Warner Bros. and New Line’s “It” appears to be back on top with $17.3 million from 3,917 locations. But Universal’s “American Made” and Fox’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” are trailing just behind with $17 million each. Since the numbers are so close, some studios are waiting until later in the day to make the official call. Meaning this one likely won’t be settled until Monday morning. What’s certain is that Sony’s remake of “Flatliners” is coming in below expectations. After getting killed by critics (0% on Rotten Tomatoes) the horror flick is opening to $6.7 million from
2,552 locations. “American Made” stars Tom Cruise as a commercial airline pilot who’s recruited by the CIA to fly reconnaissance missions over South America. A $17 million opening is modest for movie starring Cruise, but the studio is hoping for a long runway based on positive reviews and word of mouth. The movie has been earning money overseas for the past few weekends, giving it $64.7 million in international grosses so far. 55% of the domestic audience is male, and 56% is over the age of 30. “There were people out there
who had us at a little less. It’s not a disappointment -- it’s an overachievement,” said Universal’s distribution chief Nick Carpou, who also addressed opening the film against so many others with R MPAA ratings. “I think that the rating of the film is secondary to the content of the film,” he said. “To me, it feels like a fall release.” If “It” returns to the top spot after taking second place to “Kingsman” last weekend, it would be a feat. The horror movie smashed records for the month of September when it opened, and went on to become the highest grossing horror movie of all time. In 2000, “The Simpsons” joked in an episode titled “Bart to the Future” that Trump would enter the White House and said his presidency would ruin the economy. PVMBG urges residents not to climb Mt. Agung
AMLAPURA - Chief of Volcanology Center for Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Kasbani, responded to the strong desire that some people still have to climb to the top of Mount Agung, despite the level IV warning status. He said that for safety reasons, he is asking that no more residents climb the highest mountain in Bali. When interviewed at the Mount Agung Monitoring Post at Rendang village, Karangasem, on Sunday (Oct. 1), Kasbani revealed that they had received information about some people that had climbed to the top of the mountain to verify conditions in the crater. “What they did is very dangerous”, said Kusbani who again asked that nobody try to do the same as of far Mount Agung remains in critical likelihood or erupting. “What they did is very dangerous, the mountain could in fact erupt at any time, so we are urging everyone to remain safe and not take the risk of climbing Mount Agung”, said Kusbani. The smoke that is currently being emitted from the crater indicates that there are vapour blasts and this smoke contains toxic gases that are highly dangerous if inhaled. The recent climb was especially hazardous because it was cloudy so the gases would surely have settled in the bottom of the crater. “Although it has not erupted, it remains dangerous because the smoke released through fractures is very dangerous. In addition to emitting water vapour in the crater, it also blows gases to the surface. This should be understood and taken into consideration”, said Kasbani. Seismicity also remains high. Although some types of earthquakes have decreased, the deep and shallow volcanic earthquakes and tectonic earthquake are still quite frequent. (kmb41)

Ngurah Wirawan said that currently there needs to be clear information for tourists letting them know that tourism the Island of Bali remains safe. “Tourism activities like the Bali Run show the world that many tourism activities including sports tourism are running normally” he said. The Bali Run, explained Wirawan has participants from all over Indonesia and other parts of the world and takes place both in Nusa Dua and also on the Bali Mandara Toll Road. “Last year, we only ran within the area of Nusa Dua, but this year with permission from the Minister of Public Works we are allowed to use the Bali Mandara Toll Road as part of the running route”, he said. Running is not just a ‘sports tourism’ activity but is also popular with people from many age groups living in urban areas around the world. The presence of foreign tourists in the Bali Run proves that tourists consider Bali to still be a safe place to be. “ This activity is one of the tourist attractions in the area of ITDC”, he added. Wirawan admitted that although the increasing seismic activity of Mount Agung has been spread through social and mass media, the run event organizers managed to convince both domestic and foreign runners that Mount Agung is far enough from the area where the run is taking place that conditions remain safe. Visitors were encouraged to return to Bali to participate in the Bali Run”, he said. When asked about tourists having cancelled their reservations, Wirawan said that he had not received any reports from hotels in the ITDC area about cancelations related to Mount Agung. Currently, hotel occupancy rates in the ITDC area remains quite good. IN the first semester of semester of 2017 the average occupancy was above 78 percent. However, he has not confirmed the hotel occupancy in the ITDC area since the the rumblings of Mount Agung started. (kmb23)

Abandoned by tourists, Bali town counts cost of Indonesia volcano
AMED - A Balinese town once bustling with holidaymakers has almost emptied of tourists after warnings that nearby Mount Agung could erupt at any time - a snapshot of the growing cost the rumbling volcano poses to Indonesia’s economy. Business has slumped at many hotels, dive resorts and restaurants in towns around the volcano since authorities issue the highest alert level for Mount Agung last month. An owner of a dive centre in Amed, around 15 km (9 miles) from the volcano and just outside the official “danger zone”, said many of her guests had cancelled. “If (the situation) lasts for nine months or more...then we have no choice but to close down because we will have no money left to operate and pay the staff,” said Helene Rabate, a Spaniard who runs the centre. Cafes and restaurants were largely empty and few visitors were seen at the usually crowded dive centres of this seaside town. The last time Agung erupted was in 1963, when more than 1,000 people were killed. Since then, tourism has transformed towns like Amed from sleepy fishing and agricultural villages. Restaurant owner Wayan Widarti has seen a dramatic drop in customers. “It could be worse than when
the Bali bombing happened because there’s uncertainty on when (the eruption) is going to happen and how long we wait,” she said, referring to the 2002 nightclub bombing that killed 202 people and prompted a slump in visitors to the holiday island. Bali, famous for its surf, beaches and temples, attracted nearly 5 million visitors last year - more than half the total number of foreign tourists to Indonesia. Tourism, a cornerstone of Bali’s economy, is Indonesia’s fourth-biggest earner of foreign currency after natural resources like coal and palm oil. Indonesian policy makers have been seeking to boost an economy whose growth rate has been stuck at around 5 percent for the last few years, so any protracted damage to tourism will be particularly unwelcome. Indonesian officials have said

Disaster management authorities have imposed an exclusion zone of up to 12 km, prompting more than 140,000 residents to flee to neighbouring villages. “For people who live in safe zones, there is no reason to evacuate,” Bali governor I Made Mangku Pastika said, adding that makeshift evacuation centres were straining under the weight of thousands of extra evacuees. NIAMEY - Fatima Alher watches her step, careful not to sink knee-deep in the water flooding the rice fields of Kirkisoy, a neighbourhood in Niger’s capital. Her colleagues help lift her over the biggest puddles – a task complicated by the fact that they barely take their eyes off their smartphones. “Never without a phone, that’s our motto,” Alher says, frantically typing on her screen. In one of the world’s poorest countries, widespread flooding has killed at least 56 people and destroyed thousands of homes since the rainy season began in June, according to the interior ministry. Efforts to rebuild flood-hit areas are not progressing fast enough, residents coplain. But since July, a team of 20 “investigators” from OpenStreetMap Niger – a community of students and young professionals who are developing a digital map of the country – have been plotting flood-prone areas on their smartphones in two of Niamey’s districts. “Flooding devastates the country every year, and yet no effort has been made to chart the most vulnerable areas,” Alher, a geography student and leader of the group, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Using GeoODK, an app that allows users to collect georeferenced information, the researchers gather details such as the number of residents and buildings, any construction materials used and the location of electric poles. “By the end of August we had drawn up a list of over 15,000 properties and buildings,” Alher proudly explained. “We then send the data to the interior ministry, so it can better target its relief efforts in times of flooding.” The three-month initiative is managed by the government Disaster Risk Management and Urban Development Project, and funded by the World Bank. Chronobiology, or the study of biological clocks, is now a growing field of research thanks to the pioneering work of the three scientists, who explained the role of specific genes in keeping animal bodies in step with light and darkness. Today scientists are exploring novel approaches to new treatments based on such circadian cycles, including establishing the best times to take medicines, and there is an increased focus on the importance of healthy sleeping patterns. “This ability to prepare for the regular daily fluctuations is crucial for all life forms,” Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Karolinska Institute Nobel Committee, told reporters. “This year’s Nobel prize laureates have been studying this
fundamental problem and solved the mystery of how an inner clock in our bodies can anticipate daily fluctuations between night and day to optimise our behaviour and physiology.” Rosbash said the news that the trio had won the Nobel prize, which is worth 9 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million), was “a little overwhelming”. “It took my breath away, literally. I was woken up out of deep sleep and it was shocking,” he told Reuters. “It’s great for basic science. It hasn’t had a tremendous amount of practical impact yet, so it’s really a very basic discovery ... It’s good to have the attention on this kind of basic work.” Scientists were already pondering the concept of body clock genes in the 1960s and 1970s. Then in the mid-1980s the three laureates used fruit flies to isolate a gene that controls the normal daily biological rhythm and showed how it encodes a protein that accumulates in the cell during the night and degrades during the day.
