‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ rocks box offices, if not critics LOS ANGELES - Proving again that audiences matter more than critics, Fox’s Freddy Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” rocked North American box offices this weekend with a solid $50 million take, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

The film’s unexpectedly strong launch put it well ahead of Disney’s new “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” at $20 million, and “Paramount’s “Nobody’s Fool,” with $14 million in estimated ticket sales for the three-day weekend.

“Rhapsody,” with EgyptianAmerican actor Rami Malek starring as the charismatic Mercury, thus logged one of the best openings ever for a music biopic.

The movie has received decidedly mixed reviews, however. Vox. com dismissed it “a crashingly dull movie about ... one of the least drab humans who ever lived,” while the Washington Post called it a “bad movie that works, even when it shouldn’t.” But Malek, a Primetime Emmy winner for his role in TV’s “Mr. Robot,” has won mostly high praise.

While Fox essentially paid the $50 million production cost of “Rhapsody” with the film’s opening-weekend take, Disney was not faring as well with “Nutcracker,” which cost $125 million to make.

The studio hopes the classic Christmas tale will hold on through the holidays, Variety said.

But like “Rhapsody,” the Keira Knightley film got some less-thanglowing reviews. “Tchaikovsky,” said Rolling Stone, “is rolling in his grave.”

Nor did “Nobody’s Fool,” Tyler Perry’s first R-rated comedy, do much better on the critic’s couch, with HollywoodReporter.com deploring its “clumsy, misshapen script.” It stars the popular Tiffany Haddish as a newly paroled woman who tries to help her sister get revenge on a man who deceived her.

In fourth place, Warner Bros.’s “A Star Is Born” earned a solid $11.1 million in its fifth week out.

“This year has been the best of my life,” the 21-year-old Cuban native said at the event in Bilbao, northern Spain. Cabello had opened the show hosted by American actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld with a rendition of her Latin-influenced “Havana”.

She is fresh from winning prestigious prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards in August -- artist of the year and video of the year -- after her album “Camila” reached the top of US charts in January.

The audio version of “Havana”, which features rapper Young Thug, has had more than 1.3 billion hits on YouTube. The former member of the band Fifth Harmony was also named best pop artist at last year’s

MTV Europe Music Awards.

Cabello had six nominations, followed by five each for singer Ariana Grande and rapper Post Malone and Canadian artist Drake and Britain’s Dua Lipa with four.

With two awards -- for best hip hop artist and best look -- US rapper Nicki Minaj held her own, making two appearances on stage, with French DJ David Guetta and US singer Jason Derulo.

Dua Lipa won best pop artist, while the US group Panic! at the Disco won best alternative artist and Marshmello snagged best electro artist. Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, winner of three prizes in 2017, won best live artist.

US veteran Janet Jackson was crowned a “global icon”, a title previously awarded to U2, Queen, Whitney Houston and Eminem.

Accepting the award, she addressed abused women, saying: “I am one of those women, women who have been gagged both literally and emotionally, women who have been abused, women who have been intimidated, women who have lived in fear.”

She added: “I stand with you.

You are my sisters.”

Here’s what we know about the crash and its aftermath: The plane: The Max 8 aircraft was the most recent model in Boeing’s storied 737 family, which is the Chicago-based company’s best-selling plane and a workhorse for the growing ranks of budget airlines. It had clocked about 800 flight hours since it was delivered to Lion Air in August.

Losing contact: Lion Air Flight JT610, on its way to Pangkalpinang, a popular tourist destination a little more than an hour away, lost contact at about 6:33 a.m., 13 minutes after take-off. A little later, authorities confirmed the plane crashed 15 miles from Jakarta’s airport, with 189 people onboard, including its crew. That was 737 Max’s first hull loss, an industry term for an aircraft damaged beyond the point of repair.

Request to return: The Transport Ministry said that the crew requested a return-to-base before disappearing from the radar. It is unclear what the reason was, if at all it was relayed to air

traffic controllers. The captain had completed 6,000 flight hours and the co-pilot had 5,000, according to Lion Air. Prior flight: The night before the accident, pilots flying the same plane from Denpasar, Bali, to Jakarta experienced problems with the sensors used to calculate altitude and speed, an issue that could potentially hold the key to solving the mystery. The instruments were checked by maintenance workers overnight and the plane was cleared to fly, according to Lion Air. Lion Air: Closely held PT Lion Mentari Airlines is owned by Rusdi Kirana, an Indonesian politician, businessman and a former member of President Joko Widodo’s advisory board.

Kirana was also a member of the National Awakening Party, a part of Widodo’s ruling coalition. The budget carrier started operations in 2000 and is among the major customers for Boeing and Airbus SE in Asia. In February 2012, Lion Air placed an

order for 201 of the 737 Max planes and 29 of the extended range 737-900 aircraft in a $22.4 billion deal valued at list price. In 18 years of service, the carrier has suffered seven hull losses.

Suspensions and checks: Following the crash, Indonesia stepped up inspections of aircraft in service and said it would ground those with technical snags that can’t be fixed. Inspectors found two Max 8 planes operated by Lion Air with defects during ramp checks, which have now been rectified. The transport ministry also ordered the suspension of managers in charge of maintenance, engineering, quality control and the engineer who cleared the ill-fated plane for take-off.

Search for wreckage: After scouring shallow waters for days, divers have managed to retrieve only a flight data recorder and it appears damaged from the crash. They are still searching for the cockpit voice recorder. The black boxes, as they are known, are crucial to unraveling

what happened during the final moments of the plane. The search teams have also been fishing out aircraft pieces, body parts of victims and their personal belongings.

Divers also recovered an engine and part of the landing gear of the jet.

Investigation: It may be weeks or months before final details of the cause of the crash are shared by the investigators. Officials from the U.S. National Transport Safety Board, Boeing, General Electric Co. and the Federal Aviation Administration have joined the investigation. The 737 Max 8 is powered by engines made by CFM International, a joint venture between GE and Safran SA. Widening Search: The search teams may be close to finding the plane’s main wreckage and cockpit voice recorder on Saturday, according to the national search agency. Searchers plan to sweep a larger area for the fuselage and the black box, using ROVs, 56 vessels and more than 800 personnel.

Airport authority: Lion Air JT-610 has no disruption at Ngurah Rai Airport

MANGUPURA - Regarding the Lion Air JT-610 of Jakarta-Pangkal Pinang’s aircraft accident previously said to depart from Ngurah Rai Airport, the authority of Ngurah Rai Airport affirmed that based on evaluation results of Lion Air data from Ngurah Rai Airport the aircraft did not have disruption. He revealed the results of evaluation by the inspectorate team of the airport authority declared that everything was normal. Every aircraft having just arrived was indeed evaluated. According to him, for evaluations, there are daily, weekly, monthly and annual evaluations.

“This is an overall check for flight

safety so that it is safe and comfortable. Regular checks have been carried out by airport authority.

Moreover, such checking was also made to the health of the crews,” he explained.

Father of World’s Ergonomics passes away

DENPASAR - The Father of World’s Ergonomics, Prof. I.B. Adnyana Manuaba, passed away on Sunday (Nov. 4) at 02:00. The deceased died at Prima Medika Hospital at the age of 83 years. He died because of disease complications, namely prostate cancer and diabetes.

This was revealed by the deceased’s first daughter I.A. Sri Astuty Rianawaty when met at the funeral home on Jalan Serma Gede, Denpasar.

Her father had been ill since 2010 and got surgery for prostate cancer. The result was quite good at that time. Until the eighth year, precisely on October 16 the deceased’s hemoglobin suddenly dropped. Then, he was rushed to hospital. Previously, the deceased’s leg also had a wound, but was quickly cleared.

During his lifetime, the deceased gave a lot of moral education to her.

The values remaining to get embedded are discipline, simplicity and hard work. His children were educated not to take advantage of his great reputation to get convenience. Besides, his children were taught to be independent and reach for everything with their own hard work.

Prof. Adnyana Manuaba was the first lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the Udayana University in 1962, when it was newly established. In 1964, the deceased became Chairperson of the Inter-Scholar Conference in Bali and outside Bali. Together with scholars, he discussed about the ideas of Bali’s development, so that a visionary figure was attached to him. When Bali Post was named Suluh Marhaen, the deceased routinely wrote for the rubric of the Banjar Hall. Even though he was educated in the Netherlands, the deceased continued to write.

The deceased also served as Section Head at the Faculty of Medicine of the Udayana University. One of his assistants is Prof. Alex Pangkahila. “All students and assistants are becoming successful figures. He inspired and motivated everyone to excel,” said the son-in-law of the

deceased, Rudynald Baihaqi.

Rudy added the deceased was very active. Even though he was in a wheelchair, the deceased was still actively teaching, testing theses, and fostering Bina Vokalia Bali, a music group pioneered by the deceased and his wife where he served as the advisor.

The deceased was known as the Father of World’s Ergonomics so he had many friends from various countries. He was frequently invited as speaker about ergonomics. “Ergonomics figure at such level is only him alone, while the others are his students,” said Rudy. Beyond medicine, the deceased also pioneered tourism.

When the public hasn’t realized tourism as a field of science, that’s where the deceased pioneered tourism.

Chairman of the Indonesian Public Health Expert Association (IAKMI) of Bali Chapter, Made Kerta Duana, stated the deceased was a lecturer at the doctoral program. Even though he was on a wheelchair, the deceased continued to actively teach and share his knowledge. His loyalty to science need not be doubted.

The deceased can be said to be the figure of the world’s ergonomics in the field of health. “This is his specialty, seeing ergonomics in terms of health,” he added.

Ergonomics is a rare science, even at the international level. The deceased developed the science of ergonomics into a science that arrived in Southeast Asia. So, the deceased was called the Father of World’s Ergonomics. Ergonomics in the field of health then became a reference to other ergonomics such as industrial ergonomics because the deceased also studied ergonomic physiology (work physiology).

The deceased left a wife named Mariana Dorotea Amelia Manuaba with two sons and 3 daughters and grandchildren. As scheduled, the deceased will be taken to funeral home at Griya Simpangan, Blahkiuh, Badung, on Monday (Nov. 5). (kmb42)

Malaysia is ground zero for the next malaria menace

Vinita Surukan knew the mosquitoes were trouble. They attacked her in swarms, biting through her clothes as she worked to collect rubber tree sap near her village in Sabah, the northern state of Malaysia. The 30-year-old woman described the situation as nearly unbearable. But she needed the job.

There were few alternatives in her village surrounded by fragments of forest reserves and larger swaths of farms, oil palm plantations and rubber tree estates. So she endured until a week of high fever and vomiting forced her to stop.

The night of July 23, Surukan was trying to sleep off her fever when the clinic she visited earlier in the day called with results: Her blood was teeming with malaria parasites, about a million in each drop. Her family rushed her to the town hospital where she received intravenous antimalarial drugs before being transferred to a city hospital equipped to treat severe malaria. The drugs cleared most of the parasites, and the lucky woman was smiling by morning.

