Popular Australian DJ dies in accident on Bali holiday SYDNEY - Popular Australian DJ Adam Neat has died on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali after reportedly crashing through a glass door while trying to help an injured friend.

“It is with great regret that we can confirm Adam Neat was involved in a fatal accident while trying to help a friend who had suffered multiple fractures in Bali on Saturday,” according to a post on his official Facebook page, which has more than 900,000 followers.

Neat, who performed as Adam Sky, was based in Singapore and was regularly ranked in the top three Asiabased DJs, according to his website.

National broadcaster ABC said Neat, 42, was believed to have severed an artery in his arm when he crashed through a glass door as he rushed to help a female friend who fell from a balcony at the resort where they were staying. (afp)

‘Avengers’ blast past ‘Titanic’ to all-time No. 2

LOS ANGELES - Disney and Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” has stormed into historic territory, earning $2.19 billion worldwide in less than two weeks to become the No. 2 film of all time, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

That exalted number, which includes the film’s estimated take of $145.8 million this three-day weekend in North America, pushes the superhero blockbuster past “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which netted $2.07 billion, and even “Titanic” ($2.18 billion).

Only “Avatar” ($2.79 billion) has done better. Yet “Avengers” hit its record total in just 11 days, taking in a stunning $575.8 million in China alone.

Hollywood analysts predict a long run for “Avengers,” which drew a rare 96 percent rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website and features a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans,

Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper and Josh Brolin.

Trailing “Avengers” by several light years, rival studios still managed to place new films in the next three box-office spots.

Sony’s psychological thriller “The Intruder” came in second, at $11 million. Michael Ealy and Meagan Good star as a young couple who buy a dream home in California’s Napa Valley unaware that its previous owner (Dennis Quaid) plans to take it back -- at all costs.

In third was Lionsgate’s romantic comedy “Long Shot,” at $10 million.

Seth Rogen plays Fred Flarsky, an outof-work journalist who has a romantic

interest in his former babysitter (Charlize Theron) who -- now a candidate for the US presidency -- might seem a bit out of his reach.

STX Films’ animated film “UglyDolls” placed fourth, at $8.5 million.

The plot? A bunch of misfit dolls with pointy ears and bad teeth -residents of Uglyville -- face a harsh world but finally discover their inner beauty. The voices of Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Wanda Sykes and Janelle Monae are featured.

In fifth place, hanging strong in its ninth week out, was Disney’s “Captain Marvel,” at $4.3 million. Brie Larson stars as a former fighter pilot who gains superpowers. (afp)

41 dead as Russian plane bursts into flames on landing

A Russian passenger plane erupted in a huge ball of fire and black smoke after making an emergency landing at Moscow’s busiest airport, killing 41 people including at least two children.

Dramatic footage that went viral on social media showed Aeroflot’s Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft crashlanding and then speeding along the runway at Sheremetyevo international airport on Sunday, flames pouring from its fuselage.

Passengers could be seen leaping onto an inflatable slide at the front and running from the blazing plane as huge black columns of smoke billowed into the sky.

Investigators said 41 people had died. “There were 78 people including crew members on board the plane,” which was bound for the northwestern city of Murmansk, Russia’s Investigative Committee

said in a statement.

“According to the updated info which the investigation has as of now, 37 people survived.” Eleven people were injured, Dmitry Matveyev, the Moscow region’s health minister said earlier in the day.

- ‘Horror before our eyes’ Witness Alyona Osokina said she was inside the terminal when she suddenly saw a plane on fire rushing along the runway. “The blaze was devouring the plane,” she told Rain TV. Osokina said that fire engines had arrived quickly but could not immediately put out the blaze.

“This horror and tragedy happened before our eyes,” she said, adding that those who managed to flee the plane then walked towards the airport. “I believe they were in a state of deep shock.”

The jet -- carrying 73 passengers and five crew members -- left Sheremetyevo at 6:02 pm (1502 GMT), and the crew issued a distress signal shortly afterwards, officials said. “After the take-off, the crew reported an anomaly and decided to come back to the departure airport. At 6:30 pm, the aircraft made an emergency landing,” the airport said in a statement.

Aeroflot, Russia’s flagship carrier, said the plane had to return to the airport “due to a technical reason” and its engines caught fire upon landing. Previous reports had

said the fire broke out in mid-air.

The jet reportedly managed to land on its second attempt, hitting the ground with its landing gear first and then its nose.

Flight tracking site Flightradar24 showed the jet looping once in the air before landing. The plane’s fuel tanks were full and a much bigger death toll could have been a real possibility, aviation experts said. Investigators said they were looking into various lines of inquiry and it was premature to draw any conclusions about the cause of the accident.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences to the victims’ loved ones and said the investigation “should be as thorough as possible”, according to the Kremlin. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered a special com-

mittee to investigate the disaster.

The Murmansk region -- where many of the casualties are believed to be from -- will go into a threeday period of mourning beginning Monday. Some flights have been diverted to other Moscow airports or Nizhny Novgorod, some 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of the Russian capital. Numerous Aeroflot flights are expected to be affected in the coming days.

Overstaying foreigners fined

Badung Tourism claims it affects tourist visits

Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, confirmed the rules that apply to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. This policy is to provide a deterrent effect to foreigners staying beyond

the time limit. However, this policy having been implemented since May 2019 is a challenge to Badung district to develop tourism.

“This rule can affect tourist visits because there are many individual

foreigners making a visit even though it is good for a deterrent effect,” said Made Badra on Sunday (May 5).

Meanwhile, foreigners coming in groups, according to this bureaucrat from Kuta, make a visit by using a travel agency and their permission or limit of overstay will be reminded by the travel company.

“Then, they would be better going to Singapore than to Indonesia because the individuals are not necessarily all wealthy. Just imagine if

the individual is absorbed in spending holiday, and 1 week late, he will be fined at IDR 7 million,” he said.

Moreover, said Made Badra, the cost to Singapore is not too expensive.

The amount of IDR 7 million will be able to extend his permit for 30 days.

“We think that the fine of one million per day is very expensive,” he said.

He explained with today’s technology, most tourists have already known the market and the purpose of their vacation, so that many tour-

ists make personal visits.

“Regardless the packages being promoted, they may come in couple and individual. Previously, tourists like those from China to Indonesia, especially Bali, made a visit in many groups,” he explained.

On that account, he hoped the regulation can be reviewed by related parties, moreover, if promoted abroad. “Hopefully, this regulation will not affect tourist visits,” he concluded. (kmb27)

A million species risk extinction, are we one of them?

Drawing from 15,000 sources and an underlying 1,800-page report, the executive summary details how our species’ growing footprint and appetites have compromised the natural renewal of resources that sustain civilisation, starting with fresh water, breathable air, and productive soil.

- A vicious cycle -

An October report from the UN’s climate science panel painted a similarly dire picture for global warming, and likewise highlighted the need for social transformation “on an unprecedented scale” to cap the rise in temperature at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit).

The global thermometer has already gone up by 1C, and on current trends will rise another 3C by century’s end. Climate change and biodiversity loss, it turns out, feed off each other in a vicious cycle.

Deforestation and industrial agriculture are major drivers of species and ecosystem decline, but also account for at least a quarter of manmade greenhouse gas emissions.

Trees release planet-warming carbon dioxide when cut down, and the destruction each year of tropical forests covering an area the size of England shrinks the vegetal sponge that helps to absorb it.

Global warming, in turn, is pushing thousands of animals and plants out of their comfort zones, and intensifies the kind of heatwaves and droughts that recently fuelled unprecedented fires in Australia, Indonesia, Russia, Portugal, California and Greece.

for policy conflict too, the new report cautioned.

Plans to green the global economy reserve a crucial role for burning biofuels and locking away the CO2 released, a technology known as BECCS. But the huge tracts of land needed to grow energy crops on this scale -- roughly twice the size of India -- would clash with the expansion of protected areas and reforestation efforts, not to mention food production.

Global warming is third on the list, but is likely to move up.

“We can see the climate change signal getting stronger really, really quickly,” IPBES co-chair Sandra Diaz, a professor at the National University of Cordoba in Argentina, told AFP. Numbers four and five are pollution -- 400 million tonnes of heavy metals, toxic sludge and other waste are dumped into oceans and rivers each year -- and alien species, such as rats, mosquitoes, snakes and plants that hitch rides on ships or planes.

“There are also two big indirect drivers of biodiversity loss and climate change -- the number of people in the world and their growing ability to consume,” said Watson.

The heavily negotiated text does not set benchmarks for progress or “last chance” deadlines for action, as does the 2018 climate report.

Nor is the panel mandated to make explicit policy recommendations.

But it does point unmistakably to actions needed: reduce meat consumption, halt deforestation in tropical countries, discourage luxury consumption, slash perverse subsidies, embrace the concept of a low-growth economy.

The report will “serve as a basis for redefining our objectives” ahead of a key meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in China in October 2020, said co-author Yunne Jai Shin, a scientist at the Research Institute for Development in Marseilles. (afp)

From plastic waste collection movement, Yogi founds waste bank

PARIS - Humanity is rapidly destroying the natural world upon which our prosperity -and ultimately our survival -- depends, according to a landmark UN assessment of the state of Nature released Monday.

Changes wrought by decades of pillaging and poisoning forests, oceans, soil and air threaten society “at least as much as climate change,” said Robert Watson, who chaired the 132-nation meeting that validated a Summary for Policymakers forged by 450 experts.

One million animal and plant species face extinction, many within decades, they reported.

Alarmingly, the accelerating pace at which unique life-forms are disappearing -- already tens to hundreds of times faster than during the last ten million years -- could tip Earth into the first mass extinction since nonavian dinosaurs died out 66 million years ago.

In the short term, humans are not at risk, said Josef Settele, a professor at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Germany and co-chair of the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

“In the longer term, it is hard to say,” he told AFP. “If humans do go extinct, Nature will find its way, it always does.”

Halting and reversing these dire trends will require “transformative change” -- a sweeping overhaul of the way we produce and consume almost everything, especially food, the report concluded.

“We are eroding the very foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality-oflife worldwide,” said Watson.

“By transformative change, we mean a fundamental, system-wide reorganisation.”

The pushback from “vested interests,” he added, is likely to be fierce.