Further research revealed the role of other genes in the complex system. Now doctors are paying increased attention to the implications of this daily cycle in people who have erratic sleeping and working patterns or in children who stay up late. “We are learning more and more what impact it has to not follow your clock,” Nobel committee member Christer Hoog told Reuters. “If you constantly disobey your clock, what will happen? Medical research is going on with regards to that.” Medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes awarded each year. The prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were created in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel and have been awarded since 1901. Nobel medicine laureates have included scientific greats such as Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, and Karl Landsteiner, whose identification of separate blood types opened the way to carrying out safe transfusions. He asked that no more residents will climb to the top of the highest mountain in Bali for safety reasons. BANGLI — Two refugees of Mount Agung died at Bangli Hospital. Both refugees are Wayan Sadra, 57, from Keladian hamlet, Pempatan, Rendang and Gusti Ayu Made Dudun, 78, from Palak hamlet, Besakih, who died due to suffering from chronic lung disease. Deputy Director of Bangli Hospital, Ketut Darmaja, when met on Sunday (Sep. 1) explained that Wayan Sadra registered to evacuate at the refugee camp of Pande hamlet, Cempaga Bangli, went to emergency room of Bangli House on Thursday (Sep. 28) around 19:25. He came into the emergency room with respiratory problems.
After receiving medical treatment in the emergency room, the patient was then treated in the ICU. On the second day, Saturday (Sep. 30), Sadra’s consciousness decreased to finally die. “Around 4:30, the patient died,” he explained. After being entrusted in the mortuary of Bangli Hospital, Sadra’s body was then repatriated by using hears of Bangli Hospital to his home village at Keladian hamlet, Pempatan, Karangasem, on Sunday (Oct. 10) around 10:10. In the meantime, the patient Gusti Ayu Made Dudun, 78, from Palak hamlet, Besakih, went to the emergency room of Bangli Hos-
pital on Thursday afternoon (Sep. 28). Darmaja said that like Wayan Sadra, Gusti Ayu Made Dudun registered to evacuate at Nongan Karangasem and came into emergency room because of acute shortness of breath. She got handling in the emergency room. A few hours later the patient died. The body of Gusti Ayu Made Dudun was sent home by ambulance on Friday (Sep. 29). School overwhelmed by refugee students
SINGARAJA - Schools in Tejakula sub-district are becoming overwhelmed to accommodate students of Gunung Agung refugees. This condition can not be avoided, because the number of students with the availability of space and school bench is not comparable. As a result, the school was forced to do double shift (morning and afternoon school). In addition, teachers also begin to overwhelm in teaching, as the number of students increases. Monitoring in the field, Monday (Oct.2), mentioned there are 1,552 elementary school students are accommodated in Tembok village. These children are accom-
modated in all primary schools in Tembok Village and surrounding areas. Schools receiving these children are overwhelmed by inadequate school capacity with the addition of refugee students. One of the schools that was overwhelmed by the displaced students was SDN 2 Tembok, Tejakula Sub-district. A week ago this school received additional refugee students as many as 170 people. The additional hundreds of displaced students made the classroom in this school unable to accommodate them. The head of SDN 2 Tembok Made Suarna said that since the refugee camp was
accommodated in his school, he enacted a double shift learning process. For the morning shift, his side prioritizes learning for students from the Tembok Village as many as 165 people. As for the afternoon shift turn refugees who follow the learning. With the afternoon shift in terms of the bench is sufficient, but the teacher is limited in number. ‘’ Because of the arrival of the refugee students we are overwhelmed and now we are testing with double shifts. Two women deny murdering North Korean leader’s half-brother
DHAKA - Bangladesh and Myanmar agreed on Monday to set up a “working group” to plan the repatriation of more than half a million Rohingya Muslim refugees who have fled to Bangladesh to escape an army crackdown, the Bangladeshi foreign minister said. The United Nations has called the exodus of 507,000 Rohingya since late August the world’s fastest-developing refugee emergency, and says Buddhist-majority Myanmar is engaging in ethnic cleansing against its Rohingya Muslim minority. Myanmar denies that. It says its forces are battling Rohingya “terrorists” who triggered the latest wave of violence with coordinated attacks on the security forces on Aug. 25. Myanmar says more than 500 people have been killed since, most of them insurgents, whom it has accused of attacking civilians and setting most of the fires that have reduced to ashes more than half of more than 400 Rohingya villages in the north of Rakhine State. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali said he and Myanmar official Kyaw Tint Swe had agreed in their talks to set up the working group to draw up
plans for repatriation. “We are looking forward to a peaceful solution to the crisis,” Ali told reporters. Kyaw Tint Swe did not speak to the media and government spokesmen in Myanmar were not immediately available for comment. Waves of Rohingya have taken refuge in Bangladesh over the years complaining of persecution, in particular in the late 1970s, the early 1990s and in October last year, following smaller insurgent attacks on the security forces. The neighbours have agreed on repatriation plans before, but the fundamental problem - the status of Rohingya in Myanmar - remains unsettled. The Rohingya are denied citizenship and classified as illegal immigrants, despite claiming roots in Myanmar that go back centuries, with communities marginalised and subjected to bouts of communal violence over the years. Problems of statelessness had to be tackled, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told a meeting in Geneva. “Nowhere is the link between statelessness and displacement more evident than with the Rohingya community,” he said. (rtr)
KUALA LUMPUR - Two women accused of murdering the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with a banned nerve agent pleaded not guilty at the start of a high-profile murder trial in a Malaysian court on Monday. Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, a Vietnamese, are charged with killing Kim Jong Nam by smearing his face with VX, a chemical poison banned by the United Nations, at Kuala Lumpur airport on Feb. 13. Both women wore bullet-proof vests as they were led into the court on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital. They face the death penalty if convicted. Police have also named four North Koreans as suspects in the case and an Interpol red notice, an international alert just short of an arrest warrant, has been issued for the North Koreans, who remain at large. Defence lawyers demanded that the prosecution immediately name the four other suspects, who have also been charged, so they can prepare their case. “The charge must be clear,” said Siti Aisyah’s lawyer, Gooi Soon Seng. Judge Azmi Ariffin dismissed their request. The two women nodded their
heads when the charges were read out by two interpreters. They pleaded not guilty. “ATTACKED FROM BEHIND” The prosecution said the women’s actions showed “intent to kill the victim” by smearing his face and eyes with VX nerve agent, which a Malaysian post-mortem confirmed had killed Kim. The women told their lawyers they did not know they were participating in a deadly attack and believed they were carrying out a prank for a reality TV show. “The prank practice carried out by the first and second accused with the supervision of the four who are still at large was preparation to see through their common intention to kill the victim,” lead prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad said in his opening statement. The two women sat quietly in the packed courtroom. Siti was dressed in a black floral suit, while Huong wore a white long-sleeved t-shirt and jeans. Juliana Idris, who works at the
airport, told the court a man later identified as Kim Jong Nam approached her and asked her to take him to a police station. She said the man, who spoke English, told her he had been “attacked by a woman from behind ... another one closed his eyes”. “His hands were shaking a bit, I don’t know why,” she said. Police Lance Corporal Mohd Zulkarnain Sanudin, who was on duty at the airport, said Juliana had brought Kim Jong Nam to him. He said Kim told him a substance had been wiped on his face. Kim’s eyes were red and he could see some liquid on his face, Zulkarnain said. He also said the he had wrongly recorded Kim Jong Nam’s nationality as South Korean. “The police report I made showed the nationality as South Korean, while on the passport, it was written DPR Korea, whereby I did not know what DPR meant. Dollar surge sends emerging currencies reeling
LONDON - Emerging market currencies slipped on Monday, extending losses from last week as a strong dollar and rising U.S. Treasury yields outweighed upbeat factory data from China. Emerging markets are one of the top-performing asset classes of 2017, with double-digit gains in some sectors, but they have fallen back in recent weeks as the dollar has risen on expectations of a U.S. rate rise by the end of the year and the possible appointment of a more hawkish U.S. Federal Reserve chief. South Africa’s rand, Russia’s rouble and Turkey’s lira all fell around 0.5 percent against the dollar as the dollar index rose further after enjoying its best week of 2017 last week, and yields on 10-year U.S. Treasuries hit their highest since July. Emerging currencies hit five-week lows last week on JPMorgan’s ELMI Plus index, losing more than 1 percent. “You’re seeing some repricing on the U.S. side on a combination of the possibility of tax reform in the U.S. being approved and maybe a more hawkish Fed governor,” said Jakob Christensen, an emerging markets analyst at Danske Bank. “That is playing into a stronger dollar, and goes hand in hand with higher U.S. rates, which is typically tricky for emerging markets,” he said. Investors were cheered by data showing manufacturing activity in China grew at the fastest pace since 2012 in September since that data paints a rosy picture for demand for emerging market exports. But with markets in China, South Korea and India closed for public holidays, MSCI’s benchmark emerging equity index was little changed, and trading some 3 percent below three-year highs struck in September. There were gains, however, on emerging European equities, with Warsaw and Budapest rising 0.7 and 0.9 percent respectively , after robust purchasing manager (PMI) surveys. “On the equity side we have seen a significant rally and maybe the prices are beginning to be a bit stretched, but the strong PMIs suggest the global economy is doing quite well and supporting the trade-oriented emerging markets,” Danske Bank’s Christensen said. On bond markets, Abu Dhabi was the latest country to test markets with plans for a tripletranche U.S. dollar-denominated bond issue. Demand remains strong for emerging market paper, with the spread of sovereign debt over U.S. Treasuries near its lowest since August 2014. Average yields on emerging currency debt nudged back below 6 percent after rising last week . JPMorgan analysts said that while headwinds for emerging debt had increased, they remained overweight. “Given the repricing that has already been seen in market expectations for U.S. rates and emerging currency valuations that are attractive, we are inclined to think the worst of this move is behind us,” they told clients.(rtr)

