A Canadian helicopter, meanwhile, went down in southern Afghanistan. No one was injured and the Taliban claimed it shot the aircraft down. The suicide bombing occurred in the morning in Kunduz province’s Imam Sahib district, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. In addition to the deaths, six police and five civilians were wounded, it said. No NATO troops were killed in the bombing, said Maj. Michael Johnson, a NATO forces spokesman. He said some NATO forces were wounded, but declined to say how many or how seriously. The vehicles were stopped in preparation for an operation in the area and the killed police officers had been standing outside of their trucks as

they mobilized, said Abdul Rahman Aqtash, deputy police chief of Kunduz province. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message to The Associated Press. The insurgent group regularly launches attacks against military forces or government workers as part of their campaign against the government. Kunduz and other northern provinces have become increasingly violent in recent months as insurgent activity has spread into areas beyond the militants’ longtime bases in the south and east of the country. This expansion of militant attacks has happened as the U.S. and its allies are rushing thousands of reinforcements to try to turn back the Taliban. The focus of U.S. and NATO operations has been in the ethnic Pashtun south. Heavy rain flushing continuously resulted in the chili crop of farmers at the Subak Sangkar, Jembrana, damaged. Farmers claimed to suffer great losses due to crop failure on account of natural factors. Observation made last Wednesday (Aug 4) showed that almost every chili planted at the plot of the land owned by local farmers died. Even, if there were some plants already bearing fruits, they were in poor condition and unfit for harvesting. One of the chili farmers, Ketut Suparsa, said that almost all of his plants died due to high rainfall rates. More than 70 ares of his land were planted with chilies and actually they already started to harvest, but they had been dead. “I suffer from great losses. I had spent much cost for the harvest. But, high rainfall has caused lots of plants dead,” he said. Such expenses were used to cultivate the soil and seeds reaching hundreds of thousands of rupiahs. The costs have not included in fertilizer and maintenance. Some of the plants were still alive but his party worried if they would die as the rain still continued to occur. “I

truly depend my life on the income from the living plants only. Since it rains every day it forces me to spend more money on the cost of making the trenches and ditches,” he said. During the rain as these days, trenches were required to maintain the plants in order the water would not stagnate. Similar complaint was also revealed by another chili farmer, Pan Tentra. According to him, many of his chili plants had been dead. Within such condition, his production would decline and the income will consequently go down as well. In reality, chili currently had a good price and

highly demanded. “It is rainfall causing this disaster and therefore our earnings decline,” he complained. Meanwhile, he added that during normal condition, local farmers could yield chili at the average of one quintal. But with conditions under the rains, they estimated to get only 25 kilograms of chili harvest. (sur)

Governor bans traditional market to sell import products Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika appealed the traditional markets not to sell cheap branded goods imported from foreign countries. Management of traditional markets should really accommodate the local potentials by selling products existing around the market. “If possible, the markets should not sell cheaper branded goods imported from overseas. We recommend the village markets to sell the native products of the local area,” said the Governor in Sanur, last Wednesday (Aug 4). According to governor by selling their own products, traditional markets would have distinctiveness. This matter was in line with the expectation of Bali in order to have capability of producing quality organic food products. “If buyers would like to find import products they can easily find them in the existing department stores. However, if they wish to find genuine local products both for the locals and foreign buyers

