‘Moana’ Tops Slow PostThanksgiving Weekend With $28.4 Million
LOS ANGELES - “Moana” sailed to the top of the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. The Disney animated adventure picked up $28.4 million to push its stateside haul to $119.9 million. Not that “Moana” faced much in the way of competition. The weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be a slow one for the movie business and this year’s edition was in keeping with that tradition. The only major new release, “Incarnate,” failed to sell many tickets, earning $2.6 million and falling short of its expected $4 million to $5 million opening. “Incarnate” centers on a scientist (Aaron Eckhart) who enters the mind of an 11-year-old boy to rid him of an evil spirit. The horror film is the latest offering from BH Tilt, which is trying to contain distribution costs by orchestrating more targeted marketing campaigns for certain theatrical releases. “Incarnate” used digital advertising to try to better reach younger horror fans, and debuted on 1,700 screens, substantially fewer theaters than most studio movies unfurl across. It cost $5 million to produce. “Believe,” a faith-based drama about a Christmas pageant, grossed a quiet $602,519 from 639 locations. Freestyle Releasing backed the film.

Thousands protest corruption, support judiciary in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO - Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in cities across Brazil on Sunday to express disgust with public corruption and outrage at what they say are lawmakers’ attempts to muzzle the judges and prosecutors pursuing those crimes. Protesters, many dressed in the green and yellow of Brazil’s flag, massed along a major artery in Sao Paulo and along Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. Other protests were held in cities around the country. Many demonstrators wore T-shirts or held banners in support of Sergio Moro, the judge who has led a hard-charging investigation into a kickback scheme involving the national oil company, several
construction conglomerates and politicians. The investigation, known as Operation Car Wash, has shocked Brazilians both for the scale of corruption it has revealed and for the commitment of the judiciary to see it through in a country where many feel the rich and powerful act with impunity. But Sunday’s demonstrations also united a motley group of protesters
whose only common cause appeared to be disgust with elected officials. They represented a cross-section of an increasingly fractured Brazil. In addition to those supporting the corruption investigation, some held signs calling for the removal from office of the president and leaders in Congress. Some called for the jailing of a former president now facing corruption charges. Still others were advocating a return to military rule. “I want people who have character running the country,” said Regina Medeiros, a 67-year-old retiree, who held a banner that read: “Let’s finish with political parties
before they finish Brazil.” ‘’People are losing faith in other human beings,” she added. Around 15,000 people protested in Sao Paulo, according to an estimate from military police; they said they did not have a number for demonstrations in Rio de Janeiro. At least another 40,000 people came out in scores of other cities around Brazil, including the capital of Brasilia, according to estimates from military police published by the G1 news portal. Many hoped that after former President Dilma Rousseff was impeached and removed from office earlier this year, Brazilian politics
would settle, and reforms proposed by the new president might pull the economy out of deep recession. But instead, those reforms have met with significant protests, President Michel Temer has seen his popularity plummet, and the economic crisis appears to be worsening.

Gianyar - There is sure to be an increase in tourists visiting Bali throughout December 2016 as Christmas and New Year are what is known as high season. A number of tourist attraction on the island remain popular, including Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, Gianyar A.A. Dalem Jagadhita, explained that the fluctuation in the number of tourists who visit Gianyar, will most likely show an tend towards increase in December. “We have already noticed that tourists
have started to throng a number of oturist attractinos in Ubud”, he said. He confirmed that visits by both short and long term visitors was down in November, but remians optimistic about this being compensated for in December
and allow the targetted number of tourists to be acheieved. “For sure, let’s wait for further data”, he said. Meanwhile, six local governmenr-run tourist attractions in Gianyar saw a total of 698,191 visitors betwenn Janyary and August 2016. Tirta Empul was the most popular with 339,954 visitors, followed by Goa Gaja with 210,983 visitors. “Like last year, these two destinations remain the most popular”, he said.
Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring is ranked as third most popular with a total of 119,601 visitors; followed by Gunung Kawi Sebatu (23,234 visitors); Yeh Pulu (5,240 visitors); and Sidan ecotourism (208 visitors). “Sidan ecotourism is indeed has the lowest number of visitors with records showing just 164 visitors in March, 11 visitors in July and 14 in August. We are therefor conducting a study to see how we can increase the number of
people who visit this attractino”, he explained. Based on data from the Gianyar Tourism Office, there were a total of 1,225, 377 foreign (849,756) and domestic (375,621) tourists who visied tourist attractions that are managed by the government of Gianyar as well as those that are privately managed, including customary villages. “The Gianyar Tourism Office records 19 tourist attractions in the region.” he said. Rainy season, crossing to Terunyan cemetery declines

BANGLI - The number of tourist crossing Lake Batur to visite Trunyan village cemetery in Kintamani has decreased in the last few weeks as heavy rains have been pouring down throughout Bangli and surrounding areas. The treasurer of a rowboat group from Terunyan village named Made Sujarah, acknowledged that since the rainy season started, the number of tourists renting paddle boats to cross to Terunyan cemetery has decreased slightly. We now only charted about 2 or three boats a day. “This Sunday, five boats made the corssing”, he said on Sunday (Dec4). When the weather is good, about 10 to 15 boats bring tourist to Trunyan village everyday. Each boat carres between 2 and 6 passengers. There are more domestic than foregin tourists who take the boats to visit Trunyan cemetary. “During school holidays and feast days, the number of visitors increases”, he explained. Sujarah mentioned that the tariff for crossing by rowboat is cheaper than by bigger boats. Two domestic tourists are charged about IDR 280,000 per rowboat. “The advantage of using rowboat to cross is that travelers can enjoy the scenery with ease”, he said. Trunyan cemetary is widely known to travelers because of the unique way that they leave the dead on the ground without burying them. To get to the cemetery of Trunyan village, travelers can cross by boat from Kedisan Pier or from a small pier in the village center. (kmb40)

AMLAPURA — Trucks piled up along the road into Padangbai Harbor, Manggis, on Thursday night (Dec. 1) after the Lembar Pier in Lombok was damaged. Supervisor of ASDP Padangbai Harbor, Faizal Arief Rahman, when met on Friday (Dec. 2) explained that trucks had to be held in Padangbai Harbor on the Lembar Pier was still being repaired. Repairs were ongoign until evening and it was not until Thursday night (Dec 1) at around 9PM that trucks
were able to start crossing again. Thursday (Dec. 1) because at the same time a repair was being made at the Lembar Pier. “Lembar’s pier 1 was damaged but pier 2 and an emmergency pioer were still operating. The emmergency pier can only accommodate large sized vessels”, he added.
