Cosby’s sex assault trial to begin after years of U.S. allegations PENNSYLVANIA - Comedian Bill Cosby goes on trial for sexual assault on Monday in Pennsylvania, the culmination of years of allegations that have torpedoed his show business career. Cosby, 79, once a beloved entertainer known for his familyfriendly brand of comedy, is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in 2004. Constand, a former basketball player at Cosby’s alma mater Temple University and more than three decades his junior, will appear as the prosecution’s key witness during the trial, which is expected to last two weeks. Her accusation is the only one to result in criminal charges out of dozens of similar allegations from women stretching back decades. Cosby has denied ever assaulting anyone, saying the encounters with Constand and others were consensual. The trial will take place in the Philadelphia suburb of Norristown, though the jurors have been brought from Pittsburgh at the request of defense lawyers. It was Constand’s own civil lawsuit, filed in 2005 weeks after the Montgomery County district attorney’s office declined to bring charges, that eventually led the same office to prosecute Cosby in 2015. In what was then a sealed deposition, Cosby acknowledged he had obtained Quaaludes, a sedative, in order to give them to young women with whom he wanted to have sex. A federal judge released parts of the deposition in 2015, prompting prosecutors to reopen the case. Constand has told investigators that she viewed Cosby as a mentor and that he plied her with wine and unidentified pills, leaving her unable to resist his sexual advances. Defense lawyers will aim to undermine Constand’s credibility, questioning why she failed to report the crime for a year and then could not recall certain details like the month in which it occurred. Prosecutors will also call a second accuser, whose name is not yet public, to bolster Constand’s testimony. The woman, known as Kacey, says Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1996. (rtr)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran says rising tensions among its Arab Gulf neighbors threaten the interests of everyone in the region and has called for “political and peaceful methods” to resolve the crisis. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Egypt, severed diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing the gas-rich nation of supporting regional terrorist groups. ‘Wonder Woman’ Conquers the Domestic Box Office With Heroic $100.5 Million
LOS ANGELES - “Wonder Woman” is officially a box office hero. The Warner Bros. and DC Comics film appears to have delivered on massively high expectations -- as of the Sunday morning the super hero film is looking at a $100.5 million domestic opening weekend from 4,165 locations. That, combined with an international take of $122.5 million from 55 markets gives the movie a global opening of $223 million. $18.3 million of the global total came from Imax screens -- that’s the third biggest opening for a DC Comics film behind “The Dark Knight Rises” and ahead of “Suicide Squad.”

Maldives has announced it is severing diplomatic ties with Qatar over its alleged support for Islamist groups. It joined Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in cutting diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday and began withdrawing its diplomatic staff. The foreign ministry said in a statement that Maldives has pursued a policy of promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, and the decision was made because of its firm opposition to activities that encourage terrorism and extremism. Diplomatic relations between Maldives and Qatar began in 1984. Maldives, a predominantly Sunni Muslim nation with 341,000 people, also grapples with extremism. It reportedly has one of the highest per capital rates of people going to fight in foreign wars. Egypt’s foreign ministry says it has given the Qatari ambassador in Cairo 48 hours to leave the country and ordered its own envoy in Doha to return home, also within two days. Monday’s announcement came just hours after Egypt joined three of its Gulf Arab allies
— Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates — in severing ties with Qatar over its relations with Iran and support for militant Islamic groups. An earlier statement by the Egyptian ministry said Egypt was also suspending air and sea links to Qatar and, citing national security, closing its airspace to Qatari aircraft. Egypt’s relations with Qatar have been fraught with tension since the ouster in 2013 by the military of an Islamist president allied with Doha. It also accuses the tiny but energy-rich Gulf nation of supporting militant Islamic groups and meddling in its domestic affairs. Following suit, one of Libya’s three rival governments has announced cutting diplomatic relations with Qatar, after four Arab countries severed ties. Mohammed al-Deri, the Libyan foreign minister of the interim Libyan government, accused Qatar of “harboring terrorism” according to a Libyan official agency LANA. Chinese tourists contribute to increased hotel occupancy
MANGUPURA - In 2017, the hotel occupancy rate in tourism areas, particularly in the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) Nusa Dua, showed an increase. This increase is considered better than the same period last year (2016).
Managing Director of the ITDC Nusa Dua, Wayan Karioka, said that the average occupancy in the ITDC area currently reaches 80 percent. In the meantime, the occupancy rate in the same period of 2016 only reached 65 percent to 70 percent. According to him, the hotel room occupancy in the region is dominated by foreign tourists. Moreover, lately foreign tourists from China gave great contribution to the increased occupancy. Currently, the length of stay of tourists in the ITDC area ranges from 3.5 days to 3.6 days. “Hotel occupancy in 2017 is good at the

Prospect of strawberry cultivation promising
CULTIVATION of strawberry in Bangli has not been widely developed. Actually, if developed properly and seriously, the benefits are quite promising as what I Putu Angga from Dajan Umah hamlet, Pengotan, Kintamani, has already done. With high vivacity and unyielding to develop strawberry supported by a large enough capital, he finally can enjoy considerable benefits. When met at his garden on Sunday (Jun 4), he explained that initially he had no idea to cultivate strawberry. Before cultivating strawberries, he first had laying hen farm. Since his uncle has strawberry garden, he then learned from him about the cultivation of strawberry. “At first, there was no desire to cultivate strawberry because I previously had time to raise chicken. But somehow, after studying in Bogor and in some other places, I finally decided to try to cultivate strawberry and until this moment it still continues,” he said. Angga said that in addition to studying in Bogor with his uncle who happens to have strawberry garden, he is also always creative to learn elsewhere. One of which is the center for strawberry cultivation in Bedugul, Tabanan. However, in Bedugul the cultivation is directly made on the ground. In the meantime, he tried to develop with a system of husk (planted in plastic with hydroponic system) which eventually grows well. This 28-year-old man said that to develop this plant is not too difficult. Moreover, it is easy to cultivate the plant by using husk media and not planted directly on the ground. “The fruit produced is much sweeter than those planted directly on the ground. Besides, it is also saving water. If planted on the
ground, we usually spend 5 trucks of water every month, but if we use husk media it maximally needs 2 trucks of water,” he said. He has no problem in the matter of location of cultivation. For cultivation of strawberry, at least the location needs a height of 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level. Location of his strawberry farm is at an altitude of 1,100 above sea level. “So, the location is suitable for the development of strawberries,” he explained. When asked about the marketing of his strawberry, Angga said that so far he can only market the crops in Bangli alone. By the way, he is still overwhelmed to meet the needs of strawberry demand in Bangli. Moreover, to clarify the marketing, he has established cooperation with several places to market its strawberry namely Toya Devasya and other places. With the channel owned, if the locations hold an activity, it will be delivered to his locations. “With the number of plants owned, we harvest every two days with the capacity of 10 kg of strawberries. With this amount, I can meet the needs of consumers having cooperation with him including the needs at this location. In Bangli, it is only me cultivating this strawberry. No other farmers have developed this. So, if it continues to be developed, the prospect will be very promising,” he stated. Furthermore, he assessed that people are reluctant to cultivate the strawberry because of several factors such as capital and marketing. They do not know where to market the products. “They are afraid of suffering big losses because the production cost is high enough, and the marketing is not known where to take,” said Angga. (nan)

