Tom Cruise was named the highest paid actor in Hollywood on Tuesday, on his 50th birthday -- but the “Mission Impossible” star has little to celebrate.

Days after his wife filed for divorce, apparently taking him by surprise, questions are stacking up about the role of his controversial Scientologist faith at the end of his five-year marriage to Katie Holmes.

The “Top Gun” actor -- who has been in Iceland shooting his latest movie ahead of the landmark birthday, according to reports -- has remained tightlipped since his wife’s bombshell announcement last week.

“Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,” his spokesman said Friday, adding nothing since despite mounting speculation about

what led to Holmes’s decision.

Their fairytale love affair had started so well. Cruise famously jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch professing his love for Holmes during a whirlwind courtship that culminated in a proposal under the Eiffel Tower.

But the divorce will be the third for Cruise, following his marriage to US actress Mimi Rogers from 1987-1990 and Australian Nicole Kidman from 1990-2001. He also had a three-year relationship with Spanish star Penelope Cruz.

Critics might suggest that, for all his blockbuster achievements on the big

screen over the three decades, Cruise has been less successful in his personal life.

And he now faces a court battle royale for custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter Suri, after reports that Holmes is seeking sole custody because she fears Cruise wants to draw the child deeper into Scientology.

A lawyer for the Church of Scientology -- of which Cruise is a prominent member -- denied Monday sending anyone to follow Holmes, or that Cruise wanted Suri to join the Sea Organization, described as a boot camp for the religion.

“There is no truth whatsoever to the TMZ.com report (or any other report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Holmes,” lawyer Gary Soter told AFP in an emailed letter.

US television icon Andy Griffith dies, 86 Actor Andy Griffith, 86, a beloved icon of US television for programs including “The Andy Griffith Show” in the 1960s and the popular legal drama “Matlock,” died Tuesday, US media reported.

Griffith, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then president George W. Bush in 2005, died at his North Carolina home, according to media reports.

He became a household name for his eponymous series. He also played the sheriff in “Mayberry RFD,” set in the same fictional town as “The Andy Griffith Show,” said to be modeled on his hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina.

child, and joined a university drama club before becoming a teacher after graduating, according to industry daily Variety. He got his big break in the 1950s when Ed Sullivan began featuring him on his national television show.

His most notable big screen role was in Elia Kazan’s “A Face in the Crowd” (1957), playing a country boy who rises to TV stardom in a performance described as “stunning” by industry database IMDb. After a stint on Broadway he launched “The Andy Griffith Show,” along with a young Ron Howard, who was later Richie Cunningham in “Happy Days” before a successful film career.

JAKARTA - An Indonesian court on Wednesday threw out an anti-drug group’s legal challenge against a presidential decision to slash the jail term of Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby.

The state administrative court in Jakarta rejected the challenge from the National Movement Against Narcotics (GRANAT) against the Indonesian president’s five-year reduction of Corby’s 20-year jail term.

“The state administrative court has no right to proceed with the legal challenge

by GRANAT. Clemency is a presidential prerogative protected by the Indonesian constitution,” Judge Yodi Martono Wahyunadi said.

The court last month examined documents submitted by the group arguing that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s act of clemency in May was unjustified and drug traffickers posed a “dangerous threat” to the younger generation.

The group’s lawyer Henry Yosodiningrat said they would appeal the decision.

“Indonesia is in grief today following the court’s decision.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — In the 1982 sci-fi movie “Blade Runner,” there are hints that the hero, played by Harrison Ford, is an artificial human — an “android” or “replicant.” His job is to go out and kill other, rogue androids.

If he’s an android, he’s of the latest model, Nexus 7. That’s also the name Google Inc. has picked for the first tablet to bear the Google brand.

Clearly, its mission is to go out and kill rogue tablets running Google’s Android software.

Specifically, the Nexus 7 seems to have been designed to give anyone who bought a Kindle Fire from Amazon.com Inc. or a Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble Inc. a lethal case of buyer’s remorse.

The Nexus 7 costs $199, the same that Amazon and Barnes & Noble charge for their tablets. But it’s better than theirs in significant ways, as it became clear to me after a couple of days of use.

Google announced the tablet last week and is taking pre-orders for delivery in mid-July.

DENPASAR - Aside from the matter of fake products, the other issues faced by the Drug and Food Control Agency (BBPOM) so far are the ubiquitous circulation of illegal products such as drugs, food and beverage as well as cosmetics.

It was certainly a diverse collection of creations from A-lines to dropped waists, palettes that were muted or bright, and styles spanning decades.

But Tuesday’s shows had one key thing in common: imagination.

“Haute couture will exist as long as people want to dream,” Didier Grumbach told The Associated Press.

The French fashion president, one of the most discreet yet powerful figures in the world of fashion thus answers detractors who predict the demise of the age-old tradition.

Grumbach believes that couture — an artisanal clothes-making method that exists only in Paris— has many healthy years ahead.

Haute couture exists against all the odds: creations which range in price from $19,000 to $125,000 being bought by women thought to number no more than 100 in the world.

“But Armani’s coming here to Paris, it shows that fashion needs haute couture. ... It’s not just about selling clothes: it’s an advert, an ideas factory,” added Grumbach.

Strong showings both from Armani Prive and Chanel prove that couture — 150 years since its birth — still has a lot to say.

Why is Google targeting the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet? Because they’ve been relatively successful competitors to Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet, yet Google is getting no benefit from their success.

Google makes its Android operating software available for any device manufacturer to use. Amazon and Barnes & Noble took Android and modified it heavily. Namely, they took out the applications that point to Google’s services and the advertising it sells. Instead, the apps point to the companies’ own stores.

In other words, these tablets are rogue Androids.

Other tablets, such as Samsung’s Galaxy, use the “proper,” Googlish version of Android, but they’ve been more expensive than the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. Apparently, Google thought it was time to make a really good, proper Android tablet for $199.

The Nexus 7 is a plain black slab with a screen that’s 7 inches on the diagonal — the same size as the Nook and the Fire. The most noticeable feature it has over the competition is a

low-resolution camera, facing the user.

That means the Nexus 7 can be used for videoconferencing, but it’s nearly impossible to use for snapshots. It also has a microphone, which the Fire lacks, making Amazon’s device useless even for audio conferencing.

The screen has a higher resolution than the Fire, and colors look more vivid. The whole tablet is slightly thinner and appreciably lighter than the Fire.