Malaria has terrorized humans for millennia, its fevers carved into our earliest writing on ancient Sumerian clay tablets from Mesopotamia. In 2016, four species of human malaria parasites, which are spread by mosquito from person to person, infected more than 210 million people worldwide, killing almost 450,000.

The deadliest species, Plasmodium falciparum, causes most of the infections.

But Surukan’s malaria was different. Hers was not a human malaria parasite. She had P. knowlesi, which infects several monkey species. The same parasite had

recently infected two other people in Surukan’s village — a man who hunts in the forest and a teenager. Surukan suspects that her parasites came from the monkeys that live in the forest bordering the rubber tree estate where she worked. Some villagers quit working there after hearing of Surukan’s illness.

Monkey malaria, discovered in the early 1900s, became a public health concern only in the last 15 years. Before that, scientists thought it was extremely rare for monkey malaria parasites, of which there are at least 30 species, to infect humans.

Yet since 2008, Malaysia has reported more than 15,000 cases of P. knowlesi infection and about 50 deaths. Infections in 2017 alone hit 3,600.

People infected with monkey malaria are found across Southeast Asia near forests with wild monkeys.

In 2017, another species of monkey malaria parasite, P. cynomolgi, was found in five Malaysians and 13 Cambodians. And by 2018, at least 19 travelers to the region, mostly Europeans, had brought monkey malaria back to their home countries.

The rise of monkey malaria in Malaysia is closely tied to rapid deforestation, says Kimberly Fornace, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. After testing blood samples of nearly 2,000 people from areas in Sabah with various levels of deforestation, she found that people staying or working near cut forests were more likely than people living away from forests to have P. knowlesi infections, she and colleagues reported in June in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Stepping over felled trees, humans move closer to the monkeys and the parasite-carrying mosquitoes that thrive in cleared forests. (IBP/net)

People and animals feed their microbes with nitrogen-containing mucus, a new study in mice suggests. The amount of nitrogen in the mucus is determined by how much protein the host eats.

Eating less protein may help curb gut bacteria’s growth

Humans and other animals may have a way to control the growth of gut microbes: Eat less protein.

That’s because protein contains nitrogen. And, it turns out, the amount of nitrogen in the diet of mice governed the growth of bacteria in the animals’ large intestine, researchers report October 29 in Nature Microbiology.

The finding may help researchers learn how to manipulate the types and amounts of people’s gut bacteria, which can contribute to health and disease.

Researchers know that something must limit bacterial growth. “If not, we’d be a few feet deep in E. coli in a couple of days,” says Thomas Schmidt, a microbiologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor not involved in the study.

But so far, scientists have had limited success controlling which microbes inhabit the colon. That may be because researchers were looking at the wrong nutrients, Schmidt says.

Most, including Schmidt, have usually considered carbon — found in fiber, starch and sugars, for example — to be the most important nutrient microbes eat, he says. The new study suggests that other nutrients such as nitrogen may be as important, or even more important, for controlling bacterial growth.

Microbial ecologist Aspen Reese of Duke University knew that in most ecosystems, nitrogen, an essential building block of many biological molecules, is a limited resource.

“Nitrogen is pretty important and it’s pretty hard to come by,” she says.

If the growth of organisms in other ecosystems is limited by the availability of nitrogen, perhaps bacteria in the intestines are also starving for nitrogen, she reasoned.

Reese, currently at Harvard University, and her colleagues started by measuring carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the feces of 30 mammalian species. Herbivores had the highest carbon levels and the lowest nitrogen levels in their feces, the team found. Carbon was also the major nutrient in the feces of carnivores and omnivores, but the meat eaters had more nitrogen than those animals that ate mostly plants.

Still, none of the animals’ poop contained as much nitrogen as labgrown bacteria did, indicating that the

microbes can use more nitrogen when they have it. Since gut bacteria incorporate far more carbon than nitrogen, it means the microbes aren’t getting much nitrogen, which could hold back their growth.

Reese’s team also lowered the amount of protein, thereby decreasing nitrogen, in the diets of lab mice. That reduced the numbers of bacteria in the rodents’ feces, the researchers found.

Together, these results suggest that levels of nitrogen in the gut help determine bacterial growth. It’s unclear whether having more or less bacteria is good or bad, but when certain types of microbes take over, it’s generally bad for health.

To track what happens to nitrogen in food, Reese and her colleagues went a step further, and fed mice chow in which the nitrogen was 15N, a heavier version of the element. The mice absorbed much of the nitrogen in their small intestines where bacteria usually don’t live, leaving little for the bacteria in the colon to eat.

A separate set of experiments revealed how bacteria were getting nitrogen if not directly from food.

Some bacteria in the gut (particularly ones belonging to the Bacteroidetes phylum) ate mucus secreted by the mice’s intestines to get nitrogen. In turn, those bacteria converted the mucus into other nitrogen-containing chemicals other gut bacteria could eat.

The result suggests that hosts may be able to control which microbes grow in the gut by regulating the amount of nitrogen in mucus. Eating foods with low protein content is one way to do that.

What’s more, antibiotics that lowered the amount of bacteria in the gut led mice to secrete less mucus. The animals seemed to keep the extra nitrogen that wasn’t going to feed gut microbes for themselves, allowing the rodents to grow bigger. That finding could help explain why antibiotics promote growth in farm animals.

People shouldn’t change their diets to consume less protein based on any one study alone, says Katrine Whiteson, a microbiome researcher at the University of California, Irvine.

However, she says, “generally eating lots of plants and getting a lot of fiber is likely to be a healthy diet, and that by nature would mean eating less nitrogen.” (IBP/net)

DENPASAR - The Denpasar municipality continues to develop new tourist objects outside the coastal area. One of them is by arranging riverbanks of 11 river flows passing through the city of Denpasar. However, only eight of them have the flow directly emptying out into the sea. The government has arranged five rivers such as the Badung River, Bindu River, Loloan River, Tagtag River and Mati River.

Acting Head of the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency, Nyoman Ngurah Jimmy Sidarta, when met after chairing a recent preparatory arrangement meeting for the riverbank at Bindu River, said the riverbank arrangement program is intended to create a comfortable river walk on riverbank.

Jimmy Sidarta added the arrangement making the rivers clean are also a concept of a river walk (a place to walk along the river). The rivers having been arranged are now used as recreation site and have an economic impact and can educate the public about cleanliness by increasing selfawareness not to make the river a place to dispose of garbage.

Tourist Destination Management Section Head at the Denpasar Tourism Office, Ni Made Sugiani, said that currently tourists have switched to looking for natural tourism through environmental preservation and cultural tourism. This river arrangement is expected to have an impact on the environment and will become one of the tourist attractions. To realize all the objectives, surely the rivers having been arranged into new tourist destinations must be equipped with various tourism supports such as access and identification of potential to be promoted. Besides, the community involvement is the main thing in preserving and maintaining the river tourist destination.

Chief of Ujung hamlet who is also a member of Clean River Community, Gusti Rai Ari Temaja, said that several rivers having been arranged like the Bindu River are expected to be continuously developed to other riverbanks. Thus, all the rivers in Denpasar city are well organized and become a tourist attraction. “This requires a commitment of all components, espe-

cially the community, to contribute to the making of clean river,” he hoped.

Similar opinion was expressed by the Chief of the Tukad Bindu Foundation, Ida Bagus Ari Manik. He said that community participation is the main thing for the success of the program in Bindu River. “Thanks for all who have supported, the World Bank through the PNPM Mandiri, and the Denpasar municipality that always supports the formation of existing community-based effort,” he said.

At Bindu River, there are now several facilities, such as traditional children’s games, Balinese culinary outlets, orchid gardens as well as catfish cultivation with aquaponic.

Head of Water Management Division at the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR), I Gusti Ngurah Putra Sanjaya, revealed that arrangement of the riverbanks is essentially meant to change the image of people that consider the river as a garbage dump. As a result, the river flow is filled with garbage.

With this arrangement, residents no longer throw garbage into the river.

Besides, the community can take advantage of the riverbanks for positive activities. For example, they can have recreation on the riverbanks as well as other interaction activities, such as fishing, jogging, and a place for making selfie which is now becoming a trend among young people.

The river arrangement has been worked on by the PUPR since 2015 started from the Loloan River with a project value of IDR 1.3 billion and handled by CV Pande Nusa. The arrangement continued in 2016 with a project value of IDR 1 billion.

Then, it was resumed in 2017 by working on two rivers, namely the Badung River and Tagtag River. The contract value for Badung River is IDR 5 billion worked on by PT Chandra Dwipa while the Tagtag River with a project value of IDR 1.5 billion was handled by CV Mulia Siwa Jaya.

The arrangement in the Badung River continued in 2018 with a value of IDR 2.6 billion by contractor on behalf of PT Karya Jaya Rahayu and will be completed in December 2018.

Farmer of Marga transforms less productive land into agro-tourism

DRIVEN by the desire to manage less productive paddy fields, one of the Marga farmers, Wayan Dika, succeeded in making agro tourism that is in demand not only by visitors from Tabanan but also those from outside Tabanan. His paddy fields are often dry during dry season so they cannot be planted. Then, it was transformed into a sunflower garden which becomes a suitable place to take pictures or just recreation.

This resident of Batannyuh hamlet, Belayu, Marga, Tabanan, said that at first the making of the agrotourism was driven by his intention to cultivate his family’s unproductive paddy fields when entering dry season.

“Every dry season, it cannot be planted with rice because there is no enough water. So, he can only plant rice during rainy season,” he said on Friday (Nov. 2) Originally he did not think of opening an agrotourism but aimed to plant the land with cut flowers so that the harvest yield can be sold to hotels. One of his friends suggested planting sunflowers. When planting the sunflowers in an area of 1,000 square meters, Dika claimed to learn much from social media. And he started the cultivation four months ago.

Unexpectedly, this effort made many people interested to come. Moreover, when looking at the overlay of sunflowers growing and starting to bloom makes it

suitable into a selfie spot. Through social media, the sunflower park has become well known and crowded with visitors. ’”Actually I have not dared to open agrotourism, but since it has been at issue on social media and many visitors come, I finally decided to make it a tourist destination,” he explained. At the moment, Dika and his friends are managing this agrotourism.

He continued that visitors to the sunflower garden are mostly younger generation who came from Badung, Denpasar to Jembrana. On average, there are 250-500 visitors per day. He said that other than wishing to see the beauty of sunflowers, many visitors came only to capture images of blooming sunflowers in an area of 1,000 square meters or take selfie with sunflower plants. “This garden spreads across the area of 1,000 square meters. Eighty percent of the land is planted with flowers while the remaining is planned for facilities,” he said.

Admission ticket to this agrotourism is only set at IDR 5,000 per person. Result of the ticket sales are used for flower garden maintenance and preparation of facilities. Currently, he is preparing an entrance gate, toilet and ticket counter. In the future, Dika planned to expand its agrotourism land. “There is an additional area of 3,500 square meters. We are not only going to plant sunflowers, but also other types such as chrysanthemum, tuberose and marigold. Impact of drought, hectares of estate plants in Kintamani faded

BANGLI - Dry season since the past few months has caused hectares of estate plants in Kintamani area to face drought. As a result, farmers’ horticulture crops, such as tangerine and tomatoes, now bearing fruits are threatened to die.

