‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ plans 2018 Broadway debut

LOS ANGELES - After a hit debut on London’s West End this summer, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is in talks to move to New York’s Broadway in 2018, producers said on Friday.

The play, based on author J.K. Rowling’s popular boy wizard character, is being planned for Broadway’s Lyric Theater, which will undergo a multi-million dollar revamp to house the elaborate production, the show’s producers said in a post on Rowling’s website Pottermore.com.

The Lyric Theater is one of Broadway’s largest venues, with

nearly 1,900 seats, and has housed complex theatrical productions such as “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in 2005 and “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” which ran from 2010 to 2014.

In preparation for “Cursed Child,” the Lyric Theater will be remodeled with a slightly reduced 1,500 seats, “to accommodate the dramatic look and feel” of the

“Cursed Child” is sold out at London’s Palace Theater until 2018, although more tickets are expected to be released in January.

The play is set 19 years after Rowling’s book series concluded the boy wizard’s teen years with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” in 2007.

JAKARTA — Indonesian rescuers on Sunday recovered body parts in the sea where a police plane with 13 people aboard is believed to have crashed the previous day.

The light aircraft lost contact Saturday on the way to the island of Batam, which is near Singapore, after taking off from an island off the southeast coast of Sumatra. All those aboard, including five crew and eight passengers, are feared dead, officials said.

The M28 Skytruck plane is believed to have plunged into 24-meter (79-foot) -deep waters, said National Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo. He told a news conference that remains, probably of the victims, were found in the area where villagers earlier retrieved a seat and a bag containing a cellphone and police documents. He added that an oil spill was also found in the area. TV footage showed police

Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of more than 250 million people, has been plagued by transportation accidents in recent years, from plane and train crashes to ferry sinkings.(ap)

Modern agricultural technology to boost farmers’ welfare

Farmers need to change their crops in repsonse to supply and demand

Bangli - The price of agricultural commodities, like vegetables tend to fluctuate as market demand and production are not synchronised. Farmers need to take preventitive measures by changing their crops according to demands and what other regions are already producing.

Acting Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, Ni Wayan Manik, explained that Bangli’s yields of vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes tend to be quite plentiful. However because many other regions produce these same crops, and there is not a huge demand for these crops, prices tend to plummet.

“Vegetable harvests are often more than the market demands, which is why prices drop so low”, she explained while accompanied by the Head of Food and Horticulture, I Wayan Sujana Tagel.

According to Manik, who is also an expert staff for the Regional

Secretary of Bangli, farmers need to change their cropping patterns so that different regions are not always competing with the same crops at the same time. This should be ongoing.

“Most farmers are still planting by referring to season. It needs changing and in the future must be based on business prospects.

Vegetables do not matter if planted beyond the season. But it must be balanced with good maintenance and the result will be good,” she said.

This suggestion has often been made to farmers through government coaching programs and

‘field schools’. Unfortunately, this suggestion has not received very positive responses from farmers, especially those in area of ??South Bangli. “Most farmers are still not thinking in terms of agribusiness, but we will continue to encourage them to do so”, said Manik.

Along with changing the types of crops that they plant, farmers are also reluctant to reduce the amount of chemical fertilizers that they use. This despite the fact that it has often been asserted that this leads to diminished soil fertility.

“Unfortunately, it is still hard to convince farmers to use organic fetilizers as they claim that the chemical fertilizers lead to quicker growth of their plants. This is the tendency, but long term impacts need to be considered”, she concluded. (kmb45)

SINGARAJA - Bali’s agricultural sector Bali has not given a thorough blessing to the welfare of its farmers. Often local farm products are sold far too cheaply when cpmpared to the cost of prodcution. The quantity and quality of agricultural products needs to be encouraged so that farmers in Bali can earn a living.

“There is a lot of potential for agriculture in Bali to flourish but the implementation of relevant policies has not improved the lives of farmers. Farmers still have a lot of trouble when it comes to marketing their products”, said Chairperson of the Women Farmers of the Province of Bali, Tutik Kusuma Wardhani who is also politician for the Democratic Party, Thursday (Dec. 1).

She said that the income of farmers needs to be improved in order to avoid a desperate situation. Tutik also observed that there is a lot of uncultivated land that could be taken advantage of by farmers. “Farmers have frequently been made into objects while they should in fact be subject. I do hope that there will be intensive efforts to fight for the agricultural sector.

Regional bylaws that provide incentive to farmers by lowering or eliminating taxes have been made. However, it cannot be

dammed because the population is very dense and reveneues are still oriented toward the tourism sector”, she said.

Agriculture in Bali still widely applies conventional farming techniques and farmers need to have ongoing education about modern farming techniques that need to be tailored to the needs of farmers in these changing times.

“Young people should be encouraged to get involved in the agricultural sector. Givernment policies are also needed. Now is the time to direct development in both rual and urban areas. I think it needs to start in the villages. We need to grow the rural economy and farming certainly creates job opportunities. Young people should not be forced to go the city to find work”, she explained.

By empowering Buleleng’s agricultural sector, young people who cannot find work will also be less subsebtible to falling into criminal activity. “The government’s development of the welfare of farmers needs to start by focusing on rural areas. It is important that agricultrual processing take adavantage of modern technology. We cannot continue to use old methodes. IN the past Thailand learned hot to farm from Indonesia- but now their farming is much more advanced than ours”, she added. (kmb34)

Tourist visit to Bali increases 24 percent

Gap even increasingly wider

DENPASAR — Data in the Ministry of Tourism indicate there is an increase in tourist arrivals to Bali by 24 percent.

During the period of January-September 2015, foreign tourist visit reached 2.9 million. In the same period of this year it is recorded to reach 3.6 million. However, the increasing number of foreign tourist arrival is even considered to widen the gap among the regions in Bali.

Albanian artist builds Mother Teresa’s mosaic with staples PRISTINA — An Albanian artist on Monday unveiled a portrait of Mother Teresa using staples, in a call for European countries to stop raising fences to shut their borders to refugees.

Built in less than a month, Saimir Strati unveiled the 10-square-meter (12-square-yard) mosaic portrait of Teresa, built with 1.5 million wire staples, at the National Museum of

Kosovo in the capital, Pristina.

Strati’s idea came after seeing hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees coming to Europe while diplomacy and politics failed to resolve their situation.

“Only Mother Teresa’s humanism may save them,” Strati told The Associated Press. “This is Mother Teresa’s year.”

The 50-year-old Strati decided

to unveil the portrait on Albania’s independence day. The tiny Western Balkan nation was part of the Ottoman Empire for almost five centuries until Nov. 28, 1912.

Teresa, who was recently made a saint, was born to Albanian parents.

