LOS ANGELES - The tiny, yellow, animated blobs have done it again. Illumination and Universal’s “Despicable Me 3” is cruising to an easy box office win during a busy holiday weekend. The latest in the franchise is opening to $75.4 million from 4,529 locations -- the widest domestic release ever. That total is lower than earlier estimates, which pegged the film above $80 million (earlier tracking suggested it could land even higher), but nevertheless it remains the weekend’s big winner.

Steve Carell plays double duty in “Despicable Me 3” as the series’ protagonist Gru, and now also his twin brother, Dru. The plot centers on the brothers, as they team up for a criminal heist. “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker joins the franchise to voice the villain. Critics are generally on the movie’s side, earning it a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie earned an ACinemaScore from audiences, which is lower than the A earned by the first two installments and “Minions.”

“With these characters that have reached a level of ubiquity in our culture, these movies continue to create this want to see,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief, who added, “I think we have the best marketing group in the business.”

Despite “Despicable’s” rule, perhaps the more interesting stories for

the industry reside further down the box office chart.

Starting with “Baby Driver,” from Sony’s TriStar Pictures, MRC, and Working Title. Edgar Wright’s latest also appears to be his biggest box office hit, as it’s cruising to $30 million from 3,226 locations -- that’s including the $5.7 million head start the movie got by opening early in previews on Tuesday.

The movie centers around a character named Baby (Ansel Elgort), who becomes the getaway driver for a kingpin named Doc (Kevin Spacey). Music plays an integral role in the film since Baby suffered a traumatic experience as a child that left him with tinnitus, which he blocks out with music. The rest of the cast includes Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzalez, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Foxx. (rtr)

Kensington Palace says young royals to go on Europe tour

LONDON — Kensington Palace says the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will take Prince George and Princess Charlotte along when they tour Germany and Poland.

The palace says in a statement Monday that the five-day tour beginning July 17 in Warsaw will feature appearances by the children.

The trip is being seen as an effort to bolster Britain’s goodwill ties with Europe amid negotiations to leave the European Union.

The palace says the royals are looking “forward to a busy and impactful tour,” and are happy as a family to meet “such important friends of the United Kingdom.”

Prince William and the former Kate Middleton also took George, 3, and Charlotte, 2, on an official tour to Canada last year. (ap)

Saudi Arabia, allies give Qatar two more days to accept demands

DUBAI/DOHA - Four Arab states which accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism agreed to extend until late on Tuesday a deadline for Doha to comply with a list of demands, as U.S. President Donald Trump voiced concern to both sides about the dispute. Qatar has called the charges baseless and says the demands, including closing Qatar-based al Jazeera TV and ejecting Turkish troops based there, are so severe that they seem intended to be rejected.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have raised the possibility of further sanctions against Qatar if it does not comply with the 13 demands presented to Doha through Kuwait, which is acting as a mediator. According to a joint statement on Saudi state news agency SPA, the four countries agreed to a request

by Kuwait to extend by 48 hours Sunday’s deadline for compliance.

They have not specified what further sanctions they could impose on Doha, but commercial bankers in the region believe that Saudi, Emirati and Bahraini banks might receive official guidance to pull deposits and interbank loans from Qatar. Foreign ministers from the four countries will meet in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss Qatar, Egypt said, while Arab media reported that Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman

al-Thani arrived in Kuwait on Monday to deliver Doha’s formal response to the Arab demands.

The four states cut diplomatic and commercial ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of supporting terrorism, meddling in their internal affairs and advancing the agenda of regional foe Iran, all of which Qatar denies.

Mediation efforts, including by the U.S., have been fruitless. Trump spoke separately to the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in the UAE to discuss his “concerns about the ongoing dispute”, the White House said.

“He reiterated the importance of stopping terrorist financing and discrediting extremist ideology. The president also underscored that unity in the region is critical to accomplishing the Riyadh Summit’s goals of defeating terrorism and promoting regional stability,” the White House said.

“President Trump, nevertheless, believes that the overriding objective of his initiative is the cessation of funding for terrorism,” it said. On Monday, Trump tweeted: “Spoke yesterday with the King of Saudi Arabia about peace in the Middle-East. Interesting things are happening!”

URGING RESTRAINT A State Department official said on Sunday that the United States encourages “all parties to exercise restraint to allow for productive diplomatic discussions.”

BAF improves livelihoods

As of June 30 turnover of IDR 8.9 billion

DENPASAR —The Bali Arts Festival (BAF) features Balinese arts performances and also provides a space for Balinese small and medium industries (SMI) to show of their artisanal products.

This year’s BAF has proven to be especially profitable compared to previous years.

Head of the Bali Culture Office, Dewa Putu Beratha, recently explained that the artisans who participated in this BAF are pleased about being able to showcase their crafts to the public.

Vendors of culinary delights have also been pleased with the event as most of them said that they were sold out by 20:00. “Warung Be Genyol sold as much as IDR 10 million per day”, said Beratha.

These successes show that the current national economic slump has not affected the BAF. In fact, the idea of inviting Balinese artisans and SMEs to participate in the BAF is part of efforts being made to stimulate local and rural economies.

As of June 30, 2017, the turnover of BAF sales had reached IDR 8.9 billion. Metallic items showed the highest turnover with sales of IDR 3.2 billion. This was followed by textile products which sold IDR 967,900,000, Dekranasda sold IDR 576,714,000 worth of merchandise, wood crafts IDR 487,043,000, rattan, bamboo, palm leaf and other crafts sold IDR 106,680,000, leather goods sold IDR 40,695,000 worth and miscellaneous other crafts have sold a total of IDR 3.5 billion. Beratha says that he hopes to see great sales figures continuing to increase through the last week of the BAF. Owner of Vajra Silver, Mahadev Sugianti, said that the BAF is a great event for showcasing her new products. In a single day she said that they can sell as many as 75 sets of earrings with prices ranging from between IDR 50,000 - IDR 700,000 depending on the materials. “We actually end up selling some of our more expensive products here”, she said.

Their most popular items she explained, are the more expensive silver jewelry. In addition to selling Balinese earrings, Vajra Silver also sells brooches that range in price from IDR 100,000 to IDR 4.5 million and rings that sell for anywhere from IDR 50,000 to IDR 1 million.

After participating in the BAF three times, Sugianti said that she has learned the importance of constantly coming up with innovative products. She designs all her accessories herself while the craftsmanship is done by metal smiths. She has some of her own in-house craftsmen but she also provides work for freelance craftsmen. In that case, she brings the materials and designs right to their home studios. (kmb42)

DENPASAR —Bali is increasingly resonant with tourists from all over the world, especially after visits from international figure such as Saoudi Arabia’s King Salman and Prince, the former US President Barack Obama and family, and the Prime Minister of Malaysia who all chose to holiday in Bali.

Not only does Bali host such illustrious figures as these, the Island of the Gods also hosts international conferences attended by world political leaders, MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibition) events for various organizations and professional associations of various fields, and is also a popular destination for celebrity weddings and honeymoons as well as national and world class athletes.

educational tourism, health tourism and other types being developed in Bali. Al of these he emphasized, must contribute to maintaining the environment, nature and culture of Bali. Local Balinese must also be able to maintain their identity that includes tolerance for diversity, without having their religious beliefs shaken. Thus, Bali can remain a source of inspiration for tolerance in the world. Tourism activities contain the values tolerance and diversity.

International legal observer Dewa Gede Sudika Mangku expressed similar opinions. Visits to Bali by important dignitaries he said, are good for tourism in Bali in particular and Indonesia in general.

Former US president Obama’s visit, he added provides a breath of fresh air for the development of tourism in Bali and is positive for diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the United States.(win)

China’s new heavy-lift rocket launch fails in flight

The same rocket type had been expected to take China’s latest lunar probe to the Moon this year and to return with samples. It is not clear how the timetable for that mission could be affected by the

failed launch.

President Xi Jinping has prioritised advancing China’s space programme to strengthen national security and defence, and the government has stressed it is a purely

peaceful initiative.

“An anomaly occurred during the flight of the rocket,” Xinhua said after the rocket blasted off early evening from the southern island province of Hainan.

“Further investigation will be carried out,” it said, without elaborating.

China’s space programme has largely operated without many

major hitches, though it still has a way to go to catch up with the United States and Russia.

In late 2013, China’s Jade Rabbit moon rover landed on the Moon to great national fanfare, but ran into severe technical difficulties.

The U.S. Defense Department has highlighted China’s increasing space capabilities, saying it was pursuing activities aimed at pre-

venting other nations from using space-based assets in a crisis.

China is preparing to send a man to the Moon, state media cited a senior space official as saying last month.

In 2003, it became the third country to put a man in space with its own rocket after the former Soviet Union and the United States. (rtr)

Rare butterfly thrives on, and because of, US military bases BOSTON — In the shadow of giant war machines, a tiny rare butterfly is flourishing. Oddly, experts say, the U.S. military gets the credit.

The frosted elfin, which flutters along on a 1-inch (2.5 centimeters) wingspan, has found a home at several defense installations because of the way the military manages open spaces, said Robyn Niver, an endangered species biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“Military training requires vast open areas, so these bases are some of our last great wild places,” Niver said.

The little brown butterfly has been confirmed at Westover Air Reserve Base and Camp Edwards in Massachusetts; Fort McCoy in

Wisconsin; Fort Bragg in North Carolina; and the New Hampshire State Military Reservation, she said.

The common thread among the bases is the way they manage vegetation through controlled burns, which create the perfect conditions for wild blue lupine and indigo to grow, the frosted elfin caterpillar’s two host plants.

