Russia makes Steven Seagal special envoy to US to help thaw relations

MOSCOW - Russia has handed Hollywood movie star Steven Seagal the task of keeping relations cordial with the United States. The Russian foreign minister announced on Facebook that the actor will be its special envoy for humanitarian ties with the US. It said Seagal would “facilitate relations between Russia and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges”. The post is unpaid. The Hard To Kill action star is an accomplished martial artist, just like Russian president Vladimir Putin. American Seagal, whose grandparents were Russian Jews, was granted Russian citizenship in 2016. He has repeatedly defended Mr Putin’s policies, including the annexation of Crimea. And he has criticised the US government. Last year, Russian enemy Ukraine banned Seagal from entering the country for five years, citing national security reasons. (net)

65,000 Indonesians go loco for pocopoco in Asian Games record attempt

Indonesian president Joko Widodo led some 65,000 of his compatriots in a mass dance through the streets of Jakarta on Sunday to promote the Asian Games and try to set a world record along the way. Jakarta and the city of Palembang on Sumatra will jointly host Asia’s biggest sporting event from August 18 but President Widodo has previously complained about the lack of promotion and enthusiasm in the country. JJ Abrams apologises to Evangeline Lilly over semi-naked Lost scene

LOS ANGELES - JJ Abrams has apologised to Evangeline Lilly after she complained about being “cornered” into a partially nude scene on Lost. Lilly, 38, played the character Kate Austen in the TV show from 2004 to 2010 - but told a podcast last week of her difficulties with the producers. Two of the show’s creators, Abrams and Damon Lindelof, have indirectly apologised to her, although they said they’re not sure if their message has got through. “Our response to Evie’s comments this morning in the media was to immediately reach out to her to profoundly apologise for

the experience she detailed while working on Lost,” they said in a statement. “We have not yet connected with her, but remain deeply and sincerely sorry. No person should ever feel unsafe at work. Period.” Speaking on a podcast, Lilly said: “In season three, I’d had a bad experience on set with being basically cornered into doing a scene partially naked, and I felt had no choice in the matter. “And I was mortified and I was

trembling and when it finished, I was crying my eyes out and I had to go on do a very formidable, very strong scene thereafter. “In season four, another scene came up where Kate was undressing and I fought very hard to have that scene be under my control and I failed to control it again. “And so I then said, ‘That’s it, no more. Sacred Wayang wong of Tejakula

Well known in Asia and Europe, survives in magical way

TEJAKULA village, Tejakula, Buleleng, is the birthplace of the wayang wong (human puppet—Ed) art in Bali. Over the years, this art born out of the combination of Parwa and Gambuh arts, has experiences its ups and downs. Fortunately Wayang Wong has managed to be sustained and has even become known in parts of South East Asia and Europe which many attribute to the strength of this heritage that carries a magical aura. This art is estimated to have been born in the mid-17th century through a sacred birth process. Through trance experiences by supporting devotees and confidants of the deities abiding in the Tejakula clan temple, the deities requested that wayang wong be performed in a number of other temples in the territory of Tejakula customary village. After getting a magical signal, artists in Tejakula customary village gathered and agreed to establish the wayang wong art. Art figure I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik, a traditional artist, came to Tejakula in the 16th century, while I Dewa Batan, another artist, came to Tejakula in the 15th century.

These two artists are believed to have played important roles in the birth of the wayang wong art in Tejakula. Both artists also made wooden masks representing figures from the Ramayana epics. There were 175 masks made at that time. Until now, the clan temple regularly holds their temple festival (piodalan) with the accompaniment of a wayang wong performance inherited from generation to generation. This sacredness has allowed the wayang wong of Tejakula to be named as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. One of the artists who witnessed the creation of the way-

ang wong of Tejakula is Gede Putu Tirta Ngis, a 72 year old resident of Tegal Semaga hamlet, Tejakula. When met recently, the man who is familiarly called Putu Ngis has deeply involved in the sacred arts since 1975 and until now he is still actively plays the wayang wong. He is also known to be an expert in playing all the characters of this art. In fact Putu Ngis did not know his relatives that had danced wayang wong but he is fact a descendant of I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik who is known to be one of the artists who helped create the wayang wong art. “During the period of 1975 to

1985, I learned to play wayang wong. The process of learning involved dancing, performing and watching other perform. Eventually I was able to play all wayang wong figures”, he said. According to Jelantik, the wayang wong of Tejakula is indeed a very old cultural heritage with hundreds of masks representing several groups of characters and include masks of Sugriwa, Rama, Laksamana, Wibisana, servant, Rahwana, Kumbakarna and giants. Hundreds of masks are now neatly stored at the clan (Maksan) temple of Tejakula. The masks that are estimated to have be 3 and half centuries old are still well preserved and are only used on special occasions like the Tejakula customary village, by the members of the wayang wong troupe of Tejakula that consists of 300 people. This sacred art can only be

staged at particular times and places such as large ceremonies like at ngenteg linggih and piodalan at Danka Temple. Before the masks are used, special rituals like bakti pamungkah are are performed at Maksan Temple. This sacred wayang wong dance must be played it’s full form and cannot be broken up into parts. “During the piodalan at the Desa Temple of Tejakula, the first part of the Ramayana epic is played then followed by the second part and so on. Once completed the story starts again”, he explained. Through the generations Since its creation, the wayang wong has remained sacred over the generations. Sometimes without having learned the dance, if someone has been psychically appointed, they are automatically able to dance like the other dancers who have been practicing. Gede Komang, another wayang wong artist who is known as a senior figure of this art form explained that some dancers inherit their talent form bloodlines other than those that have wayang wong dancers. Komang himself had never danced the wayang wong, but one day in the 1990’s he dreamt of the dance even though he had rarely ever seen it performed since he worked in East Timor. But since it time to dance, he danced. It is believed that if someone has been chosen to dance the wayang wong dance and refuses, bad things will happen to them. He cited the example of a family member who had been suffering paralysis and could not be cured. After consulting a medium, the family member was told to join a wayang wong troupe. After requesting holy water from Maksan Temple, they completed recovered. It is a commonly held belief that one must not reject the invitation to become a wayang wong dancer. “We have confidence that when it’s time, I will join to dance. If I try to reject this we believe something bad will happen- possibly continuous nitemares or chronic illness. This is a believe and indeed it happens to us”, he explained. (mud)

Ubud Village Jazz Festival August 10-11th

Bringing the world to Bali and Bali to the world

The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is headed into its sixth year as it opens to the public on August 10-11. As in previous years, the highly acclaimed festival will host a roaster of great talents from Bali, Indonesia and abroad, with Arma Museum and Resort serving as the venue.

