LOS ANGELES - Reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her rap star husband Kanye West are expecting their second child.

Kardashian broke the news Sunday night during a preview of the next season of her show “Keeping up With The Kardashians.”

“I just got the blood test back, and I am pregnant!” Kim, beaming, told her sister Khloe.

Kardashian and West, who recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary, had their first child -- a girl named

North -- on June 15, 2013.

The couple had struggled to overcome fertility problems -- a battle that Kardashian openly discussed on the reality show.

She did not specify the due date for the new baby.

In April, Time magazine named Kardashian, 34, and West, 37, to its list of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Clint Eastwood to make biopic of pilot ‘Sully’ Sullenberger

NEW YORK — Clint Eastwood will follow his box-office sensation “American Sniper” with a biopic of pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.

Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Eastwood will direct and produce the not-yet-titled drama as his next film. The film is to

be adapted from Sullenberger’s 2009 memoir, “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters,” which chronicled his personal history before he famously landed a US Airways plane in the Hudson River in New York in 2009.

“I am very glad my story is in

the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood,” Sullenberger said in a statement.

It will be Eastwood’s first film after the biggest box-office hit of his career. The Oscar-winning “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, made $543.4 million glob-

ally for Warner Bros. and became the top domestic release of 2014.

The film will be produced by Frank Marshall and Allyn Stewart and penned by Todd Komarnicki.

BI optimistic Bali’s economy continuing to grow DENPASAR - The Bank Indonesia (BI) (Province of Bali Division) is optimistic about the continued growth of Bali’s economy given that this year growth is 6.72 percent, a higher figure than projected. The national economic growth projections for this year were revised to 5.1 percent form the proviso projection of 5.4 percent (yoy).

“I am optimistic that Bali’s economy will continue to grow, possibly reaching as much as 7.1 percent (yoy). The slowdown earlier this year was temporarily” said Chief Representative of BI for the Province of Bali, Dewi Setyowati, in Denpasar.

According to Setyowati, this optimism is based on peak tourist season, growth in the financial, service and agricultural sectors. “Bali tourism continues to increase from year to year and so does the financial sector, which affects Bali’s overall economy,” she said.

It said that the economic growth of Bali in the first quarter of 2015 reached 6.20 percent (yoy). This figure is still higher than the national economy as it has been for the last few years.

“In terms of supply, the slow-

down of economic growth in Bali is in line with the weak growth in the fields of agriculture, manufacturing and construction,” she explained.

She added that aside from facing the problem of agricultural land conversion, the agricultural sector still faces other problems like weather anomalies, irrigation issues and pest attacks. Meanwhile, the industrial faces the rise in production costs and similar sluggishness as the with the construction market.

“On the other hand, growth in businesses such as accommodations, food and beverage which prominent business fields in Bali, remain is a stable condition thus preventing the slowdown from deepening,” she said.

In the second quarter of 2015, Dewi Setyowati estimated that the economy of Bali would continue to

grow, although perhaps less compared to the same quarter last year.

The growth in the second quarter of 2015 is due to strong consumption and rising investments. This is reflected in the results of a consumer survey conducted by the Bank of Indonesia’s Bali office, that showed an increases from 101.5 in March 2015 to 103.18 in April 2015. Increases in investments are primarily driven by the realization of government projects in the second quarter of 2015. Angelina disappearance alleged triggered by family issues

DENPASAR - The disappearance of 8 year old Angeline, sixteen days ago still remains a mystery with no clues as to her whereabouts. The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas-PA) is somewhat concerned with the fate of this young girl so on Tuesday (Jun 2) they returned to the East Denpasar Police.

Chairman of the Commission, Arist Merdeka Sirait, suspects that the girl’s dissapareance was triggered by family issues, including the matter of inheritance.

Arist, went to the East Denpasar Police to coordinate with them in the investigation. So far, there has been no significant developments in locating the victim.

Arist said that his party suspects that the missing elementary school student is victim to family problems and violence. According to Arist, although the victim is a foster child, she still has the right to inherit as much as 60 percent from the family who care for her. “Based on our research, Angeline received inheritance rights in accordance with the will of her de-

ceased adoptive father, an American citizen,” he said.

The second fact that is suspected is that the missing victim suffered violence at the hands of her adoptive mother, Margareth which caused the child to flee from her home on Jalan Sedap Malam 26, Denpasar. “School authorities and school mates , including her daily friends serve as key witness. If the chickens that the young girl cared for were ever missing or dead, her adoptive mother would immediately fly into a screaming fit.

Benoa harbor hit by theft

DENPASAR - Although located in a special area, Benoa Harbor is still subject to theft cases. Four cans of resin (boat glue) owned by PT Bali Baramundi located on Jalan Tuna III, Benoa, Friday (May 29) were stolen by the culprit with the initials YP and DA. According to the Chief of the Benoa Harbor Police, I Nyoman Gatra,, the two suspects were arrested around six o’clock in the morning on Tuesday (Jun 2). “YP opened the doors of the company while DA took the four jerrycans containing resin,” said Gatra.

After the resin was hoisted onto his motorcycle, DA gave IDR 600,000 worth of cash to YP. DA accompanied by SA then took the stolen goods out of Benoa Harbor and upon arrival at the Pesanggaran traffic lights, unloaded the items. “Once unloaded, Saniman who works as a scavenger returned to Benoa Harbor,” he said.

DA sold a jerrycan of resin to Agus Riyadi for IDR 500,000.

Meanwhile the company reported the loss of its belongings to the Benoa Harbor Police, on Friday (May 29). “Based on the crime scene investigation and examination of witnesses, suspicion lead to the person named YP. After interrogation, the suspect confessed,” explained the former deputy chief of Kuta Police.

DA was arrested after being lured by YP with the promise of being paid the remaining IDR 400,000. DA agreed to meet YP next to the office of the Benoa Water Police Directorate of Benoa where he was arrested. “Based on the results of the investigation, DA, YP and AR have been named as suspects, while SA only serves as a witness in this case,” said Gatra. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BANGLI - The demand for imitation gold flowers produced by craftsmen at Undisan village, Tembuku subdistrict remains high.

Demand for these flowers not only comes from residents of Bangli but from all over Bali. Typically the imitation gold flowers are used as decoration in Balinese customary payas and other ritual paraphernalia.

Imitation gold flower crafter, Wayan Budiastuti, recently said that so far the demand for the imitation gold flowers that she produces is still high and said that she had no significant problems with marketing.

However, the price of raw material to make the imitation gold flower is going up. A sheet of the raw materials that she uses costs IDR 60,000. “A sheet can produce 3-4 scores,” she said.

Budiastuti she can produce up to 5 scores a day. A score of imitation ylang-ylang flower containing 20 pieces and is usually sold for IDR 60,000 to customers from all over Bali. “In addition to customers in Denpasar, I sometimes sell to customers in Singaraja, Klungkung and other counties too,” she said. Ahead of ritual season coming up in June and August, the demand for imitation gold leaf flowers has already started to go up. (kmb40)

Nearly one in three cases of depression among young British adults may be traced to having been bullied as adolescents, a study said Tuesday.

Teenage bullying linked to adult depression PARIS - Nearly one in three cases of depression among young British adults may be traced to having been bullied as adolescents, a study said Tuesday.

Researchers published figures in The BMJ journal to back anecdotal evidence that victimised teenagers often go on to struggle later in life.

They had trawled through the findings of a large project in Bristol, western England, that has tracked the health of 14,500 residents since the early 1990s.

In one phase of the project, nearly 4,000 participants completed a questionnaire at the age of 13, and were assessed again five years later for symptoms of depressive illness.

Out of 683 people who reported they had been bullied at least once a week at the age of 13, nearly 15 percent were depressed at 18.

This was nearly triple the rate for teenagers who had not been picked on.

Examples of bullying included kids being excluded by their peers, having lies spread about them, their belongings stolen, and being threatened, blackmailed or even beaten.

When other possible causes

were added to the mix -- such as behavioural or mental problems or family difficulties -- the statistical link with adult depression weakened, but the rate was still twice as high as for non-bullied peers.

Among those frequently victimised, 10 percent experienced depression symptoms for more than two years, the study found.

In the non-bullied group, only four percent suffered a depression lasting so long.

The team calculated that as many as 30 percent of depression cases identified in their study may have been the result of bullying, though the study could not show direct cause-and-effect.

Anti-bullying programmes in schools have been disappointing, noted the researchers.

“Interventions during adolescence could help to reduce the burden of depression later in life.” (afp)

Breastfeeding may lower risk of leukemia

MIAMI - Breastfeeding a baby for at least six months may be linked to a lower risk of childhood leukemia, according to a review of previously published research on the topic Monday.

The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics suggest that breastfed babies have a 19 percent lower risk of the blood cancer compared to babies who are given formula or who are breastfed for a shorter period of time.

“The many potential preventive health benefits of breastfeeding should also be communicated openly to the general public, not

only to mothers, so breastfeeding can be more socially accepted and facilitated,” said the study led by Efrat Amitay and Lital KeinanBoker of the University of Haifa, Israel.

Their study reviewed 18 past studies on the association between breastfeeding and leukemia, the most common childhood cancer.

It accounts for about 30 percent of all pediatric cancers.

While none of the studies explained why or how breast milk could be lowering the risk of childhood leukemia, the researchers suggested it contains “many immunologically active components

and anti-inflammatory defense mechanisms that influence the development of an infant’s immune system.”

However, not all experts agree that the findings are the last word on the matter.

“The suggestion that children who had been breastfed might be at a reduced risk of childhood leukemia has been around for decades,” said Valerie Beral, professor of epidemiology at the University of Oxford.

“However previous research, and that described in this new report, are not sufficiently rigorous to confirm or refute such a claim.”

She noticed parents were asked about what they had done around the time their children were born, and thus “parents’ memory of what they had done years ago was affected by the knowledge that their child had leukemia.”

“The researchers had no way of assessing such an important potential problem, which could well have distorted their results,” she added.

According to Mel Greaves, director of the Centre for Evolution and Cancer at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, the type of cancer studied -- acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)

-- is uncommon and only affects about one in 2,000 children.

“This study also fits in with increasing evidence that infants who are exposed to infections –- through attending day care or contact with older siblings -– are less vulnerable to this type of leukemia,” said Greaves.

“Extended breastfeeding and natural infectious exposures in infancy were part and parcel of human life until relatively recently.

“The increasing incidence of ALL in modern, affluent and hygienic societies may be an unintended consequence of these social changes.” (afp)

Based on observations at a number of markets in Tabanan, most food prices are still normal. Price hike only occurs to some commodities such as onions, garlic and cayenne although the increase is not significant and still within reasonable limit. “Some commodities experiences price hike, while the others show price decrease,” said Wiryawan.

One of the commodities whose price drops is rice. Such price drop, according to Wiryawan, happens due to having entered harvest season. Abundant rice production is predicted to be able to suppress the price of rice in the market and will not experience turmoil of price hike during the upcoming fasting month.

In the meantime, one of the rice collectors in Tabanan, Bagus Siswaputra, revealed that the price of rice is stable and even tends to go down from the previous price. Currently the price of rice for medium quality is IDR 8,000 per kg, while the premium quality is around IDR 9,400 per kg.

He added that the price of rice tending to be stable happens due to the supply from farmers is relatively abundant in line with entering the harvest season. He admitted that in addition to buying rice production from local farmers, his party also buys rice from the NTB and Java. (kmb24)

Sexual abuse cases in children more dominant in Bali

DENPASAR - Cases of child abuse in Bali are getting more alarming. It is evidenced by the increase in the cases of child abuse in this year 2015. Based on the data from the Integrated Reporting on Women and Children Abuse Victim (T2P2KTKPA) of Sanglah Hospital, from January to May 2015 there were 11 cases of child abuse where all of the cases related to sexual abuse. Three children become the victims of sodomy, and eight victims were girls. When compared to the case in 2014, there were only six cases in the first five months.

“The most cases are sexual abuse in girls,” said Ida Bagus Putu Alit, Chairman of the T2P2KTK-PA of the Sanglah Hospital.

Alit said that the abuse cases against children he frequently handled are mostly committed by unknown perpetrators, while some others are committed by the known.

“In Bali the prominent cases are sexual assault, where through the years it shows the same amount, and they are mostly held through

genital organ, while through anal is rare,” he said.

He continued that most abuse cases against children and women coming to hospital are handled with dualism biomedical concept. In other words, at the same time and the same person has a different position namely as patient and as victim. “As patient, it is administered medically and clinically, while as a victim it is administered forensically and legally to be used for evidence by examining the bruising as violence signs,” he explained.