A farmer from Sukawana village, I Wayan Armada, stated the impact of this year’s drought had caused the tangerine plants to wither. He cannot do maximum watering because he needs a lot of water. Seeing the current condition of his plants, he also admitted to only surrender. Today, he can only spray the plants with pesticides while waiting for the rain.

According to Armada, if there is no rain this month, he ensured the tangerine plant will die. Conversely, if it rains in the near future, the withered tangerine plants will revive. “Well, if it doesn’t rain, farmers will certainly suffer great enough losses. Now, we can only surrender while waiting for the rain,” he said on Sunday (Nov. 4).

Solution to overcome plastic bottle waste into versatile products

GIANYAR - Combating plastic waste must indeed be driven by all levels of society. Well, the way to combat this plastic waste can be done with ecobrick techniques.

This simple technique is enough to compact plastic waste into a plastic bottle. Having been compacted, the bottles can be assembled into tables, chairs, and even as a substitute for bricks or concrete blocks to build houses.

“This simple technique becomes a trend for the management of plastic bottles nowadays. In Klungkung district, this has been implemented to organize its city parks,” explained an Ecobrick Trainer from Singaraja, Gede Praja Mahardika, when talking about solutions to overcome plastic bottle waste at

He recommended inserting plastic waste as much as 200-300 gram into a 600-ml plastic bottle. The key to the success of making this ecobrick is accuracy at the beginning and maintaining cleanliness, especially if wishing the plastic bottles to have a pattern. “So, when starting you should use matching plastic color. Thus, when arranging them it will look good. However, as the art implies, it will highly depend on individual inspiration,” he explained.

Not any kind of plastic can be put into the bottle. He emphasized the plastic waste must be clean and dry.

He himself has made an ecobrick

garden at his home at Sambangan, Buleleng. Approximately it took 3,000 ecobrick bottles. “I brought it from Yogya and have been prepared since 2017 at my field works. Upon arrival in Bali, every afternoon I routinely made this. Similarly, I collaborated with laundry outlet near my home and took advantage of the bottles they usually disposed of,” he explained.

He said the originators of this technology are foreigners, namely Russell Maier and Ani Himawati. They are leaders in the global ecobrick movement. “They have extensive experience in mobilizing community empowerment activities at villages, sub-districts, cities, provinces, and national level,” he explained.

This technique, he added, is

good enough to reduce the circulation of plastic waste on this earth because not all people can sort and recycle. Moreover, most are very indifferent, so plastic waste is thrown away. When rainy season comes, the plastic waste often appears with floods.

This alumnus of the Public Health Studies at Respati University Yogyakarta continuously tried to inspire younger generation, especially the residents of Sukawati village, to be responsible for the plastic bottles produced. “If the making of ecobricks has spread, environmental awareness will increase, consumption behavior will decrease, and people will move together to create community projects,” he concluded. The turmoil in the Indian Ocean nation that has seen one premier refuse to be sacked, and another battle to prove a majority in a parliament that is banned from meeting, has caused major upheaval that Sri Lanka cannot afford.

Amidst warnings from politicians of a “bloodbath” if the dispute escalates, tourists are cancelling hotel bookings just as Sri Lankan beaches and major sites like the Temple of the Tooth prepare for

peak season.

While no official figures have been given, deluxe hotels have reported cancellations and a critical decline in new bookings in the past 10 days.

“This comes at the worst possible time when people in Europe are making their holiday plans abroad,” a Colombo city hotel executive told AFP. “We have had a lot of cancellations from the United States.”

“With the political crisis our winter season is gone,” the director of a luxury beach resort in the south of the island said.

- Tourist dollars needed Western nations have warned their citizens to be on their guard in Sri Lanka.

“You should exercise vigilance and avoid all demonstrations or large political gatherings,” a British government advisory said.

Tourism is a cornerstone of the economy. More than 2.4 million foreign holidaymakers visited last year, spending $3.2 billion.

Authorities had been counting on a rise of more than 10 percent this year.

And whether Ranil Wickremesinghe stays in office or former president Mahinda Rajapakse takes his place, foreign earnings will be badly needed.

The Asian Development Bank had predicted the economy would grow by 3.8 percent this year and 4.5 percent in 2019, but all bets are now off. The power vacuum has raised doubts over a $1.5 billion Japanese-funded light rail project and another $480 million of US finance for transport and health, a Wickremesinghe minister, Patali Ranawaka, said last week.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was about to announce an agreement on releasing a new tranche of a $1.5 billion loan when President Maithripala Sirisena sacked Wickremesinghe on October 26.

He cited Colombo stock exchange figures showing foreign investors took out nearly $23 million from the market, compared to $35 million over the first nine months of this year.

Rajapakse has said he will cut down on non-essential imports and reduce personal and corporate taxes to encourage local industrialists and companies.

Fitch said however that a protracted political crisis could undermine foreign investor confidence and “make it more challenging” for Colombo to pay its debts. (afp)

Iran vows to ‘proudly bypass’ US sanctions

TEHRAN - Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic republic “will proudly bypass sanctions” by the United States that took effect on Monday targeting the country’s oil and financial sectors.

“I announce that we will proudly bypass your illegal, unjust sanctions because it’s against international regulations,” Rouhani said in a televised speech.

“We are in a situation of economic war, confronting a bullying power. I don’t think that in the history of America, someone has entered the White House who is so against law and international conventions,” he added.

The measures described by

Washington as “the toughest sanctions ever” follow US President Donald Trump’s controversial decision in May to abandon the multination nuclear deal with Tehran.

The latest tranche aim to significantly cut Iran’s oil exports -- which have already fallen by around one million barrels a day since May -- and cut it off from international finance. The United States has given temporary exemptions to eight countries -- including India, Japan and Turkey -- to continue buying oil in a bid to avoid disturbing their economies and global markets.

But US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed to push Iran’s oil sales to zero.

“Watch what we do. Watch as we’ve already taken more crude oil off the market than any time in previous history,” he told CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

Trump’s administration says it wants a new deal with Iran that curbs its interventions around the Middle East and missile programme -- demands that have been flatly rejected by Tehran.

“Constantly they are sending us messages saying ‘Let’s sit and negotiate.’ Negotiations for what?” said Rouhani.

Iran braces for oil sanctions after currency crash, protests

TEHRAN — Iran is bracing for the restoration of U.S. sanctions on its vital oil industry next week, as it grapples with an economic crisis that has sparked sporadic protests over rising prices, corruption and unemployment.

The Trump administration on Friday announced the reimposition of all U.S. sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, ramping up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.

The oil sanctions, set to take effect on Monday, will target the country’s largest source of revenue in the most punishing action taken since the Trump administration withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in May, and will also affect Iranian shipping and financial transactions.

Tehran state TV reported on the sanctions Friday, citing international media outlets and highlighting the U.S. decision to allow eight nations to maintain imports of crude oil from Tehran, calling it a sign of the U.S.’s “failure” to reduce Iran’s oil exports to nil.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the exemption for eight nations on Friday, saying they would be announced on Monday and will include U.S. allies such as Turkey, Italy, India, Japan and South Korea which had made efforts to eliminate their imports but could not complete the task by Monday.

The governor of Iran’s central bank, Valiollah Seif, posted on his Instagram account: “Today it is clear for all that the U.S. has failed in full sanction and bringing Iran’s oil (export) to zero.”

Economic analyst Sasan Shahveisi told state TV that based past experiences of crude oil sanctions, Iran’s oil exports will not be heavily damaged since there will be a consequent hike in oil prices. He said regional oil exporters like rival Saudi Arabia cannot quickly increase their oil production since “it will damage their capacity.”

The United States has already restored sanctions on Iran targeting financial transactions involving U.S. dollars, Iran’s automotive sector and the purchase of commercial airplanes and metals, including gold.

The White House insists the sanctions are not aimed at toppling the Islamic Republic, but at forc-

ing Iran to dramatically alter its policies in the region, including its support for militant groups across the Mideast and its development of ballistic missiles. The U.N. nuclear agency says Iran is complying with the nuclear deal.

The renewed sanctions have already taken a heavy toll, with the rial losing half its value since April and the prices of fruit, poultry, eggs and milk skyrocketing. Protests erupted across the country in December, with some demonstrators chanting against the government and clashing with police. Sporadic demonstrations have been held in recent months, including strikes by workers, teachers and truck drivers.

The nuclear accord struck under the Obama administration - and also signed by Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia - lifted crippling international sanctions in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program. Western countries had long suspected Iran’s nuclear program masked the covert pursuit of atomic weapons, allegations denied

by Iran, which has always insisted its nuclear activities are for energy and other peaceful purposes.

After the agreement took effect in 2016, Iran began exporting its oil more freely and signed billiondollar agreements with Airbus, Boeing and other Western firms.

But the legacy of decades of sanctions and economic mismanagement remained, and the nuclear deal’s future was thrown into uncertainty with the election of President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly vowed to exit the deal and finally withdrew in May. Starting Monday, the Trump administration has promised that companies that fail to comply with the sanctions will be barred from doing business in the U.S. Although Washington might grant waivers to countries like China and India, which are among the biggest importers of Iranian crude, the expectation is that the U.S. will demand substantial curbs on how much is imported.

But the 1 million barrels a day Iran intends to sell in the exchange - which foreign dealers can access - is a fraction of the peak 2.5 million barrels a day that Iran sold before the Trump administration announced the re-imposition of sanctions.

European countries, which remain committed to the nuclear deal, have discussed taking measures that would shield European companies from the U.S. sanctions and allow them to keep doing business in Iran. But thus far they have been unable to prevent an exodus of major firms, including Boeing and Airbus, which suspended the aircraft purchases. General Electric, Maersk, Peugeot, Renault, Siemens, and Total have also

cancelled business deals in Iran, according to the Washington-based Atlantic Council.

Despite the unraveling of the nuclear deal, Iran is still complying with it, and appears to be waiting out Trump, hoping his successor rejoins the agreement.

In the meantime, the renewed sanctions risk further undermining Rouhani, a relative moderate, and strengthening hard-liners distrustful of the West, the International Crisis Group said in a report this week.

“The alternative to both sides taking a step back from the escalatory path is a sanctions regime that penalizes Iran and the Iranian people, but does not enhance peace and security in the region and could well lead to war.” (ap)

He explained the dancers of Ratu Brutuk are carefully selected from girls and boys. Prior to dancing, they have to go through a series of purification procession with a 15-day pause at Pancering Jagat Temple.

Hidden history: Radar probes mass graves from Khmer Rouge era

PREY VENG - A man walks gingerly over a small field in rural Cambodia, pushing a lawnmower-like contraption that deploys ground-penetrating radar to unearth clues of mass graves.

The pilot project is twinning technology and fieldwork to locate remains of victims of the Khmer Rouge, the ultra-Maoist regime whose quest to build an agrarian utopia from 1975-1979 left an estimated two million Cambodians dead.

