LOS ANGELES - With the help of some of pop and R&B’s biggest names, music producer DJ Khaled’s latest album “Grateful” debuted atop the weekly U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Monday.

“Grateful,” with songs such as “Shining” with Beyonce and Jay Z and “I’m the One” with Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Quavo, sold 149,000 album units, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

The Billboard 200 album chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).

Other new entries in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart this week include alt-rock group Imagine Dragons’ new album “Evolve” at No. 2, late pop star Prince’s reissued “Purple Rain” album at No. 4 and rockers 311 at No. 6 with “Mosaic.”

Last week’s chart-topper, Lorde’s “Melodrama,” dropped to No. 13 this week.

On the Digital Songs chart, which measures online single sales, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi’s summer hit “Despacito” featuring Justin Bieber continued its reign at No. 1 with another 136,000 copies sold. (rtr)

Dior fashion show celebrates 70 years of travelling spirit PARIS - French fashion house Christian Dior marked its 70th anniversary on Monday with a show staged outside the Invalides museum in Paris and inspired by its founder’s travels around the world.

On a fern-lined catwalk dotted with wooden lions and giraffes, designer Maria Grazia Chiuri presented the brand’s Autumn-Winter 2017/18 haute couture collection, revisiting the iconic “Bar” Jacket and grey skirt suits with a 1950s feel.

“Christian Dior travelled across the world since 1947. This time we made the five continents come to Paris,” Dior CEO and Chairman Sidney Toledano told Reuters after the show.

Christian Dior is one of the

world’s biggest and most famous fashion brands, worn by film legends from Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor to more recent stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman and singer Rihanna.

Chiuri was named as its first female creative director in July 2016 as Dior sought to connect with younger consumers and boost sales hit by the global luxury spending downturn and growing appetite for smaller and more local brands.

Monday’s show presented her second Haute Couture collection for Dior, which she joined from Valentino.

Toledano said his new creative director had attracted and younger clients from Asia, where demand for luxury goods is picking up, while retaining existing customers.

In France, he said, the election of President Emmanuel Macron is creating “greater confidence” and “an extremely positive spirit”.

French consumers splurged on new cars, smartphones and perfumes in May, the month Macron won the presidency. Their increased willingness to spend bodes well for growth in the second quarter, national statistics institute ISEE said last week.

Like its peers LVMH, Gucci or Hermes , Dior is benefiting from higher spending in Asia and a return of tourists to Europe.

Toledano said sales growth at Christian Dior Haute Couture and Maison Christian Dior as a whole was in the double-digits in the fourth quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017. (rtr)

Thai junta suspends new labour law, extends deadline after exodus

BANGKOK/MAHACHAI - Thailand’s junta delayed on Tuesday parts of a new labour law aimed at regulating the foreign workforce after the decree sparked panic and prompted more than 60,000 foreign workers to flee from the country. The military government, which has ruled since a 2014 coup, has invoked Article 44, a security order that gives it power to push through policy, to delay the law that imposes heavy fines on employers and employees who do not have work permits, a senior official said.

The original decree was issued in part to tackle human trafficking concerns raised by the international community, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam told reporters.

“The government had to issue this law because we are being watched by the foreign community in terms of ... human trafficking. If we don’t issue this law they will not buy our goods.

So we have to do it,” Wissanu said.

The U.S. State Department last month left Thailand on a Tier 2 Watchlist, just above the lowest ranking of Tier 3, in its annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report because it did not do enough to tackle human smuggling and trafficking. Wissanu said the government would delay

implementation of four sections of the law for six months.

He did not elaborate but the labour ministry said it would suspend parts of the law until January in order to give both workers and their employers more time to get their work permits. Thailand is a destination for many migrant workers from poorer neighbouring countries, including Myanmar and Cambodia.

Official estimates put the number of foreign workers at 3 million but rights groups say the real figure is far higher. Many work in Thailand without legal documents, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation by brokers and sometimes traffickers.

‘WORK NO THAI WANTS’ Myanmar said that on Monday, it received more than 5,000 workers returning from Thailand across their border. “Most of the workers went directly back to their home towns.

Aung Htay Win, a Myanmar labour ministry official. Migrants are predominately employed in low-skilled jobs in Thailand’s multi-billion dollar fishing sector, in agriculture, construction, manufacturing and as domestic workers.

Businesses have complained that the new regulations have caused a shortage of workers in the construction and fishing sectors. Property development and construction, which have had a stellar performance in an otherwise sluggish Thai economy, have felt the brunt of the departures.

PPDB causes chaos

Governor signs gubernatorial regulation to ‘break’ ministerial regulation

DENPASAR - The Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017 becoming the reference of the new student admission (PPDB) this year is accused of making chaos. Moreover, there is a quota or percentage set forth in four tracks of PPDB, namely 10 percent of local area, 20 percent of achievement track, 20 percent of poor, inclusion and equality track, and the regular track. In addition, Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture also reduces the number of students in a group of learners to a maximum of 36 people. Such quota is not fair to poor students, especially in senior high and vocational school.

This PPDB issue was discussed in a working meeting between the governor and the Bali House of Representatives in the parliamentary building on Monday (Jul. 3). The meeting led by Deputy Chairman of Bali House, Nyoman Sugawa Korry, was attended by all commissions.

Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House, Nyoman Parta, said the PPDB has threatened the integrity of the community let alone the local area track use maximum zoning of the subdistrict. A member of Commission IV, I Wayan Rawan Atmaja, said that PPDB in Badung is the worst occurred in South Kuta. As the PPDB rules prohibit schools to implement double shifts, consequently many prospective students of high school and vocation school cannot be accepted. Actually,

previously the schools have been accustomed to opening the morning and afternoon class.

Secretary of Commission III, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said the students with outstanding achievement at national and international level should be accepted by high school/ vocational school. However, since their family card registration is not in accordance with the school area, such excellent students finally could not be accepted. Meanwhile, a member of Commission I, I Nyoman Adnyana, said the PPDB has deviated because chief of customary village and headman are also involved.

The zoning also raises a new problem of coercion for urbanization. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017 becoming the reference of the PPDB has actually been ideal. However, it does not pay adequate attention to the field situation so that it cannot be fully implemented.

“The Education Law sets forth a 12-year compulsory education. It is impossible to achieve 12 years if limited like that.

It is a pity if poor people should be forced to attend private schools, it’s expensive. How do they want to go to school?

We have to side with our poor people,” he said.

According to Pastika, public schools would be useless if they only educate the rich and smart students. With this condition, the rich will get richer and the poor will become poorer. Conversely, the smart will get smarter, and the fool will be more stupid. This is what he calls unfair, and contrary to social justice.

“Other having high exam score (NEM), the rich can attend favorite schools or public schools financed by the state.

Conversely, since getting lower exam score, the poor should go to private and expensive schools. Ultimately, they cannot go to school,” he explained.

Pastika also requested the support from the parliament to break some of PPDB rules in the regulation of minister of education and culture. Moreover, there has been a polemic in the local area with maximum zoning of subdistrict. Schools located in densely populated area finally get a lot of protests because they cannot accommodate all the students around them. Not to mention the ration of students from outside the district/municipality only is given 5 percent of the total tracks.

“It’s strange, isn’t it? Residents from Jembrana, for instance, their son was born here. Because their father has a family card issued in Jembrana, they have to go back to Jembrana. It is not possible. Or they must move again here, so it’s not possible,” he explained.

After the meeting, Pastika immediately ordered the head of Bali education and the head of legal bureau to make a gubernatorial regulation. This gubernatorial regulation will become the legal instrument so that the principal will not get sanction when they break the regulation of minister of education and culture. The regulation planned to be signed on Tuesday (Jul. 4) allows schools to re-implement double shifts.

“Well, all this time some schools have applied double shifts. Now, it’s just operated in single shift so that many children cannot be accepted. From the first they have double shifts, so now let them apply double shifts, right?” he affirmed.

Head of the Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardhani, last Monday invited the chief of principal working group (MKKS) of the district and municipality. Chief of the MKKS was invited to a meeting to follow up the agreement between the governor and the Bali House of Representatives related to the gubernatorial regulation. It includes discussing the issues that arise in the PPDB process considering this policy will also affect the process of re-enrollment of new student candidates. “This issue will be discussed so that each district / municipality should bring their problems at hand.

Next we will have a meeting first,” she said.

Head of Legal and Human Rights Bureau of Bali Regional Secretariat, I Wayan Sugiada, said the gubernatorial regulation is not contradictory to the Law No.20/2003 on National Education System. Instead, the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture 17 is not in line with its superior law.

Besides, the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture 17 cannot become a source of law because there is no command in the Law on the National Education System for the minister to issue the rule. In this case, a lower regulation breaks higher provisions so it is automatically null and void by law.

“Secondly, the more fatal is that the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture 17 contains sanctions in the provisions of Article 30. According to Law No.12/2011 on the establishment of legislation, mentioning that the rules permitting to carry sanctions are the law, governmental regulation (PP) and local regulations. The ministerial regulation making maximally for dismissal of principal is not allowed,” he said.

Sugiada ensured that gubernatorial regulation was already signed by the governor on Tuesday. Subsequently, this gubernatorial regulation will also be submitted to central government no later than seven days after the stipulation. (kmb32)

Tourism and agriculture can go hand in hand

Robots to aid tourists, clean floors at South Korean airport

INCHEON — Robots will start roaming South Korea’s largest airport this summer, helping travelers find their boarding gates and keep its floors clean as the country prepares for its first Winter Olympics game.

Starting this month, Troika, a self-driving robot made by LG Electronics, will rove the Incheon International Airport, telling travelers how long it takes to get to boarding gates and escorting them to their flights. A jumbo cleaning robot will help cleaning staff swab the wide expanses of floors in the airport west of Seoul.

Troika, about the size of a young teen,

is equipped with a rectangular display on its front that looks like a giant smartphone screen and can show flight information, an airport map and weather data. Its partly rounded head has a flat touchscreen face that displays blinking or smiling eyes or information.

The guiding bot responds to its name.

Travelers can insert their tickets into its scanner to get flight information, and Troika will then ask if they want to be escorted to their gates, warning laggards to “Please stay closer so I can see you.”

Troika’s debut piqued the interest of many in the airport. Heads swiveled and children approached with curiosity as the 140-centi-

menter (4 foot 6 inch) robot with its white body and black screens glided through the terminal.

Robotics is gaining ground in South Korea, where many big businesses are automating factory production lines. South Korean researchers have won awards in international robot competitions. In 2015, South Korea’s Team KAIST beat the U.S. and Japan to win the DARPA Robotics Challenge with a humanoid that completed tasks without losing balance. But South Korea has been slow to introduce human-like robots or interactive robots in public places like hotels or stores, unlike its neighboring Japan where Softbank’s humanoid Pepper

Incheon International Airport Corp. believes it is the first to introduce such service-oriented robots in a South Korean public space. Another state-owned airport operator, Korea Airports Corp., which operates 15 international airports in South Korea but not Incheon airport, also has teamed up with local companies to introduce airpurifying robots to measure air quality and clean terminals.

