MAKHACHKALA - A suicide bomber rammed into a Russian firing range killing five people and wounding scores on Sunday in the volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan, law enforcement sources said. The explosives-packed car attacked a military base used by the motor rifle brigade at Dalny near the city of Buynaksk, some 40 kilometres (30 miles) west of the local capital Makhachkala, said the sources, who refused to be identified. “Five people are dead. Three of
them died on the spot and another two in hospital,” a law enforcement source told AFP, adding that the blast had hurt at least another 35 people, two of whom were in critical condition. Russia’s defence ministry promptly imposed a state of heightened security at military installations in its Southern Military District — made up of the mainly Muslim regions along Russia’s southern flank. The coming Idul Fitri (Lebaran) a number of supermarkets and shops started to offer parcels to its customers. To avoid any expired items, on Friday (3/9) there has been supervising by the Drug and Food Inspector Board (BPOM). A number of shops then were visited to make sure these items are safe to consume. In the raid done by two teams, it was found some items were expired such as four kinds of drinks inside the parcels. “The result of the raid, we found four food items expired and still displayed. Those kind of food were yogurt milk and imported products,” a Denpasar BPOM worker, Ketut Merta Sedana, explained after a raid in some shops and supermarkets around Gatot Subroto Street. Meanwhile, the Head of Denpasar BPOM, Dra. Corry Panjaitan accompanied by Head of Checking Section, Dra. Putu Maryati, admitted the efforts to make sure these items are safe to consume which means inside a parcel sold to the people was made sure no items are damaged, expired,
without distribution label, also free from pork. Corry admitted the supervision has been routinely done. And actually the Board is very appreciating some shops displayed parcels with guaranty which means if any items in it are damaged then it can be given back, “This is one of a guaranty form for the customers.” It was said, during the BPOM raid, no expired items found in the parcels yet they found three kind of fasting-break food with dangerous substance, textile colouring substance. It’s a shame these food products are home made industries and managed individually, “But we are still going to see if they are in the data that we have made before or not.” Meanwhile, Tiara Dewata Operational Manager, Novie, admitted since the allowance to give officials a parcel is prohibited, the number of parcel orders have decreased a lot. Hundreds of pretima worth IDR 20 billion secured Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The ranks of police criminal detective (Reskrim) of Badung Police reaped a brilliant achievement. Pretima or sanctified effigy theft case occurred in some areas in Bali seemed to have been revealed. The police criminal detective under leadership of Chief Soma Adnyana managed to secure hundreds of sanctified effigies of various types. Those effigies estimated to cost IDR 20 billion were obtained from Vila Marsia inhabited by Roberto Gamba, 50. The villa is located on Jalan Bumbuk, Kerobokan, Badung. Police officers conduct the raids into the Roberto’s villa, last Thursday (Sep 2) at 6:00 pm Local Time. Such a raid was carried out after police received information from the public. “We got information from the public that there are hundreds of antiques in the Roberto’s villa,” said Chief of Badung Police Dwi Suseno, last Friday (Sep 3). Chief Dwi Suseno explained, once his party heard the report, he immediately ordered his men to do the examination. Police moved and investigated the villa of the man claiming to be an antique collector. “We went into the villa, and there we encountered hundreds of sanctified effigies put in one of the rooms. They belonged to different shapes and types,” he said. Having performed the checking, the total number reached 110 units. However, they did not include some paintings, manuscripts and coins put into a bag. They were mostly of sacred articles made of gold and copper. “We
immediately secured the evidence to Badung Police, including the owner (Roberto—ed),” he explained. From the results of police investigation, Roberto admitted to get the antiques from a number of people in Bali. Roberto purchased them at different prices starting from IDR 500 thousand to IDR 1 million. Similarly, Roberto mentioned a number of names. They consisted of Nyoman and Made from Nusa Penida, Komang Oka from Sukawati, Gianyar and Gadu from Tabanan. Not only that, Roberto also admitted to get the goods from an art shop at Kerobokan and Ciputat, Jakarta. After doing further development, it was also obtained some other names, such as Rai Kembar, Wayan Wardana, and Gusti Made Lanang. “All these people were secured with the status a witness only,” he told reporters last Friday. Entering the seventh day before Idul Fitri holiday, last Friday (Sep 3), the situation of Gilimanuk Harbor began to be overrun by homecomers wishing to cross to Java. The line of bicycles looked to dominate from early morning to evening. Increase of passengers had been discernible since last Thursday (Sep 2). A number of homecomers deliberately chose the weekend so they could stay longer in their homeland and avoid long lines. Most homecomers were from Denpasar and surrounding areas. Long queues at the electric ticket counter of vehicles only occurred in the morning and afternoon. A number of homecomers admitted to intentionally take time in the morning or afternoon. Some were also reluctant to be trapped in the congestion as in the previous years. “Based on experience of last year, on approaching the holiday I was stuck in congestions for hours. Since wishing to stay longer at my home village, I accidentally set off at dawn from Denpasar,” said Harianto, 32, from Jombang. A number of police officers had been in charge of Post I (port’s en-
