent coup with U.S. support. Earlier, a Venezuelan police officer who staged a helicopter attack on government buildings in Caracas last week appeared in an internet video vowing to continue fighting. “Once again we are in Caracas, ready and willing to continue our struggle for the liberation of our country,” police pilot Oscar Perez said in the video, wearing a military uniform and wool cap, with a Venezuelan flag and rifle behind him. Perez had not been seen since he hijacked a helicopter last week and flew through Caracas pulling a “Freedom” banner. He opened fire and dropped grenades on the Interior Ministry and Supreme Court but nobody was injured. Maduro, 54, the successor to Hugo Chavez, called that attack a terrorist assault to overthrow him and lambasted Western nations for not condemning it. But many government critics doubt the official version, and some even suggested it may have been staged to divert attention from the country’s economic and political crises. In the video, Perez said the attack was “perfectly achieved” with no collateral damage “because it was planned, because we are not murderers like you, Mr. Nicolas Maduro.” Perez said he had staged an emergency landing on the Caribbean coast following the attack, and returned to the capital after hiking through mountains. The Information Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Perez, who has portrayed himself as a James Bond-cum-Rambo figure on social media, also is an actor who starred in a 2015 movie about the rescue of a kidnapped businessman. Although he has claimed wider support within the security forces, Perez’s actions so far appear to be a rogue stunt organized by a small group of disaffected policemen. Venezuela’s opposition says Maduro is seeking to consolidate control through a Constituent Assembly, a superbody that will be elected at the end of July. Singapore repatriates two “radicalised” maids to Indonesia - minister SINGAPORE - Singapore has repatriated two Indonesian maids who were “radicalised” by Islamists using social media, bringing the total number of such cases to 9 since 2015, the second minister for home affairs has said. Authorities in the city-state said last month they had detained the first Singaporean for suspected Islamist radicalism as concern grows about the spread of the Islamic State group in Southeast Asia. The government has reiterated over the past year that the small, wealthy island nation is a target for Islamist groups and has urged the public to be alert. Minister Desmond Lee told parliament on Tuesday the two maids, aged 25 and 28, did not have plans to carry out any violence in Singapore and were not known to have influenced their friends in the country. “Similar to the earlier cases,
both of them were ISIS supporters, radicalised through social media,” Lee said after lawmakers asked for an update on the threat posed by radicalised foreigners in Singapore. Singapore said late last year it had deported nearly 70 foreigners, including five maids, for suspected radicalism over the previous two years. Authorities in neighbouring Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, said last year they had arrested six Indonesian suspects with links to Islamic State who were plotting an attack on Singapore. Worries over the rise of Islamic State were heightened by the capture of Marawi City in the southern Philippines island of Mindanao by Islamist militants in May. Police investigate Indonesian president’s son for blasphemy
JAKARTA — Indonesian police are investigating allegations of blasphemy and hate speech against the youngest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
Police plan to summon Kaesang Pangarep for questioning after receiving a complaint about a video uploaded to YouTube in May, Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono said Thursday. However, local media quoted the deputy national police chief, Syafruddin, as saying on Thursday that there appeared to be no criminal offense involved and the case should be dropped. The nearly three-minute video entitled “Ask Daddy for a Project” — a reference to children of politicians who seek business favors — includes criticism of Indonesians who during recent sectarian tensions in the Muslim-majority nation declared they would refuse
funeral rites for those who supported non-Muslims as leaders. Rights groups have frequently called for Indonesia’s draconian blasphemy law to be repealed. It allows for sentences of up to five years in prison and is often used to attack minorities and political foes. The former governor of Jakarta, a minority Christian, is serving a two-year prison sentence for blasphemy after being sentenced in May following months of protests against him by Islamic hardliners. BUSINESS EU, Japan seal free trade in signal to Trump
BRUSSELS - Japan and the European Union agreed on Thursday to a free trade pact, creating the world’s biggest open economic area and signalling resistance to what they see as U.S. President Donald Trump’s protectionist turn. Signed in Brussels on the eve of meetings with Trump at a summit in Hamburg, the “political agreement” between two economies accounting for a third of global GDP is heavy with symbolism. It leaves some areas of negotiation still to finish, though officials insist the key snags have been overcome. “Ahead of the G20 summit tomorrow, I believe Japan and the EU are demonstrating our strong political will to fly the flag for free trade against a shift toward protectionism,” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a joint news conference with EU institutional chiefs Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker. “It is a strong message to the world.” In the works for four years, it has been pushed over the line towards a final treaty signature in the coming months by the election of Trump and his moves to ditch a Pacific trade pact that included Japan and leave talks with the EU in limbo. “Although some are saying that the time of isolationism and disintegration is coming again, we are demonstrating that this is not the case,” European Council President Tusk said. “There is no protection in protectionism,” added Juncker, the president of the executive European Commission, who played down any suggestion there would be further negotiating problems and said he hoped the treaty could go into effect early in 2019. 76,400 children in Tabanan get JE vaccination
TABANAN — Central government through the ministry of health held the campaign of Japanese encephalitis (JE) immunization. Implementation of this campaign was first performed in the areas of JE endemic or JE-positive where one of which is Bali province. In Tabanan, a total of 76,400 children ranged in the age of 9 months to 15 years are targeted to get this vaccination in October to November 2017.

