’Finding Dory’ Dominates ’Tarzan,’ Spielberg’s ‘The BFG’ Bombs

LOS ANGELES - “Finding Dory” dominated the Independence Day box office, overcoming a trio of new releases to provide the weekend’s biggest fireworks.

The Pixar release swam to the top of the charts for the third consecutive weekend, picking up $41.9 million to bring its domestic total to $372.2 million. The follow-up to “Finding Nemo” should end the four-day holiday with another $50.5 million in receipts. It is on pace to surpass “Toy Story 3” and its $415 million haul as the highest-grossing Pixar film in history on a domestic basis.

“It’s showing no signs of slowing down,” said Dave Hollis, distribution chief at Disney, Pixar’s parent company. “As people are weighing what to see, it stands out

as the only option that’s going to entertain everyone.”

The July 4th weekend is traditionally one of the movie business’ biggest, but this national holiday suffered from a weak crop of new releases, as costly adventures such as “The Legend of Tarzan” and “The BFG” failed to excite audiences. The influx of new releases did lift industry-wide grosses, and the weekend should be among the five biggest.

“There’s a lot of product out there,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “That leads to a lot of fragmentation and cannibalization, and a lot of spreading the wealth.”

With a smaller budget, “The Legend of Tarzan” might rank as a hit. But Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow spent lavishly to update Edgar Rice Burroughs’ jungle king stories, shelling out a reported $180 million to produce the picture and millions more to market it.

Despite the high costs, the film did better than projected, earning $38.1 million for the three-day weekend to take second place. It should make $44 million for the holiday, roughly $10 million more than analysts expected it would generate, but that may not be enough to cover the massive budget. David Yates, who directed several Harry Potter installments, was behind the camera on the film, with Alexander Skarsgard donning Tarzan’s loincloth and Margot Robbie serving as his Jane.

To make a profit, the film will have to resonate with foreign crowds. In its first weekend of international release, “The Legend of Tarzan” pulled in $18.8 million from 19 markets, including South Korea and Russia.

“You have to look at the whole worldwide results,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president, noting that the film has yet to open in major territories such as China.

“At the end of the day we always looked at this as a bigger play internationally,” he added. (rtr)

July 4 message from Putin to Obama: Let’s have better ties

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday in a July Fourth message to President Barack Obama that he hopes ties between the two countries will get back on track.

Relations between Moscow and Washington hit a post-Cold War low in 2014, when Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and threw its weight behind separatists in eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin, however, has recently sought rapprochement with the United States.

The Young Guard activists put up easels with the portraits and quotes of former world leaders that the activists claim were toppled by the United States, like Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych or Libyan President Moammar Gadhafi.

“Under its current leadership,

the United States has become a parasite state that attacks other countries under any pretext, violating their sovereignty, causing revolutions, using military force, killing civilians and their destroying statehood,” activist Denis Davydov said. “We call on the United States on the Independence Day not only to preserve their own independence but also respect the independence of other countries.”

rorists. In the first Bali bombing, our country was able to uncover the first to third generations of the terrorists.

Other countries can rarely do it. We are able to muzzle three generations,” he said.

Actually the current terrorists, said Hamidin, are not as good as that of the Bali bombers I. It is not the issue, but why young generation are so easily going radical, willing to sacrifice their life just to kill others?

However, he admitted that public awareness of not becoming radical is getting better. “Do not perceive if the ISIS entirely consists of Islam.

There are also atheists joining with them. Tomorrow, terrorist will not only involve the ideology,” said Hamidin.

On that account, prevention of terrorism cannot only be done by the state, but all the elements of society must be involved in it, including the mass media. On combating terrorism, the BNPT does three things: law enforcement, prosecution matters related to individuals or terrorist groups from coming into jail to treatment after being released from jail so that they are aware and able to return to normal society. the BNPT also makes an approach through cooperation between the ministries. Such cooperation cannot be avoided when preventing terrorism from developing in Indonesia.

An academician, Prof. Dr. Rai Setiabudhi, also agreed that Balinese people may not get complacent against terrorist acts although so far, the condition of Bali is conducive from terrorism efforts.

“Do not become complacent and lulled by the safe condition.

Increased vigilance must continue to be done. For example, it can be made through raid of migrants, checking hotels, inns and boarding houses.

Security forces especially police authority must continuously conduct raids and tighten the examinations at the entrance to Bali,” he said.

Customary villages, he continued, can take part and become the avantgarde in maintaining security in each region. There must be no gap for terrorists to enter into the Bali region.

“Let’s work together to increase alertness, especially in the backflow period after the Eid celebration. Do not let any opportunity be exploited by terrorists,” said Prof. Rai Setiabudhi. (rah)

Gilimanuk becomes an ocean of motorized homecomers LCT vessel crashes at LCM Pier

NEGARA - Homecoming traffic out of Bali at Gilimanuk continued on Sunday morning (Jul. 3). The entrance gates of Bali turned into an ocean of homecomers where vehicles occupied the entire road section at this village. Over the weekend, based on the data of the ASDP, there were hundreds of thousands of people leaving Bali with tens of thousands of motor vehicles.

The data at the Gilimanuk checkpoint indicated that from day seven before the Eid or Thursday (Jun. 30) through Sunday there have been 216,387 passengers, 47,165 motorcycles and 22,403 cars ferried.

In the meantime, when calculated from day twelve or Saturday (Jun. 26), there have been totally 64,296 motorcycles and 41,856 cars crossing. Then, the number of passengers, including inside the vehicle, reached 330,000 people or almost equal to the total population of Jembrana (2015).

This number will continue to grow until day one before the Eid. As observation of Bali Post from Sunday morning, the number of motorcycle continued to increase and so were the family cars continuing to connect until Sunday afternoon. In contrast to previous days, thousands

of motorized homecomers thronged Gilimanuk.

The climax occurred on Sunday morning, where the queue of motorcycles reached about two kilometers away from the harbor. Thus, they jostled each other and a lot of motorized homecomers broke through sidewalk.

“Normally the sidewalk is empty and taken advantage to unwind for hitchhiked passengers. Now, it is entirely taken by motorcycles,” lamented one of the residents telling reporters.

A number of sidewalks like the road section along the headman office were occupied by motorcycles.

When entering midday, the situation was increasingly crowded.

Moreover, the queue filled up the lane of road side in front of the Gilimanuk Market usually used for two lines. On the right side was filled up by trucks

and buses, and more than half was filled up by the queue of motorcycles.

Thus, the motorized homecomers were seen like an ocean of people.

A motorized homecomer, Nuranini, stated to have come up at Gilimanuk at 02:00 and was just about to board the ship around 09:00. This woman going home with her toddler admitted to sleep in a doorway. “Now, I am just about to go aboard, but still waiting for my husband standing in a queue in the tent,” she said when having a break in front of pontoon pier of Gilimanuk Harbor.