Hacked to death, starved, overworked or ravaged by illness, their bodies were dumped in hastily dug pits all over the country. They were thrown in rice paddies, down caves and on the grounds of Buddhist monasteries.

Many of the “Killing Fields” have been logged, providing experts with an estimate of 20,000 mass graves -- which is defined as a pit containing four or more bodies -- throughout the country.

But researchers are now turning to radar to uncover more details on the existing sites -- such as how many bodies they might contain -- and find new ones.

“This is the first time ever that we have used highend technology in Cambodia to locate mass graves created by the Khmer Rouge,” said Pheng Pong-Rasy from the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DCCam), which is overseeing the effort.

He added that DC-Cam decided to start the new search in the eastern province of Prey Veng, where the Khmer Rouge’s revolutionary movement had some of its early gains.

“The children must know their own history, what happened in their location,” he said.

‘How many victims’

They began in late October next to buildings at Mesang High School -- specifically plots close to some concrete toilets and an outdoor cafeteria.

The area was once a worship site but the Khmer Rouge converted it into a place for executions. After the regime fell a school was built nearby.

Students and residents helped clear the overgrown area and operators from SparrowHawk Far East, a new Phnom Penh-based company tapped to test out the idea, walked over it sending radar signals below that can later be developed into three-dimensional images.

“When there is an object underground or the ground has been disturbed before, if there was a hole dug, it will give off a different signature,” managing director Michael Henshaw told AFP. “It’s good for finding underground utilities like water pipes and electric pipes, it’s good for archeology to find old structures underground,” he said. “But it’s also been used to find mass graves.”

Khmer Rouge researchers have since the 1990s relied mainly on meticulous interviews with the regime’s victims and perpetrators to pinpoint the locations of mass graves.

Elsewhere radar has helped locate indigenous burial sites -- graves from the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939 and victims of the 1990s conflict in Bosnia.

In September, it also aided in the discovery of at least 166 bodies in the Mexican state of Veracruz, a territory plagued by drug cartels.

Henshaw said the results can bring about a greater understanding of what happened in Cambodia.

“We can try to put a better number on how many victims there actually were,” he said.

‘Died without justice’

As curious students look on, Henshaw examines preliminary results on a screen while the sun, interrupted by the occasional rainshower, beats down.

He points to what he calls “anomalies”, which look like small ridges next to each other, possibly signifying decomposed remains.

“But this definitely tells you that there is something under the ground, and there’s a lot of it.”

SparrowHawk is plugging the data into special software and preparing a full report on their findings, and DC-CAM will then make a decision on how far to replicate the study.

No matter the results from Prey Veng there will be no excavations and reburials. In keeping with local tradition, the remains will not be disturbed and will will stay where they are.

“They already died without justice, so if we dig up graves, it will destroy their souls,” Pong-Rasy said.

“We just want to know how many bodies are in the graves.”

DC-Cam maintains a database of mass graves previously discovered and it has provided information on sites to a war crimes tribunal that has convicted two top Khmer Rouge officials and a chief jailer.

But Youk Chhang, DC-Cam’s director, said the picture is still incomplete.

“Crimes do not end at a tribunal,” he told AFP, adding that a better future for Cambodia required “understanding the horrors” of its past.

Khashoggi killing: sons ask Saudis to return his body WASHINGTON - The sons of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi have asked Saudi authorities to return the body of their father so the family can properly grieve, they told CNN in an interview aired Sunday.

Khashoggi was killed inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul by a team sent from Riyadh on October 2, a murder Turkey’s president said was ordered from “the highest levels” of Saudi Arabia’s government.

“I really hope that whatever happened wasn’t painful for him, or it was quick. Or he had a peaceful death,” Abdullah Khashoggi told the US network during the interview in Washington.

His brother Salah said “all what we want right now is to bury him in Al Baqi in Medina with the rest of his family,” referencing a cemetery in Saudi Arabia.

“I talked about that with the Saudi authorities and I just hope that it happens soon.”

Turkey’s chief prosecutor said recently that Khashoggi was strangled as soon as he entered the consulate and also confirmed the body was dismembered.

Yasin Aktay, an advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, hinted in an article published on Friday that the body may even have been destroyed in acid.

Khashoggi’s killing has pro-

voked widespread outrage and sharp criticism from Washington, usually the staunchest of allies.

Khashoggi’s sons voiced worry that the work of their father, a columnist for The Washington Post, was being distorted for political reasons.

“I see a lot of people coming out right now and trying to claim his legacy and unfortunately some of them are using that in a political way that we totally don’t agree with,” Salah told CNN. “My fear is that it’s being over politicized.”

“Jamal was never a dissident. He believed in the monarchy, that it is the thing that is keeping the country together.”

The brothers said they have relied primarily on news reports to piece together an understanding of their father’s death.

“There’s a lot of ups and downs.... We’re trying to get the story -- bits and pieces of the story to complete the whole picture,” Abdullah said. “It’s confusing and difficult.”

“It’s not a normal situation and not a normal death.”

Salah emphasized that “the King has stressed that everybody will be brought to justice. And I have faith in that.”

The murdered journalist’s fiancee meanwhile has called on US President Donald Trump to back Turkey’s efforts to probe the death. (afp)

Official: Divers see Lion Air jet fuselage, new ‘ping’ heard

JAKARTA — Divers reported seeing the fuselage and engines of the crashed Lion Air jet on the seafloor and a ping locator has detected a signal that may be from the cockpit voice recorder, Indonesia’s search and rescue chief said Saturday.

Speaking on the sixth day of the search, Muhammad Syaugi said that two engines and more landing gear had been found. The plane crashed in waters 30 meters (98 feet) deep but strong currents have hampered the search.

“I haven’t seen it myself but I got information from some divers that they have seen the fuselage,” he said at a news conference at a Jakarta port where body bags, debris and passenger belongings are first taken.

The brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet plunged into the Java Sea just minutes after takeoff from Jakarta early on Oct. 29, killing all 189 people on board.

Local media reported Saturday that the

search effort had claimed the life of a diver on Friday evening.

The flight data recorder was recovered on Thursday and Syaugi said a “low ping signal” was detected by a sonar locator that could be the black box voice recorder.

Divers and a remotely operated vehicle have been searching the suspected location since Saturday morning.

Flight tracking websites show the plane had erratic speed and altitude during its 13 minute flight Monday and a previous flight on Sunday from Bali to Jakarta. Passengers on Sunday’s flight reported terrifying descents and in both cases the different cockpit crews requested to return to their departure airport shortly after takeoff.

Lion has claimed a technical problem was fixed after Sunday’s fight.

Investigators are still attempting to retrieve information from the flight data recorder’s “crash survivable memory

unit” that will help determine the cause of the disaster. It has been damaged and requires special handling, they say.

The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 on board.

Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. The ban was completely lifted in June. The U.S. lifted a decadelong ban in 2016.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia’s youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing region of more than 600 million people.(ap)

The 41-year-old unbeaten American, who won world titles in five different weight divisions and was considered the best pound-forpound boxer in the sport, out-boxed Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor in his last fight in August 2017.

That victory improved his boxing record to a perfect 50-0, but the format or rules for his meeting with the baby-faced Nasukawa were not specified by the Japanese mixed martial arts promoters RIZIN. Mayweather posted a teaser photo on his Instagram feed at the weekend, showing him wearing kickboxing gloves.

“I want to give the people what they want -- blood, sweat and tears,” Mayweather told a news conference in Tokyo after reportedly flying into Japan on his private jet.

LOS ANGELES - Serge Ibaka delivered a career-high 34 points in a masterful display of shooting as the Kawhi Leonard-less Toronto Raptors rolled over the Los Angeles Lakers 121-107 on Sunday.

Ibaka drained his first 14 shots of the game as Toronto embarrassed the Lakers by grabbing a shocking 31point lead in the first half en route to their ninth win of the NBA season.

“They just came out and hit us right in the mouth,” said Lakers forward LeBron James.

Once their starters had seized command the Raptors worked some of their reserve players into the contest.

Los Angeles cut the margin to 117107 in the fourth but they failed to get any closer with the game out of hand and James sitting on the bench in the final quarter.

“It was very, very hard to make a game of it when you are trying to expend so much energy trying to get back into it,” said James.

“I don’t really like to talk about it being disappointing. There was a lot of things we could have done better today.” Ibaka finished 15-of-17 from the field and didn’t miss a shot until 5:16 of the third quarter. He also added 10 rebounds.

“It is true I played great but to me we got the win and that is the most important thing,” said Ibaka.

Kyle Lowry added 21 points and 15 assists as the Eastern Conferenceleading Raptors recorded their eighth consecutive win over the Lakers since 2014. James finished with just 18 points. Kyle Kuzma scored 24 points and Brandon Ingram added 16 for the Lakers.

Leonard missed the game with a sore left foot which no doubt had the Lakers breathing a sigh of relief. If there was a mercy rule in basketball the Lakers would have exercised it in the first.

po finished with a triple double as the Milwaukee Bucks continued their best NBA start to a season by dominating the Sacramento Kings 144-109.

Antetokounmpo finished with 26 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists, securing his second triple double of the season with his 10th assist at the end of the third quarter.

“A great win for the team,” Antetokounmpo said. “When I drove the ball, they were wide open. I passed it, and they knocked down everything.”

Milwaukee, who improved to 8-1 on the season, recorded a season-high for points in a game and made a franchise record 22 threes.

Antetokounmpo’s first tripledouble of the season came against the Philadelphia 76ers on October 24th when he delivered 32 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

Antetokounmpo passed to Pat Connaughton in the corner for his 10th assist as Connaughton drained a three pointer to give the Bucks a 108-82 lead at the end of the third.

In New York, D’Angelo Russell scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half, and the Brooklyn Nets kept the Philadelphia 76ers winless on the road with a 122-97 win.

The 76ers committed 28 turnovers and are now 0-5 away from home this season.

Barca’s support cast show their worth as Messi nears return against Inter

Lionel Messi could make an earlier return than expected against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday but Barcelona have hardly missed him.

Four wins out of four, including a stroll past Inter Milan and a hammering of Real Madrid so severe it cost their coach his job, mean Messi reunites with a team enjoying its strongest run of the season, ironically without its star striker.

Barca will certainly be delighted, relieved even, when his recovery is complete. The club have named Messi in their squad for the match at the San Siro, even if he is yet to be given the medical all-clear.

It could be his involvement is either as a substitute or even delayed until Sunday, when Barca host Real Betis in La Liga.

Perhaps it will depend on how much Barca need him and, in that respect, Messi’s absence has been less pronounced than many predicted 15 days ago when he tumbled and broke his right arm against Sevilla.

Circumstances have helped. After Inter, came Real, who were in a mess, Cultural Leonesa, who play in Spain’s third tier, and Rayo Vallecano, who

are 19th in the table. But wins, in any form, cannot be overlooked. Real’s against Real Valladolid on Saturday was their first in six league games.

More crucially, key players have delivered while others, less prominent, have stepped up.

Luis Suarez scored twice on Saturday, the second an 89th-minute winner to complete a late comeback against Rayo. After six games without a goal, he has now hit six in his last four.

