‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ plans 2018 Broadway debut

LOS ANGELES - After a hit debut on London’s West End this summer, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is in talks to move to New York’s Broadway in 2018, producers said on Friday. The play, based on author J.K. Rowling’s popular boy wizard character, is being planned for Broadway’s Lyric Theater, which will undergo a multi-million dollar revamp to house the elaborate production, the show’s producers said in a post on Rowling’s website Pottermore.com. The Lyric Theater is one of Broadway’s largest venues, with

nearly 1,900 seats, and has housed complex theatrical productions such as “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in 2005 and “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” which ran from 2010 to 2014. JAKARTA — Indonesian rescuers on Sunday recovered body parts in the sea where a police plane with 13 people aboard is believed to have crashed the previous day. The light aircraft lost contact Saturday on the way to the island of Batam, which is near Singapore, after taking off from an island off the southeast coast of Sumatra. All those aboard, including five crew and eight passengers, are feared dead, officials said. The M28 Skytruck plane is believed to have plunged into 24-meter (79-foot) -deep waters, said National Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo. He told a news conference that remains, probably of the victims, were found in the area where villagers earlier retrieved a seat and a bag containing a cellphone and police documents. He added that an oil spill was also found in the area. TV footage showed police

uniforms and other clothing also were retrieved from the sea. In Batam, local police chief Brig. Gen. Sambudi Gusdian quoted witnesses as saying they saw the plane explode after it crashed into the sea off Lingga district. Search teams involving Indonesia’s navy, customs office and maritime police, as well as aircraft from Singapore, were scouring a 518-square-kilometer (200-square-mile) sea area for the wreckage of the aircraft, Soelistyo said. Divers also were deployed. It was at least the second air accident in Indonesia in just over a week. On Nov. 24, a Bell 412 EP helicopter from the Indonesian army crashed in Indonesia’s part of Borneo island, killing three and leaving one missing.

Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of more than 250 million people, has been plagued by transportation accidents in recent years, from plane and train crashes to ferry sinkings.(ap)

Farmers need to change their crops in repsonse to supply and demand

Bangli - The price of agricultural commodities, like vegetables tend to fluctuate as market demand and production are not synchronised. Farmers need to take preventitive measures by changing their crops according to demands and what other regions are already producing. Acting Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, Ni Wayan Manik, explained that Bangli’s yields of vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes tend to be quite plentiful. However because many other regions produce these same crops, and there is not a huge demand for these crops, prices tend to plummet. “Vegetable harvests are often more than the market demands, which is why prices drop so low”, she explained while accompanied by the Head of Food and Horticulture, I Wayan Sujana Tagel. According to Manik, who is also an expert staff for the Regional

Secretary of Bangli, farmers need to change their cropping patterns so that different regions are not always competing with the same crops at the same time. This should be ongoing. “Most farmers are still planting by referring to season. It needs changing and in the future must be based on business prospects. This despite the fact that it has often been asserted that this leads to diminished soil fertility. “Unfortunately, it is still hard to convince farmers to use organic fetilizers as they claim that the chemical fertilizers lead to quicker growth of their plants. SINGARAJA - Bali’s agricultural sector Bali has not given a thorough blessing to the welfare of its farmers. Often local farm products are sold far too cheaply when cpmpared to the cost of prodcution. The quantity and quality of agricultural products needs to be encouraged so that farmers in Bali can earn a living. “There is a lot of potential for agriculture in Bali to flourish but the implementation of relevant policies has not improved the lives of farmers. Farmers still have a lot of trouble when it comes to marketing their products”, said Chairperson of the Women Farmers of the Province of Bali, Tutik Kusuma Wardhani who is also politician for the Democratic Party, Thursday (Dec. 1). She said that the income of farmers needs to be improved in order to avoid a desperate situation. Tutik also observed that there is a lot of uncultivated land that could be taken advantage of by farmers. “Farmers have frequently been made into objects while they should in fact be subject. I do hope that there will be intensive efforts to fight for the agricultural sector. Regional bylaws that provide incentive to farmers by lowering or eliminating taxes have been made. However, it cannot be

dammed because the population is very dense and reveneues are still oriented toward the tourism sector”, she said. Agriculture in Bali still widely applies conventional farming techniques and farmers need to have ongoing education about modern farming techniques that need to be tailored to the needs of farmers in these changing times. “Young people should be encouraged to get involved in the agricultural sector. Givernment policies are also needed. Now is the time to direct development in both rual and urban areas. I think it needs to start in the villages. We need to grow the rural economy and farming certainly creates job opportunities. Young people should not be forced to go the city to find work”, she explained. By empowering Buleleng’s agricultural sector, young people who cannot find work will also be less subsebtible to falling into criminal activity. “The government’s development of the welfare of farmers needs to start by focusing on rural areas. It is important that agricultrual processing take adavantage of modern technology. We cannot continue to use old methodes. IN the past Thailand learned hot to farm from Indonesia- but now their farming is much more advanced than ours”, she added. (kmb34)

Tourist visit to Bali increases 24 percent

DENPASAR — Data in the Ministry of Tourism indicate there is an increase in tourist arrivals to Bali by 24 percent. During the period of January-September 2015, foreign tourist visit reached 2.9 million. In the same period of this year it is recorded to reach 3.6 million. However, the increasing number of foreign tourist arrival is even considered to widen the gap among the regions in Bali.

