Ryan Adams tour in UK, Ireland cancelled after abuse claims LONDON - Ryan Adams’ tour of Britain and Ireland has been cancelled, ticket retailer Ticketmaster said Friday, following accusations of abuse against the US alternative singer-songwriter.

Adams has been accused by several women of emotional abuse and exploiting his position as a career mentor as a means to obtain sex. Ten concerts have been scrapped. The BBC reported that several fans had sought refunds on their tickets following the allegations. “The Ryan Adams UK and Ireland tour has been cancelled,” Ticketmaster Ireland said on Twitter, adding that full refunds to people who bought tickets from authorised outlets would be processed by the end of the day on Monday. An expose in The New York Times published last month details a pattern of manipulative behaviour from the 44-yearold Grammy-nominated artist, including testimony from performer Mandy Moore, his ex-wife. JOHANNESBURG - When the Soweto Gospel Choir was named as winner of the Grammy for Best World Music Album, it earned the ensemble a place in the music history books. Announced by Questlove, drummer from the US hip hop band The Roots, the award sparked an explosion of excitement among the South African singers. “He was almost stuttering, like: ‘And the winner is Fr- Fr- Freedom, Sss- Soweto Gospel Choir,’ then we jumped up! Like he took long, man,” chuckled choirmaster Shimmy Jiyane.

“I screamed my lungs out,” admits choir member Mary Mulovhedzi. “Then the ululating came, the Sowetans (in us) just came out -we couldn’t hold back.” What earned them the award was their album “Freedom” -- a 12-track tribute to Nelson Mandela released to mark the 100th year of his birth. It was the choir’s third Grammy in its 17-year existence, adding to accolades which include an Emmy and a debut album called “Voices From Heaven” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s World Music Chart. “Freedom” gives a modern twist

to so-called struggle songs -- campaigning music rooted in South Africa’s apartheid past, when the black majority were subjugated by the white minority. “It’s a story in a way of what happened during those days,” bass singer Mulalo Mulovhedzi told AFP. DENPASAR — Previously, Chairman of the Land Transportation Organization (Organda) of Bali Chapter, Ketut Eddy Darma Putra, said there is an increase in the number of passengers occurred during the period of January to February 2019.

Allegedly this happens due to the increase in the airfare price whereas the period belongs to a low season, causing the number of passengers of the Organda members to decline. However, the decline in 2019 is not significant. In line with the condition, the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS) also conveyed a decrease in the number of air transport departures from Ngurah Rai Airport. Head of the BPS Bali, Adi Nugroho, revealed the number of aircraft departing from Ngurah Rai Airport in January 2019 amounted to 3,358 flights, down 12.39 percent compared to the previous month (mtm) reaching 3,833 flights. The number of passengers was recorded to reach 429,131 people or decreased by 9.83 percent compared to the previous month (mtm) amounting to 475,930 people. “The number of flight departures and domestic passengers in January 2019 decreased even though the international numbers were on the rise. Apparently, it can be concluded this is related to the high price of domestic airfares,” he said. The amount of baggage and goods also showed a decrease by 17.54 percent from 7.17 million tons in December 2018 to 5.91 million tons in January 2019 (mtm). In terms of yoy (January 2019 compared to January 2018), it also decreased by 8.90 percent, from 3,686 aircrafts to 3,358 aircrafts. The number of passengers also decreased as much as 4.58 percent from 449,722 people to 429,131 people. The highest decreasing number of the aircraft and passengers happened to the Labuan Bajo destination. Meanwhile, the number of departures by sea in yoy indicated an increase of 1.34 percent. The number of sea transport passengers departing through several harbors in Bali during January 2019 was recorded to reach 194,606 people. This number has decreased by 32.30 percent because in December 2018 there were 287,440 passengers. This was triggered by the decline in the number of passengers departing from Benoa Harbor, Denpasar up to -10.48 percent and other harbors by -39.38 percent. However, preparedness is needed, such as competent human resources and method to maintain the quality of fruits so that it remains well in the destina-