DENPASAR — Joint team of the Directorate of Narcotic Investigation Unit of Bali Police and the Taskforce of Contra Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC) combed Gilimanuk Harbor on Wednesday (Jun. 28). As a result, the team could arrest the suspect Agus S, 40, in the area of passenger dropping off at Post 2 of Gilimanuk Harbor and a total of 239 grams of crystal meth could be seized. According to Deputy Director of Narcotic Investigation Agency of Bali Police, Sudjarwoko, accompanied by Subdivision Head of Public Information, Ayu Kusuma Dewi, said that on Tuesday (Jul. 4) that disclosure of this case was based on the investigation for a few days earlier. “We

a place according to the order of the drug dealer. “The goods are taken from Jakarta and brought to Bali by land. The suspect admitted to have been given by someone unknown,” he said. When examined, Agus claimed to have smuggled drugs to Bali for three times. He received IDR 5 million for once delivery of crystal meth to Bali. “For the first and second delivery, the weight of crystal meth is almost the same as the current one, namely on the average of 2.5 ounces,” said Sudjarwoko. At least three hurt, 11 missing as heavy rain pounds Japan
TOKYO - One man was dug out of a landslide without any signs of life and two women were injured as record rains battered southwestern Japan for a second day on Thursday, with flooded rivers forcing 400,000 from their homes, officials and media said. At least 11 people were missing or could not be reached, including a child. Parts of Fukuoka prefecture on the southwestern island of Kyushu were hit by 774 mm (30.5 inches) of rain in nine hours on Wednesday, about 2.2 times the amount of rain that falls in a normal July, NHK national television said. Some 7,500 rescuers, including police, firefighters and soldiers from Japan’s Self Defence Forces, were mobilised to help with evacuations and search for the missing. Officials said the military presence could be expanded up to 5,000 people and 50 helicopters if needed. Landslides were reported in several areas. One man was dug out from a landslide in cardiopulmonary arrest and without signs of life, a standard phrase used in Japan until death is confirmed by a doctor, NHK said. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said: “There are many

All operations were stopped at a Daihatsu Motor Co plant in Oita because road conditions stopped staff and parts getting to the plant. KUALA SIN - Prime Minister Najib Razak won Malaysia’s last general election, despite losing the popular vote. Since then, he has been embroiled in a corruption scandal that has been investigated in a half-dozen countries. Yet the avuncular leader with an aristocratic pedigree was still expecting to cruise to another election victory in polls due by mid-2018, maintaining his coalition’s record of unbroken rule since independence in 1957. Now, all bets are off. That’s because his former mentor and prime minister for 22 years, Mahathir Mohamad, who turns 92 next week, has agreed to join a fractured opposition alliance and head the government again if it wins. He would be the world’s oldest prime minister if that happened. Mahathir, along with Najib’s former deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin - fired last year for questioning his boss about the scandal - have formed a new party called Bersatu (Unite). It has opened branches in 165 of parliament’s 222 constituencies, Muhyiddin told Reuters, a feat few opposition parties have managed. During his 1981-2003 rule, Mahathir championed modernisation by switching Malaysia’s focus from plantations and mining to a diversified high-tech manufacturing base on the back of foreign investment. A considerable fan base is excited about his comeback. “I was still young when Mahathir was prime minister. Only Chanel,” Swinton said. The wood-and-steel tower, which took workmen six weeks to make, was a stunning piece of craftsmanship. It copied nearly beam for beam the columns and metal twists of the edifice made by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Universal Exhibition.
CHANEL GOES TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY
The dawn of the 20th century — the period following the Eiffel Tower’s construction — was the creative touchstone for Chanel’s wintery-looking couture. The first model strode out in sunlight filtered by wroughtiron columns to set the tone of the graphic, steel-colored collection. She wore a wide-hipped, charcoal gray coat with exaggerated leg-of-mutton arms — styles that harkened to the Belle Epoque period. This clever historic musing continued with flattened bowler hats and black patent lace-up ankle boots popular before World War I. Flourishing bouquets of plumes then shot out from wrists, ankles and shoulders in evening wear. “In this collection, there are feathers treated like fur,” Lagerfeld explained. But the designer relied on myriad references for a show whose one unifying theme might have been simply the Parisienne. “It’s a vision of a revived Parisian woman. It is all about cut, shapes, silhouettes,” he added. Signature tweed jackets were reimagined as long tunics, or cropped and double-breasted. Then it got arty. Mechanical Art Deco motifs gave a 1920s flair to black froufrou gowns that evoked the paintings of Robert Delaunay. Their frothy, flower embellishments at the hem gave the silhouette a vibrant dynamic. Mini-dresses in tweed, retro bateau collars and bows under the bust mixed in a dash of the 1960s. Thigh-high boots added a hint of contemporary provocation.

