An Indonesian diver died while recovering body parts from the ill-fated Lion Air plane which crashed into the sea killing 189 people, an official said on November 3.

MADRID - With six nominations, US singer Camila Cabello, whose hit song “Havana” reached the top of the US charts in January, is in prime position for the MTV Europe Music Awards held Sunday in Spain.

Best song, best video, best artist... The 21-year-old Cuba-born singer is riding high, fresh from winning prestigious prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards in August -- artist of the year and video of the year.

Her album “Camila” also reached the top of US charts in January, and the audio version of “Havana”, which features rapper Young Thug, has had more than 1.3 billion hits on YouTube.

Last year the former member of the band Fifth Harmony was also named best pop artist at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA).

Next up at the awards in the northern Spanish city of Bilbao are singer Ariana Grande and rapper Post Malone with five nominations, followed by Canadian artist Drake and Britain’s Dua Lipa with four.

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, winner of three prizes in 2017, was nominated for three awards this year.

Cabello’s “Havana”, Grande’s “No tears left to cry”, Post Malone’s “Rockstar”, Drake’s “God’s Plan” and Bebe Rexha’s “Meant to be” are all competing for best song.

French DJ David Guetta, up for best electronic artist, and Nicki Minaj, competing in the hip hop category, will perform at the show which starts at 9 pm (2000 GMT).

US actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld will host.

Bebe Rexha, Jason Derulo, Rosalia, Panic! at the Disco are also set to perform.

Paltrow posted a picture from the big day showing the newlyweds walking down the aisle, with the words “for those who have requested, a little look inside the best day of our lives. #thefaltrows”.

The 46-year-old US actress wore a custom lace Valentino Couture gown for the occasion while the men donned Tom Ford suits.

Indonesia finds ‘minor’ faults in two other 737-MAX jets after crash

Indonesia’s transport ministry said it had found “minor” faults in two other Boeing 737-MAX 8 jets, including a cockpit indicator display problem which an analyst said may be similar to one reported in the crashed Lion Air Jet. The ministry is inspecting 10 of the newly released jets owned by Lion and flagship carrier Garuda, as authorities analyse data from a recovered black box that may help explain why flight JT 610 plummeted into the Java Sea, killing 189 people on Monday.

Few details were released, but the ministry said it had looked over half a dozen jets so far and discovered that one had a problem linked to its cockpit display while another had a glitch in a jet stabilisation system. Both Lion-owned planes required new components, it said.

Aviation analyst Dudi Sudibyo said the cockpit display issue

could include a speed-and-altitude glitch reported in the doomed jet.

“With airplanes, even if there is a single, tiny fault it should not fly,” he added.

Stephen Wright, an aviation expert at the University of Leeds, told AFP that the faults identified by the transport ministry were “very minor.” He added that any problems with the new jet’s pitot-static system -- which determines speed and altitude among other measurements -- will be key to the probe.

The inspection comes as questions swirl about why a plane that had gone into service just months ago crashed into the sea minutes

after takeoff. The single-aisle jet, en route from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city, is one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes.

Budget carrier Lion Air’s admission that the doomed jet had a technical issue on a previous flight -- as well its abrupt fatal dive -- have raised questions about whether it had mechanical faults specific to the new model.

Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee said it was interviewing people who flew on the plane the day before the fatal crash. Some have reported a frightening, erratic trip, an assertion that

appears to be backed up by flight tracking data.

- Totally destroyed Earlier Friday, seats, wheels and other parts of the crashed jet were hauled from the depths off Indonesia’s north coast as search teams scoured the seabed for the fuselage.

“There is a lot of little debris, plane wheels, and seats -- all totally destroyed and in pieces,” said Isswarto, commander of the Indonesian navy’s search-and-rescue division.

Divers were searching a relatively shallow area about 25-35 metres deep, but have been finding fewer body parts than earlier in the week, he added. “They’re scattered everywhere and some may have been washed away by the current.”

On Thursday, one of the plane’s black boxes was recovered, and authorities are hunting for the second one.

The black box could offer investigators their best chance of discovering why the jet crashed.

The devices help explain nearly 90 percent of all crashes, according to aviation experts.

Surprising, deflation even occurs while on IMF-WB event DENPASAR - Based on the results of price monitoring in October 2018, there was a deflation of 0.09 percent. In Denpasar City, the deflation was recorded to reach 0.10 percent with the consumer price index (CPI) of 130.05.

Of the seven existing expenditure groups, t h e food-

stuff group contributed the most to deflation namely as much as 0.1733 percent. More specifically, the commodity with the largest deflation was contributed by broiler meat namely at 0.1335 percent.

Head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, stated that deflation in October 2018 was contributed by foodstuff at 0.87 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel at 0.14 percent and health group at 0 . 9 3 per-

cent.

Meanwhile, the group experiencing inflation included the clothing group at 0.73 percent, transportation, communication and financial services group (0.52 percent), processed food group, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco (0.14 percent) and education, recreation and sports group (0.06 percent).

Allegedly this deflation happened due to a decrease in purchasing power. However, Adi was not able to ascertain the cause of deflation due to a decrease in purchasing power or indeed a decline in prices. “It

needs further research. By using the illustration of inflation in other groups such as the core group and so on, it suggests that apparently the purchasing power may be not in trouble,” he said.

So, the deflation occurred in certain commodities like chicken meat and even rice in Denpasar merely constituted the interaction between demand and supply. When the supply is sufficient, the price drops.

Deputy Director of Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office, Azka Subhan, expressed his astonishment at the Bali’s consumer price index. Theoretically, the arrival of many participants of the IMF-WB Annual Meeting reaching around 40,000 should cause the demand to increase so the prices can rise. However, the opposite thing happened in October 2018, namely deflation. Azka predicted there will be inflation but not too high, but in fact it was deflation.

Previously, in the meeting of the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID), there was concern about inflation during the Eid, the IMF-WB Meeting, Christmas, New Year and Galungan. “That’s the vulnerable points of our inflation. Thankfully, deflation even occurred last October. Actually, there was an IMF-WB Meeting last October where many people came to Bali, but it even resulted in deflation,” he affirmed on Friday (Nov. 2).

Having been traced, price increases did not occur because all the participants had booked hotels two or one year ago. Thus, it did not disturb the room rate of hotels in October 2018. In terms of flight, tens of thousands of people were feared from entering Bali in the same month and will cause ticket prices to rise. But apparently, participants had booked tickets a year or six months before. In terms of food, many hotels have also prepared it well in advance. As a result, the price of food was under control.

“Hotels may have prepared bread, rice as well as the other needs of both domestic and foreign delegates far in advance. So, the preparation has been made ahead of time,” he explained.

Even if there was an alleged decline in purchasing power becoming the cause of deflation, more demand even came from international community and the IMFWB participants, so the purchasing power is impossible to have been the cause. (kmb42)

Contract signing of shortcut 5-6 to be held next week DENPASAR - The signing of the contract related to the tender process for the shortcut 5-6 of the Mengwitani-Singaraja road section will be done immediately.

Furthermore, the development of the shortcuts budgeted for more than IDR 165 billion from this state budget is targeted to have completed in 2019.

“It just needs to complete a little more administration and the contract can have been signed next week. In other words, this project is worked on in multi years, and we schedule it can be completed at the end of 2019,” said the Head of the National Road Authority (BBPJN) for Region VIII, Ketut Darmawahana, in Denpasar on

Thursday (Nov. 1).

According to Darmawahana, there are 10 shortcut points that will be worked on along the Mengwitani-Singaraja road section. After the shortcut 5-6, the governor of Bali hoped the development of shortcut 3-4 can be driven in 2019.

The Bali provincial government has even committed to completing

the land acquisition of shortcut 3-4 in the Bedugul area.

“There are crucial points in Bedugul as it has tourist routes to the botanical garden, and many other things. There are four intersections frequently resulting in congestion. We have the concept of creating a shortcut around the lake. Approximately, it will re-

quire funding of IDR 170 billion,” he explained.

Darmawahana added that after the shortcut 5-6 and 3-4 are built, the next priority is shortcut 1-2, 7-8, and 9-10. The design is now being prepared. Overall, the ten shortcut points require a budget of IDR 1.4 trillion for the construction and land acquisition. (kmb32)

Hiking from Tateyama across the Northern Japan Alps

TATEYAMA is a small town on the edge of the Japanese Northern Alps and makes a great base to explore the mountains. It’s already on the map as the starting point for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route – a journey which involves cable car, bus and ropeway. These were originally built to provide supplies for the Kurobe Dam but now are for tourists.

Unfortunately there’s no hiking involved, but there’s a much older route for pilgrims travelling on foot.

From the 17th to the 19th centuries, Mt. Tateyama was designated as one of Japan’s three holy mountains along with Mt. Fuji and Mt. Hakusan.

It helped, of course, that are plenty of hot springs and sulphurous fumes coming out of the ground in the area.

Mount Tateyama

Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, at the foot of the mountain, is the centre of all this activity. Pilgrims, arriving here, imagined the hot springs were the gateway to the underworld and of course the stink of sulphur helped.

Since you had to walk through here to get to the summit of Mt. Tateyama, the pilgrimage symbolically represented a journey from hell to heaven. At the top, a Shinto shrine was built, where pilgrims would receive a blessing from the monks, and see it as a free ticket to the afterlife.

I visited the region last year for the Nunobashi Kanjoe Festival and am familiar with the sacred mountain but I want to explore further.

There’s a horseshoe walk starting and ending in Tateyama, taking 3-4 days, passing the Shomyo Falls, the

tallest waterfall in Japan. Unfortunately, I’m slightly pressed for time so take a cable car from Tateyama station up to Bijodaira, saving a few hours of hiking. In Japan trails are well marked and maintained and I have no problem finding my way.

From Midagahara the boarded pathway takes me across wetlands before plunging down to a stream.

From here it’s a steep climb up, but chains are provided to prevent sliding down the slope. It’s also extremely windy, a result of the passing typhoon, but I make it to the Tateyama Murodo hut at 2450m by early afternoon. The building is modern, but next to it is a wooden structure, erected around 300 years ago, the oldest mountain hut in Japan.

I’m now close to Hell Valley, and the threat from the sulphurous fumes is enough to warrant toxicity warnings on the hut’s notice board.

Just nearby is the Mikurigaike Crater Lake, whose cobalt blue stillness mirrors a beautiful image of the sacred mountain. In former times, the water in the lake, known as “a kitchen pond for god” was used to cook food offerings for the mountain gods.

Next morning I’m up at dawn, partly because I want to avoid an entire army of children who are on a school trip to the shrine at the top of the mountain. Even though it’s late July, patchy snowfields make the going tricky although there’s a paved path up to the half way stage.

After this, it’s a craggy stiff scramble to the summit. It’s so clear that I can make out the iconic shape of

Mount Fuji, two hundred miles away.

The legend of Oyama

In front of me is the shrine of Oyama where legend says that an 8th century hunter pursued a wounded bear only to see it transform into a golden Buddha. The hunter became a priest so he could look after this sacred place and monks still live here, offering a blessing and a taste of sake to those who come to pray.