The dainty butterflies were first spotted at Westover in Chicopee, Massachusetts, about 20 years ago, according to Jack Moriarty, the base’s chief of environmental engineering.

Proper vegetation control is critical for the safety of the massive C5 military transport aircraft that call the base home. If the vegetation

is cut too short, it attracts geese and gulls, increasing the risk of aircraft strikes. If it is allowed to grow too tall, turkeys, deer, and coyotes move in. Lupine and indigo are just the right height.

Although there have been anecdotal reports of its presence in the past, the frosted elfin was confirmed at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod just this spring, said Jake McCumber, the Massachusetts Army National Guard’s natural resources manager.

“It was pretty exciting. I was thrilled,” he said. “Our grasslands are in the headquarters area, so it’s probably the busiest part of the base.”

Economic factors are putting increasing pressure on people to focus on the short term rather than the long term of all three of these relationships, with results that range anywhere from uncomfortable to seriously problematic, to near disastrous. Perhaps by looking at how farming, tourism and traditional ceremonies can interact with each other in mutually supportive ways, harmony can more easily be achieved and the driving force of the economy can work in everyone’s favour, instead of working to everyone’s detriment.

Many young Balinese people however, are preferring to find work in the tourism industry which appears to be easier and able to provide a more stable income than farming and crafting (that often accompanies farming). Selling off farmlands to make room for tourist accommodations, is also increasingly common as it provides farmers and others with instant mobility. Religious life and the elaborate ceremonies -which are a big part of why people come to Bali, are also intimately tied to agriculture and thus also affected by the same pressures.

Although the relationship between tourism, farming and ceremonies is varied and complex, there are some simple things that can have significant positive impacts such as economically supporting the crucial role that farmers play.

Ketut Arimbawa was born and raised in the area of Subak Pulangan by a family who farmed large swaths of land there. As a young man he moved to Europe with his French wife Adriana where they had two children. Their children are now school aged and when asked why their family had decided to move back to Bali, they explained that despite many of the advantages of living in France, such as free high quality education and health care, they felt that the the cultural and natural environment of Bali were of immeasurable value in terms of raising their children.

They have opened a small restaurant in front of their home on Jalan Dr. Soekarna (AKA Jl. Raya Tampaksiring) near Gunung Kawi, that serves truly delicious Indonesian and French food and Adriana has started making her own organic chocolate. While Adriana does all

the cooking for Bistro Tampaksiring, Ketut provides the ingredients from his organic vegetable garden that he planted on his ancestral land.

Ketut is one of the only people in the area to be growing vegetables so his neighbours have taken notice and a few have even followed suite.

Although he remains the only one to have a full garden, Ketut is enthusiastic about encouraging the young people from his village to value the land that has been bequeathed to them.

Ketut’s land lies adjacent to spectacular rice fields that make up part of Subak Pulangan that was named a world intangible heritage

by UNESCO recently. This status has yet to have much impact practically speaking but does highlight the tremendous value of maintaining this green space and the sacred waters that feed it.

Ketut sometimes provides walking tours to introduce tourists to some of Bali’s tremendous cultural, spiritual and agricultural heritage but his vision is to encourage local young people to appreciate this wealth as he did with renewed vigour upon his return from abroad.

Abe-do is another small restaurant that serves organic food as well as special juices. Nyoman Sukerta started this small business with his wife Sri after she was cured of severe illness by drinking traditional medicinal herbal mixtures and eating whole foods. Nyoman gave up painting to share healthy food with the public and with just IDR 2 million opened this restaurant that serves traditional herbal drinks, healthy Indonesian and Balinese dishes as well as an array of fresh garden salads.

Located as they are on Jalan Tirta Tawar not too far from downtown Ubud, tourists started coming to eat here. A few tourists offered to help with online marketing and now Nyoman and his wife can work from home allowing them to maintain their demanding ceremonial schedule.

Fresh organic vegetables are delivered to Abe-do everyday by Mr. Hartono, whose organic farm is located less than a kilometre away on Jalan Sri Wedari. The plot of land that Mr. Hartono farms is located in between a growing number of villas and across the

street from Gede Sayur’s infamous “NOT FOR SALE” installation in the rice paddies.

Set some distance from the remaining green spaces of Ubud right in the heart of Bali’s cultural tourism centre, is landmark organic health food restaurant Soma. The large volume of food (including coconuts) required by Soma every-

day not only supports local organic farmers but also provides a space for harmony to flourish.

Owner and local legend Om Johnny has made harmony his life’s mission. Not only are his fair number of staff taught about the benefits of organic food, clean water and small footprint practices, but they are also encouraged to think long term about their own lives and that of their social, cultural and physical environment too.

On any given day this oasis of calm in the bustle of downtown Ubud is filled to capacity at peak dinning hours, and yet his staff are

encouraged to take the time they need to attend to their well-being and religious obligations. As Om Johnny says: “it is better to have a few less hands on deck than than to have people working who are not happy”.

Eid holiday ends, passengers start to leave Bali

The number of domestic departures amounted to 19,330 passengers, an increase of 7.29 percent when compared to last year’s 18,017 passengers.

There was also a 18. 72 percent increase in passengers on international flights departing, with a total of 17,920 passengers compared to last year’s 15,082 passengers flying overseas.

Thailand’s new labour rules send thousands of migrant workers fleeing

BANGKOK - Tens of thousands of workers have fled Thailand, most of them for homes in neighbouring Myanmar, immigration officials said on Monday, after new labour regulations adopted by the military government sparked fear and panic among the migrant community.

DENPASAR — The national economy continues to stagnate and has major impacts on the development of regional economies and Denpasar is no exception. There have, for example been no major investments made in Denpasar in 2017. Any major projects are only continuations of ones started previously.

Head of the Denpasar Investment and Integrated Licensing Office (PM and PPTSP), I Made Kusuma Diputra said on Sunday (Jul. 2) that medium scale development is also scare. This can be seen from the lack of building permits (IMB) being requested by real estate developers. In previous years, many permits requests were already being submitted by this time of year.

Duputra added, however, that the number of requests for building permits for residential homes

remains stable though not considerable. He therefore predicts that the cost of building permits will not go up this year. “Fortunately, because Bali is a tourist destination, other sectors can be relied on to generate local revenue”, he said.

The generally weak economy is also evident in the Municipality of Denpasar’s low target for their income for building permits. In the regional budget for 2017, they have drafted the same target as last year, namely IDR 14.8 billion.

The hotel and restaurant tax levied by the Denpasar revenue services during the period of JanuaryMarch 2017 showed an increase compared to the same period last year.

Head of the Denpasar Revenue Services, Dewa Semadi, conveyed that in January 2017 the hotel taxes amounted to IDR 12.8 billion, showing an increase over

the IDR 11.9 million collected in 2016.

In February 2017, IDR 11.7 billion had been collected, while in 2016 only 10.5 billion was collected for the same period. Only in March was there a slight decrease when IDR 10,255,324,378 in taxes were collected compared to the IDR 10,277,324. 724 for March 2016.

Dewa Semadi added that restaurant tax in January 2017 reached IDR 7.5 billion and in 2016 amounted to approximately IDR 9.3 billion. Then, in February 2017 it successfully increased by IDR 8.3 billion, an increase when compared to 2016 only reaching IDR 6.4 billion.

Millions of workers from poor neighbours, such as Cambodia and Myanmar, form the backbone of Thailand’s manual labour force, with industries such as the multibillion-dollar seafood business heavily reliant on foreign workers.

Since taking power in a 2014 coup, Thailand’s ruling junta has attained varying degrees of success in campaigns to regulate the foreign workforce, spurred partly by media reports that unregulated workers faced exploitation by employers.

About 60,000 workers left between June 23 and 28, and the number has risen since, an Immigration Bureau official said.

“They were of all nationalities, but the biggest group was from Myanmar,” Deputy Commissioner Pornchai Kuntee told Reuters.

“They are probably very scared.”

Following news of the exodus, Thailand on Friday promised a 120-day delay in enforcing parts of the decree, including fines that can range up to 800,000 baht ($23,557) for employers who hire unregistered foreign workers without permits.

Geta Devi, 28, a Myanmar worker based in Bangkok, said some of her friends panicked over the decree, adding, “They went back to Myanmar.”

Thai government trucks have been taking workers to the Myanmar town of Myawaddy, 246 km (153 miles) east of Yangon, and located opposite the Thai town of Mae Sot, to be handed to Myanmar authorities, a Myanmar official said.

It was unclear if they were leaving Thailand voluntarily.

Since June 29, more than 16,000 people have returned home, Aung Htay Win, a labour ministry official who is coordinating Myanmar’s response, told Reuters.

The figure included both legal and undocumented migrants fearing a crackdown, as well as some ordered home by employers, he said.

“Most of them stay for one night or so, then they continue to their home towns,” he said, adding the workers were being temporarily housed in government buildings.

BUSINESS Why market competition has not brought down health care costs

It is easier than ever to buy stuff. You can purchase almost anything on Amazon with a click, and it is only slightly harder to find a place to stay in a foreign city on Airbnb. So why can’t we pay for health care the same way?

My research into the economics of health care suggests we should be able to do just that, but only if we say goodbye to our current system of private insurance – and the heavy administrative burden that goes along with it. Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would take us in the wrong direction.

What makes health care so complicated In a way, the reason buying health care is different than shopping for a garden gnome or short-term apartment seems obvious. Picking the right doctor, for example, involves a lot more anxiety and uncertainty and concerns matters of life and death.

