LOS ANGELES - Comedian Kathy Griffin tearfully apologized in a Friday press conference for posing with a fake bloodied and severed head depicting U.S. President Donald Trump, saying that she felt her career was now over and that Trump “broke” her.

Griffin has lost sponsorships and jobs, including her role as co-host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage with journalist Anderson Cooper, since a photograph and video from the shoot appeared on social media on Tuesday.

President Trump said the image of Griffin with the gory mask resembling him was “sick” and that it had traumatized his family, especially his youngest son, 11-year-old Barron.

Trump’s oldest son, Donald Jr., called for employers to drop the comedian.

“I don’t think I will have a career after this. I’m going to be honest, (Trump) broke me,” said Griffin, 56, a two-time Emmy-winning performer known for her deliberately provocative brand of humor. She added that she had received death threats.

Griffin reiterated the apology she posted on social media late on Tuesday, but remained defiant, saying, “I’m not afraid of Donald Trump, he’s a bully,” adding that she intended

to continue making jokes about the president.

She also described herself as a provocative woman who has often had to deal with older white men in positions of power.

“What’s happening to me has never happened ever, in the history of this great country, which is that a sitting president of the United States and his grown children and the first lady are personally, I feel, trying to ruin my life - forever,” she said.

Griffin said the photo was intended to mock Trump’s comments during the presidential campaign, when he told CNN that Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly had “blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her - wherever” when she moderated a 2015 presidential debate.

Trump’s remark was widely interpreted as referring to menstrual blood, implying that Kelly was in an unfriendly mood because she was menstruating. (rtr)

U.S. singer Grande delights fans with UK hospital visit LONDON - U.S. pop singer Ariana Grande has paid a surprise visit to young fans who were injured in a suicide attack on a concert she gave in Manchester last month, posing with them for selfies and signing t-shirts. Grande returned to Britain on Friday to lead an all-star benefit concert on Sunday and quickly headed for a hospital in the northern English city where many of the injured are being treated.

Adam Harrison told the BBC his daughter Lily “felt like a rock star” after meeting her idol late on Friday and was “chomping at the bit” to attend the concert.

The “One Love Manchester” concert will also feature Coldplay, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Take That and the Black Eyed Peas.

It will take place at the Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Fans who attended Grande’s show that was targeted by the bomber are being offered free tickets to the concert which will be broadcast on British television. Proceeds from tickets sold will go to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund set up to aid grieving families and victims of the attack. (rtr)

UK leader: Islamic extremism must be contained after attack

LONDON — Prime Minister Theresa May Sunday called for tougher measures to fight Islamic extremism after attackers using a vehicle and knives killed seven people in a busy area of London and disrupted Britain’s election campaign just days before a nationwide vote. The assault unfolded — and ended — quickly, with police fatally shooting the three attackers within eight minutes. But the men had achieved their apparent goal of turning a balmy summer night in Britain’s capital into a scene of carnage.

It began Saturday night when a van veered off the road and barreled into pedestrians on busy London Bridge.

The three men fled the van with large knives and attacked people at bars and restaurants in nearby Borough Market, police and witnesses said.

Police said counter-terrorism officers raided several addresses in Barking,

an east London suburb, and arrested 12 people there Sunday morning in connection with the attack.

Emergency officials said 48 people, including a transport police officer and an off-duty officer, were treated at hospitals across London. Some suffered life-threatening injuries.

Airplane departures increases by 5.43 percent

DENPASAR - The number of international airplane departures from Ngurah Rai Airport in April 2017 reached 2,505 flight units. This number showed an increase of 5.43 percent compared to the previous month reaching 2,376 units. Such condition is in line with the number of international passenger flights in the same period, which increased by 8.67 percent, from 418,582 people in March 2017 to 454,882 people in April 2017.

It was revealed at the press conference of the central statistic agency (BPS) of Bali on Friday (Jun 2). Head of the BPS Bali, Adi Nugroho, said that in line with the airplane departure, the number of baggage and international air transport freight also increased by 10.72 percent, from 7.87 million tons to 8.71 million tons.

For domestic air transport, the number of aircraft departing from Ngurah Rai Airport in April 2017 amounted to 3,298 flight units, an increase of 1.10 percent compared to the previous month reaching 3,262 flight units.

This condition is not different from the number of passengers amounting to 421,255 people, or an increase of 11.29 percent compared to the previous month reaching 378,507 people. It is also in line with the number of baggage and freight increasing by 30.77 percent from 4.06 million tons in March 2017 to 5.31

million tons in April 2017. The number of baggage and air freight in international flight also increased by 10.72 percent, from 7.87 million tons to 8.71 million tons. Five countries becoming the main destinations for international airplane departure in April 2017 are Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong.

Compared to the previous month, out of the five countries, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and China respectively showed an increase of 9.47 percent, 1.53 percent, 19.17 percent and 5.79 percent. Hong Kong decreased by 6.20 percent. In the meantime, the destination of departing passengers covered five countries namely Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong where all increased respectively by 10.47 percent, 6.70 percent, 15.20 percent, 11.18 percent and 5.78 percent. The increase in the number of aircraft and the number of passengers is alleged to have been caused by long weekend holiday on April 14-16 and April 22-24, 2017.

Furthermore, when compared to April 2016, from the five destination countries there were two destination countries experiencing a decrease in the number of aircraft flight namely Australia and Hong Kong respectively amounting to 4.03 percent, and 17.49 percent.

Then, for destination countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and China, there was an increase in the number of departing passengers respectively amounting to 21.15 percent, 36.84 percent, and 83.57 percent. (kmb42)

SINGARAJA - Tectonic earthquakes remain to frequently shake the area of Tejakula village. This causes local residents restless.

Besides, some residents are also worried about the damage to their buildings. Headman of Tejakula, Ketut Suardana, revealed that since a few days ago the earthquake has often hit his territory. The last one took place on Thursday (Jun 1) around 21:22 with the magnitude of below 3 on Richter scale. “Yesterday another earthquake occurred, but was not so strong,” he said on Friday (Jun 2).

Although relatively being small, the natural phenomenon has caused many residents to be restless, especially when the earthquake took place at night. All residents directly went out to find a safer place. “Our residents are quite uneasy if an earthquake occurs.

Surely they will flow out, while the quake leaves no damaged,” he said.

Carnival of Cultures

BERLIN - Since 1966, the Carnival of Cultures has been celebrated every year on Pentecost weekend in Kreuzberg, Berlin: opulent costumes, powerful makeup, imaginative masks, and decorated hand carts make their way through the streets demonstrating the cultural diversity of Berlin. Over the four-day street festival, there are culinary delicacies and all sorts of items from all over the world on offer.

During the Carnival of Cultures, a colourful hustle and bustle is prominent on Blücherplatz: over the multi-day street festival, there are culinary delicacies and all sorts of items from all over the world.

From fresh coconuts and sweet potatoes to eccentric accessories, to clothing and hand-made crafts, there is something for every taste at almost 400 stands. On the many stages, you can also hear music from various regions around the world.

The highlight of the Carnival of Cultures is the street procession on Pentecost Sunday (mid-May to mid-June) with around 4,700

participants from 80 countries who boldly celebrate the cultural diversity of Berlin with traditional costumes and ritual dances. The caravans begin at noon on Hermannplatz and continue until evening across Hasenheide and Yorckstraße to Möckernstraße. The participating groups represent the cultural diversity of Berlin and are impressive with their elaborate costumes and rehearsed dances. The most original and fantastical performances are awarded by judges.

Around one million people attend the Carnival of Cultures every year, thus making the street festival one of Berlin’s largest open air events. Along with the carnival, there are also numerous parties and music events as well as a comprehensive programme for children.

The idea for this event came from the workshop of the cultures, which was launched in the multination district Kreuzberg in 1993.

The carnival was to be used as an demonstration of peace and colour, the idea of a tolerant and open society. It began in 1996 with 2,000 participants and 50,000 visi-

tors, and soon developed into one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. Nowadays more than 4,000 participants and far more than a million visitors attend the spectacle. Since 2000 the most beautiful displays and costumes are awarded. In addition to the carnival parade through Kreuzberg, a festival on the Bluecherplatz with music from around the world is an integral part of the Carnival of Cultures.

The Karneval der Kulturen will therefore take place for the 22nd time from June 2-5, and will reflect again on Berlin’s diversity, with people from more than 180 countries living in the German capital.

The highlight of the four-day

festival is the street parade through Berlin’s multicultural district, Kreuzberg, held on June 4. Over 60 participating groups, including samba dancers, drummers and stilt walkers, will be performing.

The street festival also boasts over 300 stands with food and art crafts from different cultures. Four stages will be welcoming numerous international bands and DJs. Eight additional “Music Corners”

will offer a stage for more intimate performances.

The fall of the Berlin Wall led to an increased internationalization of the city, but also to the emergence of stronger nationalist and racist movements in the 1990s. Reacting to this phenomenon, the City of Berlin launched the Karneval der Kulturen to celebrate its multiculturalism and tolerance - and keeps doing so to this day. (IBP/net)

In addition to the scenery of Bunut Bolong, around the location there are many natural attractions. Tourists can do trekking into the forest or have cycling tour. Along the trekking route starting from Bunut Bolong, tourists cross the path of settlements and plantation of residents. On the track, tourists can encounter a sarcophagus where local people believe that it is efficacious. Water in the sarcophagus is said to be effective for healing. Throughout the forest track, tourists can enjoy lovely views of cliff and lush verdant trees. The track is now developed into a tourist destination and is often used for activities.

