Massa expects Ferrari step in Spain

Felipe Massa has backed team-mate Fernando Alonso’s view that Ferrari will make a good step forward in form at the Spanish Grand Prix - but thinks it too much to expect its updates to help it fight for victory straightaway.

With a number of developments to the F2012 due to be run by Alonso at Mugello on Thursday, Ferrari should get a first indication of exactly how much progress it will be able to make with its car for the start of the European season.

And with Alonso looking at a top five grid slot, Massa reckons that getting both cars inside the top ten is what he is setting his sights on.

“This [both Ferrari’s starting in the top ten at Barcelona] is inside my expectation, but we haven’t tried all the new parts so we need to see in Barcelona how it will be and how much they improve the car,” he said after wrapping up

his testing programme in Italy. “Then we can be more realistic, but it is inside my expectations, definitely.”

Ferrari’s hopes of a step forward very much depend on how much progress it makes over its rivals in delivering more speed from its car – which is why Massa is keeping his ambitions in check.

“To close the gap you need to improve much more than the others and they are working and improving,” he said. “In three weeks, you see cars improving by two or three tenths, so we need to make a huge step forward.

“Definitely it [winning races] is a bit too optimistic but when we have new parts and everything on the car then we can talk better.

Without trying the new parts it is difficult to say, but to close the gap to the guys in front and win races is a little bit too optimistic - but we hope.”

Although Massa will not get to try out the latest car upgrades before the Spanish GP, he is not too concerned that he will suffer as a result.

“It is always better to run the new parts, but the programme was like that for Fernando to try the new exhaust yesterday and for me to try the old one today to do the back-to-back,” said the Brazilian.

“Tomorrow we will run some new pieces which are arriving this evening. It won’t be everything, as everything will be ready for Barcelona.”

Sebastian Vettel closed out the last morning of Formula 1 testing at Mugello on top of the timesheets for Red Bull Racing.

The German fired his way to the top of the times with a 1m21.314s flyer just over an hour before the lunch break, and then improved the benchmark time to a 1m21.267s several runs later.

Behind Vettel there was little breathing room. Fresh from topping Wednesday’s times, Romain Grosjean was back in the hunt for Lotus, his best just 0.067 seconds slower than Vettel’s. Fernando Alonso was just 0.029s behind Grosjean, the top three covered by less than a tenth at the break.

But it was not all smooth running for Ferrari.

Just under an hour into the day’s running, Alonso went off at Turn 12, nudging the wall and damaging the front of the F2012. It took more than two hours for the Spaniard to return to the track. The team was running its latest upgrade package - which it hopes will turn its season around - for the first time this morning.

Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso) and Sergio Perez (Sauber) finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Force India’s Paul di Resta was sixth fastest despite having to be rescued from the gravel after an off at the exit of Scarperia halfway through the morning.

Heikki Kovalainen was the busiest driver for the morning, completing 62 laps in the Caterham. He finished up seventh, ahead of McLaren’s Oliver Turvey, Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes and Timo Glock’s Marussia.

Pastor Maldonado ended the morning slowest, after completing just four laps thanks to an electrical problem on the Williams.

Small industry growth of Bali minus 4.25 percent Bali Post

DENPASAR - Having lived through a positive growth as much as 8.47 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, the production growth of micro and small industry (IMK) in the first quarter of 2012 experienced a negative growth of 4.25 percent. Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali also noted the annual growth of IMK indicated negative rate of 4.21 percent.

The Head of BPS Bali, I Gede Suarsa, said the delayed price hike plan of subsidized fuel affected the micro and small businesses. Not a few entrepreneurs were admitted to be disappointed with the policy.

“The policy was considered to have caused the constant increase in price of raw materials and basic needs. Delay in the subsidized fuel price hike results in polemic for business sector. A number of suppliers

have raised the prices of raw materials of production when the policy was still in planning stage,” said Gede Suarsa in Denpasar, Wednesday (May 2).

Such condition, recognized Gede Suarsa, also affected the rate of inflation, in which in the first three months of this year, the inflation rate in Bali had reached 2.01 percent or higher than in the first quarter of 2011 reaching 1.26 percent.

“As a matter of fact, the problems faced by the mi-

cro and small-scale industries are quite numerous and vary.

Among other things, they lack of strengthening effort and capital, particularly the access to banking institution, marketing constraints, design, and technology,” he said.

Gede Suarsa exemplified the financial assistance rolled out by state-owned enterprises intended for the micro and smallscale business remained to face less optimal distribution.

Melasti in Tanah Lot, a Stunning Attraction to Visitors

Classroom damaged, primary school students learn on terrace floor Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Amid the National Education Day, there remained a bleak portrait of education in Tabanan. Such condition was experienced by the students of SDN 2 Senganan primary school, Penebel, Wednesday (May 2). Since the classroom was damaged, they were forced to study at local school terrace floor. The condition had been taking place for long time.

The students studying on the terrace floor belonged to grade 2 amounting to 12 students. Such a measure had to be done because the existing classrooms were unable to accommodate the learning activities. Besides, condition of the building was not feasible to do so. They came into classroom around 09:00 a.m. local time. While waiting for the empty classroom used by grade 1, they held a school lesson on the terrace. Without a single covering, the students were sitting and listening attentively to the lessons from their teacher, as well as working on the tasks given. Learning process on the terrace lasted for about an hour. Then, at 10.00 a.m., they came into classroom after the grade 1 went home. “Well, we do not what to do, our classroom is indeed inadequate. Many classrooms have been damaged, so that they cannot be entirely used,” said Principal of SDN 2 Senganan, Ni Made Sulasmi.

This woman said the total existing classrooms actually could accommodate all students. However, among the six classrooms, only three could be

feasibly used. Meanwhile, the other classrooms including the principal room had been shambles and almost collapsed. Condition of the classrooms alternately used by grade 1 and 2 had also been miserable. However, they were better than the other defective classrooms. Tiled roof had perforated and fallen. Meanwhile, all the buffering timber had been fragile, too.

More miserably, the classrooms were not only damaged. The school located in remote area also lacked of teaching staff. Total teaching and administration staff amounted to 9 people. The teachers with status as civil servant, including school principal, were only 4 people, while the remaining three staff consisted of three teachers of religion and 2 volunteer teachers as well as a teacher with official memorandum.

“We only have one classroom teacher. So, it should teach alternately,” complained Sulasmi. She told to have submitted the repair proposal of the school building for several times, including the addition of teachers.

Unfortunately, until this moment the result was nothing. Even, since last January, one of the classroom teachers was mutated to another school. If there was no immediate repair, her party had planned to separate some classrooms by installing partition because the damaged classrooms were impossible to be used. Her party worried the roof would collapse if used forcibly.

The Head of Tabanan Education Agency, Putu Santika, asserted the issue of classroom building of SDN 2 Senganan was still waiting for the proposal submitted to central government. However, if it would not get response this year, his party would allocate a budget through special allocation fund (DAK).

“We have met the figures of Senganan residents. The school buildings will be relocated and the land has been ready,” he said. According to Santika, the new building got special attention. Hopefully, the new building could be constructed immediately so as not to harm and endanger the students. (kmb30)

Melasti procession becomes a prominent tourist attraction.] Melasti procession of the Beraban customary villagers in conjunction with the Nyepi or Day of Silence on Tuesday (Mar 20) was held grandiosely. It was a purification ceremony for the macrocosm and microcosm by the Hindus in Bali. The procession was followed by devotees from 44 temples existing at villages in the region and 5 barong effigies were carried.

Beraban is the customary village having responsibility for the existence of Tanah Lot tourist object.

Such procession involved thousands of people wearing traditional Balinese costumes. As a result, the road section in the north of Beraban customary village to Tanah Lot was closed temporarily. By all means, all the tourists at Tanah Lot were unable to leave the Tanah Lot tourist object. On the contrary, visitors who would like to visit the Tanah Lot were unable to go to the destination before the procession came to an end.

Interestingly, the delay to leave Tanah Lot due to traffic congestion at the object even brought in an unpredictable pleasure.

Not a few of the foreign and local tourists used the momentous and rare moment. Even, the tourists were truly excited to watch the procession at Tanah Lot. They took pictures to immortalize the festive melasti procession, and solemn atmosphere of devotees who wanted to pray in the Tanah Lot Temple.

Indeed, it has become a tradition where every time welcoming the Caka New Year, the Tanah Lot destination became the main destination of melasti procession. For the Nyepi celebration of this Caka New Year 1934, the procession lasted so long from March 18 until March 22, 2012. The procession was not only performed by the Hindu community from Beraban village, but also from other villages. By and large, the procession was usually held early in the morning or around 06:00 a.m. local time onwards and centered in the Segara Kidul of Tanah Lot. (BTN/015)

The worries of booming bird flu seemed to cause Animal Husbandry, Fishery and Sea of Denpasar increasing the supervision of any bird distribution to Denpasar City.

For that spraying was intensified at bird markets and traditional markets also in the border of the city. As seen last Wednesday (2/5) the team involving the Agency, Peace and Order Agency also Transportation Agency, stopped any carrying vehicles containing bids at IB Mantra By Pass, Denpasar, where the hundreds of birds came from Bangli, Karangasem, Gianyar and Klungkung.

Head of Public Health and Veterinary of the Agency, drh. Astriwati, stated the spraying towards the birds has been a routine even though there is any issue bird flu. Astriawati suggested the people who has birds to clean their birds waste with soap water. Besides that their birds should be placed on the sun as the virus can’t stand the sun. “If any of them died suddenly has to be reported. If all the people understands , I’m sure the virus will be avoided,” Astriwati stated.

Based on Bali Post, the total of vehicles carrying broiler chickens was stopped and sprayed. Spraying was under five minutes and its driver has to report their bird and their destination.(kmb13)

Spurs blow out Jazz 114-83 to take 2-0 lead Associated Press Writer

SAN ANTONIO — Tony Parker shooed away the NBA coach of the year. The San Antonio Spurs were ahead 36 points and he didn’t want Gregg Popovich to end his night just yet.

“To stay in shape,” Parker said.

That’s how bad it got for the Utah Jazz. It was the third quarter of a playoff game, and Parker by then was practically treating it as just another workout.

Pummeling the Jazz in a fashion not seen since Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls humiliated them in the 1998 NBA Finals, San Antonio handed Utah its second-worst playoff loss, winning 114-83 on Wednesday night to take 2-0 lead in the first-round series.

Parker scored 18 points, while Popovich — a day after receiving the NBA’s highest coaching honor — could practically put the Spurs on autopilot after a 20-0 run in the second quarter. Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin had admitted to being unusually jittery before losing Game 1, but this time, it was center Al Jefferson summing up how this shiner felt.