It was not until Friday (Dec. 2), that the queue of trucks in Padangbai Harbour and Lembar Hrbour started to clear up. Many truck divers were disspointed by the wait because it meant that they had to spend more money as they waited to delivers goods to Lombok. A driver from Bima named Amirudin, complained saying that this happens all the time and becomes an even worse problem when drivers in Padangbai are not
given notice and are forced to sit in the parking lot for not apparent reason. “We are given a very small allowance for our meals, so when we are trapped in congestion for days, it makes things very hard on us”,he said. This situation aggrieves drivers at Padangbai Harbour both in terms of cost and travel time.. Under normal circumstances it takes three hours to board the vessels, however frequentlyt hey are made to wait
more than 24 hours sometimes even days. Faizal Rahman Arief added that frequent traffic congestion at Padangbai Harbor is not only Lembar harbour is often damaged but is also due to the increase in the volume of trucks crossing from Lembar to Padangbai. know we’ve got a lot of habitat here. All we were missing were the fishers.” Fishers historically were found throughout much of the forested areas of the West Coast. But they declined in numbers due to trapping in the 1800s and early 1900s, and the loss of forest habitats. By the mid-1900s they were eliminated from Washington state. The solitary animal, which hunts snowshoe hares, rodents and small mammals, were listed as state endangered species in 1998. They’re one of the few predators of porcupines and are found only in North America. While common in the Northeast and Midwest, they’re rare in the Northwest. Population estimates of West Coast fishers today are anywhere from a couple hundred to a few thousand, mostly in southern Oregon and Northern California. More recently, West Coast fishers have faced threats from illegal pesticide use by marijuana growers and other threats. But they’re slowly making a comeback in Washington through reintroduction efforts involving WDFW, Conservation Northwest, the National Park Service and other partners. “These animals were here before us and so it’s our duty to take
care of them,” Hanford McCloud, a Nisqually Indian Tribe council member, said during a ceremony before the fishers were released on park land designated for the tribe’s use. Several First Nations people traveled with the fishers, some that were captured First Nations land in British Columbia. The first fishers, about 90 in all, were reintroduced in Washington state in Olympic National Park starting in 2008. Those animals are reproducing and expanding its geographic range. The second phase of the project involves relocating fishers from British Columbia into the southwest Cascade Mountains and later into the North Cascades. The goal is to reintroduce 80 fishers to each region. “We feel like we’re making headway and we’re getting good positive results. It’s too early to say that we’re establishing a selfsustaining population but it sure is looking positive,” said Lewis. The recovery efforts, however, comes as conservation groups have sued the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, alleging the federal agency failed to consider the best scientific evidence when it decided not to provide the fisher protections under the Endangered Species Act. Supreme Court strengthens verdict of District Court
Margriet still sentenced to life, Agustay ten years DENPASAR — The effort to be free from the bondage of law attempted by Margriet CH Megawe over the case of Engeline murder with the legal attempt of cassation did not produce results. The judges of Supreme Court rejected the appeal filed by the convicted person and this precisely upheld the verdict of district court and high court. With the verdict, Margriet remains to be sentenced to life.
Similar verdict is also received by Agustay Hamda May. Supreme Court’s judges rejected the cassation and he was sentenced for 10 years in prison. The verdict was received by Denpasar District Court’s judges prosecuting the case since the beginning. In the meantime, legal counsel of Agustay, Haposan Sihombing, when confirmed on Friday (Dec. 2) also admitted the verdict of the Supreme Court.
He will immediately inform it to Agustay. “Yes, I have received a copy of the cassation verdict of the Supreme Court from the Denpasar District Court. We will immediately notify Agustay and later we return it to our client how his response will look like,” said Haposan. The verdict was actually decided on October 26, 2016 to convict Agustay. The judge examining the
appeal file was chaired by Dr. H. Andi Samsan Nganro together with the members consisting of H Eddy Army and Dr. H. Margono. It is the verdict of these judges rejecting the applicant’s appeal of first cassation (prosecutor) and rejected the appeal by the second applicant (Agustay Handa May). Haposan Sihombing said that he will not seek judicial review because there is no new evidence or facts.