In addition to foreign tourists, the track is also introduced to students and the public at large. Chairman of central executive of Hindu youth association (Peradah) of Jembrana, I Komang Kurniawan, strongly supported the introduction of this track in addition to developing regional tourism as well as appreciating the nature (environmental aspect). Not long ago, Peradah also introduced the track by inviting students and communities and the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Jembrana Chapter through Bunut Bolong forest tracking activity.

Ketut Naba, one of the local residents, said that the area has now been being arranged. Previously, the ficus tree tunnel passed through by asphalt road for one lane only was actually not perforated, according to local residents.

Then, during the Dutch colonial period the tall ficus tree was perforated. At that time, many residents have lived around Manggisari and the Dutch colonial built road access to facilitate the smooth transportation leading the plantations.

At that time, native residents were employed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to help open road access from plantation to nearest harbor. However, the project was hampered by large ficus tree at the temple location. They could not pass because on the left side there is a cliff and a temple in the north side. Finally, it was decided to perforate the ficus tree. At first glance, the hollow in the ficus tree looked small, but actually it can be crossed by a large truck.

In terms of spiritual perspective, the tunnel tree is not a tree but a red brick gate. It is just like split gates or apit lawang. Previously, it was flanked by rosewood in the right and left side of the tree. However, now only one tree remains.

It is said that if people would like to pass through the ficus tree tunnel, they must ask for permission whether they are pedestrians or vehicles. Not everyone can pass through the tunnel. Naba mentioned if there is an entourage of wedding or death person wishing to pass, it must cross the road next to ficus tree. (olo)

A robber especially targeting foreigners at villa arrested

DENPASAR — A robber especially targeting villas in Ubud with the initials AD, 39, was arrested by Section Head of Escort and Patrol, Sub-Directorate of General Assignment, Directorate of Public Services of Bali Police, I Dewa Nyoman Sudiarsa, at the boarding house on Jalan Gelogor Carik, Gang Selamet, last Wednesday (May 31). AD has long been a fugitive of Ubud police related to robbery cases against three foreigners at three villas.

by Sudiarsa, explained on Friday (Jun 2) that at 07:00 Local Time he was on duty of arranging traffic at the intersection of Jalan Pulau Galang at Gelogor Carik. At that time, a resident living at Taman Sari Residence Denpasar came and informed that the suspect AD stays at his boarding house.

“The resident said that formerly AD had been raided by mobile detective unit of Ubud police but managed to escape,” said Sudiarsa.

After getting the information, Sudiarsa directly came to the boarding

house. Arriving there, AD immediately escaped to an alley and was immediately chased. Eventually, AD could be arrested at a dead end alley.

“The suspect tried to jump over the wall at the end of the alley and but I immediately pulled his leg.

So, it immediately made him not move,” he said.

In the meantime, Hengky Widjaja added that based on interrogation results, AD admitted to be from Kampung Buyang, Makassar, and a recidivist. In his action, AD claimed to damage the door

or window of the targeted villas.

Furthermore, he brought along the valuables belonging to the foreign tourists living at the villa.

“Further, we make coordination with chief of Ubud police criminal investigation unit. The suspect AD was immediately taken to Ubud police station for further inspection process. I would like to thank the resident who has been willing to help police by providing information related to the existence of the perpetrator,” said Hengky Widjaja. (kmb36)

Deputy regent criticizes garbage at Gilimanuk Bay NEGARA — The arrangement of Gilimanuk Bay area as a tourist destination becomes a priority this year. Gilimanuk is considered strategic because its position as the main entrance to Bali Island and supported by the natural coastal beauty of Gilimanuk Bay. This arrangement is also required to change the ambience of Gilimanuk showing the characteristics of Bali.

Deputy Regent of Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan, led in person on Friday (Jun 2) the direct preparation of development as well as site inspection. He said there are a number of arrangements denoting the measures of the government of Jembrana to conjure up Gilimanuk into a better tourist destination offering the ambience of Bali. One of them is at Gilimanuk Bay with the arrangement of parking lot and merchants. He criticized the management of the Gilimanuk Bay area.

After the construction of Shiva Statue Park, he wanted to complete the facility of the area located adjacent with the Gilimanuk Museum by arranging the area of merchant and fence with planter box, lights along the area, toilet facilities, changing rooms and a water tower.

In the future, he hoped the management of Gilimanuk Bay under the local tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) can be maximized by more tightly handling the garbage problem as well as the hawkers who are still selling outside.

Dozens of residents of Songan Hill rushed to hospital

BANGLI — Dozens of residents at some hamlets in the area behind the Songan Hill, Kintamani, experienced symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting accompanied by diarrhea. Allegedly the residents suffered food poisoning from fermented cassava purchased at a local stall. Until Saturday (Jun 3), there were at least 12 out of 27 residents becoming the poisoning victims that were still undergoing treatment at Kintamani health center V, clinic and Pratama Hospital in Karangasem.

As information compiled, the 27 people suffering from poisoning are from six hamlets namely Bukit Tungtung (14 persons), Kendal (1 person), Munduk Lantang (1 person), Bantas (2 persons), Kayu Selem (8 persons) and Balingkang (1 person).

They experienced the symptoms of poisoning such as abdominal pain, vomiting, dizziness and diarrhea on Thursday morning (Jun 1). Since the condition was quite alarming, on Thursday morning the 27 residents were rushed to get medical treatment by their families.

Of the 27 poisoning victims, they were mostly treated at Pratama Hospital at West Tianyar village, Kubu, Karangasem. In the meantime, some others were treated at Galang Kangin clinic Karangasem and Kintamani health center V at Songan village.

Hamlet chief of Kayuselem, Songan B, I Komang Catur Yasa, when asked for his confirmation,

said the 27 people had symptoms of food poisoning after consuming fermented cassava on Wednesday afternoon (May 31). They purchased it from a stall belonging to Ni Kari, a resident at Kayuselem.

“Ni Kari who makes this fermented cassava was also rushed to hospital because she is experiencing the same symptoms,” he explained.

Catur Yasa claimed not to know exactly what made the fermented cassava of Ni Kari poisonous. To know the exact cause, he claimed to have directly coordinated with the health authority. “We have coordinated with Kintamani public health center V and forward it to health agency. Yesterday there were some health workers coming here to take samples of the fermented cassava and water. The results have not been submitted yet,” he said.

In addition to health workers, the health officials were also admitted to have come down to location to

check. He added that some of the 27 residents rushed to hospital have been allowed to go home. Until Saturday afternoon, he got information there were ten residents remaining to be treated at Pratama Hospital, Karangasem, a resident at Galang Kangin clinic and another resident at Kintamani public health center.

In the meantime, subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, when asked for his confirmation separately also admitted that dozens of residents in the hilly areas experienced the symptoms of poisoning and they were rushed to hospital and public health center to get immediate help and some of them have been allowed to go home. A number of residents rushed their poisoned family member to Pratama Hospital in Kubu, Karangasem, because the road access to Bangli region is badly damaged and not passable by cars. (kmb40)

Unsure of U.S., Asia builds new alliances to counter China

SINGAPORE - Several Asian nations are seeking to bolster informal alliances among themselves, regional diplomats and officials said, unsettled by growing fears that the United States could not be relied on to maintain a buffer against China’s assertiveness.

Countries including Australia, Japan, India and Vietnam are quietly stepping up discussions and cooperation, although taking care they do not upset Beijing, the diplomats said. No one was yet talking about a formal alliance. Inaugurating the weekend Shangri-La Dialogue, the region’s premier security forum,

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said: “In this brave new world we cannot rely on great powers to safeguard our interests.

and friends.”

His comments resonated through the three-day meeting that ended on Sunday. Regional officials and analysts said there was growing mistrust of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, especially because of his withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on trade and then, last week, the pullout from the Paris climate accord.

Many fear Trump is signalling a deeper retreat from a traditional U.S. security role that has underpinned the region for decades.

U.S. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis told the Singapore forum that Washington remained committed to the region and insisted it would oppose China’s militarisation of the disputed South China Sea, one of Asia’s most volatile hotspots.

Regional officials said they were worried by Trump’s unpredictability and concerned that his warm praise of Chinese President Xi Jinping after their first summit meeting in April would influence any decisions on Asia.

“We trust Mattis and we trust (U.S. Pacific Commander Harry)

Harris but at the very top? The trust gap is very wide,” said one senior Asian military officer.

“Our fear is driven by the reality that it is only the U.S. that is powerful enough to set red lines with China.”

Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Asia was still trying to figure out Trump’s policy in the region.

Residents trapped as gunfire mars ceasefire at Philippines city

MARAWI CITY - Thousands of civilians hoping to flee fighting in the besieged Philippines city of Marawi remained trapped on Sunday after a four-hour ceasefire to evacuate residents was marred by gunfire.

Only 134 were freed on Sunday, less than on previous days, despite government hopes that more than 1,000 would be able to leave a city battered by 13 days of intense fighting.

Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte predicted the siege would be over within days despite fierce resistance by fighters aligned to Islamic State in the dense urban heart of the southern Philippines city.

