Dolly Parton to be honored in Grammy gala

NEW YORK - Country legend Dolly Parton will be honored at a charity concert ahead of next year’s Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy, which administers the prize, announced Tuesday.

Parton will be the 2019 focus of Musicares, a charitable wing of the Recording Academy that raises money to help musicians in need through the annual starstudded gala.

Parton is among the most prominent women in country

music and one of the Nashville-based industry’s most prolific songwriters. She became such a cultural icon that she is the center of the Dollywood theme park in Tennessee.

Announcing the choice of Parton, the first country artist to be recognized at Musicares, the Recording Academy pointed to her longstanding charitable activities which include working on literacy and assisting Tennessee residents after disasters.

“Dolly Parton has always been and continues to be a courageous trailblazer and indomitable inspi-

ration for creators and artists,” Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in a statement.

Announcing the schedule for next year’s Grammy Week in Los Angeles, Portnow said that Parton would be honored on February 8 with the Grammys two days later.

The awards, the most prestigious handed out by the music industry, shifted this year to New York to mark the Grammys’ 60th edition.

The last Musicares honored Fleetwood Mac, bringing together the notoriously fractious band for a concert with performances by Lorde, Miley Cyrus and Haim attended by former president Bill Clinton. (afp)

Entire tourist island plunges into darkness after major electricity outage

Denpasar - Bali has been left without power following a major electricity outage on Wednesday afternoon. The power went out on the Indonesian tourist island just after 12pm local time.

It outage followed a supply disruption between a coal power plant and a substation. Homes remain without power in Denpasar six hours later and traffic lights are still down in the city.

Local utility authorities are still

investigating the exact cause of the outage as they work to restore power. Expat Roy Suer tweeted: ‘Whilst temporary issues are normal in Bali, this is the biggest I’ve experienced so far’.

He said they had been using

a diesel generator to ‘power the villas and resort’. The blackout is due to an issue with electricity supply from Paiton, East Java to the Kediri substation in Bali’s Tabanan, according to PLN Bali region general manager Nyoman Suwarjoni.

A disruption in the power transfer from Paiton to Kediri is our problem since there is also no power in Paiton, he told bisnis.

The cause of the disturbance in the supply in Paiton is still being investigated, he said.

Residents in Denpasar, Canggu, Kerobokan, Kuta, Jimbaran, and Uluwatu have all reported a loss power over the past several hours.

Fate of bullet shell crafts in Kamasan

Rare and lacking of the orders and regeneration

KAMASAN village in Klungkung district does not only serve as ‘warehouse’ of the Kamasan puppet painting artists. Local people are also very good at the making of bullet casing crafts. Then, what about their progress today?

The craft business is located at Sangging hamlet, not far from Semarapura town. To look for it, there is already a signboard at the end. From the highway, you just need to walk around 250 meters. Then, you will encounter a house with a white wall. It’s large enough and very suitable to be occupied. It is a glimpse about Made Sumerta’s residence.

This 70-year-old man is an expert at crafting bullet casings. The production is carried out directly at his home with very simple equipment. It is just like the making of tray he had been long involved. He utilizes fist, hammers and furnace. However, they are all stored neatly in not too big cart. There no more production and no more high-pitched blows. Sumerta recounts slowly.

For about a year, he does not receive any orders. It is very different from ever before. There were always five to ten orders every month. “Now, it is quiet for long enough time. So, I do not produce it any longer,” he said, recently.

His orders usually come from outside Klungkung.

“In the past, people came and asked to be made such carvings. Now, we still have two pieces left, but no one is looking for them,” he said.

He has been pursuing such work since 1984 starting from trial and error. Armed with his ability to become a craft maker, the result is good and makes him addictive to pursuing. “Such a craft is very rare and cannot be found in all regions,” he said.

Due to sluggish sales, it can no longer be expected as a livelihood. As a result, the craft also becoming the icon of Kamasan has no regeneration. Young people have no interest in the craftwork. Many of them choose to look for other jobs to urban areas. “To my knowledge, there were only six craftsmen and now I am the only one remaining to survive. However, because of being old and there are no orders, I do not make it anymore,” explained the man who has won many awards.

Making such a craft is not difficult for him. One bullet shell with a height of about 70 centimeters and with intricate carvings can be finished about a week.

The selling price is around IDR 1 million. “The higher one will be more expensive,” he concluded. (sos)

Reseidents of Serangan anxious about BTID’s plan to extend canal

DENPASAR - Residents of Serangan are once again anxious about developments on their island. PT Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID) plans to open the canal that previously did not reach to the North Sea of Serangan and people are worried. Local residents of Serangan visited the BTID office on Jalan Tukad Penataran, Serangan, on Tuesday (Sep. 4) to express their concern.

Accompanied by chief of Serangan customary village, Made Sedana, the secretary of customary village, Nyoman Kemu Antara, headman of Serangan, I Wayan Karma and head of South Denpasar subdistrict, I Wayan Budha, the villagers were received by General Manager of PT BTID, Made Sumantra.

During the meeting the village residents expressed their concern following the reception for the circular from BTID related to work on the canal that had previously not reached all the way to the sea. The location in question is used to perform melasti rituals and the nearby area for tourist parking. Fishermen also expressed their concern as this stretch of beach is where they

moor their boats when they are not at sea. If the canal is opened it will be difficult to access this area.

“We have come to the BTID office to deliver the results of a meeting held amongst the residents of Serangan village.

We hope the sub-district head and the BTID can find solutions related to the canal construction so that it will not be carried out to the north coast of Serangan as it will erode our melasti venue”, said Kemu Antara.

Responding to the request, General Manager of BTID, Made Sumantra, revealed that the company intends to extend the canal to the northern sea and ensured that it will not interfere with melasti activities. “Due to the crisis in 1998, the canal was not able to be worked on then”, he added.

His company, he said will curb the canal flow so that it runs 5-6 meters away form the melasti table. “We will continue to work on the opening the canal tomorrow (Sep 5). We have the budget so we will not wait any longer.

Besides the project obeys regulations and the legal basis is clear”, he concluded. (kmb12)

Three villages in Tabanan labeled “rabies red zone”

TABANAN - Three villages in Tabanan are currently lableled as red zones for rabies following the finding of rabies infected animals in these areas. Rabies-infected carrier animals were found in Delod Peken village (Tabanan subdistrict) and Beraban village (Kediri) in 2018 while rabies infected animals in Pujungan village (Pupuan) were last found in 2017.

Head of the Animal Section for the Tabanan Agriculture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wiksuara, explained on Tuesday (Sep. 4) that areas are declared as red zones until a full two years have passed since rabies infected animals have been found there. Which is why Pujungan village in Pupuan is still considered a red zone despite no rabies infected animals having been found there since 2017.

“Both Delod Peken village and Beraban village have had reports

of rabies infected dogs in 2018, so they became labelled as red zones”, he added.

To prevent rabies transmission in rabies-carrier animals -primarily dogs, the Agriculture Agenc routinely conducts mass vaccinations every year. In implementing mass vaccination, added Wisuaksara, they first target red zones, then the yellow zone (areas adjacent to red zones) and then finally green zones (rabies-free).

According to their latest data, the mass vaccination in 2018 reached 41,251 rabies-carrier animals consisting of 40,697 dogs, 544 cats and 10 monkeys. The number of vaccinated rabies-carrier animals has approached the target of the vaccine disbursed by central government amounting to 48,000.

Mass vaccination will continue until the remaining vaccines have been used up. (kmb24)

10 percent of kids now have ADHD

IOWA - More than 10 percent of U.S. kids have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), up from 6 percent 20 years ago, researchers reported Friday.

It’s not clear why, but it’s startling, said Dr. Wei Bao of the University of Iowa, who helped lead the study.

“It is very common now – one in 10 kids,” Bao told NBC News.

The team used surveys covering more than 180,000 children aged 4 to 17 between 1997 and 2016. The surveys were in-person with a parent or guardian and asked whether the child had ever been diagnosed with ADHD. “Over the 20-year period from 1997 to 2016, we found a significant increase in the prevalence of diagnosed ADHD from 1997-1998 to 2015-2016,”

they wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA Open Network.

“We found a consistent upward trend across subgroups by age, sex, race/ethnicity, family income, and geographic regions.”

It’s not clear why. ADHD has a genetic underpinnings. Smoking in pregnancy, low birth weight and other factors also play a role.

“There might be multiple reasons,” Bao said.

“First, we are knowing this condition better, so that we are better at recognizing and diagnosing this condition. Second, the public are more aware of this condition, increasing the possibility of affected kids being screened and diagnosed,” Bao said.

“Third, more infants born early or small (i.e., preterm birth, low birth weight) survive, but they are at higher risk of developing ADHD.” (net)

STDs rise to new record in U.S., CDC report finds

SEXUALLY transmitted diseases are on the rise in America, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, nearly 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017, surpassing the record set in 2016 by more than 200,000, CDC scientists reported Tuesday.

Experts say many factors have contributed to the rapid rise, though the biggest one may be less frequent condom use. It’s less clear whether dating apps, like Tinder, have contributed in some way to the spread of STDs, though some researchers think they have.

“We have seen steep and sustained increases over the last five years,” said Dr. Gail Bolan, director of the Division of STD Prevention at the CDC. “Usually there are ebbs and flows, but this sustained increase is very concerning. We haven’t seen anything like this for two decades.”