These award-winning photographs capture rarely seen wildlife and landscapes

THE winners of the California Academy of Sciences’ annual nature photography competition went to great lengths — and heights and depths — to create unique images of wildlife around the world.

These images “convey science to the general public in a way that is compelling and digestible,” says California-based wildlife photographer Suzi Eszterhas, who chaired the committee of judges that selected eight winners out of more than 6,500 submissions from 67 countries.

“Statistics and graphs are great — but there’s nothing like the power of a visual to help people understand the natural world,” she says.

Photographer and marine biologist Audun Rikardsen, who won the 2019 grand prize in the competition, says “science and photography are just a perfect combination for me.” Rikardsen, who studies whales and fish migration at the University of Tromsø in Norway, says he often brings camera equipment along on research trips. “Really it’s a win-win,” he says. “My scientific knowledge helps me better understand and photograph wildlife, and then my pictures really get people interested in my research.” Although Rikardsen is a prolific underwater photographer, his photo of a male black grouse won him the top prize this year.

He got the shot after more than three years of habitually visiting a particular perch along Norway’s northern coast, where he set up a motion-activated camera.

The grouse in his winning image quickly grew comfortable with the noise of the camera’s shut-

ter and flash, Rikardsen says, even appearing to bask in the attention.

Other winning finalists depict a Galapagos marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) grazing underwater, a rarely seen underwater view of a brown bear fishing for salmon, and more.

Though not all wildlife photographers daylight as biologists, many, including Eszterhas, work closely with scientists to track and photograph rare species and rarely seen animal behaviors, as well as the scientific process.

“I spent a lot of time following a sloth researcher all over South and Central America, for example, and photographed her attaching tracking devices to the sloths, because it’s important for people to see these scientific projects,” Eszterhas says.

Science educators depend on these images to teach ecology, says Rhonda Rubinstein, creative director at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

“Wildlife photographers are really unsung heroes, if you think of how far they push themselves — they’ll spend weeks, months or even years in extreme environments, just to capture a certain species,” she says.

Rubinstein, who helped launch the nature photography competition, called BigPicture, in 2014, says that she hopes the winning images will fuel conservation efforts. “People credit the first photo of Earth from space with helping really launch the modern environmental movement,” she says. “When you see the animals in this year’s photographs, you start to care about them, you want to find out their story and you want to protect them.” (net)

DENPASAR — Although Denpasar is a city having a high level of pluralism and prone to crime and promiscuity, it has given birth to powerful generation that cares about their natural environment.

Made Yogi Arya Dwiputra, 31, a native of Pedungan, does not only move to collect plastic waste, but also takes action to deal with plastic waste. Yogi began to empower the community to collect garbage in the waste bank. This effort began in 2018.

He invited the public to save garbage at the waste bank which he named Bina Lulu Sejahtera.

Initially, the man who also works as a lawyer along with his friends campaigned to reduce the use of plastic waste by taking plastic garbage.

This action continued to invite many sympathizers, especially young people, to join in. Various communities and organizations care about the environment also participate in his institution. Moreover, the massive movement caring about plastic waste that he does used to be viral.

But lately, he began to think of making a concrete manifestation by reducing the use of plastic waste by empowering people to collect plastic waste in his waste bank. It is a movement having been echoed for a long time. However, in this waste bank, he inserted health benefits in saving waste, considering that health insurance is needed in the present era.

Previously, he had a cooperative

named Bina Sejahtera Cooperative, established seven years ago. But his concern for the environment made him determined to take real action by making a waste bank. Principle of the waste bank is almost the same as the cooperative he owns.

But what is exchanged in a waste bank is plastic waste. So, people are interested in collecting and sorting plastic waste and then can be exchanged in the form of money savings and health insurance.

He collaborated with the Medika Pedungan Clinic. The waste bank customers joining in the health insurance program will have a healthy savings and family card that can be used for treatment at the clinic. In addition, customers can also borrow loans with a maximum limit of IDR 3,000,000, but must have savings of 10 percent of the desired loan amount. The bank’s concept is really implemented in the Bina Lulu Sejahtera Waste Bank.

Plastic waste is divided into two types, namely blue bottles worth IDR 2,500 per kg and clear bottles worth IDR 3,000 per kg.

Furthermore, the movement of collecting and sorting plastic waste is also transmitted to schools. The response of school children is quite positive.

BEING one of the junior high schools at the eastern end of Jembrana district, SMPN 2 Pekutatan strives not to be outdone by other equivalent schools. Moreover, with the current zoning system, all schools strive to be the same. The borders between superior and inferior schools have been eliminated.

Application of discipline, cleanliness and concern for nature and others are instilled in students through school environment. With an area of almost two hectares, the school accommodating students in the area of Pangyangan village, Gumbrih to Pekutatan village is arranging the school environment by utilizing the existing plants.

Having vast land, it takes time and energy to keep it clean. Such vast land also makes this school be able to accommodate up to 300 students so it does not yet apply multi-tiered classrooms.

Even though he admitted there are several buildings having been damaged, such as the Guidance and Counseling (BP) building and others, it is not considered a problem. Precisely with a healthy, clean and organized school environment, the shortcomings are covered. Currently, this school has also implemented full day school. Especially on Friday the students carry out activities outside the classroom with a number

of extracurricular activities such as arts, sports, reading books and newspapers (literacy) and other activities utilizing existing areas.

Productive plants growing around the school area such as coconut are also used for the management of large areas. Yield of the coconut plants, such as fruit and leaves, is used for the maintenance of a wide enough football field. Other useful plants such as medicinal plants and fruits can also be found around the school area. Arrangement of this beautiful land received a positive response from the local government.

The school located at the end of the district border this year is appointed to represent the district, becoming a child-friendly school.

According to him, this title is not necessarily easily obtained because a large enough area requires routine maintenance and discipline. Moreover, schools are only limited to having garden workers or school security guard so that the active participation of all school residents is quite needed. (olo)

Coconut potential of Lumbung Kauh village

The Pakistani popcorn seller who built his own plane

Due to marketing problem, demand for VCO products stagnant TABANAN - Lumbung Kauh village in West Selemadeg has a total area of 730.67 hectares. Of this area around 50 percent are coconut plantations in addition to other plantation crops such as durian, mangosteen, clove, coffee and banana. Because of this coconut potential, Lumbung Kauh village is included in the village area coalesced into the Nikosake (Indigo, Coffee, Snakefruit and Coconut). Unfortunately, coconut production to be processed into more valuable products for sale today is still limited due to marketing constraints. As a result, the demand for coconut products in the form of VCOs managed by BUMDEs at Lambung Kauh village is still stagnant.

Secretary of Lumbung Kauh village, Wayan Suarsa, stated on Sunday (May 5) that most of the residents of Lumbung Kauh village work as farmers. Coconut is currently being appraised by collectors at IDR 4,000 per piece. So, farmers are eager to pick up their coconut.

“It is different if price of coconut falls. Their coconut will be left as it is so that it is wasted,” he said.

Processing coconut into an end product is actually one solution if the price of coconut drops to the lowest price. Even though it has been processed into VCO, Suarsa admitted it cannot absorb much of the coconut production at Lumbung Kauh village. The VCO product of Lumbung Kauh village has been developed by the local BUMDes so that it can be sold through BUMDA. Unfortunately, it still has problem in the matter of poor quality and packaging so that mar-

keting cannot be extended to outlets making cooperation with BUMDA. “The demand for VCO produced by Lumbung Kauh village is currently uncertain because the processing is still manual and natural so the quality and packaging are still unable to compete against other VCO products,” explained Suarsa.

Suarsa hoped that the inclusion of Lumbung Kauh village in the Nikosake area will add the value to coconut farming as well as the existence of training assistance on processing coconut products other than VCO as well as the assistance of facilities and infrastructure.

“We have a goal to process VCO into cosmetic products but still lack knowledge and equipment.

Although there are village funds, the number is inadequate and still focuses on infrastructure. So, we hope from this Nikosake program,” said Suarsa.

According to him, from the Nikosake program, the main spot will be planned to be the center of agro-tourism activities at Lumbung Kauh village. Later, location of the main spot with the Coconut Village theme will take place near the Balian River and the pristine Pangkung Sakti waterfall background.

As planned, at the Coconut Village will be taken advantage for educational place of coconut gardens, how to process and enjoy coconut processing such as snacks, nata de coco, VCO along with derivatives such as masks, aroma therapy and lotions. For this reason, a hall will be provided at the main spot that will serve as an education and training center for processing coconut. (kmb24)

TABANAN - To optimize the museum management, this year the central government disburses a non-physical Special Allocation Fund (DAK) worth IDR 450 million. This fund from the Ministry of Education and Culture will be used to finance three components, where one of which is for the study and conservation of three collections namely Tika, Okokan and Janggi.

Chief of the Subak Museum Management, Ida Ayu Nyoman Ratna Pawitrani, said that the fund is given because the museum with public services is expected to be able to introduce and promote local culture and shape the nation’s character. The fund goes down to all government-operated museums in Indonesia and depends on the type of museum. Subak Museum in Tabanan district itself based on the standards of museum is categorized into regional museum of type C. “Other than museums, cultural parks are also given, but there are no cultural parks in Tabanan. These funds are for operational assistance in organizing the museums,” she explained on Sunday (May 5).

For the subak museum, continued Dayu Ratna, the funds will be used for financing three components namely management of collection, study of collection and conservation. There are three collections to

be tested, namely tika (Balinese traditional calendar made of wood), okokan and janggi (coconut shell whose lower part is given a small hole for timer and sanction gauges for subak members—Ed), and will continue with the holding of discussions. “This study is to find out what the philosophy is, its usage and other special things,” she explained.

Regarding the conservation, the collection will be given fumigation and injection of bamboo. Besides, it will include financing for public programs to be packaged in the activities of photo and painting exhibitions about subak, dissemination of subak museum, study together at museums and visiting museum program. The program goes to school is planned to target one high school in each sub-district. Additionally, the budget is also for financing the maintenance of facilities and infrastructure. “Here, there will only be minor improvements in the museum

because this fund is focused on nonphysical aspect,” she explained.

Dayu Ratna added the number of visits until April 2019 was still dominated by domestic tourists and most of the visitors came in group. “Every day, there are always foreign tourists on average of 5 to 10 people. In short, the visit is still dominated by domestic tourists,” she concluded.