One of the mangosteen exporters from Tabanan, Jero Putu Tesan, stated some time ago the increase in tariff for shipping services by air will inevitably increase operating costs. On the other hand, as a mangosteen exporter, he must maintain the stability of the selling price of mangosteen to exporters in this case China so that it is not inferior to other exporting countries such as Thailand having the same harvest time as ours. Another constraint remaining a consideration is the direct shipping through seaport from Bali to China and must be shipped via port in Surabaya and Tanjung Periuk. “Even though we have prepared anticipation, we still hope the cargo rates by the airline are evaluated because it significantly burdens the exporters including farmers as producers,” he said. Oceans that are warming due to climate change yield fewer fish

FINDING the fish is going to get harder as climate change continues to heat up the world’s oceans. Increasing ocean temperatures over 80 years have reduced the sustainable catch of 124 fish and shellfish species — the amount that can be harvested without doing long-term damage to the populations — by a global average of 4.1 percent, a new study finds. Overfishing has exacerbated that decline, the researchers say. In some parts of the world, such as the heavily fished Sea of Japan, the decrease in sustainable catch is as high as 35 percent.

The study, in the March 1 Science, examined changes from 1930 to 2010 in 235 fish and shellfish populations scattered across 38 ocean regions. On average, Earth’s surface ocean temperatures have

increased by about half a degree Celsius in that time, although temperature changes vary from location to location. About 8 percent of the fish and shellfish populations studied

saw losses as a result of the ocean warming, while about 4 percent of the populations increased in that time. That’s because certain species, such as black sea bass along the northeastern U.S. coast, have thrived in the warmer waters. But with continued warming those gains are likely to evaporate, as even those fish reach their heat threshold, says Christopher Free, a quantita-

ting a kind of immune therapy called PD-1 blockade or checkpoint inhibition. Those who ate a high-fiber diet were five times as likely to have the therapy halt the growth of or shrink tumors as those on diets low in fiber, researchers reported February 27 in a news conference held by the Ameri-

can Association for Cancer Research. High-fiber diets seem to foster a more diverse collection of gut microbes, which is associated with better outcomes from PD-1 blockade therapy, said Christine Spencer, a research scientist at the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy in San Francisco. But probiotic supplements — pills or food supplements that are supposed to contain helpful bacteria — actually reduced the diversity of microbes in cancer patients’ guts, the researchers found. Only about 20 to 30 percent of cancer patients see their tumors stop growing or shrink with PD-1 blockade immunotherapy. Spencer and colleagues had previously determined that bacteria in the Ruminococcaceae family seem to improve responses to the treatment, but the researchers didn’t know why some people have more of those helpful bacteria than others. Diet is one way to change a person’s microbiome, the collection of bacteria, fungi and other microbes

that live on and in the body. So Spencer and colleagues at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston surveyed 113 people with melanoma about their diets, including use of probiotics, and collected fecal samples from each participant. The 46 patients who consumed the highest amount of fiber in their diets, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains, tended to have more of the bacteria associated with a response to the immune therapy, the team found. And, in fact, those patients tended to get a positive effect from the therapy. Participants who ate more processed meat and excess sugar had fewer of those bacteria, and their tumors were more likely to grow despite immune treatment. More than 40 percent of patients said they were taking probiotics. Those people had lower gut microbe diversity than people who didn’t take the supplements. “A lot of people have perceptions that probiotics will have health benefits, but that might not be the case for cancer patients,”

