LOS ANGELES - Actor Uma Thurman has accused movie producer Harvey Weinstein of sexually assaulting her at a London hotel after they worked together on the 1994 hit film “Pulp Fiction.”

In a New York Times article on Saturday by columnist Maureen Dowd, Thurman broke her silence after saying in October that she would wait to speak out about inappropriate behavior in the workplace because she did not want to say anything in anger.

Thurman became the latest of more than 70 women who have accused 65-year-old Weinstein of sexual misconduct, including rape. Weinstein’s lawyer said on Saturday that the producer had immediately apologized to Thurman for making an “awkward pass” at her 25 years ago, but that her claims about being physically assaulted were untrue.

In the Times article, Thurman, 47, said Weinstein pushed her down when she met him in his suite at London’s Savoy Hotel.

“He tried to shove himself on me. He tried to expose himself. He did all kinds of unpleasant things. But he didn’t actually put his back into it and force me,” she told the newspaper.

Asked for further comment by Reuters, a representative for Thurman said the Times article spoke for itself.

Weinstein’s lawyer, Ben Brafman, said the producer was stunned and saddened by what he considered false allegations from someone he worked closely with for more than two decades.

“Mr Weinstein acknowledges making an awkward pass at Ms Thurman 25 years ago which he regrets and immediately apologized for,” Brafman said in a statement.

“Why Ms Thurman would wait 25 years to publicly discuss this incident and why according to Weinstein, she would embellish what really happened to include false accusations of attempted physical assault is a mystery to Weinstein and his attorneys.”

Brafman said Thurman’s statements to the Times were being carefully examined and investigated “before deciding whether any legal action against her would be appropriate.” (rtr)

MINNEAPOLIS - Justin Timberlake caused a national controversy when he performed the Super Bowl halftime show with Janet Jackson in 2004, and the pop singer said on Thursday not to expect his partner in crime to appear this time around.

Timberlake on Sunday will return to America’s biggest stage 14 years after a “wardrobe malfunction” overshadowed his last gig at the National Football League’s championship game.

“To be honest I had a ton of grand ideas about special guests. There’s a whole list. I think Vegas has a lot of odds on it. From NSYNC to (Jay-Z) to Chris Stapleton to Janet,” Timberlake told a news conference in Minneapolis.

“But this year... my band, the Tennessee Kids, I feel like they are my special guests and I am excited this year to rock the stage and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Timberlake infamously ripped off part of Jackson’s garment during their halftime show performance in Houston and briefly bared her breast.

The incident coined the phrase “wardrobe malfunction.”

The Parents Television Council published an open letter to Timberlake on Thursday asking the 10-times Grammy winner to keep his performance, which is estimated to draw more than 100 million viewers, friendly and safe for children.

“The fallout of your performance during Super Bowl XXXVIII has left an indelible mark. You really threw us – and millions of parents who were watching with their kids,” the group wrote.

“The now-infamous wardrobe malfunction was the biggest news story for weeks, even at a time when the nation had launched into war in Iraq.”

The letter continued, “We ask you to keep the halftime show friendly and safe for the children watching, and who may be hoping to emulate you one day.” (rtr)

Four workers killed in railway project crane collapse in Matraram Here are ten workplace accidents occurred in the public and private construction projects:

1. On August 4, 2017, two workers of Light Rail Transit (LRT) construction project in Palembang fell to deaths from an LRT pole.

2. On September 22, 2017, the bridge at the Bocimi (Bogor-Ciawi-Sukabumi) toll road construction in Bogor District collapsed and killed one worker and injured two others.

3. On October 26, 2017, a crane at the Bogor Outer Ringroad (BORR) toll road construction fell on a public highway.

4. On October 29, 2017, a girder at the Pasuruan-Probolinggo (Paspro) toll road construction collapsed and killed one of the workers.

5. On November 15, 2017, a concrete of the LRT construction project fell on a car at Jalan MT Haryono in East Jakarta.

6. On November 16, 2017, a crane that carried a variable message sign was involved in an accident at the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll road near the Elevate Jakarta-Cikampek Toll road project.

7. On December 9, 2017, two girder rods of the Ciputrapinggan Bridge construction collapsed.

8. On December 26, 2017, a ceiling at the Pakubuwono Spring Apartment collapsed.

9. On December 30, 2017, a girder rod collapsed at the Pemalang-Batang toll road construction site.

10. On January 4, 2018, six massive girder rods collapsed at the Depok - Antasari toll road project after the rods were accidentally knocked over by an excavator.

JAKARTA - A crane collapse early on Sunday at the construction site of a railway track in Matraman, East Jakarta, has killed four workers and injured five others. The crane, which was used to lift rail pads for a four-track railway project that will link Jakarta to Cikarang, collapsed at 5 a.m. near Jl. Matraman Raya.

The deceased were taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta, while the injured were taken to Premier Hospital in East Jakarta.

The East Jakarta Police reported that five workers were operating the crane.

The police seized the helmets, vests, shoes and ID cards of the victims as evidence.

Yadi, a resident, said the crane had fallen at the site several times, but it was only this morning that it had taken lives. “The crane has collapsed several times, once it fell on a house,” he said, as quoted by

wartakotalive.com.

Last month, a box girder at the construction site of the light rapid transit (LRT) project in Utan Kayu, East Jakarta, fell in the early hours of the morning, injuring five workers. Biopore can help reduce flooding

DENPASAR - Biopores are one way to have rainwater absorbed back into the ground instead of flowing right back out to sea. They help restre well water and also reduce flooding. However with heavy rainfall biopores are cannot absorb enough water at once to prevent flooding.

Academic and spatial planner, Prof. I Putu Rumawan Salain, explained that biopores work best in areas where the ground water is deep however places where groundwater is relatively hear the surface like in Renon, Sanglah, Sidakarya and other areas in the South, biopores do not work very well.

Bipores here are made with depths of just 50cm, so not a lot of water is absorbed. Areas Norht of Panjer are more suitable for biopores. “When there is already water 1 meter down, creating one meter deep biopores is not very useful as the water just flows back out”, he said on Friday (Feb. 2).

Denpasar is part of Bali’s lowlands where water flows out to sea from upstream areas. If the water in the upstream rivers is not handled well, then more water arrives downstream. It is therefor important for upstream areas to be equipped with biopores to absorb more water.

The standard distance between biopores is a minimum of 50 cm but ideally 1 meter apart. Biopores can also serve as composts to make fertilizer but they do require maintenance.

Biopore can be made using paralon pipe or even with used paint cans that are wider. Wider biopores mean more water can enter. “Paragon paint cans can have there bottoms removed to make larger biopores than the ones made using paralon pipe. With a wider opening, the distance between the biopores should also be farther”, explained Prof. Salain.

Biopores should be created in areas with heavy rainfall at strategic topographical points so that water does not pool but flows into the biopore. “So it is good to place biopores wherever water tends to pool. Renon is one such area, however because the groundwater is just 1 meter from the surface, it is hard to absorb much more water here”, he added.

According to Prof Salain, public facilities such as Tiara Dewata, Lotte Mart and Badung Market are suitable places to install biopores. “That way the entire surface area is not covered in concrete which does not absorb water”, he said, adding that surfaces like concrete should be designed to have water flow towards biopores, or absorption wells. To reduce flooding in large public areas like schools, offices and

housing complexes, biopores should be created, emphasized Prof. Salain.

This urban planner also said that he hopes to see building permit regulations include the obligation to create biopores when appropriate. For a ‘type 21” house, with a land area of

60 square meters or more should have at least three biopores.

For land areas of more than 400 square meters, there should also be absorption wells. Catchment wells are another way to reduce the amount of water that pools on the surface of larger areas. (kmb42)

Kuta, Legian and Seminyak most vulnerable to floods MANGUPURA - The increasingly dense population growth is directly proportional to the development of settlements especially in the area of Badung, especially Kuta and South Kuta. Due to the increasing number of development, water absorption area also decreases. Every rainy season, the densely populated areas have been always the ‘target’ of rainwater puddles.

Based on the data compiled by Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Badung, a total of 15 points are flood-prone areas in Badung. It spreads from South Badung to North Badung. Among them, there are Tanjung Benoa, Benoa, Kedonganan, Tuban, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, South Kerobokan, Kerobokan, Dalung, Kapal, Penarungan, Darmasaba and Carang sari. The most vulnerable to floods are Kuta, Legian and Seminyak.

According to Wayan Netra, Division Head of Prevention and Preparedness of BPBD Badung when asked for his confirmation on Saturday (Feb. 3) at the beginning of 2018, the most severe floods occurred in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, especially on Sunset Road of Seminyak. Netra added there are 14 points of the areas being prone to landslides. In Petang area, there are 7 villages, namely Carangsari, Kecasan, Pangsan, Petang, Sulangai, Plaga and Beloksidan.

Meanwhile, in Abiansemal there are 4 villages namely Ayunan, Bongkasa, Sangeh and Bongkasa Pertiwi; then in Mengwi there is one area prone to landslides, namely in Kuwum; and South Kuta includes Kutuh, Benoa, Pecatu and Ungasan. “In South Kuta, there is also limestone cliff that is also prone to landslides,” he explained.

