Stoner admits he chose wrong tyre Casey Stoner admitted he could not make the hard Bridgestone tyre work in race conditions after finishing a disappointed fourth in the Catalunya Grand Prix. The result was the first time since Jerez in early 2011 - when Stoner was taken out by Valentino Rossi - that the Honda rider had not been on the podium. Stoner started from pole position, but fell back immediately in the race, running as low as sixth for a spell, before recovering to push Tech 3 Yamaha’s Andrea Dovizioso for third. While his team-mate Dani Pedrosa finished second with the same choice of hard tyres, Stoner felt his rubber option cost him too much ground early on. “I’m a little disappointed, we gave it everything at the end but we just didn’t have the pace, especially in the beginning with the hard tyre,” said Stoner. “It seemed that only Dani could really make that tyre work today and he made it work better than us.”

The Australian said he had been concerned that wear would be too high on the soft tyre, which Jorge Lorenzo used on his way to victory, and that the hard would allow him to be stronger in the closing stages. “With the performance we had during the weekend we expected to be a little stronger throughout the race,” Stoner said. “We knew the beginning was going to be tough but we believed that towards the end we would be able to run a higher pace. “We weren’t sure if the softer tyre was going to be a problem for us in the race so we took the safer option today. We thought we had a better bike and better pace, but it didn’t come together. “Still we came home with some points and we have the test here tomorrow to work on the chatter issues so I’m sure we’ll be back fighting at the top again soon.” The Catalunya result leaves Stoner 20 points behind leader Lorenzo in the MotoGP championship standings.

Yamaha man Lorenzo ultimately made a late break from Pedrosa to take victory with a five-second cushion. In the early laps he had run third as his team-mate Ben Spies attacked Pedrosa, before the American made a mistake and fell to last place. “It was a very complicated situation because I didn’t want to do any stupidity trying to overtake Ben and Dani at the

limit, so I waited for my opportunity,” said Lorenzo. “Ben went wide and I went into second place. For me this was a good position so I waited a little bit to see how Dani was able to keep his pace. I made a mistake and he went, but I was able to recover all the distance, and in five or six laps I saw Dani slow the pace down a little bit. “I thought to wait a little bit to see what

was going on, because it was very easy to crash - he brakes very late in most of the braking zones so it was very difficult to overtake him and not touch him. “So I waited for a mistake, and it arrived. When I saw Dani go wide, I thought ‘OK, my opportunity’. I overtook him and I thought ‘if I push at the limit for two or three laps, I can open a gap’, because Dani was a little uncomfortable. And that was what happened.” Lorenzo has now taken victory in three of the five MotoGP races held so far in 2012, and finished second in the other two, giving him a 20-point lead over nearest rival Casey Stoner. Nigeria mourns after plane crash kills over 150

Agence France-Presse

LAGOS - Nigeria began three days of mourning on Monday after a plane carrying 153 people plunged into a residential area of Nigeria’s largest city of Lagos on Sunday, with all those aboard presumed dead. The plane, which was flying to Lagos from the capital Abuja, crashed near the airport, damaging buildings and setting off an inferno in the poor and densely populated neighbourhood. Several people were believed to have been killed on the ground, an emergency official said, while 10 burnt bodies were removed from a damaged building in the area, which was littered with plane debris including a broken wing. President Goodluck Jonathan declared three days of national mourning and pledged a full investigation into Sunday afternoon’s disaster involving a plane operated by domestic carrier Dana Air. Chaos broke out after the crash, with

rescue workers facing large crowds and aggressive soldiers while trying to access smoldering wreckage in the hunt for survivors. The cause of the crash of the Boeing MD83 was unclear, but the emergency official as well as an aviation official said the cockpit recorder had been located and handed over to police. Skies were cloudy at the time of the crash, but there had been no rain. Nigeria has a spotty aviation record, although Dana had been considered to be a relatively safe and reasonably efficient domestic airline since it began operating in 2008. Continued on page 6