Signs of violence have several forms, such as physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, neglect and deprivation of freedom. Physical violence results in physical injuries and psychological violence results in mental disorders, for instance due to being reviled. Sexual violence concerns all things either through a contact or not. Neglect means intentionally not to meet the needs.

Example of deprivation of freedom, a wife is prohibited from working,

so that it causes dependence on her husband.

Specifically for violence against children (18 years old and under) is said to refer to the WHO program, namely there are nine steps of handling like discovering information, medical examination, documenting to developmental and psychiatric screening. Physical examination is performed in emergency room by observing whether there are injuries or not and whether committed repeatedly or not.

While sexual abuse is evidenced by many circumstantial evidences.

It means that the evidence must be assembled and analyzed so that they can serve as evidence. A check is performed to see the maturity, the presence or absence of signs of violence, the signs of sexual intercourse, the time of intercourse and the result of sexual intercourse whether it causes pregnancy or mental disorder or a sexually transmitted disease. “They all depend on the case, so that it involves a multidisciplinary team,” he said.

The intercourse can be indicated by the sign of penetration or ejaculation. “The sign of penetration is in the form of injuries to the genitals,” he said. In the meantime, the signs of ejaculation can be seen from the presence of sperm cells and components based on laboratory results.

Ticket price soars high, tourism players at Banyuwedang furious

SINGARAJA - A-hundred-percent rise in the price of admission ticket from Banyuwedang Port at Pejarakan village, Gerokgak, to the Island of Menjangan makes boat drivers and tour guides furious. They consider the determination of price increase for foreign travelers from IDR 20,000 to IDR 200,000 unfair. The increase is triggered by the issuance of the Government Regulation (PP) No.12/2014 governing the admission to the National Park area, and then followed up by the West Bali National Park (TNBB) by dissemination through its circular SE.718 / BTNBB-1/2015.

The increase in admission ticket is recognized by the Group Head of Banyumandi Fishermen, Nyoman Sandi. The rise has been effective since the beginning of June 2015. As a result of the increase in the price of

admission ticket, tourist activity at Banyuwedang Port is deserted. Boat drivers and tour guides expect the Ministry of Forestry can review it.

New price of the admission ticket is considered very high, so that tourism

players and travelers complain about it. Many of travelers even cancel their visit to Menjangan Island.

The Government Regulation No.12/2014 regulates the admission of the National Park area, including the area of Menjangan Island.

Dissemination is then carried out by the TNBB through the circular SE.718/BTNBB-1/2015. Ticket price for foreign travelers rose to IDR 200,000, while domestic travelers at IDR 10,000 on a normal days and IDR 15,000 on holidays and specifically for student is IDR 6,000.

“Ticket price is too expensive, so that many travelers are reluctant to buy it. Obviously it has an impact on

Without taking action, we’re going to be difficult in the future. They will assess if the dissemination and rule enforcement is successful. Mangrove Tour at Jungutbatu Village

Since the year 2000 Jungutbatu village community on the Island of Nusa Lembongan, Klungkung offers a mangrove tour to travelers. Foreign and domestic travelers are taken around to mangrove forest by riding a sampan. This destination can be reached from Sanur and Benoa Harbor by a cruise ship or fast boat.

Nowadays, at this Jungutbatu village has even been formed a group that provide services for mangrove boat tour. Like a public transport, 34 members coalesced into the group also have a queue number when being in operation. “We recruit all the seaweed farmers because they have a sampan. Initially we did not use a

queue, but we then try to negotiate about our future. From the idea, we establish a well-organized group,” said the Mangrove Tour Management Assistant, Gede Adnyana.

Currently, each community has the initiative to promote mangrove tour to travelers.

Now, the mangrove tours continue to grow in line with the rapid development of tourism at Lembongan. At this moment more travelers are escorted by freelance tour guides than supplied by dive cruise dropping in on the island. “Every day at least 10 to 25 sampans take mangrove tour. During high season, we are definitely overwhelmed,”

said Adnyana. He said that during June-July, this featured object is much visited by domestic travelers, while in August is dominated by foreign travelers. Rates are subject to a minimum of IDR 100,000 per sampan with a maximum of four passengers.

“We take side the revenue of IDR 10,000 to the group’s cash. A total of 25 percent goes to village authority, 25 percent to group organization and 50 percent of the cash to the group because each month we also make conservation here, or doing environmental cleanup,” said Adnyana.

Conservation activities in the mangrove area of Jungutbatu are

done seriously. Each group members is routinely required to clean up the mangrove area and make the area look like ever before. On the other hand, the groups or surrounding communities also never cleared the mangrove to make the tour path. In other words, these routes are still natural because it looks like ever before. “If they do not join the cleanup, they will be imposed with a fine of IDR 5,000,” said Adnyana.

Group members seem to have understood about the mangrove conservation. Nyoman Sudiaya, for example, clearly mentions some benefits of the mangrove forests.

Actually, the owner of the line number 31 has now been half a century old. “It functions to prevent tsunami and high waves because high waves once occurred here. Besides, it also becomes the native home to fish and crabs,” said Sudiaya doubling as a seaweed farmer. Considering the vital function of the mangrove, Sudiaya and local residents finally comply with the government rules that prohibit the clearing of mangroves for firewood. “Now, people are not allowed to take firewood here, to prevent waves. Anybody taking the firewood here can be imposed with a fine of IDR 100 million,” he continued. (BTN/kmb)

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that 18 bodies had been pulled from the boat, which was floating with a sliver of its hull jutting from the grey river water about 36 hours after it capsized. A total of fourteen people have been rescued, but the vast majority of the 456 people on board, many of them elderly tourists, were unaccounted for.

The shallow-draft, multi-decked Eastern Star was traveling upstream Monday night from the eastern city of Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing when it overturned in China’s Hubei Province in what state media reported as a cyclone with winds of up to 80 mph (130 kph).

State media reported that rescuers heard people yelling for help within the overturned hull, and divers on Tuesday rescued a 65-year-old woman and, later, two men who had been trapped. CCTV said more people had been found and were being rescued, but did not say whether they were still inside the overturned hull.

The yelling was heard Tuesday, and it is not known if any sounds were heard Wednesday. CCTV said rescuers would possibly support the ship with a giant crane while they cut into portions of the hull.

Thirteen navy divers searched the boat Tuesday, and military authorities said an additional 170 would arrive by Wednesday to vastly expand the pace of those efforts.

Access to the site of the site was blocked by police and paramilitary

troops stationed along the Yangtze river embankment. Scores of trucks belonging to the People’s Armed Police were parked along the verge and at least two ambulances were seeing leaving the area with their lights on and sirens blaring.

Huang Delong, a deck hand on a car ferry crossing the Yangtze several kilometers (miles) upstream of the site, said he was working Monday evening when the weather turned nasty.

“From about 9 p.m. it began raining extremely hard, then the cyclone hit and the wind was really terrifying,” Huang said while crossing the broad river in a steady drizzle Tuesday afternoon.

Huang said he thought it was the worst disaster on that stretch of the river — the world’s third-longest river — in living memory. The official Xinhua News Agency said the sinking could become the country’s worst shipping accident in seven decades.

“We will do everything we can to rescue everyone trapped in there, no matter they’re still alive or not, and we will treat them as our own families,” Hubei military region commander Chen Shoumin said at a news conference shown live on CCTV. The survivors included the ship’s captain and chief engineer, both of whom were taken into police custody, CCTV said. Relatives who gathered in Shanghai, where many of the tourists started their journey by bus, questioned whether the captain did enough to ensure the passengers’ safety and

demanded answers from local officials in unruly scenes that drew a heavy police response.

Xinhua quoted the captain and the chief engineer as saying the four-level Eastern Star sank quickly. The Communist Party-run People’s Daily said the ship sank within two minutes. The overturned ship then drifted about 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) downstream before coming to rest close to shore.

State media originally said there were 458 people on board, but CCTV said Wednesday it had been carrying 405 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and a crew of 46.

The broadcaster said most of the passengers were 50 to 80 years old.

that he grabbed a life jacket with seconds to spare as the ship listed in the storm, sending bottles rolling off tables and suddenly turned all the way over. Zhang, 43, said he drifted in the Yangtze all night despite not being able to swim, reaching shore as dawn approached.

“The raindrops hitting my face felt like hailstones,” he said. “’Just hang in there a little longer,’ I told myself.”

Some survivors swam ashore, but others were rescued after search teams climbed on the upside-down hull.

The 65-year-old woman was rescued by divers who took an extra breathing apparatus up into the bowels of the ship and spent about five minutes teaching her how to use it before bringing her out to safety, Chen said.

TOKYO — The Philippine president is on his sixth visit to Japan in less than five years, signaling his country’s deepening ties with Tokyo amid increasing concerns by both sides about China’s assertiveness in regional seas.

In a speech in Tokyo on Wednesday, President Benigno Aquino III criticized what he called China’s “unlawful territorial claim,” and praised Tokyo for demonstrating solidarity with the Philippines in advocating the problem.

Aquino has been accorded rare state guest status, and also was invited to speak later Wednesday to the upper house of parliament.

During his four-day visit, Aquino will hold talks with Japanese Prime

Minister Shinzo Abe focusing on defense and security ties. The two leaders are expected to sign a deal confirming Japan’s provision of 10 patrol vessels to the Philippine coast guard to bolster its patrolling capability around Manila-claimed South China Sea islands.

Since both countries are U.S. allies and share concerns over China’s maritime activity, the Philippines is extremely important to Japan, said Kenko Sone, spokesman at Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office.

Foreign Ministry officials said Monday that Abe and Aquino were also expected to expand their defense cooperation in other areas, including the transfer of Japanese military equipment and technology

to the Philippines, possibly related to maritime reconnaissance. Tokyo eased its self-imposed ban on military exports last year.

Under Abe’s push to expand Japan’s international defense role, Japan has been expanding its defense cooperation with a number of countries to complement its cornerstone alliance with the U.S. Manila has protested over China’s stepped-up reclamation work on Philippine-claimed islands and maneuvers against Filipino air patrols and fishermen. BUSINESS Dollar pressured after rally fizzles

TOKYO - The dollar was under pressure on Wednesday after more weak US data clouded the timeline for an interest rate hike, while the euro got a lift from hopes for a long-awaited Greek bailout deal.

The greenback slipped to 123.90 yen in Tokyo trading from 124.09 yen in US trading, and well off a more than 12-year high above 125 yen earlier Tuesday in Asia.

The euro ticked up to $1.1160 and 138.50 yen, against $1.1152 and 138.39 yen in New York, where the unit jumped on figures that showed rising inflation in the

eurozone.

The dollar took a hit from remarks Tuesday by US Fed governor Lael Brainard that a recent run of weak data casts doubt on the strength of the US economy, which clouds expectations for a rate hike later this year.

Fresh data Tuesday showed US factory orders in April fell by a

sharper-than-expected 0.4 percent, logging a decline in eight of the last nine months.

The euro benefited from speculation Greece is moving closer to an 11th hour deal with international creditors to avert a default.

“This was a classic squeeze on the US dollar across the board, and really led by euro,” said Raiko Shareef, a markets strategist at the Bank of New Zealand.

“There was an almost perfect storm of factors to give the US dollar a bit of a knock back,” he

said.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will meet European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker Wednesday for make-orbreak bailout talks, with a deadline looming for Athens to make a critical repayment.

Greece has until Friday to pay 300 million euros owed to the International Monetary Fund.

There are fears that Athens does not have the necessary funds and will default, possibly setting off a chain reaction that could end with a

messy exit from the eurozone.

“The euro clearly has the ability to lead the dollar higher or lower across the board, and really that vulnerability stems from very different potential outcomes you get from the negotiations between Greece and its creditors,” Shareef said.

The European Central Bank will hold a policy meeting later Wednesday.

‘African Davos’ to focus on continent’s upbeat economic future

CAPE TOWN - Growing optimism over Africa’s economic future is set to draw more than 1,250 delegates from governments and international corporations Wednesday to the threeday “African Davos” in Cape Town, the World Economic Forum said.

The offshoot of the annual WEF meeting in the Swiss resort of Davos, which brings public and private business leaders together, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an upbeat outlook as growth across Africa outstrips the global

average.

“The record levels of participation at this year’s gathering can be seen to reflect both an optimism in the economic prospects of the region and an unprecedented commitment... to pursue public-private cooperation,” the WEF said.