Ancient statues return to Lebanon as war on smuggling intensifies

BEIRUT - Ancient sculptures that were missing for decades after being stolen during Lebanon’s civil war are to go on display in Beirut thanks to a global fight against antiquities smuggling that has been stepped up since wartime looting in Iraq and Syria.

The five marble statues were among a haul of hundreds that Lebanese militiamen took from a storehouse in 1981, some of which are only now emerging onto the shadowy global arts market and even into the world’s greatest museums.

Three of the five sculptures unveiled at a ceremony in Beirut on Friday were spotted in New York’s Metropolitan Museum - where they were on loan from a private collector - by a curator who identified them using Art Loss, an online register of stolen artefacts.

non was Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Matthew Bogdanos, an Iraq war veteran who led the investigation into looting at the national museum in Baghdad during the chaos of the U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.

Outrage at looting there and in Syria, and fear that art trafficking was funding militant groups, has driven countries to work together to stop it, said Bogdanos, who was in Beirut on Friday for a ceremony to unveil the statues.

“It has resulted in greater attention, greater scrutiny and greater resources, all of which we desperately need in order to fight such an entrenched global network,” Bogdanos, whose office has recovered thousands of stolen antiquities in recent years, told Reuters at the ceremony at Beirut’s National Museum.

One of the other statues was identified last year by a gallery in

Germany, which noticed it on the Art Loss register. The fifth was seized in a container entering Lebanon’s port of Tripoli last month.

Archaeologists excavated all the statues in the 1960s and 1970s in Sidon at the Temple of Eshmoun, a god of healing.

They were carved between the sixth and fourth centuries BC, when Lebanon’s Phoenician civilisation was ruled by the Persian empire but influenced by Greek art and culture.

One of the statues, a bull’s head, was from the capital of a pillar in the temple. The other statues, of youths and children, included one dedicated to the temple by fond relatives in thanks for the recovery from illness of their child.

“HERITAGE IS NOT FOR SALE”

They will be added to the Beirut museum’s display of Eshmoun sculptures, which include a com-

plete capital with bull heads facing in each direction and marble statues of babies and children.

Only a handful of more than 500 Eshmoun statues pillaged from the storerooms of Byblos citadel in 1981 have been identified and returned to Lebanon.

“We will put every resource that we have to recover any piece wherever it is and whoever thinks it belongs to him. Our heritage is not for sale,” said Lebanon’s Culture Minister Ghattas Khoury.

Like these pieces, items smuggled from Iraq and Syria may stay hidden for decades before traffickers start selling them to collectors.

“It is rare that we would see anything on the market for 10 or 20 or even 30 years, because they do have the patience. They stockpile these pieces,” said Bogdanos.

The international nature of the trade makes it hard to trace them.

“If you would follow the pieces

which we have here, there was a kind of ping-pong between Europe, America, Europe again ... it’s a globalisation,” said Rolf Stucky, a Swiss archaeologist who registered many of the looted Eshmoun statues on Art Loss in the 1990s, allowing them to be identified now.

But countries now share information and help train authorities, both in the main markets for stolen artefacts and in the regions from which they come.

Lebanon itself has stopped many foreign pieces from being shipped through Beirut, said Ghattas. As a neighbour of Syria, it is a major route for items looted from there.

“In many respects (smugglers) didn’t have to be smart in their trafficking behaviour simply because no countries were cooperating enough, were devoting enough resources to stop it,” said Bogdanos.

Tidal waves erodes 25 meters of road at Pengastulan

SINGARAJA — Neighborhood road at Kauman hamlet, Pengastulan, Seririt, was affected by tidal waves. As a result, about 25 meters of paving block on the road gets eroded. In addition to eroding the paving blocks, seawater in this coastal area had soaked the home yard of residents in the local village.

As seen at the scene on Wednesday (Jan. 31), the neighborhood road has just been completed by the local village. It is located right on the edge of the beach and can only be passed by motorcycles. The road itself has been protected by beach-safety concrete. However, the coastal area has begun to be hit by tidal waves from Monday (Jan. 29). Inevitably, seawater eroded the paving blocks on this road section. The paving blocks came off because the concrete functioned to strengthen them has been destroyed by the hard scouring of the waves.

Following the incident, village officials have come down to record the losses caused by the natural disasters. To avoid difficulties, the damaged road section is temporarily compacted with sand.

Meanwhile, the released paving blocks it stacked on the roadside.

To block the seawater, the people directly adjacent to the road have to install an embankment with a sandbags on the roadside.

Headman of Pengastulan, I Ketut Yasa, when contacted last Wednesday justified the incident. He said the road is directly located on the beach and adjacent to the coastal breakwater having been installed several years earlier. Since the waves are malignant enough to crash, the seawater also eroded the paving blocks installed. Temporarily, the road damage has been recorded and reported to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). “It’s true the tidal waves in our area have damaged the paving blocks installation and preliminary data shows the damage is along 25 meters. The road is still passable and the damage has been reported to BPBD through the subdistrict government,” he said.

Yasa added that since the tidal waves hit the residents’ houses along the coast, the condition is still safe and no damages were reported. However, he admitted when the tidal waves occurred, seawater flooded the local people’s home yard. Fortunately, the incident did not cause any damages or disrupt people’s activities.

“So far, there is no house damage, but the pounding waves reached people’s home yard. We have appealed to people to be alert because this extreme weather can trigger tidal waves any time,” he added. (kmb38)

A mangosteen exporter from Pupuan, Tabanan, Jero Tesan, said that mangosteen orchard registration becomes one of the absolute requirements requested by AQSIQ of Chinese government. Currently, the registered mangosteen orchard in Bali only reached 118 hectares, while the unregistered reaches thousands of hectares.

He continued that if only relying on the acreage of the orchard having been registered, the mangosteen export will be very small reaching 200 tons of mangosteen. Therefore, the registration of mangosteen orchards in Bali should be further expanded so that it can obtain more mangosteen production of Bali.

One of the measures having been done is by holding Focus Group Discussion (FGD) related to the readiness of mangosteen farmers to meet the Chinese market at Padangan village, Pupuan, Tabanan, on Monday (Jan. 29). According to Jero Tesan, the FGD involved a num-

ber of mangosteen farmers, businessmen, academics, Tabanan government and the Quarantine Center. The discussion made the decision that entrepreneurs will integrate with the government in order to prepare the financing related to the registration of the orchard, while mangosteen farmers will prepare the data related to the orchard registration.

In addition, the FGD also decided that the Quarantine Center is committed to preserving the consequences so that mangosteen export does not give illegal impression. “Later on the Quarantine Center will not allow to exporting mangosteen through Bali if the mangosteen has not owned orchard registration and not pass through registered packing house. This measure is meant to maintain the quality of mangosteen of Bali production in export markets,” he said.

Tesan, who also serves as Chairman of the Indonesia Mangosteen Association, also explained that continuation of the FGD will be followed up with mangosteen tree data collection that will be submitted for registration. On the other hand, to strengthen the position of packing house in Bali, his association will maximize harvest wards at each village, collectors, and farmer groups. Later, the ward will be connected to the Quarantine Center to get a search number.

He targeted to conduct a certification of mangosteen orchard for an area of 600 hectares, so that there are a total of 700 hectares registered in 2018. SINGARAJA — The topography of Buleleng known as nyegara gunung (bordering with sea and mountain—Ed) seems unavoidable from the threat of natural disasters. This fact cannot be denied because the upstream of Buleleng is bordered with hills where landslides potentially occur. In addition, the hill areas are prone to be hit by tornado.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Buleleng is bordered with the sea from east to west.

The areas located on the northern coastlines are prone to tidal wave disasters, seawater floods and even tsunami waves to threaten the coastal areas of Buleleng.

On this condition, local government through Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) prior to entering the monsoon incessantly monitors and establishes coordination with sub-districts forwarded to village government. This coordination is to build cooperation in educating citizens to be aware of the possibility of natural disasters in the region. In addition, the community is also ‘stimulated’ so as to get motivated to always care and ready to participate in handling the condition recovery when the region is hit by natural disasters.

Before drafting the early anticipatory efforts, BPBD has long been compiling maps of disaster-prone areas. Broadly speaking, the flood disaster has the potential to occur in Singaraja town area. Early this year, previously the urban areas mapped out to be prone to flood was hit by flash flood causing damages to infrastructure, schools and houses.

Apart from urban areas, the flash flood also potentially occurs to rural areas as in the subdistrict of Sawan, Banjar, Seririt and Gerokgak. This flash flood has repeatedly hit the region such as in Banyupoh village and Tinga-Tinga, Grokgak subdistrict. The latest flash flood hit the Dencarik village and Baktiseraga village in Buleleng.

fore entering rainy season the BPBD has promoted mitigation of watershed and irrigation in several locations. It is important because the experience of flash flood disasters in previous years was triggered by clogged watershed or irrigation channel by waste, or the upstream agricultural activities replaced the waterabsorption buffer plants with seasonal plants that do not optimally absorb during the rains.

When it rains, erosion is ubiquitous and carries wood or tree branches. When its watershed streams are narrow, automatically the water will be restrained and results in water overflow to the occurrence of flash flood.

The areas being prone to landslide disaster are dominated by villages in hilly areas starting from Tejakula subdistrict, upper part of Kubutambahan, upper part of Sawan, Sukasada, upper part of Banjar and Busungbiu.

