Mangrove plants under threats of rubbish Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Large amount of rubbish in the river basin has been addressed by the ranks of Denpasar Public Works. The measures taken are such as the installation of rubbish net in the Badung River, Rangda River (at Suwung Batan Kendal) as well as in Loloan River (Tanjung Hamlet, Sanur Kauh). This rubbish net was intended to avoid the over-abundant rubbish floating into the sea, especially on Pengembak Beach, Sanur. However, so far the tools were frequently left open.

As a result, those rubbishes enter the mangrove forest. This condition can hamper the growth of mangroves. Therefore, a number of legislators of Denpasar House hoped the rubbish nets were not opened. “We do hope the rubbish nets are not opened,” said Chairman of the Functional Group (Golkar) Party in the Bali House, Monday (May 2).

He said that when making a raid to Rangda River and Loloan River, his party encountered the rubbish net in Rangda River. The condition allowed the waste to flow through to downstream especially leading to Pengembak Beach, Sanur. The large amount of rubbish around the Pengembak Beach was also feared to damage the presence of mangrove plants, especially the small

mangrove plants. “Small mangrove plants will be difficult to grow if it continues to be attached by rubbish. Even, the rubbish can result in the dismantling of a small mangrove plant,” explained Wandhira, accompanied by the Deputy Chairman of the faction, Putu Oka Mahendra, as well as the other faction colleagues.

One of the duty officers, Made Werta, admitted the rubbish net in Loloan River needed taking out someday, especially during the rainy season.

However, in normal weather conditions the rubbish net was rarely opened. The pickup of rubbish from the net had been carried out any time. In a day, his party could pick it up no less than two containers. “But in rainy season, it can reach

up to five containers,” said Werta.

Meanwhile, Head of Denpasar Public Works, Ketut Winartha, when confirmed separately, also justified if the rubbish net was opened during heavy rains. It was intended to anticipate the occurrence of rubbish blocks (accumulation of rubbish) that might result in flooding. “We take out the rubbish net at particular times only, especially for anticipation of flooding, considering that character of the floating rubbish during the rains varied. Unless opened, we worry the rubbish net will be unable to take out the piles of rubbish. As a result, it can cause damage as happened in Badung River where a large tree stuck in the rubbish net,” said Winartha. (kmb12)

The Need for Train Service in Bali DENPASAR - The chairman of the Bali Tourist Transport Association (PAWIBA), Bagus Soediana, told Bisnis Bali that a fixed schedule train service traversing the island would do much to reduce traffic and population pressures.

A fast, efficient and affordable train ser-

vice would, according to Soediana, have many benefits for Bali. The use of private vehicles and the pollution they cause would be reduced as visitors and residents alike opting to use the faster and more affordable alternative of travel by train.

Soediana also suggested that a regular train service could offer different classes of service and separate cars for the transport of cargo. In this way, trucks arriving at Bali’s two main sea ports could discharge the cargo at the ports for transfer to trains in order to reduce truck traffic in Bali.

Dewa Ruci Junction Underpass Project is mentioned to affect the existence of Dewa Ruci statue.

Location of the underpass excavation project around the Dewa Ruci statue is feared to cause fatal impact, namely the fall of the statue. This concern was contradicted by Deputy Regent of Badung I Ketut Sudikerta. According to him, the underpass project would not graze the location or foundation of the Dewa Ruci statue.

Sudikerta met in the Badung Civic Center, Monday (May 2), explained that location of the underpass project would be around the right side of the Dewa Ruci statue, Kuta. Sudikerta stated there was no problem related to the underpass project and existence of statue being one of the tourism icons.

Therefore, it was no longer needed to search for the Detailed Engineering Design (DED) of the Dewa Ruci statue.

“DED is unnecessary as the statue is not affected. So, it does not matter,” said Sudikerta in brief.

Furthermore, he explained that the process of land acquisition for the un-

derpass project had now been underway. The extent of land in use was about 8,600 square meters. Similarly, the recommendation of the National Land Agency had been already signed.

For information, physical construction of the Dewa Ruci junction underpass was targeted to begin no later than June 2011. The development of the underpass project costing hundreds of billions of rupiahs would be implemented throughout 800 meters with the length of tunnel about 40 meters. Planning and implementation process of the project encountered a number of constraints.

One of which was the project position in relation to the existence of the Dewa Ruci statue.

Head of the National Road Management Agency VIII, Susalit Alius, recently revealed that his party worried about the excavation process of the underpass because the distance of the underpass to the Dewa Ruci statue was close enough. If excavation was not carried out with careful calculation, the statue could possibly collapse because it could touch the statue foundation. On that account, DED of the statue was very important in preparing the technical calculations. (kmb25)

HIV/AIDS cases in Tabanan are increasingly apprehensive.

Last month, 20 people were declared to have been infected by the deadly disease. This figure is believed to be still rising because its transmission is difficult to detect.

Moreover, those with positive HIV/AIDS can only be known from examination in the Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) clinic owned by regency government.

The number of residents with positive HIV/AIDS has increased sharply compared to the previous month reaching 18 people. This amount is also known from patients coming to VCT clinic. Until last March, the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Tabanan has reached 162 people.

“People with HIV/AIDS continue to rise. Therefore, we are aggressively doing various preventive measures,” said the Head of Tabanan Health Services, Ketut Sumiarta, accompanied by Division Head of Disease Prevention and Environmental Health, Nyoman Suratmika to Bali Post, Monday (May 2).

People with HIV/AIDS had been known to appear in Tabanan since 2008. At that time, Sumiarta said his party conducted a survey to 57 prostitutes (PSK) in Pesiapan terminal. As a result, 14 people were tested positive to HIV/AIDS. Since then, the number of sufferers continued to grow.

Each month, an average of 1-5 infected people was detected. The peak was known in last March and April.

“The increase is more than two-fold,” he said. Surprisingly, the patients were known to be dominated by men of various ages and spread throughout the village in Tabanan. He exemplified the data in last March where there were 62 HIV-infected men, while women remained 23 people. Of

this amount, some were known to have died. They were known not only from Tabanan but also from other regencies in Bali.

