Lohan sues over ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ game

NEW YORK) — Adam Levine knows pop stars-turned-actors are greeted suspiciously. And he’s hesitant to make any grandiose declarations about suddenly transforming into an actor. But he also can’t help himself.

Following his movie debut in the recently released “Begin Again,” the Maroon 5 frontman is exuberant about a potentially budding movie career.

“It really made me fall in love,” said Levine about “Begin Again” in a recent interview. “It’s the very beginning of something really cool.”

The transition is unusually seamless for Levine in “Begin Again,” a naturalistic indie about musicians in New York by “Once” director John Carney. Levine plays an aspiring musician, the boyfriend to a singersongwriter played by Keira Knightley. But it’s his breakthrough that’s brought them to New York, and his fast-growing fame pulls the couple apart.

“I had been through that before, maybe not the same version,” says Levine of the tumult of sudden fame. “That’s what connected me to this guy. I immediately understood exactly what needed to be done with this character just based on my life’s experience.”

The 35-year-old Levine grew up in Los Angeles, so acting in movies was, he says, always “somewhere in the back of my mind.” Carney approached him about the film and Levine jumped at the chance, working for little pay.

“I knew that I would try doing it,” he says. “Because of the other wonderful things that have happened in my life and my career, I’d been given the opportunity to try

it. I thought to myself, ‘Well, I’m going to try it. I’m not going to not try it.’”

Levine, of course, is familiar with working in front of the camera. Aside from music videos for Maroon 5 and a cameo on “30 Rock,” he’s been a judge on NBC’s “The Voice” since 2011. He also played an arc as a newlywed visiting an insane asylum on FX’s “American Horror Story” in 2012.

“He’s so confident and he’s such a natural entertainer and he’s very comfortable on camera because he does that show and he’s made lots of music videos,” says Knightley.

NEW YORK — Lindsay Lohan is suing the makers of the “Grand Theft Auto” video games. The actress says the latest installment used her image and created a character based on her without her permission. named Lacey Jonas is an “unequivocal” reference to the “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday” star.

The suit says Lohan’s image, voice and styles from her clothing line are depicted. It says the game features West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont hotel, where Lohan once lived.

The character also seeks help skirting paparazzi.

DENPASAR - The Ngurah Rai International Airport of Bali recorded a 1.02 percent increase in the number of outgoing international flights in May, 2014.

In May there were 2,169 international flights from Ngurah Rai, up from 2,147 flights in the previous months, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said.

“The wide bodied aircraft carried 323,569 foreign tourists after enjoying their holidays in Bali, up 4.41 percent from 309,896 in April,” head of the regional office of BPS Panusunan Siregar said on Wednesday.

He said Bali as the main tourist destination in Indonesia recorded growing number of foreign visitors.

In the first five months of 2014, there were already 1.39 million foreign visitors to Bali or an increase of

14.82 percent from 1.21 million in the same period last year.

Most of the holiday makers came to Bali via the Ngurah Rai airport, directly from their respective countries, Siregar said, adding only 17,394, who are passenger of tourist boats, entered Bali via seaport.

Siregar said the increase in the number of visitors was also followed with an increase in baggage hat rose 4.27 percent to 4,252 tons in May from 4,079 tons in April. The volume of cargoes, however, declined 12.14 percent to 2,181.3 tons from 2,482.8 tons.

Siregar said a significant increase was also recorded in domestic flights, up 8.15 percent to 3,411 flights.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers in sea transport leaving Bali also increase 12.76 percent to 164,085 people in May from 145,514 in April.

The ships carried 161,217 tons of cargoes or an increase of 7.20 percent from 150,392 tons in April, Siregar said.

A month, dozens kg of drugs smuggled into Kerobokan Prison Bali Post

DENPASAR - Drug smuggling into the Kerobokan Prison (Prison of Class II A Denpasar) is getting more worrying. It was proved by two smuggling cases, namely a raid and a delivery directed to Kerobokan Prison in June 2014. The drug evidence secured included 32.4 kg of marijuana, 100 grams of crystal meth and seven packages of new drug, Ajapa-japa. However, none of the perpetrators in the Kerobokan Prison could have been detected.

It began from the smuggling that would be committed by two men from East Java named Ahmad Imron Rosidi, 34, and Juwarso, 26, Saturday (Jun 7). Unmitigatedly, dried marijuana weighing 3 kg was about to be smuggled into Kerobokan Prison. The goods of perpetrator were put in a red large plastic bag where at the top were placed fresh vegetables, tomatoes and carrots. When searched, at the bottom was found a thick bundle tightened with brown tape. Having been checked, in fact, the officers found dried marijuana and a bottle of liquor.

The Badung Police Narcotics Unit conducting a development against the smuggling into the Kerobokan Prison encountered 15.3 kg of marijuana wrapped in 16 packs in a dorm room located on Jalan Tukad Ciliwung, Kerta Sari hamlet, Panjer village, South Denpasar. On the whole, a total of 18.3 kg of dried marijuana has been secured in the Badung Police Headquarters.

In another case, the officers of North Kuta Police arrested Raden

Mohamad Zein Akasa, 29, Sunday (Jun 22) who would smuggle drugs into the Kerobokan Prison.

From the hands of perpetrator, the officers seized evidence in the form of a Smartfren hand phone, an iPhone, a Nokia hand phone as well as seven packages of marijuana and an unpacked package.

Even, there was an allegation if the seven packages of marijuana belonged to a new type with the brand of Ajapa-Japa.

Another interesting case was the drug smuggling reportedly controlled by a prisoner in the Kerobokan Prison. The two perpetrators consisting of Alexander S, 33, and Franky Kesauliya Kalumata, 46, were arrested by the officers of Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit, Tuesday (Jun 17).

Both suspects confessed that the delivery of marijuana weighing 14.1 kg was from Medan to Bali under the control of a drug dealer with the initials GW remaining to crouch in Kerobokan Prison.

The suspect Alexander admitted that he took the marijuana as commanded by his friend with the

initials GW known in Kerobokan Prison. Then, GW ordered the suspect to take the marijuana from a courier from Medan. If the suspect could do it, he would be paid as much as IDR 2 million. “I was just ordered by him (GW—Ed) to pick up a suitcase containing marijuana in front of the mosque in Kediri, Tabanan, sent from Medan by bus,” he said.

Besides, Alexander admitted to know GW when he was a prisoner in the Kerobokan Prison for his involvement in narcotic case. He was sentenced to prison for 3.2 years and was released in January 2013. “I knew GW while I was still in prison,” he said.

The other smuggling case involving the name of Kerobokan Prison occurred last Thursday (Jun 26) where the ranks of the Customs Office, Renon, secured approximately 100 grams of crystal meth supplied from India. Interestingly, it was rumored to be sent to a prisoner at Kerobokan Prison.

The prisoner itself was involved in drug case in 2012. So far, the Bali Police Drugs Directorate was still

The Head of Kerobokan Prison, Farid Junaidi, when asked for his confirmation said that his party continued to tighten the guard, anticipate the smuggling of illegal drugs into the prison whose 60 percent of prisoners were drug abusers. Responding to the smuggling last month, his party had been monitoring the prisoners through a regular examination. However, his party was still awaiting the results of police investigation. “We’ve regularly monitored. But the investigation is carried out by police. If the identity can have been revealed, we will immediately secure,” he said.

Prison answered if the suspect connecting the case to prison house was a common mode for interrupting the development made by police. “Whatever the confession of the perpetrator (suspect of drug— Ed) is, I will wait for the result of police investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Directorate of Bali Police Narcotics Unit, Bambang Yugisworo, when asked for his confirmation on the rampant drug smuggling attempt to Kerobokan Prison said that his party continued to conduct investigation related to drug trafficking in Bali, including the smuggling into the Kerobokan Prison. “We’re still making the investigation, so when the perpetrator has been arrested we’ll release the information,” he said. ‘Sumber Bunga’ boat drowned in Pekutatan

NEGARA - Bad weather condition in the waters of Jembrana makes the fishing activity to catch fish disturbed. Even, the Sumber Bunga fishing boat driven by Sahrani, 45, drowned in the waters of Pulukan, Pekutatan, Wednesday (Jul 2). The boat with 17 crews was drowned while fishing.

Even though the boat was drowned, the entire crews could survive after rescued by another boat passing around the location.

Based on information, the incident occurred around 03:00 a.m. The Sumber Bunga boat caught fish with another fellow boat specially transporting fishing nets. Since the departure from Pengambengan Pier

on Tuesday night (Jul 1) the boat did not have any problems.

However, while catching fish in the waters of Pulukan (Pekutatan), the weather suddenly turned hostile.

Strong winds accompanied by high waves suddenly hit the silent boat.

As the weather was getting worse, the captain decided to return home though getting no fish. A surviving

crew, Buhayi, 27, said the boat was drowned as struck by high waves.

The boat containing no fish easily turned over after rolled by waves. Meanwhile, the crews jumped out to rescue themselves.

They were floating in the sea and then rescued by another fellow boat in charge of catching fish. Meanwhile, the reversed boat could no

longer be rescued along with the machine worth hundreds of millions of rupiahs.

Sahrani, the boat captain, said the entire crew survived, while the boat was drowned at a depth of approximately 100 meters. As a result of the accident at sea, the boat owner suffered a loss worth over IDR 100 million. (kmb26)

P49 Deesign achieved this ‘back to nature’ concept through clever use of materials such as bamboo, warm earthy colors, and design elements like the curving corridor inspired by the shape of a leaf, textured walls reflecting the pattern of tree bark, and floors reflecting the rippled form of water droplets.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dior Homme celebrates updated classics Agence France-Presse

PARIS - Dior Homme designer Kris Van Assche celebrated the updated classic at Paris fashion while Korea’s Songzio jazzed up cool, summer looks with metallic print and big pockets.

On day four of men’s fashion, Van Assche said he delved into Christian Dior’s world for a collection in which the “bourgeois meets the artist”.

“I wanted a sense of renewal and an idea of Christian Dior’s artistic milieu to come through as well as his love of formality and tradition,” he said.

The result was formal, navy suits with an emphasis on the tuxedo and traditional pinstripe. Nautical touches, a reference to the Normandy-born Dior’s love of the sea, came in the form of toggle fasteners and striped knit vests over shirts to create what Van Assche called “a new form of three piece suit”.

The Belgian designer said he was also influenced by a letter dating from the 1950s he found in the Dior archives. In the letter, Dior, who founded the Christian Dior fashion house in 1946, wrote about the importance of maintaining traditions.

“Traditions have to be maintained so they can be passed on to future generations,” he wrote.

“In troubled times like ours we must maintain these traditions which are our luxury and the flower of our civilisation,” he added.