As for the convict Margriet in the verdict of the Supreme Court, with the same date and judge, declared to reject the appeal filed by her legal counsel team from the Hotman Sitompoel Associates. There has been no official statement from the Margriet related to the verdict of the Supreme Court related to the murder case of Engeline on Jalan Sedap Malam, Denpasar. (kmb37)
Molotov cocktail starts fire at tourism campus GIANYAR — A molotov cocktail exploded at the Bali Tourism Iraining institute (LP2B) Gianyar, on Saturday (Dec. 3). Police have confimed that there were no casualties but added that their investigation is stalled because the LP2B insitute is not being cooperative about providing information. According to information gathered in the field, at about 0:30 on Satruday morning someone threw a molotov
cocktail at the campus that is located on Jalan Kebo Iwa, Gianyar. The bumper of a Honda Jazz car, license plate number DK 1975 KV caught fire as a result. Material losses to the owner are estimated at about IDR 1 million. The fire attracted the attention of nearby residents and after about 15 minutes, the flames were extinguished with buckets of water. Not long after the fire was put out, officer from the Gianyar subdis-
trict police and the Gianyar Police arrived at the scene and found a broken green beer bottle with the remains of a kerosene soaked cloth in it (smell of kerosene). Chief of the Gianyar Subdistrict Police, Adana Pandibu, confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident. “It happened early this morning and we have already investigated the scene of the crime. There were no fatalities though the

According to Chief of the South Denpasar Police, Aris Purwanto, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation, Bangkit Dananjaya, on Sunday (Dec. 4), the mugging victim, Moh. Satin, 29, a project worker, was mugged on Wednesday (Jul. 27) at 3 pm. When reporting the case, the victim from Jember, East Java, said that at he had been lying on his motocycle by the seaside, playign with his iphone while enjoying the breeze away form his home on Jalan Pendidikan Gang Bunga Denpasar. Suddenly two unknown men came who appeared to be from NTT approached him under the pretense of asking about their female friend. Then one of them jumped off his motocycle and struck the victim and grabbed his bag. “Feeling threatened the victim fled the scene whle shouting for help, leaving his motocycle engine running” said Bangkit. The culprits rode off on the victim’s Yamaha Mio and the victim immediately reported the case to the South Denpasar Police station. “Based on the victim’s report, we conducted an investigation. We showed pictures of motorcycle theft recidivists and the victim pointed to one of the photos of the suspect Nggada as the perpetrator,” he said. The police then hunted for the suspects. After having been released form prison for another case, the suspect had been living nomadically. Last Friday, his residence was traced to the Bahari boarding house in Benoa Harbor . He was arrested at 13:30 without any resistance. He admitted to the officers that he had commited this crime along with his friend with the iitals E.“So far, we still searching for the suspect E”, said Bangkit. The suspect later admitted to having stolen a motorbike on Jalan Tukad Banyu Poh, South Denpasar on Saturday (Oct. 15). The victim was a student named Balla Suyono Hamanai, 27. The suspect took action at 2 am in the courtyard of a boarding house where the key was left in the motorcycle. The Yamaha Jupiter motorcycle was easily taken away by the suspect who continued using it daily after having changed the license plate with a fake one. “We once arrested this suspect in August 2015 related to motorcycle theft case. He was then released, but the suspect took action again. We are still developing this case, while the evidence of this mugging case namely the Yamaha Mio is still being looked for” said the officer. Drug lord arrested, Hundreds of ecstasy and crystal meth secured DENPASAR - The Denpasar Police Narcotic Unit arrested a drug lord with the initial SA while he was making a transaction in front of an international school on Jalan Badak Agung, Denpasar, on Friday (Dec. 2). His boarding house on Jalan Jayagiri XII, East Denpasar, was then searched and police secured evidence that consisted of 120 ecstasy pills and 108.07 grams of crystal meth. “This suspect has long become the target of our investigative operations. The person is slick and hard to catch”, said a source in
the Denpasar Police on Sunday (Dec. 4). Chief of the Denpasar Police Narcotic Unit, Gede Ganefo, devised a strategy to catch the suspect in the act. Provoking him to make a transaction is not easy, he said adding that police have tried several times. “Finally, they succeeded in catching the suspect in the act of making an illegal transaction on Jalan Badak Agung, not far from his place of residence”, sai da source who requested anonymity. On Friday at 6 pm, the suspect came to

California loft fire’s toll rises to 33, with more victims expected
OAKLAND - A fire that devastated an Oakland, California, loft building during a weekend dance party has taken at least 33 lives and the toll will likely rise, authorities said on Sunday, as criminal investigators joined recovery teams at the charred ruin. Firefighters in Oakland, east of San Francisco, found the remains of nearly three dozen victims as they sifted through the debris-filled shell of the two-story converted warehouse being used by an artists’ collective. The cause of the fire was still undetermined, officials said. Arson is not suspected but investigators want to find out if the building, often used for musical performances, had a history of code violations. Mayor Libby Schaaf said the Alameda County District Attor-
ney’s Office activated its criminal investigation team at the fire scene. A representative of the prosecutor’s office is monitoring the recovery process, she said, adding she was not authorized to say if a criminal probe was under way. TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Monday he would visit Hawaii on Dec. 26 and 27 for his final summit meeting with outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama, and to remember the victims of Japan’s Pearl Harbor attack 75 years ago. Abe will be the first incumbent Japanese Prime Minister to visit Pearl Harbor after Tokyo launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base in December 1941. His visit follows a landmark trip to Hiroshima in May by Obama, the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Japanese city devastated by a U.S. nuclear attack in 1945. “I’ll visit Pearl Harbor with President Obama. This will be a visit to console the souls of the victims,” Abe told reporters. “I would like to show to the world the resolve that horrors of war should never be repeated.” The attack on the naval base by Japanese torpedo planes, bombers and fighter planes drew the United States into World War Two when it declared war on Japan, while the U.S. nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Japan to surrender. Italy firms as investors bet against immediate snap election