A report to be presented to the conference by international investment company JLL says Africa sits at the centre of many corporate growth strategies.

“Over the past decade and a

half alone, Africa’s economy has grown nearly three percentage points faster than global GDP,” the report notes.

“Fuelled by an influx of FDI (foreign direct investment), rapid urbanization and an emerging middle class, African countries, including Mozambique, Zambia and Ethiopia, are forecasted to grow at a faster rate than many other emerging economies.”

It points out that while mining, oil and gas remain a focus in Africa

for overseas investors, business services now top the FDI sector list, followed by manufacturing and sales, marketing and support industries.

Retail and construction also feature in the top 10 amid a surge in response to the demands from urbanization and consumer spending.

GIANYAR - Eight Indian puppeteers from Sri Ramajaneya Togalu Gombe Mela enthralled the 300-strong audience comprising students, teachers and Balinese puppeteers (Dalangs) with their dexterity in ‘Togalu Gombyeatta’ shadow puppet show from Karnataka, India, held at the Aula Utama of SMK Negeri 3 Sukawati School in Batubulan on 29 May 2015.

The shadow puppet performance at SMKN3 Sukawati was attended by the Head of the Department of Culture of Gianyar Regency, I Gusti Ngurah Wijana, Principal of SMKN3 Sukawati School, I Gusti Ngurah Serama Semadi & former Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dibia.

‘Togalu Gombeyatta’ is a unique traditional shadow puppet theatre from the State of Karnataka in South India, which can be traced back to thousands of years. In this ancient yet still living puppetry tradition, colourful figures marked on leather sheets made transparent in an age-old traditional technique making use of natural colours drawn from plants or stones are used. The puppeteers manipulate the figures behind a translucent screen and the shadows of the puppets reflect the coloured figures like dressed actors on the screen. Shadow puppet shows are popular among the people in the whole South Indian peninusula.

The Indian artistes performed the episode from Ramayana depicting Devi Sita’s abductions from Panchvati. The audience hugely appreciated the large-sized colourful puppets and their dexterous manipulation and the story-telling by way of songs and dialogues accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as Harmonium, Dholak (drum), Cymbals (convex bronze plates) and Gejje (tiny hollow metal bell).

The puppets used in the Togalu Gombeyatta performance were large-sized and transparent while the Balinese puppets tend to be small in size. However, both Balinese and Indian puppeteers apply similar manipulation techniques and hand joints and leg joints are almost the same in puppetry arts in both countries. The Togalu Gombeyatta puppets, being the shadow puppets, are used behind a screen while the local Indonesian puppets could be manipulated either behind or in front of the screen.

The Indian puppeteers conducted an immersive learn-by-doing Workshop on 30 May 2015 at the School focussing exclusively on the ancient lively art of Togalu Gombeyatta.

50 puppetry students of the School as well as from ISI Denpasar besides teachers of puppetry attended. The Balinese students and teachers enthusiastically learnt about designing, sculpture, architecture, drawing, crafting and painting of the Indian puppets and appreciated the opportunity to experience the show and the art from India. The Indian puppeteers plan to experiment new designs and sculptures from Indonesian puppetry in their performances.

Sri Ramajanya Togalu Gombe Mela troupe, under the leadership of Belagallu Veeranna, has performed extensively across India not only featuring episodes from Ramayana and Mahabharata epics but also performed shows aimed at social objectives such as literacy and public health, in particularly family planning and the eradication of AIDS and Leprosy, Indian freedom strugg l e (Bharat Swatantrata Sangram), Saksharta Andolan (literacy movement) and Bapu (as Mahatma Gandhi is called a ff e c t i o n a t e l y ) i n t h e To g a l u Gombeyatta format, winning the national stature and number of honors for their work.

During his opening remarks, the Consul General of India in Bali, Amarjeet Singh Takhi, thanked the art School for hosting the performance, while emphasizing that these eminent puppeteers from India have nurtured and popularized the traditional art of shadow puppetry not only in India but abroad as well. He elaborated that the Indonesian puppetry has been influenced by various puppetry art forms in India. Currently one of the professors of puppetry at ISI Denpasar is doing research in India for last six months, which will help both countries to learn from each other’s art and techniques for better preservation and propagation of this ancient art format.

He also informed the audience of the plans for marking the International Day of Yoga on June 21 2015 at Lapangan Puputan Margarana, opposite Bali Governor’s office from 6 am onwards and invited all students and their family and friends to participate in the celebrations to bring about harmony and peace in the world.

Rich states can’t meet 2020 climate aid goal alone

WASHINGTON — Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee plans to formally open his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination on Wednesday, setting off on a quixotic political quest that has left even some of his closest allies scratching their heads.

BARCELONA - An international commitment to provide $100 billion a year by 2020 to help vulnerable countries tackle climate change is unlikely to be met if only government funding from rich nations is counted towards it, researchers said.

At U.N. climate negotiations, some developing countries have argued the annual $100 billion should come entirely from developed nations’ treasuries, even though the original promise called for funding from a range of sources.

Climate finance from wealthy states’ coffers alone would not hit the target unless it grew at 25 percent each year from 2012, the World Resources Institute (WRI) said in a paper.

“It’s not an impossibility if there is enough ambition but there’s nothing in the recent past that would indicate we could grow at those rates,” said WRI finance expert Michael Westphal, lead author of the paper outlining scenarios to get to $100 billion.

The researchers suggested a combination of climate finance sources could be counted towards the goal, including support from multilateral development banks, private-sector investment mobilised by public money, and development aid relating to climate change.

If that were to happen, climate finance could total $109 billon to $155 billion in 2020 under projections of low to medium increases across all the sources, the paper said.

Westphal said progress should be made this year on defining how to reach the annual $100 billion, ideally with a formal decision at December’s U.N. conference in Paris, where leaders are due to agree a new global deal to tackle climate change.

When the non-binding climate finance commitment was made in Copenhagen in 2009, the accord said the $100 billion would come from “a wide variety of sources, public and private, bilateral and multilateral, including alternative sources of finance”.

Since then, little headway has been made on clarifying what can be counted towards the goal and deciding how to achieve it.

To agree on this, “countries will have to find a middle ground”, said the WRI paper, released during June 1-11 climate negotiations in Bonn. (rtr)

Chafee, a former Republican turned independent who joined the Democratic Party two years ago, surprised many when he announced plans to explore a presidential run in April. Since then, he’s made little effort to set up a competitive campaign operation, beyond a few visits and calls to activists in the early voting states of New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina.

BANGKOK — A senior Thai army officer has turned himself in over his alleged involvement in a human trafficking scandal, marking the first arrest of a military official since the investigation started last month.

Lt. Gen. Manas Kongpaen, a senior adviser to the Royal Thai Army, is facing multiple charges, including human trafficking, detention and ransom.

More than 50 people, including several local politicians and officials, were arrested after the discovery of dozens of bodies believed to be those of Myanmar’s Rohingya migrants at the abandoned trafficking camps near the Thai-Malaysian border.

National police chief Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung said Wednesday that Manas denied the charges.

Before Manas’ arrest warrant was issued this week, the army chief had denied the military’s involvement in the trafficking syndicates. (ap)

Chafee to unveil presidential run, puzzling longtime allies primary bid. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who entered the race last week, has said he’s already raised at least $4 million. And allies of former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley have established a super political action committee to support his bid.

All three have begun building robust campaign operations with staff across the country, a step Chafee has yet to take.

In previous campaigns, Chafee has spent significant sums from his family fortune to further his political ambitious, for example, dropping $1.8 million on his 2010 gubernatorial bid. But running for president is significantly more expensive than seeking statewide office.

Chafee also faces questions about his rationale for challenging Clinton.

Though most of the Democratic field has focused on pocketbook issues, calculating that the falling unemployment rate masks a lingering feeling of economic insecurity, Chafee says he’s “alarmed” by international instability,

particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.

His opposition to Clinton, Chafee has said, is driven by the belief that the next president should not be someone who supported the war in Iraq, which he calls “one of the worst decisions in United States history.” Then a Republican, Chafee was the lone Republican senator to vote in 2002 against authorizing military action against Iraq.

Clinton, then a New York senator, voted to authorize the war, which became a major issue during her 2008 campaign. Clinton now opposes putting American soldiers on the ground in Iraq, other than as advisers to the Iraqi forces.

Chafee left the Republican Party in 2007 to become an independent and supported President Barack Obama in both his campaigns. After winning election as governor, Chafee became a Democrat in 2013, but he opted against seeking re-election amid low approval ratings. (ap)

INDONESIA Pulp and paper giant stops cutting Indonesia’s rainforests

JAKARTA - One of Asia’s biggest pulp and paper firms said on Wednesday it would stop sourcing from natural forests four years earlier than planned, in an effort to reduce deforestation and protect peatlands, a move cautiously welcomed by green groups.

Unlisted Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) brought forward a previous commitment to only use supplies from its own plantations by 2019, and will now work with green groups to avoid developing forested peatland, expand conservation areas and resolve social conflicts on its land.

“This is a major step in our 15-year sustainability journey,” said APRIL President Praveen Singhavi.

APRIL and other palm, pulp and paper firms have been criticised for not doing enough to stop deforestation and destruction of carbon-rich peatlands in Indonesia.

APRIL owns plantations covering around 480,000 hectares and has now conserved about 320,000 hectares of natural forest area in Indonesia.

“This strengthened commitment by APRIL is an encouraging step along the pathway towards responsible and sustainable production,” said WWF

Indonesia’s Aditya Bayunanda.

Indonesia, home to the world’s third-largest tropical forests, has surpassed Brazil in clearing tropical forests with losses accelerating despite a 2011 moratorium meant to protect wildlife and combat climate change.

APRIL is part of the PT Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) group, which will also implement sustainability policies, said company director Anderson Tanoto.

JAKARTA - A boat with more than 700 migrants being escorted by Myanmar’s navy towards its western state of Rakhine is expected to reach land Wednesday, according to a senior US official who demanded they be treated “humanely”.

Myanmar authorities have said the 727 passengers onboard the vessel, found adrift in the Bay of Bengal last Friday, were “Bengalis” and have threatened to send them across the border to Bangladesh.

Myanmar describes its persecuted Rohingya Muslim community, numbering around 1.3 million, as “Bengalis”. Most have no citizenship and are considered to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Around 3,500 migrants, mainly Rohingya from Myanmar or economic migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh, have come ashore in Southeast Asia in recent weeks in an ongoing migrant crisis.

The UNHCR estimated Wednesday around 2,000 more are still trapped at sea, heaping pressure on both countries to take back the migrants and improve living conditions to stem the outflow.

US Assistant Secretary of State Anne Richard, who visited camps housing Rohingya refugees in western Indonesia in recent days, confirmed this latest boat was expected to arrive Wednesday.

“The Burmese (Myanmar) authorities would be then responsible for what happens to people on that boat,” she told reporters in Jakarta.

“My understanding is that if they are from Bangladesh, there will be a

quick arrangement with the government of Bangladesh to return their citizens to them.”

She added: “We are following this very closely because we want to make sure any of the innocent people on the boat get proper treatment and are handled humanely.”

She reiterated the US wanted the Rohingya treated as citizens of Myanmar, and would continue pressuring the government in Naypyidaw as it continues its transition to democracy and prepares for elections later this year.

The plight of the Muslim group has come under scrutiny as the migrant crisis has unfurled across in Southeast Asia, after a Thai crackdown on people smuggling threw the multimillion dollar industry into disarray, leading gangmasters to abandon their victims on land and at sea.

US President Barack Obama has recently joined calls urging Myanmar to end discrimination against the Rohingya minority.

When pressed on whether the US would impose sanctions should Myanmar fail to treat the minority population humanely, Richard said they remained an option but were not being actively considered at this stage.

“In the diplomatic toolbox, sanctions is one of the options,” she said.

The Rohingya flee Rakhine in droves each year to escape poverty and persecution in a region where their movements are controlled and they lack access to jobs or basic services. (afp)

Humanity Tragedy Monument

KUTA - This monument was built to remind us of a terrible incident, namely the bomb blast in Kuta Bali on Saturday night October 12, 2002 on Jalan Legian Kuta. It caused death toll as many as 202 people from 22 countries and 324 people suffered from serious injuries and wounds.

Such very powerful bomb blast

also caused damage to buildings and vehicles within a radius of one kilometer.

Since the tragedy, tourism industry as the backbone of Bali’s economy suffered the most serious slump in the history, but thanks to the persistence of the whole society and gov-

ernment, now slowly but surely it has now undergone at restoration.