trance) since last Thursday and appeared to perform more intensive inspection. Similarly, the post was added with more personnel. A police officer in charge, Irfing Jaya, said that especially at Gilimanuk, the Jemberana Police estimated there would be 61,000 homecomers passing through the Gilimanuk Harbor. Peak density of homecomers was estimated to occur on three and two days before Idul Fitri holiday. For a better security services to road users starting from Pekutatan until Gilimanuk, the Jemberana Police had alerted 336 personnel. “We have prepared 16 security and monitoring posts. Starting from this year, police would attempt to reduce the queue by disciplining the inflows and outflows from the Gilimanuk Harbor. “We will arrange by making a special point. Likewise, we also put a concrete barrier and a drum from in front of the Puseh Temple of Gilimanuk up to the T-junction of Cekik or along two kilometers,” added Unit Chief of Traffic Services of
Jemberana Police, Nyoman Nuryana. In the meantime, for ship offering the crossing transport in the Bali Strait, the ASDP authority had alerted 28 ships along with five docks. Especially for motorcycle riders, the authority had set up tents along one kilometer. DUBLIN – Protesters hurled shoes and eggs Saturday at Tony Blair who held the first public signing of his memoir amid high security in Ireland’s capital. Hundreds more people lined up to have their books autographed — evidence that the divisions left by Blair’s decade as British leader have yet to heal. Blair’s new book, “A Journey,” is a best-seller, but it has angered opponents of his policies, especially the 2003 invasion of Iraq. About 200 demonstrators chanted that Blair had “blood on his hands” as the former prime minister arrived at a Dublin bookstore. Shoes, eggs and other projectiles were thrown toward Blair as he emerged from a car, but did not hit him. A flip-flop could be seen lying on the roof of a BMW in Blair’s motorcade. Security was tight, with book buyers — who appeared to outnumber the protesters by about two to one — told to hand over bags and mobile phones before entering Eason’s bookstore on O’Connell Street, Dublin’s main shopping thoroughfare. There were scuffles between police and demonstrators when some
tried to force their way through the security cordon. Two protesters were bundled into the back of a security van. Several demonstrators, including one wheelchair user, laid themselves in the van’s path, and riot police were brought in to remove them. Police said four men were arrested and charged with public order offenses. Blair spent about two hours in the store before emerging to more shouts, boos and hurled eggs. He was quickly driven away, as a police helicopter circled overhead. “Blair took the world to war in Iraq and Afghanistan on the basis of lies,” protester Donal MacFhearraigh said. He said Blair should be indicted as a war criminal. Another protester, 24-year-old Kate O’Sullivan, said she was taken away by security guards after approaching Blair in the store and trying to perform a citizen’s arrest. Confrontation erupted again once Blair had left, as police stopped demonstrators from entering the bookstore. Nepal has been without a government since June 30, when former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal stood down under pressure from the opposition Maoist party to pave the way for a new power-sharing government. Since then, political leaders have been unable to agree on the shape of the new administration and five earlier votes to try to select a new prime minister have failed. Sunday’s vote is due at 3:00pm (0915 GMT). The Maoists, who fought a decade-long civil war against the state before transforming themselves into a political party ahead of 2008 elections, hold the largest number of seats in parliament, but not enough to govern alone. Party leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal, better know as Prachanda, is standing against Ram Chandra Poudel, chairman of the second-largest party in parliament, the centrist Nepali Congress. But neither candidate has been able to secure the backing of rival parties that they would need to form a new coalition government. Negotiations between the Maoists and a grouping of four small parties that collectively hold 82 of the 601 seats in parliament continued all week, but appeared not to have resulted in a deal on time for Sunday’s vote. In the meantime, the country is being ruled by a caretaker government with limited powers, a situation that has delayed much-needed public spending in one of the world’s poorest countries. The speaker of the house Subas Nembang warned of a “serious crisis” if the stalemate persisted. “The political parties remain unclear as to whether Sunday’s vote will yield a successful result,” he told AFP. “People are growing frustrated by the continuing failure of the political parties to elect a new government, and the impasse has raised questions about the democratic system. “The country has been ruled by a caretaker government for two months, resulting in a delay to the annual budget, and it is heading towards a serious crisis.” Nepal’s parliament, or Constituent Assembly, was elected in May 2008 with a two-year mandate to complete the country’s post-war peace process and draft a new national constitution.