Strati detested that some countries have erected fences to hold back refugees coming to Europe for a better life.

Teresa’s canonization by Pope Francis at the Vatican in September and the migrant crisis inspired him to create his latest mosaic.

Strati is hoping for his 10th Guinness World record in as many years for a piece of art using the most staples, following nine other mosaics using items like toothpicks, coffee beans and wine corks.

For the Teresa portrait, he used

white and brown staples readily available in many stores.

“I saw so many staples used for leaflets and papers at the G-20 summit. But those papers have yet to bring peace and a better life in this world,” he said.

Strati donated his mosaic to the Kosovo museum. On Wednesday, he will send documentation to the Guinness World Record office. (ap)

“This 24-percent increase will lead to wider gap among the regions. Adhi Ardhana asserted that the growth of tourist accommodation must be controlled. On the other

hand, the length of stay, room night of guests and the quality of visits should be improved. If these three elements have been carried out, then the impact of synergy will be felt by Balinese people.

“The increase in the number of visits in the field is also factually accompanied by a decrease in the length of stay. Indeed, it is not solely the responsibility of the government, but also of the tourism industry and synergy of Bali in a single region of tourist destination,” added this PDI-P politician.

He added with the scheme and right policies, it needs to be made a cluster concept in accordance with the function of each region.

Southern Bali, for example, is specifically intended for accommodation. Then, other regions of Bali are for tourist destination and supporting production. “Of course, it should be realized by the regions

in accordance with their respective potential where they cannot stand alone and must work together,” he concluded.

Deputy Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Sugawa Korry, said that the increase in the number of tourist visit should be thankful although it also comes with concern as a result of the increasingly widening gap. According to him, this gap occurred due to infrastructural gap between Southern Bali and other regions of Bali.

“The development of infrastructure connecting South Bali to North, East and West Bali should be accelerated. They include the shortcut of Denpasar-Singaraja and Denpasar-Gilimanuk, and if possible, the toll road between Denpasar and Singaraja as well as between Denpasar and Gilimanuk,” he said.

District govt renews MoU with BKSDA for geosite management

BANGLI- Mount Batur geosite in Kintamani is a tourist attraction owned by the local government who will extend their MoU of joint management with the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). The process is already underway and should be complete by the end of the month. A similar measure is also being carried out for the Penelokan attraction.

Head of the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Adnyana, said on Friday (Dec. 2) that the geo-

site has become an important part of toursim in Kintamani and remains an attraction for visitors so it should

continue to be well manged. Since the area is managed by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency, it is necessary to make an MoU. “The MoU has been in operation for four year and will be extended for another year and includes 21 points in the geosite”, he said.

The extension of the MoU is being processed and should be done by the end of the month so that improve-

ments can be made faster. Division Head of Tourism Object Development, I Wayan Bona, said that in addition to the geosite, the MoU regarding the Penelokan and some areas around Suter village are also being extended.

“Essentially, the MoU is only made with the BKSDA area starting from Penelokan to Suter”, he explained.

This official from Terunyan village, Kintamani, mentioned that

with the MoU the improvements can be made more quickly and more easily. The opportunity to be scrutinized by the supreme audit board (BPK) related to the certainty of the assets will be getting smaller. “Penelokan, for example, will be re-arranged in 2017. South Koreans march close to presidential Blue House demanding Park resign

SEOUL - Hundreds of thousands of South Koreans rallied in Seoul on Saturday in the sixth straight weekend of protests demanding the resignation of scandal-tainted President Park Geun-hye that took them closer than ever to the presidential Blue House.

The march came after three opposition parties introduced a bill for parliament to impeach Park, who could become the first democratically elected leader to leave office early in disgrace.

The bill, signed by 171 members of the 300-seat unicameral assembly, said Park had violated the constitution and criminal law by abusing her power in the influencepeddling scandal.

Protesters marching to within 100 metres (yards) of the Blue House called on Park to step down immediately, rejecting her third public apology and request to parliament to decide when and how she should quit.

“It’s a national disgrace that she’s still in that position. She should have already stepped down,” said Kim Jae-hwa, a 43-year-old mother from Seoul, who attended the rally with two adolescent daughters.

One held a red sign reading “Arrest Park Geun-hye”.

“I felt it was important for their education to see what democracy is,” Kim added.

Park is accused of colluding with a friend, Choi Soon-sil, who has been accused of abuse of power, to put undue pressure on conglomerates to contribute money to foundations that were set up to promote her policy initiatives.

Park has denied wrongdoing but

has apologised to the nation.

The three opposition parties said on Friday they will hold a parliamentary impeachment vote on Park on Dec. 9. A bill once introduced is reviewed by the parliament secretariat, a formality, before it can be reported to the plenary session.

The bill was expected to go to the session on Thursday.

The three opposition parties have enough members to bring the impeachment but will need 28 members from Park’s Saenuri Party to bring the vote to the two-thirds majority required to pass the bill.

It was not clear whether enough Saenuri members would support the vote.

Rally organisers estimated 500,000 people participated in Saturday’s protest, while police declined to give its own estimate but said about 20,000 police personnel were on hand. (rtr)

BEIJING - China lodged a diplomatic protest on Saturday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, but blamed the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own for the “petty” move.

The 10-minute telephone call with Taiwan’s leadership was the first by a U.S. president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of “one China”.

China’s Foreign Ministry said it had lodged “stern representations” with what it called the “relevant U.S. side”, urging the careful handling of the Taiwan issue to avoid any unnecessary disturbances in ties.

“The one China principle is the political basis of the China-U.S. relationship,” it said.

The wording implied the protest had gone to the Trump camp, but the ministry provided no explanation.

Speaking earlier, hours after Friday’s telephone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointedly blamed Taiwan for the exchange, rather than Trump, a billionaire businessman with little foreign policy experience.

“This is just the Taiwan side engaging in a petty action, and cannot change the ‘one China’

structure already formed by the international community,” Wang said at an academic forum in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying.

“I believe that it won’t change the longstanding ‘one China’ policy of the United States government.”

In comments at the same forum, Wang noted how quickly President Xi Jinping and Trump had spoken by telephone after Trump’s victory, and that Trump had praised China as a great country.

Wang said that exchange had sent “a very positive signal about the future development of SinoU.S. relations”, according to the ministry’s website. Taiwan was not mentioned in that call, according to an official Chinese transcript.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office also called the conversation a “petty” move by Taiwan that does not change the island’s status as part of China. Beijing is resolute in opposing independence for Taiwan, it added.

Trump said on Twitter that Tsai had initiated the call he had with the Taiwan president. “The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you!” he said.