In the past, the majority of syphilis infections were seen in gay men, bisexual men and other men who have sex with men, Bolan told NBC News. “More recently, there have been increases among heterosexual men and women, including among pregnant women, which means we’re starting to see these infections in their babies.”

Bolan and others suspect that newer drugs that have made HIV less lethal as well as one that lowers the risk of being infected could have contributed to declines in condom use. An Australian study that followed nearly 17,000 gay and bisexual men before and after a campaign to promote pre-exposure prophylaxis, the use of drugs that protect against HIV infection, found that condom use had fallen dramatically. Before the campaign,

46 percent of the men studied were using condoms; after, only 31 percent were.

“Certainly we’ve known since lifesaving HIV medications became available in the 2000s, things changed,” Bolan said. “Added to that was the very important advance for HIV prevention. But those tools don’t prevent STDs. Now we’re seeing declining use of condoms not just in gay and bisexual men, but also in heterosexuals.”

CDC researchers found that gonorrhea diagnoses increased by 67 percent — from 333,004 to 555,608 — in just five years. The sharpest increase was in men, in whom cases nearly doubled, going from 169,130 in 2013 to 322,169 in 2017. Though increases were also seen in women, they weren’t quite as dramatic, rising 18 percent over the same time period.

Another factor driving the skyrocketing numbers of STD cases may be a decline in funding for state and local agencies working on prevention, said Michael Fraser, executive director of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

“We’ve seen a tremendous increase in many areas primarily due to the eroding public health infrastructure,” he said. “The lack of funding at the state and local level to really invest in prevention work is not just about medications, it’s about disease investigators who meet with the individual who is infected and talk about their behavior and do contact tracing to try to prevent the future spread.”

The United States “continues to have the highest STD rates in the industrialized world,” said David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors. (net)

DENPASAR - The import of Bali province in July 2018 valued at USD 22 million. It has doubled compared to June 2018. Meanwhile, by year of year (July 2018 compared to July 2017) the imports of Bali province rose 74.76 percent.

However, the imports in July 2018 were poised by the exports worth USD 46 million. So, the Bali’s trade balance remains positive.

Distribution Statistics Division Head at the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), I Gede Nyoman Subadri, explained that when compared to June 2018, Bali’s imports doubled. It was triggered by an increase in imports of essential oils from Hong Kong. In addition, Bali also imported goods from the United States, Australia and Timor Leste in the form of vanilla. Country origin of the import is dominated by Hong Kong (44.95 percent), the United States (20.55 percent) and Australia (8.60 percent).

Compared to July 2017, the import of Bali rose 74.76 percent. It happened because the imports from the United States increased 135.53 percent, Australia (192.54 percent) and Italy. “From Italy, our import increased hundreds of percent in the form of machinery and spare parts,” he said.

The most imported commodities are essential oils, cosmetics, fragrances, leather goods, bells and

watches. According to him, essential oils are imported for fragrancemaking raw materials. After having added-value, they are re-exported.

However, he did not know for sure where the essential oil is absorbed and what it is used for.

Bali’s trade balance is poised by export. In July 2018, the Bali’s export value reached USD 46 million. In terms of its country of destination, the largest exports of Bali are to the United States reaching 31 percent and then resumed with Singapore, Japan and Australia.

Compared to June 2018 amounting to USD 33.34 million, the exports in July 2018 experienced an increase of 39.28 percent. By yoy, the export of Bali only increased 13.05 percent.

Bali has the maritime wealth, so the dominant commodities exported in July 2018 were fish and shrimp reaching 24.35 percent as well as jewelry and apparel. The commodities exported to Australia included fish, shrimp, tuna and its processed products, home furnishings, and wood furniture. Besides, there is a new product to be exported there namely fishing vessels to China. The quite high contributors are apparel and knitwear to the United States. Hong Kong is also the largest export destination in the form of leather goods, while jewelry is mostly exported to Singapore. (kmb42)

Upon the verdict, the defendant accompanied by his attorney, Dodi Arta Kariawan, immediately stated to accept it. Meanwhile, Public Prosecutor Wayan Meret stated that he still needs to think it over.

The judge’s decision was lower than the prosecutor’s demands. Previously, the prosecutor from the Bali

Prosecutor’s Office had the defendant sentenced to 15 years in prison. Aside from physical punishment, the defendant must also pay a fine worth IDR 1 billion or a subsidiary punishment of one-year imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the panel of judges in his decision stated the defendant Amirul had been proved legally and convincingly guilty of having committed a crime of conspiracy and narcotics precursor. He has no rights or goes up against the law of producing, importing, exporting or distributing narcotics of the first class in the form of non-plant and has the weight of more than 5 grams.

The defendant was charged with the first alternative indictment by the prosecutor, where the defendant was charged under Article 113 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) of the Republic of Indonesia’s Law No.35/2009 concerning narcotics. (kmb37)

DENPASAR - Laboratory of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) tested the samples of mushroom chips and the results were positive to contain psilocin (first class narcotics). The BNNP Bali along with the staff had anticipated the mushroom chips from circulating because it is very dangerous.

DHAKA - Motorcyclists without helmets will be barred from buying fuel at filling stations in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka, police said.

The move is part of efforts to quell tensions after the city of nearly 20 million people was rocked by angry protests about poor road safety last month.

“The petrol pumps (owners)

have already been told not to sell fuel to any motor bikers without helmets,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said on Tuesday. He added that a maximum of two people were

allowed on a bike and pillion passengers must also wear a helmet.

Protests across Dhaka and other cities in August saw tens of thousands of teenage school pupils and students block the streets to demand better road safety on Bangladesh’s chaotic and corruptionridden transport network, after a speeding bus killed two teenage

pedestrians. In the wake of the protests, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet approved a new transport law stipulating harsher punishments for offenders.

Bangladeshi highways are some of the deadliest in the region with around 12,000 dying in road accidents every year, according to a private group that monitors ac-

cidents.

In the Eid al Adha holidays last month, 259 people were killed and 960 people were injured in 237 road accidents in the space of 13 days.

In Dhaka, like elsewhere in Asia, more than two people riding a motorbike or a moped is a common sight. Many times, none of them wear helmets. (afp)

Indian girl aged nine gang-raped and murdered

Sexual violence is rife in India with nearly 40,000 rape cases reported in 2016, which activists say is the tip of the iceberg as most cases go unreported.

SRINAGAR - Indian police have arrested a woman and four others after her nine-year-old stepdaughter was allegedly gangraped, murdered and mutilated, in the latest horrific crime to shock the country.

The child’s decomposed body was found on Tuesday hidden behind bushes about a kilometre from her home in the Baramulla district of Indian-administered Kashmir, police said.

Her father had reported her missing 12 days earlier.

Police said the woman, aged 36,

was jealous of her stepdaughter and of her husband’s second wife, and on August 24 took the girl to a forested area.

There she allegedly directed her own 14-year-old son and his two teenage friends, aged 14 and 19, to take turns in raping the child.

The stepmother is accused of then strangling the girl while her son hit the child on the head with an axe. His friend brought vehicle battery acid from home and sprinkled it on the body while another friend gouged out her eyes before dumping the corpse in the bushes.

A 28-year-old man has also been arrested over the case.

“Physical condition and preliminary forensic analysis of dead body substantiated all these facts,” said a police statement issued on Tuesday.

Local police Superintendent Imtiyaz Hussain told AFP the teenage offenders have confessed to the crime and separately corroborated the facts during questioning.

“They will be sent to a juvenile home and dealt with according to the state’s juvenile law,” Hussain said. (afp)

LONDON - The economies of Italy and Spain faltered over the summer months and are now growing at their slowest rates in years, according to a closely watched survey of the 19-country eurozone.

Daniel Harenberg, a senior economist at Oxford Economics, said Wednesday’s survey highlights again that the business cycles in the eurozone are “not perfectly in sync,” with Italy potentially more affected by a slowdown in export orders in Germany.

“This bears the potential to heighten political tensions between the Italian government and European institutions once the ECB stops its quantitative easing towards the end of the year,” he said. (ap)

With Brexit due March 29, 2019, Carney confirmed he has been in talks with Britain’s Treasury chief, Philip Hammond, about extending his tenure again. Concerns have been raised recently that the Treasury had yet to open up the appointment process to replace Carney.

Carney, who is reportedly also interested in returning to Canadian politics, has said the government will announce details “in due course.” Media reports have suggested his tenure may be extended by about a year or two.

“The sooner the government provides clarity, the better,” said Nicky Morgan, a Conservative lawmaker who chairs the Treasury Committee to which Carney was addressing Tuesday. “Any extension to Carney’s term should not be used to delay succession planning.”

Many backers of Brexit have accused Carney of taking sides during the Brexit referendum campaign, of being a leading proponent of socalled “Project Fear” when warning of the economic consequences of a vote to leave the EU. But many in the financial markets have been calling on Carney to stay longer to help reduce uncertainty.

The British government’s discussions with the EU have struggled to make progress over the past few months, and Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered a series of resignations from her cabinet, including those of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary and David Davis as Brexit secretary.

Her latest proposals for Brexit involve Britain maintaining many EU rules so British firms can keep trading easily in the European single market. Her plan has run into resistance from both the EU and within May’s Conservative Party.