LONDON - Italian shares rose on Monday as investors bet against an immediate snap election in Italy following Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s resignation after defeat in a constitutional reform referendum. Markets had been jolted by the scale of Renzi’s defeat which pointed to further turbulence and political crisis in the euro zone’s heavily indebted third-largest economy and particular uncertainty was focussed on the country’s fragile banks. The euro fell as low as $1.0508 and the Milan bourse shed as much as 2 percent at the opening, while Italian bond yields spiked sharply higher. But most of these moves quickly reversed. The euro roared back above $1.06, still down on the day, Italian stocks moved higher, and Germany’s DAX and Europe’s FTSEuroFirst index of leading 300 shares both rose 1.5 percent. U.S. futures pointed to a rise of about 0.5 percent at the open on Wall Street. “Our base scenario is a caretaker government which could be in place before Christmas, and no new elections before 2018,” Indosuez Wealth Management chief econo-
mist Marie Owens Thomsen said. “If indeed things pan out according to our base scenario, there would be little reason for any broad-based turmoil. It is still utterly unlikely that Italy would leave the EU or the euro,” she said. The referendum outcome was anticipated but the margin of Renzi’s defeat - 59 percent to 41 percent - caused the initial alarm. Analysts say it could still deal a body blow to a bloc already reeling under anti-establishment anger that led to Britain’s shock exit in June. Italian financials rose 0.5 percent having fallen more than 4 percent, and shares in the world’s oldest bank, Monte dei Paschi, were flat on the day after being suspended at the openung. Bonds remained under pressure though. Italy’s benchmark 10-year bond yield jumped 11 basis points (bps) to 2.01 percent, widening the premium investors demand for
holding Italian bonds over safer German bonds to 175 bps, before easing slightly. The strong link between Italy’s banking sector and bond market is a major concern for investors. Banks have been hit by concerns over their huge exposure to bad loans built up during years of economic downturn. They also hold large amounts of Italian government debt. “Bond market turbulence could have serious implications for the financial system. Foreign investors may be less willing to underwrite capital raisings of Italian lenders,” JP Morgan Asset Management global market strategist Maria Paola Toschi said.

JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said about 900 pilots are still unemployed in Indonesia and pose a specific challenge to the government. “We have two challenges, namely competition and unemployed pilots. Competition is no longer among regions only but also among countries globally. In the educational sector, we have a big problem where a total of 900 pilots remain unemployed,”
Budi said after launching a Campaign on Flight Safety here on Sunday. He said the solution that has been offered is the improvement of pilot quality by organizing training and increase skills. The minister said there are many pilots which are not accepted by the company because many of them yet to have the qualified skill. “If we provide them with compensation and additional skills, they can be recruited and accepted
as pilots because they really are needed,” the minister said. Pilots should also follow the process through flying small planes such as Cessna Caravan or ATR before they fly wide boy planes. “I believe there are many pilots who are not employed because they failed to past the test. The bodies, he said, were assumed to be drowned after the plane crashed and exploded. “Until yesterday, debris of the plane were still seen in the water surface near the crash site. YOGYAKARTA - Around 2,500 villages in Indonesia have no access to electricity for being isolated and located in difficult terrain. “The villages are located in difficult terrain and isolated,” chairman of the Indonesian association of private electric producers (APLSI) Arthur Simatupang said here on Sunday. Arthur said the government could not rely only on the state power utility company PLN to supply electricity for the 2,500 villages mostly in frontier areas. The role of the private sector is important, he said, adding PLN has to team up with independent power producers (IPP). He said the government has issued a regulation allowing the private sector to operate in the power generating industry in order to give the 2,5000 villages access to electricity. The regulation calls for the involvement of the private sector, cooperatives and regional administration companies (BUMD) to provide electricity for the villages, he said. “The government would provide the license for the private sector to build power plants, power transmission networks and sell power directly to the end consumers in
isolated areas,” he said. So far only PLN is allowed to sell power to the end consumers. Independent power producers sell their power to the end consumers via PLN . With the new regulation PLN no longer holds the monopoly to sell power to the public in isolated areas. “We hope the new regulation would attract more investors to build power plants that would help open access to electricity for the 2,500 villages,” Arthur said. Earlier, director of electric power program development at the energy and mineral resources (ESDM) ministry Alihuddin Sitompul said his office has prepared a ministerial regulation on mini power plants and was already signed by ESDM Minister Ignatius Jonan. “Currently it is being processed at the Law and Human Right Ministry ,” Alihuddin said.(ant)

Italy’s Renzi to resign after referendum rout
ROME - Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is set to resign on Monday after suffering a crushing defeat on Sunday in a referendum on constitutional reform, tipping the euro zone’s third-largest economy into political turmoil. His decision to quit after just two and a half years in office deals a blow to the European Union, already reeling from multiple crises and struggling to overcome antiestablishment forces that have battered the Western world this year. The euro briefly tumbled overnight to 20-month lows against the dollar, as markets worried that instability could reignite an EU debt crisis and deal a hammer blow to Italy’s fragile banking sector, especially the troubled Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. However, by early in the European morning it had largely rebounded. Monte Paschi shares were suspended, initially falling 7 percent before bouncing back to a 1-percent decline. Yields on Italy’s benchmark 10-year bond soared to more than 2 percent, but then also retreated back below that mark. May’s Brexit plans face British Supreme Court test LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May’s government launches a challenge on Monday against a court ruling that it requires parliamentary approval to start the process of leaving the European Union, a decision that could upset Britain’s Brexit plans. If the Supreme Court, the United Kingdom’s highest judicial body, dismisses the government appeal it could derail May’s timetable for triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and leaving the EU. The government’s legal fight comes against a backdrop of claims by some politicians and newspapers that establishment judges want to thwart the Brexit process. It will be the most high-profile and complex case the court has considered since it came into being seven years ago and is due to last for four days. For the first time all its 11 justices will sit on the panel with the verdict due later in January. “The case raises difficult and delicate issues about the constitutional relationship between government and parliament,” Brenda Hale, the Supreme Court’s Vice-President said in a speech last month.