The monument itself was established in the former area of explosion

(Ground Zero). Most prominent part of the monument is Kayonan with a large white wooden leaf symbolizing the universe and its contents. At the bottom of this kayonan, there are inscription of `victims’ name list that died in the incident and their nationality.

Warriors will rely on versatility, depth to defend LeBron

OAKLAND — LeBron James believes there is nobody in the world that can stop him. He is too strong, too fast, too skilled.

For the Golden State Warriors to win the NBA title, they will need to get past James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the finals starting Thursday night. And not just once — but four times in seven games.

“Some have been successful.

Many have failed,” said Warriors forward Draymond Green, the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year and among at least four players who will get their shot at James in the series.

Defending the four-time Most Valuable Player is a challenge the Warriors think they are as wellequipped as anybody to face.

They had the top-rated defense during the regular season and held opponents to a league-low 42.8 percent shooting. They are loaded with length and versatility on the perimeter, and they lean on 7-footer Andrew Bogut to back them up around the basket.

Call it the Irresistible Force Paradox: an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. Someone, or something, will surely have to give in this matchup.

“Our defense is the best in the league, but we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Bogut said.

James had little trouble slicing through Golden State’s smothering pressure in the lone game he played against the Warriors this season. He scored a season-high 42 points in the Cavs’ 110-99 win in Cleveland on Feb. 26, shot 15 of 25 from the floor and made 8 of 11 free throws.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr called it “one of those games where he was making everything.” He said the key to avoiding a repeat performance is clogging the paint and avoiding turnovers that lead to transition baskets.

“Sometimes your best defense is your offense,” Kerr said. “You can’t get crazy with the ball. A live-ball turnover with LeBron is just a dunk at the other end.”

James, who is in his fifth straight finals, has been brilliant in the playoffs. He averaged 27.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game while shooting 42.8 percent against Boston, Chicago and Atlanta and often looked flawless.

The Warriors have been tightlipped about how they’ll go about defending James. But, like anybody, they believe there are ways to disrupt his rhythm.

“We’re all human, I would like to think,” said Warriors swingman Andre Iguodala, who spent more time defending James than any other player on the team in the previous matchup, according to the SportVU tracking system. The Warriors are no strangers to stopping stars in these playoffs.

James will be the fourth straight All-NBA First-Team player they face after Houston’s James Harden, Memphis’ Marc Gasol and New Orleans’ Anthony Davis. The fifth member of that team is newly minted MVP Stephen Curry, whom James compared himself to last week when asked how to defend

the Warriors point guard. “The same way you slow me down,” he said, pausing for effect. “You can’t.”

The Warriors will likely do what they did against each team’s best player the previous three rounds: mix and match defenders and defensive looks.

Green, Iguodala, Harrison Barnes and Klay Thompson will take turns guarding James. And because the Warriors switch on pick-and-rolls at just about every position, it’s not nearly as important who starts on him as it is who finishes.

Kerr and assistant coach Ron Adams, the de facto defensive co-

ordinator, will likely shift schemes — such as going under screens and over screens, trapping or backing off — several times each game to give James different looks.

James, in his 12th year in the league, has seen just about everything. He said it’s always a luxury for a team to have a variety of defensive players, and the Warriors are no different in that regard.

“They have multiple bodies that they can kind of put on me,” James said, “but it doesn’t affect what I need to do.” The Warriors also want to limit the opportunities James cre-

ates for his teammates.

The number of assists he has might be just as important as how many points he scores. Collapsing around him and leaving another player open for a 3-pointer can be costly, which is why the Warriors are looking at the defensive plan as a “team challenge.”

“It’s not one person’s job to stop LeBron,” Green said. “If we’re going to send any one person on our team to stop LeBron, we’ll probably lose. It’ll be a complete team effort.

Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka looks dejected during the quarter final

PARIS - The signs that things were going horribly wrong for Roger Federer were laid bare at Roland Garros on Tuesday when the Swiss’s racket flew out of his grasp after he tripped up and fell to his hands and knees on the red clay.

It is not the graceful manoeuvre one has come to expect from a 17times grand slam champion who has charmed the world with his wondrous shots rather than clumsy falls.

But that is what Stan Wawrinka reduced his compatriot to on Tuesday -- a fallen champion.

The eighth seed played what he called his “best match in a grand slam” to trump Federer at a major for the first time with a 6-4 6-3 7-6(4) quarter-final victory.

So demoralising was the loss for Federer, who was tipped to reach the final from the half of the

draw that did not feature the other members of the Big Four -- Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal or Andy Murray -- that his usually sharp memory also failed him.

“I made 30 something errors today. He maybe made one maybe,” said the 2009 champion.

Wawrinka actually produced two more unforced errors than Federer’s 26 but it was the winners flying off his racket that caused the real damage -- 43 to 28 from the second seed.

Forever in the shadow of his more celebrated compatriot, Wawrinka channelled all his nervous energy to finally get the better of Federer at a major on his fifth attempt to set up a semi-final date with home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

“I was always really, really nervous when I played Roger,

especially in a big moment like a quarter-final of a grand slam,” the 2014 Australian Open champion said after notching up his third win in 19 meetings with Federer.

“I wasn’t really feeling good this morning and before the match but I also knew that’s when I play my best game.” Federer’s normally smooth rhythm lost all of its usual precision as gusting winds tore through Court Suzanne Lenglen.

He was broken in the third game of the first set, then in the seventh game of the second and when a couple of close calls went against him in the third set tiebreak, his hopes of holding aloft the Musketeers’ Cup for a second time were over.

Blatter’s 17-year rule in soccer marked by growth, scandal

GENEVA — Sepp Blatter governed the biggest sport on Earth for nearly two decades, for years untouched personally by allegations of corruption, but never sharing the game’s popularity.

He joked about his “Dr. Evil” image, like a James Bond villain manipulating soccer from his Swiss headquarters and never responding to public outcry. He surrounded himself with loyal lieutenants, many of whom he raised from obscurity to lead powerful national and regional federations. He put them in control of billions of dollars for TV contracts, endorsements of national teams and where the biggest tournaments were held.

Even over the last few years, as many of those deputies were torched by scandal, he replaced them without making huge changes and took credit for helping clean up the game.

After 17 years in charge and bringing the game’s marquee events to new heights, the pressure became too much. The world’s largest soccer nations were in open rebellion and discussing an alternate tournament to the World Cup. Sponsors from the world’s most-popular soft drink to best-selling video game questioned their ties to FIFA. At a hastily arranged announcement Tuesday, Blatter said he plans to resign and admitted he had lost too much support to remain in office.

But even on his way out, he didn’t take responsibility for the problems under his watch. He declared he was now free from constraints and could clean up the game the way he has wanted to, seemingly tone deaf to the idea that that might sound insincere.

As FIFA thrived through allegations of bribery, vote-buying and World Cup ticket scams, the 79-year-old Blatter built a base of support by bolstering the sport in developing countries and brought the first World Cup to Africa.

On May 27, U.S. prosecutors issued indictments against 14 current or former soccer officials — including seven arrested in raids at a luxury Zurich hotel. The Swiss also opened a criminal investigation into the votes awarding the World Cup tournaments to Russia in 2018 and to Qatar in 2022.

Even though he was not implicated in those investigations, Blatter faced calls for his resignation that

came from some of his harshest critics in the game as well as from political leaders.

His re-election to a fifth, fouryear term Friday was a reflection of the support he enjoyed by giving each of FIFA’s 209 member federations a basic yearly sum of $250,000, plus bonuses and project funds from World Cup profits.

FIFA’s revenue was about $560 million in 1998 when Blatter took over and $5.7 billion last year, boosted by huge increases in media and marketing rights sales. FIFA had 137 members in 1970 and 190 when Blatter succeeded Joao Havelange, and 19 have been added — for the most part small nations that lack economic might and soccer pedigree.

Blatter used the revenue to build soccer in underdeveloped parts of the world — and boost support for himself. FIFA’s website says the organization has given nearly $11.9 billion in financial assistance, and has helped fund 698 projects under its Goal Programme and 3,844 technical activities.

Even when scandals tainted FIFA’s prestige and image, most of the officials stuck by Blatter, particularly from small nations in Africa and Asia.

Since 2010, executive committee members Amos Adamu (Nigeria), Chuck Blazer (United States), Vernon Manilal Fernando (Sri Lanka), Mohammed bin Hammam (Qatar), Reynald Temarii (Tahiti) and Jack Warner (Trinidad and Tobago) were suspended. Nicolas Leoz (Paraguay) and Ricardo Teixeira (Brazil) quit following corruption allegations.

Current executive committee member Jeffrey Webb (Cayman Islands) and expiring member Eugenio Figueredo (Uruguay) were suspended last week along with executive committee member-elect Eduardo Li (Costa Rica) after they were indicted in the U.S. on racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering charges along with Warner and Leoz. Blazer pled guilty to 10 counts.

Blatter defended his reign during a 2013 speech at the Oxford Union in Britain.

“Perhaps you think I am a ruthless parasite sucking the lifeblood out of the world and out of football — the godfather of the FIFA gravy train,” he said.

“There are those who will tell you that FIFA is just a conspiracy, a scam, accountable to nobody and too powerful for anyone to resist,” he went on. “There are those who will tell you of the supposed sordid secrets that lie deep in our Bond villain headquarters in the hills above Zurich ... where we apparently plot to exploit the unfortunate and the weak. They would have you believe that I sit in my office with a sinister grin, gently stroking the chin of an expensive, white Persian cat.”

“It is strange how fantasy easily becomes confused with fact,” he said.

Blatter mastered the politics of international soccer and reveled in the media attention. He mixed easily with heads of state lured by the commercial and popular power of the World Cup. But there also were times that some of Blatter’s remarks made him seem out of touch.

Five years ago, Blatter said gay visitors to the 2022 World Cup should “refrain from any sexual activities” while in Qatar because of the Gulf nation’s strict laws against homosexuality. He later apologized. (ap)

Venezuela’s Maduro suggests Maradona as FIFA president CARACAS- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday suggested that Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona become the next FIFA president, hours after a deepening soccer scandal spurred the resignation of the group’s top official.

Sepp Blatter stepped down as FIFA president less than a week after charges by U.S. prosecutors linked nine soccer officials and five sports media and promotions executives to more than $150 million in bribes.

“The president of the international football federation should be Diego Armando Maradona or someone like him,” said Maduro during his weekly televised address. “Diego Armando Maradona has been denouncing FIFA

for decades, they’ve threatened him and they’ve laughed at him.”

Maradona, who led Argentina to a 1986 World Cup victory, has said he has been “enjoying” the scandal.

He has been openly critical of Blatter and in the last elections voiced support for Blatter’s rival, Jordanian Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein.

A lifelong supporter of leftist causes, Maradona was a close friend of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez and has maintained warm relations with Maduro who was elected after Chavez’s 2013 death from cancer.

One of the FIFA officials arrested during last week’s police operation in Switzerland was

Rafael Esquivel, who is also head of the Venezuelan Football Federation.

“The state prosecutor’s office has ordered a full investigation of the Venezuelan Football Federation,” Maduro said. “I, as head of state, support it entirely.”

Maduro criticized U.S. authorities for operating beyond their jurisdictions, and suggested the investigation was part of a U.S. plot to scrap World Cup tournaments in ideological allies Russia and Qatar.

“They are getting Blatter out of the way so that they can govern FIFA,” he said. “The maneuver is meant to see how they can take the World Cup away from Russia and Qatar or to sabotage them so that they cannot shine.” (rtr)

Former Brazil international Zico has expressed a desire to run for president of FIFA following Sepp Blatter’s shock resignation on Tuesday.

Blatter rocked the world of soccer by unexpectedly saying he would step down as FIFA president in the wake of a corruption investigation that reportedly may include the embattled chief himself.

The 62-year-old Zico, who played in three World Cups, served as Brazil’s sports minister

in the 1990s and has decades of experience at all levels of the game including management stints in Japan, Turkey, Russia, Greece and the Middle East.

“Why not?” he asked in a Facebook post from Berlin where he attend Saturday’s Champions League Final.

“My life has always been in football. It’s a passion I served with seriousness and respect in Brazil and other countries.”

“I was Sports Minister, I have experience with my club and in

helping Kashima in Japan. I put football above politics.”

Zico, who led Flamengo to the Intercontinental Cup in 1981 and was a member of the Brazil side at the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cup, admitted he had no backing to support a presidency bid as yet but would see how the idea developed.