“Embarrassing,” he said.

The only bigger embarrassment for the Jazz in the playoffs was that 42point loss to Jordan’s Bulls in 1998.

Game 3 is Saturday night in Salt Lake City.

It’s the first time the Spurs have led a series 2-0 since opening the 2008 playoffs against Phoenix. San Antonio won that series in five, and unless the Jazz can shake this off, this one will be over just as quick.

If not sooner.

“I can’t explain it. I couldn’t explain it the other night,” Jazz forward Paul Millsap said. “They came out and just whipped us.”

It was a total collapse by the Jazz in spite of flying back to Salt Lake City after Game 1 and regrouping with two days of practice back home. There they had talked about adjustments and maybe giving Parker “a hard foul or two” to get him thinking twice about driving, but Parker didn’t seem to have a dent on him before taking the entire fourth quarter off.

Jefferson and Millsap weren’t any more imposing on offense than they were defensively. Jefferson scored 10 points, and Millsap had nine.

Popovich chalked the blowout more to the Jazz having a bad night — they shot 23 percent in the first half — than the Spurs dominating. Parker played 28 minutes and Popovich said the decision on when to take his star out was a struggle between keeping him in condition and not risking injury.

“He wanted to get the whole quarter, but we compromised and got two more minutes,” Popovich said. “He’s been special for us all year, obviously. We got to keep him ready to go.”

The Spurs held the Jazz scoreless for nearly 7 minutes in the second quarter while rookie Kawhi Leonard and unheralded swingman Danny Green outplayed the Jazz’s stars. The Jazz filed off the court at halftime walking slow, heads down and quiet after being as close as 31-26 minutes earlier.

Jefferson and Josh Howard, who also had 10 points, were Utah’s leading scorers.

It was the most lopsided postseason win for the Spurs since beating the Nuggets by 28 in 2005. San Antonio’s playoff record is a 40-point victory over Denver in 1983.

“You don’t expect to win a playoff game like that,” Green said. “They’re a very good team, but they didn’t shoot it as well as they liked. They didn’t

shoot it as well as they did, and we shot the ball pretty well. Stuff like that happens.”

The Spurs have won 12 in a row, a season high after surrendering two 11-game winning streaks this season by not playing Parker, Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

Duncan finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Leonard scored 17 points, and Green had 13.

At least the Jazz didn’t look the most embarrassed the entire night. Popovich again had to show off his coach of the year trophy before the game, this time for fans while standing between Duncan and Spurs great David Robinson. Popovich obliged for several seconds before scrambling to hand the trophy off to one of his assistants as fast as possible.

Indonesia’s world featherweight boxing champion Chris John vowed to knock out Japanese challenger Shoji Kimura with the new “dragon fire punch” he claims to have been working on when the two fighters meet this weekend. “I am targetting a KO or at least a TKO (technical knockout) victory against Kimura,” John said ahead of Saturday’s bout at the Marina Bay Sands casino resort in Singapore.

“I’ve been practising a special punch with my trainer... that I call the dragon fire punch, which will surely knock Kimura out,” added the 32-year-old undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion and WBA Fighter of the Decade.

“This is the Year of the Dragon... and I am the Dragon.”

Nicknamed “The Dragon”, John boasts 46 wins, including 22 knockouts, with two draws.

But the hard-punching Kimura, a veteran with 24 wins, including nine knockouts, promised a tough fight. “Chris John’s people want a war, they want a fighter who will come to fight.

I am that fighter,” said the 34year-old. “One of us will be knocked out, this fight will not go the distance. I will be the new champion.”

British Greco-Roman wrestler Myroslav Dykun, a top medal hope at the London Olympics, has tested positive for amphetamines, British Wrestling confirmed on Thursday. The 29-yearold, originally from Ukraine, failed a test for the drug and is awaiting the outcome of a B sample.

“I can confirm that he has failed his A sample. The drug was amphetamines,” British Wrestling’s chief executive Colin Nicholson said.

Dykun won gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in the 66kg category and

was regarded as one of Britain’s best hopes of a medal in the British capital.

He will now miss the Games if his B-test returns positive. He has already been banned from competing and had his funding stopped. “He is immediately suspended from competition and funding,” Nicholson added.

“Under no circumstances do we condone drug-taking in any form -- whether it be recreational or performance-enhancing. British Wrestling will not tolerate such behaviour from anyone “This is evidence that we are determined to work in partnership to root out anyone mis-using substances.”

LONDON - Either Fernando Torres of Chelsea or Andy Carroll of Liverpool, who have both hugely under-achieved since their record-breaking transfers last year, will claim one of English soccer’s major prizes when their teams meet in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Torres, at least, has recently shown glimpses of why Chelsea paid 50 million pounds ($81.10 million) to Liverpool for him in January last year - a record fee between British clubs.

The Spaniard has scored four goals in his last three games, including last week’s solo effort at Barcelona which sealed Chelsea’s place in the Champions League final on May 19. He also scored his first hat-trick for Chelsea in their 6-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday but failed to hit the net in Wednesday’s 2-0 home defeat by Newcastle United and in total has scored only 12 times for Chelsea.

Carroll became the most expensive British player of all time when Liverpool paid Newcastle United 35 million pounds for him to replace Torres, but has scored only 11 goals in 54 matches for Liverpool since.

At least his late header against Everton in the semi-final at Wembley three weeks ago guaranteed Liverpool a return to the London stadium for the final.

Now the two strikers, both dropped from their national sides and both remarkably unproductive in front of goal, have the chance of lasting redemption and a place in their club’s folklore as an FA Cup winner.

Despite the focus on the Premier League, and a late kickoff (1615 GMT) for this year’s final rather than its traditional 1500 start, the FA Cup is still one of soccer’s grand occasions.

The match is being shown live to a huge global audience in more than 120 countries and, as everyone in football never tires of saying, the money is all very well but winning silverware is what matters.

Liverpool have already picked up a trophy this season with a win over Cardiff City on penalties in the League Cup final in February.

Their league form though, has been erratic and continued to disappoint on Tuesday when a side showing nine changes from the previous game lost 1-0 at Anfield to Fulham - the first time Fulham had won a match there in 30 attempts over 78 years.

ROTTERDAM - Ajax Amsterdam coach Frank de Boer completed the most difficult job of his career on Wednesday when he led the club to a 31st Dutch title, overcoming a number of obstacles to end a turbulent season on a high. De Boer led Ajax to last season’s title after taking over from the sacked Martin Jol in 2010 but his chances of a repeat success were undermined when club legend Johan Cruyff became involved in a bitter and unsettling boardroom dispute.

The side’s pre-season targets of a successful title defence and to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League looked doomed to fail when a run of five domestic matches without a victory left them well off the pace in the league standings. Ajax failed to achieve their Champions League goal and the internal power struggle intensified in February when the other members of the five-man board of commissioners appointed Louis van Gaal as the new club director behind Cruyff’s back.

“That was not a pleasant period as the club was divided into two groups and several people acted strangely and were avoiding their rivals,” De Boer was quoted as saying in Dutch weekly Voetbal International. “For me, it felt like I had to choose between a son and a daughter in opting to take the side of either Cruyff or Van Gaal.”

The dispute was resolved on Feb. 7 when an Amsterdam court decreed that Van Gaal could not be appointed as director. “I supported Cruyff publicly as he had asked me to and I also agree with his technical and tactical blueprint for the club,” De Boer added.

Batur caldera tourism included in GGN of UNESCO Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Batur caldera tourism area of Bangli is targeted to be included in the part of Global Geopark Network (GGN) of the UNESCO in 2012. This determination is ascertained to have a positive impact on the increase in tourist arrivals to Bali in the coming years.

It was revealed by the Head of Bali Cultural Agency in Denpasar, I Ketut Suastika, Thursday (May 2). Aside from the caldera geopark of Mount Batur, some areas in Bali had also been registered to become a part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage, including the strip of Pakerisan River, Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi in Ubud and Jatiluwih along with its subak system in Tabanan.

“Hopefully, this can be entered into the world cultural heritage by UNESCO. As a result, it will surely be able to uplift the economy of the surrounding area. Let’s wait for the announcement this year,” he said.

Director General of Tourism Destination Development, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Firmansyah Rahim, also admitted the determination of Batur by UNESCO should have been done this year. Apparently, there were some drawbacks, including the management, but it had been repaired accordingly.

“Arrangement efforts are now ongoing while waiting for the stipulation by

UNESCO,” he said.

Firmansyah Rahim mentioned that government initially proposed the area of Pacitan and Mount Batur to UNESCO as a Geopark.

However, this year only the area of Batur caldera was nominated. UNESCO would announce the establishment of Lake Batur area as one of the World Geoparks in September 2012.

For information, on May 10-17, the Regent of Bangli and Directorate General of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy would go to Japan to attend a session in conjunction with the determination of geopark. Feasibility of Batur caldera was ready to be judged as part of global geopark network.

On that account, the Batur Caldera Geopark was expected to be entered into the big family of Global Geopark Network. Batur Geopark was considered to have special potential of geological heritage, namely inter-relation of geology to cultural heritage, volcano to local culture as well as volcano to local farming. Irrigation canal of Subak Tamblang damaged Farmers struggle for water Negara (Bali Post)—

Many irrigation canals of Subak Tamblang, Jembrana have been damaged. The irrigation canal passing through two villages, namely Batuagung and Dangin Tukadaya village, cannot now function optimally. Based on observation on Wednesday (May 2), the irrigation canal was damaged at some points presumably due to getting eroded by water. As a result, the water then got wasted in vain and could not stream down into farmers’ rice fields. Similarly, farmers located in downstream area often complained as they did not get water. They consequently struggled for water.

Many water flows from the main canal in the dam of Tukadaya River had been buried in the ground because the water canal passed around the neighborhood of residents. As consequence, the water could not stream down smoothly. Besides, the land of residents over the irrigation canal appeared to have been eroded.

It occurred because a lot of barriers or abutments of the canal had been damaged. One of the residents of Anyar hamlet, Batu

Agung, IB Awan, said the damage to a number of abutments originally happened to a small part. However, since it was long neglected the water then overflowed and the abutment at some points had been damaged. Estimated, the abutment located near the settlement was damaged along 100 meters.

Another resident, Agung Alit, said that such condition had occurred for a year. Since many canals were broken then the water could not be accommodated and streamed down to other places like to the garden of residents and other canals. When it rained, the water overflowed from the canal onto the street. As a result, some subak members often struggled for water.