Capitalism is the only way, UK finance minister says in challenge to Labour
MANCHESTER - British finance minister Philip Hammond defended capitalism as the only route to prosperity on Monday in an attempt to counter the opposition Labour Party’s increasingly popular vision for a more centrally-controlled economy. Hammond is due to speak at the annual conference of his Conservative Party, seen as a chance for Prime Minister Theresa May’s government to try to repair relations with the party’s grassroots after a botched election in June. Divided over Brexit and losing public support to a resurgent Labour led by socialist Jeremy Corbyn, May is leading a fragile minority government. Ahead of his speech to party activists, Hammond, finance minister for the centre-right party since July 2016, talked up the merits of a free-market economy. “It isn’t a coincidence that every country in the world, apart from North Korea, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and Cuba have adopted the market economy system that we operate here,” Hammond told ITV. “It’s happened because it is almost universally recognised that this is the way to advance nations, to get people’s living standards up, to create jobs and sustainable progress, to support public services.” That view has been challenged by Labour, who last week at their own party conference fleshed out plans for a widescale nationalisation of Britain’s infrastructure, higher government spending, and more taxation and control over the banking sector. Hammond’s words echo those of May, who last week issued her own defence of capitalism - a sign of growing concern about the threat Labour poses to the pro-
business orthodoxy that has underpinned British economic policy since Margaret Thatcher’s reforms in the 1980s. “As this model comes under renewed assault, we must not be afraid to defend it,” he will say. “Our economy is not broken: it is fundamentally strong.” UNDERMINING CONFIDENCE Seven years of spending cuts by the Conservatives have tested the patience of the British public and failed to erase a deficit or bring down high levels of national debt. Despite casting the Labour Party as Venezuelan Marxists, PM May’s government has sought to win over voters with moves to address concerns over high levels of student debt and limits on pay for public sector workers. But with Brexit on the horizon, a slowing economy and the Bank of England hinting that interest rates could rise, May’s government has little room for fiscal manoeuvre. “My job is to protect the economy. No one wants to see the economy disrupted by the process we’re going through,” Hammond told Sky News. “Let’s remove this cloud of uncertainty from over our economy.” The British Chambers of Commerce
has warned that public rifts within May’s cabinet are undermining business confidence. Divisions over Europe helped sink the Conservative premierships of Margaret Thatcher, John Major and David Cameron. “Public disagreements between cabinet ministers in recent weeks have only served to undermine business confidence, not just on Brexit negotiations, but also on the many issues where firms need to see clear action from government closer to home,” British Chambers of Commerce Director General Adam Marshall said. Last month rating agency Moody’s downgraded Britain’s credit rating, saying the government’s plans to bring down its debt load had been knocked off course and Brexit would weigh on the economy. The Conservatives will pledge 400 million pounds ($535 million) of additional road and rail spending, but Labour said the plans did not go far enough. “Hammond just wants to continue with the seven years of Tory economic failure that has seen the level of investment in our country fall behind many of our international competitors,” Labour’s finance policy chief John McDonnell said.(rtr)

Hundreds of Daup villagers eat together at Bale Agung Temple
Hundreds of villagers from Daup Customary Villagers, Kintamani, thronged the outermost courtyard of the Bale Agung Temple on Wednesday afternoon (Jun. 28) at around 14:00 to eat together. This shared meal is part of the traditional ngaturang lakon procession that was carried out by ten former leaders of Daup customary village. Jero Penyarikan Payu accompanied by headman of Daup, Dewa Nyoman Saliawan, when met last Wednesday explained that ngaturang lakon is a tradition that must be executed by former customary leaders of Daup customary village in the position of Jero Kubayan, Jero Bau, Jero Singgukan, Jero Nyarikan and Jero Mangku (temple priest). On Wednesday there were a total of ten residents who took part in the ngaturang lako, seven of whom had served as Jero Kubayan, two as Jero Bau and one as Jero Mangku. “This ngaturang lakon signifies a kind of returning of the offerings that were accepted when they were serving as leaders” explained
Saliawan. According to the customs of the ngaturang lakon, residents who once served as kubayan (the highest position in the ulu apad system), are obliged to offer certain oblations including two pigs. Those who served as Jero Bau and temple priests (Jero Mangku) only offer a pig. “This year a total of 17 pigs are being offered”, he said. Jero Penyarikan Payu explained that the ngaturang laku begins with the negtegang procession, followed by nanceb taring and ngingsah. The procession was commenced three days ago and on Wednesday, the mapiuning (notifying) procession took place at the Puseh Temple in the morning when the pigs were brought to the temple. Later in the afternoon, after
performing the mapiuning, the participants went back to the Bale Agung to slaughter the pigs and prepared for various purposes. “Some of the pork is processed for offerings, some divided up for malang (divided equally amongst all the heads of family) and the remaining is made dishes like lawar, sate to be eaten together” Payu explained. Jero Penyarikan Payu went on to explained that the ngaturang lakon tradition is not actually a necessity, however, if it is not implemented the former leaders are considered to have a spiritual debt. “Usually people give up their position as customary leaders (pedulan) once all their children have gotten married” he added. There are always unique and interesting things in Bali. Gumang Temple at Bugbug, Karangasem, for instance, will hold a ritual to be thronged by thousands of Hindu pilgrims from all over Bali. Among the thousands of the pilgrims, the majority will climb to the hill top to the Gumang Temple with offerings including roasted suckling pig. Apparently, every birth of resident, especially at Bugbug customary village, it must include a roasted suckling pig. This offering should not be performed as soon as the baby was born, but can also be done after it grows adult. To get to the Gumang Temple is indeed not easy. Pilgrims have to walk about three kilometers with uphill terrain. Moreover, the pilgrims do not only bring themselves, but must also bring the offerings and roasted suckling pig. This unique spectacle can be seen on Thursday (Oct. 13) after the sanctified effigy of Ida Bhatara of Bebandem, Ngis, Jasri and Bugbug customary village is enthroned at Gumang Temple. According to chief of Bugbug customary village, Jero Wayan Mas Suyasa, the offering of roasted suckling pig implies a sincere offering of local residents to the deity. “The offering of roasted suckling pig serves as an expression of devotion. Other than presenting this offering of every birth, many pilgrims also present roasted suckling pig to pay a vow after getting success in economy or recovery of diseases,” he said. Such offerings of roasted suckling pig can reach thousands of pieces. These offerings are not only from residents of Bugbug, but also from other villages in Bali. It is also done by diaspora of Bugbug mostly living in Buleleng. Besides,
there are also from residents of Bugbug married outside the village. Psychically, they still remember to devoted deities at their home birthplace. “The offering of roasted suckling pig on every birth must not necessarily be paid as soon as after the newborn. In order not to become a burden, this offering can be paid any time when the people are ready. Moreover, it can be done after the child grows adult,” said Mas Suyasa, recently. This tradition has lasted for generations. Every implementation of the usaba gumang is believed by all residents of Bugbug as the opportunity to gain blessing of salvation and wellbeing for the descendants. Bugbug residents have confidence in the safety of their children after presenting this offering. If they have son, their roasted suckling pig are hogs, while if they have daughter their offerings will be of sows. This tradition does not only involve the residents of Bugbug. However, it is also believed by residents of Bugbug getting married outside the village where they should practice the tradition until now. In the procession of usaba gumang taking place from around 13:00, thousands of residents that will be presenting the offerings have thronged the road access to Gumang Temple while carrying roasted suckling pig, rice cone and other offerings. This usaba gumang is always welcomed vivaciously by the residents of Bugbug as the most densely populated village in Karangasem with about 3,000 families and other villages. It is inseparable from the quite high awareness of paying devotional services and holy sacrifices of the local community because it has been instilled early by their elders. (kmb)

BEIRUT - Two suicide bombers attacked a police station in Damascus on Monday, killing a number of civilians and policemen, the interior minister said, in the first such attack in the Syrian capital since July. Four militants carried out the attack, killing more than 10 people, the pro-Damascus TV channel al-Mayadeen said. Russia’s RIA news agency reported that 15 people were killed. Militants targeted the station in the al-Midan neighbourhood and clashed with police officers there, Interior Minister Mohammad al-Shaar said in comments broadcast by state television from the police station. One attacker blew himself up at the main entrance and another detonated his explosive device on the first floor, he said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Footage broadcast by state TV showed bodies wrapped in shrouds at the scene and fire fighters putting out flames. Spanish PM faces crisis after violent secession vote in Catalonia
SANT PERE DE TORELLO - Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy faces Spain’s biggest constitutional crisis in decades after Sunday’s violence-marred independence referendum in Catalonia opened the door for its wealthiest region to move for secession as early as this week.