Van Assche turned the handwrit-

ten letter into a print which he used throughout the collection.

Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld described the clothes as “very modern classic, updated classic”.

“Classic -- if it is only classic -becomes boring. You need to freshen it with modernity,” he told reporters after the show.

US actor Ansel Elgort and Asian actor and boy band star Vic Chou were also among those on the front row at the show.

Elsewhere on Saturday, South Korean designer Songzio took the “configuration and shape of wood” as the inspiration for his latest collection.

The designer sent out oversized coats, boxy shirts, and wide, pleated shorts. Standout looks included a knit tunic ensemble and sleeveless, transparent shirt with gold-coloured metallic print. Big pockets popped up on the front of shirts and the back of shorts.

As well as his signature palette of dark navy and tones of black, there was also white and cream, vivid orange and midnight blue.

Songzio picked up the gold in black leather sandals while other footwear had big straps high over the ankle.

LONDON - Julian Assange has been asked to star in a fashion show by British designer Ben Westwood at Ecuador’s London embassy, where the WikiLeaks founder is currently holed up in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Former erotic photographer Westwood, son of legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, wants “good looking” Assange, 42, to appear with six other models as part of a fringe event during London Fashion Week in September.

“Julian is a popular hero,” the designer said in a statement given to AFP. “He has done a great deal to change public opinion.

“Through WikiLeaks people have been able to compare the facts with the official version of the story.

“He is a good-looking man and I hope he is going to model,” he added.

DENPASAR - The efforts to smooth the Benoa Bay reclamation still continue. On Tuesday (Jul 1), a coordinative meeting was held by Bali government with the representatives of the agencies from Badung County and Denpasar Municipality. As a result, the Badung and Denpasar government worried about the impacts of the reclamation.

In response the issue, the environmentalist Ketut Sugiana revealed on Wednesday (Jul 2) that the fundamental matters to be clarified first was the juridical boundaries of local government in the sea. “It should take firm action, so that if the government worries it should not issue the permit.

Without the reclamation, what are the losses to be suffered by the people of Bali?” he asked.

Sugiana added the implementation of Article 18 (7) of Law No.32/2004 seemed to remain unclear. Legally, the management of the sea as far as 12 miles belonged to provincial authority, while one third of it belonged to the authority of the county/ municipality. “Who has the jurisdiction at the position of the planned

reclamation? If it indeed belongs to regional authority, so the provision of the regulation lies in the region based on the prevailing legislation including the regional bylaw on the Regional Spatial Plan,” said Sugiana.

According to him, if the management authority lay in the jurisdiction of county/municipal government, the management permit would also belong to the county/municipal government. In principle, said Sugiana, as long as the authority lay in county/ municipal government, the environmental impact analysis submitted by the initiator should be assessed by the same authority. If the jurisdiction belonged to the province, the province also had the right to assess. “This must be made clear and explicit. All

the impacts on the island and the people of Bali must be considered,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rector of the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Ketut Suastika, confirmed the findings of scientists of the Udayana University emphatically declared it unfit. The research was conducted by a joint team, including the expert in the environmental, cultural and economic studies.

Related to the issuance of Presidential Decree No.51/2014, Suastika admitted to have not assessed and institutionally his party should consult the matter to an expert of law. “We institutionally have not discussed about the matter. In the future, we’re going to discuss about it,” he said. (rah)

DENPASAR - Bali as a tourist destination is certainly visited by many foreign travelers. When spending holidays, some few travelers were unfortunate, sick to death. The mortuary of Sanglah Hospital always receives the body of foreign traveler each month. Based on the existing data up to June 2014, the body of 78 foreign travelers from various countries came into the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital. Of that amount, 14 of them died unearthly such as due to poisoning (2), drowning (6), traffic accident (3), hanging itself (3) and murder (2).

Chief of Functional Medical Staff of Sanglah Hospital Medical Forensic, IB Putu Alit, said that murder case occurred in February to an American citizen named Paul Robb and in May to an English woman named Anne Maria. The 78 bodies were foreign travelers from 24 countries including Australia (15), the Netherlands (9), Ireland (1), Germany (3), Iran (1), the U.S. (12), Canada (4), Timor Leste (3), China (3), Poland (2), Hungary (1), Japan (6), Russia (2), France (4), Italy (1), England (1), Singapore (3), the Philippines (1), Korea (2), Malaysia (1), Switzerland (1), India (1) and Belgium (1). “There was also a case related to a Korean who was mugged while riding a motorcycle. At the incident, the victim fell down and died,” said Alit.

Regarding the financing, either for the body care, deposit cost or delivery of the body was on the account of family or police if the deceased got involved in a criminal case. According to Alit, the rate was different between the service provided for foreign travelers and domestic residents, except for the foreign travelers had owned a temporary residence permit (KITAS). “In some cases, there are charges paid by the embassy, but they are mostly paid by families,” said Alit.

The difference of rate for the handling of body of foreign travelers from domestic residents could be manifold. For instance, the rate charged for basic service to a body was IDR 50,000 for domestic residents and IDR 600,000 for foreign travelers having no KITAs document. According to Alit, higher rate was charged to foreign travelers because they did not get any subsidy from the state unless having a KITAS. (kmb24)

Ketut Sri Wahyuni, 30, a local resident told that she used mountain spring for daily consumption and cooking needs. The natural water she got could not flow to her home every day but every other day. “It’s a mountain spring, sir. It flows every other day, not every day,” said Wahyuni who worked as trader of peanut brittle snacks, Wednesday morning (Jul 2).

she paid the children around her house to help collect water from the water source into the cistern. The wage given to the children until the cistern contained full of water was ranging from IDR 5,000 to IDR 10,000. It was good enough to fill in their school holiday.

Meanwhile, Putu Krishna Natha, 9, a fourth grade student of the SDN 3 Suwug elementary school admitted that he collected water every day and could earn IDR 5,000. “I do it every day, sir, during my school holiday. For this, I will be paid at IDR 5,000,” he said. Similar opinion was expressed by Ketut Rediastini, 9. Abe said he was satisfied that a North Korean investigation committee has the mandate to carry out a serious investigation into the abductions, though previous deals with the North have fallen through. Japan will continue to abide by U.N. sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs.

“We have determined that an unprecedented framework has been established, where an organization that can make decisions at a national level ... will be at the forefront of the investigations,” Abe said. “However, this is only a start. We are determined to do everything we can, with a renewed effort, toward a comprehensive resolution.”

Abe’s decision is to be formally approved by his Cabinet on Friday, after the committee holds its first meeting. The announcement follows talks between North Korean and Japanese negotiators in Beijing earlier this week. North Korea’s state media put out their first report on the talks shortly after Abe’s announcement, saying the North’s negotiators briefed their Japanese

counterparts on the composition of the committee and how it will work.

“Both sides agreed to take necessary measures in the days ahead, while getting in touch with each other through a diplomatic channel,” said the report by the Korean Central News Agency.

In Seoul, Foreign Ministry spokesman Noh Kwang-il said South Korea looks forward to an early resolution of the abduction issue. But he said any steps taken

by Japan shouldn’t undermine international cooperation on the North Korean nuclear and missile standoffs.

“The government of the Republic of Korea once again stresses that the Japan-North Korea consultations, including on easing Japan’s unilateral sanctions on North Korea, should, by all means, be held in a transparent manner and that all the relevant measures

by Japan should be taken in a way that does not undermine the coordination among the ROK, the U.S. and Japan on North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues,” Noh told a regular briefing.

WASHINGTON — Intelligence officials are concerned about a new al-Qaida effort to create a bomb that would go undetected through airport security, a counterterrorism official said, prompting the U.S. to call for tighter security measures at some foreign airports.

The counterterrorism official, who would not be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, declined Wednesday to describe the kind of information that triggered the warning. But officials in the past have raised concerns about non-metallic explosives being surgically implanted inside a traveler’s body, designed to be undetectable in pat-downs or metal detectors.

The U.S. has been planning for additional measures for the past month, a counterterrorism official said, adding there was no immediate threat that led to the announcement by the Homeland Security Department that it was requesting tighter security abroad.

American intelligence has picked up indications that bomb makers from al-Qaida’s Yemen affiliate have traveled to Syria to link up with the al-Qaida affiliate there. The groups are working to perfect an explosive device that could foil airport security, according to the counterterrorism official.

Americans and others from the West have traveled to Syria over the past year to join al-Nusra Front’s fight against the Syrian government.

The fear is that fighters with a U.S. or Western passport — and therefore subject to less stringent security screening — could carry such a bomb onto an American plane.

Al-Qaida’s affiliate in Yemen, called al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, long has been fixated on bringing down airplanes with hidden explosives. It was behind failed and thwarted plots involving suicide bombers with explosives designed to hide inside underwear and explosives hidden inside printer cartridges shipped on cargo planes.

WASHINGTON - U.S. private-sector hiring hit a 1-1/2-year high in June, reinforcing views that momentum was building to carry the economy through the rest of the year after a dismal start. Wednesday’s report from payrolls processor ADP added to other bullish data ranging from manufacturing to auto sales that has suggested the economy has bounced back smartly after a first-quarter slump.

“This is further proof that recent weaker growth numbers are not a true reflection of the U.S. economy,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services in Pittsburgh.

Private employers added 281,000 workers to payrolls last month, up from 179,000 in May, ADP said. June’s increase, which topped economists’ expectations for a gain of only 200,000 jobs, was the largest since November 2012.

Coming a day before the government’s comprehensive employment report for June, the ADP data increased the likelihood of another month of strong nonfarm payrolls growth, economists said.

Most, however, maintained their forecasts for the government data, noting that the ADP report, which is jointly developed with Moody’s Analytics, was not a reliable indicator of overall jobs growth.

Payrolls probably increased by 212,000 in June after rising by

217,000 the prior month, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

The Labor Department is schedule to release its jobs tally at 8:30 a.m.

EDT (1230 GMT) on Thursday.

In a separate report, the National Federation of Independent Businesses said small business hiring increased in June for a ninth straight month, the longest string of gains since 2006.

“The ADP data, along with many other labor market indicators, suggest that firms have not pulled back on payrolls despite the weak growth during the first half of the year,” said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

Gross domestic product contracted at a 2.9 percent annual pace in the first quarter. Growth in the second quarter is forecast at around a 3.5 percent rate.

That better outlook was underscored by data on Tuesday showing sales of automobiles hit their highest level in almost eight years in June and factories expanded at

a steady clip.

Even housing, which has struggled following a run-up in mortgage rates last year, is showing signs of life. But higher borrowing costs remain a constraint, with applications for loans to buy homes falling for a third straight week last week.