Tateyama actually has three summits, connected by a long ridge. The highest, Mt. Onanji, at 3015m, is just beyond the temple, and there’s a definite sense of achievement as I take in the wonderful views. Of course you’re never alone in Japan and the summit is no exception.

My fellow Japanese hikers are all wearing the latest outdoor gear, definitely overdressed in the heat.

Of course everyone carries a small towel, obligatory to wipe the sweat off their brows. What I like about hiking here is that everyone is so polite, stopping to let you pass and always saying hello.

I follow the stony ridge climbing Mt. Masago, 2861m, and Mt. Bessan, 2399m, before descending to the Tsurugigozen mountain hut. I can see the turquoise crater lake and fumes rising from Jigokudani far down below.

From here I could carry on all the way back to Tateyama but time is too short. Instead I follow a twisting path which descends to the Rachiozawa campsite, on the banks of the river in Murodo. (IBP/net)

Needs of world herbal medicine predicted to reach USD 50 billion

DENPASAR — The needs of the world community for traditional medicine, known as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), are estimated to increase. WHO predicted the need for world herbal medicines reaches around USD 50 billion in 2050. This is an opportunity for Indonesia, especially Bali, as an international tourist destination to participate in getting dollars from the health sector through CAM and herbal medicines.

“According to the WHO, in 2050 the world needs for herbal medicines worth USD 50 billion.

If we think of domestic income, we cannot. We want the income coming from outside,” said a lecturer at Pharmacy Department of Udayana University, I Made Agus Gelgel Wirasuta, in Denpasar on Friday (Nov. 2).

According to Gelgel, there are many private companies pursuing herbal medicines in Bali and owned by foreigners. The company has a tremendous market shares and it even becomes the world’s top market. One of them is a cosmetics company in Karangasem.

“My alumnus works in the company. It has big market share and ranked third in Canada. It is in Bali, why don’t we hold it?” added the man who is a forensic toxicologist having written a lot of research on the standardization of herbal medicine.

If Bali can meet the market for herbal medicines or traditional medicines, Gelgel continued, Bali will not be shortage of raw materials. People will definitely cultivate medicinal plants when they have good prices. Moreover, the Ministry of Health is ready to support the post-harvest processing industry for medicinal plants.

So far, this potential has not been worked out properly.

“Actually, the market shares are large, the demands are large and so is the potential. Economically, Bali will not focus on tourism alone. There is an industry we build, but does not disturb tourism,” he explained.

As previously reported, Bali is now developing traditional medicine as one of the priority programs in the health sector.

Moreover, this Island of the Gods has a lot of literature in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts and other documents related to usadha or healing. The policy to be covered by the regulation is primarily mean to protect and

explore the benefits of Balinese local wisdom in an effort to realize public health.

Head of the Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, stated that herbal medicine is relatively safe and without side effects. After getting a diagnosis from a doctor, patients can choose treatment with herbal or chemical drugs.

“Doctors certainly know how the combination is,” he said.

According to Suarjaya, there has been a concept for the development of traditional medicine starting from public health center. Moreover, his agency has even trained quite large number of traditional health workers. A number of doctors, nurses and midwives have been specially trained in acupressure, potions and acupuncture. So far, there are many doctors pursuing acupuncture.

“On that account, it becomes a choice. For example, if patients want to be treated with acupuncture treatment, well… they will get it while if wishing a chemical drug, they will be given as requested. So, this is an option,” he explained. (kmb32)

Bali parliament recommends re-organizing Bali tourism

DENPASAR — The Bali House of Representatives finally invited tourism stakeholders, immigration office and representatives of Chinese network shops to the parliamentary building on Wednesday (Oct. 31). The meeting discussed about the issues of tourism in Bali, especially the violating and unhealthy business practices. This meeting was also attended by the Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, and the related agencies.

Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, conveyed the three points of the meeting’s conclusion immediately set forth into the recommendations of the House. He invited all parties having responsibility for maintaining the continuity of tourism in Bali, the executive especially the governor is recommended to enforce the rules firmly, and jointly reorganize tourism in Bali as a whole.

“In the future, seeing the condition has been messed up like this, we have to sit together and reorganize this tourism. I see the tour guides, travel agencies and restaurants are not going hand in hand. Every party wants to do their own will. We have been messed up like this, but no one is responsible,” he said.

In the meeting, a member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, stated the reports related to cheap tourism had actually entered the parliament since 2-3 years ago.

The reports include the cheap tours from China to Bali at the price of IDR 600,000 for 5 days has been at issue within the past few weeks. Bali was even labeled as a cheating country by Chinese tourists. The solution is only law enforcement,” said this PDI-P politician.

According to Adhi Ardhana, cheap tourism sponsored by Chinese shop networks has the potential to violate a number of rules. They are the law on business competition, the labor law, the money laundering law, the foreign investment law, and the Bali Regional Regulation on Tour Guides and Regional Regulations on Tourism Travel Services.

“We firmly hope that law enforcers and law enforcement agencies can take action. In other words, they should not only be raided but also investigated.

Having been investigated, if proven, send them to court,” he explained.

Secretary of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, I Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said that controlling the shops of the Chinese mafia network amounting to 28 shops should not be a difficult job.

Kariyasa asserted that it is necessary to investigate thoroughly whoever gets involved in this matter. The investigation must include the permits, clarity of goods on sale, sales tax, foreign labor issues to the use of Garuda state symbol for the stamps. Bali develops traditional medicine

Sacked Sri Lankan PM’s residence becomes symbol of power struggle

Balinese healing based on palm-manuscript to be applied

DENPASAR - Bali is now developing traditional medicine as one of the priority programs in the health sector. Moreover, the Island of the Gods has a lot of literature in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts and other documents related to usadha (traditional healing). The policy that will be covered with legal instrument is primarily meant to protect and explore the benefits of Balinese local wisdom in an effort to realize public health.

“In practice, this has been going on for a long time until these days in Bali. In the past, it was very popular, but today amid the modernization of medical science, such tradition has been left behind so that it has diminished,” said Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, in a press conference at the Sabha Praja, Bali Governor’s Office, on Friday (Nov. 2).

Actually, continued Koster, the tendency of the people’s way of life in the future will be back to nature not only Balinese, but also international community. Therefore, traditional medical facilities must be prepared from now on. It starts with the setting up of a special area to plant herbal plants. Balinese people call it the Taru Pramana, namely the plants specifically cultivated for traditional medicine. Today, some of the plants are still available and rare, while some others are extinct.

“If it is localized in one area, people in need can easily get there. They will be no longer dizzy to look for,” he explained.

Koster added the special area named the Usadha Park will be built in Bangli district. The construc-

tion will be begun in 2019 on three hectares of land owned by the Bali government. From the Usadha Park, the herbal medicine raw material industry can then be developed. For example, the post-harvest collection center for medicinal plants, herbal extract industry or the home industry developing herbal medicines such as loloh (herbal drink), massage, tutuh (nose drop) and others.

The Ministry of Health is even stated to be disbursing funds for the development of this industry in Bangli. Another development, of course, is the construction of traditional health facilities, namely the Griya Sehat or a kind of health clinic.

In accordance with Regulation of Minister of Health No.15/2018, this traditional health service center seeks traditional health services borne by the BPJS. “We will establish it at Hindu University of Indonesia and in several other places to make it pilot project for traditional health services.

Actually, this already exists but the capacity remains small. We will expand it with the regional budget fund,” he explained.

According to Koster, the health workers to be assigned to the Griya Sehat or Policlinic of Traditional Health Services integrated with hospital to the public health center must have special education or competency in medical treatment. The traditional health personnel education was initiated by the Hindu University of Indonesia, Denpasar. However, the Bali provincial government will also induce state and private universities to participate in developing traditional medical education. In this case, traditional health workers should not be careless.

“This education is meant to standardize the profession of traditional healers which have been better known by the community as Balian.

Standardized traditional healers will be recorded as a Registered Certificate by the Ministry of Health,” he explained.

Koster added that Bali could also be a pioneer in developing the Center for Standardization of Herbal Medicine laboratory that issues Certificate of Analysis for herbal medicine and cosmetic ingredients. This is an effort to provide raw materials for standardized herbal medicines with high economic value and competitiveness at the world level. In addition, universities in Bali such as Udayana University and Hindu University of Indonesia can also be pioneers in developing the Center for Usadhic and Herbal Medicine Research.

“This is very complete. There are

scientific references including the local wisdom. We now accommodate it through a laboratory, study center, the area of traditional medicinal plants.

After that, we develop the health and industry human resources. This is a new economic movement,” he concluded.

A lecturer at Pharmacy Department of the Udayana University, I Made Agus Gelgel Wirasuta, stated that Balinese healing (usadha) in the international world is called Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). NOUMEA - The French Pacific islands of New Caledonia were voting Sunday on whether to become an independent nation, in a closely-watched test of support for France in one of its many territories scattered around the globe.

Some 18,000 kilometres (11,000 miles) from the French mainland, New Caledonia is home to a quarter of the world’s known supplies of nickel -- a vital electronics component -- and is a strategic foothold for France in the Pacific.

Voting in New Caledonia’s 284 polling stations opened at 8:00 am Sunday (2100 GMT Saturday) and was to end at 6.00 pm, with results expected the same evening.

The participation rate was 73.68 percent at 5:00 pm, much higher than at the same time during local elections in 2014.

Some 175,000 people are eligible to vote in the remote islands fringed by spectacular beaches, with opinion polls predicting a large majority in favour of staying French.

But there are fears the referendum could inflame tensions between indigenous Kanak people,

who tend to favour independence, and the white population, which boiled over into deadly violence in the 1980s.

The quasi-civil war claimed more than 70 lives. It led to the 1998 Noumea Accord which paved the way for the steady devolution of powers as well as Sunday’s referendum.

Separatists have urged Kanak voters to choose self-determination for Kanaky, their name for New Caledonia, and throw off the shackles of “colonial” authorities in Paris.

“It’s a great day for us. My father, my grandfather fought for this country and today is the second fight in the ballot box,” said proindependence supporter Patrick Watrone on Sunday, dressed in the colours of Kanak flag.

“Today, us young Kanaks, we have no jobs. If we are the ones who manage the country, we will

have more opportunities,” said Fabrice Ude, 28.

But indigenous people make up less than 50 percent of the electorate and some Kanaks back staying part of France, not least due to the 1.3 billion euros ($1.5 billion) the French state hands to the islands every year.

Going it alone, “I’m not sure we have all the assets we’d need to succeed,” said Marc Gnipate, a 62-year-old pensioner.

Michaele Mikena, 61, also “voted no. I’m not afraid of independence, but I am attached to France, I owe it a lot”.

Polls suggest 63 to 75 percent of voters will opt against breaking away from France, which claimed the islands in 1853 and once used them as a penal colony.

COLOMB0 - The banquet hall at Sri Lanka’s ousted prime minister’s official residence is packed with supporters -- many sleeping on chairs and the floor -- who have come to stand guard as he tussles for power with an old rival.