According to Sumiarta, Tabanan Regency together with the District AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) managed three clinics to determine the transmission of HIV/AIDS. They consisted of Pelangi VCT Clinic in Tabanan Hospital, IMS Clinic in Tabanan Community Health Center Subsidiary 1 and Methadone Clinic in Tabanan Community Health Center III. For the time being, the people with HIV/AIDS could only be detected from those three clinics. And the patients checking-up their health were coming voluntarily.

“Ahead, we will tighten the examination. In other words, those who indicated to have been infected are obliged to undergo VCT as well as follow the routine treatment,” he said. This measure was to suppress the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Sumiarta added that both diseases were known to have penetrated the rural areas. The trigger was diverse.

One of them was that residents were desperate to visit the house of prostitution or the rampant night cafés.

The measure taken by Health Services was to conduct a routine inspection to prostitutes and café girls in partnership with HIV/AIDS volunteers. Among them, there were the Bali Health Foundation (YKB) and the Network of AIDS Infected People (JOTI). Then, customers of prostitution house were provided with condom campaigns. It was focused on the use of condoms during an intercourse with prostitute. “In this campaign, other than obliging the prostitutes to make regular health check-up, we also suggest them to offer condoms for their guests,” said Sumiarta.

46.38 percent of exports dispatched via ports outside Bali Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Realization of Bali’s export in February 2011 reached USD 47,917,855. It has increased by 8.54 percent from the previous month worth USD 44,149,507.

Other than through port in Bali, 46.38 percent of Bali’s products were exported through several ports outside Bali, such as 46.38 percent through East Java, Greater Jakarta (1.53 percent), North Sumatera (0.12 percent), Central Java (0.06 percent), and Jogjakarta (0.06 percent).

Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali Province, Gede Suarsa, said that most of the Bali’s export commodities were

dispatched to destination countries like the United States, Japan, Italy, France and Spain with their respective percentage of 17.27 percent, 11.98 percent, 7.08 percent, 6.89 percent and 6.19 percent.

“Garments and handicraft products are leading commodities aside from fish and shrimp, wood and articles of wood, jewelry, furniture and home lighting,” Suarsa said in Denpasar Monday (May 2).

According to him, the global economic conditions had been getting better, especially in the United States, affecting the improvement of purchasing power on foreign consumers. Similarly, the interests and purchasing power of various

Bali’s commodities continued to increase although they were not as good as before the global crisis.

“Bali also exported at least 17 types of handicrafts made by local artisans, in addition to fishery that is quite favored by international community,” he said.

Meanwhile, related to the import value of Bali, described Suarsa, reached USD 20,374,225.

The figure was down 58.18 percent compared to the previous month reaching USD 20,374,225 and even declined at 65.65 percent compared to the period of February 2010 that reached USD 24,804,852. “The primary commodities imported consisted of

cereal products, jewelry, mechanical goods and electronic devices,” he said.

According to him, most of the imports were from Vietnam, Singapore, the United States, Hong Kong and Australia with their respective percentage of 28.54 percent, 15.46 percent, 13.99 percent, 10.99 percent and 8.28 percent.

“It does not matter to import production goods because they will be able to provide a positive impact on the growth and level of social welfare,” he said.

In the meantime, the Head of Bali Industry and Trade Services, Gde Darmaja, said the revival and

decline in the Bali’s leading export commodities should be responded positively by exporters. It meant the export conditions had been getting better, so the performance of exporters and related parties should enhance the growth of internal performance.

Bali Industry and Trade Services had provided coaching in order the perpetrators of export business could take positive measures for their business development in terms of human resources, labor discipline, services, and enhance the creativity so foreign consumers could be more interested in buying the products marketed. Phone call by Kuwaiti courier led to bin Laden Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – When one of Osama bin Laden’s most trusted aides picked up the phone last year, he unknowingly led U.S. pursuers to the doorstep of his boss, the world’s most wanted terrorist.

That phone call, recounted Sunday by a U.S. official, ended a years-long search for bin Laden’s personal courier, the key break in a worldwide manhunt. The courier, in turn, led U.S. intelligence to a walled compound in northeast Pakistan, where a team of Navy SEALs shot bin Laden to death.

The violent final minutes were the culmination of years of intelligence work. Inside the CIA team hunting bin Laden, it always was clear that bin Laden’s vulnerability was his couriers. He was too smart to let al-Qaida foot soldiers, or even his senior commanders, know his hideout. But if he wanted to get his messages out, somebody had to carry them, someone bin Laden trusted with his life.

terrogators about an important courier with the nom de guerre Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti who was close to bin Laden. After the CIA captured al-Qaida’s No. 3 leader, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, he confirmed knowing al-Kuwaiti but denied he had anything to do with al-Qaida.

Then in 2004, top al-Qaida operative Hassan Ghul was captured in Iraq. Ghul told the CIA that alKuwaiti was a courier, someone crucial to the terrorist organization. In particular, Ghul said, the courier was close to Faraj al-Libi, who replaced Mohammed as al-Qaida’s operational commander. It was a key break in the hunt for in bin Laden’s personal courier. “Hassan Ghul was the linchpin,” a U.S. official said.

Finally, in May 2005, al-Libi was captured. Under CIA interrogation, al-Libi admitted that when he was promoted to succeed Mohammed, he received the word through a courier.

But he made up a name for the courier and denied knowing al-Kuwaiti, a denial that was so adamant and unbelievable that the CIA took it as confirmation that he and Mohammed were protecting the courier. It only reinforced the idea that al-Kuwaiti was very important to al-Qaida. If they could find the man known as alKuwaiti, they’d find bin Laden.

The revelation that intelligence gleaned from the CIA’s so-called black sites helped kill bin Laden was seen as vindication for many intelligence officials who have been repeatedly investigated and criticized for their involvement in a program that involved the harshest interrogation methods in U.S. history.

“We got beat up for it, but those efforts led to this great day,” said Marty Martin, a retired CIA officer who for years led the hunt for bin Laden.

