‘Logan’ Roars With Massive $85.3 Million Debut

LOS ANGELES - “Logan” tore into the weekend box office, opening to a massive $85.3 million and proving that moviegoers will show up in force for R-rated comic book movies. The superhero spinoff marks Hugh Jackman’s last turn as Wolverine after 17 years of donning the adamantium claws.

As the movie business grows more saturated with stories about costumed vigilantes, studios are trying to find ways to differentiate their own comic book adaptations.

Like “Deadpool” before it, “Logan” demonstrates that adults will turn out for tentpole fare that is bloodier and more profane than your average X-Men movie.

“Logan” was produced by 20th Century Fox and cost $97 million to make. Set in the near future, it follows Wolverine and an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart), who leaving their hiding place on the Mexican border to help a young mutant (Dafne Keen). James Mangold, who previously collaborated with Jackman on 2013’s “The Wolverine,” directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay. Critics embraced the film, hailing it as a

comic book movie with bite, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman writing that “Logan” “...brings the saga to a satisfying finish.”

Despite “Logan’s” dominance, Blumhouse and Universal’s “Get Out” kept going strong. The lowbudget thriller racked up $26.1 million, bringing its domestic haul to $75.9 million. That’s an impressive return for a film that cost less than $5 million to make.

Lionsgate’s “The Shack” took third place, earning a solid $16.1 million in its first weekend in theaters. The faith-based drama stars Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer and cost $26 million to produce. “The Shack” centers on a man (Sam Worthington) whose religious beliefs are tested following a family tragedy.

Warner Bros.’ “The Lego Batman Movie” and Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 2” rounded out the top five, earning $11.6 million and $4.7 million, respectively. That pushes the Lego spinoff’s box office total to $148.6 million and gives the John Wick followup a domestic gross of $83 million. (rtr)

Watson, the “Harry Potter” movie series co-star and pioneer of the HeForShe campaign to make men advocate for feminism, talked about the photo shoot for the magazine while promoting her latest film, the Disney live action “Beauty and the Beast.”

“It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is about what feminism is,” she said in an interview with Reuters.

“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.

“I’m confused. Most people are confused. No, I’m just always just quietly stunned,” she said.

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump’s public attack on a former president is extremely unusual. While election campaigns are laced with vitriol once the victor enters office there’s at least a public respect for the former White House occupant.

But in an unprecedented attack, President Trump has called the former president Barack Obama “sick”, saying he should be prosecuted for illegally wiretapping him. Donald Trump and Barack Obama have history.

Mr Trump began his attack in 2011 when he started to publicly question whether Mr Obama was born in the United States. That same year, after releasing his birth certificate, Mr Obama mocked the reality TV star at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

The room erupted around an expressionless Mr Trump as Mr Obama cracked jokes about his birther claims, painting him as a ridiculous conspiracy theorist. His humiliation was public and stinging

but Mr Trump didn’t change his course - he continued questioning Mr Obama’s birth and legitimacy for several years. During the 2016 campaign both men took regular swipes at each other.

Mr Obama mocked Mr Trump again - this time over his use of Twitter, saying: “If somebody starts tweeting at three in the morning because SNL made fun of you, then you can’t handle the nuclear codes”.

Candidate Trump went a few steps further, suggesting Mr Obama had some sort of sympathy or even connection with Islamic terrorists.

“There’s something going on,” he said in June last year.

He then claimed that Mr Obama founded IS. But the sour tone sweetened with victory. After

winning the 2016 election the two met in the Oval Office for the very first time.

Mr Trump called his predecessor a “good man” with whom he had “great chemistry”. A month ago, in an interview with Fox News, Mr Trump said of Mr Obama: “We get along, I don’t know if he’ll admit this, but he likes me. I like him.”

Then something changed.

Cyber crime disrupts Bali’s security CURRENTLY there are phenomena of cyber crime. It happens because many people have not understood so that their comments on social media are uncontrolled. From the data compiled at the Bali police, in 2013 there were 19 cases of cyber crime and then increased to 54 cases in 2014 and 75 cases in 2015.

It shows an increase every year because currently people have no longer limits in the cyber or social media. Sometimes they are not aware to have violated the rules or laws on electronic information and transaction that could have an impact on unrest. Currently, the cyber crime, especially in Bali, has slightly interfered with the safety of this island. Moreover, there are irresponsible parties that misuse the social media to disrupt the security of Bali. For example, there are negative comments in social media related to the celebration of Nyepi and such a case repeats every year.

“Crime increasingly develops, especially in terms of the method used, although it does not happen globally. Every year, there are many reports about cyber crimes and so are the cases of ATM breaking in by strangers. It means that we have to be prepared to face the crimes in virtual world that will be further growing,” said Director of Special Criminal Investigation Unit at the Bali Police, Kenedy, when speaking at Halo Kamtibmas live broadcast on BaliTV from the lobby of the Bali Police Headquarters some time ago.

In the meantime, the penalties are quite severe according to the Law No.19/2016 on Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE). There are nine articles on prohibited acts that can be threatened with punishment varying from 5 to 12 years. According to Kenedy, in 2016 his institution handled 75 cases, where 10 percent of them were processed and the remaining cases were settled amicably because the reported and the reporting have forgiven each other. The perpetrator or the reported is obliged to make a written statement that it would not repeat such an action again.

“Function of police authority has already been running in the matter of coaching and dissemination. Now, it depends on Balinese people whether they want to change into a good, safe, calm and peaceful community or otherwise. Take advantage of social media properly,” he hoped.

He appealed to Balinese people in particular in order to wisely utilize the social media. Sometimes when sharing information it will quickly spread everywhere. Recipients of the information in the social media should not immediately absorb the information but must check out the truth first. Do not be shared immediately because if it has something to do crimes it means we get involved in a problem. Society must be smarter in filtering the information and sharing the news via social media.

“For the matter of cyber crime, I emphasize the public to be careful to speak, make status, comment or even share something on social media. For example, there was a case last year where someone complained on Facebook about the activities of Nyepi in Bali. The act leads to sensitive case to ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup (SARA) so that it ended in legal process,” said a legal practitioner, Haposan Sihombing.

As a legal practitioner, Haposan appealed to the public if there are problems encountered, it would be better not to be shared in social media because the consequences can be worse and even leads to legal process. In addition, it could result in anarchical deeds if the information shared has something to do with SARA. “Therefore, people must take advantage of social media wisely. It includes the supervision against our children. Social media are better to be utilized to foster a sense of unity, patriotism, social activities and strengthen diversity and other positive activities,” he added. (rah)

Bali must remain national tourism icon

Tourism competition should be examined from all sides and in addition to making improvement to destinations and infrastructure, effective promotion is also necessary. Chief of the Bali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, recently responded to recent strategies for national tourism development by saying that in the case of Indonesia, Bali should remian the primary icon of of tourism in Indonesia. This, he said, is more efficient than spending large amounts of money on promoting new destinations.

Wiraputra added that tourism generated income is one of the fastest ways to overcome the present sluggishness of the economy. Toursim promotion therefor needs to result in attracing foreign tourits.

“The arrival of the King of Saudi Arabia can be seen as evidence that Bali remains a top choice for various circles of potential visitors. It is also noting that Bali as the country’s Indoneisa”, he said.

Given Bali ability to attract foreign visitors, the Ministry of Tourism should be using Bali as their promotional icon. “The Wonderful Indonesia tourism campaign that is currently being aggressivley shared overseas, should be positioning Bali should be featured as an important attraction that can serve to then interest tourists in visiting other parts of Indonesia”, he advised, voicing the vision of Kading Bali.

The natural beauty of the island hospitality of its people, customs, culture and the arts inspired by universal Hinduism make Bali a friendly and comfortable place for anyoen wanting to visit. The island of Bali has also been a source of inspiration for tourism the world over.

“Bali is still a major tourist destination in the world so promoting Indonesia tourism should include Bali as its main icon. Kadin Bali members are hopefull that the

national tourism promotion model shifts to give Bali a more strategic position in the development of national tourism” said Wiraputra.

The visit from the King Salman to Bali will make Bali even more popular as a destinatio for visitors from the Middle East. There is also hope that this visit will strenthen economic relations with businesses from Saudi Arabia particularly in the field of managemen and investment in tourist accomodations and tourism infrastructure.

Chairman of the Bali Tourism Society Alliance. Dr. I Gusti Kade Sutawa, said that national the tourism management needs to be improved. We cannot simply expect 20 million visiotrs to come to Indonesia without mapping out the contribution and benefits for national tourism.

“I’m sure that tourism promotion is constantly needed. Strategies for promotion should be improved by involving all relevant parties. The management of tourism cannot simply rely on potential markets without taking into account what we have to offer”, he said.

Sutawa also said that Indonesia shoud make a grand design for national tourism so that the development of tourism will mreo evenly distributed and done in a more professional manner. The government, he stressed should pay more

attention to Bali tourism given that it is already positioned as an iconic tourist destinaiton in Indonesia.