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan offered to resign Saturday amid accusations of nepotism over the hiring of his daughter for a ministry job, officials said. Yu made his offer to President Lee Myung-bak after coming under mounting public fire, even after issuing a public apology and removing his daughter from the job on Friday. Yu’s daughter, who had worked as a contractor at the ministry’s trade bureau for three years before quitting last year, was rejected
along with seven other applicants when she applied for a midlevel job in July. Then, this past week, she was hired for the same post after another hiring process in which she and five others applied. Presidential spokeswoman Kim Hee-jung confirmed that Lee was informed of Yu’s resignation offer, but did not say whether the president would accept it. “I decided to resign because I am sorry to the public for causing trouble,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Kim Young-sun quoted as Yu as saying. Lee, who has ordered a thorough investigation into the possible rigging of the hiring process, will likely accept the resignation offer, the Yonhap

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Investigators expressed confidence Sunday that they will learn why an airplane carrying skydivers crashed in flames near a popular tourist spot in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, killing four Europeans and five New Zealanders. Six investigators from New Zealand’s Transport Accident Investigation Commission were traveling to the crash scene to begin inquiries along with a coroner, officials said. The plane caught fire after takeoff Saturday from an airstrip at Fox Glacier on the country’s South Island, said Ian Henderson, a spokesman for local ambulance services. But some witnesses said the fire erupted when the plane crashed into a fence at the end of the runway after it failed to lift off safely. Police said the foreign victims were Patrick Byrne, 26, of County Wexford, Ireland; Glen Bourke, 18, of Coburg, Victoria, Australia; Annita Kirsten, 23, of Germany; and Brad Coker, 24, of Farnborough, England. The five New Zealanders included the pilot, Chaminda Senadhira, 33, of Queenstown and four dive-masters, Adam Bennett of
Motueka, Michael Suter of New Plymouth, Christopher McDonald of Mapua and Rodney Miller of Greymouth. Chief crash investigator Ian McClelland said a full site inspection would take place Monday. Therefore, the US government and Christians all over the world need to stop this crazy act that could instigate bitter reactions from the Muslim World, he said. Fitriaman said the acts of burning the holy Qur‘an could trigger unpredictable responses from Muslims all over the world. This situation could cause conflicts among different religious followers. MEDAN - Thick smoke mixed with volcanic ash was seen covering Mount Sinabung in Tanah Karo, North Sumatra, on Saturday after its fourth eruption at 6.05pm on Friday. Head of the local office of the ministry of communications and information Jhonson Tarigan when contacted by ANTARA from here on Saturday said thick smoke still kept flowing out of the volcano. He said people in Kabanjahe could not see the mountain laying 2,640 meter above the sea level because of the smoke.
“The mountain also could not be seen from the Evacuees Control Command Center where I am now while normally it could be seen clearly from here,” he said. Tarigan said following the volcano‘s first eruption the atmosphere in Kabanjahe had always been cloudy as if rain would fall. Mount Sinabung, the highest mountain in North Sumatra around 110 kilometers west of provincial capita Medan, first erupted on August 29, 2010 after laying dormant for 400 years, making thousands of villagers living on its slopes to flee.

Bali Today Gilimanuk Port Operates 24 Ferries to Serve Lebaran Travelers Antara
DENPASAR - Bali’s Gilimanuk ferry port has put 24 of its 28 ferries into service to transport post-fasting month travelers whose number began to rise on Saturday, a port official said. The number of vehicles, particularly two-wheel vehicles, making the crossing to East Java’s Ketapang port was expected to reach over 5,000 on Saturday. “Since yesterday, port activities have been increasing with the number of motorcycles ferried to Ketapang port recorded at 5,000 units,” operations manager of inland waterway firm PT ASDP for Gilimanuk, Ospar Silaban, said on Saturday. He said the number of motorcycles using ferry services on Friday reached 5,000 units and on Saturday it was expected to exceed 5,000 units. In an effort to anticipate a drastic increase, PT ASDP was operating 24 ferries of the 28 ships that had been made available. He said that although there was an increase in the number of vehicles, yet
it did not create a long queue. “There is no queue at present,” he said. He said the increase also happened with private cars. He said that based on the experience in previous years Gilimanuk port would see the peak of activities on two to one days before the Idul Fitri D-Day on Friday. Ospar called on travelers to conduct their Idul Fitri trips before the peak days in an effort to avoid traffic jams and long queues. Millions of seasonal passengers travel to their home towns to have family reunions during the annual postfasting Lebaran holidays. During the Idul Fitri holiday season last year, the number of homebound travelers reached about 27.25 million, of which 16.2 million used various public transportation modes while the remaining 11.2 million used private cars and motorcycles.

