NBC says Hoda Kotb to replace Lauer as ‘Today’ co-anchor NEW YORK - Television host Hoda Kotb was named the new co-anchor of the NBC News “Today” show on Tuesday, replacing former co-host Matt Lauer several weeks after the longtime anchor was fired for inappropriate sexual behavior, according to a network statement.

Kotb will join Savannah Guthrie during the first two hours of the popular program, starting at 7 a.m.

EST (noon GMT), and become the first pair of women to host the show along with weatherman Al Roker and Orange Room host Carson Daly. Kotb will continue co-hosting the 10 a.m. hour of “Today” with Kathie Lee Gifford.

“It’s 2018 and we are kicking off the year right because Hoda is officially the co-anchor of Today,” said Guthrie, 46, who announced the news during the program’s opening moments.

Kotb, 53, quickly filled in as co-host when Lauer was fired on Nov. 28 after a female colleague complained to NBC officials about a pattern of inappropriate sexual

behavior that began while they were on assignment at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia, according to the network.

At least two other women went to NBC with similar complaints against Lauer following the first allegation. None of the women has been publicly identified.

“Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort,” Lauer said after he was fired.

Reuters has not independently verified the accusations.

Kotb joined NBC News in 1998 as a correspondent and has cohosted the fourth hour of “Today” with Gifford since 2008. She also hosts a program on Sirius XM satellite radio.

“Over the past several weeks, Hoda has seamlessly stepped into the co-anchor role alongside Savannah, and the two have quickly hit the ground running,” NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack said in an email to staff, according to Today. com. (rtr)

Storm Eleanor causes flood damage on Ireland’s west coast

GALWAY - Homes and business on Ireland’s west coast suffered flood damage and 27,000 were still without electricity on Wednesday after Storm Eleanor brought heavy rain and winds of up to 155 kilometres per hour.

The storm hit Ireland’s fourth largest city, Galway, particularly hard as high tides late on Tuesday forced road closures and wreaked havoc for shop owners. Ireland’s Electricity Supply Board (ESB) said at one stage

on Tuesday 150,000 homes and business were without electricity.

“We’re really hopeful, given that it’s the last week of a lot of people’s Christmas holidays, that we will have power back to pretty much ev-

erybody by tonight,” Derek Hynes, Operations Manager for ESB, told national broadcaster RTE. The weather service’s second highest level of alert remained in place for the west and northwest of

the country. Met Eireann said a combination of high tides and exceptionally high seas would result in coastal damage and further flooding.

Three people died in October when Tropical Storm Ophelia battered every corner of Ireland, bringing down trees and power lines and whipping up 10-metre (30-foot) waves.(rtr)

YouTuber Logan Paul says suicide video was ‘huge mistake’

LOS ANGELES - American YouTube star Logan Paul on Tuesday apologized for posting a video of a suicide victim in Japan, saying he had made a “huge mistake” and was ashamed of himself.

Paul, 22, whose almost daily video blogs on YouTube have over 15 million followers, apologized for laughing with friends about the body they filmed hanging on a tree in Japan’s so-called “suicide forest” and posted to the video-sharing channel.

Logan deleted the video on Monday after it caused a social media backlash.

“I’ve made a severe and continuous lapse in my judgment and I don’t expect to be forgiven. I’m simply here to apologize,” Paul said in a YouTube video called

“So Sorry.”

He said the shots of he and his friends laughing nervously after the discovery of the body were “raw and unfiltered” reactions and that the video should never have been posted or even filmed.

“I’ve made a huge mistake. I don’t expect to be forgiven... I’m ashamed of myself. I am disappointed,” he added.

Logan shot the video on a visit to Japan’s Aokigahara forest on the slopes of Mount Fuji, that is known for its high number of suicides. He promoted it on his Twitter account

at the weekend as “the craziest and most real video I’ve ever uploaded.”

Reaction was swift with critics calling the video disgusting and tasteless.

“Paul believes he’s ‘making YouTube history’ by vlogging the body of a young person who died by suicide... You’re not Neil Armstrong bro, it’s simply a thing no one else has been tacky enough to do outside rotten. com circa 2000,” tweeted Caitlin Doughty, a Los Angeles mortician and author of “From Here to Eternity.” (rtr)

Mt. Agung spews dark volcanic ashes Besakih Temple untouched AMLAPURA - Mount Agung spewed ash again on Monday night (Jan. 1) at around 22:00 that resulted in ash fall in the area of Selat Village and to the southwest. The material that came out of the volcano was different than in previous eruptions with dark volcanic ash was reported to have spread to Abiansemal, Badung. “It was like flour, but black,” said a 44 year old resident of Gunung Boiau, Muncan Village, Selat named Wayan Kardana, on Tuesday (Jan. 2).

Gunung Biau hamlet is located within the 10 kilometer radius of Mount Agung’s disaster-prone area (KBR). According to Kardana, the ash fall started around 22:30 and lasted until early the next morning. There was also a striking smell of sulfur however both were gone by late morning. “The ashe piled up about had a centimeter”, he explained.

According to information compiled in the field, the volcanic ashe in Karangasem reached the areas of Temukus (upper area of Besakih), Badeg and Yeh Ha hamlets in Sebudi village and Muncan village that are all located wiithin a radius of 8-10 km form the crater of Mount Agung. The volcanic ashes resembling fine sand also reached areas within the safe radius in places like Nongan and Menanga village in the subdistrict of Rendang. The fine volcanic ash also fell at the evacuation post at Rendang Agriculture Unit. Areas east of Selat did not report any volcanic ash fall.

Despite the emission of volcanic ash, people’s activities were not interrupted. In some hamlets of Muncan that are located within the disaster-prone area there are still people who have not evacuated.

Magma-VAR Indonesia reported that the an eruption on Monday night took place for 240 seconds with an amplitude of 25 mm and the thick volcanic ash reached a height of 1,500 meters. The eruption was followed by several emissions of white smoke and volcanic ash that reached the Rendang Monitoring Post. “Yes, the earthquake of an eruption was observed”, said Subdivision Head of Volcano for Eastern Indonesia Region, Devy Kamil Syahbana.

Due to wind, some of the ash reached Badung as well.

Although some areas of Karangasem were hit with wuite thick ash, Besakih Temple located about 6 km from the top of Mt. Agung did not have any ash fall.

A volunteer named Ketut Wijaya Mataram said that Besakih Temple and surrounding areas were not explosed to volcanic ash. Vegetation that had been disrupted by previous

ash fall was looking green again, he said.

At 07:00 on Tuesday morning, said Wijaya he saw no trace of volcanic ash at Besakih Temple. “The ash did not fall at Besakih Temple while Temukus and Sebidu village did have some ash fall. The summit of Mount Agung was clearly visible and in the sunshine I saw a blast from the crater, but by midday it was covered with clouds”, he said.

around Besakih Temple and both tourists and locals were busy on Monday morning after celebrating New Years.