“This will be over in about three more days,” Duterte said on Saturday after visiting a hospital in Cagayan de Oro where wounded soldiers were being treated.

“I will not hesitate to use every power available.”

About 400 local militants rein-

forced by about 40 foreign fighters stormed Marawi on May 23, using sophisticated battlefield tactics to take control of large swaths of the lakeside city.

They have been pushed back to the city centre by Philippines forces over the past week after some 4,000 ground troops were bolstered by helicopters and aircraft deploying rockets and bombs.

Many residents have told Reuters that the airstrikes caused extensive property damage and dozens of civilian deaths. Authorities lifted the civilian death toll from 20 to 38 on Sunday - but said all those deaths were caused by militants.

A presidential spokesman said 120 militants had died, along with 38 government forces.

Duterte said the use of air power had been restrained so far.

“I can end this war in 24 hours,” he said. “All I have to do is to bomb the whole place and level it to the

ground.”

Duterte has asked the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), an Islamic separatist movement based on the Philippines island of Mindanao, to help negotiate a peace settlement with the Islamist fighters, who are predominantly drawn from the Maute Group based in and around Marawi.

Marawi, dubbed the “Islamic City of Marawi”, is also located on Mindanao, which has a large Muslim population in a predominantly Catholic country and been destabilised by separatist insurgencies for decades.

MILF cadres organised Sunday’s ceasefire, which was to run from 8 am until noon. They roamed the streets with loud hailers urging residents to leave.

But by 9am, gunfire had broken out, apparently deterring residents from joining a mass exodus.

“Between 2008 and 2017, 10 years, the average economic growth rate was 1 percent. That’s a lost decade. The reasons are the failure to conduct reforms and the state takeover of the economy,” said Alexei Kudrin, a former finance minister.

The liberal camp’s main prescriptions for the economy involve a privatisation programme to shrink the state’s role, decisive steps to rein in law enforcement agencies that they say harass businesses, and guarantees that bureaucrats will not steal businesses from their owners.

This camp has some influence.

CHICAGO — An Illinois man who typed out emoji and other text messages to advise his cousin thousands of miles away on how to kill a wealthy Chicago woman vacationing in Indonesia was sentenced on Friday to nine years in prison. At Robert Bibbs’ sentencing in Chicago federal court, a prosecutor placed the fruit-stand handle used to bludgeon Sheila von Wiese-Mack at a Bali beach resort by the judge’s bench. Relatives cried later as prosecutors displayed a photograph of the 62-year-old’s body in a suitcase, where her killers stuffed the body.

Bibbs, 26, of Chicago, told Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer he’d been depressed in 2014 when his cousin Tommy Schaefer sought guidance on how he and his girlfriend, Heather Mack — Wiese-Mack’s daughter — should commit the murder. For his help, Bibbs hoped for a cut of the mom’s inheritance. “To this day, I don’t recognize the person in those messages,” he said about his texts, standing in court shackled at the ankles. And he added: “I never expected them to do something so horrific.” Judge Pallmeyer scolded Bibbs for describing his advisory role as “a mistake.” “A mistake is leaving your keys in the car,” she told him. “A mistake is not standing by and encouraging an unjustified murder.”

Autopsy photos showed to the judge showed Wiese-Mack’s body with deep gashes across her face and wounds on her arms that prosecutors say resulted from her desperate bid to fend off the blows. Within minutes of his cousin texting on Aug. 12, 2014, that the murder was done, Pallmeyer also noted that the

men traded casual messages about NBA basketball news.

One of Bibbs’ texts incorporated a “high-five” emoji to indicate he approved of their bid to kill Wiese-Mack, who was a widow of highly regarded jazz and classical composer James L. Mack, who died in 2006. Another time, Bibbs said Schaefer could smother WieseMack, texting: “Go sit on her face wit a pillow.” Bibbs pleaded guilty in December to conspiracy to commit foreign murder of a U.S. citizen, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years. But Bibbs lack of a previous criminal record and other factors meant he wouldn’t face the maximum penalty. Prosecutors had asked for up to 11 years.

Indonesian authorities arrested Schaefer, now 24, and Mack, 21, after the bloodied suitcase was found in a taxi. In 2015, a court in Indonesia sentenced Schaefer to 18 years in prison for the murder; Mack received a 10-year term for helping. Wiese-Mack’s youngster sister, Debbi Curran, also spoke at Bibbs’ sentencing. She described how she had searched the internet the day she learned of her sister’s death in Bali — only to see a crime photo online of the suitcase that still contained her sister’s body.

“I can’t look at a suitcase (now) without thinking of my sister’s half-naked body ... in a suitcase,” she said. “This will haunt me for the rest of my life.” Bill Wiese told the court about his sister’s love of classical music and opera, and how she supported the arts, including by opening her home to aspiring musicians. “I only wish I could have protected her from this brutal murder,” he said.(ap)

France, India to cooperate in fighting climate change

PARIS - French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday their countries would cooperate in the fight against climate change, just days after the U.S. withdrew from the Paris climate agreement.

Modi, whose country is the world’s third-biggest emissions generator, said in Russia on Friday that he would continue to back the deal and Macron has said the 2015 Paris agreement is irreversible despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw.

“The protection of the environment and the mother planet is an article of faith,” Modi said at a joint news conference with Macron in Paris.

The two leaders, who met for the first time, announced no contracts or new initiatives.

“We are both convinced that our countries have to do a lot for the ecological and environmental transition and the fight against global warming,” Macron said, adding that France would go above and beyond its Paris agreement commitments.

He said he planned a visit to India before year-end for a first summit of the International Solar Alliance, an initiative launched by New Delhi and Paris during the Paris climate talks.

Macron said the alliance will lead to concrete measures in favour of solar energy and commit the companies of both nations.

The alliance seeks to mobilise more than a trillion dollars by 2030 and bring together well over 100 solar-rich countries to deliver solar energy to some of the planet’s poorest.

The two leaders said they had also discussed how to combat terrorism and that they would work on concrete initiatives before the end of the year to fight terrorism

Deadly blasts hit funeral mourners after protests in Afghan capital

KABUL - A series of blasts in Kabul on Saturday killed at least six people at a funeral for one of the victims of clashes between police and protesters a day before.

The explosions continued a wave of violence in the capital since a devastating truck bomb on Wednesday and prompted a renewed appeal for calm from the United Nations special envoy to Afghanistan.

Authorities had blocked the streets of Kabul in a bid to prevent a repeat of the bloody confrontation between protesters and police on Friday.

UN envoy Tadamichi Yamamoto issued a statement calling for “urgent measures to halt the cycle of violence”.

“Calm is now called for. Ensuring security in Kabul is an urgent priority, as this city continues to experience the highest number of civilian casualties,” he said.

The violence, fuelled by public anger over the inability of President Ashraf Ghani’s divided government to ensure security in Kabul, has exacerbated political tensions between rival factions, and Ghani issued a call for unity.

It further complicates the situation confronting U.S. and coalition officials as they work on plans expected to see an increase of between 3,000 and 5,000 in the number of foreign troops in Afghanistan.

“The country is under attack,” Ghani said in a message on Twitter.

“We must be strong and united.”

The interior ministry said there were six dead and 87 wounded from Saturday’s blasts.

Kabul’s Italian-run Emergency Hospital, which has handled a stream of trauma injuries over the past few days, said it had treated 20 wounded brought in to the hospital.

Earlier it said that 19 people had been reported killed but later confirmed it had been referring to media reports and said there were no dead at the hospital. Eyewitnesses at the funeral said that they had seen at least 12 dead.

Government Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah was at the funeral but was unharmed, while survivors said a series of explosions had ripped through the crowd, most of whom appeared to be linked to Abdullah’s mainly Tajik Jamiat-e-Islami party.

“There were sounds of explosions everywhere and I saw my hands and face were on fire,” said Mohammad Azim, who was being treated for burns at the Emergency Hospital.

“There were parts of human bodies everywhere.”

One of the most bloody weeks in Kabul for months began with the devastating truck bomb attack in the city’s diplomatic zone on Wednesday morning which killed more than 80 people and wounded more than 460.

That was followed by five more deaths on Friday during clashes which broke out between protesters and police at a rally demanding the resignations of Ghani and Abdullah over repeated security failures.

Soon after, reports started coming in of stabbings at Borough Market, a nearby area full of bars and restaurants surrounding a popular food market.

Police tweeted a warning telling people in the area to run to safety, hide and then call police if it was safe to do so. They asked Londoners to “remain calm but be alert and vigilant.” (ap)

Indonesia, Philippines front wider effort against militants

SINGAPORE — Joint patrols by three Southeast Asian countries in the Sulu Sea may be the start of a larger regional effort to keep Islamic militants at bay, officials said Sunday. The patrols will be conducted by forces from Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, starting with sea operations from June, with air and land patrols starting at a later date. The initiative in the Sulu Sea, an area bounded by the Malaysian state of Sabah and the southern Philippines, is a “collective agreement that is followed by the operational level,” Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said. It will feature joint command posts and exercises between the trio’s ground forces.

Joint patrols are an attempt “to prevent and protect our border, to close the border so that militants don’t go to other areas,” Ryamizard said. “If the situation escalates and extends to other waters, we would like to request other countries to join.”

Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population. Ryamizard was speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a security conference in Singapore attended by defense ministers and experts from 39 countries.

The presence of Islamic militants has been felt the region. Philippine troops are struggling to end a bloody siege by 500 Islamic State group-aligned extremists in the southern city of Marawi, one of the boldest militant attacks in Southeast Asia in years.

I believe this can be a framework for other countries like the Middle East,” he added.

Singapore Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen said that he has offered assistance, in the form of an information-sharing center at Changi Naval Base. China has been asked to contribute its ships. Responding to a question from a member of the Chinese delegation, Ryamizard said: “It is like peace patrols. It is very important to underline that it is joint peace patrols.”

The inclusion of China is sensitive as the country has pitted itself against smaller Southeast Asian neighbors in claiming disputed islands, coral reefs and lagoons in the South China Sea. Thai Ariya to replace Ko as world number one

NEW JERSEY - Ariya Jutanugarn will replace Lydia Ko as the top ranked player in women’s golf after her rival for number one spot, South Korea’s Ryu So-yeon, missed the cut at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in New Jersey on Saturday.

Ko, who has held top spot for 84 weeks, is not playing in the event and was certain to relinquish her crown to either Ariya, another absentee in

New Jersey, or Ryu, who had to finish at least third to displace the New Zealander.

Golden State among best teams I’ve seen, says LeBron

CLEVELAND - Cleveland forward LeBron James said the top-seeded Golden State Warriors are among the best teams he has seen but is confident his Cavaliers can avenge their blowout loss in Game One when the teams meet again on Sunday.

James had 28 points and 15 rebounds in the Finals opener but also turned the ball over eight times, costly errors that helped pave the way to a 113-91 Warriors win.

“I’ve seen a lot of great teams, and they rank right up there. They work well together,” he told reporters on Saturday during practice in Oakland.

“They have some guys that can actually lead a franchise without anybody else by themselves,” he said of the Warriors, who have four All Stars and posted the NBA’s best record this season.

The Warriors are an NBA record 13-0 in this year’s playoffs, and their undefeated record will not be broken on Sunday unless Cleveland takes better care of the ball, James said.

“Turning the ball over, that’s one thing we did in Game One that we’re going to be very conscious about going into Game Two, especially on their home floor,” he said.

Turnovers are particularly costly against a Golden State team that thrives in transition basketball, either finding one of their sharp-shooting guards for a three-pointer or driving to the basket for an easy lay-up or dunk.

“Game One was the feel-out for us, and they definitely took advantage of all our miscues. We just have to get better,” James said.

After their defense looked unable to stop Warriors forward Kevin Durant from driving to the basket in Game One, James said the Cavaliers could be more physical in Game Two. “That’s always been something that we talk about, so we look forward to seeing what we can bring to the game in Game Two,” he said. CARDIFF — After another potent demonstration of Cristiano Ronaldo’s enduring scoring prowess, surely no Real Madrid fan can contemplate criticizing him now. Particularly after the world player of the year ensured Madrid pulled off one of soccer’s hardest feats, becoming the first team to successfully defend their Champions League title. The fans who irritated Ronaldo so much ahead of Saturday’s final due to their whistling were silenced in emphatic style with two goals in a 4-1 victory over Juventus that gave Madrid a record-extending 12th European crown.

“People don’t have words to criticize,” Ronaldo said, “because the numbers don’t lie.” They certainly don’t after another incredible season, even at the age of 32. “My age is just a number,” Ronaldo said. “I feel like a young boy.”

At the end of the 25th season of the Champions League, Ronaldo is the first player to score in three of the competition’s finals. And having lifted the European Cup once with Manchester United, Ronaldo has done it three times in four seasons with Madrid.

It’s the latest piece of silverware in an incredible 12 months for the forward.

It began with Ronaldo winning his first title with Portugal at the European Championship. Then came the Club World Cup with Real Madrid and the end of a five-year Spanish title drought before new highs were reached in the Champions League. His career goal tally in club and international soccer now stands at 600.

Ronaldo’s first strike at Millennium Stadium was canceled out by Mario Mandzukic’s exquisite 27th-minute hook shot. It was the only high point for Juventus on a night when the Italian champion was outclassed in its quest for a first European title in 21 years. Madrid’s supremacy was clear in the second half. After Casemiro put the Spanish champions back in front in the 61st, Ronaldo turned in the third at the near post inside three minutes, and Marco Asensio wrapped up the scoring in the 90th.

Juventus conceded more goals on the night than it had on the journey to the final, having let in only three in the previous 12 games. “In the second half Real Madrid pushed the accelerator,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said, “and we remained too static and sat back too long.” Madrid’s attacking brilliance proved too hard for Juventus to contain, giving Zinedine Zidane his second Champions League title in 18 months of top-flight management.

“Zidane believes in us a lot,” Ronaldo said. “He knows that we are a very good team and that is why we proved it in the second half.” Until now, no team since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, when the cup was only a knockout competition, had won back-to-back titles.

Madrid had a lot to thank Keylor Navas for in the opening minutes. The goalkeeper blocked a header and strike from Gonzalo Higuain, and produced a one-handed save when Miralem Pjanic picked a gap through a crowd of defenders. It was the culmination of a counterattack of breathtaking speed launched by Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Karim Benzema picked up possession and passed to Ronaldo. The world player of the year knocked the ball across to Dani Carvajal on the right flank before drifting into the penalty area to receive it back and beat Buffon. But within seven minutes, Ronaldo was shaking his head and scowling after seeing an equalizer of individual brilliance.

Leonardo Bonucci’s deep ball was brought down by Alex Sandro, who cut it back to Higuain in the penalty area. With his back to goal, Mandzukic received the chipped pass from Higuain and used his chest to control the ball before hooking it over his shoulder into the far top corner. The magnificence evoked memories of another showpiece staged in the U.K. in 2002 when Zidane volleyed into the top corner in Glasgow to help Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen.

This time, Zidane was a spectator on the Madrid sidelines, but enjoying it just as much. His team’s domination was verified after the break when Madrid went back in front - through Casemiro’s strike that deflected off Sami Khedira - and this time the lead was retained.

It owed much to Madrid controlling midfield, largely thanks to Modric, who set up Ronaldo’s second. The Croatian timed his cutback to perfection in the 64th to allow Ronaldo to ghost in between Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini and slot in at the near post.

Juve’s night took a turn for the worse when Juan Cuadrado was dismissed for a second booking in the 84th. And to compound their misery, Asensio beat Buffon again as the 39-year-old goalkeeper missed out on a first European title. “(Madrid) showed their class and the attitude needed to play in this kind of game,” Buffon said after losing a third final. We were powerless to resist Real firepower, says Allegri

CARDIFF - Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri said even his side’s rock-like defence was powerless to resist Real Madrid’s firepower as the Italian club’s hopes of a first Champions League triumph in 21 years ended in heartache on Saturday. The Italian champions’ defensive wall had been almost impregnable all season in Europe but was reduced to rubble as Real roared to victory with three goals after the break.

“In the first half we played beautifully but they pushed the accelerator in the second half and we could not resist,” Allegri, whose side had been bidding to become the eighth club to land the “treble” having won Serie A and the Copa Italia this year, told reporters. But the granite-like trio of Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci cracked after Juventus had been the better side in a first half that ended 1-1. “The two goals in quick succession hurt us and we were not able to react,” Allegri said.

“The only criticism I could make is that after the second goal we should have stayed in the game mentally to make sure we still had chances.” In a sizzling first half, Cristiano Ronaldo put Real ahead before Mario Man-

dzukic’s incredible overhead kick, one of the great European Cup final goals, deservedly drew Juventus level under the Principality Stadium roof.

Juventus retreated after the break, though, and Casemiro’s deflected strike restored Real’s lead on the hour before Ronaldo struck the killer blow three minutes later. After substitute Juan Cuadrado was sent off, Marco Asensio rubbed salt into Juve’s wounds as they fell to their fifth successive defeat in a Champions League final.

“I had to take some risks tonight,” Allegri said. “We had to try to score a goal, get ahead, and then defend in the second part of the game. But we were not able to do that. “With a bit more luck we could have finished the first half in the lead and then it would have been a different match.”

With keeper Gianluigi Buffon close to 40, Barzagli 36 and Chiellini and Bonucci the wrong side of 30, it is tempting to suggest that Juve’s rearguard will soon need rebuilding. Allegri, however, said the crushing defeat was far from the end of the road for his side.

“No I don’t think Juve has reached the end of a cycle at all,” Allegri said. “Buffon will still be goalie next season and Barzagli with be with us for another year.

CARDIFF — After another potent demonstration of Cristiano Ronaldo’s enduring scoring prowess, surely no Real Madrid fan can contemplate criticizing him now. Particularly after the world player of the year ensured Madrid pulled off one of soccer’s hardest feats, becoming the first team to successfully defend their Champions League title. The fans who irritated Ronaldo so much ahead of Saturday’s final due to their whistling were silenced in emphatic style with two goals in a 4-1 victory over Juventus that gave Madrid a record-extending 12th European crown.

“People don’t have words to criticize,” Ronaldo said, “because the numbers don’t lie.” They certainly don’t after another incredible season, even at the age of 32. “My age is just a number,” Ronaldo said. “I feel like a young boy.”