Luckily, at the moment the paddy plants of farmers in the subak territory only required little water because they would be going to enter harvest time. However, in the upcoming planting season they would have difficulty to obtain water. Other than Subak Tamblang, the water also streamed down to Subak Tegalwani and other subak territories in downstream area. Sarkozy fails to floor Hollande in French vote duel PARIS - French President Nicolas Sarkozy made a last-ditch appeal to far-right voters on Thursday after failing to land a knockout blow in a heated televised debate with Socialist rival Francois Hollande before Sunday’s decisive runoff.

A selection of documents seized in last year’s raid on bin Laden’s house in Pakistan will be posted online Thursday by the Army’s Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy.

The correspondence shows a leader revered but sometimes ignored by field commanders, who dismissed him as out of touch even as he urged them to keep attacking U.S. targets.

White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan said this week that bin Laden’s own words confirm that America is safer with him gone. Brennan says bin Laden wrote of his worries that his leaders were being killed so quickly the group would not survive.

BEIJING — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told China on Thursday that it must protect human rights, in remarks that rejected Beijing’s criticism of the U.S. for getting involved in the case of a blind dissident whose fate overshadowed the opening of annual talks between the powerful countries.

Clinton said at the opening of the talks on foreign policy and economic issues that the U.S. believes “all governments have to answer our citizens’ aspirations for dignity and the rule of law and that no nation can or should deny those rights.”

Her comments came as the dissident, Chen Guangcheng, pleaded for more help from Washington. The blind, selftaught lawyer took refuge in the U.S. Embassy after escaping house arrest, but left Wednesday to get treatment for a leg injury at a Beijing hospital. He initially said he had been assured that he would be safe in China, but hours later he said he fears for his family’s safety unless they are all spirited abroad.

China already demanded an apology from the U.S. even before Chen balked at a deal in which he would remain in his homeland. Now that he wants to leave, the case is looming over talks in which Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner are to discuss foreign policy and economic issues with their Chinese counterparts.

China’s President Hu Jintao said at the opening of the talks that China and the United States “must know how to respect each other” even if they disagree.

“Given our different national conditions, it is impossible for both China and the United States to see eye to eye on every issue,” he said in the only part of the opening ceremony that was broadcast on state television. “We should properly manage the differences by improving mutual understanding so these differences will not undermine the larger interests of China-U.S. relations.”

Neither Hu nor Clinton specifically mentioned Chen, who had spent six days holed up in the U.S. Embassy as senior officials in Beijing and Washington tussled over his fate. A shaken Chen told The Associated Press from his hospital room Wednesday that Chinese authorities had warned he would lose his opportunity to be reunited with his family if he stayed longer in the embassy.

U.S. officials verified that account. But they adamantly

denied his contention that one American diplomat had warned him of a threat from the Chinese that his wife would be beaten to death if he did not get out of the embassy.

They also denied his claim that American officials have left the hospital where he is being treated for a leg injury suffered in his escape.

“I think we’d like to rest in a place outside of China,” Chen told the AP, appealing again for help from Washington. “Help my family and me leave safely.”

Only hours earlier, U.S. officials said they had extracted from the Chinese government a promise that Chen would join his family and be allowed to start a new life in a university town in China, safe from the rural authorities who had abusively held him in prison and house arrest for nearly seven years.

NEW YORK — Four months ago the U.S. government sought to block publication of two studies about how scientists created an easily spread form of bird flu. Now a revised version of one paper is seeing the light of day with the government’s blessing. The revision appears online Wednesday in the journal Nature.

It’s the near-conclusion to a drama that pit efforts to learn how to thwart a global flu epidemic against concerns about helping terrorists create bioweapons. The second paper, which is more controversial because it involves what appears to be a more dangerous virus, is expected to be published later in the journal Science.

For some experts, the affair

underscores a more basic question about whether creating potentially risky versions of bird flu is a good idea.

“Clearly, research like this can be beneficial” for dealing with the bird-flu threat, said Dr. Eric Toner of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s biosecurity center.

But there’s the question of calculating risk versus benefit, he said.

“If we’re taking a highly lethal virus and making it more transmissible, it’s a tough judgment... These sorts of decisions should be made in advance of the research being done, not when the papers are ready for publication.”

The bird flu that has spread among poultry in Asia for several years now can be deadly, but it rarely sickens people. And people generally catch it from chickens and ducks, not from other people.

Scientists have worried that as virus strains mix in nature, they could produce a deadly bird flu that transmits easily from one person to another. That could set the stage for a flu pandemic.

A new ancient fish with a sharklike tail discovered in Canada was a fast-moving, aggressive predator, quite unlike its sluggish relatives today.

Today’s coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) is famous for being a “living fossil.” Researchers thought these large, paddle-tailed fish had gone extinct during the Cretaceous period — until a fisherman caught a living coelacanth off the east coast of South Africa in 1938.

Modern coelacanths, and most fossilized species, are slow moving, “lay-in-wait” type of predators, according to study researcher Mark Wilson, a paleontologist at the University of Alberta in Canada. But the new specimen, dubbed Rebellatrix divaricerca, had a forked tail, much like today’s tuna or sharks.

“Fish with forked tails are able to achieve higher speeds and sustain them over a greater period of time,” study researcher Andrew Wendruff, also of the University of Alberta, wrote in an email to LiveScience.

“The forked tail of Rebellatrix indicated that it was a fast-moving, aggressive predator.” No other coelacanth in the fossil record sports a forked tail, Wendruff said.

Rebellatrix “shatters the commonly held notion that coelacanths

were an evolutionarily stagnant group in that their body shape and lifestyle changed little since the origin of the group,” he said. “Rebellatrix is dramatically different than anything previously known.”

For all its evolutionary audacity, Rebellatrix was likely a “spectacular failure in the evolution of cruising predation,” Wendruff said. The fish evolved after the Permian mass extinction, which occurred about 252 million years ago and killed off more than 90 percent of all marine species.

It likely filled a niche vacated by the mass extinction, Wendruff said, but this honeymoon period didn’t seem to last long. There is no record of Rebellatrix or its descendents in the later fossil record.

The researchers discovered several fossilized Rebellatrix specimens and fragments in and around Wapiti Lake Provincial Park in British Columbia. They acquired another specimen, also found in the park, from a collector who had owned it since the 1950s. At the time the fish was alive, the park area would have been an ocean off the west coast of the supercontinent Pangaea. The fish was about 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) long with a slender body and the thick fins still seen on coelacanths today.

HELSINKI/LONDON - Nokia’s outgoing Chairman Jorma Ollila promised a range of new products ahead of a meeting on Thursday with shareholders who are increasingly losing patience with the company’s recovery efforts. In an interview published on Thursday, Ollila told the Financial Times the Finnish company would launch a range of tablets and “hybrid” smart mobile devices, but did not say when.

Ollila, who will step down at the meeting after 27 years with the

company, told the Financial Times that Nokia had been too slow at the start of the smartphone revolution, but said the combination of new products and Nokia services would help.

Nokia is widely expected to unveil its first tablet computer later this year when Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system becomes available.

“Nokia’s fate in tablets is directly linked to Microsoft, which also has to succeed in this space,” said Pohjola analyst Hannu Rauhala.

Nokia has lost out to Apple Inc and Google Inc in the smartphone

business and is now pinning hopes of a turnaround on Lumia, a new range of smartphones which use Microsoft software.

Once hailed as a national hero in Finland for transforming Nokia from a toilet paper-to-rubber boots conglomerate to the world’s No 1 cellphone maker in 1998, Ollila has since come under criticism for neglecting the emergence of smartphones.

“Tablets are an important one, so that is being looked into, and there will be different hybrids, different form factors in the future,” he said.

LOS ANGELES — After popping up in cameos during the credits of Marvel films as the authoritative, eye-patch-wearing Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson steps fully into his role as the head of peacekeeping agency S.H.I.E.L.D. in “The Avengers.”

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BEIRUT - Syrian rebels killed 15 members of the security forces in an ambush on Wednesday, a monitoring group said, and a human rights organization accused Damascus of war crimes in last month’s run-up to a U.N.-brokered truce. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has been tracking the 14-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, said two rebel militiamen also died in clashes that followed the ambush in the northern province of Aleppo.

State media carried no news of the attack, the latest in a series of heavy losses inflicted on proAssad forces in the last week by some of the disparate militias fighting for his downfall.

Twelve soldiers died in a firefight in the eastern town of Deir al-Zor on Tuesday, the Observatory said, and nine people, including security officials, died in twin suicide bombs in the restive town of Idlib on Monday, according to state media. Most independent media are barred from Syria or have their movements restricted, making it hard

to verify such reports.

The United Nations says Syrian forces have killed 9,000 people in a violent crackdown on mass protests that started against Assad in March 2011. The initially peaceful demonstrations have since turned into a bloody guerrilla insurgency.

Damascus says 2,600 personnel have been killed by “armed terrorists”. Since a U.N.-backed ceasefire came into effect on April 12, it has cited rebel assaults as justification of its right to respond to “any violation or attack”.

The United Nations now has 30 blue-helmeted monitors inside the nation of 23 million people, and this week accused both proand anti-Assad forces of violating the three-week-old truce. On Tuesday it said it had credible reports of at least 34 children killed since the ceasefire came into effect.

BEIJING — U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urged Beijing to let its tightly controlled currency strengthen and improve market access amid trade strains at a high-level economic dialogue Thursday.

Beijing has allowed the yuan to rise gradually but Washington and other trading partners complain it still is undervalued, giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage and hurting foreign competitors. Some American lawmakers are calling for punitive tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing fails to act faster.

This week’s talks, overshadowed by a diplomatic tussle over a blind Chinese legal activist, come as a weak global economy and pressure on governments of developed countries to reduce unemployment are fueling trade complaints against China.

Washington considers “particularly important” the promise of a stronger yuan in China’s latest five-year economic development plan, Geithner said in prepared remarks for the opening of the two days of talks.

In more pointed language last month, Geithner complained an undervalued yuan was a source of “unfair competition.” He called for a “stronger, more market-determined” exchange rate and said that would help the global economy.

Chinese officials have said that

future gains by the yuan are likely to be limited, setting up a possible clash with Washington. Premier Wen Jiabao said in March the currency might have reached an “equilibrium exchange rate.”

Washington welcomes Beijing’s move last month to widen the daily trading band within which the yuan is allowed to fluctuate from 0.5 percent to 1 percent but thinks it fails to go far enough to create a market-driven exchange rate, according to a senior administration official with Geithner’s delegation.

U.S. officials also pressed China to create a more “level playing field” for foreign companies by removing import barriers, said the official, who briefed reporters about the talks on condition of anonymity.

The United States reported its trade deficit with China reached an all-time high of $295.5 billion last year, up 8.2 percent from 2010’s previous record.

The U.S. Commerce Department announced last month it would impose new import fees on Chinesemade solar panels after concluding

manufacturers received improper subsidies. Chinese authorities announced their own probe in November into whether U.S. support for renewable energy companies hurts foreign suppliers.