With the opposition Labour Party also seemingly split over how to approach Brexit, concerns have risen that Britain will end up crashing out of the EU with no deal and no transition period after Brexit day

to help smooth the process.

Though Carney said last month that the risks of a no-deal Brexit were “uncomfortably high,” he said Tuesday that an agreement was the “more likely” scenario.

“The negotiations are getting to a critical stage and there’s still a wide range of views of potential outcomes,” he said.

Companies appear to be expecting a smooth exit, with only 20 percent of firms having contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit, Carney noted. Reaching a Brexit deal would likely boost business investment, jobs and consumer confidence, he said.

“There’s upside to this economy.” Last month, the Bank of England raised its main interest rate by a quarter point to 0.75 percent to contain inflation, which has risen above the 2 percent target. Prices have risen largely as a result of a 15-percent fall in the pound in the wake of the Brexit vote, from around $1.50.

Following Carney’s comments, the pound was down 0.5 percent at $1.2812, amid a broad-based increase in the dollar. (ap)

It main index of business activity across the eurozone’s manufacturing and services — called the composite purchasing managers’ index — rose to 54.5 points in August from 54.3 the previous month. Anything above 50 indicates expansion and August’s level points to quarterly economic growth of around 0.4 percent, in line with the second-quarter outcome.

Much of the growth, however, was due to Germany, the region’s biggest economy, and to a lesser extent France.

Chris Williamson, the firm’s chief business economist, cautioned about developments in Italy and Spain, with the former “on course for its weakest expansion for nearly two years.” For Spain, he said, growth could be even the “worst for almost five years.”

Wayang Wong of Tejakula Wins UNESCO Award

The Wayang Wong or human puppet of Tejakula, that takes its storyline form the Ramayana epic and is perfromed in Old Javanese, is becoming incresingly well-known internationally.

During the opening of the fourth annual Buleleng Festival, the Director General of Culture for the Ministry of Education and Culture -through the government of Buleleng, awarded the the wayang wong troupe with a certificate of appreciation for the establishment Tejakula’s wayang wong as world intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. The younger geneation is now expected to help preserve this art form in the face of the challenges of globilization.

Representing the Village of Tejakula, community leader and wayang wong perfromer Gede Komang was recived the certificate from the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana. Komang said that communities in the region are very much dedicated to protecting the sacred value of the wayang wong masks. The clan Temple of Tejakula Village houses some 75 masks, but only some of these masks can be displayed in “The original mask may not be taken out of the temple grounds and should only be used in performances at the clan temple of Tejakula village. The temple’s supporting devotee are dedicated to maintaining the sanctity of the wayang wong mask” he said.

Actually, continued Gede Komang, there are quite a lot of travelers who are attracted to visit Tejakula village and see the wayang wong show. However, since the wayang wong mask the temple cannot be

taken outside the temple grounds, tejakula’s community leader finally decided to create replicas of the mask so that the wayang wong could be perfromed elsewhere. “The duplicates are allowed to be taken out of the village. In the 1970s, the wayang wong mask duplicates were used in performances at home and overseas making the wayang wong more widely known in Asian and European countries”, he added.

Gede Komang said that wayang wong becomae known in many countries thanks to the efforst of famous leaders like Nyoman Tusan and Made Bandem, Jero Bendesa and Santika. Gede Komang himself participated in devotional work by dancing at Tejakula village. He was then appointed as advisor to the Teja Murti wayang wong troupe –the only one in his village.

So far there have been no difficulties in dancing the wayang wong. “Indeed, our friends have

no difficulty dancing the wayang wong. However, they do have some trouble chanting the kekawin or kidung songs of the Ramayana storyline because these Balinese songs use the Old Javanese language that they do not understand.

The wayang wong of Tejakula was originally devellpoed in the seventeenth century and had to be perfromed on Umanis Galungan”, explained Gede Komang.

According to Gede Komang, the wayang wong players receive divine revelations through generations allwoign the dance to be preserved into the next generation.

It is said that if any residents does not comply with the faith or are not willing to perform it, they would often experience pain or difficulty in life. “People who are not descendants of wayang wong dancers are also given the opportunity to learn to dance the wayang wong” added he said. (kmb)

Babakan hamlet in Sukawati, Gianyar, is known for having many puppeteers and this hamlet located adjacent to the Sukawati Art Market is also famous as being home to many art maestros. Wayan Wija is one puppeteer whose name is familiar to art lovers from his distinct telling fhte storu of Tantri.

Wayan Nartha and Nyoman Granyam are two other well known pupeterrs from Bebakan hamlet.

Granyam became famous after President Soekarna invited him to stage a puppet show at the Ubud Palace in 1962. There are many other puppeteers from this hamlet who are well known in the area and in many other parts of Bali and beyond.

I Ketut Sudiana, who is a descendant of a Nyoman Nartha, explained that Babakan is famous as a puppet art village. From time immemorial puppeteers have thrived here. Currently there are approximately 20 third generation puppeteers in Babakan hamlet who perform various types of puppet shows. “Babakan Sukawati became a center of art during the kingdom era”, he said.

The people of Babakan have remained highly creative developing all manner of traditional puppets with Wayan Madra being a famous example. Many foreign scholars come to Babakan to research Balinese puppets, explained this lecturer from the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar.

Babakan village is also famous for silver handicrafts, drawing many buyers. The late Wayan Sobrat was a famous bade tower (used to haul body in cremation ceremony) and lion artist and his skills have been passed down to his children who still make these beautiful sculptures.

Most interestingly, the Baba-

kan community is still diligent in preserving their palm-leaf manuscripts as a source of inspiration for their performing arts. The legacy of the palm-leaf manuscript is also varied. “The manuscripts are a very useful reference for puppeteers for the story material in puppet performances. Sometimes specific stories are requested so they must be prepared carefully”, said Sudiana.

Today, there are many young creative puppeteer, explained this winner of the Bali Little Puppeteer 1983, because the arte environment of the hamlet is conducive to creativity. He hiself became a puppeteer because he was encouraged by his family, like when he had to perform in the Bali Little Puppeteer Festival to represent Gianyar district. In the competition held by Cultural Development and Advisory Council (Listibya), this Gianyar-born man on March 29, 1970 won first place. From then on, he became a famous child puppeteer who received many requests to perform.

At Sukawati village, there are many puppeteers with different specific skills. Puppeteers must pay attention to rhetoric, the dialogue of the puppets when arguing and dancing technique of the puppets is also very important. There are many young puppeteers today even outside of Sukawati who are enticed by the many arts including in this one art form.

In addition to actively performing and making puppets, Sudiana also teaches in the Puppetry Department of the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar. “In the past, most puppet craftsmen were also a puppeteers. Today, many art lovers also become craftsmen of puppets”, he concluded. (kmb)

Amid ‘bloodbath’ fears, US warns Assad against using chemical weapons

WASHINGTON - With the United Nations warning of a potential “bloodbath” in Syria’s Idlib province, the United States warned President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday it would respond “swiftly and appropriately” if he uses chemical weapons against his own people.

As Syrian troops massed near the northwestern region of nearly three million people, the last major rebel stronghold, renewed Russian airstrikes killed at least nine civilians, according to a violence monitor.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said the UN Security Council would meet on Friday to discuss the precarious situation in the province.

Rebel-backer Turkey has held several rounds of talks with regime ally Russia aimed at averting an assault on Idlib, but Moscow dubbed the region a “pocket of terrorism.”

The UN’s Syria peace envoy Staffan de Mistura said Russia and Turkey held “the key for (a) soft solution to the Idlib issue” and urged them to help avert a humanitarian disaster.

De Mistura pointed to press reports indicating that Syria has set a September 10 deadline for finding a solution before it begins an all-out offensive on the province.

“Let’s try to avoid that the last probably major battle of the Syrian territorial conflict... ends in a bloodbath,” De Mistura told reporters in Geneva.

US President Donald Trump warned Assad on Monday not to “recklessly attack” Idlib and the White House strongly cautioned him Tuesday against using chemical weapons.

“Such an attack would be a reckless escalation of an already tragic conflict and would risk the lives of

hundreds of thousands of people,” said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, warning the US and its allies “will respond swiftly and appropriately.”

Haley’s own warning focused more explicitly on the prospect of a chemical attack.

“If they want to continue to go the route of taking over Syria, they can do that, but they cannot do it with chemical weapons,” she said.

- ‘Pocket of terrorism’ -

De Mistura urged Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to urgently speak on the phone even before they are set to meet with their Iranian counterpart in Tehran on Friday.

His appeal came after Russian warplanes resumed airstrikes on Idlib after a 22-day pause.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on sources in Syria for its reports, said at least nine civilians, including five children from the same family, were killed in the raids, while 10 people were wounded.

Seized from government forces in 2015, Idlib and adjacent areas form the last major chunk of territory still in rebel hands.

Many of the residents are rebels and civilians who were bussed out of other areas as they came back under Syrian regime control.

Tuesday’s bombardment hit several areas held by the jihadist-led Hayat Tahrir al-Sham alliance, among them the large town of Jisr al-Shughur, but also areas held by rival Turkish-backed rebels, including the town of Ariha.

The Syrian military has been deploying reinforcements to the zone for more than a month, and Russia has stepped up its rhetoric. (afp)

GENEVA - UN investigators on Wednesday warned that crimes against humanity and other serious rights violations were continuing unabated in Burundi, blaming in part President Pierre Nkurunziza’s repeated calls to hatred and violence.