Mohammed did not discuss alKuwaiti while being subjected to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, former officials said. He acknowledged knowing him many months later under standard interrogation, they said, leaving it once again up for debate as to whether the harsh technique was a valuable tool or an unnecessarily violent tactic.

OTTAWA – Canada’s ruling Conservatives looked set to retain power in a federal election on Monday, but pollsters said it was too early to say if the party would get a majority or stay in power with a minority.

Early results showed the Conservatives well ahead of their nearest rivals, the left-leaning New Democrats. A party needs 155 seats to win a majority in the 308-seat House of Commons “We think we’ve certainly made headway, forged a beachhead if you will, in Atlantic Canada, picked up more seats and we’re hoping that we will get ever closer to that magic 155 number,” Conservative Defense Minister Peter MacKay said on CBC Television after holding on to his seat in Nova Scotia.

The Conservatives, describing themselves as the guardians of a surprisingly resilient Canadian economy, stressed throughout the

election campaign that they needed a majority to prevent an unstable coalition of opposition parties.

The pro-labor NDP, which has never held power at the federal level, promised higher corporate taxes to pay for increased social spending, while the Liberals promised to increase spending on higher education.

All three parties said they would balance the budget, although they had different methods of doing so.

But opinion poll figures gave no clear indication on whether the Conservatives would get their majority, or whether the NDP might have a chance of forming a minority government, in coalition with the faltering Liberals.

As the polls closed, early and provisional results showed the Conservatives ahead or winning in 133 electoral districts, while the NDP was ahead or winning in 59 districts.

The Liberals were well behind at 27, while the Bloc Quebecois, which campaigns only in the French speaking province of Quebec had five.

Before the election, the Conservatives had 143 seats, compared to 77 for the Liberals, 47 for the Bloc Quebecois and 36 for the New Democrats. There were two independents and three seats were vacant. Canada’s three opposition parties brought the Conservative government down on March 25.

The Conservatives led in opinion polls, but the left-leaning New Democrats narrowed the gap in the closing days of the campaign, putting in an especially strong showing in eastern Canada and in Quebec.

GENEVA – Switzerland said Monday it had frozen 830 million francs ($960 million/646 million euros) in funds belonging to north African strongmen since the start of this year’s popular uprisings.

Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey revealed the figure during a conference in Tunisia, where she is on a three-day visit, foreign ministry spokesman Lars Knuchel told AFP. Most of the blocked funds — 410

million francs — are linked to former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and his associates, Knuchel said.

Another 360 million francs blocked by Switzerland are believed to belong to Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi’s regime and 60 million francs to former Tunisian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and his associates.

Switzerland ordered the freezing of the assets of Ben Ali and Mubarak shortly after they were toppled in popular uprisings in January and February respectively.

It ordered a freeze on Kadhafi’s assets in February after he cracked down on opposition protests, sparking an armed conflict with rebels and international military action against his regime.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Prince William heading back to work after wedding Agence France Presse

LONDON – Prince William was expected back at work on Tuesday after he and his new wife Catherine headed back to their secluded island home following a secret weekend break in Britain.

The new duke and duchess of Cambridge were due to return late Monday to Anglesey, northwest Wales, where William was to go back to his day job as a search and rescue helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Their fairytale wedding on Friday was watched by an estimated one million people on the streets of London and two billion on television around the world.

“The chances are if he’s back at work on Tuesday he’ll be getting in to Anglesey on Monday evening,” a Ministry of Defence spokesman said. “It will be a normal day at work for him after the wedding, nothing special planned.” Like Friday, Monday was a public holiday in Britain, making for an extra-long weekend.

William’s colleagues at RAF Valley on Anglesey were in action on the wedding day, airlifting to hospital a 12-year-old boy who was rescued by a lifeboat crew after drifting a mile out to sea in a rubber ring.

The newlyweds spent the weekend at a private location, having flown out of Buckingham Palace by helicopter on Saturday.

The couple chose not to depart immediately for their honeymoon — details of which which will not be announced in advance — though royal officials have said it will be abroad. The newlyweds “planned the honeymoon together”, said a spokeswoman for Clarence House, the office of William’s father Prince Charles.

While William gets back to work in Wales, London is still abuzz with royal wedding fever. Three-hour queues to get into the Westminster Abbey wedding venue stretched around the block, with well-wishers keen to get a glimpse before it is reconfigured back to normal.

PARIS – Search teams have retrieved the second black box flight recorder of an Air France plane that crashed in the Atlantic in 2009 en route from Rio to Paris, killing 228 people, French investigators said Tuesday.

“The investigation team localised and identified the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) at 2150 UTC (GMT) on Monday 2 May, 2011,” France’s Bureau of Investigation and Analysis (BEA) said in a statement.

The recorder was “in good condition,” BEA chief Jean-Paul Troadec told AFP, adding: “The chassis, the module and even the

underwater locator beacon is there.” “It was raised and lifted on board the ship Ile de Sein” by a submersible robot early on Tuesday, the statement said.

The find by the robot submarine could be a breakthrough in the investigation into the disaster, as the boxes may hold crucial data that could enable BEA investigators to determine the cause of the crash.

The first black box was recovered on Sunday. The Airbus A330 plunged into the Atlantic while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on June 1, 2009.

Investigators announced they had found the main wreckage in early April on the fourth and final attempt.

The official cause of the disaster remains uncertain, but the crash has been partly blamed on malfunctioning speed sensors used by Airbus. Air France has been accused of not having responded quickly enough to reports that they might be faulty.

Investigators and Airbus remained cautious, stressing that without the black boxes the riddle of the plane’s last moments might never be solved.

Air France and Airbus — which are being probed for alleged manslaughter in connection with the crash, the deadliest in the carrier’s history — are paying the estimated $12.7 million (nine million euro) cost of the search.

He said TNI still needed support from all community components including the mass media who could report immediately in case they found abnormal things.

RI, Singapore communicate over ship hijacking Antara

JAKARTA - Chief Security Minister Djoko Suyanto said the government had communicated with Singapore’s Maritime Security Force regarding efforts to release MT Gemini ship hijacked by Somali pirates since Saturday, April 30, 2011.