Incheon International Airport Corp. said in a statement that it does not expect the robots to replace human workers, but just to help, especially with overnight shifts and physically demanding tasks.

Future plans include deploying robots to advise travelers about items that are banned on flights, serve food in airport lounges and carry cargo.

South Korea expects the robots to burnish its reputation as a technology leader when the country hosts the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

But its maker LG is still working out the kinks.

Troika can recognize its location inside the airport terminal and navigate around passers-by and obstacles, said Kim Hyoungrock, the chief research engineer at LG Electronics who oversaw the robot’s development.

It’s meant to be a fast learner: By July, Troika will be speaking English, Korean, Chinese and Japanese, Kim said. However the robot can only perform a few simple tasks it has been programmed to carry out.

During a recent test run it failed to recognize some voice commands, such as when Amethyst Ma of San Jose, California, asked how she and her kids could catch a bus to the city.

Still, such machines could be quite useful for overseas travelers, Ma said.

“It’s becoming common in a lot of public places so that’s why I came to it right away,” she said. “It’s a source of information, especially if we don’t speak the local language.” (rtr)

Chilean scientists produce biodiesel from microalgae

SANTIAGO - Biodiesel made from microalgae could power buses and trucks and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80 percent, Chilean scientists said, possibly curbing pollution in contaminated cities like Santiago.

Experts from the department of Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses at Chile’s Catholic University said they had grown enough algae to fragment it and extract the oil which, after removing moisture and debris, can be converted into biofuel.

“What is new about our process is the intent to produce this fuel from microalgae, which are microorganisms,” researcher Car-

los Saez told Reuters.

Most of the world’s biodiesel, which reduces dependence on petroleum, is derived from soybean oil. It can also be made from animal fat, canola or palm oil.

Saez said a main challenge going forward would be to produce a sufficient volume of microalgae. A wide variety of fresh and salt water algaes are found in Chile, a South American nation with a long Pacific coast.

The scientists are trying to improve algae growing technology to ramp up production at a low cost using limited energy, Saez said. (rtr)

DENPASAR — Implementation of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) has lasted 39 years. In terms of artistic value, the BAF has gone worldwide. Internationally, it has boomed both in terms of the dance and gamelan. However, in addition to staging the art, the SME stand should also exhibit the quality art and products. This was conveyed by I Nyoman Mudita, the owner of Mudita Gold and Silver, who is also Chairman of the Bali Silver Association, on Monday (Jul. 3).

According to him, BAF is the arena for the SMEs to show off their art products. Therefore, the SMEs should showcase their best products in the BAF really considered in terms of the art. It includes metallic craft stand. The metals having artistic and quality value are gold and silver.

However, in line with the changing of times and economic demands, since the past five years, the alpaca materials are on display in the SME stand of the BAF. Local and national market share differs from the Asian and international market. Local and national market shares prefer alpaca to silver. “So, silver has shifted to alpaca,” he said.

Actually, the alpaca is not handmade but mold. As consequence, the silversmiths who work on silver design finally reduces as having been replaced with alpaca denoting a mold product. It results in the reduction in manpower.

The presence of alpaca within the past 5 years has urged silver handicrafts having been built since 40 years ago. People that do not understand about silver and alpaca will certainly compare both prod-

ucts in terms of price. “People can own a product worth IDR 300,000 whereas the material is different,” he said.

Silver has higher price than alpaca, and the quality is better.

“Alpaca is categorized into zinc.

If it is not compatible to one’s ear, it can be irritated,” he said. The internationally recognized silver is the one with 925 content. Since the international market is rather sluggish, the material then shifts to alpaca.

Alpaca cannot be touched with the heart. In other words, after being used, the alpaca is just placed haphazardly like a worthless item.

“People will use alpaca product no more than a month, and then it will be wasted. It cannot be recycled.

While, people will put silver in a safe place like a valuable item,” he said.

He hoped that the SMEs can be further developed considering that BAF has gone international. The market also needs to be upgraded to Asia and Europe. “During this one-month event, the SMEs should be showing off the quality products and working motives,” he added.

In addition, in submitting a permit, metal entrepreneurs do not include alpaca. They even carry silver and gold. The Denpasar Art Center has great value in the eyes of the world. “So, this art is prominent.

In terms of the SMEs, the art is now no longer occupies prominent position,” he concluded.

According to him, if later on the alpaca products are displayed in the SME stand of the BAF, it should be located separately from silver and gold products, so that consumers can also distinguish between silver and alpaca. (kmb42)

Schapelle Corby’s parole papers rake in over $20k on eBay

THE parole book of convicted drug smuggler and newly created social media star Schapelle Corby has sold to an anonymous eBay bidder for $20,100.

Corby’s worn parole papers attracted 123 bids in an online auction supporting a children’s charity headed by Adam Whittington, the man at the centre of 60 Minutes’ Beirut child recovery.

The auction began last Monday at a starting price of $0.99, and reached the winning bid in one week.

All funds raised will go towards Project Rescue Children (PRC), a global child-rescue charity Mr Whittington launched in Australia following his release from a Lebanese jail.

Mr Whittington described Corby’s donation as “amazing”. “Being in her horrific position myself in the past, I know how personal this is … Thanks to Schapelle, PRC will be able to make a start in building our first ever PRC safe haven for children in Cambodia…” he posted on Instagram.

Mr Whittington previously told News Corp Australia that Corby became aware of the project through John McLeod, a PRC Director and the private security guard who arranged her Bali exit.

“Our sincere thanks to Schapelle Corby for entrusting us with something so personal which has now become the catalyst for new opportunities for children at risk,” a post on the charity’s Facebook page read.

PRC’s motto is to rescue kidnapped children from child prostitution and slavery.

Reports have also emerged that Corby may appear on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother, but her sister Mercedes has labelled the rumours a “load of crap”.

Last month, Corby’s return to Australia from Indonesia sparked a media frenzy and her Instagram account has quickly garnered almost 200,000 followers. (kmb)

Meanwhile, the total vehicles reached 2,350 units with a total of 20 ships and trips on July 1 and 17 ships trips on July 2.

He is grateful as this year’s Eid backflow ran smoothly. This happened due to cooperation of all parties involved directly in it.

The launch came days before leaders from the Group of 20 nations were due to discuss steps to rein in North Korea’s weapons programme, which it has pursued in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions.

The launch, which North Korea’s state media said was ordered and supervised by leader Kim Jong Un, sent the rocket 933 km (580 miles) reaching an altitude of 2,802 km over a flight time of 39 minutes.

North Korea has said it wants to develop a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead capable of striking the U.S. mainland.

To do that it would need an ICBM with a range of 8,000 km (4,800 miles) or more, a warhead small enough to be mounted on it and technology to ensure its stable re-entry into the atmosphere.

Some analysts said the flight details on Tuesday suggested the new missile had a range of more than 8,000 km, underscoring major advances in its programme. Other analysts said they believed its range was not so far.

pan and the United States said the missile landed in the sea in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone after being launched on a high trajectory from near an airfield northwest of the North’s capital, Pyongyang.

“The test launch was conducted at the sharpest angle possible and did not have any negative effect on neighbouring countries,” North Korea’s state media said in a statement.

The North said its missiles were now capable of striking anywhere in the world.

“It appears the test was successful. If launched on a standard angle, the missile could have a range of more than 8,000 km,” said Kim Dong-yub, a military expert at Kyungnam University’s Institute of Far Eastern Studies in Seoul.

“But we have to see more details of the new missile to determine if North Korea has acquired ICBM technology.”

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who convened a national security council meeting, said earlier the missile was believed to be an intermediate-range type, but the military was looking into the possibility it was an ICBM.

SINGAPORE - As Singapore’s parliament began the second day of a debate on Tuesday over Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s dispute with his siblings over their late father’s house, his estranged brother accused the prime minister of making false claims.

Since mid-June, Singaporeans have been riveted by a public battle between the heirs of Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s long-serving first prime minister, over whether to demolish the old family home or let the government decide whether it should become a heritage site.

Before he died in March 2015, Lee made it public that he wanted the humbly furnished home near the bustling Orchard Road shopping district to be demolished rather than turned into some kind of museum.

He stated that in his last will, part of which was released by the prime minister’s younger brother last month, but the prime minister has said there were “deeply troubling circumstances” over how the will was drawn up.

The prime minister’s brother and sister accuse him of being disingenuous and abusing his power by using a committee

to look at options for the house.

Following the accusations, Prime Minister Lee called for a special sitting of parliament to “clear the air” over an issue that some people say has tarnished Singapore’s image.

The prime minister has consistently denied the allegations, and on Monday laid out his side of the argument in a lengthy statement at the outset of a debate that was adjourned after seven hours.

But as lawmakers began gathering for the resumption on Tuesday, the prime minister’s brother, Lee Hsien Yang, posted a sharp rejoinder on his Facebook page.

“LHL (Lee Hsien Loong) has made convoluted, ultimately false claims about Lee Kuan Yew’s wishes. LHL is trying to suggest that because LKY signed some renovation plans in early 2012, he was open to preservation of the house,” Lee Hsien Yang said in the post.

The post went on to say that Lee Kuan Yew’s desire for the house to be demolished was unwavering, and that any consideration of alternatives was only because Lee Hsien Loong had led him to believe that the house at 38, Oxley Road, would be gazetted.

“If he changed his mind on demolition, he would have made it known in a clear and public fashion. He never did,” Lee Hsien Yang wrote.

Lee Hsien Yang and his sister, Lee Wei Ling, want the house to be demolished once Lee Wei Ling ceases to live there, in accordance with their father’s will.

Prime Minister Lee has also said that he personally favours honouring his father’s wishes, but he has questioned the will and argued that his father also made provision in case the house could not be knocked down due to any regulatory changes.

Prime Minister Lee has recused himself from the committee looking at the options, and said he has played no part in its discussions.

During the first day of the debate there were no revelations over the accusation that Prime Minister Lee had abused his power, or why his siblings should say that they feared the “organs of the state” could be used against them.

Lee Hsien Yang has said he and his wife, lawyer Lee Suet Fern, would be leaving Singapore because they felt closely monitored and hugely unwelcome. (rtr)

TOKYO - Japan’s top currency diplomat has been appointed for another one-year term in a regular finance ministry reshuffle, underscoring a desire to maintain policy consistency as Tokyo faces potentially tough economic talks with the United States. Masatsugu Asakawa, a 59-year-old policy veteran with policymaker contacts inside and outside of Japan, played a key role in setting up Japan’s bilateral economic dialogue with the United States, which kicked off in April.

The Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday that Asakawa will serve another year as vice finance minister for international affairs, a position he has held since July 2015. The role oversees Japan’s currency policy and

international diplomacy and includes representing Tokyo in Group of Seven (G7) and Group of 20 (G20) meetings.

Asakawa’s reappointment will help Tokyo negotiate with consisten-

cy in the second round of the bilateral economic dialogue with the United States, which is expected to be held later this year, analysts said.

U.S. President Donald Trump campaigned for office on an “Amer-

ica First” platform, saying he would boost manufacturing jobs and shrink the country’s trade deficit with the likes of Japan. Not many officials have held the post for more than two years. Those that have done so include Haruhiko Kuroda, the governor of the Bank of Japan since 2013.

Asakawa is close to Finance Minister Taro Aso, having served as his executive secretary when Aso was prime minister in 2008-2009, and as his

executive assistant when he became finance minister in 2012.

Japan has not intervened in the currency market under Asakawa’s stewardship, though he has frequently jawboned markets to stem yen spikes that risk hurting the exportreliant economy. Some analysts see Asakawa as a dark-horse candidate to replace Kuroda at the BOJ when the incumbent’s five-year term ends in April next year. (rtr)

Britain misses out as global manufacturing surges LONDON/SINGAPORE - British factories were left out of a demanddriven surge in activity across much of Asia and Europe in June, as weakness in sterling failed to translate into export growth, surveys showed. Factories in the euro zone rounded off the first half of 2017 by ramping up at the fastest rate for over six years while Asia’s tech-manufacturing economies were helped by growing global demand for electronics products.

But British manufacturing grew more slowly than anyone polled by Reuters expected as consumers faced the double-hit of accelerating inflation - caused in large part by the fall in the pound since last year’s vote to leave the EU - and slowing wage growth.

Monday’s survey suggested the supposed silver lining of a weakened pound - more competitive exports - is proving elusive and could make Bank of England officials think twice about raising interest rates.

The Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’Index (PMI) fell to 54.3 from a downwardly-revised 56.3 in May, a three-month low and below all forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists that pointed to a reading of 56.5. A reading above 50 indicates growth. “The decline in the PMI in June robustly challenges hopes that manufacturing and exports will pick up and offset the consumer spending slowdown. Today’s manufacturing report weakens the case for raising interest rates soon,” said Samuel Tombs at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

June’s manufacturing PMI for the euro zone rose to 57.4, its highest since April 2011 and up from May’s 57.0. Suggesting the bloc’s momentum will continue into the second half, new orders rose at the fastest rate since early 2011, backlogs of work increased at the fastest pace in over 13 years, raw materials were depleted and factories increased headcount at a

near-record pace.

The upturn came alongside factories increasing prices, as they have done for nine months, welcome news for policymakers at the European Central Bank who have been battling for years to get inflation back to their 2 percent target ceiling.

Inflation was a stronger-thanexpected 1.3 percent in June, official flash data showed on Friday, and while still below target, recent strong economic data meant ECB chief Mario Draghi last week raised the prospect of policy tightening. In Britain, central banker have started to signal that a first rate hike in a decade might be approaching to help curb the sharp rise in inflation.

ASIA ACCELERATION Private sector surveys of manufacturers in Asia showed factories in China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan picked up in June, driven largely by a recovery in exports. But continued declines in energy prices, which weighed on manufacturing in Indonesia and Malaysia, could hurt these two economies, while in India, sluggish domestic demand offset strong foreign demand and led to a slowdown.

And all of them, except for Japan and India, rose from May. “But the ability for manufacturers to continue to accelerate, or to maintain sharp surges in production, is in question given underlying demand, apart from some bright spots, doesn’t seem to have permeated more widely across the different sectors,” said

While manufacturing expanded at the fastest pace in three months in June in China, business confidence slumped to its lowest level this year amid a government crackdown on debt risks and tightening financial conditions. “We believe cyclical momentum (in China) has likely peaked and will ease further due to tighter financial conditions,” Yin Zhang and Helen Qiao at Merrill Lynch wrote in a note.

“Looking ahead, since overall growth is still higher than the policy target level at around 6.5 percent for real GDP, we expect policy makers to maintain the tightening bias in (the second half), which is likely to impose downward pressure on growth until early 2018.” In Japan, confidence among big manufacturers hit its highest level in over three years in June, according to a survey from the central bank published on Monday. Tumpek Krulut: Celebration of Gamelan to Invoke Divine Vibration

Hindu community in Bali has a special way to honor the gamelan musical instrument. It is carried out by holding otonan ceremony on the Tumpek Krulut falling on Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Krulut (22/10). It is conducted every six months or 210 days. People who have gamelan, the artists and gamelan art troupes are required to implement this ceremony.

Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiarta, Rector of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, said that providing ritual for gamelan instrument was mentioned in the Prakempa palm-leaf manuscript on Balinese gamelan. It was mentioned there were four good ways to play Balinese gamelan namely the logic or philosophy, ethics, aesthetics and techniques to play gamelan.

In the ethics was then mentioned about the otonan for gamelan. To make the gamelan instrument well maintained psychically, it could be done with ritual on Tumpek Krulut. If people would like to learn gamelan, they should perform the ceremony on Tumpek

Krulut. “Tradition of holding ritual for gamelan on Tumpek Krulut is indeed a new tradition because we just realized it,” he said.

In the manuscript was mentioned that gamelan ritual was dedicated to God in his manifestation as the god of the arts. After the ceremony, it was expected that all gamelan musicians could play together. “It is based on the belief that after saying prayers people play gamelan together. In essence, it is building a sense of togetherness,” he said.

According to Dr. Arya Sugiarta, the tradition of providing ritual for gamelan began around the 1990s when the Dance Academy of Indonesia (former name of the ISI)

learned about the Prakempa manuscript well. “Through our faculty and students, we try to disseminate the information, so that it has now become a tradition,” he added.

The manuscript also mentioned that people were not allowed to overstep the gamelan as an effort to take care of the gamelan well. In addition to offering some oblations, it should also be followed with good behavior. Essentially, it was the way how to respect to Balinese gamelan accordingly. “If it has been respected and cared for, it will automatically generate the taksu or divine vibration,” he added.

Gamelan should not be overstepped because the respected goods might not be overstepped.

Foodies may already be familiar with this delicacy made of boiled pork in thick gravy that is called siobak. The district of Buleleng is well known for its rich varety of culutre – including its special foods.

In fact a visit to Buleleng would not be complete without indulging in some of its culinary treasures such as its popular Siobak.

Siobak can be found in a variety of places in Buleleng ranging from street vendors to fine restaurant.

Aye Syobak is the name of one of the street stalls that is quite popular in Buleleng. Manager Ketut Utama explained that he inherited his Siobka recipes from his biological grandmother and that he grew up learning how to run a the family

food stall, so when Ketut got married, he dicided to continue the family business.

Ketut also explained that they always use selected pork and in order to eliminate the pungent odor of pork they first boil the meat with spieces and soy sauce. This boiling process also yields the tasty gravy for which they are famous while the sauce soy sauce gives that special sweetness.

They also use pork skin, fatty meat, offal and head of pork. “ Actually it is easy to make siobak, you just need meat and seasoning” he added.

People from all over Buleleng and other parts of Bali come to enjoy this 62 year old man’s special siobak. “We often have customaers from Malaysia and other foreign

countries who stop by when visitiing Buleleng”, said Ketut. The distinctives foods of Buleleng are clearly not just popular with locals but with people from all over.

Since siobak there are more and more people serving siobak in Bulelelng, Ketut needs to keep his recipie fine tuned in order to remain competitive. “Since my mother’S time our flavour has remained the same. It feels original without adding extra ingredients” he said.

According to Ketut Utama, it is important to keep the authenticity of Buleleng siobaks’ flavour. Aye Syobak which was first established in 1975 is located near the former harbor of Buleleng, at 38 Jalan Surapati. (kmb)

WASHINGTON - During his presidential campaign, Republican Donald Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “strong leader” with whom he’d like to reset tense U.S.Russian relations.

But as Trump heads to his first face-to-face meeting as president with Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany on July 7-8, he is under pressure at home to take a tough line with the Kremlin.

Allegations of Russian meddling in last year’s U.S. elections have alarmed both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, who are pushing to extend tough sanctions placed on Russia following its 2014 annexation of Crimea, a peninsula belonging to Ukraine.

Lawmakers including Cory Gardner, a Republican senator from Colorado, are also concerned Russia has prolonged the civil war in Syria by backing its President Bashar al-Assad, a strongman whose forces have used chemical weapons against insurgents and civilians. The chaos has fueled instability in the region and a flood of migrants to Europe.

“President (Trump) needs to make it clear that the continued aggression by Russia around the globe ... is

unacceptable, and that they will be held accountable,” said Gardner, who was among six lawmakers invited by the White House last month to discuss foreign policy with Trump over dinner.

Meanwhile, the appointment of a special counsel who is investigating potential links between the Russian government and members of the Trump campaign has weakened the president’s ability to maneuver with Russia, foreign policy experts say.

The U.S. intelligence community has concluded Russia sponsored hacking of Democratic Party groups last year to benefit Trump over his Democrat challenger Hillary Clinton. Russia has denied those allegations while Trump has repeatedly dismissed the idea of any coordination between his campaign and Russia as a “witch hunt.”

Still, just the optics of Trump meeting with Putin, a former KGB agent, are fraught with risk, foreign policy experts say.

“If (Trump) smiles, if he wraps his arm around Putin, if he says ‘I’m honored to meet you, we’re going to find a way forward,’ ... I think Congress is going to react extremely negatively to that,” said Julie Smith, a former national security aide in the Obama administration. (rtr)

KIEV - Ukrainian company Intellect Service was not responsible for last week’s international cyber attack that brought down the computer systems of several major companies, the father and daughter team told Reuters on Monday.

Cyber security investigators are still trying to establish who was behind the attack.

But Ukrainian officials and security firms including Microsoft, Cisco’s Talos and Symantec say they have confirmed that some of the initial infections occurred when malware was transmitted to users of a Ukrainian tax software program called M.E.Doc. They say the virus, dubbed NotPetya by some experts, was primarily spread via an update issued by M.E.Doc, the accounting software developed by Olesya Linnik and her father Sergei at his company, Intellect Service.

In their first interview with foreign media since the attack, the Linniks said there was no evidence M.E.Doc, which is U k r a i n e ’s m o s t - p o p u l a r a c counting software, was used to spread the virus and they did not understand the charges against them.

“What has been established in these days, when no one slept and only worked? We studied and analysed our product for signs of hacking - it is not infected with a virus and everything is fine, it is safe,” said Olesya, managing partner at Intellect Service.

“The update package, which was sent out long before the virus was spread, we checked it 100 times and everything is fine.”