In the meantime, the entire piers were operated on Sunday morning.

Moreover, the LCM pier commonly used for maximally three vessels to moor was used for four to five vessels on Sunday morning. As a result, both LCT and passenger motor vessels coincided. Crowded LCM pier caused an LCT vessel having been loaded to run aground.

As is observed, the Pancar Indah LCT vessel going to sail could not move because it ran aground about 09:00. Receding seawater made the

vessel’s hull, chiefly the front side, stuck in the pier foundation. As a result, the whole truck freight having boarded onto the vessel should wait until high tide, while truck drivers took passenger vessel. From the information obtained, the vessel had been actually towed by another vessel, but the rope broke.

In the meantime, last Sunday amid the queue all the officers already made maximum efforts. The queue

could not be avoided by the number of vehicles coming almost simultaneously. Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, also came down to regulate the queue in the harbor area along with his team, while outside the harbor the queue of trucks still occurred with inter-provincial city buses. Truck lane was directly separated to LCM pier located at the end of the harbor passing identity card checkpoint and harbor exit post. (kmb26)

The Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST, is the size of 30 football fields and has been hewed out of a mountain in the poor southwestern province of Guizhou.

Scientists will now start debugging and trials of the telescope, Zheng Xiaonian, deputy head of the National Astronomical Observation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which built the telescope, told the official Xinhua news agency.

“The project has the potential to search for more strange objects to better understand the origin of the universe and boost the global hunt for extraterrestrial life,” the report paraphrased Zheng as saying.

The 1.2-billion yuan ($180 million) radio telescope would be a global leader for the next one to two decades, Zheng added.

The telescope, which has taken about five years to build, is expected to begin operations in

NASA’s Juno spacecraft prepares for cosmic date with Jupiter

LOS ANGELES — A solarpowered spacecraft is spinning toward Jupiter for the closest encounter with the biggest planet in our solar system.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft fires its main rocket engine late Monday to slow itself down from a speed of 150,000 mph (250,000 kph) and slip into orbit around Jupiter.

With Juno on autopilot, the delicately choreographed move comes without any help from ground controllers.

Juno is traveling through a hostile radiation environment, “but it should be able to withstand it,” said Kenny Starnes, program manager for Lockheed Martin, which built the spacecraft.

Juno’s camera and other instruments were switched off for the arrival so there won’t be any pictures at the moment the spacecraft reaches its destination. Scientists have promised close-up views of Jupiter when Juno skims the cloud tops during the 20-month, $1.1 billion mission.

The fifth rock from the sun and the heftiest planet in the solar system, Jupiter is what’s known as a gas giant — a ball of hydrogen and helium — unlike rocky Earth and Mars. With its billowy clouds and colorful stripes, Jupiter is an extreme world that likely formed first, shortly after the sun. Unlocking its history may hold clues to understanding how Earth and the rest of the solar system developed.

Named after Jupiter’s cloudpiercing wife, Juno is only the second mission designed to spend time at Jupiter. Galileo, launched in

1989, circled Jupiter for 14 years, beaming back splendid views of the planet and its numerous moons.

It uncovered signs of an ocean beneath the icy surface of Europa, considered a top target in the search for life outside Earth.

Juno’s mission: To peer through Jupiter’s cloud-socked atmosphere and map the interior from a unique vantage point above the poles.

Among the lingering questions: How much water exists? Is there a solid core? Why are Jupiter’s southern and northern lights the brightest in the solar system?

There’s also the mystery of its Great Red Spot. Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope revealed the centuries-old monster storm in Jupiter’s atmosphere is shrinking.

The trek to Jupiter, spanning nearly five years and 1.8 billion miles (2.8 billion kilometers), took Juno on a tour of the inner solar system followed by a swing past Earth that catapulted it beyond the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Along the way, Juno became the first spacecraft to cruise this far out powered by the sun, beating Europe’s comet-chasing Rosetta spacecraft. A trio of massive solar wings sticks out from Juno like blades from a windmill, generating 500 watts of power to run its nine instruments.

Plans called for Juno to swoop within 3,000 miles (5,000 kilometers) of Jupiter’s clouds — closer than previous missions — to map the planet’s gravity and magnetic fields. (ap)

TABANAN - To achieve a rabies-free Bali, Tabanan Livestock Agency held a mass vaccination beyond schedule. Such mass vaccination is conducted regularly every Sunday and the implementation began on Sunday (Jul. 3) at Dangin Carik Square, Jalan Pahlawan, including Dajan Peken hamlet, Dajan Peken, Tabanan.

The Head of the Tabanan Livestock Agency, Wayan Kotio, explained that the regular vaccination every Sunday is expected to target the dogs that have not been vaccinated by the owner when mass vaccination was scheduled at their hamlet.

He continued the mass vaccination targets 817 hamlets scattered in 133 villages in Tabanan.

However, not all dogs are vaccinated on the mass vaccination schedule because the owners may not have time to come to local meeting hall on the day of vaccination with a variety of reasons.

On that account, the vaccination held regularly every Sunday will target pet dogs that have not been vaccinated on mass vaccination activities. “We deliberately do this on holiday so that people are not busy and do not work. It will continue to be done until Bali is declared free from rabies,” explained Kotio.

For regular vaccination activi-

ties every Sunday, added Kotio, the Tabanan Livestock Agency got assistance from the Bali Livestock as many as 50,000 vaccines. Rabies dog bite cases in Tabanan have reduced in 2016 when compared to 2015.

In 2015, the positive bite case is recorded to reach an average of five people per month or approximately 60 people while until June 2016 it has been recorded to reach 19 positive bite cases. Nevertheless, the positive bite case means that there are still rabid dogs roaming around and transmitting the virus in Tabanan. Therefore, regular vaccination in dogs is very important.

“This vaccine should be repeated once a year,” said Kotio.

He asserted that the vaccines used in dogs were not charged. On that account, he expected people not to reluctantly bring along their dog to be vaccinated even though the mass vaccination schedule has passed. “The dog can be brought to the Livestock Agency if the dog has not been vaccinated in the mass vaccination. It’s free of charge,” he said.

In addition to vaccinating pet dogs, Kotio also appealed to people not to let the dog roam around.

Kintamani Festival judged to bring in no positive impact on tourism

BANGLI - Kintamani Festival and Lake Batur Festival having been held to promote the tourism of Bangli, Kintamani in particular, is considered not to result in too positive impact on tourism development of Kintamani. Festival activities costing hundreds of millions of rupiah are considered to feature too many ceremonial activities rather than cultural attractions. In the future, the festival is expected to be well prepared. In order to be able to bring in many visitors, dissemination of information to tourism players and wider community is expected to be carried out far in advance.

This was revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House of Representatives, Komang Carles, Saturday (Jul. 2). He assessed the Kintamani Festival and Lake Batur Festival ever held by the government of Bangli has not given positive impact on tourism development of Kintamani. The festival that ideally could bring in many visitors seems to have no reverberation due to lack of dissemination by the organizer.