Alex Huang, a spokesman for Tsai, said: “Of course both sides agreed ahead of time before making contact.” (rtr)

Venezuela says to issue bigger notes ‘very soon’ as inflation surges CARACAS- President Nicolas Maduro said on Friday Venezuela would issue higher denomination bills “very soon” as soaring inflation and a crumbling currency leave the crisis-stricken country’s largest note worth just 2 U.S. cents on the black market.

Still, the long-awaited entry of 500 and 5,000 bolivar notes will only bring a brief respite amid rapid money printing and a weakening currency.

Today 5,000 bolivars buy just over $1 on the black market, which exists because Venezuela introduced currency controls in 2003 but does not offer enough dollars to meet demand.

Venezuela is believed to have the world’s highest inflation, although no data has been published for 2016. Money supply rose 12 percent in the last two weeks while the bolivar weakened 65 percent in the last month.

U.S. jobless rate falls to 9-year low, payrolls rise

WASHINGTON - The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a nine-year low of 4.6 percent in November, as employers added another 178,000 jobs, making it almost certain that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this month.

The unemployment rate hit its lowest level since August 2007 because more people found work but also because the labor force shrank as more people retired, lowering the number of working-age people in the labor force to 62.7 percent.

U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 178,000 jobs last month after increasing by 142,000 in October, the Labor Department said on Friday.

Economists had forecast payrolls rising by 175,000 last month and the unemployment rate remaining unchanged at 4.9 percent.

“The decline in the unemployment rate and the unambiguous decrease in labor market slack are likely to place further upward pressure on inflation.

This report easily clears the bar for a December rate hike,” said Michael Gapen, chief economist at Barclays in New York.

Wages slipped for the first time

in nearly a year though after two straight months of increases. Economists partially blamed the drop in average hourly earnings on a calendar quirk, which they expect Fed officials will overlook at their Dec. 13-14 policy meeting.

Average hourly earnings fell three cents, or 0.1 percent, after rising 0.4 percent in October and gaining 0.3 percent in September.

Average hourly earnings fell for workers in mining, manufacturing and utilities in November.

Last month’s drop in wages lowered the year-on-year gain to 2.5 percent in November from October’s 2.8 percent increase, which was the largest rise in nearly 7-1/2 years.

“This is likely to be a temporary setback, as further tightening in labor market conditions should increase competition for skilled

labor and support stronger wage growth,” said Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

A broad measure of unemployment, that includes people who want to work but have given up searching and those working parttime because they cannot find fulltime employment, fell two-tenths of a percentage point to 9.3 percent, the lowest level since April 2008.

After a rally of about 6.0 percent in the past three weeks, U.S. stocks ended little changed in the wake of the jobs data on Friday.

U.S. Treasury bond yields on Friday eased from multi-month highs after the worst sell-off in debt markets in nearly eight years following the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president in early November. Trump’s plan to increase infrastructure spending and cut taxes could encourage companies to boost hiring and spur an even faster pace of economic growth over the coming years, analysts said. (rtr)

Shun indulging in show of force to settle issues: VP Kalla

JAKARTA - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla (JK) has asked all parties to shun the approach of putting up a show of force to settle problems as results in a loss of time, inflicts cost and leads to mutual suspicion.

“Let us avoid a show of force to settle any problem because if such an approach were to become a routine activity, then a lot of time will be lost and much money will be spent. Besides, it will only lead to a lot of mutual suspicion. All this will burden the entire Indonesian nation,” he said here on Saturday (Dec. 3).

The vice president made the remarks while attending the inauguration of the national executive board of the Indonesian Student Regiment Alumni Association (IARMI) at the Nusantara Building IV in the Parliamentary Building compound here.

The Indonesian nation needs to strengthen unity, he noted, adding that as the worlds fourth most populous nation, Indonesia does not want to return to the era of the 1960s when the nation often saw masses being mobilized to prove who was greater.

not ban any citizen from expressing aspirations including by staging a demonstration as this is the right of every citizen in a democratic country, he reminded.

Minister Susi to make inventory of islands in Indonesia SEMARANG - The Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Susi Pudjiastuti, said here on Saturday that she would make an inventory of the islands in Indonesia, including their ownership.

“It is about ensuring some orderliness. The government needs to know the states assets, and how many islands it has now. That is our program,” she noted. She was here to receive an honorary doctorate degree from Diponegoro

University.

Minister Susi pointed out that so far, there is no inventory of the islands. “We have so far had no record regarding the exact size of each island or the potential of the islands,” she noted.

She said the inventory would also reflect the details of ownership of these islands. “It will all be put in order. How and from where the ownership was received or whether it is valid. No one is allowed to

own an island to the extent of 100 percent,” she underlined.

Communities, including individuals, may own islands but 30 percent of the ownership of the islands must remain with the state.

“An island may not be owned 100 percent by community members. A minimum of thirty percent must remain vested in the state and others. We will immediately launch this program,” she commented.(ant)

Police initially said they had detained 10 people, but national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said that an 11th suspect, Alvinida Al-Farasi, was arrested Friday. They were detained hours before the second major protest by conservative Muslims against the minority Christian governor of Jakarta. Friday’s rally drew at least 200,000 people to the city’s streets and ended peacefully.

Amar said the group planned to use the mass rally to occupy parliament and force lawmakers to hold an extraordinary session to overthrow the government of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

He said those released included Rachmawati, the daughter of Indonesia’s founding president and the younger sister of former President Megawati Sukarnoputri; retired army Gen. Kivlan Zein and activist Ratna Sarumpaet.

They were cooperating with the investigation so their continued detention wasn’t necessary, Amar told reporters. Some opposition politicians criticized the arrests.

Police also released musicianturned-politician Ahmad Dhani, who is accused of defaming Jokowi. Authorities are still holding Sri Bintang Pamungkas, a noted political prisoner under late dictator Suharto’s regime, and two people suspected of breaches of the electronic information and transactions law.

Italy votes in referendum with PM Renzi’s future at stake

ROME - Italians vote on Sunday in a referendum on constitutional reform which will decide the political future of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who has promised to resign if he loses.

Financial markets and Europe’s politicians fear victory for the opposition ‘No’ camp could trigger political instability and renewed turmoil for Italy’s battered banks, pushing the euro zone towards a fresh crisis.

Polls open at 7 a.m. (0600 GMT), with about 51 million Italians eligible to vote on Renzi’s plan to drastically reduce the role of the upper house Senate and claw back powers from regional authorities.

With all the opposition parties lined up against the reform, a victory for Renzi would be a surprise and represent an enormous personal triumph for Italy’s youngest prime minister who often appeared to be fighting the campaign singlehanded.

