All-stars face off with global upstarts at Berlin film fest

Blanchett. Jan Schulz-Ojala, chief critic for Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel -- who has been covering the festival for two decades -- said that anticipation was also building for a director’s cut of Danish provocateur Lars von Trier’s new sex epic “Nymphomaniac Volume I” starring Charlotte Gainsbourg. “It is 30-35 minutes longer than the version already running in Denmark and other places and so it’s of very special interest for cinephiles,” he told AFP. “What was cut out of the cinema version -- is it explosive or superfluous? I’m really curious.” However, he noted that von Trier was not expected to appear in public in Berlin following a disastrous stop in 2011 at the Cannes film festival where

previous stance on “miming” has been to not do it, ever. The last time they even attempted it was in the late 1980s, he added, and they were booted from a U.K. television appearance because they weren’t pantomiming properly. “So, when this Super Bowl gig concept came up, there was a lot of confusion amongst us as whether or not we should do it, but we eventually decided, it was a surreal-like, once in a life time crazy thing to do and we would just have fun and do it,” Flea continued. “We had given this a lot of thought before agreeing to do it, and besides many a long conversation amongst ourselves, I spoke with many musician friends for whom I have the utmost respect, and they all said they would do it if asked, that it was a wild trippy thing to do, what the hell.” Plus, the L.A.-based rocker added, the Chili Peppers love them some football and they ultimately didn’t want to turn down the singular chance to ply their trade in front of millions of people. “We decided that, with Anthony [Kiedis] singing live, that we could still bring the spirit and freedom of what we

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea Admits Played Air Bass During Super Bowl

Flea may have kept his pants on when the Red Hot Chili Peppers were onstage during the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show, but he did noticeably leave his cord hanging. After getting called out for more or less playing air bass on Sunday, the veteran musician took to his blog today to explain why he didn’t plug in for the band’s performance at MetLife Stadium. “When we were asked by the NFL and [headliner Bruno Mars] to play our song ‘Give It Away’ at the Super Bowl, it was made clear to us that the vocals would be live, but the bass, drums, and guitar would be pre-recorded,” Flea wrote in a post on the Chili Peppers’ website. “I understand the NFL’s stance on this, given they only have a few minutes to set up the stage, there a zillion things that could go wrong and ruin the sound for the folks watching in the stadium and the t.v. viewers. There was not any room for argument on this, the NFL does not want to risk their show being botched by bad sound, period.” The NFL and Fox did, however, allow this year’s halftime performers to show all the nipple they wanted. Flea acknowledged that the band’s

New movies from Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater will go headto-head with upstarts from Europe, China and Latin America for the Golden Bear top prize at the Berlin film festival starting Thursday. The 64th Berlinale, as the 11-day event is known, marks the first major European festival of the year and serves as a launchpad for Hollywood fare and risk-taking independent movies from around the world. US producer James Schamus (“Brokeback Mountain”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) will lead a jury including double-Oscar-winning Austrian actor Christoph Waltz, Hong Kong star Tony Leung and French filmmaker Michel Gondry awarding the main prizes among 20 contenders on February 15. The sprawling festival will screen more than 400 films in cinemas across the snowy German capital, and many of the hottest tickets are for movies outside the main competition. George Clooney is due in town to present “The Monuments Men”, about a team of art experts who fought to protect precious artworks from the Nazis during World War II. do into the performance, and of course we played every note in the recording specially for the gig. I met and spoke with Bruno, who was a beautiful dude, a real talented musician, and we worked out something that seemed like it would be fun,” Flea wrote. But why didn’t he at least plug in his bass? The move to let his cord hang out obviously set him up for criticism. “For the actual performance, Josh [Klinghoffer], Chad [Smith], and I were playing along with the pre recorded track so there was no need to plug in our guitars, so we did not,” he explained. “Could we have plugged them in and avoided bumming people out who have expressed disappointment that the instrumental track was pre recorded? Of course easily we could have and this would be a non-issue. We thought it better to not pretend. It seemed like the realest thing to do in the circumstance. It was like making a music video in front of a gazillion people, except with live vocals, and only one chance to rock it. Our only thought was to bring the spirit of who we are to the people.”

Moratorium issues

Governor urged to keep his promise Bali Post

DENPASAR - A spatial observer, I Nyoman Gelebet, called governor not serious about moratorium of tourism accomodation. Because the moratorium policy was never complied with so far. As a result, the desire to temporarily stop the tourist accommodation development could never be materialized. Until now, the government is still issuing permits for that purpose. Benoa Bay reclamation plan is one of the examples. “Governor breaks the promise. He issues a moratorium but he wants the reclamation that will clearly has tourist accommodation and so does the Grand Forest Park (Tahura), everything is messy. In the past, the leaders still wanted to listen to, although not all of them. Today, they are unruly,” he said in Denpasar. Gelebet also called the governor was too much cheated by the investors as well as those who claimed themselves an expert. Based on the results of his study with some international experts in 1994, it was found that Benoa Bay would be useless for tourist attraction without cruise ships. However, the cruise ship dock could not be realized there due to a hole at Benoa Bay resembling the Bermuda Triangle. Gelebet said there were a lot of boats and speedboats missing in the hole when the tide was low.

“Then, it is also supported by local haunted nature. Well, this one is difficult to explain scientifically. Each year, there are definitely people drowned at the location. If they are not missing, at least they are sucked and submerged. If it is only intended for tourist attraction without cruise ship, it will be useless. This can be abused as the current plan wishing to do massive reclamation for building residential homes, hotel and golf course,” he explained. This man from Bualu, Mumbul, South Kuta, Badung, accused the tourism businesspeople in Southern Bali of being unable to be longer directed. As a result, the tourism development turned uncontrollable and even infringed the spatial planning. He observed there were hundreds of violated and unlicensed buildings. “All areas have the (tourism) master plan based on the study made by SCETO. Bukit and Kuta area also have it. In

2000, I also made the master plan for Pecatu village. If it can be realized there is no problem. The difficulty faced is the people there are not willing to be regulated. Actually, when referring to the master plan, the chaotic construction could be enhanced further,” he explained. In line with Gelebet, Chairman of the Regional Council of Friends of the Earth (Walhi) Bali, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana also stated that tourism development often disobeyed the areas having been defined, including the carrying capacity of Bali. It could be seen from the emergence of the discourse of the Governor of Bali who would review the moratorium on the construction of tourist accommodation. Actually, the moratorium should become a reference to restore the position of tourism industry in Bali. “By temporarily discontinuing (the moratorium—Ed) first, it can be resumed with a study to measure the environmental capacity of Bali, but it was not undertaken. It continues to be violated and lately emerges a discourse if it will be revoked and reviewed. In other words, it has not been implemented yet, but has been reviewed,” he criticized.