Other nifty but invisible hardware upgrades on the Nexus 7 include Bluetooth and GPS chips for use with headsets and navigation software. The tablet even has a chip for near-field communications, which means it can “talk” to some phones and store payment terminals when tapped against them. I used the Nexus 7 to pay for toilet paper in a drugstore.

But the most important difference between the Nexus 7 and its prey is the software. Not only is it running stock Android, but it’s also the first device to run the latest version of Android. Google, with its trademark combination of cute and cutthroat, calls it “Jelly Bean.”

In Bali, the circulation of illegal or fake drug, food and beverage as well as cosmetic products remained fairly widespread. To anticipate the ubiquitous circulation of those illegal products, in the near future the BBPOM Bali will establish a Task Force for Illegal Drugs and Food Eradication.

It was expressed by the Head of BBPOM Bali, Corry Pandjaitan, accompanied by the Head of Inspection and Investigation, I Gusti Ayu Adhi Aryapatni in Denpasar.

According to Corry, the Task Force was announced by Vice President at the beginning of 2011.

She added the Task Force would consist of a joint team from various agencies. “It will comprise the element of police, prosecutor, government, health agency, customs and other relevant agencies,” she said.

Eradication of illegal drug, food and beverage as well as cosmetics aimed at guaranteeing the public health because the quality of those illegal products could not be accounted. In addition, establishment of the Task Force also posed a measure to ensure the sustainability of the domestic

industry. The main target of the Task Force was importers bringing in food supplies from overseas and the distributors. To enforce the law against those illegal products, her party would involve all the elements related to the law.

“We always keep an eye on the products in circulation the field and get around throughout the regions in Bali. Even, the dominant products in the market are alleged to come from China,” he said.

“We call for the formation of an international investigation committee modelled on the international investigation committee set up to look into the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri,” senior Palestinian official Saeb Erakat said.

The call came a day after the AlJazeera news channel broadcast the results of an investigation into the death of Arafat, who died in 2004, which showed that the Palestinian leader might have been poisoned with polonium.

The news channel said an analysis of Arafat’s belongings, which were given to his wife by the Paris hospital where he died, showed high levels of the radioactive substance.

Polonium was used to kill Russian former spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 after drinking tea laced with the substance at a London hotel.

Francois Bochud, head of the Institute of Radiation Physics at the University of Lausanne, was

among the scientists who worked with Al-Jazeera to analyse Arafat’s death and test his possessions.

“The conclusion was that we did find some significant polonium that was present in these samples,” he told Al-Jazeera.

Arafat, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who led the struggle for Palestinian statehood for nearly four decades, died on November 11, 2004, following several weeks of treatment.

He had been airlifted to France from his besieged headquarters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

French officials, citing privacy laws, refused to reveal the precise cause of death or the nature of his condition, fuelling a host of rumours and theories as to the cause of his illness.

At the time of his death at the age of 75, Palestinian officials charged he had been poisoned by long-time foe Israel, but an inconclusive Palestinian investigation in 2005 ruled out cancer, AIDS or poisoning.

Australia trying to help migrant boat in distress

SYDNEY — Australian rescuers were trying to help a migrant-filled boat in bad weather and rough seas off Indonesia on Wednesday, a day after the countries agreed to strengthen maritime ties to combat people smuggling.

The wooden boat issued a distress call Wednesday morning and was believed to have up to 180 people on board, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Its initial location was 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Panaitan, a small island off the western end of the main Java island, but by afternoon, it had drifted within 180 miles (290 kilometers) of Christmas Island, Indonesian officials said.

The territory is nearer to Indonesia than to the Australian mainland and is a popular destination for asylum seekers. Australia holds migrants in a detention center there while their asylum claims are heard.

Poor weather was preventing rescuers on the Australian naval ship HMAS Wollongong from boarding the migrants’ boat, the maritime authority said. An Indonesian plane and navy ship were returning home from the scene as the boat moved closer to Christmas Island, said Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for its National Search and Rescue Agency.

The boat was intact and though the initial report was that it was taking on water, the precise problem was unclear, Australian officials said. Prakoso said all the passengers were still on board. “(Rescuers) found that there were no visible signs of distress, but I do need to emphasize this — the weather conditions out there at the moment are very rough,” Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare told reporters.

Gillard said Australia would work with Indonesia’s maritime search and rescue agency to help strengthen its communication abilities with vessels during sea disasters and would look into an exchange program of search and rescue specialists.

Australia is a common destination for boats carrying asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka and other poor or warravaged countries. Many travel first to Indonesia before aiming for Australian territory in rickety, crowded fishing boats.

DETROIT - The Big Three US automakers reported strong domestic sales for June Tuesday, capping a solid first half of the year despite the still-weak economy.

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all reported a steady rise of US sales year-on-year despite the economy’s secondquarter soft spot, with GM’s and Chrysler’s increases in double digits.

GM reported June US sales of 248,750 vehicles, up 16 percent from a year ago and the company’s highest monthly sales since September 2008. Divisions Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac all reported double-digit increases.

GM, the largest US automaker, scored a 32 percent increase in Chevrolet Malibu sales and a 21 percent increase in Buick

LaCrosse sales.

“Across the board, June was a strong month for GM,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president for US sales operations.

“The combination of new products, available credit, lower fuel prices and modest economic growth was a stronger influence on consumer behavior than economic and political uncertainty.”

Chrysler sales improved by 20 percent as the automaker posted its best June figures in five years, 144,811 units, and its second quarter was 24 percent higher than the same period in 2011.

German economy set to recover, but risks remain

FRANKFURT - The conditions are in place for the German economy, Europe’s biggest, to recover this year -- and lead the eurozone back to growth -- unless the crisis intensifies further, the IMF warned on Tuesday.

“Several conditions are in place in Germany for a domestic demand-led recovery following the downturn at end-2011,” the International Monetary Fund wrote in a new report on Germany.

Germany’s economic performance throughout the crisis so far “has been remarkable, despite a difficult environment,” the head of the IMF mission to Germany, Subir Lall, told a telephone conference call. Germany expanded strongly for most of last year, but growth shuddered to a halt in the final quarter, when it contracted by 0.2 percent.

Nevertheless, the dip was only short-lived and gross domestic product (GDP) rebounded again to expand by 0.5 percent in the first three months of this year.