“Travelers know more about Bali tourism than Indonesian tourism. By making Bali the main focus of tourism promotion, naturally it will be easier to sell tourism in other parts of Indonesia and be the more effective than promoting products and places that are new to the international market. The national economy can be stregthened through Bali. If tourism in Bali is rolling and stable, I am confident that tourism in other parts of Indonesia will become more well known”, he said.

The next governor of Bali also needs to understand the importance that tourism promotio plays for Bali added Sutawa sayign that we must not think that just because Bali is already popular that promotion is not needed. Given how quickly tourism is developing in other parts of the world promotion remains important for Bali. Without appropriate promotional strategies such as approaching new markets, Bali tourism could become abandoned.

“I also hope that the effectiveness of national tourism promotion is evaluated to see how many people are visiting Indoneisa because of recent promotion and how many are visiting because of Bali’s long standing reknown”, said Sutawa. (dir)

US and Canadian scientists to study cross-border flooding

Mars astronaut radiation shield set for moon mission trial-developer

MONTPELIER — U.S. and Canadian scientists are planning to spend the next five years studying flooding on Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River, which drains the lake north into Quebec, and whether methods can be developed to control future flooding.

Besides studying the causes of past floods, particularly the historic floods in 2011, the scientists will look for ways to better forecast flooding and measures to reduce the effects of future floods, considered likely with weather extremes in an era of climate change.

The scientists conducting the $11.3 million study will look at issues such as what effect the Chambly Canal, which takes vessels around a series of rapids near the Quebec city of SaintJean-sur-Richelieu, could have on flooding, said Jean-Francois Cantin, chief of east hydrological operations for Canada’s National Hydrological Service.

They could also focus on how V-shaped, man-made stone eeltraps, visible in aerial photos of the river shoals, could affect the flow of the river, said Cantin, who is also the Canadian co-chair of the International Lake Champlain Richelieu Study Board.

“The shoals there are really the natural control of the whole

system upstream of Saint-Jeansur-Richelieu, the lake (and) the water levels,” he said.

The board is conducting the study for the International Joint Commission, an organization formed in 1909 to manage boundary water issues between Canada and the United States.

The study began in 2013 in response to historic spring flooding along Lake Champlain in Vermont and New York in 2011 that kept the lake and areas along the river above flood stage for more than two months. The flooding in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, population about 93,000, affected about 3,000 homes in low-lying areas and lasted until mid-June.

The research marks the third time the International Joint Commission has looked at flooding in Lake Champlain and the Richelieu. In 1937, the commission approved construction of a flood control dam near SaintJean-sur-Richelieu that was never finished. In 1981, after a six-year study, the commission concluded that flood forecasting and flood plain regulation were desirable and that a flood control system could be built, but no action was taken.

Cantin said the public will be kept aware of developments as the study progresses. (ap)

HAIFA - A vest designed to shield astronauts from deadly solar particles in deep space is set for trials on a lunar mission ready for deployment on any manned mission to Mars, its Israeli developers said.

The AstroRad Radiation Shield has been devised by Tel Avivbased StemRad, which has already produced and marketed a belt to protect rescue workers from harmful gamma ray radiation emitted in nuclear disasters, such as Chernobyl and Fukushima.

The vest will protect vital human tissue, particularly stem cells, which could be devastated by solar radiation in deep space or on Mars, whose sparse atmosphere offers no protection, StemRad’s CEO Oren Milstein said.

U.S. space agency NASA has said it hopes to send astronauts to Mars in the mid-2030s.

The vest is made of layers that look like a contoured map and will be tailor-made for each astronaut. Non-metallic protective materials will be positioned on each shield to cover the organs of each astronaut.

“This product will enable human deep space exploration.

Our breakthrough has come in creating the architecture of the multi-layered shield to accurately

cover the most important organs,” Milstein said.

StemRad say it has proven the concept in the laboratory and in simulations, but testing will also take place on the Orion spacecraft, a joint project of Lockheed Martin, NASA and the European Space Agency.

Orion is set to orbit the moon unmanned during the debut flight of NASA’s heavy-lift Space Launch System rocket, scheduled for late 2018 but it is also assessing the feasibility of flying two astronauts on that mission.

During the lunar flyby mission, the vest will be strapped to a “phantom” torso dummy, a device used to monitor radiation absorption.

Another phantom will fly unprotected and the two will be analysed after they return to Earth.

NASA had no immediate comment on how the test could be affected if the agency decided to put astronauts on Orion.

Stemrad’s chief technologist, Gideon Waterman, said the vest needed to combine density with

flexibility to protect astronauts while enabling them to move about as freely as possible.

Mock-ups have been made, and the first protective vest is expected to be produced by the end of the year, Milstein said.

“Based on our simulations, we’re sure it works but to be 100 percent sure, we’re sending it up on EM-1,” he said, referring to NASA’s Exploration Mission-1, the first flight of the combined Space Launch System rocket and the Orion capsule.

The Orion will have its own small shelter for solar storms or flares that have dangerous bursts of radiation, and the vest, Milstein said, will offer the same degree of protection so astronauts can keep safe in other parts of the spacecraft.

Astronauts in Earth’s orbit, such as those on the International Space Station, do not face the same risk because they are protected by the planet’s magnetic field which acts as a shield, he added. (rtr)

In order to enhance the safety of visitors, Chief of the Nusa Penida police, Ketut Suastika, has asked those who manage marine tourism facilities and activities to place greater importance on their responsibility to ensre the safety of tourists.

“After all, the safety of tourists is the responsibility of those who offer tourism services. Therefore any tourism services that involve marine activities are required to provide adequate safety equipement so as to prevent casualties”, he said. (dwa)

Govt must manage garbage at Suwung landfill

DENPASAR - After the termination of the business agreement with PT Navigat Organic Energy Indonesia (NOEI) who the Sanitation Management Agency of Sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan) appointed to manage the waste at the Suwung landfill no other invesors have stepped up to take over this role.

There is fear that the lack of waste management at Suwung could adversely affect the surrouding environment. The local govern-

ment therefor has an obligation to carry out waste management until a private company can take over.

On Sunday (Mar. 5) a number of legislators for the Denpasar House of Representatives, including Chairman of the PDI-P Faction, Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa, Chairman of the Democratic Faction, A.A. Susruta Ngurah Putra, brought up this issue.

Kadek Agus stressed that waste management at the Suwung landfill should be a priority for the govern-

ment as the amount of garbage pilling up at the landfill everyday , already exceeds capacity. If things are left as they are garbage will start to spill over into the nearby mangrove. “This would be devasting to the environment” he said.

Ngurah Putra added that if there are no investors or third parties are willing to manage the garbage at the landfill, the government should be forced to intervene. He added that the situation is quite urgetn given

that more garbage piles up everyday.

“Please check and see how many garbage trucks are dumping garbage here everyday. If this garbage is not processed then where will we bury it”, asked this Democratic politician. Based on recent data from the landfill management unit, the Suwung landfill recieves about 1.000 tons of garbage per day, 60 percent of which comes form Denpasar and the other 40 percent form the

rest of Badung. Because noone is processeing the garbage, it is simply being pilling up.

Previously, PT NOEI was accorded 20 years to manage the garbage at the Suwung landfill into as much as 9 MW of electricity. Unfortunately PT NOEI was not successful in holding up their end of the contract and so the contract that was signed on Arpil 2, 2004 was terminated by the government. (kmb12)

On the verge of dissapearing, Leko to be performed at BAF

TABANAN - The Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2017 will be held next June in Denpasar. A number of districts have already started preparing artists who will give their best this annual event. The district of Tabanan for example plans to feature a performance of Leko from Tunjuk village that is rarely staged and on the verge of dissapearing as an art form.

Head of the Tabanan Culture Agency, Gusti Supanji, said that between 1919 to 1933 this art form was doing well and was even grought to other villages as entertainment for ceremonial Manusa yadnya.

Unfortunately, Tunjuk’s Leko art has experienced it sups and downs in response to changing times.

Around 1957 dancers and gamelan players from Tujuk Kelod starting really dedicateing themselves to Leko allowing it to survive to this day.

“We want to bring this art formo back to our community so that it does not fade into history”, said Supanji”, accompanied by the art division head and the artists.

The Leko dance is classified as a dance meant for the entertainement of the community although it is often staged as an accompaniment to religious ceremonies, three-month baby ritual, tooth-filing ritual and so forth.

Although this dance itself functioned as entertainment, the performace of the Leko dance respects religious values so that Leko perfromances are always preceded with a ritual in honor of

the location of the performance, the gamelan instruments to be played and the costume and accessories to be worn by the dancers, including some of the headresses that are made sacred.

Leko dance is categorised as a folk dance of the Legong variety and is accompained bamboo instruments. The Leko dance has elements of pelegongan in terms of dance movements, costume, storyline and musical instruments, that in many Legong dances was later replaced with the iron gamelan.