“All this time, the festival having been implemented seems to lack of promotion. Many tourism players including the residents of Bangli do not know the festival.

But only a few that know,” he explained.

Besides, the organizer is also judged to fill in the festival with more ceremonial activities than cultural attractions. So, the festival activities seem boring. According to him, the Kintamani Festival should give more emphases on cultural attractions such as competition of baleganjur gamelan orchestra, Kang Ching Wie dance, and other cultural attractions owned by 15 villages at the Batur

lakeside. “The attraction must be propagated. If necessary, the 48 villages must be engaged in the provision of cultural attractions,” said Carles.

Aside from cultural attractions, according to him, the festival should also be propagated with a variety of culinary exhibitions and typical handicraft products of Bangli. “In short, we must feature cultural, culinary and handicraft potential. These are what we sell to travelers,” he added.

Although the Kintamani Festival implementation so far is judged to have no impact on tourism development, he remained to hope such an event can be continued this year. He in the parliament is ready to support the budget for the implementation of the event as long as all the shortcomings all this time can be improved in the future.

“Hopefully, the next festival can be organized, but with careful planning. Prior to the festival, there must be dissemination of information to tourism players and the public at large so that the festival can have a positive impact on the community. Do not make promo-

tion a week before the event,” he hoped.

A total of five dolphins are treated in three special pools. Dolphins are fed with fresh fish every morning and afternoon.

He even showed the five-year work plan as a conservation organization, CV. Melka Satwa. “Actually there is no (torture of dolphin—Ed).

We have complete permission. The account owner posting the information (on Instagram and Facebook— Ed) have never met me. I do not know where he got the video from,” he said, Saturday (Jul. 2).

He explained that each animal coming in and maintained by CV. Melka Satwa belongs to deposited animal. The accusation of getting dolphin in the coastal area of Lovina and transferred to hotel is considered to be excessive even though the posting does not directly mention the name of location.

DENPASAR - Chris Smalling has been in hospital in Bali, Indonesia with food poisoning which led to him fainting, his club Manchester United said in a statement.

A source close to the club told ESPN FC earlier on Monday that United were investigating after a picture of Smalling on a hospital bed surfaced on social media, and a club statement was released giving the official reason.

The statement added that Smalling is “now feeling fine” and that the player thanked everyone for their support. Smalling has been in Bali on holiday ahead of reporting back for preseason training later this month.

United players who have been involved in the European Championship will return to the club later than those not involved. Players who were not given delayed holidays, after international duty, begin work this week with new manager Jose Mourinho.

The 26-year-old had played the full 90 minutes in all four of England’s matches at the European Championship in France before go-

As Japan re-embraces nuclear power, safety warnings persist

TOKYO - Japan’s re-embrace of nuclear power, on display last week with the recertification of two ageing reactors, is prompting some critics to warn that Tokyo is neglecting the lessons of Fukushima.

In the first such step since the 2011 disaster, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) on June 20 approved Kansai Electric Power Co’s application to extend the life of two reactors beyond 40 years.

As it became clear the NRA was going to allow the extensions, a former commissioner broke a silence maintained since he left the agency in 2014 and said “a sense of crisis” over safety prompted him to go public and urge more attention to earthquake risk.

Kunihiko Shimazaki, who was a commissioner from 2012 to 2014, said a powerful quake in April that killed 69 on Kyushu island showed the risk to some of Japan’s 42 operable nuclear reactors was being underestimated.

“I cannot stand by without doing anything. We may have an-

other tragedy and, if that happens, it could not be something that was ‘beyond expectations’,” he said, referring to a common description of the catastrophic chain of events after the earthquake and tsunami that led to the Fukushima meltdowns.

The NRA has said it would take into account Shimazaki’s position in some of its assessments.

Separately when asked about the operating extensions of the reactors, a spokesman for the regulator referred Reuters to remarks by agency chairman, Shunichi Tanaka, on the day of the extensions, when he said: “It does not guarantee absolute safety but it means the reactors have cleared the safety standards.”

According to the World Nuclear Association, an industry body, early reactors were designed for a life of about 30 years, while newer plants can operate up to 60 years.

A 2012 Japanese law also limits the life of all reactors to 40 years, allowing for licence extensions only in exceptional circumstances. (rtr)

Pauline Hanson, founder of the controversial far right One Nation party, used the political limbo that has resulted from Saturday’s close vote to push her far-right agenda that first won her international notoriety in 1996, warning that Australia was being “swamped by Asians”.

seen four prime ministers in three years. Instead, it left Turnbull’s own leadership in question less than a year after he ousted then prime minister Tony Abbott in a party-room coup.

“I think in the end he should be asking himself if he has done the Liberal Party a service or a disservice,” Corey Bernardi, a senator from Turnbull’s Liberal Party, said.

Labor leader Bill Shorten also called on Turnbull to quit, likening his position to that of British Prime Minister David Cameron after last month’s “Brexit” vote.

Some Venezuelans who had given up produce as an unaffordable luxury are now turning to urban farming to get vegetables back into their diets.

With the help of a governmentsponsored urban farming campaign, the head of the newly created Ministry of Urban Agriculture, Lorena Freitez, hopes home gardens will make up 20 percent of the food supply by 2019.

“Urban agriculture will cushion the effects of the shortages. Cities will not be so dependent on imports, and we will make great strides in food sovereignty,” she said.

Now, amid the narrow roads and crumbling shacks of one of South America’s largest slums, a careful look yields something unexpected:

a carefully tended tomato plant and a bush of basil leaves. The family members growing the plants hope that in a few months, they’ll be eating vegetables again.

A team of researchers from three leading local universities found that 12 percent of the people in Caracas skip meals. Researchers say that is a sharp increase from a few years ago, when the price of oil had not yet crashed, and many Venezuelans still found it consistently easy to get the food they needed.

“The thing is, Venezuelans aren’t used to this,” said Central University professor Marianella Herrera.

Francisco Salazar, head of a community council that works in Caracas slums, says he and his neighbors are growing beets, black beans, lettuce and dozens of other vegetables in a large community garden. But he worries it won’t be enough.

“We don’t have flour, we don’t have pasta, we don’t have rice,” he said. “What we have is a Band-Aid that’s not going to really solve the problem.” (ap)

Kuwait posts $18B deficit as lower oil prices slash revenue

KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait’s finance minister says the oil-exporting country has posted a budget deficit of $18.2 billion for the most recent fiscal year as lower crude prices slash into government revenue.

Anas al-Saleh, who is also the acting oil minister, was quoted in the state-run Kuwait News Agency on Sunday as saying the deficit was nearly $9 billion less than budgeted for. The new fiscal year in Kuwait began April 1.