“I have contacted the Maritime Security Force in Singapore. It happened by chance that its director is my old friend. Up to last night, they have not yet been able to communicate with Gemini ship,” the minister said after opening a “Maritime Security Desktop Exercise and Law of the Sea Course” here on Tuesday.

It said that the MT Gemeni when it was hijacked was with crew members 13 from Indonesia, five from China, four from South Korea and three from Myanmar.

Over 598,000 tourists visited RI in March Antara

JAKARTA - More than 598.1 thousand tourists visited Indonesia in March, up slightly by 0.64 percent from the same month last year, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said.

“Compared with February 2011, the number of tourist arrivals in March 2011 rose 5.28 percent,” BPS Chief Rusman Heriawan said here on Monday.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Bali via Ngurah Rai Airport in March increased 5.97 percent to 202.5 thousand from 191.1 thousand in the same month last year, he said.

“Compared to February 2011, the number of tourist arrivals in Bali in March rose slightly by 0.54 percent,” he said.

Cumulatively, the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in the January-March 2011 period reached 1.71 million, a 6.44 percent increase compared to the same period last year, he said.

The increase in the number of tourist arrivals occurred in most of

the country‘s main gateways, with the highest increase of 73.82 percent recorded at Sepinggan airport in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

This was followed by Husein Sastranegara airport in Bandung, West Java, with 33.22 percent.

“The increase in the number of tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2011 is a good signal. Hopefully, the number will increase in the upcoming months,” he said.

He said the room occupancy rates of star-rated hotels in 20 of the country‘s 33 provinces in March reached an average of 51.95 percent, up 2.09 points from March 2010 when the figure was 49.86 percent.

“Compared to February 2011, the room occupancy rates in March 2011 rose 0.61 points,” he said.

In March, the highest room occupancy rate of 75.07 percent was recorded in Central Sulawesi and the lowest one of 39.79 percent in West Kalimantan. He said foreign tourists‘ length of stay in the 20 provinces in March 2011 averaged 2.11 days, down by 0.06 day from March 2010.

Suu Kyi expressed hope that ASEAN countries would help the Myanmar people in their struggle for democracy and their efforts to strengthen the role of civil society in their country.

She said contacts and engagement between the people and government officials in ASEAN countries were an important factor that contributed to the development of the region.

“I hope the time will come where there will be a free exchange of ideas and of people between Myanmar and other ASEAN countries. The time will come where we all agree we want a better world based on basic human rights for all of us. When we come to the point that ASEAN will be a happier and stronger region,” she said.

The ACSC/APF is an annual meeting held alongside every ASEAN Summit. It is a forum that gathers common people and government officials to have

a dialogue. The event is also meant to increase the awareness of people in the region about the mechanism and activities conducted by ASEAN as an organization.

Clove Distillation in Jembrana Protested Jembrana - Clove distillation waste belongs to UD Surya Jaya in Segah Subdistrict, Asah Duren Village, Pekutatan District, Jembrana Regency, Bali protested by local people. Ketut Suparsa and others confessed the liquid waste that throwing to the river polluted the river so local people could not use the river water to take bath. The clove distillation held every day so the waste was pretty much.

The stylish and aggressive goofyfooter from Kuta nicknamed “the Bull” takes home a winners check for Rp 15 million and 3,000 Coca-Cola ISC Championship points, and now sits in second spot in the 2011 rankings, having finished equal third in the first event on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour in April.

“Wow, it feels so good to win!” said Rondi after receiving his winner’s check.

“There weren’t many great waves out there in the final and I was so lucky today that Pepen didn’t get any. I felt like I barely made my earlier heats today with kind of low scores, first against Gogo (Komang Sujaya) in the quarters and then against Robot (Wayan Susiana) in the semi’s.

I was really happy just to be in the final, because the way Pepen has been surfing I didn’t think I had a chance against him. I was having a rough time during the first half of the heat, but then I got a couple of the smaller waves and somehow got the lead, then managed to hold on, hoping Pepen didn’t get a good one” he finished with big smile.

Hendrik was understandably disappointed, saying “I don’t know what happened out there, but I just couldn’t find a good scoring wave. I felt good and my board felt good, but somehow I couldn’t get more than a couple of turns in on a wave. My waves scores coming into today were all really good, and I wasn’t having much trouble winning my heats, even today up until this final. I shouldn’t be too unhappy with second, but I really should have won today, I was so close.” But he can be consoled by the fact that has the number one spot in the rankings now, having finished in the runner up spot in the

first two contests of the 2011 season.

This was the third and final day of competition at the 2011 Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle, the first day having been held at Bangsal Beach in Sanur Reef on April 27th with a trial heat and Rounds 1through 3, then Round 4 was completed at “Da Jungle” on April 30, and today the quarterfinals through finals were run once again at “Da Jungle.”

The early morning check of Sanur Reef revealed smallish conditions whereas “Da Jungle” had solid 4-6 foot sets on offer, so the decision was made to get started and completed both the Open and Master’s Division today as the forecast showed a quickly decreasing swell beginning tomorrow and through the remainder of the waiting period that ends on May 8.

Though the wave conditions were challenging, almost maxing out the capability of “Da Jungle” to handle them, and torrential rain was pouring down for more than an hour mid way through the morning, the Open Division and Masters (over 35 years of age) contestants battled through the pounding waves and inclement weather starting from 7:30 am til the final horn blew at just before 12:30 pm. Often a paddle back to the outside would take a full 5 minutes or more, giving them a testing workout.

In the Master’s final, last year’s Rumble runner up and 2010 CocaCola ISC Masters champion Ketut Juliarta staged a come-from-behind charge to leapfrog last year’s winner Wayan Budayasa and take the victory, blasting a medium sized set wave apart with a series of searing turns and posting a 7 point score, the highest of the final. He was elated with his win, thanking everyone profusely from the podium while being sprayed with Coca-Cola by his fellow competitors. With a second place finish in the first event and yesterday’s runner up finish, Wayan Budayasa now sits in the number one spot in the 2011 Master’s Division rankings.