All surveys published in the month before a blackout was imposed on Nov. 18 put the ‘No’ camp ahead. Private polls have continued to be conducted in the last two weeks and bookmakers say ‘No’ remains the clear favourite to win.

However, in the final days of frenetic campaigning Renzi insisted the public mood was changing,

focusing his attention on the millions of Italians who said they were undecided.

Pippo Nicosia, a stall-holder at Campo dei Fiori market in central Rome, said he would vote ‘Yes’ but had no doubt about the result. “’No’ will win, everything will collapse so we might as well all go on holiday,” he said.

TURNOUT

Turnout, expected at between 50 and 60 percent, could be crucial.

Pollsters say lower participation could favour Renzi, as hostility to his reform is strongest among young voters and those in the poor south, segments of the population that often don’t bother to vote.

A turnout above 60 percent could also make the result more unpredictable, as it would suggest many voters who said they planned to abstain ended up going to the polls.

With bookmakers’ odds suggesting a roughly 75 percent chance of a win for ‘No’, speculation is rife on what Renzi will do in the event of defeat.

He is widely expected to resign and has said he will play no role in any unelected, “technical” government, which President Sergio Mattarella may try to put in place.

Some of his allies have urged him to stay in power regardless of the result.

The result of exit polls will be announced as soon as voting ends and the count begins at 11 p.m.

After around 30 minutes, the first projections of the result will be announced on the basis of actual votes counted.

If the result is not close, the winner could be clear after the second projection, some time between midnight and 1 a.m. (0000 GMT).

In a very close race, the winner may not be known until the count is completed, probably between 2 and 3 a.m.

Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan sought to calm nervous markets on Friday, saying there was “no risk of a financial earthquake” if ‘No’ wins, though there may be “48 hours of turbulence”.

Market jitters have concentrated on Italy’s banks, saddled with 360 billion euros ($380 billion) of bad loans, and most specifically on Monte Dei Paschi di Siena, its oldest and third largest lender. (rtr)

California warehouse fire kills at least nine at dance party OAKLAND - A fire that roared through a warehouse dance party in Oakland, California, killed more than nine people and left at least two dozen others missing and feared dead inside the gutted building, officials said on Saturday, as anguished friends and relatives awaited word of their fate.

The cause of the blaze and precise number of casualties remained undetermined hours after flames engulfed the two-story, structure that occupied about half a city block and housed a cluttered warren of artists’ studios, craft booths, antiques and furniture.

The blaze started at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday in the city’s Fruitvale district, a mostly Latino, blue-collar area that is also home to many artists living and working in converted lofts.

Oakland and Alameda County officials said they expected to find more victims once the burned-out ruins of the building were fully shored up and recovery crews were able to safely comb through the structure’s charred interior.

City Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed, said the blaze marked the worst single-structure fire she had seen in her career. Mayor Libby Schaaf called it a “devastating scene.”

Shaken friends of the missing huddled at a nearby pub waiting for word on possible victims, while about a dozen others gathered at a neighborhood sheriff’s station seeking news.

“I don’t have high hopes,” said a woman with four friends among

the missing, declining to give her name. “We’ve just spent the night calling hospitals and listening to police scanners.

Parents and others shared contact information on a Facebook page and asked anyone with information about the missing to call.

“ANY information please!” wrote a woman looking for her son.

Nine fatalities were initially confirmed, and authorities were “expecting the worst” as they sought to account for “a couple of dozen” people who were reported missing, Sergeant Ray Kelly, a spokesman for the county sheriff, told an afternoon news conference.

He later clarified that at least two dozen people remained unaccounted for Saturday night besides the nine victims whose remains were initially found and recovered from the rubble. Those bodies were transported to the coroner’s bureau for identification.

He said an additional, unspecified number of bodies have since been spotted in the compromised structure but had not been reached.

Many of the victims were young people in their 20s or 30s, authorities said.

Drone aircraft equipped with thermal-imaging technology were sent inside the gutted structure looking for any signs of life, but none was found, Kelly said.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Hoffmann said about a dozen people survived the blaze. Kelly said “several dozen” people who had been unaccounted for earlier had been found safe. (rtr)

MONACO - Looking back at his astonishing career on the night he was named Athlete of the Year for the sixth time, Usain Bolt said his only real regret was not taking his sport more seriously at an earlier age.

“Maybe I would have been at four Olympics,” the superstar Jamaican sprinter told reporters on Friday before being crowned IAAF male Athlete of the Year again on the back of his amazing Rio de Janeiro Games sprint triple-triple in August.

Apr-Oct gives good conditions in Pemuteran but during the NW monsoon (Dec-Mar) conditions are usually poor (Jan and Feb is v wavy). FLORIDA - For a third day in a row, Tiger Woods treated his fans to a rousing start in his much anticipated return to competition but lost momentum over the closing stretch at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Saturday.

Camp Nou far from a safe haven for Barcelona this season

MADRID — Playing at Camp Nou hasn’t always been a pleasant experience for Barcelona this season.

The Catalan club is used to thriving at the stadium no matter the opponent, but Saturday’s heartbreaking draw against rival Real Madrid in the Spanish league was just the latest disappointing setback at home for the two-time defending champions.

The late equalizer by Madrid defender Sergio Ramos handed Barcelona its third consecutive draw, and second in a row at Camp Nou. In seven home league matches this season, it won only three times and endured an embarrassing 2-1 loss to promoted Alaves in the third round.

“We are losing more points than usual at home,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “We are lacking strength at Camp Nou.” Saturday’s draw kept Barcelona six points behind leader Madrid after 14 rounds. The win would have cut the rival’s lead to three points and put the Catalan club right back in the title hunt.

“We have to improve, especially at home,” Luis Enrique said. “We have to improve our numbers, be-

cause when playing in our stadium we are far from where we need to be if we want to win the league.”

Victory against Madrid also would have helped re-establish the team’s confidence after an unusual sequence of disappointing results.

Barcelona has won only two of its last seven matches in all competitions — 2-0 at Celtic in the Champions League and 2-1 at Sevilla in the Spanish league. Among the setbacks was a 1-1 draw against third-division club Hercules in the Copa del Rey, when Luis Enrique rested his regular starters.

The other home draws by Barcelona this season were against Malaga (0-0) and Atletico Madrid (1-1). The victories came against Real Betis (6-2), Deportivo La Coruna (4-0) and Granada (1-0), all teams that are near the bottom of the Spanish league standings.

The draw against Madrid felt even more disappointing considering that Barcelona played well in the second half and had two great chances to put the game away, first

through Neymar and then Lionel Messi. Both missed from close range.

