‘Miss Peregrine’ bests ‘Deepwater Horizon’ at box office

NEW YORK — In a box-office rarity, three acclaimed, original films from studios opened in theaters over the weekend. Only one caught on. Tim Burton’s latest fantastical oddity, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” debuted with $28.5 million, leading North America ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Peter Berg’s well-reviewed disaster movie “Deepwater Horizon,” about the 2010 oil rig explosion, however, failed to tap North American moviegoers, opening with an estimated $20.6 million. And Disney’s uplifting chess prodigy tale “Queen of Katwe,” starring David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o, brought in a dismal $2.6 million in its national expansion.

Originality, that often lamented missing ingredient in studio products, can lead to box office success, just as it can disappointment. For 20th Century Fox, the draw of “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” was predicated on the idiosyncrasy of Burton funneled into an accessible tale, adapted from Ransom Rigg’s popular young-adult novel.

“It validates the whole notion of why we made this film, which is something that’s very original and creative,” said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at Fox. “At least I feel that that’s what audiences are looking for. There’s some fatigue with the same old, same old. And if there’s anything this movie isn’t, it’s that.”

The film cost $110 million to make, meaning it will need a strong performance overseas to be profitable. It started out with $36.5 million in 59 markets.

Regardless, it’s a comeback of sorts for Burton at the box office. It’s his best opening since 2012’s lackluster “Dark Shadows.”

Lionsgate’s “Deepwater Horizon,” starring Mark Wahlberg, also cost at least $110 million to make, yet it only managed $20.6 million in its debut. The film,

TABANAN - Throughout the year 2016, there were four cases of maternal mortality. All the cases happened due to heart failure after giving birth through cesarean section.

To avoid similar cases, the Tabanan Health Agency requires all the health services to report the childbirth cases by cesarean section and monitor the mother.

Section Head of the Maternal, Child and Family Planning Services at the Tabanan Health Agency, I Gusti Ayu Seputri Widhiyani, said on Sunday (Oct. 2) that the health agency has provided mass learning about the cases of maternal and perinatal mortality in Tabanan. The learning is followed by all medical personnel in the health care services at the health

centers as well as government and private hospitals. The lessons given are in appropriate with the case assessment results done by the experts from both internal and external team of the Sanglah Hospital and the Bali Health Agency.

“We will disseminate the results of this study to all health centers represented by the head of the health centers and midwives coordinator, all hospitals in Tabanan, health clinics and midwife practices as learning so that such similar cases will not happen again,” she said.

According to Serpi, in 2016 there were four cases of maternal mortality due to heart failure. All of these deaths occurred on the way because it happened suddenly and was not predicted in advance.

“This heart problem is experienced by mothers giving birth via cesarean section. It is not predictable because the mother had no previ-

ous history on alarming disease,”’ explained Serpi. Symptoms of heart failure causing the death, added Serpi, occurred in women after surgery on day 10 to day 21.

To prevent the case from happening again, the Tabanan Health Agency required all the health services to intervene in order to immediately refer the mother giving birth by surgery or post surgery with shortness although it is only a bit. Hospitals are required to handle it in multidisciplinary manner and examine completely with the help of laboratory and X-rays. “So, never decide in a hurry if there are no problems,” said Serpi.

Some fishermen met on Sunday (Oct. 2) admitted that they rarely catch sardine like the other months in the waters of the South Sea. “We have been sailing around, but hard to get the fish. Occasionally our fish basket is empty,” said Apik, a crew of purse seine at Pengambengan.

To increase the income, he and a number of other crews seek another job in mainland. Some of them became timber porter and construction worker. In the meantime, this sardine famine is predicted to be happening until March 2017. The weather condition in the Bali Sea is unfavorable for habitat of catch fish as the impact of La Nina.

The Research Institute for Marine Observations (SEACORM) released data analysis that the catch of sardine during the El Nino last year was quite a lot, while in the current La Nina the

catch of fishermen decreased and even disappeared from the waters of Bali.

Widodo S. Pranowo, from the Center for Research and Development of Marine and Coastal Resources explained the impact of La Nina on the catch depends on the strength of the weather anomalies whose peak is predicted to happen in October to November. This condition also happens in other fishing areas.

The water of tuna producer also experiences a shift.

The Head of the Research and Marine Observations (SEACORM), Nyoman Radiaka, told reporters that the fish movement is also affected by climate change. It can disappear at particular habitat but then changed by other fish species rarely encountered before. Thus, it becomes a challenge for the SEACORM to provide a map of fishing. (kmb26)

Mission Complete: Rosetta says farewell with comet crash-landing

BERLIN - The Rosetta spacecraft ended its historic mission on Friday, crashing on the surface of the dusty, icy comet it has spent 12 years chasing in a hunt that has provided insight into the early days of the solar system and captured the public’s imagination.

The spacecraft has stalked comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko across more than 6 billion km (3.7 billion miles) of space, collecting a treasure trove of information on comets that will keep scientists busy for the next decade.

Scientists in the European Space Agency control centre in Darmstadt, Germany, clapped and hugged as confirmation of the end of the mission came at 1119 GMT. Rosetta completed its free-fall descent at the speed of a sedate walk, joining the probe Philae, which landed on the comet in November 2014 in what was considered a remarkable feat of precision space travel.

“Thank you Rosetta,” ESA director general Jan Woerner said on Twitter.

He was among some 300 people who had also gathered before dawn at a conference room at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, to watch a live webcast as Rosetta’s signal disappeared from monitors, simultaneously with the team in Germany.

“It was a good ending,” Klaus Schiling, who worked on mission

planning for Rosetta 27 years ago with prime contractor Airbus , told Reuters at the Mexico space conference. “There were so many ups and downs with this mission.”