As is known, the subak museum located at Sanggulan Tabanan has always been the main attraction for students. They want to know about the traditional irrigation system in Bali, especially in Tabanan district.

With a land area of 6.28 hectares, the land of the subak museum is an asset of the provincial government.

Guns outnumber guests at bombed Sri Lanka hotel

COLOMBO - At the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, one of six Sri Lankan targets hit by suicide bombers on Easter Sunday, the silence that reigns is not just the usual hush of a plush hotel.

Recently reopened, barely 10 of its 500 luxury rooms are occupied -- down from the 300 usual at this time of year -- as fears rise over the impact of the bombings on the island nation’s burgeoning tourism industry.

On April 21, the Cinnamon was one of three hotels hit by jihadi bombers along with three churches in attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that left 257 people dead. Around 9:10 am that day, Sri Lankan Inshaf Ibrahim, who had checked into the Cinnamon the day before, went to the breakfast buffet in the hotel’s Taprobane restaurant.

Then he set off the bomb in his backpack, killing twenty people.

The bomber’s brother Ilham Ibrahim died while attacking the Shangri-La hotel, also in Colombo.

Now, to get into the marblefloored lobby of the Cinnamon, visitors must pass through two security checks as a new X-ray machine scans bags. Armed soldiers outnumber guests.

The government expects visitor numbers to dive 30 percent this year and for Sri Lanka to need up to two years for the tourism sector to recover.

TABUR - The engine is from a roadcutter, the wings are burlap, the wheels are borrowed from a rickshaw: a popcorn seller has caught the attention of the Pakistan Air Force by building his own plane.

The tale of Muhammad Fayyaz has captured the hearts of many in a nation where millions, just like him, have limited access to education and are fighting for opportunities.

“I was literally in the air. I couldn’t feel anything else,” Fayyaz said of his first flight in a machine he learned to build mainly from viewing TV clips and online blueprints.

Pakistan has been thrilled before by stories of scientific prodigies plucked from obscurity before -notably, that of the engineer who said in 2012 that he had invented a car that could run on water -- a story that was later debunked by scientists.

But Fayyaz insists he flew and his claim is being taken seriously by the air force, whose representatives have now visited him multiple times, even issuing a certificate to commend his work, he revealed.

There has been a steady stream of visitors wanting to view his creation, which now sits in the empty courtyard of his three-room home in the village of Tabur in central Punjab province.

- Dreaming of a jet plane The 32-year-old said he had dreamed of joining the air force as a child, but his father died while he was in still in school, forcing him to drop out at the eighth grade and do odd jobs to feed his mother and

his five younger siblings.

As an adult, his passion for flying remained undiminished, so he took a wild gamble on a new dream and put everything he had into creating his own craft.

By day he worked as a popcorn seller, by night as a security guard, saving every rupee he could.

The first thing he had to acquire was information -- beginning with watching episodes of the National Geographic Channel’s Air Crash Investigation for insight into thrust, air pressure, torque, propulsion.

Cheap internet access in a nearby city helped fill the gaps, with Fayyaz claiming he spliced blueprints of planes he found online for his own creation.

He sold a piece of family land, and took out a 50,000 rupee ($350) loan from a micro-finance NGO, which he is still paying off.

He used his meagre funds creatively, buying burlap sacks wholesale and persuading a kind workshop employee who had seen him scouting for materials to build him a propeller.

There was trial and error. Some equipment needed to be replaced, designs had to be altered, the wiring had to be reworked.

His family worried he was obsessed.

“I kept telling him to stop. I kept telling him to concentrate on his family and work, he was being crazy over nothing. But he didn’t listen to a single word,” his mother, Mumtaz Bibi, recalled.

But Fayyaz kept going. And, at the end of it all produced a plane -- tiny, fragile, and painted a bright blue. (afp)

EU warns Turkey against drilling off Cyprus EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini on Saturday urged Turkey to reconsider plans to start exploratory drilling for oil and gas off Cyprus, already condemned as illegal by the European Union.

“We express grave concern over Turkey’s announced intention to carry out drilling activities within the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus,” Mogherini said in a statement.

“In March 2018, the European Council strongly condemned Turkey’s continued illegal actions in the Eastern Mediterranean,” she added.

“In this context, we urgently call on Turkey to show restraint,” she added, warning that the EU would “respond appropriately to any illegal action that violated Cyprus’s rights”.

On Friday Turkey sent out a message on NAVTEX, the international maritime navigational telex system, announcing its vessels would be carrying out drilling operations in the Mediterranean until September.

According to reports in Cypriot media, the operation will encroach on Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone.

Turkey’s foreign ministry rejected Mogherini’s comments and said its drilling was based on “legitimate rights”.

In a statement, it accused the government of Cyprus of “irresponsibly jeopardising the security and stability of the Eastern Mediterranean region, by disregarding the inalienable rights of the Turkish Cypriots,” which it described as “co-owners” of the island’s natural resources.

Cyprus on Saturday “strongly condemned” Turkey’s move.

“This provocative action by Turkey constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus according to International and European Union Law,” a Cyprus Foreign Ministry statement said.

It added that it had “taken all necessary measures to address the situation”.

The government of the Republic of Cyprus only controls two-thirds of the Mediterranean island, the northern third of which is controlled by a Turkish-backed breakaway administration.

Turkey first announced it would be drilling for oil and gas off Cyprus back in February.

The discovery of gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean has prompted claims by the internationally recognised Greek Cypriot government and Ankara.

European Union member Cyprus has been pressing to develop offshore gas deposits and has signed deals with energy giants Eni, Total and ExxonMobil that have seen them carry out exploratory drilling.

verse voters’ 2016 decision to leave.

They point to big gains in the local elections for the anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats and Greens parties as evidence the public would welcome a second referendum.

Labour economy spokesman John McDonnell said Sunday that the party would try to “come to an agreement if we can” with the Conservatives. But he said Labour would only agree to a Brexit deal that included a permanent customs union with the EU to avoid barriers to trade. The government wants a looser relationship with the bloc that would let Britain strike new trade deals around the world.

McDonnell also said the Conservative Party’s leadership machinations have made negotiations difficult.

“We’re dealing with a very unstable government,” McDonnell told the BBC. “It’s (like) trying to enter into a contract with a company that’s going into administration and the people who are going to take over are not willing to fulfil that contract. We can’t negotiate like that.” (ap)

Myth Regarding Batu Medawu Temple in Nusa Penida

Peak of the temple festival or piodalan at Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida, took place on January 30. After holding the bhakti penganyar, the series of the temple festival was closed on Saturday (Feb. 2). There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated on Friday (Jan. 2) the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east.

In addition to the pilgrims coming

from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat.

In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

“Bathara Toh Langkir knows such desire, so that he made I Renggan unable to control the boat and fall asleep. The boat was

stranded in Manggis, Karangasem and crashed into an island there. Finally, the island split and becomes small islands as we see now around Padangbai,” said Jero Mangku.

The priest added that due to his failure, he tried to return to Nusa Penida through the eastern part of the island. When trying to tether the boat, apparently it was not completely under control. Even, it passed to the beach and split the rock mound in the eastern part of the island. In short, the ruin of I Renggan’s boat was made a place of worship currently known as the Batu Medawu Temple.

The story is further strengthened by a symbol in the form of building resembling a boat’s rear part depicting a boat splitting a rock mound.

This building can be seen in the Batu Medawu Temple, precisely in the Segara Temple. Batu Medawu Temple serves as a holy place to ask for wisdom, unlike the Dalem Ped functioned to invoke strength. (kmb)

Thrust reverser ‘not working’ on Florida plane that crashed in river

MIAMI - A feature that helps aircraft slow down on landing was broken on a Boeing 737 that skidded into a river in Florida, a top transportation safety official said Sunday.

The plane carrying 143 people slid off the runway after a hard landing Saturday at a naval air station in Jacksonville during a lightning storm.

Police said 21 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries but no fatalities or critical injuries were reported.

Transport safety officials said one of the thrust reversers which are supposed to help to slow the aircraft down was not working.

“The aircraft had been in maintenance and the maintenance log noted that the left-hand thrust reverser was inoperative,” Bruce Landsberg, vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters Sunday.

He said investigators would be examining the maintenance of the aircraft in the weeks prior to the accident “and the condition of the thrust reversers will obviously be of interest.”

The pilot also requested a change of runway, landing on one air traffic

control advised had naval equipment on it, reducing the available runway length by 1,200 feet, Landsberg said.

“We don’t know what they were thinking or why they made that choice. That will be one of the things we look to find out, as we go through the cockpit voice recorder,” he said.

The flight data recorder had been recovered but the cockpit voice recorder remained underwater in the tail of the aircraft.

“When we recover it will give us much more information on what the crew was thinking,” he said.

Thunderstorms and lightning have been hampering efforts to retrieve the plane fuselage.

The navy had arranged for divers to recover several pets which are believed to have drowned in the cargo hold, he said.

‘Nito’ Cortizo: cattle rancher and veteran of Panama politics

PANAMA CITY - Social democrat Laurentino Cortizo, who won Sunday’s presidential election in Panama, is a veteran politician and former agriculture minister of the small Central American country.

The 66-year-old businessman and cattle rancher, popularly known as “Nito,” will serve a single five-year term as head of state of a nation famed for its canal but also notorious for its financial sector which is accused of providing a haven for international tax evasion.

The terse and stern-looking Cortizo, who campaigned on an anticorruption ticket, has said he wants to “rescue and transform Panama” and leave a legacy untainted by graft.

He briefly served as agriculture minister in the government of president Martin Torrijos (2004-2009).

Corizo resigned after just 15 months in the government because he opposed concessions to relax health standards during negotiations for the US-Panama free trade agreement, which was signed in 2007.

Passionate about improving cattle breeds, he is known for his hand-on approach, helping with milking, vaccinating and tending to his herd.

Cortizo, who focused his campaign on the fight against inequality, is praised by supporters for his humility and social sensitivity.

Opponents however accuse him of being surrounded by lawmakers embroiled in corruption scandals.

To them, Cortizo insists that no one will be “untouchable” during his term in office.

He also pledged to create ministries of culture and women, to make agriculture an affair of state, and to punish companies guilty of corruption.

“I want to leave a legacy” in the history of Panama, says Cortizo, who managed to return the PRD to power after 10 years in the political wilderness.