While the IMF was pencilling in much slower GDP rowth of around 0.1 percent in the second quarter, the economy would gather momentum and reach its potential for growth of around 1.25 percent in the second half of the year, Lall said.

Healthy corporate and household balance sheets, higher wages, well anchored inflation expectations, and low borrowing costs would act as a boost by keeping domestic demand strong, the IMF said.

Taking 2012 as a whole, the fund said it was projecting GDP to expand by 1.0 percent, down from 3.1 percent in 2011. Growth would then pick up to 1.4 precent in 2013, it predicted. The near-term outlook was, however, “clouded by a number of downside risks,” the IMF cautioned.

The biggest of these would be a possible further intensification of the eurozone’s sovereign debt crisis, “which would spill over into Germany directly through real and financial channels, and indirectly through dampened business and consumer sentiment,” it said.

Boeing raises forecast for airliner demand by $500 billion Agence France-Presse

PARIS - The US aircraft maker Boeing raised its 20-year forecast for global demand for airliners by $500 billion (396 billion euros) on Tuesday. Boeing said it now saw the global market doubling to 34,000 airliners worth $4,500 billion, from 33,500 aircraft worth $4,000 billion which it had forecast last year.

“The world’s aviation market is broader, deeper and more diverse than we’ve ever seen it,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“It has proven to be resilient even during some very challenging years and is driving production rate increases across the board,” he added in a statement.

Boeing based its forecast on an assumption that airline traffic would grow by five percent each year for the next two decades. Its main rival, the European manufacturer Airbus, also

expects traffic to increase at about this rate. The biggest increase in deliveries will be to the Asia-Pacific region.

Boeing expects that about one third of all airliners built, or about 12,030 planes, will be delivered there.

“As the market continues to grow, especially in emerging economies, air travel will become affordable to even more people,” Tinseth explained.

The company highlighted demand for single-aisle aircraft such as its 737 model, which is being transformed into two new versions and which Boeing expected to continue posting “robust growth” in sales.

At an estimated 23,240 aircraft over the period in question, that segment represented almost three times more than twin isle jets, at 7,950, though the forecast market value of twin aisle jets was slightly greater, at 2.08 trillion dollars.

Large jets like the double-decker Airbus A380, for which Boeing makes no equivalent model, were

estimated by the US manufacturer at a much more modest 790 aircraft worth 280 billion dollars.

Meanwhile, Boeing lowered its forecast for deliveries of cargo planes owing to a slowing of the market for air freight. Even so, it said that the market for cargo aircraft would almost double from 1,740 planes in 2012 to 3,200 in 2031.

Boeing also reacted to news that Airbus planned to build its rival to the 737, the Airbus A320 series, in the United States to ward off the negative effects of the euro’s value against the dollar. Tinseth said that “it’s not about the address on your business card” but the quality of the aircraft a company offers that would decide whether US clients bought more of their jets from one company or another.

“The first lever is the product, the capability, the quality and the price of the product, If you have the right product, you’ll be successful,” he told a telephone news conference.

DENPASAR - The number of foreign visitors to Bali rose 5.57 percent on-year to 220,700 in May 2012, the Central Statistic Agency (BPS) of Bali said.

The number, however, was 2.12 percent smaller than in the previous month,BPS head Gede Suarsa said here on Tuesday.

The visitors came mainly from Australia, followed by China, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea, Gede Suarsa said, adding Australian tourists made up 27.8 percent of the total.

The visitors in May brought the total number of foreign tourists to Bali to 1.16 million in the first five months of this year, up from 1.06 million in the same period in 2011.

The growing number of tourists contributed to an increase in the occupancy rates of hotels in Bali.

“Although the economy of Bali experienced a slowdown in the first quarter, the potential of growth in the future is still very good. It is re-

According to him, the total amount of bank lending in Bali in the first quarter of 2012 reached IDR 31.85 trillion. That number continued to increase to IDR 32.52 trillion in April 2012. Meanwhile, the loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) of banking in Bali also indicated an increasing trend. For comparison, in the first quarter of 2011 the LDR was noted to attain 65.79 percent.

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of thousands from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic were preparing to spend the Fourth of July like America’s founders did in 1776, without the conveniences of electricity and air conditioning.

Power outages from Friday’s storm altered planned celebrations in a host of ways and left powerless residents grumbling that America’s birthday would hardly be a party. Cookouts were cancelled or moved to homes with power. Vacation plans were altered. Some residents without power said they weren’t in a holiday mood.

And even some whose power had been restored said they had run out of steam to celebrate in the way they had planned.

Friday’s storm arrived with little warning and knocked out power to 3 million homes and businesses in states from West Virginia to Ohio and Illinois. Officials blamed 24 deaths on the storm and its aftermath, and power companies in some places estimated it could be the weekend before everyone’s power is restored.

As of late Tuesday, more than 1 million homes and businesses remained without power.

As a result, power repairs were taking priority over parties in many parts. At least four planned fireworks displays were cancelled in Maryland because of the outages, with officials saying they couldn’t spare police and fire resources for the festivities.

In Rockville, Md., officials called

off their celebration because trees and wires were blocking two of the three entrances to the college campus where fireworks were planned. In Gaithersburg, Md., Acting City Manager Tony Tomasello said his city, about 30 minutes north of Washington, cancelled its display because a power company is using its planned celebration location, a fairgrounds, as a staging area for repairs. Hundreds of bucket trucks park there when crews finish their 16-hour shifts, and transformers, gravel and poles are being stored there too.

“Everyone’s disappointed. We’re disappointed,” Tomasello said of cancelling the celebration, adding that it would be rescheduled.

In West Virginia, meanwhile, officials urged people to resist the temptation to set off fireworks at home because the risk of fire is too high.

Many brown, crunchy lawns were already potential fuel, but the trees and limbs that fell during the storm have added even more tinder.

fell on his property, Andrews, who runs a construction equipment rental company, said he was ready to relax by the pool instead.

Other parties were toned down, cancelled or moved. LaJuan Barnett, 44, who runs a daycare in Waldorf, Md., planned a more modest celebration with hot dogs and hamburgers after throwing out at least $350 in spoiled food and spending another $200 on groceries Tuesday.

“We’re on a budget,” said Barnett, who got her power back on Monday night, after nearly 72 hours.