Scientists detect Einstein gravitational waves for a third time
LOUISIANA - Scientists have for a third time detected ripples in space from black holes that crashed together billions of light years from Earth, a discovery that confirms a new technique for observing cataclysmic events in the universe, research published on Thursday shows.
Such vibrations, known as gravitational waves, were predicted by Albert Einstein more than 100 years ago and were detected for the first time in September 2015. They are triggered by massive celestial objects that crash and merge, setting off ripples through space and across time. The latest detection occurred on Jan. 4, 2017. Twin lasers in Louisiana and Washington picked up the faint vibrations of two black holes that were 20 and 30 times more massive than the sun, respectively, before they spiraled toward each other and merged into a larger black hole. The discovery marks a turning point in the nascent field of gravitational-wave astronomy, which scientists are developing to learn more about how the universe formed. The first detection of gravitational waves created a scientific sensation. “We’re really moving from novelty to a new observational science,” said Massachusetts Institute of Technology astrophysicist David Shoemaker. A team of more than 1,000 scientists published their findings in this week’s issue of Physical Review
Letters. Like the previous two detections, the gravitational waves discovered in January slightly jiggled the Lshaped, 2.5 mile-long (4 km) laser beams that comprise the heart of the Laser Interferometer GravitationalWave Observatory, or LIGO. By matching the shape of the waves with computer models, scientists confirmed the collision took place about 3 billion light years from Earth, twice as far as previous detections. Black holes are regions so dense with matter that not even photons of light can escape their gravitational pull. Analysis shows the pair likely were spinning in different directions before merging, a clue that they formed separately in a dense cluster of stars, sank to the core of the cluster and then paired up, Georgia Institute of Technology physicist Laura Cadonati told reporters during a conference call. A second gravitational wave observatory in Italy is scheduled to begin operations this summer and will enhance LIGO’s ongoing studies. Scientists eventually expect to be able to find black holes merging about once a day. They also are on the hunt for other objects, including colliding neutron stars, which are the dense remnants of collapsed stars so packed with matter that a single teaspoon would weigh 10 million tons on Earth. U.S. probe to make unprecedented plunge into sun’s atmosphere CAPE CANAVERAL - A U.S. spacecraft set to launch next year will make a series of unprecedented dives into the sun’s scorching atmosphere to see how the star works and what can be done to better predict space weather events on Earth, scientists said on Wednesday. The Parker Solar Probe will have to survive temperatures as high as 2,500 Fahrenheit (1,371 Celsius), impacts by supersonic particles and powerful radiation as it circles as close as 4 million miles (7 million km) to the sun. Data sent back to Earth some 89 million miles (140 million km) away will help scientists figure out why the sun’s atmosphere, or corona, is hotter than its surface. “We’re going to be seven times closer (to the sun) than any other mission has ever been,” project scientist Nicola Fox, with Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, said during a broadcast on NASA TV. The mission, formerly known as the Solar Probe Plus, was approved in 2014. On Wednesday, the spacecraft was renamed to honor University of Chicago physicist Eugene Parker, who in 1958 correctly predicted the existence of the
solar wind, a continuous stream of charged particles that come off the sun and permeate the solar system. “It was a fundamental insight that forever changed the way in which we understood the sun, the heliosphere and in general interplanetary space,” said Eric Isaacs, executive vice president for research, innovation and national laboratories at the University of Chicago. The spacecraft, designed and built by the Johns Hopkins University laboratory, is scheduled to launch in July 2018 and fly around Venus seven times to get itself into orbit around the sun in December 2024. NASA is paying about $1.5 billion to build and launch the spacecraft. The probe is expected to orbit the sun 24 times, edging closer on each pass. The size of a small car, it will be outfitted with five science instruments to measure and sample the sun’s corona. In addition to expanding knowledge of stellar physics, the information is expected to help engineers design better instruments and techniques for predicting solar storms and other events that can cripple satellites, disrupt power grids and affect aircraft travel on Earth. Price of coffee increases, but production decreases
BANGLI - Price of coffee has been getting better recently. This condition causes coffee farmers in Kintamani region to breathe freely. However, the increased price is not matched by high production. It happens because coffee production decreases about 50 percent before entering massive harvest season. A coffee farmer from Manikliyu, Kintamani, I Nengah Sugiman, said the price of coffee is quite good. Currently, the price of raw coffee bean is IDR 8,000. He said the increasing price of coffee even gives a hope to coffee farmers in
Kintamani to be able to enjoy the benefits. “Coffee price is starting to get better now. Previously, the price of raw coffee bean was only IDR 4,000-5,000. coffee directly in trees according to the price agreed by both parties. “This system has been done frequently and carefully calculated by both parties. By and large, there are rarely owners and buyers suffering losses. Commonly they equally get profits, but it also depends on their destiny,” he said. He hoped the increasing price of coffee will encourage farmers to plant coffee by carefully selecting good coffee cuttings that are really suitable to be planted in their territory. By that way, there is no more crop failure due to cutting problems.
Price of coffee has been getting better recently. This condition causes coffee farmers in Kintamani region to breathe freely.
So, farmers have no despair to grow coffee due to dropped price of coffee. “In the meantime, to keep the coffee price stability, I hope relevant agency, in this case the agriculture and fishery agency, can participate in maintaining the stability of coffee price so that it will not plummet. Buyan fishermen ask govt to boost restocking SINGARAJA - Fishermen in Lake Buyan, Pancasari village, Sukasada, should be frustrated following the catch of the fish plummeted. The condition having lasted for three months causes some fishermen to switch to other profession. In order not to continue, the district government is asked to intensify restocking. A local fisherman, Ketut Panji, said that fishing profession is still carried out by some residents of the village being famous for its agrarian sector. But lately, their fate is increasingly more apprehensive following the sluggish catch of fish. “Since three months ago, our fish catch is very minimal. It is getting harder to be a fisherman,” he said last Sunday (Jun 4). Previously, in a day by installing three nets, fishermen could get fish at least 5-10 kg. Unlike the current condition, with dozens of nets fishermen only get 2 kg. “I am also confused where the fish here go, whereas we have installed many nets, but get a little fish,” he complained. Faced with this condition, a number of fishermen chose to shift to another profession, one of them
as farm laborer. It is carried out because the results are considered more promising. “Not all the fishermen switch their profession. Later on, if the fish has multiplied, they will come back to be fishermen,” explained this middle-aged man. In order to increase fish populations, the government of Buleleng has actually done restocking. However, it is considered less maximal because it takes place once a year to coincide with the Twin Lakes Festival. “The lake is the source of life. Hopefully, the district government will intensify the distribution of fingerlings, not only during the implementation of such event,” he hoped. When confirmed separately, Head of the Buleleng Fisheries Agency, Ni Made Arnika, said the restocking in the lake adjacent to Lake Tamblingan is done every year. Her agency is ready to meet the demands of fishermen to further intensify the program. “It has become an annual program. He said the road damage at Kayuselem hamlet having lasted for more than five years has caused most residents in the district to seek health services to Karangasem. This was proved by the poisoning case last Thursday, where residents preferred to rush their family member to Pratama Hospital at West Tianyar, Kubu, Karangasem compared to Kintamani V health center. “If rushed to Kintamani health center is difficult because the road is badly damaged. It is very difficult to pass through by cars. In the meantime, in a family there are even two to three people becoming the poisoning victim. Since the condition is urgent, residents prefer
the hospital in Karangasem to Kintamani V health center though it is closer by distance,” he explained. Catur mentioned the damaged road at Kayuselem hamlet happens to approximately 5 kilometers. Other than Kayuselem, the road damage occurs from Bantas hamlet to Pradi hamlet. “However, the most severe is at Kayuselem and Bukit Tungtung,” he said. To repair the damaged road, so far his side has submitted proposals for repair to district government through village and subdistrict development plan meeting. However, until now the road damage becoming the responsibility of district government has not got any repair. He said that district government quibbled to be unable to repair the damaged roads in the area behind
the hill due to difficult terrain. “So far, the government has many reasons about it, such as difficult terrain, budget constrain and no one wants to work it on,” he said. Lastly, he got information that some of the budgets for Hulundanu-Kayuselem road repair this year will be diverted to repair collapsed revetment at Bantas hamlet. “If it is diverted, well... the remaining is 600 meters and will not get to Kayuselem,” he said. Since it has not got repair from the government, he added, so far local residents are forced to repair by patching the damaged roads by means of cement independently. Finally, the latest independent road repair by residents was carried out last Friday after the poisoning incident. “Materials such as cement, sand and water along with the workmanship are carried out by local community. China upset at Mattis’ “irresponsible remarks” on S.China Sea
SHANGHAI - China has expressed its strong dissatisfaction with what it labelled “irresponsible remarks” on the South China Sea by U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis during a security forum at the weekend. Mattis accused China of having contempt for other nations’ interests and disregarding international law. He told the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that the construction and militarisation of artificial islands in the South China Sea undermined regional stability. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China’s construction of facilities in the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea was aimed at improving working conditions for people stationed there, maintaining sovereignty and fulfilling China’s international responsibilities. The sovereign activities undertaken by China had nothing to do with militarisation, Hua said in remarks posted on the ministry’s