With the economy’s fortunes improving, some economists said the U.S. Federal Reserve’s ultra easy monetary policy was no longer warranted. The central bank is reducing the amount of money it is injecting into the economy, but has yet to signal an intention to raise interest rates anytime soon.

“This is a further warning sign that the Fed is falling behind in its guidance on the future path for interest rates,” said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York.

The Fed has held benchmark overnight rates near zero since late-2008.

Last month, job gains in the private sector were broad-based.

Construction payrolls increased by 36,000, the biggest gain since February 2006. Manufacturing added 12,000 jobs.

Professional business services employers hired 77,000 workers last month, the most since November 2012.

HONG KONG - When huge crowds took to Hong Kong’s streets this week to voice anger at Beijing’s ever-tightening grip, an unlikely group was marching in step: wealthy financiers fighting mainland influence over the city’s markets and political life. Joining rain-soaked protesters from all walks of life -- who by organisers’ estimates numbered a record half-a-million -- was hedge fund manager Edward Chin.

Until this year, the unassuming 46-year-old had never joined a political organisation. But like many others in Hong Kong, he has grown increasingly worried about the influence of China’s Communist rulers -- particularly Beijing’s insistence that when Hong Kong’s next leader is elected in 2017, the candidates must be drawn from a list of approved “patriots”.

Chin joined the nascent pro-democracy movement now known as Occupy Central after meeting one of its leaders, legal scholar Benny Tai, in March. “I did my due diligence on Benny,” he joked.

Occupy Central, which has grown from a handful of activists into a powerful thorn in the side of Hong Kong’s government, has threatened to paralyse the city’s Central financial district with mass protests if its demands for electoral reforms are not met -- so it may seem surprising that bankers are signing up.

But for Chin and other financiers who have formed their own faction within the group, the pro-democracy movement presents an opportunity to address what they see as China’s outsized influence on Hong Kong’s crucial financial sector.

A battle was raging between “old Hong Kong tycoons and mainland newcomers”, he said, over the upstarts’ seemingly limitless but dubiously sourced supply of capital, and their predilection for appointing family members or those with “guanxi” -- contacts -- within the Communist Party and Chinese state-owned businesses.

Chin’s group of 70 members are drawn from a wide range of banks and investment houses. While they represent just a fraction of Hong Kong’s huge banking workforce, they have become a force to be reckoned with in the protest movement, using it to lobby against the growing clout of Chinese cash and nepotism in the sector.

“They are exceptional,” chief organiser Benny Tai told AFP. “The most active group of their kind (within Occupy Central).”

Their cash has certainly come in useful -- the bankers have spent tens of thousands of dollars on campaign advertising and events in just a few short months.

An entirely separate budget and agenda allows them to concentrate on issues such as financial corruption and immigration policy that are not a priority for the “core” protesters.

“Whenever we need money, we just raise it in a few days between ourselves,” Chin said. “We just sign the cheque.”

Nepotism fears

Hong Kong is an Asian financial hub, and the city prides itself on low levels of corruption and the ability to attract international firms with favourable tax rates and pro-business policies.But Lai Chong Au, a sales manager at a major mutual fund house and member of Occupy Central’s finance professionals group, believes that is changing fast. Used to an economy “run on guanxi”, mainland financiers -- flush with cash from China’s extended boom -- expect the same when they do business with Hong Kong.

“These one-man band mainlanders -- they can raise one or two billion US (dollars) easy,” she told AFP. “They get it from their father or friends of politicians or government.”

While her firm is increasingly open to the opportunities the mainland offers, she voiced caution over losing links with established Western firms. “(We need to) ensure all the international companies will feel comfortable staying in Hong Kong. If we are losing this, we lose our advantage,” she added.

US investment banks including JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs have long been accused of hiring “princelings” - the offspring of the Chinese elite -- in their Hong Kong offices to boost their chances of business success on the mainland.

But Chin said this kind of alleged nepotism was not welcome. “We aren’t running a ‘sons and daughters programme’ -- choosing them over someone with a Harvard MBA,” he said.

Police arrest Australian for threatening local

KUTA - The North Kuta Police Department, Bali, arrested an Australian citizen who had allegedly threatened a villa’s staff member on Tuesday night (July 1).

“We held a rummage at ZIva and Boutique Villa in Kerobokan, Kuta, for FI, an Australian tourist, with passport number N4667572,” said Chief of North Kuta Police Adjunct Commissioner Ronny Riantoko in Kuta on Wednesday.

The issue started when IF, who had booked the villa from June 26 to July 3, 2014, enquired the receptionist on Monday night (June 30) about his check-out time.

A staff member explained to IF about the villa’s regulation that the check-out time was 12 a.m. of Indonesian Central Time, but IF asked for leaving at 9 p.m.

As the staff member was explaining further that additional charges will be applicable if a guest wants a late check-out, Igor went to his room and brought back a gun, and then threatened the staff.

Besides pointing the gun at the staff, IF also shouted that he was a Russian soldier and his commander was staying at a villa nearby in Pangkung Sari Street, in North Kuta area.

The staff member, who was threatened, had reported to his boss and then called the North Kuta Police.

BULELENG - During the event of Lake Buyan Festival which was just closed, one of the attractions performed was what is locally called “Sapi Gerumbungan” and in English roughly translated as “Bull Race”.

Sapi Gerumbungan is acknowledged as a unique attraction which is only found in the North Bali, in the Regency of Buleleng. It is a blended of sport, race and art. A pair of bull is harnessed together with a yoke to pull a sort of rake which in Balinese is called “lampit”, usually used to flatten the muddy soil in the wet rice field before it planted with new seeds of rice.

A huge wooden bell then is hung on the neck of the respective bull. The wooden bell makes distinctive sound while the pair of bull is running due to the thumping bell.

The man as a jokey sits on the end of the rake directing the running bulls, whipping them to run faster. The jockey once a while pulls the string of the bridle to make the bull raise its head to run elegantly.

In the days gone by, Sapi Gerumbungan was held before the planting season. It was ritual for a good harvest, sport, entertainment and fun. The event of Sapi Gerumbungan was held on a wet muddy rice field and in such condition the bulls were not able to run fast but striving more slowly but elegantly due to the muddy soil. A farmer usually invited the other farmers to join the race of Sapi Gerumbungan and the winner was not necessarily the fastest but many factors must be taken into the consideration such as the physically size of the bulls, the style of the running bulls, the sound of the “gerumbungan” and discipline of the jockey. The winner was not awarded a trophy or other reward but only a short of applause and later having fun together enjoying the meal served by the host.

Nowadays, the farmers gradually changing the means of plowing the rice field using tractor instead of rake pulled by bulls. The gradually eroding availability of rice field gnawed away by development of houses, the unique event of gerumbungan is also rarely held and it is worried that in not so long future it may extinct to exist.

The Local Government of Buleleng is trying its utmost to preserve this unique event by holding it on special days such as during the celebration of the Independent Day of the Republic of Indonesia and as mentioned above during the Lake Buyan Festival. The event of sapi gerumbungan is also widely promoted as tourist attraction that is only found in the North Bali, officially named the “Kabupaten Buleleng”. (nyoman suwela)

DENPASAR - A New Zealand woman was jailed for 10 months on the Indonesian resort island of Bali Wednesday after she was caught with a half-smoked hash joint.

Leeza Ormsby was arrested in February after police raided a villa in the tourist area of Kuta, and found the joint in her bag as well as a large stash of hash and ecstasy in a cupboard.

The 37-year-old, who was based in Sydney before her arrest, admitted to smoking the joint but insisted the other drugs were not hers.

After investigating, police sought charges against her only over the joint, which contained 0.3 grams of hash, and said that the hash and ecstasy in the cupboard would form part of a

separate probe.

Presiding judge Parulian Saragih told a court in the Balinese capital Denpasar Wednesday that Ormsby had been found guilty of illegal drug use, and handed her a 10-month sentence.

It was less than the 15 months sought by prosecutors, but the judge said she had “confessed to the crime and will not repeat it”.

After the sentencing, Ormsby thanked the panel of judges.

Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest anti-narcotics laws, including the death sentence for drug-smuggling.

Bali attracts millions of tourists every year with its pristine, palm-fringed beaches but foreigners are regularly caught with drugs on the hard-partying island.

YANGON, Myanmar — Buddhist mobs on motorbikes drove through Myanmar’s historic city of Mandalay in a second night of attacks on minority Muslims that left two people dead, 14 injured and raised fears of wider violence, officials said Thursday.

Wayne Derman, a professor of sport and exercise medicine at the University of Cape Town, said in court that the contrast likely contributed to stress and anxiety for Pistorius, who fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a closed toilet door in his home. He testified for the defense, which wants to show that the athlete had a deep sense of vulnerability and it was a factor in what he has described as a mistaken shooting.

“You’ve got a paradox of an individual who is supremely able, and you’ve got an individual who is significantly disabled,” said Derman, who has worked with South African Olympic and Paralympic teams and has treated Pistorius over half a dozen years. He noted that Pistorius’ anxieties included concern about flying.

“He has a specific fear of being trapped somewhere without being able to move very rapidly,” Derman said. Referring to Pistorius’ decision to confront a perceived threat on the night he killed Steenkamp, Derman said “fleeing was not an option” because the runner has no lower legs.

Pistorius, 27, says he killed Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013 by mistake, thinking there was a dangerous intruder in his home. He shot her while on his stumps. The prosecution says he intentionally killed the 29-yearold model after the couple had a Valentine’s Day argument.

Pistorius, who is free on bail, faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder, but he could also be sentenced to a shorter prison term if convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing. Additionally, he faces separate gun-related charges.

Filipino Muslims urged to delay hajj due to MERS Associated Press Writer

The dead included a Muslim man, who residents said was on his way to a mosque before dawn Thursday when he was attacked by the mob and left dead in the street. The second victim was a Buddhist man, whose cause of death was under investigation, said a police officer on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation, has been grappling with violence since 2012 that has left up to 280 people dead and another 140,000 homeless, most of them Muslims attacked by Buddhist extremists. Most of the violence has taken place in western Rakhine state.

The latest outbreak that started Tuesday night was a first in Mandalay, in central Myanmar, the second-largest city and an important economic hub and center of Buddhist culture and learning where Muslims and Buddhists have traditionally lived

peacefully together.

Mandalay region chief minister Ye Myint told media that four people were arrested. He did not reveal the identities or religion of the victims or those detained for fear it might inflame the situation. The government has faced international criticism for failing to act strongly to stop the violence, which in Rakhine state reportedly occurred in several cases as security forces looked on. So far, the government has not commented on the Mandalay attacks.

In a radio address Thursday, President Thein Sein raised the country’s need for stability as it transitions to democracy from a half-century of military rule — but did not mention Mandalay specifically. “For reforms to be successful, I would like to urge all to avoid instigation and behavior that incites hatred in our fellow citizens,” Thein Sein said.

