Netflix criticised after pulling satire show that criticised Saudi prince

LOS ANGELES - Netflix has removed an episode of a satirical comedy show, apparently in response to criticism from Saudi officials. An episode of Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj included the American-born Muslim comic criticising Saudi Arabia after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. Mr Khashoggi was a fierce critic of the Saudi rulers. The 33-year-old attacked Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, saying: “He has been getting away with autocratic s**t like this for years with almost no blowback from the international community. “It blows my mind that it took the killing of a Washington Post journalist for everyone to go, ‘Oh, I guess he’s really not a reformer.’” Minhaj also criticised the Saudi-led war in Yemen, which he described as “the worst of everything happening in one place”. In a statement, the streaming service said: “We strongly support artistic freedom worldwide and removed this episode only in Saudi Arabia after we had received a valid legal request and to comply with local law.” The removal of the episode came after a complaint from the Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission, which said the episode violated the cyber crime law, according to the Financial Times. Barbie doll prototypes are displayed at a workshop in the Mattel design center as the iconic doll turns 60, in El Segundo, on December 7, 2018.

Barbie will soon be 60 -and is still going strong

EL SEGUNDO - She is turning 60 this year and still doesn’t have a single wrinkle.Blonde or brunette, slender or curvy, black or white, princess or president, Barbie is a forever favorite for young girls, even if she has caused controversy over the years. The iconic doll has evolved to keep up with the times -- check out her Twitter feed. And despite fierce competition in the toy industry, 58 million Barbies are sold each year in more than 150 countries. “In an industry where success today is three to five years, 60 years is a huge deal!” said Nathan Baynard, director of global brand marketing for Barbie. Around the world, Barbie is as universally known as Coca-Cola or McDonald’s, Baynard said during a recent visit to Mattel’s design studio in El Segundo, a

suburb of Los Angeles. In all, more than one billion Barbie dolls have been sold since she made her debut at the American Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. She was invented by Ruth Handler, the co-founder of Mattel, who was inspired by her own children to create the doll. “Her daughter Barbara was limited in the choices of her toys -- the only ones were baby dolls,” Baynard recounted. “The only role she could imagine through that play was caregiver, mother,” whereas Handler’s son “could imagine being an astronaut, cowboy, pilot, surgeon.” Barbie is, of course, a shortened version of Barbara. The doll was supposed to teach girls “that they had choices, that they could be anything. In 1959, it was a radical idea!” Baynard said. Barbie was an instant success. In the first year, 300,000 dolls were sold, he added. (afp)

In this file photo taken on November 25, 2012 German Formula One driver Michael Schumacher poses with the Mercedes team in the pits of the Interlagos racetrack in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Absolute reference of the Formula 1, Michael Schumacher, will turn 50 years old on January 3, 2019.

Schumacher fans urged to celebrate his birthday in rare statement

Michael Schumacher’s family has released a rare statement urging fans to celebrate his birthday as he continues to recover from a head injury. The most decorated star in Formula 1 history has not been seen in public since he fell and hit his head in a skiing accident in the French Alps five years ago. The progress of his recovery has been kept largely secret, at the request of his wife Corinna, but on the eve of his 50th birthday, they released an encouraging statement revealing they will be celebrating his milestone. In a statement, the family said: “We are very happy to celebrate Michael’s 50th birthday tomorrow (today) together with you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts that we can do this together. “As a gift to him, you and us, Keep Fighting Foundation has created a virtual museum. The Official Michael Schumacher App will be released tomorrow, so that we can

review all together Michael’s successes. “The app is another milestone in our effort to do justice to him and you, his fans, by celebrating his accomplishments. We wish you a lot of fun with it. “Michael can be proud of what he has achieved, and so are we! That’s why we remember his successes with the Michael Schumacher Private Collection exhibition in Cologne, by publishing memories in social media and by continuing his charitable work through the Keep Fighting Foundation. “We want to remember and celebrate his victories, his records

and his jubilation. “You can be sure that he is in the very best of hands and that we are doing everything humanly possible to help him. “Please understand if we are following Michael’s wishes and keeping such a sensitive subject as health, as it has always been, in privacy. “At the same time we say thank you very much for your friendship and wish you a healthy and happy year 2019.” Schumacher is understood to be receiving treatment at the family home in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. The decision to keep so much of

his health private has divided even those close to the star. His former manager Willi Weber said it was “unfortunate” his fans did not know about his health, but Ross Brawn, who has visited Schumacher, supports the family decision. Mr Brawn, who worked with Schumacher at Benetton and Ferrari, said: “Michael has always been a very private person and that’s been a guiding principle in his career, his life and his family always agreed with that choice. “It’s completely understandable that Corinna has wanted to maintain the same approach, even after the tragic event, and it’s a decision we must all respect. I’m sure the millions of people who are still Michael fans will understand it, too.” In December, after winning the driver’s F1 championship, Lewis

Hamilton said Michael Schumacher should still be considered Formula 1’s greatest driver of all time. On Schumacher’s birthday, Ferrari will launch an exhibition at their Maranello headquarters in northern Italy, to honour his successes with the Italian team. His son, 19-year-old Mick Schumacher, is being watched closely by both Ferrari and Mercedes, with rumours he could be on the F1 track by 2022. He won F3 in 2018 and will compete in F2 in 2019.(afp) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