“I don’t have any support yet but if it’s opened up then I can run (for president) of FIFA. It’s just an idea for now ... But who knows?” (ap)

Panathinaikos signs Essien on 2-year contract

ATHENS — Panathinaikos says it has signed AC Milan midfielder Michael Essien on a two-year contract with the Greek club.

AMSTERDAM - Robin van Persie is keeping his options open over his future at Manchester United as he enters a final season of his contract with the club, Dutch media reported on Wednesday.

The striker returned from injury towards the end of the season but was no longer able to command a regular place in the team.

“The club must do its homework and so must I. It’s a new situation,” he told reporters in an interview with several Dutch newspapers ahead of Friday’s friendly international between the Netherlands and the U.S. in Amsterdam.

“I’m going to calmly and relaxed sit down and consider everything.

“I still have ambitions of playing every week. I feel top fit and I think I can still go on for several years. Take note of my words,” said the 31-year-old, who moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in 2012. Van Persie said he should have had six or seven more goals than the tally of 10 he netted for the club last season.

“People don’t accept that I

just scored 10. Actually that’s a compliment because they expect more of me on the basis of what I can do. I was the club’s second highest goal scorer together with Juan Mata and behind Wayne Rooney (14 goals).

Venezuela’s Maduro suggests Maradona as FIFA president CARACAS- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday suggested that Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona become the next FIFA president, hours after a deepening soccer scandal spurred the resignation of the group’s top official.

Sepp Blatter stepped down as FIFA president less than a week after charges by U.S. prosecutors linked nine soccer officials and five sports media and promotions executives to more than $150 million in bribes.

“The president of the international football federation should be Diego Armando Maradona or someone like him,” said Maduro during his weekly televised address. “Diego Armando Maradona has been denouncing FIFA

for decades, they’ve threatened him and they’ve laughed at him.”

Maradona, who led Argentina to a 1986 World Cup victory, has said he has been “enjoying” the scandal.

He has been openly critical of Blatter and in the last elections voiced support for Blatter’s rival, Jordanian Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein.

A lifelong supporter of leftist causes, Maradona was a close friend of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez and has maintained warm relations with Maduro who was elected after Chavez’s 2013 death from cancer.

One of the FIFA officials arrested during last week’s police operation in Switzerland was

Rafael Esquivel, who is also head of the Venezuelan Football Federation.

“The state prosecutor’s office has ordered a full investigation of the Venezuelan Football Federation,” Maduro said. “I, as head of state, support it entirely.”

Maduro criticized U.S. authorities for operating beyond their jurisdictions, and suggested the investigation was part of a U.S. plot to scrap World Cup tournaments in ideological allies Russia and Qatar.

“They are getting Blatter out of the way so that they can govern FIFA,” he said. “The maneuver is meant to see how they can take the World Cup away from Russia and Qatar or to sabotage them so that they cannot shine.” (rtr)

Former Brazil international Zico has expressed a desire to run for president of FIFA following Sepp Blatter’s shock resignation on Tuesday.

Blatter rocked the world of soccer by unexpectedly saying he would step down as FIFA president in the wake of a corruption investigation that reportedly may include the embattled chief himself.

The 62-year-old Zico, who played in three World Cups, served as Brazil’s sports minister

in the 1990s and has decades of experience at all levels of the game including management stints in Japan, Turkey, Russia, Greece and the Middle East.

“Why not?” he asked in a Facebook post from Berlin where he attend Saturday’s Champions League Final.

“My life has always been in football. It’s a passion I served with seriousness and respect in Brazil and other countries.”

“I was Sports Minister, I have experience with my club and in

helping Kashima in Japan. I put football above politics.”

Zico, who led Flamengo to the Intercontinental Cup in 1981 and was a member of the Brazil side at the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cup, admitted he had no backing to support a presidency bid as yet but would see how the idea developed.

“I don’t have any support yet but if it’s opened up then I can run (for president) of FIFA. It’s just an idea for now ... But who knows?” (ap)

AMSTERDAM - Robin van Persie is keeping his options open over his future at Manchester United as he enters a final season of his contract with the club, Dutch media reported on Wednesday.

The striker returned from injury towards the end of the season but was no longer able to command a regular place in the team.

“The club must do its homework and so must I. It’s a new situation,” he told reporters in an interview with several Dutch newspapers ahead of Friday’s friendly international between the Netherlands and the U.S. in Amsterdam.

“I’m going to calmly and relaxed sit down and consider everything.

“I still have ambitions of playing every week. I feel top fit and I think I can still go on for several years. Take note of my words,” said the 31-year-old, who moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in 2012. Van Persie said he should have had six or seven more goals than the tally of 10 he netted for the club last season.

“People don’t accept that I

just scored 10. Actually that’s a compliment because they expect more of me on the basis of what I can do. I was the club’s second highest goal scorer together with Juan Mata and behind Wayne Rooney (14 goals).

“It’s not good that a top club like Manchester United does not have a scorer with 20 or more goals behind his name each season and that is why we only finished fourth.”

Van Persie struggled with an ankle injury through the season, blaming a hectic pre-World Cup training programme, as he battled to get fit for Brazil, and then a lack of a break after the tournament last summer.

“After I came back from injury I realised that I would not automatically get back in the starting line-up,” he said. “But I didn’t have a problem with that because they were playing well at the time.

“These things happen. We are living in an adult world.

KUTA - This monument was built to remind us of a terrible incident, namely the bomb blast in Kuta Bali on Saturday night October 12, 2002 on Jalan Legian Kuta. It caused death toll as many as 202 people from 22 countries and 324 people suffered from serious injuries and wounds.

also caused damage to buildings and vehicles within a radius of one kilometer.

Since the tragedy, tourism industry as the backbone of Bali’s economy suffered the most serious slump in the history, but thanks to the persistence of the whole society and gov-

ernment, now slowly but surely it has now undergone at restoration.

The monument itself was established in the former area of explosion

(Ground Zero). Most prominent part of the monument is Kayonan with a large white wooden leaf symbolizing the universe and its contents. At the bottom of this kayonan, there are inscription of `victims’ name list that died in the incident and their nationality.

Warriors will rely on versatility, depth to defend LeBron

OAKLAND — LeBron James believes there is nobody in the world that can stop him. He is too strong, too fast, too skilled.

For the Golden State Warriors to win the NBA title, they will need to get past James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the finals starting Thursday night. And not just once — but four times in seven games.

“Some have been successful.

Many have failed,” said Warriors forward Draymond Green, the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year and among at least four players who will get their shot at James in the series.

Defending the four-time Most Valuable Player is a challenge the Warriors think they are as wellequipped as anybody to face.

They had the top-rated defense during the regular season and held opponents to a league-low 42.8 percent shooting. They are loaded with length and versatility on the perimeter, and they lean on 7-footer Andrew Bogut to back them up around the basket.

Call it the Irresistible Force Paradox: an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. Someone, or something, will surely have to give in this matchup.

“Our defense is the best in the league, but we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Bogut said.

James had little trouble slicing through Golden State’s smothering pressure in the lone game he played against the Warriors this season. He scored a season-high 42 points in the Cavs’ 110-99 win in Cleveland on Feb. 26, shot 15 of 25 from the floor and made 8 of 11 free throws.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr called it “one of those games where he was making everything.” He said the key to avoiding a repeat performance is clogging the paint and avoiding turnovers that lead to transition baskets.

“Sometimes your best defense is your offense,” Kerr said. “You can’t get crazy with the ball. A live-ball turnover with LeBron is just a dunk at the other end.”

James, who is in his fifth straight finals, has been brilliant in the playoffs. He averaged 27.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game while shooting 42.8 percent against Boston, Chicago and Atlanta and often looked flawless.

The Warriors have been tightlipped about how they’ll go about defending James. But, like anybody, they believe there are ways to disrupt his rhythm.

“We’re all human, I would like to think,” said Warriors swingman Andre Iguodala, who spent more time defending James than any other player on the team in the previous matchup, according to the SportVU tracking system. The Warriors are no strangers to stopping stars in these playoffs.

James will be the fourth straight All-NBA First-Team player they face after Houston’s James Harden, Memphis’ Marc Gasol and New Orleans’ Anthony Davis. The fifth member of that team is newly minted MVP Stephen Curry, whom James compared himself to last week when asked how to defend

the Warriors point guard. “The same way you slow me down,” he said, pausing for effect. “You can’t.”

The Warriors will likely do what they did against each team’s best player the previous three rounds: mix and match defenders and defensive looks.

Green, Iguodala, Harrison Barnes and Klay Thompson will take turns guarding James. And because the Warriors switch on pick-and-rolls at just about every position, it’s not nearly as important who starts on him as it is who finishes.

Kerr and assistant coach Ron Adams, the de facto defensive co-

ordinator, will likely shift schemes — such as going under screens and over screens, trapping or backing off — several times each game to give James different looks.

James, in his 12th year in the league, has seen just about everything. He said it’s always a luxury for a team to have a variety of defensive players, and the Warriors are no different in that regard.

“They have multiple bodies that they can kind of put on me,” James said, “but it doesn’t affect what I need to do.” The Warriors also want to limit the opportunities James cre-

ates for his teammates.

The number of assists he has might be just as important as how many points he scores. Collapsing around him and leaving another player open for a 3-pointer can be costly, which is why the Warriors are looking at the defensive plan as a “team challenge.”

“It’s not one person’s job to stop LeBron,” Green said. “If we’re going to send any one person on our team to stop LeBron, we’ll probably lose. It’ll be a complete team effort.

And as long as we approach it that way, I think we can do it.” (ap)

Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka looks dejected during the quarter final

PARIS - The signs that things were going horribly wrong for Roger Federer were laid bare at Roland Garros on Tuesday when the Swiss’s racket flew out of his grasp after he tripped up and fell to his hands and knees on the red clay.

It is not the graceful manoeuvre one has come to expect from a 17times grand slam champion who has charmed the world with his wondrous shots rather than clumsy falls.

But that is what Stan Wawrinka reduced his compatriot to on Tuesday -- a fallen champion.

The eighth seed played what he called his “best match in a grand slam” to trump Federer at a major for the first time with a 6-4 6-3 7-6(4) quarter-final victory.

So demoralising was the loss for Federer, who was tipped to reach the final from the half of the

draw that did not feature the other members of the Big Four -- Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal or Andy Murray -- that his usually sharp memory also failed him.

“I made 30 something errors today. He maybe made one maybe,” said the 2009 champion.

Wawrinka actually produced two more unforced errors than Federer’s 26 but it was the winners flying off his racket that caused the real damage -- 43 to 28 from the second seed.

Forever in the shadow of his more celebrated compatriot, Wawrinka channelled all his nervous energy to finally get the better of Federer at a major on his fifth attempt to set up a semi-final date with home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

“I was always really, really nervous when I played Roger,

especially in a big moment like a quarter-final of a grand slam,” the 2014 Australian Open champion said after notching up his third win in 19 meetings with Federer.

“I wasn’t really feeling good this morning and before the match but I also knew that’s when I play my best game.” Federer’s normally smooth rhythm lost all of its usual precision as gusting winds tore through Court Suzanne Lenglen.

He was broken in the third game of the first set, then in the seventh game of the second and when a couple of close calls went against him in the third set tiebreak, his hopes of holding aloft the Musketeers’ Cup for a second time were over.

Rich states can’t meet 2020 climate aid goal alone

WASHINGTON — Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee plans to formally open his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination on Wednesday, setting off on a quixotic political quest that has left even some of his closest allies scratching their heads.

BARCELONA - An international commitment to provide $100 billion a year by 2020 to help vulnerable countries tackle climate change is unlikely to be met if only government funding from rich nations is counted towards it, researchers said.

At U.N. climate negotiations, some developing countries have argued the annual $100 billion should come entirely from developed nations’ treasuries, even though the original promise called for funding from a range of sources.

Climate finance from wealthy states’ coffers alone would not hit the target unless it grew at 25 percent each year from 2012, the World Resources Institute (WRI) said in a paper.

“It’s not an impossibility if there is enough ambition but there’s nothing in the recent past that would indicate we could grow at those rates,” said WRI finance expert Michael Westphal, lead author of the paper outlining scenarios to get to $100 billion.

The researchers suggested a combination of climate finance sources could be counted towards the goal, including support from multilateral development banks, private-sector investment mobilised by public money, and development aid relating to climate change.

If that were to happen, climate finance could total $109 billon to $155 billion in 2020 under projections of low to medium increases across all the sources, the paper said.