In its first report last year, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi said it had “reasonable grounds to believe” that government was committing crimes against humanity.

On Wednesday, it said such crimes were still ongoing, citing summary executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture and sexual violence.

“Serious human rights violations, including some which constitute crimes against humanity, have continued to be committed in Burundi, in 2017 and 2018,” the commission said as it released a fresh report on the situation in the tiny east African nation.

“Some practices, such as the disposal of bodies or operating at night, tend to make these violations less visible. Nevertheless, they are still real,” head of the commission Doudou Diene said in a statement.

Burundi plunged into crisis in 2015 after Nkurunziza sought a fiercely contested third term in office that his opponents said was unconstitutional.

Turmoil since then has killed at least 1,200 people, and has forced 400,000 to flee their homes and triggered an investigation by the International Criminal Court.

“Human rights violations documented by the Commission of Inquiry were aided by recurring calls

for hatred and violence, including by the President of the Republic,” the commission said Wednesday, saying such calls “took place in a general context of impunity.”

The UN investigators said they had “established a list of alleged perpetrators of crimes against humanity.”

They said they would make the list “available to any organ or jurisdiction tasked with carrying out independent and credible investigations on human rights violations and abuses committed in Burundi and which will guarantee the safety of the witnesses.”

Diene stressed that the Burundian judicial system itself “has neither the will nor the capacity to establish who is responsible and to prosecute perpetrators of violations.”

“The judiciary has become an instrument of repression used by the executive against any form of protest or opposition.”

The commission did not name the suspected perpetrators, but has said members of the country’s National Intelligence Service, the police, military officials and members of the ruling party’s youth league, the Imbonerakure were behind many of the worst violations.

It lamented the increasing strength of the Imbonerakure and decried the constantly shrinking of democratic space in the country.

“The control exercised over Burundians by the ruling power and the Imbonerakure increased significantly and is felt in all aspects of daily life,” commission member Francoise Hampson said in the statement. (afp)

A district in Indonesia’s deeply Islamic Aceh province has banned men and women from dining together unless they are married or related, an official said Wednesday, saying it would help women be “more well behaved”.

Aceh -- the only region in the world’s most populous Muslim majority country that imposes Islamic law -- has drawn fire in the past for putting moral restrictions on women.

It also attracted global condemnation for publicly whipping people found guilty of a range of offences including homosexuality, gambling and drinking alcohol.

Under the latest Islamic regulation, women in Bireuen district on Sumatra island will not be able to share a table with men at restaurants and coffee shops unless they are accompanied by their husband or a close male relative.

Co-workers on their lunch break would also be forbidden from sharing a meal. “The objective is to protect women’s dignity

so they will feel more comfortable, more at ease, more well behaved and will not do anything that violates sharia (Islamic law),” local head of the local sharia agency Jufliwan, who like many Indonesians has only one name, told AFP on Wednesday.

Another part of the directive – signed by the district head on August 5 -- said women who were alone or not with family should not be served at restaurants and cafés after 9:00 pm.

Authorities say it will be up to restaurateurs to enforce the regulation, although offenders will not be punished. Three years ago provincial capital Banda Aceh banned unaccompanied women from entertainment venues like cafes and sports halls after 11:00 pm.

In 2013, Lhokseumawe city in Sumatra’s north ordered women to sit “side-saddle” on motorbikes with their legs dangling off to one side. The mayor at the time said straddling male drivers on motorbikes was “improper”. (afp)

rates prompted investors to snap up dollar-denominated assets in search of better returns.

Indonesia’s currency has not been this weak since it was embroiled in a region-wide financial crisis that sparked economic ruin and street protests that led to the downfall of late dictator Suharto in 1998.

On Tuesday, Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan said that energy projects representing nearly half of President Joko Widodo’s signature 35,000 gigawatt electricity programme will either be postponed or restructured. The move could save some $8-10 billion in import costs, he added.

The delayed power projects -- reportedly worth some $25 billion -- are heavily reliant on imported components which become more expensive when Indonesia’s currency is weak.

The move is part of a broader bid to cut imports, including some consumer goods, to tackle a growing deficit in the current account, a broad measure of Indonesia’s trade with the rest of the world.

Jakarta has also announced plans to clamp down on currency speculators and ordered mining firms to repatriate their export earnings to beef up the country’s dollar supply.

The central bank has hiked interest rates several times this year to prop up the rupiah, which has lost about 10 percent since January. (afp)

Golovkin ready to ‘punish’ Alvarez in rematch

LOS ANGELES - Gennady Golovkin ramped up his war of words with middleweight rival Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Tuesday, vowing to “punish” the Mexican slugger in their upcoming Las Vegas rematch.

Unbeaten world middleweight king Golovkin will face off with Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena on September 15, a year after their first encounter ended in a hotly contested draw.

A rematch planned for May was later cancelled when Alvarez failed a drug test, blaming contaminated meat in his native Mexico after testing positive for the stimulant clenbuterol. Relations between the two camps have been marked by animosity ever since Alvarez’s failed test, with Golovkin accusing his rival of being a drugs cheat.

Alvarez’s trainer Chepo Reynoso raised the temperature for the rematch this week after describing Golovkin as a “donkey” who would be easy to beat. “Golovkin is a donkey who doesn’t think,” Reynoso said.

“He doesn’t have a thought in his head. He’s a man that comes forward throwing the same punches. There’s not much that we need to change.”

Asked to comment on Reynoso’s remarks in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Golovkin accused Alvarez of “lacking class.”

“I don’t even want to go to that level. It just shows a lack of class, low class, lack of upbringing, lack of intelligence,” he said.

“It just shows how they behave. I’ve never said anything so low about anybody.” The barbs from the Alvarez camp have left Golovkin more determined than ever to retain his titles.

“I want to punish him for all the bad things him and his team have done,” Golovkin said. “I want to put him down to size.”

Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez meanwhile denied his fighter was “angry” or risked losing his composure.

“He’s not angry,” Sanchez said. “He’s got a purpose in the gym and he’s got a purpose of what he wants to do inside the ring.

“Canelo’s done some things that he feels he needs to pay for, and he’ll do that in the ring. In the gym, it’s just another day training in the gym.” (afp)

NEW YORK - Defending champion Rafael Nadal survived an epic US Open quarter-final confrontation to defeat battling ninth seed Dominic Thiem 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/5) and reach the semi-finals for the seventh time.

In a gripping 4-hour 49-minute contest which concluded at 2.04 a.m. on Wednesday, world number one Nadal won through to keep his bid for a fourth title in New York and 18th Grand Slam crown on track. However, the 32-year-old was fortunate to triumph on another hot and humid night at Flushing Meadows, 24 hours after Roger Federer had been dumped out of the tournament by John Millman.

After suffering a first set ‘bagel’, Nadal had to battle back from breaks in the third and fourth sets before seeing off the first top 20

player he had faced at the US Open since 2013.

“I suffered, that’s the right word,” said Nadal after playing his longest ever match at the tournament.

“I said to Dominic I am sorry.

He’s a great guy, a close friend who will have many more opportunities to win the big titles.”

Nadal had defeated Thiem in the Roland Garros final in June but this was their first meeting away from a clay court.

“He has a great attitude and is a great fighter,” added Nadal.

In a dramatic final set, Nadal saw five break points come and go before Thiem went long with a smash on the first match point.

It was his 58th unforced error on a night when he sent down 18 aces and fired 74 winners.

“It’s going to be stuck in my mind forever. Forever I’m going to remember this match, for sure,” said Thiem after his first ever hard court match against Nadal.

“Tennis is cruel sometimes because I think this match didn’t really deserve a loser. But there has to be one.”

The semi-final will pit Nadal against third seed and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro for the second successive Grand Slam.

At Wimbledon, Nadal came back from two sets to one down to win in five in a quarter-final which stretched to almost five hours.

Thiem broke three times in a 24minute first set on Tuesday, handing Nadal just his third ‘bagel’ at a Grand Slam. The top seed won just seven points in the opener. (afp)

Pogba always welcome at Barca - Suarez Luis Suarez believes Paul Pogba should be challenging for more trophies than he is at Manchester United and would always be welcome at Barcelona.

Pogba has endured a turbulent two years since returning to Old Trafford for a then world-record fee of 105 million euros ($121.7) and his relationship with coach Jose Mourinho has become strained.

The 25-year-old rediscovered his best form away from his club, for France in the summer, when he inspired Les Bleus to World Cup glory in Russia, beating Uruguay and Suarez on the way.

But since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, United have failed to go close in either the Premier League or Champions League, while Barca have won three La Ligas in that time and the Champions League once.

“Pogba is an elite player who has won everything and we always want to have the best,” Suarez told RAC1 on Tuesday.

“He is a player that has a lot of quality and who is one of the key players at United, and I think he would like to compete for more than he is competing for now. “But that’s how it is, he does not belong to Barcelona but he will always be welcome.”

One Champions League crown in five years, however, represents a disappointing return for Barca, particularly while rivals Real Madrid have dominated the tournament, winning it three times in a row.

England set for Newcastle date with Italy England are set to play their first Test match in Newcastle after confirming their plans for the build-up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Eddie Jones’ side will face Italy at St James’ Park on September 6, 2019. It is the first time since October 2015 that England have played a home Test away from Twickenham.