Every Bond story features a masterly villain with ambitions of world domination, but few are so iconic as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Most recently portrayed by Christoph Waltz in Spectre, Blofeld has appeared in seven other Bond films and is often seen stroking his white Persian cat in evil contemplation. One such appearance is in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, one of the more divisive Bond films thanks to its leading man, George Lazenby, who played the role of 007 just the once. Although the 1969 film received a lukewarm reception from critics, many consider it to be one of the best in the series, in part because of its spectacular scenery. The site of Blofeld’s secret lair, Piz Gloria, is atop the 2,970m summit of the Schilthorn in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps. This is one of the only places in the world where the public can experience a Bond film set up close and personal. The story of Piz Gloria While searching for the ideal film location for Blofeld’s lair, the production team came across a partly constructed sports bar with a revolving floor on the Schilthorn summit. Set against a backdrop of dramatic, snow-topped mountains, which includes the indomitable Eiger, it seemed the perfect setting for a villainous plot. The film’s producer agreed to finance its completion in exchange for exclusive filming rights. Since filming ended, the building has retained its Piz Gloria moniker, taking full advantage of the Bond connection. The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows and revolves a full 360 degrees in 55 minutes. The family friendly menu includes the fan favourite “007 burger” complete with a 007

stamped logo on the bun. As well as a restaurant, there is also a permanent exhibition containing Bond memorabilia and film clips on the lower floor. While this could seem a little corny, the “Bond World” exhibition is actually very well presented, with a great selection of iconic Bond posters, part of the helicopter used in the film and various interactive games and entertainment. Outdoor adventures As you exit the cable car at the top of the Schilthorn, you are immediately presented with some rather spectacular views of the mountains surrounding the region. This includes the Jungfrau, Eiger and Jura Mountains. On a clear day, you can also see Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. There is a large, open area covered with tables and chairs, where you can relax with a cocktail and enjoy the views. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can take part in the “thrill walk”, a 200m long steel and glass walkway that hugs the rock and leads to the cable car station. Not one for vertigo sufferers, the walkway is both narrow and high, but you are rewarded with uninterrupted views of the valley of Lauterbrunnen. You can also channel your inner Bond and attempt to crawl though an (optional) eight-metre tunnel with clear views of the 250m drop below. If you haven’t had enough of 007 by now, there is a new exhibition outside called the “007 Walk of Fame”: a series of statues featuring handprints of the film’s cast and crew and information about their time on set. The opening event in 2015 was attended by George Lazenby himself. (net)

Despite having a wide range of sponsors supporting this tribute to jazz in Ubud, due the large costs involved in the production, staging and the considerable cost of having renowned foreign musicians play at the festival, receiving the contribution of finding from BEKRAF has allowed the Ubud Village Jazz Festival to increase the overall quality of the experience of those who attend. “While Arma is already an extremely pleasant venue with distinct touches of Balinese aesthetics and lots of greenery, it is always a challenge to create a new atmosphere from year to year. In fact each year it is harder because we want it to be different that it has ever been before, integrate video mapping that is minimalist enough to not distract from attention to the music, while still maintaining the general them of “Balinese village”, with all natural materials, like palm leaf and bamboo”, explained architect and designer Diana Surya who added that co-desiger Putu “Klick” Swantara had pulled out all the stops in this year’s design with Luden House’s Gede Sayur Suanda adding a special touch. This year’s edition features the theme “freedom of expression”, referring to the roots of jazz as a musical genre. As festival co-organizer, artistic director and jazz addict Yuri Mahatma explained during a recent press conference at Rumah Sanur: “jazz is a particular genre of music that is indeed rooted in freedom of expression, this does not however mean that any from of musical sounds played freely constiutes jazz – such an understanding would imply a great disrespect for the countless hours that jazz musicians spend honing their skills. Here “freedom of expression” refers to the vast range of possibilities of this freedom-based genre”. Rumah Sanur also hosts a weekly Jazz event entitled ‘Jazz Under the Tree”, which has gained increasing popularity since it began a couple of years ago. And although there are a few other venues in Bali that hold regular jazz events, as festival founder and co-organiser and Chairman A. A Anom Wirajaya Darsana of Antida Productions explained: “one of the main inspirations for the Ubud Village Jazz Festival is to provide the Balinese public with exposure to great Jazz talents from here an abroad. Bali has some exceptionally talented Jazz musicians too but they are rarely given the stage. So although it is great that this festival provides a boost to tourism in Bali, and allows Bali’s music scene to become known to other parts of the world, what gives me the most joy personally is knowing that all this great talent can be even more enriched by the exchange that takes place during the UVJF. It is truly a labor of love for everyone involved in the production”. The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is also offering two day of pre-event workshops taught by both local international musicians appearing in the festival. The workshop will be held on August 8th-9th and will be taking place in Denpasar, Karangasem, Canggu, Kuta, Jumbaran, Sanur and Pengosekan. As local jazz luminary Jeko Fauzy said, “I am really excited about some of the musicians who will be playing this year. I definitely plan to attend the workshop that Benny Green will be giving as part of the UVJV pre-events. Even though I give my heart and soul to my craft anyway, having such amazing musicians play here really inspires me to step up my game”. “I am of course a big fan of jazz music in general and love singing jazz classics, but what I really love about the Ubud Village Jazz Festival is that it reminds us all that jazz is fun”, replied Bali-based, Malang born up and coming jazz vocalist Qee-Qee who performed a few soul soothing songs during the press conference. The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is the larger festival in South-East Asia that is dedicated entirely to the musical genre of Jazz and in the short time since it was born, it has already proven to be must for Jazz lovers from around the world and has more firmly anchored Ubud as a culturally rich tourist destination.(kmb)

Farmers turn prosperous if people use local products

DENPASAR - Who is wrong if farmers do not prosper? It can be the fault of farmers or the government, but the community also has a big contribution to the welfare of farmers. People becoming the users of agricultural products are expected to use as much local fruit as possible to meet their needs, so that local farmers can prosper. The owner of UD Sari Buah, Made Sianta, hoped there are rules requiring people to use local fruits. He considered the competition in agriculture does not come from outside Bali (Indonesia) but from overseas with the entry of imported fruits. This farmer from Padangan village, Pupuan, Tabanan, is also a salesperson of his colleagues coalesced into the farmer group. Based on experience, he considered it really difficult to market the products if the rules on local fruit use are tightened. He used to supply fruits to hotels and supermarkets. Of the two modern markets, the fees obtained can be greater than the sales to traditional markets. However, the payment system in hotels and supermarkets is rather difficult for farmers. Supermarkets usually pay farmers after two weeks while hotel takes longer, where the payment is settled after one month. This is one of the obstacles faced by farmers, namely capital. To be able to supply fruits and vegetables to hotels and supermarkets every day, he must have enough capital to support the production. Within two weeks to one month, there is no income obtained for the operational turnover of the business. In addition, during the harvest season, the fruit is abundant. Farmers will turn worried because the price of fruits can go down in harmony with the abundant supplies. Fruits will be valued cheaply and sometimes does not cover the operational costs of farmers.

Moreover, mangosteen harvest will start next three months. Abundant mangosteen is expected to get absorbed in the market. He really hoped the government can help smooth the mangosteen exports so that farmers do not waste their production. An economic observer, Viraguna Bagoes Oka, said that so far the agricultural development in Bali is only short-term, not longterm oriented. Thus, it cannot be enjoyed, and prosper farmers in the long run. In addition, it has difficulty in terms of human resources. Human resources in farming sector are gradually decreasing. This is the result of a human resource mindset oriented to an instant and factual profession, namely working in the bureaucracy and tourism. “Such orientation remains prominent. This mindset causes the agricultural sector to require patience, fighting power, determination to produce optimally and really that takes a long time to produce results,” he explained. Over the past ten years, the government has prioritized short-term aspects. Working patterns and results are seen in the short term. So, the sector requiring a long oriented foundation is less considered. For example, the infrastructure is very alarming. The traffic of goods from village to city or from city to city is very inefficient. Inevitably, the factor of production is burdened by transportation costs. Similarly, there is no agricultural management from the upstream to downstream. Necessarily it should be managed well and continuously. “Thus, what produced in the upstream is absorbed by the market. Since the infrastructure is not supportive, the production is partially taken from other places that are also costly. On that account, Bali is 70 percent dependent on outside Bali for eight basic commodities,” he explained. (kmb42)