The streets of Barcelona, the Catalan capital, were quiet on Monday, but newspaper editorials said the referendum, in which Catalan officials said 90 percent of voters had chosen to leave Spain, had set the stage for a decisive clash between Madrid and the region. “It could all get worse,” the moderate Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia said in an editorial after Spanish police used batons and rubber bullets to disrupt the vote, which had been declared illegal by Madrid. Catalan officials said 840 people had been injured. “We’re entering a phase of strikes and street protests ... and with more movement, more repression.” Catalonia is a centre of industry and tourism accounting for a fifth of Spain’s economy, a production base for major multi-nationals from Volkswagen to Nestle, and home to Europe’s fastest-growing sea port. Although it already has extensive autonomy, its tax revenues are crucial to Spain’s state budget. Catalonia’s regional leader, Carles Puigdemont, declared on Sunday that
voters had earned the right to independence and said he would present the results to the region’s parliament, which then had the power to move a motion of independence. The referendum has no legal status; it has been blocked by the Madrid government and Constitutional Court for being at odds with the 1978 constitution, which states that Spain cannot be broken up, and there is little sign of support for Catalan independence in any other part of Spain. Puigdemont called an emergency meeting of the Catalan regional government. In Madrid, Rajoy planned to coordinate next steps in a meeting with Pedro Sanchez, leader of the opposition Socialists. CHALLENGE TO MADRID Puigdemont’s comments threw down a challenge to Rajoy, who has the constitutional power to sack the regional government and put Catalonia under central control pending fresh elections. That would raise tensions further in the region of 7.5 million people, a former principality with its own
language and culture, and potentially hurt the resurgent Spanish economy. The euro lost a third of a U.S. cent after the vote, though it later recovered ground. By 0800 GMT, Spain’s IBEX stock index was down 0.6 percent, easing back from steeper losses at the opening; the main losers included the Catalan banks Sabadell and Caixabank. Yields on Spain’s 10-year benchmark rose initially but also fell back through the morning. Major investment banks expect the crisis eventually to be resolved with an offer from Rajoy of more autonomy. “We believe the risk of larger confrontations in the near-term is rising, involving at the extreme wide disruptions with potential severe economic costs,” Citibank said in a note on Monday, It did not, though, see this as the most likely outcome. Catalan trade unions have called a general strike for Tuesday. Enter “AyoPoligami” - a new smartphone app developed by Pranayama, which aims to “bring together male users with women who are willing to make ‘big families’.” Loosely translated as “Let’s do polygamy”, the Tinder-style dating app has already stirred up controversy since its April launch in Indonesia, where over 80 percent of the 250 million population are Muslim and polygamy is legal. Muslim men can take up to four wives in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, if permission is granted by a court and the first wife gives her consent. Court officials could not provide figures of how many people in Indonesia are polygamous, but activists say cases of men giving false information to gain permission and manipulation of women are common.
The app has been downloaded over 10,000 times before it stopped registering new members following concerns of fake accounts were being set up, and men using the site without the knowledge of their first wives. The 37-year-old dodged questions about whether he was using the app to look for another wife but said he continues to learn about polygamy, after he took on his second wife six years following his first marriage in 2000. “It just happened, this is what God planned for me,” said Fasyiya, who takes turns to see his two wives and five children who live in nearby villages. The majority of the app users were men, but there were also about 4,000 women who have registered, the app developer said. Lawyer Rachmat Dwi Putranto, who deals with marriage matters, said polygamy is “not that easily achieved” as Indonesian courts will only give permission if the first wife is disabled, ill or cannot bear children. Taman Ayun Temple, Central Badung
MANGUPURA - Pura Taman Ayun, located 18 km West of Denpasar in the village of Mengwi, is a beautiful temple surrounded by a moat that is closely associated with the begnning of the Mengwi kingdom. The kingdom of Mengwi was founded in 1627 and the first king or raja of Mengwi I Gusti Agung Ngurah Made Agung, -who later become known as Ida Cokorda Sakti Belambangan, had the temple built in 1631. Pura Taman Ayun was thus the royal family’s temple and it is here that they would worship their ancestors at a special shrine known as “Gedong Paibon”. Following the pattern of most Balinese temples, Pura Taman Ayun has three connecting temple yards. The innermost sanctum knows as “Utama Mandala” or ‘highest circle’, a middle yard “Madia Mandala” or ‘circle in between’ and an outer yard “Nista Mandala” or ‘humblest circle’. As one enters the main sanctum, on epasses though a raised gateway called a koriaAgung (Paduraksa), and in between the outer and middle courtyards there is a split gate called, a”Candi Bentar”. IN the middle courtyard there are shrines dedicated to the main tem-
ples of Bali. These shrines were built order to ensure that the kingdom and the people of Mengwi would be able to share in the prosperity and fertility of the island and also served as a place for the people of Mengwi to carry out religious ceremonies such as meajar-ajar, memendak sang Pitara. People would also come here to request holy water to protect their rice fields form pestilence and other calamities. The inner courtyard also houses a shrine dedicated to one of the Kings famous troops knwn as “Pasek Badak’. The extensive temple grounds of Taman Ayun also served a place for the riyal family to relax. The temple grounds cover some 4 hectares and the moat that surrounds the area used to be filled with different colored lilies and loins. Around the edge of the moat stand flower bearing trees such as: frangipani, cempaka, kenanga, as well as mangostein, durian, manggo , rambutan and other fruit trees. The temple has always been impacted by the ups and downs of the Mengwi kingdom. In 1890 for example, when under Mengwi’s 10th raja I Gusti Made Agung, a war was lost to the raja of Badung, the temple was completely neglected

Organisers said a total of 110,604 spectators went to Sepang International Circuit near Kuala Lumpur’s international airport over the three days of practice, qualifying and Sunday’s race. Villas-Boas banned for eight games in China HONG KONG - Andre Villas-Boas has been handed an eight-match ban by the Chinese Football Association, ruling the Shanghai SIPG coach out of making an appearance on the touchline for the remainder of the Chinese Super League season. The Portuguese coach was handed the suspension and ordered to pay a fine of 40,000 yuan ($6,012) following his sending off during SIPG’s 1-0 win over Beijing Guoan on Sept. 22. The league season has four games remaining and ends in November. “When the match reached the 78th minute the official from Shanghai SIPG club, Andre VillasBoas, insulted the referee with gestures which have a negative influence,” the CFA said in a statement. “Chinese football is developing based on the principals of fair

Villas-Boas banned for eight games in China HONG KONG - Andre Villas-Boas has been handed an eight-match ban by the Chinese Football Association, ruling the Shanghai SIPG coach out of making an appearance on the touchline for the remainder of the Chinese Super League season. The Portuguese coach was handed the suspension and ordered to pay a fine of 40,000 yuan ($6,012) following his sending off during SIPG’s 1-0 win over Beijing Guoan on Sept. 22. Taman Ayun Temple, Central Badung
MANGUPURA - Pura Taman Ayun, located 18 km West of Denpasar in the village of Mengwi, is a beautiful temple surrounded by a moat that is closely associated with the begnning of the Mengwi kingdom. The kingdom of Mengwi was founded in 1627 and the first king or raja of Mengwi I Gusti Agung Ngurah Made Agung, -who later become known as Ida Cokorda Sakti Belambangan, had the temple built in 1631. Pura Taman Ayun was thus the royal family’s temple and it is here that they would worship their ancestors at a special shrine known as “Gedong Paibon”. Following the pattern of most Balinese temples, Pura Taman Ayun has three connecting temple yards. The innermost sanctum knows as “Utama Mandala” or ‘highest circle’, a middle yard “Madia Mandala” or ‘circle in between’ and an outer yard “Nista Mandala” or ‘humblest circle’. As one enters the main sanctum, on epasses though a raised gateway called a koriaAgung (Paduraksa), and in between the outer and middle courtyards there is a split gate called, a”Candi Bentar”. IN the middle courtyard there are shrines dedicated to the main tem-