China’s envoy to the economic talks, Vice Premier Wang Qishan, called on Washington to ease controls on exports of high-tech goods. Such controls are imposed on “dual-use” goods such as supercomputers with possible military applications.

Talks were continuing on loosening export restrictions and smoothing the way for more Chinese investment in the United States, according to the U.S. official.

“The global economic recovery remains sluggish and the situation is grim and complicated,” Wang said.

Geithner expressed support for China’s plans to overhaul its financial system to increase support for private enterprise and reduce special treatment for state-owned companies. He said the plans reflect Beijing’s recognition that it has to rely more on private sector innovation and allow more competition from foreign companies.

FRANKFURT - Deutsche Lufthansa , Germany’s biggest airline, announced plans to slash 3,500 administrative jobs around the world as it tries to return to profitability.

“We can only safeguard jobs for the long term and create new openings if we reorganize the administrative functions and accept job losses now,” Chief Executive Christoph Franz said in a statement on Thursday.

Lufthansa fared better in the global economic crisis than peers such as Air France-KLM and British Airways , but Franz, who took the job at the start of last year, has said the airline needs to radically cut costs to remain competitive.

He has vowed to improve results by 1.5 billion euros ($2.0 billion) by the end of 2014 as margins are squeezed by high fuel prices, a weak European economy and fierce competition from low-cost carriers and Middle East airlines.

Lufthansa, which has a workforce of about 117,000 people worldwide, said one third of the savings is to come from reducing staff costs. Other measures include closer cooperation between its main Lufthansa brand and its low-cost carrier Germanwings and bundling some purchasing.

The news comes a day after Lufthansa reported a first-quarter operating loss that more than doubled to 381 million euros, missing a consensus forecast of a 289 million euro loss.

It still sees 2012 operating profit declining to a figure in the mid-hundreds of millions of euros, which excludes possible costs related to the cost-cutting program.

Shares in Lufthansa fell in early trading and were down 2.07 percent at 9.70 euros at 0703 GMT.

ECB to hold fire on growth steps in crisis-hit Spain Reuters

FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank will resist pressure to do more to fight the euro zone crisis when it meets in Barcelona on Thursday, holding fire despite calls to restart its bond-buying program to help austerity-hit Spain.

Financial markets are clamoring for the ECB to step up its efforts to fight the two-year crisis by buying the sovereign bonds of Spain, which is in recession and is struggling to convince some of its people of the need for further austerity.

But ECB policymakers, who will face demonstrators protesting against Spain’s harsh austerity measures in the Catalonian capital, are more likely to pay homage to the country’s drive to cut costs than to signal any new policy action like restarting the bond-buy program, or Securities Markets Programme (SMP).

The bank has left the plan dormant for the last seven weeks despite a rise in Spanish yields to 6 percent. A break above that, to 7 percent, is considered an unsustainable price to pay for refinancing its debt.

“I think the reactivation of the SMP will occur only at a point at which the situation has deteriorated significantly and I think the pressure would have to be greater than that we’ve seen in recent weeks,” said RBS economist Nick Matthews.

The ECB will almost certainly leave its main interest rate on hold at a record low of 1 percent, though markets will be listening for any hint that the bank could be ready to cut later this year if the euro zone economy deteriorates further. ECB President Mario Draghi faces resistance from Germany’s powerful Bundesbank to any potential interest rate cut or a reactivation of the bond-buy programme, which the central bank could use to lower Spanish bond yields.

“The euro crisis has not escalated to such an extent recently that he would want to take on the Bundesbank on that,” Berenberg Bank economist Holger Schmieding said of the bond-buy programme.

Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann told Reuters last month Spain should take the rise in its bond yields as a spur to tackle the root causes of its debt woes and not look to the ECB to help by buying its bonds.

JAKARTA - Jakarta’s carpooling laws were meant to ease traffic jams. Instead, they have spawned an industry of professional hitchhikers who help drivers comply with highway rules -- for a fee.

Hundreds of men, women and children line the main arteries of the Indonesian capital every weekday, offering to ride in private vehicles during rush hours, when cars are obliged to carry at least three passengers on key stretches.

The “jockeys” -- as they are known -- do not stick out their thumbs like typical hitchhikers around the world. Here, one finger signifies a jockey working solo, while two offers a pair, usually a mother with a child in tow or a baby in a batik sling.

In a country where millions are struggling to climb out of poverty and into an expanding middle class the jockeys -- who charge about a dollar a ride -- have turned their services into a career.

Jimmy, 22, has jockeying down to a fine art. In the hodgepodge of roadside competitors waiting for a ride, he stands out with his silver-rimmed spectacles and blue chequered shirt tucked neatly into a pair of black trousers.

“Chauffeurs in BMWs and Mercedes cars often pick me up because I can pass off as their employer’s

friend or relative. Motorists don’t want to get caught by police so jockeys have to help them minimise the risk,” said Jimmy, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Cars picking up jockeys can face fines of up to one million rupiah ($109). But in a country where official corruption is rife, a 200,000 rupiah bribe is usually enough to get off the hook.

“Generally, nobody wants to get stuck in a jam with someone with smelly armpits. For my efforts, I ask for an extra 5,000 rupiah (54 cents) and I usually get it,” Jimmy said.

Green groups say deforestation ban ‘weak’ Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - A coalition of green groups in Indonesia on Thursday criticised a moratorium on deforestation as “weak”, saying the year-long ban still excludes large tracts of the country’s carbon-rich forests.

Greenpeace, which is leading the coalition, said government maps that mark protected areas exclude 3.5 million hectares (8.6 million acres) of peatland -- biodiverse swamp-like forests that hold rich carbon reserves.

Greenpeace said the government must review all existing logging permits on the country’s natural forests and peatland, and improve governance based on an accurate set of maps.

“The government cannot hope to improve forest governance and ensure the effectiveness of the moratorium without taking these crucial steps,” Greenpeace Southeast Asia political campaigner Yuyun Indradi said in a statement.

An earlier review of the maps by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that the moratorium leaves almost 50 percent of

Indonesia’s 100 million hectares of natural forest and peatland unprotected.

“The current moratorium is weak and does very little in effect to protect the forests,” said Deddy Ratih, a forest campaign manager for Friends of the Earth Indonesia.

The two-year moratorium came into effect last year as the centrepiece of a deal with Norway, which pledged $1 billion to Indonesia under a UN-backed scheme to reduce emissions from deforestation.

That deal was part of a larger commitment made by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2009 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from levels that year by 26 percent by 2020, or 41 percent with international support.

The coalition charged that the moratorium -- which was originally supposed to include all natural forests -- had been watered down to protect just older primary forests and peatland because of pressure from big business.

Indonesia is often cited as the world’s third-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, due mainly to rampant deforestation by the palm oil, mining and paper industries.

He stated that the man was an army captain, identified by his initial of A, and he would certainly be punished.

The video titled “Cowboy in Palmerah” has gone viral through YouTube and also been broadcast nationwide by national television stations. The two-minute video clip uploaded by “UnpluggedTheTV” shows two men arguing in the busy Palmerah Selatan street, followed by the pistol-wielding army man hitting the motorcyclist several times.

Pandji said the pistol carried by Captain A was a toy gun or an airsoft gun.

“We have the evidence. Still, if proven guilty he will be punished. Even though it was a mere toy gun, it has scared people,” he noted.

Pandji said the incident on Monday afternoon was triggered by competition over a lane change and not because Captain A`s military car was bruised by the two-wheeler.

“It happened while Captain A was on the way to Soekarno-Hatta airport to pick up his mother who was suffering from a heart problem. On Jalan Gelora I, Tanah Abang, a motorcyclist who thought his lane had been taken, angrily stopped Captain A`s car with plate number 1394-00 and a military symbol.

Captain A got out of the car and asked if there was any damage to his motorcycle. The motorcyclist then asked Captain A not to be arrogant as a military man,” he explained the chronology of the incident.

Just when Captain A returned to his car after ensuring that no damage had been done, the motorcyclist kicked the car door. This made Captain A get out of the car again, with an airsoft gun and an iron bar.

Pandji deplored Captain A`s behaviour, saying that the army man should have controlled his temper. In that context, he appealed to all army members to be disciplined when driving cars and not to violate traffic regulations.

“We must respect traffic police. The public must also follow traffic rules,” Pandji said.

It happens because golfing activity has become a hobby for them,” said the officer of Destination Division of the Indonesia Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) of Bali, Gusti Kompyang Aya, in Denpasar.

He said that some countries in Asia were now facing a booming in golfing activities. Even, many of them were tourists belonging to middle to upper class that intentionally came to Bali just to play golf. Potential of golf tourism was in a great demand by foreign tourists, including the golfers who were participating in the meeting, incentive, conference, and exhibition (MICE) activities.

“Different from Japanese tourists over 6o years of age, they are no longer simply to play golf, but also more focused to know

the heritages retaining historical values in Bali. Meanwhile, some others also want to enjoy the beauty of Bali or honeymoon for the newly-wed couple,” he explained.

Despite golf tourism had become an attraction to Japanese tourists, but the recent global crisis and tsunami disaster sweeping the country had caused their coming to decline drastically.

“During the crisis, Japanese companies diminished their employees. Before resolving the crisis, Japan was even hit by tsunami.

As consequence, it caused a decrease in the number of tourist visit to Bali,” he said.

The Head of Bali Government Tourism Office, IB Subhiksu, also acknowledged that Japanese tourist visit to Bali every year declined by 23 percent. Therefore, it was required a smart efforts to increase the number of visits,

“Condition of Japanese market continues to decline. In 2010, the Japanese tourist visit was down 22 percent compared to 2009, while in 2011 the decline reached over 25 percent,” he said.

He further explained the number of tourist visits in 2009 reached 316,473 people, 265,465 people (2010) and only 183,284 people (2011). Previously, the Japanese market was ranked first in 2008, and then dropped to second position in 2009. This dropped again in 2011 to third position after Australia and China.

KUTA - Surfing’s 11-time and current world champion Kelly Slater is joining the effort to help clean up Bali by donating a surf board and offering to give his time and money to turn the tide of the seemingly careless disregard for the environment that has permeated the holiday island.

Slater has been in spending the last few days in Bali surfing and visiting friends in between stops on the ASP World Tour, and was understandably aghast at seeing the large amounts of trash in the water and on the beaches of the previously pristine Bali.

On April 23rd Slater sent out a series of “tweets” from his Twitter account describing his concern for Bali’s pollution problems that not only went out to his almost 200,000 followers it was also “re-tweeted” and has by now reached hundreds of thousands more in the surf industry and the international media, notably in Austraila, Bali’s largest tourist market.