China’s claims in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes each year, are contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. BUSINESS Oil rises on Qatar rift, sterling steadies after London attack LONDON - Oil rose 1 percent before paring gains on Monday after a diplomatic rift involving some of the Arab world’s major energy producers, while sterling weakened only marginally following a deadly attack in London days before a parliamentary election. The dollar lifted off seven-month lows hit on Friday in reaction to a weakerthan-forecast U.S. jobs report as U.S. Treasury yields rose and markets signalled they expected the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates next week.
European shares were marginally lower, failing to build on momentum from Asia, with some markets closed for a holiday. In the Middle East, Qatar’s main stock index fell more than 7 percent after Saudi Arabia - the world’s biggest crude oil exporter - the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain cut ties with Qatar, accusing the Gulf Arab state of supporting terrorism. The move escalated a dispute over Qatar’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood, the world’s oldest Islamist movement. Dubai stocks fell 1.7 percent and the main Saudi index dropped 0.8 percent. Qatar is the world’s biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a major supplier of condensate. Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, rose more than 1 percent at one point, recouping some of last week’s 4 percent loses, before paring gains. It stood at $50.29 a barrel, up 0.7 percent on the day at 0836 GMT. “There is not much geopolitical risk premium priced into oil right now, (but) if tensions do ratchet higher between the key OPEC producers, like Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq, then the market will start paying attention to this,” said Virendra Chauhan, an oil analyst at consultants Energy Aspects. Apart from all having once been part of the Majapahit kingdom, which certainly left its mark on the aesthetics traditions of Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia, these three nations no doubt share many other similarities despite their divergent histories, languages and social conditions. These simulates and differences have been evolving over time and have given birth to contemporary art forms that express both. Recently 18 brave artists from Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand undertook to explore some of the similarities in the art and culture of these three nations as part of the most recent rendition of ART EXCHANGE PROJECT, an independently organized series of exchanges between artists of Indonesia and other other Asian countries (as well as a few renditions in Europe and Africa). These exchanges involves artists from the participating countries going to visit, create, explore and exhibit in the countries of the other participating artists. The modern era has brought increasing opportunities for people from all walks of life to see into the cultures of others, whether through ease of access from air travels, communications technology or mass media. Artists from all over the world are now exposed to an ever more globalized aesthetics. How this is processed and expressed by artists of different
localities and how the particular aesthetic language and meaning derived from these localities takes form in the face of this influence is apparently endless and increasingly complex. Arma Museum’s contemporary art gallery is displaying the works of these 18 artists and during the vernissage for the ART EXCHANGE exhibition, founder of Arma, Agung Rai expressed his sincere appreciation for this project that has brought artists from abroad to share their vision with Ubud. Agung Rai explained that art is such an integral part of life in Bali that the Balinese language has no word to distinguish this creative activity from other parts of life. He also explained that part of Arma’s mission is to maintain the essence of what is known as Modern Traditional Balinese Art and at the same time expose painters of this style to other styles, techniques and visions so that local artists can continue to expand their aesthetic