Indonesia sinks 51 foreign boats to fight against poaching JAKARTA — Indonesian authorities resumed their tough stance against illegal fishing in the country’s waters by sinking 51 foreign ships Saturday, as the government ramps up efforts to exert greater control over its vast maritime territory.

The seized ships were sunk at five ports across the archipelago, which has some of the world’s richest fishing grounds, the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry said in a statement.

The seized vessels sunk included 38 Vietnameseflagged ships, 6 Malaysian, 2 Chinese and 1 Filipino.

The rest were foreign-owned ships using Indonesian flag.

Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said in a speech that the illegal boats were a threat to the local fishing industry. Their operators are frequently perpetrators of modern day slavery.

“This crime of illegal fishing in our waters was out of mind,” Pudjiastuti said. “We can’t tolerate anymore.”

Saturday’s events were carried out in a low-key fashion compared with previous occasions, when boats were blown to pieces and their destruction broadcast live.

A video taken off Datuk island in West Kalimantan province and released by the ministry showed Pudjiastuti and other fishery officers scrambling to an adjacent boat from a sinking vessel that had been filled with sand and flooded. She clapped her hands when she saw several ships successfully sunk.

The move came a week after an Indonesian navy patrol ship was rammed by two Vietnamese coast guard ships after intercepting a boat it says was fishing illegally in its waters. The Vietnamese claimed that the area was Vietnamese waters.

Indonesia detained 12 Vietnamese fishermen from the boat, which sank in last Saturday’s clash, and they are being held at a naval base on Natuna island.

Indonesian government says it has sunk more than 500 illegal fishing vessels since October 2014, many with explosives.

Last year, the ministry sunk 125 mostly foreign vessels, included 86 Vietnamese-flagged ships, 20 Malaysian and 14 from the Philippines.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, claims a huge exclusive economic zone, which is frequently penetrated by foreign fishing vessels. Its northerly reaches are regarded by China as its traditional fishing grounds despite their distance from the Chinese mainland. (ap)

Lion Air pilot grounded after beating hotel clerk over ironing A pilot for Indonesia’s Lion Air who beat a hotel clerk because he was unhappy with how his uniform was ironed has been grounded, the airline said Friday.

Marathon man Kipchoge to again target two-hour barrier

PARIS - Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge will again target the mythical two-hour marathon barrier in a special race to be held between late September and early October, likely in London.

Kipchoge went close to smashing the barrier when he came in 25 seconds off the mark in a staged race around Italy’s Monza race circuit in 2017.

“Running the fastest ever marathon time of 2:00:25 was the proudest moment of my career,” Kipchoge said.

“To get another chance to break the magical two-hour mark is incredibly exciting. I always say that no human is limited, and I know that it is possible for me to break this barrier.”

Kipchoge, 34, last week won his fourth London marathon, has now won 11 of the 12 marathons he’s contested and set a world record of 2:01:39 when winning the Berlin marathon in 2018.

“I learnt a lot from my previous attempt and I truly believe that I can go 26 seconds faster than I did in Monza two years ago,” he said.

The venue for the “INEOS 1:59 Challenge” is still to be decided, with a number of options that offer a flat-looped circuit being investigated for the event.

Murray, Leonard shine as Nuggets and Raptors level playoff series

LOS ANGELES - Jamal Murray scored 34 points, including six clutch free throws down the stretch to lift the Denver Nuggets to a gritty 116-112 NBA playoff win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Canadian Murray combined with Serbian Nikola Jokic to form a dynamic scoring duo as the Nuggets squared their second round Western Conference series at two games each.

It was a quick turnaround from the Trail Blazers’ 140-137 quadruple overtime victory in Friday’s game three.

Game four didn’t last nearly as long as that three hour, 35 minute marathon, but it was another back-and-forth battle highlighted

by Murray’s precision shooting and a fourth playoff triple-double from Jokic.

“The biggest part was mental,” said Murray on playing two playoff games just 40 hours apart. “We know what to do physically but that was a draining game and we had to come back with energy and face a great team.

“We were able to get what we wanted on offence and the stops on defense.”

Jokic had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his second

straight triple-double and Murray, who led all scorers, was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line for Denver, who handed Portland their first playoff loss at home this season. Two free throws by Murray increased the Nuggets’ edge to 112108 with 13 seconds on the clock.

After Damian Lillard scored on a layup with 7.7 seconds remaining, Murray hit a pair of free throws to make it 114-110 with 6.7 seconds to play.

CJ McCollum scored on a long two-point shot to cut it to 114-112 with 4.4 seconds to go, but Murray clinched it with another pair at the line with 3.4 seconds left.

“I love free throws,” said Murray, the son of Jamaican immigrants who moved to Kitchener, Ontario where he was born. “Everybody knows I love free throws. My team trusts me.”

Said Nuggets coach Mike Malone, “Jamal has got a tremendous amount of grit. You think about how young we are and going on the road to win a tough game four in a hostile environment. For Jamal to be a centrepiece of that is phenomenal.”

McCollum had 29 points and Lillard added 28 for the Trail Blazers. Game five is Tuesday at Denver.

Elsewhere, Kawhi Leonard scored 39 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to propel the Toronto Raptors to a 101-96 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers that knotted their Eastern Conference series at two games apiece.

Spanish center Marc Gasol added 16 points and Kyle Lowry contributed 14 for the Raptors, who held ailing Sixers center Joel Embiid to 11 points on two-of-seven shooting from the field. The Raptors will try to seize a series lead when the action shifts back to Toronto for game five on Tuesday.

After losing back-to-back games, Leonard said the Raptors’ mindset was to “come in and play hard”.

“The whole team concept was coming in and playing harder, being smarter and take your shots,” Leonard said. “We needed it. This is a big win, but we’ve got to come back and get it for game five.”

Leonard scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a first half that finished with the Raptors holding a narrow 47-45 lead.

It was the first time in his career that he notched at least 15 points and 10 rebounds in a half.

After seven lead changes in the third quarter, the increasingly physical encounter was tied 75-75 heading into the fourth.

The Raptors were clinging to a 91-90 lead when Leonard drained a step-back three-pointer over a reaching Embiid with 1:01 left to play and three seconds left on the shot clock.

It put Toronto up 94-90 and the 76ers wouldn’t get the gap below four points from there.

“I just saw there were about three seconds left on the clock,”

Leonard said of the clutch basket. “(Embiid’s) so long so I just I just tried to fade away and shoot it over the top of him and luckily it went down.”

Battered and bruised Liverpool face balancing act against Barcelona

‘We’re not throwing flowers into the air, we did the job’ - Zidane

Liverpool emerged victorious from a bruising battle against Newcastle to remain in the hunt for the Premier League title, but may have sustained too many wounds to summon a Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday.

A late double from Lionel Messi in the Camp Nou on Wednesday has left Jurgen Klopp’s men with a mountain to climb to overturn a 3-0 first leg defeat if they are to reach a second consecutive Champions League final.

Liverpool have overcome such deficits before in the Champions League, most famously in the 2005 final against AC Milan.

But hopes of another famous European comeback at fortress Anfield were dealt a blow when Mohamed Salah was stretchered off with a head knock as Liverpool edged out Newcastle 3-2 on Saturday to move two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Salah watched a thrilling end to the match at St. James’ Park in the dressing room as his replacement Divock Origi headed home fellow substitute Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick four minutes from time.

Origi, who also scored a 96th-minute winner to beat Everton in the Merseyside derby in December, Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge have made important contributions in a supporting role to a club record points tally for Liverpool this season. “We are always ready to get on the pitch and make a difference,” said Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

“The lads who have been left at home and lads who are on the bench and haven’t come on, they are buzzing for us. “There’s no egos in this squad and that’s why we are where we are today and long may it continue.”

However, with Roberto Firmino already ruled out due to a groin injury, few would give Liverpool any hope of overhauling a three-goal deficit without two of their prolific front three should Salah not start.

Klopp therefore has a difficult balancing act deciding whether it is worth emptying the tank of his injury-hit squad once more on Tuesday or to save their legs for Wolves’ visit to Anfield on the final day of the Premier League season.

“We are now qualified for the league final, which is brilliant,” said Klopp at taking the title race to the final game of the season. Despite a sensational season, Liverpool’s chances of winning either trophy are fading.

To have any hope of a first league title in 29 years, Klopp’s men must hope that Manchester City’s relentless run of 12 straight league wins comes to an end either at home to Leicester in their game in hand on Monday, or at Brighton come Sunday.

Barcelona will also not be complacent heading to Anfield a year on from letting a 4-1 first leg lead against Roma slip away in the quarter-finals. Messi made it clear from before the season began that the Champions League was his and Barca’s primary target in his first campaign as club captain.

Moreover, while Liverpool toiled on Tyneside on Saturday night, Barca coach Ernesto Valverde had the luxury of making 11 changes for an inconsequential 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo having already wrapped up the Spanish title.

Yet, Origi’s winner at Newcastle personified Liverpool’s persistence and refusal to give up. Four times in their last seven league outings Liverpool have won the game in the final 10 minutes.

Now they must harness the same belief if Barca are to be given a fright at Anfield.

“If we do fall short this season we will be back next season and we just need to keep going and keep going, and hopefully get what this club deserves,” added Robertson.

“First of all Tuesday, a hell of a task, but if we can get a wee bit of luck then hopefully we will progress.” (afp)

Real Madrid delivered a winning response to Zinedine Zidane’s stinging criticism as Mariano Diaz scored twice in a 3-2 victory over Villarreal on Sunday.

An angry Zidane questioned the attitude of his players after last week’s 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano and reacted by making more changes, with Luka Modric and Gareth Bale not even included in the squad.

“I am the coach,” Zidane said. “I pick the squad and that’s it.” Instead, youngsters like Jesus Vallejo, Brahim Diaz and Federico Valverde were given chances to impress, along with Mariano, who has barely been used since joining from Lyon last summer.

His two goals, either side of Vallejo scoring his first for the club, were enough, despite Jaume Costa pulling a late goal back for Villarreal to set up an unexpectedly nervy finish.

“We played better than against Rayo,” Zidane said. “We needed that and the players needed it. We played well, no more, we’re not throwing flowers into the air.

We did the job and we won.”