must go to traditional markets,” he said. Although it was a bit more expensive compared to the results of inorganic food, according to Governor, such an effort was said to be very appropriate to be realized so that Bali would be increasingly recognized among the foreign tourists. “Many things can be performed to support the traditional markets in order they could remain to survive and exist in the future,” he said. Through the Simantri program, Bali was targeted to become a farm-based tourist destination. “As a tourism destination, we also hope that foreign tourists coming to Bali are from middle to upper class,” he observed. Based on the data of Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), nationally the number of traditional market currently had reached 13,450 with a total merchant of about 12.625,000. However, the annual growth tended to decrease through the years. This condition was inversely related to the modern marketplace which increased both in terms of the number of outlets and turnover. Arrange Village Spatial Planning Munduk Don’t Accept Unforeseen Investors Public figures and residents of Munduk Village, Banjar Subdistrict is very aware of their village being chased by investors. Of course, with it being next to Tamblingan Lake and surrounded by forests also cooling gardens is a complete paradise, many investors wanted to build tourist accommodations yet it destroys culture, environment and the people’s mental so they were was all rejected. So, how did the chilly village selected its investors? Residents of Munduk are known as people who guard its surroundings and even though it’s a touristic place, they don’t accept investors just like that. He’s like the only black guy that works here.” Family and friends say Omar Thornton was only too painfully aware of that distinction, as he claimed he was subjected to racial discrimination while working as a union driver at Hartford Distributors in Manchester. Authorities say they still do not know what made Thornton snap — to pack two .9 mm pistols in his lunch box and a shotgun in his car before he headed to work Tuesday for a meeting with his union representative and supervisors to discuss his continued employment in what his girlfriend said was once his dream job. I asked him what was wrong a bunch of times and he said nothing was wrong with him. ... That’s why he gave me a long hug and kiss before he left.” Hannah said Thornton, 34, had complained of racial harassment to her months ago and had shared with her evidence of it: photos of racist graffiti and a surreptitiously monitored conversation allegedly involving company managers. Union and company officials say Thornton never complained of harassment and there have never been reports of racial discrimination at the company. A union official described Thornton as a dissatisfied worker whose first targets were the three people in his disciplinary meeting: Steve Hollander, 50, a member of the family that owns the company, who was shot twice but survived; Bryan Cirigliano, 51, president of Teamsters 1035 and Thornton’s representative at the hearing; and Louis Felder, 50, who news reports described as the company’s operations director.

ZAMBOANGA – One person was killed and at least 12 others were injured when a bomb exploded at an airport in the restive southern Philippines on Thursday, authorities said. An improvised explosive device (IED) caused the blast near the arrivals area of Zamboanga airport, regional police commander Chief Superintendent Edwin Corvera said. The mayor of Zamboanga, Celso Lobregat, put the toll at one dead and at least 12 injured, one of them seriously. “Initial investigation suggests the one who carried the bomb was killed in the explosion,” he said in a ABS-CBN television interview. “We do not want to speculate at this time who the bombers are.” Lobregat said the blast occurred just after a plane

Zamboanga is one of the main cities on Mindanao island, where a Muslim separatist insurgency has left more than 150,000 people dead since 1978. In one of their highest-profile kidnappings, the group seized three American and 17 local tourists from a beach resort on Palawan island southwest of Manila in 2001. They beheaded one of the Americans, and another was killed during a rescue attempt a year after the kidnapping. The third American was freed in the rescue effort. The US military has had about 500 soldiers stationed in Mindanao since early 2002 to train local troops in how to combat the Abu Sayyaf. However the US soldiers are not allowed to have a combat role.

The shelter is home to more than 1,800 animals, mainly dogs, but also bears, monkeys, foxes and tortoises. “With the speed of fire, we don’t know if we can save them all,” Sergei Serdyuk said of the animals. Nearby fire stations did not answer calls when Tuesday’s blaze advanced — one official hung up as soon as he heard the word fire, said Serdyuk, who added he has spent the last days dousing trees with water

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s civil aviation chief said he lied to international media about a plane crash at Harare’s airport Thursday so that emergency response teams would believe the accident was real. “Media was not told to avoid leaks as this drill involved a bomb disposal unit, anti-hijack units and a plane crash,” the Civil Aviation Authority’s chief executive David Chawota told reporters. A prosecutor on Wednesday won the right to photograph 31year-old Niagara Falls residents Edward and Raymond Nickens with their shirts on and off to see which one might match a witness’ description in the May shooting.

The brothers wore matching clothes and goatees in court. But tattoos visible on their arms were different. Edward Nickens’ attorney argued photos should be taken after charges are filed. Raymond Nickens’ attorney said police have already taken pictures. But the judge allowed the photo session after the Niagara County prosecutor said the brothers could change their appearances to look even more alike.

Therefore, I hope we can organize Sail Morotai in North Maluku,” President Yudhoyono said. Similarly, devotees thank for the prosperity bestowed and maintain the relationship with their ancestors. Though they have left for the beyond, hopefully they could illuminate their descendants. Another version about Galungan is mentioned by the manuscript Jaya Kasunu. It is said that the king Jaya Kasunu (AD 1204), meditated (held dewa sraya) to invoke guidance. His problem was that not one of his predecessors could rule longer. Through his solemn meditation he was inspired that he should re-organize religious activities, such as Galungan. No matter what the version is, the essence of these mythologies implies that a devotee or creation should maintain their persistent contact to his Creator. The âtman dwelling within the human self should maintain his contact to Brahman, the