Supanji explained that art troupes who perform at the annual art extravagancy known as the Bali Arts Festival are chosen by subdistrict and are selected by turn every year. The culture agency does this to make sure that all sub districts have a change to perform at some point.

All the artist who will perfomr in the BAF 2018 were selected based on a competition that was held in 2017. “We have sent letters to the subdistrict related to the plan to hold competitons for next years festival”, he said.

Tabanan however is still experiencing financial obstacle to creating an excellent performance.

Surely, considerable funding fis requred for coaching and training the art troupes and other supporting matters.

Actually Tabanan has an extraordinary potential in the art field. Nevertheless, this obstacle does not deter the intention of the artists of Tabanan to deliver their performances. (kmb28)

Earlier, King Salman who arrived in Bali on Saturday (Mar. 4) will be on vacation until Thursday (Mar. 9). Regarding the extension of King Salman’s holiday was disclosed by PT Jasa Angkasa Semesta (JAS), service provider of the aircraft ground handling of the Saudi Arabia’s delegates in Bali.

According to Deputy Director of Operations of PT. JAS, Subiyono, the Saudi Arabian Airlines entrusted its ground handling to his company. He said that on Saturday (Mar. 12), his company will handle one flight of the King Salman’s entourage.

He explained that King Salman’s entourage will start to leave Bali on Wednesday (Mar. 8). JAS will handle one flight of the en-

tourage on that day. Meanwhile, on Friday (Mar. 11), JAS will also handle three other flights of the entourage.

In the meantime, the preparation of the King Salman’s holiday in Bali has been commenced since February 16. A total of 11 flights are handled by JAS especially for the holidays of King Salman in Bali.

In details, on February 1622 there were totally five flights handled. Then, on Friday (Mar. 3), there was one flight including the entourage that landed at the Ngurah Rai International Airport.

“While on Saturday (Mar. 4), there are five airlines, including that of King Salman using B747-400 aircraft with registration number

HZHM1,” he said.

Other than addressing the arrival of King Salman, the luggage and other needs of the entourage during a holiday in Bali were transported directly from Saudi Arabia.

A total of 145 tons of cargo were handled by JAS for this entourage.

Moreover, the vehicle of King Salman namely Mercedes S600 and escalators are also brought in from Saudi Arabia.

He said there were a total of 200 additional staff were brought to Bali specifically to handle the arrival of King Salman. He added that JAS also brought in the main deck loader (MDL) from Cengkareng to Bali to drop off the Mercedes vehicle and the escalator.

“By chance, in Bali JAS does not have any MDL because Bali is not an airport that specifically handles cargo. The MDL weighs 32 tons,” he said. (kmb18)

The findings of the 70-day probe directly accuse the impeached Park of wrongdoing on several charges, including the bribery conspiracy implicating Samsung.

Lee goes on trial for bribery and embezzlement on Thursday amid a corruption scandal that has rocked South Korea and led to the impeachment.

Park, 65, has had her powers suspended since her impeachment by parliament in December. Should the Constitutional Court uphold the impeachment, she would become the country’s first democratically elected president to be thrown out of office, triggering an election in Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

A decision is expected as early as this week.

South Korean law does not allow a sitting president to be indicted unless she is accused of treason. No formal charges can be brought against her until she is either removed from office or her term ends as scheduled in late February 2018.

Her removal from office would subject her to a fresh investigation by state prosecutors.

“Bribery charges related to the president, and the culture blacklist case ... have been transferred to the prosecutors’ office,” special prosecutor Park Young-soo told a televised news conference.

The special prosecutor also said the president was instrumental in blacklisting more than 9,000 artists, authors and movie industry professionals and excluding them from government assistance that constituted an abuse of power.

In a statement detailing the findings of its investigation, the special prosecutor’s office said the National Pension Service voted in favour of a merger of two Samsung Group affiliates in 2015, despite anticipating a 138.8 billion won ($119.87 million) loss.

Opening a new chapter at India’s “grandmothers’ school”

FANGANE - Aajibaichi Shaala is not your ordinary school in India.

The students at “grandmothers’ school” in the village of Fangane are elderly women who are getting the chance to learn to read.

“I love going to school,” Kamal Keshavtupange, 60, told Reuters as she washed clothes outside her home in the village, 120 km (75 miles) east of the financial capital, Mumbai.

India’s literacy rate grew to 74 percent in the decade to 2011, according to the latest census, but female literacy continued to lag the rate for males by a wide margin.

Clad in pink saris, their school uniform, the women walk every afternoon along dusty village paths to their lessons.

“First I finish all my house work, then I go to school. It’s good we

have this in our village,” said 70year-old Drupada Pandurangkedar.

Her eight-year-old granddaughter studies in the government primary school in Fangane.

The women begin class with a prayer and then dive into their lessons, writing on slates to practice.

The school uses teaching aids such as the alphabet painted on tiles which can be read by students with poor eyesight. Many of the aids are made by the students.

Sheetal Prakash More, their 30year-old teacher, said she would like to see women in other villages get the same access to education.

“Every other teacher teaches children. Only I have the opportunity to teach elderly women,” More said.

GM sells European brands to France’s Peugeot

PARIS — General Motors is selling its unprofitable European car business to the French maker of Peugeot, marking the American company’s retreat from a major market and raising concerns of job cuts in the region.

With the 2.2 billion euro ($2.33 billion) deal announced Monday, GM is giving up brands — Opel in Germany and Vauxhall in Britain — that have given it a foothold in the world’s third-largest auto market since the 1920s. They have not, however, made a combined profit in 18 years despite multiple turnaround efforts.

For the once-struggling PSA Group, which makes Peugeot and Citroen cars and has just recently reshaped its own business, the acquisition will turn it into Europe’s No. 2 automaker after Volkswagen.

Carlos Tavares, the CEO of PSA, said the deal was “a game-changer for PSA.” GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra said it was a “win” for both sides. “This was a difficult decision for General Motors but we are united in belief that it is the right one,” she told reporters in Paris.

Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, which caused a plunge in the pound, weighed on the decision. “Without Brexit, we would have reached the breakeven goal” at last in 2016 for the European business, Barra said.

PSA will join with French bank BNP Paribas in the purchase, which foresees taking over 12 manufacturing facilities that employ about

40,000 people, according to a joint statement by the companies.

Executives insisted that no job cuts are currently foreseen, and that PSA will respect all existing agreements with workers.

General Motors Co. will keep its manufacturing center in Turin, Italy. GM and PSA will continue to collaborate on electric car technologies and maintain existing supply agreements on some Buick models.

Shares in PSA were up 3.4 percent at 19.46 euros, suggesting investors find the terms of the deal broadly advantageous for the French company.

The purchase marks a major turnaround for PSA, bailed out just three years ago by Chinese investors and the French state. CEO Tavares, recalling PSA’s “near-death experience,” said he hopes to parlay his success to similar savings at Opel, cutting costs through scale and better use of factory capacity.

For GM, the agreement indicates that Barra decided to focus on profits over market share.

GM could redirect the money it has been spending in Europe toward new products and services, such as self-driving cars and ridehailing services, as well as pension obligations and an ongoing share buyback program.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey insisted there is a role for government as well, as “the uncertainty caused by Brexit is harming the U.K. auto sector.”

Factory closures are a concern in Germany as well, especially in an election year.

German Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries and the governors of three German states said in a statement Monday that PSA made a series of commitments regarding “locations, employment and investments.”

PSA executives held talks with unions before finalizing the deal, and a council representing Opel workers said Monday that it obtained guarantees for factories and jobs. The price for Opel is relatively small because of a big pension contribution for Opel’s underfunded plan. GM, which may take a 4.5 billion euro writedown on the deal, will keep most pension plans.(ap)

The distinctive Gajah Mina statue is meant to serve as a tourist attraction, especially for foreign visitors. Gajah Mina is an elephantheaded fish from Hindu mythology that is often found in the adorment of temple coumpund walls. Chief of LPM Pererenan, Putu Wiyadnyana, said that tthey hope that the iconic sculpture will contribute to more tourists visiting the area.

(APBDes). Since the new icon was unveiled, many travellers have come to take pictures here at sunset.

Like many other tourist attractions, the number of tourists who visit this beach that is located between Echo Beach and Seseh Beach, fluctuates depending ont the time of year. On public holidays, it is mostly domestic visitors who come to Pererenan Beach, while visitors from Australia, Europe and Asia visit when the waves are good for surfing. A number of

leading brands have also hosted several internatinoal kite surfing competitions here. As is the case with neighbouring beaches, Pererenan beach is a popular destination for kite surfers. There are also two companies that offer horse back riding tours along the beach and in nearby rice paddy fields.