TABANAN - Police in Tabanan, Bali Province, have questioned Agus Sumariana, 35, and his eight workers for their alleged involvement in an illegal LPG injection business. Police officers raided a factory in Banjar Kukub hamlet, Perean Tengah village, Baturiti sub-district, Tabanan district that Agus had used to run his illegal LPG injection business on early Saturday. “We have monitored the suspect’s activities for a month. After getting sufficient evidence and clues, we deployed a group of policemen to raid the place,” Chief of Tabanan police precinct Adjunct Senior Commissioner AA Made Sudana said here Saturday. Agus and his workers allegedly removed the LPG volume from the three kilogram gas canisters to the 12 and 50 kilogram typed cylinders for his own profits inside his factory, he said. The police found equipment that the suspects often used to remove the three-kilogram LPG canisters, such as pipes and the three, 12 and 50 kilogram typed cylinders, he said. Local residents were not aware of Agus’s illegal LPG injection activities because he and his workers did that inside the locked factory at different time

Besides that, the government was also committed to conducting door-todoor and community-to-community familiarization programs so that gas stove users would understand the safest way of using LPG. In dealing with the problem, President Yudhoyono had proposed that the LPG aroma be made smellier to enable gas stove users to detect leaking LPG cylinders. Balinese Culture Bali Prehistoric Finds Moved to Research Facilities Antara
GIANYAR - Two prehistoric sarcophaguses containing skeletal remains found recently at Subak Saba, Keramas village, Blahbatuh sub district, Gianyar district, were on Friday moved to the Denpasar Archaelogical Office’s research and preservation facilities. “We have been studying the relics for almost one week, and this morning we moved the two sarcophaguses one of which contained a complete human skeleton, and the other skeletal fragments,” a researcher with the Denpasar Archeology Office, Dra Ayu Kusumati, said here Friday. She said the skeletal fragments would be kept at the Denpasar Archeology Office and the two sarcophaguses at the Archaeological Heritage Preservation building at Bedulu village, Blahbatuh sub district. “We will further study the skeletons in Denpasar,” she said. According Dawa Kompyang Gede, the head researcher of the sarcophaguses at Keramas village, the prehistoric caskets which were found last Saturday (Aug 28) were different in size. One was 150 cm long and 50 cm wide, and the other, 100 cm long and 12 cm wide. The bigger sarcophagus contained a complete human skeleton and the other one a fractured skeleton. Dewa Kompyang said, in one of the two sarcophaguses, a jug was found next to the skull while in the other sarcophagus there were parts of a broken jug. He said the complete skeleton was identified as a male while the sex of the broken one could not be immediately determined. “The skeleton was broken and therefore it was difficult to determine its sex while it was laying facedown,” Dewa said. He said the sarcophaguses’ age was estimated at between 2,000 and 2,500 years or made during prehistoric times. “In those days, people already knew metal tools
which were proven by the bulge on the human face or a mask that looked like a turtle at the end of the sarcophagus. People then also knew the concept of mutual assistance and unity,” Dewa Kompyang said. He added the mask was the symbol of a spirit leading the dead person into the other world. “Only noble and influential people use such coffins,” he said.