Militant Arts: spirit of the land speaks through its children
Although Bali is world-renown for its highly developed artistic traditions that are rooted in religious expressions of the powers of nature, art on the island has been silently flourishing in recent decades. Before the 1930’s nearly all art not the island was created for specifically religious purposes and as many people know, radical changes in techniques, materials and approaches were then brought about by contact with foreign artists, access to new materials and perhaps most importantly to the new concept of art as commodity that tourism encouraged. What fewer people are aware of is that the initial changes that influenced the production of art in Bali have led to all kinds of new approaches to art -many of which remain none the less rooted in ancestral practices. From the widely popular artisanal art works that remain essentially traditional in the sense of not particularly expressing an individual artist’s vision to the rise of recognized artists to group art movements and all manner of exploration in between, art in Bali has been undergoing a renaissance. Partly due to information technology which makes images, techniques, philosophy and styles easily accessible to artists in Bali, partly due to the unending stream of foreign artists who come to work in Bali and partly due to Balinese artists themselves visiting other parts of the archipelago (and the world) and becoming exposed to new ways of looking at the practice of art, a whole new kind of art movement has been developing in recent years. Art movements or groups of artists have been a part of the Balinese art landscape for some time, yet due to the sociocultural particularities of Bali, they have for the most part remained somewhat isolated and some might argue stagnant.
Some people blame the busy ceremonial schedules of Balinese Hindus, the generally insular mentality of the people of this island and the taboos around being overtly critical, for the lack of sustained effort towards building a critical discourse around art. Whatever the reason, there appears to have been a lack of cohesion amongst artists in Bali that might allow for the wealth of talent here to become known to a wider audience. Militant Arts has taken the bold stance of trying to create such cohesion. With 31 members, this artist collective is made up of artists from various different art groups who have been active in producing promoting particular aesthetic and conceptual styles as well as younger artists. They have come together under a single banner with the express purpose of representing the diverse yet unified spirit of contemporary Balinese art. There most recent project: A.T.U.H (Art The Universal Habit), involved some of the members of Militant Arts taking a three day trip to the neighbouring island of Nusa Penida to “refresh their spirits and get some perspective”. Starting with the popular traditional pastime of tirta yatra which is to visit far away temples as a group , Militant Arts prayed together at Pura Dalam Ped, Nusa Penida’s famous temple where Balinese Hindus like to go to get inspiration from the destructive yet renewing spirit of the ocean. They then continued on to Pura Giri Putra located inside a cave up a hill. Nyegoro-gunung or “ocean-mountain” is a concept in Bali that is used to refer to the the cycle that water (as the source of life) goes through from the clouds that form on the ocean, rain down on the mountains, filling the rivers that then flow to the sea. This concept is embodied in various ceremonial practices. Militant Arts’ refreshing journey then continued to Atuh beach which has recently become a popular tourist attraction.