“We know how many goals Luis and Leo have scored together,” Ivan Rakitic said after the match.

“We want Luis to keep this run going, of course, but we’re also looking forward to Leo coming back. We know they will score many goals together again.”

Racing onto Rakitic’s pass and teeing up Suarez to tap in the opener at Vallecas was also Jordi Alba, who has been arguably Barca’s best player this season.

Luis Enrique is yet to pick him for

Spain but it would be hard to justify ignoring the full-back again when the next squad is announced later this week.

“I’m going to do everything I can to get selected, as I’ve always done ever since I made my debut with the national team,” Alba said. “Under the new coach I’m not being picked but I’m working on it.”

Messi’s absence opened up a gap to be filled further forward and many expected the chance to be given to the 21-year-old Ousmane Dembele.

Instead, the more diligent Rafinha was named in the starting line-up at home to Inter last month and the Brazilian justified Ernesto Valverde’s faith by scoring the opener against the same club he played for on loan only five months ago.

Then, Rafinha’s Barca future looked bleak but Valverde’s preference carries a clear message to the likes of Dembele and Malcom about the value he places on concentration, pressing off the ball and teamwork.

“Rafinha is a player who moves well between lines,” Valverde said after the win over Inter. “He is generous with his effort and today he was

very good.”

Only last month, the pressure mounting on Valverde was not incomparable to that felt by Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid.

Barca were without a win in four league games and defensive errors looked set to play havoc with their

title challenge. Now, they sit four points clear at the top of La Liga and head to Italy on the back of five wins on the bounce.

Do-or-die for Spurs in Euro crunch Desperate to avoid Champions League elimination at the group stage for the second time in three years, Tottenham face a do-or-die clash against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are third in Group B after taking just one point from their first three matches.

Tottenham’s exit from Europe’s elite club competition would be confirmed if they lose to PSV at Wembley and second placed Inter Milan beat group leaders Barcelona.

Even a draw against PSV won’t be enough if Inter win.

That would be another wretched conclusion to a Champions League campaign that began with high hopes for Tottenham.

After failing to get past the group stage two seasons ago, Tottenham appeared to announce their arrival on the European stage with an impressive group victory over Real Madrid last term.

“I am so happy right from the beginning. Since I arrived here we created a very good culture about fight and altogether the belief,” Pochettino said.

Alli has been bothered by a hamstring problem in recent weeks but, with Tottenham’s midfield hit by injuries, he is likely to face PSV. Mousa Dembele limped off in the first half against Wolves with an ankle injury, while Eric Dier missed the match due to a thigh problem and Victor Wanyama has a long-term knee issue.

Having signed a new longterm contract last week, Tottenham have put their faith in Alli and will be looking for him to repay that belief in the kind of high-stakes encounter he needs to dominate more often.

“We all want to achieve something great. As young players as well, we want to keep improving and this is a great place to do that,” Alli said after agreeing his bumper pay rise.

Barca’s support cast show their worth as Messi nears return against Inter

Lionel Messi could make an earlier return than expected against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday but Barcelona have hardly missed him.

Four wins out of four, including a stroll past Inter Milan and a hammering of Real Madrid so severe it cost their coach his job, mean Messi reunites with a team enjoying its strongest run of the season, ironically without its star striker.

Barca will certainly be delighted, relieved even, when his recovery is complete. The club have named Messi in their squad for the match at the San Siro, even if he is yet to be given the medical all-clear.

It could be his involvement is either as a substitute or even delayed until Sunday, when Barca host Real Betis in La Liga.

Perhaps it will depend on how much Barca need him and, in that respect, Messi’s absence has been less pronounced than many predicted 15 days ago when he tumbled and broke his right arm against Sevilla.

Circumstances have helped. After Inter, came Real, who were in a mess, Cultural Leonesa, who play in Spain’s third tier, and Rayo Vallecano, who

are 19th in the table. But wins, in any form, cannot be overlooked. Real’s against Real Valladolid on Saturday was their first in six league games.

More crucially, key players have delivered while others, less prominent, have stepped up.

Luis Suarez scored twice on Saturday, the second an 89th-minute winner to complete a late comeback against Rayo. After six games without a goal, he has now hit six in his last four.

“We know how many goals Luis and Leo have scored together,” Ivan Rakitic said after the match.

“We want Luis to keep this run going, of course, but we’re also looking forward to Leo coming back. We know they will score many goals together again.”

Racing onto Rakitic’s pass and teeing up Suarez to tap in the opener at Vallecas was also Jordi Alba, who has been arguably Barca’s best player this season.

Luis Enrique is yet to pick him for

Spain but it would be hard to justify ignoring the full-back again when the next squad is announced later this week.

“I’m going to do everything I can to get selected, as I’ve always done ever since I made my debut with the national team,” Alba said. “Under the new coach I’m not being picked but I’m working on it.”

Messi’s absence opened up a gap to be filled further forward and many expected the chance to be given to the 21-year-old Ousmane Dembele.

Instead, the more diligent Rafinha was named in the starting line-up at home to Inter last month and the Brazilian justified Ernesto Valverde’s faith by scoring the opener against the same club he played for on loan only five months ago.

Then, Rafinha’s Barca future looked bleak but Valverde’s preference carries a clear message to the likes of Dembele and Malcom about the value he places on concentration, pressing off the ball and teamwork.

“Rafinha is a player who moves well between lines,” Valverde said after the win over Inter. “He is generous with his effort and today he was

very good.”

Only last month, the pressure mounting on Valverde was not incomparable to that felt by Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid.

Barca were without a win in four league games and defensive errors looked set to play havoc with their

title challenge. Now, they sit four points clear at the top of La Liga and head to Italy on the back of five wins on the bounce.

LOS ANGELES - Serge Ibaka delivered a career-high 34 points in a masterful display of shooting as the Kawhi Leonard-less Toronto Raptors rolled over the Los Angeles Lakers 121-107 on Sunday.

Hidden history: Radar probes mass graves from Khmer Rouge era

PREY VENG - A man walks gingerly over a small field in rural Cambodia, pushing a lawnmower-like contraption that deploys ground-penetrating radar to unearth clues of mass graves.

The pilot project is twinning technology and fieldwork to locate remains of victims of the Khmer Rouge, the ultra-Maoist regime whose quest to build an agrarian utopia from 1975-1979 left an estimated two million Cambodians dead.

Hacked to death, starved, overworked or ravaged by illness, their bodies were dumped in hastily dug pits all over the country. They were thrown in rice paddies, down caves and on the grounds of Buddhist monasteries.

Many of the “Killing Fields” have been logged, providing experts with an estimate of 20,000 mass graves -- which is defined as a pit containing four or more bodies -- throughout the country.

But researchers are now turning to radar to uncover more details on the existing sites -- such as how many bodies they might contain -- and find new ones.

“This is the first time ever that we have used highend technology in Cambodia to locate mass graves created by the Khmer Rouge,” said Pheng Pong-Rasy from the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DCCam), which is overseeing the effort.

He added that DC-Cam decided to start the new search in the eastern province of Prey Veng, where the Khmer Rouge’s revolutionary movement had some of its early gains.

“The children must know their own history, what happened in their location,” he said.

‘How many victims’

They began in late October next to buildings at Mesang High School -- specifically plots close to some concrete toilets and an outdoor cafeteria.

The area was once a worship site but the Khmer Rouge converted it into a place for executions. After the regime fell a school was built nearby.

Students and residents helped clear the overgrown area and operators from SparrowHawk Far East, a new Phnom Penh-based company tapped to test out the idea, walked over it sending radar signals below that can later be developed into three-dimensional images.

“When there is an object underground or the ground has been disturbed before, if there was a hole dug, it will give off a different signature,” managing director Michael Henshaw told AFP. “It’s good for finding underground utilities like water pipes and electric pipes, it’s good for archeology to find old structures underground,” he said. “But it’s also been used to find mass graves.”

Khmer Rouge researchers have since the 1990s relied mainly on meticulous interviews with the regime’s victims and perpetrators to pinpoint the locations of mass graves.

Elsewhere radar has helped locate indigenous burial sites -- graves from the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939 and victims of the 1990s conflict in Bosnia.

In September, it also aided in the discovery of at least 166 bodies in the Mexican state of Veracruz, a territory plagued by drug cartels.

Henshaw said the results can bring about a greater understanding of what happened in Cambodia.

“We can try to put a better number on how many victims there actually were,” he said.

‘Died without justice’

As curious students look on, Henshaw examines preliminary results on a screen while the sun, interrupted by the occasional rainshower, beats down.

He points to what he calls “anomalies”, which look like small ridges next to each other, possibly signifying decomposed remains.

“But this definitely tells you that there is something under the ground, and there’s a lot of it.”

SparrowHawk is plugging the data into special software and preparing a full report on their findings, and DC-CAM will then make a decision on how far to replicate the study.

No matter the results from Prey Veng there will be no excavations and reburials. In keeping with local tradition, the remains will not be disturbed and will will stay where they are.

“They already died without justice, so if we dig up graves, it will destroy their souls,” Pong-Rasy said.

“We just want to know how many bodies are in the graves.”

DC-Cam maintains a database of mass graves previously discovered and it has provided information on sites to a war crimes tribunal that has convicted two top Khmer Rouge officials and a chief jailer.

But Youk Chhang, DC-Cam’s director, said the picture is still incomplete.

“Crimes do not end at a tribunal,” he told AFP, adding that a better future for Cambodia required “understanding the horrors” of its past.

Khashoggi killing: sons ask Saudis to return his body WASHINGTON - The sons of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi have asked Saudi authorities to return the body of their father so the family can properly grieve, they told CNN in an interview aired Sunday.

Khashoggi was killed inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul by a team sent from Riyadh on October 2, a murder Turkey’s president said was ordered from “the highest levels” of Saudi Arabia’s government.

“I really hope that whatever happened wasn’t painful for him, or it was quick. Or he had a peaceful death,” Abdullah Khashoggi told the US network during the interview in Washington.

His brother Salah said “all what we want right now is to bury him in Al Baqi in Medina with the rest of his family,” referencing a cemetery in Saudi Arabia.

“I talked about that with the Saudi authorities and I just hope that it happens soon.”

Turkey’s chief prosecutor said recently that Khashoggi was strangled as soon as he entered the consulate and also confirmed the body was dismembered.

Yasin Aktay, an advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, hinted in an article published on Friday that the body may even have been destroyed in acid.

Khashoggi’s killing has pro-

voked widespread outrage and sharp criticism from Washington, usually the staunchest of allies.

Khashoggi’s sons voiced worry that the work of their father, a columnist for The Washington Post, was being distorted for political reasons.

“I see a lot of people coming out right now and trying to claim his legacy and unfortunately some of them are using that in a political way that we totally don’t agree with,” Salah told CNN. “My fear is that it’s being over politicized.”

“Jamal was never a dissident. He believed in the monarchy, that it is the thing that is keeping the country together.”

The brothers said they have relied primarily on news reports to piece together an understanding of their father’s death.