Kuwait’s budget deficit reflects the impact lower oil prices have had on crude exporters, particularly Gulf Arab monarchies that rely on oil revenues to support generous subsidies, welfare benefits and public sector wages.

Al-Saleh was quoted as saying Kuwait is “facing serious challenges” that require trimming spending, diversifying the economy, creating more jobs for Kuwaitis and attracting greater foreign investment. (ap)

Ignasius also urged the authorities to take firm action against any violation of traffic regulations, especially the one that endangers the safety of other travelers.

Nearly 120 killed in overnight Baghdad bombings claimed by IS BAGHDAD - Nearly 120 people were killed and 200 wounded in two bombings overnight in Baghdad, most of them in a busy shopping area as residents celebrated Ramadan, police and medical sources said on Sunday.

The attack on the shopping area of Karrada is the deadliest since U.S.-backed Iraqi forces last month scored a major victory when it dislodged Islamic State from their stronghold of Falluja, an hour’s drive west of the capital. It is also the deadliest so far this year.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had ordered the offensive after a series of bombings in Baghdad, saying Falluja served as a launchpad for such attacks on the capital.

However, bombings have continued.

A convoy carrying Abadi who had come to tour the site of the bombings was pelted with stones and bottles by residents, angry at what they felt were false promises of better security.

A refrigerator truck packed with explosives blew up in the central district of Karrada, killing 115 people and injuring at least 200. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated online by supporters of the ultra-hardline Sunni group.

It said the blast was a suicide bombing.

Karrada was busy at the time as Iraqis eat out and shop late during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends next week with the Eid al-Fitr festival.

The White House on Sunday said the attack only strengthened the United States’

resolve to confront Islamic State. “We remain united with the Iraqi people and government in our combined efforts to destroy ISIL,” said the White House statement, referring to Islamic State.

Videos posted on social media showed people running after the SUV convoy of Abadi as he left Karrada after touring the scene, throwing pavement stones, bottles of water, empty buckets and slippers, venting their anger at the inability of the security forces to protect the area.

Abadi declared three days of mourning for the victims, according to state-run media that also cited him saying he understood the angry reaction of residents.

Another video posted on social media showed a large blaze in the main street of Karrada, a largely Shi’ite district with a small Christian community and a few Sunni mosques.

Reuters TV footage taken in the morning showed at least four buildings severely damaged or partly collapsed, including a shopping mall believed to be the target, and gutted cars scattered all around.

The toll climbed during the day as rescuers pulled out more bodies from under the rubble and people succumbed to their injuries.

The witness said the area had been closed off by security forces, with helicopters hovering overhead. The explosion appeared to have taken place about 20 m (65 feet) from an outer checkpoint of the consulate, he added. Concrete barriers protect the street outside the consulate.

It is just the fourth time since the tournament started in 1877 that the weather has forced organisers to throw open the doors on what is traditionally a rest day for the players. The last time was in 2004, the first in 1991.

“To play on Sunday, on this Centre Court, I think it is very special,” Berdych, 30, said in a court-side interview.

“I am one of the guys that really love traditions ... it is just the fourth time in such a long history of the championship that we are playing on the middle Sunday.

“I get a chance to play, I get a chance to play on Centre Court, so it can’t be better than that.”

As a permanent fixture of the top 10 since 2010 and a runner-up at Wimbledon, losing to Rafa Nadal in the same year, Berdych knows class when he sees it and heralded his 19-yearold opponent, seeded 24, as a future grand slam winner.

“He is definitely the guy are we going to hear about a lot,” he said of Zverev, who has equalled his best slam result after also reaching round three of the French Open.

Zverev dismissed any pressure from being talked up as a possible future number one.

“There’s been a million future number ones that never got to number one. There’s other guys right now who want to become number one after Novak,” he told reporters.

“The contract is a long-term decision and isn’t influenced by a race incident,” team boss Toto Wolff told reporters at the Red Bull Ring.

An exasperated Wolff, who has a 30 percent stake in the team as well as being Mercedes motorsport director, had earlier slammed the latest clash between the two title rivals as ‘brainless’.

Stewards blamed Rosberg for causing the last lap incident, imposing a meaningless time penalty and reprimand.

The German, who has been at Mercedes since 2010 and turned 31 last week, finished fourth while triple world champion Hamilton won to cut Rosberg’s overall lead to 11 points with 12 races remain-

ing.

While Hamilton has a contract to 2018, Rosberg’s future is in discussion. Austria’s former McLaren and Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger is negotiating with Mercedes on his behalf.

He told Reuters no deal had been reached yet and whether Rosberg stayed was up to Mercedes.

“It would be very short-term thinking of everybody,” he added when asked about a possible negative impact of a collision that denied the team a one-two finish.

“We are seeing here a race where somebody did an outstanding job, and then a couple of circumstances happened in the last lap.”

Rosberg has won five of nine

races so far this season and, despite some speculation about a possible Ferrari move, has said he expects to remain at Mercedes for years to come.

“It feels great to be here, and the team’s also very happy with me,” he said. “I feel really very much at home. This is my racing family here and this is where I want to be for the foreseeable future.”

Asked on Sunday whether anything had changed, he replied that he was just disappointed to have lost another victory.

“I had it in the bag and would have loved to win here. To lose it in such a way in the last lap is unbelievably hard,” said the German, who had been chasing a hat-trick of Austria wins.

SAINT-DENIS — Too small. Too frail. No future in French football. Antoine Griezmann defied plenty of skeptics by becoming the highest scorer at the European Championship.

France’s hopes of a first title since Euro 2000 rest largely on the slim shoulders of Griezmann, who is on the small side for an attacking player at 1.76 meters (5-foot-9).

The 25-year-old forward scored with an excellent finish and set up two more goals as France swatted aside Iceland 5-2 on Sunday to set up a semifinal against Germany.

“It will be great if he carries on being the top scorer in the competition,” France coach Didier Deschamps said. “He’s a very efficient player and is excellent technically. We’ll need more of the same from him on Thursday.”

He may be the toast of French football today, but it hasn’t always been that way.

There was no comfortable route through the well-reputed French football academies for Griezmann, who was so exasperated at being rejected by several French clubs for his small stature that he went to Spain as a teenager, joining Real Sociedad in 2008.

How Lyon and other French clubs must cringe with embarrassment now. Even his current club — Champions League runner-up Atletico Madrid — may struggle to keep him. His affable and calm demeanor belies a tough interior. His difficult route to the top has made for a refreshingly blunt speaker.

For a player of his size, he is remarkably good in the air, uncoiling his slight frame to unleash considerable power. Two of his four goals at this tournament have been headers - which he recently said he has been practicing since the age of eight. But that’s only part of what defines his game.

Griezmann’s awareness, touch and skill — allied to pace, a low center of gravity and great movement — make him extremely difficult to mark and he has the uncanny gift that top players have of finding space. “When I’m close to the penalty area, that’s where I feel more comfortable,” he said on Sunday.