DENPASAR - Wayang wong ballet is one of the Balinese traditional dances included in the genre of bebali or semi-sacred dance. In 2015, wayang wong together with eight other traditional dances was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO. After the recognition, the government has the duty to maintain and preserve the wayang wong. One of them is by keeping the dancer’s regeneration process so as not to get disconnected from time to time. “We’ve obliged the regeneration process so that the nine Balinese dances included in the three genres (including wayang wong—Ed) must always be presented in every parade of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). Then, we also perform wayang wong in the BAF and Bali Mandara Mahalango activities,” said the Head of the Bali Culture Office, Dewa Putu Beratha, when confirmed on Saturday (Aug. 4). According to Beratha, wayang wong is one of the arts almost coming into extinction in several places. Nevertheless, it remains well preserved and made sacred like the wayang wong of Tejakula (Buleleng) and the one at Pucak Kembar Temple, Tabanan. However, some may be allowed to be staged by using duplicates of the original masks of the wayang wong. CARACAS - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he was “more determined than ever” after he escaped an “assassination” attempt using an explosive-laden drone as he gave a speech during a Caracas military parade. The government said seven soldiers were wounded in the alleged attack Saturday, blamed on Colombia by Maduro and later claimed by a mysterious rebel group. “I am fine, I am alive, and after this attack I’m more determined than ever to follow the path of the revolution,” Maduro said defiantly of the incident, from which he escaped unharmed. “Justice! Maximum punishment! And there will be no forgiveness,” he warned in an address to the nation, sparking fears of an anti-

opposition offensive in a country already reportedly holding some 248 political prisoners. Meanwhile, Attorney General Tarek William Saab, also present at the parade, said those arrested in connection with the incident would be identified on Monday. “There will be a ruthless punishment,” he said. Venezuelan state television images showed Maduro looking up disconcertedly in the middle of a speech having heard a bang, before members of the country’s National Guard lined up in the parade suddenly scattered. “It was an attack to kill me, they tried to assassinate me today,” he said in a state broadcast, speaking of a “flying object (that) exploded in front of me.”

Communication Minister Jorge Rodriguez said there was “an explosive charge... detonated close to the presidential podium” and in several other spots along the parade held in central Caracas. Saab told CNN he saw a drone filming the event explode. No drones could be seen in the television broadcast, which showed bodyguards jumping in front of Maduro to protect him with flexible ballistic shields. The broadcast was quickly cut. Meanwhile, a policeman who requested anonymity told AFP that drones may have been released from a nearby apartment that suffered a fire after one exploded. Will economic boom complicate curbing immigration? With the number of jobs available exceeding the number of Americans seeking jobs, employers are looking beyond the border to fill openings, and migrants are coming to the country in search of work. Hotel and restaurant owner Todd Callewaert is short more than two dozen workers this season for his Mackinac Island, Michigan, businesses. “You can’t hire a line cook right now, it’s impossible, even for 20 bucks an hour,” he said. “We usually fill the gap with visa workers, but we can’t even get those this year.” The Labor Department said Friday the unemployment rate was 3.9 percent, near the 18-year low set in May, and employers are adding jobs at a faster pace than last year. Trump has made clear employers should be trying to attract American workers through wage increases and other incentives, not filling jobs with immigrants. “Curbing immigration is essential to growing wages and ensuring available jobs go to American workers, not foreign workers,” Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley told AP. “As immigration curbs are put into place, more and more Americans will be absorbed back into the workforce, especially those who have been left out due to poor work history or difficult life circumstances.” The administration has made it harder to come to the U.S. for work, legally or otherwise. Work visas are costly, complicated and limited. Large-scale, job-seeking migration through a porous border is long gone. This summer, the administration tried to deter would-be immigrants by adopting a “zero-tolerance” policy, prosecuting anyone caught crossing the border illegally. It resulted in nearly 3,000 children separated from their parents at the border, prompting international outrage. Trump eventually stopped the separations and the government was forced by a judge to reunify families. Still, tens of thousands of people cross the border illegally every month, many seeking asylum from violence. But often, they’re coming because of the prospect of work. Dala Edilson Ba Juc traveled with his 12-year-old daughter from Guatemala to the U.S. — only to be separated from her at the border, reunited and deported home. Sitting at an immigration facility in Guatemala City, he said they came for work. “I needed to try to make a better life for my family — I wanted them to have what I could not give them here,” he said. “There are many, many jobs in the States.”

Dave Brat, R-Virginia., a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said he did not think the lower unemployment rate would weaken efforts to restrict illegal immigration. “The irony is it makes it more transparent what the real problem of the labor market is,” Brat said, citing about 10 million Americans not in the labor force. He called for improved education and imposing work requirements on food stamp recipients to get more of these Americans in the workforce. “The answer is not to bring in 10 million folks from abroad,” Brat said. The beauty of togetherness The long history of cultural, religious, political, artistic and trade relations between Indonesia and China date back over half a millennium and continue to have profound influences on both countries. Though mostly harmonious these relations have also been marked by some deeply troubling events and as a consequence some less than harmonious attitudes and actions have occurred over the years often eclipsing the generally positive interactions that in fact flourish in day-to-day relations. Bali has a particularly close relationship with Chinese culture that began long ago but is perhaps most notably described in the love story that took place in the 12th century between Balinese King Jaya Pangus of Kintamani and Chinese princess Kang Cing Wie of the Kang Dynasty that continues to resonate to this very day. There are various renditions of the story but in essence they fell madly in love and the cultural influences that the Chinese princess brought with her have become part of Balinese culture in general with particular influence in the area of Kintamani where this legendary couple lived. There were of course many Chinese merchants and cultural envoys visiting Bali and other parts of Indonesia before and after this story, however certain distinct influences like the use of pis bolong (chinese coins) and the barong landung (chinese style barong) and other influences from Chinese culture took root with this couple and have made their way all over the island and have become integrated into Balinese culture. On July 25th, 2018 Neka Museum in collaboration with artist community Segara Lor from Udiksnas University opened an exhibition entitled “Galungan Cina” in celebration of the harmonious relations between these two cultures. According to some accounts, what has become one of Bali’s most important religious holidays – Galungan and Kuningan was born out of the love story between King Jaya Pangus and princess Kang Cing Wie. As curator and cultural art historian I Made Susanta Dwitanaya explained: “the title of the exhibition was chosen as a way to show how Balinese culture is one that is based on inclusion rather than exclusion, whereby influences from other cultures – in this case Chinese culture, are not feared, rejected or vilified but rather considered as enriching and incorporated into the broader world view of Balinese culture itself”. Segara Lor invited guest artist Tien Hong to join them in this exhibition as a Balinese painter whose family descends from China. Hong is from Desa Lampu, Kintamani where the majority of residents are also of Chinese descent. His family and neighbors have been living in Bali for many generations and although they acknowledge their roots in China and maintain certain traditions, they also practice Balinese religious and cultural customs. “Yes I am of Chinese descent but I am also very much Balinese.