“There’s a lot of ups and downs.... We’re trying to get the story -- bits and pieces of the story to complete the whole picture,” Abdullah said. “It’s confusing and difficult.”

“It’s not a normal situation and not a normal death.”

Salah emphasized that “the King has stressed that everybody will be brought to justice. And I have faith in that.”

The murdered journalist’s fiancee meanwhile has called on US President Donald Trump to back Turkey’s efforts to probe the death. (afp)

Official: Divers see Lion Air jet fuselage, new ‘ping’ heard

JAKARTA — Divers reported seeing the fuselage and engines of the crashed Lion Air jet on the seafloor and a ping locator has detected a signal that may be from the cockpit voice recorder, Indonesia’s search and rescue chief said Saturday.

Speaking on the sixth day of the search, Muhammad Syaugi said that two engines and more landing gear had been found. The plane crashed in waters 30 meters (98 feet) deep but strong currents have hampered the search.

“I haven’t seen it myself but I got information from some divers that they have seen the fuselage,” he said at a news conference at a Jakarta port where body bags, debris and passenger belongings are first taken.

The brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet plunged into the Java Sea just minutes after takeoff from Jakarta early on Oct. 29, killing all 189 people on board.

Local media reported Saturday that the

search effort had claimed the life of a diver on Friday evening.

The flight data recorder was recovered on Thursday and Syaugi said a “low ping signal” was detected by a sonar locator that could be the black box voice recorder.

Divers and a remotely operated vehicle have been searching the suspected location since Saturday morning.

Flight tracking websites show the plane had erratic speed and altitude during its 13 minute flight Monday and a previous flight on Sunday from Bali to Jakarta. Passengers on Sunday’s flight reported terrifying descents and in both cases the different cockpit crews requested to return to their departure airport shortly after takeoff.

Lion has claimed a technical problem was fixed after Sunday’s fight.

Investigators are still attempting to retrieve information from the flight data recorder’s “crash survivable memory

unit” that will help determine the cause of the disaster. It has been damaged and requires special handling, they say.

The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 on board.

Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. The ban was completely lifted in June. The U.S. lifted a decadelong ban in 2016.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia’s youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing region of more than 600 million people.(ap)

Iran braces for oil sanctions after currency crash, protests

TEHRAN — Iran is bracing for the restoration of U.S. sanctions on its vital oil industry next week, as it grapples with an economic crisis that has sparked sporadic protests over rising prices, corruption and unemployment.

The Trump administration on Friday announced the reimposition of all U.S. sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, ramping up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic.

The oil sanctions, set to take effect on Monday, will target the country’s largest source of revenue in the most punishing action taken since the Trump administration withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in May, and will also affect Iranian shipping and financial transactions.

Tehran state TV reported on the sanctions Friday, citing international media outlets and highlighting the U.S. decision to allow eight nations to maintain imports of crude oil from Tehran, calling it a sign of the U.S.’s “failure” to reduce Iran’s oil exports to nil.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the exemption for eight nations on Friday, saying they would be announced on Monday and will include U.S. allies such as Turkey, Italy, India, Japan and South Korea which had made efforts to eliminate their imports but could not complete the task by Monday.

The governor of Iran’s central bank, Valiollah Seif, posted on his Instagram account: “Today it is clear for all that the U.S. has failed in full sanction and bringing Iran’s oil (export) to zero.”

Economic analyst Sasan Shahveisi told state TV that based past experiences of crude oil sanctions, Iran’s oil exports will not be heavily damaged since there will be a consequent hike in oil prices. He said regional oil exporters like rival Saudi Arabia cannot quickly increase their oil production since “it will damage their capacity.”

The United States has already restored sanctions on Iran targeting financial transactions involving U.S. dollars, Iran’s automotive sector and the purchase of commercial airplanes and metals, including gold.

The White House insists the sanctions are not aimed at toppling the Islamic Republic, but at forc-

ing Iran to dramatically alter its policies in the region, including its support for militant groups across the Mideast and its development of ballistic missiles. The U.N. nuclear agency says Iran is complying with the nuclear deal.

The renewed sanctions have already taken a heavy toll, with the rial losing half its value since April and the prices of fruit, poultry, eggs and milk skyrocketing. Protests erupted across the country in December, with some demonstrators chanting against the government and clashing with police. Sporadic demonstrations have been held in recent months, including strikes by workers, teachers and truck drivers.

The nuclear accord struck under the Obama administration - and also signed by Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia - lifted crippling international sanctions in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program. Western countries had long suspected Iran’s nuclear program masked the covert pursuit of atomic weapons, allegations denied

by Iran, which has always insisted its nuclear activities are for energy and other peaceful purposes.

After the agreement took effect in 2016, Iran began exporting its oil more freely and signed billiondollar agreements with Airbus, Boeing and other Western firms.

But the legacy of decades of sanctions and economic mismanagement remained, and the nuclear deal’s future was thrown into uncertainty with the election of President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly vowed to exit the deal and finally withdrew in May. Starting Monday, the Trump administration has promised that companies that fail to comply with the sanctions will be barred from doing business in the U.S. Although Washington might grant waivers to countries like China and India, which are among the biggest importers of Iranian crude, the expectation is that the U.S. will demand substantial curbs on how much is imported.

But the 1 million barrels a day Iran intends to sell in the exchange - which foreign dealers can access - is a fraction of the peak 2.5 million barrels a day that Iran sold before the Trump administration announced the re-imposition of sanctions.

European countries, which remain committed to the nuclear deal, have discussed taking measures that would shield European companies from the U.S. sanctions and allow them to keep doing business in Iran. But thus far they have been unable to prevent an exodus of major firms, including Boeing and Airbus, which suspended the aircraft purchases. General Electric, Maersk, Peugeot, Renault, Siemens, and Total have also

cancelled business deals in Iran, according to the Washington-based Atlantic Council.

Despite the unraveling of the nuclear deal, Iran is still complying with it, and appears to be waiting out Trump, hoping his successor rejoins the agreement.

In the meantime, the renewed sanctions risk further undermining Rouhani, a relative moderate, and strengthening hard-liners distrustful of the West, the International Crisis Group said in a report this week.

“The alternative to both sides taking a step back from the escalatory path is a sanctions regime that penalizes Iran and the Iranian people, but does not enhance peace and security in the region and could well lead to war.” (ap)

This tradition is held every year to welcome the Caka New Year.

It poses a form of purification of macrocosm and microcosm.

“Hopefully, with this lukat geni we can be bestowed with safety, both for ourselves and the surrounding environment,” said Rimawan.

He explained the lukat geni tradition uses fire of 36 pieces of dried palm leaves tied together or summed into nine (9) located in the nine points of the compass or Dewata Nawa Sanga. Impact of drought, hectares of estate plants in Kintamani faded

BANGLI - Dry season since the past few months has caused hectares of estate plants in Kintamani area to face drought. As a result, farmers’ horticulture crops, such as tangerine and tomatoes, now bearing fruits are threatened to die.

A farmer from Sukawana village, I Wayan Armada, stated the impact of this year’s drought had caused the tangerine plants to wither. He cannot do maximum watering because he needs a lot of water. Seeing the current condition of his plants, he also admitted to only surrender. Today, he can only spray the plants with pesticides while waiting for the rain.

According to Armada, if there is no rain this month, he ensured the tangerine plant will die. Conversely, if it rains in the near future, the withered tangerine plants will revive. “Well, if it doesn’t rain, farmers will certainly suffer great enough losses. Now, we can only surrender while waiting for the rain,” he said on Sunday (Nov. 4).

garden at his home at Sambangan, Buleleng. Approximately it took 3,000 ecobrick bottles. “I brought it from Yogya and have been prepared since 2017 at my field works. Upon arrival in Bali, every afternoon I routinely made this. Similarly, I collaborated with laundry outlet near my home and took advantage of the bottles they usually disposed of,” he explained.

He said the originators of this technology are foreigners, namely Russell Maier and Ani Himawati. They are leaders in the global ecobrick movement. “They have extensive experience in mobilizing community empowerment activities at villages, sub-districts, cities, provinces, and national level,” he explained.

This technique, he added, is

good enough to reduce the circulation of plastic waste on this earth because not all people can sort and recycle. Moreover, most are very indifferent, so plastic waste is thrown away. When rainy season comes, the plastic waste often appears with floods.

This alumnus of the Public Health Studies at Respati University Yogyakarta continuously tried to inspire younger generation, especially the residents of Sukawati village, to be responsible for the plastic bottles produced. “If the making of ecobricks has spread, environmental awareness will increase, consumption behavior will decrease, and people will move together to create community projects,” he concluded. The turmoil in the Indian Ocean nation that has seen one premier refuse to be sacked, and another battle to prove a majority in a parliament that is banned from meeting, has caused major upheaval that Sri Lanka cannot afford.

Amidst warnings from politicians of a “bloodbath” if the dispute escalates, tourists are cancelling hotel bookings just as Sri Lankan beaches and major sites like the Temple of the Tooth prepare for

peak season.

While no official figures have been given, deluxe hotels have reported cancellations and a critical decline in new bookings in the past 10 days.

“This comes at the worst possible time when people in Europe are making their holiday plans abroad,” a Colombo city hotel executive told AFP. “We have had a lot of cancellations from the United States.”

“With the political crisis our winter season is gone,” the director of a luxury beach resort in the south of the island said.

- Tourist dollars needed Western nations have warned their citizens to be on their guard in Sri Lanka.

“You should exercise vigilance and avoid all demonstrations or large political gatherings,” a British government advisory said.

Tourism is a cornerstone of the economy. More than 2.4 million foreign holidaymakers visited last year, spending $3.2 billion.

Authorities had been counting on a rise of more than 10 percent this year.

And whether Ranil Wickremesinghe stays in office or former president Mahinda Rajapakse takes his place, foreign earnings will be badly needed.

The Asian Development Bank had predicted the economy would grow by 3.8 percent this year and 4.5 percent in 2019, but all bets are now off. The power vacuum has raised doubts over a $1.5 billion Japanese-funded light rail project and another $480 million of US finance for transport and health, a Wickremesinghe minister, Patali Ranawaka, said last week.

He cited Colombo stock exchange figures showing foreign investors took out nearly $23 million from the market, compared to $35 million over the first nine months of this year.

Rajapakse has said he will cut down on non-essential imports and reduce personal and corporate taxes to encourage local industrialists and companies.

Fitch said however that a protracted political crisis could undermine foreign investor confidence and “make it more challenging” for Colombo to pay its debts. (afp)

Iran vows to ‘proudly bypass’ US sanctions

TEHRAN - Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic republic “will proudly bypass sanctions” by the United States that took effect on Monday targeting the country’s oil and financial sectors.

“I announce that we will proudly bypass your illegal, unjust sanctions because it’s against international regulations,” Rouhani said in a televised speech.

“We are in a situation of economic war, confronting a bullying power. I don’t think that in the history of America, someone has entered the White House who is so against law and international conventions,” he added.

The measures described by

Washington as “the toughest sanctions ever” follow US President Donald Trump’s controversial decision in May to abandon the multination nuclear deal with Tehran.

