K-pop stars BTS make history as first Korean group to play at Wembley LONDON - Boy band BTS have become the first Korean act to play at Wembley after selling out their first night in 90 minutes. The seven-member K-pop group played to a packed stadium of 60,000 fans on Saturday night as part of their LOVE YOURSELF: SPEAK YOURSELF stadium world tour. Performing hits including Not Today, IDOL, and FAKE LOVE, the concert was streamed live across the globe, as well as beamed to theatres all across Japan. On Friday, fans also flocked to Piccadilly Circus just to see an advertisement by the band for Hyundai on the famous LED screens. Part of the secret to their popularity is fans’ admiration for the band self-producing their music and their dedication to breaking down taboos around mental health and helping young people. Their pop sound is a contrast to much of their lyrics, which deal with topics including suicide.
The group, who have more than 13.3 million followers on Instagram, spoke at the UN last year to launch a project to help empower young people get into quality work and education. Their Love Myself project, with UNICEF, campaigned to end youth violence. Sky News spoke to fans queuing up to get into the Wembley Arena on Saturday night. One girl, who travelled from Yorkshire with a friend, said she credits BTS with helping to save her life during a period of poor mental health and issues at home. “I’ve really liked them since 2016 because they helped me through a whole lot. I don’t think I’d be here. “We’ve travelled from Yorkshire to be here just because they really helped me through so much I want to be able to experience that [them live]. “I found them at the point I was giving up.” (net)

Some 15 million people were expected to clear out of Jakarta alone -- about half the megacity’s population -- in an annual exodus known as “mudik” that leaves the capital’s usually traffic-clogged streets nearly empty. The migration takes a toll on Indonesia’s roads, and travellers who pack their families and luggage into cars or motorbikes to face gruelling trips that can last up to 24 hours. In past years scores of people
have been killed in road accidents during the exodus. Highways on Java island, which is home to more than half of Indonesia’s 260 million people, were packed with travellers eager to celebrate the end of Ramadan with loved ones. Holidaymakers also crowded into airports, train stations and ports to reach destinations across the 17,000 island archipelago. Some even made their getaways
on a bajaj, a three-wheeled taxi usually confined to city streets. “The travel time will be between 14 to 20 hours. If the traffic is okay, it’s 14 hours but if things are congested it will take 20 hours or even more,” said Jakarta-based bajaj driver Sugeng Puji who was headed to Kebumen in Central Java. But unlike previous years when travellers were stuck in hours-long traffic jams, this year’s congestion was relatively light. Dwi Soejatmoko, who was making the 550 kilometre (340 miles) journey from Jakarta to Indonesia’s
cultural capital Yogyakarta, said the trip had so far been headache-free. “There aren’t a lot of traffic jams this year,” he told AFP. “Our car was crawling, but it wasn’t at a standstill.”

Like China’s Lunar New Year holiday or Christmas, the mass movement kicks off an extended holiday when many Indonesians celebrate Eid, the end of the holy fasting month, with family. LOS ANGELES - Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” stomped to the top of the box-office in its opening weekend in North American theaters, taking in an estimated $49 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported. But analysts called the creature feature’s debut disappointing. Its total for the three-day weekend came in far behind the studio’s previous “Godzilla” installment (which opened in 2014 with $93 million), and the new film cost $200 million to make. The plot has eco-terrorists stealing a sonar device developed by scientist Emma (Vera Farmiga) to control the title monster; her ex-husband (Kyle Chandler) is recruited to track it down even as Godzilla clashes with monstrous rivals like winged Mothra and three-headed Ghidorah. The film has drawn tepid reviews: The Guardian called the sound track “thunderingly tedious.” Slipping to second spot was
Disney’s live-action “Aladdin,” at $42.3 million. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the feel-good film stars Will Smith as the fast-talking genie and Canadian actor Mena Massoud as the wily title character as he seeks the attention of the lovely Jasmine (Naomi Scott). In third came Paramount biopic “Rocketman,” with Taron Egerton playing the part (and singing the words) of Elton John. The film, which has drawn inevitable comparisons to last year’s hugely popular “Bohemian Rhapsody” about Queen and Freddie Mercury, took in an even $25 million. Egerton has garnered strong reviews, including the highest of praise from the 72-year-old John himself, who told Hollywood Re-
porter that in watching the movie “I didn’t think it was Taron. I thought it was me.” Fourth spot went to psychological thriller “Ma” from Universal and Blumhouse Productions, at $18.3 million -- a solid opening weekend for a film that cost a mere $5 million to make. Octavia Spencer stars as a middle-aged woman who lets some teenagers party in her basement before things turn scary and weird. And in fifth was Lionsgate’s action film “John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum,” at $11.1 million. Keanu Reaves again stars as retired hitman Wick, this time being chased by an army of killers after a large contract is put on his head. (afp)