That was the 2015 World Cup dead rubber with Uruguay at the Etihad Stadium. The Italy match is one of four pre-World Cup warmup matches scheduled by England, who will play Wales twice, on August 11 at Twickenham and six days later in Cardiff, and Ireland at Twickenham on August 24.

St James’ Park is usually the home of Premier League football team Newcastle, but hosted matches in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. England have played home Tests at Old Trafford, Manchester, in 1997 against New Zealand and 2009 against Argentina, and in Huddersfield, when Italy and Holland were the opponents in 1998.

LOS ANGELES - Gennady Golovkin ramped up his war of words with middleweight rival Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Tuesday, vowing to “punish” the Mexican slugger in their upcoming Las Vegas rematch.

Unbeaten world middleweight king Golovkin will face off with Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena on September 15, a year after their first encounter ended in a hotly contested draw.

A rematch planned for May was later cancelled when Alvarez failed a drug test, blaming contaminated meat in his native Mexico after testing positive for the stimulant clenbuterol. Relations between the two camps have been marked by animosity ever since Alvarez’s failed test, with Golovkin accusing his rival of being a drugs cheat.

Alvarez’s trainer Chepo Reynoso raised the temperature for the rematch this week after describing Golovkin as a “donkey” who would be easy to beat. “Golovkin is a donkey who doesn’t think,” Reynoso said.

“He doesn’t have a thought in his head. He’s a man that comes forward throwing the same punches. There’s not much that we need to change.”

Asked to comment on Reynoso’s remarks in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Golovkin accused Alvarez of “lacking class.”

“I don’t even want to go to that level. It just shows a lack of class, low class, lack of upbringing, lack of intelligence,” he said.

“It just shows how they behave. I’ve never said anything so low about anybody.” The barbs from the Alvarez camp have left Golovkin more determined than ever to retain his titles.

“I want to punish him for all the bad things him and his team have done,” Golovkin said. “I want to put him down to size.”

Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez meanwhile denied his fighter was “angry” or risked losing his composure.

“He’s not angry,” Sanchez said. “He’s got a purpose in the gym and he’s got a purpose of what he wants to do inside the ring.

“Canelo’s done some things that he feels he needs to pay for, and he’ll do that in the ring. In the gym, it’s just another day training in the gym.” (afp)

NEW YORK - Defending champion Rafael Nadal survived an epic US Open quarter-final confrontation to defeat battling ninth seed Dominic Thiem 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/5) and reach the semi-finals for the seventh time.

In a gripping 4-hour 49-minute contest which concluded at 2.04 a.m. on Wednesday, world number one Nadal won through to keep his bid for a fourth title in New York and 18th Grand Slam crown on track. However, the 32-year-old was fortunate to triumph on another hot and humid night at Flushing Meadows, 24 hours after Roger Federer had been dumped out of the tournament by John Millman.

After suffering a first set ‘bagel’, Nadal had to battle back from breaks in the third and fourth sets before seeing off the first top 20

player he had faced at the US Open since 2013.

“I suffered, that’s the right word,” said Nadal after playing his longest ever match at the tournament.

“I said to Dominic I am sorry.

He’s a great guy, a close friend who will have many more opportunities to win the big titles.”

Nadal had defeated Thiem in the Roland Garros final in June but this was their first meeting away from a clay court.

“He has a great attitude and is a great fighter,” added Nadal.

In a dramatic final set, Nadal saw five break points come and go before Thiem went long with a smash on the first match point.

It was his 58th unforced error on a night when he sent down 18 aces and fired 74 winners.

“It’s going to be stuck in my mind forever. Forever I’m going to remember this match, for sure,” said Thiem after his first ever hard court match against Nadal.

“Tennis is cruel sometimes because I think this match didn’t really deserve a loser. But there has to be one.”

The semi-final will pit Nadal against third seed and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro for the second successive Grand Slam.

At Wimbledon, Nadal came back from two sets to one down to win in five in a quarter-final which stretched to almost five hours.

Thiem broke three times in a 24minute first set on Tuesday, handing Nadal just his third ‘bagel’ at a Grand Slam. The top seed won just seven points in the opener. (afp)

Amid ‘bloodbath’ fears, US warns Assad against using chemical weapons

WASHINGTON - With the United Nations warning of a potential “bloodbath” in Syria’s Idlib province, the United States warned President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday it would respond “swiftly and appropriately” if he uses chemical weapons against his own people.

As Syrian troops massed near the northwestern region of nearly three million people, the last major rebel stronghold, renewed Russian airstrikes killed at least nine civilians, according to a violence monitor.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said the UN Security Council would meet on Friday to discuss the precarious situation in the province.

Rebel-backer Turkey has held several rounds of talks with regime ally Russia aimed at averting an assault on Idlib, but Moscow dubbed the region a “pocket of terrorism.”

The UN’s Syria peace envoy Staffan de Mistura said Russia and Turkey held “the key for (a) soft solution to the Idlib issue” and urged them to help avert a humanitarian disaster.

De Mistura pointed to press reports indicating that Syria has set a September 10 deadline for finding a solution before it begins an all-out offensive on the province.

“Let’s try to avoid that the last probably major battle of the Syrian territorial conflict... ends in a bloodbath,” De Mistura told reporters in Geneva.

US President Donald Trump warned Assad on Monday not to “recklessly attack” Idlib and the White House strongly cautioned him Tuesday against using chemical weapons.

“Such an attack would be a reckless escalation of an already tragic conflict and would risk the lives of

hundreds of thousands of people,” said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, warning the US and its allies “will respond swiftly and appropriately.”

Haley’s own warning focused more explicitly on the prospect of a chemical attack.

“If they want to continue to go the route of taking over Syria, they can do that, but they cannot do it with chemical weapons,” she said.

- ‘Pocket of terrorism’ -

De Mistura urged Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to urgently speak on the phone even before they are set to meet with their Iranian counterpart in Tehran on Friday.

His appeal came after Russian warplanes resumed airstrikes on Idlib after a 22-day pause.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on sources in Syria for its reports, said at least nine civilians, including five children from the same family, were killed in the raids, while 10 people were wounded.

Seized from government forces in 2015, Idlib and adjacent areas form the last major chunk of territory still in rebel hands.

Many of the residents are rebels and civilians who were bussed out of other areas as they came back under Syrian regime control.

Tuesday’s bombardment hit several areas held by the jihadist-led Hayat Tahrir al-Sham alliance, among them the large town of Jisr al-Shughur, but also areas held by rival Turkish-backed rebels, including the town of Ariha.

The Syrian military has been deploying reinforcements to the zone for more than a month, and Russia has stepped up its rhetoric. (afp)

Burundi president hate speech fuelling ‘crimes against humanity’: UN

GENEVA - UN investigators on Wednesday warned that crimes against humanity and other serious rights violations were continuing unabated in Burundi, blaming in part President Pierre Nkurunziza’s repeated calls to hatred and violence.

In its first report last year, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi said it had “reasonable grounds to believe” that government was committing crimes against humanity.

On Wednesday, it said such crimes were still ongoing, citing summary executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture and sexual violence.

“Serious human rights violations, including some which constitute crimes against humanity, have continued to be committed in Burundi, in 2017 and 2018,” the commission said as it released a fresh report on the situation in the tiny east African nation.

“Some practices, such as the disposal of bodies or operating at night, tend to make these violations less visible. Nevertheless, they are still real,” head of the commission Doudou Diene said in a statement.

Burundi plunged into crisis in 2015 after Nkurunziza sought a fiercely contested third term in office that his opponents said was unconstitutional.

Turmoil since then has killed at least 1,200 people, and has forced 400,000 to flee their homes and triggered an investigation by the International Criminal Court.

- ‘Impunity’ -

“Human rights violations documented by the Commission of Inquiry were aided by recurring calls

for hatred and violence, including by the President of the Republic,” the commission said Wednesday, saying such calls “took place in a general context of impunity.”

The UN investigators said they had “established a list of alleged perpetrators of crimes against humanity.”

They said they would make the list “available to any organ or jurisdiction tasked with carrying out independent and credible investigations on human rights violations and abuses committed in Burundi and which will guarantee the safety of the witnesses.”

Diene stressed that the Burundian judicial system itself “has neither the will nor the capacity to establish who is responsible and to prosecute perpetrators of violations.”

“The judiciary has become an instrument of repression used by the executive against any form of protest or opposition.”

The commission did not name the suspected perpetrators, but has said members of the country’s National Intelligence Service, the police, military officials and members of the ruling party’s youth league, the Imbonerakure were behind many of the worst violations.

It lamented the increasing strength of the Imbonerakure and decried the constantly shrinking of democratic space in the country.

“The control exercised over Burundians by the ruling power and the Imbonerakure increased significantly and is felt in all aspects of daily life,” commission member Francoise Hampson said in the statement. (afp)

A district in Indonesia’s deeply Islamic Aceh province has banned men and women from dining together unless they are married or related, an official said Wednesday, saying it would help women be “more well behaved”.

Aceh -- the only region in the world’s most populous Muslim majority country that imposes Islamic law -- has drawn fire in the past for putting moral restrictions on women.

It also attracted global condemnation for publicly whipping people found guilty of a range of offences including homosexuality, gambling and drinking alcohol.