ples of Bali. These shrines were built order to ensure that the kingdom and the people of Mengwi would be able to share in the prosperity and fertility of the island and also served as a place for the people of Mengwi to carry out religious ceremonies such as meajar-ajar, memendak sang Pitara. People would also come here to request holy water to protect their rice fields form pestilence and other calamities. The inner courtyard also houses a shrine dedicated to one of the Kings famous troops knwn as “Pasek Badak’. The extensive temple grounds of Taman Ayun also served a place for the riyal family to relax. The temple grounds cover some 4 hectares and the moat that surrounds the area used to be filled with different colored lilies and loins. Around the edge of the moat stand flower bearing trees such as: frangipani, cempaka, kenanga, as well as mangostein, durian, manggo , rambutan and other fruit trees. The temple has always been impacted by the ups and downs of the Mengwi kingdom. In 1890 for example, when under Mengwi’s 10th raja I Gusti Made Agung, a war was lost to the raja of Badung, the temple was completely neglected

Organisers said a total of 110,604 spectators went to Sepang International Circuit near Kuala Lumpur’s international airport over the three days of practice, qualifying and Sunday’s race. That was the largest weekend turnout since 2013, the season before Formula One replaced the screaming 2.4 litre V8 engines with quieter 1.6 litre turbo-hybrid power units. It was also 31.9 percent more than last year. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said it was a sentimental moment. “We have hosted this for 19 years and I think we have seen some thrilling events,” he told reporters at a news conference with Formula One Chief Executive Chase Carey, adding that an eventual return could not be ruled out. Malaysia made its debut in 1999 and pioneered the sport’s regional push, with Japan until then the
only other country in Asia to have a race. China and Singapore, with a spectacular night race, have followed. “We’ve had a great history here,” said Carey, who replaced former supremo Bernie Ecclestone in January. “But change is part of life. “We’re actually very excited about the opportunities we have in Asia in general. “We have a number of places where we have great interest and new opportunities to continue to grow the sport.” Singapore has just signed a fresh four-year deal securing its place on the calendar until 2021, while China’s latest agreement runs to at least 2020. Sepang CEO Razlan Razali told Reuters on Friday that Malaysia would not want to host Formula One even if it were offered for free, with the sport not serving up enough excitement to draw in the local crowds. “The attraction for the Malaysian fans is the problem, especially since 2014. That is something that for us as a promoter is difficult to sell,” he said on Sunday. The championship battle between Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel has provided a gripping narrative, however, even if Sunday’s race stretched the former’s lead to a hefty 34 points. Malaysia also made the sport accessible to other countries in the region as one of the most affordable races to attend, and has been a favourite of international spectators.
One of the most physically gruelling events on the calendar, with its heat and strength-sapping humidity, has also been a real challenge for drivers.

‘JUST KEPT GOING ON’ Video taken of the attack showed panicked crowds fleeing as sustained rapid gunfire ripped through the area. “It sounded like fireworks. People were just dropping to the ground. It just kept going on,” said Steve Smith, a 45-year-old visitor from Phoenix, Arizona, who had flown in for the concert. He said the gunfire went on for an extended period of time. “Probably 100 shots at a time. It would sound like it was reloading and then it would go again,” Smith said. “People were shot and trying to get out. We’re horrified. We’re bewildered and our condolences go out to the victims,” Eric Paddock said in a brief telephone interview, his voice trembling. “We have no idea in the world.” U.S. President Donald Trump offered his condolences to the victims via a post on Twitter early Monday. “My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!” Trump said. The rampage was reminiscent of a mass shooting at a Paris rock concert in November 2015 that killed 89 people, part of a wave of coordinated attacks by Islamist militants that left 130 dead. BEIRUT - Two suicide bombers attacked a police station in Damascus on Monday, killing a number of civilians and policemen, the interior minister said, in the first such attack in the Syrian capital since July. Four militants carried out the attack, killing more than 10 people, the pro-Damascus TV channel al-Mayadeen said. Russia’s RIA news agency reported that 15 people were killed. Militants targeted the station in the al-Midan neighbourhood and clashed with police officers there, Interior Minister Mohammad al-Shaar said in comments broadcast by state television from the police station. One attacker blew himself up at the main entrance and another detonated his explosive device on the first floor, he said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Footage broadcast by state TV showed bodies wrapped in shrouds at the scene and fire fighters putting out flames. Spanish PM faces crisis after violent secession vote in Catalonia
SANT PERE DE TORELLO - Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy faces Spain’s biggest constitutional crisis in decades after Sunday’s violence-marred independence referendum in Catalonia opened the door for its wealthiest region to move for secession as early as this week.
The streets of Barcelona, the Catalan capital, were quiet on Monday, but newspaper editorials said the referendum, in which Catalan officials said 90 percent of voters had chosen to leave Spain, had set the stage for a decisive clash between Madrid and the region. “It could all get worse,” the moderate Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia said in an editorial after Spanish police used batons and rubber bullets to disrupt the vote, which had been declared illegal by Madrid. Catalan officials said 840 people had been injured. “We’re entering a phase of strikes and street protests ... and with more movement, more repression.” Catalonia is a centre of industry and tourism accounting for a fifth of Spain’s economy, a production base for major multi-nationals from Volkswagen to Nestle, and home to Europe’s fastest-growing sea port. Although it already has extensive autonomy, its tax revenues are crucial to Spain’s state budget. Catalonia’s regional leader, Carles Puigdemont, declared on Sunday that
voters had earned the right to independence and said he would present the results to the region’s parliament, which then had the power to move a motion of independence. The referendum has no legal status; it has been blocked by the Madrid government and Constitutional Court for being at odds with the 1978 constitution, which states that Spain cannot be broken up, and there is little sign of support for Catalan independence in any other part of Spain. Puigdemont called an emergency meeting of the Catalan regional government. In Madrid, Rajoy planned to coordinate next steps in a meeting with Pedro Sanchez, leader of the opposition Socialists. CHALLENGE TO MADRID Puigdemont’s comments threw down a challenge to Rajoy, who has the constitutional power to sack the regional government and put Catalonia under central control pending fresh elections. That would raise tensions further in the region of 7.5 million people, a former principality with its own
language and culture, and potentially hurt the resurgent Spanish economy. The euro lost a third of a U.S. cent after the vote, though it later recovered ground. By 0800 GMT, Spain’s IBEX stock index was down 0.6 percent, easing back from steeper losses at the opening; the main losers included the Catalan banks Sabadell and Caixabank. Yields on Spain’s 10-year benchmark rose initially but also fell back through the morning. Major investment banks expect the crisis eventually to be resolved with an offer from Rajoy of more autonomy. “We believe the risk of larger confrontations in the near-term is rising, involving at the extreme wide disruptions with potential severe economic costs,” Citibank said in a note on Monday, It did not, though, see this as the most likely outcome. Catalan trade unions have called a general strike for Tuesday. Enter “AyoPoligami” - a new smartphone app developed by Pranayama, which aims to “bring together male users with women who are willing to make ‘big families’.” Loosely translated as “Let’s do polygamy”, the Tinder-style dating app has already stirred up controversy since its April launch in Indonesia, where over 80 percent of the 250 million population are Muslim and polygamy is legal. Muslim men can take up to four wives in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, if permission is granted by a court and the first wife gives her consent. Court officials could not provide figures of how many people in Indonesia are polygamous, but activists say cases of men giving false information to gain permission and manipulation of women are common.