In the procession, the first litter carried the effigies of Catur Lawa consisting of Ida Bhatara Bagus Pande, Ratu Pasek, Ratu Bagus Penyarikan and Ratu Dukuh Segening. After that, it was followed by the other litters according to the order specified. “Before departing, we held notification ceremony at Padma Tiga of Besakih Temple in order that when performing melasti to Watu Klotok Beach all the pilgrims and those carrying the litters will not get hampered by any obstacles on the way to the beach. On the way to Watu Klotok, the procession really went in accordance with expectations. The journey of the deities are accompanied with various ritual paraphernalia like tetanguran tabor, umbul-umbul / lelontek, mamas, bandrangan, payung pagut, dwaja and pasepan,” he said, Widiartha added the melasti ceremony is meant to purify the existing sanctified effigies in a series of welcoming the peak of the Tawur Agung Panca Wali Krama on March 6. After they fell asleep, the pilgrims and carriers stayed up late at Puseh Tebola Temple. On Monday (Mar. 4) at around 05:00, the deities resume the journey to Besakih Temple through the Toya Sah route through the main gate. Next, the deities unwind at Pesimpangan Temple. From here, around at 11:00 the journey was continued to the Besakih Temple. “After that, the deities are welcomed grandiosely at ambal-ambal. Head of the Denpasar Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Bagus Mataram, said the joint decree contains eleven points related to the upcoming Nyepi implementation. One of the main points is prohibiting the use of firecrackers when parading the ogoh-ogoh. Similarly, the ogoh-ogoh should be in the forms of bhutakala (evil spirit), demon, puppet figure and their manifestation as well as does not contain political, pornographic and discriminative elements. The ogoh-ogoh does not use Styrofoam and other materials that are not eco-friendly. Ogoh-ogoh parade is performed in their respective

Meanwhile, the Denpasar Municipal Police have finalized preparations so that the Nyepi holy day celebration can run safely and peacefully, particularly at the night of Pengerupukan graced with the ogoh-ogoh parade. Peugeot plans US return 30 years after exit

Some 30 years after exiting the United States due to plunging sales, Peugeot is preparing a return to a market where it previously knew glory at the famed Indianapolis 500. PSA Group Chief Executive Carlos Tavares said this week that the Peugeot -- a brand known for its lion logo -- is the parent company’s pick for the US market. The company plans to sell Peugeot autos in the US by 2026 in line with a multi-step 10-year plan first announced in 2016. The comeback is being devised as PSA, which also sells cars under the Citroen and Opel brands, faces pressure from investors to diversify its revenues beyond Europe at a time when US sanctions have torpedoed ambitions in Iran and the Chinese auto market has slowed considerably. What kind of cars will be sold? What will be the silhouette? Will Peugeot work through existing dealerships, an expensive proposition in some key cities, or sell directly to customers and skip certain markets? Eurozone recession fears mount on manufacturing drop

LONDON - Worries are growing that the 19-country eurozone economy is heading toward a recession that could start undoing hard-earned improvements in the labor market. In a survey of manufacturers that is closely monitored by the European Central Bank in its interest rate deliberations, financial information company IHS Markit found that the sector is contracting for the first time since June 2013. Its so-called purchasing managers’ index — a broad gauge of activity in manufacturing released Friday — fell to 49.3 points in February from 50.5 the previous month. Anything below 50 indicates a contraction in activity. That’s a weak reading at a time of growing uncertainty about the progress of U.S-China trade talks, volatility in financial markets and Britain’s impending exit from the European Union. Growth has faded recently in the eurozone — in the final quarter of 2018, the bloc grew only 0.2 percent from the previous three-month period. The slowdown in manufacturing is a sign that global trade is on the wane amid a tariff war between the U.S. and China. Export-reliant Germany was at the forefront of the survey’s decline, with Italy disappointing as well. “Euro area manufacturing is in its deep-

est downturn for almost six years, with forward-looking indicators suggesting risks are tilted further to the downside as we move into spring,” said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at IHS Markit. “In addition to widespread trade war worries, often linked to U.S. tariffs, and concerns regarding the outlook for the global economy, companies report that heightened political uncertainty, including Brexit, is hitting demand.” Analysts warned that the hit to manufacturing could soon end a long-running drop in unemployment. Official figures released Friday show that unemployment across the single currency bloc is at its lowest rate since the global financial crisis. Eurostat said the jobless rate fell to 7.8 percent in January, unchanged from the December rate, which was downwardly revised from the previous 7.9 percent. The rate is the lowest since October 2008. The agency said 23,000 people left the ranks of the unemployed during the month, taking the