From One Green to Some other Greens Advancement of science of technology does not answer all problems encountered by human life. In agriculture, for instance, modern farmers can now have boosted the quantity of production, even in multiple amounts. On the one hand, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality.

Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an efficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others.

Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers.

Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system (Simantri).

Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction.

Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali

One of the aspects is applied in the agricultural field. Socialization has been intensified while establishing farmer groups. Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality.

As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter.

However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers.

Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palm-leaf manuscript entitled “Shri

Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.”

It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managed by offering two pieces of ketupat sidayu together with oblation and side dish of yellow dragonfly.

Meanwhile, Subash Palekar from India claimed to have developed the vedic-based farming. He has initiated his ‘spiritual farming’ since 1988. In essence he said that God or nature has provided human with everything required to grow plants. So implementing the chemical fertilizers and pesticide means to oppose God and will result in bad impact to human. Cow dung and urine as well as compost are three beneficial ingredients being enough for farming both on irrigated and non-irrigated land. By doing so, he claims it is a ‘zero budget of natural farming’ as in his trilogy book entitled Philosophy of Spiritual Farming.

To sum up, all movements at least refer to the same keywords namely green, natural and ecofriendly concept. They denote milestone of new awareness on modern human to re-orientate their food production in quality. This awareness has triggered the orientation in the quality of life and environment. Hopefully, the aspiration of Bali as Green Province and other green concepts could be realized supported by entire community based on their awareness of a better quality life! (BTN/punia)

BUSINESS India central bank raises rates by 50 bps Reuters

MUMBAI – India’s central bank raised interest rates by a sharper-than-expected 50 basis points on Tuesday and signaled it would battle stubbornly high inflation even at the expense of the government’s economic growth ambitions.

The rate rise was its ninth since March 2010 and exceeded expectations for a 25 basis point rise, although the case for stronger action had been building since figures showed March inflation reached nearly 9 percent, above the central bank’s perceived comfort zone.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lifted its repo rate, at which it lends to banks, to 7.25 percent.

“Current elevated rates of inflation pose significant risks to future growth,” RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said in the bank’s annual monetary policy statement. “Bringing them down, therefore, even at the cost of some growth in the short-run, should take precedence,” he said.

The overnight indexed swap curve flattened with a sharper rise in front end rates, while the 10-year benchmark bond yield rose 4 basis points to 8.21 percent.

Indian shares extended losses to more than 1 percent and the banking sector was down 2 percent as the central bank toughened its fight to combat inflationary pressures. The RBI has been among the most aggressive central banks anywhere over the past year.

Central banks in other developing markets have also been raising rates as their economies emerged from the global financial crisis much faster than industrialized countries.

But inflation in India remains stubbornly high. While supply-side bottlenecks, including in food production, are beyond the scope of monetary policy, inflation pressures have become more generalized.

“Inflation has consistently surprised on the upside and there is little choice but for the central bank to send a strong tightening signal/anti-inflation stance

as they have done,” said Ramya Suryanarayanan, economist at DBS Bank in Singapore.

“We expect a stand pat at the next meeting and then another 50 bps hike at the policy meeting in July, though it is also possible there is a 25 bps hike at the next meeting and another 25 bps hike at the July meeting.” Food price inflation of more than 9 percent and fuel price inflation in double digits have added pressure on a Congress partyled government already reeling from a spate of corruption scandals.

But lower economic growth could also be a political headache for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The central bank said high prices of oil and other commodities and the cumulative impact of its policy measures will lead to growth of about 8 percent in the current fiscal year, assuming a normal summer monsoon and global crude oil prices of $110 a barrel.

That puts the RBI’s projections a full percentage point lower than the governments own forecasts. Asia’s third-largest economy grew by an estimated 8.6 percent in the year that ended in March 2011.

“We can now expect rates to be increased by at least another 50 basis points by end-2011. Further rate hikes will depend upon how commodity prices pan out and moderation in growth takes place,” said Ashutosh Datar, economist at IIFL in Mumbai.

Under a new arrangement, the repo rate becomes the central bank’s only independently varying policy rate, and the reverse repo rate, at which the RBI absorbs excess liquidity, will be pegged 100 basis points below the repo rate, or 6.25 percent after Tuesday’s increase.

“The move to make the repo rate

the only independent variable rate is a move designed to ensure quicker transmission of monetary policy signals,” said N.Bhanumurthy, an economist at the Delhi-based National Institute of Public Finance and Policy.

“This was needed and perhaps inevitable given the fact that the central bank is embarrassed about the fact that despite eight hikes before today inflation has been at a high of near 9 percent.”

The RBI said it expects inflation to remain elevated near March levels in the first half of the fiscal year that began in April before easing in the second half.

It set a target of 6 percent headline inflation, with an upward bias, for the end of the fiscal year in March 2012.

Subbarao said maintaining price stability is required to sustain mediumterm growth.

“Persistently high rates of inflation raise the risks of inflationary expectations becoming unhinged,” Subbarao said.

Analysts polled recently by Reuters had expected 75 basis points of rate increases during the remainder of 2011, including Tuesday’s move.

Despite efforts by the central bank to tighten monetary policy, data on Monday showed expansion in the manufacturing sector remained strong in April, helped by higher output and employment, even as similar surveys showed slowing growth for China, where policymakers have taken numerous steps to tame rising prices.

Australia’s central bank held interest rates steady at 4.75 percent on Tuesday but warned of underlying inflation that could head higher, reinforcing the case for a further tightening in the coming months.

SINGAPORE – Oil prices fell to below $113 a barrel Tuesday in Asia as a stronger U.S. dollar made crude more expensive for investors with other currencies.

Benchmark crude for June delivery was down 57 cents at $112.95 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 41 cents to settle at $113.52 on Monday.

In London, Brent crude for June delivery was down 50 cents to $124.62 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Crude has jumped 34 percent since mid-February, a rally fueled by disrup-

tion of oil supplies in Libya and a weaker dollar. On days when the dollar strengthens, commodities such as oil tend to fall.

The euro fell to $1.4769 on Tuesday from $1.4823 late Monday.