All of the works in the exhibition refer in some way to the influence of Chinese culture in Bali, whether tangible or intangible and pay tribute the wealth that comes from such cultural interactions. The high quality and great diversity of the works themselves also echoes the distinct ability of Balinese culture in particular and Indonesian culture in general to allow for great diversity while preserving a fundamental identity. It is perhaps this ability to remain coherent while embracing difference that defines the unusually beautiful identity of this island and the nation of which it is part. “Neka Museum is dedicated to supporting local, national and international artists of note and we are especially pleased to welcome

Chip labour: Robots replace waiters in China restaurant The futuristic restaurant concept is the latest initiative in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s push to modernise service and retail in a country where robotics and artificial intelligence are increasingly being integrated into commerce. Raising efficiency and lowering labour costs are the objectives at Alibaba’s “Robot.He” diners, where waiters have been replaced by robots about the size of microwave ovens, which roll around the dining room on table-high runways. “In Shanghai, a waiter costs up to 10,000 yuan ($1,500) per month. That’s hundreds of thousands in cost every year. And two shifts of people are needed,” said Cao Haitao, the Alibaba product manager who

developed the concept. “But we don’t need two shifts for robots and they are on duty every day.” The diners are attached to Alibaba’s new Hema chain of semi-automated supermarkets, where grocery shoppers fill their “carts” on a mobile app and have the merchandise brought to them at checkout via conveyor tracks on the ceiling, or delivered straight to their homes. Alibaba now has 57 Hema markets in 13 Chinese cities, all of which will eventually feature the robotic restaurants. Ambassador Maftuh voiced his aspiration while speaking at a prestigious academic forum held by the Saudi Arabian Journalists Forum “SIHAFIYYUN” at the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce Building, Saudi Arabia, recently. “During the forum, I explained about the waiting period for Hajj in Indonesia, which can be up to 20 years. At the forum, I seek an additional quota of 30 thousand for pilgrims during next year’s hajj season, with a better design to improve the accommodation capacity in Mina,” Ambassador Agus Maftuh informed Antara via a short message service received here on Saturday. The Indonesian ambassador became one of the speakers at the international seminars themed “al Mamlakah, Masirah Tarikh fi Khidmah dhutuf ar-Rahman” or “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Travel and History in Serving the Guests of Allah” that examined the management of Hajj. At the seminar, the Indonesian ambassador lauded the Government of Saudi Arabia for the facilities and services provided to Indonesian pilgrims and extraordinary welcome ceremonies by the Kingdom to the pilgrims not existing earlier. He explained that the additional quota is expected to increase the number of Indonesian pilgrims to 250 thousand, so it could shorten the waiting time for Hajj departures. According to the ambassador, the increase in the quota has not been in line with the improvement in capacity accommodation in Mina. Several solutions exist to solve the accommodation problems in Mina that can currently only provide 0.9 square meters per person. The solution is building multi-storey camps in Mina, utilizing hotels located close to Mina, and providing campsites outside Mina, with adequate access to Mina. Meanwhile, Prince Faisal bin Sultan Al Saud, who spoke at the forum, also lauded Indonesia for having sound coordination with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. According to the prince, such efforts made Indonesians known as the most disciplined and obedient pilgrims to the rules set by the Saudi Government. Prince Faisal also emphasized that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is serious about providing services to all pilgrims from around the world and preparing various infrastructure to provide comfort for the guests of Allah, in which the number of Indonesian pilgrims is the largest in the world. Belinda Lopez told The Associated Press she was detained on arrival in Bali on Friday and has been informed she’ll be deported on a 10 p.m. flight Saturday. She said immigration officials wanted to know if she was a journalist and repeatedly asked her if she had “done something bad to Indonesia.” Almost a decade ago she was an editor for English-language newspapers in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, and has produced podcasts for Australia’s state broadcaster. A freelance journalism site says she won awards in 2012 and 2013 for reporting, including a report on juvenile incarceration in the U.S. She is currently a Ph.D student at Sydney’s Macquarie University, studying the cultural experiences of migrants to Java, Indonesia’s most populous island. Being deported is “devastating,” Lopez said. “It’s the first place I moved to as an adult, have visited so many times since, to learn the language and to visit people who have become some of my best friends in the world,” she said in a WhatsApp message. The $250 million Equanimity is on its way to a border location where it will be transferred to Malaysia, said Daniel Silitonga, deputy director of economic crimes at Indonesia’s national police. He said the yacht is currently near Batam island close to Singapore, but declined to say when or where the transfer will happen. Indonesian police working with the FBI seized the yacht off Bali in February but faced a legal challenge from a Cayman Islands company registered as its owner. The U.S. Justice Department, one of several foreign agencies investigating the alleged multibillion dollar looting of the 1MDB state fund by associates of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, had listed the yacht among the assets it could seize and sell to recover stolen funds. “We will hand over the yacht soon,” Silitonga said. “Special arrangements have been made by the two countries based on good relations.”

At the time of the seizure, Malaysia was not cooperating with international investigations into 1MDB. But the massive corruption scandal in May led to the electoral defeat of Najib, who is now facing charges. Malaysian and international authorities want to question Malaysian financier Jho Low, who the Justice Department alleges was a key figure in the theft and international laundering of $4.5 billion from 1MDB. Low, who has so far evaded investigators, issued a statement through his U.S. attorney on Sunday, protesting the handover of the yacht. “Actions like this make it increasingly clear that there is no jurisdiction where the issues in this case can be subject to a fair hearing, thanks to a global media circus fueled by politically motivated parties whose aim is to convict Mr. Low in the public arena,” the statement said. NANJING - Carolina Marin claimed a slice of history as the Spaniard became the first woman to win three badminton world titles with an emphatic victory over P.V. Sindhu of India on Sunday. The aggressive Marin is now the reigning world and Olympic champion thanks to an imperious 21-19, 21-10 win in Nanjing. The all-action 25-year-old adds the 2018 crown to her titles in 2014 and 2015, and the Olympic gold she won from the unlucky Sindhu at Rio 2016. It was more disappointment for Sindhu, who has suffered a string of near-misses in recent times. There was nothing between the pair coming into the final in Nanjing -- in their 12 previous encounters they had won six each. NEW YORK - Unbeaten Eleider Alvarez stunned Sergey Kovalev on Saturday, knocking the Russian champion down three times in the seventh round to capture the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight title. Alvarez hit Kovalev with a powerful combination that sent him to the canvas for the final knockdown of the fight at 2:45 of the seventh to give the Colombian his first world title. “I just can’t describe how I feel,” Alvarez said. “I wanted to show him that I am strong, I have a good chin and am ready for big things.” The 35-year-old Kovalev was trying to re-establish his dominance in the light heavyweight division in his first real boxing test since

NANJING - Carolina Marin claimed a slice of history as the Spaniard became the first woman to win three badminton world titles with an emphatic victory over P.V. Sindhu of India on Sunday. The aggressive Marin is now the reigning world and Olympic champion thanks to an imperious 21-19, 21-10 win in Nanjing. The all-action 25-year-old adds the 2018 crown to her titles in 2014 and 2015, and the Olympic gold she won from the unlucky Sindhu at Rio 2016. It was more disappointment for Sindhu, who has suffered a string of near-misses in recent times. NEW YORK - Unbeaten Eleider Alvarez stunned Sergey Kovalev on Saturday, knocking the Russian champion down three times in the seventh round to capture the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight title. Alvarez hit Kovalev with a powerful combination that sent him to the canvas for the final knockdown of the fight at 2:45 of the seventh to give the Colombian his first world title. “I just can’t describe how I feel,” Alvarez said. “I wanted to show him that I am strong, I have a good chin and am ready for big things.” The 35-year-old Kovalev was trying to re-establish his dominance in the light heavyweight division in his first real boxing test since