The result leaves third-placed Madrid six points behind Atletico Madrid in La Liga with two games left. Villarreal stay five points above 18th-placed Real Valladolid, who play at home to Athletic Bilbao later on Sunday.

Madrid would need to win both of their remaining matches and Atletico lose both of theirs to prevent Diego Simeone’s side finishing as the top team in the capital for the second year running.

But more of a concern for Zidane will be the 15-point gap behind Barcelona, which would likely be even bigger had the already-crowned champions not rested players for the Champions League in recent weeks.

Zidane warned Madrid’s expectant fans on Saturday that much of his current squad will still be at the club next season but this felt like another exercise in experimentation, inside a Santiago Bernabeu that looked only a little over half full.

Mariano’s display begs the question whether he could have been more useful during a campaign where his team have struggled for goals.

In that regard, the sight of Vinicius Junior coming off the bench here and making his first appearance in two months after recovering from injury will also have been a welcome boost.

Mariano had scored inside two minutes, prodding in after Santi Cazorla had been robbed in midfield by the energetic Brahim.

The advantage lasted only nine minutes as this time Casemiro was caught napping in his own half, allowing Gerard Moreno the chance to fire past Thibaut Courtois at the near post.

Insigne’s 98th-minute penalty seals second spot for Napoli in Serie A

Lorenzo Insigne stepped up to slot in a 98th-minute penalty as Napoli came from behind to beat Cagliari 2-1 on Sunday to guarantee they finish second in the Italian league this season behind Juventus.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have a 10-point lead on third-placed Inter Milan with three games left. But they are a massive 16 points behind Juventus who had already won an eighth consecutive Serie A title with five games to spare.

“Keeping up with Juventus was honestly difficult,” said Ancelotti. “Of course we lost the strong motivation because the gap was great, but second place satisfies us and the team will certainly be reinforced for next season.”

After a drab first half in Naples the hosts fell behind after Leonardo Pavoletti fired the Sardinians ahead after 63 minutes.

But Dries Mertens headed Napoli back into the game with just five minutes to go and in a dramatic finale the hosts were awarded a late penalty after consultation with VAR when Artur Ionita handled a Faouzi Ghoulam cross, and was sent off.

Insigne stepped up with the clock ticking to score and ensure that Napoli will finish runnersup for the second consecutive year. Mertens now has 82 Napoli league goals -- one more than club legend Diego Maradona.

Juventus and Napoli are already assured of Champions League football next season but the battle for the final two berths remains tight with six teams in the running.

Atalanta’s push for a first-ever berth in Europe’s top competition was boosted after a 3-1 comeback win over Lazio as rivals Roma were held 1-1 at Genoa.

“We believed in a Champions League place before, but now we believe in it even more,” said Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The side from Bergamo are just one point behind Inter Milan who were held to a goalless draw at Udinese.

Atalanta, who meet Lazio again in the Coppa Italia final on May 15 in Rome, next play Genoa before travelling to Juventus with their

final league match against Sassuolo.

Roma missed the chance to close the gap after a 1-1 draw at Genoa and are now three points behind Atalanta in fifth. Torino are two points behind Roma in sixth after a 1-1 draw against Juventus on Friday.

But AC Milan, in seventh, can move to three points off the final Champions League place with a win at home against Bologna on Monday.

Battered and bruised Liverpool face balancing act against Barcelona

‘We’re not throwing flowers into the air, we did the job’ - Zidane

Liverpool emerged victorious from a bruising battle against Newcastle to remain in the hunt for the Premier League title, but may have sustained too many wounds to summon a Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday.

A late double from Lionel Messi in the Camp Nou on Wednesday has left Jurgen Klopp’s men with a mountain to climb to overturn a 3-0 first leg defeat if they are to reach a second consecutive Champions League final.

Liverpool have overcome such deficits before in the Champions League, most famously in the 2005 final against AC Milan.

But hopes of another famous European comeback at fortress Anfield were dealt a blow when Mohamed Salah was stretchered off with a head knock as Liverpool edged out Newcastle 3-2 on Saturday to move two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Salah watched a thrilling end to the match at St. James’ Park in the dressing room as his replacement Divock Origi headed home fellow substitute Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick four minutes from time.

Origi, who also scored a 96th-minute winner to beat Everton in the Merseyside derby in December, Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge have made important contributions in a supporting role to a club record points tally for Liverpool this season. “We are always ready to get on the pitch and make a difference,” said Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

“The lads who have been left at home and lads who are on the bench and haven’t come on, they are buzzing for us. “There’s no egos in this squad and that’s why we are where we are today and long may it continue.”

However, with Roberto Firmino already ruled out due to a groin injury, few would give Liverpool any hope of overhauling a three-goal deficit without two of their prolific front three should Salah not start.

Klopp therefore has a difficult balancing act deciding whether it is worth emptying the tank of his injury-hit squad once more on Tuesday or to save their legs for Wolves’ visit to Anfield on the final day of the Premier League season.

“We are now qualified for the league final, which is brilliant,” said Klopp at taking the title race to the final game of the season. Despite a sensational season, Liverpool’s chances of winning either trophy are fading.

To have any hope of a first league title in 29 years, Klopp’s men must hope that Manchester City’s relentless run of 12 straight league wins comes to an end either at home to Leicester in their game in hand on Monday, or at Brighton come Sunday.

Barcelona will also not be complacent heading to Anfield a year on from letting a 4-1 first leg lead against Roma slip away in the quarter-finals. Messi made it clear from before the season began that the Champions League was his and Barca’s primary target in his first campaign as club captain.

Moreover, while Liverpool toiled on Tyneside on Saturday night, Barca coach Ernesto Valverde had the luxury of making 11 changes for an inconsequential 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo having already wrapped up the Spanish title.

Yet, Origi’s winner at Newcastle personified Liverpool’s persistence and refusal to give up. Four times in their last seven league outings Liverpool have won the game in the final 10 minutes.

Now they must harness the same belief if Barca are to be given a fright at Anfield.

“If we do fall short this season we will be back next season and we just need to keep going and keep going, and hopefully get what this club deserves,” added Robertson.

“First of all Tuesday, a hell of a task, but if we can get a wee bit of luck then hopefully we will progress.” (afp)

Real Madrid delivered a winning response to Zinedine Zidane’s stinging criticism as Mariano Diaz scored twice in a 3-2 victory over Villarreal on Sunday.

An angry Zidane questioned the attitude of his players after last week’s 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano and reacted by making more changes, with Luka Modric and Gareth Bale not even included in the squad.

“I am the coach,” Zidane said. “I pick the squad and that’s it.” Instead, youngsters like Jesus Vallejo, Brahim Diaz and Federico Valverde were given chances to impress, along with Mariano, who has barely been used since joining from Lyon last summer.

His two goals, either side of Vallejo scoring his first for the club, were enough, despite Jaume Costa pulling a late goal back for Villarreal to set up an unexpectedly nervy finish.

“We played better than against Rayo,” Zidane said. “We needed that and the players needed it. We played well, no more, we’re not throwing flowers into the air.

We did the job and we won.”

The result leaves third-placed Madrid six points behind Atletico Madrid in La Liga with two games left. Villarreal stay five points above 18th-placed Real Valladolid, who play at home to Athletic Bilbao later on Sunday.

Madrid would need to win both of their remaining matches and Atletico lose both of theirs to prevent Diego Simeone’s side finishing as the top team in the capital for the second year running.

Insigne’s 98th-minute penalty seals second spot for Napoli in Serie A

Lorenzo Insigne stepped up to slot in a 98th-minute penalty as Napoli came from behind to beat Cagliari 2-1 on Sunday to guarantee they finish second in the Italian league this season behind Juventus.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have a 10-point lead on third-placed Inter Milan with three games left. But they are a massive 16 points behind Juventus who had already won an eighth consecutive Serie A title with five games to spare.

“Keeping up with Juventus was honestly difficult,” said Ancelotti. “Of course we lost the strong motivation because the gap was great, but second place satisfies us and the team will certainly be reinforced for next season.”

Marathon man Kipchoge to again target two-hour barrier

PARIS - Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge will again target the mythical two-hour marathon barrier in a special race to be held between late September and early October, likely in London.

Kipchoge went close to smashing the barrier when he came in 25 seconds off the mark in a staged race around Italy’s Monza race circuit in 2017.

“Running the fastest ever marathon time of 2:00:25 was the proudest moment of my career,” Kipchoge said.

“To get another chance to break the magical two-hour mark is incredibly exciting. I always say that no human is limited, and I know that it is possible for me to break this barrier.”

Kipchoge, 34, last week won his fourth London marathon, has now won 11 of the 12 marathons he’s contested and set a world record of 2:01:39 when winning the Berlin marathon in 2018.

“I learnt a lot from my previous attempt and I truly believe that I can go 26 seconds faster than I did in Monza two years ago,” he said.

The venue for the “INEOS 1:59 Challenge” is still to be decided, with a number of options that offer a flat-looped circuit being investigated for the event.

Murray, Leonard shine as Nuggets and Raptors level playoff series

LOS ANGELES - Jamal Murray scored 34 points, including six clutch free throws down the stretch to lift the Denver Nuggets to a gritty 116-112 NBA playoff win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Canadian Murray combined with Serbian Nikola Jokic to form a dynamic scoring duo as the Nuggets squared their second round Western Conference series at two games each.

It was a quick turnaround from the Trail Blazers’ 140-137 quadruple overtime victory in Friday’s game three.

Game four didn’t last nearly as long as that three hour, 35 minute marathon, but it was another back-and-forth battle highlighted

by Murray’s precision shooting and a fourth playoff triple-double from Jokic.

“The biggest part was mental,” said Murray on playing two playoff games just 40 hours apart. “We know what to do physically but that was a draining game and we had to come back with energy and face a great team.

“We were able to get what we wanted on offence and the stops on defense.”

Jokic had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his second

straight triple-double and Murray, who led all scorers, was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line for Denver, who handed Portland their first playoff loss at home this season. Two free throws by Murray increased the Nuggets’ edge to 112108 with 13 seconds on the clock.

After Damian Lillard scored on a layup with 7.7 seconds remaining, Murray hit a pair of free throws to make it 114-110 with 6.7 seconds to play.

CJ McCollum scored on a long two-point shot to cut it to 114-112 with 4.4 seconds to go, but Murray clinched it with another pair at the line with 3.4 seconds left.