But that’s not really the reason we can’t purchase health care the same way we buy an iPhone. In 1969, this would almost be true (for a rotary phone anyway). Back then, the bill for a birth in a New Jersey hospital looked a lot like the receipt you’d get for buying pretty much anything else: customer name, amount and a box to be checked for payment by check, charge or money order. Today, paying for even the simplest office visit can become a nightmare, requiring insurance preauthorization, reimbursements adjusted for in-network or out-of-network copays and deductibles and the physician “tier” (or how your prospective doctor is evaluated for cost and quality by the insurance company).

Prescriptions require even more authorizations, while follow-up care necessitates coordinated review – and it goes without saying that many forms will have to be completed. And this doesn’t end when you arrive at the doctor’s office. A large chunk of any visit is spent with a beleaguered nurse, or even the physician, filling out a required checklist of insurancemandated questions. The growing

We can blame a significant part of the soaring cost of health care on the ever-increasing burden of administrative complexity, whose cost has climbed at a pace of more than 10 percent a year since 1971 and now consumes over 4 percent of GDP, up from less than 1 percent back then.

Lemons and cherries So if the rising cost of adminis-

tration is a primary force driving health care inflation, why don’t we do something about it? That’s because administrative complexity and waste are no accident but rather are baked into our private health insurance system and made worse by continuing attempts to use competitive market processes to achieve social ends other than maximizing profit. Paying a doctor was relatively simple in the 1960s.

Most people had the same insurance policy, issued by Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which back then was a private company but operated like a non-profit under strict regulation.

But in hopes of controlling

steadily rising costs, policymakers encouraged insurers besides Blue Cross to enter health insurance markets, beginning with the HMO Act of 1973. The proliferation of for-profit companies with competing plans raised billing costs for health care providers, which now had to submit claims to a multitude of different insurers, each with its own codes, forms and regulations. Not only that, but insurers quickly discovered the dirty secret of health care finance: Sick people are expensive and make up most costs, while healthy people are profitable.

In other words, the vital lesson for an insurer looking to make

money is to identify the few sick people and get them to go away (“lemon dropping”) and find the healthy majority and do things that attract them to your plan (“cherry picking”).

Insurers are happy to offer discounts on fitness club memberships to attract healthy people, for example. But they punish the sick with higher copays and deductibles, as well as increasingly restrictive and intrusive regulations on preauthorization. Economists call it adverse selection. Regular people call it paperwork hell. Whatever the name, it’s the purpose of increasingly complicated insurance plans and reimbursement forms.(rtr)

Saraswati Day, Worship God as Creator of Science

Hindu community in Bali will celebrate Saraswati feast day on Saturday and Banyupinaruh Day on Sunday. Both feast days fall every six months (210 days). Saraswati Day falling on Saniscara Umanis Watugunung aims to worship the Goddess Saraswati as the creator of science.

On that day, pupils, college students, teachers, lecturers, priests and other Hindu communities perform worship. All manuscripts mainly palm-leaf manuscripts, the Vedas, religious literature and books as source of knowledge are consecrated and given the offerings.

By and large, books are consecrated on satvika time when the sun rises.

At that time, the atmosphere is very calm and sunny.

In the meantime, rajasika time (noon, turbulent time) and tamasika time (evening, time of dimmer) are considered not good. “Goddess Saraswati is symbolized as a very beautiful and charming goddess.

This implies that science is beautiful because it can lead humans to perfect well-being,” said Jero Mangku Ketut Arthana.

Goddess Saraswati has four hands and each carries beads (rosary), manuscript, veena (musical instrument) and kumbhaja (lotus).

offerings and worship to God as an expression of gratitude. In a series of the ceremony, devotees prepare herbal drink and pradnyan rice.

Eating the rice and consuming the herbal drink symbolize to experience the ups and down of life. “By bringing together all the flavors, it is believed to create a peaceful mind,” he said.

Balinese community celebrates Saraswati uniquely because on the next day there is also a series of ceremony. They consist of Banyupinaruh on Redite (Sunday) Paing. “Banyupinaruh is derived from two words, namely banyu meaning ‘water’ and pinaruh meaning keweruhan or knowledge coming down on the previous day (on Saraswati) to be distributed to all parties. If developed well, it will be more beneficial,” he explained.

At the ceremony of Banyupinaruh, devotees flock the springs or water sources to do self-purification. The springs means the source where the water flows from, they may be shower, lakes or seas. On that account, young people today take advantage of the Banyupinaruh feast day to travel with friends, family and girlfriend or boyfriend.

Wednesday (Jan. 25) has close relationship to Saraswati. Celebration of the Saraswati is closely associated with Pagerwesi. If on Saraswati day the Hindus worship the Goddess Saraswati as the goddess blessing the science, in the next morning they perform Banyu Pinaruh.

This holy day has a philosophy

that science flows like water and cools down humans so that they need to learn it in depth. On this day, devotees do self-purification with a shower and shampoo in source of holy water such as lakes, ocean or tributaries.

After the Banyupinaruh is Soma Ribek, meaning that when humans have already obtained the knowl-

edge and possessed skills, they will be very valuable when they are used positively in order to bring in changes to society. Ultimately, Pagerwesi is a celebration after humans apply their knowledge so that they can become quality teachers (role model) in delivering their knowledge to the broadest community. (kmb)

Betel Nut Box, a Tradition of the Elderly when Receiving Guests Nampin or chewing betel leaves is one of the traditions that remains strong amongst Balinese elders.

According to one respected elder named Ni Ketut Darma, who still chews betel leaves everyday, tradtionally the ingredients for betwel chewing are kept in a special betel nut box called pabuan or pecanangan. “When we use this box at home we call it pabuan, but when we serve guests we call this penginangan, using more refined language” she explained.

According to Grandma Darma, the betel nut box is made of wood in the long side shape where it generally consists of some compartments containing lime, betel leaves, gam-

bier, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle or panyawisan, small knife, and caket (used to halve areca nut).

She said that in the past the betel nut box was the first thing to be served to guests who came or when visiting other people’s homes.

“Presenting betel nut box and nampin has become a tradition in the life of Balinese people, until now this tradition remains to be implemented especially by parents like me,” she said.

She added the betel nut box is not only served at home, but also at temple with a different designation. At temple, it is called pacanangan, functioned as the offerings presented to deities. Pabuan

and pacanangan is basically not the same. Pabuan served at home usually contains lime, gambier, betel leaf, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle, small knife, and caket, while the pecanangan at temple has the same contents with additional ingredients like thread, money and fruits.

When asked about how she feels when doing nampin, she just claimed to be accustomed to doing it. Men and women of her age usually do it. It is tasteless but the lips feel abrasive. It feels nothing due to the mixture with lime. “Our lips are abrasive, but I have been accustomed to the taste,” she said. (kmb)

U.S. warship sails near disputed island in South China Sea

WASHINGTON - A U.S. warship sailed near a disputed island in the South China Sea claimed by China, Taiwan and Vietnam on Sunday in an operation meant to challenge the competing claims of all three nations, a U.S. Defense Department official said.

Indonesia sets tariff ranges for online car-hailing services

JAKARTA - Indonesia has set minimum and maximum tariffs for online car-hailing services, aiming to ensure comparable pricing with conventional transport providers whose drivers have complained about being undercut by their newer competitors. Ride-hailing services such as U.S. group Uber Technologies Inc, Southeast Asia’s Grab and Indonesia’s GO-JEK have heavily subsidised their drivers in Indonesia in order to gain market share in the country of 250 million people, analysts say.

The transport ministry said it had set a tariff range for online car-hailing services of 3,500-6,000 rupiah ($0.26-$0.45) per kilometre for the islands of Java, Bali and Sumatra. For Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Papua, the range is 3,700-6,500 rupiah per kilometre. The regulation kicked in on July 1 and will be evaluated in the next six months, the ministry said in a statement.

“There has to be a balance between conventional and online transport, so that has to be regulated,” Pudji Hartanto Iskandar, director-general of land transport at the ministry, told Reuters by phone.

Indonesia’s two biggest established taxi operators are PT Blue Bird Tbk and PT Express Transindo Utama Tbk , whose shares have fallen on investor concerns about competition from the cheaper ride-hailing services. Drivers of Blue Bird and Express have called for a ban on ride-hailing services, claiming they were subject to less stringent requirements than conventional taxis.

Uber said in an emailed statement it had yet to receive a copy of Indonesia’s regulations. “However, we remain committed to working with the government to find a path forward that accommodates the interests of riders and driver partners and supports innovation, competition and customer choice,” Uber said. 18 feared dead in fiery Bavarian bus crash

BERLIN (AP) — Eighteen people are feared dead after a bus carrying a group of German senior citizens crashed into a truck on a highway in Bavaria early Monday and burst into flames, police said.

Thirty people were injured in the early-morning accident, some seriously, while 18 still considered missing “are believed to have died on the burning bus,” police said in a statement.

Authorities said that forensic specialists were being brought in from Germany’s federal police office to remove and identify the bodies from the charred vehicle. Police spokeswoman Irene Brandenstein said the work was slow and labor intensive given how badly damaged the bus was by the fire.

“The investigation of the ac-

cident is very complex and timeconsuming,” Brandenstein told The Associated Press.

The accident took place around 7 a.m. (0500GMT) when the bus rear-ended the trailer-truck at the end of a traffic jam on the A9 highway near Muenchberg in Bavaria, not far from the Czech border. The highway remained closed on both sides for hours and police tweeted later that the road leading south would be shut down for the entire day.

Several helicopters, firefighters and ambulances were on the scene

to rescue the injured.

