‘Burnt,’ ‘Crisis,’ add to a pileup of flops at box office

NEW YORK — Sandra Bullock’s political satire “Our Brand Is Crisis” and Bradley Cooper’s chef drama “Burnt” added to a pileup of flops at the box office, where new wide releases have gone a startling 0-for-9 in the last two weeks. After five movies failed to draw moviegoers last week, Hollywood whiffed again over the Halloween weekend as four new movies went largely ignored in favor of trickor-treating. The “60 Minutes II” scandal drama “Truth,” with Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, expanding nationwide, and the horror comedy “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” added to a plague of empty theaters. That enabled the top three films from the last several weeks — “The Martian,” ‘’Goosebumps” and “Bridge of Spies” — to remain atop the ranks, according to studio estimates Sunday. With an estimated $11 million in its fifth weekend,

Ridley Scott’s 3-D space adventure “The Martian” has hauled in $180.8 million domestically, and led the box office four times — a dominating stretch that has spelled trouble for other releases courting adult moviegoers. The weekend was never meant to be a big one at theaters with Halloween falling on a Saturday and the latest James Bond film, “Spectre” (and follow-up to the $1.1 billion “Skyfall”) awaiting release in the coming week. Sony’s “Spectre,” which has opened in a few international markets, scored the biggest U.K. debut ever with $63.8 million over the weekend. But the box office numbers in

North America were still especially low, especially for two of Hollywood’s top stars. The Weinstein Co.’s “Burnt,” starring Cooper as a former top chef in Paris, took in $5 million despite playing on more than 3,000 screens. “Our Brand Is Crisis,” David Gordon Green’s true tale of political strategists in Bolivia, managed a scant $3.4 million on 2,202 screens for Warner Bros. Though made for a modest $28 million, the film’s opening marks the worst wide-release debut of a movie headlined by Bullock, even falling below the $4.7 million of “Two if by Sea” in 1996. Sony Pictures Classics “Truth,” which recounts CBS’ reporting on President George W. Bush’s military service, expanded to 1,120 theaters, but couldn’t even crack $1 million. It earned just $901,000. years.” The series, adapted from the teen novels of Suzanne Collins, tells the story of Katniss’ battle to survive in a reality TV-style life-and-death game in a post-apocalyptic future state. In last year’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” she not only battled for her life, but became the symbol of a revolution. In the finale, she tries to lead the rebellion against the totalitarian government of District 13. “I didn’t really feel that I said goodbye to her,” Lawrence noted of Katniss. In the final installment, Katniss must cope with the emotional instability of her lovelorn admirer Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, while still enjoying the support of the other man in her life, best friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth).

WWII bomb discovered at German airport, 7 flights cancelled

BERLIN - A World War II bomb was destroyed in a controlled explosion Monday at the main international airport in the western German city of Duesseldorf, briefly halting air traffic.

Jennifer Lawrence, rare Hollywood action heroine, in ‘Hunger Games’ farewell

LOS ANGELES - Jennifer Lawrence is bidding farewell to “The Hunger Games,” the wildly popular fantasy franchise that made her a megastar and rare Hollywood action heroine. Lawrence is back as bow-and-arrow badass Katniss Everdeen, leading her rebels deeper into the fight against injustice in their dystopian world in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2,” opening around the globe November 18-20. But the movie marks the final chapter in the hugely successful saga that saw Lawrence -- at 25 already an Oscar winner and the world’s highest-paid actress -- catapulted to fame. “I think it will be pretty bizarre when the movie is finally out and... everything is officially done,” Lawrence told reporters in Los Angeles Saturday during a press preview. “This movie has been my life for so many

Flights at the hub, Germany’s third busiest in terms of passengers, were interrupted for an hour in the morning while the 125-kilogramme (275-pound) bomb was neutralised, the airport said in a statement. Two departing flights and five

arrivals were axed from the schedule and 34 other flights had to be brought forward or delayed on safety grounds, an airport spokesman said. The bomb had been discovered overnight near the main runway

during construction work. Before it was exploded, the bomb was placed in an eight-metre (26-foot) deep hole to limit any collateral damage. “The bang of the detonation could be clearly heard near the airport,” the city said in a statement. Authorities fear other bombs might still be hidden beneath the earth at Duesseldorf airport and

further digs are planned this month to comb the grounds for WWII-era explosives. In 2009, a 500-kilo bomb was unearthed near the site and destroyed. Seventy years after the end of fighting, parts of Germany remain riddled with unexploded bombs from the Allied campaigns, and construction workers regularly uncover them, often leading to mass

evacuations. (afp)

Handling abrasion, Bali needs a marine spatial planning

Lawrence said it took her a while to adapt to her new life in the spotlight amid the massive “Hunger Games” success -- and the pressure that accompanied it. “There were a few years of getting used to it, your entire world changes,” she said. Fans the world over have embraced the “Hunger Games” since the first film came out in 2012, with the franchise passing the billion dollar mark at the box office. “I have a new normal now, I feel very stable and normal and happy,” Lawrence said. “But the pressure... you just can’t think about it.” The blockbusters have gone down in history for having a female heroine leading the fight. But “it’s probably too soon to be able to look back and reflect” on the impact the films have had on the public, Lawrence said. (afp)

Tourists strolled in Canggu Beach, Badung Regency. Abrasion issues seem to hit the beaches in Bali endlessly. The number of beaches getting eroded even tends to increase.

ABRASION is affected more and more of Bali’s beaches and more and more related issues are emerging. Clearly the government is still impotent in dealing the problem of abrasion given that it is worsening because of human activity rather than because of natural factors. “Ideally the impact of abrasion should be minimized by a marine spacial plan for Bali which has became mandated by law. A marine spatial planning could set limits on the activities that can and cannot be take place on the coast, including the determination of conservation areas and other areas in the context of marine spatial planning,” said Manager of the Conservation International for Bali Region, I Made Iwan Dewantama. Dewantama asserted that it is extremely urgent that Bali immediately create a marine spatial plan that includes issues related to licenses for coastal area utilization. Due to the absence of a marine spatial plan, licensing for boat traffic and marine tourism is negatively impacting on coastal abrasion. “By all means, when we talk specifically about abrasion in Bali, we can say that it is mostly due to the reclamation on Serangan Island. Obviously the impact has been strongly felt. Reclamation activities and he creation of pierss and coastal breakwater needs to be clearly delineated in a marine spatial plan,” he added. The drafting of a marine spatial plan certainly needs to be based on an academic study, so that the experts determine how revetments or breakwaters should be made so as to avoid causing more severe abrasion elsewhere. Similarly, construction activities in coastal areas and depositions into estuaries also need to be included in such a government plan. “Precipitation in estuaries also has an impact on the ecosystem. So far, we are not seeing very good management of water. Everywhere from watersheds to estuaries are filled with human waste and garbage and we are seeing lots of sedimentation. Obviously this affects the flow of water and causes sand and sediment on the beaches to shift resulting in abrasion,” he said. Continue to page 2 Sensitive ...