“This can happen when you don’t seal the victory when you have a chance,” Barcelona forward Luis Suarez said. “We have to find a way to show our strength when playing at home and keep putting pressure on Madrid.”

There is some reason for optimism thanks to the successful return of Andres Iniesta, who had been sidelined for more than a month because of a knee injury.

The team improved significantly on Saturday after the star midfielder entered the match in the second half.

“Despite what happened in the end, we played well enough to win,” Iniesta said. “We played a great match.”

Barcelona’s next home game is Tuesday against German side Borussia Moenchengladbach in the final round of the group stage of the Champions League. Barcelona has already secured first place in Group C, which also has Manchester City and Celtic. Its next Spanish league game is at Osasuna on Saturday. (ap)

LONDON — Alexis Sanchez produced a stunning second-half hat trick in 15 minutes as Arsenal cruised to a 5-1 victory over struggling West Ham on Saturday in the Premier League. Chelsea apologises to abused former player

LONDON - English soccer club Chelsea issued a public apology to former striker Gary Johnson on Saturday for the sexual abuse he suffered as a young player and said it had been wrong to insist on a confidentiality clause when paying him compensation.

Johnson, 57, said on Friday that he had been abused by former Chelsea chief scout Eddie Heath in the 1970s, receiving 50,000 pounds from the club in settlement in 2015.

In a statement the club said their former player had “suffered unacceptably” and they had “no desire to hide any historic abuse we uncover from view”.

Chelsea added that an external review would establish whether they carried out a proper investigation when the allegations first surfaced.

“We certainly have no desire to hide any historic abuse we uncover from view. Quite the opposite.” The club said that although Johnson’s solicitors had said other boys had been abused by Heath, they had not been able to identify any.

The allegations of child sex abuse in English soccer from the 1970s through to the 1990s have shocked Britain.

In a sign of how widespread the abuse might have been, British police said on Thursday that about 350 victims had come forward to report sexual abuse within soccer clubs and indicated the number was likely to rise.

Britons are still reeling from another massive paedophile scandal involving television and radio presenter Jimmy Savile, who abused hundreds of youngsters over six decades. (rtr)

Desire Oparanozie’s 84th-minute goal in Yaounde gave defending champion Nigeria its 10th title in 12 tournaments. Only Equatorial Guinea in 2008 and 2012 has managed to wrestle the African soccer crown away from the Nigerian women in the last 25 years.

Cameroon came into this final bristling with confidence after winning all its group games and knocking out Ghana in the semifinals, the only team to take points off Nigeria in their group.

Spurred on by 40,000 home fans, who began packing into the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium five hours before kickoff, Cameroon even had the better chances in the final only to end runner-up for the fourth time — all four to Nigeria. Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 in the deciding game of the last tournament in 2014.

This game was much tighter and Cameroon was more enterprising in the first half. Striker Madeleine Ngono had a chance in the 33rd but she couldn’t beat Nigerian goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan when one-on-one.

Nigeria, which survived a couple more chances, was fortunate with its late winner when Ngozi Okobi’s pass rebounded off a Cameroon defender and dropped into the path of Oparanozie to score.

That was a knockout blow for the Cameroon team and the home fans, which included Cameroon President Paul Biya, but the tournament overall has been a success for the country. Boosting women’s soccer in Africa, most of the games were played in full stadiums. (ap)

I could have won more if I’d got serious - Bolt

MONACO - Looking back at his astonishing career on the night he was named Athlete of the Year for the sixth time, Usain Bolt said his only real regret was not taking his sport more seriously at an earlier age.

“Maybe I would have been at four Olympics,” the superstar Jamaican sprinter told reporters on Friday before being crowned IAAF male Athlete of the Year again on the back of his amazing Rio de Janeiro Games sprint triple-triple in August.

“The award is definitely a big deal, it proves all the hard work has paid off,” he said after Olympic 10,000 metres champion and world record holder Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia took the women’s equivalent.

FLORIDA - For a third day in a row, Tiger Woods treated his fans to a rousing start in his much anticipated return to competition but lost momentum over the closing stretch at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Saturday.

Woods, who had been sidelined for nearly 16 months due to back-related issues, birdied six of the first 11 holes while briefly closing to within two shots of the lead before bogeying 13 and 14, and ending the third round with a double bogey.

The 40-year-old Woods, the prime focus of attention in the 18-man event which he hosts at the Albany course on the island of New Providence, signed for a two-under 70 that put him a distant 11 behind runaway leader Hideki Matsuyama of Japan (65).

Italy votes in referendum with PM Renzi’s future at stake

ROME - Italians vote on Sunday in a referendum on constitutional reform which will decide the political future of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who has promised to resign if he loses.

Financial markets and Europe’s politicians fear victory for the opposition ‘No’ camp could trigger political instability and renewed turmoil for Italy’s battered banks, pushing the euro zone towards a fresh crisis.

Polls open at 7 a.m. (0600 GMT), with about 51 million Italians eligible to vote on Renzi’s plan to drastically reduce the role of the upper house Senate and claw back powers from regional authorities.

With all the opposition parties lined up against the reform, a victory for Renzi would be a surprise and represent an enormous personal triumph for Italy’s youngest prime minister who often appeared to be fighting the campaign singlehanded.

All surveys published in the month before a blackout was imposed on Nov. 18 put the ‘No’ camp ahead. Private polls have continued to be conducted in the last two weeks and bookmakers say ‘No’ remains the clear favourite to win.

However, in the final days of frenetic campaigning Renzi insisted the public mood was changing,

focusing his attention on the millions of Italians who said they were undecided.

Pippo Nicosia, a stall-holder at Campo dei Fiori market in central Rome, said he would vote ‘Yes’ but had no doubt about the result. “’No’ will win, everything will collapse so we might as well all go on holiday,” he said.

TURNOUT

Turnout, expected at between 50 and 60 percent, could be crucial.

Pollsters say lower participation could favour Renzi, as hostility to his reform is strongest among young voters and those in the poor south, segments of the population that often don’t bother to vote.

A turnout above 60 percent could also make the result more unpredictable, as it would suggest many voters who said they planned to abstain ended up going to the polls.

With bookmakers’ odds suggesting a roughly 75 percent chance of a win for ‘No’, speculation is rife on what Renzi will do in the event of defeat.

He is widely expected to resign and has said he will play no role in any unelected, “technical” government, which President Sergio Mattarella may try to put in place.

Some of his allies have urged him to stay in power regardless of the result.

The result of exit polls will be announced as soon as voting ends and the count begins at 11 p.m.

After around 30 minutes, the first projections of the result will be announced on the basis of actual votes counted.

If the result is not close, the winner could be clear after the second projection, some time between midnight and 1 a.m. (0000 GMT).