The latest tranche aim to significantly cut Iran’s oil exports -- which have already fallen by around one million barrels a day since May -- and cut it off from international finance. The United States has given temporary exemptions to eight countries -- including India, Japan and Turkey -- to continue buying oil in a bid to avoid disturbing their economies and global markets.

But US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed to push Iran’s oil sales to zero.

“Watch what we do. Watch as we’ve already taken more crude oil off the market than any time in previous history,” he told CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

Trump’s administration says it wants a new deal with Iran that curbs its interventions around the Middle East and missile programme -- demands that have been flatly rejected by Tehran.

“Constantly they are sending us messages saying ‘Let’s sit and negotiate.’ Negotiations for what?” said Rouhani.

Malaysia is ground zero for the next malaria menace

Vinita Surukan knew the mosquitoes were trouble. They attacked her in swarms, biting through her clothes as she worked to collect rubber tree sap near her village in Sabah, the northern state of Malaysia. The 30-year-old woman described the situation as nearly unbearable. But she needed the job.

There were few alternatives in her village surrounded by fragments of forest reserves and larger swaths of farms, oil palm plantations and rubber tree estates. So she endured until a week of high fever and vomiting forced her to stop.

The night of July 23, Surukan was trying to sleep off her fever when the clinic she visited earlier in the day called with results: Her blood was teeming with malaria parasites, about a million in each drop. Her family rushed her to the town hospital where she received intravenous antimalarial drugs before being transferred to a city hospital equipped to treat severe malaria. The drugs cleared most of the parasites, and the lucky woman was smiling by morning.

Malaria has terrorized humans for millennia, its fevers carved into our earliest writing on ancient Sumerian clay tablets from Mesopotamia. In 2016, four species of human malaria parasites, which are spread by mosquito from person to person, infected more than 210 million people worldwide, killing almost 450,000.

The deadliest species, Plasmodium falciparum, causes most of the infections.

But Surukan’s malaria was different. Hers was not a human malaria parasite. She had P. knowlesi, which infects several monkey species. The same parasite had

recently infected two other people in Surukan’s village — a man who hunts in the forest and a teenager. Surukan suspects that her parasites came from the monkeys that live in the forest bordering the rubber tree estate where she worked. Some villagers quit working there after hearing of Surukan’s illness.

Monkey malaria, discovered in the early 1900s, became a public health concern only in the last 15 years. Before that, scientists thought it was extremely rare for monkey malaria parasites, of which there are at least 30 species, to infect humans.

Yet since 2008, Malaysia has reported more than 15,000 cases of P. knowlesi infection and about 50 deaths. Infections in 2017 alone hit 3,600.

People infected with monkey malaria are found across Southeast Asia near forests with wild monkeys.

In 2017, another species of monkey malaria parasite, P. cynomolgi, was found in five Malaysians and 13 Cambodians. And by 2018, at least 19 travelers to the region, mostly Europeans, had brought monkey malaria back to their home countries.

The rise of monkey malaria in Malaysia is closely tied to rapid deforestation, says Kimberly Fornace, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. After testing blood samples of nearly 2,000 people from areas in Sabah with various levels of deforestation, she found that people staying or working near cut forests were more likely than people living away from forests to have P. knowlesi infections, she and colleagues reported in June in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Riverbanks start to be arranged to make new attractions

People and animals feed their microbes with nitrogen-containing mucus, a new study in mice suggests. The amount of nitrogen in the mucus is determined by how much protein the host eats.

Eating less protein may help curb gut bacteria’s growth

Humans and other animals may have a way to control the growth of gut microbes: Eat less protein.

That’s because protein contains nitrogen. And, it turns out, the amount of nitrogen in the diet of mice governed the growth of bacteria in the animals’ large intestine, researchers report October 29 in Nature Microbiology.

The finding may help researchers learn how to manipulate the types and amounts of people’s gut bacteria, which can contribute to health and disease.

Researchers know that something must limit bacterial growth. “If not, we’d be a few feet deep in E. coli in a couple of days,” says Thomas Schmidt, a microbiologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor not involved in the study.

But so far, scientists have had limited success controlling which microbes inhabit the colon. That may be because researchers were looking at the wrong nutrients, Schmidt says.

Most, including Schmidt, have usually considered carbon — found in fiber, starch and sugars, for example — to be the most important nutrient microbes eat, he says. The new study suggests that other nutrients such as nitrogen may be as important, or even more important, for controlling bacterial growth.

Microbial ecologist Aspen Reese of Duke University knew that in most ecosystems, nitrogen, an essential building block of many biological molecules, is a limited resource.

“Nitrogen is pretty important and it’s pretty hard to come by,” she says.

If the growth of organisms in other ecosystems is limited by the availability of nitrogen, perhaps bacteria in the intestines are also starving for nitrogen, she reasoned.

Reese, currently at Harvard University, and her colleagues started by measuring carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the feces of 30 mammalian species. Herbivores had the highest carbon levels and the lowest nitrogen levels in their feces, the team found. Carbon was also the major nutrient in the feces of carnivores and omnivores, but the meat eaters had more nitrogen than those animals that ate mostly plants.

Still, none of the animals’ poop contained as much nitrogen as labgrown bacteria did, indicating that the

microbes can use more nitrogen when they have it. Since gut bacteria incorporate far more carbon than nitrogen, it means the microbes aren’t getting much nitrogen, which could hold back their growth.

Reese’s team also lowered the amount of protein, thereby decreasing nitrogen, in the diets of lab mice. That reduced the numbers of bacteria in the rodents’ feces, the researchers found.

Together, these results suggest that levels of nitrogen in the gut help determine bacterial growth. It’s unclear whether having more or less bacteria is good or bad, but when certain types of microbes take over, it’s generally bad for health.

To track what happens to nitrogen in food, Reese and her colleagues went a step further, and fed mice chow in which the nitrogen was 15N, a heavier version of the element. The mice absorbed much of the nitrogen in their small intestines where bacteria usually don’t live, leaving little for the bacteria in the colon to eat.

A separate set of experiments revealed how bacteria were getting nitrogen if not directly from food.

Some bacteria in the gut (particularly ones belonging to the Bacteroidetes phylum) ate mucus secreted by the mice’s intestines to get nitrogen. In turn, those bacteria converted the mucus into other nitrogen-containing chemicals other gut bacteria could eat.

The result suggests that hosts may be able to control which microbes grow in the gut by regulating the amount of nitrogen in mucus. Eating foods with low protein content is one way to do that.

What’s more, antibiotics that lowered the amount of bacteria in the gut led mice to secrete less mucus. The animals seemed to keep the extra nitrogen that wasn’t going to feed gut microbes for themselves, allowing the rodents to grow bigger. That finding could help explain why antibiotics promote growth in farm animals.

People shouldn’t change their diets to consume less protein based on any one study alone, says Katrine Whiteson, a microbiome researcher at the University of California, Irvine.

However, she says, “generally eating lots of plants and getting a lot of fiber is likely to be a healthy diet, and that by nature would mean eating less nitrogen.” (IBP/net)

DENPASAR - The Denpasar municipality continues to develop new tourist objects outside the coastal area. One of them is by arranging riverbanks of 11 river flows passing through the city of Denpasar. However, only eight of them have the flow directly emptying out into the sea. The government has arranged five rivers such as the Badung River, Bindu River, Loloan River, Tagtag River and Mati River.

Acting Head of the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency, Nyoman Ngurah Jimmy Sidarta, when met after chairing a recent preparatory arrangement meeting for the riverbank at Bindu River, said the riverbank arrangement program is intended to create a comfortable river walk on riverbank.

Jimmy Sidarta added the arrangement making the rivers clean are also a concept of a river walk (a place to walk along the river). The rivers having been arranged are now used as recreation site and have an economic impact and can educate the public about cleanliness by increasing selfawareness not to make the river a place to dispose of garbage.

Tourist Destination Management Section Head at the Denpasar Tourism Office, Ni Made Sugiani, said that currently tourists have switched to looking for natural tourism through environmental preservation and cultural tourism. This river arrangement is expected to have an impact on the environment and will become one of the tourist attractions. To realize all the objectives, surely the rivers having been arranged into new tourist destinations must be equipped with various tourism supports such as access and identification of potential to be promoted. Besides, the community involvement is the main thing in preserving and maintaining the river tourist destination.

Chief of Ujung hamlet who is also a member of Clean River Community, Gusti Rai Ari Temaja, said that several rivers having been arranged like the Bindu River are expected to be continuously developed to other riverbanks. Thus, all the rivers in Denpasar city are well organized and become a tourist attraction. “This requires a commitment of all components, espe-

cially the community, to contribute to the making of clean river,” he hoped.

Similar opinion was expressed by the Chief of the Tukad Bindu Foundation, Ida Bagus Ari Manik. He said that community participation is the main thing for the success of the program in Bindu River. “Thanks for all who have supported, the World Bank through the PNPM Mandiri, and the Denpasar municipality that always supports the formation of existing community-based effort,” he said.

At Bindu River, there are now several facilities, such as traditional children’s games, Balinese culinary outlets, orchid gardens as well as catfish cultivation with aquaponic.

Head of Water Management Division at the Denpasar Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR), I Gusti Ngurah Putra Sanjaya, revealed that arrangement of the riverbanks is essentially meant to change the image of people that consider the river as a garbage dump. As a result, the river flow is filled with garbage.

With this arrangement, residents no longer throw garbage into the river.

Besides, the community can take advantage of the riverbanks for positive activities. For example, they can have recreation on the riverbanks as well as other interaction activities, such as fishing, jogging, and a place for making selfie which is now becoming a trend among young people.

The river arrangement has been worked on by the PUPR since 2015 started from the Loloan River with a project value of IDR 1.3 billion and handled by CV Pande Nusa. The arrangement continued in 2016 with a project value of IDR 1 billion.

Then, it was resumed in 2017 by working on two rivers, namely the Badung River and Tagtag River. The contract value for Badung River is IDR 5 billion worked on by PT Chandra Dwipa while the Tagtag River with a project value of IDR 1.5 billion was handled by CV Mulia Siwa Jaya.

The arrangement in the Badung River continued in 2018 with a value of IDR 2.6 billion by contractor on behalf of PT Karya Jaya Rahayu and will be completed in December 2018.

Farmer of Marga transforms less productive land into agro-tourism

DRIVEN by the desire to manage less productive paddy fields, one of the Marga farmers, Wayan Dika, succeeded in making agro tourism that is in demand not only by visitors from Tabanan but also those from outside Tabanan. His paddy fields are often dry during dry season so they cannot be planted. Then, it was transformed into a sunflower garden which becomes a suitable place to take pictures or just recreation.

This resident of Batannyuh hamlet, Belayu, Marga, Tabanan, said that at first the making of the agrotourism was driven by his intention to cultivate his family’s unproductive paddy fields when entering dry season.

“Every dry season, it cannot be planted with rice because there is no enough water. So, he can only plant rice during rainy season,” he said on Friday (Nov. 2) Originally he did not think of opening an agrotourism but aimed to plant the land with cut flowers so that the harvest yield can be sold to hotels. One of his friends suggested planting sunflowers. When planting the sunflowers in an area of 1,000 square meters, Dika claimed to learn much from social media. And he started the cultivation four months ago.