Local residents did come to pray on the full moon of the seventh month of the Balinese calendar. One or two tourists were seen but appeared to be looking for adventure rather than a casual strol. “They were carrying big backpacks. I suspect they want to climb the mountain”, he concluded. (117)

Rabies infected animals on decline in Tabanan

TABANAN - The success of the mass vaccinations that have been carried out is starting to be seen in Tabanan. In 2015 there were a total of 55 reported cases of dogs and cows infected with rabies while in 2017 this umber was down to 29 cases. In 2017 there were just 5 cases of rabies in infection in RCA (rabies carriers animals) in Tabanan.

Head of the Tabanan Agriculture and Horticulture Agency, I Nyoman Budana, accompanied by Section Head of Animal Health, I Gusti Ngurah Wiksuara, said on Tuesday (Jan. 2) that the five cases of RCA animals in Tabanan that were found

to be infected were located in Anyar hamlet (Kediri), Gerokgak Gede hamlet, Delod Peken (Tabanan), Batungsel village (Pupuan) where the positive RCA was cow and one dog in Bajra village (Selemadeg).

The declining number of rabies infected RCA, said Budana, is due to the yearly rabies vaccinations that are held on a mass scale. Mass rabies vaccinations remain a top priority in 2018 with the expectation that a rabies-free Bali can be achieved by 2020.

A total of 58, 021 RCA were vaccinated in Tabanan in 2017 consisting of 56,791 dogs, 1,207 cats and 23 monkeys. Of Tabanan’s

10 subdistricts, the largest number of RCAs were vaccinated in the sub-district of Kediri (7,813), followed by Tabanan (7,454), Penebel (6,579), Pupuan (6,406), Kerambitan (5,816), West Selemadeg (5,412), Baturiti (5,211), Marga (5,132), Selemadeg (4,570) and East Selemadeg (3,628).

Wiksuara however added that the total dog population of Tabanan is estimated to reach 60,000 while only 56,791 dogs were vaccinated.

“Estimations are only approximate and maybe the total dog population is less that estimated, this cold result in more than 100 percent

vaccination rates. These estimate of course also affect the provision of vaccines from the central government”, explained Wiksuara.

The estimated population of dogs has not been calculated for 2018, but based on last year’s estimate the population could be over 60,000. The mass vaccinations for 2018 will follow the same procedures as last year, he added.

“There are two teams involved, one waits for people to bring their pets in to get vaccinated, while the other actively involved in combing the streets for stray dogs or gods that are not kept on a leash”, said Wiksuara.

There were no dog eliminations last yea as there was no budget for the provision of necessary substances and the same is true this year. Eliminations are done by the provincial government with the assistance of human resources from the district government.

Elimination is done selectively in areas where rabies positive cases of RCA occur. “In 2017, there were some eliminations but they were conducted by the provincial government who had the necessary substances. We help in terms of human resources”, explained Wiksuara. (kmb24)

Traumatic events increase headaches and migraines

OSLO - Teens exposed to traumatic or terror events may have a higher risk for weekly and daily migraines, according to a study of adolescents who survived a terror attack in Norway.

The findings further the idea that violence and psychological trauma could lead to physical symptoms.

“We have very little systematic knowledge about the physical consequences of terror and violent events, especially since people may not see the association or go to the doctor,” said study author Dr. Synne Stensland of the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies at the University of Oslo.

“There are people who are not getting the help they need for their physical and psychological complaints, especially when they become more severe or frequent,” she told Reuters Health by phone.

On July 22, 2011, a lone gunman opened fire on the annual Norwegian Labor Party youth summer camp. The man, disguised as a policeman, killed 69 people and severely wounded 33. Many of the 358 survivors saw what happened and risked hypothermia and drowning trying to escape. Most lost friends.

The survivors have been part of several studies to understand how terror and trauma affect adolescents.

In this study, published in the journal Neurology, Stensland and colleagues looked at recurrent migraines and tension-type headaches in 213 of the survivors, ages 13 to 20. Trained personnel interviewed the survivors about four months after the attack, again 18 months afterward, and again three years after the attack.

The research team found the terror attack survivors reported many recurring tension-type headaches and migraines, and headaches were generally more common in girls. In particular, the female survivors reported three times more weekly or daily headaches than similar young women in the general population in Norway.

Posttraumatic psychological distress levels were much higher, too.

“We were surprised . . . the link was so strong between terror and headaches, even though we accounted for (many other factors),” Stensland said.

Future studies will continue to observe the physical and psychological symptoms that these teens experience. (rtr)

NEW YORK - Normal immune cells that live near milk ducts in healthy breast tissue may play a key role in helping early breast cancer cells leave the breast for other parts of the body, researchers say.

This could possibly cause cancer to metastasize, or spread, even before a tumor has developed, according to Dr. Julio Aguirre-Ghiso of The Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and colleagues. The study was published online January 2 in Nature Communications.

In previous work, the team identified a group of early cancer cells that get disseminated into the body during the earliest stages of breast cancer, before any cancer can be detected.

In the current study, they report that immune cells called macrophages play an important part in this process. Working in mice and in human cells in the laboratory, the team found that dissemination occurs when macrophages are attracted to the milk ducts, where they trigger a chain reaction that enables the early cancer cells to leave the breast.

“We show that by disrupting this (process), we can prevent early dissemination and, ultimately, deadly metastasis,” Aguirre-Ghiso said in an email to Reuters Health.

“Our study challenges the dogma that early diagnosis and treatment means sure cure,” he said.

It could also be a “starting point” for a test that could identify patients with the earliest form of breast cancer, known as ductal cell carcinoma in situ, who may already have disseminated disease, he suggested.

Future work will involve identifying the type of macrophages involved in early dissemination and exactly how the process occurs, which potentially could lead to the development of novel therapies to prevent it.

The kind of large, double-blind clinical trial that could prove this approach is still far in the future, Aguirre-Ghiso noted.

“Even so,” he said, “our findings point to the notion that early treatment of high-risk patients may prevent the formation of deadly metastasis better than the current standard of treating metastatic disease (only after it has appeared).” (rtr)

SEMARAPURA — Tourism sector becomes one of the contributors to regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Klungkung. To maximize the management, the district government plans it will no longer be done directly by Tourism Office, but through a special governing body. It is targeted to have been formed this year. Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, delivered this not long ago.

Establishment of the governing body is intended for tourism in Klungkung mainland, namely the city tour and Nusa Penida Islands now increasingly becoming the target of tourists. According to him, it will be able to accelerate the handling of problems in the field. “The governing body is being established and will only be coordinated with the district government regarding what to be done so that it can compete and make decisions more quickly. Thus, tourism office will no longer be busy managing them,” he said.