The violence followed rumors that the Muslim owner of a teashop

had raped a Buddhist woman, said Khin Maung Oo, secretary of the city’s Myanmar Muslim Youth Religious Convention Center. Police did not immediately confirm or deny the alleged rape, but said they were tipped off that the teashop might be attacked and told the owner to close early.

Authorities deployed hundreds of police after a crowd of more than 300 Buddhists marched to the teashop, singing the national anthem.

Police fired rubber bullets to try to disperse the crowd.

Rioters threw stones at a mosque, causing minor damage to its exterior and front doors, and others ransacked a few Muslim-owned shops.

Several cars were set on fire or had windows shattered by stones and bricks. At least four people suffered minor injuries on Tuesday, mostly from stones thrown by the mob or from rubber bullets fired by police, authorities said.

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine health authorities urged Muslim Filipinos Thursday to postpone their annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia due to worries about an often deadly respiratory virus.

The World Health Organization has recorded 824 confirmed cases of MERS, or the Middle East respiratory syndrome, as of July 2, including at least 286 related deaths. Most cases have occurred in Saudi Arabia, and the virus is believed primarily acquired through contact with camels.

So far, Mecca has seen fewer cases than other parts of Saudi Arabia. Since the coronavirus was first discovered in 2012, there have been two annual hajj pilgrimages to the city, and neither saw instances of pilgrims being infected.

“We are strongly recommending and advising our Muslim brothers to defer ... their hajj pilgrimage this year for, maybe, next year,” Health Secretary Enrique Ona told reporters.

About 6,500 Filipinos are expected to join the October pilgrimage, part of some 2 million Muslims from all over the world.

Dimapuno Datu-Ramos from the government’s Commission on Muslim Filipinos said those who insist on going needed to secure a medical certificate to show they are fit for the journey.

Ona said that health workers will monitor Filipinos in each of the pilgrimage flights headed to and from Mecca.

INDONESIA Indonesians in Singapore hold presidential election earlier Antara

JAKARTA - Indonesians in Singapore will go to the polls on July 6 or earlier as compared to Indonesia on July 9, 2014, noted a press statement received on Thursday from Indonesia’s Election Committee in Singapore (PPLN).

The decision to hold an early election is due to the fact that July 6 falls on a Sunday when most of the Indonesians working in Singapore get their day off.

The PPLN has prepared 36 polling booths at the Indonesian Embassy’s building.

Chairman of PPLN Mirza Nurhidayat stated that 108,341 Indonesians in Singapore are eligible to cast their vote.

About 17,094 people have confirmed their participation in the election.

During the legislative election held on April 9, about 13,071 Indonesians in Singapore had cast their vote. The officials at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore have added more regis-

tration tables in anticipation of more voters turning up for the presidential election.

In addition, the election committee will also use barcode tickets in order to avoid fraud or long queues. The election committee has also provided shuttle buses in front of MRT stations in Singapore, such as Redhill and Tanjong Katong.

“With more registration tables and the barcode system, voters only need 10-15 minutes time to register themselves and cast their votes,” claimed Mirza.

Smear campaigns have escalated ahead of next Wednesday’s election, with the candidates’ supporters playing dirty to control the messages swirling in the media, a trend commentators say has contributed to a steep fall in support for Widodo.

In another attack, a senior official from the party of Prabowo Subianto, the only other contender, suggested on Twitter Widodo was a communist, playing on fears that linger from the era of dictator Suharto, who demonised the far-left.

While Widodo -- known by his nickname Jokowi -- has borne the brunt of the attacks, Prabowo has also been targeted.

Government sells one billion Euro bond Antara

JAKARTA - The government has for the first time sold foreign exchange bonds valued at one billion euro. The government concluded the euro bond transaction on July 2 as part of the program of selling US$25 billion worth of Global Medium Term Notes (GMTN).

The selling of euro bonds is part of the strategy to diversify sources of finance and expansion of base of global investors, the debt management directorate general said here on Thursday.

The fund from the bonds sales would be used to help finance the 2014 state budget.

The bonds would be for seven years or it would be due for repayment on July 8 in 2021.

The bonds carry a coupon rate of 2.88 percent with a yield of 2.98 percent.

The bonds were oversubscribed 6.7 times with demand reaching 6.7 billion euro.

Around 24 percent of the bonds are for British investors, another 24 percent for Asian investors, 19 percent for German and Austrian investors, 18 percent for US investors, 4 percent for Swiss investors and 11 percent for other European investors.

The Indonesia government debts are given a rating of BBB(stable) by Fitch, BB+ (stable)

by S&P, and Baa3 (stable) by Moody’s international rating agency.

LEAFIELD, England — Formula One team Caterham has been sold to a group of Swiss and Middle Eastern investors led by former HRT team boss Colin Kolles. The team announced the sale on Wednesday with immediate effect, meaning Caterham will be under new ownership and management for this weekend’s British Grand Prix.

“We are very committed to the future of the team and we will ensure that the team has the necessary resources to develop and

grow and achieve everything it is capable of.”

Air Asia boss Tony Fernandes founded the team which entered F1 in 2010 under the Lotus name, but warned at the start of this season that he would look to sell if there was no upturn in performance. The team is last in the current standings and has not scored a championship point in five years of racing. The team statement made no mention of the ownership of the Caterham GP2 team or the Caterham sports car business.

Kolles’ part in the Caterham takeover appears to have ended his other avenue of return to F1, as he had been involved in the Romanian-based Forza Rossa team which was aiming to enter F1 next season.

Kolles was formerly involved with the defunct Midland and Spyker teams which were taken over by Force India, remaining throughout the changes of ownership. He also was involved with the short-lived HRT team which also entered the series in 2010.

FORTALEZA, Brazil - Brazil are under intense pressure to breathe life into their World Cup campaign and produce a performance worthy of champions when they face Colombia and their freescoring midfielder James Rodriguez in Friday’s quarter-final. After their laboured win over Chile in a penalty shootout in their last match, the Brazilians have been berated by their fans and former players. Among them is none other than Zico, their great playmaker from the 1980s.

“The fact is that we are lacking a proper game plan,” he wrote in a column in British newspaper The Guardian. “There is no more build-up from the back,” he complained, saying that against Chile the Brazilians “once again resorted to long balls to Neymar”. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has taken such criticism in his stride. “It’s normal that they (the fans and the media) are demanding,” he said.

“We’re facing up to our difficulties and we’ll see if we can improve our balance in the next game from start to finish, and not have the ups and downs that we had in the previous games.” Striker Neymar, scorer of four of Brazil’s eight World Cup goals, is nursing a thigh injury picked up against the Chileans but looks certain to start.

Scolari’s biggest selection headache is in midfield, where Luiz Gustavo is suspended after being booked against Chile. Ramires is his most likely replacement. In stark contrast to the angst-ridden Brazilians, the Colombians seem to be enjoying every minute of their best ever World Cup campaign. They have won all four matches, scoring 11 goals in the process and conceding just two.

In Rodriguez, they have produced one of the revelations of the competition. He has scored five, including a contender for goal of the tournament in a 2-0 defeat of Uruguay in the last round. “There’s no point in just stopping James. BELO HORIZONTE - France have surprised many by emerging as World Cup contenders but face their toughest test yet against nemesis Germany in a quarter-final clash of European heavyweights at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium on Friday.

For France coach Didier Deschamps the past, heart-rending World Cup semi-final defeats to the Germans in 1982 and 1986 do not matter at all.

But with French media splashing the word “Angstgegner”, the German word for bogey team, across their front pages and broadcasts, Deschamps must conquer the fears of an entire nation if he is to restore his country’s World Cup eminence. France, who have scored 10 goals in four matches in Brazil, have already gone a long way to restoring some pride after their hapless first round exit in 2010.

Reaching the last eight with solid teamwork has already done much to rebuild their image but facing the Germans in a knockout game is motivation in itself. They have only excruciating memories of their last two World Cup battles against them, losing a nerve-racking semi-final in 1982 in Spain. After scoring twice to lead 3-1 in extra time they conceded

two goals and crashed out on penalties in what has become known as ‘Seville ‘82’.

RIO DE JANEIRO — FIFA expressed “substantial doubts” Wednesday about a German magazine’s claims that a World Cup game could have been fixed and asked the publication to provide evidence to back up its report that a renowned match-fixer accurately predicted details of the match hours before it kicked off.

FIFA said it wants Der Spiegel to provide details of all its conversations with convicted match-fixer Wilson Raj Perumal to prove its claim that Cameroon’s 4-0 loss to Croatia on June 18 may have been fixed.

“The article has put the integrity of FIFA World Cup matches in question, which is a serious allegation,” FIFA director of security Ralf Mutschke said in a statement read out at a briefing at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro by spokeswoman Delia Fischer.

FIFA said it had no indication from betting markets that any of the 56 games so far at the World Cup were suspicious and has “substantial doubts about the alleged manipulation published by Der Spiegel.”

The weekly magazine claimed that Perumal told it in a Facebook chat hours before the Cameroon-Croatia group game that he knew what was going to happen. Der Spiegel said that Perumal — a Singaporean who is arguably the best-known fixer in football — correctly predicted that Croatia would win 4-0 and Cameroon would have a player sent off in the first half. Cameroon midfielder Alex Song was red-carded just before halftime. Perumal has denied he made any such predictions.

Suspicious betting activity around a game is an indication that it may have been fixed for illegal gambling syndicates. That could include an unusually large amount of money being bet on the game or wagers being placed at unusual times during the game or on specific happenings — like a first-half red card, for example.

After their laboured win over Chile in a penalty shootout in their last match, the Brazilians have been berated by their fans and former players. Among them is none other than Zico, their great playmaker from the 1980s.

“The fact is that we are lacking a proper game plan,” he wrote in a column in British newspaper The Guardian. “There is no more build-up from the back,” he complained, saying that against Chile the Brazilians “once again resorted to long balls to Neymar”. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has taken such criticism in his stride. “It’s normal that they (the fans and the media) are demanding,” he said.

“We’re facing up to our difficulties and we’ll see if we can improve our balance in the next game from start to finish, and not have the ups and downs that we had in the previous games.” Striker Neymar, scorer of four of Brazil’s eight World Cup goals, is nursing a thigh injury picked up against the Chileans but looks certain to start.

Scolari’s biggest selection headache is in midfield, where Luiz Gustavo is suspended after being booked against Chile. Ramires is his most likely replacement. In stark contrast to the angst-ridden Brazilians, the Colombians seem to be enjoying every minute of their best ever World Cup campaign. They have won all four matches, scoring 11 goals in the process and conceding just two.