Saudi, Egypt lead Arab states cutting Qatar ties, Iran blames Trump
DUBAI - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed their ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting terrorism and opening up the worst rift in years among some of the most powerful states in the Arab world.
Iran -- long at odds with Saudi Arabia and a behindthe-scenes target of the move -- immediately blamed U.S. President Donald Trump for setting the stage during his recent trip to Riyadh. Gulf Arab states and Egypt have already long resented Qatar’s support for Islamists, especially the Muslim Brotherhood which they regard as a dangerous political enemy. The coordinated move, with Yemen and Libya’s eastern-based government joining in later, created a dramatic rift among the Arab nations, many of which are in OPEC. Announcing the closure of transport ties with Qatar, the three Gulf states gave Qatari visitors and residents two weeks to leave. Qatar was also expelled from the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen. Oil giant Saudi Arabia accused Qatar of backing militant groups -- some backed by regional arch-rival Iran -- and broadcasting their ideology, an apparent reference to Qatar’s influential state-owned satellite channel al Jazeera. “(Qatar) embraces multiple terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at disturbing stability in the region, including the Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS (Islamic State) and al-Qaeda, and promotes the message and schemes

In shadow of deadly attacks, British election campaign resumes LONDON - After militants killed seven people and injured 48 in London, British Prime Minister Theresa May resumes campaigning on Monday just three days before a national election which polls show is much tighter than previously predicted. May said Britain must be tougher in stamping out Islamist extremism after three knife-wielding assailants rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed others nearby. Following the third militant attack in Britain in less than three months, May said Thursday’s election would go ahead and that Britain had been far too tolerant of extremism. “Violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process,” May, who served as interior minister from 2010 to 2016, said outside her Downing Street office on Sunday. Islamic State, which is losing territory in Syria and Iraq to an offensive backed by a U.S.-led coalition, said its militants were responsible for the attack, though it is unclear what links the attackers had to the group. The government also reaffirmed its support and solidarity towards the British government in the efforts to combat terrorism and terrorist acts. The police have recorded at least 38 other Indonesian citizens in the Philippines who are involved in terror networks. The 38 Indonesians are suspected of joining the ISIS-affiliated Maute militant group. Meanwhile, National Polices Public Relations Division Chief Inspector General Pol Setyo Wasisto said, the 38 Indonesians involved in terror networks in Marawi City, Mindanao, the Philippines, were largely men. “As many as 38 Indonesian citizens are involved in terror acts comprising 37 men and a woman,” he stated. Of the total, four people are believed to have been killed, 12 deported to Indonesia, and 22 are still in the Philippines. Mount Marapi of West Sumatra erupts
JAKARTA - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted on Sunday spewing clouds of volcanic ash over the region of Tanah Datar of the Sumatran province. Head of Data and Information Center of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement received here on Sunday that the agency has set an exclusive zone within a radius of three kilometers from the Mount Marapis peak following the eruption. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported that Mount Marapi (2,891 masl) erupted twice on Sunday at 10:01 a.m. and 10:22 a.m local time. The first eruption sent a 300 meter high plume of smoke from the peak while the
second one spewed ash much higher at around 700 meter high from the mounts peak. “We urged people to remain calm and avoid misleading issues. The PVMBG will deliver early warning in the future will the mounts activity increase to pose danger,” Nugroho said. There have been no refuge camps set up yet since the residential areas are located outside the three kilometer radius of the exclusion zone. Mount Marapi has been put on alert level II since August 3 2011. After the eruption occurred, there has been no increase of volcanic activities detected. Meanwhile, District Head of Tanah Datar Irdiansyah Tarmizi said that the volcanic ash of Mount Marapi has blanketed four subdistricts namely Batipuh, Pariangan, Sungai Tarab and Salimpaung. Saudi, Egypt lead Arab states cutting Qatar ties, Iran blames Trump
DUBAI - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed their ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting terrorism and opening up the worst rift in years among some of the most powerful states in the Arab world.
Iran -- long at odds with Saudi Arabia and a behindthe-scenes target of the move -- immediately blamed U.S. President Donald Trump for setting the stage during his recent trip to Riyadh. Gulf Arab states and Egypt have already long resented Qatar’s support for Islamists, especially the Muslim Brotherhood which they regard as a dangerous political enemy. The coordinated move, with Yemen and Libya’s eastern-based government joining in later, created a dramatic rift among the Arab nations, many of which are in OPEC. Announcing the closure of transport ties with Qatar, the three Gulf states gave Qatari visitors and residents two weeks to leave. Qatar was also expelled from the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen. Oil giant Saudi Arabia accused Qatar of backing militant groups -- some backed by regional arch-rival Iran -- and broadcasting their ideology, an apparent reference to Qatar’s influential state-owned satellite channel al Jazeera. “(Qatar) embraces multiple terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at disturbing stability in the region, including the Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS (Islamic State) and al-Qaeda, and promotes the message and schemes