Local customary village authorities charge IDR 3,000 for cars and IDR 2,00 for motorcycles to park by the beach. The local LPM has plans to fix the road that leads to the beach and to have public toilets put in that will be decorated with mermaids statues. There are also plans to build stalls for vendors, enlarge the parking lot and create a venue for holding customary

rituals that will be arranged by the customary village.

The arrangement of the beach area has been ongoign intensively since 2015 and have yielded good results with approximately 90 to 150 people visiting the beach daily.

A number of other attractions in Pererenan village have also been worked on in order to support this area that is seeing more and more visitors. For instance, the local river has been restored a s a hbaitat for shrimp and a breeding site has been established to reintroduce the magpie robin. These efforts were undertaken by Pererenan Gumi Lestrai (PGL), a community ecosystem preservation group.

It is one of the fabulous waterfall on the island that is located in the village of Munduk, north Bali.

seized it and cited it as fact. Mr Trump has defined a new enemy at whom he can direct all the ire he feels about the Russia issue that won’t go away. Without evidence, it’s hard to see how this goes any further.

Twice now, Trump officials have been caught misleading or lying about their contact with the Russian ambassador.

Questions over his campaign’s links with Russia will continue and that is perhaps the true source of the president’s anger. (ap)

Flood affects 22 villages in C Kalimantan`s Seruyan district

BERLIN - The German government on Monday rejected Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s comparison of current German policies to the Nazi era, urged both sides to stay “calm and level-headed” and not lose sight of the close ties that bind the two NATO allies.

“We firmly reject any comparisons between the policies of the democratic Federal Republic of Germany and the Nazi times,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a regular government news conference.

“Such comparisons are always absurd and out of place because they lead to only to one thing: a trivialisation of crimes against humanity.”

Seibert said Germany would continue to allow Turkish politicians to speak in Germany as long as they were open about their intentions and did not import Turkish conflicts to Germany. He also said the European Union should investigate to ensure that funds paid to Turkey to pave the way for its accession to the EU were achieving their intended purpose.

NAZI PERIOD Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan accused Germany on Sunday of “fascist actions” reminiscent of Nazi times in a growing row over the cancellation of political rallies aimed at drumming up support for him among 1.5 million Turkish citizens in Germany.

German politicians reacted with shock and anger. German Justice Minister Heiko Maas told broadcaster ARD that Erdogan’s comments were “absurd, disgraceful and outlandish” and designed to provoke a reaction from Berlin. But he cautioned against banning Erdogan from visiting Germany or breaking off diplomatic ties, saying that such moves would push Ankara “straight into the arms of (Russian President Vladmir) Putin, which no one wants”.

The deputy leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party said the Turkish president was “reacting like a wilful child that cannot have his way”, while a top leader of the CDU’s Bavarian sister party described Erdogan as the “despot of the Bosphorus” and demanded an apology.

German authorities withdrew permission last week for two rallies by Turkish citizens in German cities at which Turkish ministers were to urge a “Yes” vote in a referendum next month on granting Erdogan sweeping new presidential powers. (rtr)

South Korea’s military said the missiles were unlikely to have been intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), which can reach the United States. The missiles flew on average 1,000 km (620 miles) and reached a height of 260 km (160 miles).

Some of the missiles landed in waters as close as 300 km (190 miles) from Japan’s northwest coast, Japan’s Defence Minister Tomomi Inada said in Tokyo.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said “strong protests” had been lodged with nuclear-armed North Korea, which has carried out a series of nuclear and missile tests in defiance of U.N. resolutions.

“The launches are clearly in violation of Security Council resolutions. It is an extremely dangerous action,” Abe told parliament.

South Korea’s acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn condemned the launches as a direct challenge to the international community and said Seoul would swiftly deploy a U.S. anti-missile defence system despite angry objections from China.

The missiles were launched from the Tongchang-ri region near the reclusive North’s border with China, South Korean military spokesman Roh Jae-cheon told a briefing. It was too early to say what the relatively low altitude indicated about the types of missiles, he said.

Joshua Pollack, editor of the U.S.-based Non-Proliferation Review, said it did not appear the North had launched an ICBM. “It sounds like a field exercise involving deployed missiles, probably ones we’ve seen be-

fore,” Pollack said.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, also told Reuters there were no indications so far that North Korea had tested an ICBM. The U.S. military said it detected and tracked what it assessed was a North Korean missile launch, but it did not pose a threat to North America.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily news briefing that China, which is holding its annual meeting of the National People’s Congress, had noted North Korea’s latest action.

Saudi King Salman embraces “selfie” on tour across Asia

JAKARTA - Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has embraced the “selfie”, taking part in a number of light-hearted self-shot pictures and videos during his tour of Asia that contrast with the pomp and formality of most of the octogenarian monarch’s trips abroad.

In the first days of a lengthy regional tour, the king has appeared with top-ranking officials in Indonesia and Malaysia in pictures and clips that have been shared online millions of times.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo shared on Facebook a video of himself dining with the king at the presidential palace in Bogor, near the capital Jakarta. In the video, both men comment on the visit, the first to Indonesia by a Saudi king in nearly five decades, and give viewers a rare peek into a state event.

As Widodo holds what appears to be a phone camera, the king is seen dining on soup and using gold-coloured cutlery before commenting in Arabic on his 12-day visit to Indonesia, the longest leg of his month-long tour of Asia.

“I’m very happy to be here in Indonesia and with the Indonesian people,” King Salman says to the camera, as an interpreter sitting behind him translates into Bahasa Indonesia. The king was also photographed posing for a selfie with former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and her daughter Puan Maharani, who is a member of Widodo’s cabinet.

Indonesia has a high concentration of Facebook and Twitter users, and selfies are a mainstay of social media in the world’s fourth most populous country. Earlier this week, Salman was seen in a selfie posted on Twitter with Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia, during the first stop on his sweep across Asia.

Though rare, Salman has made occasional appearances on social media before, including when he posed last year for a selfie in Qatar with a teen who survived cancer.

The king is travelling with an entourage of several hundred people and nearly 500 tonnes of luggage, including two goldcoloured escalators.

After Jakarta, the delegation is set to take a break in the resort island of Bali, where up to four hotels and 300 luxury cars have been booked for more than a week, according to local police and a tour agency association. Australian leader to continue free-trade talks in Indonesia

CANBERRA — Australia’s prime minister said Monday that he was looking forward to discussing a free-trade deal with Indonesia while attending a regional forum in Jakarta. Malcom Turnbull on Tuesday will attend the first Indian Ocean Rim Association leaders’ summit in the 20-year history of the 21-nation organization.

Turnbull’s one-day visit to Jakarta comes nine days after Joko “Jokowi” Widodo ended his first Australian visit as Indonesia’s president.

The leaders used that Sydney visit to commit to finalizing a bilateral free-trade agreement this year after 17 years of negotiations. Jokowi said the deal must remove all Australian barriers to the importation of Indonesian palm oil and paper. Turnbull has welcomed trade concessions that Indonesia has already made, including reduced tariffs on Australian sugar and fewer

restrictions on Australian live cattle imports.

“We’re making very good progress there and I look forward to discussing it further when I’m in Jakarta tomorrow,” Turnbull told reporters in the Australian city of Melbourne.

Turnbull later said in a statement that Australia had a fundamental interest in ensuring economic development in the Indian Ocean region and enhancing dialogue on shared security challenges.

The summit will agree to a statement on shared values and objectives, including a commitment to international law, and a declaration on countering violent extremism.

Australian interest in the grouping of predominantly developing states on the Indian Ocean fringe has deepened in the past five years, with the economic growth of India and China and a relative decline in influence in the region of the United States, Australia’s most important strategic partner, Brewster said. PARIS - Pre-race favourite Romain Bardet has been disqualified from the Paris-Nice after being towed by his team car following a crash on the opening stage, organisers said on Sunday.

Frenchman Bardet, second overall in last year’s Tour de France, fell off his bike with about 23 kilometres left and made his way back to a group of chasers by breaching the rules on team car assistance.

The disqualification is a blow for the AG2RLa Mondiale rider as the week-long Paris-Nice race was an early goal ahead of July’s Tour de France.

“We made a mistake, which is the fruit of a lack of clear focus. I am very sorry because nothing justified the assistance of the team car for that,” Bardet said.

“There is a now a safeguard against a practice too often tolerated in the peloton. I sincerely apologise to organisers and to the public.”

In 2015, Italian Vincenzo Nibali was disqualified from the Tour of Spain (Vuelta) after he also held onto his team car to make up lost ground.

The wind-hit stage was won by France’s Arnaud Demare as Alberto Contador’s chances of winning a third Paris-Nice title took a hit when he fell behind his main rivals.

Malaysia seeks venue switch for North Korea qualifier KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia have asked for an Asian Cup qualifier against North Korea to be moved to a neutral venue as the strain in relations between the countries following the killing of Kim Jong Un’s estranged halfbrother continues to escalate.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) General Secretary Hamidin Mohd Amin confirmed a request to not travel to Pyongyang for this month’s fixture had been made to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after talks with the country’s authorities.