At the end of the 25th season of the Champions League, Ronaldo is the first player to score in three of the competition’s finals. And having lifted the European Cup once with Manchester United, Ronaldo has done it three times in four seasons with Madrid.

It’s the latest piece of silverware in an incredible 12 months for the forward.

It began with Ronaldo winning his first title with Portugal at the European Championship. Then came the Club World Cup with Real Madrid and the end of a five-year Spanish title drought before new highs were reached in the Champions League. His career goal tally in club and international soccer now stands at 600.

Ronaldo’s first strike at Millennium Stadium was canceled out by Mario Mandzukic’s exquisite 27th-minute hook shot. It was the only high point for Juventus on a night when the Italian champion was outclassed in its quest for a first European title in 21 years. Madrid’s supremacy was clear in the second half. After Casemiro put the Spanish champions back in front in the 61st, Ronaldo turned in the third at the near post inside three minutes, and Marco Asensio wrapped up the scoring in the 90th.

Juventus conceded more goals on the night than it had on the journey to the final, having let in only three in the previous 12 games. “In the second half Real Madrid pushed the accelerator,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said, “and we remained too static and sat back too long.” Madrid’s attacking brilliance proved too hard for Juventus to contain, giving Zinedine Zidane his second Champions League title in 18 months of top-flight management.

“Zidane believes in us a lot,” Ronaldo said. “He knows that we are a very good team and that is why we proved it in the second half.” Until now, no team since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, when the cup was only a knockout competition, had won back-to-back titles.

Madrid had a lot to thank Keylor Navas for in the opening minutes. The goalkeeper blocked a header and strike from Gonzalo Higuain, and produced a one-handed save when Miralem Pjanic picked a gap through a crowd of defenders. It was the culmination of a counterattack of breathtaking speed launched by Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Karim Benzema picked up possession and passed to Ronaldo. The world player of the year knocked the ball across to Dani Carvajal on the right flank before drifting into the penalty area to receive it back and beat Buffon. But within seven minutes, Ronaldo was shaking his head and scowling after seeing an equalizer of individual brilliance.

Leonardo Bonucci’s deep ball was brought down by Alex Sandro, who cut it back to Higuain in the penalty area. With his back to goal, Mandzukic received the chipped pass from Higuain and used his chest to control the ball before hooking it over his shoulder into the far top corner. The magnificence evoked memories of another showpiece staged in the U.K. in 2002 when Zidane volleyed into the top corner in Glasgow to help Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen.

This time, Zidane was a spectator on the Madrid sidelines, but enjoying it just as much. His team’s domination was verified after the break when Madrid went back in front - through Casemiro’s strike that deflected off Sami Khedira - and this time the lead was retained.

It owed much to Madrid controlling midfield, largely thanks to Modric, who set up Ronaldo’s second. The Croatian timed his cutback to perfection in the 64th to allow Ronaldo to ghost in between Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini and slot in at the near post.

Juve’s night took a turn for the worse when Juan Cuadrado was dismissed for a second booking in the 84th. And to compound their misery, Asensio beat Buffon again as the 39-year-old goalkeeper missed out on a first European title. “(Madrid) showed their class and the attitude needed to play in this kind of game,” Buffon said after losing a third final. We were powerless to resist Real firepower, says Allegri

CARDIFF - Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri said even his side’s rock-like defence was powerless to resist Real Madrid’s firepower as the Italian club’s hopes of a first Champions League triumph in 21 years ended in heartache on Saturday. The Italian champions’ defensive wall had been almost impregnable all season in Europe but was reduced to rubble as Real roared to victory with three goals after the break.

“In the first half we played beautifully but they pushed the accelerator in the second half and we could not resist,” Allegri, whose side had been bidding to become the eighth club to land the “treble” having won Serie A and the Copa Italia this year, told reporters. Juventus leaked three goals in 12 games en route to the final, twice shutting out Barcelona’s feared attack in the quarter-finals before blunting a free-scoring Monaco strike force in the semis.

But the granite-like trio of Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci cracked after Juventus had been the better side in a first half that ended 1-1. “The two goals in quick succession hurt us and we were not able to react,” Allegri said.

With keeper Gianluigi Buffon close to 40, Barzagli 36 and Chiellini and Bonucci the wrong side of 30, it is tempting to suggest that Juve’s rearguard will soon need rebuilding. Allegri, however, said the crushing defeat was far from the end of the road for his side.

“No I don’t think Juve has reached the end of a cycle at all,” Allegri said. “Buffon will still be goalie next season and Barzagli with be with us for another year.

Thai Ariya to replace Ko as world number one

NEW JERSEY - Ariya Jutanugarn will replace Lydia Ko as the top ranked player in women’s golf after her rival for number one spot, South Korea’s Ryu So-yeon, missed the cut at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in New Jersey on Saturday.

Ko, who has held top spot for 84 weeks, is not playing in the event and was certain to relinquish her crown to either Ariya, another absentee in

Golden State among best teams I’ve seen, says LeBron

CLEVELAND - Cleveland forward LeBron James said the top-seeded Golden State Warriors are among the best teams he has seen but is confident his Cavaliers can avenge their blowout loss in Game One when the teams meet again on Sunday.

James had 28 points and 15 rebounds in the Finals opener but also turned the ball over eight times, costly errors that helped pave the way to a 113-91 Warriors win.

“I’ve seen a lot of great teams, and they rank right up there. They work well together,” he told reporters on Saturday during practice in Oakland.

“They have some guys that can actually lead a franchise without anybody else by themselves,” he said of the Warriors, who have four All Stars and posted the NBA’s best record this season.

The Warriors are an NBA record 13-0 in this year’s playoffs, and their undefeated record will not be broken on Sunday unless Cleveland takes better care of the ball, James said.

“Turning the ball over, that’s one thing we did in Game One that we’re going to be very conscious about going into Game Two, especially on their home floor,” he said.

Turnovers are particularly costly against a Golden State team that thrives in transition basketball, either finding one of their sharp-shooting guards for a three-pointer or driving to the basket for an easy lay-up or dunk.

“Game One was the feel-out for us, and they definitely took advantage of all our miscues. We just have to get better,” James said.

After their defense looked unable to stop Warriors forward Kevin Durant from driving to the basket in Game One, James said the Cavaliers could be more physical in Game Two. “That’s always been something that we talk about, so we look forward to seeing what we can bring to the game in Game Two,” he said. France, India to cooperate in fighting climate change

PARIS - French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday their countries would cooperate in the fight against climate change, just days after the U.S. withdrew from the Paris climate agreement.

Modi, whose country is the world’s third-biggest emissions generator, said in Russia on Friday that he would continue to back the deal and Macron has said the 2015 Paris agreement is irreversible despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw.

“The protection of the environment and the mother planet is an article of faith,” Modi said at a joint news conference with Macron in Paris.

The two leaders, who met for the first time, announced no contracts or new initiatives.

“We are both convinced that our countries have to do a lot for the ecological and environmental transition and the fight against global warming,” Macron said, adding that France would go above and beyond its Paris agreement commitments.

He said he planned a visit to India before year-end for a first summit of the International Solar Alliance, an initiative launched by New Delhi and Paris during the Paris climate talks.

Macron said the alliance will lead to concrete measures in favour of solar energy and commit the companies of both nations.

The alliance seeks to mobilise more than a trillion dollars by 2030 and bring together well over 100 solar-rich countries to deliver solar energy to some of the planet’s poorest.

Deadly blasts hit funeral mourners after protests in Afghan capital

KABUL - A series of blasts in Kabul on Saturday killed at least six people at a funeral for one of the victims of clashes between police and protesters a day before.

The explosions continued a wave of violence in the capital since a devastating truck bomb on Wednesday and prompted a renewed appeal for calm from the United Nations special envoy to Afghanistan.

Authorities had blocked the streets of Kabul in a bid to prevent a repeat of the bloody confrontation between protesters and police on Friday.

UN envoy Tadamichi Yamamoto issued a statement calling for “urgent measures to halt the cycle of violence”.

“Calm is now called for. Ensuring security in Kabul is an urgent priority, as this city continues to experience the highest number of civilian casualties,” he said.

The violence, fuelled by public anger over the inability of President Ashraf Ghani’s divided government to ensure security in Kabul, has exacerbated political tensions between rival factions, and Ghani issued a call for unity.

It further complicates the situation confronting U.S. and coalition officials as they work on plans expected to see an increase of between 3,000 and 5,000 in the number of foreign troops in Afghanistan.

“The country is under attack,” Ghani said in a message on Twitter.

“We must be strong and united.”

The interior ministry said there were six dead and 87 wounded from Saturday’s blasts.

Kabul’s Italian-run Emergency Hospital, which has handled a stream of trauma injuries over the past few days, said it had treated 20 wounded brought in to the hospital.

Earlier it said that 19 people had been reported killed but later confirmed it had been referring to media reports and said there were no dead at the hospital. Eyewitnesses at the funeral said that they had seen at least 12 dead.

Government Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah was at the funeral but was unharmed, while survivors said a series of explosions had ripped through the crowd, most of whom appeared to be linked to Abdullah’s mainly Tajik Jamiat-e-Islami party.

“There were sounds of explosions everywhere and I saw my hands and face were on fire,” said Mohammad Azim, who was being treated for burns at the Emergency Hospital.

“There were parts of human bodies everywhere.”