Westphal said progress should be made this year on defining how to reach the annual $100 billion, ideally with a formal decision at December’s U.N. conference in Paris, where leaders are due to agree a new global deal to tackle climate change.

When the non-binding climate finance commitment was made in Copenhagen in 2009, the accord said the $100 billion would come from “a wide variety of sources, public and private, bilateral and multilateral, including alternative sources of finance”.

Since then, little headway has been made on clarifying what can be counted towards the goal and deciding how to achieve it.

To agree on this, “countries will have to find a middle ground”, said the WRI paper, released during June 1-11 climate negotiations in Bonn. (rtr)

Chafee, a former Republican turned independent who joined the Democratic Party two years ago, surprised many when he announced plans to explore a presidential run in April. Since then, he’s made little effort to set up a competitive campaign operation, beyond a few visits and calls to activists in the early voting states of New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina.

While his primary competitors travel the country raising money and wooing supporters, longtime Chafee strategists and donors say they know little about his intentions — or even his rationale for running.

“He’s not done anything other than posture on some issues,” said Mike Trainor, a former Chafee aide. “The question he’s going to have to answer is what credible indications can he give that he is at all ready to run a national campaign.”

BANGKOK — A senior Thai army officer has turned himself in over his alleged involvement in a human trafficking scandal, marking the first arrest of a military official since the investigation started last month.

Lt. Gen. Manas Kongpaen, a senior adviser to the Royal Thai Army, is facing multiple charges, including human trafficking, detention and ransom.

More than 50 people, including several local politicians and officials, were arrested after the discovery of dozens of bodies believed to be those of Myanmar’s Rohingya migrants at the abandoned trafficking camps near the Thai-Malaysian border.

National police chief Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung said Wednesday that Manas denied the charges.

Before Manas’ arrest warrant was issued this week, the army chief had denied the military’s involvement in the trafficking syndicates. (ap)

Chafee to unveil presidential run, puzzling longtime allies primary bid. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who entered the race last week, has said he’s already raised at least $4 million. And allies of former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley have established a super political action committee to support his bid.

All three have begun building robust campaign operations with staff across the country, a step Chafee has yet to take.

In previous campaigns, Chafee has spent significant sums from his family fortune to further his political ambitious, for example, dropping $1.8 million on his 2010 gubernatorial bid. But running for president is significantly more expensive than seeking statewide office.

Chafee also faces questions about his rationale for challenging Clinton.

Though most of the Democratic field has focused on pocketbook issues, calculating that the falling unemployment rate masks a lingering feeling of economic insecurity, Chafee says he’s “alarmed” by international instability,

particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.

His opposition to Clinton, Chafee has said, is driven by the belief that the next president should not be someone who supported the war in Iraq, which he calls “one of the worst decisions in United States history.” Then a Republican, Chafee was the lone Republican senator to vote in 2002 against authorizing military action against Iraq.

Clinton, then a New York senator, voted to authorize the war, which became a major issue during her 2008 campaign. Clinton now opposes putting American soldiers on the ground in Iraq, other than as advisers to the Iraqi forces.

Chafee left the Republican Party in 2007 to become an independent and supported President Barack Obama in both his campaigns. After winning election as governor, Chafee became a Democrat in 2013, but he opted against seeking re-election amid low approval ratings. (ap)

INDONESIA Pulp and paper giant stops cutting Indonesia’s rainforests

JAKARTA - One of Asia’s biggest pulp and paper firms said on Wednesday it would stop sourcing from natural forests four years earlier than planned, in an effort to reduce deforestation and protect peatlands, a move cautiously welcomed by green groups.

Unlisted Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) brought forward a previous commitment to only use supplies from its own plantations by 2019, and will now work with green groups to avoid developing forested peatland, expand conservation areas and resolve social conflicts on its land.

“This is a major step in our 15-year sustainability journey,” said APRIL President Praveen Singhavi.

APRIL and other palm, pulp and paper firms have been criticised for not doing enough to stop deforestation and destruction of carbon-rich peatlands in Indonesia.

APRIL owns plantations covering around 480,000 hectares and has now conserved about 320,000 hectares of natural forest area in Indonesia.

“This strengthened commitment by APRIL is an encouraging step along the pathway towards responsible and sustainable production,” said WWF

Indonesia’s Aditya Bayunanda.

Indonesia, home to the world’s third-largest tropical forests, has surpassed Brazil in clearing tropical forests with losses accelerating despite a 2011 moratorium meant to protect wildlife and combat climate change.

APRIL is part of the PT Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) group, which will also implement sustainability policies, said company director Anderson Tanoto.

peace welcomed the move and suspended all campaigns against RGE companies.

Criticism of palm and pulp and paper plantations often intensifies mid-year because of Indonesian forest fires and haze that affect its neighbouring countries.

JAKARTA - A boat with more than 700 migrants being escorted by Myanmar’s navy towards its western state of Rakhine is expected to reach land Wednesday, according to a senior US official who demanded they be treated “humanely”.

Myanmar authorities have said the 727 passengers onboard the vessel, found adrift in the Bay of Bengal last Friday, were “Bengalis” and have threatened to send them across the border to Bangladesh.

Myanmar describes its persecuted Rohingya Muslim community, numbering around 1.3 million, as “Bengalis”. Most have no citizenship and are considered to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Around 3,500 migrants, mainly Rohingya from Myanmar or economic migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh, have come ashore in Southeast Asia in recent weeks in an ongoing migrant crisis.

The UNHCR estimated Wednesday around 2,000 more are still trapped at sea, heaping pressure on both countries to take back the migrants and improve living conditions to stem the outflow.

US Assistant Secretary of State Anne Richard, who visited camps housing Rohingya refugees in western Indonesia in recent days, confirmed this latest boat was expected to arrive Wednesday.

“The Burmese (Myanmar) authorities would be then responsible for what happens to people on that boat,” she told reporters in Jakarta.

“My understanding is that if they are from Bangladesh, there will be a

quick arrangement with the government of Bangladesh to return their citizens to them.”

She added: “We are following this very closely because we want to make sure any of the innocent people on the boat get proper treatment and are handled humanely.”

She reiterated the US wanted the Rohingya treated as citizens of Myanmar, and would continue pressuring the government in Naypyidaw as it continues its transition to democracy and prepares for elections later this year.

The plight of the Muslim group has come under scrutiny as the migrant crisis has unfurled across in Southeast Asia, after a Thai crackdown on people smuggling threw the multimillion dollar industry into disarray, leading gangmasters to abandon their victims on land and at sea.

US President Barack Obama has recently joined calls urging Myanmar to end discrimination against the Rohingya minority.

When pressed on whether the US would impose sanctions should Myanmar fail to treat the minority population humanely, Richard said they remained an option but were not being actively considered at this stage.

“In the diplomatic toolbox, sanctions is one of the options,” she said.

The Rohingya flee Rakhine in droves each year to escape poverty and persecution in a region where their movements are controlled and they lack access to jobs or basic services. (afp)

TOKYO - The dollar was under pressure on Wednesday after more weak US data clouded the timeline for an interest rate hike, while the euro got a lift from hopes for a long-awaited Greek bailout deal.

The greenback slipped to 123.90 yen in Tokyo trading from 124.09 yen in US trading, and well off a more than 12-year high above 125 yen earlier Tuesday in Asia.

The euro ticked up to $1.1160 and 138.50 yen, against $1.1152 and 138.39 yen in New York, where the unit jumped on figures that showed rising inflation in the

eurozone.

The dollar took a hit from remarks Tuesday by US Fed governor Lael Brainard that a recent run of weak data casts doubt on the strength of the US economy, which clouds expectations for a rate hike later this year.

Fresh data Tuesday showed US factory orders in April fell by a

sharper-than-expected 0.4 percent, logging a decline in eight of the last nine months.

The euro benefited from speculation Greece is moving closer to an 11th hour deal with international creditors to avert a default.

“This was a classic squeeze on the US dollar across the board, and really led by euro,” said Raiko Shareef, a markets strategist at the Bank of New Zealand.

“There was an almost perfect storm of factors to give the US dollar a bit of a knock back,” he

said.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will meet European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker Wednesday for make-orbreak bailout talks, with a deadline looming for Athens to make a critical repayment.

Greece has until Friday to pay 300 million euros owed to the International Monetary Fund.

There are fears that Athens does not have the necessary funds and will default, possibly setting off a chain reaction that could end with a

messy exit from the eurozone.

“The euro clearly has the ability to lead the dollar higher or lower across the board, and really that vulnerability stems from very different potential outcomes you get from the negotiations between Greece and its creditors,” Shareef said.

The European Central Bank will hold a policy meeting later Wednesday.

The offshoot of the annual WEF meeting in the Swiss resort of Davos, which brings public and private business leaders together, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an upbeat outlook as growth across Africa outstrips the global

average.

“The record levels of participation at this year’s gathering can be seen to reflect both an optimism in the economic prospects of the region and an unprecedented commitment... to pursue public-private cooperation,” the WEF said.

A report to be presented to the conference by international investment company JLL says Africa sits at the centre of many corporate growth strategies.

“Over the past decade and a

half alone, Africa’s economy has grown nearly three percentage points faster than global GDP,” the report notes.

“Fuelled by an influx of FDI (foreign direct investment), rapid urbanization and an emerging middle class, African countries, including Mozambique, Zambia and Ethiopia, are forecasted to grow at a faster rate than many other emerging economies.”

It points out that while mining, oil and gas remain a focus in Africa

for overseas investors, business services now top the FDI sector list, followed by manufacturing and sales, marketing and support industries.

Retail and construction also feature in the top 10 amid a surge in response to the demands from urbanization and consumer spending.

Indian shadow puppets enthrall Bali

GIANYAR - Eight Indian puppeteers from Sri Ramajaneya Togalu Gombe Mela enthralled the 300-strong audience comprising students, teachers and Balinese puppeteers (Dalangs) with their dexterity in ‘Togalu Gombyeatta’ shadow puppet show from Karnataka, India, held at the Aula Utama of SMK Negeri 3 Sukawati School in Batubulan on 29 May 2015.

The shadow puppet performance at SMKN3 Sukawati was attended by the Head of the Department of Culture of Gianyar Regency, I Gusti Ngurah Wijana, Principal of SMKN3 Sukawati School, I Gusti Ngurah Serama Semadi & former Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dibia.

‘Togalu Gombeyatta’ is a unique traditional shadow puppet theatre from the State of Karnataka in South India, which can be traced back to thousands of years. In this ancient yet still living puppetry tradition, colourful figures marked on leather sheets made transparent in an age-old traditional technique making use of natural colours drawn from plants or stones are used. The puppeteers manipulate the figures behind a translucent screen and the shadows of the puppets reflect the coloured figures like dressed actors on the screen. Shadow puppet shows are popular among the people in the whole South Indian peninusula.

The Indian artistes performed the episode from Ramayana depicting Devi Sita’s abductions from Panchvati. The audience hugely appreciated the large-sized colourful puppets and their dexterous manipulation and the story-telling by way of songs and dialogues accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as Harmonium, Dholak (drum), Cymbals (convex bronze plates) and Gejje (tiny hollow metal bell).

The puppets used in the Togalu Gombeyatta performance were large-sized and transparent while the Balinese puppets tend to be small in size. However, both Balinese and Indian puppeteers apply similar manipulation techniques and hand joints and leg joints are almost the same in puppetry arts in both countries. The Togalu Gombeyatta puppets, being the shadow puppets, are used behind a screen while the local Indonesian puppets could be manipulated either behind or in front of the screen.

The Indian puppeteers conducted an immersive learn-by-doing Workshop on 30 May 2015 at the School focussing exclusively on the ancient lively art of Togalu Gombeyatta.

50 puppetry students of the School as well as from ISI Denpasar besides teachers of puppetry attended. The Balinese students and teachers enthusiastically learnt about designing, sculpture, architecture, drawing, crafting and painting of the Indian puppets and appreciated the opportunity to experience the show and the art from India. The Indian puppeteers plan to experiment new designs and sculptures from Indonesian puppetry in their performances.

Sri Ramajanya Togalu Gombe Mela troupe, under the leadership of Belagallu Veeranna, has performed extensively across India not only featuring episodes from Ramayana and Mahabharata epics but also performed shows aimed at social objectives such as literacy and public health, in particularly family planning and the eradication of AIDS and Leprosy, Indian freedom strugg l e (Bharat Swatantrata Sangram), Saksharta Andolan (literacy movement) and Bapu (as Mahatma Gandhi is called a ff e c t i o n a t e l y ) i n t h e To g a l u Gombeyatta format, winning the national stature and number of honors for their work.

