Julia Roberts says scope of #MeToo revelations ‘shocking’
LOS ANGELES - Hollywood star Julia Roberts has revealed the scope of the #MeToo revelations is “shocking” but says she has never directly witnessed any wrongdoing in the industry. The actress, whose career spans nearly 30 years, told Sky News she has had the “good fortune” to avoid being sexually assaulted. She said: “Of course, you hear stories about it or know people that have suffered that. “I myself have the great good fortune that I have not ever been in a situation like that.
“But it is talk that goes around. I think so many things that come out of that were so shocking and the scope of it was really quite surprising.” With more than 50 films under her belt, one Academy Award, three Golden Globes and consistently impressive box office returns, she remains remarkably modest about her industry achievements. “If I had changed my name to Julia O’Roberts at the beginning I would have had a much better career”, she jokes at the Prime Video Presents event in London, referencing her love of Ireland. Her passion for the country first developed when she filmed 1996 biopic Michael Collins and she says she loves the “people, music, history and places where fairies hide”. As for getting recognised on the street, she is similarly self-effacing. “Big Mistake gets yelled at me a lot - which if you don’t know where that’s coming from you might think ‘Oh that poor lady!’”. The heckle is a reference to the famous scene in the 1990 film that made her a star, Pretty Woman. Roberts’ Hollywood prostitute - Vivian Ward - returns to the dress shop she was shamed in at the start of the film to give the snooty sales girls some of their own medicine. But despite being one of the most famous film actresses in the world, she’s about to take her first real foray into TV. Psychological thriller Homecoming, based on a 2016 podcast of the same name, sees Roberts play a caseworker at a secret government facility who is keen to return to civilian life. (net)

MUMBAI - An Indian actress who alleges she was sexually harassed on two film sets said Thursday she had received legal notices and threats of violence over her claims. Former Miss Universe contestant Tanushree Dutta said she was sexually harassed by multi-award-winning Bollywood star Nana Patekar during the filming of the romantic comedy “Horn Ok Pleassss” in 2008. Dutta first made the allegations ten years ago after walking off the set. She repeated the claim during a recent interview, also alleging that filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri had behaved inappropriately towards her during the shooting of the 2005 movie “Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets”. Patekar and Agnihotri both deny the claims. Dutta, 37, said in a statement released Thursday that said she had received legal notices from Patekar and Agnihotri. “This is the price you pay for speaking out against harassment, humiliation and injustice in India,” Dutta said.Dutta claimed she had also received “violent threats” from the fringe, far-right Hindu nationalist group Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and was the victim of a “smear campaign” on social media. “This is the age old saga of survivors in our nation,” she said. Agnihotri’s lawyer said Dutta’s allegations against the director were “absolutely false, frivolous and vexatious” and confirmed his client would sue the actress. “We have served a legal notice to initiate defamation action against her,” Nidhish Mehrotra said in a statement posted on Twitter by Agnihotri. India has yet to witness its own version of the #MeToo movement that rocked Hollywood last year but Dutta has received the backing of several high-profile stars, including Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor. Other actresses have begun to speak out about an issue almost never discussed in Indian media. (afp)

False reports claiming that another huge quake was about to hit Sulawesi island -- which is already reeling from last Friday’s double tragedy that has killed over 1,400 people -- have circulated online in recent days. Another Facebook post used a photo of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami aftermath to depict what it claimed was a scene from the seaside city of Palu. A caption read: “Those who share this post will be spared from calamities”. Setyo Wasisto, Indonesia’s national police spokesman, told Kompas TV on Thursday that
nine people had been arrested on suspicion of spreading false news. Most of the contents were posted to Facebook, he added. Indonesia has a long-standing problem with internet hoaxes, and fake news is never far behind after a disaster. The country has one of the world’s biggest online audiences, with a population of 260 million people and one of the world’s highest social media usage rates. “If anyone predicts another massive earthquake or tsunami, it’s fake news,” said Daryono, head
of the geophysics agency’s quake and tsunami information centre, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “If you spread this kind of information, you’re just going to create more suffering and confusion for people.” Teams from Indonesia’s communications ministry and disaster agency have taken to Twitter and other social media to debunk fake claims in recent days. Communication and Information Ministry spokesman Ferdinandus Setu told AFP a 70-strong team was working 24 hours a day on fake reports about disaster, including a claim that Palu’s mayor was among the dead. “We’ve confirmed that the mayor is still alive and healthy,” Setu said.
- Rampant hoaxes Once the team debunks the contents, the ministry announces the findings through regular press releases and also gives the findings to the police. The disaster agency’s efforts are being fronted by spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, who has won admirers for battling to update journalists around the clock despite suffering from terminal cancer. “I apologise if I cannot respond to every question from journalists, my friends. If I was healthy, I would surely do it no matter what,” Nugroho told reporters this week, even as he continues to hold daily press briefings, take journalists’ calls and communicate on social media. Hoaxes were also rampant during a quake disaster on the island
of Lombok, next to Bali, this summer. Indonesian police have clamped down on fake news and online hate speech more broadly in recent months, ahead of next year’s presidential election. President Joko Widodo -- who has battled false internet claims that he is a communist -- inaugurated a new cyber security agency in January. Continued to page 6