Little known outside Ukrai-

nian accounting circles, M.E.Doc is an everyday part of life at around 80 percent of companies in Ukraine. The software allows its 400,000 clients to send and discuss financial documents between internal departments, as well as file them with the Ukrainian state tax service.

POLICE INVESTIGATING Investigators have said M.E.Doc’s expansive reach is what made it a prime target for the unknown hackers, who were looking for a way to infect as many victims as possible.

“These malware families were spread using Ukrainian accounting software called M.E.Doc,” researchers at Slovakian security software firm ESET said in a blog post on Friday.

“M.E.Doc has an internal messaging and document exchange system so attackers could send spearphishing messages to victims.”

Ukrainian police said on Monday the Linniks could now face criminal charges if it is confirmed they knew about the infection but took no action.

“We have issues with the company’s leadership, because they knew there was a virus in their software but didn’t do anything ... if this is confirmed, we will bring charges,” Serhiy Demedyuk, the head of Ukraine’s cyber police, told Reuters in a text message.

Speaking before Demedyuk’s comments at the company’s modest offices on an industrial estate in Kiev, Sergei, Intellect Service’s general director, raised his voice in frustration. (rtr)

Indonesia’s reputation as a model of moderate Islam intact -president

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s president said on Monday his country remains a model of moderate Islam, countering critics who point to mass rallies by radical Muslims and the jailing of a Christian politician for blasphemy as evidence its reputation is crumbling. “Pluralism has always been a part of Indonesia’s DNA,” Joko Widodo told Reuters in an interview at the presidential palace in Jakarta.

“Despite many challenges, Islam in Indonesia has always been a force for moderation.”

Indonesia’s state ideology includes national unity, social justice and democracy alongside belief in God, and enshrines religious diversity in a secular system of government. Hardline Islamist groups were banned under the authoritarian regime of President Suharto, which ended in 1998, but they have gained ground in recent years, emerging from the fringes of society in the world’s biggest Muslimmajority country.

Religious and political tensions spiralled at the end of last year when Islamists led protests by hundreds of thousands in Jakarta against the capital’s then governor, an ethnic-Chinese Christian who was charged with insulting the Koran. Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ally of President Widodo, lost his bid for re-election to a Muslim rival in April after months of agitation against him by a radical group, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

In May he was sentenced to two years in jail for blasphemy. Widodo said Indonesia was “still a model” of pluralism and noted comments on Saturday by former U.S. President Barack Obama - on a personal visit to the country where he spent some of his childhood - that its history of tolerance must be preserved. “It is very important here in Indonesia, the United States, Europe, everywhere, to fight against the politics of ‘us and them’,” Obama told a conference in Jakarta.

CAREFUL LINE ON HOMOSEXUALITY

The targets of hardline Islamic groups have included the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, many of whom have been driven underground by police raids. With the exception of the ultra-conservative Aceh province, where Islamic law is enforced and two men were publicly flogged in May for gay sex, homosexuality is legal in Indonesia.

But Widodo’s own defence minister has branded homosexuality a national security threat and last week a leader of Indonesia’s second-largest Muslim group called for a boycott of Starbucks because of the international coffee chain’s progay stand. The president trod a careful line on the question of LGBT rights, saying that “Indonesia remains a tolerant nation” whose constitution guarantees that everyone’s rights are respected and protected.

But he added: “We are the largest majority Muslim country so Indonesia has its own religious norms, unique values and also cultures that must be respected.”

ISIS HAS NO PLACE IN INDONESIA

The muscle-flexing of hardline groups has fed fears that Indonesia will become fertile ground for Islamist militants.

Widodo said he would press parliament to move more quickly on passing a new anti-terrorism law that would make it easier to both arrest and detain suspects. “We need this law,” he said, hammering his finger on the table in front of him.

The attempt in May by a small army of Islamic State-allied fighters to overrun a city in the southern Philippines has been widely seen as a bid by the ultra-radical group, on a backfoot in Syria and Iraq, to establish a stronghold in Southeast Asia.

Philippines officials have said there were Indonesians and Malaysians among the fighters who attacked Marawi City, where a battle with government troops has ground on for six weeks.

“ISIS has no place in Indonesia,” Widodo said, using a popular acronym for Islamic State. He noted that Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines had agreed to joint maritime patrols to prevent militants moving across their islands, and said he discussed cooperation on a phone call with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte last week.

“Our security and intelligence agencies continue to work hard to combat this threat. We are also continuing to promote the values of moderate Islam and when I talked with President Duterte last week I said that ‘your problem is my problem’. (rtr)

Woods says has completed treatment to deal with medications

Nusa Lembongan Seaweed Farms SEMARAPURA - Besides fishing, seaweed farming is a main source of living for the Nusa islanders. Seaweed farming takes place around many parts of the island, but the most accessible farms are on the southern side of Lembongan Village.

Most of the seaweed grown here is destined for the Asian cosmetics industry, as well as processed for foodstuffs and carrageenan jelly powder. You’ll see many harvested seaweed being dried up on the shore.

Certain types of seaweed are also used as fresh salads, too!

The people of Nusa Lembongan live in the villages of Jungut Batu and Lembongan and number around 5,000.

The only way of reaching the island is by sea: from Sanur beach or Denpasar’s Tanjung Benoa harbour, or from Tribhuana harbour in the village of Kusamba, Klungkung.

There is also a variety of ways of crossing to choose from, ranging from the kind of wooden boats that are used by local people to the speed boats commonly used by tourists.

Strategically, Sanur beach is the

most convienant to gain access to the island, due to its proximity to several tourist locations in and around Denpasar and Kuta.

Means of transport for the crossing and fares per person vary quite a bit, from IDR30,000 one way on the public boat to about IDR50,000 by speed boat. The public boat makes the trip every morning at 8am while the speed boats make three trips during the day.

A farmer from Nusa Lembongan harvests seaweed from the sea.The boats used by the local people are made from wood or fibreglass. They are quite big with bamboo outriggers on both sides for stabilization and to reduce rocking when ploughing through the waves.

The boats follow Bali’s eastern shoreline and cross the Badung strait to head for Nusa Lembongan.

It is a pleasant trip across fairly calm waters and the one and a half hours it takes pass quickly. From the boat I could see the white sands of the beach spread out in front of Jungut Batu village. The seaweed cultivated by the local people here was also

easily visible because the seawater is so clear.

Nusa Lembongan is known as the biggest seaweed producing area in Bali. Along with West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and Central and South Sulawesi, Bali is one of the most important seaweed producing areas in Indonesia.

The landscape of Nusa Lembongan, which is largely made up of gently inclined white sand, and the transparent seawater with suitably strong currents, make it ideal for the cultivation of seaweed.

Since the 1990s the number of tourists visiting this island has increased rapidly and many facilities and infrastructure - including a varied choice of accommodation types - have been built. These range from bungalows and villas to guesthouses and hotels. On my way from the dock to my accommodation, I saw the houses of the local community alongside hotels and other tourist accommodation. Almost every bit of open space is used for drying seaweed. The farmers sometimes seem oblivious to the presence of

tourists but they are very friendly if you get chatting to them. For getting around the island I hired a motorbike. It cost IDR75,000 for 8 hours, including petrol. You can drive it yourself or use a guide for a small additional fee. For large groups or people on a package tour, there are pick up trucks modified for sightseeing expeditions.

Starting from Jungut Batu I headed south towards the village of Lembongan to take a look at the seaweed cultivation areas located on the southern side of the island along the strait that separates Nusa Lembongan from Nusa Ceningan. All along the beach the seaweed farmers come and go, unloading seedlings or loading their latest harvest of seaweed into

their boats. There are a few simple buildings which are used for resting or for preparing the seedlings. The remaining open land is used for drying the seaweed. There are also some souvenir shops and food stalls.

Seaweed cultivation provides a livelihood for most of Nusa Lembongan’s residents while others earn their living from the tourist trade or work for the local government.

Seaweed accounts for a significant boost to the prosperity of the local communities. The most commonly grown types of seaweed are Cottonii and Spinosum. After it is harvested, the local people usually dry it and then sell it to wholesalers who pay between IDR2,000 and IDR5,000 per kilogram. (IBP/net)

Wawrinka stunned by big-hitting Wimbledon debutant Medvedev

CALIFORNIA - Tiger Woods, who was a no-show last week at the PGA tournament that benefits his foundation, said on social media on Monday that he had completed a program to help him manage medications he used to deal with back pain.

“I recently completed an out of state private intensive program.

I will continue to tackle this going forward with my doctors, family and friends. I am so very thankful for all the support I’ve received,” Woods said on Twitter.

Woods checked himself into a clinic after blaming an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications for an early-morning DUI arrest near his Jupiter Island home in Florida on May 29.

The former world number one golfer, who has had several surgeries to relieve lingering back pain, was booked but released several hours later by Palm Beach County police.

“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved,” said Woods, whose police report showed he had passed a breathalyzer test.

“What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

Fourteen-times major winner Woods, 41, has not played professionally since withdrawing from a tournament in Dubai in February.

A 79-time winner on the PGA Tour, he has competed in only 19 events on the PGA Tour since the end of 2013, recording one top-10 finish during that period. He won his last major title at the 2008 U.S. Open. (rtr)

LONDON - Stan Wawrinka’s Wimbledon hopes were shredded in the first round on Monday as the fifth seed, hobbled by a niggling knee injury, came up against one of tennis’s new generation of heavy hitters in the shape of Russian Daniil Medvedev.

The Swiss three times grand slam champion was out-gunned by 21-year-old Medvedev, who had the Centre Court crowd on their feet as he pulled off a dazzling array of winners to wrap up a 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory on his first Wimbledon appearance.

Yet how much of the stunning upset was down to Medvedev’s ability to fire freely from both flanks and how much of it was down to Wawrinka’s discomfort was hard to tell.

The Russian, making only his third grand slam appearance and who

is ranked 46 places below the world number three, was full of energy as he hauled his giant frame around the court.

After wrapping up a memorable victory in two hours and 12 minutes, he bent down and kissed the turf.

“I have no words to describe this.

I guess this memory will be with me forever,” he told reporters.

Wawrinka, who only last month reached the French Open final, will no doubt hope the memory of his sixth first-round Wimbledon exit will not linger.

He had struggled to find any sort

of rhythm and was clearly bothered by the niggling knee problem he said had been dogging him since the end of last year.

“I wasn’t feeling the way I wanted to feel,” he said. “But I played against a great player who I think was confident today, was playing well, was playing faster. It was a tough loss.”

LONDON - Ferrari’s Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel will not face any further sanction for his ‘road rage’ collision with Lewis Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the governing FIA said on Monday.

The German, four times world champion, had been given a 10second stop-and-go penalty during the race for angrily banging wheels with his Mercedes rival while they were behind the safety car.