Thousands of loyalists from across the country are camped out at the Temple Trees residence in Colombo, a colonial-era bungalow where Ranil Wickremesinghe has been holed up since his shock dismissal more than a week ago.

Day and night they top up coconut oil lamps and keep jasmineperfumed incense sticks burning in the 5,000-capacity banquet hall -- usually reserved for state dinners and VIP weddings -- while the 69year-old plots his next move.

President Maithripala Sirisena sacked Wickremesinghe on October 26 but he has refused to accept the decision or to leave the residence so former strongman leader Mahinda Rajapakse -- who was named in his place -- can move in.

S.M. Faheed, a 73-year-old diehard supporter of Wickremesinghe’s United National Party (UNP), vowed to stay there until the constitutional crisis is resolved.

“I will not leave until Ranil is given the PM’s chair,” Faheed said.

“We are here to support him and make sure no one tries to throw him out of Temple Trees.”

“If I have to, I will stay here till I die.”

Wickremesinghe has asked lawmakers to vote to decide between him and Rajapakse and end the crisis, but parliament has been suspended since his sacking.

“If I win... (Rajapakse) must stand down. If he wins, I will

leave Temple Trees and move away,” Wickremesinghe told AFP on Friday.

But he will have trouble convincing his followers to give way.

- Prayers for victory Shakuntala Devi travelled 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the Tamil city of Jaffna in the north of the country to join the crowd that grows each day.

Volunteers bring meals to Devi and others while Buddhist monks chant prayers that are broadcast on a public address system within the premises.

Devi said she wanted to show solidarity after Wickremesinghe’s government built 5,000 homes for people like her who were displaced by the civil war that ended in 2009.

“I came to show my gratitude to the prime minister,” she said.

Another protester who gave her name as Sandya said: “We want to tell Sirisena: If you have any shame, call parliament and let our leader take back his seat.”

Others in the huge crowd echoed her views, with one person saying Sri Lanka had “become the laughing stock of the world”.

“Sirisena is the most ungrateful man. May he be cursed and be struck by lightning,” said Jayanthi Jayewardena, an elderly supporter.

Sirisena won the presidency from Rajapakse in 2015 with the help of Wickremesinghe and his UNP. The two formed a coalition, but have since fallen out badly.

So, the order of the shell is made if there are already craft orders,” she added.

Habitually, the keben crafts are ordered on average of 30 pieces. To accomplish the order, she should engage six craftsmen where one craftsman can produce two pieces of keben basket each day.

The price offered for this shell-decorated craft varies based on the complexity of the design and the variety of sea shells in use. On average, the price is between IDR 200,000 and IDR 300,000. Other than fulfilling the demand of buyers in Bali, this shell-decorated handicraft also draws the interest of consumers from outside Bali. “Some buyers from Sulawesi also order my craft products,” concluded Suryani. Becky Frankiewicz, president of staffing firm ManpowerGroup North America, said companies are trying a variety of strategies to fill jobs. Many retailers are removing the label “seasonal” from their job postings and looking for permanent workers instead.

Others are dropping their requirements for a college degree.

“We absolutely see employers getting more and more creative about ways to get people in,” Frankiewicz said.

By some measures, consumers are the most confident they have been in 18 years, and their spending is propelling brisk economic growth. The economic expansion is now the second-longest on record, and October marked the 97th straight month of hiring, a record streak.

Strength in their customer demand has been a key factor leading companies to steadily add workers. Though economists have predicted that hiring will eventually slow as the pool of unemployed Americans dwindles, there’s no sign of that happening yet.

Still, the latest month of healthy job growth might not tip many votes in the

midterm elections. Polls have suggested that while Americans generally approve of the economy’s performance, that sentiment hasn’t necessarily broadened support for President Donald Trump or for Republican congressional candidates.

The strong job growth and bigger pay increases will likely encourage the Federal Reserve to keep raising short-term interest rates. Most analysts expect the Fed to resume its rate hikes in December.

Hurricane Michael, which slammed into the Florida Panhandle and southern Georgia last month, had no discernible effect on the jobs data, the government said. Still, October’s outsize gain might have reflected, in part, a rebound from September, when Hurricane Florence depressed job growth.

Hiring in October was strong in higherand middle-income jobs. Professional and business services, which include engineers, architects and accountants, gained 35,000 jobs. Manufacturers added 32,000 after two months of smaller gains, defying fears that Trump’s trade fights would slow hiring in that sector. Construction companies added 30,000 positions.

Retailers barely hired, adding just 2,400

positions, possibly reflecting the Sears bankruptcy. Restaurants and hotels gained 33,000, most of them lower-paying.

In the July-September quarter, consumer spending grew by the most in four years and helped the economy expand at a 3.5 percent annual rate. That growth followed a 4.2 percent annual pace in the April-June quarter.

Combined, the two quarters produced the strongest six-month stretch of growth in four years.

Housing remains a weak spot in the economy, with sales of existing homes having fallen for six straight months as mortgage rates have risen to nearly 5 percent. But slower sales have started to limit home price increases, which had been running at more than twice the pace of wage gains.

Although pay increases can help boost spending and propel the economy’s growth, they can also lead companies to raise prices to cover their higher labor costs. That trend, in turn, can accelerate inflation.

So far, though, inflation remains in check.

WASHINGTON - U.S. businesses ramped up hiring in October, and wages rose by the largest year-overyear amount in nearly a decade, a combination that is pulling a rising share of Americans into the job market.

In the final major economic report before Tuesday’s congressional elections, the government said Friday that U.S. employers added a robust 250,000 jobs in October. The unemployment rate stayed at a five-decade low of 3.7 percent.

Healthy economic growth is spurring employers to hire at a rapid pace that shows no sign of flagging even with the economy in its 10th year of expansion.

With the supply of unemployed dwindling, companies appear to be finally putting up generous enough pay raises to attract and retain employees.

Average hourly wages rose 3.1 percent in October from a year earlier, the fastest annual gain since 2009.

Still, inflation has picked up a bit in the past year as well, eating away at some of those pay raises. And the increase in wages last month also partly reflected a one-time drop in pay a year ago because of Hurricane Harvey.

Even so, October’s increase suggests that after a decade of anemic growth, wage growth is picking up. At the same time, an influx of new job-seekers increased the proportion of Americans with jobs to its highest level since 2009.

The economy has now added jobs for 97 straight months, a record. That steady hiring has helped reduce the unemployment rate for Latinos to 4.4 percent, a record low.

Teenage unemployment dropped last month to 11.9 percent, the lowest since 1969. And the proportion of Americans without a high school degree who are working has reached the highest point on records dating from 1992.

“It doesn’t get any better than this,” said Sun Wong Sohn, chief economist at SS Economics. “Evidently, the word has spread that there are good jobs to be had at decent wages.”

Cheyenne Mauzy of Springfield, Missouri, had held out for higher pay when she started job hunting in June. She felt she needed a high enough hourly wage to make up for the cost of child care for her three children.

“There was a minimum we had to make,” Mauzy, 28, said, referring to calculations she made with her husband. “I had to bring home enough on top of child care. If I am just going to work to pay for our child care, I should be our child care.”

Some of Bali’s best female painters exhibit at Denpasar Art Center

As most people know, there are a staggering number of talented painters in Bali, including many women who paint in a variety of styles. For a variety of reasons, female painters do not tend to exhibit their works as often as their male counterparts.

In order to encourage the likelihood of having their works seen by the art-loving public, several female painters have coalesced into the Perupa Perempuan Bali (Bali Women Artists). The PPB as they are known hold regular exhibitions and while each member has their own unique style and approach to art, they share a passion for making art which is clearly seen in their works.

Sutriatini explains: “there are no boundaries of age or gender when it comes to painting, our youngest member is 17 year old and all of us are dedicated to continuously developing our skills”.

Their latest exhibition entitles Vidya Diva draws attention to the light that women embody and all of the works of the exhibition speak to some aspect of womanhood.

While they often exhibition works on a range of themes this particular exhibition sheds light on their experience as female painters.

This is the second time that they hold a group exhibition at the Denpasar Art Center’s Gedung Kriya, known for hosting exceptionally high quality exhibitions. As Denpasar Art Center director of arts

programming Pak Gung Adiputra explained: “although the gallery itself can only house works of a certain size, there is a kind of pride in having exhibited here due to the history and charisma of the space itself. This is the second time that we invite this woman’s group to exhibit.

We want to provide as wide a space as possible to female artists who need a special kind of support”.

The exhibition in 2017 was a great success and was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and while such funding was not available this year, the Art Center was determined to hold the second of what they hope to make a regular yearly event partly because of the success of last year’s exhibition, partly because of the high quality of art produced by these

female painters and as Pak Adiputra explained also to shed light on the powerful role that women play as human beings. “In reference to the Mahabarata, in which all of the gods get their power from their female partners, we came up with the title Vidiya Diva” which means divine light. We changed Deva to Diva to make it more contemporary”, he said with a smile.

After being asked if they painted as a hobby or if they were actually professional painters, exhibition curator responded by saying: “they come from a variety of backgrounds , maybe we can hear from each of the artists themselves to get a clearer picture”. This was followed by each of the 18 women participating in the exhibition giv-

ing brief, humble and remarkably impressive descriptions of their experience and background as artists.

Ranging from international acclaim to technically innovation, deeply spiritual and just about everything in between, they left no doubt that they not only represent the tremendous talent found amongst female artists in Bali but also that the power expressed in their works indeed represents Vidya Diva.

El Chapo in dock for biggest US drugs trial

NEW YORK - Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman goes on trial in New York on Monday, accused of running the world’s biggest drug cartel and spending a quarter of a century smuggling more than 155 tons of cocaine into the United States.

The mammoth trial in a Brooklyn federal court, which will cost millions of dollars and is expected to last more than four months, will see one of the world’s most notorious criminals face the US justice system.

Prosecutors spent years piecing together a sweeping case against Guzman, who was extradited in 2017 after twice escaping prison in Mexico -- first hidden in a laundry cart, then slipping down a tunnel that reached his prison shower.

Guzman has been branded the world’s biggest drug lord since Colombia’s Pablo Escobar, who was dubbed “The King of Cocaine” and was one of the wealthiest men in the world until police shot him dead in 1993.

Experts say the government has a near water-tight case likely to send Guzman, 61, to a maximum security US prison for the rest of his life. But at what price?

“Is it going to stop even one additional pound of cocaine from coming into the United States?

Probably not. The machine keeps rolling,” says Rob Heroy, a North Carolina lawyer who has defended other Mexican drug barons.

The Sinaloa cartel that Guzman founded in 1989 is still hugely powerful. His co-defendant Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada remains at large, and violent drug trafficking continues unabated in Mexico.

Last year, there was a record 29,000 murders in Mexico. In the United States, opioid addiction has spiraled into an epidemic. In 2016, an average of 174 Americans died every day from drug overdoses.

- ‘Most expensive trial in history’ -

Jury selection will be conducted in security conditions reserved only for the most dangerous defendants.