“The government have asked us not to go to Pyongyang,” Hamidin told Reuters on Monday. “We asked the AFC today if we could play in a neutral venue. We expect a decision by the end of this week.”

The two nations were due to open the final phase of qualifying for the 2019 Asian Cup finals with a Group B encounter at Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Stadium on March 28.

Lebanon and Hong Kong have also been drawn in the same pool with the top two teams advancing to the finals in the United Arab Emirates. An alternative venue has yet to be put forward and AFC said it would issue a statement on the matter later on Monday.

Malaysia seeks venue switch for North Korea qualifier KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia have asked for an Asian Cup qualifier against North Korea to be moved to a neutral venue as the strain in relations between the countries following the killing of Kim Jong Un’s estranged halfbrother continues to escalate.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) General Secretary Hamidin Mohd Amin confirmed a request to not travel to Pyongyang for this month’s fixture had been made to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after talks with the country’s authorities.

“The government have asked us not to go to Pyongyang,” Hamidin told Reuters on Monday. “We asked the AFC today if we could play in a neutral venue. We expect a decision by the end of this week.”

The two nations were due to open the final phase of qualifying for the 2019 Asian Cup finals with a Group B encounter at Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Stadium on March 28.

Lebanon and Hong Kong have also been drawn in the same pool with the top two teams advancing to the finals in the United Arab Emirates. An alternative venue has yet to be put forward and AFC said it would issue a statement on the matter later on Monday.

PARIS - Pre-race favourite Romain Bardet has been disqualified from the Paris-Nice after being towed by his team car following a crash on the opening stage, organisers said on Sunday.

Frenchman Bardet, second overall in last year’s Tour de France, fell off his bike with about 23 kilometres left and made his way back to a group of chasers by breaching the rules on team car assistance.

The disqualification is a blow for the AG2RLa Mondiale rider as the week-long Paris-Nice race was an early goal ahead of July’s Tour de France.

“We made a mistake, which is the fruit of a lack of clear focus. I am very sorry because nothing justified the assistance of the team car for that,” Bardet said.

“There is a now a safeguard against a practice too often tolerated in the peloton. I sincerely apologise to organisers and to the public.”

In 2015, Italian Vincenzo Nibali was disqualified from the Tour of Spain (Vuelta) after he also held onto his team car to make up lost ground.

The wind-hit stage was won by France’s Arnaud Demare as Alberto Contador’s chances of winning a third Paris-Nice title took a hit when he fell behind his main rivals.

seized it and cited it as fact. Mr Trump has defined a new enemy at whom he can direct all the ire he feels about the Russia issue that won’t go away. Without evidence, it’s hard to see how this goes any further.

Twice now, Trump officials have been caught misleading or lying about their contact with the Russian ambassador.

Questions over his campaign’s links with Russia will continue and that is perhaps the true source of the president’s anger. (ap)

Flood affects 22 villages in C Kalimantan`s Seruyan district

BERLIN - The German government on Monday rejected Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s comparison of current German policies to the Nazi era, urged both sides to stay “calm and level-headed” and not lose sight of the close ties that bind the two NATO allies.

“We firmly reject any comparisons between the policies of the democratic Federal Republic of Germany and the Nazi times,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a regular government news conference.

“Such comparisons are always absurd and out of place because they lead to only to one thing: a trivialisation of crimes against humanity.”

Seibert said Germany would continue to allow Turkish politicians to speak in Germany as long as they were open about their intentions and did not import Turkish conflicts to Germany. He also said the European Union should investigate to ensure that funds paid to Turkey to pave the way for its accession to the EU were achieving their intended purpose.

NAZI PERIOD Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan accused Germany on Sunday of “fascist actions” reminiscent of Nazi times in a growing row over the cancellation of political rallies aimed at drumming up support for him among 1.5 million Turkish citizens in Germany.

German politicians reacted with shock and anger. German Justice Minister Heiko Maas told broadcaster ARD that Erdogan’s comments were “absurd, disgraceful and outlandish” and designed to provoke a reaction from Berlin. But he cautioned against banning Erdogan from visiting Germany or breaking off diplomatic ties, saying that such moves would push Ankara “straight into the arms of (Russian President Vladmir) Putin, which no one wants”.

The deputy leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party said the Turkish president was “reacting like a wilful child that cannot have his way”, while a top leader of the CDU’s Bavarian sister party described Erdogan as the “despot of the Bosphorus” and demanded an apology.

German authorities withdrew permission last week for two rallies by Turkish citizens in German cities at which Turkish ministers were to urge a “Yes” vote in a referendum next month on granting Erdogan sweeping new presidential powers. (rtr)

South Korea’s military said the missiles were unlikely to have been intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), which can reach the United States. The missiles flew on average 1,000 km (620 miles) and reached a height of 260 km (160 miles).

Some of the missiles landed in waters as close as 300 km (190 miles) from Japan’s northwest coast, Japan’s Defence Minister Tomomi Inada said in Tokyo.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said “strong protests” had been lodged with nuclear-armed North Korea, which has carried out a series of nuclear and missile tests in defiance of U.N. resolutions.

“The launches are clearly in violation of Security Council resolutions. It is an extremely dangerous action,” Abe told parliament.

South Korea’s acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn condemned the launches as a direct challenge to the international community and said Seoul would swiftly deploy a U.S. anti-missile defence system despite angry objections from China.

The missiles were launched from the Tongchang-ri region near the reclusive North’s border with China, South Korean military spokesman Roh Jae-cheon told a briefing. It was too early to say what the relatively low altitude indicated about the types of missiles, he said.

Joshua Pollack, editor of the U.S.-based Non-Proliferation Review, said it did not appear the North had launched an ICBM. “It sounds like a field exercise involving deployed missiles, probably ones we’ve seen be-

fore,” Pollack said.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, also told Reuters there were no indications so far that North Korea had tested an ICBM. The U.S. military said it detected and tracked what it assessed was a North Korean missile launch, but it did not pose a threat to North America.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily news briefing that China, which is holding its annual meeting of the National People’s Congress, had noted North Korea’s latest action.

“All sides should exercise restraint and not do anything to irritate each other to worsen regional tensions,” Geng said, referring to both the missile launch and U.S.-South Korean military exercises. (rtr)

Saudi King Salman embraces “selfie” on tour across Asia

JAKARTA - Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has embraced the “selfie”, taking part in a number of light-hearted self-shot pictures and videos during his tour of Asia that contrast with the pomp and formality of most of the octogenarian monarch’s trips abroad.

In the first days of a lengthy regional tour, the king has appeared with top-ranking officials in Indonesia and Malaysia in pictures and clips that have been shared online millions of times.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo shared on Facebook a video of himself dining with the king at the presidential palace in Bogor, near the capital Jakarta. In the video, both men comment on the visit, the first to Indonesia by a Saudi king in nearly five decades, and give viewers a rare peek into a state event.

As Widodo holds what appears to be a phone camera, the king is seen dining on soup and using gold-coloured cutlery before commenting in Arabic on his 12-day visit to Indonesia, the longest leg of his month-long tour of Asia.

“I’m very happy to be here in Indonesia and with the Indonesian people,” King Salman says to the camera, as an interpreter sitting behind him translates into Bahasa Indonesia. The king was also photographed posing for a selfie with former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and her daughter Puan Maharani, who is a member of Widodo’s cabinet.

Indonesia has a high concentration of Facebook and Twitter users, and selfies are a mainstay of social media in the world’s fourth most populous country. Earlier this week, Salman was seen in a selfie posted on Twitter with Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia, during the first stop on his sweep across Asia.

Though rare, Salman has made occasional appearances on social media before, including when he posed last year for a selfie in Qatar with a teen who survived cancer.

The king is travelling with an entourage of several hundred people and nearly 500 tonnes of luggage, including two goldcoloured escalators.

Australian leader to continue free-trade talks in Indonesia

CANBERRA — Australia’s prime minister said Monday that he was looking forward to discussing a free-trade deal with Indonesia while attending a regional forum in Jakarta. Malcom Turnbull on Tuesday will attend the first Indian Ocean Rim Association leaders’ summit in the 20-year history of the 21-nation organization.

Turnbull’s one-day visit to Jakarta comes nine days after Joko “Jokowi” Widodo ended his first Australian visit as Indonesia’s president.

The leaders used that Sydney visit to commit to finalizing a bilateral free-trade agreement this year after 17 years of negotiations. Jokowi said the deal must remove all Australian barriers to the importation of Indonesian palm oil and paper. Turnbull has welcomed trade concessions that Indonesia has already made, including reduced tariffs on Australian sugar and fewer

restrictions on Australian live cattle imports.

“We’re making very good progress there and I look forward to discussing it further when I’m in Jakarta tomorrow,” Turnbull told reporters in the Australian city of Melbourne.