Creator. By doing so, humans can continuously obtain the illumination to walk in the path of dharma. As manifestation of gratitude, devotees express it through worship at temples, garden, rice field and so forth. Everything that has given prosperity is also offered an oblation, including the means of transportation. If you happen to take an excursion on that day you of course will rub up against many cars affixed with young coconut paraphernalia. Hopefully, the festivity does not come to an end at the vibrant fiesta marked with grandiose oblation, assorted delicious food or luxurious paraphernalia. All the times it should help the spiritual development. Anything achieved in this life either tangible or intangible entities, should not make us arrogant. Sometimes, when having abundance of wealth or higher educational background, a human feels superior or more powerful than others. Even, it is not employed as a milestone to improve his devotion to God. It’s here where the achievement drags human to sluggish condition or gorge of destruction. Balinese Culture Wajik (Rice Flour Cake with Palm Sugar) Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked. Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated. Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve. Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. Ingredients: 600 gr skinned boneless snapper fillet 1 cup freshly grated coconut or 1½ cups moistened desiccated coconut ½ cup seafood spice paste 5 fragrant lime leaves, chopped 1 tsp black peppercorns, finely crushed 1 tsp salt 3-5 bird’s eye chilies, very finely chopped 2 tbsp palm sugar Lemon grass or satay skewers Preparation: 1. Mince fish fillet very finely in a food processor or with a chopper. 2. Add all other ingredients & mix well. 3. Mould a heaped tablespoon full of this mixture around a wooden skewer or over trimmed stalks of lemon grass and grill over charcoal until golden brown.

ATHENS – Greece still faces “key challenges” in fighting its public finance crisis, despite making “considerable progress” across a wide front, EU and IMF auditors said here on Thursday. European Commission representative Servaas Deroose said after an audit mission by the EU and IMF: “Despite considerable progress in a vast array of areas, key challenges remain.” Speaking at a joint press conference in Athens, the mission’s director Poul Thomsen said that “progress is off to a very strong start but there are pressure points, risk areas”. These include the opening up of the energy sector and the cleaning up of debt-ridden state railway company, OSE. “We have discussed various options on the table (for national electricity company DEI) and for OSE, there is a deficit of one billion euros (1.31 billion dollars) every year and a debt of 10 billon euros that needs to be addressed,” Deroose said. The quarterly review by the mission from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund is the first since the Socialist government committed itself to a tough austerity regime in May in order to access the 110-billion-euro loan and avert a looming debt default. The review is designed to pave the way for a second loan payment of 9.0 billion euros at the beginning of September, following an initial

20 billion euro loan in May. A further 9.0 billion payment is scheduled for December. “I’m confident that (our chiefs in Frankfurt, Brussels and Washington) will be as impressed with the progress so far as we have been,” said Thomsen. “I’m confident they will see the risks also, but they will also see that progresses are in place to handle these risks. So I am definitely confident that we are going forward. According to the troika, the contraction of the economy, with GDP expected to decline 4.0 percent in 2010, and by 2.5 percent in 2011, is in line with projections made in May. However, the mission said inflation is “higher than expected”. It said: “We have revised our estimate for 2010 to 4.75 percent — pushed up by indirect tax increases. With no signs of secondround effects, inflation is expected to decline rapidly”. The Greek government had initially forecast average inflation for 2010 at 1.90 percent as part of its austerity program.

As usual the BoE made no comment on the economy in its terse policy statement, which also confirmed that the central bank was making no change to its 200 billion pounds ($317 billion) of quantitative easing asset purchases. More clarity on the decision will come next Wednesday, when the central bank publishes a quarterly update to its growth and inflation forecasts, which the nine-member Monetary Policy Committee had access to when reaching today’s decision. “It was very much as expected. The focus is going to be on the Inflation Report next week where markets will be looking to assess if there has been any change in the tone on the outlook for policy,” said UBS economist

Abu Dhabi to hike oil output capacity 29.6%: report Agence France Presse ABU DHABI – Oil-rich Abu Dhabi is planning to raise its oil production capacity by 29.6 percent to 3.5 million barrels per day by 2018 from 2.7 million bpd today, according to a report published on Thursday. “Abu Dhabi has set ambitious targets to increase total production capacity from the current 2.7 million barrels

of oil per day to 3.5 million bpd by 2018,” said The Oil and Gas Year, Abu Dhabi 2010. The report put Abu Dhabi’s proven oil reserves at 98.2 billion barrels, and 95 percent of the reserves of the United Arab Emirates, which are ranked seventh largest in the world. The UAE’s production quota imposed by the OPEC cartel stands currently at 2.2 million bpd.