Landslide disaster in the disaster-prone areas earlier this year occurred again at Munduk, Pedawa, Gobleg and Gesing village. Meanwhile, tidal disaster-prone areas and seawater floods are potentially experienced by people living near the coast from east to west of Buleleng. Tidal disasters usually occur during January to February.

DENPASAR — The price hike of dry unhulled grain (GKP) at farmer level since May 2017 is not in line with the farmer’s exchange rate (NTP) of Bali province. The exchange rate in January 2018 fell 0.43 percent from 103.93 in December 2017 to 103.48.

Head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, said that actually the price index received by farmers recorded an increase of 0.39 percent. However, in fact the index paid by farmers is greater than the index received by farmers namely 0.82 percent,” he explained.

The price index received by farmers from agriculture reached 131.14, showing an increase of 0.39 percent compared to December 2017 that amounted to 130.64.

farmers in January 2018 recorded an increase of higher than the index received by farmers namely 0.82 percent from 125.70 in December 2017 to 126.73.

Maldives delay in freeing opposition leaders fuels domestic, international concern

MALE - As domestic and international pressure mounts, the Maldives has delayed complying with a Supreme Court order for the immediate release and new trials of nine opposition leaders, freeing them to contest presidential elections this year.

The Indian Ocean nation has been mired in political unrest since Mohamed Nasheed, its first democratically elected leader, was ousted in 2012. He has been in exile on medical grounds from a 13-year jail sentence on terrorism charges.

The Supreme Court on Thursday said the trials of Nasheed and eight others, many of whom had challenged President Abdulla Yameen, had violated the constitution and international law.

It found that prosecutors and judges were unduly influenced “to conduct politically motivated investigations” against them.

On Friday, Attorney General Mohamed Anil said he had held discussions with Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed over the administration’s concerns about releasing individuals whose offences ranged from terrorism to corruption and treason.

“The prosecutor general is currently in the process of examining the cases to determine the best way to proceed with the implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling, and the prosecutor general will present recommendations at the earliest,” the government said in a statement.

The unexpected ruling frees opposition leaders to run against Yameen in the presidential poll expected to be completed by Oc-

tober. The terrorism convictions would normally bar them from competing unless they received presidential pardons after completing a third of their jail terms.

The joint opposition of the Maldives expressed concern over Yameen’s refusal to abide by the order.

“We are deeply fearful that the government’s refusal to implement the Supreme Court order could escalate to unrest and incite violence across the country,” it said in a statement.

Hundreds of opposition supporters chanted slogans such as “Enforce the Supreme Court ruling,” and “Defend the constitution,” in a Friday night rally outside the opposition MDP campaign center in Male, the capital.

The United Nations, the United States, the European Union and India also urged Yameen’s government to follow the ruling.

ROME - An Italian man opened fire on African migrants in the central city of Macerata on Saturday, injuring six people before he was captured, in what police said was a racially motivated attack.

The shootings happened just days after a Nigerian migrant was arrested in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Italian woman, whose dismembered body was discovered stuffed into two suitcases near Macerata.

Police named the suspected shooter as Luca Traini, 28, and said he had an Italian flag draped over his shoulders when he was seized in the street by armed police. Onlookers said he made a fascist salute before being handcuffed.

“He drove around in his car and when he saw any black people he

shot them,” Marcello Mancini, a Macerata resident, told Reuters television. Police said one of the six victims was seriously hurt and needed surgery, but gave no further details.

Traini also fired shots at the offices of the ruling centre-left Democratic Party (PD) in Macerata, but did not injure anyone there. The PD said he had stood as a candidate for the rightist Northern League at local elections last year but had not received any votes.

The League backs fiercely anti-immigrant policies and is part of ex-prime Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right alliance that is leading in the polls ahead of a March 4 national election.

League leader Matteo Salvini distanced himself from the shoot-

ing, but blamed mass immigration for the tensions.

“I can’t wait to get into government to restore security, social justice and serenity to Italy,” he told reporters.

Companies are already reporting difficulties finding qualified workers, which economists say will force some to significantly raise wages as they compete for scarce labor. Wage growth last month came as increases in the minimum wage came into effect in 18 states in January. Wages probably also got a lift from the tax cut. Companies like Starbucks Corp and FedEx Corp have said they will use some of the savings from lower taxes to boost wages for workers.

Further gains are expected in February when Walmart raises entry-level wages for hourly employees at its U.S. stores. Annual wage growth is now close to the 3 percent that economists say is needed to push inflation towards the Fed’s 2 percent target.

But the road to faster wage growth remains long. The year-on-year rise in average hourly earnings for production and non-supervisory workers was stuck at 2.4 percent in January.

That boosted the year-on-year increase in average hourly earnings to 2.9 percent, the largest rise since June 2009, from 2.7 percent in December. Workers, however, put in fewer hours last month likely because of bitterly cold weather. The average workweek fell to 34.3 hours, the shortest in four months, from 34.5 hours in December.

The robust employment report underscored the strong momentum in the economy, raising the possibility that the Federal Reserve could be a bit more aggressive in raising interest rates this year. The U.S. central bank has forecast three rate increases this year after raising borrowing costs three times in 2017.

“The acceleration in average hourly earnings growth punches a hole in the narrative that wage growth remains lackluster,” said Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West in San Francisco. “The Goldilocks view of inflation is being sorely challenged right now.”

Fed officials on Wednesday expressed optimism that inflation will rise toward the central bank’s target this year. Policymakers, who voted to keep interest rates unchanged, described the labor market as having “continued to strengthen,” and economic activity as “rising at a solid rate.”

U.S. financial markets have priced in a rate hike in March. Prices for U.S. Treasuries fell, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note hitting a four-year high as investors worried about high inflation. Entil is wrapped with bamboo leaves that can make entil taste more delicious. Green color of bamboo leaves seep into the rice when cooked, resulting in a greenish color. Indeed, the making of this serving takes a long

Entil is famous in the area of Pupuan, while it is also made at Tengkudak, Penebel, Tabanan district.

usually presented on particular days, such as Nyepi or Day of Silence where the Hindus perform catur brata penyepian or four abstinences where people will not turn or light fire, not work, not travel and not enjoy any entertainment, so food stock is needed. On that account, entil is chosen because it is durable and not easily stale. “Now, entil is widely sold in traditional markets and stalls, like what I do,” she said.

Entil is made from rice and grated coconut and then wrapped in bamboo leaves tied with rope. In the past, people used bamboo or coconut bark ropes, but now many people prefer to use plastic ropes. Meanwhile, the seasoning in use includes base

genep (complete seasoning), such as onion, garlic, chili, ginger, turmeric, aromatic ginger, galangal and other spices. It is also coupled with grated coconut to make urap seasoning.

How to make it? First of all, soak rice for overnight. The rice is then put on a leaf then wrap with bamboo leaves and tied with bamboo string.

With an eye on Russia, U.S. to increase nuclear capabilities

WASHINGTON - Concerned about Russia’s growing tactical nuclear weapons, the United States will expand its nuclear capabilities, a policy document released on Friday said, a move some critics say could increase the risk of miscalculation between the two countries.

It represents the latest sign of hardening resolve by President Donald Trump’s administration to address challenges from Russia, at the same time he is pushing for improved ties with Moscow to rein in a nuclear North Korea.

The focus on Russia is in line with the Pentagon shifting priorities from the fight against Islamist militants to “great power competition” with Moscow and Beijing.

“Our strategy will ensure Russia understands that any use of nuclear weapons, however limited, is unacceptable,” the document, known as the Nuclear Posture Review, said.

The rationale for building up new nuclear capabilities, U.S. officials said, is that Russia currently perceives the United States’ nuclear posture and capabilities as inadequate.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday it was very disappointed by the content of the document, which, it said, has a confrontational feel

and anti-Russian orientation.

“We, of course, will have to take into account the approach enacted now in Washington and to take the needed measures to secure our own safety,” the ministry said.

It denied accusations against Russia made in the U.S. document.

The ministry added that Russia was ready to work constructively with the Americans.

By expanding its own low-yield nuclear capability, the United States would deter Russia from using nuclear weapons, U.S. officials argue.

Low-yield nuclear weapons, while still devastating, have a strength of less than 20 kilotons. The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima had about the same explosive power.

The argument for these weapons is that larger nuclear bombs are so catastrophic that they would never be used and do not work as an effective deterrent.

With less power and destruction, the low-yield option would potentially be more likely to be used, serving as an effective deterrent.

Syrian rebels down Russian plane, kill pilot AMMAN - Syrian rebels shot down a Russian warplane on Saturday and killed its pilot on the ground after he ejected from the plane, Russia’s defence ministry and Syrian rebels said.

The SU-25 came down in an area of northern Idlib province that has seen heavy air strikes and fighting on the ground between Syria’s government forces backed by Russia and Iran, and rebel groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrians opposed to Assad see Russia as an invading force they blame for the deaths of thousands of civilians since Moscow joined the war on the side of the government in 2015.

The U.S. State Department said it had seen reports about the incident and allegations that the United States provided missiles to groups in Syria.