Traders are also mulling the impact of the death of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan on Sunday. Some are concerned about revenge attacks on U.S. targets while others estimate a weaker al-Qaida lowers the risk that terrorism will destabilize the oil-rich Middle East.

“In a number of respects, Ben Bernanke is much more central to the future of oil prices than Osama bin Laden,” Cameron Hanover said in a report. “We have seen the impact a weaker U.S. dollar has had on oil prices.”

In other Nymex trading in June contracts, heating oil fell 0.8 cents to $3.24 a gallon and gasoline dropped 0.6 cents to $3.34 a gallon. Natural gas futures were up 0.5 cents at $4.69 per 1,000 cubic feet.

NEW YORK – French fashion legend Pierre Cardin is ready to sell his group and will seek one billion euros, he said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal published Tuesday.

“I want to sell it now,” Cardin, 88, told the US business daily. “I know I won’t be here in a few years and the business needs to continue.”

The report noted that banks estimate the value of the group,

founded in 1949, at 200 million euros, though financial information on the sprawling fashion empire is sketchy.

An astute businessman as well as a groundbreaking designer, Cardin has up to 600 licences worldwide.

He invested in China as far back as 1978, one of the first foreigners to try the market.

Cardin, who has no heirs, said he wants to stay on as creative director, explaining that it would be in the buyer ’s interest “for the brand’s image.”

rector Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal have had the bin Laden project in the works, and now that the al-Qaeda leader has been killed, a person close to the filmmakers said Monday that the film is more relevant than ever.

The as-yet-untitled film will center on the Black Ops pursuit of bin Laden, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to talk about the project’s status.

U.S. forces have hunted bin Laden since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks nearly 10 years ago. A team of Navy SEALs shot and killed bin Laden early Monday at a compound in Pakistan. Bigelow declined to comment about the project, according to Susan Ciccone, a spokeswoman for the director.

“The Hurt Locker,” which centered on a U.S. bomb-disposal unit in Iraq, won best picture at the Academy Awards last year and earned the best-directing Oscar for Bigelow, the first woman to receive that honor. The film won a total of six Oscars, including the prize for original screenplay for Boal.

California court rejects Phil Spector appeal Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – A California appeals court rejected music producer Phil Spector’s bid to overturn his murder conviction on Monday, saying it was permissible for prosecutors to call a parade of women who said Spector had threatened them with guns in the past.

A three-member panel of the state 2nd District Court of Appeal affirmed Spector’s conviction in a strongly worded, 81-page decision rejecting a number of claims made by defense attorney Dennis Riordan.

The judges also dismissed the contention that actress Lana Clarkson was despondent and might have killed herself with a gun at Spector’s home. In making that ruling, the panel pointed to

evidence from her mother that suggested Clarkson was hopeful about the future.

The panel also concluded the trial court did not abuse its discretion by admitting evidence to prove “Clarkson did not die by her own hand.”

In addition, the judges found there was neither judicial nor prosecutorial misconduct at the trial, and that the testimony of five women who claimed Spector threatened them with guns was properly admitted, even though some of the incidents dated back 30 years.

Spector was never charged in those instances. Still, the judges said the testimony showed a pattern of gun-related behavior.

Spector’s lawyer said the women’s testimony was inflammatory.

In a program taped last week on the day the White House released his long form birth certificate, Obama told Winfrey, “The line between entertainment and politics has blurred.”

“Reality TV is seeping into how we think about our politics. When I am reading letters at night about families who are at risk of losing their homes or are describing to me what it is like when they send out 16 resumes and they don’t get a response back, and they are trying to figure out how they are going to pay their bills, it is not reality TV. “That is real and that is what we have to spend some time on.”

Newspapers see big demand from bin Laden news Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – When big news breaks, newspapers are in demand despite the immediacy of online news. Newspaper across the country including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The News & Advance in Lynchburg, Va., printed extra copies in anticipation of higher demand Monday, when headlines heralded the death of Osama bin Laden.

Some newspapers stopped their presses to update their front pages with late Sunday’s developments. The Washington Examiner, a free daily newspaper, ran a special edition Monday afternoon under the headline, “We Got Him!” The website for the Newseum, a museum in Washington devoted to journalism, was inaccessible for many visitors Monday as thousands of people flocked to it to see how newspapers around the world handled coverage of the terrorist leader’s death. The website posts digital replicas of front pages of hundreds of newspapers every day.

Paul Sparrow, senior vice president of broadcasting at the Newseum, said the museum often sees demand for newspapers’ front pages spike when there are major stories in sports, entertainment or politics. Some of the biggest news events recently were the 2008 presidential elections and the New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl victory in 2009.

The site was processing more than 2,800 requests per second when it became overloaded, he said. Traffic started to peak at 3 a.m. Eastern time when Europeans woke to the news. It grew again at about 6 a.m.

Newseum even became one of the 10 mosttalked about topics on Twitter for a while.

Sparrow said Monday would likely be one of the busiest days, if not the busiest, for Newseum.org. Although websites allow people to get up-to-the-minute news, readers turn to newspapers because they offer a snapshot in time, Sparrow said. “It reflects an emotional moment in time versus an ongoing story that’s constantly changing,” he said.

Study: Ancient ‘Nutcracker Man’ really ate grass Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Nutcracker Man didn’t eat nuts after all. After a half-century of referring to an ancient pre-human as “Nutcracker Man” because of his large teeth and powerful jaw, scientists now conclude that he actually chewed grasses instead.

The study “reminds us that in paleontology, things are not always as they seem,” commented Peter S. Ungar, chairman of anthropology at the University of Arkansas.

The new report, by Thure E. Cerling of the University of Utah and colleagues, is published in Tuesday’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cerling’s team analyzed the carbon in the enamel of 24 teeth from 22 individuals who lived in East Africa between 1.4 million and 1.9 million years ago. One type of carbon is produced from tree leaves, nuts and fruit, another from grasses and grasslike plants called sedges.

It turns out that the early human known as Paranthropus boisei did not eat nuts but dined more heavily on grasses than any other human ancestor or human relative studied to date.