The report also said that the leading emirate in the UAE federation sits on 5.8 trillion cubic metres (204.8 trillion cubic feet) of proven natural gas reserves. It represented 93 percent of the UAE’s reserves of 6.43 tcm (227.1 tcf) — the world’s sixth-largest, it added. Abu Dhabi has invested 30 billion dollars in oil and gas projects between March 2009 and March 2010, the report said, pointing out that operators

and service providers have been able to “make the best” of the global economic downturn by purchasing materials, equipment and manpower at lower cost. LEIDSCHENDAM, Netherlands – Naomi Campbell testified before the war crimes tribunal Thursday, confirming that she had received some “dirty-looking stones” after a dinner with former Liberian ruler Charles Taylor but stopping short of saying they were diamonds or that she was given the gift by Taylor himself. Campbell was being questioned in Taylor’s war crimes trial about claims made by actress Mia Farrow that Taylor gave the model an uncut diamond or diamonds after a dinner party hosted by Nelson Mandela that they all attended in South Africa in 1997. Prosecutors say, if true, the story would provide evidence that Taylor traded guns to neighboring Sierra Leone rebels in exchange for uncut diamonds — sometimes known as “blood diamonds” during that country’s 1992-2002 civil war. CLEVELAND – Dread of the unknown hung in the air as Lynn France typed two words into the search box on Facebook: the name of the woman with whom she believed her husband was having an affair. Click. And there it was, the stuff of nightmares for any spouse, cuckolded or not. Wedding photos. At Walt Disney World, no less, featuring her husband literally dressed as Prince Charming. His new wife, a pretty blonde, was a glowing Sleeping Beauty, surrounded by footmen. “I was numb with shock, to tell you the truth,” says France, an occupational therapist from Westlake, a Cleveland suburb. “There was like an album of 200 pictures on there. Their whole wedding.” Affairs were once shadowy matters, illicit encounters whispered about and often difficult to prove. But in the age of Facebook and Twitter and lightning-fast communication, the notion of privacy is fast becoming obsolete. From flirtatious text messages to incriminating emails, marital indiscretions are much easier to track — especially

if potentially damaging photographic evidence is posted online. “All of these things are just a trail of cyber breadcrumbs that are easily tracked by good divorce lawyers,” says Parry Aftab, an expert on Internet safety and privacy laws. France, 41, was not completely blindsided by her Facebook discovery, which happened in January 2009. That fall, she had grown suspicious when her husband began taking frequent business trips, even leaving the day the couple’s newborn son came home from the hospital. Once, she found his passport at home when he was supposed to be in China for business. In October, before leaving for another trip, her husband left a hotel website up on the couple’s computer screen. “So I actually went there with a girlfriend, just to see for myself for sure,” France says. “He was there with this

girlfriend. I said, `Hey, I’m his wife. We’ve got a baby.’” The woman told France that she was engaged to France’s husband. “Sure enough, they were registered for a wedding at Target,” France says. A girlfriend recommended checking the woman’s Facebook page, which was then open to the public, France says, but has since become private. There, France found evidence of an unfolding relationship that she still couldn’t wrap her head around. Overwhelmed with two young children, she confronted her husband. She says he told her he wouldn’t actually go through with the wedding. It wasn’t until she saw the wedding photos that she finally began divorce proceedings. “People who engage in these sorts of behaviors now have the option of trying to keep things private or turning it into a spectacle and becoming their own reality show,” says lawyer Andrew Zashin, a child custody expert who is representing Lynn France. “In this case, it seems, the spouse may have crossed the line and gotten married while he was still married.”