PLANET FORMATION The mission managed several historic firsts, such as getting a spacecraft into orbit around a comet and the unprecedented landing of a probe on the surface. A handful of previous spacecraft had snapped pictures and collected data as they flew past their targets.

But, dashing hopes for more discoveries, Philae, the 100 kg (220 lb) probe, bounced several times on landing before getting stuck against a cliff wall, leaving it unable to perform any more experiments beyond its first three days on the comet after its solarpowered batteries ran out.

Rosetta’s cameras located Philae’s resting place just a few weeks ago.

The ESA is ending the mission because 67P is racing toward the outer solar system, out of range for the solar-powered spacecraft.

Before reaching the surface and shutting down, Rosetta’s instruments and camera relayed back data and images, giving scientists insight into the structure of the comet.

That data will reveal information on the side walls of the comet, crucial to understanding how they

are formed, plus on large 100metre (300 foot) wide pits, which scientists believe are key to how the comet releases gas and dust as it is warmed by the sun.

Daniel Brown, an astronomy expert at Nottingham Trent University, said the images sent back from the Rosetta mission were “as powerful as Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon”.

Data collected by Rosetta and Philae is already helping scientists better understand how the Earth and other planets formed.

For example, scientists now believe that asteroids, not comets were primarily responsible for delivering water to Earth and other planets in the inner solar system, possibly setting the stage for life. (rtr)

ATLANTA — Authorities say a rare tree frog — the last known living member of the species in captivity — has died at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc. com/2d8qTPQ) that the dead Rabbs’ fringe-limbed tree frog was found dead in its enclosure during a routine daily inspection on Monday.

Workers at the garden had nicknamed the male amphibian “Toughie.” It was estimated to be about 12 years old when it died.

In 2005 the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Zoo Atlanta and Southern Illinois University sent a team of scientists to Panama to collect live animals before chytrid disease struck the area.

Among the frogs they brought back to Atlanta was a species of tree frogs (Ecnomiohyla rabborum) new to science, the Rabbs’ frog, the Atlanta newspaper reported. It was identified in 2005 by Zoo Atlanta herpetology

curator Joseph Mendelson, and later named for conservationists George and Mary Rabb. The disease eventually arrived in Panama, and many of the frogs disappeared.

In 2008 the botanical garden purchased and outfitted a climate-controlled facility known as the Frog Pod, designed to house the Rabb’s tree frog and other rare amphibians in complete isolation from each other, the Journal-Constitution reported. That’s where the Rabbs’ frog spent the last eight years of its 11-plus year lifespan.

“Science had a very short window to learn about the species in the wild before this disease struck the only known locality for the frog and the species vanished,” said Mary Pat Matheson, president and CEO of the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

After long dormant, Tanah Ampo harbor tested

AMLAPURA - After being dormant for long time, the Tanah Ampo harbor at Manggis, Karangasem, was finally tested by the Director General of Land Transportation, Ministry of Transportation and other related parties, Friday (Sep. 30). The testing process tried to uncover public controversy frequently doubting the pier’s compatibility for ship docking. In general, the testing process took place smoothly. However, the complete results of the testing will be issued on Monday (Oct. 3).

Testing process involved the experts from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the University of Indonesia (UI) and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing Affairs, while the Bali House of Representatives, the Bali Tourism Office and the Bali Transportation Agency, Benoa Harbor Authority and KSOP Padangbai were also present at the location. The harbor testing process did not use cruise ship, but the Mizan motor vessel, a special ship intended for the testing process. This ship has a length of 43 meters while the width is five meters, and the testing process took place for four times.

The Head of the Karangasem Transportation Agency, Wayan Sutapa, said that the testing process is done by independent parties in order to get neutral results. It implemented accelerometer technology.

Many aspects were tested such as the physical condition of the pier, the depth of surrounding sea and the waves, mooring process, the weather as well as the collision between the ship and the pier. “In general, the testing process seems to be going on smoothly, and when accidentally slammed with the pier there are no to significant vibrations,” said Sutapa.

This testing was carried out to prove the assessment of many parties regarding this pier. So far, many parties perceive if the pier is not feasible to operate. On the other hand, the construction of this

pier has spent a large amount of budget and should be helpful for the community. However, seeing the testing results on Friday, Sutapa is optimistic if the Tanah Ampo harbor can be operated properly. At least, this harbor, according to him, can serve ships with a maximum length of 150 meters. After seeing the interim results of this testing process, the Benoa Harbor Authority, said Sutapa, has given green light so that small cruise ships with a maximum length of 150 meters and below can be directed to moor at the Tanah Ampo Harbor, Karangasem.

Similar opinion was also stated by the Head of the KSOP Padangbai, I Ketut Gede Sudarma. If the official results declared that Tanah Ampo Harbor is really feasible, the Benoa Harbor Authority, he said, already agreed to establish cooperation in order that small cruise ships could be directed to moor at this harbor. Other than small-sized cruises, later on the speed boats normally operate at traditional harbor of Padangbai Port-Gili Trawangan will also be directed to operate at the Tanah Ampo Harbor. “However, the crossing to Nusa Penida remains to use Padangbai traditional harbor.

Both harbors can still operate,” said Sudarma.

For continuation of the development, detailed engineering design (DED) has been prepared since last year to develop the existing harbor. Batur geopark passes in revalidation UNESCO recommends some improvements to Bangli govt BANGLI - Batur geopark was finally declared to pass the revalidation

by UNESCO. This was announced at the closing ceremony of the UNESCO Global Geopark Conference in English Riviera Global Geopark, UK last September. Although it was declared to pass the revalidation and won a green card, the UNESCO remains to give some notes on repair to the government of Bangli, especially in terms of geosite arrangement.