Power outages and spoiled food also changed the plans of Sharvey Smith, 39, of Baltimore. Smith had begun preparing for an Independence Day party before the storm hit, buying chicken and spare ribs and planning a small gathering on her back porch.

But that food spoiled when her power went out, so her party is off.

She planned to spend Wednesday’s holiday at her parents’ house 10 minutes away, which has electricity, and where she and her family have been staying. But her patience is wearing thin.

So far, the estimated time it will be back on is no earlier than Thursday.

A car bombing at a market in central Iraq killed eight people on Wednesday and three others were murdered in Baghdad, the latest in a spike in nationwide unrest ahead of Shiite rituals.

The violence came a day after a series of attacks across Iraq killed 38 amid preparations for ceremonies on Friday to commemorate the birth of a key figure in Shiite Islam.

In Wednesday’s deadliest attack, a car bombing in the town of Zubaidiyah at 9:15 am (0615 GMT) killed eight people and wounded 37 others, a security official and a medic at a hospital in nearby Aziziyah said on condition of anonymity.

The medical official said a child was among the dead, and women and children were among the wounded.

About a dozen shops were badly damaged by the bombing, an AFP correspondent at the scene said, adding that security officials imposed a vehicle curfew on the town in the aftermath of the attack.

“It was a huge explosion this morning,” said Hussein al-Zubaidi, who owns a grocery store in the market where the bombing took place.

“It was strange for us -- it is the first time this has happened in our town. We have only one ambulance, so people worked together to evacuate the victims.”

In Baghdad, a series of assassinations by gunmen using silenced pistols left three people dead -- two police officers and a parliament official.

In one shooting, policewoman Ibtisam Ibrahim was killed by gunshots to the head in the east of the capital, an interior ministry official and a medic at Al-Kindi hospital said.

In west Baghdad, off-duty police first lieutenant Ahmed Swadi, who was wearing civilian clothes, was killed, the interior ministry official and a doctor at Yarmuk hospital said.

Indonesia in March announced a new law limiting foreign ownership in the mining sector from 80 percent to less than 50 percent, in a bid to protect abundant natural resources and keep a larger portion of revenues.

The regulation, which applies to new contracts only, obliges foreigners to divest at least 51 percent of their shares to Indonesians over a 10-year period.

It is not clear how the law may affect Freeport’s Indonesian operation.

Freeport Indonesia considers IPO

JAKARTA - The Indonesian subsidiary of US mining giant Freeport-McMoRan is considering launching an initial public offering (IPO), its head said in comments published Wednesday.

“We are considering several options, including an IPO,” Freeport Indonesia president Rozik Soetjipto was quoted as telling the Jakarta Globe newspaper.

“The IPO would be good for Freeport Indonesia,” he said, adding that it would make the company “more accountable and transparent.” He did not specify details such as the timeframe or size of the sale.

US-based Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold, which owns a 90.64 percent stake in the Indonesian subsidiary, would still have the final say on the matter, he added.

Soetjipto said Freeport, whose huge Grasberg mine in restive Papua province was hit by a violent strike last year, was focused on renegotiating its contracts ending in 2021 with the government, the report said.

Freeport Indonesia was not immediately available for comment about the report.

RI sees investment opportunities in Iraq Antara

“Following the US invasion, Iraq`s infrastructure has been totally damaged, so there are big opportunities [to invest] in various fields,” said Safzen, who is also a retired Lieutenant General, during a presentation on Indonesia-Iraq investment opportunities here on Tuesday.

“Iraq is familiar with the good quality products exported by Indonesia, and the Iraqi people currently need tires, soaps, spices, and other daily-use products,” he added.

A number of Iraqi officials recently said Baghdad would give priority to Muslimmajority nations for cooperation in investment and trade.

“Indonesia could invest in the oil and gas sector and also in the development of schools, hospitals, bridges, roads, sports stadiums and markets,” Safzen noted.

“They also want to develop concrete plants, tire plants, pharmaceutical companies, electronics companies and palm oil plantations,” he said.

“Having sufficient experience in the agri-

culture and fisheries sectors, Indonesia could even help in the development of these sectors in Iraq, because the Iraqi government has allocated special funds for that purpose,” the ambassador explained.

Safzen said the security condition in Iraq was improving and the Indonesian embassy in Iraq would also help ensure the safety and security of Indonesian businessmen.

Indonesia`s bilateral trade value with Iraq increased to US$154 million in 2011, from US$52 million in 2010.

Iraq produces 3 million barrels of oil per day and plans to increase the productivity to 10 million barrels per day by 2017.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussain Ibrahim Saleh Al-Shahristani, who visited Jakarta recently, said Iraq wanted to supply oil to developing countries, including Indonesia.

“I am convinced that Iraq could become a safety valve to prevent volatility in the price of oil and meet the increasing demand of crude oil from developing countries, including Indonesia,” he said during a lecture on “Iraq`s Contribution to the World Facing the Global Challenges and Crisis’ at Pertamina Building.

Al-Shahristani also invited Indonesian oil company Pertamina to participate in the management of the huge oil fields in Iraq.

Deron Williams takes Nets’ $98 million deal

NEW YORK — Deron Williams is moving to Brooklyn with the Nets, instead of back home to Dallas. The All-Star point guard said on his Twitter page Tuesday night that he “made a very tough decision today” and posted a picture of the Nets’ new team logo that accompanies their move from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

A person with knowledge of the decision said Williams told the team he was accepting their five-year contract worth $98 million. The person confirmed the agreement on condition of anonymity because contracts can’t be signed until July 11. Williams, the top free agent available, chose to stay with the Nets over signing with the Mavericks, who hoped they could convince him to come back to the area where he grew up.

It’s a huge triumph for the Nets as they prepare to move into the new Barclays Center to start the 2012-13 season. They gave up an enormous package to get Williams in a surprising February 2011 trade, sending promising forward Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris, two first-round draft picks and cash to the Utah Jazz.

But it was worth it for the Nets, who needed a franchise player with them to build buzz for their move to New York. Williams wanted to make a quick decision before he reports to training camp in Las Vegas with the U.S. men’s basketball team on Thursday. He met with both teams Monday,

the day after free agency opened, and made his Twitter posting at about 7 p.m. ET. Williams’ decision comes a day after the Nets agreed to a deal with Atlanta for All-Star guard Joe Johnson, and amid reports they are still hoping to make a deal with Orlando for Dwight Howard.

