‘Ralph’ beats the ‘Grinch’ to stay atop North American box office LOS ANGELES - Disney animation “Ralph Breaks the Internet” held the top spot in North American theaters for a second straight weekend, taking in an estimated $25.8 million, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday. The sequel to 2012’s “Wreck It Ralph” sees the title character (voiced by John C. Reilly) and friend Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) venture into the weird world of the internet, with predictably screwy results. “The Grinch,” Universal’s family-friendly feature about the notso-friendly green creature from Dr. Seuss’s manic menagerie, placed second, with $17.7 million for the three-day weekend and a cumulative domestic total of $203.5 million. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the irritable title character.

In third was MGM’s boxing drama “Creed II,” with a take of $16.8 million. This latest in the “Rocky” series stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed as he takes on the son of the boxer who killed his father. Sylvester Stallone, of course, plays aging ex-champ Rocky Balboa, now a restaurant owner and Adonis’s mentor. Holding in fourth place was “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” from Warner Bros., at $11.2 million, pushing its worldwide total past $500 million. The Harry Potter prequel stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander; also starring are Jude Law and Johnny Depp. Placing fifth, and in its fifth week out, was Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” with $8.1 million. The concert was the climax of a year of events celebrating the centennial of Mandela’s birth in 1918, and part of a campaign to tackle poverty, child malnutrition and boost gender equality. This year’s Global Citizen Festival was held at Johannesburg’s 94,736-capacity FNB staium and saw Beyonce perform several of her hits as well as a duet with Sheeran. Thousands of music fans, many of whom had received free tickets to reward their activism and

campaigning work, flocked to the stadium hours before the concert began. “I’m proud to be part of the global citizen movement because they are trying to make a positive impact on people’s lives -- especially women’s and children’s issues,” said Nokthula Khuzwayo, 23, from Soweto. “I loved Dbanj’s performance and of course Queen B and Jay-Z, even though it was a brief one.” As well as a constellation of

global stars that also included Pharrell Williams and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted fellow heads of state from Ghana, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. “We are here to act in one voice,” said Ramaphosa. Beyonce’s performance of her smash hit XO, during which she wore a flowing pink-red dress and paid tribute to Mandela, drew an outpouring of emotion from the crowd. (afp)

Real Madrid’s Croatian midfielder Luka Modric brandishes the trophy after receiving the 2018 FIFA Men’s Ballon d’Or award for best player of the year during the 2018 FIFA Ballon d’Or award ceremony at the Grand Palais in Paris on December 3, 2018. The winner of the 2018 Ballon d’Or will be revealed at a glittering ceremony in Paris on December 3 evening, with Croatia’s Luka Modric and a host of French World Cup winners all hoping to finally end the 10-year duopoly of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Modric sees off French stars to end Messi, Ronaldo grip on Ballon d’Or Luka Modric saw off competition from a host of French World Cup stars as the Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder won the 2018 Ballon d’Or on Monday, ending the 10-year stranglehold on the award by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Modric, 33, was announced as the winner of the prestigious prize in a glitzy ceremony held in Paris. Ronaldo was second, with France and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann completing the podium. Paris Saint-Germain’s teenage forward Kylian Mbappe came fourth, leaving Messi to settle for fifth position. Another Frenchman, Modric’s Madrid teammate Raphael Varane, was seventh, just behind Liverpool’s Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah. “As a kid we all have dreams. My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies,” Modric said. “The Ballon d’Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honour and a privilege

to hold this trophy.” Mbappe, who does not turn 20 until later this month, picked up the consolation prize of the Kopa Trophy for the best young player. The gala ceremony also saw a women’s Ballon d’Or named for the first time, with Lyon’s prolific Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg taking that award. Modric -- the oldest winner since Italy’s Fabio Cannavaro, also 33, in 2006 -- was crowned after an outstanding year in which he starred in the Real side that retained the Champions League before heroically helping drag his country to the final of the World Cup for the first time in their history. Croatia lost 4-2 to France in Moscow in the final in July.

The prize comes after Modric claimed the Golden Ball for the best player at the World Cup before picking up UEFA’s prize for player of the season and FIFA’s best player award in September. Ronaldo and Messi were among 30 nominees for the Ballon d’Or, organised by France Football magazine and which takes votes from 180 journalists from around the world. Continued to page 6