One of the most bloody weeks in Kabul for months began with the devastating truck bomb attack in the city’s diplomatic zone on Wednesday morning which killed more than 80 people and wounded more than 460.

woman being stabbed by three men at the south end of London Bridge as the assault developed. He said he threw chairs, glasses and bottles at the attackers in a bid to stop them.

Indonesia, Philippines front wider effort against militants

SINGAPORE — Joint patrols by three Southeast Asian countries in the Sulu Sea may be the start of a larger regional effort to keep Islamic militants at bay, officials said Sunday. The patrols will be conducted by forces from Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, starting with sea operations from June, with air and land patrols starting at a later date. The initiative in the Sulu Sea, an area bounded by the Malaysian state of Sabah and the southern Philippines, is a “collective agreement that is followed by the operational level,” Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said. It will feature joint command posts and exercises between the trio’s ground forces.

Joint patrols are an attempt “to prevent and protect our border, to close the border so that militants don’t go to other areas,” Ryamizard said. “If the situation escalates and extends to other waters, we would like to request other countries to join.”

Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population. Ryamizard was speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a security conference in Singapore attended by defense ministers and experts from 39 countries.

The presence of Islamic militants has been felt the region. Philippine troops are struggling to end a bloody siege by 500 Islamic State group-aligned extremists in the southern city of Marawi, one of the boldest militant attacks in Southeast Asia in years.

Jr., Undersecretary for Defense Policy at the Philippine Department of National Defense. “They have a back channels corridor in our country, probably in the area of Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea, that they can proceed to Mindanao and link with the terrorist units in the area,” he said.

The joint patrols are not conducted under the umbrella of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia are part. “ASEAN is not a military bloc.

It is a defense corporation. If there are any issues, we have to find commonalities” out of the organization, Ryamizard said. Still, the objectives are aligned. “The very threat we face is a common enemy. Terrorists are the enemy. Especially in ASEAN, we don’t have any differences. I believe this can be a framework for other countries like the Middle East,” he added.

Singapore Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen said that he has offered assistance, in the form of an information-sharing center at Changi Naval Base. China has been asked to contribute its ships. Responding to a question from a member of the Chinese delegation, Ryamizard said: “It is like peace patrols. It is very important to underline that it is joint peace patrols.”

The inclusion of China is sensitive as the country has pitted itself against smaller Southeast Asian neighbors in claiming disputed islands, coral reefs and lagoons in the South China Sea. The three-day security conference, which ends Sunday, also focused on the nuclear ambitions of North Korea. (ap)

“LOST DECADE” In what has become an annual ritual, liberal businesspeople and economists used the St Petersburg event, Russia’s main showcase for foreign investors, as an opportunity to press the case for urgent reforms.

“Between 2008 and 2017, 10 years, the average economic growth rate was 1 percent. That’s a lost decade. The reasons are the failure to conduct reforms and the state takeover of the economy,” said Alexei Kudrin, a former finance minister.

The liberal camp’s main prescriptions for the economy involve a privatisation programme to shrink the state’s role, decisive steps to rein in law enforcement agencies that they say harass businesses, and guarantees that bureaucrats will not steal businesses from their owners.

This camp has some influence.

The rivalry between those groups has intensified because the policy direction for the next presidential term is being defined in the next few months, and both sides want to put their stamp on it.

“We can live without reforms, and in previous years that’s essentially what happened,” said Andrei Sharonov, dean of the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo.

“The question is, how long can we live without reforms, and how high will be the price that we’ll have to pay for that?”(rtr)

CHICAGO — An Illinois man who typed out emoji and other text messages to advise his cousin thousands of miles away on how to kill a wealthy Chicago woman vacationing in Indonesia was sentenced on Friday to nine years in prison. At Robert Bibbs’ sentencing in Chicago federal court, a prosecutor placed the fruit-stand handle used to bludgeon Sheila von Wiese-Mack at a Bali beach resort by the judge’s bench. Relatives cried later as prosecutors displayed a photograph of the 62-year-old’s body in a suitcase, where her killers stuffed the body.

Bibbs, 26, of Chicago, told Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer he’d been depressed in 2014 when his cousin Tommy Schaefer sought guidance on how he and his girlfriend, Heather Mack — Wiese-Mack’s daughter — should commit the murder. For his help, Bibbs hoped for a cut of the mom’s inheritance. “To this day, I don’t recognize the person in those messages,” he said about his texts, standing in court shackled at the ankles. And he added: “I never expected them to do something so horrific.” Judge Pallmeyer scolded Bibbs for describing his advisory role as “a mistake.” “A mistake is leaving your keys in the car,” she told him. “A mistake is not standing by and encouraging an unjustified murder.”

Autopsy photos showed to the judge showed Wiese-Mack’s body with deep gashes across her face and wounds on her arms that prosecutors say resulted from her desperate bid to fend off the blows. Within minutes of his cousin texting on Aug. 12, 2014, that the murder was done, Pallmeyer also noted that the

men traded casual messages about NBA basketball news.

One of Bibbs’ texts incorporated a “high-five” emoji to indicate he approved of their bid to kill Wiese-Mack, who was a widow of highly regarded jazz and classical composer James L. Mack, who died in 2006. Another time, Bibbs said Schaefer could smother WieseMack, texting: “Go sit on her face wit a pillow.” Bibbs pleaded guilty in December to conspiracy to commit foreign murder of a U.S. citizen, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years. But Bibbs lack of a previous criminal record and other factors meant he wouldn’t face the maximum penalty. Prosecutors had asked for up to 11 years.

Indonesian authorities arrested Schaefer, now 24, and Mack, 21, after the bloodied suitcase was found in a taxi. In 2015, a court in Indonesia sentenced Schaefer to 18 years in prison for the murder; Mack received a 10-year term for helping. Wiese-Mack’s youngster sister, Debbi Curran, also spoke at Bibbs’ sentencing. She described how she had searched the internet the day she learned of her sister’s death in Bali — only to see a crime photo online of the suitcase that still contained her sister’s body.

“I can’t look at a suitcase (now) without thinking of my sister’s half-naked body ... in a suitcase,” she said. “This will haunt me for the rest of my life.” Bill Wiese told the court about his sister’s love of classical music and opera, and how she supported the arts, including by opening her home to aspiring musicians. “I only wish I could have protected her from this brutal murder,” he said.(ap)

Deputy regent criticizes garbage at Gilimanuk Bay NEGARA — The arrangement of Gilimanuk Bay area as a tourist destination becomes a priority this year. Gilimanuk is considered strategic because its position as the main entrance to Bali Island and supported by the natural coastal beauty of Gilimanuk Bay. This arrangement is also required to change the ambience of Gilimanuk showing the characteristics of Bali.

Deputy Regent of Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan, led in person on Friday (Jun 2) the direct preparation of development as well as site inspection. He said there are a number of arrangements denoting the measures of the government of Jembrana to conjure up Gilimanuk into a better tourist destination offering the ambience of Bali. One of them is at Gilimanuk Bay with the arrangement of parking lot and merchants. He criticized the management of the Gilimanuk Bay area.

After the construction of Shiva Statue Park, he wanted to complete the facility of the area located adjacent with the Gilimanuk Museum by arranging the area of merchant and fence with planter box, lights along the area, toilet facilities, changing rooms and a water tower.

In the future, he hoped the management of Gilimanuk Bay under the local tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) can be maximized by more tightly handling the garbage problem as well as the hawkers who are still selling outside.

“It needs a synergistic measure between local government and the surrounding communities.

Preparedness of the surrounding communities is needed to welcome tourism by maintaining sanitation, public facilities and firm regulation to selling merchants. Otherwise, what the local government has done will be in vain,” he said.

He also invited relevant agencies such as tourism and culture office as well as public works and environment agency of Jembrana. Such

site inspection was also attended by the Head of Bappeda’s Research and Development I Ketut Swijana, Head of Public Works and Spatial Planning I Wayan Darwin, Head of Environment Agency I Ketut Kariadi Erawan, Head of Tourism Office I Wayan Wenten as well as subdistrict head of Melaya I Wayan Andi Anjasmara.

As planned, in 2017 a total of three projects sourced from hotel and restaurant tax funds of Badung district worth IDR 10 billion are ready to be worked on. They consist of the arrangement of parking area, merchants and procurement of facilities for Gilimanuk Bay area by tourism and culture office with a budget of IDR 1 billion, the arrangement of former Gilimanuk Terminal into a culinary center by public works worth IDR 6 billion as well as the arrangement of entrance split gates to the Island of Bali with the making of park, statues and roadside garden worth IDR 1.5 billion under the environment agency.

The remaining fund worth IDR 1.5 billion will be used to arrange the area of Bunut Bolong located in the subdistrict of Pekutatan.

He considered the Gilimanuk area to have strategic prospect because it is rich in tourism potential and located along the national road as the access to the harbor. He wanted the Gilimanuk area being famous for its culinary tourism can be well arranged so it can draw more visitors. Formerly, private cars could enter freely to the front courtyard of the stalls, now everything will be concentrated in a special parking lot arranged in front of the national road. Visitors just need a short walk to enjoy the culinary center.