“What is meant by the exercise of the executive power of the state? We do not have a written constitution to tell us the answer. But I doubt whether many written constitutions would tell us the answer either.” If May wins, she can proceed with her plans to invoke Article 50 by the end of March. But if she loses, parliament could in theory block Brexit as most lawmakers (MPs) supported staying in the EU in a referendum in June, though few observers expect such an outcome. In the wake of team mate Nico Rosberg’s dramatic retirement five days after winning the title, the Austrian recognised the situation had changed. “There is no need to say anything to Lewis,” he told the Mail on Sunday. “We have no problem about how he raced in Abu Dhabi. MILAN - AS Roma pounced on two dreadful Lazio mistakes to claim a 2-0 Serie A victory in a hot-tempered derby boycotted by their own supporters on Sunday. Lazio’s Wallace gifted Roma the lead in the 64th minute when he tried to dribble his way out of defence but was dispossessed by Kevin Strootman who chipped the ball over helpless goalkeeper Federico Marchetti.
There was a scuffle involving players and officials from both teams after the goal, sparked when Strootman squirted water at Lazio substitute Danilo Cataldi who grabbed the Dutchman’s shirt by the collar. Strootman was booked and Cataldi shown a red card. Roma doubled their advantage in the 77th minute when Radja Nainggolan caught Marchetti napping with a low shot from 35 metres that bounced twice as it entered the net at his unguarded near post. In the wake of team mate Nico Rosberg’s dramatic retirement five days after winning the title, the Austrian recognised the situation had changed. “There is no need to say anything to Lewis,” he told the Mail on Sunday. “We have no problem about how he raced in Abu Dhabi. We have drawn a line under it.” Hamilton had ignored orders to speed up after he deliberately slowed the race while leading in an attempt to ‘back up’ Rosberg and give others a chance to overtake. The Briton could only win the title if Rosberg finished off the podium. In the end Hamilton won at Yas Marina for his 10th victory of the year but the German held on to finish second. Rosberg then stunned the sport by announcing his retirement on Friday, leaving champions Mercedes with a headache. Italy’s Renzi to resign after referendum rout
ROME - Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is set to resign on Monday after suffering a crushing defeat on Sunday in a referendum on constitutional reform, tipping the euro zone’s third-largest economy into political turmoil. His decision to quit after just two and a half years in office deals a blow to the European Union, already reeling from multiple crises and struggling to overcome antiestablishment forces that have battered the Western world this year. The euro briefly tumbled overnight to 20-month lows against the dollar, as markets worried that instability could reignite an EU debt crisis and deal a hammer blow to Italy’s fragile banking sector, especially the troubled Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. However, by early in the European morning it had largely rebounded. Monte Paschi shares were suspended, initially falling 7 percent before bouncing back to a 1-percent decline. Yields on Italy’s benchmark 10-year bond soared to more than 2 percent, but then also retreated back below that mark. May’s Brexit plans face British Supreme Court test LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May’s government launches a challenge on Monday against a court ruling that it requires parliamentary approval to start the process of leaving the European Union, a decision that could upset Britain’s Brexit plans. If the Supreme Court, the United Kingdom’s highest judicial body, dismisses the government appeal it could derail May’s timetable for triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and leaving the EU. The government’s legal fight comes against a backdrop of claims by some politicians and newspapers that establishment judges want to thwart the Brexit process. It will be the most high-profile and complex case the court has considered since it came into being seven years ago and is due to last for four days. For the first time all its 11 justices will sit on the panel with the verdict due later in January. “The case raises difficult and delicate issues about the constitutional relationship between government and parliament,” Brenda Hale, the Supreme Court’s Vice-President said in a speech last month.