Under the latest Islamic regulation, women in Bireuen district on Sumatra island will not be able to share a table with men at restaurants and coffee shops unless they are accompanied by their husband or a close male relative.

Co-workers on their lunch break would also be forbidden from sharing a meal. “The objective is to protect women’s dignity

so they will feel more comfortable, more at ease, more well behaved and will not do anything that violates sharia (Islamic law),” local head of the local sharia agency Jufliwan, who like many Indonesians has only one name, told AFP on Wednesday.

Another part of the directive – signed by the district head on August 5 -- said women who were alone or not with family should not be served at restaurants and cafés after 9:00 pm.

Authorities say it will be up to restaurateurs to enforce the regulation, although offenders will not be punished. Three years ago provincial capital Banda Aceh banned unaccompanied women from entertainment venues like cafes and sports halls after 11:00 pm.

In 2013, Lhokseumawe city in Sumatra’s north ordered women to sit “side-saddle” on motorbikes with their legs dangling off to one side. The mayor at the time said straddling male drivers on motorbikes was “improper”. (afp)

Jakarta’s Composite Index dropped 4.3 percent in afternoon trading -- threatening to suffer its biggest one-day drop since 2013 -- before regaining some ground to finish 3.76 percent lower.

Markets across Asia tumbled Wednesday on growing concerns about economic crises in emerging markets including Turkey, Argentina and South Africa, adding to the uncertainty stoked by US president Donald Trump’s trade rows with China and Canada.

Observers fear the problems could spread to other emerging market countries and possibly spill over into major economies.

“A chain reaction from Argentina and Turkey is coming to us,” Norico Gaman, head of research at Indonesia-based PT BNI Sekuritas, told Bloomberg News.

The rupiah and other emerging market currencies had already been under pressure as rising US interest

rates prompted investors to snap up dollar-denominated assets in search of better returns.

Indonesia’s currency has not been this weak since it was embroiled in a region-wide financial crisis that sparked economic ruin and street protests that led to the downfall of late dictator Suharto in 1998.

On Tuesday, Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan said that energy projects representing nearly half of President Joko Widodo’s signature 35,000 gigawatt electricity programme will either be postponed or restructured. The move could save some $8-10 billion in import costs, he added.

The delayed power projects -- reportedly worth some $25 billion -- are heavily reliant on imported components which become more expensive when Indonesia’s currency is weak.

The move is part of a broader bid to cut imports, including some consumer goods, to tackle a growing deficit in the current account, a broad measure of Indonesia’s trade with the rest of the world.

Jakarta has also announced plans to clamp down on currency speculators and ordered mining firms to repatriate their export earnings to beef up the country’s dollar supply.

The central bank has hiked interest rates several times this year to prop up the rupiah, which has lost about 10 percent since January. (afp)

LONDON - The economies of Italy and Spain faltered over the summer months and are now growing at their slowest rates in years, according to a closely watched survey of the 19-country eurozone.

The worry in financial markets is that Italy’s new coalition government could ramp up its anti-euro rhetoric if growth stumbles further, especially after the European Central Bank end its bond-buying stimulus program this year, as it has signaled it will do. Daniel Harenberg, a senior economist at Oxford Economics, said Wednesday’s survey highlights again that the business cycles in the eurozone are “not perfectly in sync,” with Italy potentially more affected by a slowdown in export orders in Germany.

“This bears the potential to heighten political tensions between the Italian government and European institutions once the ECB stops its quantitative easing towards the end of the year,” he said. (ap)

Bank of England chief hints he will stay to help with Brexit

LONDON - Bank of England Governor Mark Carney all but confirmed Tuesday that he is to stay at the helm of the central bank for longer than planned to help ensure Britain leaves the European Union as smoothly as possible.

Following days of speculation about an extension beyond his

planned June 2019 departure, Carney told a committee of lawmakers that during “this critical period” everyone should do what they can to help the Brexit process.

aftermath of Britain’s vote in June 2016 to leave the EU. “Even though I have already agreed to extend my time to support a smooth Brexit, I am willing to do whatever else I can in order to promote both a smooth Brexit and an effective transition at the Bank of England,” he said Tuesday.

With Brexit due March 29, 2019, Carney confirmed he has been in talks with Britain’s Treasury chief, Philip Hammond, about extending his tenure again. Concerns have been raised recently that the Treasury had yet to open up the appointment process to replace Carney.

Carney, who is reportedly also interested in returning to Canadian politics, has said the government will announce details “in due course.” Media reports have suggested his tenure may be extended by about a year or two.

“The sooner the government provides clarity, the better,” said Nicky Morgan, a Conservative lawmaker who chairs the Treasury Committee to which Carney was addressing Tuesday. “Any extension to Carney’s term should not be used to delay succession planning.”

Many backers of Brexit have accused Carney of taking sides during the Brexit referendum campaign, of being a leading proponent of socalled “Project Fear” when warning of the economic consequences of a vote to leave the EU. But many in the financial markets have been calling on Carney to stay longer to help reduce uncertainty.

The British government’s discussions with the EU have struggled to make progress over the past few months, and Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered a series of resignations from her cabinet, including those of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary and David Davis as Brexit secretary.

Her latest proposals for Brexit involve Britain maintaining many EU rules so British firms can keep trading easily in the European single market. Her plan has run into resistance from both the EU and within May’s Conservative Party.

With the opposition Labour Party also seemingly split over how to approach Brexit, concerns have risen that Britain will end up crashing out of the EU with no deal and no transition period after Brexit day

to help smooth the process.

Though Carney said last month that the risks of a no-deal Brexit were “uncomfortably high,” he said Tuesday that an agreement was the “more likely” scenario.

“The negotiations are getting to a critical stage and there’s still a wide range of views of potential outcomes,” he said.

Companies appear to be expecting a smooth exit, with only 20 percent of firms having contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit, Carney noted. Reaching a Brexit deal would likely boost business investment, jobs and consumer confidence, he said.

“There’s upside to this economy.” Last month, the Bank of England raised its main interest rate by a quarter point to 0.75 percent to contain inflation, which has risen above the 2 percent target. Prices have risen largely as a result of a 15-percent fall in the pound in the wake of the Brexit vote, from around $1.50.

Following Carney’s comments, the pound was down 0.5 percent at $1.2812, amid a broad-based increase in the dollar. (ap)

Though the single currency bloc continues to expand at a healthy tick, financial information firm IHS Markit cautioned Wednesday about developments in the eurozone’s number 3 and 4 economies.

It main index of business activity across the eurozone’s manufacturing and services — called the composite purchasing managers’ index — rose to 54.5 points in August from 54.3 the previous month. Anything above 50 indicates expansion and August’s level points to quarterly economic growth of around 0.4 percent, in line with the second-quarter outcome.

Much of the growth, however, was due to Germany, the region’s biggest economy, and to a lesser extent France.

Chris Williamson, the firm’s chief business economist, cautioned about developments in Italy and Spain, with the former “on course for its weakest expansion for nearly two years.” For Spain, he said, growth could be even the “worst for almost five years.”

Wayang Wong of Tejakula Wins UNESCO Award

The Wayang Wong or human puppet of Tejakula, that takes its storyline form the Ramayana epic and is perfromed in Old Javanese, is becoming incresingly well-known internationally.

During the opening of the fourth annual Buleleng Festival, the Director General of Culture for the Ministry of Education and Culture -through the government of Buleleng, awarded the the wayang wong troupe with a certificate of appreciation for the establishment Tejakula’s wayang wong as world intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. The younger geneation is now expected to help preserve this art form in the face of the challenges of globilization.

Representing the Village of Tejakula, community leader and wayang wong perfromer Gede Komang was recived the certificate from the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana. Komang said that communities in the region are very much dedicated to protecting the sacred value of the wayang wong masks. The clan Temple of Tejakula Village houses some 75 masks, but only some of these masks can be displayed in “The original mask may not be taken out of the temple grounds and should only be used in performances at the clan temple of Tejakula village. The temple’s supporting devotee are dedicated to maintaining the sanctity of the wayang wong mask” he said.

Actually, continued Gede Komang, there are quite a lot of travelers who are attracted to visit Tejakula village and see the wayang wong show. However, since the wayang wong mask the temple cannot be

taken outside the temple grounds, tejakula’s community leader finally decided to create replicas of the mask so that the wayang wong could be perfromed elsewhere. “The duplicates are allowed to be taken out of the village. In the 1970s, the wayang wong mask duplicates were used in performances at home and overseas making the wayang wong more widely known in Asian and European countries”, he added.

Gede Komang said that wayang wong becomae known in many countries thanks to the efforst of famous leaders like Nyoman Tusan and Made Bandem, Jero Bendesa and Santika. Gede Komang himself participated in devotional work by dancing at Tejakula village. He was then appointed as advisor to the Teja Murti wayang wong troupe –the only one in his village.

So far there have been no difficulties in dancing the wayang wong. “Indeed, our friends have

no difficulty dancing the wayang wong. However, they do have some trouble chanting the kekawin or kidung songs of the Ramayana storyline because these Balinese songs use the Old Javanese language that they do not understand.

The wayang wong of Tejakula was originally devellpoed in the seventeenth century and had to be perfromed on Umanis Galungan”, explained Gede Komang.

According to Gede Komang, the wayang wong players receive divine revelations through generations allwoign the dance to be preserved into the next generation.