Iran saw America pulling the strings. “What is happening is the preliminary result of the sword dance,” Hamid Aboutalebi, deputy chief of staff of Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, tweeted in a reference to Trump’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia. Trump and other U.S. officials participated in a traditional sword dance during the trip in which he called on Muslim countries to stand united against Islamist extremists and singled out Iran as a key source of funding and support for militant groups. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters in Sydney on Monday that the spat would not effect the fight against Islamist militants and that Washington has encouraged its Gulf allies to resolve their differences. A split between Doha and its closest allies can have repercussions around the Middle East, where Gulf states have used their financial and political power to influence events in Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Yemen. In shadow of deadly attacks, British election campaign resumes LONDON - After militants killed seven people and injured 48 in London, British Prime Minister Theresa May resumes campaigning on Monday just three days before a national election which polls show is much tighter than previously predicted. May said Britain must be tougher in stamping out Islamist extremism after three knife-wielding assailants rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed others nearby. Following the third militant attack in Britain in less than three months, May said Thursday’s election would go ahead and that Britain had been far too tolerant of extremism. “Violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process,” May, who served as interior minister from 2010 to 2016, said outside her Downing Street office on Sunday. Islamic State, which is losing territory in Syria and Iraq to an offensive backed by a U.S.-led coalition, said its militants were responsible for the attack, though it is unclear what links the attackers had to the group. London police chief Cressida Dick said that while some of the recent attacks in Britain had international links, they had a largely domestic centre of gravity. May said the three recent attacks, which have claimed at least 34 lives, are not thought to be connected. But she said Britain was under threat from a new breed of crude copycat militants who might not have spent years plotting or even been radicalised online. JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has condemned the London terror attack that took place on Saturday, leading to the deaths of six people and leaving dozens others wounded. The Indonesian government extends its condolences and deep sympathy to those who were affected and prays for the immediate recovery of those who have been injured by the incident, according to a press statement, released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received here, Monday. The government also reaffirmed its support and solidarity towards the British government in the efforts to combat terrorism and terrorist acts. It was previously reported that a terror attack had taken place on Saturday (June 3) at the London Bridge area, in which civilians were affected. The most recent attack was recorded as the third one in the span of three months, following an attack near the British Parliament building in London on Mar 22 and a suicide bombing incident at a concert venue in Manchester on May 22. The Indonesian Embassy in London has coordinated with the local authorities and continues to monitor the security situation in Britain. Up until this report was released, the Indonesian Embassy in London confirmed that no information was yet received on Indonesian casualties in any of the attacks. The Indonesian government has encouraged Indonesians residing in London or any other areas in Britain to remain vigilant and avoid visiting places that could potentially be targeted by terrorists. 16 Indonesian citizens not involved with ISIS: Police chief JAKARTA - Indonesian National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian confirmed that 16 Indonesian citizens who had been repatriated from the Philippines to Indonesia were not involved in acts of terror in the country. Dozens of Indonesian citizens have been investigated by the National Polices Special Detachment 88 counterterrorism squad, he revealed here on Monday. “They are generally tabligh pilgrims. Hence, they visit various countries, including the Philippines, to carry out only religious activities,” he explained. The police have recorded at least 38 other Indonesian citizens in the Philippines who are involved in terror networks. The 38 Indonesians are suspected of joining the ISIS-affiliated Maute militant group. Meanwhile, National Polices Public Relations Division Chief Inspector General Pol Setyo Wasisto said, the 38 Indonesians involved in terror networks in Marawi City, Mindanao, the Philippines, were largely men. “As many as 38 Indonesian citizens are involved in terror acts comprising 37 men and a woman,” he stated. Of the total, four people are believed to have been killed, 12 deported to Indonesia, and 22 are still in the Philippines. JAKARTA - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted on Sunday spewing clouds of volcanic ash over the region of Tanah Datar of the Sumatran province. Head of Data and Information Center of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement received here on Sunday that the agency has set an exclusive zone within a radius of three kilometers from the Mount Marapis peak following the eruption. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported that Mount Marapi (2,891 masl) erupted twice on Sunday at 10:01 a.m. and 10:22 a.m local time. The first eruption sent a 300 meter high plume of smoke from the peak while the
second one spewed ash much higher at around 700 meter high from the mounts peak. “We urged people to remain calm and avoid misleading issues. The PVMBG will deliver early warning in the future will the mounts activity increase to pose danger,” Nugroho said. There have been no refuge camps set up yet since the residential areas are located outside the three kilometer radius of the exclusion zone. Mount Marapi has been put on alert level II since August 3 2011. After the eruption occurred, there has been no increase of volcanic activities detected. Meanwhile, District Head of Tanah Datar Irdiansyah Tarmizi said that the volcanic ash of Mount Marapi has blanketed four subdistricts namely Batipuh, Pariangan, Sungai Tarab and Salimpaung. BUSINESS Oil rises on Qatar rift, sterling steadies after London attack LONDON - Oil rose 1 percent before paring gains on Monday after a diplomatic rift involving some of the Arab world’s major energy producers, while sterling weakened only marginally following a deadly attack in London days before a parliamentary election. The dollar lifted off seven-month lows hit on Friday in reaction to a weakerthan-forecast U.S. jobs report as U.S. Treasury yields rose and markets signalled they expected the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates next week.
European shares were marginally lower, failing to build on momentum from Asia, with some markets closed for a holiday. In the Middle East, Qatar’s main stock index fell more than 7 percent after Saudi Arabia - the world’s biggest crude oil exporter - the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain cut ties with Qatar, accusing the Gulf Arab state of supporting terrorism. The move escalated a dispute over Qatar’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood, the world’s oldest Islamist movement. Dubai stocks fell 1.7 percent and the main Saudi index dropped 0.8 percent. Qatar is the world’s biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a major supplier of condensate. Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, rose more than 1 percent at one point, recouping some of last week’s 4 percent loses, before paring gains. It stood at $50.29 a barrel, up 0.7 percent on the day at 0836 GMT. “There is not much geopolitical risk premium priced into oil right now, (but) if tensions do ratchet higher between the key OPEC producers, like Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq, then the market will start paying attention to this,” said Virendra Chauhan, an oil analyst at consultants Energy Aspects. Britain’s pound fell half a cent against the dollar after the third militant attack in Britain in less than three months but recovered to trade down just 0.1 percent at $1.2875. Apart from all having once been part of the Majapahit kingdom, which certainly left its mark on the aesthetics traditions of Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia, these three nations no doubt share many other similarities despite their divergent histories, languages and social conditions. These simulates and differences have been evolving over time and have given birth to contemporary art forms that express both. Recently 18 brave artists from Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand undertook to explore some of the similarities in the art and culture of these three nations as part of the most recent rendition of ART EXCHANGE PROJECT, an independently organized series of exchanges between artists of Indonesia and other other Asian countries (as well as a few renditions in Europe and Africa). These exchanges involves artists from the participating countries going to visit, create, explore and exhibit in the countries of the other participating artists. The modern era has brought increasing opportunities for people from all walks of life to see into the cultures of others, whether through ease of access from air travels, communications technology or mass media. Artists from all over the world are now exposed to an ever more globalized aesthetics. How this is processed and expressed by artists of different
localities and how the particular aesthetic language and meaning derived from these localities takes form in the face of this influence is apparently endless and increasingly complex. Arma Museum’s contemporary art gallery is displaying the works of these 18 artists and during the vernissage for the ART EXCHANGE exhibition, founder of Arma, Agung Rai expressed his sincere appreciation for this project that has brought artists from abroad to share their vision with Ubud. Agung Rai explained that art is such an integral part of life in Bali that the Balinese language has no word to distinguish this creative activity from other parts of life. He also explained that part of Arma’s mission is to maintain the essence of what is known as Modern Traditional Balinese Art and at the same time expose painters of this style to other styles, techniques and visions so that local artists can continue to expand their aesthetic