Kovalev was taken to the hospital after the fight to receive medical treatment. “I feel OK. Thank you everyone, thank you very much to all the fans around the world for your support,” Kovalev said. “I love you, and I’m fine.” It may have hurt Kovalev that his two most recent fights -- after losing his titles to Ward -- were victories over weak opponents. Chip labour: Robots replace waiters in China restaurant The futuristic restaurant concept is the latest initiative in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s push to modernise service and retail in a country where robotics and artificial intelligence are increasingly being integrated into commerce. Raising efficiency and lowering labour costs are the objectives at Alibaba’s “Robot.He” diners, where waiters have been replaced by robots about the size of microwave ovens, which roll around the dining room on table-high runways. “In Shanghai, a waiter costs up to 10,000 yuan ($1,500) per month. That’s hundreds of thousands in cost every year. And two shifts of people are needed,” said Cao Haitao, the Alibaba product manager who

developed the concept. “But we don’t need two shifts for robots and they are on duty every day.” The diners are attached to Alibaba’s new Hema chain of semi-automated supermarkets, where grocery shoppers fill their “carts” on a mobile app and have the merchandise brought to them at checkout via conveyor tracks on the ceiling, or delivered straight to their homes. Alibaba now has 57 Hema markets in 13 Chinese cities, all of which will eventually feature the robotic restaurants. JAKARTA - Indonesian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Agus Maftuh Abegebriel expects the additional quota for Indonesian hajj pilgrims to reach 250 thousand during the hajj season next year. Ambassador Maftuh voiced his aspiration while speaking at a prestigious academic forum held by the Saudi Arabian Journalists Forum “SIHAFIYYUN” at the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce Building, Saudi Arabia, recently. “During the forum, I explained about the waiting period for Hajj in Indonesia, which can be up to 20 years. At the forum, I seek an additional quota of 30 thousand for pilgrims during next year’s hajj season, with a better design to improve the accommodation capacity in Mina,” Ambassador Agus Maftuh informed Antara via a short message service received here on Saturday. The Indonesian ambassador became one of the speakers at the international seminars themed “al Mamlakah, Masirah Tarikh fi Khidmah dhutuf ar-Rahman” or “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Travel and History in Serving the Guests of Allah” that examined the management of Hajj. At the seminar, the Indonesian ambassador lauded the Government of Saudi Arabia for the facilities and services provided to Indonesian pilgrims and extraordinary welcome ceremonies by the Kingdom to the pilgrims not existing earlier. He explained that the additional quota is expected to increase the number of Indonesian pilgrims to 250 thousand, so it could shorten the waiting time for Hajj departures. According to the ambassador, the increase in the quota has not been in line with the improvement in capacity accommodation in Mina. Several solutions exist to solve the accommodation problems in Mina that can currently only provide 0.9 square meters per person. The solution is building multi-storey camps in Mina, utilizing hotels located close to Mina, and providing campsites outside Mina, with adequate access to Mina. Meanwhile, Prince Faisal bin Sultan Al Saud, who spoke at the forum, also lauded Indonesia for having sound coordination with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. According to the prince, such efforts made Indonesians known as the most disciplined and obedient pilgrims to the rules set by the Saudi Government. Prince Faisal also emphasized that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is serious about providing services to all pilgrims from around the world and preparing various infrastructure to provide comfort for the guests of Allah, in which the number of Indonesian pilgrims is the largest in the world. JAKARTA — An Australian graduate student whose honeymoon plans in Indonesia included a cultural festival in the insecure Papua region says she’s being deported after officials accused her of being a journalist. Belinda Lopez told The Associated Press she was detained on arrival in Bali on Friday and has been informed she’ll be deported on a 10 p.m. flight Saturday. She said immigration officials wanted to know if she was a journalist and repeatedly asked her if she had “done something bad to Indonesia.” Almost a decade ago she was an editor for English-language newspapers in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, and has produced podcasts for Australia’s state broadcaster. A freelance journalism site says she won awards in 2012 and 2013 for reporting, including a report on juvenile incarceration in the U.S. She is currently a Ph.D student at Sydney’s Macquarie University, studying the cultural experiences of migrants to Java, Indonesia’s most populous island. Being deported is “devastating,” Lopez said. “It’s the first place I moved to as an adult, have visited so many times since, to learn the language and to visit people who have become some of my best friends in the world,” she said in a WhatsApp message. The $250 million Equanimity is on its way to a border location where it will be transferred to Malaysia, said Daniel Silitonga, deputy director of economic crimes at Indonesia’s national police. He said the yacht is currently near Batam island close to Singapore, but declined to say when or where the transfer will happen. Indonesian police working with the FBI seized the yacht off Bali in February but faced a legal challenge from a Cayman Islands company registered as its owner. The U.S. Justice Department, one of several foreign agencies investigating the alleged multibillion dollar looting of the 1MDB state fund by associates of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, had listed the yacht among the assets it could seize and sell to recover stolen funds. “We will hand over the yacht soon,” Silitonga said. “Special arrangements have been made by the two countries based on good relations.”

At the time of the seizure, Malaysia was not cooperating with international investigations into 1MDB. But the massive corruption scandal in May led to the electoral defeat of Najib, who is now facing charges. Malaysian and international authorities want to question Malaysian financier Jho Low, who the Justice Department alleges was a key figure in the theft and international laundering of $4.5 billion from 1MDB. Low, who has so far evaded investigators, issued a statement through his U.S. attorney on Sunday, protesting the handover of the yacht. “Actions like this make it increasingly clear that there is no jurisdiction where the issues in this case can be subject to a fair hearing, thanks to a global media circus fueled by politically motivated parties whose aim is to convict Mr. Low in the public arena,” the statement said. The Equanimity’s lavish amenities include a helicopter landing pad, plunge pool, gymnasium and a cinema. Will economic boom complicate curbing immigration? With the number of jobs available exceeding the number of Americans seeking jobs, employers are looking beyond the border to fill openings, and migrants are coming to the country in search of work. Hotel and restaurant owner Todd Callewaert is short more than two dozen workers this season for his Mackinac Island, Michigan, businesses. “You can’t hire a line cook right now, it’s impossible, even for 20 bucks an hour,” he said. “We usually fill the gap with visa workers, but we can’t even get those this year.” The Labor Department said Friday the unemployment rate was 3.9 percent, near the 18-year low set in May, and employers are adding jobs at a faster pace than last year. Trump has made clear employers should be trying to attract American workers through wage increases and other incentives, not filling jobs with immigrants. “Curbing immigration is essential to growing wages and ensuring available jobs go to American workers, not foreign workers,” Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley told AP. “As immigration curbs are put into place, more and more Americans will be absorbed back into the workforce, especially those who have been left out due to poor work history or difficult life circumstances.” The administration has made it harder to come to the U.S. for work, legally or otherwise. Work visas are costly, complicated and limited. Large-scale, job-seeking migration through a porous border is long gone. This summer, the administration tried to deter would-be immigrants by adopting a “zero-tolerance” policy, prosecuting anyone caught crossing the border illegally. It resulted in nearly 3,000 children separated from their parents at the border, prompting international outrage. Trump eventually stopped the separations and the government was forced by a judge to reunify families. Still, tens of thousands of people cross the border illegally every month, many seeking asylum from violence. But often, they’re coming because of the prospect of work. Dala Edilson Ba Juc traveled with his 12-year-old daughter from Guatemala to the U.S. — only to be separated from her at the border, reunited and deported home. Sitting at an immigration facility in Guatemala City, he said they came for work. “I needed to try to make a better life for my family — I wanted them to have what I could not give them here,” he said. “There are many, many jobs in the States.”