In an effort to focus more attention on the issue and create a stimulus to stir direct action, Slater has offered up one of his surfboards for bidding as a start, saying he will match the funds from the sale of the board as well as give of his time to motivate people into action to help stem the tide of this rampant pollution problem. Quiksilver Indonesia has taken Slater up on his offer and will be accepting bids on Ebay.

“How ever I can get engaged to help out to at least educate and spread the word to help motivate the people who know how to do the right thing to start creating some change here, I’m happy to do that,” said Slater.

“Giving a board is something simple but giving some time is something I’d feel really good about. The board is a start and if it’s going to raise some funds, I’ll match the funds with whatever the board raises… I’ll match that myself.”

He went on to add, “I think this issue is much bigger than just the surf community, obviously there’s some infrastructure that needs to be put in place in Bali and this part of the world to do something with the waste rather than put it in the ocean.

As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter.

However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the

Fry the mixture in a dry pan over medium/low heat, constantly stirred for approximately 5 minutes, or until the mixture is dry.

Remove the cinnamon stick, and set it aside.

Ingredients * Pancake 1 cup rice flour * ½ cup cornstarch * 1¾ cups coconut milk * ½ tsp. salt * 1 egg, beaten * 3 drops green food coloring (optional) * Vegetable oil Directions Pancake: Mix the rice flour, cornstarch, coconut milk, ½ tsp. salt, green food coloring and egg into a smooth batter.

Lightly oil an 8-inch frying pan, and pour 3 tablespoon of the batter into the pan. Make sure the pan is equally covered with the batter so it becomes a thin layer pancake. Fry for one minute, turn the pancake over and fry for another minute. Remove and set aside.

Tulamben is one of popular dive site in Bali and located in East Bali. its about 2 and half hours driver from Nusa Dua and Kuta area.

Tulamben is beach entry dive and

the ship as the dive site is about 40 meters from the beach. The American ship USAT Liberty built in 1915 and was destroyed by Japanese submarine on Jan 11, 1942 (World War II). It sank on sand floor at depth of 5 meters and slope down to max depth of 35 meters. Night diving on this ship wreck is very popular.

Bali’s best wreck dive with bumphead parrot fish, napoleon wrasse and barracuda are regularly spotted around the wreck. Beside Ship Wreck, Tulamben also have many good sites for dive like: Tulamben Drop Off, Coral Garden, etc.

- Amed Diving

Amed is located in East Bali, Karangasem Regency and it’s about 2 hours and 45 minutes from Denpasar or Kuta Area and then need more about 5 minutes to Amed dive site. Coral grow 2 meters and slope down to 30 meters. Napoleon wrasses and Reef Sharks often seen in Amed water. Along the wall you will find beautiful and colorful corals (hard and soft) and a breeding area with thousands of small fish. The maximum depth is +/- 26 m. Sometimes there can be a current. Amed is also good site for night dive. Dive Amed area: Jemeluk, Bunutan, Japanese shipwreck and Gili Selang.

Jakarta road ‘jockeys’ help motorists skirt the rules Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Jakarta’s carpooling laws were meant to ease traffic jams. Instead, they have spawned an industry of professional hitchhikers who help drivers comply with highway rules -- for a fee.

Hundreds of men, women and children line the main arteries of the Indonesian capital every weekday, offering to ride in private vehicles during rush hours, when cars are obliged to carry at least three passengers on key stretches.

The “jockeys” -- as they are known -- do not stick out their thumbs like typical hitchhikers around the world. Here, one finger signifies a jockey working solo, while two offers a pair, usually a mother with a child in tow or a baby in a batik sling.

In a country where millions are struggling to climb out of poverty and into an expanding middle class the jockeys -- who charge about a dollar a ride -- have turned their services into a career.

Jimmy, 22, has jockeying down to a fine art. In the hodgepodge of roadside competitors waiting for a ride, he stands out with his silver-rimmed spectacles and blue chequered shirt tucked neatly into a pair of black trousers.

“Chauffeurs in BMWs and Mercedes cars often pick me up because I can pass off as their employer’s

Cars picking up jockeys can face fines of up to one million rupiah ($109). But in a country where official corruption is rife, a 200,000 rupiah bribe is usually enough to get off the hook.

“Generally, nobody wants to get stuck in a jam with someone with smelly armpits. For my efforts, I ask for an extra 5,000 rupiah (54 cents) and I usually get it,” Jimmy said.

JAKARTA - A coalition of green groups in Indonesia on Thursday criticised a moratorium on deforestation as “weak”, saying the year-long ban still excludes large tracts of the country’s carbon-rich forests.

Greenpeace, which is leading the coalition, said government maps that mark protected areas exclude 3.5 million hectares (8.6 million acres) of peatland -- biodiverse swamp-like forests that hold rich carbon reserves.

Greenpeace said the government must review all existing logging permits on the country’s natural forests and peatland, and improve governance based on an accurate set of maps.

“The government cannot hope to improve forest governance and ensure the effectiveness of the moratorium without taking these crucial steps,” Greenpeace Southeast Asia political campaigner Yuyun Indradi said in a statement.

An earlier review of the maps by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that the moratorium leaves almost 50 percent of

Indonesia’s 100 million hectares of natural forest and peatland unprotected.

“The current moratorium is weak and does very little in effect to protect the forests,” said Deddy Ratih, a forest campaign manager for Friends of the Earth Indonesia.

The two-year moratorium came into effect last year as the centrepiece of a deal with Norway, which pledged $1 billion to Indonesia under a UN-backed scheme to reduce emissions from deforestation.

That deal was part of a larger commitment made by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2009 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from levels that year by 26 percent by 2020, or 41 percent with international support.

The coalition charged that the moratorium -- which was originally supposed to include all natural forests -- had been watered down to protect just older primary forests and peatland because of pressure from big business.

Indonesia is often cited as the world’s third-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, due mainly to rampant deforestation by the palm oil, mining and paper industries.

Army assures that violent member will be punished

JAKARTA - The army confirmed that the man committing violence in a video that went viral through YouTube recently was its member.

“That is true. The man is our member.

Right now, his case is still being processed by the Jakarta Military Police. He will be given a sanction according to the regulation,” army spokesman Brigadier General Pandji Sukho Hari Judho said here on Wednesday.

He stated that the man was an army captain, identified by his initial of A, and he would certainly be punished.

The video titled “Cowboy in Palmerah” has gone viral through YouTube and also been broadcast nationwide by national television stations. The two-minute video clip uploaded by “UnpluggedTheTV” shows two men arguing in the busy Palmerah Selatan street, followed by the pistol-wielding army man hitting the motorcyclist several times.

Pandji said the pistol carried by Captain A was a toy gun or an airsoft gun.

“We have the evidence. Still, if proven guilty he will be punished. Even though it was a mere toy gun, it has scared people,” he noted.

Pandji said the incident on Monday afternoon was triggered by competition over a lane change and not because Captain A`s military car was bruised by the two-wheeler.

“It happened while Captain A was on the way to Soekarno-Hatta airport to pick up his mother who was suffering from a heart problem. On Jalan Gelora I, Tanah Abang, a motorcyclist who thought his lane had been taken, angrily stopped Captain A`s car with plate number 1394-00 and a military symbol.

Captain A got out of the car and asked if there was any damage to his motorcycle. The motorcyclist then asked Captain A not to be arrogant as a military man,” he explained the chronology of the incident.

Just when Captain A returned to his car after ensuring that no damage had been done, the motorcyclist kicked the car door. This made Captain A get out of the car again, with an airsoft gun and an iron bar.

Pandji deplored Captain A`s behaviour, saying that the army man should have controlled his temper. In that context, he appealed to all army members to be disciplined when driving cars and not to violate traffic regulations.

“We must respect traffic police. The public must also follow traffic rules,” Pandji said.

BEIRUT - Syrian rebels killed 15 members of the security forces in an ambush on Wednesday, a monitoring group said, and a human rights organization accused Damascus of war crimes in last month’s run-up to a U.N.-brokered truce. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has been tracking the 14-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, said two rebel militiamen also died in clashes that followed the ambush in the northern province of Aleppo.

State media carried no news of the attack, the latest in a series of heavy losses inflicted on proAssad forces in the last week by some of the disparate militias fighting for his downfall.

Twelve soldiers died in a firefight in the eastern town of Deir al-Zor on Tuesday, the Observatory said, and nine people, including security officials, died in twin suicide bombs in the restive town of Idlib on Monday, according to state media. The United Nations says Syrian forces have killed 9,000 people in a violent crackdown on mass protests that started against Assad in March 2011. The initially peaceful demonstrations have since turned into a bloody guerrilla insurgency.

Damascus says 2,600 personnel have been killed by “armed terrorists”. Since a U.N.-backed ceasefire came into effect on April 12, it has cited rebel assaults as justification of its right to respond to “any violation or attack”.

BEIJING — U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urged Beijing to let its tightly controlled currency strengthen and improve market access amid trade strains at a high-level economic dialogue Thursday.

Beijing has allowed the yuan to rise gradually but Washington and other trading partners complain it still is undervalued, giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage and hurting foreign competitors. Some American lawmakers are calling for punitive tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing fails to act faster.

This week’s talks, overshadowed by a diplomatic tussle over a blind Chinese legal activist, come as a weak global economy and pressure on governments of developed countries to reduce unemployment are fueling trade complaints against China.

Washington considers “particularly important” the promise of a stronger yuan in China’s latest five-year economic development plan, Geithner said in prepared remarks for the opening of the two days of talks.

In more pointed language last month, Geithner complained an undervalued yuan was a source of “unfair competition.” He called for a “stronger, more market-determined” exchange rate and said that would help the global economy.

Chinese officials have said that

future gains by the yuan are likely to be limited, setting up a possible clash with Washington. Premier Wen Jiabao said in March the currency might have reached an “equilibrium exchange rate.”

Washington welcomes Beijing’s move last month to widen the daily trading band within which the yuan is allowed to fluctuate from 0.5 percent to 1 percent but thinks it fails to go far enough to create a market-driven exchange rate, according to a senior administration official with Geithner’s delegation.

U.S. officials also pressed China to create a more “level playing field” for foreign companies by removing import barriers, said the official, who briefed reporters about the talks on condition of anonymity.

The United States reported its trade deficit with China reached an all-time high of $295.5 billion last year, up 8.2 percent from 2010’s previous record.

The U.S. Commerce Department announced last month it would impose new import fees on Chinesemade solar panels after concluding

manufacturers received improper subsidies. Chinese authorities announced their own probe in November into whether U.S. support for renewable energy companies hurts foreign suppliers.