Two drivers and 46 passengers were on the bus, Brandenstein said.

By the time firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames, the bus a black, smoking skeleton.

Police said that the group on the bus came from Saxony in eastern Germany and that no children were on the bus. The German news agency dpa reported that all passengers were German citizens.

A phone number was activated to provide family members with information. Brandenstein had no immediate information on the condition of the truck driver.

Aid helicopter crash kills 8 after Indonesian volcano erupts

JAKARTA — A rescue helicopter crashed while heading to help evacuate residents near an active volcano on Indonesia’s main island, killing all eight people on board, officials said Monday. The helicopter crashed about three minutes before arriving at Dieng Plateau, the popular tourist area where the volcanic eruption Sunday injured at least 10 people. The aircraft reportedly hit a cliff on Butak Mountain in the Temanggung district of Central Java province.

All eight people on board were killed, said Maj. Gen. Heronimus Guru, deputy operations chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency. He told The Associated Press, “We are now at the Bhayangkara Hospital in Semarang,” the Central Java provincial capital where the victims’ bodies were taken.

Brig. Gen. Ivan Tito, director of operation and training at the search agency, told TVOne station in a live interview from Temanggung, that the victims were four navy officers and four rescuers. He also said the Indonesian-made Dauphin AS365 helicopter was airworthy.

The Sileri Crater at Dieng Plateau spewed cold lava, mud and ash as high as 50 meters (164 feet) into the sky when it erupted Sunday morning, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. The sudden eruption occurred while about 17 visitors were around the crater.

Ten people were injured and were treated at a hospital.

Soldiers and police officers were dispatched and local residents and visitors were asked to evacuate in case of further eruptions, Nugroho said. The crater appeared to be quieter Monday morning, and all visitors to the

plateau have been evacuated.

Sileri is the most active and dangerous among some 10 craters at Dieng Plateau. Its most recent eruption was in 2009, when it unleashed volcanic materials up to 200 meters (656 feet) high and triggered the creation of three new craters.

Dieng Plateau, located in the Central Java district of Banjarnegara, is a popular tourist attraction because of its cool climate and ninth-century Hindu temples. It sits about 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) above sea level.

Some 142 people were reportedly asphyxiated in 1979 when the volcano spewed gases.(ap)

the Ceningan Strait, especially at low tide when the seaweed work is underway. Beach highlights include Sandy Beach, Dream Beach, the Devil’s Tear, Mushroom Beach and Tamarind Beach, with each of these reached by bumpy roads off to the west of Lembongan village.

you to the mangroves first (better time for birds and light) and it also means you get to roll down the big hill into Jungut Batu village rather than push your bike up it.

Pushbikes can be hired at a few shops in Jungut Batu and some hotels may supply them for free. If this is all too much pedalling, you can do the same trip by motorbike.

You can easily rent a bicycle (typically from your hotel) and spend the day pottering round the island. End the day watching a game of competitive inter-village beach volleyball or head to the Mangrove bar at the northern end of the island with a floating pontoon in the middle of the mangroves (though this can be slightly disappointing at low tide).

SYDNEY - Australia’s Jeff Horn brushed aside the outcry against his shock victory over Manny Pacquiao on Monday and said he hoped taking the Filipino’s WBO welterweight title would help reinvigorate boxing Down Under.

The 29-year-old former schoolteacher was awarded a unanimous 12-round decision over the eight-division world champion after a bloody battle in front of more than 51,000 fans at Brisbane’s Lang Park on Sunday.

Not everybody was happy with the victory, awarded with scores of 117-111, 115-113 and 115113 by the three judges, and former undisputed world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was among those who disputed whether Horn should have won.

“There’s always going to be the backlash where people are going to say I lucky, or whatever,” Horn, his right eye swollen shut, told reporters in Brisbane on Monday.

“There’s always naysayers saying I didn’t win the fight. I think I won the fight, a lot of Queenslanders think I won the fight and people around the world.

So you will always have the select few that are against you.”

The critics of the decision pointed to the 182 to 92 punch count in favour of the Pacquiao, with some suggesting that Horn was awarded the victory for effort.

“This is what’s wrong with boxing,” Lewis tweeted. “Horn was a very game but I’m hard pressed to see how he could have won that fight by any stretch!”

Pacquiao, whose defeat was his first since his blockbuster clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2005, indicated on Sunday that he would take up the option of a rematch and Horn said he would be delighted to face the 38-year-old in his first title defence.

LIEGE - Chris Froome got a brutal reminder of the unpredictable nature of the Tour de France when he crashed to the ground in Sunday’s second stage, recovering to finish with torn shorts as German Marcel Kittel powered to victory at the end of a huge sprint.

After being faster than his rivals in Saturday’s opening time trial, defending champion Froome was sitting comfortably near the front of the peloton when he was

brought down as a Katusha rider lost his balance in front of him some 30km from the finish.

“I have no injuries thankfully I’ve just lost a little bit of skin on my backside. That’s the nature of the race,” said Froome.

The Briton’s Sky team mate Geraint Thomas and last year’s runner-up, Frenchman Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale), were also involved in the pile-up but made it back to the main pack along with three-time champion

His team on Sunday had an average age of just over 24, compared to over 30 for Chile. Julian Draxler, who captained the side aged 23, was their most experienced player with 35 caps. “I’m immensely proud of this team because they have been together for only three-and-half weeks,” Loew told reporters.

“You could actually feel in all of our training sessions, every single day, that something was happening there. You could feel an unbelievable hunger for victory, both on the training pitch and during matches, so it’s well-deserved. “The fact that these young players have won this tournament makes it an historic achievement, it’s unique in Germany’s history, it’s outstanding.”

The win came two days after Germany beat Spain 1-0 to win the European under-21 championship. “All the players who were in the squad were in a much better position than they were before,” said Loew.

He added that the final was a bruising match. “Our team had to fight hard because the Chileans are very robust players,” he said. “We have been literally fighting for every single ball.”

ST. PETERSBURG — Germany’s young players got a rough guide to winning a major tournament and proved up to the challenge in a physical Confederations Cup final that threatened to boil over on Sunday. A tough Chile side tried to intimidate the Germans in a forceful South American style not often seen in Europe.

Germany stood up to the test, defending an early lead for a bruising 1-0 win to accelerate its education ahead of its World Cup title defense.

“We’ve been literally fighting for every single ball, every single meter to defend our 1-0 lead,” said Germany coach Joachim Loew, describing Chile as “very robust.”

Loew’s instinct to protect his players in an aggressive second-half led him 10 meters (yards) on to the pitch when Emre Can was crowded by a group of Chileans.

The coach earlier saw one of his most inexperienced players, forward Timo Werner, felled by the left elbow of Gonzalo Jara.

The rugged defender got just a yellow card despite it seeming intentional on video replays that

were reviewed by the match officials. “I think if a referee sees that, he should and could have dismissed him,” said Loew.

A testy six-minute, secondhalf spell for Germany’s Joshua Kimmich saw the 22-year-old wing-back clash with his Bayern Munich teammate Arturo Vidal, get pushed by defender Gary Medel, whose nickname is “Pitbull,” and tangle with Jean Beausejour.

“The South Americans are playing very tough,” Germany defender Antonio Ruediger said.

Chile’s physical tactics did not stop when play paused and a Germany player ’s game was over. On being substituted late in the game, Werner and Leon Goretzka each got a shove to hurry them off by Medel and Jara, respectively.

A relative veteran at 23, Liverpool midfielder Can replaced Werner and soon got into a wrestling match with four Chile players. Can’s lone raid deep into Chile’s half ended when he fell

on the ball and held it tight. In the scramble that followed, Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo ran from his area to manhandle Can. Both were shown yellow cards.

The clash provoked Loew, who strode into the playing area trying to protect his grounded player, and was confronted by Medel.

“It’s a final and that’s the reason why the game is played at high intensity,” said Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi. “The players are nervous on the pitch and it’s difficult to control that sort of situation.”

Pizzi might have been sent into the stands after furiously demanding a video review from the fourth official after star forward Alexis Sanchez went down in the penalty area. Still, Germany’s two games in Russia against the battle-tested South American champion can only help preparations to return next year and defend their world title.

At this Confederations Cup, Germany beat teams of different styles from four continents and avoided the two Europeans, Russia and Portugal. “The guys are very young and we played as a team in all games,” Ruediger said. “It was not easy.”(ap)

Chile’s Confed Cup defeat hints at trouble ahead

ST. PETERSBURG — Chile’s players wanted to prove they were the world’s best, but instead showed they’re vulnerable. Since 2015, the Chileans have won two Copa Americas, and reached Sunday’s Confederations Cup final — a huge achievement for a country which had never before won a tournament.

They’re spectacular to watch, but Chile’s hard-charging style and three summers without rest and could leave players drained for next year’s World Cup — for which Chile is struggling to qualify. Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi wants his players to leave nothing in the tank.

“I was convinced that if we went back home with no energy left, we would be full of glory, and I thought we would we have the trophy,” he said after losing 1-0 to Germany in Sunday’s final.

“We go home with no energy, full of glory, but with no trophy.” Chile is all about overwhelming the opponent with intense, aggressive

pressure. It also works as a defensive tactic, giving opposing teams no time to build up dangerous attacks, such as when Chile won both of its Copa America titles on penalties after 0-0 draws.

There’s no Plan B, though, and Chile doesn’t respond well if the opposition scores first. Pizzi had claimed Chile would be so motivated by playing against Germany that it would make up for tired legs. Arturo Vidal pitched it as an unofficial world championship game, even though Germany left several star players at home.