In a very close race, the winner may not be known until the count is completed, probably between 2 and 3 a.m.

Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan sought to calm nervous markets on Friday, saying there was “no risk of a financial earthquake” if ‘No’ wins, though there may be “48 hours of turbulence”.

Market jitters have concentrated on Italy’s banks, saddled with 360 billion euros ($380 billion) of bad loans, and most specifically on Monte Dei Paschi di Siena, its oldest and third largest lender. (rtr)

California warehouse fire kills at least nine at dance party OAKLAND - A fire that roared through a warehouse dance party in Oakland, California, killed more than nine people and left at least two dozen others missing and feared dead inside the gutted building, officials said on Saturday, as anguished friends and relatives awaited word of their fate.

The cause of the blaze and precise number of casualties remained undetermined hours after flames engulfed the two-story, structure that occupied about half a city block and housed a cluttered warren of artists’ studios, craft booths, antiques and furniture.

The blaze started at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday in the city’s Fruitvale district, a mostly Latino, blue-collar area that is also home to many artists living and working in converted lofts.

Oakland and Alameda County officials said they expected to find more victims once the burned-out ruins of the building were fully shored up and recovery crews were able to safely comb through the structure’s charred interior.

City Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed, said the blaze marked the worst single-structure fire she had seen in her career. Mayor Libby Schaaf called it a “devastating scene.”

Shaken friends of the missing huddled at a nearby pub waiting for word on possible victims, while about a dozen others gathered at a neighborhood sheriff’s station seeking news.

“I don’t have high hopes,” said a woman with four friends among

the missing, declining to give her name. “We’ve just spent the night calling hospitals and listening to police scanners.

Parents and others shared contact information on a Facebook page and asked anyone with information about the missing to call.

“ANY information please!” wrote a woman looking for her son.

Nine fatalities were initially confirmed, and authorities were “expecting the worst” as they sought to account for “a couple of dozen” people who were reported missing, Sergeant Ray Kelly, a spokesman for the county sheriff, told an afternoon news conference.

He later clarified that at least two dozen people remained unaccounted for Saturday night besides the nine victims whose remains were initially found and recovered from the rubble. Those bodies were transported to the coroner’s bureau for identification.

He said an additional, unspecified number of bodies have since been spotted in the compromised structure but had not been reached.

Many of the victims were young people in their 20s or 30s, authorities said.

Drone aircraft equipped with thermal-imaging technology were sent inside the gutted structure looking for any signs of life, but none was found, Kelly said.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Hoffmann said about a dozen people survived the blaze. Kelly said “several dozen” people who had been unaccounted for earlier had been found safe. (rtr)

Venezuela says to issue bigger notes ‘very soon’ as inflation surges CARACAS- President Nicolas Maduro said on Friday Venezuela would issue higher denomination bills “very soon” as soaring inflation and a crumbling currency leave the crisis-stricken country’s largest note worth just 2 U.S. cents on the black market.

Still, the long-awaited entry of 500 and 5,000 bolivar notes will only bring a brief respite amid rapid money printing and a weakening currency.

Today 5,000 bolivars buy just over $1 on the black market, which exists because Venezuela introduced currency controls in 2003 but does not offer enough dollars to meet demand.

Venezuela is believed to have the world’s highest inflation, although no data has been published for 2016. Money supply rose 12 percent in the last two weeks while the bolivar weakened 65 percent in the last month.

U.S. jobless rate falls to 9-year low, payrolls rise

WASHINGTON - The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a nine-year low of 4.6 percent in November, as employers added another 178,000 jobs, making it almost certain that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this month.

The unemployment rate hit its lowest level since August 2007 because more people found work but also because the labor force shrank as more people retired, lowering the number of working-age people in the labor force to 62.7 percent.

U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 178,000 jobs last month after increasing by 142,000 in October, the Labor Department said on Friday.

Economists had forecast payrolls rising by 175,000 last month and the unemployment rate remaining unchanged at 4.9 percent.

“The decline in the unemployment rate and the unambiguous decrease in labor market slack are likely to place further upward pressure on inflation.

This report easily clears the bar for a December rate hike,” said Michael Gapen, chief economist at Barclays in New York.

Wages slipped for the first time

in nearly a year though after two straight months of increases. Economists partially blamed the drop in average hourly earnings on a calendar quirk, which they expect Fed officials will overlook at their Dec. 13-14 policy meeting.

Average hourly earnings fell three cents, or 0.1 percent, after rising 0.4 percent in October and gaining 0.3 percent in September.

Average hourly earnings fell for workers in mining, manufacturing and utilities in November.

Last month’s drop in wages lowered the year-on-year gain to 2.5 percent in November from October’s 2.8 percent increase, which was the largest rise in nearly 7-1/2 years.

“This is likely to be a temporary setback, as further tightening in labor market conditions should increase competition for skilled

labor and support stronger wage growth,” said Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

A broad measure of unemployment, that includes people who want to work but have given up searching and those working parttime because they cannot find fulltime employment, fell two-tenths of a percentage point to 9.3 percent, the lowest level since April 2008.

After a rally of about 6.0 percent in the past three weeks, U.S. stocks ended little changed in the wake of the jobs data on Friday.

U.S. Treasury bond yields on Friday eased from multi-month highs after the worst sell-off in debt markets in nearly eight years following the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president in early November. Trump’s plan to increase infrastructure spending and cut taxes could encourage companies to boost hiring and spur an even faster pace of economic growth over the coming years, analysts said. (rtr)

JAKARTA - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla (JK) has asked all parties to shun the approach of putting up a show of force to settle problems as results in a loss of time, inflicts cost and leads to mutual suspicion.

“Let us avoid a show of force to settle any problem because if such an approach were to become a routine activity, then a lot of time will be lost and much money will be spent. Besides, it will only lead to a lot of mutual suspicion. All this will burden the entire Indonesian nation,” he said here on Saturday (Dec. 3).

The vice president made the remarks while attending the inauguration of the national executive board of the Indonesian Student Regiment Alumni Association (IARMI) at the Nusantara Building IV in the Parliamentary Building compound here.

The Indonesian nation needs to strengthen unity, he noted, adding that as the worlds fourth most populous nation, Indonesia does not want to return to the era of the 1960s when the nation often saw masses being mobilized to prove who was greater.

After all, the government does

not ban any citizen from expressing aspirations including by staging a demonstration as this is the right of every citizen in a democratic country, he reminded.

Minister Susi to make inventory of islands in Indonesia SEMARANG - The Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Susi Pudjiastuti, said here on Saturday that she would make an inventory of the islands in Indonesia, including their ownership.