I n d o n e s i a n t r a d e o ff i c i a l Thomas Lembong, chairman of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board, told Australia’s Fairfax Media that his government wanted to see “concrete proof of unfettered and natural trade” in Indonesia palm oil, paper and wood products.

David Brewster, an Australian National University researcher on Indian Ocean security, said he expected Turnbull would be one of the few national leaders to attend the summit that will be chaired by Jokowi. “His attendance at the meeting is probably primarily driven by the Jakarta relationship, wanting to

show solidarity with Jokowi,” Brewster said.

Turnbull later said in a statement that Australia had a fundamental interest in ensuring economic development in the Indian Ocean region and enhancing dialogue on shared security challenges.

The summit will agree to a statement on shared values and objectives, including a commitment to international law, and a declaration on countering violent extremism.

Australian interest in the grouping of predominantly developing states on the Indian Ocean fringe has deepened in the past five years, with the economic growth of India and China and a relative decline in influence in the region of the United States, Australia’s most important strategic partner, Brewster said. GM sells European brands to France’s Peugeot

PARIS — General Motors is selling its unprofitable European car business to the French maker of Peugeot, marking the American company’s retreat from a major market and raising concerns of job cuts in the region.

With the 2.2 billion euro ($2.33 billion) deal announced Monday, GM is giving up brands — Opel in Germany and Vauxhall in Britain — that have given it a foothold in the world’s third-largest auto market since the 1920s. They have not, however, made a combined profit in 18 years despite multiple turnaround efforts.

For the once-struggling PSA Group, which makes Peugeot and Citroen cars and has just recently reshaped its own business, the acquisition will turn it into Europe’s No. 2 automaker after Volkswagen.

Carlos Tavares, the CEO of PSA, said the deal was “a game-changer for PSA.” GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra said it was a “win” for both sides. “This was a difficult decision for General Motors but we are united in belief that it is the right one,” she told reporters in Paris.

Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, which caused a plunge in the pound, weighed on the decision. “Without Brexit, we would have reached the breakeven goal” at last in 2016 for the European business, Barra said.

PSA will join with French bank BNP Paribas in the purchase, which foresees taking over 12 manufacturing facilities that employ about

40,000 people, according to a joint statement by the companies.

Executives insisted that no job cuts are currently foreseen, and that PSA will respect all existing agreements with workers.

General Motors Co. will keep its manufacturing center in Turin, Italy. GM and PSA will continue to collaborate on electric car technologies and maintain existing supply agreements on some Buick models.

Shares in PSA were up 3.4 percent at 19.46 euros, suggesting investors find the terms of the deal broadly advantageous for the French company.

The purchase marks a major turnaround for PSA, bailed out just three years ago by Chinese investors and the French state. CEO Tavares, recalling PSA’s “near-death experience,” said he hopes to parlay his success to similar savings at Opel, cutting costs through scale and better use of factory capacity.

For GM, the agreement indicates that Barra decided to focus on profits over market share.

PSA executives held talks with unions before finalizing the deal, and a council representing Opel workers said Monday that it obtained guarantees for factories and jobs. The price for Opel is relatively small because of a big pension contribution for Opel’s underfunded plan. Like many other tourist attractions, the number of tourists who visit this beach that is located between Echo Beach and Seseh Beach, fluctuates depending ont the time of year. On public holidays, it is mostly domestic visitors who come to Pererenan Beach, while visitors from Australia, Europe and Asia visit when the waves are good for surfing. A number of

leading brands have also hosted several internatinoal kite surfing competitions here. As is the case with neighbouring beaches, Pererenan beach is a popular destination for kite surfers. There are also two companies that offer horse back riding tours along the beach and in nearby rice paddy fields.

Local customary village authorities charge IDR 3,000 for cars and IDR 2,00 for motorcycles to park by the beach. The local LPM has plans to fix the road that leads to the beach and to have public toilets put in that will be decorated with mermaids statues. There are also plans to build stalls for vendors, enlarge the parking lot and create a venue for holding customary

rituals that will be arranged by the customary village.

The arrangement of the beach area has been ongoign intensively since 2015 and have yielded good results with approximately 90 to 150 people visiting the beach daily.

A number of other attractions in Pererenan village have also been worked on in order to support this area that is seeing more and more visitors. For instance, the local river has been restored a s a hbaitat for shrimp and a breeding site has been established to reintroduce the magpie robin. These efforts were undertaken by Pererenan Gumi Lestrai (PGL), a community ecosystem preservation group.

Munduk Waterfall

It is one of the fabulous waterfall on the island that is located in the village of Munduk, north Bali.

The path down to the waterfall is densely planted with clove and coffee trees as well as Avocado, Taro, Banana and some Durian tree. You can have such a great exercise while learning about the local farm and getting to know better of the local vegetation along the path down to the mighty waterfall.

On the verge of dissapearing, Leko to be performed at BAF

TABANAN - The Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2017 will be held next June in Denpasar. A number of districts have already started preparing artists who will give their best this annual event. The district of Tabanan for example plans to feature a performance of Leko from Tunjuk village that is rarely staged and on the verge of dissapearing as an art form.

Head of the Tabanan Culture Agency, Gusti Supanji, said that between 1919 to 1933 this art form was doing well and was even grought to other villages as entertainment for ceremonial Manusa yadnya.

Unfortunately, Tunjuk’s Leko art has experienced it sups and downs in response to changing times.

Around 1957 dancers and gamelan players from Tujuk Kelod starting really dedicateing themselves to Leko allowing it to survive to this day.

“We want to bring this art formo back to our community so that it does not fade into history”, said Supanji”, accompanied by the art division head and the artists.

The Leko dance is classified as a dance meant for the entertainement of the community although it is often staged as an accompaniment to religious ceremonies, three-month baby ritual, tooth-filing ritual and so forth.

Although this dance itself functioned as entertainment, the performace of the Leko dance respects religious values so that Leko perfromances are always preceded with a ritual in honor of

the location of the performance, the gamelan instruments to be played and the costume and accessories to be worn by the dancers, including some of the headresses that are made sacred.

Leko dance is categorised as a folk dance of the Legong variety and is accompained bamboo instruments. The Leko dance has elements of pelegongan in terms of dance movements, costume, storyline and musical instruments, that in many Legong dances was later replaced with the iron gamelan.

Supanji explained that art troupes who perform at the annual art extravagancy known as the Bali Arts Festival are chosen by subdistrict and are selected by turn every year. The culture agency does this to make sure that all sub districts have a change to perform at some point.

All the artist who will perfomr in the BAF 2018 were selected based on a competition that was held in 2017. “We have sent letters to the subdistrict related to the plan to hold competitons for next years festival”, he said.

Tabanan however is still experiencing financial obstacle to creating an excellent performance.

Surely, considerable funding fis requred for coaching and training the art troupes and other supporting matters.

Actually Tabanan has an extraordinary potential in the art field. Nevertheless, this obstacle does not deter the intention of the artists of Tabanan to deliver their performances. (kmb28)

Earlier, King Salman who arrived in Bali on Saturday (Mar. 4) will be on vacation until Thursday (Mar. 9). Regarding the extension of King Salman’s holiday was disclosed by PT Jasa Angkasa Semesta (JAS), service provider of the aircraft ground handling of the Saudi Arabia’s delegates in Bali.

According to Deputy Director of Operations of PT. JAS, Subiyono, the Saudi Arabian Airlines entrusted its ground handling to his company. He said that on Saturday (Mar. 12), his company will handle one flight of the King Salman’s entourage.

He explained that King Salman’s entourage will start to leave Bali on Wednesday (Mar. 8). JAS will handle one flight of the en-

tourage on that day. Meanwhile, on Friday (Mar. 11), JAS will also handle three other flights of the entourage.

In the meantime, the preparation of the King Salman’s holiday in Bali has been commenced since February 16. A total of 11 flights are handled by JAS especially for the holidays of King Salman in Bali.

In details, on February 1622 there were totally five flights handled. Then, on Friday (Mar. 3), there was one flight including the entourage that landed at the Ngurah Rai International Airport.

“While on Saturday (Mar. 4), there are five airlines, including that of King Salman using B747-400 aircraft with registration number

HZHM1,” he said.

Other than addressing the arrival of King Salman, the luggage and other needs of the entourage during a holiday in Bali were transported directly from Saudi Arabia.

A total of 145 tons of cargo were handled by JAS for this entourage.

Moreover, the vehicle of King Salman namely Mercedes S600 and escalators are also brought in from Saudi Arabia.

He said there were a total of 200 additional staff were brought to Bali specifically to handle the arrival of King Salman. He added that JAS also brought in the main deck loader (MDL) from Cengkareng to Bali to drop off the Mercedes vehicle and the escalator.

“By chance, in Bali JAS does not have any MDL because Bali is not an airport that specifically handles cargo. The MDL weighs 32 tons,” he said. (kmb18)

The findings of the 70-day probe directly accuse the impeached Park of wrongdoing on several charges, including the bribery conspiracy implicating Samsung.