Brooklyn also has a deal in place to re-sign versatile free agent forward Gerald Wallace.

Just two years after a 70-loss season, the Nets will have one of the NBA’s best backcourts and are poised to make a quick move up the Eastern Conference standings.

Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks had spoken openly about their desire to bring Williams back to North Texas, where he starred at The Colony High School. Mark Cuban’s team never made much attempt to defend its 2011 NBA title, letting key players such as Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea leave through free agency so the Mavs could save money for this summer.

But Dallas could only offer Williams a fouryear deal worth about $75 million under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement. And with the Nets’ flurry of moves, may not even be able to offer a better team anymore.

Williams averaged 21 points and 8.7 assists last season and had a 57-point game. One of the league’s top point guards since entering the NBA as the No. 3 pick of the Jazz in 2005, he was ahead of his competitors when last season started after playing in Turkey during the lockout.

LONDON - Andre Villas-Boas was given a chance to make amends for his first failed effort in English football management after being named coach of Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

The job represents a golden opportunity for Villas-Boas. A year ago he took over at London rivals Chelsea on a three-year deal but he struggled at Stamford Bridge and left under a cloud nine months later amid media reports of dressing-room unrest.

“Tottenham Hotspur are a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world. I feel privileged to become coach,” the 34-year-old told the Spurs website (www.tottenhamhotspur.com).

“This is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League. I have had several discussions with the chairman (Daniel Levy) and the board and I share their vision for the future progress of the club.

would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead,” the Portuguese added after replacing Harry Redknapp who was sacked last month after four years at the helm. Redknapp’s dismissal has cleared the way for Villas-Boas to return to the spotlight and while his appointment will be met with scepticism elsewhere in London, his past triumphs cannot be overlooked. “He has an outstanding reputation for his technical knowledge of the game and for creating well-organised teams capable of playing football in an attractive and attacking style,” said Levy.

“Andre shares our long-term ambitions and ethos of developing players and nurturing young talent.” Redknapp was an oldschool man-manager type and Levy now seems to want to create

MADRID - Euro 2012 winners Juan Mata, Jordi Alba and Javi Martinez were included in Spain’s preliminary soccer squad on Tuesday for the London Olympics later this month. Chelsea midfielder Mata and full back Alba, who is set to leave Valencia for Barcelona this week, scored in Sunday’s 4-0 final victory over Italy in Kiev.

The world champions became the first side to retain the European title, stringing together three major tournament triumphs in a row. Luis Milla’s 22-man Olympic squad was named the day after Mata, Alba and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Martinez were involved in a huge homecoming celebration as the team paraded the trophy through the streets of Madrid.

“I believe it would be unfair to demand that this team be at the same level as the full national team,” Milla told a news

conference. “This team has character and a similar playing philosophy but it is a different team under different pressures.” The Olympic team will join up on Friday and will face Senegal and Mexico in friendlies before heading to London.

The squad, which will be trimmed down to 18, also includes Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu and Barcelona trio Martin Montoya, Thiago Alcantara and Cristian Tello.

LONDON - Andre Villas-Boas was given a chance to make amends for his first failed effort in English football management after being named coach of Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

The job represents a golden opportunity for Villas-Boas. A year ago he took over at London rivals Chelsea on a three-year deal but he struggled at Stamford Bridge and left under a cloud nine months later amid media reports of dressing-room unrest.

“Tottenham Hotspur are a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world. I feel privileged to become coach,” the 34-year-old told the Spurs website (www.tottenhamhotspur.com).

“This is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League. I have had several discussions with the chairman (Daniel Levy) and the board and I share their vision for the future progress of the club.

LONDON - Scenting a fifth Wimbledon singles title, grasscourt predator Serena Williams mowed down defending champion Petra Kvitova to move ominously into the semi-finals for the eighth time on Tuesday as the championships again battled the elements.

The 30-year-old American, who still looks unstoppable when in full flow on the lawns, wheeled out the heavy artillery to crack down 13 aces in a 6-3 7-5 victory that significantly raised the bar in a disappointing women’s tournament. Deron Williams takes Nets’ $98 million deal

NEW YORK — Deron Williams is moving to Brooklyn with the Nets, instead of back home to Dallas. The All-Star point guard said on his Twitter page Tuesday night that he “made a very tough decision today” and posted a picture of the Nets’ new team logo that accompanies their move from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

A person with knowledge of the decision said Williams told the team he was accepting their five-year contract worth $98 million. The person confirmed the agreement on condition of anonymity because contracts can’t be signed until July 11. Williams, the top free agent available, chose to stay with the Nets over signing with the Mavericks, who hoped they could convince him to come back to the area where he grew up.

It’s a huge triumph for the Nets as they prepare to move into the new Barclays Center to start the 2012-13 season. They gave up an enormous package to get Williams in a surprising February 2011 trade, sending promising forward Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris, two first-round draft picks and cash to the Utah Jazz.

But it was worth it for the Nets, who needed a franchise player with them to build buzz for their move to New York. Williams wanted to make a quick decision before he reports to training camp in Las Vegas with the U.S. men’s basketball team on Thursday. He met with both teams Monday,

the day after free agency opened, and made his Twitter posting at about 7 p.m. ET. Williams’ decision comes a day after the Nets agreed to a deal with Atlanta for All-Star guard Joe Johnson, and amid reports they are still hoping to make a deal with Orlando for Dwight Howard.

Brooklyn also has a deal in place to re-sign versatile free agent forward Gerald Wallace.

Just two years after a 70-loss season, the Nets will have one of the NBA’s best backcourts and are poised to make a quick move up the Eastern Conference standings.

Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks had spoken openly about their desire to bring Williams back to North Texas, where he starred at The Colony High School. Mark Cuban’s team never made much attempt to defend its 2011 NBA title, letting key players such as Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea leave through free agency so the Mavs could save money for this summer.

But Dallas could only offer Williams a fouryear deal worth about $75 million under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement. And with the Nets’ flurry of moves, may not even be able to offer a better team anymore.

Williams averaged 21 points and 8.7 assists last season and had a 57-point game. One of the league’s top point guards since entering the NBA as the No. 3 pick of the Jazz in 2005, he was ahead of his competitors when last season started after playing in Turkey during the lockout.

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of thousands from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic were preparing to spend the Fourth of July like America’s founders did in 1776, without the conveniences of electricity and air conditioning.