US District Court Judge Brian Cogan will preside over the process behind closed doors.

The 12 jurors, with six alternates, will remain anonymous. US Marshals will escort them to and from court every day.

These ordinary men and women will determine whether Guzman -the diminutive father of two whose nickname means “shorty” -- is guilty or not of 11 trafficking, firearms and money laundering charges.

According to the indictment,

the Sinaloa cartel, which Guzman is accused of leading from 1989 to 2014, became “the largest drug trafficking organization in the world... with thousands of members.”

US prosecutors contend that from 1989 to 2014, the cartel smuggled at least 340,892 pounds (154,626 kilograms) of cocaine into the United States, as well as heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana, raking in $14 billion.

Guzman pleads not guilty, but the government has presented so much evidence -- more than 300,000 pages and at least 117,000 audio recordings -- that the defense complains they haven’t had enough time to review it all.

Heroy estimates the trial will cost US taxpayer “more than $50 million,” a price tag that includes protection programs for at least some of the several hundred witnesses expected to testify.

“It’s probably set up to be the most expensive trial in the history of the US,” he told AFP. Even Guzman’s lawyers are in the dark as to all the former associates, hired hands or rivals who have turned informants. (afp)

TEHRAN - Seventy-year-old Heidar Fekri has been selling industrial equipment from his small store in a Tehran bazaar since before the revolution, but for the first time he is not sure he can survive.

He means it literally: “My shelves are empty, my warehouses are empty and soon I will have to close the doors. This has been my entire life -- I won’t survive long after the doors close.”

Iran’s economy had plenty of problems even before US President Donald Trump decided in May to abandon the 2015 nuclear deal and reimpose “crippling” sanctions.

But that move exacerbated a record drop in Iran’s currency, down 70 percent in the past year, and prompted an exodus of foreign firms.

Anticipation of the return of the oil embargo -- due to kick in on Monday -- has already plunged the country into recession and will see the economy shrink by 3.6 percent next year, says the International Monetary Fund.

For Fekri, who has been bringing in industrial pumps and drills from Europe for 47 years, the uncertainty means he has not imported anything for more than a year.

“Sales have dropped 90 percent compared with six months ago.

New details highlight Lion Air jet’s problems before crash JAKARTA — New details about the crashed Lion Air jet’s previous flight cast more doubt on the Indonesian airline’s claim to have fixed technical problems, as hundreds of personnel searched the sea for a fifth day Friday for victims and the plane’s fuselage.

The brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane plunged into the Java Sea early Monday, just minutes after taking off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

Herson, head of the Bali-Nusa Tenggara Airport Authority, said the pilot on the plane’s previous flight on Sunday from Bali requested to return to the airport not long after takeoff but then reported the problem had been resolved. Several passengers have described the problem as a terrifying loss of altitude.

Lion Air, a budget carrier that is the biggest domestic airline in Indonesia, has said the unspecified problem was fixed after Sunday’s flight, but the fatal flight’s pilots also made a “return to base” request not long after takeoff.

“Shortly after requesting RTB, the pilot then contacted the control tower again to inform that the plane had run normally and would not return” to Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport on Sunday, Herson, who uses a single name, told The Associated Press. “The captain said the problem was resolved and he decided to continue the trip to Jakarta.”

Data from flight-tracking websites show both flights had highly erratic speed and altitude after takeoff, though confirmation is required from data recorded by the aircraft’s “black box” flight recorders.

Indonesia’s Tempo news website published a minute-by-minute summary of what it said were the conversations between air traffic control and the pilots of Monday’s fatal flight, who reported a “flight control problem” and were unsure of their altitude. Asked about the accuracy of the report, National Transportation Safety Committee deputy head Haryo

Satmiko said it had “similarities” with the information received “legally” by investigators.

Officials displayed one of the jet’s two flight recorders at a news conference Thursday evening, later confirmed to be the flight data recorder, and said they would immediately attempt to download information and begin an analysis.

But progress has been hampered by the black box not being fully intact and it needs special handling to ensure its data survive, a process that is continuing, according to the National Transport Safety Committee. It said the “crash-survivable memory unit” was opened and washed and some of its wiring will need to be replaced and a new shell provided from Lion Air to enable a download of data.

“In principle, all data we have obtained, including flight data and air navigation, and also from other sources — we find that there have indeed been problems” with the plane, Satmiko said.

“We will prove more technical problems with data recorded in the black box.”

Satmiko said investigators had already contacted the pilot of the plane’s Sunday flight. The problems with it were “just as it circulates on media and social media,” he said, referring to accounts of passengers.

One of them, Diah Mardani, told a television program earlier this week that after takeoff “the plane suddenly fell, then rose, then fell again harder and shook.”

“All the passengers started shouting, ‘God is Great,’” she said. “The atmosphere was very tense.”

She said she was traveling with a group of more than 50 colleagues and many were crying with relief after landing in Jakarta.

A team from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board including Boeing experts has joined the Indonesian investigation. Indonesian investigators will also travel to the U.S. to meet with the designers of the new-generation Boeing jet.

Hundreds of personnel and dozens of

vessels including specialized ships with sonar and other detection technology are involved in the search effort in seas northeast of Jakarta. Four ping locators — which are lowered into the sea to listen for the black box’s signal — are now being used to locate the cockpit voice recorder after an additional unit was contributed by the U.S. More than 60 body bags containing human remains have been sent to police medical experts for identification since the search began, but as of Thursday only one victim has been identified and buried.

Families of those on board have offered their DNA for testing.

Avi Riyanto, director of airworthiness at the transport ministry, said it is closely monitoring flights of other Boeing 737 MAX planes in Indonesia.

“The currently operating Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft have been inspected and we will continue to monitor and supervise closely, day by day, and if it is found to be significant we will do another inspection and ground them if needed.”

The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 on board. Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. The ban was completely lifted in June. The U.S. lifted a decadelong ban in 2016.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia’s youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fastgrowing region of more than 600 million people. (ap)

Marquez wins Malaysian MotoGP as Rossi crashes out of lead

SEPANG - World champion Marc Marquez won the Malaysian MotoGP Sunday despite starting in seventh position after being hit with a grid penalty, surging past Valentino Rossi who crashed out when leading.

Heading up along Jalan Raya Uluwatu from Jimbaran and around 30 minutes’ drive past the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, a junction with signs that clearly bear ‘Jalan Labuan Sait’ leads you along a hilly but smooth 3.5km asphalt route. This region has developed with its rise to fame over the past decade, and is now lined with shops, surf lodges and neat western-style cafes targeted at the surfing crowd.

Beach access is down the slope across the road from a large parking area. Prior to this is a bridge that connects the two sides of the limestone cliff, offering a glimpse down to the beach from up high.

Halfway down the flight of stairs is a temple that overlooks the surf, and sharing the coastal forest features with Uluwatu, you will occasionally witness playful grey long-tailed macaques playing around the stairs on the Balinese ‘gapura’ gate, and

high up in the acacia trees. A fun fact: Padang Padang Beach was featured as a romantic setting in the 2010 big-screen adaptation of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’.

Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you are greeted by a gorgeous sight: a fringed beach with fine, white sand, blue waters and a distant horizon. There are board rentals here provided by the locals if you don’t have your own but would like to try (warning: the waves here break over shallow coral and are not suitable for beginners). Although the big waves beyond the reef breaks are limited to advanced surfers, the shore is great for family fun and leisure, and there are local warungs on Padang Padang Beach serving light meals and refreshments. Sand castles, splashing, sunbathing, lying down with a good read under a parasol, or simply sitting back to enjoy the exotic views… all are welcome. (IBP/net)

Suzuki’s Alex Rins came in second after overtaking Yamaha rider Johann Zarco, who finished third, in the final stage of the race at Sepang.

Italian star Rossi finished 18th after tumbling off his bike on the 16th lap and losing the lead to Marquez, who was crowned world champion last month in Japan.

Nine-time world champion Rossi, second on the grid, looked to be heading for his first win in Malaysia since 2010 as he dominated the early stages.

However Marquez, who qualified in pole position but was hit with a six-place grid penalty for impeding another rider, slowly worked his way through the pack.

The Spaniard reached second place and was slowly closing the gap on Rossi, 39, when the Italian fell off his bike as he leaned into a corner.

He got up and continued but by that point victory had already slipped out of his grasp.

Marquez, 25, was dominant in the final stages of the race and

opened up a big gap to the rest of the field.

“The start was not perfect but then I started to take out the riders step-by-step,” said Marquez.

“I started to feel better and better, and I started to see I was catching (Rossi).”

Marquez also lost his pole position in the Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas in April and was dropped to fourth on the starting grid after being penalised for disturbing Maverick Vinales in qualifying.

He went on to win that race for the sixth consecutive time.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso, the winner in Malaysia in 2016 and 2017, could only manage sixth but retains second place in the overall standings, with Rossi’s crash leaving the Italian in third with one race remaining.

The rain stayed away after organisers shifted the start of the MotoGP two hours earlier in a bid to avoid tropical downpours, which usually occur in the late afternoon in Malaysia.

Leicester City footballers in Bangkok to pay respects to Vichai

Players and staff from Leicester City were set to arrive in Bangkok Sunday to attend a mourning rite for the club’s chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, whose death last week in a helicopter crash stunned the Premier League club.

Sunday marks the second day of a week-long ceremony held at Wat Thepsirin, one of Bangkok’s most famous temples which typically serves as the site for funerals of very

important Thais.

Over the coming days Thailand’s business and political elites are expected to visit the temple to pay their respects, while monks will chant

Buddhist verses over the duty-free mogul’s body.

Vichai, 60, died last week, along with four others, when his helicopter crashed and burst into flames moments after taking off from Leicester’s pitch following a match.

His death sent shockwaves through Leicester, where the charismatic Vichai had become a beloved figure

It was under Vichai’s ownership that Leicester crafted one of the biggest fairytales in English football history by winning the 2015/16 Premier League, having started the season as 5,000-1 outsiders for the title. On Saturday the team played at Cardiff City, their first match since his death, with players from both teams coming together to pay their respects before the game.

Massive banners featuring Thailand’s flag saying “R.I.P. Vichai” moved across the stadium, and the crowd observed a minute of silence.

Fans wore T-shirts with Vichai’s picture on it, underneath the words “The Boss”.

After the match, 13 members of Leicester City -- including manager Claude Puel, striker Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki -- boarded a chartered flight to Bangkok, according to a statement from Vichai’s company, King Power.

Along with director of football Jon Rudkin, the other players attending are all part of the first-team squad. They are team captain Wes Morgan, defenders Harry Maguire, Christian Fuchs and Ben Chiwell, midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison, Marc Albrighton and Andy King.

Leicester City footballers in Bangkok to pay respects to Vichai

Players and staff from Leicester City were set to arrive in Bangkok Sunday to attend a mourning rite for the club’s chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, whose death last week in a helicopter crash stunned the Premier League club.

Sunday marks the second day of a week-long ceremony held at Wat Thepsirin, one of Bangkok’s most famous temples which typically serves as the site for funerals of very

important Thais.