Strati’s idea came after seeing hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees coming to Europe while diplomacy and politics failed to resolve their situation. “Only Mother Teresa’s humanism may save them,” Strati told The Associated Press. “This is Mother Teresa’s year.” The 50-year-old Strati decided

to unveil the portrait on Albania’s independence day. The tiny Western Balkan nation was part of the Ottoman Empire for almost five centuries until Nov. 28, 1912. Teresa, who was recently made a saint, was born to Albanian parents. Strati detested that some countries have erected fences to hold back refugees coming to Europe for a better life.

Teresa’s canonization by Pope Francis at the Vatican in September and the migrant crisis inspired him to create his latest mosaic. Strati is hoping for his 10th Guinness World record in as many years for a piece of art using the most staples, following nine other mosaics using items like toothpicks, coffee beans and wine corks. For the Teresa portrait, he used

white and brown staples readily available in many stores. “I saw so many staples used for leaflets and papers at the G-20 summit. But those papers have yet to bring peace and a better life in this world,” he said. Strati donated his mosaic to the Kosovo museum. BANGLI- Mount Batur geosite in Kintamani is a tourist attraction owned by the local government who will extend their MoU of joint management with the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). The process is already underway and should be complete by the end of the month. A similar measure is also being carried out for the Penelokan attraction. Since the area is managed by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency, it is necessary to make an MoU. “The MoU has been in operation for four year and will be extended for another year and includes 21 points in the geosite”, he said. The extension of the MoU is being processed and should be done by the end of the month so that improve-

ments can be made faster. Division Head of Tourism Object Development, I Wayan Bona, said that in addition to the geosite, the MoU regarding the Penelokan and some areas around Suter village are also being extended. “Essentially, the MoU is only made with the BKSDA area starting from Penelokan to Suter”, he explained. with the MoU the improvements can be made more quickly and more easily. The march came after three opposition parties introduced a bill for parliament to impeach Park, who could become the first democratically elected leader to leave office early in disgrace. has apologised to the nation. The three opposition parties said on Friday they will hold a parliamentary impeachment vote on Park on Dec. 9. A bill once introduced is reviewed by the parliament secretariat, a formality, before it can be reported to the plenary session. The bill was expected to go to the session on Thursday. The three opposition parties have enough members to bring the impeachment but will need 28 members from Park’s Saenuri Party to bring the vote to the two-thirds majority required to pass the bill. It was not clear whether enough Saenuri members would support the vote. BEIJING - China lodged a diplomatic protest on Saturday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, but blamed the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own for the “petty” move. The 10-minute telephone call with Taiwan’s leadership was the first by a U.S. president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of “one China”. China’s Foreign Ministry said it had lodged “stern representations” with what it called the “relevant U.S. side”, urging the careful handling of the Taiwan issue to avoid any unnecessary disturbances in ties. “The one China principle is the political basis of the China-U.S. relationship,” it said. The wording implied the protest had gone to the Trump camp, but the ministry provided no explanation. Speaking earlier, hours after Friday’s telephone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointedly blamed Taiwan for the exchange, rather than Trump, a billionaire businessman with little foreign policy experience. “This is just the Taiwan side engaging in a petty action, and cannot change the ‘one China’

U.S. jobless rate falls to 9-year low, payrolls rise

WASHINGTON - The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a nine-year low of 4.6 percent in November, as employers added another 178,000 jobs, making it almost certain that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this month. The unemployment rate hit its lowest level since August 2007 because more people found work but also because the labor force shrank as more people retired, lowering the number of working-age people in the labor force to 62.7 percent. U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 178,000 jobs last month after increasing by 142,000 in October, the Labor Department said on Friday. Economists had forecast payrolls rising by 175,000 last month and the unemployment rate remaining unchanged at 4.9 percent. “The decline in the unemployment rate and the unambiguous decrease in labor market slack are likely to place further upward pressure on inflation. This report easily clears the bar for a December rate hike,” said Michael Gapen, chief economist at Barclays in New York. Wages slipped for the first time

Economists partially blamed the drop in average hourly earnings on a calendar quirk, which they expect Fed officials will overlook at their Dec. 13-14 policy meeting. Italy votes in referendum with PM Renzi’s future at stake