Chile managed its usual fast start — but missed crucial chances — and bounced back in a secondhalf revival. After Lars Stindl scored following some Chile-style high pressing from the Germans, Chile looked frustrated. They had come back to win 2-1 against Australia in the group stage but Germany was a far trickier opponent and there was visible frustration. Vidal confronted Joshua Kimmich; Gonzalo Jara was lucky

to avoid a red card for elbowing Timo Werner.

Chile has high hopes for the World Cup, but the Confederations Cup has meant it once again lost weeks of crucial summer rest. Vidal has seemingly endless energy reserves, though the strain on his teammates is starting to show. The Chileans occupy the last of South America’s four automatic World Cup qualifying spots, but have Argentina and Ecuador close behind.

Further increasing the burden on tired legs, coach Juan Antonio Pizzi has few options to rotate players. Of Chile’s 12 substitutes for Sunday’s final, none play in European leagues. Age is a factor too — Chile’s 23-man Confederations Cup squad had just four players under the age of 26. None of them started more than one game.

Still, Pizzi has no intention of revising his approach. “We will try to keep this style of play,” he said. “We have fulfilled our commitment, we have followed our game plan, imposed our style.”(ap)

Chile’s Confed Cup defeat hints at trouble ahead

ST. PETERSBURG — Chile’s players wanted to prove they were the world’s best, but instead showed they’re vulnerable. Since 2015, the Chileans have won two Copa Americas, and reached Sunday’s Confederations Cup final — a huge achievement for a country which had never before won a tournament.

They’re spectacular to watch, but Chile’s hard-charging style and three summers without rest and could leave players drained for next year’s World Cup — for which Chile is struggling to qualify. Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi wants his players to leave nothing in the tank.

“I was convinced that if we went back home with no energy left, we would be full of glory, and I thought we would we have the trophy,” he said after losing 1-0 to Germany in Sunday’s final.

“We go home with no energy, full of glory, but with no trophy.” Chile is all about overwhelming the opponent with intense, aggressive

pressure. It also works as a defensive tactic, giving opposing teams no time to build up dangerous attacks, such as when Chile won both of its Copa America titles on penalties after 0-0 draws.

There’s no Plan B, though, and Chile doesn’t respond well if the opposition scores first. Pizzi had claimed Chile would be so motivated by playing against Germany that it would make up for tired legs. Chile managed its usual fast start — but missed crucial chances — and bounced back in a secondhalf revival. After Lars Stindl scored following some Chile-style high pressing from the Germans, Chile looked frustrated. Chile has high hopes for the World Cup, but the Confederations Cup has meant it once again lost weeks of crucial summer rest. Vidal has seemingly endless energy reserves, though the strain on his teammates is starting to show. The Chileans occupy the last of South America’s four automatic World Cup qualifying spots, but have Argentina and Ecuador close behind.

Further increasing the burden on tired legs, coach Juan Antonio Pizzi has few options to rotate players. Of Chile’s 12 substitutes for Sunday’s final, none play in European leagues. Age is a factor too — Chile’s 23-man Confederations Cup squad had just four players under the age of 26. None of them started more than one game.

Pushbikes can be hired at a few shops in Jungut Batu and some hotels may supply them for free. If this is all too much pedalling, you can do the same trip by motorbike.

You can easily rent a bicycle (typically from your hotel) and spend the day pottering round the island. End the day watching a game of competitive inter-village beach volleyball or head to the Mangrove bar at the northern end of the island with a floating pontoon in the middle of the mangroves (though this can be slightly disappointing at low tide).

SYDNEY - Australia’s Jeff Horn brushed aside the outcry against his shock victory over Manny Pacquiao on Monday and said he hoped taking the Filipino’s WBO welterweight title would help reinvigorate boxing Down Under.

The 29-year-old former schoolteacher was awarded a unanimous 12-round decision over the eight-division world champion after a bloody battle in front of more than 51,000 fans at Brisbane’s Lang Park on Sunday.

Not everybody was happy with the victory, awarded with scores of 117-111, 115-113 and 115113 by the three judges, and former undisputed world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was among those who disputed whether Horn should have won.

“There’s always going to be the backlash where people are going to say I lucky, or whatever,” Horn, his right eye swollen shut, told reporters in Brisbane on Monday.

“There’s always naysayers saying I didn’t win the fight. I think I won the fight, a lot of Queenslanders think I won the fight and people around the world.

So you will always have the select few that are against you.”

The critics of the decision pointed to the 182 to 92 punch count in favour of the Pacquiao, with some suggesting that Horn was awarded the victory for effort.

“This is what’s wrong with boxing,” Lewis tweeted. “Horn was a very game but I’m hard pressed to see how he could have won that fight by any stretch!”

LIEGE - Chris Froome got a brutal reminder of the unpredictable nature of the Tour de France when he crashed to the ground in Sunday’s second stage, recovering to finish with torn shorts as German Marcel Kittel powered to victory at the end of a huge sprint.

After being faster than his rivals in Saturday’s opening time trial, defending champion Froome was sitting comfortably near the front of the peloton when he was

brought down as a Katusha rider lost his balance in front of him some 30km from the finish.

“I have no injuries thankfully I’ve just lost a little bit of skin on my backside. That’s the nature of the race,” said Froome.

U.S. warship sails near disputed island in South China Sea

WASHINGTON - A U.S. warship sailed near a disputed island in the South China Sea claimed by China, Taiwan and Vietnam on Sunday in an operation meant to challenge the competing claims of all three nations, a U.S. Defense Department official said.

The USS Stethem, a guidedmissile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island, part of the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, the official said.

Indonesia sets tariff ranges for online car-hailing services

JAKARTA - Indonesia has set minimum and maximum tariffs for online car-hailing services, aiming to ensure comparable pricing with conventional transport providers whose drivers have complained about being undercut by their newer competitors. Ride-hailing services such as U.S. group Uber Technologies Inc, Southeast Asia’s Grab and Indonesia’s GO-JEK have heavily subsidised their drivers in Indonesia in order to gain market share in the country of 250 million people, analysts say.

The transport ministry said it had set a tariff range for online car-hailing services of 3,500-6,000 rupiah ($0.26-$0.45) per kilometre for the islands of Java, Bali and Sumatra. For Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Papua, the range is 3,700-6,500 rupiah per kilometre. The regulation kicked in on July 1 and will be evaluated in the next six months, the ministry said in a statement.

“There has to be a balance between conventional and online transport, so that has to be regulated,” Pudji Hartanto Iskandar, director-general of land transport at the ministry, told Reuters by phone.

Indonesia’s two biggest established taxi operators are PT Blue Bird Tbk and PT Express Transindo Utama Tbk , whose shares have fallen on investor concerns about competition from the cheaper ride-hailing services. Drivers of Blue Bird and Express have called for a ban on ride-hailing services, claiming they were subject to less stringent requirements than conventional taxis.

Uber said in an emailed statement it had yet to receive a copy of Indonesia’s regulations. “However, we remain committed to working with the government to find a path forward that accommodates the interests of riders and driver partners and supports innovation, competition and customer choice,” Uber said. 18 feared dead in fiery Bavarian bus crash

BERLIN (AP) — Eighteen people are feared dead after a bus carrying a group of German senior citizens crashed into a truck on a highway in Bavaria early Monday and burst into flames, police said.

Thirty people were injured in the early-morning accident, some seriously, while 18 still considered missing “are believed to have died on the burning bus,” police said in a statement.

Authorities said that forensic specialists were being brought in from Germany’s federal police office to remove and identify the bodies from the charred vehicle. Police spokeswoman Irene Brandenstein said the work was slow and labor intensive given how badly damaged the bus was by the fire.

“The investigation of the ac-

cident is very complex and timeconsuming,” Brandenstein told The Associated Press.

The accident took place around 7 a.m. (0500GMT) when the bus rear-ended the trailer-truck at the end of a traffic jam on the A9 highway near Muenchberg in Bavaria, not far from the Czech border. The highway remained closed on both sides for hours and police tweeted later that the road leading south would be shut down for the entire day.

Several helicopters, firefighters and ambulances were on the scene

to rescue the injured.

Two drivers and 46 passengers were on the bus, Brandenstein said.

By the time firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames, the bus a black, smoking skeleton.

Police said that the group on the bus came from Saxony in eastern Germany and that no children were on the bus. The German news agency dpa reported that all passengers were German citizens.

A phone number was activated to provide family members with information. Brandenstein had no immediate information on the condition of the truck driver.

The accident led to long traffic jams on the A9, which is the main thoroughfare from Berlin to Munich. (ap)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has given praise to young businessmen who promote local products. “I have much appreciation to young men who have successfully developed local brands or traditional brands,” he said when visiting a coffee shop on Cipete Raya, with his family here on Sunday.

The head of press, media and information of the presidential secretariat, Bey Machmudin, in a press release, said that the President had given praise to the coffee shop owned by Andanu Prasetyo or Tyo as he is also called for using local coffee beans for his coffee products. Jokowi accompanied by First Lady Iriana, daughter Kahiyang Ayu and son Kaesang Pangarep arrived at the coffee shop at 11.30am and welcomed personally by its owner. He stayed at the coffee shop for 30 minutes.

While queuing Jokowi asked the cashier about the best coffee sold and was told by the owner that it was “the neigjbors coffee milk,” and so he ordered it.

Jokowi and Iriana then sat at the corner of the shop to chat with Tyo. “Only one coffee drink used to be known by the public before which is black coffee but now there are a lot of varieties,” Iriana said.