When he’s not scoring, he’s also dropping deep and spraying cushioned passes around with unwavering accuracy. He is also a lethal one-on-one finisher, as he showed against Ireland last weekend with his second goal in a 2-1 win.

Germany’s Khedira out of France semi-final

EVIAN - Holding midfielder Sami Khedira will miss Germany’s Euro 2016 semi-final against hosts France after he sustained an adductor muscle injury in the quarter-final victory over Italy, coach Joachim Loew said on Monday.

Khedira, who had played in all of Germany’s matches at the tournament, was withdrawn early in Saturday’s game after over-stretching during a challenge for the ball.

“Sami Khedira won’t play for us on Thursday. We will do everything for him to be available for a potential final,” Loew told reporters of the 29-year-old Juventus player. “I will have to bring in new names.

There will be personnel changes in the lineup.”

Germany are already without suspended central defender Mats Hummels and injured striker Mario Gomez, who will miss the rest of the tournament after also picking up an injury in the shootout victory over Italy. Gomez, who will remain with the team, is the only specialist striker in the German squad.

Loew said he had enough options in midfield, naming Emre Can as one of Khedira’s possible replacements due to his versatility.

“He is a player who can be used in a lot of different positions. In training, he has been very convincing. Physically he is very strong and skilled. I think that a player like Can would do our game a lot of good.”

BORDEAUX — Sweat and tears is what Italy coach Antonio Conte demanded from his players, and sweat and tears is what he got during a two-year reign that ended in the quarterfinals of the European Championship.

Conte, who is leaving the Azzurri to join Chelsea in the English Premier League, transmits passion and the desire to succeed to his players. And both those qualities were on show during Italy’s defeat on penalties to world champion Germany on Saturday.

Captain Gianluigi Buffon was crying as he left the pitch, while another experienced player Andrea Barzagli also broke down while giving an interview.

“It’s a huge disappointment, because we really gave everything,” Barzagli sobbed. “Unfortunately we lost and nothing will remain of everything good we have done because when you go out .... sorry .... only disappointment is left and that’s it.

“And in a few years’ time no one will remember anything about this Italy side which gave everything.”

That depends very much on how Italy does under incoming coach Giampiero Ventura.

The 68-year-old has won nothing, apart from a third division

title during a 35-year managerial career. But he has earned plenty of plaudits for the work he did with Torino, where he forged a team which was worth more than the sum of its parts — much like Conte did with Italy.

And Ventura will have more to work with than Conte, who took over after the disappointment of the 2014 World Cup. The Azzurri were eliminated at the group stage in Brazil — prompting the immediate resignation of coach Cesare Prandelli and the president of the Italian football federation.

“Let’s remember from where we came from,” current federation President Carlo Tavecchio said.

“We returned ... with a beaten team and no federation. Then we gave the national team to a leader, and now we will start again from this Italy side.

“There are good foundations.

It’s unthinkable the group could break up. We gave the job to Ventura, who has the same way of thinking.” Conte has indeed laid good foundations, having molded Italy into the image of himself.

“I am proud of the legacy we are leaving,” Conte said. “We wanted to transmit to the fans our passion,

enthusiasm and a love for this shirt and this team.”

The Azzurri may lack star quality, but they more than make up for in their strength as a group.

So strong is their team spirit that defender Leonardo Bonucci said after the Germany defeat: “Even though we have only been together about a month and a half, it feels like they have been my teammates for years and years in the dressing room.”

Italy arrived at Euro 2016 with an aging team that was much criticized by the media back home.

But it advanced as the winner of Group E with a match to spare and beat two-time defending champion Spain 2-0 in the round of 16.

“We have to be intelligent in continuing on this path,” Bonucci said. “We’ll leave Ventura in peace to create his group, the one that was here at the European Championship and to take Italy forward, because we deserved this. We grew game after game and now we have to continue.”

Nearly 120 killed in overnight Baghdad bombings claimed by IS BAGHDAD - Nearly 120 people were killed and 200 wounded in two bombings overnight in Baghdad, most of them in a busy shopping area as residents celebrated Ramadan, police and medical sources said on Sunday.

The attack on the shopping area of Karrada is the deadliest since U.S.-backed Iraqi forces last month scored a major victory when it dislodged Islamic State from their stronghold of Falluja, an hour’s drive west of the capital. It is also the deadliest so far this year.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had ordered the offensive after a series of bombings in Baghdad, saying Falluja served as a launchpad for such attacks on the capital.

However, bombings have continued.

A convoy carrying Abadi who had come to tour the site of the bombings was pelted with stones and bottles by residents, angry at what they felt were false promises of better security.

A refrigerator truck packed with explosives blew up in the central district of Karrada, killing 115 people and injuring at least 200. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated online by supporters of the ultra-hardline Sunni group.

It said the blast was a suicide bombing.

Karrada was busy at the time as Iraqis eat out and shop late during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends next week with the Eid al-Fitr festival.

The White House on Sunday said the attack only strengthened the United States’

resolve to confront Islamic State. “We remain united with the Iraqi people and government in our combined efforts to destroy ISIL,” said the White House statement, referring to Islamic State.

Videos posted on social media showed people running after the SUV convoy of Abadi as he left Karrada after touring the scene, throwing pavement stones, bottles of water, empty buckets and slippers, venting their anger at the inability of the security forces to protect the area.

Abadi declared three days of mourning for the victims, according to state-run media that also cited him saying he understood the angry reaction of residents.

Another video posted on social media showed a large blaze in the main street of Karrada, a largely Shi’ite district with a small Christian community and a few Sunni mosques.

Reuters TV footage taken in the morning showed at least four buildings severely damaged or partly collapsed, including a shopping mall believed to be the target, and gutted cars scattered all around.

The toll climbed during the day as rescuers pulled out more bodies from under the rubble and people succumbed to their injuries.

A State Department message to U.S. citizens in Saudi Arabia reiterated advice to keep aware of their surroundings and take extra precautions when travelling.

The witness said the area had been closed off by security forces, with helicopters hovering overhead. The explosion appeared to have taken place about 20 m (65 feet) from an outer checkpoint of the consulate, he added. Concrete barriers protect the street outside the consulate.

Islamic State has carried out a series of bombing and shooting attacks in Saudi Arabia since mid-2014 that have killed scores of people, mostly members of the Shi’ite Muslim minority and security services. (rtr)

Some Venezuelans who had given up produce as an unaffordable luxury are now turning to urban farming to get vegetables back into their diets.

With the help of a governmentsponsored urban farming campaign, the head of the newly created Ministry of Urban Agriculture, Lorena Freitez, hopes home gardens will make up 20 percent of the food supply by 2019.

“Urban agriculture will cushion the effects of the shortages. Cities will not be so dependent on imports, and we will make great strides in food sovereignty,” she said.