Over the coming days Thailand’s business and political elites are expected to visit the temple to pay their respects, while monks will chant

Buddhist verses over the duty-free mogul’s body.

Vichai, 60, died last week, along with four others, when his helicopter crashed and burst into flames moments after taking off from Leicester’s pitch following a match.

His death sent shockwaves through Leicester, where the charismatic Vichai had become a beloved figure

It was under Vichai’s ownership that Leicester crafted one of the biggest fairytales in English football history by winning the 2015/16 Premier League, having started the season as 5,000-1 outsiders for the title. On Saturday the team played at Cardiff City, their first match since his death, with players from both teams coming together to pay their respects before the game.

Massive banners featuring Thailand’s flag saying “R.I.P. Vichai” moved across the stadium, and the crowd observed a minute of silence.

Fans wore T-shirts with Vichai’s picture on it, underneath the words “The Boss”.

After the match, 13 members of Leicester City -- including manager Claude Puel, striker Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki -- boarded a chartered flight to Bangkok, according to a statement from Vichai’s company, King Power.

Along with director of football Jon Rudkin, the other players attending are all part of the first-team squad. They are team captain Wes Morgan, defenders Harry Maguire, Christian Fuchs and Ben Chiwell, midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison, Marc Albrighton and Andy King.

Lacazette salvages Arsenal’s unbeaten run, slows Liverpool’s title charge Arsenal manager Unai Emery is happy with his side’s progress, but admits there is still work to do to match Liverpool’s title challenge after a thrilling 1-1 draw between the sides on Saturday.

Marquez wins Malaysian MotoGP as Rossi crashes out of lead

SEPANG - World champion Marc Marquez won the Malaysian MotoGP Sunday despite starting in seventh position after being hit with a grid penalty, surging past Valentino Rossi who crashed out when leading.

Padang Padang Beach Popular Beach and Surf Spot in South Bali PECATU - Padang Padang Beach, locally referred to as Pantai Labuan Sait, is one of Bali’s most famous surf spots, located on the north-western coast of the island’s Bukit Peninsula, and just a kilometre southwest of the Anantara Bali Uluwatu. This beach features an exotic setting; a simply stunning one hundred meter-long stretch of sand that is accessible down a flight of stairs through a unique hollow rock entrance. The surf has a steady set of barrels during good weather, attracting wave riders from around the world. Part of the group of worldclass surf spots that line the coast of the southern peninsula, Padang Padang Beach lies several kilometres in between Bingin and Uluwatu, among which surfers usually hop to interchangeably for a different set of challenges and another thrill for the day. This beach is also a regular spot for international surfing events, the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang being

the most frequent.

Heading up along Jalan Raya Uluwatu from Jimbaran and around 30 minutes’ drive past the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, a junction with signs that clearly bear ‘Jalan Labuan Sait’ leads you along a hilly but smooth 3.5km asphalt route. This region has developed with its rise to fame over the past decade, and is now lined with shops, surf lodges and neat western-style cafes targeted at the surfing crowd.

Beach access is down the slope across the road from a large parking area. Prior to this is a bridge that connects the two sides of the limestone cliff, offering a glimpse down to the beach from up high.

Halfway down the flight of stairs is a temple that overlooks the surf, and sharing the coastal forest features with Uluwatu, you will occasionally witness playful grey long-tailed macaques playing around the stairs on the Balinese ‘gapura’ gate, and

high up in the acacia trees. A fun fact: Padang Padang Beach was featured as a romantic setting in the 2010 big-screen adaptation of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’.

Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you are greeted by a gorgeous sight: a fringed beach with fine, white sand, blue waters and a distant horizon. There are board rentals here provided by the locals if you don’t have your own but would like to try (warning: the waves here break over shallow coral and are not suitable for beginners). Although the big waves beyond the reef breaks are limited to advanced surfers, the shore is great for family fun and leisure, and there are local warungs on Padang Padang Beach serving light meals and refreshments. Sand castles, splashing, sunbathing, lying down with a good read under a parasol, or simply sitting back to enjoy the exotic views… all are welcome. (IBP/net)

Italian star Rossi finished 18th after tumbling off his bike on the 16th lap and losing the lead to Marquez, who was crowned world champion last month in Japan.

Nine-time world champion Rossi, second on the grid, looked to be heading for his first win in Malaysia since 2010 as he dominated the early stages.

However Marquez, who qualified in pole position but was hit with a six-place grid penalty for impeding another rider, slowly worked his way through the pack.

The Spaniard reached second place and was slowly closing the gap on Rossi, 39, when the Italian fell off his bike as he leaned into a corner.

He got up and continued but by that point victory had already slipped out of his grasp.

Marquez, 25, was dominant in the final stages of the race and

opened up a big gap to the rest of the field.

“The start was not perfect but then I started to take out the riders step-by-step,” said Marquez.

“I started to feel better and better, and I started to see I was catching (Rossi).”

Marquez also lost his pole position in the Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas in April and was dropped to fourth on the starting grid after being penalised for disturbing Maverick Vinales in qualifying.

He went on to win that race for the sixth consecutive time.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso, the winner in Malaysia in 2016 and 2017, could only manage sixth but retains second place in the overall standings, with Rossi’s crash leaving the Italian in third with one race remaining.

The rain stayed away after organisers shifted the start of the MotoGP two hours earlier in a bid to avoid tropical downpours, which usually occur in the late afternoon in Malaysia.

LOS ANGELES - LeBron James scored 28 points as the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Portland Trail Blazers by holding on for a 114-110 win on Saturday.

El Chapo in dock for biggest US drugs trial

NEW YORK - Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman goes on trial in New York on Monday, accused of running the world’s biggest drug cartel and spending a quarter of a century smuggling more than 155 tons of cocaine into the United States.

The mammoth trial in a Brooklyn federal court, which will cost millions of dollars and is expected to last more than four months, will see one of the world’s most notorious criminals face the US justice system.

Prosecutors spent years piecing together a sweeping case against Guzman, who was extradited in 2017 after twice escaping prison in Mexico -- first hidden in a laundry cart, then slipping down a tunnel that reached his prison shower.

Guzman has been branded the world’s biggest drug lord since Colombia’s Pablo Escobar, who was dubbed “The King of Cocaine” and was one of the wealthiest men in the world until police shot him dead in 1993.

Experts say the government has a near water-tight case likely to send Guzman, 61, to a maximum security US prison for the rest of his life. But at what price?

“Is it going to stop even one additional pound of cocaine from coming into the United States?

Probably not. The machine keeps rolling,” says Rob Heroy, a North Carolina lawyer who has defended other Mexican drug barons.

The Sinaloa cartel that Guzman founded in 1989 is still hugely powerful. His co-defendant Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada remains at large, and violent drug trafficking continues unabated in Mexico.

Last year, there was a record 29,000 murders in Mexico. In the United States, opioid addiction has spiraled into an epidemic. In 2016, an average of 174 Americans died every day from drug overdoses.

- ‘Most expensive trial in history’ -

Jury selection will be conducted in security conditions reserved only for the most dangerous defendants.

US District Court Judge Brian Cogan will preside over the process behind closed doors.

The 12 jurors, with six alternates, will remain anonymous. US Marshals will escort them to and from court every day.

These ordinary men and women will determine whether Guzman -the diminutive father of two whose nickname means “shorty” -- is guilty or not of 11 trafficking, firearms and money laundering charges.

According to the indictment,

the Sinaloa cartel, which Guzman is accused of leading from 1989 to 2014, became “the largest drug trafficking organization in the world... with thousands of members.”

US prosecutors contend that from 1989 to 2014, the cartel smuggled at least 340,892 pounds (154,626 kilograms) of cocaine into the United States, as well as heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana, raking in $14 billion.

Guzman pleads not guilty, but the government has presented so much evidence -- more than 300,000 pages and at least 117,000 audio recordings -- that the defense complains they haven’t had enough time to review it all.

Heroy estimates the trial will cost US taxpayer “more than $50 million,” a price tag that includes protection programs for at least some of the several hundred witnesses expected to testify.

“It’s probably set up to be the most expensive trial in the history of the US,” he told AFP. Even Guzman’s lawyers are in the dark as to all the former associates, hired hands or rivals who have turned informants. (afp)

‘I won’t survive’: Iranians reel from sanctions

TEHRAN - Seventy-year-old Heidar Fekri has been selling industrial equipment from his small store in a Tehran bazaar since before the revolution, but for the first time he is not sure he can survive.

He means it literally: “My shelves are empty, my warehouses are empty and soon I will have to close the doors. This has been my entire life -- I won’t survive long after the doors close.”

Iran’s economy had plenty of problems even before US President Donald Trump decided in May to abandon the 2015 nuclear deal and reimpose “crippling” sanctions.

But that move exacerbated a record drop in Iran’s currency, down 70 percent in the past year, and prompted an exodus of foreign firms.

Anticipation of the return of the oil embargo -- due to kick in on Monday -- has already plunged the country into recession and will see the economy shrink by 3.6 percent next year, says the International Monetary Fund.

For Fekri, who has been bringing in industrial pumps and drills from Europe for 47 years, the uncertainty means he has not imported anything for more than a year.

“Sales have dropped 90 percent compared with six months ago.

New details highlight Lion Air jet’s problems before crash JAKARTA — New details about the crashed Lion Air jet’s previous flight cast more doubt on the Indonesian airline’s claim to have fixed technical problems, as hundreds of personnel searched the sea for a fifth day Friday for victims and the plane’s fuselage.

The brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane plunged into the Java Sea early Monday, just minutes after taking off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

Herson, head of the Bali-Nusa Tenggara Airport Authority, said the pilot on the plane’s previous flight on Sunday from Bali requested to return to the airport not long after takeoff but then reported the problem had been resolved. Several passengers have described the problem as a terrifying loss of altitude.

Lion Air, a budget carrier that is the biggest domestic airline in Indonesia, has said the unspecified problem was fixed after Sunday’s flight, but the fatal flight’s pilots also made a “return to base” request not long after takeoff.

“Shortly after requesting RTB, the pilot then contacted the control tower again to inform that the plane had run normally and would not return” to Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport on Sunday, Herson, who uses a single name, told The Associated Press. “The captain said the problem was resolved and he decided to continue the trip to Jakarta.”

Data from flight-tracking websites show both flights had highly erratic speed and altitude after takeoff, though confirmation is required from data recorded by the aircraft’s “black box” flight recorders.

Indonesia’s Tempo news website published a minute-by-minute summary of what it said were the conversations between air traffic control and the pilots of Monday’s fatal flight, who reported a “flight control problem” and were unsure of their altitude. Satmiko said it had “similarities” with the information received “legally” by investigators.

Officials displayed one of the jet’s two flight recorders at a news conference Thursday evening, later confirmed to be the flight data recorder, and said they would immediately attempt to download information and begin an analysis.

But progress has been hampered by the black box not being fully intact and it needs special handling to ensure its data survive, a process that is continuing, according to the National Transport Safety Committee. It said the “crash-survivable memory unit” was opened and washed and some of its wiring will need to be replaced and a new shell provided from Lion Air to enable a download of data.