It is said that if any residents does not comply with the faith or are not willing to perform it, they would often experience pain or difficulty in life. “People who are not descendants of wayang wong dancers are also given the opportunity to learn to dance the wayang wong” added he said. (kmb)

Babakan hamlet in Sukawati, Gianyar, is known for having many puppeteers and this hamlet located adjacent to the Sukawati Art Market is also famous as being home to many art maestros. Wayan Wija is one puppeteer whose name is familiar to art lovers from his distinct telling fhte storu of Tantri.

Wayan Nartha and Nyoman Granyam are two other well known pupeterrs from Bebakan hamlet.

Granyam became famous after President Soekarna invited him to stage a puppet show at the Ubud Palace in 1962. There are many other puppeteers from this hamlet who are well known in the area and in many other parts of Bali and beyond.

I Ketut Sudiana, who is a descendant of a Nyoman Nartha, explained that Babakan is famous as a puppet art village. From time immemorial puppeteers have thrived here. Currently there are approximately 20 third generation puppeteers in Babakan hamlet who perform various types of puppet shows. “Babakan Sukawati became a center of art during the kingdom era”, he said.

The people of Babakan have remained highly creative developing all manner of traditional puppets with Wayan Madra being a famous example. Many foreign scholars come to Babakan to research Balinese puppets, explained this lecturer from the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar.

Babakan village is also famous for silver handicrafts, drawing many buyers. The late Wayan Sobrat was a famous bade tower (used to haul body in cremation ceremony) and lion artist and his skills have been passed down to his children who still make these beautiful sculptures.

Most interestingly, the Baba-

kan community is still diligent in preserving their palm-leaf manuscripts as a source of inspiration for their performing arts. The legacy of the palm-leaf manuscript is also varied. “The manuscripts are a very useful reference for puppeteers for the story material in puppet performances. Function-worthy of underpass still waits for permit of central govt Inauguration to be held on September 12 MANGUPURA - Physical work of the Ngurah Rai intersection underpass with a total length of 712 meters has been totally completed. DENPASAR - Laboratory of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) tested the samples of mushroom chips and the results were positive to contain psilocin (first class narcotics). The BNNP Bali along with the staff had anticipated the mushroom chips from circulating because it is very dangerous.

DHAKA - Motorcyclists without helmets will be barred from buying fuel at filling stations in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka, police said.

The move is part of efforts to quell tensions after the city of nearly 20 million people was rocked by angry protests about poor road safety last month.

“The petrol pumps (owners)

have already been told not to sell fuel to any motor bikers without helmets,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said on Tuesday. He added that a maximum of two people were

allowed on a bike and pillion passengers must also wear a helmet.

Protests across Dhaka and other cities in August saw tens of thousands of teenage school pupils and students block the streets to demand better road safety on Bangladesh’s chaotic and corruptionridden transport network, after a speeding bus killed two teenage

pedestrians. In the wake of the protests, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet approved a new transport law stipulating harsher punishments for offenders.

Bangladeshi highways are some of the deadliest in the region with around 12,000 dying in road accidents every year, according to a private group that monitors ac-

cidents.

In the Eid al Adha holidays last month, 259 people were killed and 960 people were injured in 237 road accidents in the space of 13 days.

SRINAGAR - Indian police have arrested a woman and four others after her nine-year-old stepdaughter was allegedly gangraped, murdered and mutilated, in the latest horrific crime to shock the country.

The child’s decomposed body was found on Tuesday hidden behind bushes about a kilometre from her home in the Baramulla district of Indian-administered Kashmir, police said.

Her father had reported her missing 12 days earlier.

Police said the woman, aged 36,

was jealous of her stepdaughter and of her husband’s second wife, and on August 24 took the girl to a forested area.

There she allegedly directed her own 14-year-old son and his two teenage friends, aged 14 and 19, to take turns in raping the child.

The stepmother is accused of then strangling the girl while her son hit the child on the head with an axe. His friend brought vehicle battery acid from home and sprinkled it on the body while another friend gouged out her eyes before dumping the corpse in the bushes.

A 28-year-old man has also been arrested over the case.

“Physical condition and preliminary forensic analysis of dead body substantiated all these facts,” said a police statement issued on Tuesday.

Local police Superintendent Imtiyaz Hussain told AFP the teenage offenders have confessed to the crime and separately corroborated the facts during questioning.

“They will be sent to a juvenile home and dealt with according to the state’s juvenile law,” Hussain said. (afp)

10 percent of kids now have ADHD

IOWA - More than 10 percent of U.S. kids have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), up from 6 percent 20 years ago, researchers reported Friday.

It’s not clear why, but it’s startling, said Dr. Wei Bao of the University of Iowa, who helped lead the study.

“It is very common now – one in 10 kids,” Bao told NBC News.

The team used surveys covering more than 180,000 children aged 4 to 17 between 1997 and 2016. The surveys were in-person with a parent or guardian and asked whether the child had ever been diagnosed with ADHD. “Over the 20-year period from 1997 to 2016, we found a significant increase in the prevalence of diagnosed ADHD from 1997-1998 to 2015-2016,”

they wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA Open Network.

“We found a consistent upward trend across subgroups by age, sex, race/ethnicity, family income, and geographic regions.”

It’s not clear why. ADHD has a genetic underpinnings. Smoking in pregnancy, low birth weight and other factors also play a role.

“There might be multiple reasons,” Bao said.

“First, we are knowing this condition better, so that we are better at recognizing and diagnosing this condition. Second, the public are more aware of this condition, increasing the possibility of affected kids being screened and diagnosed,” Bao said.

“Third, more infants born early or small (i.e., preterm birth, low birth weight) survive, but they are at higher risk of developing ADHD.” (net)

STDs rise to new record in U.S., CDC report finds

SEXUALLY transmitted diseases are on the rise in America, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, nearly 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017, surpassing the record set in 2016 by more than 200,000, CDC scientists reported Tuesday.

Experts say many factors have contributed to the rapid rise, though the biggest one may be less frequent condom use. It’s less clear whether dating apps, like Tinder, have contributed in some way to the spread of STDs, though some researchers think they have.

“We have seen steep and sustained increases over the last five years,” said Dr. Gail Bolan, director of the Division of STD Prevention at the CDC. “Usually there are ebbs and flows, but this sustained increase is very concerning. We haven’t seen anything like this for two decades.”

In the past, the majority of syphilis infections were seen in gay men, bisexual men and other men who have sex with men, Bolan told NBC News. “More recently, there have been increases among heterosexual men and women, including among pregnant women, which means we’re starting to see these infections in their babies.”

Bolan and others suspect that newer drugs that have made HIV less lethal as well as one that lowers the risk of being infected could have contributed to declines in condom use. An Australian study that followed nearly 17,000 gay and bisexual men before and after a campaign to promote pre-exposure prophylaxis, the use of drugs that protect against HIV infection, found that condom use had fallen dramatically. Before the campaign,

46 percent of the men studied were using condoms; after, only 31 percent were.

“Certainly we’ve known since lifesaving HIV medications became available in the 2000s, things changed,” Bolan said. “Added to that was the very important advance for HIV prevention. But those tools don’t prevent STDs. Now we’re seeing declining use of condoms not just in gay and bisexual men, but also in heterosexuals.”

CDC researchers found that gonorrhea diagnoses increased by 67 percent — from 333,004 to 555,608 — in just five years. The sharpest increase was in men, in whom cases nearly doubled, going from 169,130 in 2013 to 322,169 in 2017. Though increases were also seen in women, they weren’t quite as dramatic, rising 18 percent over the same time period.

Another factor driving the skyrocketing numbers of STD cases may be a decline in funding for state and local agencies working on prevention, said Michael Fraser, executive director of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

“We’ve seen a tremendous increase in many areas primarily due to the eroding public health infrastructure,” he said. “The lack of funding at the state and local level to really invest in prevention work is not just about medications, it’s about disease investigators who meet with the individual who is infected and talk about their behavior and do contact tracing to try to prevent the future spread.”

The United States “continues to have the highest STD rates in the industrialized world,” said David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors. (net)

DENPASAR - The import of Bali province in July 2018 valued at USD 22 million. It has doubled compared to June 2018. Meanwhile, by year of year (July 2018 compared to July 2017) the imports of Bali province rose 74.76 percent.

However, the imports in July 2018 were poised by the exports worth USD 46 million. So, the Bali’s trade balance remains positive.

Distribution Statistics Division Head at the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), I Gede Nyoman Subadri, explained that when compared to June 2018, Bali’s imports doubled. It was triggered by an increase in imports of essential oils from Hong Kong. In addition, Bali also imported goods from the United States, Australia and Timor Leste in the form of vanilla. Country origin of the import is dominated by Hong Kong (44.95 percent), the United States (20.55 percent) and Australia (8.60 percent).

Compared to July 2017, the import of Bali rose 74.76 percent. It happened because the imports from the United States increased 135.53 percent, Australia (192.54 percent) and Italy. “From Italy, our import increased hundreds of percent in the form of machinery and spare parts,” he said.

The most imported commodities are essential oils, cosmetics, fragrances, leather goods, bells and

watches. According to him, essential oils are imported for fragrancemaking raw materials. After having added-value, they are re-exported.

However, he did not know for sure where the essential oil is absorbed and what it is used for.