“I love free throws,” said Murray, the son of Jamaican immigrants who moved to Kitchener, Ontario where he was born. “Everybody knows I love free throws. My team trusts me.”

Said Nuggets coach Mike Malone, “Jamal has got a tremendous amount of grit. You think about how young we are and going on the road to win a tough game four in a hostile environment. For Jamal to be a centrepiece of that is phenomenal.”

Elsewhere, Kawhi Leonard scored 39 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to propel the Toronto Raptors to a 101-96 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers that knotted their Eastern Conference series at two games apiece.

After losing back-to-back games, Leonard said the Raptors’ mindset was to “come in and play hard”.

After seven lead changes in the third quarter, the increasingly physical encounter was tied 75-75 heading into the fourth.

Thrust reverser ‘not working’ on Florida plane that crashed in river

MIAMI - A feature that helps aircraft slow down on landing was broken on a Boeing 737 that skidded into a river in Florida, a top transportation safety official said Sunday.

The plane carrying 143 people slid off the runway after a hard landing Saturday at a naval air station in Jacksonville during a lightning storm.

Police said 21 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries but no fatalities or critical injuries were reported.

Transport safety officials said one of the thrust reversers which are supposed to help to slow the aircraft down was not working.

“The aircraft had been in maintenance and the maintenance log noted that the left-hand thrust reverser was inoperative,” Bruce Landsberg, vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters Sunday.

He said investigators would be examining the maintenance of the aircraft in the weeks prior to the accident “and the condition of the thrust reversers will obviously be of interest.”

The pilot also requested a change of runway, landing on one air traffic

control advised had naval equipment on it, reducing the available runway length by 1,200 feet, Landsberg said.

“We don’t know what they were thinking or why they made that choice. That will be one of the things we look to find out, as we go through the cockpit voice recorder,” he said.

The flight data recorder had been recovered but the cockpit voice recorder remained underwater in the tail of the aircraft.

“When we recover it will give us much more information on what the crew was thinking,” he said.

Thunderstorms and lightning have been hampering efforts to retrieve the plane fuselage.

The navy had arranged for divers to recover several pets which are believed to have drowned in the cargo hold, he said.

Booms had also been set up to contain jet fuel spilling into the St Johns River.

Passengers on the flight from the

US base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to Jacksonville included military personnel and family members.

Passengers clambered across the wings of the partially submerged plane before being transported to shore in inflatable boats.

“We couldn’t tell where we were, a river or an ocean. There was rain coming down. There was lightning and thunder. We stood on that wing for a significant period of time,” Cheryl Bormann, a defense attorney who was on board the flight, told CNN. The plane involved was a Boeing 737-800, in operation for 18 years, according to the FlightRadar24 website.

US aerospace giant Boeing is under scrutiny following two crashes that killed a total of 346 passengers and crew and grounded its newer 737 MAX planes worldwide.

‘Nito’ Cortizo: cattle rancher and veteran of Panama politics

PANAMA CITY - Social democrat Laurentino Cortizo, who won Sunday’s presidential election in Panama, is a veteran politician and former agriculture minister of the small Central American country.

The 66-year-old businessman and cattle rancher, popularly known as “Nito,” will serve a single five-year term as head of state of a nation famed for its canal but also notorious for its financial sector which is accused of providing a haven for international tax evasion.

The terse and stern-looking Cortizo, who campaigned on an anticorruption ticket, has said he wants to “rescue and transform Panama” and leave a legacy untainted by graft.

He briefly served as agriculture minister in the government of president Martin Torrijos (2004-2009).

Corizo resigned after just 15 months in the government because he opposed concessions to relax health standards during negotiations for the US-Panama free trade agreement, which was signed in 2007.

Passionate about improving cattle breeds, he is known for his hand-on approach, helping with milking, vaccinating and tending to his herd.

Cortizo, who focused his campaign on the fight against inequality, is praised by supporters for his humility and social sensitivity.

Opponents however accuse him of being surrounded by lawmakers embroiled in corruption scandals.

To them, Cortizo insists that no one will be “untouchable” during his term in office.

Indonesia sinks 51 foreign boats to fight against poaching JAKARTA — Indonesian authorities resumed their tough stance against illegal fishing in the country’s waters by sinking 51 foreign ships Saturday, as the government ramps up efforts to exert greater control over its vast maritime territory.

The seized ships were sunk at five ports across the archipelago, which has some of the world’s richest fishing grounds, the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry said in a statement.

The seized vessels sunk included 38 Vietnameseflagged ships, 6 Malaysian, 2 Chinese and 1 Filipino.

The rest were foreign-owned ships using Indonesian flag.

Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said in a speech that the illegal boats were a threat to the local fishing industry. Their operators are frequently perpetrators of modern day slavery.

“This crime of illegal fishing in our waters was out of mind,” Pudjiastuti said. “We can’t tolerate anymore.”

Saturday’s events were carried out in a low-key fashion compared with previous occasions, when boats were blown to pieces and their destruction broadcast live.

A video taken off Datuk island in West Kalimantan province and released by the ministry showed Pudjiastuti and other fishery officers scrambling to an adjacent boat from a sinking vessel that had been filled with sand and flooded. She clapped her hands when she saw several ships successfully sunk.

The move came a week after an Indonesian navy patrol ship was rammed by two Vietnamese coast guard ships after intercepting a boat it says was fishing illegally in its waters. The Vietnamese claimed that the area was Vietnamese waters.

Indonesia detained 12 Vietnamese fishermen from the boat, which sank in last Saturday’s clash, and they are being held at a naval base on Natuna island.

Indonesian government says it has sunk more than 500 illegal fishing vessels since October 2014, many with explosives.

Last year, the ministry sunk 125 mostly foreign vessels, included 86 Vietnamese-flagged ships, 20 Malaysian and 14 from the Philippines.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, claims a huge exclusive economic zone, which is frequently penetrated by foreign fishing vessels. Its northerly reaches are regarded by China as its traditional fishing grounds despite their distance from the Chinese mainland. (ap)

EU warns Turkey against drilling off Cyprus EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini on Saturday urged Turkey to reconsider plans to start exploratory drilling for oil and gas off Cyprus, already condemned as illegal by the European Union.

“We express grave concern over Turkey’s announced intention to carry out drilling activities within the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus,” Mogherini said in a statement.

“In March 2018, the European Council strongly condemned Turkey’s continued illegal actions in the Eastern Mediterranean,” she added.

“In this context, we urgently call on Turkey to show restraint,” she added, warning that the EU would “respond appropriately to any illegal action that violated Cyprus’s rights”.

On Friday Turkey sent out a message on NAVTEX, the international maritime navigational telex system, announcing its vessels would be carrying out drilling operations in the Mediterranean until September.

According to reports in Cypriot media, the operation will encroach on Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone.

Turkey’s foreign ministry rejected Mogherini’s comments and said its drilling was based on “legitimate rights”.

In a statement, it accused the government of Cyprus of “irresponsibly jeopardising the security and stability of the Eastern Mediterranean region, by disregarding the inalienable rights of the Turkish Cypriots,” which it described as “co-owners” of the island’s natural resources.

Cyprus on Saturday “strongly condemned” Turkey’s move.

“This provocative action by Turkey constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus according to International and European Union Law,” a Cyprus Foreign Ministry statement said.

It added that it had “taken all necessary measures to address the situation”.

The government of the Republic of Cyprus only controls two-thirds of the Mediterranean island, the northern third of which is controlled by a Turkish-backed breakaway administration.

Turkey first announced it would be drilling for oil and gas off Cyprus back in February.

The discovery of gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean has prompted claims by the internationally recognised Greek Cypriot government and Ankara.

European Union member Cyprus has been pressing to develop offshore gas deposits and has signed deals with energy giants Eni, Total and ExxonMobil that have seen them carry out exploratory drilling.

Labour economy spokesman John McDonnell said Sunday that the party would try to “come to an agreement if we can” with the Conservatives. But he said Labour would only agree to a Brexit deal that included a permanent customs union with the EU to avoid barriers to trade. The government wants a looser relationship with the bloc that would let Britain strike new trade deals around the world.

McDonnell also said the Conservative Party’s leadership machinations have made negotiations difficult.

“We’re dealing with a very unstable government,” McDonnell told the BBC. “It’s (like) trying to enter into a contract with a company that’s going into administration and the people who are going to take over are not willing to fulfil that contract. We can’t negotiate like that.” (ap)

Myth Regarding Batu Medawu Temple in Nusa Penida

Peak of the temple festival or piodalan at Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida, took place on January 30. After holding the bhakti penganyar, the series of the temple festival was closed on Saturday (Feb. 2). There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated on Friday (Jan. 2) the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east.

In addition to the pilgrims coming

from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat.

In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

“Bathara Toh Langkir knows such desire, so that he made I Renggan unable to control the boat and fall asleep. The boat was

stranded in Manggis, Karangasem and crashed into an island there. Finally, the island split and becomes small islands as we see now around Padangbai,” said Jero Mangku.

The priest added that due to his failure, he tried to return to Nusa Penida through the eastern part of the island. When trying to tether the boat, apparently it was not completely under control. Even, it passed to the beach and split the rock mound in the eastern part of the island. In short, the ruin of I Renggan’s boat was made a place of worship currently known as the Batu Medawu Temple.

The story is further strengthened by a symbol in the form of building resembling a boat’s rear part depicting a boat splitting a rock mound.

This building can be seen in the Batu Medawu Temple, precisely in the Segara Temple. Batu Medawu Temple serves as a holy place to ask for wisdom, unlike the Dalem Ped functioned to invoke strength. (kmb)

Coconut potential of Lumbung Kauh village

The Pakistani popcorn seller who built his own plane

Due to marketing problem, demand for VCO products stagnant TABANAN - Lumbung Kauh village in West Selemadeg has a total area of 730.67 hectares. Of this area around 50 percent are coconut plantations in addition to other plantation crops such as durian, mangosteen, clove, coffee and banana. Because of this coconut potential, Lumbung Kauh village is included in the village area coalesced into the Nikosake (Indigo, Coffee, Snakefruit and Coconut). Unfortunately, coconut production to be processed into more valuable products for sale today is still limited due to marketing constraints. As a result, the demand for coconut products in the form of VCOs managed by BUMDEs at Lambung Kauh village is still stagnant.