But a lack of staff means the business can’t grow, he said. Rep. Dave Brat, R-Virginia., a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said he did not think the lower unemployment rate would weaken efforts to restrict illegal immigration. “The irony is it makes it more transparent what the real problem of the labor market is,” Brat said, citing about 10 million Americans not in the labor force. He called for improved education and imposing work requirements on food stamp recipients to get more of these Americans in the workforce. “The answer is not to bring in 10 million folks from abroad,” Brat said. The beauty of togetherness The long history of cultural, religious, political, artistic and trade relations between Indonesia and China date back over half a millennium and continue to have profound influences on both countries. Though mostly harmonious these relations have also been marked by some deeply troubling events and as a consequence some less than harmonious attitudes and actions have occurred over the years often eclipsing the generally positive interactions that in fact flourish in day-to-day relations. Bali has a particularly close relationship with Chinese culture that began long ago but is perhaps most notably described in the love story that took place in the 12th century between Balinese King Jaya Pangus of Kintamani and Chinese princess Kang Cing Wie of the Kang Dynasty that continues to resonate to this very day. There are various renditions of the story but in essence they fell madly in love and the cultural influences that the Chinese princess brought with her have become part of Balinese culture in general with particular influence in the area of Kintamani where this legendary couple lived. There were of course many Chinese merchants and cultural envoys visiting Bali and other parts of Indonesia before and after this story, however certain distinct influences like the use of pis bolong (chinese coins) and the barong landung (chinese style barong) and other influences from Chinese culture took root with this couple and have made their way all over the island and have become integrated into Balinese culture. On July 25th, 2018 Neka Museum in collaboration with artist community Segara Lor from Udiksnas University opened an exhibition entitled “Galungan Cina” in celebration of the harmonious relations between these two cultures. According to some accounts, what has become one of Bali’s most important religious holidays – Galungan and Kuningan was born out of the love story between King Jaya Pangus and princess Kang Cing Wie. As curator and cultural art historian I Made Susanta Dwitanaya explained: “the title of the exhibition was chosen as a way to show how Balinese culture is one that is based on inclusion rather than exclusion, whereby influences from other cultures – in this case Chinese culture, are not feared, rejected or vilified but rather considered as enriching and incorporated into the broader world view of Balinese culture itself”. Segara Lor invited guest artist Tien Hong to join them in this exhibition as a Balinese painter whose family descends from China. Hong is from Desa Lampu, Kintamani where the majority of residents are also of Chinese descent. His family and neighbors have been living in Bali for many generations and although they acknowledge their roots in China and maintain certain traditions, they also practice Balinese religious and cultural customs. “Yes I am of Chinese descent but I am also very much Balinese.

and Dewa Johana. All of the works in the exhibition refer in some way to the influence of Chinese culture in Bali, whether tangible or intangible and pay tribute the wealth that comes from such cultural interactions. The high quality and great diversity of the works themselves also echoes the distinct ability of Balinese culture in particular and Indonesian culture in general to allow for great diversity while preserving a fundamental identity. It is perhaps this ability to remain coherent while embracing difference that defines the unusually beautiful identity of this island and the nation of which it is part. “Neka Museum is dedicated to supporting local, national and international artists of note and we are especially pleased to welcome

Farmers turn prosperous if people use local products

DENPASAR - Who is wrong if farmers do not prosper? It can be the fault of farmers or the government, but the community also has a big contribution to the welfare of farmers. People becoming the users of agricultural products are expected to use as much local fruit as possible to meet their needs, so that local farmers can prosper. The owner of UD Sari Buah, Made Sianta, hoped there are rules requiring people to use local fruits. He considered the competition in agriculture does not come from outside Bali (Indonesia) but from overseas with the entry of imported fruits. This farmer from Padangan village, Pupuan, Tabanan, is also a salesperson of his colleagues coalesced into the farmer group. Based on experience, he considered it really difficult to market the products if the rules on local fruit use are tightened. He used to supply fruits to hotels and supermarkets. Of the two modern markets, the fees obtained can be greater than the sales to traditional markets. However, the payment system in hotels and supermarkets is rather difficult for farmers. Supermarkets usually pay farmers after two weeks while hotel takes longer, where the payment is settled after one month. This is one of the obstacles faced by farmers, namely capital. To be able to supply fruits and vegetables to hotels and supermarkets every day, he must have enough capital to support the production. Within two weeks to one month, there is no income obtained for the operational turnover of the business. In addition, during the harvest season, the fruit is abundant. Farmers will turn worried because the price of fruits can go down in harmony with the abundant supplies. Fruits will be valued cheaply and sometimes does not cover the operational costs of farmers.

Moreover, mangosteen harvest will start next three months. Abundant mangosteen is expected to get absorbed in the market. He really hoped the government can help smooth the mangosteen exports so that farmers do not waste their production. An economic observer, Viraguna Bagoes Oka, said that so far the agricultural development in Bali is only short-term, not longterm oriented. Thus, it cannot be enjoyed, and prosper farmers in the long run. In addition, it has difficulty in terms of human resources. Human resources in farming sector are gradually decreasing. This is the result of a human resource mindset oriented to an instant and factual profession, namely working in the bureaucracy and tourism. “Such orientation remains prominent. This mindset causes the agricultural sector to require patience, fighting power, determination to produce optimally and really that takes a long time to produce results,” he explained. Over the past ten years, the government has prioritized short-term aspects. Working patterns and results are seen in the short term. So, the sector requiring a long oriented foundation is less considered. For example, the infrastructure is very alarming. The traffic of goods from village to city or from city to city is very inefficient. Inevitably, the factor of production is burdened by transportation costs. Similarly, there is no agricultural management from the upstream to downstream. Necessarily it should be managed well and continuously. “Thus, what produced in the upstream is absorbed by the market. Since the infrastructure is not supportive, the production is partially taken from other places that are also costly. On that account, Bali is 70 percent dependent on outside Bali for eight basic commodities,” he explained. (kmb42)