Unexpectedly, this effort made many people interested to come. Moreover, when looking at the overlay of sunflowers growing and starting to bloom makes it

suitable into a selfie spot. Through social media, the sunflower park has become well known and crowded with visitors. ’”Actually I have not dared to open agrotourism, but since it has been at issue on social media and many visitors come, I finally decided to make it a tourist destination,” he explained. At the moment, Dika and his friends are managing this agrotourism.

He continued that visitors to the sunflower garden are mostly younger generation who came from Badung, Denpasar to Jembrana. On average, there are 250-500 visitors per day. He said that other than wishing to see the beauty of sunflowers, many visitors came only to capture images of blooming sunflowers in an area of 1,000 square meters or take selfie with sunflower plants. “This garden spreads across the area of 1,000 square meters. Eighty percent of the land is planted with flowers while the remaining is planned for facilities,” he said.

Admission ticket to this agrotourism is only set at IDR 5,000 per person. Result of the ticket sales are used for flower garden maintenance and preparation of facilities. Currently, he is preparing an entrance gate, toilet and ticket counter. In the future, Dika planned to expand its agrotourism land. “There is an additional area of 3,500 square meters. We are not only going to plant sunflowers, but also other types such as chrysanthemum, tuberose and marigold. Father of World’s Ergonomics passes away

DENPASAR - The Father of World’s Ergonomics, Prof. I.B. Adnyana Manuaba, passed away on Sunday (Nov. 4) at 02:00. The deceased died at Prima Medika Hospital at the age of 83 years. He died because of disease complications, namely prostate cancer and diabetes.

This was revealed by the deceased’s first daughter I.A. Sri Astuty Rianawaty when met at the funeral home on Jalan Serma Gede, Denpasar.

Her father had been ill since 2010 and got surgery for prostate cancer. The result was quite good at that time. Until the eighth year, precisely on October 16 the deceased’s hemoglobin suddenly dropped. Then, he was rushed to hospital. Previously, the deceased’s leg also had a wound, but was quickly cleared.

During his lifetime, the deceased gave a lot of moral education to her.

The values remaining to get embedded are discipline, simplicity and hard work. His children were educated not to take advantage of his great reputation to get convenience. Besides, his children were taught to be independent and reach for everything with their own hard work.

Prof. Adnyana Manuaba was the first lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the Udayana University in 1962, when it was newly established. In 1964, the deceased became Chairperson of the Inter-Scholar Conference in Bali and outside Bali. Together with scholars, he discussed about the ideas of Bali’s development, so that a visionary figure was attached to him. When Bali Post was named Suluh Marhaen, the deceased routinely wrote for the rubric of the Banjar Hall. Even though he was educated in the Netherlands, the deceased continued to write.

The deceased also served as Section Head at the Faculty of Medicine of the Udayana University. One of his assistants is Prof. Alex Pangkahila. “All students and assistants are becoming successful figures. He inspired and motivated everyone to excel,” said the son-in-law of the

deceased, Rudynald Baihaqi.

Rudy added the deceased was very active. Even though he was in a wheelchair, the deceased was still actively teaching, testing theses, and fostering Bina Vokalia Bali, a music group pioneered by the deceased and his wife where he served as the advisor.

The deceased was known as the Father of World’s Ergonomics so he had many friends from various countries. He was frequently invited as speaker about ergonomics. “Ergonomics figure at such level is only him alone, while the others are his students,” said Rudy. Beyond medicine, the deceased also pioneered tourism.

When the public hasn’t realized tourism as a field of science, that’s where the deceased pioneered tourism.

Chairman of the Indonesian Public Health Expert Association (IAKMI) of Bali Chapter, Made Kerta Duana, stated the deceased was a lecturer at the doctoral program. Even though he was on a wheelchair, the deceased continued to actively teach and share his knowledge. His loyalty to science need not be doubted.

The deceased can be said to be the figure of the world’s ergonomics in the field of health. “This is his specialty, seeing ergonomics in terms of health,” he added.

Ergonomics is a rare science, even at the international level. The deceased developed the science of ergonomics into a science that arrived in Southeast Asia. So, the deceased was called the Father of World’s Ergonomics. Ergonomics in the field of health then became a reference to other ergonomics such as industrial ergonomics because the deceased also studied ergonomic physiology (work physiology).

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ rocks box offices, if not critics LOS ANGELES - Proving again that audiences matter more than critics, Fox’s Freddy Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” rocked North American box offices this weekend with a solid $50 million take, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

The film’s unexpectedly strong launch put it well ahead of Disney’s new “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” at $20 million, and “Paramount’s “Nobody’s Fool,” with $14 million in estimated ticket sales for the three-day weekend.

“Rhapsody,” with EgyptianAmerican actor Rami Malek starring as the charismatic Mercury, thus logged one of the best openings ever for a music biopic.

The movie has received decidedly mixed reviews, however. Vox. com dismissed it “a crashingly dull movie about ... one of the least drab humans who ever lived,” while the Washington Post called it a “bad movie that works, even when it shouldn’t.” But Malek, a Primetime Emmy winner for his role in TV’s “Mr. Robot,” has won mostly high praise.

While Fox essentially paid the $50 million production cost of “Rhapsody” with the film’s opening-weekend take, Disney was not faring as well with “Nutcracker,” which cost $125 million to make.

The studio hopes the classic Christmas tale will hold on through the holidays, Variety said.

But like “Rhapsody,” the Keira Knightley film got some less-thanglowing reviews. “Tchaikovsky,” said Rolling Stone, “is rolling in his grave.”

Nor did “Nobody’s Fool,” Tyler Perry’s first R-rated comedy, do much better on the critic’s couch, with HollywoodReporter.com deploring its “clumsy, misshapen script.” It stars the popular Tiffany Haddish as a newly paroled woman who tries to help her sister get revenge on a man who deceived her.

In fourth place, Warner Bros.’s “A Star Is Born” earned a solid $11.1 million in its fifth week out.

Grief, anger overflow as families confront a silent Lion Air

JAKARTA - Distraught and angry relatives of those killed when a Lion Air jet crashed last week have confronted the airline’s chief executive during a meeting arranged

by Indonesian officials.

Camila Cabello sweeps MTV Europe awards

“This year has been the best of my life,” the 21-year-old Cuban native said at the event in Bilbao, northern Spain. Cabello had opened the show hosted by American actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld with a rendition of her Latin-influenced “Havana”.

She is fresh from winning prestigious prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards in August -- artist of the year and video of the year -- after her album “Camila” reached the top of US charts in January.

The audio version of “Havana”, which features rapper Young Thug, has had more than 1.3 billion hits on YouTube. The former member of the band Fifth Harmony was also named best pop artist at last year’s

MTV Europe Music Awards.

Cabello had six nominations, followed by five each for singer Ariana Grande and rapper Post Malone and Canadian artist Drake and Britain’s Dua Lipa with four.

With two awards -- for best hip hop artist and best look -- US rapper Nicki Minaj held her own, making two appearances on stage, with French DJ David Guetta and US singer Jason Derulo.

Dua Lipa won best pop artist, while the US group Panic! at the Disco won best alternative artist and Marshmello snagged best electro artist. Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, winner of three prizes in 2017, won best live artist.

US veteran Janet Jackson was crowned a “global icon”, a title previously awarded to U2, Queen, Whitney Houston and Eminem.

Accepting the award, she addressed abused women, saying: “I am one of those women, women who have been gagged both literally and emotionally, women who have been abused, women who have been intimidated, women who have lived in fear.”

She added: “I stand with you.

You are my sisters.”

Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi did not invite Rusdi Kirana to speak during the meeting, which featured relatives and officials overseeing the search effort and investigation. But when relatives demanded he identify himself, Kirana stood and bowed his head.

After the meeting, Kirana left in a hurry, avoiding questions from reporters.

Here’s what we know about the crash and its aftermath: The plane: The Max 8 aircraft was the most recent model in Boeing’s storied 737 family, which is the Chicago-based company’s best-selling plane and a workhorse for the growing ranks of budget airlines. It had clocked about 800 flight hours since it was delivered to Lion Air in August.

Losing contact: Lion Air Flight JT610, on its way to Pangkalpinang, a popular tourist destination a little more than an hour away, lost contact at about 6:33 a.m., 13 minutes after take-off. A little later, authorities confirmed the plane crashed 15 miles from Jakarta’s airport, with 189 people onboard, including its crew. That was 737 Max’s first hull loss, an industry term for an aircraft damaged beyond the point of repair.

Request to return: The Transport Ministry said that the crew requested a return-to-base before disappearing from the radar. It is unclear what the reason was, if at all it was relayed to air

traffic controllers. The captain had completed 6,000 flight hours and the co-pilot had 5,000, according to Lion Air. Prior flight: The night before the accident, pilots flying the same plane from Denpasar, Bali, to Jakarta experienced problems with the sensors used to calculate altitude and speed, an issue that could potentially hold the key to solving the mystery. The instruments were checked by maintenance workers overnight and the plane was cleared to fly, according to Lion Air. Lion Air: Closely held PT Lion Mentari Airlines is owned by Rusdi Kirana, an Indonesian politician, businessman and a former member of President Joko Widodo’s advisory board.

Kirana was also a member of the National Awakening Party, a part of Widodo’s ruling coalition. The budget carrier started operations in 2000 and is among the major customers for Boeing and Airbus SE in Asia. In February 2012, Lion Air placed an

order for 201 of the 737 Max planes and 29 of the extended range 737-900 aircraft in a $22.4 billion deal valued at list price. In 18 years of service, the carrier has suffered seven hull losses.

Suspensions and checks: Following the crash, Indonesia stepped up inspections of aircraft in service and said it would ground those with technical snags that can’t be fixed. Inspectors found two Max 8 planes operated by Lion Air with defects during ramp checks, which have now been rectified. The transport ministry also ordered the suspension of managers in charge of maintenance, engineering, quality control and the engineer who cleared the ill-fated plane for take-off.

Search for wreckage: After scouring shallow waters for days, divers have managed to retrieve only a flight data recorder and it appears damaged from the crash. They are still searching for the cockpit voice recorder. The black boxes, as they are known, are crucial to unraveling

what happened during the final moments of the plane. The search teams have also been fishing out aircraft pieces, body parts of victims and their personal belongings.

Divers also recovered an engine and part of the landing gear of the jet.

Investigation: It may be weeks or months before final details of the cause of the crash are shared by the investigators. Officials from the U.S. National Transport Safety Board, Boeing, General Electric Co. and the Federal Aviation Administration have joined the investigation. The 737 Max 8 is powered by engines made by CFM International, a joint venture between GE and Safran SA. Widening Search: The search teams may be close to finding the plane’s main wreckage and cockpit voice recorder on Saturday, according to the national search agency. Searchers plan to sweep a larger area for the fuselage and the black box, using ROVs, 56 vessels and more than 800 personnel.