total down to 12.85 million. Separately, Eurostat found that inflation edged higher during February as a result of a slight pick-up in energy costs. Consumer prices rose 1.5 percent from the year before, against 1.4 percent in January. However, the core rate, which strips out volatile items such as energy, fell, to 1 percent from 1.1 percent. The fall in the core rate is likely to weigh on policymakers at the European Central Bank ahead of their next meeting Thursday. The bank, which aims for a headline inflation rate of just below 2 percent, is mulling when to start raising interest rates, having brought an end to its bond-buying stimulus. Its main rate stands at zero and many policymakers want to lift borrowing rates back to more normal levels when possible. “Today’s drop in core inflation adds to the ECB’s wall of worries of seeing near-term growth and inflation outlooks being weaker than expected, thus delaying monetary policy normalization and even possibly to require additional support,” said Daniela Ordonez, lead European economist at Oxford Economics. According to Nanak, the operation to put out the fire has been stopped but the joint team personnel are still readied in the location. Later, they opened up the land for settlement and paddy field. The

hamlet and subak was then called Penyaringan. Opening of the farmland was carried out around 1850 and I Made Loka alias Gurun Pon was appointed the leader known as Kelihan. Second Austrian cyclist admits to doping as scandal deepens

VIENNA - A second Austrian cyclist has admitted to doping after six athletes were arrested last week in a probe into an international doping ring, Austrian media reported Monday. Five skiers and another cyclist have already been held as part of investigation into an alleged doping ring based in Germany and led by a 40-year-old sports doctor named as ‘Mark S’. Cyclist Georg Preidler told the Kronen newspaper that he “couldn’t live with this secret any longer” and had handed himself in to police in the city of Graz.

“The past few days have been a nightmare. I didn’t know if I would get found out. I didn’t know whether this doping doctor had concealed everything,” Preidler said. He said that he had been sought out by the doping ring and had only started doping “recently”, insisting that his professional successes -such as at the Giro d’Italia -- had been “clean”. “It was the biggest mistake of my life,” he added. On Sunday prosecutors announced that another cyclist -named in Austrian media as Stefan Denifl -- had admitted to doping

offences. Some of the raids last week centred on the Austrian resort of Seefeld, where the Nordic skiing world championships were being held. Five skiers were arrested: two Austrians, Dominik Baldauf and Max Hauke, Estonians Karel Tammjaerv and Andreas Veerpalu, and Kazakh athlete Alexei Poltoranin. Footage later posted on social media showed Hauke apparently caught red-handed with a needle in his arm during the police raid with an officer looking on. (afp)

Crunch time for Solari as Madrid left relying on Europe again

MADRID - Santiago Solari’s future is likely to hinge on Real Madrid again winning the Champions League but two defeats by Barcelona in four days have brought old problems back to the surface. After being knocked out of the Copa del Rey and effectively deemed irrelevant in the title race, a third loss in as many games could see Madrid’s season wiped out in a week. “We have to react,” said defender Dani Carvajal. “It’s probably been one of the toughest weeks in my time here.” Ajax deserved more from the 2-1 loss in Amsterdam that, in theory, puts their opponents firmly in charge ahead of the second leg on Tuesday. But three consecutive defeats at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time in 15 years means Madrid will be feeling the heat. Solari too, the coach that was handed a contract until 2021 when appointed only five months ago but who might not last the season should Ajax do the unthinkable and reach the quarter-finals. Jose Mourinho’s criticism as a pundit for bEIN Sports on the latest Clasico will be seen as opportunistic but the reality is he is still well-regarded at Real. Unlike other potential successors, he is also available to start immediately. Still, Solari will know Madrid have been here before.

Last season, Zinedine Zidane’s team crashed out earlier in the Copa del Rey and to Leganes, not Barcelona. They were adrift in La Liga too. But victories in Europe over Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus blurred those failures while beating Liverpool in the final seemed to extinguish them almost completely.