During his opening remarks, the Consul General of India in Bali, Amarjeet Singh Takhi, thanked the art School for hosting the performance, while emphasizing that these eminent puppeteers from India have nurtured and popularized the traditional art of shadow puppetry not only in India but abroad as well. He elaborated that the Indonesian puppetry has been influenced by various puppetry art forms in India. Currently one of the professors of puppetry at ISI Denpasar is doing research in India for last six months, which will help both countries to learn from each other’s art and techniques for better preservation and propagation of this ancient art format.

He also informed the audience of the plans for marking the International Day of Yoga on June 21 2015 at Lapangan Puputan Margarana, opposite Bali Governor’s office from 6 am onwards and invited all students and their family and friends to participate in the celebrations to bring about harmony and peace in the world.

Ticket price soars high, tourism players at Banyuwedang furious

SINGARAJA - A-hundred-percent rise in the price of admission ticket from Banyuwedang Port at Pejarakan village, Gerokgak, to the Island of Menjangan makes boat drivers and tour guides furious. They consider the determination of price increase for foreign travelers from IDR 20,000 to IDR 200,000 unfair. The increase is triggered by the issuance of the Government Regulation (PP) No.12/2014 governing the admission to the National Park area, and then followed up by the West Bali National Park (TNBB) by dissemination through its circular SE.718 / BTNBB-1/2015.

The increase in admission ticket is recognized by the Group Head of Banyumandi Fishermen, Nyoman Sandi. The rise has been effective since the beginning of June 2015. As a result of the increase in the price of

admission ticket, tourist activity at Banyuwedang Port is deserted. Boat drivers and tour guides expect the Ministry of Forestry can review it.

New price of the admission ticket is considered very high, so that tourism

players and travelers complain about it. Many of travelers even cancel their visit to Menjangan Island.

The Government Regulation No.12/2014 regulates the admission of the National Park area, including the area of Menjangan Island.

Dissemination is then carried out by the TNBB through the circular SE.718/BTNBB-1/2015. Ticket price for foreign travelers rose to IDR 200,000, while domestic travelers at IDR 10,000 on a normal days and IDR 15,000 on holidays and specifically for student is IDR 6,000.

“Ticket price is too expensive, so that many travelers are reluctant to buy it. Obviously it has an impact on

the foreign tourist arrival in the future to Menjangan Island. Revenue will decrease if guests rarely come due to such expensive ticket,” said Sandi, Monday (Jun 1).

Sandi revealed that most locals work as tour guides and boat drivers.

Livelihood of the majority of local residents is from escorting guests.

Government Regulation No.12/2014 has general impact on tourism players at lower level. “We do not mean to blame the TNBB because they are just officers. It has been decided by central government through the results of plenary session of the People’s Representatives. Hopefully, there is a meeting point of the price

pursuant to the capability of travelers. Well, around IDR 50,000 seems still affordable,” he said.

As planned, the tourism stakeholders will boycott the tourism activities on the Island of Menjangan in the near future. Strict protest against the pricing decision is made to open the eyes of the government, and look at the reality of tourism players at lower level. “We will do this (boycott tourism activity—Ed). Without taking action, we’re going to be difficult in the future. They will assess if the dissemination and rule enforcement is successful. We take action so that we can keep on working in the future,” said Sandi. (kmb34)

Mangrove Tour at Jungutbatu Village

Since the year 2000 Jungutbatu village community on the Island of Nusa Lembongan, Klungkung offers a mangrove tour to travelers. Foreign and domestic travelers are taken around to mangrove forest by riding a sampan. This destination can be reached from Sanur and Benoa Harbor by a cruise ship or fast boat.

Nowadays, at this Jungutbatu village has even been formed a group that provide services for mangrove boat tour. Like a public transport, 34 members coalesced into the group also have a queue number when being in operation. “We recruit all the seaweed farmers because they have a sampan. Initially we did not use a

queue, but we then try to negotiate about our future. From the idea, we establish a well-organized group,” said the Mangrove Tour Management Assistant, Gede Adnyana.

Currently, each community has the initiative to promote mangrove tour to travelers.

Now, the mangrove tours continue to grow in line with the rapid development of tourism at Lembongan. At this moment more travelers are escorted by freelance tour guides than supplied by dive cruise dropping in on the island. “Every day at least 10 to 25 sampans take mangrove tour. During high season, we are definitely overwhelmed,”

said Adnyana. He said that during June-July, this featured object is much visited by domestic travelers, while in August is dominated by foreign travelers. Rates are subject to a minimum of IDR 100,000 per sampan with a maximum of four passengers.

“We take side the revenue of IDR 10,000 to the group’s cash. A total of 25 percent goes to village authority, 25 percent to group organization and 50 percent of the cash to the group because each month we also make conservation here, or doing environmental cleanup,” said Adnyana.

Conservation activities in the mangrove area of Jungutbatu are

done seriously. Each group members is routinely required to clean up the mangrove area and make the area look like ever before. On the other hand, the groups or surrounding communities also never cleared the mangrove to make the tour path. In other words, these routes are still natural because it looks like ever before. “If they do not join the cleanup, they will be imposed with a fine of IDR 5,000,” said Adnyana.

Group members seem to have understood about the mangrove conservation. Nyoman Sudiaya, for example, clearly mentions some benefits of the mangrove forests.

Actually, the owner of the line number 31 has now been half a century old. “It functions to prevent tsunami and high waves because high waves once occurred here. Besides, it also becomes the native home to fish and crabs,” said Sudiaya doubling as a seaweed farmer. Considering the vital function of the mangrove, Sudiaya and local residents finally comply with the government rules that prohibit the clearing of mangroves for firewood. “Now, people are not allowed to take firewood here, to prevent waves. Anybody taking the firewood here can be imposed with a fine of IDR 100 million,” he continued. (BTN/kmb)

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that 18 bodies had been pulled from the boat, which was floating with a sliver of its hull jutting from the grey river water about 36 hours after it capsized. A total of fourteen people have been rescued, but the vast majority of the 456 people on board, many of them elderly tourists, were unaccounted for.

The shallow-draft, multi-decked Eastern Star was traveling upstream Monday night from the eastern city of Nanjing to the southwestern city of Chongqing when it overturned in China’s Hubei Province in what state media reported as a cyclone with winds of up to 80 mph (130 kph).

State media reported that rescuers heard people yelling for help within the overturned hull, and divers on Tuesday rescued a 65-year-old woman and, later, two men who had been trapped. CCTV said more people had been found and were being rescued, but did not say whether they were still inside the overturned hull.

The yelling was heard Tuesday, and it is not known if any sounds were heard Wednesday. CCTV said rescuers would possibly support the ship with a giant crane while they cut into portions of the hull.

Thirteen navy divers searched the boat Tuesday, and military authorities said an additional 170 would arrive by Wednesday to vastly expand the pace of those efforts.

Access to the site of the site was blocked by police and paramilitary

troops stationed along the Yangtze river embankment. Scores of trucks belonging to the People’s Armed Police were parked along the verge and at least two ambulances were seeing leaving the area with their lights on and sirens blaring.

Huang Delong, a deck hand on a car ferry crossing the Yangtze several kilometers (miles) upstream of the site, said he was working Monday evening when the weather turned nasty.

“From about 9 p.m. it began raining extremely hard, then the cyclone hit and the wind was really terrifying,” Huang said while crossing the broad river in a steady drizzle Tuesday afternoon.

Huang said he thought it was the worst disaster on that stretch of the river — the world’s third-longest river — in living memory. The official Xinhua News Agency said the sinking could become the country’s worst shipping accident in seven decades.

“We will do everything we can to rescue everyone trapped in there, no matter they’re still alive or not, and we will treat them as our own families,” Hubei military region commander Chen Shoumin said at a news conference shown live on CCTV. The survivors included the ship’s captain and chief engineer, both of whom were taken into police custody, CCTV said. Relatives who gathered in Shanghai, where many of the tourists started their journey by bus, questioned whether the captain did enough to ensure the passengers’ safety and

demanded answers from local officials in unruly scenes that drew a heavy police response.

Xinhua quoted the captain and the chief engineer as saying the four-level Eastern Star sank quickly. The Communist Party-run People’s Daily said the ship sank within two minutes. The overturned ship then drifted about 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) downstream before coming to rest close to shore.

State media originally said there were 458 people on board, but CCTV said Wednesday it had been carrying 405 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and a crew of 46.

The broadcaster said most of the passengers were 50 to 80 years old.

Tour guide Zhang Hui said in an interview with the state-run Xinhua News Agency from his hospital bed

that he grabbed a life jacket with seconds to spare as the ship listed in the storm, sending bottles rolling off tables and suddenly turned all the way over. Zhang, 43, said he drifted in the Yangtze all night despite not being able to swim, reaching shore as dawn approached.

“The raindrops hitting my face felt like hailstones,” he said. “’Just hang in there a little longer,’ I told myself.”

Some survivors swam ashore, but others were rescued after search teams climbed on the upside-down hull.

The 65-year-old woman was rescued by divers who took an extra breathing apparatus up into the bowels of the ship and spent about five minutes teaching her how to use it before bringing her out to safety, Chen said.

TOKYO — The Philippine president is on his sixth visit to Japan in less than five years, signaling his country’s deepening ties with Tokyo amid increasing concerns by both sides about China’s assertiveness in regional seas.

In a speech in Tokyo on Wednesday, President Benigno Aquino III criticized what he called China’s “unlawful territorial claim,” and praised Tokyo for demonstrating solidarity with the Philippines in advocating the problem.

Aquino has been accorded rare state guest status, and also was invited to speak later Wednesday to the upper house of parliament.

During his four-day visit, Aquino will hold talks with Japanese Prime

Minister Shinzo Abe focusing on defense and security ties. The two leaders are expected to sign a deal confirming Japan’s provision of 10 patrol vessels to the Philippine coast guard to bolster its patrolling capability around Manila-claimed South China Sea islands.

Since both countries are U.S. allies and share concerns over China’s maritime activity, the Philippines is extremely important to Japan, said Kenko Sone, spokesman at Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office.

Foreign Ministry officials said Monday that Abe and Aquino were also expected to expand their defense cooperation in other areas, including the transfer of Japanese military equipment and technology

to the Philippines, possibly related to maritime reconnaissance. Tokyo eased its self-imposed ban on military exports last year.

Under Abe’s push to expand Japan’s international defense role, Japan has been expanding its defense cooperation with a number of countries to complement its cornerstone alliance with the U.S. Manila has protested over China’s stepped-up reclamation work on Philippine-claimed islands and maneuvers against Filipino air patrols and fishermen. During an international defense conference last week in Singapore, U.S. officials said China’s expanding reclamation work could be for a military use. (ap)

Nearly one in three cases of depression among young British adults may be traced to having been bullied as adolescents, a study said Tuesday.

Teenage bullying linked to adult depression PARIS - Nearly one in three cases of depression among young British adults may be traced to having been bullied as adolescents, a study said Tuesday.

Researchers published figures in The BMJ journal to back anecdotal evidence that victimised teenagers often go on to struggle later in life.

They had trawled through the findings of a large project in Bristol, western England, that has tracked the health of 14,500 residents since the early 1990s.

In one phase of the project, nearly 4,000 participants completed a questionnaire at the age of 13, and were assessed again five years later for symptoms of depressive illness.

Out of 683 people who reported they had been bullied at least once a week at the age of 13, nearly 15 percent were depressed at 18.

This was nearly triple the rate for teenagers who had not been picked on.

Examples of bullying included kids being excluded by their peers, having lies spread about them, their belongings stolen, and being threatened, blackmailed or even beaten.

When other possible causes

were added to the mix -- such as behavioural or mental problems or family difficulties -- the statistical link with adult depression weakened, but the rate was still twice as high as for non-bullied peers.

Among those frequently victimised, 10 percent experienced depression symptoms for more than two years, the study found.

In the non-bullied group, only four percent suffered a depression lasting so long.

The team calculated that as many as 30 percent of depression cases identified in their study may have been the result of bullying, though the study could not show direct cause-and-effect.

Anti-bullying programmes in schools have been disappointing, noted the researchers.

“Interventions during adolescence could help to reduce the burden of depression later in life.” (afp)

Breastfeeding may lower risk of leukemia

MIAMI - Breastfeeding a baby for at least six months may be linked to a lower risk of childhood leukemia, according to a review of previously published research on the topic Monday.