This regent from Nusa Ceningan did not dismiss that until now the tourism sector has not been able to run optimally. Especially in Nusa Penida, the entrance is quite a lot so that it triggers inconvenience.

“With the governing body, these things can be immediately handled.

The number of visits can be recorded well,” he said.

Head of the Klungkung Tourism Office, I Nengah Sukasta, said on Monday (Jan. 1) the establishment of governing body is still in the stage of study. District government is still coordinating with related agencies. “For instance, we also

communicate to Klungkung Grand Palace related to the city tour, while in Nusa Penida we discuss with community figures. Now, the discussion is still under progress whether the agency is in cooperation with the regional company or anything else,” he explained.

The policy is targeted to be realized this year. His office also claimed to continuously make efforts to accelerate. “The governing body will be equipped with related division such as promotion,” said this former Head of Klungkung Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency.

Secretary of Commission II of the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Wayan Buda Parwata, stated the attention of district government to tourism sector is not only limited to the management pattern, but also to the increase in the quality of human resources and facilities of the objects remaining relatively lacking. “The formation must be supported by adequate human resources as well as infrastructure. Today, it has not been maximized like the city tour. There is no maximum movement of the people on the destination. Besides, the innovation is still inadequate,” he said.

If the two aspects do not get serious attention, this Hanura politician judged the establishment of the governing body will be in vain.

“The governing body should be filled with people who understand about tourism and master foreign languages. Otherwise, the governing body will be useless,” he concluded. (kmb45)

The breakwater development is carried out in two stages. The first stage is 100 meters long and currently under construction. Second stage will work on the addition of 50 meters. HONG KONG - A former senior Hong Kong police officer was sentenced to three months jail on Wednesday for assaulting a passerby with his baton during the city’s massive pro-democracy protests of late 2014.

The “Umbrella Movement” demonstrations which occupied major roads and demanded, in vain, full democracy for the former British colony, was one of the most direct populist challenges to Beijing’s Communist Party leaders since the city came under Chinese rule in 1997.

During the civil disobedience movement that ran for 79 straight days, protesters, sometimes numbering in their thousands, faced off repeatedly with the police who used batons, tear gas and pepper spray -- drawing some criticism for the excessive use of force.

Retired superintendent Frankly Chu, 58, showed no obvious emotion when principal magistrate Bina Chainrai sentenced him to four months jail for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

This was mitigated to three months given his retirement and the unlikeli-

hood of him reoffending.

Chainrai said the sentence was necessary so that public confidence in the police force could be maintained and that the police had a “duty to uphold standards”.

Chu was filmed hitting a man on the neck with a baton during a protest in the Mong Kok district in 2014, targeting what some deemed to be a high-risk part of the body.

Chu, however, said during the trial that his use of force had been appropriate and that he was carrying out orders from his superiors to move protesters away from that area.

Chu’s lawyer, Peter Pannu, said his client would appeal.

A Hong Kong court last February also sentenced seven policemen to two years behind bars for beating a handcuffed activist during the 2014 protests. The seven have been released on bail pending appeal.

The assaults by the seven policemen, and Chu, were captured on video and widely broadcast, triggering public outrage and tarnishing the reputation of the Hong Kong police force that has sometimes been dubbed “Asia’s finest”. (rtr)

In value terms, South Korean exports surged to their highest on record in 2017 thanks to soaring global demand for memory chips, cars and petrochemical products. The government sees exports growing 4 percent this year, slowing from the 15.8 percent growth in 2017. In terms of the value of goods sold, South Korea exported $573.9 billion in 2017, marking it the best year since 1956 when such records began.

At the same time, the strong won has been a point of pain for local manufacturers. A think tank from Hyundai Motor last month flagged risks from the won’s strength against the Japanese yen, warning current levels could hurt demand for South Korean cars in markets such as Europe and the U.S. in the year ahead.

Citing its Hyundai Sonata sedan as example, Lee Bo-sung, a director at the think tank, said the model was only 2 percent cheaper than Honda’s Accord as of 2017 in the U.S. market, compared with 10 percent in 2011.

The won snapped six days of gains and weakened 0.3 percent against the dollar on Wednesday but closed just below its three-year high of 1,064.5 per dollar, hit on Tuesday. (rtr)

Asia’s fourth largest economy is highly reliant on shipments of high-end goods such as ships, automobiles and electronics for its growth but also had one of the region’s hottest currencies in 2017, which has weighed on its export competitiveness.

People familiar with matter told Reuters on Wednesday the nation’s foreign exchange authorities may look into ways to spur investment abroad should the local currency appreciate on a consistent basis. This would be separate to regulators’ market operations to curb the won’s volatility, which would still be conducted when required.

A spokesperson for the finance ministry, which is responsible for foreign exchange regulation, declined to comment on the matter. The sources did not provide details on the potential measures and declined to elaborate when asked if the steps could include tax breaks similar to those announced in 2015.

Back then, South Korea offered up to 10 years in tax exemptions on investment gains from funds that put more than 60 percent of assets into overseas stocks. The scheme took effect in February 2016 and expired in December. Rising domestic interest rates, strong exports and heightened U.S. scrutiny on South Korea’s foreign exchange regime have made it harder for Seoul to tame the won, which rose 13 percent last year, its best annual gain in 13 years.

U.S. threatens to withhold aid cash to Palestinians

UNITED NATIONS - U.S. President Donald Trump said in tweets on Tuesday that the United States may withhold future aid payments to Palestinians, accusing them of being “no longer willing to talk peace” with Israel.

Trump said that Washington gives Palestinians “HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel ... with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”

The President’s tweets follow plans disclosed by his U.N. ambassador earlier on Tuesday to stop funding a United Nations agency that provides humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees.

“The President has basically said he doesn’t want to give any additional funding, or stop funding, until the Palestinians agree to come back to the negotiation table,” Ambassador Nikki Haley told reporters when asked about future U.S. funding for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees.

The U.S. is the largest donor to the agency, with a

pledge of nearly $370 million as of 2016, according to UNRWA’s website.

Relations between the Palestinians and Washington soured early last month after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, generating outrage across the Arab world and concern among Washington’s Western allies.

Weeks later, more than 120 countries defied Trump and voted in favor of a U.N. General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to drop its stance on Jerusalem’s status.

“What we saw with the resolution was not helpful to the situation,” Haley said on Tuesday.

“The Palestinians now have to show to the world that they want to come to the table. As of now, they’re not coming to the table but they asked for aid. We’re not giving the aid, we’re going to make sure that they come to the table and we want to move forward with the peace process,” she said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called the Trump administration’s decision on Jerusalem the “greatest crime” and a flagrant violation of international law, and said it was unacceptable for the United States to have a role in the Middle East peace process because it was biased in favor of Israel. Iran’s leader blames enemies for deadly unrest, US calls that “nonsense”

LONDON - Iran’s supreme leader accused the country’s enemies on Tuesday of being behind days of street unrest, as the death toll from anti-government demonstrations rose to 21.