Pregnant moms who overeat could make obese babies Associated Press Writer

LONDON – Women who gain too much weight during pregnancy have big babies, putting their children at risk of becoming heavy later on, a new study says. American researchers followed all births in Michigan and New Jersey between 1989 and 2003. They then focused on women who had more than one child, to exclude the possibility that women who were genetically predisposed to be obese were simply passing those genes onto their babies. Among the more than 513,000 women and their 1.1 million infants studied, scientists found that women who gained more than 53 pounds (24 kilograms) during their pregnancy made babies who were about 150 grams (0.3 pounds) heavier at birth than infants of women who gained only 22 pounds (10 kilograms). The study was published online Thursday in the medical journal Lancet and was paid for by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. “It’s never too early to start preventing obesity,” said Stephan Rossner, a professor in the obesity unit at Karolinska Hospital in Sweden who was not connected to the

study. “It may be uncomfortable for mothers to eat less and change their lifestyle, but after nine months they will get a great payoff for their children.” In the U.S., more than a third of women of normal weight and more than half of overweight and obese women gain more weight than their doctors recommend. The Institute of Medicine, an independent, nonprofit organization that advises the U.S. government, says normal-weight women should gain 25 to 35 pounds (11 to 16 kilograms) during pregnancy, while overweight and obese women should gain 11 to 25 pounds (5 to 11 kilograms). Heavier babies have a significantly higher risk of staying heavy throughout their lives, said Dr. David Ludwig, director of the Optimal Weight for Life program at Children’s Hospital in Boston, one of the study authors. Big babies also have higher chances of developing problems later in life including asthma, allergies and even cancer. Ludwig and his co-author found most women tend to put on similar amounts of weight for each pregnancy, though they are often heavier when they become pregnant with subsequent children.

MIAMI – The forecast for the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season calls for nine more hurricanes by November, including five major ones with winds topping 178 kilometers (110 miles) per hour, a Colorado State University study said Wednesday. The predictions for a “much more active than average” June-November hurricane season includes 18 named tropical storms, three of which — Alex, Bonnie and Colin — have already hit the region between June and August. Blanc’s Bleus squad shorn of World Cup rebels PARIS - France coach Laurent Blanc has kept a promise to leave 23 World Cup upstarts at home as he recalled Karim Benzema, Samir Nasri and Philippe Mexes to a 22-man squad in time for a friendly against Norway. Blanc took over from Raymond Domenech after France’s controversial World Cup campaign, which ended in a premature first round exit following the players’ controversial decision to strike. All 23 players faced sporting sanctions for their actions and former Bordeaux coach Blanc has, as expected, left the entire squad at home. Benzema, Nasri and Mexes were left out of Domenech’s squad for the illfated trip to South Africa in June, but return to headline a squad brimming with fresh faces and relatively unknown names on the international stage. Lassana Diarra of Real Madrid was a regular under Domenech but was ruled out of the World Cup at the last minute with illness. Diarra makes his return to midfield alongside the likes of Arsenal’s Nasri and Charles Nzogbia, who plays for Wigan. Marseille striker Hatem Ben Arfa, who narrowly missed out on selection for the World Cup, also returns alongside Real Madrid’s Benzema. Other than the return of Benzema, Nasri and Roma defender Mexes, the squad contains 13 players who could make their France debut. Seven of that 13 have never before been called

up. The seven entirely new France faces are defenders Mathieu Debuchy, Mamadou Sakho, and Benoit Tremoulinas, midfielders Yohan Cabaye, Blaise Matuidi, and Nzogbia and striker Jeremy Menez. France came under fire during and after the World Cup after the players agreed, en masse, to strike during a training session to protest Domenech’s decision to send Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka home. Anelka had launched a foulmouthed volley at the coach, and had the misfortune of seeing his words splashed across the front pages of France’s leading sports daily L’Equipe the next day. France play Norway in a friendly away on Wednesday August 11, after which Blanc will be expected to gradually reinstall at least some of the squad whose disastrous World Cup campaign caused huge uproar in France. Blanc’s first real challenge as coach will be to steer France successfully through qualifying for the 2012 European Championships. The first match is against Belarus on September 3.

Leipheimer probably doped at 2005 Tour, says ex-boss Agence France Presse

PARIS - A former team manager of cycling star Levi Leipheimer has claimed the American narrowly escaped a positive test for blood doping during the 2005 Tour de France. Leipheimer, who currently races with the RadioShack team led by seventime yellow jersey champion Lance Armstrong, has been accused by his former team manager at Gerolsteiner, Hans-Michael Holczer. Holczer said during a presentation of his book “Garantiert Positiv” (“Guaranteed Positive”) that Leipheimer’s blood values during the 2005 Tour “showed a very high probability of manipulation”. The German said the blood readings were so abnormal that he was advised by International Cycling Union (UCI) to take the American off the race. “It was clear to me: Leipheimer had ma-