“We will prepare a larger parking area equipped with toilet so that it can accommodate buses of guests in group. Therefore, the front courtyard needs to be arranged with a clear and striking signpost, so that it can attract passing visitors to taste the famous chicken betutu cuisine,” he said. (kmb26)

Dozens of residents of Songan Hill rushed to hospital

BANGLI — Dozens of residents at some hamlets in the area behind the Songan Hill, Kintamani, experienced symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting accompanied by diarrhea. Allegedly the residents suffered food poisoning from fermented cassava purchased at a local stall. Until Saturday (Jun 3), there were at least 12 out of 27 residents becoming the poisoning victims that were still undergoing treatment at Kintamani health center V, clinic and Pratama Hospital in Karangasem.

As information compiled, the 27 people suffering from poisoning are from six hamlets namely Bukit Tungtung (14 persons), Kendal (1 person), Munduk Lantang (1 person), Bantas (2 persons), Kayu Selem (8 persons) and Balingkang (1 person).

They experienced the symptoms of poisoning such as abdominal pain, vomiting, dizziness and diarrhea on Thursday morning (Jun 1). Since the condition was quite alarming, on Thursday morning the 27 residents were rushed to get medical treatment by their families.

Of the 27 poisoning victims, they were mostly treated at Pratama Hospital at West Tianyar village, Kubu, Karangasem. In the meantime, some others were treated at Galang Kangin clinic Karangasem and Kintamani health center V at Songan village.

Hamlet chief of Kayuselem, Songan B, I Komang Catur Yasa, when asked for his confirmation,

said the 27 people had symptoms of food poisoning after consuming fermented cassava on Wednesday afternoon (May 31). They purchased it from a stall belonging to Ni Kari, a resident at Kayuselem.

“Ni Kari who makes this fermented cassava was also rushed to hospital because she is experiencing the same symptoms,” he explained.

Catur Yasa claimed not to know exactly what made the fermented cassava of Ni Kari poisonous. To know the exact cause, he claimed to have directly coordinated with the health authority. “We have coordinated with Kintamani public health center V and forward it to health agency. Yesterday there were some health workers coming here to take samples of the fermented cassava and water. The results have not been submitted yet,” he said.

In addition to health workers, the health officials were also admitted to have come down to location to

check. He added that some of the 27 residents rushed to hospital have been allowed to go home. Until Saturday afternoon, he got information there were ten residents remaining to be treated at Pratama Hospital, Karangasem, a resident at Galang Kangin clinic and another resident at Kintamani public health center.

In the meantime, subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, when asked for his confirmation separately also admitted that dozens of residents in the hilly areas experienced the symptoms of poisoning and they were rushed to hospital and public health center to get immediate help and some of them have been allowed to go home. A number of residents rushed their poisoned family member to Pratama Hospital in Kubu, Karangasem, because the road access to Bangli region is badly damaged and not passable by cars. (kmb40)

Unsure of U.S., Asia builds new alliances to counter China

SINGAPORE - Several Asian nations are seeking to bolster informal alliances among themselves, regional diplomats and officials said, unsettled by growing fears that the United States could not be relied on to maintain a buffer against China’s assertiveness.

Countries including Australia, Japan, India and Vietnam are quietly stepping up discussions and cooperation, although taking care they do not upset Beijing, the diplomats said. No one was yet talking about a formal alliance. Inaugurating the weekend Shangri-La Dialogue, the region’s premier security forum,

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said: “In this brave new world we cannot rely on great powers to safeguard our interests.

“We have to take responsibility for our own security and prosperity, while recognising we are stronger when sharing the burden of collective leadership with trusted partners

and friends.”

His comments resonated through the three-day meeting that ended on Sunday. Regional officials and analysts said there was growing mistrust of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, especially because of his withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on trade and then, last week, the pullout from the Paris climate accord.

Many fear Trump is signalling a deeper retreat from a traditional U.S. security role that has underpinned the region for decades.

U.S. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis told the Singapore forum that Washington remained committed to the region and insisted it would oppose China’s militarisation of the disputed South China Sea, one of Asia’s most volatile hotspots.

Regional officials said they were worried by Trump’s unpredictability and concerned that his warm praise of Chinese President Xi Jinping after their first summit meeting in April would influence any decisions on Asia.

“We trust Mattis and we trust (U.S. Pacific Commander Harry)

Harris but at the very top? The trust gap is very wide,” said one senior Asian military officer.

“Our fear is driven by the reality that it is only the U.S. that is powerful enough to set red lines with China.”

Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Asia was still trying to figure out Trump’s policy in the region.

Residents trapped as gunfire mars ceasefire at Philippines city

MARAWI CITY - Thousands of civilians hoping to flee fighting in the besieged Philippines city of Marawi remained trapped on Sunday after a four-hour ceasefire to evacuate residents was marred by gunfire.

Only 134 were freed on Sunday, less than on previous days, despite government hopes that more than 1,000 would be able to leave a city battered by 13 days of intense fighting.

Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte predicted the siege would be over within days despite fierce resistance by fighters aligned to Islamic State in the dense urban heart of the southern Philippines city.

“This will be over in about three more days,” Duterte said on Saturday after visiting a hospital in Cagayan de Oro where wounded soldiers were being treated.

“I will not hesitate to use every power available.”

About 400 local militants rein-

forced by about 40 foreign fighters stormed Marawi on May 23, using sophisticated battlefield tactics to take control of large swaths of the lakeside city.

They have been pushed back to the city centre by Philippines forces over the past week after some 4,000 ground troops were bolstered by helicopters and aircraft deploying rockets and bombs.

Many residents have told Reuters that the airstrikes caused extensive property damage and dozens of civilian deaths. Authorities lifted the civilian death toll from 20 to 38 on Sunday - but said all those deaths were caused by militants.

A presidential spokesman said 120 militants had died, along with 38 government forces.

Duterte said the use of air power had been restrained so far.

“I can end this war in 24 hours,” he said. “All I have to do is to bomb the whole place and level it to the

ground.”

Duterte has asked the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), an Islamic separatist movement based on the Philippines island of Mindanao, to help negotiate a peace settlement with the Islamist fighters, who are predominantly drawn from the Maute Group based in and around Marawi.

Marawi, dubbed the “Islamic City of Marawi”, is also located on Mindanao, which has a large Muslim population in a predominantly Catholic country and been destabilised by separatist insurgencies for decades.

MILF cadres organised Sunday’s ceasefire, which was to run from 8 am until noon. They roamed the streets with loud hailers urging residents to leave.

But by 9am, gunfire had broken out, apparently deterring residents from joining a mass exodus.

Marawi City’s mayor Majul Gandamra, told reporters on Sunday

morning he was expecting “more or less 1,000 plus to be rescued today”.

In the end, 134 were evacuated, less

Carnival of Cultures

BERLIN - Since 1966, the Carnival of Cultures has been celebrated every year on Pentecost weekend in Kreuzberg, Berlin: opulent costumes, powerful makeup, imaginative masks, and decorated hand carts make their way through the streets demonstrating the cultural diversity of Berlin. Over the four-day street festival, there are culinary delicacies and all sorts of items from all over the world on offer.

During the Carnival of Cultures, a colourful hustle and bustle is prominent on Blücherplatz: over the multi-day street festival, there are culinary delicacies and all sorts of items from all over the world.

From fresh coconuts and sweet potatoes to eccentric accessories, to clothing and hand-made crafts, there is something for every taste at almost 400 stands. On the many stages, you can also hear music from various regions around the world.

The highlight of the Carnival of Cultures is the street procession on Pentecost Sunday (mid-May to mid-June) with around 4,700

participants from 80 countries who boldly celebrate the cultural diversity of Berlin with traditional costumes and ritual dances. The caravans begin at noon on Hermannplatz and continue until evening across Hasenheide and Yorckstraße to Möckernstraße. The participating groups represent the cultural diversity of Berlin and are impressive with their elaborate costumes and rehearsed dances. The most original and fantastical performances are awarded by judges.

Around one million people attend the Carnival of Cultures every year, thus making the street festival one of Berlin’s largest open air events. Along with the carnival, there are also numerous parties and music events as well as a comprehensive programme for children.

The idea for this event came from the workshop of the cultures, which was launched in the multination district Kreuzberg in 1993.

The carnival was to be used as an demonstration of peace and colour, the idea of a tolerant and open society. It began in 1996 with 2,000 participants and 50,000 visi-

tors, and soon developed into one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. Nowadays more than 4,000 participants and far more than a million visitors attend the spectacle. Since 2000 the most beautiful displays and costumes are awarded. In addition to the carnival parade through Kreuzberg, a festival on the Bluecherplatz with music from around the world is an integral part of the Carnival of Cultures.

The Karneval der Kulturen will therefore take place for the 22nd time from June 2-5, and will reflect again on Berlin’s diversity, with people from more than 180 countries living in the German capital.

The highlight of the four-day

festival is the street parade through Berlin’s multicultural district, Kreuzberg, held on June 4. Over 60 participating groups, including samba dancers, drummers and stilt walkers, will be performing.

The street festival also boasts over 300 stands with food and art crafts from different cultures. Four stages will be welcoming numerous international bands and DJs. Eight additional “Music Corners”

will offer a stage for more intimate performances.