Power outages from Friday’s storm altered planned celebrations in a host of ways and left powerless residents grumbling that America’s birthday would hardly be a party. Cookouts were cancelled or moved to homes with power. Vacation plans were altered. Some residents without power said they weren’t in a holiday mood.

And even some whose power had been restored said they had run out of steam to celebrate in the way they had planned.

Friday’s storm arrived with little warning and knocked out power to 3 million homes and businesses in states from West Virginia to Ohio and Illinois. Officials blamed 24 deaths on the storm and its aftermath, and power companies in some places estimated it could be the weekend before everyone’s power is restored.

As of late Tuesday, more than 1 million homes and businesses remained without power.

As a result, power repairs were taking priority over parties in many parts. At least four planned fireworks displays were cancelled in Maryland because of the outages, with officials saying they couldn’t spare police and fire resources for the festivities.

In Rockville, Md., officials called

off their celebration because trees and wires were blocking two of the three entrances to the college campus where fireworks were planned. In Gaithersburg, Md., Acting City Manager Tony Tomasello said his city, about 30 minutes north of Washington, cancelled its display because a power company is using its planned celebration location, a fairgrounds, as a staging area for repairs. Hundreds of bucket trucks park there when crews finish their 16-hour shifts, and transformers, gravel and poles are being stored there too.

“Everyone’s disappointed. We’re disappointed,” Tomasello said of cancelling the celebration, adding that it would be rescheduled.

In West Virginia, meanwhile, officials urged people to resist the temptation to set off fireworks at home because the risk of fire is too high.

Many brown, crunchy lawns were already potential fuel, but the trees and limbs that fell during the storm have added even more tinder.

Some people affected by the storm were too tired or frustrated to think about fireworks, parties or planned holiday travel. Dennis Andrews, 62, of Ellicott City, Md., had planned to go to Myrtle Beach, S.C. But after spending 14 hours cutting trees that

fell on his property, Andrews, who runs a construction equipment rental company, said he was ready to relax by the pool instead.

Other parties were toned down, cancelled or moved. LaJuan Barnett, 44, who runs a daycare in Waldorf, Md., planned a more modest celebration with hot dogs and hamburgers after throwing out at least $350 in spoiled food and spending another $200 on groceries Tuesday.

“We’re on a budget,” said Barnett, who got her power back on Monday night, after nearly 72 hours.

Power outages and spoiled food also changed the plans of Sharvey Smith, 39, of Baltimore. Smith had begun preparing for an Independence Day party before the storm hit, buying chicken and spare ribs and planning a small gathering on her back porch.

But that food spoiled when her power went out, so her party is off.

She planned to spend Wednesday’s holiday at her parents’ house 10 minutes away, which has electricity, and where she and her family have been staying. But her patience is wearing thin.

So far, the estimated time it will be back on is no earlier than Thursday.

A car bombing at a market in central Iraq killed eight people on Wednesday and three others were murdered in Baghdad, the latest in a spike in nationwide unrest ahead of Shiite rituals.

The violence came a day after a series of attacks across Iraq killed 38 amid preparations for ceremonies on Friday to commemorate the birth of a key figure in Shiite Islam.

In Wednesday’s deadliest attack, a car bombing in the town of Zubaidiyah at 9:15 am (0615 GMT) killed eight people and wounded 37 others, a security official and a medic at a hospital in nearby Aziziyah said on condition of anonymity.

The medical official said a child was among the dead, and women and children were among the wounded.

About a dozen shops were badly damaged by the bombing, an AFP correspondent at the scene said, adding that security officials imposed a vehicle curfew on the town in the aftermath of the attack.

“It was a huge explosion this morning,” said Hussein al-Zubaidi, who owns a grocery store in the market where the bombing took place.

“It was strange for us -- it is the first time this has happened in our town. We have only one ambulance, so people worked together to evacuate the victims.”

In Baghdad, a series of assassinations by gunmen using silenced pistols left three people dead -- two police officers and a parliament official.

In one shooting, policewoman Ibtisam Ibrahim was killed by gunshots to the head in the east of the capital, an interior ministry official and a medic at Al-Kindi hospital said.

In west Baghdad, off-duty police first lieutenant Ahmed Swadi, who was wearing civilian clothes, was killed, the interior ministry official and a doctor at Yarmuk hospital said.

Indonesia in March announced a new law limiting foreign ownership in the mining sector from 80 percent to less than 50 percent, in a bid to protect abundant natural resources and keep a larger portion of revenues.

The regulation, which applies to new contracts only, obliges foreigners to divest at least 51 percent of their shares to Indonesians over a 10-year period.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian subsidiary of US mining giant Freeport-McMoRan is considering launching an initial public offering (IPO), its head said in comments published Wednesday.

RI sees investment opportunities in Iraq Antara

JAKARTA - Indonesia has opportunities to invest in the reconstruction of Iraq, according to Indonesian Ambassador to Iraq Safzen Noerdin.

“Following the US invasion, Iraq`s infrastructure has been totally damaged, so there are big opportunities [to invest] in various fields,” said Safzen, who is also a retired Lieutenant General, during a presentation on Indonesia-Iraq investment opportunities here on Tuesday.

“Iraq is familiar with the good quality products exported by Indonesia, and the Iraqi people currently need tires, soaps, spices, and other daily-use products,” he added.

A number of Iraqi officials recently said Baghdad would give priority to Muslimmajority nations for cooperation in investment and trade.

“Indonesia could invest in the oil and gas sector and also in the development of schools, hospitals, bridges, roads, sports stadiums and markets,” Safzen noted.

“They also want to develop concrete plants, tire plants, pharmaceutical companies, electronics companies and palm oil plantations,” he said.

“Having sufficient experience in the agri-

culture and fisheries sectors, Indonesia could even help in the development of these sectors in Iraq, because the Iraqi government has allocated special funds for that purpose,” the ambassador explained.

Safzen said the security condition in Iraq was improving and the Indonesian embassy in Iraq would also help ensure the safety and security of Indonesian businessmen.

Indonesia`s bilateral trade value with Iraq increased to US$154 million in 2011, from US$52 million in 2010.

Iraq produces 3 million barrels of oil per day and plans to increase the productivity to 10 million barrels per day by 2017.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussain Ibrahim Saleh Al-Shahristani, who visited Jakarta recently, said Iraq wanted to supply oil to developing countries, including Indonesia.