Now, amid the narrow roads and crumbling shacks of one of South America’s largest slums, a careful look yields something unexpected:

a carefully tended tomato plant and a bush of basil leaves. The family members growing the plants hope that in a few months, they’ll be eating vegetables again.

A team of researchers from three leading local universities found that 12 percent of the people in Caracas skip meals. Researchers say that is a sharp increase from a few years ago, when the price of oil had not yet crashed, and many Venezuelans still found it consistently easy to get the food they needed.

“The thing is, Venezuelans aren’t used to this,” said Central University professor Marianella Herrera.

Francisco Salazar, head of a community council that works in Caracas slums, says he and his neighbors are growing beets, black beans, lettuce and dozens of other vegetables in a large community garden. But he worries it won’t be enough.

“We don’t have flour, we don’t have pasta, we don’t have rice,” he said. “What we have is a Band-Aid that’s not going to really solve the problem.” (ap)

Kuwait posts $18B deficit as lower oil prices slash revenue

KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait’s finance minister says the oil-exporting country has posted a budget deficit of $18.2 billion for the most recent fiscal year as lower crude prices slash into government revenue.

Anas al-Saleh, who is also the acting oil minister, was quoted in the state-run Kuwait News Agency on Sunday as saying the deficit was nearly $9 billion less than budgeted for. The new fiscal year in Kuwait began April 1.

Kuwait’s budget deficit reflects the impact lower oil prices have had on crude exporters, particularly Gulf Arab monarchies that rely on oil revenues to support generous subsidies, welfare benefits and public sector wages.

Al-Saleh was quoted as saying Kuwait is “facing serious challenges” that require trimming spending, diversifying the economy, creating more jobs for Kuwaitis and attracting greater foreign investment. (ap)

A total of five dolphins are treated in three special pools. Dolphins are fed with fresh fish every morning and afternoon.

DENPASAR - Chris Smalling has been in hospital in Bali, Indonesia with food poisoning which led to him fainting, his club Manchester United said in a statement.

A source close to the club told ESPN FC earlier on Monday that United were investigating after a picture of Smalling on a hospital bed surfaced on social media, and a club statement was released giving the official reason.

The statement added that Smalling is “now feeling fine” and that the player thanked everyone for their support. Smalling has been in Bali on holiday ahead of reporting back for preseason training later this month.

United players who have been involved in the European Championship will return to the club later than those not involved. Players who were not given delayed holidays, after international duty, begin work this week with new manager Jose Mourinho.

The 26-year-old had played the full 90 minutes in all four of England’s matches at the European Championship in France before go-

As Japan re-embraces nuclear power, safety warnings persist

TOKYO - Japan’s re-embrace of nuclear power, on display last week with the recertification of two ageing reactors, is prompting some critics to warn that Tokyo is neglecting the lessons of Fukushima.

In the first such step since the 2011 disaster, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) on June 20 approved Kansai Electric Power Co’s application to extend the life of two reactors beyond 40 years.

As it became clear the NRA was going to allow the extensions, a former commissioner broke a silence maintained since he left the agency in 2014 and said “a sense of crisis” over safety prompted him to go public and urge more attention to earthquake risk.

Kunihiko Shimazaki, who was a commissioner from 2012 to 2014, said a powerful quake in April that killed 69 on Kyushu island showed the risk to some of Japan’s 42 operable nuclear reactors was being underestimated.

“I cannot stand by without doing anything. We may have an-

other tragedy and, if that happens, it could not be something that was ‘beyond expectations’,” he said, referring to a common description of the catastrophic chain of events after the earthquake and tsunami that led to the Fukushima meltdowns.

The NRA has said it would take into account Shimazaki’s position in some of its assessments.

Separately when asked about the operating extensions of the reactors, a spokesman for the regulator referred Reuters to remarks by agency chairman, Shunichi Tanaka, on the day of the extensions, when he said: “It does not guarantee absolute safety but it means the reactors have cleared the safety standards.”

According to the World Nuclear Association, an industry body, early reactors were designed for a life of about 30 years, while newer plants can operate up to 60 years.

A 2012 Japanese law also limits the life of all reactors to 40 years, allowing for licence extensions only in exceptional circumstances. (rtr)

Pauline Hanson, founder of the controversial far right One Nation party, used the political limbo that has resulted from Saturday’s close vote to push her far-right agenda that first won her international notoriety in 1996, warning that Australia was being “swamped by Asians”.

The power vacuum that allowed Hanson to re-emerge showed just how badly Turnbull’s gamble of dissolving both houses of parliament, to clear out minor parties and independents he said were blocking his reformist agenda, had failed.

Saturday’s election was meant to end political turmoil that had

seen four prime ministers in three years. Instead, it left Turnbull’s own leadership in question less than a year after he ousted then prime minister Tony Abbott in a party-room coup.

“I think in the end he should be asking himself if he has done the Liberal Party a service or a disservice,” Corey Bernardi, a senator from Turnbull’s Liberal Party, said.

Labor leader Bill Shorten also called on Turnbull to quit, likening his position to that of British Prime Minister David Cameron after last month’s “Brexit” vote.

Turnbull, acting as caretaker prime minister while vote counting continues, appeared to have underestimated the protest vote that stole support from both major parties and must now negotiate with minor parties and independents to retain power. (rtr)

The Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST, is the size of 30 football fields and has been hewed out of a mountain in the poor southwestern province of Guizhou.

Scientists will now start debugging and trials of the telescope, Zheng Xiaonian, deputy head of the National Astronomical Observation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which built the telescope, told the official Xinhua news agency.

“The project has the potential to search for more strange objects to better understand the origin of the universe and boost the global hunt for extraterrestrial life,” the report paraphrased Zheng as saying.

The 1.2-billion yuan ($180 million) radio telescope would be a global leader for the next one to two decades, Zheng added.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft prepares for cosmic date with Jupiter

LOS ANGELES — A solarpowered spacecraft is spinning toward Jupiter for the closest encounter with the biggest planet in our solar system.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft fires its main rocket engine late Monday to slow itself down from a speed of 150,000 mph (250,000 kph) and slip into orbit around Jupiter.

With Juno on autopilot, the delicately choreographed move comes without any help from ground controllers.

Juno is traveling through a hostile radiation environment, “but it should be able to withstand it,” said Kenny Starnes, program manager for Lockheed Martin, which built the spacecraft.

Juno’s camera and other instruments were switched off for the arrival so there won’t be any pictures at the moment the spacecraft reaches its destination. Scientists have promised close-up views of Jupiter when Juno skims the cloud tops during the 20-month, $1.1 billion mission.

The fifth rock from the sun and the heftiest planet in the solar system, Jupiter is what’s known as a gas giant — a ball of hydrogen and helium — unlike rocky Earth and Mars. With its billowy clouds and colorful stripes, Jupiter is an extreme world that likely formed first, shortly after the sun. Unlocking its history may hold clues to understanding how Earth and the rest of the solar system developed.