He had risked a heavy fine, disqualification from the Baku results or even a race ban after the International Automobile Federation decided last week to review the causes of the incident.

Vettel, who turned 30 on Monday, attended a meeting at the FIA’s Paris headquarters with Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene.

The driver admitted full responsibility, pledged to make a public apology and also “committed to

devote personal time over the next 12 months to educational activities across a variety of FIA championships and events”.

The governing body said that “in light of these developments, FIA President Jean Todt decided that on this occasion the matter should be closed”.

He also instructed that Vettel should not endorse any road safety activities until the end of the year. (rtr)

LONDON - Everton have signed highly-rated England defender Michael Keane from Burnley in a deal that could rise to a club record-equalling 30 million pounds ($38.81 million), the Premier League club announced on Monday. The 24-year-old, who has penned a five-year contract, is Everton’s fifth signing of a close season which has seen the club’s Dutch manager Ronald Koeman invest heavily in improving the side.

Inter Milan midfielder Banega returns to Sevilla

Inter Milan and Sevilla have made midfielder Ever Banega’s transfer back to the Spanish club official, both clubs said on Monday. (www. inter.it; www.sevillafc.es) They reached a deal last week for the return of the Argentinian international to Sevilla after one season with Italy’s Inter Milan after he passed medical tests.

Sevilla said that the 29-year-old, who spent two years at the Spanish club before moving to Inter Milan, had signed a three-year contract.

Woods says has completed treatment to deal with medications

Nusa Lembongan Seaweed Farms SEMARAPURA - Besides fishing, seaweed farming is a main source of living for the Nusa islanders. Seaweed farming takes place around many parts of the island, but the most accessible farms are on the southern side of Lembongan Village.

Most of the seaweed grown here is destined for the Asian cosmetics industry, as well as processed for foodstuffs and carrageenan jelly powder. You’ll see many harvested seaweed being dried up on the shore.

Certain types of seaweed are also used as fresh salads, too!

The people of Nusa Lembongan live in the villages of Jungut Batu and Lembongan and number around 5,000.

The only way of reaching the island is by sea: from Sanur beach or Denpasar’s Tanjung Benoa harbour, or from Tribhuana harbour in the village of Kusamba, Klungkung.

There is also a variety of ways of crossing to choose from, ranging from the kind of wooden boats that are used by local people to the speed boats commonly used by tourists.

Strategically, Sanur beach is the

most convienant to gain access to the island, due to its proximity to several tourist locations in and around Denpasar and Kuta.

Means of transport for the crossing and fares per person vary quite a bit, from IDR30,000 one way on the public boat to about IDR50,000 by speed boat. The public boat makes the trip every morning at 8am while the speed boats make three trips during the day.

A farmer from Nusa Lembongan harvests seaweed from the sea.The boats used by the local people are made from wood or fibreglass. They are quite big with bamboo outriggers on both sides for stabilization and to reduce rocking when ploughing through the waves.

The boats follow Bali’s eastern shoreline and cross the Badung strait to head for Nusa Lembongan.

It is a pleasant trip across fairly calm waters and the one and a half hours it takes pass quickly. From the boat I could see the white sands of the beach spread out in front of Jungut Batu village. The seaweed cultivated by the local people here was also

easily visible because the seawater is so clear.

Nusa Lembongan is known as the biggest seaweed producing area in Bali. Along with West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and Central and South Sulawesi, Bali is one of the most important seaweed producing areas in Indonesia.

The landscape of Nusa Lembongan, which is largely made up of gently inclined white sand, and the transparent seawater with suitably strong currents, make it ideal for the cultivation of seaweed.

Since the 1990s the number of tourists visiting this island has increased rapidly and many facilities and infrastructure - including a varied choice of accommodation types - have been built. These range from bungalows and villas to guesthouses and hotels. On my way from the dock to my accommodation, I saw the houses of the local community alongside hotels and other tourist accommodation. Almost every bit of open space is used for drying seaweed. The farmers sometimes seem oblivious to the presence of

tourists but they are very friendly if you get chatting to them. For getting around the island I hired a motorbike. It cost IDR75,000 for 8 hours, including petrol. You can drive it yourself or use a guide for a small additional fee. For large groups or people on a package tour, there are pick up trucks modified for sightseeing expeditions.

Starting from Jungut Batu I headed south towards the village of Lembongan to take a look at the seaweed cultivation areas located on the southern side of the island along the strait that separates Nusa Lembongan from Nusa Ceningan. All along the beach the seaweed farmers come and go, unloading seedlings or loading their latest harvest of seaweed into

their boats. There are a few simple buildings which are used for resting or for preparing the seedlings. The remaining open land is used for drying the seaweed. There are also some souvenir shops and food stalls.

Seaweed cultivation provides a livelihood for most of Nusa Lembongan’s residents while others earn their living from the tourist trade or work for the local government.

Seaweed accounts for a significant boost to the prosperity of the local communities. The most commonly grown types of seaweed are Cottonii and Spinosum. After it is harvested, the local people usually dry it and then sell it to wholesalers who pay between IDR2,000 and IDR5,000 per kilogram. (IBP/net)

Wawrinka stunned by big-hitting Wimbledon debutant Medvedev

CALIFORNIA - Tiger Woods, who was a no-show last week at the PGA tournament that benefits his foundation, said on social media on Monday that he had completed a program to help him manage medications he used to deal with back pain.

“I recently completed an out of state private intensive program.

I will continue to tackle this going forward with my doctors, family and friends. I am so very thankful for all the support I’ve received,” Woods said on Twitter.

Woods checked himself into a clinic after blaming an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications for an early-morning DUI arrest near his Jupiter Island home in Florida on May 29.

The former world number one golfer, who has had several surgeries to relieve lingering back pain, was booked but released several hours later by Palm Beach County police.

“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved,” said Woods, whose police report showed he had passed a breathalyzer test.

“What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

Fourteen-times major winner Woods, 41, has not played professionally since withdrawing from a tournament in Dubai in February.

A 79-time winner on the PGA Tour, he has competed in only 19 events on the PGA Tour since the end of 2013, recording one top-10 finish during that period. He won his last major title at the 2008 U.S. Open. (rtr)

LONDON - Stan Wawrinka’s Wimbledon hopes were shredded in the first round on Monday as the fifth seed, hobbled by a niggling knee injury, came up against one of tennis’s new generation of heavy hitters in the shape of Russian Daniil Medvedev.

The Swiss three times grand slam champion was out-gunned by 21-year-old Medvedev, who had the Centre Court crowd on their feet as he pulled off a dazzling array of winners to wrap up a 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory on his first Wimbledon appearance.

Yet how much of the stunning upset was down to Medvedev’s ability to fire freely from both flanks and how much of it was down to Wawrinka’s discomfort was hard to tell.

The Russian, making only his third grand slam appearance and who

is ranked 46 places below the world number three, was full of energy as he hauled his giant frame around the court.

After wrapping up a memorable victory in two hours and 12 minutes, he bent down and kissed the turf.

“I have no words to describe this.

I guess this memory will be with me forever,” he told reporters.

Wawrinka, who only last month reached the French Open final, will no doubt hope the memory of his sixth first-round Wimbledon exit will not linger.

He had struggled to find any sort

of rhythm and was clearly bothered by the niggling knee problem he said had been dogging him since the end of last year.

“I wasn’t feeling the way I wanted to feel,” he said. “But I played against a great player who I think was confident today, was playing well, was playing faster. It was a tough loss.”

LONDON - Ferrari’s Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel will not face any further sanction for his ‘road rage’ collision with Lewis Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the governing FIA said on Monday.

The German, four times world champion, had been given a 10second stop-and-go penalty during the race for angrily banging wheels with his Mercedes rival while they were behind the safety car.

He had risked a heavy fine, disqualification from the Baku results or even a race ban after the International Automobile Federation decided last week to review the causes of the incident.

Vettel, who turned 30 on Monday, attended a meeting at the FIA’s Paris headquarters with Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene.

The driver admitted full responsibility, pledged to make a public apology and also “committed to

devote personal time over the next 12 months to educational activities across a variety of FIA championships and events”.

The governing body said that “in light of these developments, FIA President Jean Todt decided that on this occasion the matter should be closed”.

Trump hamstrung at home as he seeks closer ties with Moscow

WASHINGTON - During his presidential campaign, Republican Donald Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “strong leader” with whom he’d like to reset tense U.S.Russian relations.

But as Trump heads to his first face-to-face meeting as president with Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany on July 7-8, he is under pressure at home to take a tough line with the Kremlin.

Allegations of Russian meddling in last year’s U.S. elections have alarmed both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, who are pushing to extend tough sanctions placed on Russia following its 2014 annexation of Crimea, a peninsula belonging to Ukraine.

Lawmakers including Cory Gardner, a Republican senator from Colorado, are also concerned Russia has prolonged the civil war in Syria by backing its President Bashar al-Assad, a strongman whose forces have used chemical weapons against insurgents and civilians. The chaos has fueled instability in the region and a flood of migrants to Europe.

“President (Trump) needs to make it clear that the continued aggression by Russia around the globe ... is

unacceptable, and that they will be held accountable,” said Gardner, who was among six lawmakers invited by the White House last month to discuss foreign policy with Trump over dinner.

Meanwhile, the appointment of a special counsel who is investigating potential links between the Russian government and members of the Trump campaign has weakened the president’s ability to maneuver with Russia, foreign policy experts say.

The U.S. intelligence community has concluded Russia sponsored hacking of Democratic Party groups last year to benefit Trump over his Democrat challenger Hillary Clinton. Russia has denied those allegations while Trump has repeatedly dismissed the idea of any coordination between his campaign and Russia as a “witch hunt.”

Still, just the optics of Trump meeting with Putin, a former KGB agent, are fraught with risk, foreign policy experts say.

“If (Trump) smiles, if he wraps his arm around Putin, if he says ‘I’m honored to meet you, we’re going to find a way forward,’ ... I think Congress is going to react extremely negatively to that,” said Julie Smith, a former national security aide in the Obama administration. (rtr)

KIEV - Ukrainian company Intellect Service was not responsible for last week’s international cyber attack that brought down the computer systems of several major companies, the father and daughter team told Reuters on Monday.

Cyber security investigators are still trying to establish who was behind the attack.

But Ukrainian officials and security firms including Microsoft, Cisco’s Talos and Symantec say they have confirmed that some of the initial infections occurred when malware was transmitted to users of a Ukrainian tax software program called M.E.Doc. They say the virus, dubbed NotPetya by some experts, was primarily spread via an update issued by M.E.Doc, the accounting software developed by Olesya Linnik and her father Sergei at his company, Intellect Service.

In their first interview with foreign media since the attack, the Linniks said there was no evidence M.E.Doc, which is U k r a i n e ’s m o s t - p o p u l a r a c counting software, was used to spread the virus and they did not understand the charges against them.