“I am convinced that Iraq could become a safety valve to prevent volatility in the price of oil and meet the increasing demand of crude oil from developing countries, including Indonesia,” he said during a lecture on “Iraq`s Contribution to the World Facing the Global Challenges and Crisis’ at Pertamina Building.

Al-Shahristani also invited Indonesian oil company Pertamina to participate in the management of the huge oil fields in Iraq.

DETROIT - The Big Three US automakers reported strong domestic sales for June Tuesday, capping a solid first half of the year despite the still-weak economy.

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all reported a steady rise of US sales year-on-year despite the economy’s secondquarter soft spot, with GM’s and Chrysler’s increases in double digits.

GM reported June US sales of 248,750 vehicles, up 16 percent from a year ago and the company’s highest monthly sales since September 2008. Divisions Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac all reported double-digit increases.

“Across the board, June was a strong month for GM,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president for US sales operations.

Chrysler sales improved by 20 percent as the automaker posted its best June figures in five years, 144,811 units, and its second quarter was 24 percent higher than the same period in 2011.

German economy set to recover, but risks remain

FRANKFURT - The conditions are in place for the German economy, Europe’s biggest, to recover this year -- and lead the eurozone back to growth -- unless the crisis intensifies further, the IMF warned on Tuesday.

“Several conditions are in place in Germany for a domestic demand-led recovery following the downturn at end-2011,” the International Monetary Fund wrote in a new report on Germany.

Germany’s economic performance throughout the crisis so far “has been remarkable, despite a difficult environment,” the head of the IMF mission to Germany, Subir Lall, told a telephone conference call. Germany expanded strongly for most of last year, but growth shuddered to a halt in the final quarter, when it contracted by 0.2 percent.

Nevertheless, the dip was only short-lived and gross domestic product (GDP) rebounded again to expand by 0.5 percent in the first three months of this year.

While the IMF was pencilling in much slower GDP rowth of around 0.1 percent in the second quarter, the economy would gather momentum and reach its potential for growth of around 1.25 percent in the second half of the year, Lall said.

Healthy corporate and household balance sheets, higher wages, well anchored inflation expectations, and low borrowing costs would act as a boost by keeping domestic demand strong, the IMF said.

Taking 2012 as a whole, the fund said it was projecting GDP to expand by 1.0 percent, down from 3.1 percent in 2011. Growth would then pick up to 1.4 precent in 2013, it predicted. The near-term outlook was, however, “clouded by a number of downside risks,” the IMF cautioned.

The biggest of these would be a possible further intensification of the eurozone’s sovereign debt crisis, “which would spill over into Germany directly through real and financial channels, and indirectly through dampened business and consumer sentiment,” it said.

PARIS - The US aircraft maker Boeing raised its 20-year forecast for global demand for airliners by $500 billion (396 billion euros) on Tuesday. Boeing said it now saw the global market doubling to 34,000 airliners worth $4,500 billion, from 33,500 aircraft worth $4,000 billion which it had forecast last year.

“The world’s aviation market is broader, deeper and more diverse than we’ve ever seen it,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“It has proven to be resilient even during some very challenging years and is driving production rate increases across the board,” he added in a statement.

Boeing based its forecast on an assumption that airline traffic would grow by five percent each year for the next two decades. Its main rival, the European manufacturer Airbus, also

expects traffic to increase at about this rate. The biggest increase in deliveries will be to the Asia-Pacific region.

Boeing expects that about one third of all airliners built, or about 12,030 planes, will be delivered there.

“As the market continues to grow, especially in emerging economies, air travel will become affordable to even more people,” Tinseth explained.

The company highlighted demand for single-aisle aircraft such as its 737 model, which is being transformed into two new versions and which Boeing expected to continue posting “robust growth” in sales.

At an estimated 23,240 aircraft over the period in question, that segment represented almost three times more than twin isle jets, at 7,950, though the forecast market value of twin aisle jets was slightly greater, at 2.08 trillion dollars.

Large jets like the double-decker Airbus A380, for which Boeing makes no equivalent model, were

estimated by the US manufacturer at a much more modest 790 aircraft worth 280 billion dollars.

Meanwhile, Boeing lowered its forecast for deliveries of cargo planes owing to a slowing of the market for air freight. Even so, it said that the market for cargo aircraft would almost double from 1,740 planes in 2012 to 3,200 in 2031.

Boeing also reacted to news that Airbus planned to build its rival to the 737, the Airbus A320 series, in the United States to ward off the negative effects of the euro’s value against the dollar. Tinseth said that “it’s not about the address on your business card” but the quality of the aircraft a company offers that would decide whether US clients bought more of their jets from one company or another.

“The first lever is the product, the capability, the quality and the price of the product, If you have the right product, you’ll be successful,” he told a telephone news conference.

DENPASAR - The number of foreign visitors to Bali rose 5.57 percent on-year to 220,700 in May 2012, the Central Statistic Agency (BPS) of Bali said.

The number, however, was 2.12 percent smaller than in the previous month,BPS head Gede Suarsa said here on Tuesday.

The visitors came mainly from Australia, followed by China, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea, Gede Suarsa said, adding Australian tourists made up 27.8 percent of the total.

The visitors in May brought the total number of foreign tourists to Bali to 1.16 million in the first five months of this year, up from 1.06 million in the same period in 2011.

The growing number of tourists contributed to an increase in the occupancy rates of hotels in Bali.

He had been airlifted to France from his besieged headquarters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

French officials, citing privacy laws, refused to reveal the precise cause of death or the nature of his condition, fuelling a host of rumours and theories as to the cause of his illness.

At the time of his death at the age of 75, Palestinian officials charged he had been poisoned by long-time foe Israel, but an inconclusive Palestinian investigation in 2005 ruled out cancer, AIDS or poisoning.

SYDNEY — Australian rescuers were trying to help a migrant-filled boat in bad weather and rough seas off Indonesia on Wednesday, a day after the countries agreed to strengthen maritime ties to combat people smuggling.

The wooden boat issued a distress call Wednesday morning and was believed to have up to 180 people on board, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Its initial location was 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Panaitan, a small island off the western end of the main Java island, but by afternoon, it had drifted within 180 miles (290 kilometers) of Christmas Island, Indonesian officials said.

The territory is nearer to Indonesia than to the Australian mainland and is a popular destination for asylum seekers. Australia holds migrants in a detention center there while their asylum claims are heard.