Named after Jupiter’s cloudpiercing wife, Juno is only the second mission designed to spend time at Jupiter. Galileo, launched in

1989, circled Jupiter for 14 years, beaming back splendid views of the planet and its numerous moons.

It uncovered signs of an ocean beneath the icy surface of Europa, considered a top target in the search for life outside Earth.

Juno’s mission: To peer through Jupiter’s cloud-socked atmosphere and map the interior from a unique vantage point above the poles.

Among the lingering questions: How much water exists? Is there a solid core? Why are Jupiter’s southern and northern lights the brightest in the solar system?

There’s also the mystery of its Great Red Spot. Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope revealed the centuries-old monster storm in Jupiter’s atmosphere is shrinking.

The trek to Jupiter, spanning nearly five years and 1.8 billion miles (2.8 billion kilometers), took Juno on a tour of the inner solar system followed by a swing past Earth that catapulted it beyond the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Along the way, Juno became the first spacecraft to cruise this far out powered by the sun, beating Europe’s comet-chasing Rosetta spacecraft. A trio of massive solar wings sticks out from Juno like blades from a windmill, generating 500 watts of power to run its nine instruments.

TABANAN - To achieve a rabies-free Bali, Tabanan Livestock Agency held a mass vaccination beyond schedule. Such mass vaccination is conducted regularly every Sunday and the implementation began on Sunday (Jul. 3) at Dangin Carik Square, Jalan Pahlawan, including Dajan Peken hamlet, Dajan Peken, Tabanan.

The Head of the Tabanan Livestock Agency, Wayan Kotio, explained that the regular vaccination every Sunday is expected to target the dogs that have not been vaccinated by the owner when mass vaccination was scheduled at their hamlet.

He continued the mass vaccination targets 817 hamlets scattered in 133 villages in Tabanan.

However, not all dogs are vaccinated on the mass vaccination schedule because the owners may not have time to come to local meeting hall on the day of vaccination with a variety of reasons.

On that account, the vaccination held regularly every Sunday will target pet dogs that have not been vaccinated on mass vaccination activities. “We deliberately do this on holiday so that people are not busy and do not work. It will continue to be done until Bali is declared free from rabies,” explained Kotio.

ties every Sunday, added Kotio, the Tabanan Livestock Agency got assistance from the Bali Livestock as many as 50,000 vaccines. Rabies dog bite cases in Tabanan have reduced in 2016 when compared to 2015.

In 2015, the positive bite case is recorded to reach an average of five people per month or approximately 60 people while until June 2016 it has been recorded to reach 19 positive bite cases. Nevertheless, the positive bite case means that there are still rabid dogs roaming around and transmitting the virus in Tabanan. Therefore, regular vaccination in dogs is very important.

“This vaccine should be repeated once a year,” said Kotio.

He asserted that the vaccines used in dogs were not charged. On that account, he expected people not to reluctantly bring along their dog to be vaccinated even though the mass vaccination schedule has passed. “The dog can be brought to the Livestock Agency if the dog has not been vaccinated in the mass vaccination. It’s free of charge,” he said.

In addition to vaccinating pet dogs, Kotio also appealed to people not to let the dog roam around.

Kintamani Festival judged to bring in no positive impact on tourism

BANGLI - Kintamani Festival and Lake Batur Festival having been held to promote the tourism of Bangli, Kintamani in particular, is considered not to result in too positive impact on tourism development of Kintamani. Festival activities costing hundreds of millions of rupiah are considered to feature too many ceremonial activities rather than cultural attractions. In the future, the festival is expected to be well prepared. In order to be able to bring in many visitors, dissemination of information to tourism players and wider community is expected to be carried out far in advance.

This was revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House of Representatives, Komang Carles, Saturday (Jul. 2). He assessed the Kintamani Festival and Lake Batur Festival ever held by the government of Bangli has not given positive impact on tourism development of Kintamani. The festival that ideally could bring in many visitors seems to have no reverberation due to lack of dissemination by the organizer.

“All this time, the festival having been implemented seems to lack of promotion. Many tourism players including the residents of Bangli do not know the festival.

But only a few that know,” he explained.

Besides, the organizer is also judged to fill in the festival with more ceremonial activities than cultural attractions. So, the festival activities seem boring. According to him, the Kintamani Festival should give more emphases on cultural attractions such as competition of baleganjur gamelan orchestra, Kang Ching Wie dance, and other cultural attractions owned by 15 villages at the Batur

lakeside. “The attraction must be propagated. If necessary, the 48 villages must be engaged in the provision of cultural attractions,” said Carles.

Aside from cultural attractions, according to him, the festival should also be propagated with a variety of culinary exhibitions and typical handicraft products of Bangli. “In short, we must feature cultural, culinary and handicraft potential. These are what we sell to travelers,” he added.

Although the Kintamani Festival implementation so far is judged to have no impact on tourism development, he remained to hope such an event can be continued this year. He in the parliament is ready to support the budget for the implementation of the event as long as all the shortcomings all this time can be improved in the future.

“Hopefully, the next festival can be organized, but with careful planning. Prior to the festival, there must be dissemination of information to tourism players and the public at large so that the festival can have a positive impact on the community. Do not make promo-

tion a week before the event,” he hoped.

When met recently, the Head of the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, I Wayan Adnyana, claimed to be unable to confirm whether the Kintamani Festival will be held again this year. He said that to organize a festival featuring many cultural attractions need large funding. “It will depend on the availability of fund later on,” he explained.

He added that as a commitment of the Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, the agency is currently focusing on the repair of supporting tourism facilities, especially in the area of Kintamani. A number of damaged tourism facilities, especially at Penelokan will be repaired. Likewise some shortages of tourism facilities will soon be built. “In essence, we still make improvement in the facility first,” he said.

He actually very much deplored if the Kintamani Festival can no longer be held continuously. According to him, Kintamani Festival held last November and Lake Batur Festival held a few years ago are able to be an effective means to promote tourism of Kintamani both in terms of the beauty of panorama and indigenous culture of local community.

“In our opinion, the implementation of Kintamani Festival is very effective for tourism promotion of Bangli even though it cannot bring in an instant result,” said Adnyana. (kmb40)

According to him, Bali remains potential to be a terrorist target and if it is not addressed together, the tourism development continues to increase. “I am afraid if this nation has forgotten the efforts to prevent terrorism because having been preoccupied by other issues. As the latest information, added Dekananto, originally the potential targets included Jakarta and Bali.

rorists. In the first Bali bombing, our country was able to uncover the first to third generations of the terrorists.

Other countries can rarely do it. We are able to muzzle three generations,” he said.