“It is about ensuring some orderliness. The government needs to know the states assets, and how many islands it has now. That is our program,” she noted. She was here to receive an honorary doctorate degree from Diponegoro

University.

Minister Susi pointed out that so far, there is no inventory of the islands. “We have so far had no record regarding the exact size of each island or the potential of the islands,” she noted.

She said the inventory would also reflect the details of ownership of these islands. “It will all be put in order. How and from where the ownership was received or whether it is valid. No one is allowed to

own an island to the extent of 100 percent,” she underlined.

Communities, including individuals, may own islands but 30 percent of the ownership of the islands must remain with the state.

“An island may not be owned 100 percent by community members. A minimum of thirty percent must remain vested in the state and others. We will immediately launch this program,” she commented.(ant)

Police initially said they had detained 10 people, but national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said that an 11th suspect, Alvinida Al-Farasi, was arrested Friday. They were detained hours before the second major protest by conservative Muslims against the minority Christian governor of Jakarta. Friday’s rally drew at least 200,000 people to the city’s streets and ended peacefully.

Amar said the group planned to use the mass rally to occupy parliament and force lawmakers to hold an extraordinary session to overthrow the government of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

He said those released included Rachmawati, the daughter of Indonesia’s founding president and the younger sister of former President Megawati Sukarnoputri; retired army Gen. Kivlan Zein and activist Ratna Sarumpaet.

They were cooperating with the investigation so their continued detention wasn’t necessary, Amar told reporters. Some opposition politicians criticized the arrests.

ments can be made faster. Division Head of Tourism Object Development, I Wayan Bona, said that in addition to the geosite, the MoU regarding the Penelokan and some areas around Suter village are also being extended.

“Essentially, the MoU is only made with the BKSDA area starting from Penelokan to Suter”, he explained.

South Koreans march close to presidential Blue House demanding Park resign

SEOUL - Hundreds of thousands of South Koreans rallied in Seoul on Saturday in the sixth straight weekend of protests demanding the resignation of scandal-tainted President Park Geun-hye that took them closer than ever to the presidential Blue House.

The march came after three opposition parties introduced a bill for parliament to impeach Park, who could become the first democratically elected leader to leave office early in disgrace.

The bill, signed by 171 members of the 300-seat unicameral assembly, said Park had violated the constitution and criminal law by abusing her power in the influencepeddling scandal.

Protesters marching to within 100 metres (yards) of the Blue House called on Park to step down immediately, rejecting her third public apology and request to parliament to decide when and how she should quit.

“It’s a national disgrace that she’s still in that position. She should have already stepped down,” said Kim Jae-hwa, a 43-year-old mother from Seoul, who attended the rally with two adolescent daughters.

One held a red sign reading “Arrest Park Geun-hye”.

“I felt it was important for their education to see what democracy is,” Kim added.

Park is accused of colluding with a friend, Choi Soon-sil, who has been accused of abuse of power, to put undue pressure on conglomerates to contribute money to foundations that were set up to promote her policy initiatives.

Park has denied wrongdoing but

has apologised to the nation.

The three opposition parties said on Friday they will hold a parliamentary impeachment vote on Park on Dec. 9. A bill once introduced is reviewed by the parliament secretariat, a formality, before it can be reported to the plenary session.

The bill was expected to go to the session on Thursday.

The three opposition parties have enough members to bring the impeachment but will need 28 members from Park’s Saenuri Party to bring the vote to the two-thirds majority required to pass the bill.

It was not clear whether enough Saenuri members would support the vote.

Rally organisers estimated 500,000 people participated in Saturday’s protest, while police declined to give its own estimate but said about 20,000 police personnel were on hand. (rtr)

BEIJING - China lodged a diplomatic protest on Saturday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, but blamed the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own for the “petty” move.

The 10-minute telephone call with Taiwan’s leadership was the first by a U.S. president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of “one China”.

China’s Foreign Ministry said it had lodged “stern representations” with what it called the “relevant U.S. side”, urging the careful handling of the Taiwan issue to avoid any unnecessary disturbances in ties.

“The one China principle is the political basis of the China-U.S. relationship,” it said.

The wording implied the protest had gone to the Trump camp, but the ministry provided no explanation.

Speaking earlier, hours after Friday’s telephone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointedly blamed Taiwan for the exchange, rather than Trump, a billionaire businessman with little foreign policy experience.

“This is just the Taiwan side engaging in a petty action, and cannot change the ‘one China’

structure already formed by the international community,” Wang said at an academic forum in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying.

“I believe that it won’t change the longstanding ‘one China’ policy of the United States government.”

In comments at the same forum, Wang noted how quickly President Xi Jinping and Trump had spoken by telephone after Trump’s victory, and that Trump had praised China as a great country.

Wang said that exchange had sent “a very positive signal about the future development of SinoU.S. relations”, according to the ministry’s website. Taiwan was not mentioned in that call, according to an official Chinese transcript.

Tourist visit to Bali increases 24 percent

Gap even increasingly wider

DENPASAR — Data in the Ministry of Tourism indicate there is an increase in tourist arrivals to Bali by 24 percent.

During the period of January-September 2015, foreign tourist visit reached 2.9 million. In the same period of this year it is recorded to reach 3.6 million. However, the increasing number of foreign tourist arrival is even considered to widen the gap among the regions in Bali.

Albanian artist builds Mother Teresa’s mosaic with staples PRISTINA — An Albanian artist on Monday unveiled a portrait of Mother Teresa using staples, in a call for European countries to stop raising fences to shut their borders to refugees.

Built in less than a month, Saimir Strati unveiled the 10-square-meter (12-square-yard) mosaic portrait of Teresa, built with 1.5 million wire staples, at the National Museum of

Kosovo in the capital, Pristina.

Strati’s idea came after seeing hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees coming to Europe while diplomacy and politics failed to resolve their situation.

“Only Mother Teresa’s humanism may save them,” Strati told The Associated Press. “This is Mother Teresa’s year.”

The 50-year-old Strati decided

to unveil the portrait on Albania’s independence day. The tiny Western Balkan nation was part of the Ottoman Empire for almost five centuries until Nov. 28, 1912.

Teresa, who was recently made a saint, was born to Albanian parents.

Strati detested that some countries have erected fences to hold back refugees coming to Europe for a better life.

Teresa’s canonization by Pope Francis at the Vatican in September and the migrant crisis inspired him to create his latest mosaic.

Strati is hoping for his 10th Guinness World record in as many years for a piece of art using the most staples, following nine other mosaics using items like toothpicks, coffee beans and wine corks.

For the Teresa portrait, he used

white and brown staples readily available in many stores.