China’s envoy to the economic talks, Vice Premier Wang Qishan, called on Washington to ease controls on exports of high-tech goods. Such controls are imposed on “dual-use” goods such as supercomputers with possible military applications.

Talks were continuing on loosening export restrictions and smoothing the way for more Chinese investment in the United States, according to the U.S. official.

“The global economic recovery remains sluggish and the situation is grim and complicated,” Wang said.

Geithner expressed support for China’s plans to overhaul its financial system to increase support for private enterprise and reduce special treatment for state-owned companies. He said the plans reflect Beijing’s recognition that it has to rely more on private sector innovation and allow more competition from foreign companies.

FRANKFURT - Deutsche Lufthansa , Germany’s biggest airline, announced plans to slash 3,500 administrative jobs around the world as it tries to return to profitability.

“We can only safeguard jobs for the long term and create new openings if we reorganize the administrative functions and accept job losses now,” Chief Executive Christoph Franz said in a statement on Thursday.

Lufthansa fared better in the global economic crisis than peers such as Air France-KLM and British Airways , but Franz, who took the job at the start of last year, has said the airline needs to radically cut costs to remain competitive.

He has vowed to improve results by 1.5 billion euros ($2.0 billion) by the end of 2014 as margins are squeezed by high fuel prices, a weak European economy and fierce competition from low-cost carriers and Middle East airlines.

Lufthansa, which has a workforce of about 117,000 people worldwide, said one third of the savings is to come from reducing staff costs. Other measures include closer cooperation between its main Lufthansa brand and its low-cost carrier Germanwings and bundling some purchasing.

The news comes a day after Lufthansa reported a first-quarter operating loss that more than doubled to 381 million euros, missing a consensus forecast of a 289 million euro loss.

It still sees 2012 operating profit declining to a figure in the mid-hundreds of millions of euros, which excludes possible costs related to the cost-cutting program.

Shares in Lufthansa fell in early trading and were down 2.07 percent at 9.70 euros at 0703 GMT.

ECB to hold fire on growth steps in crisis-hit Spain Reuters

FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank will resist pressure to do more to fight the euro zone crisis when it meets in Barcelona on Thursday, holding fire despite calls to restart its bond-buying program to help austerity-hit Spain.

Financial markets are clamoring for the ECB to step up its efforts to fight the two-year crisis by buying the sovereign bonds of Spain, which is in recession and is struggling to convince some of its people of the need for further austerity.

But ECB policymakers, who will face demonstrators protesting against Spain’s harsh austerity measures in the Catalonian capital, are more likely to pay homage to the country’s drive to cut costs than to signal any new policy action like restarting the bond-buy program, or Securities Markets Programme (SMP).

The bank has left the plan dormant for the last seven weeks despite a rise in Spanish yields to 6 percent. A break above that, to 7 percent, is considered an unsustainable price to pay for refinancing its debt.

“I think the reactivation of the SMP will occur only at a point at which the situation has deteriorated significantly and I think the pressure would have to be greater than that we’ve seen in recent weeks,” said RBS economist Nick Matthews.

The ECB will almost certainly leave its main interest rate on hold at a record low of 1 percent, though markets will be listening for any hint that the bank could be ready to cut later this year if the euro zone economy deteriorates further. ECB President Mario Draghi faces resistance from Germany’s powerful Bundesbank to any potential interest rate cut or a reactivation of the bond-buy programme, which the central bank could use to lower Spanish bond yields.

“The euro crisis has not escalated to such an extent recently that he would want to take on the Bundesbank on that,” Berenberg Bank economist Holger Schmieding said of the bond-buy programme.

Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann told Reuters last month Spain should take the rise in its bond yields as a spur to tackle the root causes of its debt woes and not look to the ECB to help by buying its bonds.

LOS ANGELES — After popping up in cameos during the credits of Marvel films as the authoritative, eye-patch-wearing Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson steps fully into his role as the head of peacekeeping agency S.H.I.E.L.D. in “The Avengers.”

He assembles the super-crew of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, the Incredible Hulk and Hawkeye as part of his “Avengers Initiative” to help fight Thor’s brother, Loki, who threatens to wipe out humanity. The film hits U.S. theaters Friday.

“It’s great to stand there and look around and go OK, these guys are actually here so we do have the Avengers,” Jackson said during a recent interview. “(Director and writer) Joss (Whedon) is so savvy about the genre and how to flesh characters out so it’s not just a set piece fest of stuff blowing up and people chasing each other... There’s sadness, there’s joy, there’s fear, there’s all this stuff that goes into making this film that makes it sort of special, way more special than it could have been.”

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Sarkozy fails to floor Hollande in French vote duel PARIS - French President Nicolas Sarkozy made a last-ditch appeal to far-right voters on Thursday after failing to land a knockout blow in a heated televised debate with Socialist rival Francois Hollande before Sunday’s decisive runoff.

Front in the April 22 first round. “The opinion polls are lying. An election has never been this open ... It’s even more open after the debate,” Sarkozy told RTL radio.

“I want to speak directly to National Front voters. Who would benefit if you cast a blank vote? It would benefit Hollande, the regularization of (illegal) immigrants, crazy overspending.”

Television commentators said Sarkozy had performed “like a boxer” in Wednesday’s debate and Hollande “like a judo fighter”, using flashes of wit and interjections to unbalance his rival.

“Hollande presides over the debate,” left-wing Liberation wrote on its front page, while the right-leaning Le Figaro, with a headline “High Tension”, emphasized the bitterness of the exchanges. It noted that every euro zone leader to seek re-election since 2008 had lost, but said divisions in the French left and Hollande’s outdated policies gave Sarkozy a chance.

WASHINGTON — The world will soon be able to read the last words of Osama bin Laden as he struggled to command the attention of his far-flung terror network.

A selection of documents seized in last year’s raid on bin Laden’s house in Pakistan will be posted online Thursday by the Army’s Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy.

The correspondence shows a leader revered but sometimes ignored by field commanders, who dismissed him as out of touch even as he urged them to keep attacking U.S. targets.

White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan said this week that bin Laden’s own words confirm that America is safer with him gone. Brennan says bin Laden wrote of his worries that his leaders were being killed so quickly the group would not survive.

BEIJING — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told China on Thursday that it must protect human rights, in remarks that rejected Beijing’s criticism of the U.S. for getting involved in the case of a blind dissident whose fate overshadowed the opening of annual talks between the powerful countries.

Clinton said at the opening of the talks on foreign policy and economic issues that the U.S. believes “all governments have to answer our citizens’ aspirations for dignity and the rule of law and that no nation can or should deny those rights.”

Her comments came as the dissident, Chen Guangcheng, pleaded for more help from Washington. The blind, selftaught lawyer took refuge in the U.S. Embassy after escaping house arrest, but left Wednesday to get treatment for a leg injury at a Beijing hospital. He initially said he had been assured that he would be safe in China, but hours later he said he fears for his family’s safety unless they are all spirited abroad.

China already demanded an apology from the U.S. even before Chen balked at a deal in which he would remain in his homeland. Now that he wants to leave, the case is looming over talks in which Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner are to discuss foreign policy and economic issues with their Chinese counterparts.

China’s President Hu Jintao said at the opening of the talks that China and the United States “must know how to respect each other” even if they disagree.

“Given our different national conditions, it is impossible for both China and the United States to see eye to eye on every issue,” he said in the only part of the opening ceremony that was broadcast on state television. “We should properly manage the differences by improving mutual understanding so these differences will not undermine the larger interests of China-U.S. relations.”

Neither Hu nor Clinton specifically mentioned Chen, who had spent six days holed up in the U.S. Embassy as senior officials in Beijing and Washington tussled over his fate. A shaken Chen told The Associated Press from his hospital room Wednesday that Chinese authorities had warned he would lose his opportunity to be reunited with his family if he stayed longer in the embassy.

U.S. officials verified that account. But they adamantly

denied his contention that one American diplomat had warned him of a threat from the Chinese that his wife would be beaten to death if he did not get out of the embassy.

They also denied his claim that American officials have left the hospital where he is being treated for a leg injury suffered in his escape.

“I think we’d like to rest in a place outside of China,” Chen told the AP, appealing again for help from Washington. “Help my family and me leave safely.”

Only hours earlier, U.S. officials said they had extracted from the Chinese government a promise that Chen would join his family and be allowed to start a new life in a university town in China, safe from the rural authorities who had abusively held him in prison and house arrest for nearly seven years.

NEW YORK — Four months ago the U.S. government sought to block publication of two studies about how scientists created an easily spread form of bird flu. Now a revised version of one paper is seeing the light of day with the government’s blessing. The revision appears online Wednesday in the journal Nature.

It’s the near-conclusion to a drama that pit efforts to learn how to thwart a global flu epidemic against concerns about helping terrorists create bioweapons. The second paper, which is more controversial because it involves what appears to be a more dangerous virus, is expected to be published later in the journal Science.

For some experts, the affair

underscores a more basic question about whether creating potentially risky versions of bird flu is a good idea.

“Clearly, research like this can be beneficial” for dealing with the bird-flu threat, said Dr. Eric Toner of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s biosecurity center.

But there’s the question of calculating risk versus benefit, he said.

“If we’re taking a highly lethal virus and making it more transmissible, it’s a tough judgment... These sorts of decisions should be made in advance of the research being done, not when the papers are ready for publication.”

The bird flu that has spread among poultry in Asia for several years now can be deadly, but it rarely sickens people. And people generally catch it from chickens and ducks, not from other people.

Scientists have worried that as virus strains mix in nature, they could produce a deadly bird flu that transmits easily from one person to another. That could set the stage for a flu pandemic.

A new ancient fish with a sharklike tail discovered in Canada was a fast-moving, aggressive predator, quite unlike its sluggish relatives today.

Today’s coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) is famous for being a “living fossil.” Researchers thought these large, paddle-tailed fish had gone extinct during the Cretaceous period — until a fisherman caught a living coelacanth off the east coast of South Africa in 1938.

Modern coelacanths, and most fossilized species, are slow moving, “lay-in-wait” type of predators, according to study researcher Mark Wilson, a paleontologist at the University of Alberta in Canada. But the new specimen, dubbed Rebellatrix divaricerca, had a forked tail, much like today’s tuna or sharks.

“Fish with forked tails are able to achieve higher speeds and sustain them over a greater period of time,” study researcher Andrew Wendruff, also of the University of Alberta, wrote in an email to LiveScience.

“The forked tail of Rebellatrix indicated that it was a fast-moving, aggressive predator.” No other coelacanth in the fossil record sports a forked tail, Wendruff said.

Rebellatrix “shatters the commonly held notion that coelacanths

were an evolutionarily stagnant group in that their body shape and lifestyle changed little since the origin of the group,” he said. “Rebellatrix is dramatically different than anything previously known.”