Secretary of Lumbung Kauh village, Wayan Suarsa, stated on Sunday (May 5) that most of the residents of Lumbung Kauh village work as farmers. Coconut is currently being appraised by collectors at IDR 4,000 per piece. So, farmers are eager to pick up their coconut.

“It is different if price of coconut falls. Their coconut will be left as it is so that it is wasted,” he said.

Processing coconut into an end product is actually one solution if the price of coconut drops to the lowest price. Even though it has been processed into VCO, Suarsa admitted it cannot absorb much of the coconut production at Lumbung Kauh village. The VCO product of Lumbung Kauh village has been developed by the local BUMDes so that it can be sold through BUMDA. Unfortunately, it still has problem in the matter of poor quality and packaging so that mar-

keting cannot be extended to outlets making cooperation with BUMDA. “The demand for VCO produced by Lumbung Kauh village is currently uncertain because the processing is still manual and natural so the quality and packaging are still unable to compete against other VCO products,” explained Suarsa.

Suarsa hoped that the inclusion of Lumbung Kauh village in the Nikosake area will add the value to coconut farming as well as the existence of training assistance on processing coconut products other than VCO as well as the assistance of facilities and infrastructure.

“We have a goal to process VCO into cosmetic products but still lack knowledge and equipment.

Although there are village funds, the number is inadequate and still focuses on infrastructure. So, we hope from this Nikosake program,” said Suarsa.

According to him, from the Nikosake program, the main spot will be planned to be the center of agro-tourism activities at Lumbung Kauh village. Later, location of the main spot with the Coconut Village theme will take place near the Balian River and the pristine Pangkung Sakti waterfall background.

As planned, at the Coconut Village will be taken advantage for educational place of coconut gardens, how to process and enjoy coconut processing such as snacks, nata de coco, VCO along with derivatives such as masks, aroma therapy and lotions. For this reason, a hall will be provided at the main spot that will serve as an education and training center for processing coconut. (kmb24)

TABANAN - To optimize the museum management, this year the central government disburses a non-physical Special Allocation Fund (DAK) worth IDR 450 million. This fund from the Ministry of Education and Culture will be used to finance three components, where one of which is for the study and conservation of three collections namely Tika, Okokan and Janggi.

Chief of the Subak Museum Management, Ida Ayu Nyoman Ratna Pawitrani, said that the fund is given because the museum with public services is expected to be able to introduce and promote local culture and shape the nation’s character. The fund goes down to all government-operated museums in Indonesia and depends on the type of museum. Subak Museum in Tabanan district itself based on the standards of museum is categorized into regional museum of type C. “Other than museums, cultural parks are also given, but there are no cultural parks in Tabanan. These funds are for operational assistance in organizing the museums,” she explained on Sunday (May 5).

For the subak museum, continued Dayu Ratna, the funds will be used for financing three components namely management of collection, study of collection and conservation. There are three collections to

be tested, namely tika (Balinese traditional calendar made of wood), okokan and janggi (coconut shell whose lower part is given a small hole for timer and sanction gauges for subak members—Ed), and will continue with the holding of discussions. “This study is to find out what the philosophy is, its usage and other special things,” she explained.

Regarding the conservation, the collection will be given fumigation and injection of bamboo. Besides, it will include financing for public programs to be packaged in the activities of photo and painting exhibitions about subak, dissemination of subak museum, study together at museums and visiting museum program. The program goes to school is planned to target one high school in each sub-district. Additionally, the budget is also for financing the maintenance of facilities and infrastructure. “Here, there will only be minor improvements in the museum

because this fund is focused on nonphysical aspect,” she explained.

Dayu Ratna added the number of visits until April 2019 was still dominated by domestic tourists and most of the visitors came in group. “Every day, there are always foreign tourists on average of 5 to 10 people. In short, the visit is still dominated by domestic tourists,” she concluded.

As is known, the subak museum located at Sanggulan Tabanan has always been the main attraction for students. They want to know about the traditional irrigation system in Bali, especially in Tabanan district.

With a land area of 6.28 hectares, the land of the subak museum is an asset of the provincial government.

Guns outnumber guests at bombed Sri Lanka hotel

COLOMBO - At the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, one of six Sri Lankan targets hit by suicide bombers on Easter Sunday, the silence that reigns is not just the usual hush of a plush hotel.

Recently reopened, barely 10 of its 500 luxury rooms are occupied -- down from the 300 usual at this time of year -- as fears rise over the impact of the bombings on the island nation’s burgeoning tourism industry.

On April 21, the Cinnamon was one of three hotels hit by jihadi bombers along with three churches in attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that left 257 people dead. Around 9:10 am that day, Sri Lankan Inshaf Ibrahim, who had checked into the Cinnamon the day before, went to the breakfast buffet in the hotel’s Taprobane restaurant.

Then he set off the bomb in his backpack, killing twenty people.

The bomber’s brother Ilham Ibrahim died while attacking the Shangri-La hotel, also in Colombo.

Now, to get into the marblefloored lobby of the Cinnamon, visitors must pass through two security checks as a new X-ray machine scans bags. Armed soldiers outnumber guests.

The government expects visitor numbers to dive 30 percent this year and for Sri Lanka to need up to two years for the tourism sector to recover.

TABUR - The engine is from a roadcutter, the wings are burlap, the wheels are borrowed from a rickshaw: a popcorn seller has caught the attention of the Pakistan Air Force by building his own plane.

The tale of Muhammad Fayyaz has captured the hearts of many in a nation where millions, just like him, have limited access to education and are fighting for opportunities.

“I was literally in the air. I couldn’t feel anything else,” Fayyaz said of his first flight in a machine he learned to build mainly from viewing TV clips and online blueprints.

Pakistan has been thrilled before by stories of scientific prodigies plucked from obscurity before -notably, that of the engineer who said in 2012 that he had invented a car that could run on water -- a story that was later debunked by scientists.

But Fayyaz insists he flew and his claim is being taken seriously by the air force, whose representatives have now visited him multiple times, even issuing a certificate to commend his work, he revealed.

There has been a steady stream of visitors wanting to view his creation, which now sits in the empty courtyard of his three-room home in the village of Tabur in central Punjab province.

- Dreaming of a jet plane The 32-year-old said he had dreamed of joining the air force as a child, but his father died while he was in still in school, forcing him to drop out at the eighth grade and do odd jobs to feed his mother and

his five younger siblings.

As an adult, his passion for flying remained undiminished, so he took a wild gamble on a new dream and put everything he had into creating his own craft.

By day he worked as a popcorn seller, by night as a security guard, saving every rupee he could.

The first thing he had to acquire was information -- beginning with watching episodes of the National Geographic Channel’s Air Crash Investigation for insight into thrust, air pressure, torque, propulsion.

Cheap internet access in a nearby city helped fill the gaps, with Fayyaz claiming he spliced blueprints of planes he found online for his own creation.

He sold a piece of family land, and took out a 50,000 rupee ($350) loan from a micro-finance NGO, which he is still paying off.

He used his meagre funds creatively, buying burlap sacks wholesale and persuading a kind workshop employee who had seen him scouting for materials to build him a propeller.

There was trial and error. Some equipment needed to be replaced, designs had to be altered, the wiring had to be reworked.

His family worried he was obsessed.

“I kept telling him to stop. I kept telling him to concentrate on his family and work, he was being crazy over nothing. But he didn’t listen to a single word,” his mother, Mumtaz Bibi, recalled.

But Fayyaz kept going. And, at the end of it all produced a plane -- tiny, fragile, and painted a bright blue. (afp)

Drawing from 15,000 sources and an underlying 1,800-page report, the executive summary details how our species’ growing footprint and appetites have compromised the natural renewal of resources that sustain civilisation, starting with fresh water, breathable air, and productive soil.

An October report from the UN’s climate science panel painted a similarly dire picture for global warming, and likewise highlighted the need for social transformation “on an unprecedented scale” to cap the rise in temperature at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit).

The global thermometer has already gone up by 1C, and on current trends will rise another 3C by century’s end. Climate change and biodiversity loss, it turns out, feed off each other in a vicious cycle.

Deforestation and industrial agriculture are major drivers of species and ecosystem decline, but also account for at least a quarter of manmade greenhouse gas emissions.

Trees release planet-warming carbon dioxide when cut down, and the destruction each year of tropical forests covering an area the size of England shrinks the vegetal sponge that helps to absorb it.

Global warming, in turn, is pushing thousands of animals and plants out of their comfort zones, and intensifies the kind of heatwaves and droughts that recently fuelled unprecedented fires in Australia, Indonesia, Russia, Portugal, California and Greece.

for policy conflict too, the new report cautioned.

Plans to green the global economy reserve a crucial role for burning biofuels and locking away the CO2 released, a technology known as BECCS. But the huge tracts of land needed to grow energy crops on this scale -- roughly twice the size of India -- would clash with the expansion of protected areas and reforestation efforts, not to mention food production.

Global warming is third on the list, but is likely to move up.

“We can see the climate change signal getting stronger really, really quickly,” IPBES co-chair Sandra Diaz, a professor at the National University of Cordoba in Argentina, told AFP. Numbers four and five are pollution -- 400 million tonnes of heavy metals, toxic sludge and other waste are dumped into oceans and rivers each year -- and alien species, such as rats, mosquitoes, snakes and plants that hitch rides on ships or planes.

“There are also two big indirect drivers of biodiversity loss and climate change -- the number of people in the world and their growing ability to consume,” said Watson.

The heavily negotiated text does not set benchmarks for progress or “last chance” deadlines for action, as does the 2018 climate report.

Nor is the panel mandated to make explicit policy recommendations.

But it does point unmistakably to actions needed: reduce meat consumption, halt deforestation in tropical countries, discourage luxury consumption, slash perverse subsidies, embrace the concept of a low-growth economy.

The report will “serve as a basis for redefining our objectives” ahead of a key meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in China in October 2020, said co-author Yunne Jai Shin, a scientist at the Research Institute for Development in Marseilles. (afp)

PARIS - Humanity is rapidly destroying the natural world upon which our prosperity -and ultimately our survival -- depends, according to a landmark UN assessment of the state of Nature released Monday.

Changes wrought by decades of pillaging and poisoning forests, oceans, soil and air threaten society “at least as much as climate change,” said Robert Watson, who chaired the 132-nation meeting that validated a Summary for Policymakers forged by 450 experts.