“The United States has never provided MANPAD missiles to any group in Syria, and we are deeply concerned that such weapons are being used,” said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

“The solution to the violence is a return to the Geneva process as soon as possible and we call on Russia to live up to its commitments in that regards.”

The Russian plane was shot down over the town of Khan alSubl near the city of Saraqeb, close to a major highway where the Syrian army and Iranian-backed militias are trying to advance, a rebel source said.

Although the Russian pilot escaped the crash, he was killed by rebels who had tried to capture him, the source said.

Tharir al-Sham, a jihadist group spearheaded by the former Syrian branch of al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for shooting down the plane on social media, saying one of its fighters had scored a direct hit with a shoulder launched anti-aircraft missile.

“This work is the least we can do to revenge our people. Let the criminal invaders know that our skies are not a picnic and they will not pass through without paying a price, God willing,” senior commander Mahmoud Turkomani said in a statement released by the group.

Russia’s Defence Ministry also said that the aircraft was downed by a portable surface-to-air missile. The pilot reported that he had ejected by parachute, it said, and he was later killed on the ground.

“The pilot died in a fight with terrorists,” the ministry said. (rtr)

SITUBONDO - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed his wish to send students to monitor the condition in Asmat, in the eastern province of Papua, after they criticized him over the situation. “Perhaps, later, I will send the chairmen and members of Student Executive Board (BEM) from the top state University of Indonesia (UI) to Asmat,” he said, after attending an event in Salafiyah Safi`iyah Islamic boarding school in Sukorejo, Situbondo, East Java, on Saturday.

The chief of BEM of UI, Zaadit Taqwa, raised a yellow book to warn Jokowi over the recent spread of measles and malnutrition, which have claimed lives in Asmat, after the president gave a speech at an event to mark the university`s anniversary on Friday. “Let them check the situation there for themselves and the big problems that we are facing in regions, especially Papua,” Jokowi noted.

He added that he had no problem with the student`s action.

“Such a dynamic is common. He is a young activist. It is something common. I think it is good that there is someone to remind us,” he remarked.

BEM UI has demanded three things from the president.

The first is related to the malnutrition problem in Papua, the second is connected to the idea of naming active police officers as acting governors, and the third is about the student organization, which is considered to limit students` movement.

Jokowi has sent a team to help measles patients, conduct vaccination programs, and prepare measures to deal with the post-outbreak condition. More than 71 children have died due to the measles outbreak in Asmat. The president has also offered to relocate the people of Asmat to enable them to have better access to health facilities. (ant)

N219 aircraft completes 15th test flight BANDUNG - State-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI) conducted another test flight of its N219 aircraft at the Husein Sastanegara International Airport in Bandung, West Java, on Friday. “Today, we conducted the 15th test flight of the N219 aircraft to secure an air worthiness certificate. The certification is a lengthy process, as (the aircraft) must complete 300 hours of test flights to secure it,” PT DI expert Andi Alisjahbana stated.

As of Friday, the N219 aircraft had undergone 17 hours of test flights. During the test flight, the plane, piloted by Esther Gayatri Saleh, took off from the airport at 9 a.m. local time on Friday and successfully landed at around 10 a.m. local time.

One of the important determining factors for any aircraft to be declared airworthy is that it must secure a certificate from the Directorate of Airworthiness and Aircraft Operation of the Indonesian Transportation Ministry, he noted. “In essence, before the aircraft can be put to public service, it must guarantee the security and safety of its passengers,” he remarked.

During the test flight this time, PT DI focused on the capability of the N219 aircraft to perform a flip maneuver of around 10 degrees, he explained. “What we are doing today is to observe the response of its elevator on the rear of the aircraft. It is a kind of tail that is in a vertical and horizontal position,” he stated.

“We test it. There is feather duster on the aircraft`s tail to see whether the air flow is according to specifications. If not, we will improve it,” he noted. He believes the N219 aircraft will be able to complete 300 hours of test flights this year. (ant)

Indonesian police investigate detention of transgender women in Aceh

BANDA ACEH - Indonesia’s national police chief has ordered an investigation into the detention of 12 transgender women in the province of Aceh, officials said on Friday, after reports that they were stripped, beaten and forced to cut their hair before being released without charge. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population but Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, is the only province that enforces Islamic law and outlaws homosexuality.

Religious police and vigilantes in the ultra-conservative province often raid homes and places of work and detain people on suspicion of engaging in homosexual activity.

Police in North Aceh raided hair salons - where transgender people often work - last weekend and briefly detained 12 individuals. Rights activists and media reports said they were forced to cut their hair and were stripped and beaten.

“There were photos circulated that led us to suspect that there had been physical action taken against the suspects,” Misbahul Munauwar, a spokesman for Aceh police, said. “The national police chief has instructed us to investigate those photos and to determine if there was any...procedural or ethical violation.” A national

police spokesman confirmed that police chief Tito Karnavian had ordered the investigation.

Human Rights Watch and other rights groups welcomed the move, which comes amid a rising tide of hostility against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

Police in Aceh and elsewhere have stepped up raids on what they call “gay spas” and “gay sex parties” in recent months, detaining people on charges of violating strict anti-pornography laws. Dozens of protesters on Friday staged an anti-LGBT rally outside a mosque in the provincial capital Banda Aceh.

“We don’t hate gay, bisexual or transgender people.

What we hate is their actions, and if we can prove their actions, they will be punished,” Aceh governor Irwandi Yusuf told the small crowd.

Last year, the provincial and central governments drew international condemnation after authorities in Aceh tried two young men on charges of engaging in gay sex and then publicly caned them - the first such case in the country. Indonesia’s parliament is also drafting revisions to the national criminal code that could ban all consensual sex outside marriage.

The parliamentary commission drawing up recommendations has still to finalise its proposals, but a draft seen by Reuters includes measures to criminalise extramarital sex, same-sex relations and co-habitation, all of which were previously unregulated. (rtr)

LONDON - Four-times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has yet to sign a new contract with Mercedes but talks are going well, team principal Toto Wolff said on Thursday.

“Lewis has become such an important pillar within the team that it’s a no-brainer that we continue with each other,” the Austrian said in an interview on the team website (www.mercedesamgf1.com).

“The discussions are ongoing in a very positive mindset and it’s just a matter of time when we seal it and put a signature to the document.”

Hamilton, 33, is out of contract at the end of 2018 -- a year that could see him become only the third driver to take five champion-

ships after seven-times title winner Michael Schumacher and the late Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio.

The Briton said in November that he expected negotiations to be straightforward.

“It is quite an easy process for us,” Hamilton said then. “We already have something in place and it’s really just about extending it and enhancing it, working on what more I can do for them, for the sponsors, the brand and vice versa.”

Since then, Hamilton has erased much of his social media and kept a low profile.

His Twitter feed, followed by 5.25 million people, now has only two posts -- one from the team and

the other a sponsor -- that the driver has retweeted.

The season starts in Australia on March 25.

Wolff said the new F1 W09 car, to be launched at Silverstone on Feb. 22, was being fired up at the factory for the first time on Thursday.

“We’ve had a good winter, I would say,” he added. “No real drama, but there is always stress within the organisation at that time of the year.”

Last year’s car was described

Aaron Ramsey scored a hat-trick on Saturday as Arsenal thrashed Everton 5-1 in the Premier League at the Emirates with a display of free-flowing football that the Gunners have sorely lacked away from home this season. The home side blasted in four goals in the first half to put the game beyond doubt, leaving their woeful midweek loss at Swansea far behind them.

The whole team played crap,” he told reporters.

By contrast, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expressed satisfaction with the level of skill his players brought to the game. “We were quick, mobile, technically very sharp. We finished very well as well,” he said, adding that he was happy with the way his new players had integrated with the team.

“Overall it was a very convincing first performance,” he said of new signings Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang. He singled out Mkhitaryan for praise after the Armenian helped to create three of his side’s goals, linking up repeatedly with winger Hector Bellerin on the left to pull Everton out of shape. “He’s a good link player and works very hard as well. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho offered only the briefest explanation as to why he dropped the club’s record signing Paul Pogba for Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford. The Frenchman had been criticised for his midweek performance in the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, during which he was substituted in the 63rd minute after having an animated conversation with Mourinho on the touchline.

On Saturday, the manager refused to go into details about what was said but a video was widely shared on social media showing the Portuguese gesticulating at the Frenchman.

The upshot was Pogba dropped to the bench for the first time since joining United for 89 million pounds ($125.67 million) in August 2016, with 21-year-old midfielder Scott McTominay named in his place. Asked why the Frenchman had been left out, Mourinho said: “Just change, try different qualities with different players.”

Pogba eventually came on as a 65th-minute substitute for Jesse Lingard in a disjointed United performance that still saw United close

the gap on leaders Manchester City to 13 points.

“We had to be patient but had to keep the intensity high and the pressure. We had to break down the Berlin Wall organised so well by (Huddersfield manager) David Wagner,” said Mourinho.

Although Pogba has delivered some excellent displays this season, he has also been criticised on several occasions, notably for his rash sending off against Arsenal.

Mourinho also said that Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who limped off injured against Spurs, has undergone knee surgery and will be out for at least two months.

“He had surgery this morning,” said Mourinho. “I don’t want to be very specific. It’s not the end of his season, not at all.