DENPASAR - Wayang wong ballet is one of the Balinese traditional dances included in the genre of bebali or semi-sacred dance. In 2015, wayang wong together with eight other traditional dances was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO. After the recognition, the government has the duty to maintain and preserve the wayang wong. One of them is by keeping the dancer’s regeneration process so as not to get disconnected from time to time. “We’ve obliged the regeneration process so that the nine Balinese dances included in the three genres (including wayang wong—Ed) must always be presented in every parade of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). Then, we also perform wayang wong in the BAF and Bali Mandara Mahalango activities,” said the Head of the Bali Culture Office, Dewa Putu Beratha, when confirmed on Saturday (Aug. 4). According to Beratha, wayang wong is one of the arts almost coming into extinction in several places. Nevertheless, it remains well preserved and made sacred like the wayang wong of Tejakula (Buleleng) and the one at Pucak Kembar Temple, Tabanan. To preserve the wayang wong almost going extinct, the reconstruction process is the answer. “After reconstructing, we provide the opportunity for performances in cultural events such as BAF and Mahalango like the latest reconstruction in Kerobokan, Badung. Now, there is another in Kuta

and Bualu. The wayang wong of Bualu has already been performed twice. So, it is the government’s obligation to preserve and maintain because it has included in the world cultural heritage,” he explained. Beratha added that one of the requirements before the nine Balinese dances were tried by the UNESCO into an intangible cultural heritage, indeed there must be a statement. For instance, Bali in particular will make a number of policies to maintain and preserve the arts considering there are currently challenges in the form of the development of people’s life that have more or less influenced the conservation efforts. “It used to be an agrarian society and remained homogeneous, so there was still a lot of opportunity to do art activities. However, today the community has led to industrial services. Children are also busy going to school to a higher level,” he added. In the past, continued Beratha, wayang wong was called barong

ketingkling and there was ngelawang or gallivanting show every month. During Galungan, the gallivanting show could even be done for a full month. At that time, agrarian society believed that if wayang wong entered people’s homes when making gallivanting show and touched the trees in the house compound, the trees would bear dense fruits. “The gallivanting show tradition has no longer been seen today because there is a shift in livelihood. However, the ones made sacred remains to be well maintained at temples, and these are taken to government events,” he said. Beratha does not deny that there is a wayang wong truly sacred and may only be performed at certain temples. However, some may be allowed to be staged by using duplicates of the original masks of the wayang wong. CARACAS - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he was “more determined than ever” after he escaped an “assassination” attempt using an explosive-laden drone as he gave a speech during a Caracas military parade. The government said seven soldiers were wounded in the alleged attack Saturday, blamed on Colombia by Maduro and later claimed by a mysterious rebel group. “I am fine, I am alive, and after this attack I’m more determined than ever to follow the path of the revolution,” Maduro said defiantly of the incident, from which he escaped unharmed. “Justice! Maximum punishment! And there will be no forgiveness,” he warned in an address to the nation, sparking fears of an anti-

opposition offensive in a country already reportedly holding some 248 political prisoners. Meanwhile, Attorney General Tarek William Saab, also present at the parade, said those arrested in connection with the incident would be identified on Monday. “There will be a ruthless punishment,” he said. Venezuelan state television images showed Maduro looking up disconcertedly in the middle of a speech having heard a bang, before members of the country’s National Guard lined up in the parade suddenly scattered. “It was an attack to kill me, they tried to assassinate me today,” he said in a state broadcast, speaking of a “flying object (that) exploded in front of me.”

Communication Minister Jorge Rodriguez said there was “an explosive charge... detonated close to the presidential podium” and in several other spots along the parade held in central Caracas. Saab told CNN he saw a drone filming the event explode. No drones could be seen in the television broadcast, which showed bodyguards jumping in front of Maduro to protect him with flexible ballistic shields. The broadcast was quickly cut. Meanwhile, a policeman who requested anonymity told AFP that drones may have been released from a nearby apartment that suffered a fire after one exploded. Ubud Village Jazz Festival August 10-11th

The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is headed into its sixth year as it opens to the public on August 10-11. As in previous years, the highly acclaimed festival will host a roaster of great talents from Bali, Indonesia and abroad, with Arma Museum and Resort serving as the venue.

Every Bond story features a masterly villain with ambitions of world domination, but few are so iconic as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Most recently portrayed by Christoph Waltz in Spectre, Blofeld has appeared in seven other Bond films and is often seen stroking his white Persian cat in evil contemplation. One such appearance is in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, one of the more divisive Bond films thanks to its leading man, George Lazenby, who played the role of 007 just the once. Although the 1969 film received a lukewarm reception from critics, many consider it to be one of the best in the series, in part because of its spectacular scenery. The site of Blofeld’s secret lair, Piz Gloria, is atop the 2,970m summit of the Schilthorn in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps. This is one of the only places in the world where the public can experience a Bond film set up close and personal. The story of Piz Gloria While searching for the ideal film location for Blofeld’s lair, the production team came across a partly constructed sports bar with a revolving floor on the Schilthorn summit. Set against a backdrop of dramatic, snow-topped mountains, which includes the indomitable Eiger, it seemed the perfect setting for a villainous plot. The film’s producer agreed to finance its completion in exchange for exclusive filming rights. Since filming ended, the building has retained its Piz Gloria moniker, taking full advantage of the Bond connection. The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows and revolves a full 360 degrees in 55 minutes. The family friendly menu includes the fan favourite “007 burger” complete with a 007

stamped logo on the bun. As well as a restaurant, there is also a permanent exhibition containing Bond memorabilia and film clips on the lower floor. While this could seem a little corny, the “Bond World” exhibition is actually very well presented, with a great selection of iconic Bond posters, part of the helicopter used in the film and various interactive games and entertainment. Outdoor adventures As you exit the cable car at the top of the Schilthorn, you are immediately presented with some rather spectacular views of the mountains surrounding the region. This includes the Jungfrau, Eiger and Jura Mountains. On a clear day, you can also see Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. There is a large, open area covered with tables and chairs, where you can relax with a cocktail and enjoy the views. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can take part in the “thrill walk”, a 200m long steel and glass walkway that hugs the rock and leads to the cable car station. Not one for vertigo sufferers, the walkway is both narrow and high, but you are rewarded with uninterrupted views of the valley of Lauterbrunnen. You can also channel your inner Bond and attempt to crawl though an (optional) eight-metre tunnel with clear views of the 250m drop below. If you haven’t had enough of 007 by now, there is a new exhibition outside called the “007 Walk of Fame”: a series of statues featuring handprints of the film’s cast and crew and information about their time on set. The opening event in 2015 was attended by George Lazenby himself. (net)

Despite having a wide range of sponsors supporting this tribute to jazz in Ubud, due the large costs involved in the production, staging and the considerable cost of having renowned foreign musicians play at the festival, receiving the contribution of finding from BEKRAF has allowed the Ubud Village Jazz Festival to increase the overall quality of the experience of those who attend. “While Arma is already an extremely pleasant venue with distinct touches of Balinese aesthetics and lots of greenery, it is always a challenge to create a new atmosphere from year to year. In fact each year it is harder because we want it to be different that it has ever been before, integrate video mapping that is minimalist enough to not distract from attention to the music, while still maintaining the general them of “Balinese village”, with all natural materials, like palm leaf and bamboo”, explained architect and designer Diana Surya who added that co-desiger Putu “Klick” Swantara had pulled out all the stops in this year’s design with Luden House’s Gede Sayur Suanda adding a special touch. This year’s edition features the theme “freedom of expression”, referring to the roots of jazz as a musical genre. As festival co-organizer, artistic director and jazz addict Yuri Mahatma explained during a recent press conference at Rumah Sanur: “jazz is a particular genre of music that is indeed rooted in freedom of expression, this does not however mean that any from of musical sounds played freely constiutes jazz – such an understanding would imply a great disrespect for the countless hours that jazz musicians spend honing their skills. Here “freedom of expression” refers to the vast range of possibilities of this freedom-based genre”. Rumah Sanur also hosts a weekly Jazz event entitled ‘Jazz Under the Tree”, which has gained increasing popularity since it began a couple of years ago. And although there are a few other venues in Bali that hold regular jazz events, as festival founder and co-organiser and Chairman A. A Anom Wirajaya Darsana of Antida Productions explained: “one of the main inspirations for the Ubud Village Jazz Festival is to provide the Balinese public with exposure to great Jazz talents from here an abroad. Bali has some exceptionally talented Jazz musicians too but they are rarely given the stage. So although it is great that this festival provides a boost to tourism in Bali, and allows Bali’s music scene to become known to other parts of the world, what gives me the most joy personally is knowing that all this great talent can be even more enriched by the exchange that takes place during the UVJF. It is truly a labor of love for everyone involved in the production”. The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is also offering two day of pre-event workshops taught by both local international musicians appearing in the festival. The workshop will be held on August 8th-9th and will be taking place in Denpasar, Karangasem, Canggu, Kuta, Jumbaran, Sanur and Pengosekan. As local jazz luminary Jeko Fauzy said, “I am really excited about some of the musicians who will be playing this year. I definitely plan to attend the workshop that Benny Green will be giving as part of the UVJV pre-events. Even though I give my heart and soul to my craft anyway, having such amazing musicians play here really inspires me to step up my game”. “I am of course a big fan of jazz music in general and love singing jazz classics, but what I really love about the Ubud Village Jazz Festival is that it reminds us all that jazz is fun”, replied Bali-based, Malang born up and coming jazz vocalist Qee-Qee who performed a few soul soothing songs during the press conference. The Ubud Village Jazz Festival is the larger festival in South-East Asia that is dedicated entirely to the musical genre of Jazz and in the short time since it was born, it has already proven to be must for Jazz lovers from around the world and has more firmly anchored Ubud as a culturally rich tourist destination.(kmb)