ROME - Italians vote on Sunday in a referendum on constitutional reform which will decide the political future of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who has promised to resign if he loses. Financial markets and Europe’s politicians fear victory for the opposition ‘No’ camp could trigger political instability and renewed turmoil for Italy’s battered banks, pushing the euro zone towards a fresh crisis. Polls open at 7 a.m. (0600 GMT), with about 51 million Italians eligible to vote on Renzi’s plan to drastically reduce the role of the upper house Senate and claw back powers from regional authorities. With all the opposition parties lined up against the reform, a victory for Renzi would be a surprise and represent an enormous personal triumph for Italy’s youngest prime minister who often appeared to be fighting the campaign singlehanded. All surveys published in the month before a blackout was imposed on Nov. 18 put the ‘No’ camp ahead. Private polls have continued to be conducted in the last two weeks and bookmakers say ‘No’ remains the clear favourite to win. However, in the final days of frenetic campaigning Renzi insisted the public mood was changing,

focusing his attention on the millions of Italians who said they were undecided. Pippo Nicosia, a stall-holder at Campo dei Fiori market in central Rome, said he would vote ‘Yes’ but had no doubt about the result. “’No’ will win, everything will collapse so we might as well all go on holiday,” he said. Turnout, expected at between 50 and 60 percent, could be crucial. Pollsters say lower participation could favour Renzi, as hostility to his reform is strongest among young voters and those in the poor south, segments of the population that often don’t bother to vote. A turnout above 60 percent could also make the result more unpredictable, as it would suggest many voters who said they planned to abstain ended up going to the polls. With bookmakers’ odds suggesting a roughly 75 percent chance of a win for ‘No’, speculation is rife on what Renzi will do in the event of defeat.

He is widely expected to resign and has said he will play no role in any unelected, “technical” government, which President Sergio Mattarella may try to put in place. Some of his allies have urged him to stay in power regardless of the result. The result of exit polls will be announced as soon as voting ends and the count begins at 11 p.m. After around 30 minutes, the first projections of the result will be announced on the basis of actual votes counted. If the result is not close, the winner could be clear after the second projection, some time between midnight and 1 a.m. (0000 GMT). In a very close race, the winner may not be known until the count is completed, probably between 2 and 3 a.m. Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan sought to calm nervous markets on Friday, saying there was “no risk of a financial earthquake” if ‘No’ wins, though there may be “48 hours of turbulence”. Market jitters have concentrated on Italy’s banks, saddled with 360 billion euros ($380 billion) of bad loans, and most specifically on Monte Dei Paschi di Siena, its oldest and third largest lender. California warehouse fire kills at least nine at dance party OAKLAND - A fire that roared through a warehouse dance party in Oakland, California, killed more than nine people and left at least two dozen others missing and feared dead inside the gutted building, officials said on Saturday, as anguished friends and relatives awaited word of their fate. The cause of the blaze and precise number of casualties remained undetermined hours after flames engulfed the two-story, structure that occupied about half a city block and housed a cluttered warren of artists’ studios, craft booths, antiques and furniture. The blaze started at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday in the city’s Fruitvale district, a mostly Latino, blue-collar area that is also home to many artists living and working in converted lofts. Oakland and Alameda County officials said they expected to find more victims once the burned-out ruins of the building were fully shored up and recovery crews were able to safely comb through the structure’s charred interior. City Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed, said the blaze marked the worst single-structure fire she had seen in her career. The diving here is on 500M wide coral-covered banks or mounds that go from the sand floor, at around 25M, up to about 6M from the surface. No currents to speak of and visibility is usually good, but varies quite a bit due to shallowness (wave action stirring up the bottom, run-off after rain). The coral cover was very badly affected by coralbleaching after El Nino in 1998. Apr-Oct gives good conditions in Pemuteran but during the NW monsoon (Dec-Mar) conditions are usually poor (Jan and Feb is v wavy). Camp Nou far from a safe haven for Barcelona this season

MADRID — Playing at Camp Nou hasn’t always been a pleasant experience for Barcelona this season. The Catalan club is used to thriving at the stadium no matter the opponent, but Saturday’s heartbreaking draw against rival Real Madrid in the Spanish league was just the latest disappointing setback at home for the two-time defending champions. The late equalizer by Madrid defender Sergio Ramos handed Barcelona its third consecutive draw, and second in a row at Camp Nou. In seven home league matches this season, it won only three times and endured an embarrassing 2-1 loss to promoted Alaves in the third round. “We are losing more points than usual at home,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “We are lacking strength at Camp Nou.” Saturday’s draw kept Barcelona six points behind leader Madrid after 14 rounds. The win would have cut the rival’s lead to three points and put the Catalan club right back in the title hunt. “We have to improve, especially at home,” Luis Enrique said. “We have to improve our numbers, be-