It’s a small intervention in his external (lateral) meniscus and I want to believe that by the end of March he can be back. “If he can be back by the end of March, I hope we have a big April and a big May still to play in more than one competition.” Fellaini first injured his knee playing for Belgium last October and has already had two spells out trying to rectify the problem. charge between Dani Carvajal and Raphael Varane to score on his debut after Isco had restored Madrid’s advantage. “I’m disgusted with the result, it’s hard to take,” Zidane told reporters. “After our second goal we had to control the ball, nothing else, and defensively we were not good.

“The truth is the game was under control and we had done the hard part, which is scoring. We scored the second, 2-1, but we made two errors and they scored two goals against us.” Madrid have now conceded in each of their last six league games and shipped a total of 25 goals, more than twice as many as Barcelona (10) and second-placed Atletico Madrid (9).

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho offered only the briefest explanation as to why he dropped the club’s record signing Paul Pogba for Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford. The Frenchman had been criticised for his midweek performance in the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, during which he was substituted in the 63rd minute after having an animated conversation with Mourinho on the touchline.

On Saturday, the manager refused to go into details about what was said but a video was widely shared on social media showing the Portuguese gesticulating at the Frenchman.

The upshot was Pogba dropped to the bench for the first time since joining United for 89 million pounds ($125.67 million) in August 2016, with 21-year-old midfielder Scott McTominay named in his place. Asked why the Frenchman had been left out, Mourinho said: “Just change, try different qualities with different players.”

LONDON - Four-times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has yet to sign a new contract with Mercedes but talks are going well, team principal Toto Wolff said on Thursday.

“Lewis has become such an important pillar within the team that it’s a no-brainer that we continue with each other,” the Austrian said in an interview on the team website (www.mercedesamgf1.com).

“The discussions are ongoing in a very positive mindset and it’s just a matter of time when we seal it and put a signature to the document.”

Hamilton, 33, is out of contract at the end of 2018 -- a year that could see him become only the third driver to take five champion-

ships after seven-times title winner Michael Schumacher and the late Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio.

The Briton said in November that he expected negotiations to be straightforward.

“It is quite an easy process for us,” Hamilton said then. “We already have something in place and it’s really just about extending it and enhancing it, working on what more I can do for them, for the sponsors, the brand and vice versa.”

Since then, Hamilton has erased much of his social media and kept a low profile.

His Twitter feed, followed by 5.25 million people, now has only two posts -- one from the team and

the other a sponsor -- that the driver has retweeted.

The season starts in Australia on March 25.

Wolff said the new F1 W09 car, to be launched at Silverstone on Feb. 22, was being fired up at the factory for the first time on Thursday.

“We’ve had a good winter, I would say,” he added. “No real drama, but there is always stress within the organisation at that time of the year.”

Last year’s car was described

With an eye on Russia, U.S. to increase nuclear capabilities

WASHINGTON - Concerned about Russia’s growing tactical nuclear weapons, the United States will expand its nuclear capabilities, a policy document released on Friday said, a move some critics say could increase the risk of miscalculation between the two countries.

It represents the latest sign of hardening resolve by President Donald Trump’s administration to address challenges from Russia, at the same time he is pushing for improved ties with Moscow to rein in a nuclear North Korea.

The focus on Russia is in line with the Pentagon shifting priorities from the fight against Islamist militants to “great power competition” with Moscow and Beijing.

“Our strategy will ensure Russia understands that any use of nuclear weapons, however limited, is unacceptable,” the document, known as the Nuclear Posture Review, said.

The rationale for building up new nuclear capabilities, U.S. officials said, is that Russia currently perceives the United States’ nuclear posture and capabilities as inadequate.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday it was very disappointed by the content of the document, which, it said, has a confrontational feel

and anti-Russian orientation.

“We, of course, will have to take into account the approach enacted now in Washington and to take the needed measures to secure our own safety,” the ministry said.

It denied accusations against Russia made in the U.S. document.

The ministry added that Russia was ready to work constructively with the Americans.

By expanding its own low-yield nuclear capability, the United States would deter Russia from using nuclear weapons, U.S. officials argue.

Low-yield nuclear weapons, while still devastating, have a strength of less than 20 kilotons. The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima had about the same explosive power.

The argument for these weapons is that larger nuclear bombs are so catastrophic that they would never be used and do not work as an effective deterrent.

With less power and destruction, the low-yield option would potentially be more likely to be used, serving as an effective deterrent.

The Pentagon document, which is largely in line with the previous review in 2010, said the United States will modify a small number of submarinelaunched ballistic missile warheads with low-yield options. (rtr)

Syrian rebels down Russian plane, kill pilot AMMAN - Syrian rebels shot down a Russian warplane on Saturday and killed its pilot on the ground after he ejected from the plane, Russia’s defence ministry and Syrian rebels said.

The SU-25 came down in an area of northern Idlib province that has seen heavy air strikes and fighting on the ground between Syria’s government forces backed by Russia and Iran, and rebel groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrians opposed to Assad see Russia as an invading force they blame for the deaths of thousands of civilians since Moscow joined the war on the side of the government in 2015.

The U.S. State Department said it had seen reports about the incident and allegations that the United States provided missiles to groups in Syria.

“The United States has never provided MANPAD missiles to any group in Syria, and we are deeply concerned that such weapons are being used,” said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

“The solution to the violence is a return to the Geneva process as soon as possible and we call on Russia to live up to its commitments in that regards.”

The Russian plane was shot down over the town of Khan alSubl near the city of Saraqeb, close to a major highway where the Syrian army and Iranian-backed militias are trying to advance, a rebel source said.

Although the Russian pilot escaped the crash, he was killed by rebels who had tried to capture him, the source said.

Tharir al-Sham, a jihadist group spearheaded by the former Syrian branch of al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for shooting down the plane on social media, saying one of its fighters had scored a direct hit with a shoulder launched anti-aircraft missile.

“This work is the least we can do to revenge our people. Let the criminal invaders know that our skies are not a picnic and they will not pass through without paying a price, God willing,” senior commander Mahmoud Turkomani said in a statement released by the group.

Russia’s Defence Ministry also said that the aircraft was downed by a portable surface-to-air missile. The pilot reported that he had ejected by parachute, it said, and he was later killed on the ground.

“The pilot died in a fight with terrorists,” the ministry said. (rtr)

SITUBONDO - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed his wish to send students to monitor the condition in Asmat, in the eastern province of Papua, after they criticized him over the situation. “Perhaps, later, I will send the chairmen and members of Student Executive Board (BEM) from the top state University of Indonesia (UI) to Asmat,” he said, after attending an event in Salafiyah Safi`iyah Islamic boarding school in Sukorejo, Situbondo, East Java, on Saturday.

The chief of BEM of UI, Zaadit Taqwa, raised a yellow book to warn Jokowi over the recent spread of measles and malnutrition, which have claimed lives in Asmat, after the president gave a speech at an event to mark the university`s anniversary on Friday. “Let them check the situation there for themselves and the big problems that we are facing in regions, especially Papua,” Jokowi noted.

He added that he had no problem with the student`s action.

“Such a dynamic is common. He is a young activist. It is something common. I think it is good that there is someone to remind us,” he remarked.

BEM UI has demanded three things from the president.

The first is related to the malnutrition problem in Papua, the second is connected to the idea of naming active police officers as acting governors, and the third is about the student organization, which is considered to limit students` movement.

Jokowi has sent a team to help measles patients, conduct vaccination programs, and prepare measures to deal with the post-outbreak condition. More than 71 children have died due to the measles outbreak in Asmat. The president has also offered to relocate the people of Asmat to enable them to have better access to health facilities. (ant)

N219 aircraft completes 15th test flight BANDUNG - State-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI) conducted another test flight of its N219 aircraft at the Husein Sastanegara International Airport in Bandung, West Java, on Friday. “Today, we conducted the 15th test flight of the N219 aircraft to secure an air worthiness certificate. The certification is a lengthy process, as (the aircraft) must complete 300 hours of test flights to secure it,” PT DI expert Andi Alisjahbana stated.

As of Friday, the N219 aircraft had undergone 17 hours of test flights. During the test flight, the plane, piloted by Esther Gayatri Saleh, took off from the airport at 9 a.m. local time on Friday and successfully landed at around 10 a.m. local time.

One of the important determining factors for any aircraft to be declared airworthy is that it must secure a certificate from the Directorate of Airworthiness and Aircraft Operation of the Indonesian Transportation Ministry, he noted. “In essence, before the aircraft can be put to public service, it must guarantee the security and safety of its passengers,” he remarked.

During the test flight this time, PT DI focused on the capability of the N219 aircraft to perform a flip maneuver of around 10 degrees, he explained. “What we are doing today is to observe the response of its elevator on the rear of the aircraft. It is a kind of tail that is in a vertical and horizontal position,” he stated.

“We test it. There is feather duster on the aircraft`s tail to see whether the air flow is according to specifications. If not, we will improve it,” he noted. He believes the N219 aircraft will be able to complete 300 hours of test flights this year. (ant)

Indonesian police investigate detention of transgender women in Aceh

BANDA ACEH - Indonesia’s national police chief has ordered an investigation into the detention of 12 transgender women in the province of Aceh, officials said on Friday, after reports that they were stripped, beaten and forced to cut their hair before being released without charge. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population but Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, is the only province that enforces Islamic law and outlaws homosexuality.