At around 12.00 hours Jokowi and family left the shop and proceeded to a restaurant in North Jakarta for lunch and after that he stopped by at Kemayoran to buy traditional Betawi (Jakarta) food known as “kerak telor” which is made of egg. Aid helicopter crash kills 8 after Indonesian volcano erupts

JAKARTA — A rescue helicopter crashed while heading to help evacuate residents near an active volcano on Indonesia’s main island, killing all eight people on board, officials said Monday. The helicopter crashed about three minutes before arriving at Dieng Plateau, the popular tourist area where the volcanic eruption Sunday injured at least 10 people. The aircraft reportedly hit a cliff on Butak Mountain in the Temanggung district of Central Java province.

All eight people on board were killed, said Maj. Gen. Heronimus Guru, deputy operations chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency. He told The Associated Press, “We are now at the Bhayangkara Hospital in Semarang,” the Central Java provincial capital where the victims’ bodies were taken.

Brig. Gen. Ivan Tito, director of operation and training at the search agency, told TVOne station in a live interview from Temanggung, that the victims were four navy officers and four rescuers. He also said the Indonesian-made Dauphin AS365 helicopter was airworthy.

The Sileri Crater at Dieng Plateau spewed cold lava, mud and ash as high as 50 meters (164 feet) into the sky when it erupted Sunday morning, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. The sudden eruption occurred while about 17 visitors were around the crater.

Ten people were injured and were treated at a hospital.

Soldiers and police officers were dispatched and local residents and visitors were asked to evacuate in case of further eruptions, Nugroho said. The crater appeared to be quieter Monday morning, and all visitors to the

plateau have been evacuated.

Sileri is the most active and dangerous among some 10 craters at Dieng Plateau. Its most recent eruption was in 2009, when it unleashed volcanic materials up to 200 meters (656 feet) high and triggered the creation of three new craters.

Dieng Plateau, located in the Central Java district of Banjarnegara, is a popular tourist attraction because of its cool climate and ninth-century Hindu temples. It sits about 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) above sea level.

Some 142 people were reportedly asphyxiated in 1979 when the volcano spewed gases.(ap)

BUSINESS Why market competition has not brought down health care costs

It is easier than ever to buy stuff. You can purchase almost anything on Amazon with a click, and it is only slightly harder to find a place to stay in a foreign city on Airbnb. So why can’t we pay for health care the same way?

My research into the economics of health care suggests we should be able to do just that, but only if we say goodbye to our current system of private insurance – and the heavy administrative burden that goes along with it. Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would take us in the wrong direction.

What makes health care so complicated In a way, the reason buying health care is different than shopping for a garden gnome or short-term apartment seems obvious. Picking the right doctor, for example, involves a lot more anxiety and uncertainty and concerns matters of life and death.

But that’s not really the reason we can’t purchase health care the same way we buy an iPhone. In 1969, this would almost be true (for a rotary phone anyway). Back then, the bill for a birth in a New Jersey hospital looked a lot like the receipt you’d get for buying pretty much anything else: customer name, amount and a box to be checked for payment by check, charge or money order. Today, paying for even the simplest office visit can become a nightmare, requiring insurance preauthorization, reimbursements adjusted for in-network or out-of-network copays and deductibles and the physician “tier” (or how your prospective doctor is evaluated for cost and quality by the insurance company).

Prescriptions require even more authorizations, while follow-up care necessitates coordinated review – and it goes without saying that many forms will have to be completed. And this doesn’t end when you arrive at the doctor’s office. A large chunk of any visit is spent with a beleaguered nurse, or even the physician, filling out a required checklist of insurancemandated questions. The growing

We can blame a significant part of the soaring cost of health care on the ever-increasing burden of administrative complexity, whose cost has climbed at a pace of more than 10 percent a year since 1971 and now consumes over 4 percent of GDP, up from less than 1 percent back then.

Lemons and cherries So if the rising cost of adminis-

tration is a primary force driving health care inflation, why don’t we do something about it? That’s because administrative complexity and waste are no accident but rather are baked into our private health insurance system and made worse by continuing attempts to use competitive market processes to achieve social ends other than maximizing profit. Paying a doctor was relatively simple in the 1960s.

Most people had the same insurance policy, issued by Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which back then was a private company but operated like a non-profit under strict regulation.

But in hopes of controlling

steadily rising costs, policymakers encouraged insurers besides Blue Cross to enter health insurance markets, beginning with the HMO Act of 1973. The proliferation of for-profit companies with competing plans raised billing costs for health care providers, which now had to submit claims to a multitude of different insurers, each with its own codes, forms and regulations. Not only that, but insurers quickly discovered the dirty secret of health care finance: Sick people are expensive and make up most costs, while healthy people are profitable.

In other words, the vital lesson for an insurer looking to make

money is to identify the few sick people and get them to go away (“lemon dropping”) and find the healthy majority and do things that attract them to your plan (“cherry picking”).

Insurers are happy to offer discounts on fitness club memberships to attract healthy people, for example. But they punish the sick with higher copays and deductibles, as well as increasingly restrictive and intrusive regulations on preauthorization. Economists call it adverse selection. Regular people call it paperwork hell. Whatever the name, it’s the purpose of increasingly complicated insurance plans and reimbursement forms.(rtr)

Saraswati Day, Worship God as Creator of Science

Hindu community in Bali will celebrate Saraswati feast day on Saturday and Banyupinaruh Day on Sunday. Both feast days fall every six months (210 days). Saraswati Day falling on Saniscara Umanis Watugunung aims to worship the Goddess Saraswati as the creator of science.

On that day, pupils, college students, teachers, lecturers, priests and other Hindu communities perform worship. All manuscripts mainly palm-leaf manuscripts, the Vedas, religious literature and books as source of knowledge are consecrated and given the offerings.

By and large, books are consecrated on satvika time when the sun rises.

At that time, the atmosphere is very calm and sunny.

In the meantime, rajasika time (noon, turbulent time) and tamasika time (evening, time of dimmer) are considered not good. “Goddess Saraswati is symbolized as a very beautiful and charming goddess.

This implies that science is beautiful because it can lead humans to perfect well-being,” said Jero Mangku Ketut Arthana.

Goddess Saraswati has four hands and each carries beads (rosary), manuscript, veena (musical instrument) and kumbhaja (lotus).

Besides, she also has vehicle in the form of lotus accompanied by peacock and swan. “On the Saraswati day, Hindu devotees are generally not allowed to read a book as they are carrying abstinence of Saraswati in the low, intermediate and high level,” he said.

For Hindus, the Saraswati feast day is the coming down of science celebrated by the presentation of

offerings and worship to God as an expression of gratitude. In a series of the ceremony, devotees prepare herbal drink and pradnyan rice.

Eating the rice and consuming the herbal drink symbolize to experience the ups and down of life. “By bringing together all the flavors, it is believed to create a peaceful mind,” he said.

Balinese community celebrates Saraswati uniquely because on the next day there is also a series of ceremony. They consist of Banyupinaruh on Redite (Sunday) Paing. “Banyupinaruh is derived from two words, namely banyu meaning ‘water’ and pinaruh meaning keweruhan or knowledge coming down on the previous day (on Saraswati) to be distributed to all parties. If developed well, it will be more beneficial,” he explained.

At the ceremony of Banyupinaruh, devotees flock the springs or water sources to do self-purification. The springs means the source where the water flows from, they may be shower, lakes or seas. On that account, young people today take advantage of the Banyupinaruh feast day to travel with friends, family and girlfriend or boyfriend.

Saraswati, Banyu Pinaruh, Soma Ribek on Monday (Jan. 23) and Pagerwesi on Buda Kliwon Sinta,

Wednesday (Jan. 25) has close relationship to Saraswati. Celebration of the Saraswati is closely associated with Pagerwesi. If on Saraswati day the Hindus worship the Goddess Saraswati as the goddess blessing the science, in the next morning they perform Banyu Pinaruh.

This holy day has a philosophy

that science flows like water and cools down humans so that they need to learn it in depth. On this day, devotees do self-purification with a shower and shampoo in source of holy water such as lakes, ocean or tributaries.

After the Banyupinaruh is Soma Ribek, meaning that when humans have already obtained the knowl-

edge and possessed skills, they will be very valuable when they are used positively in order to bring in changes to society. Ultimately, Pagerwesi is a celebration after humans apply their knowledge so that they can become quality teachers (role model) in delivering their knowledge to the broadest community. (kmb)

Betel Nut Box, a Tradition of the Elderly when Receiving Guests Nampin or chewing betel leaves is one of the traditions that remains strong amongst Balinese elders.

According to one respected elder named Ni Ketut Darma, who still chews betel leaves everyday, tradtionally the ingredients for betwel chewing are kept in a special betel nut box called pabuan or pecanangan. “When we use this box at home we call it pabuan, but when we serve guests we call this penginangan, using more refined language” she explained.

According to Grandma Darma, the betel nut box is made of wood in the long side shape where it generally consists of some compartments containing lime, betel leaves, gam-

bier, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle or panyawisan, small knife, and caket (used to halve areca nut).

She said that in the past the betel nut box was the first thing to be served to guests who came or when visiting other people’s homes.

“Presenting betel nut box and nampin has become a tradition in the life of Balinese people, until now this tradition remains to be implemented especially by parents like me,” she said.

She added the betel nut box is not only served at home, but also at temple with a different designation. At temple, it is called pacanangan, functioned as the offerings presented to deities. Pabuan

and pacanangan is basically not the same. Pabuan served at home usually contains lime, gambier, betel leaf, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle, small knife, and caket, while the pecanangan at temple has the same contents with additional ingredients like thread, money and fruits.