Lee goes on trial for bribery and embezzlement on Thursday amid a corruption scandal that has rocked South Korea and led to the impeachment.

Park, 65, has had her powers suspended since her impeachment by parliament in December. Should the Constitutional Court uphold the impeachment, she would become the country’s first democratically elected president to be thrown out of office, triggering an election in Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

A decision is expected as early as this week.

South Korean law does not allow a sitting president to be indicted unless she is accused of treason. No formal charges can be brought against her until she is either removed from office or her term ends as scheduled in late February 2018.

Her removal from office would subject her to a fresh investigation by state prosecutors.

“Bribery charges related to the president, and the culture blacklist case ... have been transferred to the prosecutors’ office,” special prosecutor Park Young-soo told a televised news conference.

The special prosecutor also said the president was instrumental in blacklisting more than 9,000 artists, authors and movie industry professionals and excluding them from government assistance that constituted an abuse of power.

In a statement detailing the findings of its investigation, the special prosecutor’s office said the National Pension Service voted in favour of a merger of two Samsung Group affiliates in 2015, despite anticipating a 138.8 billion won ($119.87 million) loss.

Opening a new chapter at India’s “grandmothers’ school”

FANGANE - Aajibaichi Shaala is not your ordinary school in India.

The students at “grandmothers’ school” in the village of Fangane are elderly women who are getting the chance to learn to read.

“I love going to school,” Kamal Keshavtupange, 60, told Reuters as she washed clothes outside her home in the village, 120 km (75 miles) east of the financial capital, Mumbai.

India’s literacy rate grew to 74 percent in the decade to 2011, according to the latest census, but female literacy continued to lag the rate for males by a wide margin.

“My knees hurt, so I can’t sit on the floor for long. That’s the only problem. But I still go every day,” said Keshavtupange.

Clad in pink saris, their school uniform, the women walk every afternoon along dusty village paths to their lessons.

“First I finish all my house work, then I go to school. It’s good we

have this in our village,” said 70year-old Drupada Pandurangkedar.

Her eight-year-old granddaughter studies in the government primary school in Fangane.

The women begin class with a prayer and then dive into their lessons, writing on slates to practice.

The school uses teaching aids such as the alphabet painted on tiles which can be read by students with poor eyesight. Many of the aids are made by the students.

Sheetal Prakash More, their 30year-old teacher, said she would like to see women in other villages get the same access to education.

“Every other teacher teaches children. Only I have the opportunity to teach elderly women,” More said.

Mars astronaut radiation shield set for moon mission trial-developer

MONTPELIER — U.S. and Canadian scientists are planning to spend the next five years studying flooding on Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River, which drains the lake north into Quebec, and whether methods can be developed to control future flooding.

Besides studying the causes of past floods, particularly the historic floods in 2011, the scientists will look for ways to better forecast flooding and measures to reduce the effects of future floods, considered likely with weather extremes in an era of climate change.

The scientists conducting the $11.3 million study will look at issues such as what effect the Chambly Canal, which takes vessels around a series of rapids near the Quebec city of SaintJean-sur-Richelieu, could have on flooding, said Jean-Francois Cantin, chief of east hydrological operations for Canada’s National Hydrological Service.

They could also focus on how V-shaped, man-made stone eeltraps, visible in aerial photos of the river shoals, could affect the flow of the river, said Cantin, who is also the Canadian co-chair of the International Lake Champlain Richelieu Study Board.

“The shoals there are really the natural control of the whole

system upstream of Saint-Jeansur-Richelieu, the lake (and) the water levels,” he said.

The board is conducting the study for the International Joint Commission, an organization formed in 1909 to manage boundary water issues between Canada and the United States.

The study began in 2013 in response to historic spring flooding along Lake Champlain in Vermont and New York in 2011 that kept the lake and areas along the river above flood stage for more than two months. The flooding in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, population about 93,000, affected about 3,000 homes in low-lying areas and lasted until mid-June.

The research marks the third time the International Joint Commission has looked at flooding in Lake Champlain and the Richelieu. In 1937, the commission approved construction of a flood control dam near SaintJean-sur-Richelieu that was never finished. In 1981, after a six-year study, the commission concluded that flood forecasting and flood plain regulation were desirable and that a flood control system could be built, but no action was taken.

Cantin said the public will be kept aware of developments as the study progresses. (ap)

HAIFA - A vest designed to shield astronauts from deadly solar particles in deep space is set for trials on a lunar mission ready for deployment on any manned mission to Mars, its Israeli developers said.

The AstroRad Radiation Shield has been devised by Tel Avivbased StemRad, which has already produced and marketed a belt to protect rescue workers from harmful gamma ray radiation emitted in nuclear disasters, such as Chernobyl and Fukushima.

The vest will protect vital human tissue, particularly stem cells, which could be devastated by solar radiation in deep space or on Mars, whose sparse atmosphere offers no protection, StemRad’s CEO Oren Milstein said.

U.S. space agency NASA has said it hopes to send astronauts to Mars in the mid-2030s.

The vest is made of layers that look like a contoured map and will be tailor-made for each astronaut. Non-metallic protective materials will be positioned on each shield to cover the organs of each astronaut.

“This product will enable human deep space exploration.

Our breakthrough has come in creating the architecture of the multi-layered shield to accurately

cover the most important organs,” Milstein said.

StemRad say it has proven the concept in the laboratory and in simulations, but testing will also take place on the Orion spacecraft, a joint project of Lockheed Martin, NASA and the European Space Agency.

Orion is set to orbit the moon unmanned during the debut flight of NASA’s heavy-lift Space Launch System rocket, scheduled for late 2018 but it is also assessing the feasibility of flying two astronauts on that mission.

During the lunar flyby mission, the vest will be strapped to a “phantom” torso dummy, a device used to monitor radiation absorption.

Another phantom will fly unprotected and the two will be analysed after they return to Earth.

NASA had no immediate comment on how the test could be affected if the agency decided to put astronauts on Orion.

Stemrad’s chief technologist, Gideon Waterman, said the vest needed to combine density with

flexibility to protect astronauts while enabling them to move about as freely as possible.

Mock-ups have been made, and the first protective vest is expected to be produced by the end of the year, Milstein said.

“Based on our simulations, we’re sure it works but to be 100 percent sure, we’re sending it up on EM-1,” he said, referring to NASA’s Exploration Mission-1, the first flight of the combined Space Launch System rocket and the Orion capsule.

The Orion will have its own small shelter for solar storms or flares that have dangerous bursts of radiation, and the vest, Milstein said, will offer the same degree of protection so astronauts can keep safe in other parts of the spacecraft.

Astronauts in Earth’s orbit, such as those on the International Space Station, do not face the same risk because they are protected by the planet’s magnetic field which acts as a shield, he added. (rtr)

Govt must manage garbage at Suwung landfill

DENPASAR - After the termination of the business agreement with PT Navigat Organic Energy Indonesia (NOEI) who the Sanitation Management Agency of Sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan) appointed to manage the waste at the Suwung landfill no other invesors have stepped up to take over this role.

There is fear that the lack of waste management at Suwung could adversely affect the surrouding environment. The local govern-

ment therefor has an obligation to carry out waste management until a private company can take over.

On Sunday (Mar. 5) a number of legislators for the Denpasar House of Representatives, including Chairman of the PDI-P Faction, Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa, Chairman of the Democratic Faction, A.A. Susruta Ngurah Putra, brought up this issue.

Kadek Agus stressed that waste management at the Suwung landfill should be a priority for the govern-

ment as the amount of garbage pilling up at the landfill everyday , already exceeds capacity. If things are left as they are garbage will start to spill over into the nearby mangrove. “This would be devasting to the environment” he said.

Ngurah Putra added that if there are no investors or third parties are willing to manage the garbage at the landfill, the government should be forced to intervene. He added that the situation is quite urgetn given

that more garbage piles up everyday.

“Please check and see how many garbage trucks are dumping garbage here everyday. If this garbage is not processed then where will we bury it”, asked this Democratic politician. Based on recent data from the landfill management unit, the Suwung landfill recieves about 1.000 tons of garbage per day, 60 percent of which comes form Denpasar and the other 40 percent form the

rest of Badung. Because noone is processeing the garbage, it is simply being pilling up.

Previously, PT NOEI was accorded 20 years to manage the garbage at the Suwung landfill into as much as 9 MW of electricity. Unfortunately PT NOEI was not successful in holding up their end of the contract and so the contract that was signed on Arpil 2, 2004 was terminated by the government. (kmb12)

Cyber crime disrupts Bali’s security CURRENTLY there are phenomena of cyber crime. It happens because many people have not understood so that their comments on social media are uncontrolled. From the data compiled at the Bali police, in 2013 there were 19 cases of cyber crime and then increased to 54 cases in 2014 and 75 cases in 2015.