Religious police and vigilantes in the ultra-conservative province often raid homes and places of work and detain people on suspicion of engaging in homosexual activity.

Police in North Aceh raided hair salons - where transgender people often work - last weekend and briefly detained 12 individuals. Rights activists and media reports said they were forced to cut their hair and were stripped and beaten.

“There were photos circulated that led us to suspect that there had been physical action taken against the suspects,” Misbahul Munauwar, a spokesman for Aceh police, said. “The national police chief has instructed us to investigate those photos and to determine if there was any...procedural or ethical violation.” A national

police spokesman confirmed that police chief Tito Karnavian had ordered the investigation.

Human Rights Watch and other rights groups welcomed the move, which comes amid a rising tide of hostility against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

Police in Aceh and elsewhere have stepped up raids on what they call “gay spas” and “gay sex parties” in recent months, detaining people on charges of violating strict anti-pornography laws. Dozens of protesters on Friday staged an anti-LGBT rally outside a mosque in the provincial capital Banda Aceh.

“We don’t hate gay, bisexual or transgender people.

What we hate is their actions, and if we can prove their actions, they will be punished,” Aceh governor Irwandi Yusuf told the small crowd.

Last year, the provincial and central governments drew international condemnation after authorities in Aceh tried two young men on charges of engaging in gay sex and then publicly caned them - the first such case in the country. Indonesia’s parliament is also drafting revisions to the national criminal code that could ban all consensual sex outside marriage.

The parliamentary commission drawing up recommendations has still to finalise its proposals, but a draft seen by Reuters includes measures to criminalise extramarital sex, same-sex relations and co-habitation, all of which were previously unregulated. (rtr)

JOB GROWTH SEEN SLOWING Economists polled by Reuters had forecast nonfarm payrolls rising by 180,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate unchanged at 4.1 percent. January’s jobs gains were above the monthly average of 192,000 over the past three months. The economy needs to create 75,000 to 100,000 jobs per month to keep up with growth in the working-age population.

January marked the first full year of employment data under the Trump administration. Job growth averaged 176,000 per month

under the current government, compared to 208,300 during last year of the Obama administration.

Job growth is expected to slow this year as the labor market hits full employment.

Companies are already reporting difficulties finding qualified workers, which economists say will force some to significantly raise wages as they compete for scarce labor. Wage growth last month came as increases in the minimum wage came into effect in 18 states in January. Wages probably also got a lift from the tax cut. Companies like Starbucks Corp and FedEx Corp have said they will use some of the savings from lower taxes to boost wages for workers.

Further gains are expected in February when Walmart raises entry-level wages for hourly employees at its U.S. stores. Annual wage growth is now close to the 3 percent that economists say is needed to push inflation towards the Fed’s 2 percent target.

But the road to faster wage growth remains long. The year-on-year rise in average hourly earnings for production and non-supervisory workers was stuck at 2.4 percent in January.

A broader measure of unemployment, which includes people who want to work but have given up searching and those working part time because they cannot find full-time employment, rose one-tenth of a percentage point to 8.2 percent in January. The unemployment rate was unchanged at a 17-year low of 4.1 percent. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent in January to $26.74, building on December’s solid 0.4 percent gain.

That boosted the year-on-year increase in average hourly earnings to 2.9 percent, the largest rise since June 2009, from 2.7 percent in December. Workers, however, put in fewer hours last month likely because of bitterly cold weather. The average workweek fell to 34.3 hours, the shortest in four months, from 34.5 hours in December.

The robust employment report underscored the strong momentum in the economy, raising the possibility that the Federal Reserve could be a bit more aggressive in raising interest rates this year. The U.S. central bank has forecast three rate increases this year after raising borrowing costs three times in 2017.

“The acceleration in average hourly earnings growth punches a hole in the narrative that wage growth remains lackluster,” said Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West in San Francisco. “The Goldilocks view of inflation is being sorely challenged right now.”

Fed officials on Wednesday expressed optimism that inflation will rise toward the central bank’s target this year. Policymakers, who voted to keep interest rates unchanged, described the labor market as having “continued to strengthen,” and economic activity as “rising at a solid rate.”

U.S. financial markets have priced in a rate hike in March. Prices for U.S. Treasuries fell, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note hitting a four-year high as investors worried about high inflation. The dollar rose against a basket of currencies on the data while U.S. stocks were trading lower.

The unemployment rate dropped seventenths of a percentage point in 2017 and economists expect it to hit 3.5 percent by the end of the year. Economists say job gains are being driven by buoyant domestic and global demand. Entil, a Tempting Tiny Serving

Have you ever tasted entil? This Balinese traditional serving resembles lontong and looks simple, but has a tempting flavor. It is flat of four rectangular like a pillow and has a green color because it is wrapped in bamboo leaves (telengidi). It offers very distinctive aroma, so that it can arouse the appetite. Eat entil is enough with chili (Balinese complete seasoning and shrimp paste condiment). However, it will be better when enjoyed with urap vegetables.

Entil is wrapped with bamboo leaves that can make entil taste more delicious. Green color of bamboo leaves seep into the rice when cooked, resulting in a greenish color. Indeed, the making of this serving takes a long

time, especially when boiling. The longer boils this entil, the longer it will last and not quickly turn stale.

Entil is famous in the area of Pupuan, while it is also made at Tengkudak, Penebel, Tabanan district.

Moreover, this simple traditional food can be easily found in traditional stalls at villages. It also often becomes a menu of culinary events in the festival held by the government of Tabanan. At Tanah Lot Kreatifood Festival, for instance, this menu is favored by visitors.

The serving includes a pack of entil, and then it is sprinkled with coconut sauce and fried condiment.

Initially, she helped her parents and then became the next heir. “Entil has existed for a long time and no one knows for sure when and where it started. We make this entil from generation to generation until now. Entil remains to have a lot of demand,” said Sutiani.

According to Sutiani, entil is

usually presented on particular days, such as Nyepi or Day of Silence where the Hindus perform catur brata penyepian or four abstinences where people will not turn or light fire, not work, not travel and not enjoy any entertainment, so food stock is needed. On that account, entil is chosen because it is durable and not easily stale. “Now, entil is widely sold in traditional markets and stalls, like what I do,” she said.

Entil is made from rice and grated coconut and then wrapped in bamboo leaves tied with rope. In the past, people used bamboo or coconut bark ropes, but now many people prefer to use plastic ropes. Meanwhile, the seasoning in use includes base

genep (complete seasoning), such as onion, garlic, chili, ginger, turmeric, aromatic ginger, galangal and other spices. It is also coupled with grated coconut to make urap seasoning.

How to make it? First of all, soak rice for overnight. The rice is then put on a leaf then wrap with bamboo leaves and tied with bamboo string.

Buleleng threatened by floods, landslides and tidal waves yearly

SINGARAJA — The topography of Buleleng known as nyegara gunung (bordering with sea and mountain—Ed) seems unavoidable from the threat of natural disasters. This fact cannot be denied because the upstream of Buleleng is bordered with hills where landslides potentially occur. In addition, the hill areas are prone to be hit by tornado.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Buleleng is bordered with the sea from east to west.

The areas located on the northern coastlines are prone to tidal wave disasters, seawater floods and even tsunami waves to threaten the coastal areas of Buleleng.

On this condition, local government through Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) prior to entering the monsoon incessantly monitors and establishes coordination with sub-districts forwarded to village government. This coordination is to build cooperation in educating citizens to be aware of the possibility of natural disasters in the region. In addition, the community is also ‘stimulated’ so as to get motivated to always care and ready to participate in handling the condition recovery when the region is hit by natural disasters.

Before drafting the early anticipatory efforts, BPBD has long been compiling maps of disaster-prone areas. Broadly speaking, the flood disaster has the potential to occur in Singaraja town area. Early this year, previously the urban areas mapped out to be prone to flood was hit by flash flood causing damages to infrastructure, schools and houses.

Apart from urban areas, the flash flood also potentially occurs to rural areas as in the subdistrict of Sawan, Banjar, Seririt and Gerokgak. This flash flood has repeatedly hit the region such as in Banyupoh village and Tinga-Tinga, Grokgak subdistrict. The latest flash flood hit the Dencarik village and Baktiseraga village in Buleleng.

fore entering rainy season the BPBD has promoted mitigation of watershed and irrigation in several locations. It is important because the experience of flash flood disasters in previous years was triggered by clogged watershed or irrigation channel by waste, or the upstream agricultural activities replaced the waterabsorption buffer plants with seasonal plants that do not optimally absorb during the rains.

When it rains, erosion is ubiquitous and carries wood or tree branches. When its watershed streams are narrow, automatically the water will be restrained and results in water overflow to the occurrence of flash flood.

The areas being prone to landslide disaster are dominated by villages in hilly areas starting from Tejakula subdistrict, upper part of Kubutambahan, upper part of Sawan, Sukasada, upper part of Banjar and Busungbiu.

Landslide disaster in the disaster-prone areas earlier this year occurred again at Munduk, Pedawa, Gobleg and Gesing village. Meanwhile, tidal disaster-prone areas and seawater floods are potentially experienced by people living near the coast from east to west of Buleleng. Tidal disasters usually occur during January to February.