Riot police were out in force in several cities on the sixth day of protests, which spread to the northwestern city of Tabriz, according to social media posts, as security forces scrambled to contain the boldest challenge to Iran’s leadership since 2009.

More than 450 protesters have been arrested in the capital in the last three days, Tehran’s deputy provincial governor said, and hundreds of others were detained around the country. A judicial official said some could face the death penalty.

In the southwestern city of Ahvaz, police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators.

“Police shot tear gas and later went around asking shops on two main streets to close, to completely clear the area,” a resident told Reuters by telephone.

Nine people were killed in Isfahan province during protests on Monday night, including two members of the security forces, state TV said. Six protesters were killed during an attack on a police station in the town of Qahderijan in that province. The local governor said the protesters were armed.

“We all know that’s complete nonsense,” said Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

The protests began in Iran`s second city of Mashhad in the northeast on Thursday and spread to Tehran and the other urban centers. Iranians vented their ire over a sharp rise in the prices of basic necessities, such as eggs, and a government`s proposal to hike fuel prices in next year`s budget.

Some protesters also expressed their rage over the high rate of unemployment and savings that were lost after investments in unlicensed credit and financial institutions turned sour.

The demonstrations, initially focused on economic hardships and alleged corruption, turned into political rallies. The police have arrested more than 450 protesters in the capital city of Tehran over the past three days.

Damaged suspension SAR team evacuates ship and bridge kills two, injures 35 crew members in Aceh waters

BOGOR - Two people were killed and 35 others injured after they fell from a cut-off suspension bridge into a river at Sidangrasa village, in Bogor District, West Java Province.

The ill-fated suspension bridge was found cut-off on Monday, chief of the Tanjungsari police sector, First Inspector Muhaimin said, adding that five people had sustained

serious injuries.

One of the victims was a female named Nemih (50) from Bekasi District, who died in the hospital.

The 44-meter long suspension bridge was made of bamboo and was commonly used by local residents.

Majority of the victims suffered a broken bone after falling from the six-meter-high suspension bridge into the rocky river. (ant)

ACEH - The joint Search and Rescue Team successfully evacuated a unit of fishing boat, along with three crew members on board in the middle of the sea in Aceh Jaya district, Aceh province.

Coordinator of the Meulaboh Search and Rescue Team (SAR) Dwi Hetno, said here on Tuesday night, that the ship was unable to sail due to its engine trouble, causing it to wobble

and needed to be pulled to the coast.

“The joint SAR team succeeded in pulling the boat to Kuala Rigaih Setia Bakti Sub-district, Aceh Jaya District this night,” he said through a written report received by Antara.

The report revealed that all three boat crew members survived after being stranded for a couple of days.

The three victims were identified as Zul (35) from Meureubo Village,

West Aceh, Acim (27) resident of Blang Beurandang, Johan Pahlawan and Nurdin (27) resident of Ujong Kalak, Johan Pahlawan sub-district, West Aceh.

Dwi Hetno stated that the estimated distance from Meulaboh waters to the location of where the ship was found was about 40 miles from the coast of West Aceh or approximately 20 miles from the coast of Aceh Jaya. (ant)

ALTENMARKT - It is not just American hopes that will be riding on the performance of Mikaela Shiffrin when the world’s top woman alpine skier takes to the slopes at the Winter Olympics in South Korea next month.

Half a world away in the small Austrian town of Altenmarkt, the marketing and tech teams at ski manufacturer Atomic will be closely watching the medal count in Pyeongchang, the culmination of about 18 months of internal company planning.

Of 900 staff based at the company south of Salzburg, 38 are part of a team of international specialists, whose job is to develop eversleeker and more manoeuvrable skis for everything from racing to backcountry touring.

Whereas in the early 1990s design was revolutionised by switching from long, straight racing skis to a side-cut ‘parabolic’ shape, and later shifts focused on the camber, or arch, of the ski, the trend in recent years has been

towards more advanced materials such as titanium.

Atomic General Manager Wolfgang Mayrhofer said the thinner, less dense materials, including lighter wood cores, and the deeper sidecuts permitted under new giant slalom rules have made a big difference to the skis.

“The skis are easier to turn,” said Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, the sixtimes overall World Cup champion who is bidding for his first Olympic gold medal in Pyeongchang.

“But now with the new materials they can ski different lines, they keep the same stability and rigidity but they are much more flexible, much more dampening.

“So it’s big progress since the Sochi days, since the last Olympics.”

HEAD TO HEAD In the speed events of downhill and super-G there has been no fundamental change to ski design in the past 10 years, according to Matt

Humphreys, winter sports boss at HEAD UK, but new materials have changed their composition.

Austria-based HEAD, whose skis are used by Olympic champions Lindsey Vonn, Ted Ligety, Kjetil Jansrud and Aksel Lund Svindal, have said it is the only manufacturer to incorporate graphene, a super-thin, super-strong form of carbon that was isolated by scientists only in 2004.

The point is not to make racing skis lighter, as a heavier ski provides more stability for a downhill racer hitting speeds around 90 miles/hour (145 km/h) but to improve the flexibility and the distribution of power.

“With us using graphene, we can get the flex pattern exactly how we want it to be ... the more we put in, the stiffer and stronger the ski becomes,” said Humphreys.

That cutting edge design does not end with the ski.

Minute, detailed effort goes into the fit and comfort of boots as

well as their ‘canting’ - the slight inward- or outward-tilting angle of the shoe that is tailored to match the angle of the skier’s knees.

“Where we try and get ahead of the game is with some of our top

athletes,” Humphreys said.

“We do have casts of their feet and their lower legs so we can work on them in terms of pressure points and customisation without the athlete having to be there.” (rtr)

Barcelona’s record signing Ousmane Dembele is set to return from a long injury layoff in Thursday’s Copa del Rey match against Celta Vigo, the club has said.

Dembele, who joined Barcelona for a 105 million euro ($126.60 million) fee that could rise to 147 million, from Borussia Dortmund in August, made only three appearances for the La Liga side before rupturing his hamstring against Getafe on Sept. 16.

The 20-year-old French forward, who had a surgery in Finland, returned to training in December and received his medical discharge on Tuesday.

ALTENMARKT - It is not just American hopes that will be riding on the performance of Mikaela Shiffrin when the world’s top woman alpine skier takes to the slopes at the Winter Olympics in South Korea next month.

Half a world away in the small Austrian town of Altenmarkt, the marketing and tech teams at ski manufacturer Atomic will be closely watching the medal count in Pyeongchang, the culmination of about 18 months of internal company planning.

Of 900 staff based at the company south of Salzburg, 38 are part of a team of international specialists, whose job is to develop eversleeker and more manoeuvrable skis for everything from racing to backcountry touring.