In Rodriguez, they have produced one of the revelations of the competition. He has scored five, including a contender for goal of the tournament in a 2-0 defeat of Uruguay in the last round. “There’s no point in just stopping James. We need to stop the whole Colombian team.” Scolari said. “They’re a team that plays easily, nice football, they are calm and organised.”

BELO HORIZONTE - France have surprised many by emerging as World Cup contenders but face their toughest test yet against nemesis Germany in a quarter-final clash of European heavyweights at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium on Friday.

For France coach Didier Deschamps the past, heart-rending World Cup semi-final defeats to the Germans in 1982 and 1986 do not matter at all.

But with French media splashing the word “Angstgegner”, the German word for bogey team, across their front pages and broadcasts, Deschamps must conquer the fears of an entire nation if he is to restore his country’s World Cup eminence. France, who have scored 10 goals in four matches in Brazil, have already gone a long way to restoring some pride after their hapless first round exit in 2010.

Reaching the last eight with solid teamwork has already done much to rebuild their image but facing the Germans in a knockout game is motivation in itself. They have only excruciating memories of their last two World Cup battles against them, losing a nerve-racking semi-final in 1982 in Spain. After scoring twice to lead 3-1 in extra time they conceded

RIO DE JANEIRO — FIFA expressed “substantial doubts” Wednesday about a German magazine’s claims that a World Cup game could have been fixed and asked the publication to provide evidence to back up its report that a renowned match-fixer accurately predicted details of the match hours before it kicked off.

FIFA said it wants Der Spiegel to provide details of all its conversations with convicted match-fixer Wilson Raj Perumal to prove its claim that Cameroon’s 4-0 loss to Croatia on June 18 may have been fixed.

“The article has put the integrity of FIFA World Cup matches in question, which is a serious allegation,” FIFA director of security Ralf Mutschke said in a statement read out at a briefing at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro by spokeswoman Delia Fischer.

FIFA said it had no indication from betting markets that any of the 56 games so far at the World Cup were suspicious and has “substantial doubts about the alleged manipulation published by Der Spiegel.”

The weekly magazine claimed that Perumal told it in a Facebook chat hours before the Cameroon-Croatia group game that he knew what was going to happen. Der Spiegel said that Perumal — a Singaporean who is arguably the best-known fixer in football — correctly predicted that Croatia would win 4-0 and Cameroon would have a player sent off in the first half. Cameroon midfielder Alex Song was red-carded just before halftime. Perumal has denied he made any such predictions.

Suspicious betting activity around a game is an indication that it may have been fixed for illegal gambling syndicates. That could include an unusually large amount of money being bet on the game or wagers being placed at unusual times during the game or on specific happenings — like a first-half red card, for example.

LEAFIELD, England — Formula One team Caterham has been sold to a group of Swiss and Middle Eastern investors led by former HRT team boss Colin Kolles. The team announced the sale on Wednesday with immediate effect, meaning Caterham will be under new ownership and management for this weekend’s British Grand Prix.

The team will still be called Caterham for the immediate term, and remain at its base in Leafield. “We are aware of the huge challenge ahead of us given the fight at the bottom end of the championship and our target now is to aim for 10th place in the 2014 championship,” Albers said in a team statement.

“We are very committed to the future of the team and we will ensure that the team has the necessary resources to develop and

grow and achieve everything it is capable of.”

Air Asia boss Tony Fernandes founded the team which entered F1 in 2010 under the Lotus name, but warned at the start of this season that he would look to sell if there was no upturn in performance. The team is last in the current standings and has not scored a championship point in five years of racing. The team statement made no mention of the ownership of the Caterham GP2 team or the Caterham sports car business.

Kolles’ part in the Caterham takeover appears to have ended his other avenue of return to F1, as he had been involved in the Romanian-based Forza Rossa team which was aiming to enter F1 next season.

Kolles was formerly involved with the defunct Midland and Spyker teams which were taken over by Force India, remaining throughout the changes of ownership. He also was involved with the short-lived HRT team which also entered the series in 2010.

YANGON, Myanmar — Buddhist mobs on motorbikes drove through Myanmar’s historic city of Mandalay in a second night of attacks on minority Muslims that left two people dead, 14 injured and raised fears of wider violence, officials said Thursday.

PRETORIA, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius is a “paradox” whose past triumphs as a sprinter crossing the finish line with raised arms contrasted sharply with the daily, severe limitations that he endured because of his disability, a physician testified Thursday at the runner’s murder trial.

Wayne Derman, a professor of sport and exercise medicine at the University of Cape Town, said in court that the contrast likely contributed to stress and anxiety for Pistorius, who fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a closed toilet door in his home. He testified for the defense, which wants to show that the athlete had a deep sense of vulnerability and it was a factor in what he has described as a mistaken shooting.

“You’ve got a paradox of an individual who is supremely able, and you’ve got an individual who is significantly disabled,” said Derman, who has worked with South African Olympic and Paralympic teams and has treated Pistorius over half a dozen years. He noted that Pistorius’ anxieties included concern about flying.

“He has a specific fear of being trapped somewhere without being able to move very rapidly,” Derman said. Referring to Pistorius’ decision to confront a perceived threat on the night he killed Steenkamp, Derman said “fleeing was not an option” because the runner has no lower legs.

Pistorius, 27, says he killed Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013 by mistake, thinking there was a dangerous intruder in his home. He shot her while on his stumps. The prosecution says he intentionally killed the 29-yearold model after the couple had a Valentine’s Day argument.

Pistorius, who is free on bail, faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder, but he could also be sentenced to a shorter prison term if convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing. Additionally, he faces separate gun-related charges.

Filipino Muslims urged to delay hajj due to MERS Associated Press Writer

The dead included a Muslim man, who residents said was on his way to a mosque before dawn Thursday when he was attacked by the mob and left dead in the street. The second victim was a Buddhist man, whose cause of death was under investigation, said a police officer on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation, has been grappling with violence since 2012 that has left up to 280 people dead and another 140,000 homeless, most of them Muslims attacked by Buddhist extremists. Most of the violence has taken place in western Rakhine state.

The latest outbreak that started Tuesday night was a first in Mandalay, in central Myanmar, the second-largest city and an important economic hub and center of Buddhist culture and learning where Muslims and Buddhists have traditionally lived

peacefully together.

Mandalay region chief minister Ye Myint told media that four people were arrested. He did not reveal the identities or religion of the victims or those detained for fear it might inflame the situation. The government has faced international criticism for failing to act strongly to stop the violence, which in Rakhine state reportedly occurred in several cases as security forces looked on. So far, the government has not commented on the Mandalay attacks.

In a radio address Thursday, President Thein Sein raised the country’s need for stability as it transitions to democracy from a half-century of military rule — but did not mention Mandalay specifically. “For reforms to be successful, I would like to urge all to avoid instigation and behavior that incites hatred in our fellow citizens,” Thein Sein said.

The violence followed rumors that the Muslim owner of a teashop

had raped a Buddhist woman, said Khin Maung Oo, secretary of the city’s Myanmar Muslim Youth Religious Convention Center. Police did not immediately confirm or deny the alleged rape, but said they were tipped off that the teashop might be attacked and told the owner to close early.

Authorities deployed hundreds of police after a crowd of more than 300 Buddhists marched to the teashop, singing the national anthem.

Police fired rubber bullets to try to disperse the crowd.

Rioters threw stones at a mosque, causing minor damage to its exterior and front doors, and others ransacked a few Muslim-owned shops.

Several cars were set on fire or had windows shattered by stones and bricks. At least four people suffered minor injuries on Tuesday, mostly from stones thrown by the mob or from rubber bullets fired by police, authorities said.

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine health authorities urged Muslim Filipinos Thursday to postpone their annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia due to worries about an often deadly respiratory virus.

The World Health Organization has recorded 824 confirmed cases of MERS, or the Middle East respiratory syndrome, as of July 2, including at least 286 related deaths. Most cases have occurred in Saudi Arabia, and the virus is believed primarily acquired through contact with camels.

So far, Mecca has seen fewer cases than other parts of Saudi Arabia. Since the coronavirus was first discovered in 2012, there have been two annual hajj pilgrimages to the city, and neither saw instances of pilgrims being infected.

“We are strongly recommending and advising our Muslim brothers to defer ... their hajj pilgrimage this year for, maybe, next year,” Health Secretary Enrique Ona told reporters.

About 6,500 Filipinos are expected to join the October pilgrimage, part of some 2 million Muslims from all over the world.

Dimapuno Datu-Ramos from the government’s Commission on Muslim Filipinos said those who insist on going needed to secure a medical certificate to show they are fit for the journey.

INDONESIA Indonesians in Singapore hold presidential election earlier Antara

JAKARTA - Indonesians in Singapore will go to the polls on July 6 or earlier as compared to Indonesia on July 9, 2014, noted a press statement received on Thursday from Indonesia’s Election Committee in Singapore (PPLN).

The decision to hold an early election is due to the fact that July 6 falls on a Sunday when most of the Indonesians working in Singapore get their day off.

The PPLN has prepared 36 polling booths at the Indonesian Embassy’s building.

Chairman of PPLN Mirza Nurhidayat stated that 108,341 Indonesians in Singapore are eligible to cast their vote.

About 17,094 people have confirmed their participation in the election.

During the legislative election held on April 9, about 13,071 Indonesians in Singapore had cast their vote. The officials at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore have added more regis-

tration tables in anticipation of more voters turning up for the presidential election.

In addition, the election committee will also use barcode tickets in order to avoid fraud or long queues. The election committee has also provided shuttle buses in front of MRT stations in Singapore, such as Redhill and Tanjong Katong.

“With more registration tables and the barcode system, voters only need 10-15 minutes time to register themselves and cast their votes,” claimed Mirza.

Smear campaigns have escalated ahead of next Wednesday’s election, with the candidates’ supporters playing dirty to control the messages swirling in the media, a trend commentators say has contributed to a steep fall in support for Widodo.

In another attack, a senior official from the party of Prabowo Subianto, the only other contender, suggested on Twitter Widodo was a communist, playing on fears that linger from the era of dictator Suharto, who demonised the far-left.

While Widodo -- known by his nickname Jokowi -- has borne the brunt of the attacks, Prabowo has also been targeted.

Government sells one billion Euro bond Antara

JAKARTA - The government has for the first time sold foreign exchange bonds valued at one billion euro. The government concluded the euro bond transaction on July 2 as part of the program of selling US$25 billion worth of Global Medium Term Notes (GMTN).

The selling of euro bonds is part of the strategy to diversify sources of finance and expansion of base of global investors, the debt management directorate general said here on Thursday.