The fall of the Berlin Wall led to an increased internationalization of the city, but also to the emergence of stronger nationalist and racist movements in the 1990s. Reacting to this phenomenon, the City of Berlin launched the Karneval der Kulturen to celebrate its multiculturalism and tolerance - and keeps doing so to this day. (IBP/net)

Chairman of central executive of Hindu youth association (Peradah) of Jembrana, I Komang Kurniawan, strongly supported the introduction of this track in addition to developing regional tourism as well as appreciating the nature (environmental aspect). Not long ago, Peradah also introduced the track by inviting students and communities and the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Jembrana Chapter through Bunut Bolong forest tracking activity.

Ketut Naba, one of the local residents, said that the area has now been being arranged. Previously, the ficus tree tunnel passed through by asphalt road for one lane only was actually not perforated, according to local residents.

Then, during the Dutch colonial period the tall ficus tree was perforated. At that time, many residents have lived around Manggisari and the Dutch colonial built road access to facilitate the smooth transportation leading the plantations.

At that time, native residents were employed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to help open road access from plantation to nearest harbor. However, the project was hampered by large ficus tree at the temple location. They could not pass because on the left side there is a cliff and a temple in the north side. Finally, it was decided to perforate the ficus tree. At first glance, the hollow in the ficus tree looked small, but actually it can be crossed by a large truck.

In terms of spiritual perspective, the tunnel tree is not a tree but a red brick gate. It is just like split gates or apit lawang. Previously, it was flanked by rosewood in the right and left side of the tree. However, now only one tree remains.

It is said that if people would like to pass through the ficus tree tunnel, they must ask for permission whether they are pedestrians or vehicles. Not everyone can pass through the tunnel. Naba mentioned if there is an entourage of wedding or death person wishing to pass, it must cross the road next to ficus tree. (olo)

A robber especially targeting foreigners at villa arrested

DENPASAR — A robber especially targeting villas in Ubud with the initials AD, 39, was arrested by Section Head of Escort and Patrol, Sub-Directorate of General Assignment, Directorate of Public Services of Bali Police, I Dewa Nyoman Sudiarsa, at the boarding house on Jalan Gelogor Carik, Gang Selamet, last Wednesday (May 31). AD has long been a fugitive of Ubud police related to robbery cases against three foreigners at three villas.

by Sudiarsa, explained on Friday (Jun 2) that at 07:00 Local Time he was on duty of arranging traffic at the intersection of Jalan Pulau Galang at Gelogor Carik. At that time, a resident living at Taman Sari Residence Denpasar came and informed that the suspect AD stays at his boarding house.

“The resident said that formerly AD had been raided by mobile detective unit of Ubud police but managed to escape,” said Sudiarsa.

After getting the information, Sudiarsa directly came to the boarding

house. Arriving there, AD immediately escaped to an alley and was immediately chased. Eventually, AD could be arrested at a dead end alley.

“The suspect tried to jump over the wall at the end of the alley and but I immediately pulled his leg.

So, it immediately made him not move,” he said.

In the meantime, Hengky Widjaja added that based on interrogation results, AD admitted to be from Kampung Buyang, Makassar, and a recidivist. In his action, AD claimed to damage the door

or window of the targeted villas.

Furthermore, he brought along the valuables belonging to the foreign tourists living at the villa.

“Further, we make coordination with chief of Ubud police criminal investigation unit. The suspect AD was immediately taken to Ubud police station for further inspection process. I would like to thank the resident who has been willing to help police by providing information related to the existence of the perpetrator,” said Hengky Widjaja. (kmb36)

Airplane departures increases by 5.43 percent

DENPASAR - The number of international airplane departures from Ngurah Rai Airport in April 2017 reached 2,505 flight units. This number showed an increase of 5.43 percent compared to the previous month reaching 2,376 units. Such condition is in line with the number of international passenger flights in the same period, which increased by 8.67 percent, from 418,582 people in March 2017 to 454,882 people in April 2017.

It was revealed at the press conference of the central statistic agency (BPS) of Bali on Friday (Jun 2). Head of the BPS Bali, Adi Nugroho, said that in line with the airplane departure, the number of baggage and international air transport freight also increased by 10.72 percent, from 7.87 million tons to 8.71 million tons.

For domestic air transport, the number of aircraft departing from Ngurah Rai Airport in April 2017 amounted to 3,298 flight units, an increase of 1.10 percent compared to the previous month reaching 3,262 flight units.

This condition is not different from the number of passengers amounting to 421,255 people, or an increase of 11.29 percent compared to the previous month reaching 378,507 people. It is also in line with the number of baggage and freight increasing by 30.77 percent from 4.06 million tons in March 2017 to 5.31

million tons in April 2017. The number of baggage and air freight in international flight also increased by 10.72 percent, from 7.87 million tons to 8.71 million tons. Five countries becoming the main destinations for international airplane departure in April 2017 are Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong.

Compared to the previous month, out of the five countries, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and China respectively showed an increase of 9.47 percent, 1.53 percent, 19.17 percent and 5.79 percent. Hong Kong decreased by 6.20 percent. In the meantime, the destination of departing passengers covered five countries namely Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong where all increased respectively by 10.47 percent, 6.70 percent, 15.20 percent, 11.18 percent and 5.78 percent. The increase in the number of aircraft and the number of passengers is alleged to have been caused by long weekend holiday on April 14-16 and April 22-24, 2017.

Furthermore, when compared to April 2016, from the five destination countries there were two destination countries experiencing a decrease in the number of aircraft flight namely Australia and Hong Kong respectively amounting to 4.03 percent, and 17.49 percent.

Then, for destination countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and China, there was an increase in the number of departing passengers respectively amounting to 21.15 percent, 36.84 percent, and 83.57 percent. (kmb42)

SINGARAJA - Tectonic earthquakes remain to frequently shake the area of Tejakula village. This causes local residents restless.

Besides, some residents are also worried about the damage to their buildings. Headman of Tejakula, Ketut Suardana, revealed that since a few days ago the earthquake has often hit his territory. The last one took place on Thursday (Jun 1) around 21:22 with the magnitude of below 3 on Richter scale. “Yesterday another earthquake occurred, but was not so strong,” he said on Friday (Jun 2).

Although relatively being small, the natural phenomenon has caused many residents to be restless, especially when the earthquake took place at night. All residents directly went out to find a safer place. “Our residents are quite uneasy if an earthquake occurs.

Surely they will flow out, while the quake leaves no damaged,” he said.

LOS ANGELES - Comedian Kathy Griffin tearfully apologized in a Friday press conference for posing with a fake bloodied and severed head depicting U.S. President Donald Trump, saying that she felt her career was now over and that Trump “broke” her.

Griffin has lost sponsorships and jobs, including her role as co-host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage with journalist Anderson Cooper, since a photograph and video from the shoot appeared on social media on Tuesday.

President Trump said the image of Griffin with the gory mask resembling him was “sick” and that it had traumatized his family, especially his youngest son, 11-year-old Barron.

Trump’s oldest son, Donald Jr., called for employers to drop the comedian.

“I don’t think I will have a career after this. I’m going to be honest, (Trump) broke me,” said Griffin, 56, a two-time Emmy-winning performer known for her deliberately provocative brand of humor. She added that she had received death threats.

Griffin reiterated the apology she posted on social media late on Tuesday, but remained defiant, saying, “I’m not afraid of Donald Trump, he’s a bully,” adding that she intended

to continue making jokes about the president.

She also described herself as a provocative woman who has often had to deal with older white men in positions of power.

“What’s happening to me has never happened ever, in the history of this great country, which is that a sitting president of the United States and his grown children and the first lady are personally, I feel, trying to ruin my life - forever,” she said.

Griffin said the photo was intended to mock Trump’s comments during the presidential campaign, when he told CNN that Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly had “blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her - wherever” when she moderated a 2015 presidential debate.

Trump’s remark was widely interpreted as referring to menstrual blood, implying that Kelly was in an unfriendly mood because she was menstruating. (rtr)

U.S. singer Grande delights fans with UK hospital visit LONDON - U.S. pop singer Ariana Grande has paid a surprise visit to young fans who were injured in a suicide attack on a concert she gave in Manchester last month, posing with them for selfies and signing t-shirts. Grande returned to Britain on Friday to lead an all-star benefit concert on Sunday and quickly headed for a hospital in the northern English city where many of the injured are being treated.

The “One Love Manchester” concert will also feature Coldplay, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Take That and the Black Eyed Peas.

It will take place at the Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Fans who attended Grande’s show that was targeted by the bomber are being offered free tickets to the concert which will be broadcast on British television. UK leader: Islamic extremism must be contained after attack

LONDON — Prime Minister Theresa May Sunday called for tougher measures to fight Islamic extremism after attackers using a vehicle and knives killed seven people in a busy area of London and disrupted Britain’s election campaign just days before a nationwide vote. The assault unfolded — and ended — quickly, with police fatally shooting the three attackers within eight minutes. But the men had achieved their apparent goal of turning a balmy summer night in Britain’s capital into a scene of carnage.

It began Saturday night when a van veered off the road and barreled into pedestrians on busy London Bridge.

The three men fled the van with large knives and attacked people at bars and restaurants in nearby Borough Market, police and witnesses said.

Police said counter-terrorism officers raided several addresses in Barking,

an east London suburb, and arrested 12 people there Sunday morning in connection with the attack.

Emergency officials said 48 people, including a transport police officer and an off-duty officer, were treated at hospitals across London. Some suffered life-threatening injuries.