cause when playing in our stadium we are far from where we need to be if we want to win the league.” Victory against Madrid also would have helped re-establish the team’s confidence after an unusual sequence of disappointing results. Barcelona has won only two of its last seven matches in all competitions — 2-0 at Celtic in the Champions League and 2-1 at Sevilla in the Spanish league. Among the setbacks was a 1-1 draw against third-division club Hercules in the Copa del Rey, when Luis Enrique rested his regular starters. The team improved significantly on Saturday after the star midfielder entered the match in the second half. “Despite what happened in the end, we played well enough to win,” Iniesta said. “We played a great match.” Barcelona’s next home game is Tuesday against German side Borussia Moenchengladbach in the final round of the group stage of the Champions League. Sanchez rapid hat trick as Arsenal thrashes West Ham 5-1

LONDON — Alexis Sanchez produced a stunning second-half hat trick in 15 minutes as Arsenal cruised to a 5-1 victory over struggling West Ham on Saturday in the Premier League. Sanchez’s hat trick, along with goals from Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, ensured Arsene Wenger’s side kept in touch with league leaders Chelsea. Saturday’s haul saw Sanchez tie Diego Costa as the top scorer in the league with 11 goals this season. Sanchez has thrived since switching from the left wing to center forward at the beginning of the campaign. “He has all the ingredients to be a top-class striker and showed that again today,” Wenger said. “He’s quick, he can dribble, has a short back-lift and a killer instinct.” For Wenger, it was “a strong team performance with very few weak periods - the only regret was that we didn’t take our chances in the first half.” A fifth straight league match without victory will increase the pressure on West Ham manager Slaven Bilic, but his side’s lack of intensity against a London rival appeared to annoy him even more than the result. “Somewhere along the line we lost intensity in training, we have to bring that back, without that we can’t rely on quality,” the former Croatia manager said. “We were humiliated - I want to say sorry to the fans and everybody who has anything to do with West Ham United, because it was really

Just three minutes later Andy Carroll grabbed a consolation on his return from injury before Oxlade-Chamberlain got in on the act, curling the ball in from outside the box for 4-1. Chelsea apologises to abused former player

LONDON - English soccer club Chelsea issued a public apology to former striker Gary Johnson on Saturday for the sexual abuse he suffered as a young player and said it had been wrong to insist on a confidentiality clause when paying him compensation. Johnson, 57, said on Friday that he had been abused by former Chelsea chief scout Eddie Heath in the 1970s, receiving 50,000 pounds from the club in settlement in 2015. In a statement the club said their former player had “suffered unacceptably” and they had “no desire to hide any historic abuse we uncover from view”. Chelsea now accept the clause was “inappropriate”. “In light of what we know now about the widescale abuse in football clubs in the 1970s and 1980s, it now believes that the use of such a clause, while understandable, was inappropriate in this instance,” the club said. “We certainly have no desire to hide any historic abuse we uncover from view. Quite the opposite.” The club said that although Johnson’s solicitors had said other boys had been abused by Heath, they had not been able to identify any. The allegations of child sex abuse in English soccer from the 1970s through to the 1990s have shocked Britain. In a sign of how widespread the abuse might have been, British police said on Thursday that about 350 victims had come forward to report sexual abuse within soccer clubs and indicated the number was likely to rise. Britons are still reeling from another massive paedophile scandal involving television and radio presenter Jimmy Savile, who abused hundreds of youngsters over six decades. (rtr)

YAOUNDE — Nigeria scored late to deny Cameroon a home triumph and extend its dominance of the women’s African Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win in the final on Saturday. Desire Oparanozie’s 84th-minute goal in Yaounde gave defending champion Nigeria its 10th title in 12 tournaments. Only Equatorial Guinea in 2008 and 2012 has managed to wrestle the African soccer crown away from the Nigerian women in the last 25 years. Cameroon came into this final bristling with confidence after winning all its group games and knocking out Ghana in the semifinals, the only team to take points off Nigeria in their group. Spurred on by 40,000 home fans, who began packing into the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium five hours before kickoff, Cameroon even had the better chances in the final only to end runner-up for the fourth time — all four to Nigeria. Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 in the deciding game of the last tournament in 2014. This game was much tighter and Cameroon was more enterprising in the first half. Striker Madeleine Ngono had a chance in the 33rd but she couldn’t beat Nigerian goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan when one-on-one. Nigeria, which survived a couple more chances, was fortunate with its late winner when Ngozi Okobi’s pass rebounded off a Cameroon defender and dropped into the path of Oparanozie to score. That was a knockout blow for the Cameroon team and the home fans, which included Cameroon President Paul Biya, but the tournament overall has been a success for the country.