INGREDIENTS: 1 whole duck, weighing about 2 kg 8 cups coconut milk 2 lemon grass, bruised 2 salam leaves 1 tbsp salt 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed fried shallots SPICE PASTE: 12 shallots, peeled and sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 4 red chilies 2.5 cm galangal (laos), peeled and sliced 2.5 cm kencur, peeled and sliced 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and sliced 2 tsp coriander, crushed 3 candlenuts 1 tsp dried shrimp paste ¼ tsp black peppercorns, crushed pinch of freshly grated nutmeg 2 cloves 3 tbsp oil PREPARATION: Cut the duck into 12 pieces and pat dry. Prepare the spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil. Heat the oil and sauté the spice paste for 2 minutes. Add the duck, increase heat and sauté for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the coconut milk and all ingredients except fried shallots and simmer, uncovered, until the duck is tender and the sauce has thickened. Garnish with fried shallots and serve with white rice. BUSINESS IMF’s Lipsky says moderate world recovery underway Reuters
GWANGJU - The world economy is recovering moderately but still faces challenges such as the need for medium-term fiscal consolidation, the IMF’s First Managing Director, John Lipsky, said on Sunday. “They are mainly confident that there is a moderate recovery underway globally,” he told reporters, referring to delegates at the G20 meeting of deputy finance and central bank chiefs in South Korea. “Obviously there are risks and challenges, but things seem to be moving more or less in line with our forecast,” he said, listing well-designed exit strategies and medium-term fiscal consolidation as challenges. He said some good progress has been made in discussing changes to the IMFs executive board, but did not elaborate. G20 members have pledged to reach an agreement on the issue by the time leaders meet in Seoul in November. The United States, frustrated at Europe’s refusal to share more IMF power with emerging economies, took unprecedented action last month to block plans that would have kept Europe’s long-running dominance over the 24-member board. Emerging economies have called for
a bigger say in international institutions such as the IMF in line with their increasing contribution to the global economy and the resultant importance in global economic policy coordination. A senior Indonesian official told Reuters separately that emerging economies want not only more voting power, but some readjustment in the way the global economic policy is made. “For emerging markets, the important thing is not only the size of the increase of the quota, but the general idea of the relationship between the quota and governance of the IMF — and that needs to come in one package,” Hartadi Sarwono, deputy governor of the Indonesian central bank, said in an interview. South Korea will host the November 11-12 summit of G20 leaders in Seoul, with key issues also including reforming the global financial regulatory framework and drawing up plans to put the world economy on a balanced and sustainable growth path.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., a local subsidiary of Suzuki, plans to construct the new plant in Manesar near its assembly base, with operation scheduled to begin in 2013, the Nikkei business daily said, quoting company sources. The plant, its third in Manesar, will be built at a cost of 30 billion yen (356 million dollars) with an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles, boosting Suzuki’s annual production in India to 1.7 million units, the daily said. Suzuki, one of the earliest foreign entrants into India’s auto market, has built a dominant position there, boasting a market share of nearly 50
percent, the newspaper said. Suzuki in 2007 launched an assembly plant in Manesar with an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles. It is now building its second factory on the same site, with an annual capacity set for 250,000 units. The second plant is not scheduled to come on stream until spring 2012, but surging demand in India prompted Suzuki managers to order a third site ahead of the launch of the second, the paper said. Popular subcompact models such as the Alto and Wagon R will likely be produced at the third facility, it added. Nearly two-thirds of Suzuki’s group operating profit is estimated to come from India. He hopes to gain some traction with impatient voters as they ponder whether to toss out his Democrats in the November 2 congressional elections. In his weekly radio and Web address, Obama pointed to measures funded by the Democrats’ $814 billion economic stimulus as responsible for halting the economic slide he faced when taking office in January 2009. This includes spending on roads and bridges and money given to local governments to avert layoffs of teachers, firefighters and police officers. “The steps we have taken to date have stopped the bleeding,” Obama said. “But strengthening our economy means more than that.” Other steps, he said, were aimed at helping the middle class, citing a portion of his U.S. healthcare overhaul that stopped insurance companies from refusing to cover people with pre-existing health conditions. Entertainment mogul Simon Fuller, creator of the British show “Pop Idol” that was the template for the U.S. series he produces, called DioGuardi a standout songwriter whom he planned to work with in music “for many years to come.” DioGuardi, whose exit had been rumored, is a hit machine whose songs have been recorded by Gwen Stefani, Faith Hill, Marc Anthony and others, including past “Idol” winners. “I felt like I won the lottery when I joined `American Idol’ two years ago, but I feel like now is the best time to leave `Idol,’” DioGuardi said in a statement Friday, calling her experience as a judge on the show “amazing.” Her statement, issued by Fox, didn’t elaborate on her reasons for leaving. Her contract reportedly had a