“What is meant by the exercise of the executive power of the state? We do not have a written constitution to tell us the answer. But I doubt whether many written constitutions would tell us the answer either.” If May wins, she can proceed with her plans to invoke Article 50 by the end of March. But if she loses, parliament could in theory block Brexit as most lawmakers (MPs) supported staying in the EU in a referendum in June, though few observers expect such an outcome. Italy firms as investors bet against immediate snap election
LONDON - Italian shares rose on Monday as investors bet against an immediate snap election in Italy following Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s resignation after defeat in a constitutional reform referendum. Markets had been jolted by the scale of Renzi’s defeat which pointed to further turbulence and political crisis in the euro zone’s heavily indebted third-largest economy and particular uncertainty was focussed on the country’s fragile banks. The euro fell as low as $1.0508 and the Milan bourse shed as much as 2 percent at the opening, while Italian bond yields spiked sharply higher. But most of these moves quickly reversed. The euro roared back above $1.06, still down on the day, Italian stocks moved higher, and Germany’s DAX and Europe’s FTSEuroFirst index of leading 300 shares both rose 1.5 percent. U.S. futures pointed to a rise of about 0.5 percent at the open on Wall Street. “Our base scenario is a caretaker government which could be in place before Christmas, and no new elections before 2018,” Indosuez Wealth Management chief econo-
mist Marie Owens Thomsen said. “If indeed things pan out according to our base scenario, there would be little reason for any broad-based turmoil. It is still utterly unlikely that Italy would leave the EU or the euro,” she said. JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said about 900 pilots are still unemployed in Indonesia and pose a specific challenge to the government. “We have two challenges, namely competition and unemployed pilots. Competition is no longer among regions only but also among countries globally. In the educational sector, we have a big problem where a total of 900 pilots remain unemployed,”
Budi said after launching a Campaign on Flight Safety here on Sunday. He said the solution that has been offered is the improvement of pilot quality by organizing training and increase skills. The minister said there are many pilots which are not accepted by the company because many of them yet to have the qualified skill. “If we provide them with compensation and additional skills, they can be recruited and accepted
as pilots because they really are needed,” the minister said. Pilots should also follow the process through flying small planes such as Cessna Caravan or ATR before they fly wide boy planes. “I believe there are many pilots who are not employed because they failed to past the test. SAR mobilizes divers to find victims of crashed police plane BATAM - Search and Rescue Team on Sunday mobilized its divers to find victims of a police transport aircraft that went down in the waters off Pulau Lingga in southern Riau Islands. “Today a divers team is deployed to locate victims of yesterdays plane crash,” Riau Islands police chief, Brigadier General Sam Budgusdian said here, Sunday. The bodies, he said, were assumed to be drowned after the plane crashed and exploded. “Until yesterday, debris of the plane were still seen in the water surface near the crash site. YOGYAKARTA - Around 2,500 villages in Indonesia have no access to electricity for being isolated and located in difficult terrain. “The villages are located in difficult terrain and isolated,” chairman of the Indonesian association of private electric producers (APLSI) Arthur Simatupang said here on Sunday. Arthur said the government could not rely only on the state power utility company PLN to supply electricity for the 2,500 villages mostly in frontier areas. The role of the private sector is important, he said, adding PLN has to team up with independent power producers (IPP). He said the government has issued a regulation allowing the private sector to operate in the power generating industry in order to give the 2,5000 villages access to electricity. The regulation calls for the involvement of the private sector, cooperatives and regional administration companies (BUMD) to provide electricity for the villages, he said. “The government would provide the license for the private sector to build power plants, power transmission networks and sell power directly to the end consumers in
isolated areas,” he said. So far only PLN is allowed to sell power to the end consumers. Independent power producers sell their power to the end consumers via PLN . With the new regulation PLN no longer holds the monopoly to sell power to the public in isolated areas. “We hope the new regulation would attract more investors to build power plants that would help open access to electricity for the 2,500 villages,” Arthur said. Earlier, director of electric power program development at the energy and mineral resources (ESDM) ministry Alihuddin Sitompul said his office has prepared a ministerial regulation on mini power plants and was already signed by ESDM Minister Ignatius Jonan. “Currently it is being processed at the Law and Human Right Ministry ,” Alihuddin said.(ant)

When reporting the case, the victim from Jember, East Java, said that at he had been lying on his motocycle by the seaside, playign with his iphone while enjoying the breeze away form his home on Jalan Pendidikan Gang Bunga Denpasar. Suddenly two unknown men came who appeared to be from NTT approached him under the pretense of asking about their female friend. Then one of them jumped off his motocycle and struck the victim and grabbed his bag. “Feeling threatened the victim fled the scene whle shouting for help, leaving his motocycle engine running” said Bangkit. The culprits rode off on the victim’s Yamaha Mio and the victim immediately reported the case to the South Denpasar Police station. “Based on the victim’s report, we conducted an investigation. We showed pictures of motorcycle theft recidivists and the victim pointed to one of the photos of the suspect Nggada as the perpetrator,” he said. The police then hunted for the suspects. After having been released form prison for another case, the suspect had been living nomadically. Last Friday, his residence was traced to the Bahari boarding house in Benoa Harbor . He was arrested at 13:30 without any resistance. He admitted to the officers that he had commited this crime along with his friend with the iitals E.