One million animal and plant species face extinction, many within decades, they reported.

Alarmingly, the accelerating pace at which unique life-forms are disappearing -- already tens to hundreds of times faster than during the last ten million years -- could tip Earth into the first mass extinction since nonavian dinosaurs died out 66 million years ago.

In the short term, humans are not at risk, said Josef Settele, a professor at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Germany and co-chair of the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

“In the longer term, it is hard to say,” he told AFP. “If humans do go extinct, Nature will find its way, it always does.”

Halting and reversing these dire trends will require “transformative change” -- a sweeping overhaul of the way we produce and consume almost everything, especially food, the report concluded.

“We are eroding the very foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality-oflife worldwide,” said Watson.

“By transformative change, we mean a fundamental, system-wide reorganisation.”

The pushback from “vested interests,” he added, is likely to be fierce.

These award-winning photographs capture rarely seen wildlife and landscapes

THE winners of the California Academy of Sciences’ annual nature photography competition went to great lengths — and heights and depths — to create unique images of wildlife around the world.

These images “convey science to the general public in a way that is compelling and digestible,” says California-based wildlife photographer Suzi Eszterhas, who chaired the committee of judges that selected eight winners out of more than 6,500 submissions from 67 countries.

“Statistics and graphs are great — but there’s nothing like the power of a visual to help people understand the natural world,” she says.

Photographer and marine biologist Audun Rikardsen, who won the 2019 grand prize in the competition, says “science and photography are just a perfect combination for me.” Rikardsen, who studies whales and fish migration at the University of Tromsø in Norway, says he often brings camera equipment along on research trips. “Really it’s a win-win,” he says. “My scientific knowledge helps me better understand and photograph wildlife, and then my pictures really get people interested in my research.” Although Rikardsen is a prolific underwater photographer, his photo of a male black grouse won him the top prize this year.

He got the shot after more than three years of habitually visiting a particular perch along Norway’s northern coast, where he set up a motion-activated camera.

The grouse in his winning image quickly grew comfortable with the noise of the camera’s shut-

ter and flash, Rikardsen says, even appearing to bask in the attention.

Other winning finalists depict a Galapagos marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) grazing underwater, a rarely seen underwater view of a brown bear fishing for salmon, and more.

Though not all wildlife photographers daylight as biologists, many, including Eszterhas, work closely with scientists to track and photograph rare species and rarely seen animal behaviors, as well as the scientific process.

“I spent a lot of time following a sloth researcher all over South and Central America, for example, and photographed her attaching tracking devices to the sloths, because it’s important for people to see these scientific projects,” Eszterhas says.

Science educators depend on these images to teach ecology, says Rhonda Rubinstein, creative director at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

“Wildlife photographers are really unsung heroes, if you think of how far they push themselves — they’ll spend weeks, months or even years in extreme environments, just to capture a certain species,” she says.

Rubinstein, who helped launch the nature photography competition, called BigPicture, in 2014, says that she hopes the winning images will fuel conservation efforts. “People credit the first photo of Earth from space with helping really launch the modern environmental movement,” she says. “When you see the animals in this year’s photographs, you start to care about them, you want to find out their story and you want to protect them.” (net)

Made Yogi Arya Dwiputra, 31, a native of Pedungan, does not only move to collect plastic waste, but also takes action to deal with plastic waste. Yogi began to empower the community to collect garbage in the waste bank. This effort began in 2018.

He invited the public to save garbage at the waste bank which he named Bina Lulu Sejahtera.

Initially, the man who also works as a lawyer along with his friends campaigned to reduce the use of plastic waste by taking plastic garbage.

This action continued to invite many sympathizers, especially young people, to join in. Various communities and organizations care about the environment also participate in his institution. Moreover, the massive movement caring about plastic waste that he does used to be viral.

But lately, he began to think of making a concrete manifestation by reducing the use of plastic waste by empowering people to collect plastic waste in his waste bank. It is a movement having been echoed for a long time. However, in this waste bank, he inserted health benefits in saving waste, considering that health insurance is needed in the present era.

Previously, he had a cooperative

named Bina Sejahtera Cooperative, established seven years ago. But his concern for the environment made him determined to take real action by making a waste bank. Principle of the waste bank is almost the same as the cooperative he owns.

But what is exchanged in a waste bank is plastic waste. So, people are interested in collecting and sorting plastic waste and then can be exchanged in the form of money savings and health insurance.

He collaborated with the Medika Pedungan Clinic. The waste bank customers joining in the health insurance program will have a healthy savings and family card that can be used for treatment at the clinic. In addition, customers can also borrow loans with a maximum limit of IDR 3,000,000, but must have savings of 10 percent of the desired loan amount. The bank’s concept is really implemented in the Bina Lulu Sejahtera Waste Bank.

Plastic waste is divided into two types, namely blue bottles worth IDR 2,500 per kg and clear bottles worth IDR 3,000 per kg.

Furthermore, the movement of collecting and sorting plastic waste is also transmitted to schools. The response of school children is quite positive.

Location of the waste bank is in the South Denpasar area, which is in fact there are many collectors of used goods including plastic waste. On that account, at least he can contribute to reducing plastic waste in South Denpasar. (kmb42)

of extracurricular activities such as arts, sports, reading books and newspapers (literacy) and other activities utilizing existing areas.

Productive plants growing around the school area such as coconut are also used for the management of large areas. Yield of the coconut plants, such as fruit and leaves, is used for the maintenance of a wide enough football field. Other useful plants such as medicinal plants and fruits can also be found around the school area. Arrangement of this beautiful land received a positive response from the local government.

The school located at the end of the district border this year is appointed to represent the district, becoming a child-friendly school.

According to him, this title is not necessarily easily obtained because a large enough area requires routine maintenance and discipline. Badung Tourism claims it affects tourist visits

Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, confirmed the rules that apply to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. This policy is to provide a deterrent effect to foreigners staying beyond

the time limit. However, this policy having been implemented since May 2019 is a challenge to Badung district to develop tourism.

“This rule can affect tourist visits because there are many individual

Meanwhile, foreigners coming in groups, according to this bureaucrat from Kuta, make a visit by using a travel agency and their permission or limit of overstay will be reminded by the travel company.

“Then, they would be better going to Singapore than to Indonesia because the individuals are not necessarily all wealthy. Just imagine if

the individual is absorbed in spending holiday, and 1 week late, he will be fined at IDR 7 million,” he said.

Moreover, said Made Badra, the cost to Singapore is not too expensive.

The amount of IDR 7 million will be able to extend his permit for 30 days.

“We think that the fine of one million per day is very expensive,” he said.

He explained with today’s technology, most tourists have already known the market and the purpose of their vacation, so that many tour-

Popular Australian DJ dies in accident on Bali holiday SYDNEY - Popular Australian DJ Adam Neat has died on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali after reportedly crashing through a glass door while trying to help an injured friend.

“It is with great regret that we can confirm Adam Neat was involved in a fatal accident while trying to help a friend who had suffered multiple fractures in Bali on Saturday,” according to a post on his official Facebook page, which has more than 900,000 followers.

Neat, who performed as Adam Sky, was based in Singapore and was regularly ranked in the top three Asiabased DJs, according to his website.

National broadcaster ABC said Neat, 42, was believed to have severed an artery in his arm when he crashed through a glass door as he rushed to help a female friend who fell from a balcony at the resort where they were staying. (afp)

That exalted number, which includes the film’s estimated take of $145.8 million this three-day weekend in North America, pushes the superhero blockbuster past “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which netted $2.07 billion, and even “Titanic” ($2.18 billion).

Only “Avatar” ($2.79 billion) has done better. Yet “Avengers” hit its record total in just 11 days, taking in a stunning $575.8 million in China alone.

The plot? A bunch of misfit dolls with pointy ears and bad teeth -residents of Uglyville -- face a harsh world but finally discover their inner beauty. The voices of Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Wanda Sykes and Janelle Monae are featured.

Dramatic footage that went viral on social media showed Aeroflot’s Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft crashlanding and then speeding along the runway at Sheremetyevo international airport on Sunday, flames pouring from its fuselage.

Passengers could be seen leaping onto an inflatable slide at the front and running from the blazing plane as huge black columns of smoke billowed into the sky.

Investigators said 41 people had died. “There were 78 people including crew members on board the plane,” which was bound for the northwestern city of Murmansk, Russia’s Investigative Committee

said in a statement.

“According to the updated info which the investigation has as of now, 37 people survived.” Eleven people were injured, Dmitry Matveyev, the Moscow region’s health minister said earlier in the day.

- ‘Horror before our eyes’ Witness Alyona Osokina said she was inside the terminal when she suddenly saw a plane on fire rushing along the runway. “The blaze was devouring the plane,” she told Rain TV. Osokina said that fire engines had arrived quickly but could not immediately put out the blaze.

“This horror and tragedy happened before our eyes,” she said, adding that those who managed to flee the plane then walked towards the airport. “I believe they were in a state of deep shock.”

The jet -- carrying 73 passengers and five crew members -- left Sheremetyevo at 6:02 pm (1502 GMT), and the crew issued a distress signal shortly afterwards, officials said. “After the take-off, the crew reported an anomaly and decided to come back to the departure airport. At 6:30 pm, the aircraft made an emergency landing,” the airport said in a statement.

Aeroflot, Russia’s flagship carrier, said the plane had to return to the airport “due to a technical reason” and its engines caught fire upon landing. Previous reports had

said the fire broke out in mid-air.

The jet reportedly managed to land on its second attempt, hitting the ground with its landing gear first and then its nose.

Flight tracking site Flightradar24 showed the jet looping once in the air before landing. The plane’s fuel tanks were full and a much bigger death toll could have been a real possibility, aviation experts said. Investigators said they were looking into various lines of inquiry and it was premature to draw any conclusions about the cause of the accident.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences to the victims’ loved ones and said the investigation “should be as thorough as possible”, according to the Kremlin. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered a special com-

mittee to investigate the disaster.

The Murmansk region -- where many of the casualties are believed to be from -- will go into a threeday period of mourning beginning Monday. Some flights have been diverted to other Moscow airports or Nizhny Novgorod, some 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of the Russian capital. Numerous Aeroflot flights are expected to be affected in the coming days.