Manager of the Batur Geopark who is also the Regional Secretary of Bangli, Ida Bagus Putra Giri, said on Sunday (Oct. 2) that in the closing ceremony of the UNESCO Global Geopark Conference he attended in English Riviera at Global Geopark UK was stated that the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark was declared to qualify for the revalidation and won the green card of the UNESCO. The green card is valid for four years until the next revalidation in 2020. He said that the success achieved by the Batur Geopark is inseparable from the cohesiveness and teamwork, community and the entire regional apparatus in Bangli.

He described that in the conference was revealed that conceptually the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark will be used as example in the world’s geopark. This happens because every geosite is always integrated with the geology, biology and culture.

“All the achievements are inseparable from the sublime concept of Tri Hita Karana we have, which has been applied to implement the geopark concept,” he explained.

Although it managed to pass in the revalidation and attained green card, Giri Putra acknowledged that UNESCO also provides the government of Bangli with some notes to make improvements. Some of the notes put more emphasis on the arrangement of the geosite.

Militant attack on Indian army base in Kashmir kills one

SRINAGAR - At least six militants attacked an Indian army camp in north Kashmir on Sunday night, killing one border guard and wounding another, two weeks after a similar attack killed 19 Indian soldiers and ratcheted up tensions between India and Pakistan.

The state broadcaster put the death toll at 52, citing regional officials. The opposition also said at least 50 people were killed at the annual festival where some people had chanted slogans against the government and waved a rebel group’s flag.

Sporadic protests have erupted in Oromiya in the last two years, initially sparked by a land row but increasingly turning more broadly against the government. Since late 2015, scores of protesters have been killed in clashes with police.

The developments highlight tensions in the country where the government has delivered stellar economic growth rates but faced criticism from opponents and rights groups that it has reduced political

freedoms.

Thousands of people had gathered for the annual Irreecha festival of thanksgiving in the town of Bishoftu, about 40 km (25 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa.

Crowds chanted “We need freedom” and “We need justice”, preventing community elders, deemed close to the government, from delivering their speeches.

Some protesters waved the red, green and yellow flag of the Oromo Liberation Front, a rebel group branded a terrorist organisation by the government, witnesses said.

When police fired teargas and guns into the air, crowds fled and created a stampede, some of them plunging into a deep ditch.

The witnesses said they saw people dragging out a dozen or more victims, showing no obvious sign of life. Half a dozen people, also motionless, were seen being taken by pick-up truck to a hospital, one witness said.

“As a result of the chaos, lives were lost and several of the injured

were taken to hospital,” the government communications office said in a statement, without giving figures. “Those responsible will face justice.”

Merera Gudina, chairman of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, told Reuters at least 50 people had died, based on details provided by families of the victims.

He said the government tried to use the event to show Oromiya was calm. “But residents still protested,” he said.

The government blames rebel groups and dissidents abroad for stirring up the protests and provoking violence. It dismisses charges that it clamps down on free speech or on its opponents.

Protesters had chanted slogans against the Oromo People’s Democratic Organisation, one of the four regional parties that make up the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front, which has ruled the country for quarter of a century. (rtr)

Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May told her Conservative party’s annual conference on Sunday that she was determined to move on with the process and win the “right deal”, in a move to ease fears inside her party that she may delay the divorce.

Triggering Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty will give Britain a two-year period to clinch one of the most complex deals in Europe since World War Two, and will redefine the country’s ties with its biggest trading partner.

Sterling, having just posted its worst run of quarterly losses since 1984, skidded more than 1 percent against the dollar to $1.2845. That left it less than half a cent away from the 31-year low it plumbed in early July, shortly after the shock June 23 vote to leave the EU. The pound also shed 1 percent

against the euro to hit 87.48 pence, its weakest since August 2013.

“The fact that May has confirmed the timings for the triggering of Article 50 took away any lingering doubts and any lingering supportive elements for the currency, whereby...we could pretend nothing was going on,” said UBS Wealth Management currency strategist Geoffrey Yu. “Markets are fundamentally seeing Brexit as negative for the pound... and now we know it’s definitely going to happen, there’s more short-term or medium-term risk for the currency, but how it’s really going to play out remains to be seen.”

Yu added that sterling’s performance over the coming months would be determined by whether it looked as if Britain would undergo a “hard Brexit” - a total split from

the EU and its single market that some fear could drive an exodus of banks from London.

Forecasts for the pound after the vote were almost universally bleak. A number of major banks predicted a fall to around $1.20, levels not seen since the Plaza Accord’s move to weaken the dollar in the mid-1980s, but it has so far held up better than that, bottoming out in early July at $1.2798.

“From (May’s) comments it appears that next year it is going to be very volatile and the British currency may face a large move on any given day especially when it comes to conceptions and translations about Brexit,” said Think Forex analyst Naeem Aslam.

“A harder Brexit may punish the currency more, and if the economic data starts to fall off the cliff, it may actually push the politicians to strike for a softer Brexit.” (rtr)

JAKARTA — The U.S. owner of a gold and copper mine in eastern Indonesia that is among the largest in the world says its operations have been disrupted by a days-long strike. FreeportMcMoran spokesman Riza Pratama said Monday that open pit mining has stopped and processing of ore has been reduced.

A union official, Frans Okoseray, said about 1,200 workers began their strike on Wednesday to get bigger monthly bonus payments.

The Grasberg mine in Indonesia’s troubled Papua province is the world’s largest gold mine by reserves and one of the largest copper mines.