“What has been established in these days, when no one slept and only worked? We studied and analysed our product for signs of hacking - it is not infected with a virus and everything is fine, it is safe,” said Olesya, managing partner at Intellect Service.

“The update package, which was sent out long before the virus was spread, we checked it 100 times and everything is fine.”

nian accounting circles, M.E.Doc is an everyday part of life at around 80 percent of companies in Ukraine. The software allows its 400,000 clients to send and discuss financial documents between internal departments, as well as file them with the Ukrainian state tax service.

POLICE INVESTIGATING Investigators have said M.E.Doc’s expansive reach is what made it a prime target for the unknown hackers, who were looking for a way to infect as many victims as possible.

“These malware families were spread using Ukrainian accounting software called M.E.Doc,” researchers at Slovakian security software firm ESET said in a blog post on Friday.

“M.E.Doc has an internal messaging and document exchange system so attackers could send spearphishing messages to victims.”

Ukrainian police said on Monday the Linniks could now face criminal charges if it is confirmed they knew about the infection but took no action.

“We have issues with the company’s leadership, because they knew there was a virus in their software but didn’t do anything ... if this is confirmed, we will bring charges,” Serhiy Demedyuk, the head of Ukraine’s cyber police, told Reuters in a text message.

Speaking before Demedyuk’s comments at the company’s modest offices on an industrial estate in Kiev, Sergei, Intellect Service’s general director, raised his voice in frustration. (rtr)

Indonesia’s reputation as a model of moderate Islam intact -president

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s president said on Monday his country remains a model of moderate Islam, countering critics who point to mass rallies by radical Muslims and the jailing of a Christian politician for blasphemy as evidence its reputation is crumbling. “Pluralism has always been a part of Indonesia’s DNA,” Joko Widodo told Reuters in an interview at the presidential palace in Jakarta.

“Despite many challenges, Islam in Indonesia has always been a force for moderation.”

Indonesia’s state ideology includes national unity, social justice and democracy alongside belief in God, and enshrines religious diversity in a secular system of government. Hardline Islamist groups were banned under the authoritarian regime of President Suharto, which ended in 1998, but they have gained ground in recent years, emerging from the fringes of society in the world’s biggest Muslimmajority country.

Religious and political tensions spiralled at the end of last year when Islamists led protests by hundreds of thousands in Jakarta against the capital’s then governor, an ethnic-Chinese Christian who was charged with insulting the Koran. Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ally of President Widodo, lost his bid for re-election to a Muslim rival in April after months of agitation against him by a radical group, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

In May he was sentenced to two years in jail for blasphemy. Widodo said Indonesia was “still a model” of pluralism and noted comments on Saturday by former U.S. President Barack Obama - on a personal visit to the country where he spent some of his childhood - that its history of tolerance must be preserved. “It is very important here in Indonesia, the United States, Europe, everywhere, to fight against the politics of ‘us and them’,” Obama told a conference in Jakarta.

CAREFUL LINE ON HOMOSEXUALITY

The targets of hardline Islamic groups have included the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, many of whom have been driven underground by police raids. With the exception of the ultra-conservative Aceh province, where Islamic law is enforced and two men were publicly flogged in May for gay sex, homosexuality is legal in Indonesia.

But Widodo’s own defence minister has branded homosexuality a national security threat and last week a leader of Indonesia’s second-largest Muslim group called for a boycott of Starbucks because of the international coffee chain’s progay stand. The president trod a careful line on the question of LGBT rights, saying that “Indonesia remains a tolerant nation” whose constitution guarantees that everyone’s rights are respected and protected.

But he added: “We are the largest majority Muslim country so Indonesia has its own religious norms, unique values and also cultures that must be respected.”

ISIS HAS NO PLACE IN INDONESIA

The muscle-flexing of hardline groups has fed fears that Indonesia will become fertile ground for Islamist militants.

Widodo said he would press parliament to move more quickly on passing a new anti-terrorism law that would make it easier to both arrest and detain suspects. “We need this law,” he said, hammering his finger on the table in front of him.

The attempt in May by a small army of Islamic State-allied fighters to overrun a city in the southern Philippines has been widely seen as a bid by the ultra-radical group, on a backfoot in Syria and Iraq, to establish a stronghold in Southeast Asia.

Philippines officials have said there were Indonesians and Malaysians among the fighters who attacked Marawi City, where a battle with government troops has ground on for six weeks.

“ISIS has no place in Indonesia,” Widodo said, using a popular acronym for Islamic State. He noted that Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines had agreed to joint maritime patrols to prevent militants moving across their islands, and said he discussed cooperation on a phone call with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte last week.

“Our security and intelligence agencies continue to work hard to combat this threat. We are also continuing to promote the values of moderate Islam and when I talked with President Duterte last week I said that ‘your problem is my problem’. (rtr)

TOKYO - Japan’s top currency diplomat has been appointed for another one-year term in a regular finance ministry reshuffle, underscoring a desire to maintain policy consistency as Tokyo faces potentially tough economic talks with the United States. Masatsugu Asakawa, a 59-year-old policy veteran with policymaker contacts inside and outside of Japan, played a key role in setting up Japan’s bilateral economic dialogue with the United States, which kicked off in April.

The Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday that Asakawa will serve another year as vice finance minister for international affairs, a position he has held since July 2015. The role oversees Japan’s currency policy and

international diplomacy and includes representing Tokyo in Group of Seven (G7) and Group of 20 (G20) meetings.

Asakawa’s reappointment will help Tokyo negotiate with consisten-

cy in the second round of the bilateral economic dialogue with the United States, which is expected to be held later this year, analysts said.

U.S. President Donald Trump campaigned for office on an “Amer-

ica First” platform, saying he would boost manufacturing jobs and shrink the country’s trade deficit with the likes of Japan. Not many officials have held the post for more than two years. Those that have done so include Haruhiko Kuroda, the governor of the Bank of Japan since 2013.

Asakawa is close to Finance Minister Taro Aso, having served as his executive secretary when Aso was prime minister in 2008-2009, and as his

executive assistant when he became finance minister in 2012.

Japan has not intervened in the currency market under Asakawa’s stewardship, though he has frequently jawboned markets to stem yen spikes that risk hurting the exportreliant economy. Some analysts see Asakawa as a dark-horse candidate to replace Kuroda at the BOJ when the incumbent’s five-year term ends in April next year. (rtr)

Britain misses out as global manufacturing surges LONDON/SINGAPORE - British factories were left out of a demanddriven surge in activity across much of Asia and Europe in June, as weakness in sterling failed to translate into export growth, surveys showed. Factories in the euro zone rounded off the first half of 2017 by ramping up at the fastest rate for over six years while Asia’s tech-manufacturing economies were helped by growing global demand for electronics products.

But British manufacturing grew more slowly than anyone polled by Reuters expected as consumers faced the double-hit of accelerating inflation - caused in large part by the fall in the pound since last year’s vote to leave the EU - and slowing wage growth.

Monday’s survey suggested the supposed silver lining of a weakened pound - more competitive exports - is proving elusive and could make Bank of England officials think twice about raising interest rates.

The Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’Index (PMI) fell to 54.3 from a downwardly-revised 56.3 in May, a three-month low and below all forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists that pointed to a reading of 56.5. A reading above 50 indicates growth. “The decline in the PMI in June robustly challenges hopes that manufacturing and exports will pick up and offset the consumer spending slowdown. Today’s manufacturing report weakens the case for raising interest rates soon,” said Samuel Tombs at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

June’s manufacturing PMI for the euro zone rose to 57.4, its highest since April 2011 and up from May’s 57.0. Suggesting the bloc’s momentum will continue into the second half, new orders rose at the fastest rate since early 2011, backlogs of work increased at the fastest pace in over 13 years, raw materials were depleted and factories increased headcount at a

near-record pace.

The upturn came alongside factories increasing prices, as they have done for nine months, welcome news for policymakers at the European Central Bank who have been battling for years to get inflation back to their 2 percent target ceiling.

Inflation was a stronger-thanexpected 1.3 percent in June, official flash data showed on Friday, and while still below target, recent strong economic data meant ECB chief Mario Draghi last week raised the prospect of policy tightening. In Britain, central banker have started to signal that a first rate hike in a decade might be approaching to help curb the sharp rise in inflation.

BoE Governor Mark Carney says he is watching to see how the economy copes with the launch of Brexit talks and whether weakness among consumers could be offset by investment and exports.

ASIA ACCELERATION Private sector surveys of manufacturers in Asia showed factories in China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan picked up in June, driven largely by a recovery in exports. But continued declines in energy prices, which weighed on manufacturing in Indonesia and Malaysia, could hurt these two economies, while in India, sluggish domestic demand offset strong foreign demand and led to a slowdown.

Factory PMIs for South Korea, Japan, Taiwan Vietnam and India all remained above 50. Tumpek Krulut: Celebration of Gamelan to Invoke Divine Vibration

Hindu community in Bali has a special way to honor the gamelan musical instrument. It is carried out by holding otonan ceremony on the Tumpek Krulut falling on Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Krulut (22/10). It is conducted every six months or 210 days. People who have gamelan, the artists and gamelan art troupes are required to implement this ceremony.

Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiarta, Rector of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, said that providing ritual for gamelan instrument was mentioned in the Prakempa palm-leaf manuscript on Balinese gamelan. It was mentioned there were four good ways to play Balinese gamelan namely the logic or philosophy, ethics, aesthetics and techniques to play gamelan.

In the ethics was then mentioned about the otonan for gamelan. To make the gamelan instrument well maintained psychically, it could be done with ritual on Tumpek Krulut. If people would like to learn gamelan, they should perform the ceremony on Tumpek

Krulut. “Tradition of holding ritual for gamelan on Tumpek Krulut is indeed a new tradition because we just realized it,” he said.

In the manuscript was mentioned that gamelan ritual was dedicated to God in his manifestation as the god of the arts. After the ceremony, it was expected that all gamelan musicians could play together. “It is based on the belief that after saying prayers people play gamelan together. In essence, it is building a sense of togetherness,” he said.

According to Dr. Arya Sugiarta, the tradition of providing ritual for gamelan began around the 1990s when the Dance Academy of Indonesia (former name of the ISI)

learned about the Prakempa manuscript well. “Through our faculty and students, we try to disseminate the information, so that it has now become a tradition,” he added.

The manuscript also mentioned that people were not allowed to overstep the gamelan as an effort to take care of the gamelan well. In addition to offering some oblations, it should also be followed with good behavior. Essentially, it was the way how to respect to Balinese gamelan accordingly. “If it has been respected and cared for, it will automatically generate the taksu or divine vibration,” he added.

Aye Syobak is the name of one of the street stalls that is quite popular in Buleleng. Manager Ketut Utama explained that he inherited his Siobka recipes from his biological grandmother and that he grew up learning how to run a the family

food stall, so when Ketut got married, he dicided to continue the family business.