DENPASAR — The price hike of dry unhulled grain (GKP) at farmer level since May 2017 is not in line with the farmer’s exchange rate (NTP) of Bali province. The exchange rate in January 2018 fell 0.43 percent from 103.93 in December 2017 to 103.48.

Head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, said that actually the price index received by farmers recorded an increase of 0.39 percent. However, in fact the index paid by farmers is greater than the index received by farmers namely 0.82 percent,” he explained.

The price index received by farmers from agriculture reached 131.14, showing an increase of 0.39 percent compared to December 2017 that amounted to 130.64.

farmers in January 2018 recorded an increase of higher than the index received by farmers namely 0.82 percent from 125.70 in December 2017 to 126.73.

Maldives delay in freeing opposition leaders fuels domestic, international concern

MALE - As domestic and international pressure mounts, the Maldives has delayed complying with a Supreme Court order for the immediate release and new trials of nine opposition leaders, freeing them to contest presidential elections this year.

The Indian Ocean nation has been mired in political unrest since Mohamed Nasheed, its first democratically elected leader, was ousted in 2012. He has been in exile on medical grounds from a 13-year jail sentence on terrorism charges.

The Supreme Court on Thursday said the trials of Nasheed and eight others, many of whom had challenged President Abdulla Yameen, had violated the constitution and international law.

It found that prosecutors and judges were unduly influenced “to conduct politically motivated investigations” against them.

On Friday, Attorney General Mohamed Anil said he had held discussions with Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed over the administration’s concerns about releasing individuals whose offences ranged from terrorism to corruption and treason.

“The prosecutor general is currently in the process of examining the cases to determine the best way to proceed with the implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling, and the prosecutor general will present recommendations at the earliest,” the government said in a statement.

The unexpected ruling frees opposition leaders to run against Yameen in the presidential poll expected to be completed by Oc-

tober. The terrorism convictions would normally bar them from competing unless they received presidential pardons after completing a third of their jail terms.

The joint opposition of the Maldives expressed concern over Yameen’s refusal to abide by the order.

“We are deeply fearful that the government’s refusal to implement the Supreme Court order could escalate to unrest and incite violence across the country,” it said in a statement.

Hundreds of opposition supporters chanted slogans such as “Enforce the Supreme Court ruling,” and “Defend the constitution,” in a Friday night rally outside the opposition MDP campaign center in Male, the capital.

The United Nations, the United States, the European Union and India also urged Yameen’s government to follow the ruling.

ROME - An Italian man opened fire on African migrants in the central city of Macerata on Saturday, injuring six people before he was captured, in what police said was a racially motivated attack.

The shootings happened just days after a Nigerian migrant was arrested in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Italian woman, whose dismembered body was discovered stuffed into two suitcases near Macerata.

Police named the suspected shooter as Luca Traini, 28, and said he had an Italian flag draped over his shoulders when he was seized in the street by armed police. Onlookers said he made a fascist salute before being handcuffed.

“He drove around in his car and when he saw any black people he

shot them,” Marcello Mancini, a Macerata resident, told Reuters television. Police said one of the six victims was seriously hurt and needed surgery, but gave no further details.

Traini also fired shots at the offices of the ruling centre-left Democratic Party (PD) in Macerata, but did not injure anyone there. The PD said he had stood as a candidate for the rightist Northern League at local elections last year but had not received any votes.

The League backs fiercely anti-immigrant policies and is part of ex-prime Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right alliance that is leading in the polls ahead of a March 4 national election.

League leader Matteo Salvini distanced himself from the shoot-

ing, but blamed mass immigration for the tensions.

“I can’t wait to get into government to restore security, social justice and serenity to Italy,” he told reporters.

PD leader Matteo Renzi called for calm.

Ancient statues return to Lebanon as war on smuggling intensifies

BEIRUT - Ancient sculptures that were missing for decades after being stolen during Lebanon’s civil war are to go on display in Beirut thanks to a global fight against antiquities smuggling that has been stepped up since wartime looting in Iraq and Syria.

The five marble statues were among a haul of hundreds that Lebanese militiamen took from a storehouse in 1981, some of which are only now emerging onto the shadowy global arts market and even into the world’s greatest museums.

Three of the five sculptures unveiled at a ceremony in Beirut on Friday were spotted in New York’s Metropolitan Museum - where they were on loan from a private collector - by a curator who identified them using Art Loss, an online register of stolen artefacts.

non was Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Matthew Bogdanos, an Iraq war veteran who led the investigation into looting at the national museum in Baghdad during the chaos of the U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.

Outrage at looting there and in Syria, and fear that art trafficking was funding militant groups, has driven countries to work together to stop it, said Bogdanos, who was in Beirut on Friday for a ceremony to unveil the statues.

“It has resulted in greater attention, greater scrutiny and greater resources, all of which we desperately need in order to fight such an entrenched global network,” Bogdanos, whose office has recovered thousands of stolen antiquities in recent years, told Reuters at the ceremony at Beirut’s National Museum.

One of the other statues was identified last year by a gallery in

Germany, which noticed it on the Art Loss register. The fifth was seized in a container entering Lebanon’s port of Tripoli last month.

Archaeologists excavated all the statues in the 1960s and 1970s in Sidon at the Temple of Eshmoun, a god of healing.

They were carved between the sixth and fourth centuries BC, when Lebanon’s Phoenician civilisation was ruled by the Persian empire but influenced by Greek art and culture.

One of the statues, a bull’s head, was from the capital of a pillar in the temple. The other statues, of youths and children, included one dedicated to the temple by fond relatives in thanks for the recovery from illness of their child.

“HERITAGE IS NOT FOR SALE”

They will be added to the Beirut museum’s display of Eshmoun sculptures, which include a com-

plete capital with bull heads facing in each direction and marble statues of babies and children.

Only a handful of more than 500 Eshmoun statues pillaged from the storerooms of Byblos citadel in 1981 have been identified and returned to Lebanon.

“We will put every resource that we have to recover any piece wherever it is and whoever thinks it belongs to him. Our heritage is not for sale,” said Lebanon’s Culture Minister Ghattas Khoury.

Like these pieces, items smuggled from Iraq and Syria may stay hidden for decades before traffickers start selling them to collectors.

“It is rare that we would see anything on the market for 10 or 20 or even 30 years, because they do have the patience. They stockpile these pieces,” said Bogdanos.

The international nature of the trade makes it hard to trace them.

“If you would follow the pieces

which we have here, there was a kind of ping-pong between Europe, America, Europe again ... it’s a globalisation,” said Rolf Stucky, a Swiss archaeologist who registered many of the looted Eshmoun statues on Art Loss in the 1990s, allowing them to be identified now.

But countries now share information and help train authorities, both in the main markets for stolen artefacts and in the regions from which they come.

Lebanon itself has stopped many foreign pieces from being shipped through Beirut, said Ghattas. As a neighbour of Syria, it is a major route for items looted from there.

“In many respects (smugglers) didn’t have to be smart in their trafficking behaviour simply because no countries were cooperating enough, were devoting enough resources to stop it,” said Bogdanos.

Tidal waves erodes 25 meters of road at Pengastulan

SINGARAJA — Neighborhood road at Kauman hamlet, Pengastulan, Seririt, was affected by tidal waves. As a result, about 25 meters of paving block on the road gets eroded. In addition to eroding the paving blocks, seawater in this coastal area had soaked the home yard of residents in the local village.

As seen at the scene on Wednesday (Jan. 31), the neighborhood road has just been completed by the local village. It is located right on the edge of the beach and can only be passed by motorcycles. The road itself has been protected by beach-safety concrete. However, the coastal area has begun to be hit by tidal waves from Monday (Jan. 29). Inevitably, seawater eroded the paving blocks on this road section. The paving blocks came off because the concrete functioned to strengthen them has been destroyed by the hard scouring of the waves.

Following the incident, village officials have come down to record the losses caused by the natural disasters. To avoid difficulties, the damaged road section is temporarily compacted with sand.

Meanwhile, the released paving blocks it stacked on the roadside.

To block the seawater, the people directly adjacent to the road have to install an embankment with a sandbags on the roadside.

Headman of Pengastulan, I Ketut Yasa, when contacted last Wednesday justified the incident. He said the road is directly located on the beach and adjacent to the coastal breakwater having been installed several years earlier. Since the waves are malignant enough to crash, the seawater also eroded the paving blocks installed. Temporarily, the road damage has been recorded and reported to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). “It’s true the tidal waves in our area have damaged the paving blocks installation and preliminary data shows the damage is along 25 meters. The road is still passable and the damage has been reported to BPBD through the subdistrict government,” he said.

Yasa added that since the tidal waves hit the residents’ houses along the coast, the condition is still safe and no damages were reported. However, he admitted when the tidal waves occurred, seawater flooded the local people’s home yard. Fortunately, the incident did not cause any damages or disrupt people’s activities.

“So far, there is no house damage, but the pounding waves reached people’s home yard. We have appealed to people to be alert because this extreme weather can trigger tidal waves any time,” he added. (kmb38)

He continued that if only relying on the acreage of the orchard having been registered, the mangosteen export will be very small reaching 200 tons of mangosteen. This measure is meant to maintain the quality of mangosteen of Bali production in export markets,” he said.