The app has been downloaded over 10,000 times before it stopped registering new members following concerns of fake accounts were being set up, and men using the site without the knowledge of their first wives. A new version is set to be launched on Oct. 5, and will impose stricter rules on users including requiring them to provide an identification card, marital status and a letter of permission from their first wives. ‘ T H I S I S W H AT G O D PLANNED FOR ME’ Iyus Yusuf Fasyiya, an Indonesian factory worker who has two wives, said he used the app to share tips with other users on how to maintain a polygamous marriage. “Many members are looking for wives - they ask about how to start, how to maintain polygamous marriages, and also government regulations,” he said from his home village in Bogor, about 90-minute
drive from the capital Jakarta. The 37-year-old dodged questions about whether he was using the app to look for another wife but said he continues to learn about polygamy, after he took on his second wife six years following his first marriage in 2000. “It just happened, this is what God planned for me,” said Fasyiya, who takes turns to see his two wives and five children who live in nearby villages. The majority of the app users were men, but there were also about 4,000 women who have registered, the app developer said. Lawyer Rachmat Dwi Putranto, who deals with marriage matters, said polygamy is “not that easily achieved” as Indonesian courts will only give permission if the first wife is disabled, ill or cannot bear children. Dollar surge sends emerging currencies reeling
LONDON - Emerging market currencies slipped on Monday, extending losses from last week as a strong dollar and rising U.S. Treasury yields outweighed upbeat factory data from China. Emerging markets are one of the top-performing asset classes of 2017, with double-digit gains in some sectors, but they have fallen back in recent weeks as the dollar has risen on expectations of a U.S. rate rise by the end of the year and the possible appointment of a more hawkish U.S. Federal Reserve chief. South Africa’s rand, Russia’s rouble and Turkey’s lira all fell around 0.5 percent against the dollar as the dollar index rose further after enjoying its best week of 2017 last week, and yields on 10-year U.S. Treasuries hit their highest since July. Emerging currencies hit five-week lows last week on JPMorgan’s ELMI Plus index, losing more than 1 percent. “You’re seeing some repricing on the U.S. side on a combination of the possibility of tax reform in the U.S. being approved and maybe a more hawkish Fed governor,” said Jakob Christensen, an emerging markets analyst at Danske Bank. “That is playing into a stronger dollar, and goes hand in hand with higher U.S. rates, which is typically tricky for emerging markets,” he said. Investors were cheered by data showing manufacturing activity in China grew at the fastest pace since 2012 in September since that data paints a rosy picture for demand for emerging market exports. But with markets in China, South Korea and India closed for public holidays, MSCI’s benchmark emerging equity index was little changed, and trading some 3 percent below three-year highs struck in September. There were gains, however, on emerging European equities, with Warsaw and Budapest rising 0.7 and 0.9 percent respectively , after robust purchasing manager (PMI) surveys. “On the equity side we have seen a significant rally and maybe the prices are beginning to be a bit stretched, but the strong PMIs suggest the global economy is doing quite well and supporting the trade-oriented emerging markets,” Danske Bank’s Christensen said. Demand remains strong for emerging market paper, with the spread of sovereign debt over U.S. Treasuries near its lowest since August 2014. Hammond is due to speak at the annual conference of his Conservative Party, seen as a chance for Prime Minister Theresa May’s government to try to repair relations with the party’s grassroots after a botched election in June. has warned that public rifts within May’s cabinet are undermining business confidence. Divisions over Europe helped sink the Conservative premierships of Margaret Thatcher, John Major and David Cameron. “Public disagreements between cabinet ministers in recent weeks have only served to undermine business confidence, not just on Brexit negotiations, but also on the many issues where firms need to see clear action from government closer to home,” British Chambers of Commerce Director General Adam Marshall said. Last month rating agency Moody’s downgraded Britain’s credit rating, saying the government’s plans to bring down its debt load had been knocked off course and Brexit would weigh on the economy. The Conservatives will pledge 400 million pounds ($535 million) of additional road and rail spending, but Labour said the plans did not go far enough. “Hammond just wants to continue with the seven years of Tory economic failure that has seen the level of investment in our country fall behind many of our international competitors,” Labour’s finance policy chief John McDonnell said.(rtr)

Hundreds of Daup villagers eat together at Bale Agung Temple
Hundreds of villagers from Daup Customary Villagers, Kintamani, thronged the outermost courtyard of the Bale Agung Temple on Wednesday afternoon (Jun. 28) at around 14:00 to eat together. This shared meal is part of the traditional ngaturang lakon procession that was carried out by ten former leaders of Daup customary village. Jero Penyarikan Payu accompanied by headman of Daup, Dewa Nyoman Saliawan, when met last Wednesday explained that ngaturang lakon is a tradition that must be executed by former customary leaders of Daup customary village in the position of Jero Kubayan, Jero Bau, Jero Singgukan, Jero Nyarikan and Jero Mangku (temple priest). On Wednesday there were a total of ten residents who took part in the ngaturang lako, seven of whom had served as Jero Kubayan, two as Jero Bau and one as Jero Mangku. “This ngaturang lakon signifies a kind of returning of the offerings that were accepted when they were serving as leaders” explained
Saliawan. According to the customs of the ngaturang lakon, residents who once served as kubayan (the highest position in the ulu apad system), are obliged to offer certain oblations including two pigs. Those who served as Jero Bau and temple priests (Jero Mangku) only offer a pig. “This year a total of 17 pigs are being offered”, he said. Jero Penyarikan Payu explained that the ngaturang laku begins with the negtegang procession, followed by nanceb taring and ngingsah. The procession was commenced three days ago and on Wednesday, the mapiuning (notifying) procession took place at the Puseh Temple in the morning when the pigs were brought to the temple. Later in the afternoon, after
performing the mapiuning, the participants went back to the Bale Agung to slaughter the pigs and prepared for various purposes. “Some of the pork is processed for offerings, some divided up for malang (divided equally amongst all the heads of family) and the remaining is made dishes like lawar, sate to be eaten together” Payu explained. Jero Penyarikan Payu went on to explained that the ngaturang lakon tradition is not actually a necessity, however, if it is not implemented the former leaders are considered to have a spiritual debt. “Usually people give up their position as customary leaders (pedulan) once all their children have gotten married” he added. There are always unique and interesting things in Bali. Gumang Temple at Bugbug, Karangasem, for instance, will hold a ritual to be thronged by thousands of Hindu pilgrims from all over Bali. Among the thousands of the pilgrims, the majority will climb to the hill top to the Gumang Temple with offerings including roasted suckling pig. Apparently, every birth of resident, especially at Bugbug customary village, it must include a roasted suckling pig. This offering should not be performed as soon as the baby was born, but can also be done after it grows adult. To get to the Gumang Temple is indeed not easy. Pilgrims have to walk about three kilometers with uphill terrain. Moreover, the pilgrims do not only bring themselves, but must also bring the offerings and roasted suckling pig. This unique spectacle can be seen on Thursday (Oct. 13) after the sanctified effigy of Ida Bhatara of Bebandem, Ngis, Jasri and Bugbug customary village is enthroned at Gumang Temple. According to chief of Bugbug customary village, Jero Wayan Mas Suyasa, the offering of roasted suckling pig implies a sincere offering of local residents to the deity. “The offering of roasted suckling pig serves as an expression of devotion. Other than presenting this offering of every birth, many pilgrims also present roasted suckling pig to pay a vow after getting success in economy or recovery of diseases,” he said. Such offerings of roasted suckling pig can reach thousands of pieces. These offerings are not only from residents of Bugbug, but also from other villages in Bali. It is also done by diaspora of Bugbug mostly living in Buleleng. Besides,
there are also from residents of Bugbug married outside the village. Psychically, they still remember to devoted deities at their home birthplace. “The offering of roasted suckling pig on every birth must not necessarily be paid as soon as after the newborn. In order not to become a burden, this offering can be paid any time when the people are ready. Moreover, it can be done after the child grows adult,” said Mas Suyasa, recently. This tradition has lasted for generations. Every implementation of the usaba gumang is believed by all residents of Bugbug as the opportunity to gain blessing of salvation and wellbeing for the descendants. Bugbug residents have confidence in the safety of their children after presenting this offering. If they have son, their roasted suckling pig are hogs, while if they have daughter their offerings will be of sows. This tradition does not only involve the residents of Bugbug. However, it is also believed by residents of Bugbug getting married outside the village where they should practice the tradition until now. In the procession of usaba gumang taking place from around 13:00, thousands of residents that will be presenting the offerings have thronged the road access to Gumang Temple while carrying roasted suckling pig, rice cone and other offerings. This usaba gumang is always welcomed vivaciously by the residents of Bugbug as the most densely populated village in Karangasem with about 3,000 families and other villages. It is inseparable from the quite high awareness of paying devotional services and holy sacrifices of the local community because it has been instilled early by their elders. (kmb)