one-year option remaining that the network could have exercised. Although she offered informed critiques on “Idol,” observers faulted her for lacking the pizazz — and unpredictability — that exjudge Paula Abdul had provided. DioGuardi’s departure comes as the top-rated show continues auditions for its 10th season, which starts airing in January. LOS ANGELES – NBC might have summer’s most-watched show in “America’s Got Talent,” but the network’s late-night ratings aren’t so hot. “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” is pulling a smaller number among adults aged 18 to 49, an elusive demographic coveted by advertiser, than when Conan O’Brien hosted the show last year. In fact, this summer is the lowest-rated “Tonight Show” on record, though such feats have become increasingly common on broadcast across the board. Since the end of the broadcast season in May, Leno is averaging 3.8 million viewers and a 1.0 adults 1849 rating (each ratings point in that demo equals about 1.3 million viewers). That’s a 12 percent improvement in total audience compared with O’Brien, though off 23 percent
in the demo and down in both measurements compared with Leno’s performance two years ago. His percentages greatly improve if comparisons begin a few weeks deeper into the summer so “Tonight” is not facing O’Brien’s opening weeks hosting the show, though O’Brien is tops in the demo either way. Even with the reduced rating, Leno is back to beating his top rival, CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman,” by a healthy 22 percent in both metrics. CBS counters that Letterman’s ratings are at least holding steady compared with last summer, when Letterman hit an all-time low of his own. Other late-night hosts have been showing stability too, with NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” CBS’ “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” and ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” maintaining their
demo averages, and Fallon and Kimmel even sporting gains in total viewers. LOS BANOS, Philippines - The mobile phone may soon replace the centuries-old straw hat as the Filipino rice farmer’s must-have accessory. Already responsible for helping to topple a government in the Southeast Asian archipelago, mobile phone text messaging could now help launch a neat little agricultural revolution. “Precision agriculture could become available to small-scale farmers at their fingertips within a few minutes,” says Roland Buresh of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The institute develops new rice varieties and crop management techniques aimed at reducing poverty and ensuring that rice production is sustainable, has minimal environmental impact and can cope with climate change. The non-profit organisation, which has its headquarters at Los Banos near the Philiipines capital Manila, now hopes to harness the
country’s mobile-phone mania to bring cutting edge techniques to an ancient system. The Philippines has been called the texting capital of the world, with some 70 million mobile phone users sending up to 300 million messages a day. In 2001, texting was credited with helping topple then-president Joseph Estrada when it was used to bring tens of thousands of demonstrators onto the streets in protest over corruption. From this month, IRRI scientists led by Buresh plan to use text messaging to send precise management advice and fertilizer recommendations to local farmers by Interactive
Voice Response (IVR). All the farmer has to do is dial a number on his mobile phone, toll free. An automated voice message will then ask him a series of questions to which he should respond by pressing a number on the phone keypad. Once he has answered all the questions he will receive a text message with recommendations on the amounts, sources and timings of fertilizer applications for his specific rice paddy. The automated voice recording is available in English and Filipino and asks questions about the season, size of field, harvesting times and water supply. Project scientist Rowena Castillo says small-scale Philippines rice farmers have relied mainly on a trial-and-error approach to crop management. “In the past they’ve asked technicians (for advice) and (learnt from) their own experience,” Castillo told AFP in an interview.
CAPE TOWN - The French yacht Tara left Sunday on the second leg of a three-year expedition across the world’s oceans to chart the effects of climate change on micro-organisms which produce half our oxygen. The 36-metre (118-foot) schooner sailed from Cape Town a year after leaving Lorient in western France to head across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans for New Zealand next August as part of a 150,000-kilometre (93,750-mile) journey. “We are going to Ascension Island — we’ll be there in one month and then in Rio in the middle of October,” said captain Olivier Marien shortly ahead of the yacht’s departure. “We have a busy schedule on the way so we will make several stops. Tomorrow will be the first sampling off the South African waters.” The plankton-studying boat will then sail to Argentina and further south to Antarctica. The crew are collecting samples which are frozen onboard and sent to laboratories every month to map out a baseline for future climate studies. “We know now that the planet is changing, and the ocean is changing, and we expect much from the ocean to counterbalance what the humans are doing on the planet,” Philippe Koubbi, the chief scientist on board told AFP on Friday. “We know that some of the tiny plankton are threatened ... and we know that tiny animals or these tiny plants are very very important in controlling the balance in the ocean.” A bio-bank is being created from the research, ranging from viruses and bacteria to fish larvae, and more than 100 scientists are involved in the project. Plankton ecosystems are little known but the microorganisms absorb half of the world’s carbon production and produce as much oxygen as forests. “This is really what this expedition is really about — is really to look at this planktonic life which is really in the
open ocean, really controlling everything,” said Koubbi. A 13-person team will leave Cape Town, where the yacht spent time in dry-dock, with early spring making weather the main challenge and not threats such as sea pirates which were the main concern in the first leg. The return to ice will be familiar territory for the 1989-built vessel — now on its eighth scientific voyage — which was previously named Antarctica and ended a 507day Arctic trip in 2008. Next year Tara will also sail via Chile, Easter Island, the Galapagos Islands, the Clipperton Islands, the Marquesas Islands and Papeete. The first leg crossed the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. The project’s sponsors include the fashion house Agnes B. and global news agency Agence FrancePresse (AFP) is a media partner. The boat was previously owned by New Zealand yachtsman Sir Peter Blake who was murdered during a scientific expedition in the Amazon river in 2001.