When asked about how she feels when doing nampin, she just claimed to be accustomed to doing it. Men and women of her age usually do it. It is tasteless but the lips feel abrasive. It feels nothing due to the mixture with lime. “Our lips are abrasive, but I have been accustomed to the taste,” she said. (kmb)

Eid holiday ends, passengers start to leave Bali

Five days after Eid, on Saturday (Jul. 1), the number of domestic arrivals reached 16,401 passengers showing a 15.74 percent increase over last year when there were only 14,171 passengers. The number of domestic departures amounted to 19,330 passengers, an increase of 7.29 percent when compared to last year’s 18,017 passengers.

There was also a 18. 72 percent increase in passengers on international flights departing, with a total of 17,920 passengers compared to last year’s 15,082 passengers flying overseas.

Thailand’s new labour rules send thousands of migrant workers fleeing

BANGKOK - Tens of thousands of workers have fled Thailand, most of them for homes in neighbouring Myanmar, immigration officials said on Monday, after new labour regulations adopted by the military government sparked fear and panic among the migrant community.

DENPASAR — The national economy continues to stagnate and has major impacts on the development of regional economies and Denpasar is no exception. There have, for example been no major investments made in Denpasar in 2017. Any major projects are only continuations of ones started previously.

Head of the Denpasar Investment and Integrated Licensing Office (PM and PPTSP), I Made Kusuma Diputra said on Sunday (Jul. 2) that medium scale development is also scare. This can be seen from the lack of building permits (IMB) being requested by real estate developers. In previous years, many permits requests were already being submitted by this time of year.

Duputra added, however, that the number of requests for building permits for residential homes

remains stable though not considerable. He therefore predicts that the cost of building permits will not go up this year. “Fortunately, because Bali is a tourist destination, other sectors can be relied on to generate local revenue”, he said.

The generally weak economy is also evident in the Municipality of Denpasar’s low target for their income for building permits. In the regional budget for 2017, they have drafted the same target as last year, namely IDR 14.8 billion.

The hotel and restaurant tax levied by the Denpasar revenue services during the period of JanuaryMarch 2017 showed an increase compared to the same period last year.

Head of the Denpasar Revenue Services, Dewa Semadi, conveyed that in January 2017 the hotel taxes amounted to IDR 12.8 billion, showing an increase over

the IDR 11.9 million collected in 2016.

In February 2017, IDR 11.7 billion had been collected, while in 2016 only 10.5 billion was collected for the same period. Only in March was there a slight decrease when IDR 10,255,324,378 in taxes were collected compared to the IDR 10,277,324. 724 for March 2016.

Dewa Semadi added that restaurant tax in January 2017 reached IDR 7.5 billion and in 2016 amounted to approximately IDR 9.3 billion. Then, in February 2017 it successfully increased by IDR 8.3 billion, an increase when compared to 2016 only reaching IDR 6.4 billion.

In March 2017, it could be realized as much as IDR 7.2 billion, a sharp increase when compared to 2016 only reaching IDR 6.5 billion. (kmb12)

Millions of workers from poor neighbours, such as Cambodia and Myanmar, form the backbone of Thailand’s manual labour force, with industries such as the multibillion-dollar seafood business heavily reliant on foreign workers.

Since taking power in a 2014 coup, Thailand’s ruling junta has attained varying degrees of success in campaigns to regulate the foreign workforce, spurred partly by media reports that unregulated workers faced exploitation by employers.

About 60,000 workers left between June 23 and 28, and the number has risen since, an Immigration Bureau official said.

“They were of all nationalities, but the biggest group was from Myanmar,” Deputy Commissioner Pornchai Kuntee told Reuters.

“They are probably very scared.”

Following news of the exodus, Thailand on Friday promised a 120-day delay in enforcing parts of the decree, including fines that can range up to 800,000 baht ($23,557) for employers who hire unregistered foreign workers without permits.

Geta Devi, 28, a Myanmar worker based in Bangkok, said some of her friends panicked over the decree, adding, “They went back to Myanmar.”

Thai government trucks have been taking workers to the Myanmar town of Myawaddy, 246 km (153 miles) east of Yangon, and located opposite the Thai town of Mae Sot, to be handed to Myanmar authorities, a Myanmar official said.

It was unclear if they were leaving Thailand voluntarily.

Since June 29, more than 16,000 people have returned home, Aung Htay Win, a labour ministry official who is coordinating Myanmar’s response, told Reuters.

The figure included both legal and undocumented migrants fearing a crackdown, as well as some ordered home by employers, he said.

“Most of them stay for one night or so, then they continue to their home towns,” he said, adding the workers were being temporarily housed in government buildings.

China’s new heavy-lift rocket launch fails in flight

The same rocket type had been expected to take China’s latest lunar probe to the Moon this year and to return with samples. It is not clear how the timetable for that mission could be affected by the

failed launch.

President Xi Jinping has prioritised advancing China’s space programme to strengthen national security and defence, and the government has stressed it is a purely

peaceful initiative.

“An anomaly occurred during the flight of the rocket,” Xinhua said after the rocket blasted off early evening from the southern island province of Hainan.

“Further investigation will be carried out,” it said, without elaborating.

China’s space programme has largely operated without many

major hitches, though it still has a way to go to catch up with the United States and Russia.

In late 2013, China’s Jade Rabbit moon rover landed on the Moon to great national fanfare, but ran into severe technical difficulties.

The U.S. Defense Department has highlighted China’s increasing space capabilities, saying it was pursuing activities aimed at pre-

venting other nations from using space-based assets in a crisis.

China is preparing to send a man to the Moon, state media cited a senior space official as saying last month.

Rare butterfly thrives on, and because of, US military bases BOSTON — In the shadow of giant war machines, a tiny rare butterfly is flourishing. Oddly, experts say, the U.S. military gets the credit.

The frosted elfin, which flutters along on a 1-inch (2.5 centimeters) wingspan, has found a home at several defense installations because of the way the military manages open spaces, said Robyn Niver, an endangered species biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“Military training requires vast open areas, so these bases are some of our last great wild places,” Niver said.

The little brown butterfly has been confirmed at Westover Air Reserve Base and Camp Edwards in Massachusetts; Fort McCoy in

Wisconsin; Fort Bragg in North Carolina; and the New Hampshire State Military Reservation, she said.

The common thread among the bases is the way they manage vegetation through controlled burns, which create the perfect conditions for wild blue lupine and indigo to grow, the frosted elfin caterpillar’s two host plants.

The dainty butterflies were first spotted at Westover in Chicopee, Massachusetts, about 20 years ago, according to Jack Moriarty, the base’s chief of environmental engineering.

Proper vegetation control is critical for the safety of the massive C5 military transport aircraft that call the base home. If the vegetation

is cut too short, it attracts geese and gulls, increasing the risk of aircraft strikes. If it is allowed to grow too tall, turkeys, deer, and coyotes move in. Lupine and indigo are just the right height.

Although there have been anecdotal reports of its presence in the past, the frosted elfin was confirmed at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod just this spring, said Jake McCumber, the Massachusetts Army National Guard’s natural resources manager.

“It was pretty exciting. I was thrilled,” he said. “Our grasslands are in the headquarters area, so it’s probably the busiest part of the base.”

Economic factors are putting increasing pressure on people to focus on the short term rather than the long term of all three of these relationships, with results that range anywhere from uncomfortable to seriously problematic, to near disastrous. Perhaps by looking at how farming, tourism and traditional ceremonies can interact with each other in mutually supportive ways, harmony can more easily be achieved and the driving force of the economy can work in everyone’s favour, instead of working to everyone’s detriment.

Many young Balinese people however, are preferring to find work in the tourism industry which appears to be easier and able to provide a more stable income than farming and crafting (that often accompanies farming). Selling off farmlands to make room for tourist accommodations, is also increasingly common as it provides farmers and others with instant mobility. Religious life and the elaborate ceremonies -which are a big part of why people come to Bali, are also intimately tied to agriculture and thus also affected by the same pressures.

Although the relationship between tourism, farming and ceremonies is varied and complex, there are some simple things that can have significant positive impacts such as economically supporting the crucial role that farmers play.

Ketut Arimbawa was born and raised in the area of Subak Pulangan by a family who farmed large swaths of land there. As a young man he moved to Europe with his French wife Adriana where they had two children. Their children are now school aged and when asked why their family had decided to move back to Bali, they explained that despite many of the advantages of living in France, such as free high quality education and health care, they felt that the the cultural and natural environment of Bali were of immeasurable value in terms of raising their children.

They have opened a small restaurant in front of their home on Jalan Dr. Soekarna (AKA Jl. Raya Tampaksiring) near Gunung Kawi, that serves truly delicious Indonesian and French food and Adriana has started making her own organic chocolate. While Adriana does all

the cooking for Bistro Tampaksiring, Ketut provides the ingredients from his organic vegetable garden that he planted on his ancestral land.

Ketut is one of the only people in the area to be growing vegetables so his neighbours have taken notice and a few have even followed suite.

Although he remains the only one to have a full garden, Ketut is enthusiastic about encouraging the young people from his village to value the land that has been bequeathed to them.

Ketut’s land lies adjacent to spectacular rice fields that make up part of Subak Pulangan that was named a world intangible heritage

by UNESCO recently. This status has yet to have much impact practically speaking but does highlight the tremendous value of maintaining this green space and the sacred waters that feed it.