School overwhelmed by refugee students
SINGARAJA - Schools in Tejakula sub-district are becoming overwhelmed to accommodate students of Gunung Agung refugees. This condition can not be avoided, because the number of students with the availability of space and school bench is not comparable. As a result, the school was forced to do double shift (morning and afternoon school). In addition, teachers also begin to overwhelm in teaching, as the number of students increases. Monitoring in the field, Monday (Oct.2), mentioned there are 1,552 elementary school students are accommodated in Tembok village. These children are accom-
modated in all primary schools in Tembok Village and surrounding areas. Schools receiving these children are overwhelmed by inadequate school capacity with the addition of refugee students. One of the schools that was overwhelmed by the displaced students was SDN 2 Tembok, Tejakula Sub-district. A week ago this school received additional refugee students as many as 170 people. The additional hundreds of displaced students made the classroom in this school unable to accommodate them. The head of SDN 2 Tembok Made Suarna said that since the refugee camp was
accommodated in his school, he enacted a double shift learning process. For the morning shift, his side prioritizes learning for students from the Tembok Village as many as 165 people. As for the afternoon shift turn refugees who follow the learning. With the afternoon shift in terms of the bench is sufficient, but the teacher is limited in number. ‘’ Because of the arrival of the refugee students we are overwhelmed and now we are testing with double shifts. Two women deny murdering North Korean leader’s half-brother
DHAKA - Bangladesh and Myanmar agreed on Monday to set up a “working group” to plan the repatriation of more than half a million Rohingya Muslim refugees who have fled to Bangladesh to escape an army crackdown, the Bangladeshi foreign minister said. The United Nations has called the exodus of 507,000 Rohingya since late August the world’s fastest-developing refugee emergency, and says Buddhist-majority Myanmar is engaging in ethnic cleansing against its Rohingya Muslim minority. Myanmar denies that. It says its forces are battling Rohingya “terrorists” who triggered the latest wave of violence with coordinated attacks on the security forces on Aug. 25. Myanmar says more than 500 people have been killed since, most of them insurgents, whom it has accused of attacking civilians and setting most of the fires that have reduced to ashes more than half of more than 400 Rohingya villages in the north of Rakhine State. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali said he and Myanmar official Kyaw Tint Swe had agreed in their talks to set up the working group to draw up
plans for repatriation. “We are looking forward to a peaceful solution to the crisis,” Ali told reporters. Kyaw Tint Swe did not speak to the media and government spokesmen in Myanmar were not immediately available for comment. Waves of Rohingya have taken refuge in Bangladesh over the years complaining of persecution, in particular in the late 1970s, the early 1990s and in October last year, following smaller insurgent attacks on the security forces. The neighbours have agreed on repatriation plans before, but the fundamental problem - the status of Rohingya in Myanmar - remains unsettled. The Rohingya are denied citizenship and classified as illegal immigrants, despite claiming roots in Myanmar that go back centuries, with communities marginalised and subjected to bouts of communal violence over the years. Problems of statelessness had to be tackled, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told a meeting in Geneva. “Nowhere is the link between statelessness and displacement more evident than with the Rohingya community,” he said. (rtr)
KUALA LUMPUR - Two women accused of murdering the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with a banned nerve agent pleaded not guilty at the start of a high-profile murder trial in a Malaysian court on Monday. Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, a Vietnamese, are charged with killing Kim Jong Nam by smearing his face with VX, a chemical poison banned by the United Nations, at Kuala Lumpur airport on Feb. 13. Both women wore bullet-proof vests as they were led into the court on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital. They face the death penalty if convicted. Police have also named four North Koreans as suspects in the case and an Interpol red notice, an international alert just short of an arrest warrant, has been issued for the North Koreans, who remain at large. Defence lawyers demanded that the prosecution immediately name the four other suspects, who have also been charged, so they can prepare their case. “The charge must be clear,” said Siti Aisyah’s lawyer, Gooi Soon Seng. Judge Azmi Ariffin dismissed their request. The two women nodded their
heads when the charges were read out by two interpreters. They pleaded not guilty. “ATTACKED FROM BEHIND” The prosecution said the women’s actions showed “intent to kill the victim” by smearing his face and eyes with VX nerve agent, which a Malaysian post-mortem confirmed had killed Kim. The women told their lawyers they did not know they were participating in a deadly attack and believed they were carrying out a prank for a reality TV show. “The prank practice carried out by the first and second accused with the supervision of the four who are still at large was preparation to see through their common intention to kill the victim,” lead prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad said in his opening statement. The two women sat quietly in the packed courtroom. Siti was dressed in a black floral suit, while Huong wore a white long-sleeved t-shirt and jeans. Juliana Idris, who works at the
airport, told the court a man later identified as Kim Jong Nam approached her and asked her to take him to a police station. She said the man, who spoke English, told her he had been “attacked by a woman from behind ... another one closed his eyes”. “His hands were shaking a bit, I don’t know why,” she said. Police Lance Corporal Mohd Zulkarnain Sanudin, who was on duty at the airport, said Juliana had brought Kim Jong Nam to him. He said Kim told him a substance had been wiped on his face. Kim’s eyes were red and he could see some liquid on his face, Zulkarnain said. He also said the he had wrongly recorded Kim Jong Nam’s nationality as South Korean. “The police report I made showed the nationality as South Korean, while on the passport, it was written DPR Korea, whereby I did not know what DPR meant. Armed with smartphones and boots, Niger youths map flood risks
NIAMEY - Fatima Alher watches her step, careful not to sink knee-deep in the water flooding the rice fields of Kirkisoy, a neighbourhood in Niger’s capital. Her colleagues help lift her over the biggest puddles – a task complicated by the fact that they barely take their eyes off their smartphones. “Never without a phone, that’s our motto,” Alher says, frantically typing on her screen. In one of the world’s poorest countries, widespread flooding has killed at least 56 people and destroyed thousands of homes since the rainy season began in June, according to the interior ministry. Efforts to rebuild flood-hit areas are not progressing fast enough, residents coplain. But since July, a team of 20 “investigators” from OpenStreetMap Niger – a community of students and young professionals who are developing a digital map of the country – have been plotting flood-prone areas on their smartphones in two of Niamey’s districts. “Flooding devastates the country every year, and yet no effort has been made to chart the most vulnerable areas,” Alher, a geography student and leader of the group, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Using GeoODK, an app that allows users to collect georeferenced information, the researchers gather details such as the number of residents and buildings, any construction materials used and the location of electric poles. “By the end of August we had drawn up a list of over 15,000 properties and buildings,” Alher proudly explained. “We then send the data to the interior ministry, so it can better target its relief efforts in times of flooding.” The three-month initiative is managed by the government Disaster Risk Management and Urban Development Project, and funded by the World Bank. Chronobiology, or the study of biological clocks, is now a growing field of research thanks to the pioneering work of the three scientists, who explained the role of specific genes in keeping animal bodies in step with light and darkness. Today scientists are exploring novel approaches to new treatments based on such circadian cycles, including establishing the best times to take medicines, and there is an increased focus on the importance of healthy sleeping patterns. “This ability to prepare for the regular daily fluctuations is crucial for all life forms,” Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Karolinska Institute Nobel Committee, told reporters. “This year’s Nobel prize laureates have been studying this
fundamental problem and solved the mystery of how an inner clock in our bodies can anticipate daily fluctuations between night and day to optimise our behaviour and physiology.” Rosbash said the news that the trio had won the Nobel prize, which is worth 9 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million), was “a little overwhelming”. “It took my breath away, literally. I was woken up out of deep sleep and it was shocking,” he told Reuters. “It’s great for basic science. It hasn’t had a tremendous amount of practical impact yet, so it’s really a very basic discovery ... It’s good to have the attention on this kind of basic work.” Scientists were already pondering the concept of body clock genes in the 1960s and 1970s. Then in the mid-1980s the three laureates used fruit flies to isolate a gene that controls the normal daily biological rhythm and showed how it encodes a protein that accumulates in the cell during the night and degrades during the day.
