Lukewarm welcome for Taylor Swift to coach Lindsay Lohan stage debut on ‘The Voice’ Associated Press

LONDON — It wasn’t a car crash, but there weren’t fireworks, either. Critics writing in Friday’s papers gave a lukewarm welcome to Lindsay Lohan’s professional stage debut, which followed months of hype and speculation about whether the wayward star was up to the job. “Shock news: Lindsay Lohan can act a bit,” wrote Dominic Maxwell in The Times after the opening night of David Mamet’s Hollywood satire “Speed-the Plow.” The Guardian’s Michael Billington called Lohan’s performance “perfectly creditable.” Lohan seemed tentative at times and had to be prompted once on Thursday’s opening night, but she has undeniable charisma, and some reviewers felt her uncertainty suited the character. Billington said the performance “doesn’t mean Lohan is ready to play Hedda Gabler tomorrow ... (but) she holds the stage with ease and doesn’t let the side down.” Lohan plays the pivotal role of Karen, an office temp whose naivety throws the plans of two ambitious producers into chaos. Karen is the counterpoint to insecure Hollywood players Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox, played by “West Wing” star Richard Schiff and British actor Nigel Lindsay. The production’s direc-

tor — yet another Lindsay — is Lindsay Posner. The male characters are classic Mamet creations, macho and manic. They’re skating frantically on thin ice, desperate not to plunge into the deep chasm below. Karen, who turns out to be more ambitious than she first appears, was played by Madonna in the original 1988 Broadway production, and the role has become a showcase in which young actresses can make a strong impression. Lohan, 28, has said she wants to role to be the start of a new chapter in her roller-coaster career. Since her high point as the star of “Freaky Friday” and “Mean Girls,” Lohan has had six stints in rehab and several brief periods in jail, appeared in her own reality TV show and struggled to get strong film roles. Her most recent movie was the universally panned “The Canyons.” Lohan’s troubled history inevitably flavored the onstage action — especially in a key scene where Karen tells Bobby, “I know what it is to be bad. I’ve been bad.” Schiff said Lohan had faced intense pressure and showed “quantum growth” since the beginning of rehearsals. “That’s how you judge it,” he told the AP. “You judge from where you begin, not where you end ... and she did great.”

NEW YORK — Taylor Swift has plenty of her own hits, and now she’ll be advising young singers on “The Voice” how to do it themselves. The NBC competition show said Friday that the “Shake It Off” singer is serving as a mentor to competitors later this month. She’ll make her first appearance on Oct. 27, giving her some prime-time exposure on the day that her new album is scheduled to be released. On three shows, Swift will advise contestants on vocal technique, stage presence and picking the right songs to fit their strengths. There’s no word on whether Swift will appear after the Nov. 3 show.

Udayana Military Commander:

Bali safe from threats of ISIS Bali Post

DENPASAR - Commander of the IX/Udayana Military Region, Major General Torry Djohar Banguntoro, asserted that Bali was safe from ISIS movement. Nevertheless, the community should remain vigilant against the threat of any radical movement. He conveyed the matter on the sidelines of a national pilgrimage in the Pancaka Tirta Memorial Complex, Tabanan, Friday (Oct 3). “So far, Bali is safe (from ISIS movement). However, we must remain vigilant,” he affirmed. Although there was an issue if ISIS Andrew Estey/Invision/AP, File

would recruit students, he denied it. It was less likely for the ISIS to recruit students because the students in Bali had a strong mental, namely

the mental of Pancasila. “So, they (students) will not be tarnished with it (ISIS),” he said. Nevertheless, he said, the entire community was expected to jointly participate in maintaining the security. Moreover, in the near future it would be implemented the BDF conference which would be attended by a number of countries such as Brunei Darussalam, Timor Leste, the Philippines and Indonesia. “Currently, we are still preparing the security in Nusa Dua,” he

explained. For the security of the BDF, at least 6,000 personnel would be deployed. His party would map out first related to personnel deployment. They would be placed at a number of important points in Bali. “So far, we are still receiving a confirmation that four heads of state will attend the event,” he said accompanied by the Spokesperson the IX/ Udayana Regional Command and other officials.

The BDF implementation was expected to run safely and orderly. Besides, he also hoped the people of Bali to grow more mature again because so far Bali had become an international tourist destination. “Bali is a tourist destination. So, all the domestic and international attentions are pointed to this region. Well, when something happens to Bali the world community will know and it will be very influential for Indonesia,” he added. (kmb21)