“I saw so many staples used for leaflets and papers at the G-20 summit. But those papers have yet to bring peace and a better life in this world,” he said.

Strati donated his mosaic to the Kosovo museum. On Wednesday, he will send documentation to the Guinness World Record office. (ap)

Tourist visit indicates pseudo-increase

DENPASAR — The increase in tourist visit, especially foreign tourists, is awaited by the Bali tourism industry. However, the increase only is not enough, especially with the fact there is no control against the accommodation investment.

hand, the length of stay, room night of guests and the quality of visits should be improved. If these three elements have been carried out, then the impact of synergy will be felt by Balinese people.

“The increase in the number of visits in the field is also factually accompanied by a decrease in the length of stay. Indeed, it is not solely the responsibility of the government, but also of the tourism industry and synergy of Bali in a single region of tourist destination,” added this PDI-P politician.

He added with the scheme and right policies, it needs to be made a cluster concept in accordance with the function of each region.

Southern Bali, for example, is specifically intended for accommodation. Then, other regions of Bali are for tourist destination and supporting production. “Of course, it should be realized by the regions

in accordance with their respective potential where they cannot stand alone and must work together,” he concluded.

Deputy Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Sugawa Korry, said that the increase in the number of tourist visit should be thankful although it also comes with concern as a result of the increasingly widening gap. According to him, this gap occurred due to infrastructural gap between Southern Bali and other regions of Bali.

“The development of infrastructure connecting South Bali to North, East and West Bali should be accelerated. They include the shortcut of Denpasar-Singaraja and Denpasar-Gilimanuk, and if possible, the toll road between Denpasar and Singaraja as well as between Denpasar and Gilimanuk,” he said.

Modern agricultural technology to boost farmers’ welfare

Farmers need to change their crops in repsonse to supply and demand

Bangli - The price of agricultural commodities, like vegetables tend to fluctuate as market demand and production are not synchronised. Farmers need to take preventitive measures by changing their crops according to demands and what other regions are already producing.

Acting Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, Ni Wayan Manik, explained that Bangli’s yields of vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes tend to be quite plentiful. However because many other regions produce these same crops, and there is not a huge demand for these crops, prices tend to plummet.

“Vegetable harvests are often more than the market demands, which is why prices drop so low”, she explained while accompanied by the Head of Food and Horticulture, I Wayan Sujana Tagel.

According to Manik, who is also an expert staff for the Regional

Secretary of Bangli, farmers need to change their cropping patterns so that different regions are not always competing with the same crops at the same time. This should be ongoing.

“Most farmers are still planting by referring to season. It needs changing and in the future must be based on business prospects.

Vegetables do not matter if planted beyond the season. But it must be balanced with good maintenance and the result will be good,” she said.

This suggestion has often been made to farmers through government coaching programs and

‘field schools’. Unfortunately, this suggestion has not received very positive responses from farmers, especially those in area of ??South Bangli. “Most farmers are still not thinking in terms of agribusiness, but we will continue to encourage them to do so”, said Manik.

Along with changing the types of crops that they plant, farmers are also reluctant to reduce the amount of chemical fertilizers that they use. This despite the fact that it has often been asserted that this leads to diminished soil fertility.

“Unfortunately, it is still hard to convince farmers to use organic fetilizers as they claim that the chemical fertilizers lead to quicker growth of their plants. This is the tendency, but long term impacts need to be considered”, she concluded. (kmb45)

SINGARAJA - Bali’s agricultural sector Bali has not given a thorough blessing to the welfare of its farmers. Often local farm products are sold far too cheaply when cpmpared to the cost of prodcution. The quantity and quality of agricultural products needs to be encouraged so that farmers in Bali can earn a living.

“There is a lot of potential for agriculture in Bali to flourish but the implementation of relevant policies has not improved the lives of farmers. Farmers still have a lot of trouble when it comes to marketing their products”, said Chairperson of the Women Farmers of the Province of Bali, Tutik Kusuma Wardhani who is also politician for the Democratic Party, Thursday (Dec. 1).

She said that the income of farmers needs to be improved in order to avoid a desperate situation. Tutik also observed that there is a lot of uncultivated land that could be taken advantage of by farmers. “Farmers have frequently been made into objects while they should in fact be subject. I do hope that there will be intensive efforts to fight for the agricultural sector.

Regional bylaws that provide incentive to farmers by lowering or eliminating taxes have been made. However, it cannot be

dammed because the population is very dense and reveneues are still oriented toward the tourism sector”, she said.

Agriculture in Bali still widely applies conventional farming techniques and farmers need to have ongoing education about modern farming techniques that need to be tailored to the needs of farmers in these changing times.

“Young people should be encouraged to get involved in the agricultural sector. Givernment policies are also needed. Now is the time to direct development in both rual and urban areas. I think it needs to start in the villages. We need to grow the rural economy and farming certainly creates job opportunities. Young people should not be forced to go the city to find work”, she explained.

By empowering Buleleng’s agricultural sector, young people who cannot find work will also be less subsebtible to falling into criminal activity. “The government’s development of the welfare of farmers needs to start by focusing on rural areas. It is important that agricultrual processing take adavantage of modern technology. We cannot continue to use old methodes. IN the past Thailand learned hot to farm from Indonesia- but now their farming is much more advanced than ours”, she added. (kmb34)

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ plans 2018 Broadway debut

LOS ANGELES - After a hit debut on London’s West End this summer, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is in talks to move to New York’s Broadway in 2018, producers said on Friday.

The play, based on author J.K. Rowling’s popular boy wizard character, is being planned for Broadway’s Lyric Theater, which will undergo a multi-million dollar revamp to house the elaborate production, the show’s producers said in a post on Rowling’s website Pottermore.com.

The Lyric Theater is one of Broadway’s largest venues, with

nearly 1,900 seats, and has housed complex theatrical productions such as “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in 2005 and “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” which ran from 2010 to 2014.

In preparation for “Cursed Child,” the Lyric Theater will be remodeled with a slightly reduced 1,500 seats, “to accommodate the dramatic look and feel” of the

JAKARTA — Indonesian rescuers on Sunday recovered body parts in the sea where a police plane with 13 people aboard is believed to have crashed the previous day.

The light aircraft lost contact Saturday on the way to the island of Batam, which is near Singapore, after taking off from an island off the southeast coast of Sumatra. All those aboard, including five crew and eight passengers, are feared dead, officials said.

The M28 Skytruck plane is believed to have plunged into 24-meter (79-foot) -deep waters, said National Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo. He told a news conference that remains, probably of the victims, were found in the area where villagers earlier retrieved a seat and a bag containing a cellphone and police documents. He added that an oil spill was also found in the area. TV footage showed police