nipulated,” Holczer said Wednesday. Holczer claimed that the UCI told him durung the race’s first rest day that Leipheimer’s blood readings had an off-score co-efficient of 132.8, only 0.2 under the limit of 133. A normal score is 85-95, and anything over 133 suggets that doping has taken place. The sport’s world ruling body allegedly advised Holczer to try and find a reason to remove Leipheimer from the race. However the German admitted he did not know how to react, given the fact that one team member, Danilo Hondo, had tested positive earlier that year and that Gerolsteiner would pull the plug in the event of a second positive. “I was caught between a moral obligation and a legal threat,” Holczer said, admitting he felt under huge pressure after Hondo’s positive test. “Ever since then we were sitting on an eco-

nomic landmine. I was facing total bankruptcy.” Leipheimer went on to finish sixth overall in the 2005 Tour de France, 11:21 behind winner Armstrong. A few weeks later he won the Tour of Germany, notably beating former Tour winner Jan Ullrich. The Californian finished 13th overall in the 2010 Tour de France. In September 2007 Gerolsteiner, a German mineral water company, announced it would end its sponsorship of the team at the end of 2008. It was shortly after the 2008 Tour de France that they suffered their worst doping scandal, when it emerged that both Bernhard Kohl and Stefan Schumacher had tested positive for the new blood-boosting drug CERA EPO (erythropoietin). Shortly after the Beijing Olympics in August, Schumacher and Italian Davide Rebellin also tested positive for CERA.

Having controversially handed German Grand Prix glory to teammate Fernando Alonso on a plate – an indiscretion that re-opened the ageold debate about team orders in the sport and earned the Scuderia a £100,000 fine and possibly worse in front of the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in Paris early next month [see separate story – click here] – Massa added to his Hockenheim runner-up spoils last weekend with a solid fourth place in Hungary, meaning he has tallied more points in the last two races than he had managed in the preceding seven. That has lifted the Brazilian to sixth spot in the drivers’ standings, only one position behind Alonso albeit widely deemed to be out of the title fight at 44 points adrift of the Spaniard. Nonetheless, having since returned to his homeland after what he described as ‘one of the busiest months I can remember in my time in F1’, Massa confessed that he is encouraged that Ferrari is seemingly ‘returning to the form that we expect’. “I think the Hungarian race result was about the best we could have hoped for, for several reasons – the pace of the Red Bulls, the fact that the track is well-known for not providing any overtaking opportu-

nities and finally the fact that I had a bit of bad luck in losing a place to Lewis [Hamilton] at the pit-stop, when the safety car came out,” the 29-year-old mused. “The luck swung back my way later on, though, when Lewis had an issue with his car and had to retire, which put me back to what you could call the ‘normal’ position of fourth, which is where I had started from on the grid. “At the time, we opted for a double pit-stop, with me coming in after Fernando, so why did we do this, instead of doing what the winner Mark Webber did and just keeping going on the soft tyres for longer? What Webber did was right, but only because of the pace he had in his car which allowed him to build up enough of a lead to pit without losing first place. This was the only reason, and it would not have worked for us. “Our double pit-stop worked perfectly, because when I arrived in the garage, Fernando had already left and I only lost the place to Lewis because that can sometimes happen in the pits. Even with the double pitstop, I had the chance to fight for my position. To be honest, it was the right strategic decision. “In Germany, we seemed to have the fastest car and just a few days later,

In Germany we and they qualified in much the same time and then we were quicker in the race, but in Hungary they were 1.2 seconds faster, which suggests to me that in Hockenheim they underperformed.” If Massa’s contention is accurate, Ferrari and McLarenMercedes have much work to do in order to play catch-up over the remaining seven grands prix of the campaign – but even if he was deprived of a rightful victory in Germany, in Hungary the Paulista arguably scored an altogether greater triumph by betraying no ill-effects whatsoever twelve months on from the accident there that some had feared would leave him unable to ever race again. “Budapest was an important weekend for me on a personal level,” the eleven-time grand prixwinner reflected. “Going back there after what happened a year ago and meeting the people in the circuit medical centre, who did such a fantastic job of getting me out of the car, in the ambulance and then into the helicopter was a great feeling. “On Thursday I had dinner with the surgeon who operated on me and did an excellent job, and all of this was something really special in my life.

Briatore tips Webber for title FLAVIO Briatore believes Mark Webber will win this year’s world championship, following his victory in Hungary on Sunday.