It has experienced previous violent protests by workers, while activist groups have complained of environmental damage and unfair distribution of profits.

Okoseray said the strikers include heavy equipment operators and truck drivers. He said they want their bonus to be equal to underground mine workers who get a 50 percent bonus each month.

Pratama said underground mining hasn’t been affected. Negotiations were under way among company officials, the workers and their union, he said.(ap)

Indonesian police investigate porn on public video screen

JAKARTA — Police in Indonesia’s capital are investigating the operator of a public video screen after it displayed a porn movie instead of advertising to passing traffic.

Ten people, including employees of the company operating the electronic billboard, have been questioned, Jakarta police spokesman Awi Setyono said Monday.

Police can’t yet name a suspect,

he added.

Twitter in social media-mad Indonesia was abuzz with news of the incident, which occurred not long after Friday prayers last week in the Muslim-majority

country.

Many users posted clips of the billboard as it displayed a Japanese porn movie playing in an internet browser.

Adrian Wiedarta, a manager at PT Transito Adimanjati, which operates the advertising screen, blamed the incident on a hacker who he said seized control of the

system, allowing the porn film to play for about five minutes.

Police assisted by nearby vendors shut off power to the giant video screen as drivers and pedestrians watched the movie.

Setyono said the police’s cybercrime unit has analyzed several computers seized from the company.

Jakarta police chief Muhammad Iriawan said the perpetrator could be charged under either the Electronic Transaction Law, which carries a maximum prison sentence of six years and a fine of 1 billion rupiah ($77,000), or the Pornography Law, which carries a prison sentence of up to 12 years.(ap)

Raja Ampat District Head Abdul Faris Umlati remarked here on Monday that the local government is in need of a ship to serve the route from the district town of Waisai to Misool island.

Therefore, he said the local

government has proposed to the central government to assign a ship to serve the route in a bid to attract tourist visits to Raja Ampat, especially to Misool island.

The local government, according to Umlati, is currently building facilities and infrastructure in Misool island to enable tourists to enjoy the scenery of the island from the top of a rock cliff.

EDINBURGH - Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon accused Theresa May of ignoring Scots over Britain’s exit from the European Union after the British Prime Minister indicated that Scotland will not have a veto.

Sturgeon, whose nationalist party is not ruling out a new Scottish independence vote, said on Twitter that May was “going out of her way to say Scotland’s voice and interests don’t matter”.

“Strange approach from someone who wants to keep (the) UK together,” Sturgeon said.

May, who says she will trigger the process to leave the EU

by March, has said Scotland’s concerns will be taken into account.

When asked directly if Scotland could have a veto over Brexit, she told the BBC: “The United Kingdom will have a position in the negotiations and we, as a United Kingdom government, will be negotiating with the European Union.”

Scotland, one of the United Kingdom’s four constituent parts, overwhelmingly voted to stick with the EU in June but England and Wales voted out.

The United Kingdom’s devolved parliaments could complicate or slow an EU withdrawal as their remit over such a major change is unclear and there is a convention for giving the assemblies a say on matters that concern them.

British government lawyers have argued there is no need to have the agreement of Britain’s devolved parliaments in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales for Brexit. The lawyers argue such assemblies do not have any “competence” over foreign affairs which they say is for the UK government to decide.

A spokesman for the Scottish government said on Sunday that it was unlikely Scotland would approve legislation that does not guarantee access to the EU’s single market for goods and services, but it is not clear what say Scotland will have in the process. (rtr)

Colombians reject deal to end 52-year FARC rebel war

BOGOTA - Colombians narrowly rejected a peace deal with Marxist guerrillas in a referendum on Sunday, plunging the nation into uncertainty and dashing President Juan Manuel Santos’ painstakingly negotiated plan to end the 52-year war.

The surprise victory for the “no” camp poured cold water on international joy, from the White House to the Vatican, at what had seemed to be the end of the longest-running conflict in the Americas.

The “no” camp won by 50.21 percent to 49.78 percent. Voter turnout was only 37 percent, perhaps partly owing to torrential rain through the country.

Both sides in the war immediately sought to reassure the world they would try to revive their peace plan.

Santos, 65, said a ceasefire already negotiated would remain in place. He vowed to sit down on Monday with the victorious “no” camp to discuss the way forward, and send his chief negotiator back to Cuba to meet with FARC rebel leaders.

“I will not give up, I will keep seeking peace until the last day of my term because that is the way to leave a better nation for our children,” said Santos, who

cannot seek re-election when his second term ends in August 2018.

The commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, known by his nom de guerre, Timochenko, gave a similar message from Havana, where peace negotiations have taken place over the last four years. “ T h e FA R C r e i t e r a t e s i t s disposition to use only words as a weapon to build toward the future,” said Timochenko, whose real name is Rodrigo Londono.

“To the Colombian people who dream of peace, count on us, peace will triumph.”

Santos recently said a “no” vote would mean a return to war, and opinion polls had predicted he would win comfortably.

Gumang Hill is not a tourist resort, so there is no such a thing as entrance fee.

The peak of Gumang Hill can be reached just by 40 minutes hiking and climbing from the road on the foot of the hill. On the peak of the hill you can find an old temple that is called Pura Bukit Gumang by the locals.

This temple is guarded by a band of monkeys that not just roaming the temple precinct but also the forest on the slope of the hill, and sometimes they can be found searching for food on the shrines on the foot of the hill.

Yes, the view of sunrise from this hill is superb especially during the dry season (late in April up to early in October) but for the sunrise I recommend you to climb this hill around July and August. Hunting a snapshot of sunrise from the peak of this hill is quite an adventure.