“In principle, all data we have obtained, including flight data and air navigation, and also from other sources — we find that there have indeed been problems” with the plane, Satmiko said.

“We will prove more technical problems with data recorded in the black box.”

Satmiko said investigators had already contacted the pilot of the plane’s Sunday flight. The problems with it were “just as it circulates on media and social media,” he said, referring to accounts of passengers.

One of them, Diah Mardani, told a television program earlier this week that after takeoff “the plane suddenly fell, then rose, then fell again harder and shook.”

“All the passengers started shouting, ‘God is Great,’” she said. “The atmosphere was very tense.”

She said she was traveling with a group of more than 50 colleagues and many were crying with relief after landing in Jakarta.

A team from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board including Boeing experts has joined the Indonesian investigation. Indonesian investigators will also travel to the U.S. to meet with the designers of the new-generation Boeing jet.

Hundreds of personnel and dozens of

vessels including specialized ships with sonar and other detection technology are involved in the search effort in seas northeast of Jakarta. Four ping locators — which are lowered into the sea to listen for the black box’s signal — are now being used to locate the cockpit voice recorder after an additional unit was contributed by the U.S. More than 60 body bags containing human remains have been sent to police medical experts for identification since the search began, but as of Thursday only one victim has been identified and buried.

Families of those on board have offered their DNA for testing.

Avi Riyanto, director of airworthiness at the transport ministry, said it is closely monitoring flights of other Boeing 737 MAX planes in Indonesia.

“The currently operating Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft have been inspected and we will continue to monitor and supervise closely, day by day, and if it is found to be significant we will do another inspection and ground them if needed.”

The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 on board. Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. The ban was completely lifted in June. The U.S. lifted a decadelong ban in 2016.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia’s youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fastgrowing region of more than 600 million people. (ap)

At least, there are six types of sea shells to be used as decoration. For once ordering sea shell, said Suryani, she usually requests 100 kilograms per type of the shell. The purchase of sea shell is made when receiving an order from consumers. “Our order is fluctuating. Sometimes there are a few pieces in a month and sometimes we get no order at all. So, the order of the shell is made if there are already craft orders,” she added.

Habitually, the keben crafts are ordered on average of 30 pieces. To accomplish the order, she should engage six craftsmen where one craftsman can produce two pieces of keben basket each day.

The price offered for this shell-decorated craft varies based on the complexity of the design and the variety of sea shells in use. On average, the price is between IDR 200,000 and IDR 300,000. Other than fulfilling the demand of buyers in Bali, this shell-decorated handicraft also draws the interest of consumers from outside Bali. “Some buyers from Sulawesi also order my craft products,” concluded Suryani. Becky Frankiewicz, president of staffing firm ManpowerGroup North America, said companies are trying a variety of strategies to fill jobs. Many retailers are removing the label “seasonal” from their job postings and looking for permanent workers instead.

Others are dropping their requirements for a college degree.

“We absolutely see employers getting more and more creative about ways to get people in,” Frankiewicz said.

By some measures, consumers are the most confident they have been in 18 years, and their spending is propelling brisk economic growth. The economic expansion is now the second-longest on record, and October marked the 97th straight month of hiring, a record streak.

Strength in their customer demand has been a key factor leading companies to steadily add workers. Though economists have predicted that hiring will eventually slow as the pool of unemployed Americans dwindles, there’s no sign of that happening yet.

Still, the latest month of healthy job growth might not tip many votes in the

midterm elections. Polls have suggested that while Americans generally approve of the economy’s performance, that sentiment hasn’t necessarily broadened support for President Donald Trump or for Republican congressional candidates.

The strong job growth and bigger pay increases will likely encourage the Federal Reserve to keep raising short-term interest rates. Most analysts expect the Fed to resume its rate hikes in December.

Hurricane Michael, which slammed into the Florida Panhandle and southern Georgia last month, had no discernible effect on the jobs data, the government said. Still, October’s outsize gain might have reflected, in part, a rebound from September, when Hurricane Florence depressed job growth.

Hiring in October was strong in higherand middle-income jobs. Professional and business services, which include engineers, architects and accountants, gained 35,000 jobs. Manufacturers added 32,000 after two months of smaller gains, defying fears that Trump’s trade fights would slow hiring in that sector. Construction companies added 30,000 positions.

Retailers barely hired, adding just 2,400

positions, possibly reflecting the Sears bankruptcy. Restaurants and hotels gained 33,000, most of them lower-paying.

In the July-September quarter, consumer spending grew by the most in four years and helped the economy expand at a 3.5 percent annual rate. That growth followed a 4.2 percent annual pace in the April-June quarter.

Combined, the two quarters produced the strongest six-month stretch of growth in four years.

Housing remains a weak spot in the economy, with sales of existing homes having fallen for six straight months as mortgage rates have risen to nearly 5 percent. But slower sales have started to limit home price increases, which had been running at more than twice the pace of wage gains.

Although pay increases can help boost spending and propel the economy’s growth, they can also lead companies to raise prices to cover their higher labor costs. That trend, in turn, can accelerate inflation.

So far, though, inflation remains in check.

WASHINGTON - U.S. businesses ramped up hiring in October, and wages rose by the largest year-overyear amount in nearly a decade, a combination that is pulling a rising share of Americans into the job market.

In the final major economic report before Tuesday’s congressional elections, the government said Friday that U.S. employers added a robust 250,000 jobs in October. The unemployment rate stayed at a five-decade low of 3.7 percent.

Healthy economic growth is spurring employers to hire at a rapid pace that shows no sign of flagging even with the economy in its 10th year of expansion.

With the supply of unemployed dwindling, companies appear to be finally putting up generous enough pay raises to attract and retain employees.

Average hourly wages rose 3.1 percent in October from a year earlier, the fastest annual gain since 2009.

Still, inflation has picked up a bit in the past year as well, eating away at some of those pay raises. And the increase in wages last month also partly reflected a one-time drop in pay a year ago because of Hurricane Harvey.

Even so, October’s increase suggests that after a decade of anemic growth, wage growth is picking up. At the same time, an influx of new job-seekers increased the proportion of Americans with jobs to its highest level since 2009.

The economy has now added jobs for 97 straight months, a record. That steady hiring has helped reduce the unemployment rate for Latinos to 4.4 percent, a record low.

Teenage unemployment dropped last month to 11.9 percent, the lowest since 1969. And the proportion of Americans without a high school degree who are working has reached the highest point on records dating from 1992.

“It doesn’t get any better than this,” said Sun Wong Sohn, chief economist at SS Economics. “Evidently, the word has spread that there are good jobs to be had at decent wages.”

Cheyenne Mauzy of Springfield, Missouri, had held out for higher pay when she started job hunting in June. She felt she needed a high enough hourly wage to make up for the cost of child care for her three children.

“There was a minimum we had to make,” Mauzy, 28, said, referring to calculations she made with her husband. “I had to bring home enough on top of child care. If I am just going to work to pay for our child care, I should be our child care.”

As most people know, there are a staggering number of talented painters in Bali, including many women who paint in a variety of styles. For a variety of reasons, female painters do not tend to exhibit their works as often as their male counterparts.

In order to encourage the likelihood of having their works seen by the art-loving public, several female painters have coalesced into the Perupa Perempuan Bali (Bali Women Artists). The PPB as they are known hold regular exhibitions and while each member has their own unique style and approach to art, they share a passion for making art which is clearly seen in their works.

Sutriatini explains: “there are no boundaries of age or gender when it comes to painting, our youngest member is 17 year old and all of us are dedicated to continuously developing our skills”.

Their latest exhibition entitles Vidya Diva draws attention to the light that women embody and all of the works of the exhibition speak to some aspect of womanhood.

While they often exhibition works on a range of themes this particular exhibition sheds light on their experience as female painters.

This is the second time that they hold a group exhibition at the Denpasar Art Center’s Gedung Kriya, known for hosting exceptionally high quality exhibitions. As Denpasar Art Center director of arts

programming Pak Gung Adiputra explained: “although the gallery itself can only house works of a certain size, there is a kind of pride in having exhibited here due to the history and charisma of the space itself. This is the second time that we invite this woman’s group to exhibit.

We want to provide as wide a space as possible to female artists who need a special kind of support”.

The exhibition in 2017 was a great success and was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and while such funding was not available this year, the Art Center was determined to hold the second of what they hope to make a regular yearly event partly because of the success of last year’s exhibition, partly because of the high quality of art produced by these

female painters and as Pak Adiputra explained also to shed light on the powerful role that women play as human beings. “In reference to the Mahabarata, in which all of the gods get their power from their female partners, we came up with the title Vidiya Diva” which means divine light. We changed Deva to Diva to make it more contemporary”, he said with a smile.

After being asked if they painted as a hobby or if they were actually professional painters, exhibition curator responded by saying: “they come from a variety of backgrounds , maybe we can hear from each of the artists themselves to get a clearer picture”. This was followed by each of the 18 women participating in the exhibition giv-

ing brief, humble and remarkably impressive descriptions of their experience and background as artists.

Ranging from international acclaim to technically innovation, deeply spiritual and just about everything in between, they left no doubt that they not only represent the tremendous talent found amongst female artists in Bali but also that the power expressed in their works indeed represents Vidya Diva.

Governor of Bali’s wife Ibu Putu Putri Suasitni will official open the Vidya Diva exhibition on November 3, 5 pm at the Gedung Kriya at the Denpasar Art Center, with the Governor of Bali’s wife and art lover Ibu Putu Putri Suastini and will remain on display until December 3rd, 2018. (kmb)

Bali develops traditional medicine

Sacked Sri Lankan PM’s residence becomes symbol of power struggle

DENPASAR - Bali is now developing traditional medicine as one of the priority programs in the health sector. Moreover, the Island of the Gods has a lot of literature in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts and other documents related to usadha (traditional healing). The policy that will be covered with legal instrument is primarily meant to protect and explore the benefits of Balinese local wisdom in an effort to realize public health.

“In practice, this has been going on for a long time until these days in Bali. In the past, it was very popular, but today amid the modernization of medical science, such tradition has been left behind so that it has diminished,” said Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, in a press conference at the Sabha Praja, Bali Governor’s Office, on Friday (Nov. 2).

Actually, continued Koster, the tendency of the people’s way of life in the future will be back to nature not only Balinese, but also international community. Therefore, traditional medical facilities must be prepared from now on. It starts with the setting up of a special area to plant herbal plants. Balinese people call it the Taru Pramana, namely the plants specifically cultivated for traditional medicine. Today, some of the plants are still available and rare, while some others are extinct.

“If it is localized in one area, people in need can easily get there. They will be no longer dizzy to look for,” he explained.

Koster added the special area named the Usadha Park will be built in Bangli district. The construc-

tion will be begun in 2019 on three hectares of land owned by the Bali government. From the Usadha Park, the herbal medicine raw material industry can then be developed. For example, the post-harvest collection center for medicinal plants, herbal extract industry or the home industry developing herbal medicines such as loloh (herbal drink), massage, tutuh (nose drop) and others.