Whereas in the early 1990s design was revolutionised by switching from long, straight racing skis to a side-cut ‘parabolic’ shape, and later shifts focused on the camber, or arch, of the ski, the trend in recent years has been

towards more advanced materials such as titanium.

Atomic General Manager Wolfgang Mayrhofer said the thinner, less dense materials, including lighter wood cores, and the deeper sidecuts permitted under new giant slalom rules have made a big difference to the skis.

“The skis are easier to turn,” said Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, the sixtimes overall World Cup champion who is bidding for his first Olympic gold medal in Pyeongchang.

“But now with the new materials they can ski different lines, they keep the same stability and rigidity but they are much more flexible, much more dampening.

“So it’s big progress since the Sochi days, since the last Olympics.”

HEAD TO HEAD In the speed events of downhill and super-G there has been no fundamental change to ski design in the past 10 years, according to Matt

Humphreys, winter sports boss at HEAD UK, but new materials have changed their composition.

Austria-based HEAD, whose skis are used by Olympic champions Lindsey Vonn, Ted Ligety, Kjetil Jansrud and Aksel Lund Svindal, have said it is the only manufacturer to incorporate graphene, a super-thin, super-strong form of carbon that was isolated by scientists only in 2004.

The point is not to make racing skis lighter, as a heavier ski provides more stability for a downhill racer hitting speeds around 90 miles/hour (145 km/h) but to improve the flexibility and the distribution of power.

“With us using graphene, we can get the flex pattern exactly how we want it to be ... the more we put in, the stiffer and stronger the ski becomes,” said Humphreys.

That cutting edge design does not end with the ski.

Minute, detailed effort goes into the fit and comfort of boots as

well as their ‘canting’ - the slight inward- or outward-tilting angle of the shoe that is tailored to match the angle of the skier’s knees.

“Where we try and get ahead of the game is with some of our top

athletes,” Humphreys said.

“We do have casts of their feet and their lower legs so we can work on them in terms of pressure points and customisation without the athlete having to be there.” (rtr)

U.S. threatens to withhold aid cash to Palestinians

UNITED NATIONS - U.S. President Donald Trump said in tweets on Tuesday that the United States may withhold future aid payments to Palestinians, accusing them of being “no longer willing to talk peace” with Israel.

Trump said that Washington gives Palestinians “HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel ... with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”

The President’s tweets follow plans disclosed by his U.N. ambassador earlier on Tuesday to stop funding a United Nations agency that provides humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees.

“The President has basically said he doesn’t want to give any additional funding, or stop funding, until the Palestinians agree to come back to the negotiation table,” Ambassador Nikki Haley told reporters when asked about future U.S. funding for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees.

The U.S. is the largest donor to the agency, with a

pledge of nearly $370 million as of 2016, according to UNRWA’s website.

Relations between the Palestinians and Washington soured early last month after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, generating outrage across the Arab world and concern among Washington’s Western allies.

Weeks later, more than 120 countries defied Trump and voted in favor of a U.N. General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to drop its stance on Jerusalem’s status.

“What we saw with the resolution was not helpful to the situation,” Haley said on Tuesday.

“The Palestinians now have to show to the world that they want to come to the table. As of now, they’re not coming to the table but they asked for aid. We’re not giving the aid, we’re going to make sure that they come to the table and we want to move forward with the peace process,” she said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called the Trump administration’s decision on Jerusalem the “greatest crime” and a flagrant violation of international law, and said it was unacceptable for the United States to have a role in the Middle East peace process because it was biased in favor of Israel. Iran’s leader blames enemies for deadly unrest, US calls that “nonsense”

LONDON - Iran’s supreme leader accused the country’s enemies on Tuesday of being behind days of street unrest, as the death toll from anti-government demonstrations rose to 21.

Riot police were out in force in several cities on the sixth day of protests, which spread to the northwestern city of Tabriz, according to social media posts, as security forces scrambled to contain the boldest challenge to Iran’s leadership since 2009.

More than 450 protesters have been arrested in the capital in the last three days, Tehran’s deputy provincial governor said, and hundreds of others were detained around the country. A judicial official said some could face the death penalty.

In the southwestern city of Ahvaz, police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators.

“Police shot tear gas and later went around asking shops on two main streets to close, to completely clear the area,” a resident told Reuters by telephone.

Nine people were killed in Isfahan province during protests on Monday night, including two members of the security forces, state TV said. Six protesters were killed during an attack on a police station in the town of Qahderijan in that province. The local governor said the protesters were armed.

Khamenei accused Iran’s foes of fomenting the unrest, which began as protests about economic hardship and corruption but have grown into political rallies, some of which have criticised him by name.

“In recent days, enemies of Iran used different tools including cash, weapons, politics and intelligence apparatus to create troubles for the Islamic Republic,” he said, in his first reaction to the unrest.

He did not name the enemies but Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, said the United States, Britain and Saudi Arabia were behind the riots.

“Saudis will receive Iran’s unexpected response and they know how serious it can be,” Shamkhani was quoted by Tasnim news as saying in an interview with Beirut-based Al Mayadeen TV. Khamenei said on his website that he would address the nation about the events “when the time is right”.

The United States rejected the suggestion that the protests were the work of foreign powers.

“We all know that’s complete nonsense,” said Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

“The demonstrations are completely spontaneous. They are virtually in every city in Iran. This is the precise picture of a long oppressed people rising up against their dictators.” (rtr)

Damaged suspension SAR team evacuates ship and bridge kills two, injures 35 crew members in Aceh waters

BOGOR - Two people were killed and 35 others injured after they fell from a cut-off suspension bridge into a river at Sidangrasa village, in Bogor District, West Java Province.

The ill-fated suspension bridge was found cut-off on Monday, chief of the Tanjungsari police sector, First Inspector Muhaimin said, adding that five people had sustained

serious injuries.

One of the victims was a female named Nemih (50) from Bekasi District, who died in the hospital.

The 44-meter long suspension bridge was made of bamboo and was commonly used by local residents.

Majority of the victims suffered a broken bone after falling from the six-meter-high suspension bridge into the rocky river. (ant)

ACEH - The joint Search and Rescue Team successfully evacuated a unit of fishing boat, along with three crew members on board in the middle of the sea in Aceh Jaya district, Aceh province.

Coordinator of the Meulaboh Search and Rescue Team (SAR) Dwi Hetno, said here on Tuesday night, that the ship was unable to sail due to its engine trouble, causing it to wobble

and needed to be pulled to the coast.

“The joint SAR team succeeded in pulling the boat to Kuala Rigaih Setia Bakti Sub-district, Aceh Jaya District this night,” he said through a written report received by Antara.

The report revealed that all three boat crew members survived after being stranded for a couple of days.