“So far, we still searching for the suspect E”, said Bangkit. The suspect later admitted to having stolen a motorbike on Jalan Tukad Banyu Poh, South Denpasar on Saturday (Oct. 15). The victim was a student named Balla Suyono Hamanai, 27. The suspect took action at 2 am in the courtyard of a boarding house where the key was left in the motorcycle. The Yamaha Jupiter motorcycle was easily taken away by the suspect who continued using it daily after having changed the license plate with a fake one. “We once arrested this suspect in August 2015 related to motorcycle theft case. He was then released, but the suspect took action again. We are still developing this case, while the evidence of this mugging case namely the Yamaha Mio is still being looked for” said the officer. In addition, the Kalibukbuk authorities responded positively to the creation of the ocean park rides in the region. “If we build up tourism in Buleleng, there should be no discrimination. We have ideas and they should be mutually supported by all parties. We have all our permits in order. We do not sell the same product as The Lovina Bali – we offer water sports at sea. Drug lord arrested, Hundreds of ecstasy and crystal meth secured DENPASAR - The Denpasar Police Narcotic Unit arrested a drug lord with the initial SA while he was making a transaction in front of an international school on Jalan Badak Agung, Denpasar, on Friday (Dec. 2). His boarding house on Jalan Jayagiri XII, East Denpasar, was then searched and police secured evidence that consisted of 120 ecstasy pills and 108.07 grams of crystal meth. “This suspect has long become the target of our investigative operations. the Denpasar Police on Sunday (Dec. 4). Chief of the Denpasar Police Narcotic Unit, Gede Ganefo, devised a strategy to catch the suspect in the act. Provoking him to make a transaction is not easy, he said adding that police have tried several times. “Finally, they succeeded in catching the suspect in the act of making an illegal transaction on Jalan Badak Agung, not far from his place of residence”, sai da source who requested anonymity. On Friday at 6 pm, the suspect came to

California loft fire’s toll rises to 33, with more victims expected
OAKLAND - A fire that devastated an Oakland, California, loft building during a weekend dance party has taken at least 33 lives and the toll will likely rise, authorities said on Sunday, as criminal investigators joined recovery teams at the charred ruin. Firefighters in Oakland, east of San Francisco, found the remains of nearly three dozen victims as they sifted through the debris-filled shell of the two-story converted warehouse being used by an artists’ collective. The cause of the fire was still undetermined, officials said. Arson is not suspected but investigators want to find out if the building, often used for musical performances, had a history of code violations. Mayor Libby Schaaf said the Alameda County District Attor-
ney’s Office activated its criminal investigation team at the fire scene. TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Monday he would visit Hawaii on Dec. 26 and 27 for his final summit meeting with outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama, and to remember the victims of Japan’s Pearl Harbor attack 75 years ago. Abe will be the first incumbent Japanese Prime Minister to visit Pearl Harbor after Tokyo launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base in December 1941. Repairs were ongoign until evening and it was not until Thursday night (Dec 1) at around 9PM that trucks
were able to start crossing again. Thursday (Dec. 1) because at the same time a repair was being made at the Lembar Pier. “Lembar’s pier 1 was damaged but pier 2 and an emmergency pioer were still operating. The emmergency pier can only accommodate large sized vessels”, he added.
It was not until Friday (Dec. 2), that the queue of trucks in Padangbai Harbour and Lembar Hrbour started to clear up. Many truck divers were disspointed by the wait because it meant that they had to spend more money as they waited to delivers goods to Lombok. A driver from Bima named Amirudin, complained saying that this happens all the time and becomes an even worse problem when drivers in Padangbai are not
given notice and are forced to sit in the parking lot for not apparent reason. “We are given a very small allowance for our meals, so when we are trapped in congestion for days, it makes things very hard on us”,he said. This situation aggrieves drivers at Padangbai Harbour both in terms of cost and travel time.. know we’ve got a lot of habitat here. All we were missing were the fishers.” Fishers historically were found throughout much of the forested areas of the West Coast. But they declined in numbers due to trapping in the 1800s and early 1900s, and the loss of forest habitats. By the mid-1900s they were eliminated from Washington state. The solitary animal, which hunts snowshoe hares, rodents and small mammals, were listed as state endangered species in 1998. They’re one of the few predators of porcupines and are found only in North America. While common in the Northeast and Midwest, they’re rare in the Northwest. Population estimates of West Coast fishers today are anywhere from a couple hundred to a few thousand, mostly in southern Oregon and Northern California. More recently, West Coast fishers have faced threats from illegal pesticide use by marijuana growers and other threats. But they’re slowly making a comeback in Washington through reintroduction efforts involving WDFW, Conservation Northwest, the National Park Service and other partners. “These animals were here before us and so it’s our duty to take
care of them,” Hanford McCloud, a Nisqually Indian Tribe council member, said during a ceremony before the fishers were released on park land designated for the tribe’s use. Several First Nations people traveled with the fishers, some that were captured First Nations land in British Columbia. The first fishers, about 90 in all, were reintroduced in Washington state in Olympic National Park starting in 2008. Those animals are reproducing and expanding its geographic range. The second phase of the project involves relocating fishers from British Columbia into the southwest Cascade Mountains and later into the North Cascades. The goal is to reintroduce 80 fishers to each region. “We feel like we’re making headway and we’re getting good positive results. It’s too early to say that we’re establishing a selfsustaining population but it sure is looking positive,” said Lewis. The recovery efforts, however, comes as conservation groups have sued the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, alleging the federal agency failed to consider the best scientific evidence when it decided not to provide the fisher protections under the Endangered Species Act. Supreme Court strengthens verdict of District Court
Margriet still sentenced to life, Agustay ten years DENPASAR — The effort to be free from the bondage of law attempted by Margriet CH Megawe over the case of Engeline murder with the legal attempt of cassation did not produce results. The judges of Supreme Court rejected the appeal filed by the convicted person and this precisely upheld the verdict of district court and high court. With the verdict, Margriet remains to be sentenced to life.
Similar verdict is also received by Agustay Hamda May. Supreme Court’s judges rejected the cassation and he was sentenced for 10 years in prison. The verdict was received by Denpasar District Court’s judges prosecuting the case since the beginning. In the meantime, legal counsel of Agustay, Haposan Sihombing, when confirmed on Friday (Dec. 2) also admitted the verdict of the Supreme Court.
He will immediately inform it to Agustay. “Yes, I have received a copy of the cassation verdict of the Supreme Court from the Denpasar District Court. We will immediately notify Agustay and later we return it to our client how his response will look like,” said Haposan. The verdict was actually decided on October 26, 2016 to convict Agustay. The judge examining the
appeal file was chaired by Dr. H. Andi Samsan Nganro together with the members consisting of H Eddy Army and Dr. H. Margono. It is the verdict of these judges rejecting the applicant’s appeal of first cassation (prosecutor) and rejected the appeal by the second applicant (Agustay Handa May). Haposan Sihombing said that he will not seek judicial review because there is no new evidence or facts.