Buyan fishermen ask govt to boost restocking SINGARAJA - Fishermen in Lake Buyan, Pancasari village, Sukasada, should be frustrated following the catch of the fish plummeted. The condition having lasted for three months causes some fishermen to switch to other profession. In order not to continue, the district government is asked to intensify restocking. A local fisherman, Ketut Panji, said that fishing profession is still carried out by some residents of the village being famous for its agrarian sector. But lately, their fate is increasingly more apprehensive following the sluggish catch of fish. “Since three months ago, our fish catch is very minimal. It is getting harder to be a fisherman,” he said last Sunday (Jun 4). Previously, in a day by installing three nets, fishermen could get fish at least 5-10 kg. Unlike the current condition, with dozens of nets fishermen only get 2 kg. “I am also confused where the fish here go, whereas we have installed many nets, but get a little fish,” he complained. Faced with this condition, a number of fishermen chose to shift to another profession, one of them
as farm laborer. It is carried out because the results are considered more promising. “Not all the fishermen switch their profession. Later on, if the fish has multiplied, they will come back to be fishermen,” explained this middle-aged man. In order to increase fish populations, the government of Buleleng has actually done restocking. However, it is considered less maximal because it takes place once a year to coincide with the Twin Lakes Festival. “The lake is the source of life. Hopefully, the district government will intensify the distribution of fingerlings, not only during the implementation of such event,” he hoped. When confirmed separately, Head of the Buleleng Fisheries Agency, Ni Made Arnika, said the restocking in the lake adjacent to Lake Tamblingan is done every year. Her agency is ready to meet the demands of fishermen to further intensify the program. “It has become an annual program. To repair the damaged road, so far his side has submitted proposals for repair to district government through village and subdistrict development plan meeting. However, until now the road damage becoming the responsibility of district government has not got any repair. He said that district government quibbled to be unable to repair the damaged roads in the area behind
the hill due to difficult terrain. “So far, the government has many reasons about it, such as difficult terrain, budget constrain and no one wants to work it on,” he said. Lastly, he got information that some of the budgets for Hulundanu-Kayuselem road repair this year will be diverted to repair collapsed revetment at Bantas hamlet. “If it is diverted, well... the remaining is 600 meters and will not get to Kayuselem,” he said. Since it has not got repair from the government, he added, so far local residents are forced to repair by patching the damaged roads by means of cement independently. Finally, the latest independent road repair by residents was carried out last Friday after the poisoning incident. “Materials such as cement, sand and water along with the workmanship are carried out by local community. China upset at Mattis’ “irresponsible remarks” on S.China Sea
SHANGHAI - China has expressed its strong dissatisfaction with what it labelled “irresponsible remarks” on the South China Sea by U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis during a security forum at the weekend. Mattis accused China of having contempt for other nations’ interests and disregarding international law. He told the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that the construction and militarisation of artificial islands in the South China Sea undermined regional stability. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China’s construction of facilities in the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea was aimed at improving working conditions for people stationed there, maintaining sovereignty and fulfilling China’s international responsibilities. The sovereign activities undertaken by China had nothing to do with militarisation, Hua said in remarks posted on the ministry’s
website late on Sunday. China’s claims in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes each year, are contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. China and Japan both claim islands in the East China Sea. Hua said countries around the South China Sea had tried to lower tensions, but others outside the region “have been bent on going against the trend, making repeated erroneous remarks, ignoring the facts and confusing black from white with entirely ulterior motives”. “China is resolutely opposed to this and urges the concerned parties to stop issuing irresponsible remarks and fully respect the efforts of the countries in the region

But U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the Trump administration should be judged for its actions and not words. “I hope the fact that we are here demonstrates that is certainly not this administration’s view or intention to somehow put at arm’s length the other important allies and partners in the world,” Tillerson told reporters in Sydney. “That’s why we’re here ... That’s why we engage with our counterparts,” Tillerson said. He is in Sydney for an annual