There is no camping site on the peak of the hill so you have to climb the hill early in the morning (around 5 AM) in order to get to the top of the hill right in time for the sunrise. The best spot for capturing the sunrise is on the east side of the peak, right on northeast side of the temple. SEPANG - A fuming Lewis Hamilton was left to wonder whether “the man above or a higher power” was conspiring to deny him a fourth Formula One title after a blown engine forced him to retire while leading Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix.

The Briton’s hopes of leapfrogging fellow Mercedes driver and championship leader Nico Rosberg in the standings were hit when his engine burst into flames with 16 laps remaining.

Hamilton, who entered the race trailing Rosberg by eight points, had been on course for a 50th career win. With Rosberg running fourth after being pushed into a spin that dropped him to the back at the start, Hamilton looked set to regain the overall championship lead.

However, Hamilton’s misfortune not only allowed the German to finish third in the race but also to open up a 23-point lead in the standings.

“Yeah, it feels right now that the man above or a higher power is intervening a little bit,” Hamilton told reporters. “(I will) continue to fight more, for sure but if at the end of the year the higher power does not want me to win... then I will have to accept that.”

Sunday’s engine failure was the latest in a spate of reliability issues that have plagued Hamilton’s 2016 campaign.

Visibly upset, Hamilton also hit out at his own team for his predicament.

“Someone doesn’t want me to win this year. My question is to Mercedes. We have so many engines made but mine are the only ones failing this year,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Gumang Hill KARANGASEM - Gumang Hill is situated in Bugbug village, on the road between Candidasa and Amlapura in Karangasem Regency. This hill overlooks the majestic Mount Agung on the north and Lombok strait on the east. During a favorable weather Mount Rinjani and the island of Lombok can be seen from this hill. Gumang Hill is not a tourist resort, so there is no such a thing as entrance fee.

The peak of Gumang Hill can be reached just by 40 minutes hiking and climbing from the road on the foot of the hill. On the peak of the hill you can find an old temple that is called Pura Bukit Gumang by the locals.

LOS ANGELES - Sacramento Kings point guard Darren Collison has been suspended for eight games after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, the National Basketball Association announced on Sunday.

EDINBURGH - Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon accused Theresa May of ignoring Scots over Britain’s exit from the European Union after the British Prime Minister indicated that Scotland will not have a veto.

Sturgeon, whose nationalist party is not ruling out a new Scottish independence vote, said on Twitter that May was “going out of her way to say Scotland’s voice and interests don’t matter”.

“Strange approach from someone who wants to keep (the) UK together,” Sturgeon said.

May, who says she will trigger the process to leave the EU

by March, has said Scotland’s concerns will be taken into account.

When asked directly if Scotland could have a veto over Brexit, she told the BBC: “The United Kingdom will have a position in the negotiations and we, as a United Kingdom government, will be negotiating with the European Union.”

Scotland, one of the United Kingdom’s four constituent parts, overwhelmingly voted to stick with the EU in June but England and Wales voted out.

The United Kingdom’s devolved parliaments could complicate or slow an EU withdrawal as their remit over such a major change is unclear and there is a convention for giving the assemblies a say on matters that concern them.

British government lawyers have argued there is no need to have the agreement of Britain’s devolved parliaments in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales for Brexit. The lawyers argue such assemblies do not have any “competence” over foreign affairs which they say is for the UK government to decide.

A spokesman for the Scottish government said on Sunday that it was unlikely Scotland would approve legislation that does not guarantee access to the EU’s single market for goods and services, but it is not clear what say Scotland will have in the process. (rtr)

Colombians reject deal to end 52-year FARC rebel war

BOGOTA - Colombians narrowly rejected a peace deal with Marxist guerrillas in a referendum on Sunday, plunging the nation into uncertainty and dashing President Juan Manuel Santos’ painstakingly negotiated plan to end the 52-year war.

The surprise victory for the “no” camp poured cold water on international joy, from the White House to the Vatican, at what had seemed to be the end of the longest-running conflict in the Americas.

The “no” camp won by 50.21 percent to 49.78 percent. Voter turnout was only 37 percent, perhaps partly owing to torrential rain through the country.

Both sides in the war immediately sought to reassure the world they would try to revive their peace plan.

Santos, 65, said a ceasefire already negotiated would remain in place. He vowed to sit down on Monday with the victorious “no” camp to discuss the way forward, and send his chief negotiator back to Cuba to meet with FARC rebel leaders.

“I will not give up, I will keep seeking peace until the last day of my term because that is the way to leave a better nation for our children,” said Santos, who

cannot seek re-election when his second term ends in August 2018.

The commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, known by his nom de guerre, Timochenko, gave a similar message from Havana, where peace negotiations have taken place over the last four years. “ T h e FA R C r e i t e r a t e s i t s disposition to use only words as a weapon to build toward the future,” said Timochenko, whose real name is Rodrigo Londono.

“To the Colombian people who dream of peace, count on us, peace will triumph.”

Santos recently said a “no” vote would mean a return to war, and opinion polls had predicted he would win comfortably.

Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May told her Conservative party’s annual conference on Sunday that she was determined to move on with the process and win the “right deal”, in a move to ease fears inside her party that she may delay the divorce.

Triggering Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty will give Britain a two-year period to clinch one of the most complex deals in Europe since World War Two, and will redefine the country’s ties with its biggest trading partner.

Sterling, having just posted its worst run of quarterly losses since 1984, skidded more than 1 percent against the dollar to $1.2845. That left it less than half a cent away from the 31-year low it plumbed in early July, shortly after the shock June 23 vote to leave the EU. The pound also shed 1 percent

against the euro to hit 87.48 pence, its weakest since August 2013.