Poor weather was preventing rescuers on the Australian naval ship HMAS Wollongong from boarding the migrants’ boat, the maritime authority said. An Indonesian plane and navy ship were returning home from the scene as the boat moved closer to Christmas Island, said Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for its National Search and Rescue Agency.

The boat was intact and though the initial report was that it was taking on water, the precise problem was unclear, Australian officials said. NEW YORK — In the 1982 sci-fi movie “Blade Runner,” there are hints that the hero, played by Harrison Ford, is an artificial human — an “android” or “replicant.” His job is to go out and kill other, rogue androids.

If he’s an android, he’s of the latest model, Nexus 7. That’s also the name Google Inc. has picked for the first tablet to bear the Google brand.

Clearly, its mission is to go out and kill rogue tablets running Google’s Android software.

Specifically, the Nexus 7 seems to have been designed to give anyone who bought a Kindle Fire from Amazon.com Inc. or a Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble Inc. a lethal case of buyer’s remorse.

The Nexus 7 costs $199, the same that Amazon and Barnes & Noble charge for their tablets. But it’s better than theirs in significant ways, as it became clear to me after a couple of days of use.

Google announced the tablet last week and is taking pre-orders for delivery in mid-July.

“Haute couture will exist as long as people want to dream,” Didier Grumbach told The Associated Press.

The French fashion president, one of the most discreet yet powerful figures in the world of fashion thus answers detractors who predict the demise of the age-old tradition.

Grumbach believes that couture — an artisanal clothes-making method that exists only in Paris— has many healthy years ahead.

Haute couture exists against all the odds: creations which range in price from $19,000 to $125,000 being bought by women thought to number no more than 100 in the world.

“But Armani’s coming here to Paris, it shows that fashion needs haute couture. ... It’s not just about selling clothes: it’s an advert, an ideas factory,” added Grumbach.

Strong showings both from Armani Prive and Chanel prove that couture — 150 years since its birth — still has a lot to say.

Why is Google targeting the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet? Because they’ve been relatively successful competitors to Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet, yet Google is getting no benefit from their success.

Google makes its Android operating software available for any device manufacturer to use. Amazon and Barnes & Noble took Android and modified it heavily. Namely, they took out the applications that point to Google’s services and the advertising it sells. Instead, the apps point to the companies’ own stores.

In other words, these tablets are rogue Androids.

Other tablets, such as Samsung’s Galaxy, use the “proper,” Googlish version of Android, but they’ve been more expensive than the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. Apparently, Google thought it was time to make a really good, proper Android tablet for $199.

The Nexus 7 is a plain black slab with a screen that’s 7 inches on the diagonal — the same size as the Nook and the Fire. The most noticeable feature it has over the competition is a

low-resolution camera, facing the user.

That means the Nexus 7 can be used for videoconferencing, but it’s nearly impossible to use for snapshots. It also has a microphone, which the Fire lacks, making Amazon’s device useless even for audio conferencing.

The screen has a higher resolution than the Fire, and colors look more vivid. The whole tablet is slightly thinner and appreciably lighter than the Fire.

Other nifty but invisible hardware upgrades on the Nexus 7 include Bluetooth and GPS chips for use with headsets and navigation software. The tablet even has a chip for near-field communications, which means it can “talk” to some phones and store payment terminals when tapped against them. I used the Nexus 7 to pay for toilet paper in a drugstore.

But the most important difference between the Nexus 7 and its prey is the software. Not only is it running stock Android, but it’s also the first device to run the latest version of Android. Google, with its trademark combination of cute and cutthroat, calls it “Jelly Bean.”

In Bali, the circulation of illegal or fake drug, food and beverage as well as cosmetic products remained fairly widespread. To anticipate the ubiquitous circulation of those illegal products, in the near future the BBPOM Bali will establish a Task Force for Illegal Drugs and Food Eradication.

It was expressed by the Head of BBPOM Bali, Corry Pandjaitan, accompanied by the Head of Inspection and Investigation, I Gusti Ayu Adhi Aryapatni in Denpasar.

According to Corry, the Task Force was announced by Vice President at the beginning of 2011.

Eradication of illegal drug, food and beverage as well as cosmetics aimed at guaranteeing the public health because the quality of those illegal products could not be accounted. In addition, establishment of the Task Force also posed a measure to ensure the sustainability of the domestic

industry. The main target of the Task Force was importers bringing in food supplies from overseas and the distributors. To enforce the law against those illegal products, her party would involve all the elements related to the law.

“We always keep an eye on the products in circulation the field and get around throughout the regions in Bali. Even, the dominant products in the market are alleged to come from China,” he said.

Based on the result of illegal drugs and food eradication made

by BBPOM Bali until the beginning of 2012, it had exterminated 2,173 items consisting of 53,059 packages estimated to value at IDR 560,189, 793. Such amount was considered to decrease if compared to the findings in 2009 and 2010 where in 2009 was found 10,727 items and 150,073 packages worth over IDR 2 billion.

Meanwhile, in 2010 the findings amounted to 5,508 items and 72,325 packages estimated to value at more than IDR 989 million.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

“Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,” his spokesman said Friday, adding nothing since despite mounting speculation about

what led to Holmes’s decision.

Their fairytale love affair had started so well. Cruise famously jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch professing his love for Holmes during a whirlwind courtship that culminated in a proposal under the Eiffel Tower.

But the divorce will be the third for Cruise, following his marriage to US actress Mimi Rogers from 1987-1990 and Australian Nicole Kidman from 1990-2001. He also had a three-year relationship with Spanish star Penelope Cruz.

screen over the three decades, Cruise has been less successful in his personal life.

A lawyer for the Church of Scientology -- of which Cruise is a prominent member -- denied Monday sending anyone to follow Holmes, or that Cruise wanted Suri to join the Sea Organization, described as a boot camp for the religion.

JAKARTA - An Indonesian court on Wednesday threw out an anti-drug group’s legal challenge against a presidential decision to slash the jail term of Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby.

The state administrative court in Jakarta rejected the challenge from the National Movement Against Narcotics (GRANAT) against the Indonesian president’s five-year reduction of Corby’s 20-year jail term.

The court last month examined documents submitted by the group arguing that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s act of clemency in May was unjustified and drug traffickers posed a “dangerous threat” to the younger generation.

The group’s lawyer Henry Yosodiningrat said they would appeal the decision.