Scientists detect Einstein gravitational waves for a third time
LOUISIANA - Scientists have for a third time detected ripples in space from black holes that crashed together billions of light years from Earth, a discovery that confirms a new technique for observing cataclysmic events in the universe, research published on Thursday shows.
Such vibrations, known as gravitational waves, were predicted by Albert Einstein more than 100 years ago and were detected for the first time in September 2015. They are triggered by massive celestial objects that crash and merge, setting off ripples through space and across time. The latest detection occurred on Jan. 4, 2017. Twin lasers in Louisiana and Washington picked up the faint vibrations of two black holes that were 20 and 30 times more massive than the sun, respectively, before they spiraled toward each other and merged into a larger black hole. The discovery marks a turning point in the nascent field of gravitational-wave astronomy, which scientists are developing to learn more about how the universe formed. The first detection of gravitational waves created a scientific sensation. “We’re really moving from novelty to a new observational science,” said Massachusetts Institute of Technology astrophysicist David Shoemaker. A team of more than 1,000 scientists published their findings in this week’s issue of Physical Review
Letters. Like the previous two detections, the gravitational waves discovered in January slightly jiggled the Lshaped, 2.5 mile-long (4 km) laser beams that comprise the heart of the Laser Interferometer GravitationalWave Observatory, or LIGO. By matching the shape of the waves with computer models, scientists confirmed the collision took place about 3 billion light years from Earth, twice as far as previous detections. Black holes are regions so dense with matter that not even photons of light can escape their gravitational pull. Analysis shows the pair likely were spinning in different directions before merging, a clue that they formed separately in a dense cluster of stars, sank to the core of the cluster and then paired up, Georgia Institute of Technology physicist Laura Cadonati told reporters during a conference call. A second gravitational wave observatory in Italy is scheduled to begin operations this summer and will enhance LIGO’s ongoing studies. Scientists eventually expect to be able to find black holes merging about once a day. They also are on the hunt for other objects, including colliding neutron stars, which are the dense remnants of collapsed stars so packed with matter that a single teaspoon would weigh 10 million tons on Earth. U.S. probe to make unprecedented plunge into sun’s atmosphere CAPE CANAVERAL - A U.S. spacecraft set to launch next year will make a series of unprecedented dives into the sun’s scorching atmosphere to see how the star works and what can be done to better predict space weather events on Earth, scientists said on Wednesday. The Parker Solar Probe will have to survive temperatures as high as 2,500 Fahrenheit (1,371 Celsius), impacts by supersonic particles and powerful radiation as it circles as close as 4 million miles (7 million km) to the sun. Data sent back to Earth some 89 million miles (140 million km) away will help scientists figure out why the sun’s atmosphere, or corona, is hotter than its surface. “We’re going to be seven times closer (to the sun) than any other mission has ever been,” project scientist Nicola Fox, with Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, said during a broadcast on NASA TV. The mission, formerly known as the Solar Probe Plus, was approved in 2014. On Wednesday, the spacecraft was renamed to honor University of Chicago physicist Eugene Parker, who in 1958 correctly predicted the existence of the
solar wind, a continuous stream of charged particles that come off the sun and permeate the solar system. “It was a fundamental insight that forever changed the way in which we understood the sun, the heliosphere and in general interplanetary space,” said Eric Isaacs, executive vice president for research, innovation and national laboratories at the University of Chicago. The spacecraft, designed and built by the Johns Hopkins University laboratory, is scheduled to launch in July 2018 and fly around Venus seven times to get itself into orbit around the sun in December 2024. NASA is paying about $1.5 billion to build and launch the spacecraft. The probe is expected to orbit the sun 24 times, edging closer on each pass. The size of a small car, it will be outfitted with five science instruments to measure and sample the sun’s corona. In addition to expanding knowledge of stellar physics, the information is expected to help engineers design better instruments and techniques for predicting solar storms and other events that can cripple satellites, disrupt power grids and affect aircraft travel on Earth. Price of coffee increases, but production decreases
BANGLI - Price of coffee has been getting better recently. This condition causes coffee farmers in Kintamani region to breathe freely. However, the increased price is not matched by high production. It happens because coffee production decreases about 50 percent before entering massive harvest season. A coffee farmer from Manikliyu, Kintamani, I Nengah Sugiman, said the price of coffee is quite good. Currently, the price of raw coffee bean is IDR 8,000. He said the increasing price of coffee even gives a hope to coffee farmers in
Kintamani to be able to enjoy the benefits. “Coffee price is starting to get better now. Previously, the price of raw coffee bean was only IDR 4,000-5,000. Hopefully, this price continues to survive and if possible, can increase,” said Sugiman, recently. Sugiman said that the increasing price of coffee is not balanced with the abundant coffee production because it has not entered massive harvest season this year and it just comes every two years. It happens because the coffee branches have been cut off, so the fruits produced
will decline. When the young twigs grow, they will bear many fruits. “Now, it’s not a massive harvest season so the produce will decrease by about 50 percent. The massive harvest will last next year around July-August,” he said. He said that coffee farmers are already able to enjoy their harvest this year where they have started to pick their coffee bean since May. In addition to being picked by farmers themselves, some farmers also sold their coffee bean in trees through middlemen. In other words, the owners let the middlemen pick their
coffee directly in trees according to the price agreed by both parties. “This system has been done frequently and carefully calculated by both parties. By and large, there are rarely owners and buyers suffering losses. Commonly they equally get profits, but it also depends on their destiny,” he said. He hoped the increasing price of coffee will encourage farmers to plant coffee by carefully selecting good coffee cuttings that are really suitable to be planted in their territory. By that way, there is no more crop failure due to cutting problems.

With stable price, farmers will automatically not be traumatized to grow coffee considering the selling price does not match with production cost. Chinese tourists contribute to increased hotel occupancy
MANGUPURA - In 2017, the hotel occupancy rate in tourism areas, particularly in the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) Nusa Dua, showed an increase. This increase is considered better than the same period last year (2016).
Managing Director of the ITDC Nusa Dua, Wayan Karioka, said that the average occupancy in the ITDC area currently reaches 80 percent. In the meantime, the occupancy rate in the same period of 2016 only reached 65 percent to 70 percent. According to him, the hotel room occupancy in the region is dominated by foreign tourists. Moreover, lately foreign tourists from China gave great contribution to the increased occupancy. Currently, the length of stay of tourists in the ITDC area ranges from 3.5 days to 3.6 days. “Hotel occupancy in 2017 is good at the