Here they descended a steep cliff to create a 10 foot long painting together on a high precipice under the midday sun. This group-painting, representing the spirit of togetherness that informs their artistic vision, was carried across the island to a beach in town where it was tied like a cape around one of the artists who performed an artistic offering to the sea. The group then brought this painting to an open space where it was set ablaze in a kind of impromptu ritual representing the culmination of their inspirational journey together, a kind of death of this group art work to be born again in the individual arts works of each of the artists present. Their whole journey could be read as a kind of performance art piece that speaks of the development of Balinese art from purely religious, to still community oriented but informed by tourism, to struggling to maintain a connection to the source of life, to becoming devoid of meaning or even existence and then born again in the individual art works displayed in a gallery in Sanur. This journey speaks of the reality that despite great changes to art in Bali, these artists nonetheless remain informed by and expressive of something they feel to be essentially Balinese. Although the art works on display are not cohesive in terms of aesthetics, style, technique, or content, they are however held together by a conceptual framework based on a common process and point of reference: the particular natural setting experienced and the cultural context that inspires and informs the works of these Balinese artists. Militant Arts are militant in their devotion to maintaining their individual artists practices, promoting a distinctly Balinese style of contemporary art and in their determination to reach to the far horizons physically, emotionally and conceptually. A.T.U.H will be on display at Gallery Santrian (Jl. Danau Tamblingan, Sanur) starting July 7th at 19:00 until September 5th, 2017. (kmb)

Rob Kardashian’s Instagram account disappears after outburst LOS ANGELES — Rob Kardashian says Instagram shut down his page on Wednesday following his flurry of posts attacking his former fiancée. Kardashian then brought his tirade to Twitter, accusing fellow reality star Blac Chyna of infidelity, promiscuity and drug use. Earlier in the day, he posted explicit photos of Chyna on Instagram. She responded on Snapchat with a claim that Kardashian had beaten her. The post has since been deleted. Both were top trending topics worldwide on Twitter. Attempts to reach representatives for Kardashian and Chyna were unsuccessful. Instagram released a statement saying: “We value maintaining a safe and supportive space for our community and we work to remove reported content that violates our guidelines.” Kardashian and Chyna announced their engagement in April 2016 and starred in an E! reality show about their relationship. The couple split up a month later. Their daughter, Dream, was born last November. (ap)

Serkis said the conflict between apes and humans at the film’s core was a warning against supremacist ideologies. “If you think your species is better, if you think your type of people or your type of religion or anything that your
set of beliefs is better than someone else’s, then that is the road to ruin,” he said. Serkis’s on-screen antagonist Harrelson, who has experience in dystopian cinema from his role in the “Hunger Games” films, said that he had been a fan of the renewed series before being asked to appear in it. “It was a privilege to be asked to do it. I don’t think it’s that I’m drawn to that (dark sci-fi films), I’m just drawn - some things make sense. Some things you

Venezuelan lawmakers beaten, besieged in latest violence
CARACAS - Pipe-wielding government supporters burst into Venezuela’s opposition-controlled congress on Wednesday, witnesses said, attacking and besieging lawmakers in the latest flare-up of violence during a political crisis. The melee, which injured seven opposition politicians, was another worrying flashpoint in a traumatic last three months for the South American OPEC nation, shaken by opposition protests against socialist President Nicolas Maduro.
At least 90 people have died in the unrest, with fighting and barricades frequently blocking cities across Venezuela. National Assembly president Julio Borges said more than 350 politicians, journalists and guests to the Independence Day session were trapped in the siege that lasted until dusk. “There are bullets, cars destroyed including mine, blood stains around the (congress) palace,” he told reporters. “The violence in Venezuela has a name and surname: Nicolas Maduro.” The crowd had gathered just after dawn outside the building in downtown Caracas, chanting in favor of Maduro, witnesses said. In the late morning, several dozen people ran past the gates with pipes, sticks and stones and went on the attack. Several injured lawmakers stumbled bloodied and dazed around the assembly’s corridors. Some journalists were robbed. After the morning attack, a crowd
of roughly 100 people, many dressed in red and shouting “Long Live The Revolution!”, trapped people inside for hours, witnesses said. Some in the crowd outside the legislature brandished pistols, threatened to cut water and power supplies, and played an audio of former socialist president Hugo Chavez saying “Tremble, oligarchy!” Fireworks were thrown inside. The worst-hurt lawmaker, Americo De Grazia, was hit on the head, fell unconscious, and was eventually taken by stretcher to an ambulance.