The three victims were identified as Zul (35) from Meureubo Village,

West Aceh, Acim (27) resident of Blang Beurandang, Johan Pahlawan and Nurdin (27) resident of Ujong Kalak, Johan Pahlawan sub-district, West Aceh.

Dwi Hetno stated that the estimated distance from Meulaboh waters to the location of where the ship was found was about 40 miles from the coast of West Aceh or approximately 20 miles from the coast of Aceh Jaya. (ant)

In value terms, South Korean exports surged to their highest on record in 2017 thanks to soaring global demand for memory chips, cars and petrochemical products. The government sees exports growing 4 percent this year, slowing from the 15.8 percent growth in 2017. In terms of the value of goods sold, South Korea exported $573.9 billion in 2017, marking it the best year since 1956 when such records began.

At the same time, the strong won has been a point of pain for local manufacturers. A think tank from Hyundai Motor last month flagged risks from the won’s strength against the Japanese yen, warning current levels could hurt demand for South Korean cars in markets such as Europe and the U.S. in the year ahead.

Citing its Hyundai Sonata sedan as example, Lee Bo-sung, a director at the think tank, said the model was only 2 percent cheaper than Honda’s Accord as of 2017 in the U.S. market, compared with 10 percent in 2011.

Asia’s fourth largest economy is highly reliant on shipments of high-end goods such as ships, automobiles and electronics for its growth but also had one of the region’s hottest currencies in 2017, which has weighed on its export competitiveness.

People familiar with matter told Reuters on Wednesday the nation’s foreign exchange authorities may look into ways to spur investment abroad should the local currency appreciate on a consistent basis. This would be separate to regulators’ market operations to curb the won’s volatility, which would still be conducted when required.

A spokesperson for the finance ministry, which is responsible for foreign exchange regulation, declined to comment on the matter. The sources did not provide details on the potential measures and declined to elaborate when asked if the steps could include tax breaks similar to those announced in 2015.

Back then, South Korea offered up to 10 years in tax exemptions on investment gains from funds that put more than 60 percent of assets into overseas stocks. The scheme took effect in February 2016 and expired in December. Rising domestic interest rates, strong exports and heightened U.S. scrutiny on South Korea’s foreign exchange regime have made it harder for Seoul to tame the won, which rose 13 percent last year, its best annual gain in 13 years.

Officials on both sides were checking the line and conducting a conversation for about 20 minutes, the contents of which were not disclosed by the ministry.

That gesture came only hours after Trump, who has mocked Kim as “Little Rocket Man”, again ridiculed the North Korean leader on Twitter.

“Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much

bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” Trump tweeted.

Trump and Kim have exchanged a series of bellicose comments in recent months, raising alarm across the world, with Trump at times dismissing the prospect of a diplomatic solution to a crisis in which North Korea has threatened to destroy the United States.

While appearing to open the door to discussing taking part in the Winter Olympics, Kim also warned that he would push ahead with “mass producing” nuclear warheads in defiance of U.N. sanctions.

HONG KONG - A former senior Hong Kong police officer was sentenced to three months jail on Wednesday for assaulting a passerby with his baton during the city’s massive pro-democracy protests of late 2014.

The “Umbrella Movement” demonstrations which occupied major roads and demanded, in vain, full democracy for the former British colony, was one of the most direct populist challenges to Beijing’s Communist Party leaders since the city came under Chinese rule in 1997.

During the civil disobedience movement that ran for 79 straight days, protesters, sometimes numbering in their thousands, faced off repeatedly with the police who used batons, tear gas and pepper spray -- drawing some criticism for the excessive use of force.

Retired superintendent Frankly Chu, 58, showed no obvious emotion when principal magistrate Bina Chainrai sentenced him to four months jail for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

This was mitigated to three months given his retirement and the unlikeli-

hood of him reoffending.

Chainrai said the sentence was necessary so that public confidence in the police force could be maintained and that the police had a “duty to uphold standards”.

Chu was filmed hitting a man on the neck with a baton during a protest in the Mong Kok district in 2014, targeting what some deemed to be a high-risk part of the body.

Chu, however, said during the trial that his use of force had been appropriate and that he was carrying out orders from his superiors to move protesters away from that area.

Chu’s lawyer, Peter Pannu, said his client would appeal.

A Hong Kong court last February also sentenced seven policemen to two years behind bars for beating a handcuffed activist during the 2014 protests. The seven have been released on bail pending appeal.

The assaults by the seven policemen, and Chu, were captured on video and widely broadcast, triggering public outrage and tarnishing the reputation of the Hong Kong police force that has sometimes been dubbed “Asia’s finest”. (rtr)

Traumatic events increase headaches and migraines

OSLO - Teens exposed to traumatic or terror events may have a higher risk for weekly and daily migraines, according to a study of adolescents who survived a terror attack in Norway.

The findings further the idea that violence and psychological trauma could lead to physical symptoms.

“We have very little systematic knowledge about the physical consequences of terror and violent events, especially since people may not see the association or go to the doctor,” said study author Dr. Synne Stensland of the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies at the University of Oslo.

“There are people who are not getting the help they need for their physical and psychological complaints, especially when they become more severe or frequent,” she told Reuters Health by phone.

On July 22, 2011, a lone gunman opened fire on the annual Norwegian Labor Party youth summer camp. The man, disguised as a policeman, killed 69 people and severely wounded 33. Many of the 358 survivors saw what happened and risked hypothermia and drowning trying to escape. Most lost friends.

The survivors have been part of several studies to understand how terror and trauma affect adolescents.

In this study, published in the journal Neurology, Stensland and colleagues looked at recurrent migraines and tension-type headaches in 213 of the survivors, ages 13 to 20. Trained personnel interviewed the survivors about four months after the attack, again 18 months afterward, and again three years after the attack.

The research team found the terror attack survivors reported many recurring tension-type headaches and migraines, and headaches were generally more common in girls. In particular, the female survivors reported three times more weekly or daily headaches than similar young women in the general population in Norway.

Posttraumatic psychological distress levels were much higher, too.

“We were surprised . . . the link was so strong between terror and headaches, even though we accounted for (many other factors),” Stensland said.

Future studies will continue to observe the physical and psychological symptoms that these teens experience. (rtr)

NEW YORK - Normal immune cells that live near milk ducts in healthy breast tissue may play a key role in helping early breast cancer cells leave the breast for other parts of the body, researchers say.

This could possibly cause cancer to metastasize, or spread, even before a tumor has developed, according to Dr. Julio Aguirre-Ghiso of The Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and colleagues. The study was published online January 2 in Nature Communications.

In previous work, the team identified a group of early cancer cells that get disseminated into the body during the earliest stages of breast cancer, before any cancer can be detected.