Ketut sometimes provides walking tours to introduce tourists to some of Bali’s tremendous cultural, spiritual and agricultural heritage but his vision is to encourage local young people to appreciate this wealth as he did with renewed vigour upon his return from abroad.

Abe-do is another small restaurant that serves organic food as well as special juices. Nyoman Sukerta started this small business with his wife Sri after she was cured of severe illness by drinking traditional medicinal herbal mixtures and eating whole foods. Nyoman gave up painting to share healthy food with the public and with just IDR 2 million opened this restaurant that serves traditional herbal drinks, healthy Indonesian and Balinese dishes as well as an array of fresh garden salads.

Located as they are on Jalan Tirta Tawar not too far from downtown Ubud, tourists started coming to eat here. A few tourists offered to help with online marketing and now Nyoman and his wife can work from home allowing them to maintain their demanding ceremonial schedule.

Fresh organic vegetables are delivered to Abe-do everyday by Mr. Hartono, whose organic farm is located less than a kilometre away on Jalan Sri Wedari. The plot of land that Mr. Hartono farms is located in between a growing number of villas and across the

street from Gede Sayur’s infamous “NOT FOR SALE” installation in the rice paddies.

Set some distance from the remaining green spaces of Ubud right in the heart of Bali’s cultural tourism centre, is landmark organic health food restaurant Soma. The large volume of food (including coconuts) required by Soma every-

day not only supports local organic farmers but also provides a space for harmony to flourish.

Owner and local legend Om Johnny has made harmony his life’s mission. Not only are his fair number of staff taught about the benefits of organic food, clean water and small footprint practices, but they are also encouraged to think long term about their own lives and that of their social, cultural and physical environment too.

On any given day this oasis of calm in the bustle of downtown Ubud is filled to capacity at peak dinning hours, and yet his staff are

encouraged to take the time they need to attend to their well-being and religious obligations. As Om Johnny says: “it is better to have a few less hands on deck than than to have people working who are not happy”.

Soma, Abe-do and Bistro Tampaksiring’s substantial client base, that is made up largely of foreign visitors looking for local sustainably sourced organic food and spiritual tranquility, bears witness the overwhelming demand for Tri Hitta Karana based tourism in Bali and shines a light for better future for all. BAF improves livelihoods

DENPASAR —The Bali Arts Festival (BAF) features Balinese arts performances and also provides a space for Balinese small and medium industries (SMI) to show of their artisanal products.

This year’s BAF has proven to be especially profitable compared to previous years.

Head of the Bali Culture Office, Dewa Putu Beratha, recently explained that the artisans who participated in this BAF are pleased about being able to showcase their crafts to the public.

Vendors of culinary delights have also been pleased with the event as most of them said that they were sold out by 20:00. “Warung Be Genyol sold as much as IDR 10 million per day”, said Beratha.

These successes show that the current national economic slump has not affected the BAF. In fact, the idea of inviting Balinese artisans and SMEs to participate in the BAF is part of efforts being made to stimulate local and rural economies.

As of June 30, 2017, the turnover of BAF sales had reached IDR 8.9 billion. Metallic items showed the highest turnover with sales of IDR 3.2 billion. This was followed by textile products which sold IDR 967,900,000, Dekranasda sold IDR 576,714,000 worth of merchandise, wood crafts IDR 487,043,000, rattan, bamboo, palm leaf and other crafts sold IDR 106,680,000, leather goods sold IDR 40,695,000 worth and miscellaneous other crafts have sold a total of IDR 3.5 billion. Beratha says that he hopes to see great sales figures continuing to increase through the last week of the BAF. Owner of Vajra Silver, Mahadev Sugianti, said that the BAF is a great event for showcasing her new products. Their most popular items she explained, are the more expensive silver jewelry. In addition to selling Balinese earrings, Vajra Silver also sells brooches that range in price from IDR 100,000 to IDR 4.5 million and rings that sell for anywhere from IDR 50,000 to IDR 1 million.

After participating in the BAF three times, Sugianti said that she has learned the importance of constantly coming up with innovative products. She designs all her accessories herself while the craftsmanship is done by metal smiths. She has some of her own in-house craftsmen but she also provides work for freelance craftsmen. DENPASAR —Bali is increasingly resonant with tourists from all over the world, especially after visits from international figure such as Saoudi Arabia’s King Salman and Prince, the former US President Barack Obama and family, and the Prime Minister of Malaysia who all chose to holiday in Bali.

Not only does Bali host such illustrious figures as these, the Island of the Gods also hosts international conferences attended by world political leaders, MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibition) events for various organizations and professional associations of various fields, and is also a popular destination for celebrity weddings and honeymoons as well as national and world class athletes.

Anom added that he hopes to see various kinds of tourism including

educational tourism, health tourism and other types being developed in Bali. Al of these he emphasized, must contribute to maintaining the environment, nature and culture of Bali. Local Balinese must also be able to maintain their identity that includes tolerance for diversity, without having their religious beliefs shaken. Thus, Bali can remain a source of inspiration for tolerance in the world. Tourism activities contain the values tolerance and diversity.

International legal observer Dewa Gede Sudika Mangku expressed similar opinions. Visits to Bali by important dignitaries he said, are good for tourism in Bali in particular and Indonesia in general.

Former US president Obama’s visit, he added provides a breath of fresh air for the development of tourism in Bali and is positive for diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the United States.(win)

LOS ANGELES - The tiny, yellow, animated blobs have done it again. Illumination and Universal’s “Despicable Me 3” is cruising to an easy box office win during a busy holiday weekend. The latest in the franchise is opening to $75.4 million from 4,529 locations -- the widest domestic release ever. That total is lower than earlier estimates, which pegged the film above $80 million (earlier tracking suggested it could land even higher), but nevertheless it remains the weekend’s big winner.

Steve Carell plays double duty in “Despicable Me 3” as the series’ protagonist Gru, and now also his twin brother, Dru. The plot centers on the brothers, as they team up for a criminal heist. “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker joins the franchise to voice the villain. Critics are generally on the movie’s side, earning it a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie earned an ACinemaScore from audiences, which is lower than the A earned by the first two installments and “Minions.”

“With these characters that have reached a level of ubiquity in our culture, these movies continue to create this want to see,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief, who added, “I think we have the best marketing group in the business.”

Despite “Despicable’s” rule, perhaps the more interesting stories for

the industry reside further down the box office chart.

Starting with “Baby Driver,” from Sony’s TriStar Pictures, MRC, and Working Title. Edgar Wright’s latest also appears to be his biggest box office hit, as it’s cruising to $30 million from 3,226 locations -- that’s including the $5.7 million head start the movie got by opening early in previews on Tuesday.

The movie centers around a character named Baby (Ansel Elgort), who becomes the getaway driver for a kingpin named Doc (Kevin Spacey). Music plays an integral role in the film since Baby suffered a traumatic experience as a child that left him with tinnitus, which he blocks out with music. The rest of the cast includes Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzalez, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Foxx. (rtr)

Kensington Palace says young royals to go on Europe tour

LONDON — Kensington Palace says the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will take Prince George and Princess Charlotte along when they tour Germany and Poland.

The palace says in a statement Monday that the five-day tour beginning July 17 in Warsaw will feature appearances by the children.

The trip is being seen as an effort to bolster Britain’s goodwill ties with Europe amid negotiations to leave the European Union.

The palace says the royals are looking “forward to a busy and impactful tour,” and are happy as a family to meet “such important friends of the United Kingdom.”

Prince William and the former Kate Middleton also took George, 3, and Charlotte, 2, on an official tour to Canada last year. (ap)

Saudi Arabia, allies give Qatar two more days to accept demands

DUBAI/DOHA - Four Arab states which accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism agreed to extend until late on Tuesday a deadline for Doha to comply with a list of demands, as U.S. President Donald Trump voiced concern to both sides about the dispute. Qatar has called the charges baseless and says the demands, including closing Qatar-based al Jazeera TV and ejecting Turkish troops based there, are so severe that they seem intended to be rejected.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have raised the possibility of further sanctions against Qatar if it does not comply with the 13 demands presented to Doha through Kuwait, which is acting as a mediator. According to a joint statement on Saudi state news agency SPA, the four countries agreed to a request

by Kuwait to extend by 48 hours Sunday’s deadline for compliance.

They have not specified what further sanctions they could impose on Doha, but commercial bankers in the region believe that Saudi, Emirati and Bahraini banks might receive official guidance to pull deposits and interbank loans from Qatar. Foreign ministers from the four countries will meet in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss Qatar, Egypt said, while Arab media reported that Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman

al-Thani arrived in Kuwait on Monday to deliver Doha’s formal response to the Arab demands.

The four states cut diplomatic and commercial ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of supporting terrorism, meddling in their internal affairs and advancing the agenda of regional foe Iran, all of which Qatar denies.

Mediation efforts, including by the U.S., have been fruitless. Trump spoke separately to the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in the UAE to discuss his “concerns about the ongoing dispute”, the White House said.

“He reiterated the importance of stopping terrorist financing and discrediting extremist ideology. The president also underscored that unity in the region is critical to accomplishing the Riyadh Summit’s goals of defeating terrorism and promoting regional stability,” the White House said.

“President Trump, nevertheless, believes that the overriding objective of his initiative is the cessation of funding for terrorism,” it said. On Monday, Trump tweeted: “Spoke yesterday with the King of Saudi Arabia about peace in the Middle-East. Interesting things are happening!”

URGING RESTRAINT A State Department official said on Sunday that the United States encourages “all parties to exercise restraint to allow for productive diplomatic discussions.”