VATICAN CITY - Heavy tourist traffic through the Sistine Chapel is endangering the world-reknowned frescoes decorating its walls, the head of the Vatican museums said on Friday. “Humans breathe and perspire and the dust and humidity endanger the frescoes,” the director of the Vatican Museums Antonio Paolucci told AFP. Paolucci said that each year, 4.5 million people — between 15,000 and 20,000 every day — visit the chapel. “Too much human presence is putting on pressure and we need to check
it carefully and effectively,” Paolucci said. Signs of danger for the frescoes, which include Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement” behind the altar and the nine scenes from the Book of Genesis he painted on the ceiling of the chapel, were detected this summer during a routine dusting. But Paolucci said the obvious solution, limiting the number of visitors, “would not be right” towards people who come from all over the world to admire the frescoes in the chapel, where the cardinals’ conclave gathers to elect the pope. On the contrary, the Vatican Museums have decided to open their doors to visitors also on Friday nights in
September and October. The Friday night openings “involve a limited number of people and allow to spread out the pressure,” Paolucci explained. He also ruled out a deep restoration of the chapel like the one that took place in the 1980s and 1990s. Paolucci called for “deploying for the conservation no less creativity and intelligence than that used by artists that created it.” “The means offered today by science and technology are potentially endless,” Paolucci said. “The money, we will find it. CLAIREFONTAINE, France - Florent Malouda says France’s players must harness the “hatred of defeat” as they try to regroup after falling to a shock defeat against Belarus in their Euro 2012 qualifying opener. Laurent Blanc’s depleted side went down 1-0 to Belarus, who are ranked 78th in the world, in Paris on Friday and now face an awkward trip to face Group D rivals Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday. NEW YORK - Top seed Caroline Wozniacki and former world number one Maria Sharapova booked a fourth-round showdown with straight-set US Open triumphs on Saturday while Roger Federer cruised into the last 16 as well. Danish 20-year-old Wozniacki, last year’s US Open runner-up, routed Taiwan’s Chan Yung-Jan 6-1, 6-0, while Russian 14th seed Sharapova, whose three Grand Slam titles include the 2006 US Open, blanked American Beatrice Capra 6-0, 6-0. Surprisingly, this time it was to apologize. “Forgive me for saying what I said,” Mayweather said in yet another video. “I was just having fun. I didn’t really mean it, nothing in a bad way.” Oh, what fun it was, for as long it lasted. Fighting words, from a man who refuses to fight. But, hey, what did you really expect from Money May? Not an apology, surely. With all the sycophants and yes men who surround Mayweather it’s a wonder he was able to figure out that this time he had crossed the line from fun to just plain disgusting. But if his idea was to get Pacquiao’s attention, he succeeded. Pacquiao sat in his hotel room in Texas and watched Mayweather unleash every derogatory Asian stereotype he could come up with. Then he pressed the play button to watch it once more, his expression never changing. The fighter in him probably wanted a shot at Mayweather right then and there. The politician in him thought better of it. “It’s an uneducated message,” the congressman from the province of Sarangani said. Pacquiao showed remarkable restraint, because it was far more than that. By proxy, Mayweather insulted an entire nation by going after the biggest sports hero the Philippines has ever known. Of course, it could happen only in boxing, which has a long and colorful history of fighters unloading verbal abuse.