Prospect of strawberry cultivation promising
CULTIVATION of strawberry in Bangli has not been widely developed. Actually, if developed properly and seriously, the benefits are quite promising as what I Putu Angga from Dajan Umah hamlet, Pengotan, Kintamani, has already done. With high vivacity and unyielding to develop strawberry supported by a large enough capital, he finally can enjoy considerable benefits. When met at his garden on Sunday (Jun 4), he explained that initially he had no idea to cultivate strawberry. Before cultivating strawberries, he first had laying hen farm. Since his uncle has strawberry garden, he then learned from him about the cultivation of strawberry. “At first, there was no desire to cultivate strawberry because I previously had time to raise chicken. But somehow, after studying in Bogor and in some other places, I finally decided to try to cultivate strawberry and until this moment it still continues,” he said. Angga said that in addition to studying in Bogor with his uncle who happens to have strawberry garden, he is also always creative to learn elsewhere. One of which is the center for strawberry cultivation in Bedugul, Tabanan. However, in Bedugul the cultivation is directly made on the ground. In the meantime, he tried to develop with a system of husk (planted in plastic with hydroponic system) which eventually grows well. This 28-year-old man said that to develop this plant is not too difficult. Moreover, it is easy to cultivate the plant by using husk media and not planted directly on the ground. “The fruit produced is much sweeter than those planted directly on the ground. Besides, it is also saving water. If planted on the
ground, we usually spend 5 trucks of water every month, but if we use husk media it maximally needs 2 trucks of water,” he said. He has no problem in the matter of location of cultivation. For cultivation of strawberry, at least the location needs a height of 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level. Location of his strawberry farm is at an altitude of 1,100 above sea level. “So, the location is suitable for the development of strawberries,” he explained. When asked about the marketing of his strawberry, Angga said that so far he can only market the crops in Bangli alone. By the way, he is still overwhelmed to meet the needs of strawberry demand in Bangli. Moreover, to clarify the marketing, he has established cooperation with several places to market its strawberry namely Toya Devasya and other places. With the channel owned, if the locations hold an activity, it will be delivered to his locations. “With the number of plants owned, we harvest every two days with the capacity of 10 kg of strawberries. With this amount, I can meet the needs of consumers having cooperation with him including the needs at this location. In Bangli, it is only me cultivating this strawberry. No other farmers have developed this. So, if it continues to be developed, the prospect will be very promising,” he stated. Furthermore, he assessed that people are reluctant to cultivate the strawberry because of several factors such as capital and marketing. They do not know where to market the products. “They are afraid of suffering big losses because the production cost is high enough, and the marketing is not known where to take,” said Angga. (nan)

Cosby’s sex assault trial to begin after years of U.S. allegations PENNSYLVANIA - Comedian Bill Cosby goes on trial for sexual assault on Monday in Pennsylvania, the culmination of years of allegations that have torpedoed his show business career. Cosby, 79, once a beloved entertainer known for his familyfriendly brand of comedy, is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in 2004. Constand, a former basketball player at Cosby’s alma mater Temple University and more than three decades his junior, will appear as the prosecution’s key witness during the trial, which is expected to last two weeks. Her accusation is the only one to result in criminal charges out of dozens of similar allegations from women stretching back decades. Cosby has denied ever assaulting anyone, saying the encounters with Constand and others were consensual. The trial will take place in the Philadelphia suburb of Norristown, though the jurors have been brought from Pittsburgh at the request of defense lawyers. It was Constand’s own civil lawsuit, filed in 2005 weeks after the Montgomery County district attorney’s office declined to bring charges, that eventually led the same office to prosecute Cosby in 2015. In what was then a sealed deposition, Cosby acknowledged he had obtained Quaaludes, a sedative, in order to give them to young women with whom he wanted to have sex. A federal judge released parts of the deposition in 2015, prompting prosecutors to reopen the case. Constand has told investigators that she viewed Cosby as a mentor and that he plied her with wine and unidentified pills, leaving her unable to resist his sexual advances. Defense lawyers will aim to undermine Constand’s credibility, questioning why she failed to report the crime for a year and then could not recall certain details like the month in which it occurred. Prosecutors will also call a second accuser, whose name is not yet public, to bolster Constand’s testimony. The woman, known as Kacey, says Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1996. (rtr)

‘Wonder Woman’ Conquers the Domestic Box Office With Heroic $100.5 Million
LOS ANGELES - “Wonder Woman” is officially a box office hero. The Warner Bros. and DC Comics film appears to have delivered on massively high expectations -- as of the Sunday morning the super hero film is looking at a $100.5 million domestic opening weekend from 4,165 locations. That, combined with an international take of $122.5 million from 55 markets gives the movie a global opening of $223 million. $18.3 million of the global total came from Imax screens -- that’s the third biggest opening for a DC Comics film behind “The Dark Knight Rises” and ahead of “Suicide Squad.”

“Globally this property has just resonated with fans,” said Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein. “There’s something iconic about Diana and the story of Wonder Woman that’s hitting the zeitgeist perfectly.” Compared with other super hero movies, “Wonder Woman” is expecting a larger domestic opening than “Iron Man” ($98.6 million); “Doctor Strange” ($85 million);
“Thor” ($65.7 million); but less than “Deadpool” ($132 million) and “Man of Steel” ($116.6 million). Patty Jenkins now holds the banner for the best domestic opening for a female director, topping “Fifty Shades of Grey’s” Sam Taylor-Johnson ($85.1 million). Before “Wonder Woman,” Jenkins’ only feature was “Monster” -- an Academy Award winner that she
made more than a decade ago with an $8 million budget. Gal Gadot stars in the film as the titular hero. The Israeli actress -also known for her role in the Fast and Furious franchise -- made her debut as Diana Prince in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and will also appear at least twice more in both “Justice League” movies if she doesn’t get a sequel of her own. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi was quoted on the ministry’s website as calling for a “clear and explicit dialogue” among the feuding nations. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, discussed the recent developments in a phone conversation. Maldives has announced it is severing diplomatic ties with Qatar over its alleged support for Islamist groups. It joined Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in cutting diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday and began withdrawing its diplomatic staff. The foreign ministry said in a statement that Maldives has pursued a policy of promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, and the decision was made because of its firm opposition to activities that encourage terrorism and extremism. Diplomatic relations between Maldives and Qatar began in 1984. Maldives, a predominantly Sunni Muslim nation with 341,000 people, also grapples with extremism. It reportedly has one of the highest per capital rates of people going to fight in foreign wars. Egypt’s foreign ministry says it has given the Qatari ambassador in Cairo 48 hours to leave the country and ordered its own envoy in Doha to return home, also within two days. Monday’s announcement came just hours after Egypt joined three of its Gulf Arab allies
— Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates — in severing ties with Qatar over its relations with Iran and support for militant Islamic groups. An earlier statement by the Egyptian ministry said Egypt was also suspending air and sea links to Qatar and, citing national security, closing its airspace to Qatari aircraft. Egypt’s relations with Qatar have been fraught with tension since the ouster in 2013 by the military of an Islamist president allied with Doha. It also accuses the tiny but energy-rich Gulf nation of supporting militant Islamic groups and meddling in its domestic affairs. Following suit, one of Libya’s three rival governments has announced cutting diplomatic relations with Qatar, after four Arab countries severed ties. Mohammed al-Deri, the Libyan foreign minister of the interim Libyan government, accused Qatar of “harboring terrorism” according to a Libyan official agency LANA. The Interim government is affiliated with the internationally recognized House of Representatives and is based in eastern Libya. Continued to page 6