The fund from the bonds sales would be used to help finance the 2014 state budget.

The bonds would be for seven years or it would be due for repayment on July 8 in 2021.

The bonds carry a coupon rate of 2.88 percent with a yield of 2.98 percent.

The bonds were oversubscribed 6.7 times with demand reaching 6.7 billion euro.

Around 24 percent of the bonds are for British investors, another 24 percent for Asian investors, 19 percent for German and Austrian investors, 18 percent for US investors, 4 percent for Swiss investors and 11 percent for other European investors.

The Indonesia government debts are given a rating of BBB(stable) by Fitch, BB+ (stable)

by S&P, and Baa3 (stable) by Moody’s international rating agency.

WASHINGTON - U.S. private-sector hiring hit a 1-1/2-year high in June, reinforcing views that momentum was building to carry the economy through the rest of the year after a dismal start. Wednesday’s report from payrolls processor ADP added to other bullish data ranging from manufacturing to auto sales that has suggested the economy has bounced back smartly after a first-quarter slump.

“This is further proof that recent weaker growth numbers are not a true reflection of the U.S. economy,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services in Pittsburgh.

Private employers added 281,000 workers to payrolls last month, up from 179,000 in May, ADP said. June’s increase, which topped economists’ expectations for a gain of only 200,000 jobs, was the largest since November 2012.

Coming a day before the government’s comprehensive employment report for June, the ADP data increased the likelihood of another month of strong nonfarm payrolls growth, economists said.

Most, however, maintained their forecasts for the government data, noting that the ADP report, which is jointly developed with Moody’s Analytics, was not a reliable indicator of overall jobs growth.

Payrolls probably increased by 212,000 in June after rising by

217,000 the prior month, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

The Labor Department is schedule to release its jobs tally at 8:30 a.m.

EDT (1230 GMT) on Thursday.

In a separate report, the National Federation of Independent Businesses said small business hiring increased in June for a ninth straight month, the longest string of gains since 2006.

“The ADP data, along with many other labor market indicators, suggest that firms have not pulled back on payrolls despite the weak growth during the first half of the year,” said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

Gross domestic product contracted at a 2.9 percent annual pace in the first quarter. Growth in the second quarter is forecast at around a 3.5 percent rate.

That better outlook was underscored by data on Tuesday showing sales of automobiles hit their highest level in almost eight years in June and factories expanded at

a steady clip.

Even housing, which has struggled following a run-up in mortgage rates last year, is showing signs of life. But higher borrowing costs remain a constraint, with applications for loans to buy homes falling for a third straight week last week.

With the economy’s fortunes improving, some economists said the U.S. Federal Reserve’s ultra easy monetary policy was no longer warranted. The central bank is reducing the amount of money it is injecting into the economy, but has yet to signal an intention to raise interest rates anytime soon.

“This is a further warning sign that the Fed is falling behind in its guidance on the future path for interest rates,” said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York.

The Fed has held benchmark overnight rates near zero since late-2008.

Last month, job gains in the private sector were broad-based.

Construction payrolls increased by 36,000, the biggest gain since February 2006. Manufacturing added 12,000 jobs.

Professional business services employers hired 77,000 workers last month, the most since November 2012.

HONG KONG - When huge crowds took to Hong Kong’s streets this week to voice anger at Beijing’s ever-tightening grip, an unlikely group was marching in step: wealthy financiers fighting mainland influence over the city’s markets and political life. Joining rain-soaked protesters from all walks of life -- who by organisers’ estimates numbered a record half-a-million -- was hedge fund manager Edward Chin.

Until this year, the unassuming 46-year-old had never joined a political organisation. But like many others in Hong Kong, he has grown increasingly worried about the influence of China’s Communist rulers -- particularly Beijing’s insistence that when Hong Kong’s next leader is elected in 2017, the candidates must be drawn from a list of approved “patriots”.

Chin joined the nascent pro-democracy movement now known as Occupy Central after meeting one of its leaders, legal scholar Benny Tai, in March. “I did my due diligence on Benny,” he joked.

Occupy Central, which has grown from a handful of activists into a powerful thorn in the side of Hong Kong’s government, has threatened to paralyse the city’s Central financial district with mass protests if its demands for electoral reforms are not met -- so it may seem surprising that bankers are signing up.

But for Chin and other financiers who have formed their own faction within the group, the pro-democracy movement presents an opportunity to address what they see as China’s outsized influence on Hong Kong’s crucial financial sector.

A battle was raging between “old Hong Kong tycoons and mainland newcomers”, he said, over the upstarts’ seemingly limitless but dubiously sourced supply of capital, and their predilection for appointing family members or those with “guanxi” -- contacts -- within the Communist Party and Chinese state-owned businesses.

Chin’s group of 70 members are drawn from a wide range of banks and investment houses. While they represent just a fraction of Hong Kong’s huge banking workforce, they have become a force to be reckoned with in the protest movement, using it to lobby against the growing clout of Chinese cash and nepotism in the sector.

“They are exceptional,” chief organiser Benny Tai told AFP. “The most active group of their kind (within Occupy Central).”

Their cash has certainly come in useful -- the bankers have spent tens of thousands of dollars on campaign advertising and events in just a few short months.

An entirely separate budget and agenda allows them to concentrate on issues such as financial corruption and immigration policy that are not a priority for the “core” protesters.

“Whenever we need money, we just raise it in a few days between ourselves,” Chin said. “We just sign the cheque.”

Nepotism fears

Hong Kong is an Asian financial hub, and the city prides itself on low levels of corruption and the ability to attract international firms with favourable tax rates and pro-business policies.But Lai Chong Au, a sales manager at a major mutual fund house and member of Occupy Central’s finance professionals group, believes that is changing fast. Used to an economy “run on guanxi”, mainland financiers -- flush with cash from China’s extended boom -- expect the same when they do business with Hong Kong.

“These one-man band mainlanders -- they can raise one or two billion US (dollars) easy,” she told AFP. “They get it from their father or friends of politicians or government.”

While her firm is increasingly open to the opportunities the mainland offers, she voiced caution over losing links with established Western firms. “(We need to) ensure all the international companies will feel comfortable staying in Hong Kong. If we are losing this, we lose our advantage,” she added.

US investment banks including JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs have long been accused of hiring “princelings” - the offspring of the Chinese elite -- in their Hong Kong offices to boost their chances of business success on the mainland.

But Chin said this kind of alleged nepotism was not welcome. “We aren’t running a ‘sons and daughters programme’ -- choosing them over someone with a Harvard MBA,” he said.

Police arrest Australian for threatening local

KUTA - The North Kuta Police Department, Bali, arrested an Australian citizen who had allegedly threatened a villa’s staff member on Tuesday night (July 1).

“We held a rummage at ZIva and Boutique Villa in Kerobokan, Kuta, for FI, an Australian tourist, with passport number N4667572,” said Chief of North Kuta Police Adjunct Commissioner Ronny Riantoko in Kuta on Wednesday.

The issue started when IF, who had booked the villa from June 26 to July 3, 2014, enquired the receptionist on Monday night (June 30) about his check-out time.

A staff member explained to IF about the villa’s regulation that the check-out time was 12 a.m. of Indonesian Central Time, but IF asked for leaving at 9 p.m.

As the staff member was explaining further that additional charges will be applicable if a guest wants a late check-out, Igor went to his room and brought back a gun, and then threatened the staff.

Besides pointing the gun at the staff, IF also shouted that he was a Russian soldier and his commander was staying at a villa nearby in Pangkung Sari Street, in North Kuta area.

The staff member, who was threatened, had reported to his boss and then called the North Kuta Police.

BULELENG - During the event of Lake Buyan Festival which was just closed, one of the attractions performed was what is locally called “Sapi Gerumbungan” and in English roughly translated as “Bull Race”.

Sapi Gerumbungan is acknowledged as a unique attraction which is only found in the North Bali, in the Regency of Buleleng. It is a blended of sport, race and art. A pair of bull is harnessed together with a yoke to pull a sort of rake which in Balinese is called “lampit”, usually used to flatten the muddy soil in the wet rice field before it planted with new seeds of rice.

A huge wooden bell then is hung on the neck of the respective bull. The wooden bell makes distinctive sound while the pair of bull is running due to the thumping bell.

The man as a jokey sits on the end of the rake directing the running bulls, whipping them to run faster. The jockey once a while pulls the string of the bridle to make the bull raise its head to run elegantly.

In the days gone by, Sapi Gerumbungan was held before the planting season. It was ritual for a good harvest, sport, entertainment and fun. The event of Sapi Gerumbungan was held on a wet muddy rice field and in such condition the bulls were not able to run fast but striving more slowly but elegantly due to the muddy soil. A farmer usually invited the other farmers to join the race of Sapi Gerumbungan and the winner was not necessarily the fastest but many factors must be taken into the consideration such as the physically size of the bulls, the style of the running bulls, the sound of the “gerumbungan” and discipline of the jockey. The winner was not awarded a trophy or other reward but only a short of applause and later having fun together enjoying the meal served by the host.

Nowadays, the farmers gradually changing the means of plowing the rice field using tractor instead of rake pulled by bulls. The gradually eroding availability of rice field gnawed away by development of houses, the unique event of gerumbungan is also rarely held and it is worried that in not so long future it may extinct to exist.

The Local Government of Buleleng is trying its utmost to preserve this unique event by holding it on special days such as during the celebration of the Independent Day of the Republic of Indonesia and as mentioned above during the Lake Buyan Festival. The event of sapi gerumbungan is also widely promoted as tourist attraction that is only found in the North Bali, officially named the “Kabupaten Buleleng”. (nyoman suwela)

DENPASAR - A New Zealand woman was jailed for 10 months on the Indonesian resort island of Bali Wednesday after she was caught with a half-smoked hash joint.

Leeza Ormsby was arrested in February after police raided a villa in the tourist area of Kuta, and found the joint in her bag as well as a large stash of hash and ecstasy in a cupboard.

The 37-year-old, who was based in Sydney before her arrest, admitted to smoking the joint but insisted the other drugs were not hers.

After investigating, police sought charges against her only over the joint, which contained 0.3 grams of hash, and said that the hash and ecstasy in the cupboard would form part of a

separate probe.

Presiding judge Parulian Saragih told a court in the Balinese capital Denpasar Wednesday that Ormsby had been found guilty of illegal drug use, and handed her a 10-month sentence.

It was less than the 15 months sought by prosecutors, but the judge said she had “confessed to the crime and will not repeat it”.

After the sentencing, Ormsby thanked the panel of judges.

Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest anti-narcotics laws, including the death sentence for drug-smuggling.

Bali attracts millions of tourists every year with its pristine, palm-fringed beaches but foreigners are regularly caught with drugs on the hard-partying island.