“The fact that May has confirmed the timings for the triggering of Article 50 took away any lingering doubts and any lingering supportive elements for the currency, whereby...we could pretend nothing was going on,” said UBS Wealth Management currency strategist Geoffrey Yu. “Markets are fundamentally seeing Brexit as negative for the pound... and now we know it’s definitely going to happen, there’s more short-term or medium-term risk for the currency, but how it’s really going to play out remains to be seen.”

Yu added that sterling’s performance over the coming months would be determined by whether it looked as if Britain would undergo a “hard Brexit” - a total split from

the EU and its single market that some fear could drive an exodus of banks from London.

Forecasts for the pound after the vote were almost universally bleak. A number of major banks predicted a fall to around $1.20, levels not seen since the Plaza Accord’s move to weaken the dollar in the mid-1980s, but it has so far held up better than that, bottoming out in early July at $1.2798.

“From (May’s) comments it appears that next year it is going to be very volatile and the British currency may face a large move on any given day especially when it comes to conceptions and translations about Brexit,” said Think Forex analyst Naeem Aslam.

“A harder Brexit may punish the currency more, and if the economic data starts to fall off the cliff, it may actually push the politicians to strike for a softer Brexit.” (rtr)

JAKARTA — The U.S. owner of a gold and copper mine in eastern Indonesia that is among the largest in the world says its operations have been disrupted by a days-long strike. FreeportMcMoran spokesman Riza Pratama said Monday that open pit mining has stopped and processing of ore has been reduced.

A union official, Frans Okoseray, said about 1,200 workers began their strike on Wednesday to get bigger monthly bonus payments.

The Grasberg mine in Indonesia’s troubled Papua province is the world’s largest gold mine by reserves and one of the largest copper mines.

It has experienced previous violent protests by workers, while activist groups have complained of environmental damage and unfair distribution of profits.

Okoseray said the strikers include heavy equipment operators and truck drivers. He said they want their bonus to be equal to underground mine workers who get a 50 percent bonus each month.

Pratama said underground mining hasn’t been affected. Negotiations were under way among company officials, the workers and their union, he said.(ap)

Indonesian police investigate porn on public video screen

JAKARTA — Police in Indonesia’s capital are investigating the operator of a public video screen after it displayed a porn movie instead of advertising to passing traffic.

Ten people, including employees of the company operating the electronic billboard, have been questioned, Jakarta police spokesman Awi Setyono said Monday.

Police can’t yet name a suspect,

he added.

Twitter in social media-mad Indonesia was abuzz with news of the incident, which occurred not long after Friday prayers last week in the Muslim-majority

country.

Many users posted clips of the billboard as it displayed a Japanese porn movie playing in an internet browser.

Adrian Wiedarta, a manager at PT Transito Adimanjati, which operates the advertising screen, blamed the incident on a hacker who he said seized control of the

system, allowing the porn film to play for about five minutes.

Police assisted by nearby vendors shut off power to the giant video screen as drivers and pedestrians watched the movie.

Setyono said the police’s cybercrime unit has analyzed several computers seized from the company.

Jakarta police chief Muhammad Iriawan said the perpetrator could be charged under either the Electronic Transaction Law, which carries a maximum prison sentence of six years and a fine of 1 billion rupiah ($77,000), or the Pornography Law, which carries a prison sentence of up to 12 years.(ap)

Raja Ampat District Head Abdul Faris Umlati remarked here on Monday that the local government is in need of a ship to serve the route from the district town of Waisai to Misool island.

government has proposed to the central government to assign a ship to serve the route in a bid to attract tourist visits to Raja Ampat, especially to Misool island.

Batur geopark passes in revalidation UNESCO recommends some improvements to Bangli govt BANGLI - Batur geopark was finally declared to pass the revalidation

by UNESCO. This was announced at the closing ceremony of the UNESCO Global Geopark Conference in English Riviera Global Geopark, UK last September. Although it was declared to pass the revalidation and won a green card, the UNESCO remains to give some notes on repair to the government of Bangli, especially in terms of geosite arrangement.

Manager of the Batur Geopark who is also the Regional Secretary of Bangli, Ida Bagus Putra Giri, said on Sunday (Oct. 2) that in the closing ceremony of the UNESCO Global Geopark Conference he attended in English Riviera at Global Geopark UK was stated that the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark was declared to qualify for the revalidation and won the green card of the UNESCO. The green card is valid for four years until the next revalidation in 2020. He said that the success achieved by the Batur Geopark is inseparable from the cohesiveness and teamwork, community and the entire regional apparatus in Bangli.

He described that in the conference was revealed that conceptually the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark will be used as example in the world’s geopark. This happens because every geosite is always integrated with the geology, biology and culture.

“All the achievements are inseparable from the sublime concept of Tri Hita Karana we have, which has been applied to implement the geopark concept,” he explained.

Although it managed to pass in the revalidation and attained green card, Giri Putra acknowledged that UNESCO also provides the government of Bangli with some notes to make improvements. Some of the notes put more emphasis on the arrangement of the geosite.

Militant attack on Indian army base in Kashmir kills one

SRINAGAR - At least six militants attacked an Indian army camp in north Kashmir on Sunday night, killing one border guard and wounding another, two weeks after a similar attack killed 19 Indian soldiers and ratcheted up tensions between India and Pakistan.

The state broadcaster put the death toll at 52, citing regional officials. The opposition also said at least 50 people were killed at the annual festival where some people had chanted slogans against the government and waved a rebel group’s flag.

Sporadic protests have erupted in Oromiya in the last two years, initially sparked by a land row but increasingly turning more broadly against the government. Since late 2015, scores of protesters have been killed in clashes with police.