It shows an increase every year because currently people have no longer limits in the cyber or social media. Sometimes they are not aware to have violated the rules or laws on electronic information and transaction that could have an impact on unrest. Currently, the cyber crime, especially in Bali, has slightly interfered with the safety of this island. Moreover, there are irresponsible parties that misuse the social media to disrupt the security of Bali. For example, there are negative comments in social media related to the celebration of Nyepi and such a case repeats every year.

“Crime increasingly develops, especially in terms of the method used, although it does not happen globally. Every year, there are many reports about cyber crimes and so are the cases of ATM breaking in by strangers. It means that we have to be prepared to face the crimes in virtual world that will be further growing,” said Director of Special Criminal Investigation Unit at the Bali Police, Kenedy, when speaking at Halo Kamtibmas live broadcast on BaliTV from the lobby of the Bali Police Headquarters some time ago.

In the meantime, the penalties are quite severe according to the Law No.19/2016 on Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE). There are nine articles on prohibited acts that can be threatened with punishment varying from 5 to 12 years. According to Kenedy, in 2016 his institution handled 75 cases, where 10 percent of them were processed and the remaining cases were settled amicably because the reported and the reporting have forgiven each other. The perpetrator or the reported is obliged to make a written statement that it would not repeat such an action again.

“Function of police authority has already been running in the matter of coaching and dissemination. Now, it depends on Balinese people whether they want to change into a good, safe, calm and peaceful community or otherwise. Take advantage of social media properly,” he hoped.

He appealed to Balinese people in particular in order to wisely utilize the social media. Sometimes when sharing information it will quickly spread everywhere. Recipients of the information in the social media should not immediately absorb the information but must check out the truth first. Do not be shared immediately because if it has something to do crimes it means we get involved in a problem. Society must be smarter in filtering the information and sharing the news via social media.

“For the matter of cyber crime, I emphasize the public to be careful to speak, make status, comment or even share something on social media. For example, there was a case last year where someone complained on Facebook about the activities of Nyepi in Bali. The act leads to sensitive case to ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup (SARA) so that it ended in legal process,” said a legal practitioner, Haposan Sihombing.

As a legal practitioner, Haposan appealed to the public if there are problems encountered, it would be better not to be shared in social media because the consequences can be worse and even leads to legal process. In addition, it could result in anarchical deeds if the information shared has something to do with SARA. “Therefore, people must take advantage of social media wisely. It includes the supervision against our children. Social media are better to be utilized to foster a sense of unity, patriotism, social activities and strengthen diversity and other positive activities,” he added. (rah)

Bali must remain national tourism icon

Tourism competition should be examined from all sides and in addition to making improvement to destinations and infrastructure, effective promotion is also necessary. Chief of the Bali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, recently responded to recent strategies for national tourism development by saying that in the case of Indonesia, Bali should remian the primary icon of of tourism in Indonesia. This, he said, is more efficient than spending large amounts of money on promoting new destinations.

Wiraputra added that tourism generated income is one of the fastest ways to overcome the present sluggishness of the economy. Toursim promotion therefor needs to result in attracing foreign tourits.

“The arrival of the King of Saudi Arabia can be seen as evidence that Bali remains a top choice for various circles of potential visitors. It is also noting that Bali as the country’s Indoneisa”, he said.

Given Bali ability to attract foreign visitors, the Ministry of Tourism should be using Bali as their promotional icon. “The Wonderful Indonesia tourism campaign that is currently being aggressivley shared overseas, should be positioning Bali should be featured as an important attraction that can serve to then interest tourists in visiting other parts of Indonesia”, he advised, voicing the vision of Kading Bali.

The visit from the King Salman to Bali will make Bali even more popular as a destinatio for visitors from the Middle East. There is also hope that this visit will strenthen economic relations with businesses from Saudi Arabia particularly in the field of managemen and investment in tourist accomodations and tourism infrastructure.

“I’m sure that tourism promotion is constantly needed. Strategies for promotion should be improved by involving all relevant parties. The management of tourism cannot simply rely on potential markets without taking into account what we have to offer”, he said.

Sutawa also said that Indonesia shoud make a grand design for national tourism so that the development of tourism will mreo evenly distributed and done in a more professional manner. The government, he stressed should pay more

attention to Bali tourism given that it is already positioned as an iconic tourist destinaiton in Indonesia.

“Travelers know more about Bali tourism than Indonesian tourism. By making Bali the main focus of tourism promotion, naturally it will be easier to sell tourism in other parts of Indonesia and be the more effective than promoting products and places that are new to the international market. The national economy can be stregthened through Bali. If tourism in Bali is rolling and stable, I am confident that tourism in other parts of Indonesia will become more well known”, he said.

The next governor of Bali also needs to understand the importance that tourism promotio plays for Bali added Sutawa sayign that we must not think that just because Bali is already popular that promotion is not needed. Given how quickly tourism is developing in other parts of the world promotion remains important for Bali. Without appropriate promotional strategies such as approaching new markets, Bali tourism could become abandoned.

“I also hope that the effectiveness of national tourism promotion is evaluated to see how many people are visiting Indoneisa because of recent promotion and how many are visiting because of Bali’s long standing reknown”, said Sutawa. (dir)

‘Logan’ Roars With Massive $85.3 Million Debut

LOS ANGELES - “Logan” tore into the weekend box office, opening to a massive $85.3 million and proving that moviegoers will show up in force for R-rated comic book movies. The superhero spinoff marks Hugh Jackman’s last turn as Wolverine after 17 years of donning the adamantium claws.

As the movie business grows more saturated with stories about costumed vigilantes, studios are trying to find ways to differentiate their own comic book adaptations.

Like “Deadpool” before it, “Logan” demonstrates that adults will turn out for tentpole fare that is bloodier and more profane than your average X-Men movie.

“Logan” was produced by 20th Century Fox and cost $97 million to make. Set in the near future, it follows Wolverine and an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart), who leaving their hiding place on the Mexican border to help a young mutant (Dafne Keen). James Mangold, who previously collaborated with Jackman on 2013’s “The Wolverine,” directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay. Critics embraced the film, hailing it as a

comic book movie with bite, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman writing that “Logan” “...brings the saga to a satisfying finish.”

Despite “Logan’s” dominance, Blumhouse and Universal’s “Get Out” kept going strong. The lowbudget thriller racked up $26.1 million, bringing its domestic haul to $75.9 million. That’s an impressive return for a film that cost less than $5 million to make.

Lionsgate’s “The Shack” took third place, earning a solid $16.1 million in its first weekend in theaters. The faith-based drama stars Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer and cost $26 million to produce. “The Shack” centers on a man (Sam Worthington) whose religious beliefs are tested following a family tragedy.

Warner Bros.’ “The Lego Batman Movie” and Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 2” rounded out the top five, earning $11.6 million and $4.7 million, respectively. That pushes the Lego spinoff’s box office total to $148.6 million and gives the John Wick followup a domestic gross of $83 million. (rtr)

Watson, the “Harry Potter” movie series co-star and pioneer of the HeForShe campaign to make men advocate for feminism, talked about the photo shoot for the magazine while promoting her latest film, the Disney live action “Beauty and the Beast.”

“It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is about what feminism is,” she said in an interview with Reuters.

“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.

“I’m confused. Most people are confused. No, I’m just always just quietly stunned,” she said.

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump’s public attack on a former president is extremely unusual. While election campaigns are laced with vitriol once the victor enters office there’s at least a public respect for the former White House occupant.

But in an unprecedented attack, President Trump has called the former president Barack Obama “sick”, saying he should be prosecuted for illegally wiretapping him. Donald Trump and Barack Obama have history.

Mr Trump began his attack in 2011 when he started to publicly question whether Mr Obama was born in the United States. That same year, after releasing his birth certificate, Mr Obama mocked the reality TV star at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

The room erupted around an expressionless Mr Trump as Mr Obama cracked jokes about his birther claims, painting him as a ridiculous conspiracy theorist. His humiliation was public and stinging

but Mr Trump didn’t change his course - he continued questioning Mr Obama’s birth and legitimacy for several years. During the 2016 campaign both men took regular swipes at each other.

Mr Obama mocked Mr Trump again - this time over his use of Twitter, saying: “If somebody starts tweeting at three in the morning because SNL made fun of you, then you can’t handle the nuclear codes”.

Candidate Trump went a few steps further, suggesting Mr Obama had some sort of sympathy or even connection with Islamic terrorists.

“There’s something going on,” he said in June last year.

He then claimed that Mr Obama founded IS. But the sour tone sweetened with victory. After

winning the 2016 election the two met in the Oval Office for the very first time.

Mr Trump called his predecessor a “good man” with whom he had “great chemistry”. A month ago, in an interview with Fox News, Mr Trump said of Mr Obama: “We get along, I don’t know if he’ll admit this, but he likes me. I like him.”

Then something changed.