For all its evolutionary audacity, Rebellatrix was likely a “spectacular failure in the evolution of cruising predation,” Wendruff said. The fish evolved after the Permian mass extinction, which occurred about 252 million years ago and killed off more than 90 percent of all marine species.

It likely filled a niche vacated by the mass extinction, Wendruff said, but this honeymoon period didn’t seem to last long. There is no record of Rebellatrix or its descendents in the later fossil record.

The researchers discovered several fossilized Rebellatrix specimens and fragments in and around Wapiti Lake Provincial Park in British Columbia. They acquired another specimen, also found in the park, from a collector who had owned it since the 1950s. At the time the fish was alive, the park area would have been an ocean off the west coast of the supercontinent Pangaea. The fish was about 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) long with a slender body and the thick fins still seen on coelacanths today.

HELSINKI/LONDON - Nokia’s outgoing Chairman Jorma Ollila promised a range of new products ahead of a meeting on Thursday with shareholders who are increasingly losing patience with the company’s recovery efforts. In an interview published on Thursday, Ollila told the Financial Times the Finnish company would launch a range of tablets and “hybrid” smart mobile devices, but did not say when.

Ollila, who will step down at the meeting after 27 years with the

company, told the Financial Times that Nokia had been too slow at the start of the smartphone revolution, but said the combination of new products and Nokia services would help.

Nokia is widely expected to unveil its first tablet computer later this year when Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system becomes available.

“Nokia’s fate in tablets is directly linked to Microsoft, which also has to succeed in this space,” said Pohjola analyst Hannu Rauhala.

Nokia has lost out to Apple Inc and Google Inc in the smartphone

business and is now pinning hopes of a turnaround on Lumia, a new range of smartphones which use Microsoft software.

Once hailed as a national hero in Finland for transforming Nokia from a toilet paper-to-rubber boots conglomerate to the world’s No 1 cellphone maker in 1998, Ollila has since come under criticism for neglecting the emergence of smartphones.

“Tablets are an important one, so that is being looked into, and there will be different hybrids, different form factors in the future,” he said.

LONDON - Either Fernando Torres of Chelsea or Andy Carroll of Liverpool, who have both hugely under-achieved since their record-breaking transfers last year, will claim one of English soccer’s major prizes when their teams meet in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Torres, at least, has recently shown glimpses of why Chelsea paid 50 million pounds ($81.10 million) to Liverpool for him in January last year - a record fee between British clubs.

The Spaniard has scored four goals in his last three games, including last week’s solo effort at Barcelona which sealed Chelsea’s place in the Champions League final on May 19. He also scored his first hat-trick for Chelsea in their 6-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday but failed to hit the net in Wednesday’s 2-0 home defeat by Newcastle United and in total has scored only 12 times for Chelsea.

Carroll became the most expensive British player of all time when Liverpool paid Newcastle United 35 million pounds for him to replace Torres, but has scored only 11 goals in 54 matches for Liverpool since.

At least his late header against Everton in the semi-final at Wembley three weeks ago guaranteed Liverpool a return to the London stadium for the final.

Now the two strikers, both dropped from their national sides and both remarkably unproductive in front of goal, have the chance of lasting redemption and a place in their club’s folklore as an FA Cup winner.

Despite the focus on the Premier League, and a late kickoff (1615 GMT) for this year’s final rather than its traditional 1500 start, the FA Cup is still one of soccer’s grand occasions.

The match is being shown live to a huge global audience in more than 120 countries and, as everyone in football never tires of saying, the money is all very well but winning silverware is what matters.

Liverpool have already picked up a trophy this season with a win over Cardiff City on penalties in the League Cup final in February.

Their league form though, has been erratic and continued to disappoint on Tuesday when a side showing nine changes from the previous game lost 1-0 at Anfield to Fulham - the first time Fulham had won a match there in 30 attempts over 78 years.

ROTTERDAM - Ajax Amsterdam coach Frank de Boer completed the most difficult job of his career on Wednesday when he led the club to a 31st Dutch title, overcoming a number of obstacles to end a turbulent season on a high. De Boer led Ajax to last season’s title after taking over from the sacked Martin Jol in 2010 but his chances of a repeat success were undermined when club legend Johan Cruyff became involved in a bitter and unsettling boardroom dispute.

The side’s pre-season targets of a successful title defence and to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League looked doomed to fail when a run of five domestic matches without a victory left them well off the pace in the league standings. Ajax failed to achieve their Champions League goal and the internal power struggle intensified in February when the other members of the five-man board of commissioners appointed Louis van Gaal as the new club director behind Cruyff’s back.

“That was not a pleasant period as the club was divided into two groups and several people acted strangely and were avoiding their rivals,” De Boer was quoted as saying in Dutch weekly Voetbal International. “For me, it felt like I had to choose between a son and a daughter in opting to take the side of either Cruyff or Van Gaal.”

The dispute was resolved on Feb. 7 when an Amsterdam court decreed that Van Gaal could not be appointed as director. “I supported Cruyff publicly as he had asked me to and I also agree with his technical and tactical blueprint for the club,” De Boer added.

“I was also disappointed in Louis van Gaal as he had kept Cruyff in the dark when he was appointed.” As the dust was settling on the boardroom dispute, Ajax had slipped to sixth position, eight points adrift of PSV Eindhoven, Twente Enschede and AZ Alkmaar, who were all vying for top spot.

However, two days after the court decision had eased the situation and mood at the club, Ajax embarked on a run of 13 straight wins which fired them to the top of the league. “At that moment, we were in a very poor phase, we played bad and had several injured

players,” De Boer recalled.

“I remained positive and told my squad that our goal should be to win the seven matches before we faced PSV and to make that clash our cup final. “That match (2-0 win) gave me the most satisfaction, the result was good but the way we played was close to perfection.

Our positional play was great and we pressurised our opponents as a complete team.”

For De Boer, who won his seventh title with Ajax (five as player), the goals for next season are once again to defend their title and survive the Champions League group stage.

His task will be made that much harder with skipper Jan Vertonghen and rightback Gregory van der Wiel both attracting attention from a number of Europe’s bigger leagues with expected bids for their services likely to test their loyalty.

Batur caldera tourism included in GGN of UNESCO Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Batur caldera tourism area of Bangli is targeted to be included in the part of Global Geopark Network (GGN) of the UNESCO in 2012. This determination is ascertained to have a positive impact on the increase in tourist arrivals to Bali in the coming years.

It was revealed by the Head of Bali Cultural Agency in Denpasar, I Ketut Suastika, Thursday (May 2). Aside from the caldera geopark of Mount Batur, some areas in Bali had also been registered to become a part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage, including the strip of Pakerisan River, Tirta Empul, Gunung Kawi in Ubud and Jatiluwih along with its subak system in Tabanan.

“Hopefully, this can be entered into the world cultural heritage by UNESCO. As a result, it will surely be able to uplift the economy of the surrounding area. Let’s wait for the announcement this year,” he said.

Director General of Tourism Destination Development, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Firmansyah Rahim, also admitted the determination of Batur by UNESCO should have been done this year. Apparently, there were some drawbacks, including the management, but it had been repaired accordingly.

“Arrangement efforts are now ongoing while waiting for the stipulation by

UNESCO,” he said.

Firmansyah Rahim mentioned that government initially proposed the area of Pacitan and Mount Batur to UNESCO as a Geopark.

However, this year only the area of Batur caldera was nominated. UNESCO would announce the establishment of Lake Batur area as one of the World Geoparks in September 2012.

For information, on May 10-17, the Regent of Bangli and Directorate General of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy would go to Japan to attend a session in conjunction with the determination of geopark. Feasibility of Batur caldera was ready to be judged as part of global geopark network.

On that account, the Batur Caldera Geopark was expected to be entered into the big family of Global Geopark Network. Batur Geopark was considered to have special potential of geological heritage, namely inter-relation of geology to cultural heritage, volcano to local culture as well as volcano to local farming. Gilimanuk Bay Polluted by Solar Gilimanuk Bay is a tourism beach located at the very west end of Bali now threatened. It is since the waters along the coast are now polluted with solar. Aside from solar the beach is also filled with bunch of plastic wastes from Gilimanuk Port.

“The waters of Gilimanuk bay has been polluted since Saturday, the solar we suspected came from the tanker ship and Gilimanuk crossing ship,” explained Putu Agung Alit Wirawan on Monday. Wirawan also added that due to the solar pollution has caused living ecosystem under the sea died.

Irrigation canal of Subak Tamblang damaged Farmers struggle for water Negara (Bali Post)—

Many irrigation canals of Subak Tamblang, Jembrana have been damaged. The irrigation canal passing through two villages, namely Batuagung and Dangin Tukadaya village, cannot now function optimally. Based on observation on Wednesday (May 2), the irrigation canal was damaged at some points presumably due to getting eroded by water. As a result, the water then got wasted in vain and could not stream down into farmers’ rice fields. Similarly, farmers located in downstream area often complained as they did not get water. They consequently struggled for water.

Many water flows from the main canal in the dam of Tukadaya River had been buried in the ground because the water canal passed around the neighborhood of residents. As consequence, the water could not stream down smoothly. Besides, the land of residents over the irrigation canal appeared to have been eroded.

It occurred because a lot of barriers or abutments of the canal had been damaged. One of the residents of Anyar hamlet, Batu

Agung, IB Awan, said the damage to a number of abutments originally happened to a small part. However, since it was long neglected the water then overflowed and the abutment at some points had been damaged. Estimated, the abutment located near the settlement was damaged along 100 meters.

Another resident, Agung Alit, said that such condition had occurred for a year. Since many canals were broken then the water could not be accommodated and streamed down to other places like to the garden of residents and other canals. When it rained, the water overflowed from the canal onto the street. As a result, some subak members often struggled for water.

Luckily, at the moment the paddy plants of farmers in the subak territory only required little water because they would be going to enter harvest time. However, in the upcoming planting season they would have difficulty to obtain water. Other than Subak Tamblang, the water also streamed down to Subak Tegalwani and other subak territories in downstream area. Melasti in Tanah Lot, a Stunning Attraction to Visitors

Classroom damaged, primary school students learn on terrace floor Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Amid the National Education Day, there remained a bleak portrait of education in Tabanan. Such condition was experienced by the students of SDN 2 Senganan primary school, Penebel, Wednesday (May 2). Since the classroom was damaged, they were forced to study at local school terrace floor. The condition had been taking place for long time.