Only an extinct species of grass-eating baboon ate more, they said. “That was not at all what we were expecting,” Cerling said in a telephone interview. Scientists will need to rethink the ways our ancient relatives were using resources, he said.

Added co-author Matt Sponheimer of the University of Colorado: “Frankly, we didn’t expect to find the primate equivalent of a cow dangling from a remote twig of our family tree.”

The skull of Paranthropus was discovered by Mary and Louis Leakey in 1959 at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, and helped put the Leakeys on the world stage. Their daughter-in-law, Maeve Leakey, is a co-author of the paper.

Cerling said much of the previous work on Nutcracker Man was based on the size, shape and wear of the teeth. His team analyzed bits of tooth removed with a drill and the results were completely different, Cerling said. “It stands to reason that other conclusions about other species also will require revisions,” he said.

Ungar, who was not part of the research team, suggested in 2007 the possibility that Nutcracker Man human ate grasses, based on tooth wear.

WWF welcomes Bulgaria ban on Danube sturgeon fishing Agence France Presse

SOFIA – The environmental group WWF welcomed on Monday Bulgaria’s ban on catching sturgeon in the Danube, as the species faces extinction due to overfishing for its caviar. The WWF welcomed the oneyear ban, imposed in March, as “a great step” to help save the species.

“Danube sturgeons, the ancient migratory fish that are today teetering on the brink of extinction due to overfishing because of their valu-

able caviar, have new hope for survival,” it said in a statement.

The ban was the first restriction on sturgeon fishing on the Bulgarian side of the Danube, and the country’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Agency has said it plans to impose a further five-year ban in 2012.

Neighbouring Romania already imposed a 10-year moratorium on sturgeon catching in April 2006.

But this one-sided ban could not have any impact if fishermen across

the river in Bulgaria were still catching sturgeons, the WWF said.

The Black Sea is the second largest sturgeon fishery in the world after the Caspian Sea, and the Danube upstream is one of the most important spawning habitats for giant Beluga sturgeons.

The ancient fish, which outlasted the dinosaurs, has been critically endangered by overfishing for its caviar, which can cost over 6,000 euros (8,900 dollars) per kilogramme, the WWF said.

MANCHESTER - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson faces a delicate balancing act of picking a strong enough side to reach the Champions League final while resting the players he needs for this week’s domestic showdown.

After securing a comfortable 2-0 at Schalke 04 in their semifinal first leg last week, Ferguson was already talking about making changes for Wednesday’s return leg at Old Trafford and the need has since become even greater.

United’s lead at the top of the Premier League was trimmed to three points this weekend to set up Sunday’s match at home to Chelsea as a potential title decider. The London side would go ahead on goal difference with victory.

“We’ll regroup and get them freshened up. I’ll make some changes, without question, on Wednesday,” Ferguson told MUTV after his side lost 1-0 at Arsenal on Sunday to throw open a title race that United had looked to have well under control.

“We’ll bring Paul Scholes back in. Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, fresh players.

We need to do that but, also, I’ve probably got to keep experienced players at the back.”

That would point to captain Nemanja Vidic keeping up his

commanding central defensive partnership with Rio Ferdinand and if Schalke are anywhere near as toothless as last week, the duo would not expend too much energy.

It will hardly be a second-string side if it features the Premier League’s top scorer Berbatov and evergreen midfielder Scholes, but it will be weaker.

Midfielder Ryan Giggs, who became the oldest scorer in the Champions League at 37 years and 148 days when he struck the first goal last week, is unlikely to be rushed back after missing the Arsenal game through illness.

The first leg’s other scorer Wayne Rooney is also a prime candidate to be rested as the striker has been excelling in a new deeper-lying role behind Javier Hernandez that is as energy-sapping as it is devastating to defences.

DONE ENOUGH Schalke travel to Manchester needing goals but know United have conceded only three times in 11 matches in the competition this season, suggesting the English side will reach their third final in four years.

United defender Patrice Evra was,

however, keen to remind his team mates they could not afford to think they had done enough to reach the May 28 final at Wembley, having experienced a Champions League turnaround in his Monaco days.

While that could inspire Schalke, the reality is they will need to become a different side from the one that barely put up a fight at home last week. “We must be much more compact and aggressive than we were in the first game,” defender Christoph Metzelder said “In playing terms, we are not as strong in comparison with Manchester United and therefore we must surpass ourselves in other aspects. If we are going to pull off a miracle, we must do a hell of a job.”

The winners will face either Barcelona or Real Madrid, who play on Tuesday with Barca holding a 2-0 advantage before hosting their La Liga rivals.

Leverkusen’s Hyypia to retire, start coaching Agence France Presse

LEVERKUSEN, Germany – Bayer Leverkusen’s Finnish defender Sami Hyypia confirmed on Monday he will hang up his boots at the end of the season and will join the coaching staff at the Bundesliga club.

Hyypia, 37, joined Bayer in 2009 after 10 years with Premier League club Liverpool and his contract was due to expire in 2012.

However he has decided to return to Finland to prepare his coaching diploma and will then join the coaching setup at the

Finnish national side before returning to Leverkusen in 2012 after the German club offered him a two-year contract as deputy coach.

“My time at Leverkusen has been fascinating and will finish with a direct qualification for the Champions League,” said Hyypia, who played 52 times for the club.

“I’ve spent two years with a superb team and a wonderful club which is giving me the opportunity to start my coaching career.”

Hyypia has 105 caps for Finland and won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005.

Mavs rally to stun Lakers in Game 1 Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – When Kobe Bryant drained a 3-pointer to put the Los Angeles Lakers up by 16 points in the second half, nobody would have been surprised if the Dallas Mavericks packed it in. After all, these perennial underachievers aren’t exactly known for their playoff tenacity.

Their stirring comeback against the two-time defending champions showed that Dirk Nowitzki and his Mavs just might be capable of creating whole new reputations this spring.

Nowitzki scored 28 points and hit two go-ahead free throws with 19.5 seconds left, Jason Kidd forced a crucial turnover moments later, and the Mavericks escaped with a 96-94 victory in Game 1 on Monday night when Bryant missed two late chances to steal it back for the Lakers.