Further research revealed the role of other genes in the complex system. Now doctors are paying increased attention to the implications of this daily cycle in people who have erratic sleeping and working patterns or in children who stay up late. “We are learning more and more what impact it has to not follow your clock,” Nobel committee member Christer Hoog told Reuters. “If you constantly disobey your clock, what will happen? Medical research is going on with regards to that.” Medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes awarded each year. The prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were created in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel and have been awarded since 1901. Nobel medicine laureates have included scientific greats such as Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, and Karl Landsteiner, whose identification of separate blood types opened the way to carrying out safe transfusions. PVMBG urges residents to no longer climb Mt. Agung
AMLAPURA — Chief of Volcanology Center for Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Kasbani, responded to the presence of people that are still desperate to climb to the top of Mount Agung while in warning status. He asked that no more residents will climb to the top of the highest mountain in Bali for safety reasons. When interviewed in the Mount Agung Monitoring Post at Rendang village, Karangasem, on Sunday (Oct. 1), he revealed that based on information obtained there are some people that climbed to the top of Mount Agung to ensure the real conditions over there. Seeing that, he requested that no more people that will climb to Mount Agung. What they did is very dangerous and has something to do with safety. Moreover, condition of the mountain so far remains in critical condition and warning status. “What they did is very dan-
gerous. It’s about salvation, especially with the current condition of Mount Agung that can erupt all the time. So, we call for that no more people will climb to the top of Mount Agung,” appealed Kasbani. According to Kasbani, with the current conditions where smoke starting to go out from the bottom of the crater since recent days has indicated the existence of vapor blast and the smoke
containing toxic gases that come out from within the crater is very dangerous for life when inhaled and enter the body. More hazardously, the climbing is done at night under cloudy conditions and the rain of gases produced will surely settle in the bottom. “Although it
has not erupted, it remains dangerous because the smoke released through fractures is very dangerous. In addition to bringing out water vapor in the crater, it also blows gases to the surface. This must be understood and observed,” said Kasbani. He asserted that seismicity remains quite high. Although the earthquake reduces, the deep and shallow volcanic earthquake and tectonic earthquake are still quite a lot. On Sat-
urday (Sep. 30), the earthquake reached 813 times consisting of 542 deep volcanic earthquakes, 252 shallow volcanic earthquakes and 19 local tectonic earthquakes. In the meantime, at the last six hours at 00:06 Local Time, he recorded 180 deep volcanic earthquakes, 100 local volcanic earthquakes and 7 local tectonic earthquakes. “So, the earthquake occurrence is still high, there is no indication leading to a decline in status. BANGLI — Two refugees of Mount Agung died at Bangli Hospital. Both refugees are Wayan Sadra, 57, from Keladian hamlet, Pempatan, Rendang and Gusti Ayu Made Dudun, 78, from Palak hamlet, Besakih, who died due to suffering from chronic lung disease. Deputy Director of Bangli Hospital, Ketut Darmaja, when met on Sunday (Sep. 1) explained that Wayan Sadra registered to evacuate at the refugee camp of Pande hamlet, Cempaga Bangli, went to emergency room of Bangli House on Thursday (Sep. 28) around 19:25. He came into the emergency room with respiratory problems.
After receiving medical treatment in the emergency room, the patient was then treated in the ICU. On the second day, Saturday (Sep. 30), Sadra’s consciousness decreased to finally die. “Around 4:30, the patient died,” he explained. After being entrusted in the mortuary of Bangli Hospital, Sadra’s body was then repatriated by using hears of Bangli Hospital to his home village at Keladian hamlet, Pempatan, Karangasem, on Sunday (Oct. 10) around 10:10. In the meantime, the patient Gusti Ayu Made Dudun, 78, from Palak hamlet, Besakih, went to the emergency room of Bangli Hos-
pital on Thursday afternoon (Sep. 28). Darmaja said that like Wayan Sadra, Gusti Ayu Made Dudun registered to evacuate at Nongan Karangasem and came into emergency room because of acute shortness of breath. She got handling in the emergency room. A few hours later the patient died. The body of Gusti Ayu Made Dudun was sent home by ambulance on Friday (Sep. 29). Darmajaya added that treatment expenses of both patients are already guaranteed by the government considering they are both coming from 27 villages whose residents must be evacuated. (kmb40)

The smoke that is currently being emitted from the crater indicates that there are vapour blasts and this smoke contains toxic gases that are highly dangerous if inhaled. The recent climb was especially hazardous because it was cloudy so the gases would surely have settled in the bottom of the crater. “Although it has not erupted, it remains dangerous because the smoke released through fractures is very dangerous. In addition to emitting water vapour in the crater, it also blows gases to the surface. This should be understood and taken into consideration”, said Kasbani. Seismicity also remains high. Economy disrupted if tourists cancel their trips to Bali
MANGUPURA —After a week of the the alert status for the possible eruption or Mount Agung having been raised to ‘ warning’ or level IV, Bali should be able to provide accurate information for tourists wanting to visit the island. If information related to the condition of Mount Agung is overly sensationalist, many tourists are likely to cancel their tripo to the island of the Gods. This of course would also disrupt Bali’s economy said Director of Operations of the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), A.A. Ngurah Wirawan, on Sunday (Oct. 1) when met amid the activities of Bali Run 2017 in Nusa Dua. Ngurah Wirawan said that currently there needs to be clear information for tourists letting them know that tourism the Island of Bali remains safe. “Tourism activities like the Bali Run show the world that many tourism activities including sports tourism are running normally” he said. The Bali Run, explained Wirawan has participants from all over Indonesia and other parts of the world and takes place both in Nusa Dua and also on the Bali Mandara Toll Road. “Last year, we only ran within the area of Nusa Dua, but this year with permission from the Minister of Public Works we are allowed to use the Bali Mandara Toll Road as part of the running route”, he said. Running is not just a ‘sports tourism’ activity but is also popular with people from many age groups living in urban areas around the world. The presence of foreign tourists in the Bali Run proves that tourists consider Bali to still be a safe place to be. “ This activity is one of the tourist attractions in the area of ITDC”, he added. Wirawan admitted that although the increasing seismic activity of Mount Agung has been spread through social and mass media, the run event organizers managed to convince both domestic and foreign runners that Mount Agung is far enough from the area where the run is taking place that conditions remain safe. Visitors were encouraged to return to Bali to participate in the Bali Run”, he said. When asked about tourists having cancelled their reservations, Wirawan said that he had not received any reports from hotels in the ITDC area about cancelations related to Mount Agung. Currently, hotel occupancy rates in the ITDC area remains quite good. IN the first semester of semester of 2017 the average occupancy was above 78 percent. However, he has not confirmed the hotel occupancy in the ITDC area since the the rumblings of Mount Agung started. (kmb23)

Abandoned by tourists, Bali town counts cost of Indonesia volcano
AMED - A Balinese town once bustling with holidaymakers has almost emptied of tourists after warnings that nearby Mount Agung could erupt at any time - a snapshot of the growing cost the rumbling volcano poses to Indonesia’s economy. Business has slumped at many hotels, dive resorts and restaurants in towns around the volcano since authorities issue the highest alert level for Mount Agung last month. An owner of a dive centre in Amed, around 15 km (9 miles) from the volcano and just outside the official “danger zone”, said many of her guests had cancelled. “If (the situation) lasts for nine months or more...then we have no choice but to close down because we will have no money left to operate and pay the staff,” said Helene Rabate, a Spaniard who runs the centre. Cafes and restaurants were largely empty and few visitors were seen at the usually crowded dive centres of this seaside town. The last time Agung erupted was in 1963, when more than 1,000 people were killed. Since then, tourism has transformed towns like Amed from sleepy fishing and agricultural villages. Restaurant owner Wayan Widarti has seen a dramatic drop in customers. “It could be worse than when
the Bali bombing happened because there’s uncertainty on when (the eruption) is going to happen and how long we wait,” she said, referring to the 2002 nightclub bombing that killed 202 people and prompted a slump in visitors to the holiday island. Bali, famous for its surf, beaches and temples, attracted nearly 5 million visitors last year - more than half the total number of foreign tourists to Indonesia. Tourism, a cornerstone of Bali’s economy, is Indonesia’s fourth-biggest earner of foreign currency after natural resources like coal and palm oil. Indonesian policy makers have been seeking to boost an economy whose growth rate has been stuck at around 5 percent for the last few years, so any protracted damage to tourism will be particularly unwelcome. Disaster management authorities have imposed an exclusion zone of up to 12 km, prompting more than 140,000 residents to flee to neighbouring villages. “For people who live in safe zones, there is no reason to evacuate,” Bali governor I Made Mangku Pastika said, adding that makeshift evacuation centres were straining under the weight of thousands of extra evacuees.
