CALIFORNIA - Hollywood actor Liam Neeson has admitted for the first time that he used to have violent thoughts about killing a black person. The Irish star said the thoughts were sparked after a female friend of his was raped. Neeson said he used to be armed with a cosh weapon on the streets hoping someone “would have a go” at him “about something” so he could kill them. The 66-year-old made his comments during an interview for his new film Cold Pursuit where he talked about how his character turns to anger. Neeson told the Independent: “There’s something primal - God forbid you’ve ever had a member of your family hurt under criminal conditions. “I’ll tell you a story. This is true.” He said the rape happened a while ago and he found out about it after coming back from a trip abroad. “She handled the situation of the rape in the most extraordinary way. “But my immediate reaction was... I asked, did she

know who it was? No. What colour were they? She said it was a black person. “I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be approached by somebody - I’m ashamed to say that - and I did it for maybe a week, hoping some black b*****d would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could kill him.” The Taken star, told the publication it took him over a week to process what had happened to his friend. He continued: “It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that. And I’ve never admitted that, and I’m saying it to a journalist. God forbid. (net)

LONDON - A Spitting Image puppet of Margaret Thatcher, one of the most famous characters from the satirical series, has been put up for auction. The former Conservative prime minister was a prominent target for the show, which ran for 18 series from 1984 to 1996. Famous for lampooning political and cultural figures, Spitting Image also parodied public figures including John Major, Paul Gascoigne and the Queen, and portrayed Baroness Thatcher as a dominant and abusive leader. Her puppet, alongside about 40

others from the show - including novelist Salman Rushdie, actor Tom Hanks, singer Boy George and Thatcher’s husband, Denis - could now fetch thousands at auction after being acquired by collectors Prop Store. Prop Store chief executive Stephen Lane said: “We’re thrilled to be offering such a fantastic selection of puppets from the legendary British television series Spitting Image. “Over 40 puppets and puppet heads are to be sold... including the iconic Margaret Thatcher puppet and many other famous faces,

including Tom Hanks and Robbie Coltrane.” Spitting Image attracted huge viewing figures and won a BAFTA during its 12-year run on ITV. Chris Barrie, best known for Red Dwarf and The Brittas Empire, and Alan Patridge creator Steve Coogan were among the talents to voice the puppets, with the likes of comedian and author Ben Elton, director Richard Curtis and Private Eye editor Ian Hislop among the writers for the show. Baroness Thatcher’s puppet is expected to sell for about £3,000, with the others expected to fetch between £400 and £800. (afp)

UK rescuers launch bid to recover body from Sala’s plane

British crash investigators on Tuesday launched an underwater operation to recover a body from the wreckage of the plane carrying Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala in the Channel. “We are attempting to recover the body. If we are successful, we will consider the feasibility of recovering the aircraft wreckage,” an Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) spokesperson said in a statement. The light aircraft carrying the 28-year-old footballer and pilot David Ibbotson to his new Premier League team Cardiff City disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on January 21. The shipwreck hunter hired

by Sala’s family with the help of funds donated by football stars such as Lionel Messi found the plane wreckage on Sunday. The AAIB has since taken over operations. It revealed on Monday that an unidentified body had been found at the site. But it warned on Tuesday that strong tides “mean we can only use the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for limited periods each day”. “Regardless of the results, we will not be making a further state-

ment until the families have been informed,” it said. - ‘Technically possible’ Shipwreck hunter David Mearns had earlier warned that “time is of the essence” in an underwater operation like the one being launched by Britain off France’s northern coast. “As tragic as the loss is, it’s made much, much worse if the body is never recovered or (the family) never get an answer to what happened,” Mearns said.

“Finding it is just the starting point. The AAIB has got to investigate it.” Sala was flying to join up with Cardiff from his old French team Nantes. His signing was the most expensive in the Welsh club’s history and marked what fans had hoped would be a turning point in its bid to avoid relegation from England’s top division. “There’s no longer any hope,” Horacio Sala, Emiliano’s father, told Fox Sports, acknowledging there was no longer any prospect of finding his son alive. “We hope the two bodies are

inside (the plane). It’s over, the only thing I hope now is that they find them.” Mearns said his discovery of two seat cushions on the French coast last week revealed that the plane had broken up.