The students studying on the terrace floor belonged to grade 2 amounting to 12 students. Such a measure had to be done because the existing classrooms were unable to accommodate the learning activities. Besides, condition of the building was not feasible to do so. They came into classroom around 09:00 a.m. local time. While waiting for the empty classroom used by grade 1, they held a school lesson on the terrace. Without a single covering, the students were sitting and listening attentively to the lessons from their teacher, as well as working on the tasks given. Learning process on the terrace lasted for about an hour. Then, at 10.00 a.m., they came into classroom after the grade 1 went home. “Well, we do not what to do, our classroom is indeed inadequate. Many classrooms have been damaged, so that they cannot be entirely used,” said Principal of SDN 2 Senganan, Ni Made Sulasmi.

This woman said the total existing classrooms actually could accommodate all students. However, among the six classrooms, only three could be

feasibly used. Meanwhile, the other classrooms including the principal room had been shambles and almost collapsed. Condition of the classrooms alternately used by grade 1 and 2 had also been miserable. However, they were better than the other defective classrooms. Tiled roof had perforated and fallen. Meanwhile, all the buffering timber had been fragile, too.

More miserably, the classrooms were not only damaged. The school located in remote area also lacked of teaching staff. Total teaching and administration staff amounted to 9 people. The teachers with status as civil servant, including school principal, were only 4 people, while the remaining three staff consisted of three teachers of religion and 2 volunteer teachers as well as a teacher with official memorandum.

“We only have one classroom teacher. So, it should teach alternately,” complained Sulasmi. She told to have submitted the repair proposal of the school building for several times, including the addition of teachers.

Unfortunately, until this moment the result was nothing. Even, since last January, one of the classroom teachers was mutated to another school. If there was no immediate repair, her party had planned to separate some classrooms by installing partition because the damaged classrooms were impossible to be used. Her party worried the roof would collapse if used forcibly.

The Head of Tabanan Education Agency, Putu Santika, asserted the issue of classroom building of SDN 2 Senganan was still waiting for the proposal submitted to central government. However, if it would not get response this year, his party would allocate a budget through special allocation fund (DAK).

“We have met the figures of Senganan residents. The school buildings will be relocated and the land has been ready,” he said. According to Santika, the new building got special attention. Hopefully, the new building could be constructed immediately so as not to harm and endanger the students. (kmb30)

Melasti procession becomes a prominent tourist attraction.] Melasti procession of the Beraban customary villagers in conjunction with the Nyepi or Day of Silence on Tuesday (Mar 20) was held grandiosely. It was a purification ceremony for the macrocosm and microcosm by the Hindus in Bali. The procession was followed by devotees from 44 temples existing at villages in the region and 5 barong effigies were carried.

Beraban is the customary village having responsibility for the existence of Tanah Lot tourist object.

Such procession involved thousands of people wearing traditional Balinese costumes. As a result, the road section in the north of Beraban customary village to Tanah Lot was closed temporarily. By all means, all the tourists at Tanah Lot were unable to leave the Tanah Lot tourist object. On the contrary, visitors who would like to visit the Tanah Lot were unable to go to the destination before the procession came to an end.

Interestingly, the delay to leave Tanah Lot due to traffic congestion at the object even brought in an unpredictable pleasure.

For that spraying was intensified at bird markets and traditional markets also in the border of the city. As seen last Wednesday (2/5) the team involving the Agency, Peace and Order Agency also Transportation Agency, stopped any carrying vehicles containing bids at IB Mantra By Pass, Denpasar, where the hundreds of birds came from Bangli, Karangasem, Gianyar and Klungkung.

Astriawati suggested the people who has birds to clean their birds waste with soap water. Besides that their birds should be placed on the sun as the virus can’t stand the sun. “If any of them died suddenly has to be reported. If all the people understands , I’m sure the virus will be avoided,” Astriwati stated.

Spurs blow out Jazz 114-83 to take 2-0 lead Associated Press Writer

SAN ANTONIO — Tony Parker shooed away the NBA coach of the year. The San Antonio Spurs were ahead 36 points and he didn’t want Gregg Popovich to end his night just yet.

“To stay in shape,” Parker said.

That’s how bad it got for the Utah Jazz. It was the third quarter of a playoff game, and Parker by then was practically treating it as just another workout.

Pummeling the Jazz in a fashion not seen since Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls humiliated them in the 1998 NBA Finals, San Antonio handed Utah its second-worst playoff loss, winning 114-83 on Wednesday night to take 2-0 lead in the first-round series.

Parker scored 18 points, while Popovich — a day after receiving the NBA’s highest coaching honor — could practically put the Spurs on autopilot after a 20-0 run in the second quarter. Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin had admitted to being unusually jittery before losing Game 1, but this time, it was center Al Jefferson summing up how this shiner felt.

“Embarrassing,” he said.

The only bigger embarrassment for the Jazz in the playoffs was that 42point loss to Jordan’s Bulls in 1998.

Game 3 is Saturday night in Salt Lake City.

It’s the first time the Spurs have led a series 2-0 since opening the 2008 playoffs against Phoenix. San Antonio won that series in five, and unless the Jazz can shake this off, this one will be over just as quick.

If not sooner.

“I can’t explain it. I couldn’t explain it the other night,” Jazz forward Paul Millsap said. “They came out and just whipped us.”

It was a total collapse by the Jazz in spite of flying back to Salt Lake City after Game 1 and regrouping with two days of practice back home. There they had talked about adjustments and maybe giving Parker “a hard foul or two” to get him thinking twice about driving, but Parker didn’t seem to have a dent on him before taking the entire fourth quarter off.

Jefferson and Millsap weren’t any more imposing on offense than they were defensively. Jefferson scored 10 points, and Millsap had nine.

Popovich chalked the blowout more to the Jazz having a bad night — they shot 23 percent in the first half — than the Spurs dominating. Parker played 28 minutes and Popovich said the decision on when to take his star out was a struggle between keeping him in condition and not risking injury.

“He wanted to get the whole quarter, but we compromised and got two more minutes,” Popovich said. “He’s been special for us all year, obviously. We got to keep him ready to go.”

The Spurs have won 12 in a row, a season high after surrendering two 11-game winning streaks this season by not playing Parker, Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

Duncan finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Leonard scored 17 points, and Green had 13.

At least the Jazz didn’t look the most embarrassed the entire night. Popovich again had to show off his coach of the year trophy before the game, this time for fans while standing between Duncan and Spurs great David Robinson. Popovich obliged for several seconds before scrambling to hand the trophy off to one of his assistants as fast as possible.

Indonesia’s world featherweight boxing champion Chris John vowed to knock out Japanese challenger Shoji Kimura with the new “dragon fire punch” he claims to have been working on when the two fighters meet this weekend. “I am targetting a KO or at least a TKO (technical knockout) victory against Kimura,” John said ahead of Saturday’s bout at the Marina Bay Sands casino resort in Singapore.

Massa expects Ferrari step in Spain

Felipe Massa has backed team-mate Fernando Alonso’s view that Ferrari will make a good step forward in form at the Spanish Grand Prix - but thinks it too much to expect its updates to help it fight for victory straightaway.

With a number of developments to the F2012 due to be run by Alonso at Mugello on Thursday, Ferrari should get a first indication of exactly how much progress it will be able to make with its car for the start of the European season.

And with Alonso looking at a top five grid slot, Massa reckons that getting both cars inside the top ten is what he is setting his sights on.

“This [both Ferrari’s starting in the top ten at Barcelona] is inside my expectation, but we haven’t tried all the new parts so we need to see in Barcelona how it will be and how much they improve the car,” he said after wrapping up

his testing programme in Italy. “Then we can be more realistic, but it is inside my expectations, definitely.”

Ferrari’s hopes of a step forward very much depend on how much progress it makes over its rivals in delivering more speed from its car – which is why Massa is keeping his ambitions in check.

“To close the gap you need to improve much more than the others and they are working and improving,” he said. “In three weeks, you see cars improving by two or three tenths, so we need to make a huge step forward.

“Definitely it [winning races] is a bit too optimistic but when we have new parts and everything on the car then we can talk better.

Without trying the new parts it is difficult to say, but to close the gap to the guys in front and win races is a little bit too optimistic - but we hope.”

Sebastian Vettel closed out the last morning of Formula 1 testing at Mugello on top of the timesheets for Red Bull Racing.

The German fired his way to the top of the times with a 1m21.314s flyer just over an hour before the lunch break, and then improved the benchmark time to a 1m21.267s several runs later.

Behind Vettel there was little breathing room. Fresh from topping Wednesday’s times, Romain Grosjean was back in the hunt for Lotus, his best just 0.067 seconds slower than Vettel’s. Fernando Alonso was just 0.029s behind Grosjean, the top three covered by less than a tenth at the break.

But it was not all smooth running for Ferrari.

Just under an hour into the day’s running, Alonso went off at Turn 12, nudging the wall and damaging the front of the F2012. It took more than two hours for the Spaniard to return to the track. The team was running its latest upgrade package - which it hopes will turn its season around - for the first time this morning.

Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso) and Sergio Perez (Sauber) finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Force India’s Paul di Resta was sixth fastest despite having to be rescued from the gravel after an off at the exit of Scarperia halfway through the morning.

Heikki Kovalainen was the busiest driver for the morning, completing 62 laps in the Caterham. He finished up seventh, ahead of McLaren’s Oliver Turvey, Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes and Timo Glock’s Marussia.

Pastor Maldonado ended the morning slowest, after completing just four laps thanks to an electrical problem on the Williams.

Small industry growth of Bali minus 4.25 percent Bali Post

DENPASAR - Having lived through a positive growth as much as 8.47 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, the production growth of micro and small industry (IMK) in the first quarter of 2012 experienced a negative growth of 4.25 percent. Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali also noted the annual growth of IMK indicated negative rate of 4.21 percent.

The Head of BPS Bali, I Gede Suarsa, said the delayed price hike plan of subsidized fuel affected the micro and small businesses. Not a few entrepreneurs were admitted to be disappointed with the policy.

“The policy was considered to have caused the constant increase in price of raw materials and basic needs. Delay in the subsidized fuel price hike results in polemic for business sector. A number of suppliers

have raised the prices of raw materials of production when the policy was still in planning stage,” said Gede Suarsa in Denpasar, Wednesday (May 2).

Such condition, recognized Gede Suarsa, also affected the rate of inflation, in which in the first three months of this year, the inflation rate in Bali had reached 2.01 percent or higher than in the first quarter of 2011 reaching 1.26 percent.

“As a matter of fact, the problems faced by the mi-

cro and small-scale industries are quite numerous and vary.

Among other things, they lack of strengthening effort and capital, particularly the access to banking institution, marketing constraints, design, and technology,” he said.

Gede Suarsa exemplified the financial assistance rolled out by state-owned enterprises intended for the micro and smallscale business remained to face less optimal distribution.