In the current study, they report that immune cells called macrophages play an important part in this process. Working in mice and in human cells in the laboratory, the team found that dissemination occurs when macrophages are attracted to the milk ducts, where they trigger a chain reaction that enables the early cancer cells to leave the breast.

“We show that by disrupting this (process), we can prevent early dissemination and, ultimately, deadly metastasis,” Aguirre-Ghiso said in an email to Reuters Health.

“Our study challenges the dogma that early diagnosis and treatment means sure cure,” he said.

It could also be a “starting point” for a test that could identify patients with the earliest form of breast cancer, known as ductal cell carcinoma in situ, who may already have disseminated disease, he suggested.

Future work will involve identifying the type of macrophages involved in early dissemination and exactly how the process occurs, which potentially could lead to the development of novel therapies to prevent it.

The kind of large, double-blind clinical trial that could prove this approach is still far in the future, Aguirre-Ghiso noted.

“Even so,” he said, “our findings point to the notion that early treatment of high-risk patients may prevent the formation of deadly metastasis better than the current standard of treating metastatic disease (only after it has appeared).” (rtr)

SEMARAPURA — Tourism sector becomes one of the contributors to regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Klungkung. To maximize the management, the district government plans it will no longer be done directly by Tourism Office, but through a special governing body. It is targeted to have been formed this year. Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, delivered this not long ago.

Establishment of the governing body is intended for tourism in Klungkung mainland, namely the city tour and Nusa Penida Islands now increasingly becoming the target of tourists. According to him, it will be able to accelerate the handling of problems in the field. “The governing body is being established and will only be coordinated with the district government regarding what to be done so that it can compete and make decisions more quickly. Thus, tourism office will no longer be busy managing them,” he said.

This regent from Nusa Ceningan did not dismiss that until now the tourism sector has not been able to run optimally. Especially in Nusa Penida, the entrance is quite a lot so that it triggers inconvenience.

“With the governing body, these things can be immediately handled.

The number of visits can be recorded well,” he said.

Head of the Klungkung Tourism Office, I Nengah Sukasta, said on Monday (Jan. 1) the establishment of governing body is still in the stage of study. District government is still coordinating with related agencies. “For instance, we also

communicate to Klungkung Grand Palace related to the city tour, while in Nusa Penida we discuss with community figures. Now, the discussion is still under progress whether the agency is in cooperation with the regional company or anything else,” he explained.

The policy is targeted to be realized this year. His office also claimed to continuously make efforts to accelerate. “The governing body will be equipped with related division such as promotion,” said this former Head of Klungkung Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency.

Secretary of Commission II of the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Wayan Buda Parwata, stated the attention of district government to tourism sector is not only limited to the management pattern, but also to the increase in the quality of human resources and facilities of the objects remaining relatively lacking. “The formation must be supported by adequate human resources as well as infrastructure. Today, it has not been maximized like the city tour. There is no maximum movement of the people on the destination. Besides, the innovation is still inadequate,” he said.

If the two aspects do not get serious attention, this Hanura politician judged the establishment of the governing body will be in vain.

“The governing body should be filled with people who understand about tourism and master foreign languages. Otherwise, the governing body will be useless,” he concluded. (kmb45)

It regards the addition of the dock length to 300 meters and the width of the harbor from currently 12 meters to 24 meters. The presence of cruise ship pier is projected to revive the tourism sector that currently slumps due to volcanic activities of Mount Agung.

Although the central government recently realized the breakwater and jetty ramp door, Swastika stated that Tanah Ampo Harbor is still projected to be a cruise ship stopover. In addition to these facilities, Tanah Ampo is projected to be stopover of pioneer ships, yachts and phinisi. In the future, there will be possibility to support Bali-Lombok crossing activities in case the Padangbai Harbor is overloaded. Although Tanah Ampo will be managed by PT. ASDP as the Harbor Business Entity (BUP), Swastika believed the existing activities will give positive values to Karangasem. (kmb)

Mt. Agung spews dark volcanic ashes Besakih Temple untouched AMLAPURA - Mount Agung spewed ash again on Monday night (Jan. 1) at around 22:00 that resulted in ash fall in the area of Selat Village and to the southwest. The material that came out of the volcano was different than in previous eruptions with dark volcanic ash was reported to have spread to Abiansemal, Badung. “It was like flour, but black,” said a 44 year old resident of Gunung Boiau, Muncan Village, Selat named Wayan Kardana, on Tuesday (Jan. 2).

Gunung Biau hamlet is located within the 10 kilometer radius of Mount Agung’s disaster-prone area (KBR). According to Kardana, the ash fall started around 22:30 and lasted until early the next morning. There was also a striking smell of sulfur however both were gone by late morning. “The ashe piled up about had a centimeter”, he explained.

According to information compiled in the field, the volcanic ashe in Karangasem reached the areas of Temukus (upper area of Besakih), Badeg and Yeh Ha hamlets in Sebudi village and Muncan village that are all located wiithin a radius of 8-10 km form the crater of Mount Agung. The volcanic ashes resembling fine sand also reached areas within the safe radius in places like Nongan and Menanga village in the subdistrict of Rendang. The fine volcanic ash also fell at the evacuation post at Rendang Agriculture Unit. Areas east of Selat did not report any volcanic ash fall.

Despite the emission of volcanic ash, people’s activities were not interrupted. In some hamlets of Muncan that are located within the disaster-prone area there are still people who have not evacuated.

Magma-VAR Indonesia reported that the an eruption on Monday night took place for 240 seconds with an amplitude of 25 mm and the thick volcanic ash reached a height of 1,500 meters. The eruption was followed by several emissions of white smoke and volcanic ash that reached the Rendang Monitoring Post. “Yes, the earthquake of an eruption was observed”, said Subdivision Head of Volcano for Eastern Indonesia Region, Devy Kamil Syahbana.

Due to wind, some of the ash reached Badung as well.

Although some areas of Karangasem were hit with wuite thick ash, Besakih Temple located about 6 km from the top of Mt. Agung did not have any ash fall.

A volunteer named Ketut Wijaya Mataram said that Besakih Temple and surrounding areas were not explosed to volcanic ash. Vegetation that had been disrupted by previous

ash fall was looking green again, he said.

At 07:00 on Tuesday morning, said Wijaya he saw no trace of volcanic ash at Besakih Temple. “The ash did not fall at Besakih Temple while Temukus and Sebidu village did have some ash fall. The summit of Mount Agung was clearly visible and in the sunshine I saw a blast from the crater, but by midday it was covered with clouds”, he said.

Wijaya Mataram also said there was little to no activity

around Besakih Temple and both tourists and locals were busy on Monday morning after celebrating New Years.