Ketut also explained that they always use selected pork and in order to eliminate the pungent odor of pork they first boil the meat with spieces and soy sauce. This boiling process also yields the tasty gravy for which they are famous while the sauce soy sauce gives that special sweetness.

They also use pork skin, fatty meat, offal and head of pork. “ Actually it is easy to make siobak, you just need meat and seasoning” he added.

People from all over Buleleng and other parts of Bali come to enjoy this 62 year old man’s special siobak. “We often have customaers from Malaysia and other foreign

countries who stop by when visitiing Buleleng”, said Ketut. The distinctives foods of Buleleng are clearly not just popular with locals but with people from all over.

Since siobak there are more and more people serving siobak in Bulelelng, Ketut needs to keep his recipie fine tuned in order to remain competitive. “Since my mother’S time our flavour has remained the same. It feels original without adding extra ingredients” he said.

Schapelle Corby’s parole papers rake in over $20k on eBay

THE parole book of convicted drug smuggler and newly created social media star Schapelle Corby has sold to an anonymous eBay bidder for $20,100.

Corby’s worn parole papers attracted 123 bids in an online auction supporting a children’s charity headed by Adam Whittington, the man at the centre of 60 Minutes’ Beirut child recovery.

The auction began last Monday at a starting price of $0.99, and reached the winning bid in one week.

All funds raised will go towards Project Rescue Children (PRC), a global child-rescue charity Mr Whittington launched in Australia following his release from a Lebanese jail.

Mr Whittington described Corby’s donation as “amazing”. “Being in her horrific position myself in the past, I know how personal this is … Thanks to Schapelle, PRC will be able to make a start in building our first ever PRC safe haven for children in Cambodia…” he posted on Instagram.

Mr Whittington previously told News Corp Australia that Corby became aware of the project through John McLeod, a PRC Director and the private security guard who arranged her Bali exit.

“Our sincere thanks to Schapelle Corby for entrusting us with something so personal which has now become the catalyst for new opportunities for children at risk,” a post on the charity’s Facebook page read.

PRC’s motto is to rescue kidnapped children from child prostitution and slavery.

Reports have also emerged that Corby may appear on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother, but her sister Mercedes has labelled the rumours a “load of crap”.

Last month, Corby’s return to Australia from Indonesia sparked a media frenzy and her Instagram account has quickly garnered almost 200,000 followers. (kmb)

Some analysts said the flight details on Tuesday suggested the new missile had a range of more than 8,000 km, underscoring major advances in its programme. Other analysts said they believed its range was not so far.

pan and the United States said the missile landed in the sea in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone after being launched on a high trajectory from near an airfield northwest of the North’s capital, Pyongyang.

The North said its missiles were now capable of striking anywhere in the world.

“It appears the test was successful. If launched on a standard angle, the missile could have a range of more than 8,000 km,” said Kim Dong-yub, a military expert at Kyungnam University’s Institute of Far Eastern Studies in Seoul.

“But we have to see more details of the new missile to determine if North Korea has acquired ICBM technology.”

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who convened a national security council meeting, said earlier the missile was believed to be an intermediate-range type, but the military was looking into the possibility it was an ICBM.

SINGAPORE - As Singapore’s parliament began the second day of a debate on Tuesday over Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s dispute with his siblings over their late father’s house, his estranged brother accused the prime minister of making false claims.

Since mid-June, Singaporeans have been riveted by a public battle between the heirs of Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s long-serving first prime minister, over whether to demolish the old family home or let the government decide whether it should become a heritage site.

Before he died in March 2015, Lee made it public that he wanted the humbly furnished home near the bustling Orchard Road shopping district to be demolished rather than turned into some kind of museum.

He stated that in his last will, part of which was released by the prime minister’s younger brother last month, but the prime minister has said there were “deeply troubling circumstances” over how the will was drawn up.

The prime minister’s brother and sister accuse him of being disingenuous and abusing his power by using a committee

to look at options for the house.

Following the accusations, Prime Minister Lee called for a special sitting of parliament to “clear the air” over an issue that some people say has tarnished Singapore’s image.

The prime minister has consistently denied the allegations, and on Monday laid out his side of the argument in a lengthy statement at the outset of a debate that was adjourned after seven hours.

But as lawmakers began gathering for the resumption on Tuesday, the prime minister’s brother, Lee Hsien Yang, posted a sharp rejoinder on his Facebook page.

“LHL (Lee Hsien Loong) has made convoluted, ultimately false claims about Lee Kuan Yew’s wishes. LHL is trying to suggest that because LKY signed some renovation plans in early 2012, he was open to preservation of the house,” Lee Hsien Yang said in the post.

The post went on to say that Lee Kuan Yew’s desire for the house to be demolished was unwavering, and that any consideration of alternatives was only because Lee Hsien Loong had led him to believe that the house at 38, Oxley Road, would be gazetted.

“If he changed his mind on demolition, he would have made it known in a clear and public fashion. He never did,” Lee Hsien Yang wrote.

Lee Hsien Yang and his sister, Lee Wei Ling, want the house to be demolished once Lee Wei Ling ceases to live there, in accordance with their father’s will.

Prime Minister Lee has also said that he personally favours honouring his father’s wishes, but he has questioned the will and argued that his father also made provision in case the house could not be knocked down due to any regulatory changes.

Prime Minister Lee has recused himself from the committee looking at the options, and said he has played no part in its discussions.

During the first day of the debate there were no revelations over the accusation that Prime Minister Lee had abused his power, or why his siblings should say that they feared the “organs of the state” could be used against them.

Lee Hsien Yang has said he and his wife, lawyer Lee Suet Fern, would be leaving Singapore because they felt closely monitored and hugely unwelcome. (rtr)

Robots to aid tourists, clean floors at South Korean airport

INCHEON — Robots will start roaming South Korea’s largest airport this summer, helping travelers find their boarding gates and keep its floors clean as the country prepares for its first Winter Olympics game.

Starting this month, Troika, a self-driving robot made by LG Electronics, will rove the Incheon International Airport, telling travelers how long it takes to get to boarding gates and escorting them to their flights. A jumbo cleaning robot will help cleaning staff swab the wide expanses of floors in the airport west of Seoul.

Troika, about the size of a young teen,

is equipped with a rectangular display on its front that looks like a giant smartphone screen and can show flight information, an airport map and weather data. Its partly rounded head has a flat touchscreen face that displays blinking or smiling eyes or information.

The guiding bot responds to its name.

Travelers can insert their tickets into its scanner to get flight information, and Troika will then ask if they want to be escorted to their gates, warning laggards to “Please stay closer so I can see you.”

Troika’s debut piqued the interest of many in the airport. Heads swiveled and children approached with curiosity as the 140-centi-

menter (4 foot 6 inch) robot with its white body and black screens glided through the terminal.

Robotics is gaining ground in South Korea, where many big businesses are automating factory production lines. South Korean researchers have won awards in international robot competitions. In 2015, South Korea’s Team KAIST beat the U.S. and Japan to win the DARPA Robotics Challenge with a humanoid that completed tasks without losing balance. But South Korea has been slow to introduce human-like robots or interactive robots in public places like hotels or stores, unlike its neighboring Japan where Softbank’s humanoid Pepper

Incheon International Airport Corp. believes it is the first to introduce such service-oriented robots in a South Korean public space. Another state-owned airport operator, Korea Airports Corp., which operates 15 international airports in South Korea but not Incheon airport, also has teamed up with local companies to introduce airpurifying robots to measure air quality and clean terminals.

Incheon International Airport Corp. said in a statement that it does not expect the robots to replace human workers, but just to help, especially with overnight shifts and physically demanding tasks.

Future plans include deploying robots to advise travelers about items that are banned on flights, serve food in airport lounges and carry cargo.

South Korea expects the robots to burnish its reputation as a technology leader when the country hosts the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

But its maker LG is still working out the kinks.

Troika can recognize its location inside the airport terminal and navigate around passers-by and obstacles, said Kim Hyoungrock, the chief research engineer at LG Electronics who oversaw the robot’s development.

It’s meant to be a fast learner: By July, Troika will be speaking English, Korean, Chinese and Japanese, Kim said. However the robot can only perform a few simple tasks it has been programmed to carry out.

During a recent test run it failed to recognize some voice commands, such as when Amethyst Ma of San Jose, California, asked how she and her kids could catch a bus to the city.

Still, such machines could be quite useful for overseas travelers, Ma said.

“It’s becoming common in a lot of public places so that’s why I came to it right away,” she said. “It’s a source of information, especially if we don’t speak the local language.” (rtr)

Chilean scientists produce biodiesel from microalgae

SANTIAGO - Biodiesel made from microalgae could power buses and trucks and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80 percent, Chilean scientists said, possibly curbing pollution in contaminated cities like Santiago.

Experts from the department of Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses at Chile’s Catholic University said they had grown enough algae to fragment it and extract the oil which, after removing moisture and debris, can be converted into biofuel.

“What is new about our process is the intent to produce this fuel from microalgae, which are microorganisms,” researcher Car-

los Saez told Reuters.

Most of the world’s biodiesel, which reduces dependence on petroleum, is derived from soybean oil. It can also be made from animal fat, canola or palm oil.

Saez said a main challenge going forward would be to produce a sufficient volume of microalgae. A wide variety of fresh and salt water algaes are found in Chile, a South American nation with a long Pacific coast.

The scientists are trying to improve algae growing technology to ramp up production at a low cost using limited energy, Saez said. (rtr)

DENPASAR — Implementation of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) has lasted 39 years. In terms of artistic value, the BAF has gone worldwide. Internationally, it has boomed both in terms of the dance and gamelan. However, in addition to staging the art, the SME stand should also exhibit the quality art and products. This was conveyed by I Nyoman Mudita, the owner of Mudita Gold and Silver, who is also Chairman of the Bali Silver Association, on Monday (Jul. 3).

According to him, BAF is the arena for the SMEs to show off their art products. Therefore, the SMEs should showcase their best products in the BAF really considered in terms of the art. It includes metallic craft stand. The metals having artistic and quality value are gold and silver.

However, in line with the changing of times and economic demands, since the past five years, the alpaca materials are on display in the SME stand of the BAF. Local and national market share differs from the Asian and international market. Local and national market shares prefer alpaca to silver. “So, silver has shifted to alpaca,” he said.

Actually, the alpaca is not handmade but mold. As consequence, the silversmiths who work on silver design finally reduces as having been replaced with alpaca denoting a mold product. It results in the reduction in manpower.

The presence of alpaca within the past 5 years has urged silver handicrafts having been built since 40 years ago. People that do not understand about silver and alpaca will certainly compare both prod-

ucts in terms of price. “People can own a product worth IDR 300,000 whereas the material is different,” he said.

Silver has higher price than alpaca, and the quality is better.