The Ministry of Health is even stated to be disbursing funds for the development of this industry in Bangli. Another development, of course, is the construction of traditional health facilities, namely the Griya Sehat or a kind of health clinic.

In accordance with Regulation of Minister of Health No.15/2018, this traditional health service center seeks traditional health services borne by the BPJS. “We will establish it at Hindu University of Indonesia and in several other places to make it pilot project for traditional health services.

Actually, this already exists but the capacity remains small. We will expand it with the regional budget fund,” he explained.

According to Koster, the health workers to be assigned to the Griya Sehat or Policlinic of Traditional Health Services integrated with hospital to the public health center must have special education or competency in medical treatment. The traditional health personnel education was initiated by the Hindu University of Indonesia, Denpasar. However, the Bali provincial government will also induce state and private universities to participate in developing traditional medical education. In this case, traditional health workers should not be careless.

“This education is meant to standardize the profession of traditional healers which have been better known by the community as Balian.

Standardized traditional healers will be recorded as a Registered Certificate by the Ministry of Health,” he explained.

Koster added that Bali could also be a pioneer in developing the Center for Standardization of Herbal Medicine laboratory that issues Certificate of Analysis for herbal medicine and cosmetic ingredients. This is an effort to provide raw materials for standardized herbal medicines with high economic value and competitiveness at the world level. In addition, universities in Bali such as Udayana University and Hindu University of Indonesia can also be pioneers in developing the Center for Usadhic and Herbal Medicine Research.

“This is very complete. There are

scientific references including the local wisdom. We now accommodate it through a laboratory, study center, the area of traditional medicinal plants.

After that, we develop the health and industry human resources. This is a new economic movement,” he concluded.

A lecturer at Pharmacy Department of the Udayana University, I Made Agus Gelgel Wirasuta, stated that Balinese healing (usadha) in the international world is called Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). fund the counter and the results are obtained by both parties. “They have accepted the idea. Now, it depends on the local government to respond to this. Moreover, they offer us to learn more about the management of special tourism harbor and are ready to facilitate it,” he explained.

Based on his observations during a working visit to the City of Marseille with the group of the Regional Representative Council of the RI, the harbor management specifically for tourism in Marseille is very good. As soon as tourists drop off, they are offered with various tourism agendas. So, indirectly such a way can make tourists interested in visiting and shopping.

“Travelers coming with cruise line are definitely of top level class.

NOUMEA - The French Pacific islands of New Caledonia were voting Sunday on whether to become an independent nation, in a closely-watched test of support for France in one of its many territories scattered around the globe.

Some 18,000 kilometres (11,000 miles) from the French mainland, New Caledonia is home to a quarter of the world’s known supplies of nickel -- a vital electronics component -- and is a strategic foothold for France in the Pacific.

Voting in New Caledonia’s 284 polling stations opened at 8:00 am Sunday (2100 GMT Saturday) and was to end at 6.00 pm, with results expected the same evening.

The participation rate was 73.68 percent at 5:00 pm, much higher than at the same time during local elections in 2014.

Some 175,000 people are eligible to vote in the remote islands fringed by spectacular beaches, with opinion polls predicting a large majority in favour of staying French.

But there are fears the referendum could inflame tensions between indigenous Kanak people,

who tend to favour independence, and the white population, which boiled over into deadly violence in the 1980s.

The quasi-civil war claimed more than 70 lives. It led to the 1998 Noumea Accord which paved the way for the steady devolution of powers as well as Sunday’s referendum.

Separatists have urged Kanak voters to choose self-determination for Kanaky, their name for New Caledonia, and throw off the shackles of “colonial” authorities in Paris.

“It’s a great day for us. My father, my grandfather fought for this country and today is the second fight in the ballot box,” said proindependence supporter Patrick Watrone on Sunday, dressed in the colours of Kanak flag.

“Today, us young Kanaks, we have no jobs. If we are the ones who manage the country, we will

have more opportunities,” said Fabrice Ude, 28.

But indigenous people make up less than 50 percent of the electorate and some Kanaks back staying part of France, not least due to the 1.3 billion euros ($1.5 billion) the French state hands to the islands every year.

Going it alone, “I’m not sure we have all the assets we’d need to succeed,” said Marc Gnipate, a 62-year-old pensioner.

COLOMB0 - The banquet hall at Sri Lanka’s ousted prime minister’s official residence is packed with supporters -- many sleeping on chairs and the floor -- who have come to stand guard as he tussles for power with an old rival.

Thousands of loyalists from across the country are camped out at the Temple Trees residence in Colombo, a colonial-era bungalow where Ranil Wickremesinghe has been holed up since his shock dismissal more than a week ago.

Day and night they top up coconut oil lamps and keep jasmineperfumed incense sticks burning in the 5,000-capacity banquet hall -- usually reserved for state dinners and VIP weddings -- while the 69year-old plots his next move.

President Maithripala Sirisena sacked Wickremesinghe on October 26 but he has refused to accept the decision or to leave the residence so former strongman leader Mahinda Rajapakse -- who was named in his place -- can move in.

S.M. Faheed, a 73-year-old diehard supporter of Wickremesinghe’s United National Party (UNP), vowed to stay there until the constitutional crisis is resolved.

“I will not leave until Ranil is given the PM’s chair,” Faheed said.

“We are here to support him and make sure no one tries to throw him out of Temple Trees.”

“If I have to, I will stay here till I die.”

Wickremesinghe has asked lawmakers to vote to decide between him and Rajapakse and end the crisis, but parliament has been suspended since his sacking.

“If I win... (Rajapakse) must stand down. If he wins, I will

leave Temple Trees and move away,” Wickremesinghe told AFP on Friday.

But he will have trouble convincing his followers to give way.

“Sirisena is the most ungrateful man. May he be cursed and be struck by lightning,” said Jayanthi Jayewardena, an elderly supporter.

Sirisena won the presidency from Rajapakse in 2015 with the help of Wickremesinghe and his UNP. The two formed a coalition, but have since fallen out badly.

Hiking from Tateyama across the Northern Japan Alps

TATEYAMA is a small town on the edge of the Japanese Northern Alps and makes a great base to explore the mountains. It’s already on the map as the starting point for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route – a journey which involves cable car, bus and ropeway. These were originally built to provide supplies for the Kurobe Dam but now are for tourists.

Unfortunately there’s no hiking involved, but there’s a much older route for pilgrims travelling on foot.

From the 17th to the 19th centuries, Mt. Tateyama was designated as one of Japan’s three holy mountains along with Mt. Fuji and Mt. Hakusan.

It helped, of course, that are plenty of hot springs and sulphurous fumes coming out of the ground in the area.

Mount Tateyama

Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, at the foot of the mountain, is the centre of all this activity. Pilgrims, arriving here, imagined the hot springs were the gateway to the underworld and of course the stink of sulphur helped.

Since you had to walk through here to get to the summit of Mt. Tateyama, the pilgrimage symbolically represented a journey from hell to heaven. At the top, a Shinto shrine was built, where pilgrims would receive a blessing from the monks, and see it as a free ticket to the afterlife.

I visited the region last year for the Nunobashi Kanjoe Festival and am familiar with the sacred mountain but I want to explore further.

There’s a horseshoe walk starting and ending in Tateyama, taking 3-4 days, passing the Shomyo Falls, the

tallest waterfall in Japan. Unfortunately, I’m slightly pressed for time so take a cable car from Tateyama station up to Bijodaira, saving a few hours of hiking. In Japan trails are well marked and maintained and I have no problem finding my way.

From Midagahara the boarded pathway takes me across wetlands before plunging down to a stream.

From here it’s a steep climb up, but chains are provided to prevent sliding down the slope. It’s also extremely windy, a result of the passing typhoon, but I make it to the Tateyama Murodo hut at 2450m by early afternoon. The building is modern, but next to it is a wooden structure, erected around 300 years ago, the oldest mountain hut in Japan.

I’m now close to Hell Valley, and the threat from the sulphurous fumes is enough to warrant toxicity warnings on the hut’s notice board.

Just nearby is the Mikurigaike Crater Lake, whose cobalt blue stillness mirrors a beautiful image of the sacred mountain. In former times, the water in the lake, known as “a kitchen pond for god” was used to cook food offerings for the mountain gods.

Next morning I’m up at dawn, partly because I want to avoid an entire army of children who are on a school trip to the shrine at the top of the mountain. Even though it’s late July, patchy snowfields make the going tricky although there’s a paved path up to the half way stage.

After this, it’s a craggy stiff scramble to the summit. It’s so clear that I can make out the iconic shape of

Mount Fuji, two hundred miles away.

The legend of Oyama

In front of me is the shrine of Oyama where legend says that an 8th century hunter pursued a wounded bear only to see it transform into a golden Buddha. The hunter became a priest so he could look after this sacred place and monks still live here, offering a blessing and a taste of sake to those who come to pray.

Tateyama actually has three summits, connected by a long ridge. The highest, Mt. Onanji, at 3015m, is just beyond the temple, and there’s a definite sense of achievement as I take in the wonderful views. Of course you’re never alone in Japan and the summit is no exception.

My fellow Japanese hikers are all wearing the latest outdoor gear, definitely overdressed in the heat.

Of course everyone carries a small towel, obligatory to wipe the sweat off their brows. What I like about hiking here is that everyone is so polite, stopping to let you pass and always saying hello.

I follow the stony ridge climbing Mt. Masago, 2861m, and Mt. Bessan, 2399m, before descending to the Tsurugigozen mountain hut. I can see the turquoise crater lake and fumes rising from Jigokudani far down below.

From here I could carry on all the way back to Tateyama but time is too short. Instead I follow a twisting path which descends to the Rachiozawa campsite, on the banks of the river in Murodo. (IBP/net)

Needs of world herbal medicine predicted to reach USD 50 billion

DENPASAR — The needs of the world community for traditional medicine, known as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), are estimated to increase. WHO predicted the need for world herbal medicines reaches around USD 50 billion in 2050. This is an opportunity for Indonesia, especially Bali, as an international tourist destination to participate in getting dollars from the health sector through CAM and herbal medicines.

“According to the WHO, in 2050 the world needs for herbal medicines worth USD 50 billion.

If we think of domestic income, we cannot. We want the income coming from outside,” said a lecturer at Pharmacy Department of Udayana University, I Made Agus Gelgel Wirasuta, in Denpasar on Friday (Nov. 2).

According to Gelgel, there are many private companies pursuing herbal medicines in Bali and owned by foreigners. The company has a tremendous market shares and it even becomes the world’s top market. One of them is a cosmetics company in Karangasem.

“My alumnus works in the company. It has big market share and ranked third in Canada. It is in Bali, why don’t we hold it?” added the man who is a forensic toxicologist having written a lot of research on the standardization of herbal medicine.

If Bali can meet the market for herbal medicines or traditional medicines, Gelgel continued, Bali will not be shortage of raw materials. People will definitely cultivate medicinal plants when they have good prices. Moreover, the Ministry of Health is ready to support the post-harvest processing industry for medicinal plants.