Taking a slender one-point lead into the final quarter, Serbia threatened to run away with the game, only for Croatia to surge back into contention as Marko Popovic went on a final-quarter 14-point scoring spree to tie the teams up. He would finish with a game-high 21 points. When he landed a free-throw with five seconds remaining, the scores were tied at 72-72, but crucially it left the Serbians enough time to run one more offensive play. The play only half worked with Aleksandar Popovic missing his shot but he was able to draw the foul, sending him to the line for two free-throws with a second showing on the clock. Alexsandr Rasic made the first but missed the second with Croatia grabbing the rebound, but it was too late for the Croatians who could not get off a proper shot, giving the Serbians the win. Since returning from suspension Serbian captain Nenad Krstic of Oklahoma City Thunder has been integral for his team, leading with 16 points on Saturday. Following the game Serb coach Dusan Ivkovic spoke of the importance of Krstic. “Nenad has a big personality and is a very important part of the team. I think the last three games (since re-
turning from suspension) he has fought very hard and I wish for that to continue,” said the coach. Ivkovic was very proud of how well his young team fought. “In four days we have had three very tough games against Australia, Argentina and Croatia so I want to congratulate my players. The three days of rest now is very important,” he said. Greece’s inability to beat Spain in major tournaments continued as they again fell short against the European champions 80-72. Throughout the game Greece threatened to take the lead only to miss important baskets. Too many times they would run plays only for the resulting shot to miss. Spain were not making the same errors at the other end, doing enough throughout to maintain their lead. In the group stage play it had been Marc Gasol carrying the Spaniards which did not go unnoticed on the Greeks, who restricted him to just four points. Instead Portland Trailblazers Rudy Fernandez and Juan Carlos Navarro stepped up, scoring 22 and 14 points respectively. Spanish player Ricky Rubio (six points, six assists) talked of the respect his side hold for Serbia. “They are very young but very talented. Tonight they proved they are ambitious - it will be a strong rivalry.” The two sides meet in the first of the quarter-finals on Thursday.

MISANO, Italy - Spanish rider Toni Elias riding a Moriwaki won the San Marino Moto2 here on Sunday for his fourth successive victory in the category. The 27-year-old confirmed his place atop the overall standings with his sixth victory of the season beating home compatriot Julian Simon, riding a Suter, and Swiss Thomas Luthi on a Moriwaki was third.
Elias, who added a further 25 points to his advantage over second placed Andrea Iannone, was well clear when early pacesetter Shoya Tomizawa of Japan had a sickening crash. The Japanese rider had dropped back down the field but was still in the leading sextet when under pressure from the fast charging Italian Alex de Angelis he came off his bike on the track. Neither de Angelis nor British rider Scott Redding were able to
avoid hitting Tomizawa, who was propelled over 40 metres and off the track into the gravel. Both de Angelia and Redding appeared to be alright as they groggily got to their feet, but Tomizawa was immediately stretchered away to the medical centre. A MotoGp spokesman later told the BBC that the 19-year-old Tomizawa, winner of the season opening Qatar Grand Prix, had been taken to hospital 30 kilometres away and was undergoing further unspecified treatment. Japanese rider Shoya Tomizawa has died as a result of injuries sustained in today’s Moto2 race at Misano. The 19-year-old was running fourth when he crashed in front of Alex de Angelis and Scott Redding, and was hit at speed by both riders. He was taken to hospital in Riccione where he was pronounced dead at 14.21 local time. Tomizawa had been one of the sensations of the inaugural Moto2 season. He had been a frontrunner in Japanese 125cc and 250cc racing, but only had a handful of wildcard appearances and a season in the 250cc midfield under his belt on the world stage prior to 2010. He instantly took to Moto2, securing a historic victory for Technomag-CIP in the series’ first ever race in Qatar. Tomizawa proved that result was no one-off by staying with the frontrunners all season, taking pole positions at Jerez and Brno.
The 24-year-old Pedrosa started from pole and never relinquished his grip on the race and came home for his fourth victory of the campaign ahead of overall leader and compatriot Jorge Lorenzo on a Yamaha. Italy’s multi-time champion Valentino Rossi, also on a Yamaha, was third. Pedrosa’s victory keeps the pressure on Lorenzo - who had a 68point lead going into this race - for the overall title with six races left in the season. Pedrosa made no mistake at the start and it was Lorenzo instead who briefly lost his place as Casey Stoner passed him on the first corner although the Yamaha rider regained second spot by the end of the first lap. While Pedrosa opened a foursecond lead over Lorenzo with 17
laps to go, there was a terrific dingdong battle going on behind with Yamaha’s Rossi finally getting the better of Stoner on his Ducati, the team that the charismatic Italian will join next season. Stoner was falling down the field at an alarming rate as he was then passed easily by Italian Andrea Dovizioso. Loris Capirossi’s 200th Grand Prix in the elite class came to a anti-climactic end on only the second corner along with American Nicky Hayden, who exited at the same point last year. Capirossi stormed away wringing his hands in frustration and pain - as the accident saw his little finger ground down to the bone - having remonstrated at Hayden, who had caused the accident by edging out when there was no room and sending the Italian flying.