Sacred Wayang wong of Tejakula

Well known in Asia and Europe, survives in magical way

TEJAKULA village, Tejakula, Buleleng, is the birthplace of the wayang wong (human puppet—Ed) art in Bali. Over the years, this art born out of the combination of Parwa and Gambuh arts, has experiences its ups and downs. Fortunately Wayang Wong has managed to be sustained and has even become known in parts of South East Asia and Europe which many attribute to the strength of this heritage that carries a magical aura. This art is estimated to have been born in the mid-17th century through a sacred birth process. Through trance experiences by supporting devotees and confidants of the deities abiding in the Tejakula clan temple, the deities requested that wayang wong be performed in a number of other temples in the territory of Tejakula customary village. After getting a magical signal, artists in Tejakula customary village gathered and agreed to establish the wayang wong art. Art figure I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik, a traditional artist, came to Tejakula in the 16th century, while I Dewa Batan, another artist, came to Tejakula in the 15th century.

These two artists are believed to have played important roles in the birth of the wayang wong art in Tejakula. Both artists also made wooden masks representing figures from the Ramayana epics. There were 175 masks made at that time. Until now, the clan temple regularly holds their temple festival (piodalan) with the accompaniment of a wayang wong performance inherited from generation to generation. This sacredness has allowed the wayang wong of Tejakula to be named as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. One of the artists who witnessed the creation of the way-

ang wong of Tejakula is Gede Putu Tirta Ngis, a 72 year old resident of Tegal Semaga hamlet, Tejakula. When met recently, the man who is familiarly called Putu Ngis has deeply involved in the sacred arts since 1975 and until now he is still actively plays the wayang wong. He is also known to be an expert in playing all the characters of this art. In fact Putu Ngis did not know his relatives that had danced wayang wong but he is fact a descendant of I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik who is known to be one of the artists who helped create the wayang wong art. “During the period of 1975 to

1985, I learned to play wayang wong. The process of learning involved dancing, performing and watching other perform. Eventually I was able to play all wayang wong figures”, he said. According to Jelantik, the wayang wong of Tejakula is indeed a very old cultural heritage with hundreds of masks representing several groups of characters and include masks of Sugriwa, Rama, Laksamana, Wibisana, servant, Rahwana, Kumbakarna and giants. Hundreds of masks are now neatly stored at the clan (Maksan) temple of Tejakula. The masks that are estimated to have be 3 and half centuries old are still well preserved and are only used on special occasions like the Tejakula customary village, by the members of the wayang wong troupe of Tejakula that consists of 300 people. This sacred art can only be

staged at particular times and places such as large ceremonies like at ngenteg linggih and piodalan at Danka Temple. Before the masks are used, special rituals like bakti pamungkah are are performed at Maksan Temple. This sacred wayang wong dance must be played it’s full form and cannot be broken up into parts. “During the piodalan at the Desa Temple of Tejakula, the first part of the Ramayana epic is played then followed by the second part and so on. Once completed the story starts again”, he explained. Through the generations Since its creation, the wayang wong has remained sacred over the generations. Sometimes without having learned the dance, if someone has been psychically appointed, they are automatically able to dance like the other dancers who have been practicing. Gede Komang, another wayang wong artist who is known as a senior figure of this art form explained that some dancers inherit their talent form bloodlines other than those that have wayang wong dancers. Komang himself had never danced the wayang wong, but one day in the 1990’s he dreamt of the dance even though he had rarely ever seen it performed since he worked in East Timor. But since it time to dance, he danced. It is believed that if someone has been chosen to dance the wayang wong dance and refuses, bad things will happen to them. He cited the example of a family member who had been suffering paralysis and could not be cured. After consulting a medium, the family member was told to join a wayang wong troupe. After requesting holy water from Maksan Temple, they completed recovered. It is a commonly held belief that one must not reject the invitation to become a wayang wong dancer. “We have confidence that when it’s time, I will join to dance. If I try to reject this we believe something bad will happen- possibly continuous nitemares or chronic illness. This is a believe and indeed it happens to us”, he explained. (mud)

Russia makes Steven Seagal special envoy to US to help thaw relations

MOSCOW - Russia has handed Hollywood movie star Steven Seagal the task of keeping relations cordial with the United States. The Russian foreign minister announced on Facebook that the actor will be its special envoy for humanitarian ties with the US. It said Seagal would “facilitate relations between Russia and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges”. The post is unpaid. The Hard To Kill action star is an accomplished martial artist, just like Russian president Vladimir Putin. American Seagal, whose grandparents were Russian Jews, was granted Russian citizenship in 2016. He has repeatedly defended Mr Putin’s policies, including the annexation of Crimea. And he has criticised the US government. Last year, Russian enemy Ukraine banned Seagal from entering the country for five years, citing national security reasons. (net)

JJ Abrams apologises to Evangeline Lilly over semi-naked Lost scene

LOS ANGELES - JJ Abrams has apologised to Evangeline Lilly after she complained about being “cornered” into a partially nude scene on Lost. Lilly, 38, played the character Kate Austen in the TV show from 2004 to 2010 - but told a podcast last week of her difficulties with the producers. Two of the show’s creators, Abrams and Damon Lindelof, have indirectly apologised to her, although they said they’re not sure if their message has got through. “Our response to Evie’s comments this morning in the media was to immediately reach out to her to profoundly apologise for

the experience she detailed while working on Lost,” they said in a statement. “We have not yet connected with her, but remain deeply and sincerely sorry. No person should ever feel unsafe at work. Period.” Speaking on a podcast, Lilly said: “In season three, I’d had a bad experience on set with being basically cornered into doing a scene partially naked, and I felt had no choice in the matter. “And I was mortified and I was

trembling and when it finished, I was crying my eyes out and I had to go on do a very formidable, very strong scene thereafter. “In season four, another scene came up where Kate was undressing and I fought very hard to have that scene be under my control and I failed to control it again. “And so I then said, ‘That’s it, no more. You can write whatever you want - I won’t do it. I will never take my clothes off on this show again’. And I didn’t.” (net)