The developments highlight tensions in the country where the government has delivered stellar economic growth rates but faced criticism from opponents and rights groups that it has reduced political

freedoms.

Thousands of people had gathered for the annual Irreecha festival of thanksgiving in the town of Bishoftu, about 40 km (25 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa.

Crowds chanted “We need freedom” and “We need justice”, preventing community elders, deemed close to the government, from delivering their speeches.

Some protesters waved the red, green and yellow flag of the Oromo Liberation Front, a rebel group branded a terrorist organisation by the government, witnesses said.

When police fired teargas and guns into the air, crowds fled and created a stampede, some of them plunging into a deep ditch.

The witnesses said they saw people dragging out a dozen or more victims, showing no obvious sign of life. Half a dozen people, also motionless, were seen being taken by pick-up truck to a hospital, one witness said.

“As a result of the chaos, lives were lost and several of the injured

were taken to hospital,” the government communications office said in a statement, without giving figures. “Those responsible will face justice.”

Merera Gudina, chairman of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, told Reuters at least 50 people had died, based on details provided by families of the victims.

He said the government tried to use the event to show Oromiya was calm. “But residents still protested,” he said.

The government blames rebel groups and dissidents abroad for stirring up the protests and provoking violence. It dismisses charges that it clamps down on free speech or on its opponents.

Mission Complete: Rosetta says farewell with comet crash-landing

BERLIN - The Rosetta spacecraft ended its historic mission on Friday, crashing on the surface of the dusty, icy comet it has spent 12 years chasing in a hunt that has provided insight into the early days of the solar system and captured the public’s imagination.

The spacecraft has stalked comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko across more than 6 billion km (3.7 billion miles) of space, collecting a treasure trove of information on comets that will keep scientists busy for the next decade.

Scientists in the European Space Agency control centre in Darmstadt, Germany, clapped and hugged as confirmation of the end of the mission came at 1119 GMT. Rosetta completed its free-fall descent at the speed of a sedate walk, joining the probe Philae, which landed on the comet in November 2014 in what was considered a remarkable feat of precision space travel.

“Thank you Rosetta,” ESA director general Jan Woerner said on Twitter.

He was among some 300 people who had also gathered before dawn at a conference room at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, to watch a live webcast as Rosetta’s signal disappeared from monitors, simultaneously with the team in Germany.

“It was a good ending,” Klaus Schiling, who worked on mission

planning for Rosetta 27 years ago with prime contractor Airbus , told Reuters at the Mexico space conference. “There were so many ups and downs with this mission.”

Before reaching the surface and shutting down, Rosetta’s instruments and camera relayed back data and images, giving scientists insight into the structure of the comet.

That data will reveal information on the side walls of the comet, crucial to understanding how they

are formed, plus on large 100metre (300 foot) wide pits, which scientists believe are key to how the comet releases gas and dust as it is warmed by the sun.

Daniel Brown, an astronomy expert at Nottingham Trent University, said the images sent back from the Rosetta mission were “as powerful as Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon”.

Data collected by Rosetta and Philae is already helping scientists better understand how the Earth and other planets formed.

For example, scientists now believe that asteroids, not comets were primarily responsible for delivering water to Earth and other planets in the inner solar system, possibly setting the stage for life. (rtr)

ATLANTA — Authorities say a rare tree frog — the last known living member of the species in captivity — has died at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc. com/2d8qTPQ) that the dead Rabbs’ fringe-limbed tree frog was found dead in its enclosure during a routine daily inspection on Monday.

Workers at the garden had nicknamed the male amphibian “Toughie.” It was estimated to be about 12 years old when it died.

In 2005 the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Zoo Atlanta and Southern Illinois University sent a team of scientists to Panama to collect live animals before chytrid disease struck the area.

Among the frogs they brought back to Atlanta was a species of tree frogs (Ecnomiohyla rabborum) new to science, the Rabbs’ frog, the Atlanta newspaper reported. It was identified in 2005 by Zoo Atlanta herpetology

curator Joseph Mendelson, and later named for conservationists George and Mary Rabb. The disease eventually arrived in Panama, and many of the frogs disappeared.

In 2008 the botanical garden purchased and outfitted a climate-controlled facility known as the Frog Pod, designed to house the Rabb’s tree frog and other rare amphibians in complete isolation from each other, the Journal-Constitution reported. That’s where the Rabbs’ frog spent the last eight years of its 11-plus year lifespan.

“Science had a very short window to learn about the species in the wild before this disease struck the only known locality for the frog and the species vanished,” said Mary Pat Matheson, president and CEO of the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

After long dormant, Tanah Ampo harbor tested

AMLAPURA - After being dormant for long time, the Tanah Ampo harbor at Manggis, Karangasem, was finally tested by the Director General of Land Transportation, Ministry of Transportation and other related parties, Friday (Sep. 30). The testing process tried to uncover public controversy frequently doubting the pier’s compatibility for ship docking. In general, the testing process took place smoothly. However, the complete results of the testing will be issued on Monday (Oct. 3).

Testing process involved the experts from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the University of Indonesia (UI) and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing Affairs, while the Bali House of Representatives, the Bali Tourism Office and the Bali Transportation Agency, Benoa Harbor Authority and KSOP Padangbai were also present at the location. The harbor testing process did not use cruise ship, but the Mizan motor vessel, a special ship intended for the testing process. This ship has a length of 43 meters while the width is five meters, and the testing process took place for four times.

The Head of the Karangasem Transportation Agency, Wayan Sutapa, said that the testing process is done by independent parties in order to get neutral results. It implemented accelerometer technology.