As for the convict Margriet in the verdict of the Supreme Court, with the same date and judge, declared to reject the appeal filed by her legal counsel team from the Hotman Sitompoel Associates. There has been no official statement from the Margriet related to the verdict of the Supreme Court related to the murder case of Engeline on Jalan Sedap Malam, Denpasar. (kmb37)

Chief of the Gianyar Subdistrict Police, Adana Pandibu, confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident. “It happened early this morning and we have already investigated the scene of the crime. There were no fatalities though the

Gianyar - There is sure to be an increase in tourists visiting Bali throughout December 2016 as Christmas and New Year are what is known as high season. A number of tourist attraction on the island remain popular, including Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, Gianyar A.A. Dalem Jagadhita, explained that the fluctuation in the number of tourists who visit Gianyar, will most likely show an tend towards increase in December. “We have already noticed that tourists

We are therefor conducting a study to see how we can increase the number of
people who visit this attractino”, he explained. Based on data from the Gianyar Tourism Office, there were a total of 1,225, 377 foreign (849,756) and domestic (375,621) tourists who visied tourist attractions that are managed by the government of Gianyar as well as those that are privately managed, including customary villages. “The Gianyar Tourism Office records 19 tourist attractions in the region.” he said. BANGLI - The number of tourist crossing Lake Batur to visite Trunyan village cemetery in Kintamani has decreased in the last few weeks as heavy rains have been pouring down throughout Bangli and surrounding areas. The treasurer of a rowboat group from Terunyan village named Made Sujarah, acknowledged that since the rainy season started, the number of tourists renting paddle boats to cross to Terunyan cemetery has decreased slightly. We now only charted about 2 or three boats a day. “This Sunday, five boats made the corssing”, he said on Sunday (Dec4). When the weather is good, about 10 to 15 boats bring tourist to Trunyan village everyday. Each boat carres between 2 and 6 passengers. There are more domestic than foregin tourists who take the boats to visit Trunyan cemetary. “During school holidays and feast days, the number of visitors increases”, he explained. Sujarah mentioned that the tariff for crossing by rowboat is cheaper than by bigger boats. Two domestic tourists are charged about IDR 280,000 per rowboat. “The advantage of using rowboat to cross is that travelers can enjoy the scenery with ease”, he said. Trunyan cemetary is widely known to travelers because of the unique way that they leave the dead on the ground without burying them. ‘Moana’ Tops Slow PostThanksgiving Weekend With $28.4 Million
LOS ANGELES - “Moana” sailed to the top of the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. The Disney animated adventure picked up $28.4 million to push its stateside haul to $119.9 million. Not that “Moana” faced much in the way of competition. The weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be a slow one for the movie business and this year’s edition was in keeping with that tradition. The only major new release, “Incarnate,” failed to sell many tickets, earning $2.6 million and falling short of its expected $4 million to $5 million opening. “Incarnate” centers on a scientist (Aaron Eckhart) who enters the mind of an 11-year-old boy to rid him of an evil spirit. The horror film is the latest offering from BH Tilt, which is trying to contain distribution costs by orchestrating more targeted marketing campaigns for certain theatrical releases. “Incarnate” used digital advertising to try to better reach younger horror fans, and debuted on 1,700 screens, substantially fewer theaters than most studio movies unfurl across. It cost $5 million to produce. “Believe,” a faith-based drama about a Christmas pageant, grossed a quiet $602,519 from 639 locations. Freestyle Releasing backed the film.

Thousands protest corruption, support judiciary in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO - Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in cities across Brazil on Sunday to express disgust with public corruption and outrage at what they say are lawmakers’ attempts to muzzle the judges and prosecutors pursuing those crimes. Protesters, many dressed in the green and yellow of Brazil’s flag, massed along a major artery in Sao Paulo and along Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. Other protests were held in cities around the country. Many demonstrators wore T-shirts or held banners in support of Sergio Moro, the judge who has led a hard-charging investigation into a kickback scheme involving the national oil company, several
construction conglomerates and politicians. The investigation, known as Operation Car Wash, has shocked Brazilians both for the scale of corruption it has revealed and for the commitment of the judiciary to see it through in a country where many feel the rich and powerful act with impunity. But Sunday’s demonstrations also united a motley group of protesters
whose only common cause appeared to be disgust with elected officials. They represented a cross-section of an increasingly fractured Brazil. In addition to those supporting the corruption investigation, some held signs calling for the removal from office of the president and leaders in Congress. Some called for the jailing of a former president now facing corruption charges. Still others were advocating a return to military rule. “I want people who have character running the country,” said Regina Medeiros, a 67-year-old retiree, who held a banner that read: “Let’s finish with political parties
before they finish Brazil.” ‘’People are losing faith in other human beings,” she added. Around 15,000 people protested in Sao Paulo, according to an estimate from military police; they said they did not have a number for demonstrations in Rio de Janeiro. At least another 40,000 people came out in scores of other cities around Brazil, including the capital of Brasilia, according to estimates from military police published by the G1 news portal. Many hoped that after former President Dilma Rousseff was impeached and removed from office earlier this year, Brazilian politics
would settle, and reforms proposed by the new president might pull the economy out of deep recession. But instead, those reforms have met with significant protests, President Michel Temer has seen his popularity plummet, and the economic crisis appears to be worsening.