Condition of minimal supply of water kindles residents to take initiative by making use of mountain spring connected to every home of residents through water pipe.

Ketut Sri Wahyuni, 30, a local resident told that she used mountain spring for daily consumption and cooking needs. The natural water she got could not flow to her home every day but every other day. “It’s a mountain spring, sir. It flows every other day, not every day,” said Wahyuni who worked as trader of peanut brittle snacks, Wednesday morning (Jul 2).

Wahyuni explained that she also anticipated

the limited amount of clean water supply with the help of kids around her house. She worked together to collect water using a bucket and stored it in a cistern measuring 3 x 4 meters. It was estimated to hold up to 20 to 25 liters of water. “Like the condition today (Wednesday— Ed), the water just flowed from the top of the mountain. Aside from this water, we have no other water source,” she explained. During his bustles of selling various kinds of peanut brittle,

she paid the children around her house to help collect water from the water source into the cistern. The wage given to the children until the cistern contained full of water was ranging from IDR 5,000 to IDR 10,000. It was good enough to fill in their school holiday.

Meanwhile, Putu Krishna Natha, 9, a fourth grade student of the SDN 3 Suwug elementary school admitted that he collected water every day and could earn IDR 5,000. “I do it every day, sir, during my school holiday. For this, I will be paid at IDR 5,000,” he said. Similar opinion was expressed by Ketut Rediastini, 9. She was happy to help collect water for her neighbor. “I collect the money to buy snacks,” she said. (dgk)

Abe said he was satisfied that a North Korean investigation committee has the mandate to carry out a serious investigation into the abductions, though previous deals with the North have fallen through. Japan will continue to abide by U.N. sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs.

“We have determined that an unprecedented framework has been established, where an organization that can make decisions at a national level ... will be at the forefront of the investigations,” Abe said. “However, this is only a start. We are determined to do everything we can, with a renewed effort, toward a comprehensive resolution.”

Abe’s decision is to be formally approved by his Cabinet on Friday, after the committee holds its first meeting. The announcement follows talks between North Korean and Japanese negotiators in Beijing earlier this week. North Korea’s state media put out their first report on the talks shortly after Abe’s announcement, saying the North’s negotiators briefed their Japanese

counterparts on the composition of the committee and how it will work.

“Both sides agreed to take necessary measures in the days ahead, while getting in touch with each other through a diplomatic channel,” said the report by the Korean Central News Agency.

In Seoul, Foreign Ministry spokesman Noh Kwang-il said South Korea looks forward to an early resolution of the abduction issue. But he said any steps taken

by Japan shouldn’t undermine international cooperation on the North Korean nuclear and missile standoffs.

“The government of the Republic of Korea once again stresses that the Japan-North Korea consultations, including on easing Japan’s unilateral sanctions on North Korea, should, by all means, be held in a transparent manner and that all the relevant measures

by Japan should be taken in a way that does not undermine the coordination among the ROK, the U.S. and Japan on North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues,” Noh told a regular briefing.

WASHINGTON — Intelligence officials are concerned about a new al-Qaida effort to create a bomb that would go undetected through airport security, a counterterrorism official said, prompting the U.S. to call for tighter security measures at some foreign airports.

The counterterrorism official, who would not be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, declined Wednesday to describe the kind of information that triggered the warning. But officials in the past have raised concerns about non-metallic explosives being surgically implanted inside a traveler’s body, designed to be undetectable in pat-downs or metal detectors.

The U.S. has been planning for additional measures for the past month, a counterterrorism official said, adding there was no immediate threat that led to the announcement by the Homeland Security Department that it was requesting tighter security abroad.

American intelligence has picked up indications that bomb makers from al-Qaida’s Yemen affiliate have traveled to Syria to link up with the al-Qaida affiliate there. The groups are working to perfect an explosive device that could foil airport security, according to the counterterrorism official.

Americans and others from the West have traveled to Syria over the past year to join al-Nusra Front’s fight against the Syrian government.

The fear is that fighters with a U.S. or Western passport — and therefore subject to less stringent security screening — could carry such a bomb onto an American plane.

Al-Qaida’s affiliate in Yemen, called al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, long has been fixated on bringing down airplanes with hidden explosives. It was behind failed and thwarted plots involving suicide bombers with explosives designed to hide inside underwear and explosives hidden inside printer cartridges shipped on cargo planes.

Dior Homme celebrates updated classics Agence France-Presse

PARIS - Dior Homme designer Kris Van Assche celebrated the updated classic at Paris fashion while Korea’s Songzio jazzed up cool, summer looks with metallic print and big pockets.

On day four of men’s fashion, Van Assche said he delved into Christian Dior’s world for a collection in which the “bourgeois meets the artist”.

“I wanted a sense of renewal and an idea of Christian Dior’s artistic milieu to come through as well as his love of formality and tradition,” he said.

The result was formal, navy suits with an emphasis on the tuxedo and traditional pinstripe. Nautical touches, a reference to the Normandy-born Dior’s love of the sea, came in the form of toggle fasteners and striped knit vests over shirts to create what Van Assche called “a new form of three piece suit”.

The Belgian designer said he was also influenced by a letter dating from the 1950s he found in the Dior archives. In the letter, Dior, who founded the Christian Dior fashion house in 1946, wrote about the importance of maintaining traditions.

“Traditions have to be maintained so they can be passed on to future generations,” he wrote.

“In troubled times like ours we must maintain these traditions which are our luxury and the flower of our civilisation,” he added.

Van Assche turned the handwrit-

ten letter into a print which he used throughout the collection.

Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld described the clothes as “very modern classic, updated classic”.

“Classic -- if it is only classic -becomes boring. You need to freshen it with modernity,” he told reporters after the show.

US actor Ansel Elgort and Asian actor and boy band star Vic Chou were also among those on the front row at the show.

Elsewhere on Saturday, South Korean designer Songzio took the “configuration and shape of wood” as the inspiration for his latest collection.

The designer sent out oversized coats, boxy shirts, and wide, pleated shorts. Standout looks included a knit tunic ensemble and sleeveless, transparent shirt with gold-coloured metallic print. Big pockets popped up on the front of shirts and the back of shorts.

As well as his signature palette of dark navy and tones of black, there was also white and cream, vivid orange and midnight blue.

Songzio picked up the gold in black leather sandals while other footwear had big straps high over the ankle.

LONDON - Julian Assange has been asked to star in a fashion show by British designer Ben Westwood at Ecuador’s London embassy, where the WikiLeaks founder is currently holed up in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Former erotic photographer Westwood, son of legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, wants “good looking” Assange, 42, to appear with six other models as part of a fringe event during London Fashion Week in September.

“Julian is a popular hero,” the designer said in a statement given to AFP. “He has done a great deal to change public opinion.

“Through WikiLeaks people have been able to compare the facts with the official version of the story.

“He is a good-looking man and I hope he is going to model,” he added.

Mother Vivienne is also a keen supporter of Assange, and wore a T-shirt with the slogan “I am Julian Assange” when she paid him a visit at

the embassy in 2012.

Other celebrities to visit Assange have included Lady Gaga and director Oliver Stone.

Hollywood A-lister George Clooney has been invited to the show, which is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s costume in the spaghetti western films, according to Westwood’s PR spokesman.

Assange first sought refuge at the embassy on June 19, 2012, to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is under investigation on allegations of sexual assault.

Anti-rape campaigner Jill Saward criticised the decision to ask Assange to model as “distasteful”.

“It’s fashionable to get on board (with his cause),” she told the Times.

“I find it really distasteful. What they should be saying is go and clear your name and then we will support you, but to hold this event for a man who has cost this government millions of pounds is wrong.

“The message that’s going to come across is ‘We don’t care what he might have done’.”

DENPASAR - The efforts to smooth the Benoa Bay reclamation still continue. On Tuesday (Jul 1), a coordinative meeting was held by Bali government with the representatives of the agencies from Badung County and Denpasar Municipality. As a result, the Badung and Denpasar government worried about the impacts of the reclamation.

In response the issue, the environmentalist Ketut Sugiana revealed on Wednesday (Jul 2) that the fundamental matters to be clarified first was the juridical boundaries of local government in the sea. “It should take firm action, so that if the government worries it should not issue the permit.

Without the reclamation, what are the losses to be suffered by the people of Bali?” he asked.

Sugiana added the implementation of Article 18 (7) of Law No.32/2004 seemed to remain unclear. Legally, the management of the sea as far as 12 miles belonged to provincial authority, while one third of it belonged to the authority of the county/ municipality. “Who has the jurisdiction at the position of the planned

reclamation? If it indeed belongs to regional authority, so the provision of the regulation lies in the region based on the prevailing legislation including the regional bylaw on the Regional Spatial Plan,” said Sugiana.

According to him, if the management authority lay in the jurisdiction of county/municipal government, the management permit would also belong to the county/municipal government. In principle, said Sugiana, as long as the authority lay in county/ municipal government, the environmental impact analysis submitted by the initiator should be assessed by the same authority. If the jurisdiction belonged to the province, the province also had the right to assess. “This must be made clear and explicit. All

the impacts on the island and the people of Bali must be considered,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rector of the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Ketut Suastika, confirmed the findings of scientists of the Udayana University emphatically declared it unfit. The research was conducted by a joint team, including the expert in the environmental, cultural and economic studies.

DENPASAR – A mask dance entitled “Bangke Maong” that tells about the story of Raja Dalem from Gelgel Kingdom was performed at Bali Art Festival (BAF) on Thursday, July 3, 2014. The show that performed by artist from Petang, Badung Regency, was stage at Ratna Stage, Art Center for about two hours.

According to Wayan Griya, who coordinate the troupe from Petang, the story begin when Raja Dalem want to make a peaceful Bali after conquered by Majapahit. But, during his efforts to make a peaceful environment, he found an obstacle from King of Songan that resides in Songan, Bangli.

Raja Dalem sent his assistance, Sira Arya Sentong, to investigate the matter. During Arya Sentong journey to Songan, he held meditation at Ulun Danu Temple. Because of his seriousness in meditation, Ulun Danu God gave him a dagger that called Ki Bangke Maong. After receiving the dagger, Arya Sentong tries to talk with residents of Songan and reach an agreement. (wan)

Tens of foreigners die unearthly

DENPASAR - Bali as a tourist destination is certainly visited by many foreign travelers. When spending holidays, some few travelers were unfortunate, sick to death. The mortuary of Sanglah Hospital always receives the body of foreign traveler each month. Based on the existing data up to June 2014, the body of 78 foreign travelers from various countries came into the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital. Of that amount, 14 of them died unearthly such as due to poisoning (2), drowning (6), traffic accident (3), hanging itself (3) and murder (2).