Actually the current terrorists, said Hamidin, are not as good as that of the Bali bombers I. It is not the issue, but why young generation are so easily going radical, willing to sacrifice their life just to kill others?

However, he admitted that public awareness of not becoming radical is getting better. “Do not perceive if the ISIS entirely consists of Islam.

There are also atheists joining with them. Tomorrow, terrorist will not only involve the ideology,” said Hamidin.

On that account, prevention of terrorism cannot only be done by the state, but all the elements of society must be involved in it, including the mass media. An academician, Prof. Dr. Rai Setiabudhi, also agreed that Balinese people may not get complacent against terrorist acts although so far, the condition of Bali is conducive from terrorism efforts.

“Do not become complacent and lulled by the safe condition.

Increased vigilance must continue to be done. For example, it can be made through raid of migrants, checking hotels, inns and boarding houses.

Security forces especially police authority must continuously conduct raids and tighten the examinations at the entrance to Bali,” he said.

Customary villages, he continued, can take part and become the avantgarde in maintaining security in each region. There must be no gap for terrorists to enter into the Bali region.

“Let’s work together to increase alertness, especially in the backflow period after the Eid celebration. Do not let any opportunity be exploited by terrorists,” said Prof. Rai Setiabudhi. (rah)

Gilimanuk becomes an ocean of motorized homecomers LCT vessel crashes at LCM Pier

NEGARA - Homecoming traffic out of Bali at Gilimanuk continued on Sunday morning (Jul. 3). The entrance gates of Bali turned into an ocean of homecomers where vehicles occupied the entire road section at this village. Over the weekend, based on the data of the ASDP, there were hundreds of thousands of people leaving Bali with tens of thousands of motor vehicles.

The data at the Gilimanuk checkpoint indicated that from day seven before the Eid or Thursday (Jun. 30) through Sunday there have been 216,387 passengers, 47,165 motorcycles and 22,403 cars ferried.

In the meantime, when calculated from day twelve or Saturday (Jun. 26), there have been totally 64,296 motorcycles and 41,856 cars crossing. Then, the number of passengers, including inside the vehicle, reached 330,000 people or almost equal to the total population of Jembrana (2015).

This number will continue to grow until day one before the Eid. As observation of Bali Post from Sunday morning, the number of motorcycle continued to increase and so were the family cars continuing to connect until Sunday afternoon. In contrast to previous days, thousands

of motorized homecomers thronged Gilimanuk.

The climax occurred on Sunday morning, where the queue of motorcycles reached about two kilometers away from the harbor. Thus, they jostled each other and a lot of motorized homecomers broke through sidewalk.

“Normally the sidewalk is empty and taken advantage to unwind for hitchhiked passengers. Now, it is entirely taken by motorcycles,” lamented one of the residents telling reporters.

A number of sidewalks like the road section along the headman office were occupied by motorcycles.

When entering midday, the situation was increasingly crowded.

Moreover, the queue filled up the lane of road side in front of the Gilimanuk Market usually used for two lines. On the right side was filled up by trucks

and buses, and more than half was filled up by the queue of motorcycles.

Thus, the motorized homecomers were seen like an ocean of people.

A motorized homecomer, Nuranini, stated to have come up at Gilimanuk at 02:00 and was just about to board the ship around 09:00. This woman going home with her toddler admitted to sleep in a doorway. “Now, I am just about to go aboard, but still waiting for my husband standing in a queue in the tent,” she said when having a break in front of pontoon pier of Gilimanuk Harbor.

In the meantime, the entire piers were operated on Sunday morning.

Moreover, the LCM pier commonly used for maximally three vessels to moor was used for four to five vessels on Sunday morning. As a result, both LCT and passenger motor vessels coincided. Crowded LCM pier caused an LCT vessel having been loaded to run aground.

As is observed, the Pancar Indah LCT vessel going to sail could not move because it ran aground about 09:00. Receding seawater made the

vessel’s hull, chiefly the front side, stuck in the pier foundation. As a result, the whole truck freight having boarded onto the vessel should wait until high tide, while truck drivers took passenger vessel. From the information obtained, the vessel had been actually towed by another vessel, but the rope broke.

In the meantime, last Sunday amid the queue all the officers already made maximum efforts. The queue

could not be avoided by the number of vehicles coming almost simultaneously. Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, also came down to regulate the queue in the harbor area along with his team, while outside the harbor the queue of trucks still occurred with inter-provincial city buses. Truck lane was directly separated to LCM pier located at the end of the harbor passing identity card checkpoint and harbor exit post. (kmb26)

’Finding Dory’ Dominates ’Tarzan,’ Spielberg’s ‘The BFG’ Bombs

LOS ANGELES - “Finding Dory” dominated the Independence Day box office, overcoming a trio of new releases to provide the weekend’s biggest fireworks.

The Pixar release swam to the top of the charts for the third consecutive weekend, picking up $41.9 million to bring its domestic total to $372.2 million. The follow-up to “Finding Nemo” should end the four-day holiday with another $50.5 million in receipts. It is on pace to surpass “Toy Story 3” and its $415 million haul as the highest-grossing Pixar film in history on a domestic basis.

“It’s showing no signs of slowing down,” said Dave Hollis, distribution chief at Disney, Pixar’s parent company. “As people are weighing what to see, it stands out

as the only option that’s going to entertain everyone.”

The July 4th weekend is traditionally one of the movie business’ biggest, but this national holiday suffered from a weak crop of new releases, as costly adventures such as “The Legend of Tarzan” and “The BFG” failed to excite audiences. The influx of new releases did lift industry-wide grosses, and the weekend should be among the five biggest.

“There’s a lot of product out there,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “That leads to a lot of fragmentation and cannibalization, and a lot of spreading the wealth.”

With a smaller budget, “The Legend of Tarzan” might rank as a hit. But Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow spent lavishly to update Edgar Rice Burroughs’ jungle king stories, shelling out a reported $180 million to produce the picture and millions more to market it.

Despite the high costs, the film did better than projected, earning $38.1 million for the three-day weekend to take second place. It should make $44 million for the holiday, roughly $10 million more than analysts expected it would generate, but that may not be enough to cover the massive budget. David Yates, who directed several Harry Potter installments, was behind the camera on the film, with Alexander Skarsgard donning Tarzan’s loincloth and Margot Robbie serving as his Jane.

To make a profit, the film will have to resonate with foreign crowds. In its first weekend of international release, “The Legend of Tarzan” pulled in $18.8 million from 19 markets, including South Korea and Russia.

“You have to look at the whole worldwide results,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president, noting that the film has yet to open in major territories such as China.

“At the end of the day we always looked at this as a bigger play internationally,” he added. (rtr)

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday in a July Fourth message to President Barack Obama that he hopes ties between the two countries will get back on track.

Relations between Moscow and Washington hit a post-Cold War low in 2014, when Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and threw its weight behind separatists in eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin, however, has recently sought rapprochement with the United States.