So far, this potential has not been worked out properly.

“Actually, the market shares are large, the demands are large and so is the potential. Economically, Bali will not focus on tourism alone. There is an industry we build, but does not disturb tourism,” he explained.

As previously reported, Bali is now developing traditional medicine as one of the priority programs in the health sector.

Moreover, this Island of the Gods has a lot of literature in the form of palm-leaf manuscripts and other documents related to usadha or healing. The policy to be covered by the regulation is primarily mean to protect and

explore the benefits of Balinese local wisdom in an effort to realize public health.

Head of the Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, stated that herbal medicine is relatively safe and without side effects. After getting a diagnosis from a doctor, patients can choose treatment with herbal or chemical drugs.

“Doctors certainly know how the combination is,” he said.

According to Suarjaya, there has been a concept for the development of traditional medicine starting from public health center. Moreover, his agency has even trained quite large number of traditional health workers. A number of doctors, nurses and midwives have been specially trained in acupressure, potions and acupuncture. So far, there are many doctors pursuing acupuncture.

“On that account, it becomes a choice. For example, if patients want to be treated with acupuncture treatment, well… they will get it while if wishing a chemical drug, they will be given as requested. So, this is an option,” he explained. (kmb32)

Bali parliament recommends re-organizing Bali tourism

DENPASAR — The Bali House of Representatives finally invited tourism stakeholders, immigration office and representatives of Chinese network shops to the parliamentary building on Wednesday (Oct. 31). The meeting discussed about the issues of tourism in Bali, especially the violating and unhealthy business practices. This meeting was also attended by the Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, and the related agencies.

Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, conveyed the three points of the meeting’s conclusion immediately set forth into the recommendations of the House. He invited all parties having responsibility for maintaining the continuity of tourism in Bali, the executive especially the governor is recommended to enforce the rules firmly, and jointly reorganize tourism in Bali as a whole.

“In the future, seeing the condition has been messed up like this, we have to sit together and reorganize this tourism. I see the tour guides, travel agencies and restaurants are not going hand in hand. Every party wants to do their own will. We have been messed up like this, but no one is responsible,” he said.

In the meeting, a member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, stated the reports related to cheap tourism had actually entered the parliament since 2-3 years ago.

The reports include the cheap tours from China to Bali at the price of IDR 600,000 for 5 days has been at issue within the past few weeks. Bali was even labeled as a cheating country by Chinese tourists. The solution is only law enforcement,” said this PDI-P politician.

According to Adhi Ardhana, cheap tourism sponsored by Chinese shop networks has the potential to violate a number of rules. They are the law on business competition, the labor law, the money laundering law, the foreign investment law, and the Bali Regional Regulation on Tour Guides and Regional Regulations on Tourism Travel Services.

“We firmly hope that law enforcers and law enforcement agencies can take action. In other words, they should not only be raided but also investigated.

Having been investigated, if proven, send them to court,” he explained.

Secretary of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, I Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said that controlling the shops of the Chinese mafia network amounting to 28 shops should not be a difficult job.

Kariyasa asserted that it is necessary to investigate thoroughly whoever gets involved in this matter. The investigation must include the permits, clarity of goods on sale, sales tax, foreign labor issues to the use of Garuda state symbol for the stamps. In addition, the discipline needs to be done against the illegal travel agencies that build networks with these shops.

“Reorganization of business like this must be made by prioritizing the sales of MSME products of Balinese community. Create strong regulations to counteract similar activities in the future,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission I of the Bali House of Representatives, I Ketut Tama Tenaya, said the challenge of Bali tourism is not easy. Business competition will definitely occur, so that tourism must be protected in order not to go bankrupt. However, it should become a safe, quality, healthy, advanced and beneficial tourism for the people. “Legal actions must be taken as soon as possible. The violators must be cracked down on in order to result in a deterrent effect.

Don’t let it continue,” he said firmly.

Chairman of Commission IV, I Nyoman Parta, said he is disappointed with tourism players that did not appreciate to the efforts of Balinese people in caring for their culture as a major supporter of tourism where tourism players should be at the front row to do that.

It’s only in Bali tourists can see the beauty of nature as well as the uniqueness of Balinese culture inspired

by Hinduism. It includes the art performances that are second to none, even for free.

Surprising, deflation even occurs while on IMF-WB event DENPASAR - Based on the results of price monitoring in October 2018, there was a deflation of 0.09 percent. In Denpasar City, the deflation was recorded to reach 0.10 percent with the consumer price index (CPI) of 130.05.

Of the seven existing expenditure groups, t h e food-

stuff group contributed the most to deflation namely as much as 0.1733 percent. More specifically, the commodity with the largest deflation was contributed by broiler meat namely at 0.1335 percent.

Head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, stated that deflation in October 2018 was contributed by foodstuff at 0.87 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel at 0.14 percent and health group at 0 . 9 3 per-

cent.

Meanwhile, the group experiencing inflation included the clothing group at 0.73 percent, transportation, communication and financial services group (0.52 percent), processed food group, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco (0.14 percent) and education, recreation and sports group (0.06 percent).

Allegedly this deflation happened due to a decrease in purchasing power. However, Adi was not able to ascertain the cause of deflation due to a decrease in purchasing power or indeed a decline in prices. “It

needs further research. By using the illustration of inflation in other groups such as the core group and so on, it suggests that apparently the purchasing power may be not in trouble,” he said.

So, the deflation occurred in certain commodities like chicken meat and even rice in Denpasar merely constituted the interaction between demand and supply. When the supply is sufficient, the price drops.

Deputy Director of Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office, Azka Subhan, expressed his astonishment at the Bali’s consumer price index. Theoretically, the arrival of many participants of the IMF-WB Annual Meeting reaching around 40,000 should cause the demand to increase so the prices can rise. However, the opposite thing happened in October 2018, namely deflation. Azka predicted there will be inflation but not too high, but in fact it was deflation.

Previously, in the meeting of the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID), there was concern about inflation during the Eid, the IMF-WB Meeting, Christmas, New Year and Galungan. “That’s the vulnerable points of our inflation. Thankfully, deflation even occurred last October. Actually, there was an IMF-WB Meeting last October where many people came to Bali, but it even resulted in deflation,” he affirmed on Friday (Nov. 2).

Having been traced, price increases did not occur because all the participants had booked hotels two or one year ago. Thus, it did not disturb the room rate of hotels in October 2018. In terms of flight, tens of thousands of people were feared from entering Bali in the same month and will cause ticket prices to rise. But apparently, participants had booked tickets a year or six months before. In terms of food, many hotels have also prepared it well in advance. As a result, the price of food was under control.

“Hotels may have prepared bread, rice as well as the other needs of both domestic and foreign delegates far in advance. So, the preparation has been made ahead of time,” he explained.

Even if there was an alleged decline in purchasing power becoming the cause of deflation, more demand even came from international community and the IMFWB participants, so the purchasing power is impossible to have been the cause. (kmb42)

Contract signing of shortcut 5-6 to be held next week DENPASAR - The signing of the contract related to the tender process for the shortcut 5-6 of the Mengwitani-Singaraja road section will be done immediately.

Furthermore, the development of the shortcuts budgeted for more than IDR 165 billion from this state budget is targeted to have completed in 2019.

“It just needs to complete a little more administration and the contract can have been signed next week. In other words, this project is worked on in multi years, and we schedule it can be completed at the end of 2019,” said the Head of the National Road Authority (BBPJN) for Region VIII, Ketut Darmawahana, in Denpasar on

Thursday (Nov. 1).

According to Darmawahana, there are 10 shortcut points that will be worked on along the Mengwitani-Singaraja road section. After the shortcut 5-6, the governor of Bali hoped the development of shortcut 3-4 can be driven in 2019.

The Bali provincial government has even committed to completing

the land acquisition of shortcut 3-4 in the Bedugul area.

“There are crucial points in Bedugul as it has tourist routes to the botanical garden, and many other things. There are four intersections frequently resulting in congestion. We have the concept of creating a shortcut around the lake. Approximately, it will re-

quire funding of IDR 170 billion,” he explained.

Darmawahana added that after the shortcut 5-6 and 3-4 are built, the next priority is shortcut 1-2, 7-8, and 9-10. The design is now being prepared. Overall, the ten shortcut points require a budget of IDR 1.4 trillion for the construction and land acquisition. (kmb32)

MADRID - With six nominations, US singer Camila Cabello, whose hit song “Havana” reached the top of the US charts in January, is in prime position for the MTV Europe Music Awards held Sunday in Spain.

Indonesia finds ‘minor’ faults in two other 737-MAX jets after crash

Indonesia’s transport ministry said it had found “minor” faults in two other Boeing 737-MAX 8 jets, including a cockpit indicator display problem which an analyst said may be similar to one reported in the crashed Lion Air Jet. The ministry is inspecting 10 of the newly released jets owned by Lion and flagship carrier Garuda, as authorities analyse data from a recovered black box that may help explain why flight JT 610 plummeted into the Java Sea, killing 189 people on Monday.

Few details were released, but the ministry said it had looked over half a dozen jets so far and discovered that one had a problem linked to its cockpit display while another had a glitch in a jet stabilisation system. Both Lion-owned planes required new components, it said.

Aviation analyst Dudi Sudibyo said the cockpit display issue

could include a speed-and-altitude glitch reported in the doomed jet.

“With airplanes, even if there is a single, tiny fault it should not fly,” he added.

Stephen Wright, an aviation expert at the University of Leeds, told AFP that the faults identified by the transport ministry were “very minor.” He added that any problems with the new jet’s pitot-static system -- which determines speed and altitude among other measurements -- will be key to the probe.

The inspection comes as questions swirl about why a plane that had gone into service just months ago crashed into the sea minutes

after takeoff. The single-aisle jet, en route from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city, is one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes.

Budget carrier Lion Air’s admission that the doomed jet had a technical issue on a previous flight -- as well its abrupt fatal dive -- have raised questions about whether it had mechanical faults specific to the new model.

Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee said it was interviewing people who flew on the plane the day before the fatal crash. Some have reported a frightening, erratic trip, an assertion that

appears to be backed up by flight tracking data.

- Totally destroyed Earlier Friday, seats, wheels and other parts of the crashed jet were hauled from the depths off Indonesia’s north coast as search teams scoured the seabed for the fuselage.

“There is a lot of little debris, plane wheels, and seats -- all totally destroyed and in pieces,” said Isswarto, commander of the Indonesian navy’s search-and-rescue division.

Divers were searching a relatively shallow area about 25-35 metres deep, but have been finding fewer body parts than earlier in the week, he added. “They’re scattered everywhere and some may have been washed away by the current.”

Dozens of body bags containing

remains have been recovered from the crash site.

On Thursday, one of the plane’s black boxes was recovered, and authorities are hunting for the second one.

The black box could offer investigators their best chance of discovering why the jet crashed.

The devices help explain nearly 90 percent of all crashes, according to aviation experts.