Chief of Functional Medical Staff of Sanglah Hospital Medical Forensic, IB Putu Alit, said that murder case occurred in February to an American citizen named Paul Robb and in May to an English woman named Anne Maria. The 78 bodies were foreign travelers from 24 countries including Australia (15), the Netherlands (9), Ireland (1), Germany (3), Iran (1), the U.S. (12), Canada (4), Timor Leste (3), China (3), Poland (2), Hungary (1), Japan (6), Russia (2), France (4), Italy (1), England (1), Singapore (3), the Philippines (1), Korea (2), Malaysia (1), Switzerland (1), India (1) and Belgium (1). “There was also a case related to a Korean who was mugged while riding a motorcycle. At the incident, the victim fell down and died,” said Alit.

Regarding the financing, either for the body care, deposit cost or delivery of the body was on the account of family or police if the deceased got involved in a criminal case. According to Alit, the rate was different between the service provided for foreign travelers and domestic residents, except for the foreign travelers had owned a temporary residence permit (KITAS). “In some cases, there are charges paid by the embassy, but they are mostly paid by families,” said Alit.

The difference of rate for the handling of body of foreign travelers from domestic residents could be manifold. For instance, the rate charged for basic service to a body was IDR 50,000 for domestic residents and IDR 600,000 for foreign travelers having no KITAs document. According to Alit, higher rate was charged to foreign travelers because they did not get any subsidy from the state unless having a KITAS. (kmb24)

A month, dozens kg of drugs smuggled into Kerobokan Prison Bali Post

DENPASAR - Drug smuggling into the Kerobokan Prison (Prison of Class II A Denpasar) is getting more worrying. It was proved by two smuggling cases, namely a raid and a delivery directed to Kerobokan Prison in June 2014. The drug evidence secured included 32.4 kg of marijuana, 100 grams of crystal meth and seven packages of new drug, Ajapa-japa. However, none of the perpetrators in the Kerobokan Prison could have been detected.

It began from the smuggling that would be committed by two men from East Java named Ahmad Imron Rosidi, 34, and Juwarso, 26, Saturday (Jun 7). Unmitigatedly, dried marijuana weighing 3 kg was about to be smuggled into Kerobokan Prison. The goods of perpetrator were put in a red large plastic bag where at the top were placed fresh vegetables, tomatoes and carrots. When searched, at the bottom was found a thick bundle tightened with brown tape. Having been checked, in fact, the officers found dried marijuana and a bottle of liquor.

The Badung Police Narcotics Unit conducting a development against the smuggling into the Kerobokan Prison encountered 15.3 kg of marijuana wrapped in 16 packs in a dorm room located on Jalan Tukad Ciliwung, Kerta Sari hamlet, Panjer village, South Denpasar. On the whole, a total of 18.3 kg of dried marijuana has been secured in the Badung Police Headquarters.

Mohamad Zein Akasa, 29, Sunday (Jun 22) who would smuggle drugs into the Kerobokan Prison.

From the hands of perpetrator, the officers seized evidence in the form of a Smartfren hand phone, an iPhone, a Nokia hand phone as well as seven packages of marijuana and an unpacked package.

Even, there was an allegation if the seven packages of marijuana belonged to a new type with the brand of Ajapa-Japa.

Another interesting case was the drug smuggling reportedly controlled by a prisoner in the Kerobokan Prison. The two perpetrators consisting of Alexander S, 33, and Franky Kesauliya Kalumata, 46, were arrested by the officers of Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit, Tuesday (Jun 17).

Both suspects confessed that the delivery of marijuana weighing 14.1 kg was from Medan to Bali under the control of a drug dealer with the initials GW remaining to crouch in Kerobokan Prison.

The suspect Alexander admitted that he took the marijuana as commanded by his friend with the

initials GW known in Kerobokan Prison. Then, GW ordered the suspect to take the marijuana from a courier from Medan. If the suspect could do it, he would be paid as much as IDR 2 million. “I was just ordered by him (GW—Ed) to pick up a suitcase containing marijuana in front of the mosque in Kediri, Tabanan, sent from Medan by bus,” he said.

Besides, Alexander admitted to know GW when he was a prisoner in the Kerobokan Prison for his involvement in narcotic case. He was sentenced to prison for 3.2 years and was released in January 2013. “I knew GW while I was still in prison,” he said.

The other smuggling case involving the name of Kerobokan Prison occurred last Thursday (Jun 26) where the ranks of the Customs Office, Renon, secured approximately 100 grams of crystal meth supplied from India. Interestingly, it was rumored to be sent to a prisoner at Kerobokan Prison.

The prisoner itself was involved in drug case in 2012. So far, the Bali Police Drugs Directorate was still

The Head of Kerobokan Prison, Farid Junaidi, when asked for his confirmation said that his party continued to tighten the guard, anticipate the smuggling of illegal drugs into the prison whose 60 percent of prisoners were drug abusers. Responding to the smuggling last month, his party had been monitoring the prisoners through a regular examination. However, his party was still awaiting the results of police investigation. “We’ve regularly monitored. But the investigation is carried out by police. If the identity can have been revealed, we will immediately secure,” he said.

Prison answered if the suspect connecting the case to prison house was a common mode for interrupting the development made by police. “Whatever the confession of the perpetrator (suspect of drug— Ed) is, I will wait for the result of police investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Directorate of Bali Police Narcotics Unit, Bambang Yugisworo, when asked for his confirmation on the rampant drug smuggling attempt to Kerobokan Prison said that his party continued to conduct investigation related to drug trafficking in Bali, including the smuggling into the Kerobokan Prison. “We’re still making the investigation, so when the perpetrator has been arrested we’ll release the information,” he said. ‘Sumber Bunga’ boat drowned in Pekutatan

NEGARA - Bad weather condition in the waters of Jembrana makes the fishing activity to catch fish disturbed. Even, the Sumber Bunga fishing boat driven by Sahrani, 45, drowned in the waters of Pulukan, Pekutatan, Wednesday (Jul 2). The boat with 17 crews was drowned while fishing.

Even though the boat was drowned, the entire crews could survive after rescued by another boat passing around the location.

Based on information, the incident occurred around 03:00 a.m. The Sumber Bunga boat caught fish with another fellow boat specially transporting fishing nets. Since the departure from Pengambengan Pier

on Tuesday night (Jul 1) the boat did not have any problems.

However, while catching fish in the waters of Pulukan (Pekutatan), the weather suddenly turned hostile.

Strong winds accompanied by high waves suddenly hit the silent boat.

As the weather was getting worse, the captain decided to return home though getting no fish. A surviving

crew, Buhayi, 27, said the boat was drowned as struck by high waves.

The boat containing no fish easily turned over after rolled by waves. Meanwhile, the crews jumped out to rescue themselves.

They were floating in the sea and then rescued by another fellow boat in charge of catching fish. Meanwhile, the reversed boat could no

longer be rescued along with the machine worth hundreds of millions of rupiahs.

Sahrani, the boat captain, said the entire crew survived, while the boat was drowned at a depth of approximately 100 meters. As a result of the accident at sea, the boat owner suffered a loss worth over IDR 100 million. (kmb26)

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Lohan sues over ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ game

NEW YORK) — Adam Levine knows pop stars-turned-actors are greeted suspiciously. And he’s hesitant to make any grandiose declarations about suddenly transforming into an actor. But he also can’t help himself.

Following his movie debut in the recently released “Begin Again,” the Maroon 5 frontman is exuberant about a potentially budding movie career.

“It really made me fall in love,” said Levine about “Begin Again” in a recent interview. “It’s the very beginning of something really cool.”

The transition is unusually seamless for Levine in “Begin Again,” a naturalistic indie about musicians in New York by “Once” director John Carney. Levine plays an aspiring musician, the boyfriend to a singersongwriter played by Keira Knightley. But it’s his breakthrough that’s brought them to New York, and his fast-growing fame pulls the couple apart.

“I had been through that before, maybe not the same version,” says Levine of the tumult of sudden fame. “That’s what connected me to this guy. I immediately understood exactly what needed to be done with this character just based on my life’s experience.”

The 35-year-old Levine grew up in Los Angeles, so acting in movies was, he says, always “somewhere in the back of my mind.” Carney approached him about the film and Levine jumped at the chance, working for little pay.

“I knew that I would try doing it,” he says. “Because of the other wonderful things that have happened in my life and my career, I’d been given the opportunity to try

it. I thought to myself, ‘Well, I’m going to try it. I’m not going to not try it.’”

Levine, of course, is familiar with working in front of the camera. Aside from music videos for Maroon 5 and a cameo on “30 Rock,” he’s been a judge on NBC’s “The Voice” since 2011. He also played an arc as a newlywed visiting an insane asylum on FX’s “American Horror Story” in 2012.

“He’s so confident and he’s such a natural entertainer and he’s very comfortable on camera because he does that show and he’s made lots of music videos,” says Knightley.

NEW YORK — Lindsay Lohan is suing the makers of the “Grand Theft Auto” video games. The actress says the latest installment used her image and created a character based on her without her permission. named Lacey Jonas is an “unequivocal” reference to the “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday” star.

The suit says Lohan’s image, voice and styles from her clothing line are depicted. It says the game features West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont hotel, where Lohan once lived.

The character also seeks help skirting paparazzi.

DENPASAR - The Ngurah Rai International Airport of Bali recorded a 1.02 percent increase in the number of outgoing international flights in May, 2014.

In May there were 2,169 international flights from Ngurah Rai, up from 2,147 flights in the previous months, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said.

“The wide bodied aircraft carried 323,569 foreign tourists after enjoying their holidays in Bali, up 4.41 percent from 309,896 in April,” head of the regional office of BPS Panusunan Siregar said on Wednesday.

He said Bali as the main tourist destination in Indonesia recorded growing number of foreign visitors.

In the first five months of 2014, there were already 1.39 million foreign visitors to Bali or an increase of

14.82 percent from 1.21 million in the same period last year.

Most of the holiday makers came to Bali via the Ngurah Rai airport, directly from their respective countries, Siregar said, adding only 17,394, who are passenger of tourist boats, entered Bali via seaport.

Siregar said the increase in the number of visitors was also followed with an increase in baggage hat rose 4.27 percent to 4,252 tons in May from 4,079 tons in April. The volume of cargoes, however, declined 12.14 percent to 2,181.3 tons from 2,482.8 tons.

Siregar said a significant increase was also recorded in domestic flights, up 8.15 percent to 3,411 flights.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers in sea transport leaving Bali also increase 12.76 percent to 164,085 people in May from 145,514 in April.

The ships carried 161,217 tons of cargoes or an increase of 7.20 percent from 150,392 tons in April, Siregar said.