Tesan, who also serves as Chairman of the Indonesia Mangosteen Association, also explained that continuation of the FGD will be followed up with mangosteen tree data collection that will be submitted for registration. On the other hand, to strengthen the position of packing house in Bali, his association will maximize harvest wards at each village, collectors, and farmer groups. Later, the ward will be connected to the Quarantine Center to get a search number.

He targeted to conduct a certification of mangosteen orchard for an area of 600 hectares, so that there are a total of 700 hectares registered in 2018. Biopore can help reduce flooding

DENPASAR - Biopores are one way to have rainwater absorbed back into the ground instead of flowing right back out to sea. They help restre well water and also reduce flooding. However with heavy rainfall biopores are cannot absorb enough water at once to prevent flooding.

Academic and spatial planner, Prof. I Putu Rumawan Salain, explained that biopores work best in areas where the ground water is deep however places where groundwater is relatively hear the surface like in Renon, Sanglah, Sidakarya and other areas in the South, biopores do not work very well.

Bipores here are made with depths of just 50cm, so not a lot of water is absorbed. Areas Norht of Panjer are more suitable for biopores. “When there is already water 1 meter down, creating one meter deep biopores is not very useful as the water just flows back out”, he said on Friday (Feb. 2).

Denpasar is part of Bali’s lowlands where water flows out to sea from upstream areas. If the water in the upstream rivers is not handled well, then more water arrives downstream. It is therefor important for upstream areas to be equipped with biopores to absorb more water.

The standard distance between biopores is a minimum of 50 cm but ideally 1 meter apart. Biopores can also serve as composts to make fertilizer but they do require maintenance.

Biopore can be made using paralon pipe or even with used paint cans that are wider. Wider biopores mean more water can enter. “Paragon paint cans can have there bottoms removed to make larger biopores than the ones made using paralon pipe. With a wider opening, the distance between the biopores should also be farther”, explained Prof. Salain.

Biopores should be created in areas with heavy rainfall at strategic topographical points so that water does not pool but flows into the biopore. “So it is good to place biopores wherever water tends to pool. Renon is one such area, however because the groundwater is just 1 meter from the surface, it is hard to absorb much more water here”, he added.

According to Prof Salain, public facilities such as Tiara Dewata, Lotte Mart and Badung Market are suitable places to install biopores. “That way the entire surface area is not covered in concrete which does not absorb water”, he said, adding that surfaces like concrete should be designed to have water flow towards biopores, or absorption wells. To reduce flooding in large public areas like schools, offices and

housing complexes, biopores should be created, emphasized Prof. Salain.

This urban planner also said that he hopes to see building permit regulations include the obligation to create biopores when appropriate. For a ‘type 21” house, with a land area of

60 square meters or more should have at least three biopores.

For land areas of more than 400 square meters, there should also be absorption wells. Catchment wells are another way to reduce the amount of water that pools on the surface of larger areas. (kmb42)

Kuta, Legian and Seminyak most vulnerable to floods MANGUPURA - The increasingly dense population growth is directly proportional to the development of settlements especially in the area of Badung, especially Kuta and South Kuta. Due to the increasing number of development, water absorption area also decreases. Every rainy season, the densely populated areas have been always the ‘target’ of rainwater puddles.

Based on the data compiled by Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Badung, a total of 15 points are flood-prone areas in Badung. It spreads from South Badung to North Badung. Among them, there are Tanjung Benoa, Benoa, Kedonganan, Tuban, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, South Kerobokan, Kerobokan, Dalung, Kapal, Penarungan, Darmasaba and Carang sari. The most vulnerable to floods are Kuta, Legian and Seminyak.

Meanwhile, in Abiansemal there are 4 villages namely Ayunan, Bongkasa, Sangeh and Bongkasa Pertiwi; then in Mengwi there is one area prone to landslides, namely in Kuwum; and South Kuta includes Kutuh, Benoa, Pecatu and Ungasan. “In South Kuta, there is also limestone cliff that is also prone to landslides,” he explained.

LOS ANGELES - Actor Uma Thurman has accused movie producer Harvey Weinstein of sexually assaulting her at a London hotel after they worked together on the 1994 hit film “Pulp Fiction.”

In a New York Times article on Saturday by columnist Maureen Dowd, Thurman broke her silence after saying in October that she would wait to speak out about inappropriate behavior in the workplace because she did not want to say anything in anger.

Thurman became the latest of more than 70 women who have accused 65-year-old Weinstein of sexual misconduct, including rape. Weinstein’s lawyer said on Saturday that the producer had immediately apologized to Thurman for making an “awkward pass” at her 25 years ago, but that her claims about being physically assaulted were untrue.

In the Times article, Thurman, 47, said Weinstein pushed her down when she met him in his suite at London’s Savoy Hotel.

“He tried to shove himself on me. He tried to expose himself. He did all kinds of unpleasant things. But he didn’t actually put his back into it and force me,” she told the newspaper.

Asked for further comment by Reuters, a representative for Thurman said the Times article spoke for itself.

Weinstein’s lawyer, Ben Brafman, said the producer was stunned and saddened by what he considered false allegations from someone he worked closely with for more than two decades.

“Mr Weinstein acknowledges making an awkward pass at Ms Thurman 25 years ago which he regrets and immediately apologized for,” Brafman said in a statement.

“Why Ms Thurman would wait 25 years to publicly discuss this incident and why according to Weinstein, she would embellish what really happened to include false accusations of attempted physical assault is a mystery to Weinstein and his attorneys.”

Brafman said Thurman’s statements to the Times were being carefully examined and investigated “before deciding whether any legal action against her would be appropriate.” (rtr)

MINNEAPOLIS - Justin Timberlake caused a national controversy when he performed the Super Bowl halftime show with Janet Jackson in 2004, and the pop singer said on Thursday not to expect his partner in crime to appear this time around.

Timberlake on Sunday will return to America’s biggest stage 14 years after a “wardrobe malfunction” overshadowed his last gig at the National Football League’s championship game.

“To be honest I had a ton of grand ideas about special guests. There’s a whole list. I think Vegas has a lot of odds on it. From NSYNC to (Jay-Z) to Chris Stapleton to Janet,” Timberlake told a news conference in Minneapolis.

“But this year... my band, the Tennessee Kids, I feel like they are my special guests and I am excited this year to rock the stage and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Timberlake infamously ripped off part of Jackson’s garment during their halftime show performance in Houston and briefly bared her breast.

The incident coined the phrase “wardrobe malfunction.”

The Parents Television Council published an open letter to Timberlake on Thursday asking the 10-times Grammy winner to keep his performance, which is estimated to draw more than 100 million viewers, friendly and safe for children.

“The fallout of your performance during Super Bowl XXXVIII has left an indelible mark. You really threw us – and millions of parents who were watching with their kids,” the group wrote.

“The now-infamous wardrobe malfunction was the biggest news story for weeks, even at a time when the nation had launched into war in Iraq.”

The letter continued, “We ask you to keep the halftime show friendly and safe for the children watching, and who may be hoping to emulate you one day.” (rtr)

Four workers killed in railway project crane collapse in Matraram Here are ten workplace accidents occurred in the public and private construction projects:

1. On August 4, 2017, two workers of Light Rail Transit (LRT) construction project in Palembang fell to deaths from an LRT pole.

2. On September 22, 2017, the bridge at the Bocimi (Bogor-Ciawi-Sukabumi) toll road construction in Bogor District collapsed and killed one worker and injured two others.

3. On October 26, 2017, a crane at the Bogor Outer Ringroad (BORR) toll road construction fell on a public highway.

4. On October 29, 2017, a girder at the Pasuruan-Probolinggo (Paspro) toll road construction collapsed and killed one of the workers.

5. On November 15, 2017, a concrete of the LRT construction project fell on a car at Jalan MT Haryono in East Jakarta.

6. On November 16, 2017, a crane that carried a variable message sign was involved in an accident at the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll road near the Elevate Jakarta-Cikampek Toll road project.

7. On December 9, 2017, two girder rods of the Ciputrapinggan Bridge construction collapsed.

8. On December 26, 2017, a ceiling at the Pakubuwono Spring Apartment collapsed.

9. On December 30, 2017, a girder rod collapsed at the Pemalang-Batang toll road construction site.

10. On January 4, 2018, six massive girder rods collapsed at the Depok - Antasari toll road project after the rods were accidentally knocked over by an excavator.

JAKARTA - A crane collapse early on Sunday at the construction site of a railway track in Matraman, East Jakarta, has killed four workers and injured five others. The crane, which was used to lift rail pads for a four-track railway project that will link Jakarta to Cikarang, collapsed at 5 a.m. near Jl. Matraman Raya.

The deceased were taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta, while the injured were taken to Premier Hospital in East Jakarta.

The East Jakarta Police reported that five workers were operating the crane.

The police seized the helmets, vests, shoes and ID cards of the victims as evidence.

Yadi, a resident, said the crane had fallen at the site several times, but it was only this morning that it had taken lives. “The crane has collapsed several times, once it fell on a house,” he said, as quoted by

wartakotalive.com.

Last month, a box girder at the construction site of the light rapid transit (LRT) project in Utan Kayu, East Jakarta, fell in the early hours of the morning, injuring five workers.