Many aspects were tested such as the physical condition of the pier, the depth of surrounding sea and the waves, mooring process, the weather as well as the collision between the ship and the pier. “In general, the testing process seems to be going on smoothly, and when accidentally slammed with the pier there are no to significant vibrations,” said Sutapa.

This testing was carried out to prove the assessment of many parties regarding this pier. So far, many parties perceive if the pier is not feasible to operate. On the other hand, the construction of this

pier has spent a large amount of budget and should be helpful for the community. However, seeing the testing results on Friday, Sutapa is optimistic if the Tanah Ampo harbor can be operated properly. At least, this harbor, according to him, can serve ships with a maximum length of 150 meters. After seeing the interim results of this testing process, the Benoa Harbor Authority, said Sutapa, has given green light so that small cruise ships with a maximum length of 150 meters and below can be directed to moor at the Tanah Ampo Harbor, Karangasem.

Similar opinion was also stated by the Head of the KSOP Padangbai, I Ketut Gede Sudarma. If the official results declared that Tanah Ampo Harbor is really feasible, the Benoa Harbor Authority, he said, already agreed to establish cooperation in order that small cruise ships could be directed to moor at this harbor. Other than small-sized cruises, later on the speed boats normally operate at traditional harbor of Padangbai Port-Gili Trawangan will also be directed to operate at the Tanah Ampo Harbor. “However, the crossing to Nusa Penida remains to use Padangbai traditional harbor.

The first construction segment of the pier has the length of 154 meters and width of 12 meters, mooring area of 46.20 hectares, mooring terminal (2.54 hectares), lap pool area (27.45 hectares) and emergency purposes (23.10 hectares). For continuation of the development, detailed engineering design (DED) has been prepared since last year to develop the existing harbor. According to Serpi, in 2016 there were four cases of maternal mortality due to heart failure. All of these deaths occurred on the way because it happened suddenly and was not predicted in advance.

“This heart problem is experienced by mothers giving birth via cesarean section. It is not predictable because the mother had no previ-

ous history on alarming disease,”’ explained Serpi. Symptoms of heart failure causing the death, added Serpi, occurred in women after surgery on day 10 to day 21.

To prevent the case from happening again, the Tabanan Health Agency required all the health services to intervene in order to immediately refer the mother giving birth by surgery or post surgery with shortness although it is only a bit. Hospitals are required to handle it in multidisciplinary manner and examine completely with the help of laboratory and X-rays. “So, never decide in a hurry if there are no problems,” said Serpi.

To increase the income, he and a number of other crews seek another job in mainland. Some of them became timber porter and construction worker. In the meantime, this sardine famine is predicted to be happening until March 2017. The weather condition in the Bali Sea is unfavorable for habitat of catch fish as the impact of La Nina.

The Research Institute for Marine Observations (SEACORM) released data analysis that the catch of sardine during the El Nino last year was quite a lot, while in the current La Nina the

catch of fishermen decreased and even disappeared from the waters of Bali.

Widodo S. Pranowo, from the Center for Research and Development of Marine and Coastal Resources explained the impact of La Nina on the catch depends on the strength of the weather anomalies whose peak is predicted to happen in October to November. This condition also happens in other fishing areas.

The water of tuna producer also experiences a shift.

The Head of the Research and Marine Observations (SEACORM), Nyoman Radiaka, told reporters that the fish movement is also affected by climate change. ‘Miss Peregrine’ bests ‘Deepwater Horizon’ at box office

NEW YORK — In a box-office rarity, three acclaimed, original films from studios opened in theaters over the weekend. Only one caught on. Tim Burton’s latest fantastical oddity, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” debuted with $28.5 million, leading North America ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Peter Berg’s well-reviewed disaster movie “Deepwater Horizon,” about the 2010 oil rig explosion, however, failed to tap North American moviegoers, opening with an estimated $20.6 million. And Disney’s uplifting chess prodigy tale “Queen of Katwe,” starring David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o, brought in a dismal $2.6 million in its national expansion.

Originality, that often lamented missing ingredient in studio products, can lead to box office success, just as it can disappointment. For 20th Century Fox, the draw of “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” was predicated on the idiosyncrasy of Burton funneled into an accessible tale, adapted from Ransom Rigg’s popular young-adult novel.

“It validates the whole notion of why we made this film, which is something that’s very original and creative,” said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at Fox. “At least I feel that that’s what audiences are looking for. There’s some fatigue with the same old, same old. And if there’s anything this movie isn’t, it’s that.”

The film cost $110 million to make, meaning it will need a strong performance overseas to be profitable. It started out with $36.5 million in 59 markets.

Regardless, it’s a comeback of sorts for Burton at the box office. It’s his best opening since 2012’s lackluster “Dark Shadows.”

Lionsgate’s “Deepwater Horizon,” starring Mark Wahlberg, also cost at least $110 million to make, yet it only managed $20.6 million in its debut. The film,

TABANAN - Throughout the year 2016, there were four cases of maternal mortality. All the cases happened due to heart failure after giving birth through cesarean section.

To avoid similar cases, the Tabanan Health Agency requires all the health services to report the childbirth cases by cesarean section and monitor the mother.

Section Head of the Maternal, Child and Family Planning Services at the Tabanan Health Agency, I Gusti Ayu Seputri Widhiyani, said on Sunday (Oct. 2) that the health agency has provided mass learning about the cases of maternal and perinatal mortality in Tabanan. The learning is followed by all medical personnel in the health care services at the health

centers as well as government and private hospitals. The lessons given are in appropriate with the case assessment results done by the experts from both internal and external team of the Sanglah Hospital and the Bali Health Agency.