Bali’s trade balance is poised by export. In July 2018, the Bali’s export value reached USD 46 million. In terms of its country of destination, the largest exports of Bali are to the United States reaching 31 percent and then resumed with Singapore, Japan and Australia.

Compared to June 2018 amounting to USD 33.34 million, the exports in July 2018 experienced an increase of 39.28 percent. By yoy, the export of Bali only increased 13.05 percent.

Bali has the maritime wealth, so the dominant commodities exported in July 2018 were fish and shrimp reaching 24.35 percent as well as jewelry and apparel. The commodities exported to Australia included fish, shrimp, tuna and its processed products, home furnishings, and wood furniture. Besides, there is a new product to be exported there namely fishing vessels to China. The quite high contributors are apparel and knitwear to the United States. Hong Kong is also the largest export destination in the form of leather goods, while jewelry is mostly exported to Singapore. (kmb42)

Prosecutor’s Office had the defendant sentenced to 15 years in prison. Aside from physical punishment, the defendant must also pay a fine worth IDR 1 billion or a subsidiary punishment of one-year imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the panel of judges in his decision stated the defendant Amirul had been proved legally and convincingly guilty of having committed a crime of conspiracy and narcotics precursor. He has no rights or goes up against the law of producing, importing, exporting or distributing narcotics of the first class in the form of non-plant and has the weight of more than 5 grams.

The defendant was charged with the first alternative indictment by the prosecutor, where the defendant was charged under Article 113 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) of the Republic of Indonesia’s Law No.35/2009 concerning narcotics. (kmb37)

Fate of bullet shell crafts in Kamasan

KAMASAN village in Klungkung district does not only serve as ‘warehouse’ of the Kamasan puppet painting artists. Local people are also very good at the making of bullet casing crafts. Then, what about their progress today?

The craft business is located at Sangging hamlet, not far from Semarapura town. To look for it, there is already a signboard at the end. From the highway, you just need to walk around 250 meters. Then, you will encounter a house with a white wall. It’s large enough and very suitable to be occupied. It is a glimpse about Made Sumerta’s residence.

This 70-year-old man is an expert at crafting bullet casings. The production is carried out directly at his home with very simple equipment. It is just like the making of tray he had been long involved. He utilizes fist, hammers and furnace. However, they are all stored neatly in not too big cart. There no more production and no more high-pitched blows. Sumerta recounts slowly.

For about a year, he does not receive any orders. It is very different from ever before. There were always five to ten orders every month. “Now, it is quiet for long enough time. So, I do not produce it any longer,” he said, recently.

His orders usually come from outside Klungkung.

Reseidents of Serangan anxious about BTID’s plan to extend canal

DENPASAR - Residents of Serangan are once again anxious about developments on their island. PT Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID) plans to open the canal that previously did not reach to the North Sea of Serangan and people are worried. Local residents of Serangan visited the BTID office on Jalan Tukad Penataran, Serangan, on Tuesday (Sep. 4) to express their concern.

Accompanied by chief of Serangan customary village, Made Sedana, the secretary of customary village, Nyoman Kemu Antara, headman of Serangan, I Wayan Karma and head of South Denpasar subdistrict, I Wayan Budha, the villagers were received by General Manager of PT BTID, Made Sumantra.

During the meeting the village residents expressed their concern following the reception for the circular from BTID related to work on the canal that had previously not reached all the way to the sea. The location in question is used to perform melasti rituals and the nearby area for tourist parking. Fishermen also expressed their concern as this stretch of beach is where they

moor their boats when they are not at sea. If the canal is opened it will be difficult to access this area.

“We have come to the BTID office to deliver the results of a meeting held amongst the residents of Serangan village.

We hope the sub-district head and the BTID can find solutions related to the canal construction so that it will not be carried out to the north coast of Serangan as it will erode our melasti venue”, said Kemu Antara.

Responding to the request, General Manager of BTID, Made Sumantra, revealed that the company intends to extend the canal to the northern sea and ensured that it will not interfere with melasti activities. “Due to the crisis in 1998, the canal was not able to be worked on then”, he added.

His company, he said will curb the canal flow so that it runs 5-6 meters away form the melasti table. “We will continue to work on the opening the canal tomorrow (Sep 5). We have the budget so we will not wait any longer.

Three villages in Tabanan labeled “rabies red zone”

TABANAN - Three villages in Tabanan are currently lableled as red zones for rabies following the finding of rabies infected animals in these areas. Rabies-infected carrier animals were found in Delod Peken village (Tabanan subdistrict) and Beraban village (Kediri) in 2018 while rabies infected animals in Pujungan village (Pupuan) were last found in 2017.

Head of the Animal Section for the Tabanan Agriculture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wiksuara, explained on Tuesday (Sep. 4) that areas are declared as red zones until a full two years have passed since rabies infected animals have been found there. Which is why Pujungan village in Pupuan is still considered a red zone despite no rabies infected animals having been found there since 2017.

“Both Delod Peken village and Beraban village have had reports

of rabies infected dogs in 2018, so they became labelled as red zones”, he added.

To prevent rabies transmission in rabies-carrier animals -primarily dogs, the Agriculture Agenc routinely conducts mass vaccinations every year. In implementing mass vaccination, added Wisuaksara, they first target red zones, then the yellow zone (areas adjacent to red zones) and then finally green zones (rabies-free).

According to their latest data, the mass vaccination in 2018 reached 41,251 rabies-carrier animals consisting of 40,697 dogs, 544 cats and 10 monkeys. The number of vaccinated rabies-carrier animals has approached the target of the vaccine disbursed by central government amounting to 48,000.

Mass vaccination will continue until the remaining vaccines have been used up. (kmb24)

NEW YORK - Country legend Dolly Parton will be honored at a charity concert ahead of next year’s Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy, which administers the prize, announced Tuesday.

Parton will be the 2019 focus of Musicares, a charitable wing of the Recording Academy that raises money to help musicians in need through the annual starstudded gala.

Parton is among the most prominent women in country

music and one of the Nashville-based industry’s most prolific songwriters. She became such a cultural icon that she is the center of the Dollywood theme park in Tennessee.

Announcing the choice of Parton, the first country artist to be recognized at Musicares, the Recording Academy pointed to her longstanding charitable activities which include working on literacy and assisting Tennessee residents after disasters.

“Dolly Parton has always been and continues to be a courageous trailblazer and indomitable inspi-

ration for creators and artists,” Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in a statement.

Announcing the schedule for next year’s Grammy Week in Los Angeles, Portnow said that Parton would be honored on February 8 with the Grammys two days later.

The awards, the most prestigious handed out by the music industry, shifted this year to New York to mark the Grammys’ 60th edition.

The last Musicares honored Fleetwood Mac, bringing together the notoriously fractious band for a concert with performances by Lorde, Miley Cyrus and Haim attended by former president Bill Clinton. (afp)

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ keeps shining at N. American box office LOS ANGELES - “Crazy Rich Asians” has ruled at the North American box office for the third weekend in a row, raking in close to $30 million over the Labor Day weekend, industry watchers said Tuesday.

The Warner Brothers adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name took in $28.6 million for the Friday-throughMonday period, dropping just 11 percent from the previous weekend, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

Warner Brothers scored another hit with shark-thriller “The Meg,” in the No. 2 spot again with takings of $13.8 million. Jason Statham stars as a rescue diver trying to save scientists trapped in a submarine being attacked by a huge, prehistoric shark.

In third spot was Tom Cruise adventure film “Mission Impossible -- Fallout” from Paramount, which took in $9.3 million. Globally, the action blockbuster has earned nearly $650 million, the best

performance of any of the “MI” films to date.

Fourth went to MGM’s new “Operation Finale,” at $7.9 million.

Oscar Isaac plays an Israeli Mossad agent who tracks Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann (Ben Kingsley) to the Buenos Aires suburb where he is living under a false name.

And in fifth was “Searching” from Sony, at $7.6 million. Written and directed by filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty, it tells the story of a Korean-American man’s desperate effort to find his teenage daughter after she goes missing in California. It stars John Cho, Michelle La and Debra Messing. (afp)

Entire tourist island plunges into darkness after major electricity outage

Denpasar - Bali has been left without power following a major electricity outage on Wednesday afternoon. The power went out on the Indonesian tourist island just after 12pm local time.

It outage followed a supply disruption between a coal power plant and a substation. Homes remain without power in Denpasar six hours later and traffic lights are still down in the city.

Local utility authorities are still

investigating the exact cause of the outage as they work to restore power. Expat Roy Suer tweeted: ‘Whilst temporary issues are normal in Bali, this is the biggest I’ve experienced so far’.

He said they had been using

a diesel generator to ‘power the villas and resort’. The blackout is due to an issue with electricity supply from Paiton, East Java to the Kediri substation in Bali’s Tabanan, according to PLN Bali region general manager Nyoman Suwarjoni.

A disruption in the power transfer from Paiton to Kediri is our problem since there is also no power in Paiton, he told bisnis.

The cause of the disturbance in the supply in Paiton is still being investigated, he said.

Residents in Denpasar, Canggu, Kerobokan, Kuta, Jimbaran, and Uluwatu have all reported a loss power over the past several hours.

Suwarjoni says PLN is attempting to get power in Pesanggaran, a smaller power station in Banyuwangi, East Java to come through,