“Alpaca is categorized into zinc.

If it is not compatible to one’s ear, it can be irritated,” he said. The internationally recognized silver is the one with 925 content. Since the international market is rather sluggish, the material then shifts to alpaca.

Alpaca cannot be touched with the heart. In other words, after being used, the alpaca is just placed haphazardly like a worthless item.

“People will use alpaca product no more than a month, and then it will be wasted. It cannot be recycled.

While, people will put silver in a safe place like a valuable item,” he said.

He hoped that the SMEs can be further developed considering that BAF has gone international. The market also needs to be upgraded to Asia and Europe. “During this one-month event, the SMEs should be showing off the quality products and working motives,” he added.

In addition, in submitting a permit, metal entrepreneurs do not include alpaca. They even carry silver and gold. The Denpasar Art Center has great value in the eyes of the world. “So, this art is prominent.

In terms of the SMEs, the art is now no longer occupies prominent position,” he concluded.

According to him, if later on the alpaca products are displayed in the SME stand of the BAF, it should be located separately from silver and gold products, so that consumers can also distinguish between silver and alpaca. (kmb42)

Moreover, Bali has an extraordinary gift in terms of its nature. The task of young generation is to maintain the sustainability of Balinese culture and nature. One of the ways is by encouraging organic-based farming and utilizing nature in order to return to nature so as to reduce pesticides. “We are developing organic farming like in Gianyar, Karangasem and Jembrana to encourage organic-based farming,” he said.

By that way, the water quality will also be maintained like in Subak Pulagan, Gianyar, whose water source comes from Tirta Empul. Otherwise, the water will get polluted. PPDB causes chaos

Governor signs gubernatorial regulation to ‘break’ ministerial regulation

DENPASAR - The Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017 becoming the reference of the new student admission (PPDB) this year is accused of making chaos. Moreover, there is a quota or percentage set forth in four tracks of PPDB, namely 10 percent of local area, 20 percent of achievement track, 20 percent of poor, inclusion and equality track, and the regular track. In addition, Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture also reduces the number of students in a group of learners to a maximum of 36 people. Such quota is not fair to poor students, especially in senior high and vocational school.

This PPDB issue was discussed in a working meeting between the governor and the Bali House of Representatives in the parliamentary building on Monday (Jul. 3). The meeting led by Deputy Chairman of Bali House, Nyoman Sugawa Korry, was attended by all commissions.

Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House, Nyoman Parta, said the PPDB has threatened the integrity of the community let alone the local area track use maximum zoning of the subdistrict. A member of Commission IV, I Wayan Rawan Atmaja, said that PPDB in Badung is the worst occurred in South Kuta. As the PPDB rules prohibit schools to implement double shifts, consequently many prospective students of high school and vocation school cannot be accepted. Actually,

previously the schools have been accustomed to opening the morning and afternoon class.

Secretary of Commission III, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said the students with outstanding achievement at national and international level should be accepted by high school/ vocational school. However, since their family card registration is not in accordance with the school area, such excellent students finally could not be accepted. Meanwhile, a member of Commission I, I Nyoman Adnyana, said the PPDB has deviated because chief of customary village and headman are also involved.

The zoning also raises a new problem of coercion for urbanization. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017 becoming the reference of the PPDB has actually been ideal. However, it does not pay adequate attention to the field situation so that it cannot be fully implemented.

“The Education Law sets forth a 12-year compulsory education. It is impossible to achieve 12 years if limited like that.

It is a pity if poor people should be forced to attend private schools, it’s expensive. How do they want to go to school?

We have to side with our poor people,” he said.

According to Pastika, public schools would be useless if they only educate the rich and smart students. With this condition, the rich will get richer and the poor will become poorer. Conversely, the smart will get smarter, and the fool will be more stupid. This is what he calls unfair, and contrary to social justice.

“Other having high exam score (NEM), the rich can attend favorite schools or public schools financed by the state.

Conversely, since getting lower exam score, the poor should go to private and expensive schools. Ultimately, they cannot go to school,” he explained.

Pastika also requested the support from the parliament to break some of PPDB rules in the regulation of minister of education and culture. Moreover, there has been a polemic in the local area with maximum zoning of subdistrict. Schools located in densely populated area finally get a lot of protests because they cannot accommodate all the students around them. Not to mention the ration of students from outside the district/municipality only is given 5 percent of the total tracks.

“It’s strange, isn’t it? Residents from Jembrana, for instance, their son was born here. Because their father has a family card issued in Jembrana, they have to go back to Jembrana. It is not possible. Or they must move again here, so it’s not possible,” he explained.

After the meeting, Pastika immediately ordered the head of Bali education and the head of legal bureau to make a gubernatorial regulation. This gubernatorial regulation will become the legal instrument so that the principal will not get sanction when they break the regulation of minister of education and culture. The regulation planned to be signed on Tuesday (Jul. 4) allows schools to re-implement double shifts.

“Well, all this time some schools have applied double shifts. Now, it’s just operated in single shift so that many children cannot be accepted. From the first they have double shifts, so now let them apply double shifts, right?” he affirmed.

Head of the Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardhani, last Monday invited the chief of principal working group (MKKS) of the district and municipality. Chief of the MKKS was invited to a meeting to follow up the agreement between the governor and the Bali House of Representatives related to the gubernatorial regulation. It includes discussing the issues that arise in the PPDB process considering this policy will also affect the process of re-enrollment of new student candidates. “This issue will be discussed so that each district / municipality should bring their problems at hand.

Next we will have a meeting first,” she said.

Head of Legal and Human Rights Bureau of Bali Regional Secretariat, I Wayan Sugiada, said the gubernatorial regulation is not contradictory to the Law No.20/2003 on National Education System. Instead, the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture 17 is not in line with its superior law.

Besides, the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture 17 cannot become a source of law because there is no command in the Law on the National Education System for the minister to issue the rule. In this case, a lower regulation breaks higher provisions so it is automatically null and void by law.

“Secondly, the more fatal is that the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture 17 contains sanctions in the provisions of Article 30. According to Law No.12/2011 on the establishment of legislation, mentioning that the rules permitting to carry sanctions are the law, governmental regulation (PP) and local regulations. The ministerial regulation making maximally for dismissal of principal is not allowed,” he said.

Sugiada ensured that gubernatorial regulation was already signed by the governor on Tuesday. Subsequently, this gubernatorial regulation will also be submitted to central government no later than seven days after the stipulation. (kmb32)

LOS ANGELES - With the help of some of pop and R&B’s biggest names, music producer DJ Khaled’s latest album “Grateful” debuted atop the weekly U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Monday.

“Grateful,” with songs such as “Shining” with Beyonce and Jay Z and “I’m the One” with Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Quavo, sold 149,000 album units, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

The Billboard 200 album chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).

Other new entries in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart this week include alt-rock group Imagine Dragons’ new album “Evolve” at No. 2, late pop star Prince’s reissued “Purple Rain” album at No. 4 and rockers 311 at No. 6 with “Mosaic.”

Last week’s chart-topper, Lorde’s “Melodrama,” dropped to No. 13 this week.

On the Digital Songs chart, which measures online single sales, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi’s summer hit “Despacito” featuring Justin Bieber continued its reign at No. 1 with another 136,000 copies sold. (rtr)

Dior fashion show celebrates 70 years of travelling spirit PARIS - French fashion house Christian Dior marked its 70th anniversary on Monday with a show staged outside the Invalides museum in Paris and inspired by its founder’s travels around the world.

On a fern-lined catwalk dotted with wooden lions and giraffes, designer Maria Grazia Chiuri presented the brand’s Autumn-Winter 2017/18 haute couture collection, revisiting the iconic “Bar” Jacket and grey skirt suits with a 1950s feel.

“Christian Dior travelled across the world since 1947. This time we made the five continents come to Paris,” Dior CEO and Chairman Sidney Toledano told Reuters after the show.

Christian Dior is one of the

world’s biggest and most famous fashion brands, worn by film legends from Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor to more recent stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman and singer Rihanna.

Chiuri was named as its first female creative director in July 2016 as Dior sought to connect with younger consumers and boost sales hit by the global luxury spending downturn and growing appetite for smaller and more local brands.

Monday’s show presented her second Haute Couture collection for Dior, which she joined from Valentino.

Toledano said his new creative director had attracted and younger clients from Asia, where demand for luxury goods is picking up, while retaining existing customers.

In France, he said, the election of President Emmanuel Macron is creating “greater confidence” and “an extremely positive spirit”.

French consumers splurged on new cars, smartphones and perfumes in May, the month Macron won the presidency. Their increased willingness to spend bodes well for growth in the second quarter, national statistics institute ISEE said last week.

Like its peers LVMH, Gucci or Hermes , Dior is benefiting from higher spending in Asia and a return of tourists to Europe.

Toledano said sales growth at Christian Dior Haute Couture and Maison Christian Dior as a whole was in the double-digits in the fourth quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017. (rtr)

Thai junta suspends new labour law, extends deadline after exodus

BANGKOK/MAHACHAI - Thailand’s junta delayed on Tuesday parts of a new labour law aimed at regulating the foreign workforce after the decree sparked panic and prompted more than 60,000 foreign workers to flee from the country. The military government, which has ruled since a 2014 coup, has invoked Article 44, a security order that gives it power to push through policy, to delay the law that imposes heavy fines on employers and employees who do not have work permits, a senior official said.

The original decree was issued in part to tackle human trafficking concerns raised by the international community, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam told reporters.

“The government had to issue this law because we are being watched by the foreign community in terms of ... human trafficking. If we don’t issue this law they will not buy our goods.

So we have to do it,” Wissanu said.

The U.S. State Department last month left Thailand on a Tier 2 Watchlist, just above the lowest ranking of Tier 3, in its annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report because it did not do enough to tackle human smuggling and trafficking. Wissanu said the government would delay

implementation of four sections of the law for six months.

He did not elaborate but the labour ministry said it would suspend parts of the law until January in order to give both workers and their employers more time to get their work permits. Thailand is a destination for many migrant workers from poorer neighbouring countries, including Myanmar and Cambodia.

Official estimates put the number of foreign workers at 3 million but rights groups say the real figure is far higher. Many work in Thailand without legal documents, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation by brokers and sometimes traffickers.

‘WORK NO THAI WANTS’ Myanmar said that on Monday, it received more than 5,000 workers returning from Thailand across their border. “Most of the workers went directly back to their home towns.

Aung Htay Win, a Myanmar labour ministry official. Migrants are predominately employed in low-skilled jobs in Thailand’s multi-billion dollar fishing sector, in agriculture, construction, manufacturing and as domestic workers.

Businesses have complained that the new regulations have caused a shortage of workers in the construction and fishing sectors. Property development and construction, which have had a stellar performance in an otherwise sluggish Thai economy, have felt the brunt of the departures.