The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics suggest that breastfed babies have a 19 percent lower risk of the blood cancer compared to babies who are given formula or who are breastfed for a shorter period of time.

“The many potential preventive health benefits of breastfeeding should also be communicated openly to the general public, not

only to mothers, so breastfeeding can be more socially accepted and facilitated,” said the study led by Efrat Amitay and Lital KeinanBoker of the University of Haifa, Israel.

Their study reviewed 18 past studies on the association between breastfeeding and leukemia, the most common childhood cancer.

It accounts for about 30 percent of all pediatric cancers.

While none of the studies explained why or how breast milk could be lowering the risk of childhood leukemia, the researchers suggested it contains “many immunologically active components

and anti-inflammatory defense mechanisms that influence the development of an infant’s immune system.”

However, not all experts agree that the findings are the last word on the matter.

“The suggestion that children who had been breastfed might be at a reduced risk of childhood leukemia has been around for decades,” said Valerie Beral, professor of epidemiology at the University of Oxford.

“However previous research, and that described in this new report, are not sufficiently rigorous to confirm or refute such a claim.”

She noticed parents were asked about what they had done around the time their children were born, and thus “parents’ memory of what they had done years ago was affected by the knowledge that their child had leukemia.”

“The researchers had no way of assessing such an important potential problem, which could well have distorted their results,” she added.

According to Mel Greaves, director of the Centre for Evolution and Cancer at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, the type of cancer studied -- acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)

-- is uncommon and only affects about one in 2,000 children.

“This study also fits in with increasing evidence that infants who are exposed to infections –- through attending day care or contact with older siblings -– are less vulnerable to this type of leukemia,” said Greaves.

“Extended breastfeeding and natural infectious exposures in infancy were part and parcel of human life until relatively recently.

“The increasing incidence of ALL in modern, affluent and hygienic societies may be an unintended consequence of these social changes.” (afp)

Based on observations at a number of markets in Tabanan, most food prices are still normal. Price hike only occurs to some commodities such as onions, garlic and cayenne although the increase is not significant and still within reasonable limit. “Some commodities experiences price hike, while the others show price decrease,” said Wiryawan.

One of the commodities whose price drops is rice. Such price drop, according to Wiryawan, happens due to having entered harvest season. Abundant rice production is predicted to be able to suppress the price of rice in the market and will not experience turmoil of price hike during the upcoming fasting month.

In the meantime, one of the rice collectors in Tabanan, Bagus Siswaputra, revealed that the price of rice is stable and even tends to go down from the previous price. Currently the price of rice for medium quality is IDR 8,000 per kg, while the premium quality is around IDR 9,400 per kg.

He added that the price of rice tending to be stable happens due to the supply from farmers is relatively abundant in line with entering the harvest season. He admitted that in addition to buying rice production from local farmers, his party also buys rice from the NTB and Java. (kmb24)

Sexual abuse cases in children more dominant in Bali

DENPASAR - Cases of child abuse in Bali are getting more alarming. It is evidenced by the increase in the cases of child abuse in this year 2015. Based on the data from the Integrated Reporting on Women and Children Abuse Victim (T2P2KTKPA) of Sanglah Hospital, from January to May 2015 there were 11 cases of child abuse where all of the cases related to sexual abuse. Three children become the victims of sodomy, and eight victims were girls. When compared to the case in 2014, there were only six cases in the first five months.

“The most cases are sexual abuse in girls,” said Ida Bagus Putu Alit, Chairman of the T2P2KTK-PA of the Sanglah Hospital.

Alit said that the abuse cases against children he frequently handled are mostly committed by unknown perpetrators, while some others are committed by the known.

“In Bali the prominent cases are sexual assault, where through the years it shows the same amount, and they are mostly held through

genital organ, while through anal is rare,” he said.

He continued that most abuse cases against children and women coming to hospital are handled with dualism biomedical concept. In other words, at the same time and the same person has a different position namely as patient and as victim. “As patient, it is administered medically and clinically, while as a victim it is administered forensically and legally to be used for evidence by examining the bruising as violence signs,” he explained.

Signs of violence have several forms, such as physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, neglect and deprivation of freedom. Physical violence results in physical injuries and psychological violence results in mental disorders, for instance due to being reviled. Sexual violence concerns all things either through a contact or not. Neglect means intentionally not to meet the needs.

Example of deprivation of freedom, a wife is prohibited from working,

so that it causes dependence on her husband.

Specifically for violence against children (18 years old and under) is said to refer to the WHO program, namely there are nine steps of handling like discovering information, medical examination, documenting to developmental and psychiatric screening. Physical examination is performed in emergency room by observing whether there are injuries or not and whether committed repeatedly or not.

While sexual abuse is evidenced by many circumstantial evidences.

It means that the evidence must be assembled and analyzed so that they can serve as evidence. A check is performed to see the maturity, the presence or absence of signs of violence, the signs of sexual intercourse, the time of intercourse and the result of sexual intercourse whether it causes pregnancy or mental disorder or a sexually transmitted disease. “They all depend on the case, so that it involves a multidisciplinary team,” he said.

Angelina disappearance alleged triggered by family issues

DENPASAR - The disappearance of 8 year old Angeline, sixteen days ago still remains a mystery with no clues as to her whereabouts. The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas-PA) is somewhat concerned with the fate of this young girl so on Tuesday (Jun 2) they returned to the East Denpasar Police.

Chairman of the Commission, Arist Merdeka Sirait, suspects that the girl’s dissapareance was triggered by family issues, including the matter of inheritance.

Arist, went to the East Denpasar Police to coordinate with them in the investigation. So far, there has been no significant developments in locating the victim.

Arist said that his party suspects that the missing elementary school student is victim to family problems and violence. According to Arist, although the victim is a foster child, she still has the right to inherit as much as 60 percent from the family who care for her. “Based on our research, Angeline received inheritance rights in accordance with the will of her de-

ceased adoptive father, an American citizen,” he said.

The second fact that is suspected is that the missing victim suffered violence at the hands of her adoptive mother, Margareth which caused the child to flee from her home on Jalan Sedap Malam 26, Denpasar. “School authorities and school mates , including her daily friends serve as key witness. Benoa harbor hit by theft

DENPASAR - Although located in a special area, Benoa Harbor is still subject to theft cases. Four cans of resin (boat glue) owned by PT Bali Baramundi located on Jalan Tuna III, Benoa, Friday (May 29) were stolen by the culprit with the initials YP and DA. According to the Chief of the Benoa Harbor Police, I Nyoman Gatra,, the two suspects were arrested around six o’clock in the morning on Tuesday (Jun 2). “YP opened the doors of the company while DA took the four jerrycans containing resin,” said Gatra.

After the resin was hoisted onto his motorcycle, DA gave IDR 600,000 worth of cash to YP. DA accompanied by SA then took the stolen goods out of Benoa Harbor and upon arrival at the Pesanggaran traffic lights, unloaded the items. “Once unloaded, Saniman who works as a scavenger returned to Benoa Harbor,” he said.

DA sold a jerrycan of resin to Agus Riyadi for IDR 500,000.

Meanwhile the company reported the loss of its belongings to the Benoa Harbor Police, on Friday (May 29). “Based on the crime scene investigation and examination of witnesses, suspicion lead to the person named YP. After interrogation, the suspect confessed,” explained the former deputy chief of Kuta Police.

DA was arrested after being lured by YP with the promise of being paid the remaining IDR 400,000. DA agreed to meet YP next to the office of the Benoa Water Police Directorate of Benoa where he was arrested. “Based on the results of the investigation, DA, YP and AR have been named as suspects, while SA only serves as a witness in this case,” said Gatra. Bridges presents “Essence of Bali”

UBUD - Bridges next exhibition is a shared one – two very talented Balinese artists are showing their works: Art teacher and pencil drawing artist Ketut Susana creates magic with his pencil. He inspires through his amazing technique and intricate detail, transferring photographs into mesmerizing visuals, mostly in colour but also in black and white. Often his paintings look more real than the original pictures!

Wayan Aksara has been involved with arts since his early childhood and his love for arts and

culture truly shows in his work.

He captures moments in life of the Balinese through a lens of a local – glimpses of sacred ceremonies are his specialty.

As with every exhibition, bridges is supporting the less fortunate and donates 20% of the sales proceeds. Ketut Susana supports a school for handicapped children in Bangli and Wayan Aksara’s desire is to help a 20 years old young person suffering from

cerebral palsy and bound to the wheel chair.

The exhibition launches on Friday, 26 June, 5-8pm with a special event. Guests are invited to a welcome drink, delicious canapés and to meet the artists, explore the works and to enjoy live music and Balinese traditional dance performances on the restaurant’s terrace.

The opening hours are daily from 11:00-23:00.

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BANGLI - The demand for imitation gold flowers produced by craftsmen at Undisan village, Tembuku subdistrict remains high.

Demand for these flowers not only comes from residents of Bangli but from all over Bali. Typically the imitation gold flowers are used as decoration in Balinese customary payas and other ritual paraphernalia.

Imitation gold flower crafter, Wayan Budiastuti, recently said that so far the demand for the imitation gold flowers that she produces is still high and said that she had no significant problems with marketing.

However, the price of raw material to make the imitation gold flower is going up. A sheet of the raw materials that she uses costs IDR 60,000. “A sheet can produce 3-4 scores,” she said.

Budiastuti she can produce up to 5 scores a day. A score of imitation ylang-ylang flower containing 20 pieces and is usually sold for IDR 60,000 to customers from all over Bali. “In addition to customers in Denpasar, I sometimes sell to customers in Singaraja, Klungkung and other counties too,” she said. Ahead of ritual season coming up in June and August, the demand for imitation gold leaf flowers has already started to go up. (kmb40)

Kardashian broke the news Sunday night during a preview of the next season of her show “Keeping up With The Kardashians.”

Clint Eastwood to make biopic of pilot ‘Sully’ Sullenberger

NEW YORK — Clint Eastwood will follow his box-office sensation “American Sniper” with a biopic of pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.

Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Eastwood will direct and produce the not-yet-titled drama as his next film. The film is to

be adapted from Sullenberger’s 2009 memoir, “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters,” which chronicled his personal history before he famously landed a US Airways plane in the Hudson River in New York in 2009.

“I am very glad my story is in

the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood,” Sullenberger said in a statement.

It will be Eastwood’s first film after the biggest box-office hit of his career. The Oscar-winning “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, made $543.4 million glob-

ally for Warner Bros. and became the top domestic release of 2014.

The film will be produced by Frank Marshall and Allyn Stewart and penned by Todd Komarnicki.

BI optimistic Bali’s economy continuing to grow DENPASAR - The Bank Indonesia (BI) (Province of Bali Division) is optimistic about the continued growth of Bali’s economy given that this year growth is 6.72 percent, a higher figure than projected. The national economic growth projections for this year were revised to 5.1 percent form the proviso projection of 5.4 percent (yoy).

“I am optimistic that Bali’s economy will continue to grow, possibly reaching as much as 7.1 percent (yoy). The slowdown earlier this year was temporarily” said Chief Representative of BI for the Province of Bali, Dewi Setyowati, in Denpasar.

According to Setyowati, this optimism is based on peak tourist season, growth in the financial, service and agricultural sectors. “Bali tourism continues to increase from year to year and so does the financial sector, which affects Bali’s overall economy,” she said.

It said that the economic growth of Bali in the first quarter of 2015 reached 6.20 percent (yoy). This figure is still higher than the national economy as it has been for the last few years.

“In terms of supply, the slow-

down of economic growth in Bali is in line with the weak growth in the fields of agriculture, manufacturing and construction,” she explained.

She added that aside from facing the problem of agricultural land conversion, the agricultural sector still faces other problems like weather anomalies, irrigation issues and pest attacks. Meanwhile, the industrial faces the rise in production costs and similar sluggishness as the with the construction market.

“On the other hand, growth in businesses such as accommodations, food and beverage which prominent business fields in Bali, remain is a stable condition thus preventing the slowdown from deepening,” she said.

In the second quarter of 2015, Dewi Setyowati estimated that the economy of Bali would continue to

grow, although perhaps less compared to the same quarter last year.

The growth in the second quarter of 2015 is due to strong consumption and rising investments. This is reflected in the results of a consumer survey conducted by the Bank of Indonesia’s Bali office, that showed an increases from 101.5 in March 2015 to 103.18 in April 2015. Increases in investments are primarily driven by the realization of government projects in the second quarter of 2015.