Jason Terry scored 15 points and Nowitzki had 14 rebounds for the Mavericks, who erased that huge third-quarter deficit before the dramatic finish to the perennial playoff teams’ first postseason meeting in 23 years. The Mavericks trailed 92-87 with 3:32 to play, but finished on a 9-2 run.

“I thought we did a great job hanging in there,” Nowitzki said.

“It wasn’t looking good, but we talked about in the huddle. Just stick with it, try to get some stops, don’t turn the ball over, and get a shot up every time. Just at least give ourselves a chance to make it.”

They made it, all right — but only when Bryant, who scored 21 of his 36 points in the second half, couldn’t provide his usual lategame heroics. “You’ve got to make plays, and you’ve got to dodge some bullets,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “We did both.”

Roddick’s Madrid bid ended by qualifier Cipolla Reuters MADRID - Former world number one Andy Roddick was dumped out in the first round of the Madrid Open on Monday, upset 6-4 6-7 6-3 by qualifier Flavio Cipolla.

MILAN - Italy’s former world champion Alessandro Ballan has been suspended by his BMC team and will miss this month’s Giro d’Italia because of his continued involvement in a long-running doping probe.

The 2008 world champion and compatriot Mauro Santambrogio, who has also been suspended by BMC, have been under investigation for months by Italian authorities looking into potential doping links with their former team Lampre.

Both Lampre and the riders deny any wrongdoing. Ballan was previously suspended by BMC last year only to be cleared by the team. However, the situation has changed again.

“BMC Racing Team President/ General Manager Jim Ochowicz

said new information received, along with consideration of the team’s anti-doping policy and the UCI’s Code of Conduct, means the two will be held out of competition pending further details,” a statement from U.S.-based BMC said late on Monday.

“Both riders have been cooperating fully with the investigation, and, as we did last year, we will respect their presumption of innocence and we expect them to continue their full support to the authorities.”

The Giro, cycling’s second biggest stage race after the Tour de France, starts in Turin on Saturday.

Cycling has been riddled by doping scandals in recent years.

Three-times Tour champion Alberto Contador is competing in the Giro pending a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on whether he should face a ban for a positive test for clenbuterol last year.

Webber open to future team switch MARK Webber insists his future in Formula 1 remains open for now - after saying he would consider a switch to another team for 2012 if Red Bull Racing chooses not to extend his contract. The Australian has favoured a rolling yearby-year contract at his current outfit, and the team is in no rush to sort out a fresh deal for now.

That has prompted speculation about his future - with Ferrari already being singled out as a possible destination for him if the Italian outfit opts not to extend Felipe Massa’s contract.

Speaking to Italian newspaper La Stampa, Webber has said that

his future is not settled – and that he will only make a call about his plans when Red Bull Racing has made its own mind up. “I have my flaws, but I’m determined,” he told the newspaper. “Last year I fought for the title, and I want to go for it again. I’m relaxed and I feel I can do it, until the end.

“When the season ends my contract with Red Bull will expire. I don’t think a possible renewal depends on the results. I want to win for myself too. We’ll see. “If the team doesn’t want me anymore, I will have to respond to a good question: to hang up the helmet, or to change teams?”

Simoncelli tops Estoril test Marco Simoncelli went some way towards making amends for his Portuguese Grand Prix crash by topping the post-race test at the Estoril circuit today. The Gresini Honda rider had been fastest in Friday practice last weekend and then came close to a maiden pole, only to have an accident just four corners after the start of the race.

But he showed what might have been in today’s test, setting the pace with a 1m36.211s lap to beat championship leader Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) by 0.105 seconds. Casey Stoner was third for Honda, a further 0.2s off the pace.

Cal Crutchlow put in a spectacular performance to take fourth on the Tech 3 Yamaha, with his team-mate Colin Edwards also showing strong

form in sixth. They were split by Valentino Rossi’s Ducati and just ahead of Ben Spies (Yamaha), Andrea Dovizioso (Honda) and Nicky Hayden (Ducati).

Sunday’s race winner Dani Pedrosa was only 10th. Although his shoulder had held up well enough for him to triumph in the grand prix despite recent surgery to remove a plate from his collarbone, he was

feeling the effects of the weekend today and withdrew after 17 laps.

Suzuki’s Alvaro Bautista, still recovering from a broken leg sustained in Qatar, also called a halt to his test early, handing the bike to development rider Nobuatsu Aoki.

Other men on the injured list were Pramac Ducati’s Randy de Puniet, who suffered severe knee pain in yesterday’s race in the wake of recent surgery to remove a screw from an old injury, and Aspar Ducati’s Hector Barbera, who sustained a minor vertebrae fracture in a first-lap fall yesterday. Both chose not to run at all today.

Michael resigns, Coughlan joins Williams WILLIAMS technical director Sam Michael and chief aerodynamicist Jon Tomlinson have resigned from the team, as the outfit announced on Tuesday the appointment of Mike Coughlan as chief engineer.

On the back of a troubled start to the campaign, Michael and Tomlinson have both decided to leave the outfit at the end of the season when their current contracts expire.

Team boss Frank Williams said the departure of the two would allow the team time to sort out replacements that would help turn around its situation.

“Both Sam and Jon are talented

and driven people who have worked hard for Williams over 10 and five years respectively,” he said. “Nonetheless, they have recognised that the team’s performance is not at the level that it needs to be and have resigned in order to give the team the opportunity to regroup and undertake the changes necessary to get back to the front of the grid.

“Both will continue to work in their present positions through until the end of the year to ensure that the team maintains focus and momentum during the 2011 season. We are very grateful to Sam and to Jon for their professional approach.”

In the wake of the decisions of Michael and Tomlinson, Williams has signed former McLaren technical chief Mike Coughlan - who left the Wokingbased team in the wake of the 2007 spy scandal - as its new chief engineer.

Williams said: “Mike Coughlan is a fine engineer with extensive experience across Formula One and both civil and defence engineering.

“He left Formula 1 in 2007 because of conduct which he acknowledges was wrong and which he profoundly regrets. His two year ban from the sport expired some time ago and Mike is now determined to prove himself again.