Local residents did come to pray on the full moon of the seventh month of the Balinese calendar. One or two tourists were seen but appeared to be looking for adventure rather than a casual strol. “They were carrying big backpacks. I suspect they want to climb the mountain”, he concluded. (117)

Rabies infected animals on decline in Tabanan

TABANAN - The success of the mass vaccinations that have been carried out is starting to be seen in Tabanan. In 2015 there were a total of 55 reported cases of dogs and cows infected with rabies while in 2017 this umber was down to 29 cases. In 2017 there were just 5 cases of rabies in infection in RCA (rabies carriers animals) in Tabanan.

Head of the Tabanan Agriculture and Horticulture Agency, I Nyoman Budana, accompanied by Section Head of Animal Health, I Gusti Ngurah Wiksuara, said on Tuesday (Jan. 2) that the five cases of RCA animals in Tabanan that were found

to be infected were located in Anyar hamlet (Kediri), Gerokgak Gede hamlet, Delod Peken (Tabanan), Batungsel village (Pupuan) where the positive RCA was cow and one dog in Bajra village (Selemadeg).

The declining number of rabies infected RCA, said Budana, is due to the yearly rabies vaccinations that are held on a mass scale. Mass rabies vaccinations remain a top priority in 2018 with the expectation that a rabies-free Bali can be achieved by 2020.

A total of 58, 021 RCA were vaccinated in Tabanan in 2017 consisting of 56,791 dogs, 1,207 cats and 23 monkeys. Of Tabanan’s

10 subdistricts, the largest number of RCAs were vaccinated in the sub-district of Kediri (7,813), followed by Tabanan (7,454), Penebel (6,579), Pupuan (6,406), Kerambitan (5,816), West Selemadeg (5,412), Baturiti (5,211), Marga (5,132), Selemadeg (4,570) and East Selemadeg (3,628).

Wiksuara however added that the total dog population of Tabanan is estimated to reach 60,000 while only 56,791 dogs were vaccinated.

“Estimations are only approximate and maybe the total dog population is less that estimated, this cold result in more than 100 percent

vaccination rates. These estimate of course also affect the provision of vaccines from the central government”, explained Wiksuara.

The estimated population of dogs has not been calculated for 2018, but based on last year’s estimate the population could be over 60,000. The mass vaccinations for 2018 will follow the same procedures as last year, he added.

“There are two teams involved, one waits for people to bring their pets in to get vaccinated, while the other actively involved in combing the streets for stray dogs or gods that are not kept on a leash”, said Wiksuara.

There were no dog eliminations last yea as there was no budget for the provision of necessary substances and the same is true this year. Eliminations are done by the provincial government with the assistance of human resources from the district government.

Elimination is done selectively in areas where rabies positive cases of RCA occur. “In 2017, there were some eliminations but they were conducted by the provincial government who had the necessary substances. We help in terms of human resources”, explained Wiksuara. (kmb24)

NBC says Hoda Kotb to replace Lauer as ‘Today’ co-anchor NEW YORK - Television host Hoda Kotb was named the new co-anchor of the NBC News “Today” show on Tuesday, replacing former co-host Matt Lauer several weeks after the longtime anchor was fired for inappropriate sexual behavior, according to a network statement.

Kotb will join Savannah Guthrie during the first two hours of the popular program, starting at 7 a.m.

EST (noon GMT), and become the first pair of women to host the show along with weatherman Al Roker and Orange Room host Carson Daly. Kotb will continue co-hosting the 10 a.m. hour of “Today” with Kathie Lee Gifford.

“It’s 2018 and we are kicking off the year right because Hoda is officially the co-anchor of Today,” said Guthrie, 46, who announced the news during the program’s opening moments.

Kotb, 53, quickly filled in as co-host when Lauer was fired on Nov. 28 after a female colleague complained to NBC officials about a pattern of inappropriate sexual

behavior that began while they were on assignment at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia, according to the network.

At least two other women went to NBC with similar complaints against Lauer following the first allegation. None of the women has been publicly identified.

“Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort,” Lauer said after he was fired.

Reuters has not independently verified the accusations.

Kotb joined NBC News in 1998 as a correspondent and has cohosted the fourth hour of “Today” with Gifford since 2008. She also hosts a program on Sirius XM satellite radio.

“Over the past several weeks, Hoda has seamlessly stepped into the co-anchor role alongside Savannah, and the two have quickly hit the ground running,” NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack said in an email to staff, according to Today. com. (rtr)

Storm Eleanor causes flood damage on Ireland’s west coast

GALWAY - Homes and business on Ireland’s west coast suffered flood damage and 27,000 were still without electricity on Wednesday after Storm Eleanor brought heavy rain and winds of up to 155 kilometres per hour.

The storm hit Ireland’s fourth largest city, Galway, particularly hard as high tides late on Tuesday forced road closures and wreaked havoc for shop owners. Ireland’s Electricity Supply Board (ESB) said at one stage

on Tuesday 150,000 homes and business were without electricity.

“We’re really hopeful, given that it’s the last week of a lot of people’s Christmas holidays, that we will have power back to pretty much ev-

erybody by tonight,” Derek Hynes, Operations Manager for ESB, told national broadcaster RTE. The weather service’s second highest level of alert remained in place for the west and northwest of

the country. Met Eireann said a combination of high tides and exceptionally high seas would result in coastal damage and further flooding.

Three people died in October when Tropical Storm Ophelia battered every corner of Ireland, bringing down trees and power lines and whipping up 10-metre (30-foot) waves.(rtr)

YouTuber Logan Paul says suicide video was ‘huge mistake’

LOS ANGELES - American YouTube star Logan Paul on Tuesday apologized for posting a video of a suicide victim in Japan, saying he had made a “huge mistake” and was ashamed of himself.

Paul, 22, whose almost daily video blogs on YouTube have over 15 million followers, apologized for laughing with friends about the body they filmed hanging on a tree in Japan’s so-called “suicide forest” and posted to the video-sharing channel.

Logan deleted the video on Monday after it caused a social media backlash.

“I’ve made a severe and continuous lapse in my judgment and I don’t expect to be forgiven. I’m simply here to apologize,” Paul said in a YouTube video called

“So Sorry.”

He said the shots of he and his friends laughing nervously after the discovery of the body were “raw and unfiltered” reactions and that the video should never have been posted or even filmed.

“I’ve made a huge mistake. I don’t expect to be forgiven... I’m ashamed of myself. I am disappointed,” he added.

Logan shot the video on a visit to Japan’s Aokigahara forest on the slopes of Mount Fuji, that is known for its high number of suicides. He promoted it on his Twitter account

at the weekend as “the craziest and most real video I’ve ever uploaded.”

Reaction was swift with critics calling the video disgusting and tasteless.

“Paul believes he’s ‘making YouTube history’ by vlogging the body of a young person who died by suicide... You’re not Neil Armstrong bro, it’s simply a thing no one else has been tacky enough to do outside rotten. com circa 2000,” tweeted Caitlin Doughty, a Los Angeles mortician and author of “From Here to Eternity.” (rtr)
